We take responsibility for food shortage in SHSs – Education Ministry PRO

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Education says his outfit takes full responsibility for the widespread reports of malnourishment of students and food shortage in some senior high schools in the country.

Admitting the challenges in an interview on the Super Morning Show on Monday, Kwasi Kwarteng said the Ministry is aware of the feeding crisis which has plagued some high schools.

According to him, the challenge is real; adding that he is aware of how some heads of second-cycled institutions struggle to provide decent meals to boarding students.

He, however, assured that the Ministry is working around the clock to address the challenge which has become a huge disincentive to effective teaching and learning.

“I appreciate the concerns that have been raised. I am not here to reject or deny them.

“My first comment is that no matter the situation, that is why we are there as leadership. And the beauty of leadership is to take responsibility no mater how the issues are and then make some inputs with regards to whatever concerns have been raised”, Kwasi Kwarteng said.

He continued, “The Dr Adwutwum-led administration ultimately takes responsibility for everything.

“The assurance we’re going to give parents is that, even though officially we’ve not had these complaints when it comes to the food shortages, where there are indeed, some level of challenges with regards to supplies, be it transportation issues, be it logistical issues, quickly when we get the name of the school, we’ll go in intervene and resolve it”.

Having assured guardians about government’s willingness to resolve the crisis, he however lamented the creation of false stories on food shortages in senior high schools.

He said while the challenges exist, they must not be falsely presented to court disaffection for the government.

Food shortage in senior high schools has been on the front burner following widespread reports about how some students find it difficult to come by three square meals a day.

As a result, some of these underfed students are compelled to call their guardians to bring them food from home, due to the scanty and poor quality food they receive in school.

This challenge has become predominant in recent times, forcing some parents to plead with government to allow them start feeding their wards in school.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has dispelled rumours about the victimisation of heads of senior high schools who bring these issues to the fore.

Touching on the issue, Mr. Kwarteng said government is receptive to feedback on the feeding crisis and would not attack anybody who genuinely highlights the setbacks.

  • If January is mistreating your finances, here are 4 money suggestions to help

If January is mistreating your finances, here are 4 money suggestions to help

Because most individuals spend lavishly in December, many people think that January is practically longer than other months of the year.

Here are four suggestions you might apply in this post to finish the rest of the month strong.

Read the complete article that was first released by kuulpeeps on January 24, 2020.

Everyone has heard the jokes about January being the longest month of the year and the place when money and financial plans die.

If you’re reading this then it’s more than likely that you experienced first-hand the savagery of trying to get through January with the same paycheck that you used for Detty December. If you’ve had a bad month, you can still turn things around next month if you use these 4 hacks.

    1. Review your past budget

One of the best things you can do for yourself to turn your money situation around is to review the budget that you had for the past month and see where things went wrong. Taking a closer look at your spending will show you all the bad money habits that you need to start doing away with in order to turn things around for your account.

    2. Unlink your Mobile Money from your bank account

These days it’s so convenient to access your money with just a few taps. You can instantly go into the deepest depths of your bank account on your phone and pull as much money out as you want to fuel your bad decisions. If you are serious about saving or managing your money then unlink your momo as soon as possible. If you can’t transfer your money to a different account or whatever else you have to. Convenience is the death of savings and good money management.

    3. Switch to a group Netflix/Spotify/Apple Music plan

If you’re going solo on any of your streaming subscriptions then you probably deserve the broke-ness that’s following you. Most of the streaming services that you use have family plans that you can get with your friends and split the bill for. It’s an easy way to cut back on some of the money that you’re leaking.

    4. Start thinking of thoughtful Valentine’s gifts

Everyone knows that valentine’s day is one of the more expensive periods at the beginning of the year. If you’re all coupled up, there’s still a chance for you to save your bank account from taking a bloody combination to the face. Just start thinking of the most thoughtful gifts you can get your person. That way you can deliver on the thought that counts and leave your coins in your account.

  • BoG reporting manufactured inter-bank exchange rates – Alex Mould

BoG reporting manufactured inter-bank exchange rates – Alex Mould

A former Executive Director of the Standard Chartered Bank, Alexander Kofi-Mensah Mould has suggested the Bank of Ghana (BoG) is reporting manufactured inter-bank exchange rates – the rate at which Banks transact large ticket forex deals with each other – thereby encouraging a two tiered forex pricing mechanism in the country, in order to manipulate data.

According to Mr Mould, the rate at which BoG auctions the dollar to the commercial banks, of which the Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) are the largest beneficiaries, is far higher than what BoG publishes as interbank rates.

Citing an example, he said on 12th January 2023, while banks reported a GHS 12.5 purchase price per US$, BoG auctioned the dollar at GHS10.51 per dollar; yet on the same day they published the inter-bank rate at GHS9.05!

In a media interview, Mr. Mould said “the big issue is that BoG seems to be doing the hatchet job for government by misrepresenting the real interbank rate”.

He further intimated that BoG had deliberately kept the dollar rate low (at GHS8.5) towards the end of last year, while all the commercial banks were showing that the US$ exchange rate was in the GHS11-12 range.

“Ergo, if BoG had used the 11-12 Cedis per dollar rate which was what the real interbank rate was, we would have seen our debt number go up.

“The portion of Ghana’s debt denominated in foreign currency is about $30 billion; using the market exchange rate of 11-12 Cedis per dollar would’ve taken our total debt far above the 500 billion Cedi mark” he remarked.

This he said, needs to be investigated because “it implies that the Bank of Ghana may be deliberately keeping the inter-bank rate low so that government’s debt per GDP number would look good…..this is misleading!”.

Government’s arrogant posture to SHS food shortage worrying – Parents

Some parents and guardians have criticised government for its supposed arrogance and indifference toward the lamentation of food shortages in senior high schools.

Calling into Joy FM’s Super Morning Show during an interview with the Education Ministry’s Spokesperson, listeners were furious about the ‘praise singing’.

The Spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, had earlier said there were abundant food supplies at schools including PRESEC-Legon, St Thomas Aquinas SHS and Konongo SHS.

However, parents who called into the Morning Show were of a different view.

While some lamented about the impact of the food shortage on their wards others fumed about the arrogance Mr Kwarteng portrayed on the show.

“What is he saying? He should just humble himself and listen to the concerns. He cannot just come and sit on radio and sing his praises. We all know that our kids are suffering in school, they [our wards] tell us that they are not being fed well.

“Has the PRO been roaming in all the SHS schools in Ghana? Headmasters are being victimized and when you are being informed, the arrogance you are exhibiting. You don’t even want people to talk,” one Fred fumed.

Another caller known as Adu-Gyamfi added, “The PRO threw a challenge to you in the studio that follow him with your cameras to any SHS and I can bet my last pesewa including my haircut that there is no food supply in Schools.”

Meanwhile, Mr Kwarteng acknowledged the challenges the Education Minister has taken full responsibility for the current food crisis.

He further noted that Ministry is working earnestly to resolve the challenges across the country.

  • Government used COVID-19 as façade to plunder – Kwame Asiedu Sarpong

Government used COVID-19 as façade to plunder – Kwame Asiedu Sarpong

A Research Fellow at the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Dr Kwame Asiedu Sarpong, is accusing government of siphoning funds in the guise of Covid-19.

According to the pharmacist, the huge sums of money government received in donations should have been enough to forestall the debt problem the country is currently facing.

A total amount of GH¢21.8 billion was mobilised to mitigate the impact of the pandemic in Ghana.

However, government is currently at the doors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a $3 billion bailout.

While government conducts a controversial Domestic Debt Exchange programme, the Auditor-General has released its report on Covid-19 expenditure between May 2020 and June 2022.

The CDD fellow insists that infractions detailed in the said report make it difficult to accept the government’s use of the pandemic’s response measures as justification for the financial crisis.

“In actual fact, Covid gave us a bounty based on what the Auditor-General has said. We are at the IMF and our economy is in shambles because we used Covid as a facade to do bad things. Very bad things. Extremely bad and diabolical things. We used Covid to plunder the state,” he said on Monday.

Dr Sarpong made these comments on Joy FM‘s Super Morning Show on Monday.

He called for a “spirited campaign to get the monies retrieved.”

The pharmacist was however not too confident that this will be possible on precedence.

“How much of Woyome’s money have we been able to retrieve anyway?” he quizzed.

The Auditor-General’s report also disclosed that the government spent GH¢10 billion of the GH¢21.8 billion mobilised for Covid-19 activities on budget support.

According to the A-G, a total of GH¢21,844,189,185.24 was mobilised for the fight against the pandemic.

However, out of this amount, only GH¢11,750,683,059.11 was spent on curbing the spread of the virus.

My beef with Stonebwoy was staged – Ayisha Modi

Ghanaian socialite, Ayisha Modi, has alleged that her beef with Stonebwoy was staged.

It can be recalled that somewhere in 2022, Ayisha Modi and Stonebwoy made the headlines after the musician firmly stated in an interview that the female celebrity is not part of his team.

Following Stonebwoy’s utterances, Ayisha Modi stormed the internet to make some revelations on how she pumped money into Stonebwoy’s career when he was still underground.

He exposed how she was the one who used her hard-earned money to build Stonebwoy’s brand but he’s now lying to the whole world that he doesn’t know him from Adam.

The two traded subtle jabs at each other for some time until peace finally prevailed after Stonebwoy‘s Ashaiman To The World Concert.

Speaking in an interview with Kofi TV, Ayisa Modi alleged that her beef with the BHIM Nation boss was staged.

According to her, it was just a plot to hype his Ashaiman To The World Concert.

Ayisha Modi explained that there’s no bad blood between her and Stonebwoy because she still sees him as her younger brother.

  • Let’s use the AfCFTA to bring Africa together and prosper – African Chamber of Content Producers

Let’s use the AfCFTA to bring Africa together and prosper – African Chamber of Content Producers

Africans in Africa and the Diaspora have been urged by the African Chamber of Content Producers to support the goals of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in order to advance the development of the continent and provide genuine wealth to its people.

The chamber stressed the necessity of shifting the focus of Africa’s development away from loans and aid and toward intra-African trade in a news release to introduce the Africa Image Ambassadors project.

The Chamber of Commerce emphasized the necessity of creating strategic material on the AfCFTA in order to spark interest in and participation from Africans on the Continent and in the Diaspora and advance the goals and vision of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

The AfCFTA is the world’s largest free trade area bringing together the 55 countries of the African Union (AU) and eight (8) Regional Economic Communities (RECs). The overall mandate of the AfCFTA is to create a single continental market with a population of about 1.3 billion people and a combined GDP of approximately US$ 3.4 trillion.

AfCFTA is one of the flagship projects of Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want. It is a high-ambition trade agreement, with a comprehensive scope that includes critical areas of Africa’s economy, such as digital trade and investment protection, amongst other areas.

By eliminating barriers to trade in Africa, the objective of the AfCFTA is to significantly boost intra-Africa trade, particularly trade in value-added production and trade across all sectors of Africa’s economy.

In an Interview with Amb. Dwomoh-Doyen Benjamin; an Executive Director of the African Chamber of Content Producers, disclosed that trade is one of the earliest research themes within anthropology and by extension archaeology, therefore for Africa to develop, its people must go back to their roots.

“From all historical records, African civilizations and empires like Egypt, the Kingdom of Kush, the Land of Punt, Carthage, the Kingdom of Aksum, The Songhai Empire, Great Zimbabwe, The Mali Empire, the Ghana Empire, the Benin Kingdom, The Kongo, and several other powerful civilizations in pre-colonial Africa saw their rise to prominence through trade.

Trade brought several tribal Africans together and established strong ties leading to the birth of empires and great civilizations. AfCFTA must be seen as the largest trade empire for all Africans, this is why the Chamber has selected the AfCFTA as part of the flagship programs for the Africa Image Project”, he stated.

“The Africa Image (Aim) Project is a Pan-African leadership and development program put together by the African Chamber of Content Producers and its partners to achieve the agenda of rebranding Africa.

The AIM project is focused on National Development Programs (NDPs) across Africa. Ambassadors are to identify issues that affect the development of their respective countries and work with the chamber to establish tangible and sustainable solutions to rectify these challenges through content.

The launch of the Africa Image (AIm) Project has become necessary as we forge to build a platform for Africans to unite, connect, network, brainstorm, and work together to turn the fortunes of Africa around for the benefit of Africans” Part of the statement read.

Dr Prince Kwame Darko, an Image ambassador of the African Chamber of Content Producers also expressed his excitement for the opportunities that could be harnessed from the proper execution of AfCFTA. “AfCFTA is not just for manufacturers or investors in Africa, AfCFTA is also for African consumers like myself.

We are part of the value chain that the African Chamber of Content Producers is targeting for the success of the initiative. Trade is one of the most critical cultural activities that encouraged interaction and exchange of ideas, commodities, and services between individuals and communities and diversely transformed African societies in history.

Through the promotion of historical trade successes, and the development of strategic contents, the chamber can rally massive support for the AfCFTA”, he revealed.

The African Chamber of Content Producers’ modus operandi is in accordance with the principles & objectives of the African Charter on cultural renaissance Part 1 Article 3 (f) & (h) and Part V Article 20 & 21 on the use of media in promoting Culture and guided by the constitutive act of the Africa Union.

The Chamber has about a thousand Africa Image Ambassadors across Africa and the Diaspora.

Today in History: Pianim claims that a stable cedi is not a sign of a strong economy

According to famous economist Kwame Pianim, the stability of the local currency does not necessarily indicate that the economy is robust.

He said this after the government formed an FX committee to look into the performance of the cedi.

He said, “The committee is made up of some very competent people, but they are too busy,” adding, “The Minister of Trade should be busy getting down with business to set the trade protocols. The Minister of Agriculture should be busy modernizing agriculture.

“I cannot see them contributing to anything”, he foretold, insisting: “Let’s dissolve it,” he added.

An economist Mr Kwame Pianim has wondered why Ghanaians think a stable currency was indicative of a healthy economy.

In his opinion, a stable currency is not necessarily good for an economy, a comment that dismisses claims that the cedi’s poor performance against the dollar shows a weak economy.

Touching on the Forex Committee formed by the Ministry of Finance to investigate circumstances leading to the fall of the cedi against the major trading currencies, in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM on the station’s Eyewitness News programme on Monday, 20 January 2019, he said the formation was needles and should be dissolved.

“The committee is made up of some very competent people”, he observed, “but they are too busy”, he noted, explaining: “The Minister of Agriculture should be busy transforming agriculture, the Minister of Trade should be busy sitting down with industry to decide the trade protocols.”

“I cannot see them contributing to anything”, he foretold, insisting: “Let’s dissolve it”.

“A forty-member committee, are we serious?” the stalwart of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) wondered.

“In the fourth year of this administration? We don’t need ideas, we’ve had ideas – aviation hub, we’ve had it; financial services during Kufuor’s time, we discussed it, Barclays was involved”, Mr Pianim recalled, stressing that what the government needs to do in the last year of its four-year term is “action, action, action”.

“If I see this committee, it seems like a public relations stunt; we are not interested in a public relations stunt. These people [committee members] are too busy. This 40-member committee, look at them, they are busy people. They are managing banks, managing ministries; what time do they have? This committee, if it’s a public relations stunt, that’s fine; if it’s eye service, that’s fine; but I cannot see them contributing to anything.

“Dissolve it. We don’t need it. What is it for? They are going to meet; we spend the little money we don’t have making tea for them. What are they going to do?” He asked.

He further stated: “We, in Ghana, are beginning to talk as if a stable cedi is a litmus [test] for sound economic management. We should get away from that nonsense. … A stable currency is not necessarily good. You need it to be flexible and that’s why we had a fixed exchange rate, it took President Rawlings a long time to move us from a market-determined economy to a reasonably market-oriented economy to change … We have the floating exchange, fixed exchange, and then now we have a managed float, so, I do not understand why anybody thinks you have a cure for exchange rate development – the movement in the exchange rate”.

Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy, Jupitar could have done a better remix of Bob Marley’s Stir It Up – Ayisha Modi

Ghanaian talent manager, Ayisha Modi, who has worked with famous artistes in the country, has disclosed that a reggae and dancehall musician should have been contracted to work on the remix of Bob Marley’s classic love song ‘Stir It Up’.

According to Ayisha, rapper Sarkodie failed to do a better job on the remix of “Stir It Up,” which was released globally on Friday, January 20, 2022.

She named the dancehall musicians Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy, and Jupitar as the best candidates for the job.

She was of the strong belief that they could have delivered an exceptional verse on the song Bob Marley originally wrote for his wife, Rita Marley.

“They have to redo that remix, Bob Marley’s ‘Stir It Up’ because it is not the best.

“The name Bob Marley and the song made for him doesn’t sit well with me. There are certain things which are not your field, don’t force it. This belongs to Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy or Jupitar, it is their field. To me, that remix should be remade,” Ayisha disclosed in an interview on Kofi TV.

She added that “there was high expectation for the song, but when you carefully listen to it, you can’t really market it. Maybe it is my perception.”

The official music video for ‘Stir It Up’ was shoot in Ghana.

It captures beautiful scenes and beaches of the West African state.

As of January 23, the video had garnered some 400,000 views on Bob’s official YouTube channel.

Okomfo Kolege slams LilWin, others over ‘highest funeral donation’ scuffle

Kumawood actor, Okomfo Kolege, has responded to the ongoing banter among his colleagues, concerning who gave the largest donation at his wife’s funeral.

Earlier, LilWin, lambasted some actors for making a fuss about his absence at the burial.

According to him, he gave the highest donation among his colleagues although he wasn’t present for the burial which was held on a Saturday.

“A lot of stars did not attend the funeral on Saturday but mine was the topic of discussion. I have been insulted for it. And after all the insults hurled at me, it was only GHC1,000 you guys were able to donate. Go and ask how much I gave. Go and ask who gave the highest donation,” he stated.

LilWin’s comments stirred controversy on social media and even sparked a back-and-forth with some of his colleagues.

But responding to all these, Kolege in an interview with Poleeno Multimedia said there are people who gave very huge sums of money but chose not to trumpet it.

    Kolege, who seems unhappy about what he described as ‘unnecessary rifts’ among his colleagues on social media said;

“I don’t know where the youth and our colleagues want to take this industry but if this is the tangent we want to go, it won’t help us. I am mourning, I don’t have time to check who gave out what. Whatever the amount was, I never checked or asked. That shouldn’t be an issue. What I have lost is far bigger than GHC1,000, GHC2,000, or even GHC3,000. It won’t bring my wife back. I have lost a wife and a baby. The funeral wasn’t a GHC1,000 or even GHC2,000 worth of funeral. I will urge my colleagues to stop the unnecessary fights and unite.

“There are people who have chosen to remain anonymous but have given very huge contributions and shown massive support. One of our female colleagues gave out a huge sum of money, you will be frightened if I disclose the figure to you. I won’t mention names. Every bit of support was to honour my wife. And after all, is said and done, we shouldn’t be quarreling about who gave what. It doesn’t help. I love LilWin and he knows it. But I’ll urge him to put everything aside and focus. I’ll entreat my other colleagues to do same. I just returned to work and you guys are fighting among yourselves,” he stated.

  • Banks now have until 2022 to submit their audited financial statements – GSE

Banks now have until 2022 to submit their audited financial statements – GSE

The Ghana Association of Banks’ (GAB) request to postpone the submission of the audited financial accounts for 2022 by one month was granted by the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE).

GAB’s request, which was made on behalf of the eight listed banks, will now change the date from the end of March to April 30, 2023.
The banks are: GCB Bank, Royal Bank Ghana, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana, Société Générale, and Access Bank Ghana.

The extension will allow the banks to collaborate with their external auditors to successfully complete the audit’s objectives.

The deliberations, GAB explains, have implications for the assessment of expected credit losses and their impact on 2022 financial statements; hence the need for extension.

So far, stress tests are being conducted by relevant financial sector regulators to estimate the potential impact of the programme on various industry players: including banks; specialised deposit-taking institutions; insurance firms; asset managers; collective investment schemes; and pension fund trustees, among others.

The GSE said it is against this background that the date for filing the 2022 audited financial statements has been extended by one month to April 30, 2023. It also encouraged the banks that can conclude their audit in time to publish their audited financial statements within the existing statutory timeline.

Launched in December 2022, the DDEP encourages holders of Government of Ghana securities to voluntarily exchange approximately GH¢137billion of the domestic notes and bonds for new ones. The programme has however been met with resistance from various groups and analysts.

  • We are overwhelmed but those who enjoyed are quiet – Hopeson Adorye cries out over DDEP

We are overwhelmed but those who enjoyed are quiet – Hopeson Adorye cries out over DDEP

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hopeson Adorye, has charged the Ministry of Finance and its consultants who in his view benefitted from government bonds to take up the mantle of explaining to Ghanaians what the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) entails.

Hopeson Adorye claims that communicators of the governing party have been hanged out to dry by persons he believes enjoyed commissions from the bonds that have contributed to the country’s unsustainable debt levels.

The one-time parliamentary candidate of the party for the Kpone Katamanso constituency lamented on Peace FM that those who reaped benefits from the bonds have taken backstage while the persons he labels as ‘innocent’ have been commissioned to defend the DDEP.

He appealed to the Ministry of Finance to solicit the views of the Attorney-General before taking a decision on the domestic creditors.

He also urged Ken Ofori-Atta and his cohorts to exclude the individual bondholders in the arrangement, warning that any move contrary will worsen things for the government.

“We are overwhelmed by the situation. I believe by January 31 an agreement would have been reached and government would have adopted a position. We should make sure the final decision will be good news for Ghanaians. People want their money for various reasons so we should take a look at individual bondholders.

“There is a lot of money going waste that if we decide to be careful, we wouldn’t be in this situation. People have taken things free of charge and nothing happened. We have the money but we cant manage the money. We should seek the Attorney-General’s opinion on the matter. I believe the government will rescind the decision to go after the individual bondholders else we will know no peace in the country.

“Those who benefited will never come out and address the issue. When you say it, they accuse you of destroying the party but those who benefitted will never find time to explain it to the public. You are the one who took these decisions and benefitted from the bonds so you should be talking. Your consultants who benefitted should be doing the explanation on media platforms.

“They shouldn’t leave it to us the innocent people to struggle. People benefited and got commissions, they should be asking, how can you defend this? We have been overwhelmed by the whole thing so we need the consultants to come on media platforms. You can’t enjoy for us innocent people to suffer.

As part of conditionalities to achieve the IMF bailout, the government has recommended that all benefits due bondholders in 2023 will not be paid.

Per the arrangement, the payment of the benefits will resume in 2024 at the rate of 5%.

This arrangement has been widely criticized with critics saying that the government is worsening the situation of already burdened Ghanaians.

An Esigodini District, Matabeleland South, 20-year-old guy from Godlwayo Village 3 was found guilty of raping and killing a goat.

Over the past few years, reports of similar instances of animal sexual assault have come out of South Africa.
The thing that irritates me the most about these kinds of incidents is how the same people keep committing the same crimes even after they’ve been caught and punished.

Mthandazo Ndlovu appeared in front of Esigodini resident magistrate Nomagugu Sibanda, who charged him with two counts of bestiality by Section 74 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 of the Zimbabwean constitution. He pleaded guilty to both counts and was sentenced to 18 months in prison, with six months suspended for three years under the condition that he not be convicted of any bestiality-related offence during that time.

The remaining twelve months of Ndlovu’s sentence were suspended on the condition that he perform 420 hours of community service at Goddwayo Primary School. Ndlovu was caught in the act of raping two goats in the village of Ntabende, Esigodini, Zimbabwe.

What Kusi Boateng said in 2021 about the economic benefits of building the National Cathedral

In 2021, the Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral Secretariat, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, provided explanations on why there was the need for Ghana to build the national edifice.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, the preacher, who has recently been at the center of a lot of controversies, said that the building of a National Cathedral goes beyond a religious act.

He explained that the building of the edifice will bring a lot of economic benefits to the country, including boosting the tourism sector.

“We can go beyond the cathedral, into using this particular opportunity of being trusted by the president to, in a way, translate it into religious tourism. In this time and age of this nation, I don’t know why it is wrong for us to bring dynamism or for us to really come up with a concept that will be nothing short of religious tourism.

“What we are doing goes beyond building a church. What we are doing… you realise will bring a lot of air traffic (sic)… but it is a venture that will translate the purposes of our desire for revolution in our tourism industry,” he said.

Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng also explained that the economic benefits of the building to the nation are necessary, much as it will be historic.

“And so, at this time, in the history of this nation, we need such a thing. Besides its spiritual significance, we can never underestimate its economic benefits this nation will get,” he explained.

Rev. Kusi Boateng has recently been accused by the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, of a conflict of interest in business transactions undertaken by the National Cathedral Secretariat and the JNS Talents Centre, which runs a crèche at Dawhenya.

According to the MP, the company, which he later revealed was owned by the preacher but under a different name, was paid some GH¢2.6 million to help it build the cathedral.

The MP also produced documents to the effect that Kusi Boateng has multiple passports (including a diplomatic one) bearing different names apart from what he is popularly known as.

Rev. Kusi Boateng has however denied all the allegations against him.

In photos and videos shared online, Fifi Kwetey shared his excitement at returning home, adding that he felt really at home.

“Over the weekend, I was in Ketu South. It was such a wonderful experience to return to the constituency where I grew up and once served as an MP. Silence on ‘bad governance’ resulting in bitter lessons – Asiedu Nketiah tells Ghanaians

The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has called on Ghanaians not to sit aloof on the bad governance by this current administration.

His comment comes on the back of damning revelations from the 2022 Auditor General’s Report on COVID-19.

According to the A-G, a total of ¢21,844,189,185.24 was mobilised for the fight against the pandemic.

However, out of this amount, only ¢11,750,683,059.11 was spent on curbing the spread of the virus.

Commenting on the development, the National Chairman of the NDC indicated that Ghanaians will learn a more bitter lesson if they do not voice out on Akufo-Addo’s bad regime.

“The hardships and corruption emanating from the disastrous economic, social, political and developmental policy choices of the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia NPP administration provides useful lessons and insights that must improve our governance systems and practices for the benefit of the future generation.

“Particularly these bitter lessons make a solid case for active citizen awareness and participation in the choice and/or implementation of policies,” Mr. Nketiah stated in a Facebook post on January 23, 2023.

He continued: “If citizens opt to sit on the sidelines, or pursue narrow political agendas, they ultimately bear the consequences of bad governance, as is currently with the dubious debt exchange programme and as revealed by the audit report on the COVID-19 expenditures of the government.

“Citizens must be interested, vocal, and insistent on how they prefer to be governed. It’s their country and their future that is more at stake with every government action.”

Some Youth in the West Mamprusi Municipality in the North East Region believe to be supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party over the weekend nearly attacked their Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Aremeyaw Somo Lucky, who was at a radio station upon the invitation of the morning show host to discuss development issues confronting his municipality.

The angry mob gathered while the programme was ongoing, mobilized themselves, and besieged the forecourt of Tizaa Radio Station to protest against the MCE about some utterances they claimed he made on the show.

According to reports, two members of the group then walked into the studio and ordered the live programme to be truncated before chasing out the MCE.

They reportedly dragged the MCE from the studio to face the angry youth who were chanting violently and demanding permission from their leaders to “teach him a lesson”.

The MCE was however saved from being lynched by the timely intervention of some elders of Nalerigu after a long deliberation with the leaders of the NPP youth group.

Reports further indicated that the angry youth accused the MCE of defending the Regional Minister, Yidana Zakaria, who they have accused of diverting development projects meant for Nalerigu, the regional capital to Walewale, his home district.

Since 2021, tension has continued to increase between the youth of Nalerigu and the Regional Minister.

I was scared to come to Ghana – American citizen

Chloe, popularly known as Yaa Baby was born and raised in the United States of America and had to journey to Ghana together with her family at age ten. Her father was a missionary and was tasked to oversee the affairs of a Baptist Church in the West African country.

The preparation was, however, shrouded by fear due to the narratives they had heard about the country and being oblivious to how the journey would be.

“We were anxious because, for instance, I hadn’t sat in a plane before,” she said in her interview on The Delay Show. “I had heard about Ghana but I really didn’t know the country and the things people said about the country were not encouraging. It didn’t sound like a place you’d be happy to stay in there so I was a bit scared.”

“Both the whites and blacks abroad said it’s not interesting to stay in Ghana; there is erratic power supply, scarcity of food. These were Ghanaians and whites who had experienced Ghana. They say seeing is believing, I hadn’t seen Ghana so I came with an open mind. Regardless, I was jittery,” Yaa Baby added.

The situation was not the same for her parents because as missionaries, they left their fate in the hands of God.

Sharing her experience in Ghana, Yaa Baby, now married to a Ghanaian video director, Kofi Awuah, indicated that the weather was enough to make her recognize she was in another country.

“My first memory was the heat that welcomed me as soon as they opened the aircraft doors. I noticed there’s a different vibe and different scent,” she said. “It’s normal if you go to a place for the first time. It was a bit different from summer. I think we came in October so we were just about to experience harmattan so it was slightly different from summer.”

According to Yaa Baby who has maintained her American accent but speaks impeccable Twi language, they spent a week in Accra before heading to Kumasi.

“We lived at Kwadaso and moved to other places,” the actress and social media influencer recalled.

Having been homeschooled by her mother who holds a master’s degree, Yaa Baby said she wanted to be a nurse “but for one reason or the other, I just decided I wasn’t ready for that.”

Her parents stayed in Ghana until 2016 when they decided to return home. This was after living in Ghana for over a decade. She mentioned that she decided to not go with her parents because of her husband, Kofi Awuah.

“We married before they left,” she said.

Management Committee chairman of the Black Galaxies, Dr Toni Aubynn is optimistic that the team is determined to go all out to the finals and ultimately win the trophy of the ongoing 2022 African Nations Championship [CHAN].

Ghana opened their campaign with a defeat against Madagascar before fighting back to beat Sudan in their second Group C game.

With the team yet to know the opponent in the quarterfinal of the tournament, Dr Aubynn is convinced the team is determined to win the ultimate.

According to him, it was unfortunate that a football powerhouse like Ghana has twice played in the final of the competition but was yet to return home with the trophy.

“That’s our hope and prayer. It is quite unacceptable that since the inception of this tournament, a giant football nation like Ghana has not got its name inscribed on the trophy,” he told Graphic Sports.

“Don’t forget that the last time we qualified was 2014 so we really mean business,” he assured.

Dr Aubynn explained that the strong comeback that the players exhibited during their game against Sudan was an indication that the team was ready and willing to make the nation proud.

“The fact that we came back to win from a goal down probably attests to the determination and resolve of the team,” he noted.

  • Banking sector is going to crash – Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah predicts doom as DDEP negotiations continue

Banking sector is going to crash – Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah predicts doom as DDEP negotiations continue

A former chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament , Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah, is predicting doom for the financial sector if the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) is not handled well.

The former Member of Parliament for New Juaben South does not see any light in the immediate future and is concerned that the finance sector could crash.

Speaking in an interview with TV3, Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah explained that the current events are going to limit cash inflow to the banks.

He also elucidated that the country’s external creditors may not be interested in giving the country needed loans going forward.

He warned Ghanaians to expect lay-offs from banking institutions in the country and that could mark the beginning of the crisis.

When he was quizzed by a TV3 reporter whether he believes the banking sector will crash, Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah responded with a definite ‘Yes’ and went ahead to provide reasons for his position.

“Where we are now, this is not the time to massage issues. I don’t want to mention names but do you see the exposures of some banks? Some of them will collapse. Let’s say you are a bank and you are exposed to government bonds to the tune of GH¢2billion even at 20%, that is GH¢400million in interest payments for holdings. Do you know what that will mean to your balance sheet?

“Very soon banks are going to lay people off. We haven’t even gotten to the external. Now, all projects for which we contracted loans, the IPCs are not doing anything so very soon you will see the Obestebi Interchange and all those construction works grinding to a halt because the external creditors are saying if you are going to suspend debt repayment then we are not going to advance any further loan,” he said.

On how the situation can be addressed, Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah urged the government to take some responsibility and not impose everything on the citizens.

According to him, certain flagship programs of government will have to be rationalized along with the need to cut down on expenditure.

“I don’t know if we don’t appreciate the extent of the problem or we are hiding some information from somebody but where we are now there are no easy solutions out there. We have to look at revenue a bit more and close the loopholes. You can’t do all of this if you can’t do serious expenditure rationalization. We have to do expenditure rationalization,” he said.

As part of conditionalities to achieve the IMF bailout, the government has recommended that all benefit due bondholders in 2023 not be paid.

Per the arrangement, the payment of the benefits will resume in 2024 at the rate of 5%.

This arrangement has been widely criticized with critics saying that the government is worsening the situation of already burdened Ghanaians.

  • COPEC anticipates a drop in fuel price over “gold-for-oil policy

COPEC anticipates a drop in fuel price over “gold-for-oil policy

The government’s acquisition and distribution of goods from its “gold-for-oil” strategy to Oil Marketing Companies, claims the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, Ghana (COPEC), is to blame for any potential reduction.

However, Duncan Amoah, COPEC’s executive director, wants the commodity’s distribution to be accelerated in order to let prices fall and protect customers.

“The data related to this gold-for-oil arrangement is particularly important.
According to Citinewsroom.com, “We should entirely stop the politicians from intervening in fuel or trade if it doesn’t solve the situation with the rising fuel prices and the weakening cedi.”

“Because that will not be the situation Ghanaians are clamouring for. The numbers they will put up for the coming week will determine whether we are able to stimulate the market downwards or we are able to sustain prices where they are. Or there are some benefits to be derived as a people. If there are no benefits, then it will be difficult to go to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to ask for money to trade in oil, we will be burnt on all sides,” Duncan Amoah added.

Meanwhile, the price of petroleum products has increased in the second pricing window of January which took effect on Saturday 21, 2023.

The development has since been attributed to the recent depreciation of the cedi against major trading currencies despite witnessing some appreciation during the festive period in 2022.

To mitigate the situation, government has taken delivery of the first consignment for its ‘Gold-for-Oil’ policy for about 41,000 million metric tons of petroleum products.

The petroleum products are expected to be discharged and sold by state-owned enterprise BOST to Bulk Oil Distributing Companies (BDCs) across the country.

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in November 2022 first announced government’s plan to undertake the gold-for-oil initiative. The deal was hinged on buying oil products with Ghana’s gold instead of the US dollar.

Dr. Bawumia on Facebook earlier explained that the usage of gold to purchase oil would also address Ghana’s dwindling foreign reserves as well as reduce demand for US dollars by oil importers.

“It will fundamentally change our balance of payments and significantly reduce the persistent depreciation of our currency,” the Vice President earlier wrote.

Under the policy, government believes that using gold to purchase oil products would also bring stability to the exchange rate market and ensure domestic oil operators do not solely depend on foreign exchange to import products.

Asamoah Gyan reveals lowest moment in his career

Ex-Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has opened up about his lowest moment in his career as a footballer.

According to him, his open goal miss against Namibia in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] was the lowest moment in his career.

Gyan is the country’s all-time top goal scorer with 51 goals after making 109 appearances for the country.

Black Stars were playing their second group game as hosts of the tournament 15 years ago, after a late win over Guinea in their opening game.

In the game against Namibia, the late Junior Agogo scored the only goal to give Ghana all three points.

The Namibia goalkeeper was unable to hold onto the ball, leaving the then 22-year-old Gyan, who was gunning for his second goal of the competition, with everything but an empty net in front of him, but the striker shot it wide.

The next  day, Gyan with his brother Baffuor threatened to leave camp due to the ‘harsh’ criticisms the former suffered from Ghanaians

“Statistically we were ahead. Ghanaians thought we were going to beat them [Namibia] like 20-0. And it was one of those days. I wasn’t lucky. I think I was one of the best players on the field but I wasn’t lucky,” the former Black Stars captain told TV3.

“One opportunity that I got at an acute angle. The goalkeeper fumbled and the ball dropped. The keeper was out and I just hit the ball wide.

“And the following day…eii! That was the first time I experienced criticism. So there were just insulting. It was really bad.”

The former Sunderland and Liberty Professionals striker, however, confessed that it was a defining event in his career as it made him unassailable.

“It made me a strong guy. All my life, I was pampered and that was how I developed that tough skin.”

Gyan is currently clubless having parted ways with Legon Cities two years ago.

Dr Kofi Amoah wanted to reduce my salary – Kwasi Appiah

Ghana’s 2014 World Cup coach, Kwasi Appiah, has revealed that president of the now-defunct Normalisation Committee, Dr Kofi Amoah wanted to reduce his salary.

Appiah, who was on a $35,000 monthly salary during his second tenure between April 2017 and December 2019 had issues with Dr Amoah for his refusal to invite Sulley Muntari and Kevin Prince Boateng to the Black Stars despite an order from the then GFA boss.

Dr Amoah earlier threatened to sack the Appiah for not following his orders.

“He threatened to sack me but I told him I am not afraid of being sacked. Those threats, I have heard them several times but I’m not the type that those threats get to me,” Appiah said on Prime Take with Muftawu Nabila Abdulai on the Joy News channel on Sunday.

Appiah’s contract was expected to end in April 2019, but due to the AFCON which was moved to June-July, it was extended to have him lead the team to the competition, but before that Dr Amoah wanted to cut his salary.

“He had a conversation with me about my contract and he was thinking of reducing my salary, but I told him look, you can’t reduce my salary, then he should take the job.

“He thought I didn’t deserve the [$35,000] salary I was on and when you do that, you are disrespecting whoever you are dealing with.

“His posture even showed that he had no respect,” he noted.

He questioned if Dr Amoah would have had the temerity to try to reduce the salary “If it was white guy in charge of the team, or the one who was there before [Avram Grant], we were paying more than $50,000, would he have done that?

“Is it because I am a Ghanaian, I don’t deserve to be paid well? I even said if you are reducing my salary to give it to my assistants, I will be fine with it, but not to just reduce it, that I won’t accept.

“He should take the job,” he said.

Kwasi Appiah led the Black Stars to exit the tournament at the round of 16 stage after losing to Tunisia via penalty shootout.

Hearts of Oak head coach, Slavko Matic has attributed his team’s defeat to Dreams FC in the MTN FA Cup as hard luck after missed chances.

  • Debt Exchange Program will have an effect on 7.5 million policyholders – CIIG

Debt Exchange Program will have an effect on 7.5 million policyholders – CIIG

More than 7.5 million insurance policyholders in Ghana will be impacted by the government’s proposed Domestic Debt Exchange Program, according to the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG) (DDEP).

Solomon Lartey, the Institute’s president, thinks the initiative will have a negative effect on insurance companies, who run the risk of not being able to pay daily claims totaling GH4.5 million to policyholders in Ghana.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Governing Council of the CIIG’s Investiture Ceremony, Mr. Latery noted that over 40% of funds in the insurance business are invested in government securities and added that the DDEP will also have an impact on investor trust.

He further added the programme would impact insurance penetration which has been making giant strides over the past few years.

The CIIG president is therefore calling for the exemption of the insurance sector from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

Meanwhile, the Ghana Insurance Association (GIA) has also expressed concern over the Debt Exchange Programme and its associated impact on the insurance sector.

It noted that apart from defaulting on payment of daily claims, the DDEP will compound underwriting losses made by insurance firms operating in the country.

In the third quarter of 2022 alone, the GIA said records show that insurance firms in the country made total underwriting losses of about GH¢356 million.

“Since the industry is making underwriting losses overall, it means that insurance companies rely on investment income to meet their claim obligations to policyholders. Therefore, any debt exchange programme will negatively affect our ability to pay claims and lead to asset-liability mismatch,” the GIA stressed.

“Taking into consideration the fact that insurance companies are making underwriting losses, the effect of the debt exchange programme will be so devastating that there will not be an insurance industry after we surmount the economic challenges,” it added.

As part of efforts to secure an IMF bailout and address the country’s unsustainable debt situation, government launched the DDEP inviting bondholders to voluntarily exchange approximately GH¢137 billion domestic notes and bonds of the Republic including ESLA and Daakye for a package of new bonds.

The DDEP has since received rejection and backlash by various groups of bondholders who have urged their members not to sign unto the debt restructuring exercise of government without proper consultation and consensus.

VIDEO: Watch Eddie Nketiah’s double for Arsenal against Man Utd

Ghanaian striker Eddie Nketiah was the star for Arsenal on Sunday as they defeated Manchester United on Sunday at Emirates Stadium.

The striker scored twice with the winner coming in the 90th minute as they opened a five-point lead over second-placed Manchester City.

Manchester City’s earlier win over Wolverhampton Wanderers applied pressure on the Gunners but they responded with character and quality, even after going behind, to secure a five-point advantage at the top with a game in hand.

United’s man of the moment Marcus Rashford fired home a superb right-foot strike from 25 yards to give them a 17th-minute lead.

Arsenal responded fiercely and were level seven minutes later when Granit Xhaka’s cross created a heading opportunity for Nketiah, who got in ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka at the far post.

Bukayo Saka’s angled drive put Arsenal ahead eight minutes after the break but their advantage lasted only six minutes, with Lisandro Martinez heading his first goal for the club after keeper Aaron Ramsdale dropped a corner.

Arsenal looked the more likely winners in the closing stages, with Saka hitting the post and Nketiah denied by David de Gea’s outstanding save.

The pressure paid off in the closing moments when Nketiah – a striker who is doing an outstanding job filling in for injured Gabriel Jesus – turned in from close range to spark wild scenes of celebration at Emirates Stadium. VIDEO BELOW:

I was nearly deboardenised for being outspoken – Dr Spio-Garbrah

A former Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has revealed that his headmaster nearly deboardenised him because he had been outspoken on issues he deemed critical.

According to him, during his time at the Achimota School, he organised a demonstration against one of his teachers who was “misbehaving.”

He said it was a platform that allowed other students to voice out their concerns against the teacher in question.

”One of my teachers wanted me to remain a Day – student because unknown to myself, I was also radical in my thinking and so because he was misbehaving, I helped to organized some students to demonstrate against him, and we organised a meeting with him in the Gyamfi House, that’s the house I was in. There was a barrage of accusation against him. So he got very red in the face and walked out the common room.”

He added that his school prefect had revealed to him that his master was quite unhappy with his approach.

According to the politician, the master had wanted to expel him from the boarding house but found out his parents’ diplomatic status.

Recalling what his headmaster had written on his report card, he said “were I not to know that his father is serving Ghana as an ambassador outside the country, I would have no hesitation to recommend that you should be made a day student.”

Dr. Spio-Garbrah explained that at the time the situation occurred, late former President Jerry John Rawlings lived near his home and must have heard about it.

He said the incident must have influenced the decision of the late President to appoint him to lead the communications team of the National Democratic Congress and “speak better to the people of Ghana.”

The politician revealed that he was recruited together with other children into a “young pioneer movement” and were taught public service skills.

He is of the view that today’s young people do not understand what being a pioneer was at the time, saying many youth only care about big houses and cars.

He explained that his mother would normally emphasize that public service is service to the people and that had stuck with him forever.

Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah was appointed as the Minister for Trade and Industry from 2014 to 2017 under the Mahama administration. He was the Minister for Education under late President Jerry John Rawlings from 1998 to 2001 and also served as Ghana Ambassador to the United States of America in 1994 to 1997.

The Maltese Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade visits the NLA on working days

The minister of foreign, European, and trade for Malta, Dr. Ian Borg, has assured that his country remains committed to enhancing the partnership it enjoyed with Ghana and the National Lottery Authority (NLA) for the last 60 years.

He explained that the collaboration must be expanded to cover other areas of national development for the benefit of the peoples of both countries.

Dr Borg stated this when he unveiled the bust of the first Director General of the NLA, Mr Francis William Brennan, a Maltese who helped in establishing the authority and organised its first draw in 1962.

Dr Borg noted that the relationship between the two nations, especially with the National Lottery Authority (NLA) exemplified the strong bond which should be nurtured to benefit other areas of national development.

He commended the staff and management of NLA for guiding the smooth evolution and growth of the NLA since its inception 60 years ago.

He said listening to the story of the role Malta played in the establishment of the NLA, he was filled with pride because “a simple act of solidarity between two governments not only led to the establishment of this important national institution but also paved the way for closer ties between our two countries”.

Dr Borg said 60 years of friendly relationship was thriving and it was for that reason that he had visited the NLA to memorialize the contribution of Malta and Mr Brennan Hall to the NLA in Ghana and cement their relationship.

He said the recent visit of NLA officials to Mlata also served to rekindle and revive the collaboration between the two nations and their peoples.

A Board Member of the NLA, Mr Philip Kofi Aning, assured that the NLA would continue to tap from the experience, expertise, and knowledge of their counterparts in Malta to grow and expand its base.

He commended the Maltese government for the reception offered the staff and management that visited Malta.

The Director General of the NLA, Samuel Awuku indicated that as part of its strategic objective, the authority planned to acquire new draw machines and renovate the Brennan Hall into a world class draw centre in line with international standards, and this was also to preserve the hall for generations yet unborn.

He said it would also help in attaining its mandate of generating extra revenue to be able to offer more assistance to the vulnerable, aged, orphans and destitute in
the society whiles supporting government’s developmental agenda.

He described the visit by Dr Borg to Ghana and the NLA premises as concrete indications of how Malta intended to deepen the bilateral ties between the government of Ghana and Malta.

Mr Awuku said the NLA held in high esteem the Maltese government for playing a great role in the establishment of the NLA and indicated that to express its gratitude, the NLA memorialize Mr Brennan the first Director General with a bust and named the hall after him.

“The two memorials, the bust and the Brennan Hall, he explained were permanent reminders of the brotherly relationship between the two nations, particularly with
    the NLA.

He announced that the NLA was seeking collaboration to facilitate the visit of some of its staff to undertake training in Malta to sharpen their skills to expedite the
    growth of the NLA.
