Members of the West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly have kicked against the auctioning of vehicles belonging to the Assembly in a special meeting held on Tuesday.

The members said they were not informed about the intention and also not privy to the processes that went on regarding the sale of the vehicles and as to whether the vehicles were properly valued to the benefit of the Municipality.

  • December 7 polls the most important in Ghana’s history – Ambassador Ayisi Boateng

Ghana’s Ambassador to South Africa, George Ayisi Boateng has described the upcoming elections as the most significant in the history of the country.

This according to him, is the reality because the polls will provide an opportunity for the nation to chose the path of continuity in progress or retrogress.

He explained that a vote for president Akufo-Addo will represent the path for continuity in development, whereas, a vote for former President Mahama will be the other way round.

In an interview with this reporter, Ambassador Ayisi Boateng, said the Akufo- Addo-led government, has laid a solid foundation for massive development drive in the country.

He posited that the nation was on her knees when the government took over the reins of administration on January 7, 2017.

But due to dedication and commitment to service, coupled with the display of competence, the economic fundamentals have been stabilised and ready for a gargantuan take of.

In spite of the daunting challenges, the founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), indicated that the government has managed to implement some key policies that have come to define the development path of the nation.

Chief among the policies he stated are the free Senior High School (SHS) policy, planting for food and jobs, restoration of teacher trainee and nurses allowances.

Also, the meaning and value for money infrastructural development dotted all over the country, is a significant indication of the path of progress the nation is heading.

Ambassador Ayisi Boateng argued profusely that it takes a decisive and bold leader in the calibre of President Akufo-Addo, to implement free SHS in the midst of the economic hardship the nation was faced with.

He mentioned the introduction of the free SHS policy as the best thing to have ever happened to the country because the policy will provide the needed human capital to spearhead the nation’s development drive in the future.

Ambassador Ayisi Boateng, therefore, entreated the electorates to be more concerned with the path of development the nation has chosen under President Akufo Addo and endorse him for a second term on December 7.

The former board member of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), further tasked the electorates not to repeat the mistake of 2008, when voters failed the nation by voting for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, had voters voted for the NPP to continue the line of progress in place at the time, the nation would have been placed on a higher level by now.

The NPP founding member contended that the vote for the NDC in that elections derailed the gains the ex-President Kufuor’s administration made and brought the nation back to the path of retrogression.

“This time around, another opportunity has prevailed and we can’t afford to fail ourselves” Ambassador Ayisi Boateng observed.

Out of the 268 pregnancies recorded, 220 are Junior High School students. The directorate stated that these are provisional figures of the eight districts of the Upper East Region,

The districts are Kassena-Nankana Municipal, Kassena-Nankana West, Talensi, Nabdam, Pusiga, Garu and Tempane Districts with Talensi having the highest of 75 pregnancies and 83 marriages.

According to a GNA report, the Regional Girls Education Officer of the National Population Council (NPC), Rose Akanson, made this known while addressing stakeholders at a forum on the impact of COVID-19 on teenage pregnancy, organized by the Regional Directorate of the NPC.

Rose Akanson added, “30 nursing mothers took part in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) while 26 others sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) within the eight districts.”

The high rate of pregnancies is attributed to poverty and coronavirus restriction.

“Some “COVID-19 restrictions”, and parental irresponsibility, “although the preliminary findings revealed that as young as 12-year-old girls had become pregnant. Most of the girls who have always been pregnant over the years were partly due to late enrollment, you have a girl who is 19 years and she is in JHS one and in the Talensi District most of the pregnancies and marriages were recorded in the upper primary,” she said.

  • Australian police arrest 44 men and rescue 16 children in child abuse investigation

Australian police have arrested 44 men and rescued 16 children from across the country as part of a year-long nationwide investigation into child abuse.

Arrests of all the suspects, aged 19 to 57, were made in every Australian state, except the Northern Territory.

The accused face a total of 350 charges between them of possessing child exploitation material, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said.

Those detained allegedly used a cloud storage platform to share the abuse, which the AFP described as “the most abhorrent produced”.

Eleven suspects were arrested in Queensland, eight in New South Wales, 11 in Victoria, nine in South Australia, two in Tasmania, one in Australian Capital Territory and two in Western Australia.

They worked in a range of industries including construction, transport, law enforcement and hospitality.

Some of the alleged offenders, who are also accused of producing their own child abuse material online, were allegedly in possession of material that was produced by a man arrested by the AFP in 2015 under Operation Niro, which resulted in the dismantling of an international organised paedophile syndicate.

Sixteen children were “removed from harm” in the latest crackdown under Operation Molto, an ongoing investigation, involving hundreds of police and specialists across Australia.

AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw said identifying victims was “a race against time”.

“Pixel by pixel, our investigators painstakingly look for clues and never give up and the tools they use give Australian police access to world leading expertise,” he said.

“Viewing, distributing or producing child exploitation material is a crime. Children are not commodities and the AFP and its partner agencies work around-the-clock to identify and prosecute offenders.”

A total of 134 children have been rescued between July 2019 and June 2020, the AFP said, including 67 internationally, as a result of its investigations.

“The Akatsi North MP said the Bill is not part of the Bills being considered before Parliament goes on recess in the coming weeks. According to him, the Education Committee of Parliament had recommended that there was a need for further deliberations to be held before the Bill is considered,” the Citi News report explained.

  • Opuni trial: Analyzed lithovit liquid fertilizer was dilute – Witness

Dr Emmanuel Yaw Osei-Twum, the fifth Prosecution witness in the trial involving Dr Stephen Opuni and two others, says the Lithovit liquid fertilizer submitted for analysis was dilute.

“We concluded that the solution was very dilute,” he said.

Dr Osei-Twum, who is a lecturer at the Chemistry Department, University of Ghana, giving his evidence in chief led by Mr Evelyn Keelson, the Chief State Attorney, said in April 2017, the Department had a request from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to analyze a sample for them.

He said the sample was a liquid sample of Lithovit fertilizer in a plastic bottle and that in May the same year, they carried out the analysis.

He said per the terms, they were to determine the constituents available in the sample and to find out how much of each was in the sample.

He said the Department was also to tell EOCO, whether the sample presented was fertilizer or not.

Dr Osei-Twum said they prepared the sample by treating it with acid and submitted it to what was called acidic absorption spectroscopy and the rest was to calculate to find out how much of its constituents were present.

Mrs Keelson asked the witness to tell the court, the outcome of the analysis and the witness said “we found calcium carbonate at 3.22 per cent, magnesium carbonate at 0.48 per cent, while other compounds are very low in amounts.”

The Prosecution presented a document for the witness to identify, which the witness said it was the report submitted to EOCO.

The State Attorney asked the witness, who at the Department conducted the analysis and Dr Osei-Twum said the lead analysts were Professor Augustine Kwame Donkor and himself and was signed by Dr Louis Doamekpor, Head of the Department.

Asked to explain page six of the report, the witness said the first column on the left was labelled parameter and they were supposed to determine the constituents of Lithovit for which the conducted literature.

“Later on we obtained the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) that confirmed what we have found in the literature,” he said.

Explaining further, Dr Osei-Twum, who is an Associate Professor at the University of Ghana, said the results indicated that all the constituents in percentages were very low.

He said looking at page 8 of the report, Lithovit was a nano-fertilizer and was used as an alternative to conventional fertilizer on vegetables, citrus, cotton and rice farms.

“Sample brought to the Department by EOCO was identified as Lithovit fertilizer,” he added.

He said the application of Lithovit on Cocoa farms from nursery to the growth and yield stages, remained experimental because currently there was no evidence for its application on Cocoa plants.

The Lecturer said per their recommendation, preliminary investigations should be conducted before widespread use.

He said since Lithovit was base, it was advisable to avoid acidic soil, hence the pH of all soil in the Cocoa growing area should be determined prior to the use of lithovit.

He said the composition on the MSDS had Calcium carbonate as 84.5 per cent but their analysis had Calcium carbonate as 3. 22 per cent, while magnesium carbonate was 4. 6 per cent and their test results was 0.48 per cent.

The witness ended his evidence in chief as Mr Samuel Cudjoe, counsel for Dr Opuni, cross-examined him.

Mr Cudjoe asked the witness, whether he knew the accused person but he answered in the negative.

Asked, whether the sample tested by the Department had any connection with the first accused person, Dr Opuni, but the witness said, “l do not know him.”

“Did A1 give you the sample, which your Department tested?” Mr Cudjoe asked, but the witness told the Court that he had never met the accused person or any of his representatives.

The Counsel enquired from the witness, whether he was a permanent staff of the Department and he answered in the affirmative.

Mr Cudjoe said the witness had passed the retirement age and could not still be at post but the witness said the testing was done by them and he was still a permanent staff but currently, he was a part-time lecturer.

He asked the witness, whether EOCO briefed him before the testing but he said he was not briefed.

The Counsel pointed to the witness that the Department was briefed on the investigation EOCO was doing but the witness said if the Department had been briefed, then whoever might have been briefed should be the Head of the Department.

Mr Nutifafa Nutsukpui, the Counsel for Seidu Agongo and Agricult Ghana Limited, asked the witness, whether he and one Prof Donkor wrote the report and he said they prepared the report.

He asked the witness to tell the court, what he meant by preparing the report and the witness said they put together the data, formatted the data and prepared the data in a way the report should be written.

Asked, who wrote the report, the witness said the Department had a secretary, who wrote reports for scientists.

Whether the witness reviewed the report, he answered in the affirmative.

The Counsel asked the witness, whether he knew that apart from Cocoa, COCOBOD regulated other crops but the witness answered in the negative.

Dr Opuni and Mr Seidu Agongo are facing 27 charges, including defrauding by false pretences, wilfully causing financial loss to the state, money laundering, corruption by a public officer and contravention of the Public Procurement Act.

They have both pleaded not guilty to the charges and are on a GH¢300,000.00 self-recognisance bail each.

The trial was adjourned to October 27, 2020, for further cross-examination by Mr Nutsukpui.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Greater Accra Region has stepped up efforts to meet its target of two million new members by the end of the year.

Mr Bernard Brown, the Greater Accra Regional Director NHIA, noted that the region fell behind in attaining the target because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Brown said the region had so far registered 1.7 million new members this year, representing about 76 per cent.

Mr Brown said this at the Greater Accra Regional Half-year operational performance review meeting held in Accra.

The meeting, which brought together managers, reviewed the regional operations in terms of achievements on the membership drive and revenue, logistic challenges and the way forward.

The Regional Director of NHIA said there was a drop of 100,000 members in the second quarter compared to the first quarter of the year, adding that it was proper the managers discussed the factors that contributed to the fall.

Mr Brown said the region would commence house to house and door to door registration to boost the membership.

Additionally, the NHIA would also start with registration of new members in churches, mosques, markets and organisations.

He lauded Ayawaso and Weija for recording a marginal increase in their membership drive, adding that the NHIA would found out the reasons for the increase so that those performing below average could learn from them.

Mr Brown said the region’s revenue fell and appealed to the managers to come out with strategic ideas to boost revenue.

He said without revenue, the NHIA would go down on its knees.

  • No African country has moral right to criticise abuse against EndSARS protestors Analyst

Security analyst, Col (rtd) Festus Aboagye, has said the use of state security against peaceful protests has become prevalent in Africa.

According to him, no African country currently has the moral right to ask Nigeria to stop the human rights abuses against protestors that have been recorded in the wake of the End SARS protests.

His comments to GhanaWeb follow protests by tens of thousands of Nigerian youth against police brutality.

The youth have demanded the abolition of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), which has been accused of unlawful arrests, torture, and extrajudicial killings.

Violent escalation on October 20, 2020, in Lagos, which resulted in multiple deaths, has further agitated protestors.

The UN, AU and ECOWAS have all condemned the attacks on the protestors.

“No African leader has the moral high ground to go and preach to his or her neighbour because, invariably, you find similar situations in all countries.

“In Ghana Ayawaso West Wuogon comes to mind. It is not about how many people were injured and that nobody died. It is about the sheer use of coercive force by institutions that are grounded in the constitution to go and conduct some kind of paramilitary operations that are resulting in the injuries and so on,” he told GhanaWeb.

He said it is possible Nigerians would head to Ghana over the tensions in that country because Ghana presents the most favourable country for them in terms of language and shared history.

  • Disqualified aspirants could serve up to 10 years if found guilty of forgery – Samson Lardi Anyenini

Legal Practitioner, Samson Lardi Anyenini, has said the five aspirants disqualified by the Electoral Commission could serve prison sentence if found guilty of forging official documents.

According to him, the disqualified aspirants could serve a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 10 years imprisonment.

“If the decision of the Electoral Commission is charging them with forging of official documents, then they are looking at a maximum of 10 years imprisonment if they were found guilty. But if the decision was to charge them for forging other documents, then they are looking to a maximum of 3 years in jail,” Joy News quoted the lawyer in its publication on October 22, 2020.

Mr Anyenini added that aside from the imprisonment, the parties who have been found guilty will not be able to contest as presidential aspirants any longer as the constitution requires that you must first be qualified to be a Member of Parliament.

“Now if they were found guilty, what that means is that they will not have the opportunity next time to contest. Because to be qualified to be a president, the constitution requires that you must first be qualified to be a Member of Parliament. The constitution, again says that you are not qualified to be a Member of Parliament if you have been convicted of certain crimes such as fraud, dishonesty, and even questions of moral turpitude.”

The Electoral Commission on Monday disqualified five of these aspirants from contesting the December 7 polls, citing breaches on their forms.

Kofi Koranteng, Marricke Kofi Game, Akwasi Addae Odike, Kwasi Busumbru, and Nana Agyenim Boateng were those disqualified.

The Election Commission said the elections management body will file an official complaint to police against the failed presidential aspirants for allegedly forging supporting documents to their nominations forms, leading to their disqualification.Disqualified aspirants could serve up to 10 years if found guilty of forgery – Samson Lardi Anyenini

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in 2017 identified that the export of bulk minerals were undertaken by companies without proper tracking mechanisms to confirm the actual volume of minerals produced and exported, the sector minister, Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, has said.

He said to address the problem, the Ministry has constructed two weighbridges at Apemanim in the Ahanta West District of Western Region and Awaso in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso- Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.

“I am pleased to say that as it stands today, gold exported out of the country passes through the assay process for validation of the actual value.”

  • NPP has fulfilled most of its manifesto promises, Ghanaians can see them Kajaji Chief

The acting President of the Nkomi-Kajaji Traditional Council in the Sene East District of the Bono East Region has dismissed claims that the Akufo-Addo administration has failed to fulfil the promises it made to Ghanaians ahead of the 2016 elections.

According to Nana Osore Sunkwa, no objective Ghanaian can dispute the manifesto achievements of the government, and anyone who does so is only refusing to face reality.

“You have fulfilled majority of your manifesto promises; no one can challenge that” Nana Sunkwa declared on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Kajaji at a durbar of chiefs and people to welcome Vice President Bawumia at the beginning of his two day tour of the Bono East Region.

“Let me give one example. For decades there has been no proper train moving in Ghana, but now we see works ongoing to get the trains running again,” Nana Sunkwa continued.

“We have seen the effect of Planting for Food and Jobs on our farmers; the afforestation jobs, NABCO, restoration of the Teacher and Nursing Training allowances, and the biggest of all, Free SHS.

“Your Excellency, we have seen the digitisation work you have been doing, and how it has made life easier for all of us in this country.

“Today, more local people are getting scholarships to school because you have decentralised the application. I was a member of the district interview panel, and I know how happy many parents are because their children have qualified for the scholarship.

“The matter of a new region has been on our hearts for years, and though many governments promised us, you are the ones who have fulfilled your promise. We are most grateful.

“You made all of these promises and more in your manifesto, and you have fulfilled most of them. We know that if we give you more time you will fulfill all” he stated.

Nana Sunkwa indicated that even projects that were not in the manifesto are receiving attention.

“When President Akufo-Addo visited us not long ago, he cut sod for work to begin on our major road, from Atebubu to Kajaji. We can see construction going on, and we are confident that we will soon see coaltar on our roads”.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia reminded the chiefs and people of Kajaji that the December 7 election is about safeguarding the major gains made so far in our national development agenda, and a vote for the NPP would ensure even more equitable sharing of the national cake to every nook and cranny of the nation.

“Give Nana Akufo-Addo and our Parliamentary candidates the opportunity to serve you even better. Sene East has always voted NDC, but there has been no corresponding development. But in less than 4 years of voting for an NPP government, you can see the improvements. Vote NPP, and see even more development” Dr Bawumia urged.

  • Population, Housing census to take place in April 2021

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that the next Population and Housing Census (PHC) has been scheduled between April and May 2021.

He said funding had been secured for the census, and that the government was committed to conducting the exercise, in spite of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Akufo-Addo said this when he launched the 2017/2018 Agriculture Census National Report at the Jubilee House in Accra yesterday.

Although the agriculture census is supposed to be done every 10 years, the current one — conducted in 2017/2018 — comes 33 years after the last one.

The first was in 1963, the second in 1975 and the third in 1985.

    Shameful

President Akufo-Addo described as shameful the fact that for over three decades the agriculture census had not taken place.

As a result, he said, policy — prior to his assumption of office — had been based largely on guesswork, and that it was no wonder that that period witnessed systematic decline in agriculture.

    Regular feature

The President said the conduct of the census must become a regular feature of national life.

He said it was to realise that goal that he assented to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) Act 1003 (2019) on September 24, 2019.

He said Section 35 of the act urged the GSS to collaborate with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to conduct an agriculture census within three years after the holding of the population census.

    Earlier explanations

Recently, the GSS announced that the 2020 PHC would take place in 2021, with the explanation that the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the “destabilisation of the population” by the political peak season, had necessitated the postponement of the census to next year.

The GSS had originally fixed March 15, 2020 for the exercise, but it was rescheduled twice to May 15, 2020 and then June 28, 2020, with the explanation that the latter date was to allow for the service to conduct a mapping process and build quality data for the main exercise.

The Head of Publicity for the PHC, Mr Francis Nyarko Larbi, had earlier explained to the Daily Graphic that the target now was to conduct the census early next year.

    Preparation

While observing that the postponement of the exercise was unfortunate, Mr Larbi said it was nonetheless an opportunity to prepare adequately for it at the right time.

“This is not the time to relax and say that there is more time for us. The PHC is a big project and so we are still planning and working on other things,” he added.

He said the GSS had already trained officers at the national level through virtual training programmes and the initiative was being replicated at the district level.

    Background

This is not the first time the country has postponed a PHC.

A population census was first undertaken by the British colonial administration in the Gold Coast in 1891.

Since then, censuses have been conducted every decade, except in 1941 when the 1939-45 World War interrupted the series.

    In post-independence Ghana, five population censuses have been conducted — 1960, 1970, 1984, 2000 and 2010.

Per the 10-year interval arrangement, the sixth post-independence census was to be conducted this year.

He said, with the rate of contamination of the river, he wonders how much it will cost the government to supply clean water to the residents of Sekondi-Takoradi and surrounding towns and villages.

Speaking on the floor of parliament, the Majority Leader said, more needs to be done to ensure illegal mining is stopped in these areas.

“Mr Speaker, if we have to treat the polluted Pra river and Offin river, and purge it of all these chemicals that the galamseyers are using to pollute the river, I am wondering at what cost we are going to do this?” he asked.

“If we have to fall on river Pra, there will have to be a much more determined effort to stop mining in both Offin and Pra river so that the integrity of the waters could be attested to; other than that Mr Speaker, I am afraid of this venture (Sekondi-Takoradi water treatment plant), as quoted by Daily Graphic

He made these comments during the debate on the approval of a total amount of €80.3 million loans to finance the Sekondi-Takoradi Water Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion Project on the floor of Parliament.

The loans are Oeke-backed agreement amounting to €70,733,432 and commercial loan amounting to €10,500,000 between Ghana represented by Ministry of Finance and Commerzbank Aktiengesellschaft.

The credit facility is to secure funding for the implementation of the project, which includes; the construction of an intake, a new water treatment plant with its ancillary structure, transmission and distribution pipelines, service reservoirs, standpipes and house connection.

The beneficiary communities include: Takoradi, Effiakuma, Kwesimintsim, Kojokrom, West Tanokrom, Anaji, Sekondi, New Takoradi, Essikado, Apremdo, Keikum, Ntankoful, Ngyyiresia, East Tanokrom, Effia Village and Fijai.

The rest are Assakai, Aduembra, Kansaworado, Nkroful, Anoadze, Abuesi, Apowa, Inchaban, Ketan, Dixcove, Estates, Shama, Hwendo, Hotopo and surrounding villages.

When completed, the project is expected to increase agriculture production, and boost the commercial potential of the twin-city, as well a more respectable front to visitors arriving from neighboring countries.

  • Majority Leader worried over effect of galamsey on Takoradi Water Expansion Project

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has bemoaned the resurgence of illegal mining activities on Rivers Offin and Pra and its threat to the Secondi-Takoradi Water Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion Project.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament during a debate on a loan agreement for the Project, the Majority Leader demanded urgent steps from the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation to halt mining activities on Rivers Pra and Offin.

“I will strongly urge the Minister for Water Resources to have second look and… we have to be much more determined to stop mining operations in both the Offin and Pra River so the integrity of the waters can be attested to.”

“Other than that Mr. Speaker, I am afraid of this venture,” Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu warned.

Parliament on Tuesday approved two separate loans of over € 81 million to finance the Secondi-Takoradi Water Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion Project.

The loans are an Oeke-Backed agreement amounting to € 70,733,432 and commercial loan amounting to € 10,500,000 between Ghana represented by Ministry of Finance and Commerzbank Aktingesellschaft.

The credit facility is to secure funding for the implementation of the project, which includes; the construction of an intake, a new water treatment plant with its ancillary structure, transmission and distribution pipelines, service reservoirs, standpipes and house connection.

The beneficiary communities include: Takoradi, Effiakuma, KwesimintsimKojokrom, West Tanokrom, Anaji, Sekondi, New Takoradi, Essikado, Apremdo, Keikum, Ntankoful, Ngyyiresia, East Tanokrom, Effia Village and Fijai.

The project is expected to be completed in 40 months after commencement.

The Pra and Offin rivers are among the worst hit by illegal mining activities.

Despite earlier aggression in 2017 from the Akufo-Addo administration to end the illegal mining, the country has made minimal gains on that front.

As recently as July 2020, the Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce Operation Vanguard confiscated and destroyed some mining equipment belonging to illegal miners at Dunkwa On-Offin in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality in the Central Region.

  • Lordina out of politics because she cant stand lies and propaganda Mahama

Former President and leader for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has given reasons his wife is conspicuously missing from the political space in recent times even as he seeks to return to government.

He disclosed that the former first lady was traumatized by the lies told about her in 2016 and has decided to take a back role in politics.

According to him, she has decided to focus on her foundation so that her husband can also focus on his politics.

In case the NDC is declared the winner of the 2020 election, Mahama says his wife will continue to focus on her Foundation and will not be actively involved in politics.

He indicated that the party currently has a female Vice President and will also have a gender Minister who will be championing issues with regards to women empowerment and anything centred on women.

“In 2016, there were a lot of lies against her [Lordina] so she was a bit traumatised by the experience so she wants to take a back role, let me do my politics,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Asempa FM which was monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

  • Studies show the position of the ballot matters – Political analyst

Political marketing strategist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, Dr Kobby Mensah, has said that the position of flagbearers on ballot papers play a role on how Ghanaians will vote.

According to Dr Kobby Mensah, being on top makes it easier for voters to decide easily rather than the middle as voters tend to play with their ballot in between.

Speaking on JoyNews, “Studies show the position of the ballot matters. When you are in the middle of the pack, there is a tendency that people could play their ballot in between.”

“Being at the top of the pack helps because it is at the eye level. Among floaters or middle ground voters, top or bottom of the pack is a preferred choice,” he added.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana led by Jean Mensa has officially conducted the balloting process for qualified presidential aspirants and political parties for the upcoming December 7, 2020.

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be on top of the ballot paper in the December 7 election.

  • Ghanaian Times: Lets avoid danger looming on Kaneshie-Odorkor highway

Under the headline “Beware! Kaneshie-Odorkor highway becoming dangerous,” the Ghanaian Times on Monday published a harrowing story about looming danger on that highway in Accra.

The story painted a dangerous picture of portions of the road that had become a danger to road users.

The story, accompanied by pictures, showed several portions of the road with potholes containing water and burst drains out of them water gushing onto the highway.

Many parts of the road have become impassable following erosion that has taken place due to rainfall in the past few weeks.

The situation has forced some parts of the dual carriage road into a single lane as drivers try to dodge and meander through the potholes and in some cases to avoid faecal matter from the gutters.

What is more worrying is that the stench emanating from surrounding drainage system has become a nightmare for residents, shop owners, and food vendors around the area, as well as passengers.

According to the story, several appeals to authorities to plug the potholes and desilt the drains have not yielded any positive result.

The Ghanaian Times is surprised that a major road like the Kaneshie-Odorkor highway would be left in such deplorable state for it to pose a danger to all road users.

The road, which is a first class international highway, was constructed mainly for road users to ply in comfort but the situation today has turned the road into a death trap.

It is our humble plea to the Highways Authority, Urban Roads and the District Assemblies in the area to take immediate steps to repair the drains and the roads in order to prevent future calamity.

Anybody who has used that stretch of road in the last few days will attest to the fact that it is not easy to ply it without coming across obstacles that hitherto could not be found on it.

The whole place is now an eyesore and motorists struggle on it everyday, which should not be the case.

To avoid any unfortunate situation, authorities must, as a matter of urgency, repair the roads, and desilt the gutters to ensure that we avoid road crashes and loss of lives on the once beautiful highway the country can boast of.

We must not wait till we are confronted with road accident on that road before we take action.

    We must act now.

Speaking at Tarkwa-Nsuaem in the Western Region, Mr Mahama wondered why the Akufo-Addo government does not appear to be interested in confiscating the properties of NAM1 but rather venting their anger on customers.

“What is so special about NAM 1 that Akufo-Addo is shielding him? Why do you unleash the police on innocent customers while NAM 1 walks free,” he fumed.

He assured that his next government will thoroughly investigate NAM1 and his directors and use all legitimate means to retrieve the funds.

  • NAGRAT demands 25% increase in base pay for 2021

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) wants the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to immediately begin negotiations on the base pay for 2021.

The government in 2019 increased the base pay on the Single Spine Salary Structure by 12% across board for the year 2020.

This increased the rate from GH¢9.10 per day in 2019 to GH¢10.19 in 2020.

Speaking to Citi News, the President of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu, who lamented the poor conditions of service of public sector workers, said the current economic hardships demanded a twenty-five percent increment for the 2021 base pay.

“We are calling on the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Public Sector Joint negotiations committee as a whole to quickly reconvene for us to negotiate the base pay for 2021. As a union, we will not shy away from indicating that looking at the economic situation and the challenges that Ghanaian teachers face we will negotiate the base pay for 2021 with a 21% increment. So NAGRAT is calling on all stakeholders to arrange a meeting to discuss this.”

Mr. Carbonu also called for the review of transfer grants for teachers.

“Somebody is just indicating that when you are transferred below 50 kilometres, you are not paid transfer grants. I do not know who negotiated that, workers did not negotiate that. Workers are transferred without accommodation packages. Somebody is introducing a certain strange clause. We want to find out who did and when it was because it seems workers are being taken advantage of.

  • NDC has better proposal for Technical Education Prof Naana Jane

The running mate of former President John Dramani Mahama contends the National Democratic Congress has the best blueprint for comprehensive technical education in Ghana.

According to Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, the conversion of Polytechnics into Technical Universities under her watch as then Education Minister was part of a larger industrialization plan for Ghana.

Speaking on Abusua Nkomo on Kumasi based Abusua FM, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang pointed out that the NDC government undertook the most rigorous research and audit of the technical education infrastructure before rolling out the Technical University Program.

“We did a good technical audit of the schools, conducted a capacity audit of its staff and assessed a resource audit before sending it to parliament. It was not just drafted and sent to be assented,” She explained.

She pointed out that the bigger plan was to ensure that persons with technical acumen studied their technical courses from the basic through to high school to the tertiary level to be able to attract jobs in high earn businesses.

“It breaks my heart that when industries set up their factories, oil rakes et-cetera in Ghana, they had to go out to bring carpenters and welders from outside Ghana because our welders and carpenters did not have advanced knowledge in the very technical aspects of their work,” she stated.

She said the country was fashioning itself to model the German system where technical skills constituted the mainstay of their economies.

She told host Kojo Marfo, “If you go to Germany, the mainstay of their economy is their technical skill. Importing tables will just employ persons transporting it but manufacturing it will involve a whole chain of processes that will employ several others.”

She indicated that the NDC will continue its technical education program which saw an upgrade of some 13-second cycle technical schools; build the capacities of technical education teachers, equip technical labs and provide all the resources that the technical schools will need to realize their full functionalities.

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has extended an invitation to Ghana National Petroleum Drivers Tanker Union for a meeting to deliberate on the grievances which have been outlined by the Union.

This invitation comes after the Union called for the termination of the appointment of the Chief Executive of National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Hassan Tampuli.

The Union said Hassan Tampuli has failed to address their grievances which include the approval of 86 gas filling stations that have secured permits, seizure of police harassment sanctioned by Unified Petroleum Price Fund (UPPF) Coordinator, Samuel Asare Bediako, and over non-compliance of 2017 transit losses and refusal of the depot operators to abide by the 20°c loading temperature.

Reacting to the demands, NPA urged the Union to use the appropriate media to seek redress for whatever concerns they may have.

Hence the invitation for a meeting to deliberate on the concerns raised by the Union.

  • Akufo-Addo will retire Mahama on December 7 – Ambassador Atta Boafo

Former President John Dramani Mahama will have no more appetite for political office after the December 7 general elections, says Ambassador Kingsley Atta Boafo.

Ghana’s Ambassador to Congo Brazaville contends that the former president will be humiliated in the upcoming polls more than what he suffered in the 2016 polls.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer in 2016 suffered what has come to be known as the worst electoral defeat suffered by a flagbearer in the country’s election history.

Then candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo beat the incumbent president by a whopping margin in excess of one million votes.

Ambassador Boafo expressed optimism in an interview with this reporter stated that the good works of President Akufo-Addo will hand him a handsome victory in the polls.

He stressed that the defeat awaiting the NDC torchbearer will be humiliating that he will not have the taste of occupying the highest office of the land even if it is offered for free to him.

“They say 2016 was humiliating for ex-President Mahama and the NDC, but I forsee a higher scale of humiliation in the next election for them,” the former Member of Parliament ( MP) for Fomena underscored.

That imminent defeat he accentuated will finally retire former president Mahama from the country’s Frontline politics even at his comparatively tender age.

His Excellency Atta Boafo is confident that electorates will remember the implementation of free Senior high school policy when they go to the polls in 48 days time.

Also, planting for food and jobs, restoration of nurses and teacher trainee allowances will be on the lips of voters in voting day.

Additionally, the voting public will not forget about the strong economic foundation laid down by the government awaiting for a take off in 2021.

“Ghanaians will not derail the gains we have made so far by voting back former President Mahama into office, a move that will shatter progress made so far” Ambassador Atta Boafo confidently postulated.
