  • Coronavirus: UK economy ‘might not recover until 2024’

The UK economy could take until 2024 to return to the size it was before the coronavirus lockdown, according to analysis from the EY Item Club.

The forecasters, who use a similar economic model to the Treasury, suggest unemployment will rise to 9% from 3.9%.

They also estimate the economy will shrink by 11.5% this year, worse than the 8% they predicted only a month ago.

Consumers have been more cautious than expected, they said, while low business investment will dampen growth.

As a result, they now expect the post-coronavirus economic recovery to take 18 months longer than previously forecast.

However, the Item Club says it is early days and useful data has only recently been made available.

“Unsurprisingly, without hard data, a wide range of views on the performance and outlook for the UK economy emerged,” said Mark Gregory, UK chief economist at EY.

Last week, the Bank of England’s chief economist Andy Haldane told MPs the UK economy had “clawed back” about half the fall in output it saw during the peak of the coronavirus lockdown in March and April.

There had been a V-shaped “bounceback”, he said, referring to the shape that indicates a rapid economic recovery.

Last month, Mr Haldane said the economy was “on track for a quick recovery”.

    ‘Past its low point’

However, other economists have expressed doubts about the potential for such a swift recovery in activity.

“Even though lockdown restrictions are easing, consumer caution has been much more pronounced than expected,” said Howard Archer, chief economic adviser to the EY Item Club.

“We believe that consumer confidence is one of three key factors likely to weigh on the UK economy over the rest of the year, alongside the impact of rising unemployment and low levels of business investment.

“The UK economy may be past its low point but it is looking increasingly likely that the climb back is going to be a lot longer than expected.”

The government has moved to cut taxes, support wages and offer incentives to spend in an effort to keep the economy going and encourage consumers to spend.

Earlier this month, Chancellor Rishi Sunak cut VAT on hospitality and promised to pay firms a £1,000 bonus for every staff member kept on for three months when the furlough scheme ends in October.

But he also conceded that not every job would be saved, and his £30bn package was criticised for helping certain sectors, such as restaurants and tourism, but ignoring others.

Last month, the Bank of England said it would pump an extra £100bn into the UK economy to help fight the “unprecedented” coronavirus-induced downturn.

  • North Korea’s Kim says nuclear deterrent crucial

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons guarantee its safety, state media reported Tuesday, signalling once again that it will not give up its arsenal. Kim was addressing a conference of veterans on the 67th anniversary of the 1953 armistice that ended Korean War hostilities, the official Korean Central News Agency said.

Up to three million Koreans died in the three-year conflict, in which the armistice has never been replaced with a peace treaty, leaving North and South technically still at war.

“Thanks to our reliable and effective self-defensive nuclear deterrent, there will no longer be such word as war on this land,” Kim was quoted as saying by the KCNA.

“Our national security and future will be firmly guaranteed forever,” he added.

Pyongyang insists that it needs its nuclear arsenal to deter against a possible US invasion.

It has spent decades developing it and is internationally isolated as a result, subject to multiple United Nations Security Council sanctions over its banned weapons programmes.

Inter-Korean relations have been in deep freeze for months, following the collapse of a summit in Hanoi between Kim and US President Donald Trump last year.

That nuclear negotiation foundered on what the North would be willing to give up in exchange for a loosening of sanctions.

Kim declared in December an end to moratoriums on nuclear and ballistic missile tests, and Pyongyang has repeatedly said it has no intention to continue talks unless Washington drops what it describes as “hostile” policies towards the North.

  • Legon Cities goalkeeper Fatau Dauda plans to write his autobiography

Former Black Stars number one goalie, Fatau Dauda, has expressed his desire to write a book that chronicles his struggles in life as a young footballer till he hit the limelight.

“I have gone through a lot in my career and I believe I have an inspiring story to tell the next generation of footballers.”

“One of my greatest desires is to put into writing what I have gone through as a footballer and my struggles in the national team.”

“I remember very well how I defied the advice of my mother to choose football ahead of education,” he told GNA Sports in an interview.”

“She was never happy with my decision but I was convinced with what I wanted to do so I stuck by that. I also have fond memories of how I felt I would be denied food after playing in a community match at Madina.

“My first competitive match was in a community match at Madina. I did so well to the admiration of the huge crowd there. I thought would be denied supper by my mother and to my surprise, I was served with a lot of food and meat when I got home.

“Apparently, my mother was among the crowd that watched the match and saw how I was hailed by the crowd,” Dauda told GNA Sports in an interview.

According to Dauda, the youth and the current generation of players would have a lot to learn from his story.

“But I must admit that without discipline and commitment, you cannot make it to the top.

“My first attempt in the national team was to serve as a back-up goalkeeper at training. I was never invited but rather called to step in for the second goalkeeper who was on another national assignment.

“I took the chance to prove my worth and since that, I have been getting call-ups to the national team.

“Playing for the national team is always a one-time opportunity; if you miss it you would start all over again,” he stated.

Dauda was a member of the 2008, 2015, 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad, as well as a member of the 2014 World Cup squad in Brazil.

  • Hearts of Oak have invested in a quality striker – Nkoranza Warriors president

Nkoranza Warriors president, Leslie Kuku Bartels has disclosed that Hearts of Oak have invested in a quality striker after signing Isaac Mensah.

The 17-year-old penned a three-year deal with the Phobians after the Division One side reached an agreement with Hearts to enable the lad to join them during the 2020/21 season.

In an interview with Graphic Sports, Bartels said Mensah joined his club from Royal Sporting Club, a Division Two side in Konongo, in December 2019 as the club fought for a premiership slot.

“We needed a striker to fill the gap left behind after Kwame Opoku was transferred to Kotoko. Isaac Mensah has been promising since joining us and he made an impact in the club, scoring eight goals out of 11 games before the season was suspended.

“I have the eyes to scout for quality strikers as a football person and bringing the chap to the club has been fruitful,” he noted.

“My interest in the player grew after we had a vacant position in the striking department of Nkoranza Warriors and I had to contact Royal Sporting Club for his services. And he has proved to be good with much hope since joining us,” he further revealed.

He scored eight goals in the suspended Division One League and holds the record of scoring four goals in a game against Yendi Gbewaa.

Hearts of Oak have already signed Nigerien midfielder Abdourahamae Mamane Lawali, Abednego Tetteh, and striker Danjuma Ademola Kuti from Nigeria ahead of next season.

The female U-17 team were on the verge of qualifying for the World Cup before the outbreak of COVID-19 in Ghana.

Having brushed aside Liberia in the second round of qualifiers, the team booked a date with Nigeria in the final round of qualifiers before the lockdown.

“I am so happy and glad that the President has given us the greenlight to start camping towards our last hurdle,” Baba Nuhu told the GFA’s communication team.

  • Lynching of 90-year-old woman has disfigured our nation Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has urged police to quickly bring closure to investigations into the lynching of a 90-year-old woman at Kafaba in the Savannah Region.

He said the killing has “disfigured the face of our nation.”

The elderly woman, Akua Denteh, had been accused of witchcraft by a soothsayer who is wanted by police, alongside two others.

“I hope that the quick response of the police will lead to the rapid administration of justice in this unfortunate matter,” President Akufo-Addo said.

He also offered some financial support to advocacy efforts in the wake of the killing.

“I will make an appropriate contribution to the Akua Denteh Foundation to express my own revulsion at the awful, tragic act that has occurred in this region.”

Experts from the National Police headquarters have been deployed to the Savannah Region to hunt down the perpetrators of the incident.

Questions have been asked of the chief of the community, under the Gonja Kingdom, who is alleged to have enabled the soothsayer.

The son of the 90-year-old woman, Dominic Saaka Mahama, has called on the chief of the community to produce the perpetrators of the killing.

He feels the traditional leader had prior knowledge of the activities of the soothsayer who labelled the deceased a witch.

“If the chief is failing to provide the perpetrators, then it means that he brought them because nobody can come to your community and be doing things without your knowledge. At least the fellow will seek your approval,” he argued.

The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Tuntumba Bore Essa, also urged his people to aid police investigations “to assist the kingdom and the security agencies to identify the culprits and bring them to book”.

  • Gold hits record high as investor jitters spread

Gold hit a record high on Monday as increasing numbers of nervous investors sought a safe place to put their money.

Rising political tensions between the US and China joined the ever-present worries over the continuing coronavirus pandemic to boost the spot price to $1,944.92 an ounce,

Covid-19 cases have risen to more than 16 million globally.

Many investors shun gold as it doesn’t pay dividends or interest rates but it tends to rise in troubled times,

Interest rates are currently near zero and dividend returns from companies are uncertain at best, with so many struggling.

So far this year, gold prices have risen 28%.

A fall in the dollar is another factor that boosts the price of gold, which is quoted in the US currency. It means that buyers using other currencies can, in fact, be paying the same for their gold, as they are able to buy more dollars for their money.

In the latest development between the US and China, China took over the premises of the US consulate in the south western city of Chengdu. The move was in retaliation for the US closing down China’s diplomatic base in Houston, Texas.

This sent the dollar index to its lowest since September 2018.

The US central bank, the Federal Reserve, is meeting this week to decide on monetary policy.

Mihir Kapadia, head of Sun Global Investments, thinks that could also help boost the price further: “With eyes on the upcoming Fed policy meeting later this week and more concerns over geopolitical tensions, further gains can be expected with these factors likely to weigh heavily on the stock markets for a few more weeks to come.”

Fellow precious metal silver was also higher, it rose more than 6% to $24.36, its highest since September 2013.

  • Treasury bill rates for June 2020 decline to 14.0 percent – BoG

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has said the 91-day Treasury bill rate for the month of June 2020 has declined to about 14.0 percent from the 14.8 percent recorded a year ago in 2019.

According to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addision, the interest rate on the 182-day instrument also declined to 14.1 percent from 15.2 percent for the period.

Speaking at the 95th meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee of the central bank on Monday July 26, Dr Addison said; “Rates on the 2-year, 3-year and 5-year instruments decreased marginally to 18.8 percent, 18.9 percent, and 19.3 percent respectively, from 19.8 percent, 19.7 percent, and 19.8 percent.”

He added; “Yields on the 6-year, 7-year, 10-year, and 15-year bonds remained unchanged at 21.0 percent, 16.3 percent, 19.8 percent, and 19.8 percent, respectively. Yield on the 20-year instrument has moved up from 20.3 percent from September 2019 to 21.5 percent in June 2020”

The Governor also noted, interest rates on the money market reflected downward trends at the short end and mixed trends at the medium to long-term segments of the market.

Treasury bills on the other hand, are risk-free investment that entail short-term loans that are guaranteed by the government and used to finance various of its operations. It also offers a benchmark for determining the value of any investment and is cited as one of the most secure and popular investment options in Ghana.

The maturity of treasury bills spans through a 91-day and a 365-day period with each of them offering different returns on investments.

For the central bank’s meeting, the Monetary Policy Committee maintained the policy rate at 14.5 percent, citing the need for macroeconomic stability amid the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

“The Committee was of the view that the current extraordinary circumstances, with a widened budget deficit and a residual financing gap, would require some monetary restraint to preserve the anchors of macroeconomic stability. In the circumstances, the Committee decided to maintain the policy rate at 14.5 percent,” the Governor explained.

  • Coronavirus ‘most severe health emergency’ WHO has faced

Covid-19 is easily the most severe global health emergency ever declared by the World Health Organization (WHO), its leader has said.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he would reconvene the WHO’s emergency committee this week for a review.

There have been five other global health emergencies: Ebola (two outbreaks), Zika, polio and swine flu.

More than 16m cases of Covid-19 have been reported since January, and more than 650,000 deaths.

“When I declared a public health emergency of international concern on 30 January… there were less than 100 cases outside of China, and no deaths,” Dr Tedros said.

“Covid-19 has changed our world. It has brought people, communities and nations together, and driven them apart.”

The total number of cases, he added, had roughly doubled in the past six weeks.

Although the world had made a huge effort in fighting the virus, there remained “a long hard road ahead of us”, he said.

    In other developments:

US President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, Robert O’Brien, has tested positive for coronavirus. He is the highest-ranking official in the administration known to have tested positive

Spain insists recent outbreaks of new cases were isolated and the country is safe for tourists to visit, after the UK introduced new measures requiring visitors from Spain to quarantine for 14 days

Vietnam has closed the coastal city of Da Nang to tourists, after 15 new locally transmitted coronavirus cases were recorded there – the first in the country since April

US biotech company Moderna has begun the final phase of clinical trials for a potential Covid-19 vaccine. Some 30,000 volunteers are taking part in the third and last phase of testing before the vaccine can be submitted to a regulatory authority for evaluation and possible approval

Belgium is tightening restrictions to try to avoid another lockdown because of a worrying rise in the number of its cases. From Wednesday, Belgians will be allowed to see a maximum of five people outside of their families. Currently a Belgian individual can meet 15 people in a “social bubble”

At Monday’s briefing in Geneva, Switzerland, the WHO also said travel restrictions could not be the answer for the long term, and countries had to do more to halt the spread by adopting proven strategies such as social distancing and wearing masks.

“It is going to be almost impossible for individual countries to keep their borders shut for the foreseeable future. Economies have to open up, people have to work, trade has to resume,” WHO emergencies programme director Mike Ryan said.

WHO officials acknowledged however that further lockdowns in countries experiencing renewed outbreaks may be necessary, but suggested they should be as short as possible, and confined to as small a geographic area as possible (ie local lockdowns).

“The more we understand about the virus, the more surgical we can be in controlling it,” said Mr Ryan.

  • Republicans introduce $1tn pandemic recovery plan

Republicans have proposed spending an additional $1tn (£776bn) to address the economic damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The plan includes $100bn for schools and issuing stimulus payments of up to $1,200 to most Americans.

Under the plan, the payment would replace a $600 boost to unemployment benefits during the pandemic.

The proposal sets the stage for negotiations with Democrats who have called it “totally inadequate”.

The US has already spent more than $2.4tn on virus relief measures, sending billions of dollars in aid to businesses and individual households. But economists have warned since the spring that more would be necessary.

Senator Mitch McConnell said Republicans wanted to see how existing programmes were working, but had now produced a “tailored and targeted draft” to address the economic fallout of the pandemic.

The proposal would reduce the $600 weekly unemployment benefit supplement to $200 until states can set up a more targeted system that replaces 70% of a person’s previous wage.

The reduction reflects worries that the current benefits discourage workers from returning to work, since an estimated two thirds of recipients are getting more from unemployment than they did working.

Mr McConnell said Republicans “want to continue” the unemployment supplement, which expires this week. “But we have to do it in a way that does not slow down reopening.”

As well as money for direct payments to families and to help schools, Republicans said they want to put in place legislation to shield businesses from workers’ coronavirus health claims.

    What else do Democrats want?

Senator Chuck Schumer, who leads Democrats in the Senate, said the proposal was “too little, too late”.

The US has lost roughly 15 million jobs since February and the recovery remains on shaky ground as virus cases rise and some places reimpose restrictions.

Nearly one in five US workers is collecting unemployment benefits and more than half of adults live in households that have seen a drop in income, according to a survey by the US census.

“This is a serious, serious crisis,” Mr Schumer said. “We’re running out of time.”

He said the Republican plan amounted to a “30% pay cut” at a time when most workers do not have jobs to return to and switching to a new system will be near “impossible” for states to execute. He pointed to problems that have plagued the programme so far.

“It will delay benefits for weeks, if not months, as we slide into a greater degree of recession,” he said.

Democrats, who have put forward their own $3tn plan, want funding for local governments, which are facing budget shortfalls due to the decline in economic activity. Many object to the unemployment benefit cut, which they want to see extended through to the end of the year.

They have also rejected the proposal to shield businesses from liability.

“What we will not support is what they’re saying to essential workers: ‘You have to go to work because you’re essential, we place no responsibility on your employer to make that workplace safe and if you get sick you have no recourse because we’ve given your employer protection,’” Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, said in a recent television interview.

    What happens now?

Some Republicans had proposed fast-tracking some pieces of the legislation – an idea rejected by Democrats, who see that strategy as an effort to avoid including their priorities.

Mr McConnell said on Friday he expected the negotiations to take “a few weeks”. The senator will also need to persuade members of his own party, who are worried about rising levels of government debt and opposed to further spending.

“The answer to these challenges will not simply be shovelling cash out of Washington. The answer to these challenges will be getting people back to work,” Republican Senator Ted Cruz said.

  • Robert O’Brien, key Trump adviser, tests positive for coronavirus

President Donald Trump‘s national security adviser, Robert O’Brien, has tested positive for coronavirus, the White House has confirmed.

Mr O’Brien, 54, has been self-isolating and working from home.

The aide has mild symptoms and there was no risk of exposure to Mr Trump or Vice-President Mike Pence, a statement said.

Mr O’Brien is the highest-ranking official in Mr Trump’s administration known to have tested positive.

It is not clear when he and the president last met, but one administration official said it had not been for “several days”. The pair appeared together two weeks ago on a trip to Miami.

The White House statement read: “He has mild symptoms and has been self-isolating and working from a secure location off site. There is no risk of exposure to the president or the vice-president. The work of the National Security Council continues uninterrupted.”

Some staff members told CNN they had only learned of the infection on Monday from the media.

One source told Bloomberg that Mr O’Brien had been out of his office for a week and that the adviser had contracted the virus after a family event.

Anyone near the president is tested regularly for COVID-19.

A number of people in and around the administration have tested positive, including a military member who works as a White House valet, Mr Pence’s press secretary Katie Miller, and a helicopter squadron Marine.

    Who is Robert O’Brien?

Trained as a lawyer, he has had a long diplomatic career working for both Republicans and Democrats. He is believed to be the highest-ranking Mormon member of the Trump administration.

He was picked to replace John Bolton as national security adviser last September, after Mr Bolton left amid a rancorous fallout with President Trump.

Mr O’Brien shares similar views to Mr Trump on a number of issues, including criticism of the UN and opposition to the Iran nuclear deal.

Mr O’Brien traveled to Paris this month to discuss foreign policy issues with European counterparts, and gave a speech in Arizona in June comparing Chinese President Xi Jinping with Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

  • Dr Prince Pamboe outlines coronavirus safety measures for national teams

CAF medical officer, Dr Prince Pamboe has outlined some measures that must be put in place as the junior national teams have been given the green light to resume training ahead of their respective qualifiers in September.

President Nana Akufo-Addo in his address on measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus eased restrictions on football activities starting with the Black Princesses, Maidens and the Black Starlets as they begin camping ahead of their various competitions.

Speaking in an interview on Wamputu Sports on Happy 98.9FM, Dr Prince Pamboe indicated CAF has given all its member Associations guidelines on how to restart football activities amid the pandemic.

He stated that the guidelines though not compulsory can also help in ensuring the players and technical team members are safe in camp as they are set to begin preparations in a few weeks.

He outlined some measures which must be put in place by government and the Ghana Football Association before the players are called to camp.

“All the players must be tested before they begin camping. An isolation center must be created in camp so that when a player is infected they can be quarantined and possibly treated.

“An ambulance must also be made available at the camp whilst all players must have a room to themselves. Two buses must be provided for the team so that proper social distancing can be done”, Dr Pamboe said in the interview.

  • When Kevin-Prince Boateng lost control of his life at Tottenham

Kevin-Prince Boateng once made it clear what went wrong in his one and a half years at Tottenham Hotspur: “I hardly played and had no drive to train in the morning. I was caught up in lethargy. Nightclubs and parties were more important than football” he told the English newspaper in 2010 when he was playing at Portsmouth FC.

There he had prevailed in the Premier League and became a Ghanaian international. His first engagement in England , that of Tottenham, turned into a nightmare.

“I went to the Spurs at the age of 20 and immediately got a huge damper,” looked back Boateng, who switched from Hertha BSC to London in summer 2007 for just under eight million euros . “After a lot of preparation, Martin Jol (Tottenham coach at the time) told me that while I was a good guy and was under contract, he didn’t want me at all.”

Kevin-Prince Boateng: “I was all alone in this huge city”That must have been sitting. Especially since he didn’t really want to go to England, as he later revealed: “I would have preferred Spain , but at Hertha people advised me to go to England.” The FC Sevilla was then also him off, said Boateng in 2019 in an interview with Goal and DAZN .

But it became Tottenham – and it became bitter. “I was all alone in this huge city of London, it was depressing,” he said. He did not get a move in the first few weeks and was only allowed to play in the Premier League for the first time on matchday 12 of the 2007/08 season. In the middle of the season he had a decent phase, but from the beginning of March to the end of the season nothing worked again.

Boateng set wrong priorities, as he admits. “It was important to me to wear the coolest clothes and to be known in the night clubs. I was completely on the wrong track.” The lack of playing time frustrated him more and more, just as the sweet life overwhelmed him with the financial opportunities of a football professional.

Kevin-Prince Boateng bought three cars in one day “Once I bought three cars in one day,” says the 33-year-old midfielder. Boateng bought a Lamborghini, a Hummer and a Cadillac classic car, “for a high six-figure sum. I also have 2000 baseball caps from that time, 20 leather jackets and 160 pairs of shoes. My frustration was expressed in massive attacks of shopping addiction. ”

Because he had no one on site to talk to, who could have slowed him down, Boateng couldn’t get out of that downward spiral. “I would have needed someone to advise me on sporting and financial matters, to wake me up, but there was nobody there,” he says. Sometimes he spent “huge sums of money” on a celebration night. “But that didn’t make me happy. I was a broken man who lived in his own world.”

Although he still had 13 Premier League appearances in his first season with the Spurs, he only had a meager 14 minutes in the first half of his second season. He pulled the emergency brake and was loaned to Borussia Dortmund in early 2009 . And there, at BVB, he gets the curve, has in Jürgen Klopp the sponsor that he has always lacked at Tottenham. “He knows exactly what he has to say so that you can go out on the pitch and die for him. He’s ahead of everyone else,” said Boateng to Goal and DAZN about today’s Liverpool coach. “I would even go to China for Klopp .”

Kevin-Prince Boateng learned from Tottenham: “Just shit for a year, but …”In summer 2009 he had to go back to Tottenham, but then went to Portsmouth and came to AC Milan after Genoa in 2010 after the successful World Cup with Ghana , where he played with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ronaldinho, Andrea Pirlo and Robinho. He became an Italian champion and later played for Schalke, Frankfurt, Barcelona,Florence and Besiktas .

Boateng has had a great career. One that also included the dark time at Tottenham back then. “If I hadn’t gone to Tottenham, I wouldn’t have been the player I am today,” he said. “I only made shit there for a year, but in retrospect it helped me. I learned what it means to be a professional football player and how to eat properly. I realized that you should stay at home when everyone is move around the houses at night. ”

  • NDC will unlock funds in collapsed financial institutions in a year – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) upon assumption of office, would pay all locked up funds in collapsed financial institution within a year.

“We shall pay within one year all who have funds locked up with the collapsed financial institutions,” the NDC flagbearer, said.

He told the top brass of the NDC and dignitaries that the party shall not put up any long-term payment plans that would further worsen the living conditions of the victims.

Mr Mahama was speaking at the outdooring ceremony of his running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, in Accra.

He said, as introduced in other economies, the next NDC Administration would establish a Financial Services Authority that would be responsible for ensuring that consumer financial markets worked for consumers, providers and the economy as a whole.

He said the Authority would oversee all financial products and services offered to consumers and would effectively and efficiently prevent and stop the challenges that had confronted customers of Menzgold and DKM among others.

“We will restore Ghanaian indigenous investment in the banking and financial sector through a tiered banking structure in order to restore viable credit sources for Ghanaian SMEs,” he added.

The Presidential Candidate said the party would make amends for those whose businesses had collapsed due to political victimization.

“We will make immediate arrangements to pay contractors whose hard-earned monies have been deliberately withheld by the Nana Addo administration due to politics,” he said.

He said the NDC’s economic plans included an aggressive job and entrepreneurial programme in the public and private sector that would deliver “a minimum 250,000 jobs every year, a total of 1,000,000 jobs across the country by the end of my term in office in 2024.”

“We will put Ghanaians to work to earn a decent living,” Mr Mahama said.

  • Fox steals over 100 shoes in Berlin, Germany

Residents in one Berlin neighborhood were bemused when their shoes began vanishing. The prolific shoe thief turned out to be a fashion-conscious fox with a passion for footwear.

A fox has stolen around 100 shoes from people’s homes in Berlin’s southwestern Zehlendorf neighborhood, according to local media reports.

All types of footwear had started disappearing from outside homes in the district, including slippers and sandals as well as sneakers, before the unlikely thief was unmasked by local resident Christian Meyer.

Meyer initially noticed his running shoes had disappeared and posted an inquiry on Germany’s community noticeboard-sharing platform Nebenan.de, reported Berlin newspaper Tagesspiegel.

After posting, it became apparent that his were not the only shoes to have vanished in the area.

Meyer later spotted the fox on a patch of wasteland in the district and managed to snap a picture of the creature “caught red-handed with a pair of blue flip flops in his mouth.”

Meyer also uncovered the fox’s haul of multicolored footwear.

Sadly, Meyer has yet to find his lost running shoes, but three other pairs have been successfully reclaimed by their owners.

  • The world’s hopes for a coronavirus vaccine may run in these health care workers’ veins

In the corner of a COVID-19 ward in Sao Paulo, Brazil, a woman cleaning the mouth of an intubated patient carries an extraordinary hope for pretty much all of us. Slipping a mouthwash-soaked brush into an elderly woman’s mouth, at great personal daily risk, dentist Denise Abranches has something more than courage in her veins.

Abranches was the first of an expected 5,000 Brazilian key workers in the healthcare system to receive a trial coronavirus vaccine from Oxford University and multinational drugmaker AstraZeneca, along with volunteers in the UK and South Africa.

Across the city, frontline medics like her have enrolled in a Phase 3 test of the vaccine’s efficacy as they battle the pandemic, which has infected more than 2 million Brazilians. And it isn’t just Oxford testing its vaccine in this vast human petri dish. Chinese firm Sinovac began trials last week in Sao Paulo, and US pharma giant Pfizer plans to do so soon, bringing a race among powers to prove their vaccine works first.

Yet while nations fret over securing access to a vaccine, the potential geopolitical implications mean nothing in this ward. “To volunteer is an act of love, to donate a little of yourself to people,” said Abranches. Like many healthcare workers, she has been separated from her family for months of Brazil’s pandemic, in order to avoid spreading the virus, and often failed to hold back her tears when asked about the loved ones she missed.

“The loneliness is greater of the patients who are suffering,” she said, as if to check her own solitude. “Being here for the whole period, seeing patients die — often without saying goodbye to their families — that moved us all here. I largely wanted to help, and the vaccine trial needs people like us, at high risk of contamination.”

As a dentist at Hospital Sao Paulo, her days are spent immersed in infected saliva, which puts her among the highest-risk subjects that the trial could have chosen when she was injected in late June. Many others in her ward have also enrolled in this globally vital trial.

As we tour their daily routine of life-saving procedures — a tracheotomy and extubation in just 30 minutes — more staff reveal they’ve had the jab, and endure the routine checks and testing that follow. One is going to receive the trial vaccine this week. Another is thinking about it. Their boss, Professor Flavia Machado, said she is about the thousandth recipient.
Safety procedures on the ward remain strict. They don’t know yet if the vaccine works. And because it is a double blind trial, none knows whether they’ve had the vaccine, or a placebo.

    Developing vaccines at “warp speed”
So it is that after five months of mitigating the suffering of one of the world’s worst-hit cities, the medical workers of São Paulo are now asked to help bring hope to the rest of the world.

Scientists have toiled to create a vaccine in record time, with the Trump White House even naming its vaccine Operation Warp Speed as it sinks $1.9 billion into the Pfizer project. But after severe lockdowns reduced the virus’s spread in Europe, Western researchers looked further afield for heavily infected populations in which to test the vaccine.

In Brazil, the virus is rampant. President Jair Bolsonaro has been dismissive of the threat, even though he contracted it himself. The country reported over 50,000 new COVID-19 cases on several days last week. Officials here have sought opportunity in the misfortune and allowed British, Chinese and US firms to run trials in hopes that Brazil may get faster local production of the eventual vaccine. The faster the population is immunized, the sooner the economy will be able to restart.

Sinovac’s trial began last week with now a handful of recipients in the São Paulo healthcare system. Yet an unexpected side effect has emerged — not of the vaccine but the geopolitical race for it. A small fringe of angry Brazilians have railed on social media against the “China vaccine.” They’re echoing the earlier rhetoric, critics say, of Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and the Trump administration about the “Chinese virus.”

Sao Paulo State Governor Joao Doria displays a box of the COVID-19 vaccine produced by the Chinese company Sinovac Biotech at the Hospital das Clinicas (HC) in Sao Paulo State on July 21, 2020.

“God help me not to take the vaccine made by those who made the virus! #nothanks #chinesevaccineNO” reads one Twitter user’s post in Portuguese about the Sinovac vaccine. “My friends, do not allow yourself to be GUINEA PIG of CHINESE DICTATORSHIP and Doria (expletive),” reads another, referring to Sao Paulo governor Joao Doria, with the same #chinesevaccineNO hashtag.

As a result, the Sinovac project has recommended that their contributors hide their identities. “This is the number one concern,” said leading epidemiologist and head of the Sinovac trial, Dr Esper Kallas. “Some people may react oddly in these days to a volunteer who participated in a vaccine that was conceptualized in a Chinese company.”

Kallas added that he does not see the vaccine alternatives as Chinese or British or American. “These are mankind vaccines,” he said. “We need to have them available to fight this pandemic all over the world. And perhaps the ultimate solution is not going to be one vaccine, but a combination of them.”

Only one participant in the Sinovac trial has spoken publicly so far, Stephanie Texieira Porto. A young doctor, she too has been separated from family for the past five months, and her eyes mist when she mentions her 90-year-old grandmother whom she’s not seen.

She says she has only received kind words about her decision to participate in the Sinovac trial on social media, but was warned by the trial organizers that it could be different. “They told me to not expose myself too much, to try to not tell everybody how this study will be. It’s very strange, all of it. I don’t understand why [some people] hate China.”

She is reticent to discuss the role Bolsonaro and his supporters have played in fomenting anti-Chinese rhetoric. “Our president, everything he says is important and the population believes him. He says … that it’s the flu. He’s said bad things about China. I prefer not to talk about him.”

If successful, the two vaccine trials already underway should bring mass-produced vaccines to Brazil faster. AstraZeneca has agreed to let Brazil’s Fiocruz center make the vaccine locally, producing bulk quantities even before the trial ends, and Sinovac has agreed to share its technology with Brazilian partners. Brazil’s interim health minister recently expressed interest in buying doses of the drug that Pfizer is developing, too, though it has yet to begin trialing the drug in São Paulo. The company did not return a request for comment.

For Kallas, talk of a race between nations and companies is a fruitless distraction to the global task at hand. “This is a threat to all of us and finding collectively a solution is the only way to go.”

Porto agreed. World powers may “feel they are in a race, but it is a common effort so humanity go back to our lives again.”

  • Ed Sheeran: ‘I’d binge eat until I was sick’

Ed Sheeran has revealed how his “very addictive personality” led him to binge on food and alcohol during the early days of his success.

Speaking at an online summit on anxiety and wellbeing, the star said he had suffered panic attacks and hated the way he looked after becoming famous.

He hit a particularly rough patch during his 2014-15 world tour.

“I felt, ‘What was the point?’ In a dark way, like, ‘Why am I around? What is the point?’” he said.

The star said credited his wife, Cherry, and a more healthy lifestyle for helping him turn his life around.

“She exercises a lot, so I started going on runs with her. She eats quite healthily so I started eating quite healthily. She doesn’t drink that much so I wasn’t drinking,” he said. “I think that all changed things.”

In a wide-ranging interview with documentary maker James Sebastiano, Jr, Sheeran also explained his current hiatus from music, and why he has taken up painting.

    How touring affected his health

Sheeran said the 180-date world tour to promote his 2014 album X, was his lowest point.

“I would stay up and drink all night and then sleep on the bus,” he said. “The buses would park underneath the arenas and I’d sleep on the bus all day and then wake up and then come out, do the show, drink, get back on the bus and I didn’t see sunlight for maybe four months.

“It’s all fun and games at the start. it’s all rock and roll, and then like it starts getting sad. That was probably like the lowest that I’ve been and I kind of ballooned in weight.”

On his addictive personality “I’m covered in in tattoos and I don’t do things by half,” the star admitted, “so if I’m gonna drink… I see no point in having a glass of wine. I’d rather have two bottles”.

“Having a glass of wine is having something in moderation and probably isn’t going to affect your day the next day. But two bottles of wine probably might make you quite sad.”

But alcohol wasn’t the only problem.

“They used to call me two-dinner Teddy because I used to order two meals and eat that,” he said. “Then you start putting on loads of weight and hating the way you look.

“I think things like sugar, sweet stuff, junk food, cocaine, alcohol, it feels good the more you do, but it’s the worst thing for you.”

How Elton John delivered a few home truths Sheeran was signed to Elton John’s management company at the start of his career – and he said that reading his mentor’s autobiography had prompted a few realisations about his own lifestyle.

“There are so many things that he did that I do,” the star explained.

“He would be like, ‘I would just go on an ice cream binge and eat four desserts until I threw up’, and I was like, ‘I’ve done that before’.

“Or his martini binges, where he sees how many martinis he can drink. And I’m like, ‘I’ve done that before too’.

“With addiction, its very hard to moderate but moderation is the key.”

Taking a break from music Sheeran had a number one album last year, with his No. 6 Collaborations Project, but he indicated he’d be stepping back from music for the rest of 2020.

“You can sense when the public are like, ‘We’ve had enough now,’” he said of the album’s reception. “One of the important things in the industry is to know when not only to give yourself a break, but to give the public a break.”

In the meantime, he’s taken up art.

“I was like, ‘I should probably try and find something else to give me happiness,’” he explained. “There’s only so many movies you can watch and packets of Monster Munch you can eat.

“So I basically bought 30 canvases and I painted a canvas a day for 30 days and it was really fun.”

He said his creations were in the style of abstract impressionist Jackson Pollock – “I just bought house paint and then I would just layer it up by flicking it” – but the public would never get to see them.

“I don’t sell my art. I just love doing it. No one else needs to judge.”

On the perils of fame – and how people ‘stole’ his money One of the star’s more surprising admissions was that he felt very little sense of achievement after his record-breaking run of shows at Wembley Stadium in 2015.

“It sounds weird saying it but you don’t really feel anything,” he said. “You’d think it would be like, ‘A-ha! This is it. I’ve made it. Oh my God!’ [but] you finish it and you’re like… ‘Well, what do I do now?’”

The star says he cherished the early days of his career, playing open mic nights and sleeping on friends’ sofas, more than the big-scale stadium shows and festivals he’s become accustomed to.

“I started at the bottom and I loved every part of it,” he said. “I learned more playing in a room to one person in Exeter when no-one came to my gig in 2009 that I did playing Wembley Stadium for four nights. It’s a weird one.”

He added that fame had come at a cost.

“When you have success and you find money… you get people getting weird with you. I had family members turn weird and friends fall out with me and people stealing. It’s not the key to happiness.

“Fame is an enhancer [of] everyone else’s insecurities,” he added wearily. “The number of people I don’t speak to anymore just because it just turned weird.”

His success has also triggered panic attacks, he said, often when he’s surrounded by large groups of people.

“I would get it on the tube and planes, supermarkets… It’s a weird paranoia in me of assuming that everyone’s going to be horrible, when usually people are nice.”

Why he no longer needs social media

Despite taking a sabbatical from releasing music, Sheeran says he’s working on new music – treating his studio sessions as a “nine to five” job, in an effort to maintain a healthy work-life balance and spend more time with his wife.

He’s also quit social media, as he did in 2016 while working on the follow-up to the multi-million selling X album.

“I was on my phone probably 19 hours of the day in 2015 and before that, just constantly just flicking, posting, flicking and posting. And it wasn’t till the tour ended in 2015 where I was like, ‘Oh I’m just gonna try and live without my phone for a bit’.

“I had 1,500 contacts on my phone and people were texting the whole time and it just felt a lot of responsibility to either reply or meet up with them.

“For the first month I felt like a massive weight had been lifted.”

After returning to social media to promote his third album, Divide, he found himself falling back into bad habits, so he announced he’d be “taking a breather” again on Christmas Eve 2019.

He now says he’s “of an age where I’m beyond” needing to be on social media.

“I don’t think I’m going to get the youth [audience] back – because I’m getting into my 30s,” he explained. “It’s not like 16-year-old people are going to relate to me next time I release an album. So it’s not like I need to be on it any more. I can just have someone post it [for me].”

  • Regulatory agency must help private sector with reliefs to combat coronavirus

Regulatory agencies must work hand in hand with the private sector to cushion businesses as the Coronavirus pandemic continue to bite hard, Hilton John Mitchell, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Jonmoore International, a logistics services provider, has said.

“The private sector is currently encountering tough time, and so these statutory bodies that regulate activities in the private sector should be transparent so that the challenges posed to business entities and disruptions to commercial transactions in the wake of the pandemic, will be substantiality mitigated,” he said.

He applauded government for its timely intervention for making available some fund for disbursement to local entities through the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI).

He explained that the provision of temporaary relief to companies and individuals to alleviate the adverse financial impact of a slowdown in economic activities, particularly in the area of payment of certificate or permit renewal, and others would be welcome.

“If we come back next year to renew our permits with the regulatory institutions or statutory institutions, they should understand that we have gone through tough times,” Mr. Mitchell told the B&FT in an interview.

He called for continuous support for the sector, as employers have to continue to pay employees salary, medical bills, even as the pandemic continue to ravage the economy.

“Private sector is tough and all the support that should be giving to us, should be giving to us. We have people on our pay roll and medical insurance covering them. When we come and knock on the door of statutory and regulatory institutions, it is not because we want anything free, but because of the reality that we are facing,” he emphasised.

Jonmoore International Limited is a multiple award winning Ghanaian transport and logistics service provider in Ghana and Africa for over two decades of experience.

  • Coronavirus: Non-Life Gross Premium hits GH¢515 million in 2020 first quarter

In spite of the COVID-19 and subsequent lockdown of activities non-life insurers performance during the period in relation to income, generation was encouraging for this period under review.

The 29 non-life companies generated total gross premium income of GH¢515,741,117 in the first quarter of 2020 as against GH¢397,461,040 the same period in 2019. This is due to the unwavering stands of the regulator to drive insurance growth and to ensure strict compliance with relevant laws affecting insurance business.

The introduction of Motor Insurance Database (MID) by the regulator and the resilience by the companies to build on innovations not only on the product but also technology and people went a long way to improve the selling of the most popular insurance product vehicle insurance in the country whereby insurers and their clients will sit at the comfort of their homes to buy insurance.

All the non-life companies grew their first-quarter gross premium income marginally against what they did in the same period in 2019.

  • Insurance policyholders urged to report insurance claims on time

Mr. Ernest Frimpong, the Managing Director of Loyalty Insurance Company Limited, has made a call to insurance policyholders/insureds/claimants to report accidents or insurance claims to insurance companies on time to speed up investigations, processing, settlement and payment of insurance claims in a fair and prompt manner.

Mr. Frimpong indicated that the delay in reporting insured incidents to insurance companies is one of the reasons payment of insurance claims sometimes delay. He indicated that in recent times, some insurance companies, including Loyalty Insurance, have made claims payment a marketing tool and therefore would do whatever is within their capacity to pay claims in a swift manner.

Mr. Frimpong pointed out that as part of the general conditions of insurance policies, insureds or claimants are required to give notice in writing to the insurance company immediately an event giving rise to a claim occurs. Even before a formal written communication to the insurance company, a notice of the unfortunate insured incident can be reported to the insurance by either a phone call or email.

Regarding Motor Insurance, in the event of an accident, the insured must immediately forward to the insurance company full details of the accident in writing and any communication or court documents received by the insured. Insureds should desist from taking unilateral decisions on fixing their vehicles or engaging negligent third parties without the involvement of their insurance company.

Insureds may present an estimate(s) from their preferred garage(s) but, they should allow their insurance companies to seek a second opinion on the estimate(s). This speeds up the claims settlement and payment process.

Insureds should, therefore, desist from authorizing repairs without the involvement and approval of their insurance company. Insureds should also endeavour to make the accident vehicle available for inspection by the insurance company.

Claimants are also required to notify the Police as soon as possible of all accidents, including thefts of or malicious damage to their insured vehicle.

Mr. Frimpong disclosed to the B&FT that Loyalty Insurance, for example, will do whatever is within its power to delight its clients and remain a loyal partner at all times, bearing in mind that each contact with an insured is an opportunity to improve the confidence and trust in Loyalty Insurance and the Insurance Industry as a whole.

He further stated that the settlement and payment of claims is one of the ways to meet and even exceed the expectations of the clients of insurance companies.

This posture by insurance companies is very important because the ability of an insurance company to meet its financial obligations as and when they fall due speaks volumes of its financial strength, solvency, and operational efficiency and viability.

  • ‘Improved Technical Capacity positions Ghana’s MICE industry

Mr Kojo Poku, the Vice President of the Events and Meeting Professionals Association of Ghana (EMPAG), says the nation’s improved technical capacity for business events, has set the industry on the right path for growth.

The technical capacity for business events is also known in the tourism industry as ‘Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions/Events (MICE)’.

He said this at a webinar session organised as part of the ‘Graphic Do Ghana Travel Festival’ with support from EMPAG, says a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency by EMPAG.

The event which was organized on the theme “Think MICE, Think Business Events” brought together some key individuals within the events industry in Ghana to share key insights on their industry.

Mr Poku noted that many companies in the events industry had invested in their equipment and human resource, which led to the attraction of more conferences to Ghana and a growing interest in MICE locally.

“Over the years, investments made by companies by means of staff training, and the procurement of modern equipment has led to an improvement in the technical aspects in the organisation of our events.

“Our institutions have continuously trained people over the years and this has reflected in their work.

It is, therefore, not a coincidence that Ghana has one of the largest capacities in terms of translators, who play a critical role at many functions,” he said.

Mrs Theresa Ayoade, EMPAG President and Chief Executive Officer for Charterhouse Productions, speaking on the need for collaborations said: “Ghana is privileged to be positioned as a MICE Hub in West Africa.

However, there is the need for stronger collaborations between the private and public sector to increase the market confidence reposed in Ghana’s MICE industry by many people.

These collaborations, she explained, would go a long way to turn around the fortunes of MICE in Ghana.

On his part, Pa John Dadson, Curator of ‘Do Ghana Festival’ cited data collection to be a major setback within the tourism industry.

Many event practitioners or companies, she said, were not keen on sharing data pertaining to their businesses for a variety of reasons.

“Data collection is a difficult conversation in the tourism industry as many event practitioners and companies feel that their information would be shared with government or their competitor.

This sometimes poses challenges in the bid to get a true representation of our industry, in terms of capacity, for presentation to government and sometimes investors,” she added.

The Events and Meeting Professionals Association of Ghana (EMPAG) is a coalition of Event Management practitioners and is noted for its advocacy for protection and growth of the events management industry in Ghana.

It supported the Graphic Communications Group to host the 2nd Graphic ‘Do Ghana’ Travel Festival webinar with focus on MICE sector, the statement said.

Other supporters were; Asaase Radio, Ghana Tourism Authority, Bentsifi, Grand Arena, Roam Ghana, Oxygen and the Department of Hospitality & Tourism Management, University of Cape Coast.

  • Timelines for NLA payments reviewed due to coronavirus

The National Lottery Authority (NLA) on Saturday said the payment of winning tickets/prizes after every draw would slightly delay for a number of days due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A statement signed by the Public Relations Unit of the Authority, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said its employees currently run on shift basis as a result of the pandemic, hence validation and payments would reasonably delay.

It said in as much as the Authority was willing to satisfy the staking public, lotto discounters and the LMCs, it was equally important to take pragmatic steps to protect the lives its employees in these difficult periods of the COVID-19.

The statement, therefore, appealed to its stakeholders to cooperate with the Authority as it needed to properly investigate winning tickets/prizes before payment due to the rising activities of lotto fraudsters.

“The decision by the NLA to do due diligence, thorough investigation and validation of winning tickets will definitely affect the timelines for payment,” it said.

“From the above stated reasons, we are humbly urging the staking public, lotto discounters and LMCs to promptly register their Winning Tickets at the nearby Regional and District Offices of the NLA or the Authority’s Head Office for investigation and validation before payment.

It called on the public to cooperate with the NLA and exercise restraint “so that collectively we can transform the lottery industry.

  • Court quashes UEW Pro-VC elections, orders for immediate conduct of new elections

The Winneba high court has today July 27, 2020 quashed the November 21, 2019 Pro-VC Elections of University of Education Winneba(UEW).

The court, presided over by Winneba High court judge, Justice Aboagye Tanoh further orders for an immediate conduct of fresh elections for the Pro-VC position.

Contrary to the university’s statute, professor Afful Broni made a nomination which led to the election of Dr. Andy Ofori-Birikorang as a candidate for the Pro-VC Elections

This decision by Professor Afful Broni was however challenged in the Winneba High court thereby ordering for a re-hearing.

According to the court, Dr afful broni had no power under section 672 A and UEW statutes to nominate persons for the position of a Pro-Vice Chancellor.

A cost of GHC5000 was also awarded to the plaintiff.

Lawyer for the plaintiff and MP for Efutu constituency, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed content with the court’s hearing.

“The high Court in Winneba has held that University of Education statutes does not permit the Vice Chancellor to nominate for the purpose of election a Pro-Vice Chancellor. Accordingly the court quashed the decision of professor Aful-Broni to nominate three persons for the election. In effect the court pronounced that the Dr Afful’s decision cannot hold,” he stated.

According to him, the court ruling cleary vindictes the stance of his client, Dr Frimpong Kaakyire who is a lecturer at UEW and a former UTAG President.

    Background

Makkenzy Golightly, a juvenile trainer based in the UK has called on the current football leaders to organize more training courses for juvenile and youth coaches and plan for more competitive matches all over the country.

He said the grassroots are the foundation and they need support than the big clubs who must not depend on the GFA.

“Football in Ghana must develop from down to the top, and not from the top to down, which is a disaster” he expressed.

He noted that the colts and schools must be given more balls so that they can train well.

He stressed that the national football plan or formation must be learnt and played from the kids level to the adult level.

“We have our own system or formation called Agoro, and by this time we should have developed it and have a different vibration,” he said.

According to him, it is sad that Ghana would reach the finals of the Africa Nations Cup competition and lose at the finals, and allow Cameroun and Egypt to win more tournaments than the Black Stars.

  • Death of 90-year-old woman: Kafaga residents have a long way to go Okudzeto Ablakwa

The murder of Dente Akua a few days ago by some residents of Kafaga in the Savannah Region has sparked public outrage as many notable personalities condemn the barbaric act.

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu District, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has also condemned the killing saying the act indicates that the Kafaga community has a long way to go when it comes to civilization.

“…any society which still believes in witchcraft and blames the aged for their woes, so much so that they will heartlessly lynch a 90-year-old woman has a very long way to go…”, part of Hon. Okudzeto’s statement reads.

According to Hon. Okudzeto, he does not see any reasons why only the aged and poor such as Dente Akua in society are regarded as witches while the equally aged but rich ones are not regarded as such.

The MP continued that if Akua Dente had been that powerful to spiritually hinder development in the Kafaga community, “why she was not able to make herself rich?” he asked.

However, the MP raised some serious point of concern by pointing to some religious teachings and cultural norms as things that keep people glued to archaic and barbaric practices such as believe in witchcraft as seen in the case of Dente Akua.

He further called for justice to be served and the perpetrators apprehended and severely dealt with accordance to the laws of the country.
