  • Muntaka proposes formulation of Ethics Committee of Parliament

The debate about whether or not to haul Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, to the Privileges Committee of Parliament for firing gunshots at a voters registration centre in her constituency has aroused the need for the house to consider putting in place an Ethics Committee.

Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, who says he has little or no faith in the Privileges Committee to do the needful says he has tabled a proposal before the leadership of the house to consider adopting the Ethics Committee to deal with matters that bring the name of the house into disrepute decisively.

Mavis Hawa Koomson who also doubles as Minister for Special Development Initiatives admitted to firing a gun at the Step to Christ registration centre in Kasoa during a voter registration exercise on Monday, 20 July 2020 but says it was in self-defence.

The action which has brought to question her reputation as a Member of Parliament and a Minister of State for that matter has seen sections of the public calling for her arrest and dismissal by the President.

On Tuesday, 21 July 2020 while addressing the press in Parliament, MP for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak called for the hauling of the MP cum Minister before the Privileges Committee.

In his view “She [Hawa Komson] brought the name of Parliament into disrepute, she’s embarrassed Parliament and I think Parliament has the unique opportunity, a very unique opportunity to do the needful, a very unique opportunity to restore public confidence in this great institution of Parliament by hauling her to the Privileges Committee for embarrassing the honourable house of Parliament.”

But his colleague MP for Asawase and Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, holds a contrary view.

Mr Mubarak says his faith in the Privileges Committee is dwindling noting that the committee has failed to crack the whip on members in some events past.

“Me I doubt whether the Privileges Committee will act. We’ve seen so many things in this house that the Privileges Committee fails to act…I don’t know why we do that to ourselves,” he said.

As the leadership of the house reviews its standing orders, Mr Muntaka says he is hopeful the house will adopt his proposal for the formulation of Ethics Committee as he asserts “because of that in the new standing orders, I’m calling for Ethics Committee and graciously I’ve seen that it’s been proposed that we have an Ethics Committee because ethics will take it more broadly than just the privileges.”

  • Banking clean up will benefit economy post Coronavirus – EIU

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has hailed government’s industrialisation drive under its flagship One District One Factory intiative, as well as the banking sector clean up.

In the EIU’s latest country report on Ghana in which it partly analysed the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on the Ghanaian economy and the way forward, the EIU said the industrialisation drive by the Akufo-Addo government and the banking sector clean up the government boldly undertook, will contribute immensely to the strengthening of the Ghanaian economy, which has been hit by the effects of the pandemic, just as other countries in the world.

“With key revenue targets plummeting, including a sharp drop in oil revenue, the EIU noted that the industrialisation drive and the banking clean up will help in non oil growth.

“The government’s industrialisation push and moves to strengthen the banking sector will benefit non-oil economic growth, although the cost of capital will remain a constraint,” the report noted.

The EIU further observed that progress in the government’s quest for massive industrialisation has been significantly stalled by the effects of the Coronavirus, adding however, that should the Akufo-Addo be re-elected, which the EIU has predicted, then it expects the government to breath more life into its industrialisation drive as a catalyst for the strengthening of the economy.

“The NPP’s plans for more rapid industrialisation have been temporarily overshadowed by the coronavirus,” said the EIU report.

“In particular, progress on the NPP’s flagship One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative has been patchy, with results generally falling behind targets. If, as we expect, the NPP is re—elected, we believe that there will be an attempt to breathe fresh life into the initiative.”

On the general outlook of the Ghanaian economy post Coronavirus, the EIU made a positive, predicting a positive real GDP growth in 2021, a slower pace of depreciation, lower inflation among other positive forecast.

    Coronavirus impact on global economy

As it analysed the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on the Ghanaian economy, EIU also looked at the impact of the Coronavirus on global economy and its verdict is predictably dire.

“We forecast that global output will contract by 4.8% year on year in 2020 and that global trade will decline by 22.6%. Global GDP will not recover to pre-coronavirus levels before at least 2022; 2020 and 2021 will be lost years for growth.”

“Real GDP will contract in all regions of the world, but the drop in output will be especially severe in OECD countries. All G7 countries and almost all G20 countries will experience a full-year recession in 2020. We expect China’s real GDP growth to slow sharply to 1.4% this year and forecast a full-year recession in the US, with a contraction of 4.8%. We assume that oil prices will decline by more than 37% this year, to average US$40/barrel.”

“Most countries have responded with huge fiscal expansion to support businesses and households, raising the risk of sovereign debt crises in the medium term. Central banks have cut interest rates and, more importantly, have stepped up as buyers of last resort for government and corporate debt. Europe is heading towards a historic recession this year.”

  • Nana Yaw Amponsah is inexperienced for Kotoko CEO job Mallam Yahaya

The assistant coach of Karela United, Mallam Yahaya has said that Nana Yaw Amponsah is not experienced enough to work for Asante Kotoko as the Chief Executive Officer.

In the past month, the new Board of Directors of the club according to reports, has been looking for a new CEO.

With Nana Yaw Amponsah said to be the favorite to land the job, Mallam Yahaya said he is not the right man for the job.

“I have not seen nana yaw Amponsah before but I have worked with him before. Nana Yaw Amponsah wrote me a letter to exit the head coach position to be the assistant coach for coach tony Lokko to be the head and I should not grant any interview about my sack when he was the CEO of Conners Babies Fc.”

“After I was sacked, Coach Tony Lokko played 8 matches and lost all of them.”

“When I say I can coach Kotoko they says am too young and inexperienced so is Nana Yaw Amponsah. He has no experience to handle the CEO position of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, George Amoako is far better than him”, Coach Mallam Yahaya said in an interview with Ashh FM.

He added, “A team like Kotoko should not employ an inexperience person like Nana Yaw Amponsah because he could not even handle a small team like Conners”.

  • Bekwai govt hospital laments encroachment on project site

Health officials in Bekwai in the Ashanti Region say they are grappling with the encroachment of lands at the yet-to-be-completed 120-bed capacity hospital project.

Officials are worried the development may hinder the future expansion of the project.

Administrator for the Bekwai Government Hospital, Eric Frimpong expressed these concerns during a visit by the Health Minister to the project site.

“Expansion is now one of the most challenging things that we now face as management, the allocation of the land was about 152 acres but the community has taken about 80 acres of the land which will most likely affect the future expansion of this project,” said Frimpong, adding that, “The next facility to the mortuary is a private accommodation and we know that it poses health implications.”

“With an infectious disease like COVID-19, the community stands a chance of getting infected. We have given them a lot of cautions, written to the MCE and the MP about the takeover of the land but no one seems to care,” he continued.

The 120-bed capacity hospital, which is on the verge of completion has been under construction for almost five decades.

Although the project had been captured in annual budgets of successive governments, it has seen little improvement.

The facility which started in the early 1970s now has two contractors — Consar Ghana Ltd and Ellipse Company — winding up their works for the planned inauguration in November this year.

    Lifeline

The completion of the multi-million-dollar project was given a boost when Parliament, in August 2019, approved a €2 million facility towards its completion.

Completion and inauguration of the municipal hospital would be a dream come true for the chiefs and people of the Bekwai Municipality and its surrounding communities who have waited for decades to see the completion of the project.

When finished, the hospital would decongest the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). This is due to its size, departments and strategic location in the Ashanti Region, which makes it easy to reach from the Eastern and Central regions.

Some of the key facilities that the hospital would have are an Accident and Emergency unit, Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) unit, Surgical theatres and wards, X-Ray unit, general consulting rooms, mother and baby unit, laboratory, antenatal unit and staff accommodation.

    Unique feature

One unique feature of the hospital is a guest lodge where relations who need to be close to patients on admission at the facility would be housed while waiting for their relatives to recover.

This is the first of its kind in any government hospital in the country.

The guest lodge will remove the challenges of transportation and accommodation faced by relatives of patients on admission at the hospital.

Apart from ensuring that the guests can attend to the social needs of their relatives while on admission at the right time, it will also save the relations the drudgery of hovering around health facilities as they wait for their relations to recover from their ailments at the hospital.

The new hospital will be disability-friendly.

English giants Arsenal still hold high interest in Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey, according to reports in the UK.

However, reports in the UK suggest that the Gunners are waiting until the Ghanaian makes a contract decision at Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal, who view their midfield as a priority area to reinforce this summer, are waiting to discover the outcome of these talks before making a move for the 27-year-old.

He scored 3 goals in 35 league appearances for Atletico last term.

  • Afrobeats: New chart names genre’s top artists in the UK

J Hus has been named the top Afrobeats artist in the UK over the past 12 months, as the genre finally gets its own chart.

Based on streaming data and sales, he’s followed by Nigeria’s Burna Boy and Hackney collective NSG.

The Official UK Afrobeats Top 20 will be announced on BBC Radio 1Xtra on Sunday.

Mark Strippel, 1Xtra’s head of programmes said the chart was “much-needed and long overdue”.

Afrobeats has quickly grown to dominate playlists and radio, with UK artists developing their own style and sound (Afroswing/Afro bashment) from its origins in west Africa.

Young T & Bugsey’s Don’t Rush has been named the top Afrobeats track of the past year.

    An Afrobeats History

    Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, Wizkid

Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage and Wizkid are among the genre’s superstars

The ‘s’ in Afrobeats is crucial.

Don’t confuse it with Afrobeat – which was pioneered in the late 1960s by Nigerian artist and activist Fela Kuti.

Fela and his drummer Tony Allen formed a movement when they fused funk and jazz with Ghanaian highlife, traditional Yoruba music and conscious lyrics.

The 2010s saw the rise of another musical movement out of Nigeria with a completely different sound, dubbed Afrobeats.

D’Banj’s 2012 hit Oliver Twist, which reached number nine in the UK charts, was probably the first time the sound really took hold in the UK.

    D'Banj

Oliver Twist by D’Banj reached number nine in the UK charts

Big tracks from Fuse ODG like Antenna and Azonto followed, but more recently in the UK, the lines have been blurred between sounds from the West Indies, London and West Africa.

Brixton rapper Sneakbo’s music hinted at the genesis to come at the start of the decade, and by the end of it artists like Yxng Bane and Not3s were at the forefront of what was being dubbed Afro bashment, or Afroswing.

Along with the likes of NSG, Juls, Naira Marley and Afro B, they’ve helped popularise the sound in the UK – while J Hus and his producer JAE5 have arguably had the most success combining dancehall with West African sonics and black British genres and flows.

    Fuse ODG

Fuse ODG is from London but got his musical identity after returning to Ghana

Afrobeats reached new levels internationally when Drake featured Wizkid on 2016’s One Dance.

It’s arguably not got too much of an Afrobeats sound – borrowing more from dancehall and UK funky house – but it put a spotlight on Wizkid and the genre he flies the flag for.

Fuse ODG’s spoken of wanting to create a new image of Africa through Afrobeats music too.

His Tina movement – which stands for This Is New Africa – “urges Africans in the Motherland and the diaspora to use their skills to rebuild their community and show the world the more beautiful side of Africa”.

    An Afrobeats Hijack?

In 2019, Afrobeats artists collectively spent 86 weeks in the Official Chart Top 40, up from 24 weeks in 2017.

The number of tracks featuring a lead or featured Afrobeats act has also doubled in the same period, led predominantly by British artists.

“London is the home of Afrobeats outside of Africa,” says Folabi Ogonkoya, who runs CocoCure – a venue dedicated to the genre.

Born in Lagos, Folabi’s been putting on Afrobeats nights in the UK for 13 years to reflect the music he enjoyed when he was growing up.

“I was listening to Afrobeats before it even had a name,” he says.

“The parties started off a bit slow but they picked up as the genre got more popular and so I decided to stay in the UK. ”

    Folabi Ogunkoya

Folabi Ogonkoya nearly moved back to Nigeria but saw an Afrobeats opportunity

He says lots of British artists have “hijacked” Afrobeats in a good way, moving the music forward and increasing its popularity.

“The fans are huge now. At first it was Africans in the diaspora but now everyone’s embraced it. Things have worked out for the best.”

From Manchester to London to Lagos

Male artists dominate the Afrobeats scene but Manchester-born Ezi Emela is one of several female singers making their mark.

“I can see Afrobeats becoming the world’s biggest musical genre soon,” she says.

Until January 2019, she was living in London but decided she wanted a change. During a holiday to Nigeria, she phoned her mum to tell her she was sticking around.

“My sounds has grown so much since I’ve been here,” she tells Radio 1 Newsbeat, from her home in Lagos.

    Ezi Emela

Ezi Emela has released tracks including Chineke Meh, Confam It and new single No Love

Nigeria is her parents’ birth country and Ezi says “being in the actual continent where my genre stems from” has given her “a new juj”.

“In the UK, I don’t think I was connected to the music and I felt I was faking it a little bit.

“I hadn’t connected to the culture.”

She thinks every artist “getting into the African swing of things” should try to get to Africa at some point (travel restrictions permitting obviously).

“It’s changed me a lot. It has changed my style. It has given me a lot of inspiration and it’s all made a big difference to my music.”

  • Mid-year budget: Media wont be allowed to set up makeshift studios for coverage

Parliament has decided not to allow the media to set up make-shift studios in the house to cover the 2020 mid-year budget review.

The budget-review is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, July 23, 2020.

According to information from the Public Affairs Department of Parliament, the directive is in line with COVID-19 protocols put in place by the House.

Journalists and media houses as part of activities to enhance their coverage of major happenings in parliament such as the reading of the national budgets are allowed on such special occasions to set up makeshift studios in the foyer of the parliamentary chamber.

However, the House believes such an arrangement cannot be granted due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Following the announcement of the first two cases of COVID-19 in Ghana on March 12, 2020, parliament introduced a number of measures aimed at reducing the risk of infection in the house.

Amongst the measures taken are the closure of the public gallery, introduction of sanitary material at vantage areas in the House and a mass testing programme introduced for legislators, parliamentary staff and members of the parliamentary press corps.

The Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye in addressing the house on Wednesday said all name tags on seats in the chamber will be removed for free-seating of MPs.

He said this is in a bid to ensure social distancing and MPs who do not find space within the chamber are free to observe proceedings on TV in their offices or from the public gallery.

“The will be free-seating in the chamber. All name tags will be removed for tomorrow. Members may only sit on alternative seats such that there may be empty seats between two members,” he said.

He added that visiting members of the public remain banned from the chamber and are encouraged to follow the proceedings in the mass media.

“The protocol that debars visitors to parliament remains in force. The public gallery will not be open to the public,” he noted.

While indicating that social distancing should be observed within the press gallery, he said the House will not countenance crowding or any form of gathering against the COVDI-19 protocols.

  • Hollywood stars join Williams in funding new LA women’s team

A group including Serena Williams will fund a new Los Angeles-based women’s team to launch in time for the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League season.

Tennis great Williams joins several other high-profile women, including Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman, in founding the female-majority group.

The team name and home venue are yet to be decided, but the ownership group has called itself ‘Angel City’.

There is currently no California-based team in the NWSL.

NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird says the league has “long sought” an LA-based team, which already has a “massive” interest in women’s football.

Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of tech company Reddit, is part of the ownership group. The couple’s two-year-old daughter Olympia is also listed as an owner.

Among the group too are 14 former US national team players, actresses Eva Longoria, Jennifer Garner, Uzo Aduba, Jessica Chastain and America Ferrera, plus investors from the technology and media sectors.

“We come together with a collective passion for bringing about change,” added the consortium’s co-founder and president Julie Uhrman, who is a media and gaming entrepreneur.

  • Sterling-inspired Man City leave Watford vulnerable to relegation

Watford failed to ease their relegation fears in the wake of Nigel Pearson’s surprise sacking as they were hammered by a Raheem Sterling-inspired Manchester City.

Pearson became the Hornets’ third managerial casualty of the campaign on Monday, leaving Under-23 coach Hayden Mullins and his assistant Graham Stack in charge for their final two games.

And they could hardly have had a tougher first assignment than against City, who completed the double over them with this win, at an aggregate score of 12-0 – a joint Premier League record for one team against another in a single season.

Sterling took the game away from the home side before half-time, firing in a rising shot to open the scoring before doubling the advantage by following up his own saved penalty – awarded for a foul on him by Will Hughes.

Phil Foden added a third after Ben Foster had parried a Sterling shot before Aymeric Laporte nodded in from Kevin de Bruyne’s free-kick.

It is second-placed City’s fourth successive league win.

Having won back-to-back games against Norwich and Newcastle, Watford have now lost two in a row and remain just a place and three points above the relegation zone.

A Villa victory over Arsenal later on Tuesday will mean the Hornets drop into the bottom three going into the season’s final day on Sunday, with their fate no longer in their own hands.

  • Nile dam dispute: Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan agree to resume talks

The first-year target for filling the controversial mega dam on the River Nile has been reached, Ethiopia says.

This would allow the first set of turbines to be tested.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s announcement came as Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan agreed to resume talks over the dam, following a virtual summit.

The project has been a source of huge diplomatic tension since its construction began in Ethiopia in 2011.

Ethiopia sees the hydroelectric project as crucial for its economic growth and a vital source of energy.

But Egypt and Sudan, which are downstream, fear the $4bn (£3bn) dam will greatly reduce their access to water.

Years of fraught negotiations have failed to reach a consensus on how and when to fill the reservoir, and how much water it should release.

When operational, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (Gerd) will generate 6,000 megawatts, making it the largest hydroelectric dam in Africa. It will provide power to some 65 million Ethiopians, who currently lack a regular electricity supply.

What did the Ethiopian PM say?

“It has become evident over the past two weeks in the rainy season that the Gerd first year filling is achieved and the dam under construction is already overtopping,” Mr Abiy said.

Ethiopia’s Water Minister Seleshi Bekele said this would allow the first set of turbines to be tested.

The statement did not give a figure for how much water was now in the dam reservoir but Ethiopia previously said the first-year target was 4.9 billion cubic meters of water, taking it up to the height of the lowest point on the dam wall.

Ethiopia had always said it would fill the dam in July, while Egypt had warned it to delay while talks continued.

It remains unclear whether Ethiopia has done anything to speed up the process of filling the dam, or whether the dam is only filling up because of the rain.

Sudan has previously said it has noticed a drop in the flow of water on the Blue Nile in its territory.

    Ethiopia dam mapTransparent line

    What happened with the talks?

The agreement to resume talks was struck during a meeting of the African Union (AU), chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

It came after previous meetings, mediated by the AU, failed to produce an agreement between the three countries.

Earlier this year, the US also tried, and failed, to broker a deal.

In a statement, Egypt’s presidency said future negotiations would focus on “developing a binding legal agreement on the rules for filling and operating” the dam.

  • US orders China to close Houston consulate

The US has ordered China to close its consulate in Houston, Texas, by Friday – a move described as “political provocation” by Beijing.

The US State Department said the decision was taken “in order to protect American intellectual property”.

But China’s foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said it was “outrageous and unjustified”.

The statements came after unidentified individuals were filmed burning paper in bins in the building’s courtyard.

Tensions have been rising between the US and China for some time. President Donald Trump’s administration has clashed repeatedly with Beijing over trade and the coronavirus pandemic, as well as China’s imposition of a controversial new security law on Hong Kong.

Then on Tuesday, the US justice department accused China of sponsoring hackers targeting labs developing Covid-19 vaccines, charging two Chinese nationals who allegedly spied on US research companies and got help from state agents for other thefts.

Why did the US say it was closing the consulate?

The US State Department released a statement shortly after Mr Wang spoke on Wednesday.

“We have directed the closure of PRC [People’s Republic of China] Consulate General Houston, in order to protect American intellectual property and American’s private information,” State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said.

She added the US “will not tolerate the PRC’s violations of our sovereignty and intimidation of our people, just as we have not tolerated the PRC’s unfair trade practices, theft of American jobs, and other egregious behaviour.”

Ms. Ortagus also pointed to the Vienna Convention, under which states “have a duty not to interfere in the internal affairs” of a host country.

The consulate is one of five in US, not counting the embassy in Washington DC. It is unclear why this one was singled out.

How did China react to the order?

China called the decision “an unprecedented escalation”, saying it violated international law. Mr Wang went on to say Washington had been “shifting the blame to China with stigmatization and unwarranted attacks”.

He urged the US to reconsider, saying if it insists “on going down this wrong path, China will react with firm countermeasures”.
“In reality, in terms of the number of Chinese and American embassies and consulates in each other’s countries and the number of diplomatic and consular staff, the US has far more people working in China,” Mr Wang said.

Chinese state media the Global Times began running a poll on which US consulate to close in response.

What is happening at the consulate?

The first signs something unusual may be happening at the Houston consulate emerged on Tuesday, when people overlooking the building’s courtyard noticed several bins on fire.

Footage shows people throwing what appears to be paper into the bins. It is not known who they were. People were later filmed appearing to pour water on the bins.

Emergency services were called to the building on Tuesday evening. However, the Houston police force said on Twitter officers “were not granted access to enter the building”, but did see smoke.

Mr Wang did not directly address the fires in the consulate’s courtyard, simply saying it was operating as normal.

  • Manchester City 12-0 Watford, City sets record in the premier after win at Watford

Manchester City are always a side no other team will love, hope or want to face due to their attacking qualities and squad quality overall.

They have been a dreadful team since Pep Guardiola took over at Etihad Stadium in 2016/2017 season, dominating England for the past three years, lifting the Premier League trophy back-to-back couple with league cups.

Manchester City are known to play beautiful and attacking football with quality and speedy attackers, like Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, which sometimes makes their attack plays easy with their trickiness.

Its no news and fluke that the team at Pep Guardiola’s disposal is as a result of the money he has pumped into his side, though his personal quality and managerial masterminds is massive and can not be written off.

Manager Pep Guardiola is a winner, and has done so in all of his previous clubs even with City, but where his luck seems to fail him at City is in European Competition, they have not come this close to carrying the Champions League, a competition they have always and virtually disintegrated teams, in group stages.

However, Manchester City have set a record in the Premier League, evidence of their goal scoring fluidity and prowess in the league, as they have and can boast of the best numbers of goals recorded each seasons since Pep Guardiola’s reign.

City beat Watford at Vicarage Road with a scoreline of 4-0, a match Sterling took the game away from the home side before half-time, with a brace firing in a rising shot to open the scoring before doubling the advantage by following up his own saved penalty, awarded after Will Hughes committed a foul one the England international in the 18 yard box.

Phil Foden added a third after Ben Foster had parried a Sterling shot before Aymeric Laporte nodded in from Kevin de Bruyne’s free-kick, meaning that Watford who are fighting for a survival for the top four do not stand a chance.

The first leg on Saturday, 21st September, 2019, featured Manchester City score a whooping eight, as Bernardo Silva got his first hat-trick as a Manchester City player, with David Silva, Kun Aguero, Riyad Mahrez, Otamendi and De Bryune all getting on the score sheet on that encounter.

City ran riot as they clinched their best and biggest league win for Pep Guardiola since he took charge, a match the Cityzens hit the woodwork twice.

In aggregate, from their first and second leg encounters respectively, Manchester City have scored 12 goals to nill against Watford, setting a Premier League record, a joint top-flight record for one team against another in a single season.

  • Opinion: Journalists that Ghanaians are saying have lost their credibility!

This article is going explore into the subject of credibility journalists in Ghana.

What does it mean to be credible? It is the quality of being trusted and believed in. So losing credibility means losing the quality of being trustworthy and believable.

Ghanaians are saying there are some top journalists in this country who have lost their credibility. Journalists are the referees of democracy. Meaning, they officiate democracy, so they cannot be biased and they cannot take side. Journalists are also the watch dogs of every nation.

Journalists who have lost credibility are the journalist who have become biased in their submissions and presentation.

In any democratic country the media plays a vital role in creating, moulding and reflecting public opinion. Also the Government can use the media more effectively to make it an instrument of social change.

So journalists are all for the interest of the general public and not be in bed with the government of the day. So, journalists who have lost their credibility are journalists who are in bed with the government of the day and have become biased, so they are no longer trustworthy and believable.

So, who are these journalists that Ghanaians are saying have lost credibility.

    Paul Adom Okyere

Paul Adom Okyere of Good evening Ghana fame. Some of us grew up watching Paul on Good evening Ghana on Metro tv and his presentations and submissions were impeccable. He was all about Ghana. I mean the progress and the well being of Ghana was his major concern.

So he made sure he treats every topic he brings on the table without prejudice and biased. His objectivity was never in question.

But now, it seems as if he works for the npp government. In fact, our research shows that Paul Adom Okyere is a member of the board of directors of the NCA. These members were selected by the president his excellency Nana Akuffo Addo.

On his program Good evening Ghana Mr Paul is almost like an npp or a government communicator, where he speaks for the government and lambasts NDC members with the slightest opportunity.

Ghanaians are saying Mr. Paul Adom Okyere has lost credibility.

    Kweku Baako Malik Jnr

Another tried and tested journalist who has lost his credibility says Ghanaians Kweku Baako. Mr Kweku Baako was a known national watch dog. In those days he used to criticize the NDC government led by the Flt lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings to the admiration of all Ghanaians.

But his stance changed as soon as Npp won power in 2000. Since then he has been in love if not in bed with every Npp government and Ghanaians are saying Mr. Malik Kweku Baako has lost credibility. He can no longer be trusted.

    Anas Aremeyaw Anas

The investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas is another journalist under fire that most Ghanains think have lost his credibility.

His problems started after the Number 12 expose when top government officials including the president and the vice president of Ghana were all implicated in this video.

After this expose, all kinds of allegations were leveled against the investigative journalist. Some believe he took money just to destroy the big men of this country. This campaign was led by our honourable member Kenneth Agyapong. In fact, Ken brought out all kinds of videos just to prove that Anas Aremeyaw Anas is a fraud.

Since then, most Ghanaians have lost faith in Anas Aremeyaw Anas. He is still a very respectable figure around the world though.

    Dr. Randy Abbey

Another journalist most Ghanaians see today as an NDC communicator Randy Abbey. On his program Good morning Ghana, most Ghanaians think he speaks too much for the NDC and Ghanaians are not happy at all with him.

Dr. Randy Abbey, Ghanaians are saying you have lost credibility.

    Manasseh Azuri

Manasseh Azuri to many Ghanaians is an NDC secret agent. Especially when he claimed the former president John Mahama was his friend. His reputation came into question when he did some investigative journalism work about the fact that Npp are training their foot soldiers at the castle then the seat of governments.

Later explanations came that the people he filmed are young people seeking employment from a security employment agency whose office is at the castle. The man behind this security agency was a former bodyguard of our current president.

But after this expose, Ghanaians said Manasseh Azuri has lost credibility. He can no longer be trusted.

    Kwame Sefa Kayi

Another senior journalist in this country that Ghanaians are saying has lost credibility is Kwame Sefa Kayi, known as Chairman general. Most Ghanaians believe that he has turn his Peace fm morning show program into an Npp cauldron. As at now, the main opposition party NDC have abandoned and boycotted that program and have issued a public communique that no NDC member will go to his show until further notice.

Chairman General, Ghanaians are saying you have lost your credibility.

  • Gas tanker drivers embark on sit-down strike

Members of the Gas Tanker Drivers Association have embarked on a sit-down strike over the failure of the authorities to address myriad concerns facing them.

Engaging the media at a press conference in Tema on Thursday, 22 July 2020, the aggrieved gas drivers raised four major issues that necessitated their strike.

The drivers, apart from the “abysmal salaries” they are paid due to the moratorium on the establishment of new gas stations as a result of the Atomic Junction gas explosion, the police in the Western and Central Regions have been harassing them by demanding BNI and UPPF documents, which can only be accessed from Tema.

As a result, the police, they noted, extort between GHS200 and GHS1,000 from them or detain them unjustifiably.

Also, the angry gas drivers are calling on the National Petroleum Authority to halt the ongoing cylinder recirculation piloting exercise, describing it as a failure and wanton dissipation of state resources.

Instead, they are calling on the NPA to rather institute safety measures to strengthen the existing usage of gas cylinder.

The drivers say they will continue with their strike until the issues above are addressed.

    Short presentational grey line

In danger of a spiralling battle

Analysis box by Jonathan Marcus, defence correspondent

This is clearly a significant development in the diplomatic sparring between Washington and Beijing.

The closure of the Chinese consulate in Houston comes soon after news emerged of the unsealing of a US indictment against two men accused of spying on US vaccine development on behalf of China’s security services. It is not clear if the two episodes are linked. But it is clear that the Trump administration is determined to step up its very public calling out of Beijing.

In the midst of a presidential re-election campaign and with the US economy and society battered by the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr Trump has determined that there is political advantage in playing the China card.

It is hard to see how Beijing can avoid some equivalent response. The danger now is of a spiralling tit-for-tat battle, driven in part by US domestic considerations, which can only make the complex and developing tensions between the US and China even worse.

    Short presentational grey line

What is stoking tensions between China and US?

There are a number of flashpoints between Beijing and Washington currently. Some of the most serious are:

    • Coronavirus: President Trump has repeatedly referred to Covid-19, the first cases of which were reported in Wuhan in late 2019, as the “China virus”. He has also alleged it originated from a Chinese laboratory, despite his own intelligence officers saying it “was not manmade or genetically modified”. In response, Chinese officials have suggested that Covid-19 might have originated in the US, without evidence.
    • Trade: Mr Trump has long accused China of unfair trading practices and intellectual property theft, but in Beijing there is a perception that the US is trying to curb its rise as a global economic power. The US and China have engaged in a tit-for-tat tariff war since 2018 as a result of the dispute.
    • Hong Kong: China’s imposition of a sweeping new national security law in Hong Kong in June led the US to revoke the region’s preferential economic treatment. Mr Trump has also signed a law to impose sanctions on officials who cracked down on rights. Beijing has accused the US of “gross interference” in its domestic affairs, promising it would retaliate.

  • Coronavirus vaccine: Might it have side-effects?

There was promising news in the search for an effective vaccine against coronavirus this week when a team at Oxford University announced its first results. It is one of around two dozen vaccines being tested on people in clinical trials – and there are around 140 others in development around the world.

The BBC’s online health editor Michelle Roberts answers some of your questions about coronavirus vaccines.

Would a vaccine be 100% safe – I am worried that a vaccine may be rushed out and there may be unwanted side-effects?

    From Tim Pryke, Woodlesford, Leeds

New vaccines undergo rigorous safety checks before they can be recommended for widespread use. Although research into a coronavirus vaccine is happening at a very rapid pace, these checks are still happening in clinical trials.

Any treatment can have some side-effects and vaccines are no different. The most common side-effects of vaccines are typically mild and can include swelling or redness to the skin where the jab was given.

Is there any proof that the flu vaccine in 2019 and 2020 have been checked for Covid-19?

    From Antonia Saluto, Bedford, England

The seasonal flu vaccine will not protect against coronavirus. Flu (influenza) and coronavirus are completely different diseases caused by different viruses.

Having a flu jab is a good idea, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic, to help protect your health.

Flu can cause severe illness in some people, and those at high risk – which includes the over-65s and people with long-term health conditions – can get a free flu jab on the NHS.

    Getting a flu vaccine
Are people who have transplants able to have the vaccine?

    From Anne Lindo, Reading, England

Scientists are testing lots of different potential coronavirus vaccines. It is not yet clear which ones may be most effective, if any. Different versions may be more suitable for some people than others.

Tests are happening in volunteers but it will take time to get results and to know who might benefit from vaccination.

If you have received a transplant and are taking immunosuppressant drugs to prevent rejection, some vaccines, such as “live” vaccines containing weakened bacteria or viruses, may not be appropriate for you.

Would this vaccine still be effective if the virus mutates?

    From Alan Ng, Dingley, Canada

The coronavirus vaccines being developed at the moment are based on the viral strain currently circulating.

Viruses can mutate, but this will not necessarily make the corresponding vaccine less effective. It depends how significant the mutations are and whether they affect the part of the virus the vaccines are designed to safely mimic.

Many of the experimental coronavirus jabs currently being tested contain the genetic instructions for the surface spike protein that coronavirus uses to attach to and infect human cells. Reassuringly, scientists have not seen any substantial mutations to this part of the virus yet that would render these vaccines useless.

  • Coronavirus: The great contact-tracing apps mystery

Germany and Ireland have both trumpeted their success in rolling out contact-tracing apps.

But is there any evidence that they are doing what they are designed to do – warning people they could be infected with the virus?

Not yet – and the privacy-conscious way in which they are designed could mean we will never know how effective they have been.

Last month, the UK government announced that it was abandoning a centralised NHS contact-tracing app for England and switching to a decentralised version, based on the Apple-Google toolkit. This model has been favoured by privacy campaigners because the matching process takes place on users’ smartphones rather on a central computer, providing a greater degree of anonymity.

But the government stressed that the new version would not arrive in a hurry, and Boris Johnson told the House of Commons that no country in the world had a functioning contact-tracing app.

The Leader of the Opposition, Labour’s Keir Starmer, immediately pointed to Germany, as did many others who disputed the prime minister’s claim.

    Corona-Warn-App

Germany’s Corona-Warn-App was rolled out nationwide in June. A few days ago, the Robert Koch Institute provided an update on its progress, celebrating the fact that it had now been installed by around 16 million people.

“A successful start that speaks for great interest and acceptance among the population,” a statement from the app’s developer said.

Bear in mind, however, that there are 83 million Germans, and it is thought more than half of the population need to have an app before it is truly effective.

“The app works” added the institute’s president Prof Lothar Wieler. He went on to say that about 500 app users had tested positive for the virus and “had the opportunity to warn others via the app”.

But he then said: “We cannot say exactly how many people were warned, because of the decentralised approach of the app.”

In other words, we do not know whether the software is performing its key function.

Graphic explaining difference between centralised and decentralised apps

To know how well your app is performing, it is also vital to understand whether it is producing a lot of false negatives or false positives – in bald terms, whether the software is failing to alert people who have been in close contact with an infected user, and sending warnings to those who haven’t.

That’s important to know, because studies have indicated that Bluetooth is an unreliable way to determine the distance between two people in some common situations.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) told us it too didn’t know because, once again, the log history it would need to tap into “remains with the users, encrypted on their smartphones”.

We wondered as a workaround whether Germany’s manual contact tracers might provide RKI with a record of people who had come to their attention after being alerted by the app.

No, came the answer. Local municipalities run manual contact tracing and do not share this information.

RKI added that it hoped scientific tests would eventually assess the app’s impact in the “medium to long term”, but had yet to work out how this would be achieved.

    Switzerland faces the same issue.

    SwissCovid app

Its health department also pointed the finger at SwissCovid’s use of Apple and Google’s model.

“We hence have the same limitations in terms of statistics. We don’t know – and have no way of finding out – the number of people warned by the app or any false positives/false negatives,” a spokesman told the BBC.

    ‘Looking positive’

No such caution from Cian Ó Maidín, whose firm Nearform is behind Ireland’s app.

Covid Tracker app was launched two weeks ago and has rapidly attracted 1.3 million users, about a third of Ireland’s smartphone users.

Nearform is also developing a very similar app for Northern Ireland, which decided to go it alone after the NHS project hit trouble. And Mr Ó Maidín suggested that other parts of the UK and major American states could also be customers soon.

“This is a solved problem,” he told the BBC.

“We have a solution that works well, it’s been tested, it’s been verified. We can get a government up and running from the point at which we kick off to launch in a month.”

Later he diluted this to “it may not be perfectly solved at this time” but continued to brush off concerns about effectiveness.

    Covid Tracker app

“We don’t have a full data set yet but the early data looks really positive,” he said, directing us to Ireland’s health service HSE for a more detailed response.

We have actually been chasing them on this point for days, and will provide an update if we hear back.

    • Ireland’s Covid Tracker app is out – where’s England’s?
    • What went wrong with the England’s contact tracing app?
    • England’s virus-tracing app switches to Apple-Google model

As the Irish app is based on the same model as Germany and Switzerland’s, it is not clear why it should generate more data.

Although there is one potential caveat: during the installation process, users are asked to agree to the collection of “anonymous metrics” about the “effectiveness of contact-tracing processes”.

In any case, Mr Ó Maidín says we should not be overly concerned about missed or bad matches.

“The perfect should not be the enemy of the good,” he says.

The problem is that with so little data exposed, can we even distinguish good from bad?

    Problems abound

There have also been problems with contact-tracing apps in other countries:

    • Downloads of Japan’s Contact-Confirming Application (Cocoa) have slowed, totalling 7.7 million on Monday – the country’s population is over 126 million. A bug in the software had prevented users from being able to register testing positive for the virus, but this was fixed in an update released on 13 July. But the Japan Times reports that since then only 27 positive cases have been registered via the app.
    • Italy’s Immuni has been downloaded by about 4.2 million Italians, falling far short of the government’s target – the country’s population is about 60 million. Local authorities suggest there has been limited interest because the spread of the virus is perceived to be under control, but expect this to change if a second wave begins.
    • Australia’s CovidSafe has yet to identify anyone that had not already been flagged by other contact-tracing efforts. Zdnet reports that it also continues to be bedevilled by a series of flaws that have caused matches to be missed and iPhones to try to connect to unrelated devices. One ex-medical official told local news the cost involved in developing and promoting the app had been 70 million Australian dollars ($49m; £38m).
    • On Monday, France’s data watchdog wrote to the country’s government requesting changes be made to its StopCovid app, to make it compliant with privacy laws. The last official update says it has been downloaded 2.3 million times.

  • GSS to launch Ghana Multidimensional Poverty Report

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has said it will be launching the Ghana Multidimensional Poverty Report on Wednesday 29th July 2020.

The report was prepared in collaboration with UNDP (Ghana) and GIZ with technical support from the Oxford Poverty Human Development initiative (OPHI).

Prior to the launch, the GSS is organizing a one-day training program for media practitioners and other stakeholders on the concepts and methodology of the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) to enhance the understanding and interpretation of the MPI.

The training is scheduled to take place on Friday 29th July and it is going to be virtual.

    Why multidimensional poverty?

While poverty has been measured in terms of monetary deprivations in the past, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), agreed to in 2015 by the Member States of the United Nations, emphasize the need to consider poverty a multidimensional issue in order to measure and tackle it.

Specifically, the first objective for 2030 is to “reduce by half the number of men, women, and children living in a situation of poverty in all of its dimensions and all of its forms”. This declaration addresses the need to complement traditional measures of poverty with a Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), which looks at poverty as a complex issue that extends beyond monetary deprivations.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index as a tool for government

Heeding the international call to action, the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Ghana represents a step toward a more comprehensive view at what lies at the core of those deprivations, the GSS said in a statement.

“It is intended to complement, not replace, our traditional metrics of monetary poverty. The main objective of the MPI-Ghana is to gather information in order to have better public policies aimed at reducing poverty. The MPI-Ghana will show us the different kinds of deprivations that affect our citizens while providing a perspective on how these deprivations affect the ways that poverty is manifested.

“The Alkire-Foster Method counts the overlapping or simultaneous deprivations that a person or family experiences in different indicators of poverty, identifying the components of poverty in different groups, to propose policies and Interventions that reduce these deprivations. Our MPI uses the Alkire-Foster Method, developed by Oxford University. The MPI-Ghana has twelve indicators grouped in three dimensions: (Education, Health and Living Standards dimensions). Households with deprivations in 33% or more indicators are identified as poor by the MPI.

“The source of information to build the National MPI is the (Ghana Living Standards Survey 2017 and Ghana Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2001-2018). The MPI-Ghana seeks to better understand the needs of Ghanaian families and to avoid the fragmentation of government strategies. It identifies and measures the incidence and intensity of poverty, and it is used as a tool to complement existing measures in Ghana. The goal is to use the MPI information to design more effective public policies that lead to poverty reduction in all its dimensions.

“The deprivations considered by MPI-Ghana may affect households and individuals to varying intensity, depending on factors such as their region, gender, ethnicity.”

Yesterday we had Italian giant, Juventus sweat it out with Lazio, in the ongoing Serie A league title. The match ended in favour of Juventus with the goal margin of two to one. The three goals were scored in the second half of the game.

Ronaldo being a key player in Juventus, performed excellently well, as he was the one who scored the two goals for his club to defeat their opponent. He scored a penalty and an assist from Dybala to make it two goals. While Lazio Scored a penalty by Ciro Immobile.

However, with Ronaldo’s goals/ performance in the game, FIFA has taken to their official Twitter account to acknowledge the 35 year old and equally state the history he (Ronaldo) has recorded for himself again.
