  • Guard stabs man to death during misunderstanding

The police at Agona Swedru, Central Region, have mounted a manhunt for a private security guard, Abraham Adatsi, for stabbing a 69-year-old man to death.

The incident happened during a misunderstanding between the now deceased and the guard in front of the Swedru branch of the ADB Bank where the latter was stationed.

The police are calling on the public to assist in arresting the suspect who is currently on the run after fleeing the scene when an angry mob attempted to lynch him.

The suspect, together with his brother George Adatsi, were both on night duty on the fateful day when the incident happened.

    Misunderstanding
It is unclear what may have triggered the misunderstanding between Abraham and the deceased, John Kwame Akponu, but information gathered indicates that a misunderstanding arose between the suspect and the deceased around 11pm last Thursday night.

The ensuing confrontation attracted passers-by and other individuals to the scene who managed to calm them down and separated the two. Abraham who was still not satisfied, pulled a knife and stabbed the deceased in the stomach.

George who had allegedly left the scene earlier to pick up his phone which was on charge not too far away from the scene, only heard eye witnesses shouting “the man has been stabbed” following which he quickly rushed to the scene only to find the deceased in a pool of his own blood.

What worsened the plight of the deceased was that many taxi drivers failed to convey him to the hospital. The eye witnesses however managed to convey him to the Swedru Government Hospital only for him to pass away the following morning.

    Confirmation
Confirming the incident to Graphic Online, the Swedru District Police Commander, Superintendent Seth Yirenkyi on Tuesday noted that George Adatsi made an official complaint to the Police that he was on duty together with the suspect when a misunderstanding arose between them but both were separated by some passers-by.

He told the Police that his brother (Abraham) pulled a knife and stabbed Akponu who was rushed to the Swedru hospital for emergency medical attention, saying that the Police followed up to the hospital for first had information but could not get access to Akponu since he was being attended to at the theatre.

“The police again paid a visit to check on the victim only to be informed that Akponu had passed on”, he said.

  • Ofori-Atta cant explain how coronavirus funds were utilized; rather Auditor General

The floor of Parliament is not the appropriate place for the Finance Minister Mr Ken Ofori-Atta to render an account of how the COVID-19 funds were utilised, Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah, Chair of the Finance Committee of Parliament, has said.

He said it is not even the duty of the Finance Minister to report to parliament how the funds were utilized, rather the auditor general.

The Finance Minister, he explained, will submit his report to the office of the Auditor General for further auditing and assessment by the Auditor General.

After auditing the expenditure, the Auditor General will then submit his report which captures how the COVID-19 funds were utilized, to parliament.

There have been calls to the Finance Minister to explain how the funds have been disbursed. The Government set up a National Covid-19 Trust Fund which has so far received millions of Ghana cedis as donations from Ghanaians to fight the virus.

Dr Assibey-Yeboah told journalists in Accra on Tuesday July 21 that it is not in the hands of the Finance Minister to render an account to parliament on the COVID-19 funds especially as he prepares to present the mid-year budget review statement to the House on Thursday July 23.

He said: “So I hear people say the Minister should come and account for the coronavirus money. This is not the place for that things.

“In this country all our expenditures at the end of the year, we submit it to the Auditor General, he vets it, he audits it and then he submits an account back to parliament on how we have expended.

“So how can the minister who has been given money himself come and say I am accounting for this?

“It is for the auditor general to vet the accounts and come and submit a report to parliament so this is not the place for that.”

The biggest news is that Kuami Eugene is set to call it a quit after four years with Richie Mensah’s label. Why would the Obiato hitmaker want to leave the label because his songs are well appreciated by Ghanaians home and abroad and some part of the Africa continent, he’s winning awards, he’s getting endorsement deals?

The multiple award-winning highlife and afrobeat musician wants to set up his own record label and manage artists just like his boss Richie. Already he’s the one writing songs for Vanessa Nyce. Kuami Eugene who was crowned King of Highlife Music during the last edition Ghana Music Awards by the legendary highlife musician wanted to leave the label in 2019 but some big names in the industry intervened.

Secondly, the singer’s incoming team of investors wants him to leave so he will do everything by himself with their support. • Kasoa warning shot: Expedite your decision on Hawa Koomson – Akufo-Addo told

Ghana’s former High Commissioner to India, Sam Pee Yalley has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to hasten his decision regarding the shooting incident that occurred at a voters’ registration center in the Awutu Senya East constituency in the Central Region on Monday, July 20, 2020.

“I don’t expect President Akufo-Addo to be silent on this matter or waste time in handling the issue at all. Because as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, he should expect more of such radical incidents in the upcoming elections should he not openly condemn the incident and also make sure the perpetrators are brought to book,” he stated.

To him, the kind of language the president uses in addressing the matter will indicate the level of tolerance or intolerance that will erupt in the forthcoming December polls.

Speaking on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ newspaper discussion show, Sam Pee Yalley disclosed that his investigations and studies concerning the voters registration exercise shows “there are lots of challenges and loopholes in the ongoing system”.

The former diplomat stressed that the minister was wrong to carry a weapon to a polling station just to go and investigate a tip-off.

“… How can a minister of state carry a loaded weapon to a polling station claiming she simply went over there to investigate an unfolding incident? If she felt there was simmering tension in the area, then she should have alerted the appropriate authorities in charge and not take the laws of the country into her hands; firing warning shots anyhow. Someone who is a lawmaker!” he charged.

  • All 63 Accra Girls, Achimota SHS students who tested positive for Coronavirus recover

All 63 students of Accra Girls Senior High School and Achimota Senior High School who tested positive for COVID-19 have recovered and returned to school. This is according to a GES document intercepted by www.ghanaweb.com.

The students, 56 from Accra Girls Senior High School and 7 from Achimota Senior High School, recovered in time to join their colleagues in school for the commencement of the 2020 West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), yesterday (Monday).

The government eased restrictions for final year SHS students to return to school and prepare for their final exams under strict COVID-19 safety protocols last month.

However, some few schools, including Accra Girls Senior High and Achimota Senior High recorded positive COVID-19 cases among some students and staff.

Accra Girls recorded the highest number of cases (56), causing anxiety among parents, some groups prematurely calling on the government to close down all senior high schools across the country and cancel the 2020 WASSCE examinations.

The government, however, moved swiftly to reassure parents and Ghanaians of the safety of students across the country, adding that it would do everything possible ensure the treatment of those infected as well as the the safety of those in school

The timely recoveries would come as welcome news to all stakeholders involved, especially parents/guardians and the government.

Meanwhile, there are significant recoveries in seven other schools which have recorded positive cases. Out of a total number of 33 cases recorded in the 7 other senior high schools, 10 have so far recovered, leaving an active cases of 23.

In all, there have been 96 confirmed cases in nine (9) senior high schools, including Accra Girls. Out of this, a total number of 73 have recovered.

About 375, 737 students are writing the 2020 WASSCE examination nationwide.

  • This girl is cursed by spirit of nakedness – Ghanaian actress Efia Odo blasted over birthday selfies

It is quite rare to see Ghanaian actress Efia Odo trend in the news for a good reason – it is often largely for the wrong spots.

And it is not that she isn’t conscious of her actions, obviously she knows that her nonchalant attitude offers more negative vibes than positives.

It’s just that this young lady doesn’t care, whatever the consequence(s) might be.

This time, the Ghanaian beauty shared on social media some selfies of herself in celebratory mood to mark her birthday – but some observers saw the viral snapshots as quite suggestive!

It must be noted though, that in Ghana this young actress Efia Odo is popularly known for her naughty dressing, with desperate mindset of getting the attention on social media.

And she has often attracted so much criticisms from her fans, and neutrals alike, for her carefree attitude with little or no regard for decent dressing.

However, on her birthday she once again showed her naughty side by purposely flaunting her bare cleavage in a black see-through dress, with some saucy gestures.

Interestingly, some fans were not having it this time around and had to bare their candid notions over Efia Odo’s apparent dressing concerns.

The petite actress Efia Odo’s had shared on her Twitter page some selfies of herself, while rocking a black see-through dress in celebrating her birthday. She captioned: “Make a wish ✨”

But some fans were not happy with her latest ‘wardrobe malfunction’ especially on a special day like her birthday.

In reaction to her shared viral selfies, a fan on twitter commented: “Don’t know if it is correct, but is this girl cursed by the spirit of nakedness 🧐🧐 Must these small Ghanaian girls bare body all because she wants to trend?? 🤷😩”

Another concerned fan tweeted: “Ghana girls are practically the same 🤔 always feeling inferior about their body & dressing normal, but they desperately want that attention and flaunt nak3ed 😏 I tire for this girl oo”

Personally, I see nothing wrong in a lady flaunting her bare body anyhow in any way she wants – afterall it is her body. And I think it is within her rights to share her saucy selfies on social media, at any time or period.

However, what I do not agree on, is when a female celebrity like Efia Odo flaunts bare and tries to defend it as a form of being ‘Sexy’. I don’t support that lazy excuse. She cannot be dressing unclad and still be claiming she is only trying to be ‘Sexy’ – it doesn’t works that way, especially here in African territory. Just my candid opinion.

  • Kudus’ record-breaking transfer ‘not a small thing’ – Akenteng

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) technical director, Francis Oti Akenteng, has hailed new Ajax Amsterdam acquisition Mohammed Kudus for breaking Ghana’s transfer record for a teenager.

Last week, the 19-year-old, a product of the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana, completed a five-year move to the Eredivisie giants from Danish fold Nordsjaelland.

The deal was worth a reported €9 million.

“To be frank, Kudus’ move to Ajax is a good one. It is good for himself, the country, his former club FC Nordsjaelland and most importantly Right to Dream Academy. In fact, his move serves as a motivational factor to the rest of the academies,” Akenteng told Bryt FM.

“Now people who will like to venture into the academy will happily do it because they know that if you do your work very well, you will definitely get somewhere.

“I remember Nordsjaelland invited me to Denmark and I had the opportunity to meet Kudus. I spent about five days there and had talks with the Ghanaian players at their fold before I came to Ghana. I also had the opportunity to be with him at the Ghana U20 team although the entire team did not do well but everybody saw his potential.

“He is a boy who has been lucky, playing from the U17, U20 and to the Black Stars. When he came to the Black Stars, I was in camp with them and I did my best to prop him up and I am very happy to see that this boy has matured and now breaking the transfer [record] for a teenager, it is not a small thing.”

After progressing from representing Ghana at the 2017 Fifa U17 World Cup in India, Kudus represented Ghana at the 2019 Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Niger where the Black Satellites failed to qualify from the group stage.

In November last year, the attacking midfielder was rewarded with a call-up to Ghana’s senior national team for a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying double-header against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe on the back of a run of fine performance for club side Nordsjaelland.

It was a remarkable debut against South Africa as the Accra-born netted as a second-half substitute to ensure the 2-0 triumph in Cape Coast.

He made 25 appearances and scored 11 goals for the Wild Tigers in the Danish Super Liga this season.

Over 300 markets in the Ashanti Region have been closed to allow for the second phase of the national disinfection, fumigation and cleaning exercise.

The exercise is being carried out across the country in markets and other public places.

In the Ashanti Region, the exercise is taking place in all 43 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies as well as three other sub metros.

Speaking to the media at the beginning of the exercise, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah urged all traders and affected persons to comply with the directive to close their shops, as he says the exercise is for the general good of the society.

He said the assembly is also making sure that value for money is achieved in the disinfection exercise, hence has deployed assembly members to keenly monitor the exercise in their respective communities.

“Our eyes are open and we will make sure we achieve value for money. All the assembly members have been directed to go to their areas with the unit committee members to make sure that the people [Zoomlion officials] are doing the work they have been brought in to do,” he said.

On his part, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Chief Executive, Osei Assibey Antwi, noted that the his outfit has put adequate measures in place to ensure the exercise effective to help achieve the desired results.

“We are appealing to traders in the various markets that whatever inconvenience this exercise will come with, they should forgive us. We have to do this to contain the pandemic and to keep our markets clean and tidy so they should endeavour to shut down their shops at least two hours within which the exercise will be completed.”

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional General Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Philip Yeboah Asante says they are confident that the exercise will help curtail the spread of COVID-19.

“But for the first phase of fumigation, the COVID-19 figures would have been higher than we are seeing now. Now that it is known that the virus can even stay in the air for some hours, it is better that we do this exercise frequently and that is why the government says we are going to do this every quarter.”

The fumigation and disinfection exercise started after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in Ghana. The government through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in collaboration with the various assemblies has been embarking on the exercises at markets and other public places as part of measures to curtail the spread of the virus.

  • Christian Atsu warms bench again as Newcastle draw with Brighton

Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu was an unused substitute in Newcastle United’s goalless draw against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Monday.

Atsu watched the entire game from the bench as The Magpies sealed a point at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton needed one point to guarantee their survival and they were rarely threatened by Newcastle in an uneventful game which felt more like a pre-season friendly.

Chances at either end came at a premium but the hosts were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty in the first half when Neal Maupay appeared to be brought down by Matt Ritchie, while the visitors best chance was headed wide by substitute Andy Carroll late on.

Newcastle United, currently lie 13th on the league table with 44 points after 37 matches played so far.

The 28-year-old Ghanaian has been used sporadically this term by Steve Bruce, making 24 appearances and providing five assists in all competitions.

  • Tariq Lamptey features as Brighton secure PL status in draw against Newcastle United

English-born Ghanaian defender Tariq Lamptey impressed as Brighton and Hove Albion confirmed their English Premier League status in a goalless draw against Newcastle United with a game left.

The Seagulls needed just a point to secure their place in the English top-flight next season after a difficult campaign saw them battle for survival in most part of the season.

Lamptey, who played 86 minutes of the game, had an interesting battle with Newcastle United winger Matt Richie.

The former Chelsea player also linked up well with Yves Bissouma on the right flank in a game that lacked some spark.

Brighton could have had a penalty early in the game after Neal Maupay was brought down by Matt Richie, before Adam Webster had the best chance of the game which he missed.

Meanwhile, Dwight Gayle’s header over the roof of Brighton’s net was Newcastle only effort upfront.

Brighton will play Burnley on the final day of the English Premier League, with the status confirmed for next season.

However, he noted that a test result that is released two weeks after the sample is taken has very little public health and clinical relevance.

He stated that until results come, suspected persons are managed.

He said the symptomatic cases are those who come in sick.

He added that the government is going to prioritize contacts of those who test positive.

Also, he announced that health workers who are exposed to the virus are going to be given priority in the testing project.

Furthermore, he said Ghanaian returnees will be given priority in the testing process.

He said the country is isolating all positive cases, noting that the government was not taking chances and that everyone who is taken to the isolation centers is being managed as though they are sick even before their test results come out.

  • Move away from fire service, ambulance journalism – Affail Monney to media

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Roland Affail Monney, has advised journalists to be on top of their game while reporting on issues pertaining to human trafficking in the country.

According to him, media professionals have to sharpen their focus on human trafficking until the canker is totally eradicated.

This winnable war, he said, can only be achieved on a sustainable basis.

“Human trafficking blatantly violates Article 15 of the 1992 constitution. Human trafficking does not only violate this…but also disgrace human beings who are the immediate bearers of God. So if the media are to be effective in this fight, we should move away from fire service or ambulance journalism, which means, we talk about human trafficking when it occurs but we need to sustain the fight”.

“Sustainability is a key element in this fight. So while we depart from the ambulance of fire service journalism, we need to sharpen our focus on human trafficking,” Mr Monney added.

He made this remark at the launch of the World Day against trafficking in persons in Accra Tuesday, July 21, 2020.

Speaking on the theme “stakeholders act now to end human trafficking amidst COVID-19 in Ghana,” Mr Monney asked journalists, as part of their mandate to name and shame perpetrators of crime in the society, should do same to help eradicate this menace that has engulfed the country.

The GJA president also called on the media to equally educate people on the  subject so they know that human trafficking is not only a criminal act but also drags the country backward.

  • Woman arrested over Bank cyber attack

A woman has been arrested in connection with the hacking of the software of one of the universal banks in the country, bringing the number of arrested persons to seven.

The woman, identified as Aisha Konate, an Ivorian, was arrested following the interrogation of the six men who had been earlier arrested.

All the seven arrested persons have so far been granted police enquiry bail and will be assisting the police in their investigations, after which they will be put before court.

Their bail terms include a sum of GH¢8 million, two public servants and one other as sureties.

The Cyber Crime Unit of the Ghana Police Service arrested six persons after they had allegedly attacked a bank and succeeded in moving more than GH¢46 million into the bank accounts of eight people in different banks.

Those arrested included a former banker and owner of Adom Sika Savings and Loans Limited, Sam Acquah, and a web developer, James Taylor.

The others were Hudu Abdul Mumuni, Emmanuel Adams, Moro Issah and Agbenu Febous Chrissy, who were arrested when they showed up to withdraw the money transferred into their accounts through the illegal wire transaction.

Two other suspects, said to be part of the syndicate and identified only as Boateng Mends and Pussy Cat, are, however, on the run and the police have mounted an intensive search for their arrest.

The cyber hackers allegedly logged into the banking software of the bank remotely and used the login credentials of some staff of the bank, some of whom were on leave, to effect the illegal transfers.

The Director of the Cyber Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr Gustav Herbert Yankson, who confirmed the incident, said the unit received a complaint about the fraudulent wire transfer on July 2, 2020.

After receiving the complaints, the banks to which the money had been transferred were alerted to prevent withdrawals, and that prevented the attacked bank from losing any funds.

  • 2020 Polls: Concerned Mothers Movement defends NDC running mate

Following the nomination of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, as the running mate of former President John Dramani Mahama, flag-bearer of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), there have been mixed reactions from the public.

Where as many have celebrated her nomination as victory for gender mainstreaming, equality and progress, others, especially those from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have lampooned the nominee while citing Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s performance at University of Cape Coast when she was in active service and at the Ministry of Education when the NDC was in government.

But, Concerned Mothers Movement, one of the vibrant voices in Western Region, that campaigned vigorously against injustice faced by families of the three missing Takoradi girls during the heat of the country’s reported kidnapping cases, has declared an unflinching support for the NDC running mate.

Members of the group, have also called for the total support of women from the political divide to aid the chances of Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang of becoming the first female Vice President of the country.

At a press conference organized last over the weekend to throw their weight behind the former Vice Chancellor of University of Cape Coast, the group, touted her credentials and indicated that she was more than qualified, capable, suitable and affable to occupy the position of Vice President.

Consequently, the group, led by the Convener, Madam Josephine Amo, cautioned political figures against the unwarranted attacks on the NDC running mate.

“We have taken note of some unfortunate comments from certain individuals especially from the ruling New Patriotic Party. We believe that all these comments were not meant to attack her credentials but her person as a woman”, she fumed

The group cited Majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, General Secretary of NPP, John Boadu, and Ashanti Regional Chairman of NPP Bernard Antwi Boasiako also known as Wontumi, for disparaging comments they all made about the aspiring Vice Presidential candidate.

They want Ghanaians to rise up and speak against the pandemic voices in order to sanitize the political space with decent volcanic voices as Ghana cruises towards the December polls.

The leader of the Concerned Mothers Movement explained that Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, remained a celebrated first female Vice Chancellor of a public University.

“As the first female Vice Chancellor of a public University in the country, her achievements in this direction, has motivated a lot of women to aspire to the highest office in their academic endeavors”, she submitted.

Under the circumstance, the Concerned Mothers Movement, has called on women, irrespective of their political affiliations, to rally behind Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to emerge victorious.

“If we missed the opportunity, we may not get it again. This is a clarion call and a national agenda”, Madam Josephine Amo said.
