  • Suspend channel reduction directive to media houses GJA urges Communications Ministry

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has urged the Communications Ministry to suspend a directive to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and private broadcaster, Crystal Television demanding a reduction in their channels on the Digital Terrestrial Television platform.

According to the sector Minster, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the move which would see GBC and Crystal Television lose three and one channels respectively, is to ensure there is enough “redundancy on the national Digital Terrestrial Television platform which is currently at full capacity.”

However, in a statement copied to JoyNews, the GJA expressed concern about the directive.

President, Affail Monney said the directive, if complied with will significantly impact on the operations of the GBC and amount to interference by government in the work of the state owned media.

Describing the directive as being against Chapter 12 of the 1992 Constitution, Mr Monney said it also has the practical effect of curtailing the broadcasts of GBC will lead to dome of its content or programmes going off the air.

“GJA demands that the directive by the Ministry of Communications to GBC and other media houses on their channels on the DTT platform be suspended immediately.

“The NMC as well as broadcasters, both in the public and private sectors, should be brought into any discussions on the arrangements on the use of the DTT platform.  And these discussions should not just be in the form of a meeting for one stakeholder to give directives to the other,” the statement said.

The GJA believes the actions thinks the actions of a Minister of State with respect to a critical national media infrastructure cannot and should not be placed on the same level as that of private business transactions.

It added that the directive by the Communications Minister has “the potential of curtailing the operations of media houses, particularly a state owned media, which the Constitution has specifically asked to be insulated from governmental control by a constitutional body.”

The Association believes the long term solution to this and any other issues confronting the highly sensitive media industry is for Ghana to attach utmost urgency to the enactment of a broadcasting law.

Meanwhile, GBC has written to the National Media Commission (NMC) to intervene in the matter.

Director-General, Amin Alhassan said all six channels serve specific purposes, therefore, none can be taken off.

“The DARKEST MOMENTS produce the BRIGHTEST LIGHTS.

Mrs. Dr Florence Obinim sends greetings from Spain.

Greetings to all my lovely fans, followers and IGWC Church members, I’m doing fantastic.

I just have a simple message which might help you go forward and triumph over trying times in your life. Never be afraid of being ridiculed or persecuted, but be afraid of not having a God who will direct your actions. When you face challenges with a clear mind and you back it with prayers, they lose their power.

My child, you’re deserving of a great life, but please don’t cut corners or rush to get yourself up there by stepping on people. Through the pain or hell came qualities from heaven, during your darkest moments, that is when you gather courage and pray for the brightest lights.

The enemy put me through that, i was hurt but I never cried, I prayed for vindication, now God is strongly fighting for me, unexpected revelations are popping up concerning certain heartbreaking accusations.

To my IGWC members, active Church service will resume very soon so get yourselves ready for Church Service, and remember to keep fighting for the ministry of Jesus, keep fighting for those you love, keep fighting for you, you have so much to give, such an example to set.

I’ve missed you all, God bless you.”

  • US election 2020: Kanye West launches unconventional bid for presidency

Kanye West has officially launched his campaign for the 2020 US presidential election, with an unorthodox rally in Charleston, South Carolina.

West, 43, is running as a candidate for his self-styled “Birthday Party”.

At the event, the rapper seemed to make policy decisions off-the-cuff and made several rants, including on abortion and on abolitionist Harriet Tubman.

Fans have questioned whether his last-minute bid for the White House is actually a promotional stunt.

The Charleston rally did little to clarify whether his run is genuine. But a now-deleted tweet sent from West’s account on Saturday, appearing to show the song list for a new album, added to the speculation.

The event, held at a wedding and conference hall in the city, was said to be open to registered guests only – but West’s campaign website had no function for people to register or RSVP.

Before the deployment of national trainers to their respective districts, Management of Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) met with the Independent Monitors recruited for the exercise.

The Government Statistician, the Deputy Government Statistician and the Chief Technical Advisor for the census were in attendance in addition to Chief Trainers and Deputy Chief Trainers.

The meeting was to discuss the roles of the Independent Monitors and share lessons learned from the listing exercise in the North East and Savannah districts.

One innovation of the GNHR listing exercise is the inclusion of Independent Monitors as part of fieldwork and is a strategy that will be considered for the 2020 Population and Housing Census.

18 Independent Monitors made up of the 15 Regional Statisticians and 3 external monitors have been engaged to cover the 17 districts in the Northern Region.

  • Netflix warns of slowdown after subscriber surge

Netflix has seen a surge in sign-ups due to the coronavirus lockdown, but has warned investors that subscriber growth will slow.

The streaming giant added more than 10 million subscribers in the three months to July, bringing the total of new subscribers to 26 million in 2020.

In contrast, Netflix saw 28 million new subscribers for the whole of 2019.

“Growth is slowing as consumers get through the initial shock of coronavirus and social restrictions.

” Netflix shares dropped in after-hours trading as investors digested the firm’s quarterly update.

The streaming service’s revenue increased by almost 25% to $6.

1bn (£4.9bn), while profits rose to $720m in the quarter, up from $271m a year go.

The subscriber additions were far higher than analysts had expected.

While, some people might still end up quitting the service, “the pandemic has clearly shown that Netflix is an indispensable part of viewers lives,” said Paolo Pescatore, analyst at PP Foresight.

Sophie Lund Yates, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said the streaming service will have to continue to spend heavily on new shows and movies to keep its audience.

“While Netflix is still the biggest fish in the tank, if it wants to keep it that way, there is work to be done,” she said, adding that it should focus on markets outside the US where there is more growth potential.

Netflix also announced it was promoting chief content officer Ted Sarandos to co-chief executive.

“This change makes formal what was already informal – that Ted and I share the leadership of Netflix,” chief executive Reed Hastings told investors.

  • Chelsea set up Arsenal FA Cup final as De Gea blunders cost Man Utd

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea endured a Wembley nightmare as Chelsea strolled to victory and set up an FA Cup final date with Arsenal.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ditched his usual FA Cup keeper Sergio Romero to keep faith with De Gea – but the experienced Spain international produced two horrendous errors either side of half-time to gift Chelsea two goals.

De Gea made a flimsy attempt to deal with Olivier Giroud’s flick in first-half stoppage time then weakly fumbled Mason Mount’s tame 20-yard shot into the net moments after the restart.

Chelsea’s excellent performance fully merited this victory and United’s abject misery after a dreadful performance was complete when captain Harry Maguire diverted Marcos Alonso’s cross into his own net at the near post with 16 minutes left.

Frank Lampard’s side were in complete control from first to last as they comprehensively ended Manchester United’s 19-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Bruno Fernandes pulled a goal back from the penalty spot late on after Callum Hudson-Odoi fouled Anthony Martial but it could not even be described as a consolation as Chelsea closed out the win.

  • Arson suspected in Nantes cathedral fire

A fire at the cathedral in the French city of Nantes is believed to have been started deliberately, prosecutors say.

Three fires were started at the site and an investigation into suspected arson is under way, Prosecutor Pierre Sennes said.

The blaze destroyed stained glass windows and the grand organ at the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul cathedral, which dates from the 15th Century.

It comes a year after the devastating fire at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris.

But the local fire chief said the fire in Nantes had been contained and was “not a Notre-Dame scenario”.

“The damage is concentrated on the organ, which appears to be completely destroyed. The platform it is situated on is very unstable and risks collapsing,” Laurent Ferlay told reporters.

The cathedral roof had not been touched by the blaze, he said.

President Emmanuel Macron has reacted, tweeting: “After Notre-Dame, the St Peter and St. Paul Cathedral is in flames. Support to the firefighters who are taking all the risks to save the Gothic jewel.”

The French fire service tweeted footage of the blaze.

The fire began in the early morning, with massive flames visible from outside the building. More than 100 firefighters brought it under control after several hours.

Mr Sennes said the national police would be involved in the investigation and a fire expert was travelling to Nantes

“When we arrive at a place where a fire has taken place, when you see three separate fire outbreaks, it’s a question of common sense, you open an investigation,” he said.

Newsagent Jean-Yves Burban said he heard a bang at about 07:30 local time (05:30 GMT) and saw flames when he went out to see what was happening.

“I am shook up because I’ve been here eight years and I see the cathedral every morning and evening. It’s our cathedral and I’ve got tears in my eyes,” he told Reuters.

This is not the first fire at the cathedral. It was damaged by Allied bombing in 1944, during World War Two, and then in 1972 its roof was largely destroyed.

It was rebuilt 13 years later with a concrete structure replacing the wooden roof.

In 2015 a huge fire destroyed part of the 19th Century basilica of Saint-Donatien in Nantes.

    – Closure of nightclubs and gyms, restrictions on bars and restaurants, suspension of cultural activities and recreational sport

Barcelona bar owner Maria Quintana told AFP: “We’d just started to see things coming back to life with the arrival of a few foreign tourists, so this is a step backwards.”

Spain only ended its tough national lockdown about four weeks ago and was hoping to kick-start the economy, particularly with tourism numbers.

The streets of Barcelona were reported emptier on Saturday, although some residents may have defied orders and headed off in cars for second homes.

  • John Lewis: Former presidents join tributes to civil rights icon

Former US presidents and foreign leaders have joined the tributes to civil rights icon John Lewis, who has died aged 80.

Lewis was one of the “Big Six” civil rights leaders, which included Martin Luther King Jr, and helped organise the historic 1963 March on Washington.

Barack Obama is among those who have praised Lewis’ legacy.

US presidential candidate Joe Biden, meanwhile, described Lewis as “truly one-of-a-kind, a moral compass”.

Mr Biden said he had spoken to the former congressman, who had been suffering from pancreatic cancer, in the days before his death.

“His voice still commanded respect and his laugh was still full of joy. Instead of answering our concerns for him, he asked about us. He asked us to stay focused on the work left undone to heal this nation.”

“Not many of us get to live to see our own legacy play out in such a meaningful, remarkable way. John Lewis did,” President Barack Obama said. “And thanks to him, we now all have our marching orders — to keep believing in the possibility of remaking this country we love until it lives up to its full promise.”

His predecessor George W Bush said Lewis had “worked to make our country a more perfect union”, while Bill Clinton described him as “the conscience of the nation”.

Former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton praised Lewis, whom she described as “the truest kind of Patriot”.

Martin Luther King III, the eldest son of the civil rights activist, told CNN: “From a historical standpoint, there are few who are able to become giants… John Lewis really became a giant through his examples that he set for all of us.”

Current US President Donald Trump, whom Lewis had publicly criticised, has not commented on his death so far, although Vice-President Mike Pence called Lewis “a great man whose courage and decades of public service changed America forever”.

Flags were flown at half-mast on Saturday morning and White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany described Lewis as “an icon of the civil rights movement, and he leaves an enduring legacy that will never be forgotten”.

A number of foreign leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have also mourned Lewis’ death.

  • China coronavirus: ‘Wartime state’ declared for Urumqi in Xinjiang

A “wartime state” has been declared in Urumqi, the capital of China’s western Xinjiang region, after a spike in cases of coronavirus.

Officials on Saturday said 17 new cases had been recorded and strict measures on movement had been imposed.

Although the figure appears low, China has recorded very few significant outbreaks since Covid-19 emerged in the city of Wuhan late last year.

China is now not in the top 20 in terms of either infections or deaths.

It has recorded just over 85,000 infections and 4,600 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins university research.

    What is happening in Urumqi?

The capital of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region has a population of about 3.5 million.

The latest infections began to be detected on Wednesday, the first in the region for months, prompting the cancellation of almost all flights in and out of the city. Subway services were also suspended.

On Saturday, officials said the total of cases was 17. One official told a state briefing: “The whole city has entered a ‘wartime state’, and will suspend all kinds of group activities.”

    The latest lockdown measures include:

    – Mass screening in buildings where new cases have been detected, later expanding to the whole of Urumqi – Visits to other households are restricted, as are large gatherings – Residents urged not to leave the city unless absolutely necessary and must be tested if they do

Rui Baoling, the director of the disease control and prevention, said the main cluster had been detected in the Tianshan district of Urumqi but although the “epidemic has developed rapidly”, she added that the “situation is generally controllable”.

Xinjiang has this week reported another 23 cases listed as “asymptomatic”, with 269 people under “medical observation”.

The Director said the highest aggregation occurred on July 9, recording 171 being the challenged applications per day on the ninth day and the lowest recording of 31 on the first day of the registration exercise.

Mr Selormey indicated that challenges hinged on applicants citizenship and residential status within the constituencies at the time of the registration exercise.

He said his expectation about the conduct of the registration exercise was met and appealed to people yet to undertake the exercise within the remaining days to end the exercise.

Meanwhile, Nana Oduro Numapau, Ho Municipal Director of EC, said total challenges recorded as of July 1, this year, were 78, adding that 25 of the challenges were cleared.

Nigerian musician Tunde Ednut has disclosed what the Big Boy Ramons Abbas popularly known as Hushpuppi did to his top lawyer after he was transferred to California.

According to the artist, Hushpuppi has dumped his top lawyer after he was transferred to California for his trial. Tunde disclosed this in a post on his Instagram page.

“Hushpuppi Dumps Top Chicago Lawyer As Court Transfers His Trial To California

Hushpuppi, a Nigerian Instagram personality, who is facing cyberfraud allegations in the United States, has disengaged Gal Pissetzky, his lawyer in Chicago, after his trial was transferred to California.

The self-acclaimed influencer, whose real name is Ramon Igbalode, had been arraigned in Chicago on money laundering charges following his arrest in Dubai and subsequent extradition to the US.

He had also hired the top lawyer who immediately took up his defense. Hushpuppi was however denied bail in a Chicago hearing, with a judge ruling that he would remain detained until his trial later this year.

According to Premium Times, documents showed that Igbalode case has been transferred to the central district of California for prosecution. It was gathered that the transfer had come after the US government orally renewed its motion for removal in custody and the motion was granted during the detention hearing on Monday.

“Accordingly, Defendant is ordered removed to the Central District of California in the custody of the U.S. Marshal forthwith,” the court ruled after which the defendant was moved on Tuesday.

“As provided by 18 U.S.C. § 3142(f), the defendant is remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal and shall remain in custody until further order of the Court.”

It is also understood from the commitment letter sent to California that Hushpuppi had refused to retain Pissetzky as his attorney, requesting that a court-appointed counsel be assigned to him.

The self-acclaimed influencer is said to have conspired to launder hundreds of millions of dollars from business email compromise (BEC) frauds and other scams, one for which he could get a maximum jail term of 20 years if convicted.”

  • Remembering the Kumasi Mutiny of 1901

Remembering the Kumasi Mutiny of 1901. Photomontage of Private Luseini an NCO of the British West African Regiment. Luseini was one of 134 soldiers who were imprisoned in Sierra Leone after the Kumasi Mutiny (Recorded in the British popular press at the time as the “Coomassie Mutiny”) of March 1901.

Throughout the colonial period, the defense of African colonies was largely the responsibility of locally recruited armies and paramilitary bodies. African colonial armies guarded frontiers and acted as imperial troops in overseas campaign but their primary role was to maintain internal security.

On rare occasions, they did use their arms and collective muscle to defy and threaten the authorities which employed them. One such instance is the mutiny of the West African Regiment in Asante in 1901.

The mutiny occurred because the native troops had not been paid for months despite constant promises from the British Government. It started on March 18 when 60 men went absent without leave from an evening parade.

The next morning, it was discovered that 178 more men had disappeared. The native troops mutinied and fired on British troops who returned fire, killing 12 mutineers.

The Kumasi mutiny lasted for 3 weeks. They were tried under the Army Act of 1881, sentenced and imprisoned in Sierra Leone. A dozen were sentenced to be executed by firing squad, but the sentence was later commuted to penal servitude.

  • Arsenal could announce the signing of the Barcelona star in a swap deal

Barcelona midfielder Coutinho has been linked with a move back to Premier League. Based on the report reaching us, Arsenal is in negotiation to sign the former Liverpool man.

Matter Guendouzi has fallen out of favour at Arsenal and there are reports on the media that the Gunners are currently negotiating a deal with Barcelona to sign Philippe Coutinho which could see Guendouzi moving the other way.

Former Liverpool midfielder Coutinho has been deemed as a surplus to requirement at Barcelona and has been tipped to make a move back to Premier League this summer.

He has been linked with clubs in England including Newcastle United, Spurs, Chelsea, Leicester City and FA Cup finalist Arsenal.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has dropped Guendouzi from the first team after an incident against Brighton, he’s future with the club is already in doubt. Arsenal and Barcelona are in negotiations over a swap deal involving the two players, according to Foot Mercato.

The report claims that Arsenal technical director Edu has long admired Coutinho and the goes with Barcelona Chiefs over Guendouzi.

The Catalan giants are eager to sell the Brazilian midfielder in swap deal after performing below the expectations since his arrival from Liverpool in January 2018. Coutinho’s contract with Barcelona will expire in 2023. If he stays to see out his deal then it would cost the club a fortune.

Coutinho value is in the region of £60m which will be very difficult for Arsenal to spend due to the financial crisis caused by Coronavirus pandemic. Mike Arteta has been told by the Arsenal board of directors that he can only buy when he sold. A swap deal would be appropriate for both clubs.

A swap deal between Guendouzi and Coutinho will definitely make sense after the Frenchman was left out of Arsenal’s eight games in a role. Arsenal has prioritised the signing of a defender and a holding midfielder this summer.

Could this be a right move for Arsenal?

Aleksandar Mitrovic and Neeskens Kebano both scored twice as Fulham won a nervy eight-goal thriller against Sheffield Wednesday to stay in the race for automatic promotion from the Championship.

The Cottagers knew victory against the Owls would keep them in the hunt for a top-two finish after Brentford were beaten by Stoke earlier on Saturday and West Bromwich Albion were undone by Huddersfield on Friday night.

The first of two well-taken Kebano goals put the hosts ahead early on before Mitrovic took his goal tally to 26 for the season with a double.

His first was a coolly taken first-time finish from a tight angle, while his second was somewhat less assured as he slipped in the process of putting his penalty away after Dominic Iorfa brought down Kebano.

  • Ghana, Rwanda seek to emulate Singapore’s economic model

Nearly 25 years ago, Jerry Rawlings, the president of Ghana at the time, presented a document to Parliament.

In it, he outlined an aggressive long-term plan that would improve his country’s human and economic growth, rural and urban development, as well as overhaul its infrastructure. The aim was to follow Singapore’s example. The document was called Vision 2020.

According to Rawling’s vision, Singapore had transformed itself from a third-world country in the 1960s to a middle-income country in a short time.

However, whereas the International Monetary Fund (IMF) lists Singapore as the third-richest country per capita on the planet, Ghana is languishing down at number 126. The vision appears to have badly stalled.

“We are in 2020, the time that we wanted to achieve a level of growth that is comparable to Singapore, [but] we have worse figures,” Ziblim Alhassan, a Ghanaian policy analyst, told DW.

    Why Singapore?

In the 1990s, Singapore under the leadership of Lee Kuan Yew had become a global financial, trading and industrial center. Its free market and economic growth over the years inspired Ghana to imitate. Today, Singapore is considered one of the wealthiest and most developed nations in the world.

Ghanaians like Ricky Kasisi, who previously worked in Singapore, are aware of Singapore’s economic might. “Very clean streets to the carefully marked pavements, pedestrian walkways, bicycle lanes, the wonderful high-rise buildings and the pride that they exude in the beauty and progress of their country. That cannot be missed,” Kasisi told DW.

According to Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan, a former government policy analyst, who was present when the Vision 2020 was proposed, the Ghanaian government’s goal was too ambitious. “Singapore had developed so much that they had political stability and a growing economy,” Sulemana Alhassan told DW.

“We felt that if Ghana pursued the path of political stability and economic progress, we could also achieve that status like Singapore.”

    Ghana’s mixed results

The picture in Ghana is decidedly mixed. While the west African nation has managed to slash its poverty rate in the past decades, the increased standard of living is not evenly distributed. Policy analyst Ziblim Alhassan said the number of Ghanaians living in extreme poverty has increased.

The 2017 Ibrahim Index of African Governance shows that although Ghana remains among the 10 top-scoring countries on the continent in terms of democracy and good governance, it is also among the 10 countries that have deteriorated the most economically over the last decade.

For Sulemana Alhassan, the main problem is that successive governments kept changing development strategies before anything had a chance to work. When Rawlings retired in 2001 and handed over the reins of power, his successor, John Kuffour, dealt his plans a severe blow. Kuffour chose to focus on food production and job creation at the expense of other growth sectors envisioned by Rawlings.

“In the year 2000, there was a change of government and they [the new regime] also came with their vision,” Sulemana Alhassan said. “Some parts of our development [agenda] were implemented, so if they had been stable, we would have pursued and succeeded. But because we had an interruption of governance, many policies were dropped.”

    Is Rwanda ‘Africa’s Singapore?’

In fact, Rwanda is the only country in sub-Saharan Africa that has come close to emulating Singapore’s rags-to-riches story, albeit not in the same spectacular style.

The small landlocked central African nation boasts years of strong economic growth, pristine streets in the capital Kigali and donor praise for fighting corruption. “Beating the odds is a challenge we Rwandans and Singaporeans share,”Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame told Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsein Loong, the son of Lee Kuan Yew, on a visit to the Asian state in 2008. Kagame referred to Singapore as “an inspiration for us in Rwanda,” Reuters reported then.

However, critics of Kagame’s government argue that economic gains have come at the cost of political freedoms like a clampdown on dissenting views and media rights. Kagame has been president of Rwanda since 2000. By contrast, Ghana has peacefully exchanged power in four presidencies.

Singapore might now be affluent and have a robust health care system, but its government too is relatively repressive, limiting critical speech and peaceful assembly. According to a 2019 Amnesty report on Singapore, activists and human rights defenders were prosecuted for organizing peaceful meetings and criticising the government.

  • Airlines must innovate to win back consumer confidence — Dr. Kobby Mensah

Heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, airlines must innovate in all facets of their business to win back consumer confidence, Dr. Kobby Mensah, Senior Lecturer, University of Ghana Business School, has said.

International airlines servicing the Kotoka International Airport have lost an estimated US$500m in potential revenue since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country forced the closure of land, air and sea borders in March.

Business24 sources say the borders are expected to remain closed until mid-August, when a decision to re-open or otherwise will be taken by government.

However, the dampened consumer confidence, which is projected by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to last well into 2021, means that operators will have to do more to stimulate demand, if pre-COVID-19 passenger numbers are to be realised within the next two years.

Dr. Mensah said there is “low consumer confidence both consumer and [the] business to business (B2B) market.”

He said airlines will have to examine their target market, product/service offering, price, and distribution channels.

“In respect of the target market, airlines will have to focus on passengers for whom travel is an essential part of their business—such as business travellers and other events travellers.

“Airlines ill need to modify their product and services to address these issues. There will be the need to modify purchase processes—encourage online booking and check-in, use of basic testing such as temp guns, etc.”

Dr. Mensah, who is also a tourism consultant, noted that product bundling with other needs of customers such as accommodation providers is imperative to reduce the burden of cost on customers.

With the expected heightened competition among players when the skies are reopened, he reckons airlines must adopt various loyalty promotion schemes to recapture their share of the market.

“Loyalty pricing, promotion pricing, bundling pricing, and credit facilities with some financial services arrangements, as well as the use of digitisation—ecommerce, mobile marketing for booking and check-in. Operators must use incentives to encourage more of this to reduce drastically human contact. This will even cut down on operation cost,” he said.
