  • Over 100 houses to be demolished to pave way for road construction in Northern Region

Over a hundred 100 houses within three communities have been earmarked to be demolished to pave way for the construction of a ring road in the Tamale metropolis.

The affected communities include; Duhanna yili, Changli, and Bulpiela.

GhanaWeb’s visit to some of the affected communities whose houses were earlier marked for the demolition observed that, almost all the affected houses had evacuated and with some still unroofing their buildings.

Speaking to some of the residents who have lost their entire homes to the road, they noted they were not given ample time to evacuate, adding that the time given was not enough for them to be able to relocate or build a new house.

One of the affected communities, Duhanna Yili, where the marking was still ongoing, some of the residents claimed the exercise was being reduced to politics, alleging that, some houses had been left off the hook because of their affiliation to the governing NPP, hence diverting the road to spare those houses from been affected.

“They are dodging some houses, let me frankly tell you that, it is some houses that they are dodging which is not fair. Because where the road is curving, that is not where they are curving it.” Said Afa Jato, a resident of Duhanna Yili.

Regional Director of Survey Department, Mr. Jojo Adu – Hanson, debunked the claims by some of the residents that, the position of the road was been diverted.

“…for now, no road has been diverted, what we are working with is the official working document of the Assembly, a working document the Assembly approved some time years pass and the position of the road remains one and that’s what we are here to determined.”

He added that, people should know that nobody is using his or her imagination to determine the position of the road, “we are here to implement what has been approved by the Assembly in the nineteen’s(19s).”

He also made it clear that, the plan that is being used in determining the position of the road is something that was done in the nineteen’s(19s) and every building in existence then were all surveyed and shown on the map and it was incorporated into the layout scheme, and that those buildings which were in existence then will not be affected.

“It is after the planning scheme was passed and became a working document, that is when all these houses sprang up, and many of them that they are sitting on the road knows that they are sitting on a road,” he said.

He also stressed that, nobody will be compensated, and that compensation will only be given to those whose houses were outside the road.

“…what we are doing now is translating what is on the layout to the ground, hence the houses which are being affected were those built after the original plan, and such persons should not expect any compensation.”

Mr. Jojoe however urged people to always try to do background checking from Lands Commission and the Assembly whenever they are buying plots or houses in other to avoid future losses.

Meanwhile, the Assemble man of one of the affected communities, Changli, Hon. Ibrahim assured the people that what they are doing now is for the interest of the community and therefore pleaded with the people to remain calm so that the road can be constructed.

  • Bring others onboard to fight coronavirus CDD boss urges Akufo-Addo

Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante, has urged the President to adopt a Co-Leadership Strategy to effectively fight the pandemic.

Co-leadership, Dr Asante explained in an article, involves tapping into the knowledge and expertise of both state and non-state actors in the fight against the coronavirus.

“Ghana is in a precarious situation in terms of the rate of spread of the COVID-19 virus. At the same time, we have no option but to hold elections come 7th December 2020. It means activities in the electoral calendar such as the voter registration exercise would have to be implemented.

“To reduce the spread of the virus and ensure the country avoids a constitutional crisis, the Executive must adopt a Co-Leadership Strategy by bringing several non-State actors political parties, traditional authorities, religious leaders, CSOs, media and the creative arts together to support an enhanced engagement strategy. Citizens should support the financing of testing for health workers, students and essential State workers. Government should also review its policies on the use of RDTs and allow private hospitals to support testing,” Dr Asante stated in the article.

  • From Nima to Amsterdam: Kudus’ journey to stardom

Nima-born Ghanaian midfielder Kudus Mohammed has expressed his joy after completing a switch to Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam.

The 19-year-old joins Erik ten Hag’s fold from Danish outfit Nordsjaelland on a five-year deal after completing a mandatory medical test on Thursday.

The deal is reported to be in the region of €9 million with the option to extend for one year.

To celebrate the big move to Ajax, Mohammed shared a video of her mother who sells at Nima market.

He started to play on the bumpy lanes in the district of Nima in the capital city of Ghana, Accra. Nima is a slum in Accra with small housing structures and less space to play football.

His move to one of Europe’s elite clubs makes him the second native of the area to attain such stardom status after the legendary Mohammed Polo.

Polo popularly known as the ‘Dribbling Magician’, is a former Ghanaian international and arguably the most technically gifted player ever to emerge from Ghana.

He was a key figure for Ghana when the West Africa giants won the 1978 African Cup of Nations held in Ghana. Polo was a left winger and played for Ghana Premier League giants Hearts of Oak.

The Right to Dream Academy graduate was pictured with a bold ‘Nima Native’ inscription on the shirt that he wore to put pen to paper on the Ajax contract.

After representing Ghana at both U17 and U20 levels, Kudus made a step-up to the senior team last year, scoring on his debut as the Black Stars beat South Africa 2-0 in a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier last November.

  • Report rickety vehicles to us MTTD urges Ghanaians

The Head of Education, Research and Training at the MTTD of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Alexander Obeng has advised Ghanaians to aid them in their fight against unfit vehicles on roads by reporting such vehicles to them.

According to him, rickety vehicles on roads is one of the leading causes of road accidents in the country, so all Ghanaians and stakeholders should support the MTTD in impounding such vehicles, as well as prosecuting their owners.

“We admonish our collaborators and stakeholders and the general public to reach out to the police anytime they see non-road worthy, rickety and vehicles that are in dangerous condition, and the police will respond quickly,” he said in an interview with GhanaWeb on July 17, 2020.

He also added that, it is essential for vehicle owners to go to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority exactly a month before their road-worthy certificates and stickers expire for examination and renewal to affirm that they are safe for our roads.

“Vehicle owners have a responsibility, that one month to the expiry of their road-worthy certificate, that signifies that their vehicles are safer, when it is about to expire, the owner is supposed to go with the vehicle to an examiner at a nearby DVLA or their accredited agencies, to get their vehicle tested, issued a certificate and the roadworthy sticker. It is very important, when they do that, it will naturally indicate that the vehicle is safer,” he said.

  • Its fair for all GPL clubs to receive same amount from the FIFA Relief fund – Bechem CEO

Chief Executive Officer of Bechem United FC, Nana Kwasi Darlington has said it’s fair for all the 18-Premier League teams to receive the same amount from the FIFA Relief fund to be shared by the Ghana Football Association.

The GFA announced that it will disburse US$270,000 to the Premier League teams with each club expected to earn US$15,000.

Earlier reports in the local media had indicated that the two Ghanaian giants, Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak were to receive a bigger portion of the fund.

According to the Bechem CEO,“It is unfair to suggest Kotoko and Hearts should be given a bigger portion of FIFA COVID-19 relief fund. It is childish to say that Kotoko and Hearts should receive a bigger amount than the rest of the clubs. Which clubs do they play against in the league?”, he quizzed on Hello FM.

“We all play in the elite league which is the premier so you cannot indicate that some clubs are bigger than others. This is not a private Sponsorship where clubs should raise concerns about how the money should be shared. This is FIFA COVID-19 relief fund. So we cannot share on that basis”.

He added: “The most important thing is all Ghana Premier League clubs are getting the same amount from the stimulus package contrary to earlier reports that some were going to earn more than others. Once we’re getting the same amount, its okay”.

Josue then doubled the lead on the hour mark as Beer Sheva maintained cruised to victory.

  • I have a problem with the Bible – KSM on why he stopped going to Church

Host of KSM show, Kwaku Sintim-Misa, says he has a serious problem with the Bible of Christians.

Speaking with Nkonkonsa.com, Kwaku Sintim-Misa, affectionately called KSM stated that the bible is full of contradictions and believed those who wrote it decided to treat God like humans.

He wondered how the bible says one thing in a particular chapter and the same thing is refuted in another chapter. An example by him is God being all-knowing and all-powerful but in the bible would put Abraham to a loyalty test.

He asked how can the all-knowing God not have known that he (Abraham) wasn’t going to sacrifice his son for Him. He also quoted a portion in the scripture that says God regretted making Saul a King and questioned how the almighty Deity would behave like a human being.

“I have a problem with the bible in terms of there are too many contradictions. Let me give you a quick example. The bible itself says God is all-knowing. Before tomorrow, God already knows what I, KSM, will do. So, if you say you have this all-knowing God, all-powerful God and then somewhere in the bible tells you that God had to go and test Abraham to see whether he was loyal, are you not contradicting yourself? God should have known that Abraham will not kill the boy. You’re God. You’re almighty; you know everything. But if you tell me God tested him (Abraham), I have a problem with it. These are some of the contradictions.

“Those who wrote the bible wrote it from the point of view that we’re humans and so let us attribute the same human qualities to God. So, God gets angry. In the bible, you’ll find God angry. He said I have regretted that I made Saul King. God is not human. God doesn’t have the attributes of a human being to be angry,” he stated.

The Ghana forward has today wrapped up a 9 million Euros move from Danish side FC Nordsjaelland to the Dutch Eredivisie giants on a 5-year deal.

Though Kees Luijckx believes the fee for the winger will put pressure on him to perform at Ajax, he has also indicated that he sees the teenager excelling at the club because of his abilities.

“It is a huge amount for Nordsjaelland. That amount will put pressure on Ajax for Kudus himself. Anyway, there is always pressure when you play at a top club”, Kees said.

“I saw a statistic pass that he has made the most successful dribbles in all of Europe. Then you can think: well, in the Danish league. But on the other hand: many teams play defensive here. He always takes the initiative, which makes him an attractive player for the public”.Kees Luijckx concluded.

  • Stop sharing masks, it is dangerous NCCE

Mr Setriakor Gagakuma, Ho Municipal Director, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has asked the citizenry to stop sharing masks with friends and relatives.

He said the act was unhygienic and also had the potential to spread the novel Coronavirus through borrowed users and urged such people to desist from the behaviour to stem the spread of the disease.

“There may not be a coronavirus in it, but certainly not healthy for a another person to inhale, and apart from it being unhygienic practice, it is an easy way of helping the virus spread from person to person,” he lamented.

Mr Gagakuma who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency said his outfit gathered information that people borrowed masks to have access to voter registration centres and only returned it after they had gone through the process of acquiring the new card.

He said the masks were not requirement for registration, but a protective material against the deadly coronavirus and therefore urged the citizenry to desist from the act of sharing and use them correctly to avoid the spread of the virus.

The Director said it had also come to their notice that some drivers also kept spare masks in their vehicles and gave to passengers, when approaching police check points and took it back after crossing that point.

“This same mask would be given to another passenger who doesn’t have one the next time he gets to a checkpoint, is a recipe for disaster,” he said.

Mr Gagakuma urged drivers and passengers to desist from the act, be watchful and concerned about where they buy the masks and how they were handled as it might be contaminated before getting to them.

He said the Commission is following up on sensitisation activities to educate the citizenry on the dangers of the pandemic, proper maintenance and wearing of masks to limit the spread of the COVID-19.

The Director said the activity would be targeted at schools, markets, registration centres, communities, faith-based organizations, lorry stations and identifiable groups.

He implored the citizenry to endeavour to observe the World Health Organisation and Ghana Health Service health safety protocols to stem the spread of the virus.

  • New body to investigate aviation accidents

Parliament is expected to approve a bill brought under a Certificate of Urgency by the Aviation Ministry for the establishment of an Accident Investigation Bureau that will be mandated to investigate all aviation incidents and accidents in the country, in line with international best practices.

The setting up of the specialised agency will prevent the current situation where the aviation industry regulator, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), is heavily involved in investigating incidents and accidents involving operators that it regulates.

For instance, the regulator was key in investigating the Allied Air accident in 2012, the Antrak Air incident in 2013, and the Starbow Airlines incident in 2017.

Aside curing the conflict of interest in the current investigative process, establishing an independent accident investigation body was one of the key recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) after a recent assessment and is in line with best practice for regulators not to investigate such incidents themselves.

The bureau, when established, will also be responsible for investigating aircraft incidents and accidents in the oceanic region within the Accra Flight Information Region.

For instance, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is the organisation responsible for investigating civil aviation incidents and accidents in the United States.

In civil aviation, an incident is an occurrence, other than an accident, which affects or could affect the safety of flight operations, whereas an accident is an occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft which takes place between the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight and the time when all such persons have disembarked—and in which any person suffers death or serious injury and is hospitalised for more than 48 hours.

The work of the Accident Investigation Bureau will be imperative in reducing the annual accident costs attributed to general aviation in Ghana and the West Africa sub-region.

In recent times there have been major initiatives, such as infrastructural projects and systems enhancements, which combined with this legislation are gradually positioning the country at the heart of civil aviation in the sub-region.

    Funding for Accident Investigation Bureau

The new accident investigation body is to receive 1.5 percent of the Airport Passenger Service Charge (APSC), a levy which forms part of the cost of domestic and international air tickets.

The Ghana Airports Company, which receives the revenue from the APSC, is now required to give 1.5 percent to the new agency.

  • Prepare to pay more for power IES to Ghanaians

The Institute of Energy Security (IES), has said consumers of electricity will be paying more for power in the coming years if government fails to divert its capital into renewable energy sources.

According to IES, reports have shown that energy sources are rapidly becoming cheaper than Fossil Fuel Powered Plants.

They argue, about 56 percent of capacity additions for utility-scale renewable power in 2019 achieved lower electricity costs than cheapest Coal Plants.

Paa Kwasi Anamoah Sakyi the Executive Director of the Institute of Energy Security (IES) said at an event on Thursday July 16 that : “Ghanaians should be expecting higher electricity charges because if even it subsidized today it is through your taxes that government will have to fill those gaps and so the right time to begin is now.

“Many countries, south Africa Morocco, Gambia are all advancing to renewables if we claim to be the gateway to Africa why should we be chasing project as they go along. We should be leading this discussion.”

Doreen Smith, a nurse at the Soma CHPS Compound at the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District in the Savannah Region has exclusively told GhanaWeb that the District Director for the National Health Insurance Authority sexually assaulted her at the consulting room of the compound.

She refuted earlier reports that suggested she invited the NHIA boss, Mahama Sakara, to her house purposely for revenge.

“Even when you listen to the recording, he said he had been following me for a very long time. I never invited the man to my house. The man came to the facility early in the morning. It was in the consulting room. When the incident happened, I reported him to the community assemblyman and their chief.”

According to Miss Smith, she was not in the known Mr Sakara was coming to the Soma CHPS Compound that morning, adding that Mahama Sakara confessed to her that, he found out after investigations that she was at post, hence, he drove his motorbike to the facility.

“When he was coming, I never knew. He said he called someone, and the person told him I was at the facility. Even when he was coming, my colleague I was working with, also saw him. But he was going to Wa to do his voters ID card.”

The nurse indicated that Mr Sakara had come to her CHPS compound under the guise of monitoring but turned around to make sexual advances at her.

She said that even though he did not succeed in having sex with her, the NHIA boss succeeded in fingering her in the process of struggle.

She revealed to GhanaWeb that, it was the second time the NHIA boss was sexually assaulting her.

“This is the second time, I didn’t want it to happen the 3rd time. That was why I reported the case. I respect myself a lot, this is not the first time, the man (NHIS Boss) did this,” she fumed.

“The following day, the man (NHIS boss) even called me and asked, didn’t I know that I could have killed him? and I asked him, Was I killing you? And he said in the Twi dialect, Kumi Preko. So it looks like, he has not even regretted what he did to me,” she told GhanaWeb.

She reported the case to the Assemblyman, Chief and the Police because she was concerned about her safety.

“I first informed the community assemblyman because I’m working with a community and I can’t bypass them. So that very day, I even went to the Assemblyman and played the audio to him. It was the Assemblyman and my security man who alerted the chief.

So the chief came and I told him all that happened. So they were even pleading and they told me that I should rest assured they will report the matter to the NHIS boss’ family. I told them I can’t live there anymore because my mind cannot be stable.”

Miss Smith who explains that though the Sawla people lived with her like a family and didn’t treat her bad, she has relocated from the community purposely for her sanity and safety.

“After the incident that day, I couldn’t concentrate, so I had to refer the patients to Tona…The day I was packing, the community chief even came to the facility, begging me not to go. I told them no, if I’m even here, I don’t think I can concentrate. I am no more there.”

Meanwhile, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has ordered Mr Sakara to step aside over the allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

According to the Authority, Mahama Sakara is being investigated by the Police service and further actions will be taken as the facts of the case unfold.

  • COVID-19 Trust Fund spends over GH¢32M supporting institutions

Managers of the COVID-19 National Trust Fund say they have so far spent over GH¢32 million in the procurement of PPE and other supplies to aid the fight against COVID-19 in the country.

This is out of a total of GH¢53 million donated to the Fund.

The Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo made this known during a ceremony to donate some PPE and medical equipment to various treatment centres in the country.

He said the Fund still needs more donations from the public to continue fulfilling its mandate since it has used up more than half of the total amount received so far.

“To date, the Trust Fund has spent approximately GHS 32,581,233.90 out of the total amount of 53 million cedis received so far. We need vehicles for care and testing centres, PPE including more veronica buckets and touch-free sanitizer dispensers,” she noted.

Earlier this week, the Chairperson said the Fund is yet to meet all the needs of frontline workers in various health facilities especially at the district and municipal levels.

She said there are still many demands for personal protective equipment which is it yet to be met and so more of them are needed for onward distribution to facilities that need PPE.

“We have not even been able to reach the private medical centres. We have not been able to be able to directly reach the municipalities and districts. We got so many applications from districts concerning their CHPS compound which we must not forget,” she said while receiving a donation of PPE worth GHS 5 million from MTN.

  • You’re under financial curse if you don’t pay your tithe – Bishop Oyedepo

Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church has said that those who don’t pay tithe are under a financial curse.

In a post on his official Twitter handle, Oyedepo stated that “tithing is an inescapable covenant obligation”.

He added that “Prosperity, not just wealth is impossible without tithing because when you’re not paying your tithe, you’re under a financial curse”.

This didn’t sit well with OAP Daddy Freeze who reacted by describing Oyedepo’s post as “utter nonsense”.

He also wondered why the clergyman is not as “prosperous or as wealthy as Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffet who don’t tithe”.

He said, “I personally find this unscriptural statement manipulative and cruel.

“Christ didn’t collect tithe neither did the disciples, yet no one was cursed!”

  • Coronavirus fund spends GH¢32m

Details are emerging about the utilization of donations received by the COVID-19 Board of Trustees from the Trust Fund.

The Board of Trustees which is chaired by the immediate past Chief Justice, Sophia A.B. Akuffo, was established by President Akufo-Addo to receive and manage donations to help contain the spread of the pandemic.

At a ceremony to present some items including personal protective equipment (PPE) to some medical facilities in the capital yesterday, the board chair revealed that so far an amount of GH¢53,911,294.87 had been realized from the various donations.

Out of that amount, she revealed that the Trust Fund had spent about GH¢32,581,233.90.

She, however, had cause to urge beneficiary institutions to put the items which included infrared thermometer guns, scrub suits, head covers, all sizes of coveralls, heavy duty aprons, disposable aprons, utility gloves, examination gloves, sterile gloves, gynaecological gloves, N95 face masks, surgical face masks, goggles and many more to put them to judicious use.

The items formed part of a consignment worth GH¢10 million to be distributed to institutions and individuals who are directly engaged in the combat of COVID-19 across the length and breadth of the country.

Madam Sophia Akuffo urged the health institutions not to use internal bureaucratic processes to frustrate the distribution of the PPE to frontline health workers who are taking the risk of leading the fight against the spread of COVID-19.

Besides, she appealed to public spirited Ghanaians, including individuals and companies, to keep their donations coming to enable the Trust Fund to deliver on its mandate as captured in Act 1012, which is essentially to support the needy and vulnerable in the country who may be affected by COVID-19.

The beneficiary institutions included the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge, the Tema General Hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, University of Ghana Medical Centre, Military Hospital, the Ga East Municipal Hospital and the Police Hospital, all of which constitute the Greater Accra delegation.

From the Eastern Region, the Regional Hospital in Koforidua received PPE for its operations.

The Hohoe Municipal Hospital, the Ho Teaching Hospital and Nkwanta District Hospital in the Oti Region also received some of the PPE.

  • Owners of collapsed financial institutions bought foreign homes – Eric Nipah

The Receiver of the collapsed financial institutions in Ghana, Eric Nana Nipah says owners of the defunct institutions bought homes and properties outside the country with monies of depositors.

In an interview with Peace FM, the Receiver said his outfit and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has thoroughly investigated and traced to find out most of the owners abuse the funds.

“Some of the owners of these financial institutions used monies from the companies to purchase properties in their names.”

He added that EOCO has also frozen a lot of bank accounts and properties. He noted that for some of these owners when depositors made payments, they transfer the monies to their personal or private accounts.

Mr. Nipah assured the public that they have “clear and solid evidence” to prosecute most of these bank owners. “EOCO has painstakingly gathered a lot of information and people will definitely be prosecuted”.

The Receiver on Monday, July 13, 2020, announced that ex-staff of defunct microfinance companies will begin to receive their claims.

A statement from the Receiver, Eric Nana Nipah of PricewaterhouseCoopers said tracing the assets of the defunct companies have been difficult due to asset diversion among others.

“The consequence in pursuing this recovery route is that creditor claims including employee-related claims in the resolution of the affected MFCs and S&Ls are not likely to be settled any time soon,” he said.
