  • Senegal and IOC agree to postpone the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2022 to 2026

Senegal and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have mutually agreed to postpone the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Dakar 2022 to 2026.

President Macky Sall’s proposal was welcomed by IOC President Thomas Bach, following in-depth discussions on the subject.

This postponement meets the requirement of responsibility and the concern for efficiency imposed by current circumstances.

The postponement of Dakar 2022 allows the IOC, the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and the International Federations (IFs) to better plan their activities, which have been strongly affected by the postponement of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, by the subsequent postponements of major international sports events, and by the operational and financial consequences of the global health crisis.

At the same time, it allows Senegal to carry on the excellent preparations for the Youth Olympic Games.

The two leaders, who praised the progress made so far, have jointly renewed their confidence in Dakar 2022 President Mamadou Diagna Ndiaye, IOC Member in Senegal, and both remain fully committed to the great success of these Youth Olympic Games, the first Olympic event ever to be organised in Africa.

The IOC and Senegal understand that this news will be disappointing for many young athletes. Both parties can only appeal to their understanding. This agreement results from the large scale of the operational challenges which the IOC, the NOCs and the IFs are facing following the postponement of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

With this in mind, the IOC will continue to offer all IFs and NOC Continental Associations the full content of the educational programmes of the Youth Olympic Games.

This will allow for the objectives of this very important and much-appreciated component of the YOG to be maintained through the many events organised between now and 2026, in particular during the Continental Youth Games.

“This amicable agreement illustrates the mutual trust between Senegal and the IOC. I would like to express my sincere thanks to President Macky Sall, a great friend and supporter of the Olympic Movement, for this exceptional relationship of trust and quality. For all these reasons, I am sure that, together, we will organise fantastic Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026 for Senegal, the entire African continent and all the young athletes of the world,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.

“I would like to reiterate that the IOC has my full support for the organisation of the Youth Olympic Games, postponed to 2026. I take this opportunity to reaffirm my confidence in the Executive Board and welcome the commitment of its teams, working side by side with us, to make Dakar 2026, the first Olympic event in Africa, a successful and memorable occasion”, said President Macky Sall.

  • Dr Osei advocates counselling for all SHS students amid coronavirus fears

The Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority, Dr Akwasi Osei, has asked the government and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to provide counselling for students following the spread of the Coronavirus in some senior high schools.

He said told Alfred Ocansey on the Sunrise morning show on 3FM on Thursday that COVID-19 has brought mental stress to a lot of people, a situation that requires the assistance of metal health practitioners to help deal calm nerves of the students and Ghanaians, in general.

Dr Osei was contributing to a discussion on the rising cases of Covid-19 among SHS students and the possible psychological effect it has on the entire student body.

He further noted that many are Ghanaians are stressed following exaggeration of the pandemic in their minds.

“We are in a situation where we are all going through stress in one way or the other. We are going through psychological distress in various categories.

“We are confronted with an illness, this very illness we have not seen it before and the sense of it is still developing.

“So far what many people know of is the fact that it is easy to contract, it is easy to die from it, and there is no treatment.

“These are all true to some extent but it goes to a certain exaggeration in our minds and it is the exaggeration that is causing the fear and panic.

“That fear and panic is also affecting many other conditions. We may realize that somebody has a disease which might not be Covid-19 but how do you know that it is not Covid?”

He added: “How do we calm our verves down? This is where we need to recognize the crucial need of our mental healthcare.

“We need to get a lot more of mental health practitioners so that we send them to various places. I expect that all the healthcare practitioners attached to the schools should have basic knowledge in counseling, which they can give to the students. Every school should have the opportunity to have a counsellor.”

  • Andre Ayew’s 15th league goal not enough as Swansea lose more ground in playoff race

Ghana forward André Ayew bagged his 15th goal in the Championship for Swansea City in their 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest in midweek.

English striker Sammy Ameobi struck twice from outside the box to equalise after Swansea had gone ahead through on-loan Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster in the 8th minute.

However, it was Steve Cooper’s charges that had the advantage at half-time as André Ayew was adjudged to have been brought down by Ryan Yates, and referee Oliver Langford had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot.

Ayew stepped up to take it himself, and he sent Brice Samba the wrong way to register his 15th goal of the season.

The result saw the Jack Army drop to 8th position with 64 points from 44 matches.

The Welsh-based outfit are three points behind sixth-placed Cardiff City and must look to win their last two fixtures – against Bristol City and Reading – and hope the Bluebirds and Millwall slip up to realize their dream of picking one of the playoffs spots.

  • Ahafo region: 10 SHS students test positive for coronavirus

The Ahafo Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Boakye Boateng has revealed that over 10 senior high school students have tested positive for COVID-19.

Dr. Boateng has also disclosed that Twenty-four (24) health workers are also battling with the virus.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News, Dr Boateng said “In Ahafo Region, we have 24 of our staff who are confirmed COVID-19 cases. All of them are in isolation, one of them has recovered and for the students too, we have ten of our students, eight of them are in self-isolation. One has been discharged.

“Currently, contact tracing is ongoing to ensure that we get all of them for testing. Gradually, people are getting used to COVID-19. They seem to have relaxed some of the instructions we have given them. We have to work in terms of risk communication and social mobilisation. We have to let them know COVID-19 is real and since there is no vaccine for it, they have to abide by the safety protocols.”

Meanwhile, the government has indicated that closing down schools due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the various SHSs is not the best option.

“Closure of schools from the health point is not the best option, it is best we keep them in schools because if we decide to let them go home then we might as well close down the whole country…from what we have been told they are asymptomatic, so they are able to go about their studies.”

Prof. Opoku Amankwah added that “we are hoping that when they get to the exam time because we have two or three weeks before they write exams, all issues will subside…but sending them home will be disastrous,” Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa said on Tuesday.

  • Please don’t speak English when you are angry – Kwaku Manu tells Chairman Wontumi

Kumawood actor, Kwaku Manu has in a viral video advised NPP’s Ashanti Regional chairman, Bernard Antwi Bosiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi not to speak English on TV especially when he’s angry.

In a video posted on Nkonkonsa.com on Instagram, Kwaku Manu who was seen relaxing on his bed was lamenting over the issue.

According to the actor, Chairman Wontumi should desist from speaking English on TV when he’s angry because he exposes himself to public ridicule on social media.

Kwaku Manu said if he does not advise the chairman, no one else would amid tears that erupted massive laughter from his fans.

The actor said he’s standing in as a friend, son, nephew to talk to Chairman Wontumi.

Kwaku Manu, among other things, claimed he was having sleepless nights over the past days as people keep posting the Chairman’s English on social media.

Chairman Wontumi is a past student of Kumasi-based Prempeh College who seems to have difficulties in addressing issues in the Queen’s language from a number of speeches.

However, this has not deterred him as he continues to speak his mind on matters using English. Not even the mockery all over social media could stop him. He is noted for his famous ‘apartheid’ speech when he said the NPP government was a ‘movement stronger than apartheid’.

Before this, he went viral when he pronounced ‘all and sundry’ as ‘all and sundrial’ at an NPP rally.

  • Coronavirus: Respect the protocols to stay safe – NCCE

The Effutu Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has advised people who think that swimming in the sea will protect them from the Coronavirus (COVID-19) to shun the false idea.

“For one to stay safe and alive, they must strictly adhere to the laid down health and safety protocols and directives given to help fight the pandemic, which globally has no vaccine up-to-date.”

Mr. Joseph Abban, the Effutu Municipal Director of NCCE, made the call during the on-going campaign at market places, lorry station, communities, beaches and on the principal street of the municipality.

Mr. Abban said the campaign was to deepen public awareness about the prevention and management of the coronavirus, including government measures and directives to tackle the growing challenges of stigmatization and to encourage the citizenry to adopt healthy lifestyles.

The programme was in collaboration with the Effutu Assembly, Red Cross Society and the Ministry of Health and the COVID-19 Logistics and Response team in the area to win the war against the pandemic.

Mr. Abban urged Ghanaians to change their attitude and join the fight against COVID-19 as a civic responsibility to halt the spread of the virus.

“COVID-19 is real, let us not play with our lives and destiny; your family needs you and Ghana needs you alive for us to work together towards the development of the country,” he said.

In an interview on the sidelines of the campaign, Mr. Abban expressed concern about the indifferent attitude of many people in the communities because of the perception that the virus could be destroyed by sea water.

He said because of the belief the wearing of nose mask, the observance of social and physical distancing and the washing of hands frequently were not being observed in the Municipality, despite the ongoing education to help stop the spread of the virus.

He urged the people to follow the protocols, eat nutritious meals and exercise their bodies regularly to prevent the infection.

Some fish mongers and fishermen in the Winneba Township appealed to the Assembly to support vulnerable individuals living at the beaches with PPEs.

They also called on the law enforcement agencies to administer the protocols with minimum force to help stop the spread of the pandemic.

  • Coronavirus: Nzema Akropong Chief calls on police to arrest residents for not wearing face masks

The Chief of Nzema Akropong in Ellembelle District of the Western Region, Nana Adu Kwame II has called on the Ghana Police Service and Ellembelle District Public Health Emergency Committee to storm his area and arrest his residents for failing to wear face masks to protect themselves from contracting and spreading the deadly Coronavirus pandemic.

His call follows a new Executive Instrument (E.I. 164) signed by President Akufo-Addo on June 15, 2020 which made it an offence for refusing to wear a face mask in public and the punishment, a prison sentence of four to 10 years or a fine of GHC12,000 to GHC60,000 or both.

The Chief had the opportunity to charge the police when GhanaWeb Western Regional Correspondent paid unannounced visit to the community to observe whether the rural folks were adhering to the Coronavirus safety protocols or not.

GhanaWeb’s visit revealed that majority of the folks do not wear nose masks whenever they go out to trade or buy.

Some residents started looking for their nose masks when they saw GhanaWeb’s Correspondent taking some shots (footages).

A resident told our Correspondent on camera that she finds it difficult to breath whenever she puts on the nose mask.

“When I spotted a certain woman in the market without a nose mask and asked her reason, she told me that she had given her nose mask to her daughter and promised to go for it and wear it. She also believes that the virus can visit their Community and because of that she had procured 100 nose masks but later on I saw her without any nose mask,” our Correspondent reported.

GhanaWeb’s Western Regional correspondent later visited the Chief of the area at his Palace to know why his residents were not wearing face masks, the Chief, Nana Adu Kwame disclosed that he had been doing announcement about the deadly virus so that they would use the masks but to no avail.

“…I have been doing announcement that everybody in my Community should wear nose mask but they are not listening so I will want Amoako (Ellembelle District Health Director Dr Augustine Amoako) to hear and decide on any punishment he wishes and gives to them and I will be happy,” he said.

He stated that his residents believed that the Coronavirus could not come to the community but he said they had been informed that the virus had come.

He added that he had invited the District Health Director Dr Augustine Amoako to educate his residents about the deadly virus but according to him, no one is using the nose mask of which he the Chief is not happy at all.

“…they have told us that the virus has come but they (my residents) are saying the virus will is not here, do you know what the virus will bring, residents here don’t wear it and I don’t like, I don’t like it at all, I have invited the Health Director to this Community to educate them on the COVID-19 but still they are not wearing it,” he worried.

Nana Adu Kwame who is a Divisional Chief of Eastern Nzema Traditional Council therefore seized the opportunity to charge the police and other enforcing bodies to as a matter of urgency, visit the Nzema Akropong to start arresting those who were not wearing the face masks in accordance with the E.I 64.

“Is only advice that I will give it to them because right now government has brought a law that anybody that will not wear a nose mask when going out, the person will be dealt with by jailing you for four years so if they have come here to arrest them and remand them like it will serve as a deterrent to others so that they will wear it because the virus comes here, all of us will die”.

He took the opportunity to advise them to put on nose masks when going out because the virus is real.

“The virus is there and very real, it is there and it is killing so many people. I will advise all Ghanaians that when you die you will not return so let us wear the nose masks whenever we go out, everybody should put on the mask especially the people of Ellembelle”, he concluded.

  • “She hangs on an electric pole all night” Nana Aba Anamoah savagely replies a follower for asking a ‘dumb’ question

Screen diva and Manageress of GHOne Tv, Nana Aba Anamoah served it hot to a follower who asked her a dumb question after she shared a video of Tv host, Serwaa Amihere, comfortably sleeping on duty.

The curvaceous presenter fell into deep sleep in the sofa and never knew she was being recorded the whole time. I must admit Serwaa Amihere looks beautiful even in her sleep.

The video attracted many hilarious comments but one comment which seemed not necessary was a question from @mzz_alan who asked if Serwaa Amihere also sleeps.

    Well, she met the other side of Nana Aba Anamoah who replied to her saying;

“No, she hangs on an electric pole all night”

  • Cyberghana teams up with Raeng UK to empower youth in Ghana

CYBERGHANA, an award-winning non-profit organization, with the support of Royal Academy of Engineering (RAENG) and Lloyds Register Foundation, United Kingdom, are set to launch a four hundred thousand dollars ( $400,000.00) skilled development project, NICESTEP, to train hundreds of cybersecurity engineers in Ghana.

NICESTEP is one of the projects under “Engineering X” programme, an initiative sponsored globally by the RAENG and Lloyd Register Foundation. The project, which is designed to fulfill United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, 5, 8,9 and 10, will see thousands of youths who desire to develop a career in cybersecurity, data science, software engineering, and information technology. Interested students will be required to enroll in at least one unique program module at their ultra-modern cyber security engineering labs across the country.

NICESTEP, a project designed to bridge the gap between the fast-technological advancement and the rising cases of cyber fraud, cyber bullying and targeted hacking. Students in the programme will be able to develop cutting edge technologies to help protect highly classified data of corporate organizations in the country.

Cyber related fraud and targeted hacking have become a trend which has robbed institutions of returns running into billions of dollars due to cyberattacks. Youth unemployment rate in Ghana is very high. It is in the light of these challenges that CYBERGHANA in collaboration with Royal Academy of Engineering (RAENG) and Lloyd Register Foundation, UK, seeks to offer tenable solutions to corporate institutions and industries while grooming youths to equip them with up to date engineering and IT skills to mitigate the high rates of unemployment in the country and to protect critical infrastructure in the country.

The programme will primarily be launched in September, 2020 at four Ghanaian technical universities: Institute of Cybersecurity (Accra), Cape Coast Technical University (Central region), Sunyani Technical University (Bono region), and Bolgatanga Technical University (Upper East region). The programme, more importantly, seeks to create a long-term social and economic change for the unemployed youths, who are capable of learning cyber engineering, technology, cybersecurity, and software engineering related skills in Ghana and beyond.

Fortunately, Ghana is fast embracing e-commerce, internet banking and other online transactions, hence creating vast opportunities for young people to explore this area of computer engineering. CYBERGHANA invites students and graduates seeking to develop a career in Information Technology to contact them for orientation and subsequently registration to kick-start their dream in cybersecurity engineering and other related disciplines.

CYBERGHANA is a non-profit organization in Ghana which is currently running free and affordable but advanced courses in technology and cybersecurity.

CYBERGHANA seeks to create long-term social and economic change for the unemployed and underprivileged youths who are capable of learning technology, cybersecurity, and software engineering related skills in Ghana and beyond. The programme helps the disadvantaged youths and adults to acquire employable skills in cyber-engineering, software engineering, and artificial intelligence.

  • Finance Minister to present mid-year budget review next week

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta is scheduled to present the mid-year budget review to Parliament on Thursday 23rd July 2020.

This is in accordance with Section 28 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921).

According to Citi News sources, the presentation of the statement on the review of government projections for the 2020 financial year will be backed by a request for supplementary estimates.

Government projections for the 2020 financial year have largely been affected by the economic implications of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Minister will also be expected to provide to Parliament a clear plan on how the government intends to pay back GHS10 billion it borrowed from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the 219 million dollars transferred from the Stabilization Fund to the Contingency fund to help deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, various groups have already made cases for specific areas they want the government to prioritize in the budget review.

The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) and SEND GHANA earlier this month called on the government to scale up agriculture spending and prioritise the sector to save livelihoods, as it prepares its mid-year budget review and supplementary estimates for 2020.

Professor Godfred Bokpin, an Economist, while speaking at a public forum organized by the organizations said, the food index in Ghana has surged since the country reported its first case of Coronavirus disease and the fear of COVID-19 is collapsing economies.

Bokpin argued that scaling up agriculture spending in the mid-year budget, not as a favour but as a necessity will help sustain the economy of Ghana and protect livelihoods.

He urged the government to improve and scale-up efficiency in existing agriculture sector interventions such as subsidy on fertilizers among others.

Last month, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) platform on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) also called on government to increase budgetary allocations for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in its 2020 mid-year budget statement.

This according to them should form part of measures to prevent further spread of COVID-19.

  • Africa has no choice but to integrate now AU Deputy Chairperson

The Deputy Chair Person of the African Union Commission, Thomas Kwesi Quartey, has admitted that the continent of Africa has in years past not been able to integrate effectively particularly in the areas of commerce and economics as a result of deliberate partitioning and division of the African continent by the Europeans who created the modern African nations.

He said this is why the continental body of the African Union had struggle to use the over half-century period gone by to disentangle the continent politically and is now focusing on trading among itself through formation of the Continental Free Trade Area.

“All that the African Union has been trying to do and with the arrival of the Continental Free Trade Area was in significant part to disentangle the knots we were tied in, bring ourselves closer together, and trade with each other.”

Speaking to Eye on Port, the Deputy Chair of the African Union said the continent had initially focused on political integration of its people, but the most opportune time has now presented itself for economic integration. “It was not until the liberation of South Africa that the whole continent was said to be politically liberated; and the issue now is what to do with this independence through liberation, because liberation is nothing if you cannot improve your economic lot.

“Intra Africa Trade is 10%. Whenever there is an increase in Intra Africa Trade by even 2%, GDP rises by a factor of 10. So it is important for us as Africans to move freely within our continent to trade within ourselves and create a larger economic space, which will attract investment.”

He said the coming into being of the African Continental Free Trade Area is only a first step to many targets set by the continent to liberate itself and develop together.

“And the more the Free Trade Area begins to yield benefits, the more people will warm-up to it. We have to see more and more of the continental interest and less of the international interest.”

H.E. Kwesi Quartey admitted that one of the major challenges to integrating the continent has been member-countries focusing on their national interests far beyond those of the region.

“One also has to be realistic that sovereign nations can only be persuaded and not compelled.”

He said it has been difficult to push or force sovereign nations to comply with protocols or treaties and policies, but added that AfCFTA has been received with renewed enthusiasm by member-countries.

“I think that the Continental Free Trade Area was received with a certain amount of enthusiasm that has been above average.”

He commended efforts by member-countries and institutions for the commitment demonstrated thus far.

  • Child vaccinations fall sharply amid pandemic – UN

The pandemic has led to a sharp fall in the number of children around the world being vaccinated, the UN says.

The decline in immunisation against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough over the first four months of the year is the first in nearly three decades.

World Health Organization head Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus said vaccines were a hugely powerful public health tool.

He said the suffering and death caused by children missing out on vaccines could dwarf that caused by the virus.

Immunisation programmes in three-quarters of the more than 80 countries that responded to a UN survey have been disrupted, Unicef and the World Bank said.

They said the disruptions were linked to a lack of personal protective equipment for health workers, travel restrictions, low health worker staffing levels and a reluctance to leave home, all of which saw programmes curbed or shut down.

By May this year at least 30 measles vaccinations campaigns had been cancelled or were at risk.

Measles outbreaks were already rising before the pandemic struck, with 10 million people infected in 2018 and 140,000 deaths, most of whom were children, according to UN data.

Unicef head Henriette Fore said the coronavirus had made routine vaccinations a “daunting challenge”.

“We must prevent a further deterioration in vaccine coverage… before children’s lives are threatened by other diseases, she said, adding: “We cannot trade one health crisis for another.”

  • Guardiola sets Premier League record with 111th Man City win

Pep Guardiola has outstripped all of his peers past and present in the Premier League after racking up his latest victory at the helm of Manchester City.

With City in a festive mood following Monday’s decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport to overturn the club’s suspension from the Champions League, Wednesday saw Bournemouth visiting the Etihad Stadium for the latest round of league fixtures.

Pep took the opportunity to rotate his team, resting the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez, but it made little difference to the overall result as City ran out 2-1 winners.

David Silva and Gabriel Jesus both netted in the first half, meaning David Brooks’ late strike was little more than consolation for the Cherries, who find themselves in serious danger of going down to the Championship.

Not only was it City’s third consecutive Premier League victory, but it also brought up Pep’s 150th match in the English top flight, a run in which he has surpassed all previous managers in terms of success.

Wednesday’s clash was his 111th win on the bench, marking an outstanding strike-rate of almost 64 per cent.

  • Imported goods recorded 4.7% inflation

The inflation of imported goods was 4.7%, while the inflation of local goods was 13.9% on average, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), has announced.

The GSS said in a statement on Wednesday that the month-on-month inflation for imported goods was 0.7%, while month-on-month inflation for local goods was 1.1%.

Both of these percentages are lower than the corresponding numbers last month (0.8% for imported and 2.1% for locally produced goods).

The main contributor to local inflation was the inflation of locally produced foods.

Meanwhile, the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Division recorded a year-on-year inflation rate of 13.8%.

According to the GSS, this is 1.3 percentage points lower than May 2020 (15.1%), but 5.9 percentage points higher than the average over the eight months preceding March 2020 (7.9%).

Within the Food Division, Vegetables (28.8%) and Fruits and Nuts (17.4% ) were the Subclasses with the highest rates of inflation (see Figure 4). Month-on-month the inflation for Fruits and Nuts stood at 3.0% while Vegetables recorded a negative inflation of -2.1%.

As Food contributed 54.4% to year-on-year inflation, it is still the predominant driver of year-on-year inflation, but it contributed less than the previous two months.

Month-on-month Food inflation was 0.1%, which is less than the overall month-on-month inflation and the month-on-month Food inflation in May (2.3%) and April 2020 (6.4%).

Non-food inflation came in at 9.2%, which is higher than the 8.4% measured in May 2020. Like last month, the Division with the highest month-on-month inflation was Housing, Water, Electricity and Gas (5.4%).

Compared to earlier months, Housing, Water, Electricity and Gas (20%) also contributed more to year-on-year inflation. This is driven by an increase in Rent prices and inflation for refuse collection

The Non-Food Subclasses with the lowest inflation were Fuels and Lubricants for Personal Transport Equipment (-13.5%), Electricity (-35.6%) and Electric Appliances for Personal Care (-66.9%).

The national average rate recorded 11.2% in June.

Female singer Sista Afia has shown the other side of her, probably one similar to what we saw during her feud with Freda Rhymes when they clashed at TV3 Premises.

Sista Afia confronted the photographer for not editing her pictures on time, and therefore asked him to edit the photos at the particular moment.

The singer pulled a gun in the middle of the confrontation which she later said was a fake gun in her caption when she posted the video. It was later realized the singer was just playing around and was not really serious with what she was doing.

  • World Cup 2022 dates and times revealed as FIFA announce four games a day in Qatar

World Cup fans will be able to watch an unprecedented four games a day on television, spread out over 11 hours, during the group stage of the Qatar 2022 tournament after the schedule was confirmed on Wednesday.

With the relatively short travel distances for the venues in and around Doha, it could be possible for fans who travel to the 32-team tournament to attend multiple games each day.

The early games will kickoff at 13.00 local time with the fourth match starting at 22.00 local time and finishing just before midnight.

The tournament’s opening game on Nov. 21, will be at the 60,000 capacity Al Bayt Stadium, with its distinctive “tent” style covering.

The final on Dec. 18 will be held at the 80,000 Lusail Stadium, which, like Al Bayt, will also host a semifinal.

Nasser Al Khater, CEO of the Qatar World Cup organising company, said plans for the tournament were well on schedule with 90% of the work finished on roads and infrastructure.

“When we talk about the stadiums, more than 85% of the work has been completed and really now, the last two years, we’re focusing on our operation readiness and making sure we get the fan experience plans in place,” he said.

“The World Cup is always a festival of football, a real celebration for the fans who come on-site and watch,” FIFA chief tournaments and events officer Colin Smith said. “In Qatar, with the compact nature, this is going to be amplified even more with 32 teams and 32 sets of supporters all in and around Doha.

“FIFA will wait until the draw for the tournament is held in March or April of 2022 before assigning specific games to venues and time-slots. That will enable them to better align games with time zones for domestic television partners of the competing teams. The tournament was switched from it’s usual June-July slot due to the heat in the Gulf state and is the first that will be held in the middle of the European season.”

The tournament draw for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is set to be pushed back by two months after FIFA rescheduled qualifying playoffs due to the coronavirus pandemic.

FIFA said in June its council agreed to delay an intercontinental four-team playoff — from March 2022 to June that year — due to fixture congestion.

The 32-team tournament draw was planned for April 2022, likely in Doha. The earliest option is now to hold it in June ahead of the Nov. 21-Dec. 18 tournament.

FIFA has agreed to a $1.5 billion relief plan to help with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the global game.

FIFA’s plan means it will dip into its reserves to provide national federations with a number of grants and interest-free loans to cope with budget hits.

  • Premier League summer transfer window to start from July 27

The Premier League and English Football League summer transfer windows will be open for 10 weeks between 27 July and 5 October, subject to Fifa approval.

In addition, the Premier League and EFL say there will be a domestic-only window between 5-16 October.

“During this window, clubs will only be able to trade with EFL clubs (either loans or permanent registrations),” said a Premier League statement.

“No transfers can take place between Premier League clubs in this period.”

The EFL also said any new signings by its clubs could not play until the start of the 2020-21 season.

“This is applicable to clubs involved in the Championship play-offs,” it explained in a statement.

The EFL added: “The window for international registrations closes at 23:00 BST on Monday, 5 October, with an agreement in place with the Premier League for an extended two-week domestic-only window, which will close at 17:00 on Friday, 16 October.”

There has not yet been any announcement on a start date for the 2020-21 season.

Launching the new season on 12 September remains the most likely option, but that comes immediately after September’s round of international games.

The Football Association and EFL are concerned the reduced number of match dates will have an impact on their respective cup competitions.

  • Nick Cannon: US TV host fired by MTV owner in anti-Semitism row

Nick Cannon has been fired from his MTV show Wild ‘N Out and other work for the channel’s parent company, which said he had promoted anti-Semitic comments.

ViacomCBS said a recent episode of his podcast Cannon’s Class “promoted hateful speech and spread anti-Semitic conspiracy theories”.

In response, Cannon said he does “not condone hate speech nor the spread of hateful rhetoric”.

The star also presents The Masked Singer, which is made by Fox.

He created Wild ‘N Out, an improv series that has had 15 series, but which will now come to an end.

He has also hosted a string of shows for the ViacomCBS-owned Nickelodeon channel over more than 20 years, and was named chairman of spin-off TeenNick in 2009.

In a statement, the company said: “ViacomCBS condemns bigotry of any kind and we categorically denounce all forms of anti-Semitism.”

It added: “While we support ongoing education and dialogue in the fight against bigotry, we are deeply troubled that Nick has failed to acknowledge or apologise for perpetuating anti-Semitism, and we are terminating our relationship with him.”

In the 30 June episode of Cannon’s Class, the presenter interviewed former Public Enemy rapper Professor Griff, who left the group in 1989 after saying Jews were “wicked”.

Professor Griff claimed to Cannon that he was talking about Jews controlling the media, and said: “I’m hated now because I told the truth.” Cannon added: “You’re speaking facts.”

The presenter called Professor Griff a “legend”. He also said the “Semitic people are black people”, and that: “You can’t be anti-Semitic when we are the Semitic people.”

On social media, Cannon later said he had “no hate in my heart nor malice intentions” and that he held himself “accountable for this moment”.

Cannon was also criticised for comments that suggested white people were “less” than black people.

The star hosted America’s Got Talent on NBC from 2009 to 2016 and is launching a syndicated daytime talk show called Celebrity Call Center in September for Fox.

Cannon also hosts a morning radio show for KPWR in Los Angeles, and is the former husband of singer Mariah Carey.

  • NPRA acts to protect pensioners against coroanvirus impact

The National Pensions Regulatory Authority, (NPRA) has said it has taken measures to protect pensioners against the impact of the coronavirus on their lives.

Speaking at the 2nd Virtual Annual Open Forum organized by Axis Pension Trust, the Director in charge of Planning, Research and Evaluation at the NPRA, Ernest Amartey-Vondee, said the regulator is strict on enforcing some recommendations that came up during the three-week partial lockdown to protect pension contributions.

“The COVID-19 has had its effect on the pension industry in Ghana. In response, the following measures were instituted. Corporate trustees were made to initiate business continuity plans.

“The NPRA put in place a mechanism of how to engage with these regulated entities particularly on matters relating to licensing and registration, report submission, fee payment and others. Also, onsite inspections were put on hold temporarily whereas previous submissions of deadline regulatory reports were relaxed.

“Also, engagement with service providers were held remotely and a review of the Ghana Revenue Authority Act was done to relax withdrawals of Tier three benefits” he said.

Speaking on the need to enhance corporate governance in the midst of COVID-19, the CEO of Axis Pensions Trust, Afriyie Oware, said with the numerous financial sector challenges, a lot more needs to be done to boost confidence among Ghanaian workers towards pension contributions.

“A lot of people have lost their monies to various financial sector institutions. Some of which are actually regulated so this has heightened the level of anxiety among the investor public.

“So we believe this event has come as a necessary intervention to keep you closer and to also give you an opportunity of understanding exactly what is happening. As a business, Axis has evolved” he noted.

  • Naya Rivera: Glee star died of accidental drowning, California officials say

Actress Naya Rivera died of accidental drowning, officials in California have said after a post-mortem examination.

“The cause of death is drowning, and the manner of death is accident,” the Ventura County’s Medical Examiner said.

The 33-year-old, best known for playing cheerleader Santana Lopez in Glee, went missing during last Wednesday’s boat trip with her son at Lake Piru.

After a long search, divers found her body on Monday, prompting an outpouring of love and sympathy from her co-stars.

Rivera was first reported missing last Wednesday, after she had rented a pontoon boat with her four-year-old son at Lake Piru, north-west of Los Angeles.

The boy told police she pushed him back into the boat before disappearing beneath the surface.

On Monday, Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub suggested the lake’s currents could have caused difficulties.

“The idea perhaps being that the boat started drifting – it was unanchored – and that she mustered enough energy to get her son back onto the boat, but not enough to save herself,” he said.

The child was found alone and asleep in the boat by a leasing agent after it was not returned. He was wearing a life jacket, but his mother was not.

Rivera’s body was found exactly seven years after her Glee co-star, Cory Monteith, was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room of an overdose of heroin and alcohol.

Glee, the musical comedy TV series, ran on the Fox network from 2009 to 2015.

What did the Medical Examiner say?

In a statement posted on Twitter, the Ventura County’s Medical Examiner said that Rivera’s body “has been X-rayed and a full autopsy has been performed”.

They said: “The autopsy findings are consistent with a drowning and the condition of the body is consistent with the time that she was submerged.

“No traumatic injuries or disease processes were identified at autopsy.

“There is no indication from the investigation or examination that drugs or alcohol played a role in the decedent’s death, but specimens will be submitted for toxicology testing.”

    Who was Naya Rivera?

Rivera began her career as a child actress and model, appearing in TV commercials in the US.

As a four-year-old, she starred in the Royal Family sitcom on CBS and had a number of other TV appearances.

But it was playing cold-hearted Santana Lopez in Glee that made her a star.

In 2014, Rivera starred in the horror film At the Devil’s Door.

The same year she married fellow actor Ryan Dorsey – who is the father of her son. When the couple divorced in 2018, they were granted joint custody.

  • Flashback: What Gen. Joshua Hamidu said about Afrifa’s execution that contradicts Rawlings’

This Article was first published in August, 2000

Gen. Joshua Hamidu (rtd), ex-Director of Military Intelligence and Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, has reacted angrily to a seven-page rejoinder by the Deputy Minister of Defence and the Director of Research of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Tony Aidoo to statements he (Hamidu) made at a press conference last week.

In an interview with The Dispatch last Friday, Gen. Hamidu, 63, said that if the army had not behaved in civilized manner in the aftermath of the failed May 15, 1979 coup, “we could have summarily executed Mr. Rawlings and all this hullabaloo would not have happened.”

Regarding Dr. Aidoo’s allegation that he (Hamidu) insisted that the then Gen. (rtd) Akwasi Afrifa should be executed the General said: “That is ridiculous. It is a lie. I had nothing to do with the executions. For three weeks after the June 4 event, questions were constantly raised about executing people. I always stood against it. Surprisingly, the only person who also stood against it was Rawlings.

The young boys wanted blood and I used to tell ‘you cannot resurrect the man once you’ve killed him. If you have any case against people, try them. Let everybody hear what they have done wrong against the country.’ And that even, they could not do.”

On whether his press statement last week was written by himself or scribes of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he laughed and replied: “Well, he (Aidoo) is an academic and so articulate but at least I have enough commonsense to state my case without ranting. And if I had not written that statement, I would not be taking on press interviews.”

The Deputy Defence Minister also alleged that Gen. Hamidu did not retire voluntarily but was retired because of his long record of professional incompetence. He was sharp-tongued in his reaction: “Well, you should ask Tony Aidoo the basis of that assertion. As far as I know, it would be sad for me to have risen up to the CDS if my professional competence was in question. Of course, the government of the day was not the kind of government that would put the types of Dr. Aidoo in charge of a Ministry he does not even know properly.”

General Hamidu then added: “If it had not been our attempt at being a civilized army, we could have summarily executed Mr. Rawlings and all this hullabaloo would not have happened. We wanted to give the man a chance to prove his innocence or his guilt. And what happened? When we gave him that opportunity, they carried out a full-blooded insurrection.”

On whether he regretted that Rawlings was not executed, Hamidu said: “No. What I believed and still believe that every man or woman who has committed an offence or misdemeanor has a right o be heard and you can’t declare a person guilty until you have heard his side of the story. We gave him that opportunity. We do not know if he has done the same for other Ghanaians.”

Tony Aidoo accused Hamidu of being a coward, unlike President Jerry Rawlings who has had the courage and honesty to admit the excesses of June 4 and December 31, 1981.

Hamidu gave his view: “Well, that is his opinion. I do know this that I have taken responsibility for the breakdown. I have said in my statement that to my shame, things went haywire when we tried to bring down the insurrection. And things went haywire because people said it was an other ranks coup. When the men you command say they will no longer be under your command, there is not very much you can do. You can’t go shooting all of them. And if my admission, by virtue of my position at that time of failure to put down the insurrection does not satisfy him and makes me a coward, I would like to see what kind of intellectual dishonesty he is displaying to this country.”

On his role as a senior security operative in the regime of the late Dr. K.A. Busia, Hamidu, who said he had come home to stay for good, explained: “It’s a shame that the Deputy Minister of Defence of this country does not understand the Military Intelligence (MJ) is a security organization for the whole country. At my time, it was the Special Branch, now called the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI). The MI co-operated with the Special Branch and other security organs. To accuse me of being responsible for the overthrow of the Busia regime is mischievous and at best, a big lie. We did report to the appropriate agencies that all was not well.”

Would he be interested if he was offered the slot of being Mr. J.A. Kufuor’s running mate in this year’s elections? “I have said elsewhere that nobody applies for this job.

Nobody canvasses for this job. Nobody but the flagbearer alone can decide on who he wants as his running mate. Therefore, if Mr. Kufuor in his own wisdom decides that I have the requisite experience to be of use to him in any capacity, that will be his priority. And I would feel very honoured to back him.” Gen. Hamidu said by trying to impute that the NPP was using him, the NDC was trying to make it difficult for him to perform any important tasks for the NPP, adding: “They (the NDC) are very good at making mischief. I think they have proved it over and over again. And this whole thing is mischievous.”

On the question of his safety: “Well, I have only one life to live. I’m 63 years now. I know people who have died naturally of heart attack and other things. And I know of people who have died in funny circumstances in this country. I know that I’m being followed around. I was Director of Military Intelligence for a long time and I know that it is the government’s prerogative to secure itself. If this government sees me as a threat and wants to secure itself by following me, so be it.

I’m not doing anything or about to do anything that will jeopardise the security of this country.

General Hamidu Fires First Verbal Salvo At President Rawlings

A former Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. General Joshua M. Hamidu (Retired), says the Vice President, Professor John Evans Attah Mills, is not safe so long as President Rawlings remains his mentor from whom he seeks advice.

“Prof. Mills, you are not safe, please believe me. I know what I am talking about. Please be your own man” General Hamidu said emotionally at a press conference last Wednesday in Accra.

According to him, this statement was prompted by Professor Mills’ claim that he would be knocking at the door of President Rawlings, morning, afternoon and in the evening for advice when he, the Vice President, takes over the mantle of leadership from next year.

Referring to President Rawlings as a dictator who wished he would always remain in power, General Hamidu said, “Now that his tenure of office is coming to an end, the most recent threat of President Rawlings is directed at the very man he himself has hand-picked to be the flagbearer of the PNDC/NDC Party”.

Continuing, he said the President has explicitly stated that he would be very much around and in charge, long after the forthcoming December elections, and reminded Prof. Mills that “you are equal to the task, without having to make one who has failed Ghana during the past 20 years, your mentor”.

Reacting to President Rawlings’ recent statement that after leaving office, among his prospective activities would be to “police all of us and the gains of his regime”, the Retired General advised all Presidential aspirants in the coming elections to come together and form a Government of national reconciliation.

He said, that’s the only way in which President Rawlings will never be given any future opportunity to “police us and the gains of his regime”.

Touching on the military, he noted that JJ Rawlings has successfully destroyed the esprit de corps of the army by establishing a private army of Commandos named the 64th Battalion and advised forces of the Battalion who, according to him, are better resourced and remunerated, not to allow themselves to be misused “to perpetuate the one man and his family in power”.

Addressing the 64th battalion, he said “a look around for his collaborators in treachery from 1979 to date, should provoke you to ask the question: Where are they all?” And advised that with the impending ending of Rawlings’ tenure, there is the need for a plan to absorb and integrate them into the Armed Forces.

Speaking on events that preceded his going into exile, Hamidu, who returned to Ghana in May, this year, after 20 years in exile, revealed that, in actual fact, the chairman of the AFRC then, Flight Lieutenant J. J. Rawlings and a few of his colleagues in the AFRC did not want to hand over power to the democratically- elected Government of the 3rd Republic.

He said, indeed, even on the morning of 24th September, 1979, the day scheduled for the handing over ceremony, the function was 45 minutes late in starting, because J. J. Rawlings and a few of his colleagues refused to turn up at Parliament House for the occasion.

“I had to send the Minister for National Security to go and persuade them to come to Parliament House where the world press and the Ghanaian press, Diplomats and all invited guests were seated, waiting for this momentous handing- over to take place” Hamidu stated.

He said, it was later he was informed that Rawlings finished wearing his uniform in the Pinzgauer vehicle while proceeding from Burma Camp.

“Between 1966 and 1969, we had the military liberators. They didn’t liberate our country. From 1972 to 1979, we had the military redeemers. They did not redeem our country. And, from 1982 to date, we have had the military defenders who later wrapped themselves with a thin veneer of civilian democratic credentials. Only the clothing of the boss has been demilitarized, but not his mind. These defenders have only temporarily convinced themselves as having so far been effective in defending only their misdeeds and not the rights of our people,” the former Chief of the Defence Staff stated.

According to him, the President has sown some awesome seeds of destruction, disintegration and potential anarchy that can make the country ungovernable.

“He seems to be oblivious to the immutable natural law that ‘we always reap what we sow’. We, the Ghanaian people, must never again permit violence, anarchy and mayhem in this land,” he added.

He went on to entreat students and the youth of the country to pursue excellence in order not to become casualties like their predecessors, twenty years ago, who were used to support what was not and has never been in the interest of the country, adding that “the unfolding globalised world is ruthlessly competitive and demands the best of every citizen of our world.”

Responding to questions from the media concerning the possibility of his joining the political race, Gen. Hamidu said he didn’t have the resources and, even if he did, it would be too late to form a political party.
