  • Jeremy Doku: Belgian teen Klopp wanted to succeed Mane at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp certainly has an eye for a player.

The Liverpool boss has helped put together one of Europe’s great teams on Merseyside, though the majority of his signings were regarded as players with potential when they arrived at Anfield, rather than world-beaters.

The German coach has done an outstanding job in coaxing the very best out of his Premier League-winning squad. But he, along with Liverpool’s much-vaunted recruitment team, must also be credited with being able to spot the potential gems in the market.

And getting a glowing reference from the Reds boss is every young player’s dream. That is exactly what happened to Jeremy Doku when he visited Liverpool’s Melwood training ground in 2018.

The then-16-year-old was visiting the club as he considered his options ahead of signing his first professional contract later that season. That was when Klopp made his pitch.

“Klopp explained how he saw a potential successor to Sadio Mane in Jeremy,” Doku’s father, David, told Het Nieuwsblad in an interview during which he explained just how welcoming Liverpool had been as they attempted to convince the teenage winger to join them.

“At the age of 16, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Ajax and PSV were interested. We then visited clubs like Liverpool and Ajax. My preference was Liverpool.

“Steven Gerrard showed us videos with tactical analysis. At the training complex [Simon] Mignolet, Mane and [Georginio] Wijnaldum came to talk to us. How we were received there – damn!”

Despite Liverpool’s eagerness to bring Doku to England, he instead opted to stay with boyhood club Anderlecht, though it needed the intervention of a player who, at the time, was plying his trade for Manchester United to finally help make his mind up.

“[Former Anderlecht general manager, Herman] Van Holsbeeck was convinced that he would lose Jeremy to Liverpool for almost nothing,” Doku Sr. explains. “But Anderlecht did everything to keep our son.

“They got smart with a video from Romelu Lukaku. As Jeremy hesitated to leave, that took away his final doubt.

“It was an idea of ??youth director Jean Kindermans. Romelu said in the video that it was better to break through in Belgium first and then leave through the main gates.”

Lukaku did just that during his youth in Belgium, and now Doku is aiming to follow in his footsteps after an impressive first full season in the senior ranks at Lotto Park.

Having joined the 34-time Belgian champions as a 10-year-old from his local club in Antwerp, Doku made his first-team debut as a substitute for the final 12 minutes of a 4-2 defeat to Sint-Truiden in November 2018.

That would be the first of six appearances over the course of the 2018-19 campaign, which ended with him playing the final 22 minutes of his side’s play-off defeat to Gent.

The summer of 2019 saw Vincent Kompany take over the managerial reins, and after impressing in pre-season, Doku was handed a start in each of the legendary centre-back’s first three league matches in charge.

But with Anderlecht struggling to adapt to their new player-coach, Doku soon found himself out of favour, with the tricky wideman limited to short cameos off the bench and reserve-team appearances to maintain his match fitness.

Four goals in three games for the reserves saw Doku reinstated to Kompany’s matchday squad in December, and after scoring and assisting in a 32-minute appearance against Oostende, he has been a regular starter ever since.

Playing predominantly off his favoured right-hand side, Doku made 24 appearances across all competitions before the 2019-20 campaign was curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic.

In what turned out to be his final match of the campaign he scored two goals himself and laid on a third in a 7-0 win over Zulte Waregem, taking his tally for the season to four goals and three assists.

A skilful dribbler who is comfortable on either flank, Doku has been compared to Raheem Sterling in some quarters, though it is felt he needs to work on his two-footedness to fully reach his potential.

There is even a school of thought within Belgium that he could become Eden Hazard’s long-term successor in the national team as the Red Devils begin to prepare for life after their ‘Golden Generation’ have moved on.

“I have rarely seen a player with so much explosiveness in the first metres, who can accelerate so quickly and change direction, while also maintaining perfect control of his body and the ball,” former Anderlecht manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck told Het Nieuwsblad when asked to assess Doku.

    Jeremy Doku NxGn GFX
“His left foot is currently just mostly to lean on. There is still a lot of work to do. Defenders now know that they should not cover his left, that they can let him cross with it. If he perfects his left [foot], he is fully capable of reaching the top.

“Then he will even surpass Hazard in terms of potential. But that’s [something that needs] training, training, training. Hazard is 11 years older, give him time.”

Already capped four times at Under-21 level, Belgium manager Roberto Martinez is understood to be a fan of Doku’s having watched him in the flesh while he played at the 2019 U17 European Championships in Ireland.

There remain some hopes that the 18-year-old could still opt to play his international football for Ghana, leading to reports suggesting that Doku may even earn a call-up to Martinez’s squad in the autumn should he pick up where he left off next season.

Whether he will still be playing for Anderlecht by then remains up in the air. Liverpool continue to be linked with signing him while Real Madrid, Manchester United, AC Milan and Newcastle have also been mooted as possible destinations.

Doku’s current contract runs until 2022, and despite being rated as a €20 million (£18m/$23m) player before Covid-19 turned football on its head, there have been suggestions – not least from his agent – that he could be snapped up for far less this summer if he indeed is willing to move.

“He is happy here with us in Antwerp. He will stay with his parents for another two to three years,” his father, David, told Gazet van Antwerpen in May, though he was not totally dismissive when the subject of his son moving on from Anderlecht was brought up.

“That [a transfer] is a difficult question, isn’t it? He feels great at Anderlecht, but you can never rule it out.”

Whether it comes this summer or not, it is only a matter of time before Doku does fly the nest.

It would not be a surprise if it is Klopp who lands the player he saw as Mane’s successor, either. The Liverpool boss tends to find a way.

  • Government didn’t reopen schools to win votes, we believe in our track record Sammi Awuku

The National Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku has debunked claims that the government reopened schools in order to garner votes from the students.

According to him, although the free SHS policy of the government gives President Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP an upperhand over opposition parties, it however doesn’t absolutely guarantee that all beneficiaries will vote for the President in the upcoming December polls.

Sammi Awuku, speaking on Joy News, stated; “Though we may stand in an advantageous position because we thought about these young ones and their parents and brought this project, we believe we also have to compete and work hard for their votes.”

He believed the government’s set of developmental initiatives and programmes will earn them a second term.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), in a press conference, called for the closure of all Senior High Schools claiming the schools were reopened to give opportunity to the Electoral Commission to register them in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

The opposition party claims the EC wants to rig the 2020 elections in favour of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

A number of Senior High Schools have also reported COVID-19 cases but the government insists the situation is under control, hence not paying heed to calls by the opposition party to close the schools.

Mr Awuku doesn’t believe the government’s intention to let the students remain in their schools amidst the COVID-19 is engineered by their desire to win the elections.

To him, to win or not to win the elections will primarily be based on the track record of both the NPP and NDC.

He however urged the youth to vote massively for the Akufo-Addo administration.

  • Biometric Voter Registration kits are brand new – EC

The Electoral Commission on Thursday, July 16, 2020, said the Biometric Voter Registration kits currently in use are new and not old as being speculated.

A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said the new Kits were completely different from the old kits in terms of look, appearance and functionality.

Comparing the two, it said the new ones were smaller than the old, with three handles while the old kit had one.

The new kits have an identification number and QR Code and cannot be removed from the case while the old version has no ID number and is removable.

The statement said the new kits could print daily number of registrants making data collection easy and had charging point in front with two led alert lights but the old one had none of those features.

“For the information of the public, all the Kits being used for the registration exercise are brand new. There is not a single old absolute Kit in the field,” the statement said.

It said as part of its procurement of a new Biometric Voter Management System it bought 8,500 Biometric Voter Registration Kits and all had been deployed onto the field.

It said it was untrue the assertion by some individuals that 40 per cent of the BVR Kits being used were old.

The Voters Registration Exercise, which began on June 30 and would end on August 6, is in the third phase and had registered more than 4.5 million applicants.

The registration is being held in over 3,000 centres and expected to register about 15 million eligible applicants.

  • National House of Chiefs urged to intervene in Doba-Kandiga dispute

The youth of Doba have appealed to the National House of Chiefs to set up a committee of eminent people to intervene in the land dispute between the people of Doba in the Kassena-Nankana Municipal and Kandiga in the Kassena-Nankana West District in Upper East Region.

This, the youth said, would bring finality to the matter and promote peaceful co-existence between the two communities.

A statement signed by Mr Clement Anontara, the spokesperson of the group, also appealed to the Regional House of Chiefs to call on people suspected to be encouraging the conflict, to desist from the act, to pave the way for peace in the area.

They also called on the security agencies and the court to ensure that the perpetrators of the conflict, especially those caught with sophisticated weapons during the conflict were prosecuted.

The statement called on the Kandiga Youth to remember the cordial relationship that exists between the two communities and not to allow themselves to be used to foment trouble and cause disunity.

Currently, there is a joint military and police presence at the two communities maintaining law and order.

In April, 2020, a communal conflict ensued between the two communities over the rightful owners of a piece of land at Akonkongo-Abempengo Electoral Area, where a Police post and a Community-based Health Planning and Service (CHPS) compound were being constructed.

The Effutu Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has advised people who think that swimming in the sea will protect them from the Coronavirus (COVID-19) to shun the false idea.

“For one to stay safe and alive, they must strictly adhere to the laid down health and safety protocols and directives given to help fight the pandemic, which globally has no vaccine up-to-date.”

Mr. Joseph Abban, the Effutu Municipal Director of NCCE, made the call during the on-going campaign at market places, lorry station, communities, beaches and on the principal street of the municipality.

Mr.Abban said the campaign was to deepen public awareness about the prevention and management of the coronavirus, including government measures and directives to tackle the growing challenges of stigmatisation and to encourage the citizenry to adopt healthy lifestyles.

The programme was in collaboration with the Effutu Assembly, Red Cross Society and the Ministry of Health and the COVID-19 Logistics and Response team in the area to win the war against the pandemic.

Mr. Abban urged Ghanaians to change their attitude and join the fight against COVID-19 as a civic responsibility to halt the spread of the virus.

“COVID-19 is real, let us not play with our lives and destiny; your family needs you and Ghana needs you alive for us to work together towards the development of the country,” he said.

In an interview on the sidelines of the campaign, Mr. Abban expressed concern about the indifferent attitude of many people in the communities because of the perception that the virus could be destroyed by seawater.

He said because of the belief the wearing of nose mask, the observance of social and physical distancing and the washing of hands frequently were not being observed in the Municipality, despite the ongoing education to help stop the spread of the virus.

He urged the people to follow the protocols, eat nutritious meals and exercise their bodies regularly to prevent the infection.

Some fishmongers and fishermen in the Winneba Township appealed to the Assembly to support vulnerable individuals living at the beaches with PPEs.

They also called on the law enforcement agencies to administer the protocols with minimum force to help stop the spread of the pandemic.

  • Kenya court orders $12m payout for lead poisoning

A Kenyan judge has awarded $12m ($9.6m) to a community that suffered from lead poisoning from a battery smelting plant.

The court case came about as a result of work done by Phyllis Omido, a resident of the slum settlement of Owino Uhuru, which is in Mombasa on Kenya’s coast.

As an employee at the plant, she was inspired to act after her baby son was diagnosed with lead poisoning.

Her young son became very ill after she had been working at the plant for three months.

After tests, doctors discovered that he was suffering from lead poisoning that could have been passed through his mother’s breast milk.

She found that other community members had similar problems and finally got the plant shut down in 2014.

But Ms Omido went to court in 2016 to get the government to clean up the area and pay compensation to the families of those who had died or were made sick from the lead.

As well as the money, Justice Ann Omollo ordered the authorities to get rid of the remaining lead, the Daily Nation reports.

Journalist John-Allan Namu, who has been following the case, says that various government agencies will have to fund most of the $12m pay out.

  • Over exploitation of biodiversity cause of disease outbreaks

The over-exploitation of the natural environment and destruction of biodiversity are among the major causes of the outbreak of many infectious diseases in the world.

Mr. David Kwarteng, an Environmentalist, said excessive bush burning, illegal logging and mining, pollution, hunting for game and other destructive activities on the natural environment, were the main factors responsible for the outbreak of many deadly infectious diseases, including the coronavirus.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Kumasi, he said studies showed that pollution alone was the cause of many major diseases, some potentially fatal.

Mr Kwarteng mentioned some of the diseases caused by excessive pollution as asthma, cancers, neurodevelopmental disorders, birth defects in children, heart and lungs diseases and stroke.

He cited the current outbreak of the novel coronavirus, which was believed to have been triggered by human activities in Wuhan, China and said studies indicated strong linkages between environmental destruction caused by human actions and diseases.

“Most communicable infections like Ebola, HIV/AIDS, and currently, the COVID-19 have linkages to human actions on biodiversity”, he stated, adding that, “these are often as a result of over exploitation or the speed over effect on nature.”

Mr Kwarteng said it was time mankind co-existed peacefully with nature to avoid deadly infections.

“In order to ensure that the present crisis of COVID-19 is cured and future happenings prevented, society must transition to a more just and equitable society where humans co-exist harmoniously with nature,” he said.

Mr Kwarteng, who is also the Director of the Institute of Nature and Environmental Conservation (INEC), an NGO focusing on preservation and protection of plants, said the culture of tree planting, afforestation, land reclamation and restoration, wildlife conservation and plastic waste management should be embraced by all.

This, he believed, was one of the surest ways to ensure climate mitigation as well as sustaining human lives in the wake of pandemics such as COVID-19.

He called for a national action on trading of illegal bushmeat to curtail some underlined effects of consumption on human health.

Mr. Kwarteng said it was worth noting that China, which had one of the biggest bush meat markets worldwide, had closed its markets to reduce transmissions of such diseases from animals to humans.

  • WHO, UNICEF warn against drop in vaccinations due to coronavirus outbreak

Levels of childhood immunisations against dangerous diseases such as measles, tetanus and diphtheria have dropped alarmingly during the COVID-19 pandemic, putting millions of children at risk, United Nations agencies said on Wednesday.

“The avoidable suffering and death caused by children missing out on routine immunisations could be far greater than COVID-19 itself,” World Health Organization (WHO) director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a joint report with UNICEF.

Three-quarters of the 82 countries that responded to a survey for the report said they had suffered coronavirus-related disruptions to their immunisation programmes as of May 2020.

Most problems were linked to a lack of sufficient personal protection equipment (PPE) for health workers, travel restrictions, and low health worker staffing levels all of which led to immunisation services being curbed or shut down.

At least 30 measles vaccination campaigns have been or are at risk of being cancelled, threatening new outbreaks of the contagious viral disease this year and beyond, the report said.

Measles outbreaks were already on the rise, infecting nearly 10 million people in 2018 and killing 140,000 of them mostly children, according to WHO data.

For diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, preliminary data for the first four months of 2020 “points to a substantial drop” in the number of children getting all three doses of the DTP vaccine that protects against them, the report said the first time in 28 years that the world could see a fall in coverage for this routine childhood immunisation.

Data for 2019 showed that nearly 14 million children worldwide missed out on life-saving vaccines. Most of these children live in Africa and are likely to lack access to other health services, the report said.

It said progress on immunisation was already stalling before the new coronavirus emerged and spread around the world, but the pandemic made a bad situation worse.

The Commission added in a statement that “as such, applicants will be verified using their fingerprints and/or faces.”

  • Coronavirus: Recovered Education Minister leads anti-stigma campaign

Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has launched a campaign for an end to the stigmatisation of people who have recovered from COVID-19.

In a Facebook post featuring images of some of his staff who contracted the disease and have since recovered, the Minister called for a fight not only against the disease but the negative stereotypes around it.

“Those who survive it have a story to tell, and it is not a pretty one. We must not make it worse for them by stigmatizing and then ostracizing them,” he declared.

Posing alongside his recovered team members in customised polo T-shirts with the inscription “I HAVE BEEN ATTACKED BY COVID-19. I HAVE SURVIVED IT AND FULLY RECOVERED”, Dr Prempeh said he was proud of them, and declared, “Thank God we beat it. Today, we say No to Stigmatisation.”

It will be recalled that in recent times, Dr. Prempeh has granted interviews to various media houses during which he spoke extensively about his experiences whilst on admission in hospital for the disease, describing it as something he would never wish on his worst enemy.

He also emphasized the importance of abiding by the hygiene and social distancing protocols, stressing that he did abide by them religiously and yet caught it.

It is expected that the bold decision by the Minister to stand up publicly to fight stigmatisation along with his team will further bolster the efforts of the government even further.

Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Kwasi Obeng-Fosu, confirmed that the Education Minister is leading a campaign against stigmatising people who have been infected with the novel coronavirus.

Mr Obeng-Fosu also contracted the virus but has now recovered.

He extended this call to friends and family of the SHS students who have also recovered from the disease to extend affection towards them.

“I was playing with my younger brother when I visited the washroom. Upon my return I realised that my brother was nowhere to be found,” the sister of Kofi Anokye, Akosua said to the disappearance of her one-and-half-year-old brother.

She had initially told Angel FM reporter, Odehye Kwaku Asiedu, that her brother was kidnapped.

She had claimed seeing a man with a sack loitering around the area but the sack looked heavier with something “shaking” inside it upon her return from the washroom.

The assembly man of the Gbawe Electoral Area, Andy Oppong, said he got angry when he visited the scene due to the numerous uncovered manholes filled with water around the area.

“When I came and saw the manhole, I told them this was a deathtrap because children live in nearby houses and they come out to play here,” he stated.

Mr. Oppong tasked the Municipal Assembly to ensure all “deadly manholes” in the area are either covered or destroyed.

He also pleaded with parents to be extra vigilant in taking care of their children to prevent such occurrences in the near future.

Mr. George Obeng, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Manso Nkwanta, is upbeat about accelerated development in the area, saying he has a comprehensive strategy to improve the lives of the people.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that there were huge potentials in the constituency that could be harnessed to build a prosperous Manso Nkwanta and to project its image to attract the needed investments.

He said though mining and agriculture were the mainstay of the local economy, activities of illegal miners had over the years dented the image of the constituency, adding that it was time to change the narrative.

“I am committed to engaging relevant state institutions to regulate mining activities of the indigenes and halt the invasion of people from outside the constituency to prevent the indiscriminate land degradation”, he said.

To ensure sustainable and environmental-friendly mining, the parliamentary candidate intends to acquire simple technologies for the youth with the approval of the regulators of the industry.

“With such technologies the people can mine for a living and boost the local economy while protecting the environment,” he said.

Mr. Obeng said by empowering the locals to go into environmental- friendly mining, they would be in the position to protect their lands from destruction by outsiders whose sole interest was to make profit at the expense of the environment.

The aspirant, who is a lecturer at the Kumasi Campus of the University of Education, Winneba, also seeks to invest in technical and vocational education in the constituency.

He said skills acquisition by the youth was critical to the development of the area and promised to prioritize it by strengthening existing technical schools in the constituency.

He entreated the people to go out and register in the on-going registration exercise and to vote massively for the NPP to make his vision for the constituency a reality.

  • Registration exercise: Fight for your safety at registration centres – NDC supporters told

The National Youth Organizer of the NDC, George Opare Addo, has urged his party members, especially the youth to put their safety into their own hands at the various polling stations of the ongoing registration exercise.

According to him, efforts to have the police ensure safety at the various registration centres have proved quite difficult.

Speaking on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ programme, he explained that what happened at the Banda constituency which led to the death of one person clearly shows that the security agencies have failed to provide and ensure the safety of people registering for their ID cards.

“We have therefore asked our people to protect themselves, however, they can at the registration centre.”

“However, they should be law-abiding and not engage in any violent act that will disrupt the exercise which albeit has been peaceful,” he said.

“We have suffered enough intimidation and unnecessary violence for too long and cannot look on just like that whilst our members are attacked,” he added.

The party has also given the police a 72-hour ultimatum to arrest the killers of the 28-year-old teacher trainee from the Methodist College of Education in the Eastern region.

Silas Wulochamey was killed by persons believed to be NPP supporters following a polling centre impasse.

“Up to date, the killers of Silas have not been arrested. We demand within 72 hrs the apprehension of those who killed him else we will take action by ourselves to look for the hooligans,” he said.

  • EC padding figures, a figment of NDC’s imagination – Atik Mohammed

PNC General Secretary, Atik Mohammed has jumped to the defence of the Electoral Commission (EC) over claims by some National Democratic Congress (NDC) members that the Commission is “padding figures” in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

According to them, in some registration centres, the registrant numbers exceed those who actually queued up to register and therefore accuse the EC of cooking figures with the aim of rigging the 2020 elections.

It could be recalled that, before the commencement of the registration exercise, the NDC had accused the EC of conniving with the National Identification Authority (NIA) to rig the elections for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his NPP government.

The party further accused the Electoral Management Body of trying to disenfranchise some eligible Ghanaians and even went to court to stop the exercise but the Supreme Court overruled their legal requests giving the EC the green light to conduct the exercise.

However, it appears the EC Chairpersons’ nightmares are not over as the party has raised numerous concerns over the exercise and one of them is that the Commission is tampering with the figures.

Addressing the issue on ‘Kokrokoo’ on Peace FM, Atik Mohammed stressed that the ”padded figures” claims are only a figment of the imagination by the political opponents.

He cautioned them to stop peddling falsehood about the EC.

“Sometimes, we exaggerate episodes with the view to winning some political capital but it doesn’t help in the long view. To say that the Electoral Commission is padding figures . . . it means they have added non-existing numbers to the figures they recorded but it is far from the truth . . . Sometimes, we have some pet words but if you want to use your pet words, you need to be circumspect and assess your choice of words whether or not it will be disturbing. Because the person is just crazy about the word ‘pad’, so he wants to use the word ‘padded’ but your excitement to use your pet words can have some unintended outcomes. So, it is not true that the Electoral Commission padded figures,” he stated.

He also strongly held that the current EC esteems the transparency of the process and will do no such thing as rigging the exercise or elections.

“The Electoral Commission has created a transparency regime relative to this registration that every Monday and every, I think, Wednesday; they will hold a seminar to update Ghanaians about what’s going on. There is nothing to hide . . . And they have also made it clear that if you have any concerns, send it for them to address it. Someone who wants to steal from you needs no permission from you.”

”If the Electoral Commission wants to rig ballots or rig the registration, which I don’t even understand how that could happen but if they had an ill motive, why would they want to engage the public? Why would they want to update the public on what’s happening?” he further questioned.

  • EC registration exercise isn’t war, stop ‘killing’ people – Mireku Duker

Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem constituency, George Mireku Duker has advised Ghanaians participating in the ongoing registration exercise to desist from engaging in violence.

Hon. George Mireku Duker expressed bitter worry over recent clashes at a registration center in the Bono Region.

One person was reportedly killed in Banda in the Bono Region days ago after some persons associated with the NPP Parliamentary candidate for the constituency, according to sources, had physical confrontations with a brother of the Member of Parliament for the area, Ahmed Ibrahim, over undisclosed reasons.

The deceased is said to be a teacher training graduate who was returning to the area to inform his parent about his completion of studies and was innocently embroiled in the scuffle.

Police personnel guarding the registration center also reportedly sustained injuries from the clashes.

Addressing the issue on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ on Thursday, Hon. Mireku Duker questioned why any person should lose his or her life over the registration exercise and reiterated that if any person has reason to believe a participant is not a Ghanaian, he or she can dispute the person’s nationality by picking a challenge form at the centre.

“The registration is not war. When someone comes and is not a Ghanaian, challenge him. There are challenge forms there; that is the most important thing. You challenge the person; you don’t fight the person. But to hear that someone has pulled a knife and stabbed somebody, what is all this? We need to develop. We need to grow as a nation,” he emphasized.

  • EC must address registration challenges – GFL

Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has called on the Electoral Commission(EC) to address challenges arising from the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise.

The exercise, which was in its third phase, commenced on June 30, 2020, and expected to end on August 6, 2020, would replace the existing register which had been described as bloated and not good enough.

Mr Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the GFL, told the Ghana News Agency that his outfit foresaw such challenges and cautioned the EC but they did not listen.

Mr Koomson added that “obviously the ongoing exercise is fraught with serious problems of duplication and multiple registration. Malfunction of equipment has been widely reported and causing undue delays in registration centres”.

He said the purpose and reasons given by the EC to justify the compilation of a new register had been woefully defeated considering the massive protestations, violence and fatalities associated with the exercise.

“We wonder whether all eligible citizens will be able to register by the deadline of 6th August 2020 to enable them participate in the 7th December 2020 general elections, ”he added.

The GFA called for more registration machines, increase the number of registration centres as well as if possible, extend the date to prevent unnecessary delay which they said was the cause of long queues, delays, and violence at the various centres across the country.

According to the GFL, failure on the part of the EC to immediately address the challenges and put in proper measures could lead to intensified protestations if people were not able to register by the deadline through no fault of theirs.

  • GBC cannot reduce channels Director-General

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) says it cannot half its channels of broadcasting from six to three on the National Digital Terrestrial Television platform as directed by the Communications Minister.

In a letter to the National Media Commission (NMC), Director-General of the state broadcaster Prof. Amin Alhassan said all six channels serve specific purposes, therefore, none can be taken off.

Giving a breakdown of their uses, Prof Alhassan said all six channels are dedicated 24-hours channels with “specified focus reflecting the mandate of GBC as a State Broadcaster, a Public Service Broadcaster and a Commercial Broadcaster.”

In view of this, GBC is “unable to respond to the request of the Hon. Minister of Communication,” the letter indicated.

The directive from the Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful indicated that the intention to reduce the number of channels GBC currently operates is to ensure “there is enough redundancy on the national Digital Terrestrial Television platform which is currently at full capacity.”

The letter added that “you will, therefore, be required to consolidate your programming in line with this directive,” adding “please take steps to implement this directive within 60 days of receipt of this letter.”

It further stated that after the planned future expansion of capacity on the network, which has been delayed by the pandemic and the uncertainties generated in global supply chains, the GBC will be allocated additional channels.

But GBC says none of their six channels can be taken off.

GBC currently operates GTV, GBC News, GTV Sports+, GBC Obonu, GTV Life and Ghana Learning TV.

Director-General, Prof Alhassan says complying to the request by the Minister means GBC has to lose three of these channels.

“It will virtually mean that GBC will have to reduce its operations by half. This request will also impose serious budgetary and human resource challenges on the operations of GBC and indeed, can collapse the Public Service Broadcaster.

“It is with these implications in mind that the Board of Directors has instructed me to communicate this to the National Media Commission and request your urgent intervention on behalf of GBC,” the letter added.

Prof Alhassan added that GBC Board expects the NMC to intervene to save the State Broadcaster from the consequences of having to operate with only three channels.

Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram Samuel George

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament is up in arms against the Communications Ministry over the directive.

The NDC legislators argue the notice to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation is wrong on many levels, one of them being the source of the notice.

Minority spokesperson on Communications, Sam George, speaking to the media in Parliament, argued the GBC is under the purview of the Ministry of Information and not the Ministry of Communication.

The notice coming from Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, to him, is therefore unacceptable.

  • NCCE embarks on advocacy for good environmental governance, others

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is jointly championing the course of good governance and accountability with UN, EU under the program, “Accountability, Rule of Law and Anti-corruption Program(ARAP)” which is aimed at promoting good governance, reducing corruption, ensuring compliance of rule of law and increase accountability.

Madam Rosina Owoo, Offinso North district director disclosed this on the Cruz’s “kokrokoo morning show annex” on Wednesday in Akumadan indicating that, Ghana’s focus is on how to promote environmental governance in this covid era. ” under the ARAP, we also have NACAP, National Anti Corruption Action Plan” now when you talk of good governance, environmental governance or good sanitation management is part of it and that is where we are focusing now in this covid-19 season”

“We are currently advocating for good environmental governance. As the world have been stormed by this pandemic, how sanity is our environment? How do we properly apply the hygiene protocols of the disease?” Miss Owoo explained further to SK De Broadcaster.

She continued to cite the appropriate usage of PPEs, hand gloves, face masks, the disposable ones, and our general attitude towards sanitation in our environment, offices, public buses etc are matters of priority for the commission to enlighten the public.

Coupling the ARAP campaign with the ongoing voters registration exercise, the NCCE director says her outfit is well poised in carrying out mandate but less equipped to efficiently deliver. “The Assembly have done well by recently providing us with a megaphone to help our course, we lack a vehicle in order to access more villages to educate more on the pandemic and matters relating to the voters registration exercise” currently in its third phase.

She said however the four staffed office in the district, one being a national service personnel is not giving up as it explores all means of effectively given the needed education to the people of Offinso North.

Miss Owoo seized the opportunity to appeal to the general public especially Offinso north to seriously stick to the safety protocols as protection against the covid-19 pandemic and caution others to refrain from stigmatization as that undermines our quest to contain it.

Additionally, she urged people of voting age to partake in the registration exercise while discouraging the attitude of fielding under agers to register saying ” if you falsely increase your age because of voting today, it would affect you in future and so its better you desist from that habit” Madam Rosina Owoo, Offinso north NCCE Director concluded.

  • Christian Atsu warms bench as Newcastle loses to Tottenham

Ghana international Christian Atsu was left to warm the bench on Wednesday evening when his Newcastle United side lost 3-1 at home to Tottenham Hotspurs.

The Black Stars winger looks to have significantly fallen down the pecking order at his club with his manager Steve Bruce constantly leaving him on the bench.

Today he missed out on a starting role when the Magpies hosted the Lillie Whites at the St James’ Park.

A good showing from Tottenham Hotspurs on the evening saw the side going into the first half break with a 1-goal lead courtesy a strike from Heung-Min Son on the 27th minute after he was assisted by Giovani Lo Celso.

Though Newcastle United will return from the break to level the score on the 56th minute through a strike from Matt Ritchie, a brace from English striker Harry Kane, later on, ensured that Jose Mourinho earned his first away win at Newcastle United.

Christian Atsu who was named as a substitute for the Magpies on the matchday was not introduced.

This season, the 28-year-old has made 19 appearances for his team and has 3 assists to his name.

  • Asante Kotoko can get some compensation from the NIC – Peter Eshun

The Head of Supervision, National Insurance Commission (NIC), Peter Eshun, has told Happy Sports that Asante Kotoko team involved in the car crash three years ago can get some compensation from the NIC motor compensation fund.

According to him, people involved in accidents whereby the vehicles are not insured can receive some funds if only they are able to provide the necessary documentation.

Peter Eshun made this assertion on Wamputu Sports when asked whether the Asante Kotoko team involved in that accident could get any form of compensation after it was later revealed that the bus they were travelling in had no insurance.

“Every year we take some monies from insurance companies in the country so that when somebody gets an accident they can get something from the Motor compensation fund.

“So in the case of Asante Kotoko, they should call upon the motor compensation fund to get something from it. But it comes with some conditions if not everybody who gets an accident will want to get a fund. They will have to provide some documentation including medical and police reports and others before they can access the fund”, he told Odiasempa Kwame Oware.

“We must all make sure that all our cars are insured. If you go and sit in a trotro u can now check whether if it has insurance or not”, he advised.

  • Huge financial protection for clubs as GFA put players and staff on mandatory insurance policy

Football players in Ghana are expected to get a historic financial protection with the Ghana Football Association set to enroll the principal actors on the National Health Insurance Policy in the West African nation, GHANAsoccernet.com can report.

A combined 3,500 players and staff from the Premier League, Division One and the Women’s Premier League will benefit from the mandatory insurance cover.

The laudable initiative, which will cost the Ghana FA a substantial amount of money, will see players, technical staff and management members enrolled on the policy.

Each clubs will be required not to register more than 50 personnel – who will benefit from the lifetime package on the domestic front.

The Ghana Football Association has set aside $26,000 for registration and other logistical activities of the beneficiaries.

This will be a monumental heave of sigh relief for clubs who have struggled to enroll their staff on the National Health Insurance Scheme – and have risked being sanctioned by the state authorities over the years.

While the FA shoulder some of the financial responsibilities on clubs, taken off the cost involved in the insurance cover of their staff has come timely amid coronavirus shutdown that has wrecked local football.
