  • Statue of UK slave merchant replaced with Black Lives Matter protester

The statue of a slave trader that was torn down and thrown into a river last month in Bristol, England, was replaced overnight by a sculpture of a Black Lives Matter protester with a fist raised to the sky.

The new statue of Jen Reid, who helped pull down the statue of 17th-century slave merchant Edward Colston in June and was photographed in the same pose, was secretly installed by the team of artist Marc Quinn at dawn on Wednesday.

A cardboard sign saying “Black lives still matter” was placed beneath the work, which the artist titled “A surge of power (Jen Reid) 2020.”

Quinn and Reid, who collaborated on the work, have said the installation was intended to be temporary.

  • Ethiopian minister denies ‘dam filling’ comment

The filing of the controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has not begun, Ethiopia’s Water Minister Sileshi Bekele has told the Associated Reports (AP), denying earlier reports attributed to him.

He had been quoted as telling the state broadcaster that the latest satellite images showing water levels rising at the dam was as a result of the filling, reports said.

However, Mr Sileshi has now told AP that the images reflected water collected after heavy rains and that the inflow was greater than the outflow.

Ethiopia sees the hydro-electric project as crucial for its economic growth.

But Egypt and Sudan, which are downstream, fear the large dam will greatly reduce their access to water.

Years of fraught negotiations have failed to reach a consensus on how and when to fill the reservoir, and how much water it should release.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has previously warned that filling and operating the dam without an agreement “would heighten tensions and could provoke crises and conflicts that further destabilise an already troubled region”.

A conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia, which are both US allies, would put millions of civilians at risk.

  • Stop ‘body-shaming’ yourselves – MzGee to female artistes

Fast-rising Entertainment Journalist Gloria Akpene Acquah a.k.a MzGee has advised female artistes to stop using their music to body-shame and insult themselves.

She was responding to the recent clash between singer Sista Afia and rapper Freda Rhymz which nearly resulted in fisticuffs when the two musicians met at the premises of TV3.

The two female artistes had been bashing each other in a rap battle but something that began as a healthy exchange of lyrical dexterity turned into a physical confrontation after they both felt insulted by the other.

Speaking in an interview with Nkonkonsa.com, MzGee opined that the female rappers’ use of insults on one another doesn’t help to project their music and therefore called on them to engage in healthy lyrical battle that will entertain their music lovers as well as profit their music careers.

To her, she doesn’t have a favourite female artiste but she believes they will be able to be on a par with the best in Ghana’s music industry if only they stop being their own enemies.

”I love all of them. I am proud of what they’re doing but let’s put the insults aside and have a healthy [you know] lyrical wall. Because I believe that, with what’s happening, some people will be getting gigs out of it. Some people might even get some recognitions out of it. I’m sure some of them nobody knew that they even existed…I am all for healthy competition”, she said.

  • Millions of children miss key vaccinations

Nearly 14 million children globally were not immunised against preventable illnesses last year, according to a joint report by two UN agencies: WHO and Unicef.

More than half of these children are in Africa with those living in countries in conflict being the most affected, Dr Robin Nandy, chief of immunisation at Unicef, told the BBC.

“Some of the missed vaccines are against [diseases like]: polio; measles; meningitis; diphtheria; tetanus and whooping cough. Of greater concern to us are children who have not been immunised against measles,” Dr Nandy said.

Children living in remote rural areas and urban slums are also said to be vulnerable.

Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Chad, Central African Republic and South Sudan are some of the African countries with high numbers of children who have not been vaccinated.

The report also warns that the number of children likely to miss vaccinations this year could double as a result of disruption to immunisation services due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In March, the WHO advised countries to temporarily suspend mass vaccination campaigns, until effective measures for reducing Covid-19 transmission were established.

So far, Angola, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso are among the few countries that have resumed mass vaccinations following strict guidelines.

  • I didnt campaign in Senior High Schools I visited Nana B

The National Youth Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has defended his decision to visit some Senior High Schools in the country despite a directive from the Ghana Education Service banning all such visits.

Nana Boakye has come under fire after a photo of him interacting with some SHS students went viral.

But speaking to journalists on the matter in Kumasi, Nana B denied any wrongdoing.

He insisted that he visited the schools to monitor the registration exercise being held in the various Senior High School.

He added that he was appropriately accredited to monitor the exercise by the Electoral Commission.

“For the records, I never campaigned in any of the schools I visited. I visited these schools as an accredited party official and I received the official accreditation from the Electoral Commission. Indeed, all political parties obtained the official accreditation from the EC and some NDC members also visited the SHS campuses.”

    Background

The Electoral Commission registered eligible students in senior high schools between July 10, 2020, and July 11, 2020.

The Commission took the decision because SHS students are not allowed to go out of the premises of their schools.

The opposition National Democratic Congress insisted that the exercise was illegal since the senior high schools were not gazetted for the registration but the EC was adamant.

  • Weve fulfilled promise to ensure affordable VW cars are ensembled in Ghana Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says his government has delivered on its promise to ensure cars are ensembled in Ghana at affordable rates.

This comes after the first Volkswagen locally assembled cars in Ghana were recently unveiled by the global automobile company.

The German car manufacturer signed an MoU with the government of Ghana in 2018 to begin the process of establishing an assembling plant in the country to serve the West African sub-regional market.

With the cars now ready for the market, Ghanaians can buy a VW vehicle for as low as only GHC 60,000.

Akufo-Addo said the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has created the enabling environment for Volkswagen to ensemble affordable cars in Ghana.

“We created the enabling environment for @VWGroup to be able to assemble its vehicles in Ghana,” the President tweeted.

“Today, affordable VW vehicles are assembled right here in Ghana. A promise made, a promised fulfilled.”

Earlier this week, a proposal from Universal Motors Limited, the authorized distributors of VW in Ghana noted that “our models range from Polo, Golf, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan, Teramont, Touareg, etc.”

“Prices start from GHC60, 000 for brand new cars, newest models,” the proposal to Standbic bank read.

The document also added that the purchase of a VW car assembled in Ghana comes with a warranty and service package like two years unlimited mileage warranty and service plan available from one to five years.

  • Allow police officers to form unions Ex-Police Commander to government

Personnel of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) should be allowed to form and/or be part of a union, a Former Commander of the Formed Police Unit Superintendent Naa Hamza Yakubu has opined.

This, according to him, will allow police officers to have a collective understanding against undue influence or interference from government.

The retired Commander shared the opinion on the Campaign Trail with Regina Borley Bortey on Starr FM Wednesday.

“We still do not understand why they would not allow personnel of the Police Service to form a union or to join a union so that when it is that any government is trying to influence unduly the operational activities of the police, they should be able to stand up and speak against any unwarranted interference.”

He also asked that the position of the IGP be given absolute independence, such that he/she will be appointed by the Public Service Commission.

Currently, the IGP is appointed by the President, acting in consultation with the Council of State. A move which many stakeholders have in recent times chastised.

He explained “if it is that we want the Police to have absolute independence, the first thing I would want any political party to assure and to do is to allow the head of the Police i.e the IGP to be appointed by the Public Service Commission. When it is that we have this system, then we can at least be sure that we are going to have at least some level of respectability in dealing with the service especially at the top.”

Touching on logistics being made available to the service, the retired Commander called on government to direct their investment into human security rather than arms.

“Certainly they only pay lip service with the Police Service. They would assure of improved conditions and when they come they will turn their face elsewhere. For instance, I believe strongly that it will be appropriate now to invest in human security rather than arms. When it is that they are going to provide arms and equipment, they divert them to other places, that is when they are able to bring on board a lot of people we term as a job for the boys. You see them in all other security groups and then they are well equipped over and above the established Police Service.”

  • NPP youth urged to stand up against the lies of the opposition

Mr Henry Nana Boakye, National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has charged the youth in the Party to be very abreast with the performance of the government in order to be able to counter the lies of the opposition.

He said the NPP government in the last three and a half years, had worked hard to resuscitate the economy and initiated a number of social and development programmes which had helped create employment and improve the living conditions of the people across the country.

It was therefore important for the youth in the Party to lead the crusade to tell the people what the government had done within its first term in office, to counter the false claims and criticisms by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Addressing a meeting of the youth wing of the Party in Kumasi, Nana Boakye said NDC was only good at falsifying facts in order to divert attention of Ghanaians from the good works of the NPP government.

He said, the opposition NDC marvelled at the tremendous work of the government within this short period, and was trying to go all out to say bad things about the government in order to discredit it in the eyes of the public to win back political power.

Nana Boakye said the youth who were the backbone of the Party should rise up and counter any attempt by the NDC to peddle lies to win power in the upcoming elections.

He said the meeting which was part of the “Youth must know series” of the youth wing of the Party, aimed at building the capacities of the youth to be able to stand on their feet to educate the people on the good works and the various social intervention programmes being implemented by the government.

Nana Boakye mentioned the implementation of the free senior high school programme, planting for food and jobs, NABCO, expansion of the scholarship scheme, massive employment in the areas of education, health, afforestation, among others, as some of the many achievements of the government.

The National Youth Organizer charged the youth to prepare well for the task ahead to retain the NPP in power to help continue with the good works to improve the living conditions of the people.

  • Corornavirus: People should eat only thoroughly cooked meat

The public has been urged to only eat thoroughly cooked meat or food to prevent being infected by COVID-19 and other viral infections.

“Greens and vegetables, which are eaten raw should also be thoroughly and washed, soaked in salty water for about thirty minutes and rinsed in clean water if the salt needs to be taken off,” Dr Kwadwo Obeng Wiredu, a former Senior Veterinary Officer in charge of the Greater Accra Region, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview.

He explained that extreme heat, as well as a good concentration of salt, easily killed off viruses.

He said because some people handling foodstuffs could infect these foods with the novel Coronavirus virus it was necessary for all foods to be treated with the due suspicion, especially considering the nature of the pandemic, which was threatening the world.

Dr Obeng-Wiredu said most of the greens eaten in the country contained vitamin C, which when taken in the right quantities, immensely strengthened the immune system.

The Senior Veterinarian, therefore, urged the public to increase their intake of greens and fruits in order to boost their immune system against any potential viral attacks.

He also reminded the public to continue practising all the preventive measures against COVID-19 infection, including frequently washing their hands with soap under running water, using alcohol-based hand sanitizer, wearing face masks in public places and observing the social distancing rule.

“This virus is new and we are yet to find a cure for it and understand it better so we need to prevent people from getting infected as much as possible,” Dr Wiredu said.

He urged the media to endeavour to interview only qualified persons, such as health experts, to address the technical issues on the pandemic to ensure that the information published was accurate.

“This is a situation that has affected the whole world. It is, therefore, crucial that only information that is credible and from trustworthy sources is churned out,” Dr Obeng-Wiredu said.

Ghana has recorded more than 24,000 Covid-19 infections with more than 20,000 recoveries and over 130 deaths.

  • Mohammed Kudus to become most expensive Ghanaian teenager after Ajax move

Ghanaian youngster Kudus Mohammed is set to complete a sensational move to Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam.

The Nordsjaelland star, who can play both as a midfielder and an attacker, will reportedly put pen to paper on a five-year deal in the coming days.

Dutch media outlet FootballOranje reports that Ajax will fork out €9 million to price the 19-year-old away from the Danish outfit.

Should the move be confirmed, Kudus will become the most expensive teenager in the history of Ghana football.

The former Right to Dream academy star will turn 20 on August 2, so the move will need to be official before then for him to go into the history books.

This is because other Ghanaian youngsters have commanded bigger transfer fees than the €9 million Ajax is offering for Kudus, but most of them were past their teenage years.

In 2015, Atletico Madrid paid €10 million to price Bernard Mensah away from Vitoria Guimaraes. The midfielder was 20 years when the joined the Rojiblancos.

Also, Abdul Baba Rahman was just 21 when he completed a £21.7million move from Augsburg to Chelsea.

Kenya has made record sales from avocado exports amid the coronavirus pandemic, local newspaper Daily Nation reports.

The country sold more than 58,400 tonnes of avocado to 42 countries in the first half of the year, nearly matching the amount exported last year. It earned more than $75m (£59m) from the exports.

“The high export numbers can also be attributed to an increase in avocado acreage and quality of the fruit being produced by our farmers. We are excited by the prospects of rising demand for the fruit,” the paper quotes the chairman of the Avocado Society of Kenya, an association of avocado growers, as saying.

  • Hospitals in Kenya may soon run out of space – Kenyans warned

You still stand a high chance of succumbing to Covid-19 even after getting admission to intensive care unit, data from the Health ministry, which confirmed 497 new cases yesterday, show.

The figures show that 78 of the 225 coronavirus patients who had been admitted to ICU died, with five succumbing yesterday.

The ministry expressed fears that if the numbers of those requiring ICU care shoot up, hospitals will run out of space.

Health Director-General Patrick Amoth said the procedures needed for people in ICU are complex and time consuming and “if the numbers of those in need of critical care go up, we will not be able to have the adequate numbers of healthcare worker to offer this service.”

The new cases announced by Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe – 318 males and 179 females – takes Kenya’s Covid-19 caseload to 10,791.

Mr Kagwe expressed concern over the high number of those testing positive in Nairobi, which accounts for more than half of all the cases at 5,705. Mombasa (1,739), Busia (550) and Kiambu (520) also recorded spikes in infections.

Nairobi’s Westlands, Lang’ata, Dagoretti North and South, Embakassi East and West and Starehe continue to bear the bulk of the cases for Nairobi.

Dr Amoth’s concern over fast-filling ICU came as studies revealed patients who recover after intensive care may have to deal with long term disabilities such as muscle wasting, organ and brain damage.

A 2012 study published in the journal Annals of Intensive Care recorded an average of 53 percent of patients who experience frightening delusions after leaving the ICU.

This is common in patients who went to the ventilators.

Experts also warn Covid-19 patients who spend time in the ICU are prone to physical, cognitive and even mental health problems after discharge.

Dr Jeremiah Chakaya, a pulmonary diseases expert said post-intensive care syndrome is common, regardless of any disease that puts them there.

Mr Amos Kamimo was among the first patients in Kenya to land into ICU due to Covid-19. Already with heart problems, the forty days following his hospitalisation was like the biblical walking in the valley of the shadow of death.

“When I left home, I knew my health was not perfect owing to the shortness of breath and I disguised it as my congenital heart disease. Never did it cross my mind that I could be a Covid-19 patient,” he said.

He was transferred to the Aga Khan University Hospital since his situation needed the HDU, which at the time, had been occupied at Mbagathi Hospital.

“I was transferred because my lungs, heart and kidney were failing. My oxygen saturation level would drop to 60 percent and my doctors had told me that it should not go below 88 percent, I was scared,” he says.

The WHO says about 80 percent of those with Covid-19 recover without needing any specialist treatment, but an estimated one in six persons become very ill “and develop difficulty breathing”.

  • House of Representatives urges Buhari to reopen schools

The House of Representatives has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to order a partial reopening of schools to allow pupils sit for the 2020 West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

This is coming as a legal luminary and the founder of Afe Babalola University, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), said yesterday that the cancellation of the 2020 WASSCE by the Nigerian authorities was capable of breeding frustration and promoting criminality among the 1.5 million students who registered for it.

The House made the call at the plenary yesterday following a unanimous adoption of a motion moved by a member, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji.

The Committee on Basic Education and Services had earlier on Friday faulted the decision by the federal government to suspend the plan to partially reopen schools for pupils in final classes to take external examinations.

The committee had particularly criticised the decision to disallow Nigerian pupils from sitting for WASSCE to be conducted by the West African Examination Council for the 2019/2020 academic session.

Meanwhile, legal luminary and the founder of Afe Babalola University, Babalola, said yesterday that the cancellation of the 2020 WASSCE by the Nigerian authorities was capable of breeding frustration and promoting criminality among the 1.5 million who registered for it.

Babalola advised that rather than canceling the examination, the federal government should let it hold in the various school halls in addition to fashioning ways to ensure compliance with COVID-19 protocols.

The ABUAD founder, who spoke in a statement entitled, ‘Nigeria’s non-participation in the 2020 WASCE: Irreparable damage,’ argued that “a year of idleness for 1.5million people may breed frustration and promote criminality”.

He said, “If the federal government insists that there would be no WASSCE this year, the students are not just losing one calendar year, but losing an integral part of their entire lives which is gone forever by such declaration. We should always remember that after all, ‘time is life and life is time.

“The federal government should allow the WASSCE to take place in the empty spaces which are wasting away in our tertiary institutions, secondary schools and elementary schools which can conveniently accommodate them with a lot of social distancing and due compliance with World Health Organisation’s rules.”

“It is my firm belief that the future of these 1.5 million young Nigerians who have registered for WAEC should not be put in jeopardy. It is a well-known fact that all schools, colleges and tertiary institutions in the country are currently shut down. This affords the federal government the opportunity to use them for WAEC examination.

What the government should do is to prepare the empty rooms for WAEC examination – fumigate the halls and the premises, use face mask, provide sanitisers and ensure that WHO rules are obeyed to the letter,” he said.

Babalola, who wondered why it was only Nigeria that withdrew from the examination among the five West African countries involved, queried, “What steps have the other countries taken which would enable them to take WAEC examination which we cannot take?

“Are we saying that the other four countries do not appreciate the lives of their students? Why was the issue not turned over to the Nigerian body of WAEC or the general body of WAEC in Accra before the declaration of withdrawal to Nigeria?

Did the Hon. Minister take into consideration the moral and legal implication of Nigeria as a signatory to WAEC laws or the effect of such unilateral declaration of withdrawal?

All that is required to take the WAEC examination is proper management, consultation, and discussion instead of unilateral cancellation of annual international convention,” Babalola stated.

  • Coronavirus: Rwanda extends lockdown in new areas

Rwanda’s interior ministry has ordered selected areas in the south-west of the country back into lockdown from Wednesday after a rise in coronavirus cases.

Movement restrictions for two weeks have been put in place in Nyamasheke and Nyamagabe districts – including in a refugee camp which hosts thousands of Congolese.

Authorities said the measure, which is being enforced by security forces, was taken “after assessment of the pandemic in those districts”.

Last week, the authorities extended a two-week lockdown in some parts of the capital Kigali as cases were said to be rising.

Movement has been restricted to essential workers, those going to seek medical care, and to shop for food.

In the past 10 days, Rwanda has recorded 324 cases and one death, taking the total tally to 1,416 cases.

  • “Medikal is about to do wonders in the music industry and no artiste can stand him Shatta Wale

The relationship and camaraderie that has gained much grounds between rapper Medikal and Shatta Wale is beginning to go a notch higher as the latter showers praise on the former.

Both musicians are seen to be getting along with a lot of vibes which is actually nice on social media especially when many perceive Shatta Wale to be cold towards people who get along with him.

After driving as a delivery guy to go deliver some cedi notes to the AMG signee, Shatta Wale has taken to Twitter to pinpoint how glamorous and promising the future looks for Medikal.

According to Shatta Wale, what Medikal is yet to unleash onto the music scene in Ghana will be too great for any artiste to stand him; simply unmatchable.

What @AmgMedikal is about to do to this industry I wonder if the hospitals will get space for these artiste .. #GreatStar #AMG shine on my g !!!!

Many critics of Shatta Wale have criticized his inability to keep friends and loved ones for long. They cite several examples to back their belief that the SM President has some tendencies that dispel people away from him.

How his relationship with Shatta Michy came crushing down, how Pope Skinny and Ara B left in pain and how the militants were booted out of their base give many the conviction that Medikal will suffer the same fate.

However, as we have it now, we can clearly see Medikal and Shatta Wale and describe them as the best of friends as far as the Ghana music industry is concerned.

Whatever could have brought them this close and compact should definitely be beyond simply collaborating on a song or one gracing the marriage ceremony of the other…it is absolutely something big.

  • Accra-Nsawam Railway Line not a newly constructed track – GRCL

Contrary to recent media reports suggesting that the Accra to Nsawam section of the Eastern Railway line is a newly constructed one, it has turned out that the Accra-Nsawam railway track was constructed between 1910 and 1912.

There was a recent media report suggesting that the Accra-Nsawam line is a new track that has been washed away by flood waters at Achimota.

However, construction of the Accra-Nsawam railway line started as far back as 1910 and ended 1912 when Ghana was still under colonial rule.

Indeed, the Accra-Nsawam railway line is about 110-years old and its construction was carried out by the colonial administration at the time.

Documents from the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) show that from 1912, the said track did not undergo any major repair works until May 2018 when the ongoing rehabilitation commenced on the line.

“After obtaining all the procurement approvals, the actual work was scheduled to commenced on 21st May, 2018. However, this delayed until early July, 2018 due to the late arrival of some of the earth moving equipment and the treated wooden sleepers to be used. On 1st January, 2019 a locomotive was able to travel on the railway line from Accra to Nsawam, successfully.”

The Accra-Nsawam railway line is a narrow gauge with wooden sleepers.

However, all newly constructed railway lines under the President Nana Akufo-Addo’s Government are standard gauge.

Also, the sleepers for all newly constructed lines are concrete and not wooden as is the case with the Accra-Nsawam line.

The Accra-Nsawam railway line stretches a distance of about 40km and is part of the Eastern Railway line.

It has been used purposely for passenger rail services for the past 10 years, providing transport services.

In July 2017, according to the Ghana Railway Company Limited, it became necessary that the railway line from Accra to Nsawam be examined due to its deteriorating state, which had made it unsafe for commuters.

As a result, the Ministry of Railways Development (MoRD) constituted a team of experts to thoroughly examine the condition and state of the rail line and rolling stock, GRCL says.

“A decision was taken by the MoRD after the team of experts submitted their findings to the Minister, which subsequently led to the closure of the line from Accra to Nsawam to allow for a complete track rehabilitation,” according to GRCL.

    Cause of Erosion

GRCL says another factor that led to the delay in completion of the rehabilitation works was erosion.

“This was caused by increase settlements which resulted to an increase in the volume of the runoff water from said settlements that led to major erosion at sections along the railway line,” GRCL pointed out in a statement.

“Poor drainage systems at these settlements also led to redirection of huge volumes of runoff water from these settlements to the railway track resulting in big pockets of erosion to track formation,” according to Railway Company.

    Interventions

Meanwhile, the Ghana Railway Company Limited indicated the construction of catch drains to reduce the volume and speed of water being redirected to the track from upper areas at Pokuase to prevent erosions and flooding.

“To effect the track rehabilitation, 23,000 treated wooden sleepers, 50,000 cubic meters of ballast were procured and used on the line during the project.”

  • Hundreds of Mozambican miners return to South Africa

A group of 300 Mozambican miners have returned to South Africa to resume their jobs.

Most of the mine workers had been forced to return to their country because of coronavirus restrictions.

This is the second group of Mozambican miners to be called back to South African mines in less than 10 days.

The first one, of more than 200 miners from AngloGold Ashanti, returned to South Africa a week ago, but are in quarantine for 14 days to ensure that they are free of Covid-19.

Juca Bata, the spokesman for Mozambique’s National Migration Service said all miners were tested for Covid-19 before departure and will also be tested on the South African side.

About 12,000 Mozambican miners, mostly from the southern provinces of the country, work in South African mines.

South Africa shut down mines across the country in March as the government announced a nationwide lockdown. The restrictions have since been eased.

  • Ethiopia restores internet after shutdown

Internet services have been restored in parts of Ethiopia two weeks after violent protests broke out following the killing of popular Oromo singer Hachalu Hundesa in the capital, Addis Ababa.

People can now access wi-fi and broadband connections.

The authorities defended the shutdown – the longest the country has experienced since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power in April 2018 – saying it was being used to fan inter-ethnic violence.

According to the authorities, trouble started after young people from the Oromia region insisted on diverting a procession escorting Hachalu’s body from Addis Ababa to his hometown of Ambo for burial. They wanted him to be buried in the capital.

The authorities say more than 200 people were killed in the clashes, including some security officers. At least 5,000 people were arrested.

The ethnic-based attacks were brutal and horrific, according to a report by the Mail and Guardian.

A foreign journalist based in Ethiopia has shared a video showing the destruction wrought by the violence in Shashamene, a town in Oromia 250km (155 miles) south of Addis Ababa:

Editor-in-Chief of Asante Kotoko Express newspaper, Jerome Otchere has wondered why the Porcupine Warriors have failed to compensate victims of the accident that happened in 2017 after three years.

Asante Kotoko was involved in an accident on the Nkwakaw highway while returning from Accra to Kumasi after their 1-0 loss to Inter Allies in the Ghana Premier League.

The accident claimed the life of deputy equipment officer Thomas Obeng Asare, injured players and technical team members including coach Steve Polack, assistant Godwin Ablordey; Baba Mahama and Ashitey Ollenu.

Adding his voice to the growing concerns about why the club has not compensated the victims, Jerome Otchere stated that he is surprised that the victims have still not been compensated despite the club receiving over Ghc100,000 from sympathizers including rivals Accra Hearts of Oak.

“@KotokoExpress records show that 20 individuals, groups, and institutions donated over Ghc100,000 to the victims. Hollard insurance refunded medical bills paid by the club. So, where did the donations go to? Jerome Otchere posted on Twitter.

  • You cant reduce GBC channels Minority to Communications Ministry

The Minority in Parliament has chided the government over attempts to reduce the state broadcaster, GBC’s channels on the Digital Terrestrial Television platform.

A communiqué from the Communications Ministry to GBC, sighted by Class News has directed the state broadcaster to reduce the number of channels it occupies on the DTT platform from six to three.

The letter which bears the name and signature of the sector Minister, Mrs Ursula Owusu Ekuful says the move is aimed at ensuring there is redundancy on the platform which is currently at full capacity.

Speaking to the media in Parliament today, Wednesday, 15 July 2020, member of the Communications committee, Samuel Nartey George described the move by the Ministry as “bad faith” and amounting to gagging the media.

According to him, the Minister does not have the right to authoritise GBC to cut down on its channels because GBC is not an agency under the Ministry of Communications but rather the Information Ministry.

He among other things demanded answers from the Minister on allegations that the move is meant to create spectrum for the establishment of Asaase TV, purportedly belonging to some members of the government.

Responding to the claim, Ms Ursula Owusu Ekuful told journalists that the DTT platform is indeed used up and it is important to create space for other government purposes.

She also rubbished claims that the government seeks to create space for the creation of Asaase TV.

  • I will be surprised if CAS ruling doesnt go in favour of Osei Palmer – Isaac Koomson

Aduana Stars representative Isaac Koomson said he will be surprised if the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) ruling will go in favour of the decision taken by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to disqualify Wilfred Osei Kwaku ‘Palmer’ from contesting in the 2019 election.

Osei Palmer was disqualified by the then Normalisation Committee of the GFA from contesting in the election for failing to pay the 10 per cent player transfer fee.

According to the former Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Vice Chairman, the decision from CAS should vindicate Osei Palmer on his disqualification from the GFA presidential elections.

“I will not pray that the decision will go against the Ghana Football Association but I will be surprised that CAS will say something different than what Dr Kofi Amoah did was right,” he told Odiasempa Kwame Oware on Happy Sports on Happy 98.9FM.

“Leading to the end of the Normalisation Committee administration, football people we were eager to get them out so we grossed over so many things,” he added.

CAS is expected to announce its verdict on Friday, June 17 on the disqualification of Osei Palmer from the GFA presidential elections held last year.

  • NDC accuses police of looking on as an MP and its registration agents were assaulted

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region is demanding the arrest and prosecution of persons who assaulted the Ejura-Sekyere-Odumase MP and two registration agents.

Muhammed Bawah Braimah MP for Ejura-Sekyere-Odumase was allegedly attacked by persons believed to belong to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Ejura, while the agents were beaten up at Drobonso.

Party leaders say they have made names of suspects available to police and expect them to be apprehended within 72 hours.

Regional Secretary, Kwame Zu and Communications Officer, Abass Nurudeen, addressed the media in Kumasi said the police and military persons witnessed the assault.

“The police and the military, who are expected to stay in the middle have now teamed up with the NPP to assault NDC members.

“Soldiers and police are being directed by DCEs to beat NDC agents at polling stations and our MP for Ejura, who nearly lost his life.

“At Drobonso, two of our agents were just challenging some non-citizens who were at a centre to write their names. They called police officers to beat them up,” Mr Nurudeen alleged.

The NDC is also alleging that police and military personnel deployed to monitor the registration exercise are intimidating its members.

It also accused the Electoral Commission of padding figures recorded in the on-going registration exercise as part of a plot to rig the 2020 polls for the governing party.

The Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Division recorded a year-on-year inflation rate of 13.8%, the Ghana Statistical Service has announced on Wednesday July 15.

According to the GSS, this is 1.3 percentage points lower than May 2020 (15.1%), but 5.9 percentage points higher than the average over the eight months preceding March 2020 (7.9%).

Month-on-month the inflation for Fruits and Nuts stood at 3.0% while Vegetables recorded a negative inflation of -2.1%.

As Food contributed 54.4% to year-on-year inflation, it is still the predominant driver of year-on-year inflation, but it contributed less than the previous two months.

Month-on-month Food inflation was 0.1%, which is less than the overall month-on-month inflation and the month-on-month Food inflation in May (2.3%) and April 2020 (6.4%).

Non-food inflation came in at 9.2%, which is higher than the 8.4% measured in May 2020. Like last month, the Division with the highest month-on-month inflation was Housing, Water, Electricity and Gas (5.4%).

Compared to earlier months, Housing, Water, Electricity and Gas (20%) also contributed more to year-on-year inflation. This is driven by an increase in Rent prices and inflation for refuse collection

  • Hike in coronavirus cases worrying GBA

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has described as “worrying” the growing number of Covid-19 cases in the country.

Ghana as at Tuesday, 14 July 2020 had recorded 25, 252 confirmed coronavirus cases, 21, 397 recoveries with 139 deaths.

Responding to the figures, the GBA in a statement signed by its President, Anthony Forson called on citizens and residents of Ghana to comply with all laws that have been made as a safeguard to combat the Covid-19 pandemic to guaranty public safety and protection.

“The GBA will particularly entreat citizens and residents to ensure compliance with among others prescribed social distancing and enhanced hygiene protocols and the wearing of face-covering at all times,” the statement said.

The lawyers further called on all recognised professional bodies and associations and the media to be ambassadors in the sustained effort to compliment all efforts made so far to ensure public health, safety and protection.

The association further noted that the increasing number of “Covid-19 cases in institutions and establishment is worrying and we must all cooperate and combat the pandemic in our dear country.”

According to the GBA, it is in the interest of Ghanaians to comply with all laws and precautionary measures that have been put in place to stem the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

The GBA reinforced that persons who flout the said laws should be arrested, duly prosecuted and convicted.

It further called on the Electoral Commission and law enforcement agencies to ensure that all the requisite protocols are strictly observed at all the registration centres in the current voters registration exercise as any breaches at the registration centres will result in an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases and thus it is imperative that the protocols are rigorously enforced.

  • Minority challenges Ursulas locus in ordering shutdown of GBC channels

The Minority members on the Communications Committee of Parliament have challenged the authority of the Minister of Communications in writing to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to reduce the number of its channels on the National Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) network.

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Constituency, Sam Nartey George, who is a member of the Committee, said it is not within the remit of Ursula Owusu-Ekuful to order the shutdown of the channels.

In a letter dated 26th June, 2020, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful directed the Director General of the state broadcaster to within 60 days reduce its channels from six to three.

“This is to ensure that there is redundancy on the National DTT platform which is currently at full capacity,” the Ablekuma West MP wrote.

“You will therefore be required to consolidate your programming in line with this directive.”

But she assured in her correspondence that in future, when GBC plans to expand its capacity on the network, “you will be allocated additional channels”.

But Sam George told journalists in Parliament on Wednesday that GBC is not an agency under the Ministry of Communications to take instructions from the sector minister.

“The GBC is under the Ministry of Information,” he stressed.

“We would have loved to see a directive from the sector minister.”

He said this is akin to the Minister of Interior writing to the Chief of Army Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), instructing him to release military officers, when they are under the Minister of Defence.

“If the Minister of Communications did have any need for channels, the right procedure would have been to request from her colleague minister, the Minister for Information, to respond or do what she wanted to do.”

  • What is the future of Kurt Okraku if Palmer wins CAS case against the GFA?

The future of Ghana Football Association boss Kurt Okraku could be thrown wide open if Wilfred Osei Kweku “Palmer” wins his landmark case against the association at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

If Palmer’s reliefs are granted by the world sport court on Friday, July 17, it will essentially collapse the 10-month presidency of the former Dreams FC Executive chairman.

Kurt Okraku won a sweet victory in the presidential election back in October last year after a rigorous campaign.

But his young administration could be scuttled if Palmer becomes successful at the global tribunal.

The Ghana Football Association boss could face another bout of a laborious re-election bid if the association losses the case at CAS.

However, these are ifs and buts with the much-anticipated verdict expected to put to bed the long-winding battle that has rocked the GFA since Mr. Okraku assumed the top position.

Palmer dragged the defunct normalization committee to CAS for an unfair and “calculated” disqualification from the presidential race.

The verdict has a far-reaching implication for both parties with CAS set to announce the ruling on Friday, July 17.

There are two things likely to happen – CAS to throw out the case and allow the status quo to remain or order for a re-run of the election if it was deemed the plaintiff was unfairly disqualified from the race.

These are frenetic times for the followers of both disqualified aspirant Wilfred Osei Kweku and current FA boss Kurt Okraku.

  • What future remains for Palmer if he loses the CAS case against the GFA?

The future of Tema Youth president Wilfred Osei Kweku “Palmer” in football could be facing an uncertain future if he losses his case against the Ghana Football Association at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Palmer, who was successful at the global tribunal in 2016, is facing another battle for a re-election bid following his disqualification from the race by the defunct normalization committee.

The investment banker is challenging his unfair elimination from the presidential race 10-months ago.

However, it remains unclear what the future will hold for the hugely respected football owner if he becomes unsuccessful at the world sport court.

A defeat for Palmer will be a huge financial loss to the former Ghana FA Executive Council member after paying a staggering $48,000 fee for the case to be heard.

Also, it will be a massive blow to his numerous followers, who are in a positive mood ahead of the much-awaited verdict on Friday, July 17.

The chips will fall in place for both parties latest by Friday to bring to an end long-winding 10-month litigation involving the two parties.

The verdict from CAS will be the final coffin for both Palmer and the Ghana Football Association as it will bring closure to the litigation which has brought so much animosity and anger.

CAS will announce the decision whether to uphold Palmer’s quest to annul the election and order for fresh polls to decide on a new President for the GFA or allow the status quo to remain.

The situation has put the presidency of Kurt Okraku on the line with wide-reaching implications if Palmer becomes successful.

The ruling from CAS will put to rest months of intense anxiety involving all the principal actors.

  • CK Akonnor backed to shatter Ghana’s AFCON trophy jinx

Former Ghana international Ali Jarrah believes Black Stars coach CK Akonnor has enough quality personnel at his disposal to end the nation’s long wait for an Africa Cup of Nations title.

Ghana, who have four successes to their name, have been unable to add to their haul since last ruling the continent in 1982.

After a disappointing showing at the 2019 tournament in Egypt, the West Africans have replaced coach James Kwasi Appiah with Akonnor, who assumed duty in January.

“CK needs support. The materials are there and through support, we can break that jinx,” Jarrah, an U17 World Cup winner, told Citi TV.

“CK Akonnor was appointed because he is capable so we should allow him to pick his best team, make his own decisions.

“The players must play for CK and not the country. They should see him as a former captain and I tell you we can win the Afcon.”

Jarrah then shed light on the secret to Ghana’s success at the 1991 U17 World Cup in Italy.

“We were an all-round team and we also started the preparations two years before the tournament, so we knew ourselves very well,” the former goalkeeper said.

“In our final qualifying game against Morocco, the game was forfeited due to the Gulf War that happened then.

“When we got there, we were not used to the weather as it was cold, it was only Yaw Preko, Odartey Lamptey and the guys who were already playing in Europe who were comfortable with it. So when the game was cancelled due to the war, everyone jubilated.

“The group was fortunate because right after that, we went to Germany for camping. We were there for over three months. So we acclimatised, studied the weather, played a lot of games and were also high in confidence.

“Odartey Lamptey, Yaw Preko all had European experiences of what the tournament felt like. The likes of Mohammed Gargo, Daniel Addo, Willie Brown and Ernest Opoku were extraordinary players.

“The calibre of players we had gave us so much confidence.
