  • ‘He played 90 minutes without touching the ball’ – 10 football records that can never be broken

On a daily basis new football records are been created by professional footballers and old ones broken, but there are some records that you would see or hear of and you become amazed as to how it is possible.

In this article I have presented 10 records that were created by 10 different professional footballers and teams all over the world. There is no order of arrangement but the last one will shock you.

    10. Ryan Giggs

Giggs scored 107 premier league goals without a single hat-trick.

In his playing days Giggs was not a striker but a winger, he holds the record of scoring at least 1 goal in 21 consecutive Premier League seasons. He is now the Welsh football coach but as a player, he managed to score in each of his first 21 Premier League seasons and also has 107 league goals for Manchester United.

He scored a brace 10 different times in the Premier League for Manchester United but never scored a hat-trick. The only hat-trick he scored for United was in a friendly match but never in the league.

    9. Kanu Nwankwo

Kanu won the African player of the year award twice, despite scoring zero goals over a span of 6 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

This will come as a surprise to many bearing in mind how highly Nigerians regard Nwankwo Kanu.

The former Arsenal player despite winning the African best player awards in 1996 and 1999, wasn’t able to replicate the goal scoring form he showed at club level in the Super Eagles national team. He also played in 3 World Cup tournaments for the Super Eagles without scoring as well.

    8. Eric Bailly

Eric Bailly took a 40 yard shot that went outside the Stadium.

Eric Bailly is a Manchester United player, this happened in October 2018 while playing a Champions League match against Valencia at Old trafford, under the then United manager Jose Mourinho. It was reported after the match that Eric Bailly’s attempted 40 yard shot went over and landed outside the Old Trafford stadium. What a shot!

    7. Liverpool

Liverpool recorded 97 league points in the Premier League without winning the title.

In 2018/2019 Premier League season, Liverpool in 38 matches won 30, drew 7 and lost just once, giving them 97 points. This was not enough to secure them the title as Manchester City beat them to the league title by 1 point as they had 98.

In previous seasons this would have been enough to land them the title as it holds the record for the 3rd highest points reached by a team in the Premier League. Of course Man City’s 100 and 98 points in 2018 and 2019 respectively remains the highest.

    6. Sadio Mane

Sadio Mane scored a Premier League hat-trick in 176 seconds.

Sadio Mane is currently a Liverpool player but this happened in 16th May 2015 when he was still at Southampton.

Southampton was playing against Aston Villa and in the 13th minute Mane scored his first goal and completed his hat-trick on the 16th minute. His record surpassed that of Robbie Fowler which was set in 1994 in a match against Arsenal, Fowler scored his hat-trick in 273 seconds.

    5. Real Madrid

Real Madrid won 3 consecutive Champions League titles.

Every football fan knows how difficult it is to win the Champions League trophy, since it was renamed from European Cup to Champions League in 1992/1993 season, no team have won it twice in a row, even the Barcelona class of 2009 couldn’t repeat it in 2010.

It remained so until after Real Madrid won it in 2016, they changed history by winning it again in 2017 and 2018, making it three consecutive times they had won it before surrendering the title to Liverpool in 2019.

    4. Frank Lampard

The only midfielder in the Premier League to score over 150 Premier League goals.

Frank Lampard played for West Ham, Chelsea and Manchester City during his playing days, the rate at which he scored goals season after season in the Premier League will be envied by some strikers for years to come.

At Chelsea he is their club record goal scorer with 211 goals, in the Premier League he scored a total of 177 goals in his time with the 3 clubs. Am sure you will be surprised to know he is in the top 5 of the list of Premier League highest goal scorers since it’s inception in 1992, and he is above Arsenal’s Thierry Henry in that list.

    3. Robert Lewandowski

Lewandowski scored 5 goals in 9 minutes.

In September 2015, Lewandowski was brought in by Pep Guardiola after half-time as Bayern Munich were losing 0 – 1 to wolfsburg. In the 51st minute he equalised for Bayern then in the next 8 minutes 59 seconds he completed his 5 goal rout.

He broke some records in the process including, fastest Bundesliga hat-trick (3 minutes 22 seconds), fastest four goals in a Bundesliga match (5 minutes 42 seconds), fastest five goals scored in a Bundesliga match (8 minutes 59 seconds), most goals scored by a substitute in a Bundesliga match (5 goals). He received 4 world record awards and was entered in the Guinness book of records.

    2. Lionel Messi

Messi scored 91 goals in one calendar year

In 2012 messI broke Muller’s record of scoring the highest number of goals in a calender year. He did this by scoring 91 goals that year, the goals were for both club and country. He scored 79 goals for Barcelona and 12 goals for Argentina. He went on to win his 4th consecutive Fifa Ballon d’Or award that same year, another record of it’s own.

    1. Thomas Sweswe

    Source: The Score Nigeria

Sweswe played the whole 90 minutes of a football match without kicking the ball for once.

In his playing days Thomas Sweswe played in the center-back position, he was born 9th August 1981 in Zimbabwe. He played for 9 different clubs as well as the National team. According to The Score Nigeria, in a Kaiser Chiefs game Thomas Sweswe played the entire 90 minutes and never touched the ball.

Personally I don’t see how this record can be broken.

As a fan of football which among these records do you think will be the hardest to break?

  • UN and AU condemn ‘use of force’ on Mali protesters

The UN and the African Union have condemned the government of Mali for what they called its use of lethal force on protesters who are calling for the resignation of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.

The protests, which started last month, turned violent on Friday with police reportedly firing gunshots towards demonstrators – some of whom had occupied government buildings in the capital, Bamako.

In a statement, the UN mission in Mali, the African Union, the European Union and the West African regional grouping Ecowas all criticised the Malian authorities over its handling of the protests.

They have also condemned vandalism by the protesters and called on all parties to exercise restraint.

They urged the Malian government to release opposition leaders arrested over the weekend.

The Malian authorities said at least four people were killed on Friday, but the opposition says eight more were killed by the police on Saturday during the street protests.

The protesters want President Keïta to step down over what they describe as his government’s failure to end the long-running violence by militants linked to al-Qaeda and IS, as well as the economic crisis and the disputed legislative elections held in March.

  • Kagame blames Kenya and Uganda for long cargo delays

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has complained about neighbouring nations Kenya and Uganda causing delays to imported goods because of the requirement to test truck drivers for Covid-19.

The Rwandan leader’s comments are prompted by long delays for road cargo, as drivers are tested at the border by the Kenyan and Ugandan authorities.

Rwanda is a landlocked country and imports either travel through a northern corridor from Kenyan port city Mombasa, or a route further south from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

President Kagame said “coronavirus is killing people, business and even relationships” and he called the delays “unfair”.

However, he did not mention how Rwanda was the first country in the region to close its borders, at the onset of the pandemic, which disrupted the transport of cargo to Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mr Kagame’s comments could raise tensions within the East African Community, at a time when the regional bloc needs political unity to cope with the economic impact of the pandemic.

  • US Supreme Court allows federal executions to resume

The US Supreme Court has cleared the way for the first executions of federal prisoners in 17 years.

Several executions were delayed after a judge ruled on Monday that there were still unresolved legal challenges against the justice department.

Among those facing the death penalty is triple murderer Daniel Lewis Lee, who was due to be executed on Monday.

The condemned prisoners have argued that lethal injections constitute “cruel and unusual punishments”.

The Supreme Court voted 5-4 that “executions may proceed as planned”.

How US death penalty capital changed its mind
US government death penalty move draws sharp criticism
The Americans volunteering to watch executions
Last year, the Trump administration said it would resume federal executions.

In a statement at the time, Attorney General William Barr said: “The justice department upholds the rule of law – and we owe it to the victims and their families to carry forward the sentence imposed by our justice system.”

Some of the relatives of Lee’s victims oppose his execution in Indiana and had sought to have it delayed, arguing that attending it could expose them to coronavirus.

Earlene Peterson, 81, whose daughter, granddaughter and son-in-law were killed by Lee, has said she wants the 47-year-old to be given life in jail, the same sentence as his accomplice.

The Trump administration’s move has been criticised as a political decision, with campaigners expressing concern about cases being rushed.

The last inmate executed by federal death penalty was Louis Jones Jr, a 53-year-old Gulf War veteran who murdered 19-year-old soldier Tracie Joy McBride.

    Who are the condemned prisoners?
Daniel Lewis Lee was convicted of torturing and killing a family in Arkansas in 1996, dumping their bodies in a lake.

Postponed from December, his execution had been rescheduled for 16:00 (20:00 GMT) on 13 July but was blocked by a ruling from District Judge Tanya Chutkan.

“The court… finds that the likely harm that plaintiffs would suffer if the court does not grant injunctive relief far outweighs any potential harm to defendants,” the judge had said.

Her ruling was consequently overruled by the Supreme Court, which said: “The plaintiffs in this case have not made the showing required to justify last-minute intervention by a Federal Court.”

Three more federal executions are scheduled in the near future. All three prisoners are, like Lee, child killers:

-Wesley Ira Purkey, who was sentenced in Missouri in 2003 for the rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl whose body he dismembered, burnt and dumped in a septic pond, is due to be executed on Wednesday

-Dustin Lee Honken, sentenced in Iowa in 2004 for shooting dead five people including two girls aged six and 10, is due to be executed on Friday

-Keith Dwayne Nelson, sentenced in Missouri in 2001 for the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl behind a church, is set to be executed next month

Federal and state executions – what’s the difference?

Under the US justice system, crimes can be tried either in federal courts – at a national level – or in state courts, at a regional level.

Certain crimes, such as counterfeiting currency or mail theft, are automatically tried at a federal level, as are cases in which the US is a party or those which involve constitutional violations. Others can be tried in federal courts based on the severity of the crimes.

The death penalty was outlawed at state and federal level by a 1972 Supreme Court decision that cancelled all existing death penalty statutes.

A 1976 Supreme Court decision allowed states to reinstate the death penalty and in 1988 the government passed legislation that made it available again at federal level.

According to data collected by the Death Penalty Information Center, 78 people were sentenced to death in federal cases between 1988 and 2018 but only three were executed. There are 62 inmates currently on federal death row.

    Capital punishment in the US

All four condemned men are white but race is a major concern among campaigners against the death penalty in the US.

Black people account for 34% of those executed and 42% of those currently on death row despite making up only 13.4% of Americans, the Death Penalty Information Center reports.

    According to the non-profit organisation:

-The death penalty is a legal punishment in 28 US states

-Since 1976, 1,519 executions have taken place

-Since 1976, Texas has carried out the most executions (570), followed by Virginia (113) and Oklahoma (112)

-There were 2,620 inmates on death row in the US as of 1 January

-California has the most prisoners on death row – 725 – but has carried out only 13 executions since 1976

-The vast majority of executions were by lethal injection (1,339) with just three by firing squad

-Since 2002, it has been illegal to execute defendants with “mental retardation”

  • Nine assemblies in Upper West Region silent on assembly members ex-gratia

Nine out of the 11 Municipal and District Assemblies in the Upper West Region have turned a deaf ear on the payment of various amounts of money agreed upon as ex-gratia to their former Assembly members.

The nine include; Wa, Jirapa, Lawra, and Nandom Municipalities as well as Wa West, Nadowli-Kaleo, Lambussie, Daffiama-Bussie-Issa, and Wa East District Assemblies as of now had not paid any amount as ex-gratia to their former Assembly members since the Assemblies were dissolved on October 7, 2019.

So far in the region, only Sissala East Municipality paid in full the agreed amount of GH?3,000.00 to each of its Assembly members, while the Sissala West District paid half (GH?1,000.00) out of the GH?2,000.00 agreed on by the house.

The amounts agreed on by the defaulting Assemblies are; Wa Municipality between GH?1000.00 – GH?1,500.00 to each member, Jirapa Municipality GH?5,000.00 to each member, Lawra Municipality GH?5,000.00 to each member, and Nandom Municipality GH?3,000.00 to each member.

The rest are; Wa West District between GH?1000.00 – GH?1,500.00 to each member, Nadowli-Kaleo District GH?1000.00 to each member, Lambussie District GH?3,000.00 to each member, Daffiama-Bissie-Issa District GH?3,000.00 to each member, and Wa East District GH?3,000.00 to each member.

Some of the former Presiding Members (PMs) of the defaulting Assemblies when contacted expressed their displeasure at the half-hearted attitude of the Assemblies towards payment of their ex-gratia.

They said they made several pleas to the Municipal and District Chief Executives to honour them their entitlement, but all their pleas fell on deaf ears.

“They will promise us when the Common Fund comes, they will pay, but when it lands and you call them they will either not pick your call or they will pick and start complaining that the Assemblies were sitting on heavy debts”, they said.

“What we have realized is that the Municipal and District Chief Executives are being wicked towards us”, they said and added that even if things were difficult and they commit to paying bit-by-bit by now all of them would have finished paying.

“For an Assembly member to sacrifice for four years and be denied his/her token christened ex-gratia is unthinkable and a gross display of lack of appreciation of the sacrificial work of the Assembly member”, a member lamented.

The PMs, however, commended Sissala East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Karim Nanyua, for showing examplary leadership and commitment to the plight of their colleagues.

The PMs also appealed to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to appreciate their plight and impress on the Assemblies to give them their little entitlement.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Issahaku Tahiru Moomin, the Wa Municipal Chief Executive who is also the Dean of the Municipal and District Chief Executives in the region declined to comment when the GNA contacted him.

  • Adorable video of African boy singing with powerful voice goes viral

A boy has left many netizens with their mouths wide open after showcasing his talent in singing.

In the video which has since gone viral, the unknown boy is heard singing perfectly in Swahili, something that not many people can have the courage to do.

The video was first shared on Facebook by Inooro FM presenter Jeff Kuria who hailed the boy for his talent.

In his caption, the presenter said that Kenyan singers were the country’s pride.

“Our musicians our pride. Let us not emulate the Pharisees,” he wrote.

Looking at the video background, it is clear that the boy is from a humble background as the house he was sitting in front of is made of mud and his clothes are dirty.

He sang the song Tusifanane Wafarisayo (let’s not be like Pharisees) deep from his heart.

From the comments, many said the young boy appeared to be an SDA as most of them are trained to sing at a young age.

Others requested the presenter to trace him saying his voice and talent should be nurtured.

According to one Oladehinde Gabriel Aremu, the young boy should get a producer who will be able to showcase his talent.

Oh my God! What a good and beautiful voice, that child does not belong to that village or environment, he immediately needs good music producers that can showcase him. May God transform his life and makes his voice heard all over the world in Jesus name,” read his comment.

  • Timbuktu’s jihadist police chief before ICC for war crimes

The war crimes trial of the former head of the Islamic police in the Malian city of Timbuktu has started at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud headed the Islamic police when it was under the control of Islamist militants for seven months in 2012.

He has been charged in The Hague with war crimes, crimes against humanity, rape and sexual slavery.

Women and girls were allegedly forced to marry militants.

The Islamic police commanders are also believed to have ordered the destruction of historic monuments and buildings dedicated to Islam.

Mr Abdoul Aziz was handed over to the ICC in 2018 by the Malian authorities.

    Residents ‘terrorised’

Prosecutors accuse him of being a key member of Ansar Dine, the militants who occupied Timbuktu in May 2012 – one of several Islamist groups to exploit an ethnic Tuareg uprising at the time to take over cities in northern Mali.

They imposed strict Islamic rule in Timbuktu – prosecutors at pre-trial hearings said Mr Abdoul Aziz had “terrorised” local residents, the AFP news agency reports.

Many Muslim shrines were also destroyed during Ansar Dine’s rule, which lasted until January 2013 when 4,000 French troops were deployed to help Mali’s army fight back against the militants who were pushing south.

Timbuktu is famous for its distinctive mud and wood architecture. It was a centre of Islamic learning between the 13th and 17th centuries and was added to the Unesco world heritage list in 1988.

But Islamists regard the shrines and the city’s ancient manuscripts, covering everything from history to astronomy, as idolatrous.

Mr Abdoul Aziz is only the second person to face trial at the court over his actions during the devastating war in Mali.

The other man, Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi pleaded guilty in 2016 to destroying nine mausoleums and a mosque, in the first case of cultural desecration heard by the ICC.

He was jailed for nine years, after declaring he was “really sorry” for his actions and asking for forgiveness.

In 2017 ICC judges found him liable for nearly €3m (£2.6m; $3,6m) in damages.

  • Kotoko midfielder Richard Senanu eyes starting place in the new season

Asante Kotoko SC midfielder Richard Senanu has set sights on a starting berth in the team in the new season.

Senanu has made full-recovery from a lengthy injury that has kept him on the sidelines for more than twelve months.

The talented and intelligent midfielder suffered a severe knee injury in 2019 during a CAF Confederations Cup group stage game against Zambian side ZESCO United in Kumasi.

Senanu is confident of earning back his position in the Asante Kotoko team when the 2020/2021 season starts.

“I strongly believe getting playing time when football bounces back although am just coming back from injury,” he told Footballmadeinghana.com.

“Looking at what l was doing for the club before l got injured, even when l was on my injury bed the Coach was praying for me to bounce back quickly.

“I am certain and optimistic of getting my position back when the new season starts.”

The 26-year-old was an instrumental figure for the Porcupine Warriors in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2019.

He featured six games in the qualifications and the group stages before his injury.

  • We were very prepared for 1991 U-17 World Cup – Ali Jarrah

Former Ghana goalie Ali Jarrah has revealed how the Black Starlets won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 1991.

The 1991 Starlets team became the first Ghanaian side to win a FIFA World Cup following their triumph in Italy.

But according to Ali Jarrah, who was a member of the team, the Black Starlets prepared for almost two years to achieve the historic feat.

“We are an all-round team and we also started the preparations two years before the tournament, so we knew ourselves very well,” he told Citi Tv’s The Tracker Show.

“In our final qualifying game against Morocco, the game was forfeited due to the Gulf War that happened then. When we got there, we were not used to the weather as it was cold, it was only Yaw Preko, Odartey Lamptey and the guys who were already playing in Europe who were comfortable with it. So when the game was cancelled due to the war, everyone jubilated.

“The group were fortunate because right after that, we went to Germany for camping. We were there for over three months. So we acclimatized, studied the weather, played a lot of games and were also high in confidence.

“Odartey Lamptey, Yaw Preko all had European experiences of what the tournament felt like. The likes of Mohammed Gargo, Daniel Addo, Willie Brown and Ernest Opoku are extraordinary players. The calibre of players we had gave us so much confidence.

“We knew we could win the cup when we scored the German U-17 team 6-0 in one of our trial games and so we built up game by game. So we took it a game at a time before reaching the finals against Spain.”

German side Borussia Dortmund, English sides Newcastle United, Tottenham and Everton as well as French outfits Lyon and Marseille have all been linked.

Nordsjaelland sporting chief Jan Laursen has confirmed a number of clubs have been tracking the want-away midfielder.

“There has been speculation since he broke through (at Nordsjaelland),” Laursen says.

“In the winter there were clubs knocking, but then the whole world was put on hold with the crisis. Now we have started playing again, and then the door is knocked upon again.

“There is a lot of interest and great focus, but you have not changed (clubs) until a press release is signed. And we are not there.

“It was on the cards when we extended (a contract) with Kudus that this season we should see if he could take the next step.”

Kudus, already compared to Chelsea legend Michael Essien, is open to leaving the Danish side for a career jump.

The Receiver of the collapsed microfinance companies, savings and loans, and finance houses, Eric Nana Nipah says all affected depositors with valid claims will receive their locked up investments by end of July 2020.

He gave the assurance on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, July 14, 2020.

According to him, the work done so far shows that the total value of valid claims is GHS 5.4 billion.

He noted that about 96% of those who are owed have already been paid and the others will be paid by the end of July.

“For depositors, we have come a very long way and I have been able to determine that the depositor base in the three receiverships is in the region of GHS 5.4 billion by value of valid depositor claims…and out of that, I have been able to pay close to 96% of these claims,” he said.

Mr. Nana Nipah added that about 98% of the claims will be paid in cash while the remaining two percent will be paid through a combination of cash and bond.

“I am on course to fully pay 98% of all depositor claims by way of cash…The two per cent that remains is being paid through a combination of cash and commercial paper which we commonly refer to as bonds…Through the very effective and robust validation mechanism that I have put in place, I have been able to save the nation close to a billion cedis by way of robust and resilient validation processes,” he added.

Following the revocation of the licences of the 347 microfinance companies, 39 micro-credit institutions and 23 savings and loans companies, a validation of the affected customers commenced on November 18, 2019, with the aim of repayment.

Mr. Nipah is also as part of his mandate to collaborate with Economic and Organised Crime Organisation (EOCO) to locate and recover the assets of the insolvent companies to auction and accrue funds for settlement.

He says the validation process has helped to identify an amount of GHS 400 million owed to the defunct companies by other companies.

Processes for the payment of valid claims of those who had their monies locked up in the defunct companies commenced on Monday, February 24, 2020 but some persons have complained of not receiving their funds.

However, Mr. Nana Nipah has said he is confident that all those who claim are valid, will be paid by the end of July 2020.

  • Frimpong Manso happy with Kotoko transfer ban

Former Asante Kotoko star Frimpong Manso is delighted by the club’s new policy to purely depend on their current side and youth system for first-team talent.

After constituting a new board in May, club life patron Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has ordered the Kumasi-based outfit to stay off the transfer market for the next year as part of measures to enforce a new direction for the side.

Arguably Ghana’s biggest club and believed to be the nation’s richest outfit, Kotoko are known for their unrivalled financial clout in the transfer market on the local scene.

“I am really excited about the directives from Manhyia [Palace] to the Board to develop Youth side for Asante Kotoko. It is surely the start of an exciting moment for the club,” Manso, also a former coach of Kotoko, told Opemsuo FM.

“In developing the young players, it demands experienced hands that really have the pre-requisite skills about youth development.

“And I would want to plead with the Board to consider the old players of the club who are coaches, and understand the cultural perspectives of the club.

“This is a project that needs support from all and sundry to see it happening soon. It is a difficult project but when it fully matures, its results are nothing short of the best.”

Manhyia Palace chief of staff Manhyia Palace Kofi Badu confirmed this development after the club’s board meeting last month.

The Manhyia Palace is the seat of Otumfuo.

“Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has directed that the club should not recruit any new player for at least a season,” Badu said as was announced by the club.

  • Fuel prices must go down immediately NDC demands

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to immediately ensure that fuel prices at the pumps are reduced.

According to the party, the declining prices of crude oil on the international market, amongst other factors, should have led to a drastic reduction of fuel but the government has refused to do so.

According to the opposition, the call for reduction is to help commercial drivers as they have been compelled to reduce the number of passengers that board their vehicles in order to adhere to social distancing.

Speaking to the media in Accra today, July 13, 2020, National Communication Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, described the increase in fuel prices as unacceptable and demanded that prices be reduced immediately.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we cannot end by urging government to reduce fuel prices, instead of the recent consistent increments at a time crude prices have plummeted on the world market. The need to reduce fuel prices comes at a time government has directed all commercial drivers to reduce the number of passengers they take in line with social distancing protocols. This has drastically reduced the incomes of transport owners who are still being asked to pay more for fuel. This is unacceptable, and prices must go down immediately.”

    Attendant increase in transport fares

Commercial transport operators over the weekend increased transport fares by 15%.

This was after the transport operators made a proposal for the government to allow them to revert to carrying their usual full seating capacity or for the fares to be adjusted upwards by 30%.

After considering both proposals, government subsequently approved a 15% increase.

The leadership of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) is urging passengers to report drivers who charge unapproved fares to authorities of the transport union.

According to them, no driver must increase the transportation fare beyond the 15 percent approved by government.

The Chairman of GPRTU, Kwame Kuma in a Citi News interview said the doors of the national and regional officer of GPRTU are open to help resolve any such challenge especially in cases where the station officers fail to take action against errant drivers.

“At the stations, we have officers there and if they are not taking action, let the region know so that we can work on it and get the local chairman. They need to calculate and make sure that the drivers take the actual fares,” Kwame Kuma said.

On Saturday 11th July 2020, a 15% increment in transport fares approved by the government took effect.

A deputy Transport Minister, Nii Kwartei Titus Glover had told Citi News that the decision was taken after a meeting with transport operators on Tuesday, July 7, 2020.

He said the transport operators made an alternative proposal which was for the government to allow them to revert to carrying their usual full seating capacity or for the fares to be adjusted upwards by 30%.

Titus Glover said after considering both proposals, the government decided to approve the increment in transport fares by 15%.

Even before the amount took effect, some transport operators had increased the fares beyond 15%.

  • Decisive week for Ghana football as CAS is set to rule on Palmer’s case on Friday

The foundation and direction of Ghana football could be shaken as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is set to rule on the landmark case involving Wilfred Osei Kwaku “Palmer” and the Ghana Football Association after 10-month litigation over his disqualification from the FA presidency.

Osei Kwaku, who is the president Ghanaian second-tier Tema Youth, dragged the now-defunct normalization committee to the global tribunal over his unfair and biased disqualification from the GFA presidential race back in October 2019.

CAS will announce its verdict on Friday, July 17 after a marathon 10-month legal battle between Palmer and the Ghana FA.

The decision of CAS will go a long way to determine the future of current FA boss Kurt Okraku as it threatens his reign.

Ghana’s leading soccer news outfit Ghanasoccernet.com can reveal that the Switzerland-based body told the GFA last month that it has set 17 July as the date to rule on Wilfred Osei Palmer’s case that he was illegally disqualified from the Ghana FA Presidential election that brought Okraku to power.

CAS says its panel has sat on the case titled: CAS 2019/A/6517 Wilfred Kweku Osei v Ghana Football Association and the ruling will be made public next month.

The case was brought by Palmer last year after the election that brought Okraku to power but the coronavirus outbreak looked to have stalled the ruling on the matter which prompted hopes among the legal advisers of the GFA leader that the case was dead in the water.

With things beginning to normalize, CAS will announce the decision whether to uphold Palmer’s quest to annul the election and order for fresh polls to decide on a new President for the GFA.

“On behalf of the Deputy President of CAS Appeals Arbitration Division, please be advised that the time limit to communicate the Arbitral Award to the Parties, pursuant to Article R59 of the Code of Sports-related Arbitration, has been extended until 17 July 2020,” CAS’ letter to the GFA on June 18.

The case has got the potential of ordering for a fresh Ghana FA election just nine months after Kurt Okraku won the polls.

This means the world’s sports court body is set to begin processes to put paid to the long-winding legal tussle that hangs around the Ghana FA presidency.

Palmer dragged the Ghana FA to CAS over his ‘unfair’ disqualification from the presidential race in October last year.

The situation has put the presidency of Kurt Okraku on the line with wide-reaching implications if Palmer becomes successful.

There are two things likely to happen – CAS to throw out the case and allow the status quo to remain or order for a re-run of the election if it was deemed the plaintiff was unfairly disqualified from the race.

The ruling from CAS will put to rest months of intense anxiety involving all the principal actors.

Osei, popularly known as Palmer, paid 22,000 Swiss Francs to CAS early this year on behalf of the GFA for his disqualification from the federation’s presidential election appeal case to be heard.

The GFA refused to pay 22,000 Euros so per the rules, Palmer decided to play both so that the hearing can go ahead which means he has now paid 44, 000 Euros which is $48,000.

Some media outfits believed to have received leaks from the GFA that Palmer might not be able to pay the amount which would have ended the litigation that challenges the legitimacy of the current leader of the federation Okraku.

However, CAS confirmed days later that it has received the full payment to allow it to form a panel to hear the case against the GFA over the decision to stop Palmer from contesting the election.

The feuding parties – the Ghana Football Association and aspirant Wilfred Osei Kwaku named their respective arbitrators setting the tone for the adjudication of the matter.

While the association went for Swiss lawyer Hendrik Willem Kesler supported by Naa Odorfoley popularly known as ‘Naa Gucci’, Osei Kwaku hired highly-rated Australian John Didulica with backing from Thaddeus Sory.

Ghanaian music sensation, Sista Afia, has said Ghanaian female musicians are not making the needed impact on the continent due to lack of resources.

In an interview the GNA Entertainment, she said the Nigerian music setting was well resourced which had helped them thrive with the works in Africa and beyond.

“Ghanaian female musicians are doing what they can at the moment. When it comes to vocal delivery, songwriting, and stage performances, Ghana has me, Efya, Freda Rhymez, and more to boast of.

  • The legendary Dr. Afari-Gyan; how his retirement left the Electoral Commission in shambles

When a man carves a niche of distinction in any particular field, he, unarguably, deserves the praise. Such is the story of the legendary Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, whose protracted but dedicated service to the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana will not be erased from the history books. Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan was born on June 18th, 1945, in a small town in the then Brong Ahafo Region. For his secondary education, he was schooled at Achimota School and Adisadel College. He bagged his first degree in Philosophy in 1967 from the University of Ghana and an MA in African Politics from the same university two years afterwards. Afari-Gyan then proceeded to claim a PhD in Political Science from the prestigious University of California, Santa Barbara, at a young age of 29years. He returned to Ghana to work as a lecturer at the University of Ghana after completion.

His remarkable prowess got him appointed to a committee of experts that played an instrumental role in crafting the current constitution of Ghana. For same reason, he was appointed Deputy Chairperson of a provisional Electoral Commission established in 1992 to facilitate the first election of the 4th Republic of Ghana. He led a free and fair electoral process that saw the election of Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, then a military ruler, as the first president of the 4th Republic. Dr. Afari-Gyan was soon endorsed as the first Chairman of the newly created Electoral Commission of Ghana.

Dr. Afari-Gyan served in the capacity of EC Chairman for 23 years(retiring in 2015), the longest any Ghanaian has ever served in that office. His long stretch of service spanning through different political regimes supervised a series of transparent presidential and parliamentary elections that awarded him the national and international fame he enjoys today. He did face some hitches, such as the accusations of rigging the 2004 presidential elections that saw the National Democratic Congress, NDC, drag the EC to court on that grounds. But the most infamous discredit to his almost impeccable tenure of office was the 2012 elections petition in which the New Patriotic Party, NPP, dragged the EC through a strenuous 8-month court process challenging the transparency of the 2012 elections results. He eventually won the case, cementing his record as the most transparent EC boss the country has ever had. He retired from service in 2015, less than 3 years after the election petition that gave him the “pink sheets” tag. His retirement however seems to be the beginning of the woes of the EC.

Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan was replaced by lawyer Charlotte Osei, former boss of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), soon after his retirement. Coming as the first female EC Chair at a relatively younger age and with an impeccable tract record as a lawyer, Charlotte was expected to at least maintain the standard set by her predecessor. Unfortunately her tenure of office was prematurely terminated as she was fired in 2018, after less than 3 years of service, on grounds of corruption and financial malfeasance. Her removal from office, which was challenged by some two personalities but to no avail, left a big scar of mistrust on the office of the EC. She was succeeded by Mrs. Jean Mensa.

Like Charlotte Osei, Jean Mensa is a renowned lawyer, a product of the University of Ghana Faculty of Law, who also claims a great tract record of legal experience. Before her appointment as EC Boss, Jean Mensa was the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), where she worked for 18 years. Much like Charlotte Osei, the less than 2-years tenure of office of Jean Mensa has already been marred with a lot of disappointments and public outcry of disgust; chiefly and currently among which is the new voters’ register brouhaha. Jean Mensa’s decision to continue the voters registration despite the spiking cases of the coronavirus hasn’t gone down well with many Ghanaians.

Having already lost the love and support of the good people of Ghana in something less than 2years in office, how long will Jean Mensa remain in office as EC Boss? Until that blissful magical moment or that Godsent rebirth of Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan resurfaces, the Electoral Commission of Ghana may just be on the ride down the drain of mismanagement, corruption, incompetence and routine change of leadership as different political parties assume office

  • Promise keeper Akufo-Addo will do more for you Bawumia assures Zongos

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has noted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has brought substantial development to the Zongos of the country through fulfilling its electioneering promises to them.

He stressed that prior to the ascent of the NPP to power, the Zongos had no clear cut interventions by government that impacted the lives of the people significantly, adding that the establishment of the Zongo Development Fund and the Ministry of Inner Cities and Zongo Development have been great vehicles that have propelled development of the Zongos.

He made these remarks today while meeting with the Chief Imam to officially inform him of  his renomination as vice presidential candidate for the NPP.

Dr Bawumia appealed to people of Zongo communities to renew the mandate of the NPP in the upcoming elections so that they can witness more development.

“During the 2016 elections campaign, President Nana Akufo-Addo was here and I came with him. He promised the National Chief Imam that should God make him President, he would look after the welfare of the Zongos and Muslims. He will run an inclusive government,” he said.

“As we prepared our 2016 manifesto, we looked at the Zongos and we identified two key problems that we thought God willing if we had the chance, we would address. One was education,” he added.

“It is in that context that President Nana Akufo-Addo did two things. First, he established a whole ministry for inner city and zongo development as well as the Zongo Development Fund with funding provided for in our annual budgets.”

“If you go around a lot of Zongos now, you will feel the impact of this ministry whether it is a classroom blocks, toilet facilities, drainage, systems, water, roads, bridges, clinics, etc. The Ministry and the Zongo Development Fund are addressing many problems in Zongos across the country,” said Dr. Bawumia…The only way any community can break out from poverty, sustainably, is through education and this does not just apply to the Zongos. It applies to the whole world,” Dr. Bawumia asserted.

The Vice President was in the company of the National Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Freddie Blay and Member of Parliament for Okaikoi Central, Hon. Patrick Boamah.
