  • Palmer issues cryptic message to GFA ahead of CAS ruling

Tema Youth president Wilfred Osei Kwaku “Palmer” is in good mood ahead of the verdict of the Court of Arbitration for Sport following his case against the Ghana Football Association over his “unfair and calculated” disqualification from the 2019 presidential race.

Anticipation is reaching a climax over a verdict that could mark a turning point in the administration of the Ghana FA.

The global tribunal has set Friday, July 17 for the verdict to bring to an end a 10-month legal tussle between the former Ghana FA Executive Committee member and the association.

Palmer dragged the FA to the apex of world sports court after he was disqualified from contesting the 2019 Presidential race by the defunct normalization committee.

CAS will announce the decision whether to uphold Palmer’s quest to annul the election and order for fresh polls to decide on a new President for the GFA or allow the status quo to remain.

The Tema Youth boss, who is also an investment banker, is brimming with confidence ahead of the much-awaited verdict.

The situation has put the presidency of Kurt Okraku on the line with wide-reaching implications if Palmer becomes successful.

There are two things likely to happen – CAS to throw out the case and allow the status quo to remain or order for a re-run of the election if it was deemed the plaintiff was unfairly disqualified from the race.

The ruling from CAS will put to rest months of intense anxiety involving all the principal actors.

Osei, popularly known as Palmer, paid 22,000 Swiss Francs to CAS early this year on behalf of the GFA for his disqualification from the federation’s presidential election appeal case to be heard.

The GFA refused to pay 22,000 Euros so per the rules, Palmer decided to play both so that the hearing can go ahead which means he has now paid 44, 000 Euros which is $48,000.

  • Ohene-Bampoe Brenya petitions GFA to amend article 28 on unqualified player

The host of Happy Sports, Ohene-Bampoe Brenya has petitioned the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to amend its Article 28 clause 1 (E) on the unqualified player provision of the Premier League regulation.

Article 28 clause 1 (E) states that a player who has been booked by a referee in three games will not be eligible to play in the next game due to the accumulation of yellow cards.

According to the vibrant sports host, the current clause needs to be amended following the decision to increase the number of Premier League teams from 16 to 18 by Congress.

In his petition to the General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, he explained why the current article needs to be amended.

In the previous football season of sixteen 16 clubs with each club playing at most 30 games, a player is deemed to be unqualified for the next league match after receiving the same number of cautions 3.

There are currently, 18 teams in the Ghana Premier League with clubs playing 4 more games, making the number of games per season 34.

It is in the best interest of the players, the teams, the fans and the sport as a whole to get the best players on the pitch whenever possible.

The possibility of a player getting three yellow cards in five games is higher than a player getting four yellow cards in the same five games.

The Happy Sports host is hoping the GFA will increase the number of cautions in a game to four following the increase in the number of teams juxtaposing it with that of the German Bundesliga which has the same number of clubs in the league that is, 18 and also plays the same number of matches per season 34.

  • ‘I am not ready for Hearts move’ – Danlad

Kumasi Asante Kotoko goalkeeper, Ibrahim Danlad, has said a move to Hearts of Oak seems highly unlikely considering his long term aspirations with the Porcupine Warriors.

Danlad who is currently on loan at Berekum Chelsea has had a successful outing in post for the Blues in the just canceled league having been one of the top-performing goalkeepers.

Reports in the media have linked a possible move for the 17-year-old shot-stopper to Hearts especially after his impressive spell for Berekum Chelsea.

But the former U-17 goalkeeper has refuted reports about his intention to make a switch to the Phobian club.

“I have not said anywhere that I want to play for Hearts and I have not even thought about it. It would be very difficult for Hearts to even chase my signature considering their rivalry with Kotoko.

“The only thing that would trigger a move to Hearts is when Kotoko doesn’t need my services anymore then I can choose to play for the club I desire,” he told GNA Sports.

Danlad was optimistic about a bright future for him at Kotoko and is willing to prove his worth when the opportunity comes but said he was not in a rush.

“Kotoko is my mother club and am very young with many years ahead of me with some experienced goalkeepers to learn from at the club.

“If the chance comes for me to prove my worth, I would give it a good shot and see what happens.

“Since the league came to end, I’m currently waiting on the management of Kotoko to decide whether I should return to the club or continue my stay at Chelsea but I know both parties are in talks with regards to my future,” he said.

Danlad was a member of the Ghana U-23 team that participated in the 2019 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations that was held in Egypt.

  • GPL clubs to pocket $15,000, DOL to receive $7,000 and GHALCA $2,000 from coronavirus money

The Ghana Football Association has agreed to share monies received as COVID-19 relief fund to clubs following a meeting on Tuesday, GHANASoccernet.com can exclusively report.

The decision to split the monies among clubs was taken at a marathon Executive Council meeting of the GFA today, GHANASoccernet.com can confirm.

The monies will be shared among the Premier League clubs, Division One clubs and the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA).

Premier League clubs will receive $15,000 with Division One clubs taking $10,000. GHALCA will receive $2,000.

The first tranche of money from FIFA is expected to be received by the FA sooner, with Premier League clubs receiving $10,000 first and $5,000 later.

Division One clubs will be given an amount of $5,000 from the first tranche, before later receiving $2000.

This will be seen as huge relief for the clubs following the unexpected financial difficulties faced due to the impact of COVID-19.

The 2019/20 season had to be ended following the increasing cases of coronavirus in the West African nation.

This has forced clubs to release players from camp with some teams owing salaries of players for more than two months.

The future of the Ghana Premier League is yet to be decided, with a date for congress to be decided for decision making.

  • Ex-Nigerian leader appointed to mediate Mali crisis

Former Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, has been appointed a special envoy for Mali to try resolve the political crisis in the country.

He is expected to bring together key parties including President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, opposition leaders, civil society as well as religious organisations for a dialogue on the crisis.

Mr Jonathan’s appointment was announced by Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, head of the West African economic bloc, Ecowas.

Mali has been wracked by protests in recent weeks, with demonstrators demanding for President Keïta to step aside over a raft of issues including disputed elections.

The protests have also been fuelled by weak public services and the government’s inability to bring an end to inter-communal and jihadist violence.

  • Coronavirus: Final-stage vaccine trials to begin this month

A US firm has said it will soon start final-stage human trials for a possible vaccine.

The vaccine developed by the US pharmaceutical company Moderna has proved safe and provoked immune responses in all 45 volunteers in phase-one trials.

The last stage of the trials is expected to begin later this month and will involve recruiting 30,000 participants in the US.

Half will receive the vaccine, while the other half are given a placebo.

Researchers will then track them over two years to determine whether they are protected against infection by the virus. Or, if they do get infected, whether the vaccine prevents symptoms from developing.

The study should run until October 2022 but preliminary results should be available long before.

Moderna was the first company to start human testing of a vaccine back in March.

  • Thieves in South Africa steal whiskey after alcohol ban

Two days after South Africa reinstated a ban on alcohol to curb the spread of coronavirus, thieves have broken into a liquor store in Cape Town.

“They basically emptied the whiskies out,” Mark Kallend, shop owner of Liquor Bothasig, told News24 about the incident early on Tuesday morning.

“They ripped the safety gate off with their vehicle… they tied a rope around it and yanked it off. They then threw a boulder through the window,” he said.

Bottles of wine and brandy were left untouched, he added.

Mr Kallend said the incident showed how desperate people were.

In a speech on Sunday President Cyril Ramaphosa said the alcohol ban – the second this year – would take the pressure off the health system.

More than 40% of the 40,000 trauma cases recorded in the country in a week are alcohol-related – something the health system cannot afford right now.

When it comes to coronavirus, South Africa is the hardest-hit country in Africa with more than 275,000 cases.

Deaths resulting from Covid-19 have also risen to more than 4,000, and government projections estimate this could increase to 50,000 by the end of the year.

  • Metro Mass workers threaten to sue government over unpaid salaries

The mother union of Metro Mass Transit Limited, the General Transport Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union of TUC Ghana has threatened to take legal action against the government to demand salaries owed its members.

According to the union, the government has refused to heed to its calls days after employees of Metro Mass Transit Limited embarked on a sit-down strike but called it off.

The General Secretary of the union, Fuseini Iddrisu said they are exploring legal options available to ensure that the government is made to pay the amount.

He told Citi News that staff of Metro Mass Transit are readying to lay down their tools to further press home their demand for the unpaid salaries after the agreed grace-period expired.

“We are a noble union; we know the labour laws of this country. The laws of labour in this country give room for action that will be taken that can become legal actions. Definitely we will go through the process and make sure that we use legal means to address our issues the workers are threatening to lay down their tools because yesterday was the end of the 5-day period,” Fuseini Iddrisu said.

Workers of Metro Mass Transit Limited have in the last few months embarked on various protests to impress upon their employers to pay them their salaries that are in arrears.

In most instances, the protests are called off after negotiations and assurances that they will soon be paid.

Last week, the General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union of TUC (Ghana) directed the workers to call off their strike a successful meeting they had with the leadership of the company where they were given assurances that the striking workers will be paid.

The National Secretariat of the union in its directive said it was convinced that the salaries in arrears would be paid by the government after meeting with management.

The Union, thus directed that “The industrial action should be suspended immediately until further notice. The salaries in arrears should be paid by Monday 13th July 2020.”

“If by the 13th July 2020, the salaries in arrears are not paid, the National Secretariat of the Union will get back to the workers through the Divisional Union Executives with further directives,” portions of the letter read.

Commuters in major cities were left stranded on July 3, 2020, as the strike was in force.

The staff had earlier said they had not been paid salaries for May and June 2020 after taking half salaries for April.

They vowed to continue their strike until they are paid what is owed them.

Legon Cities FC is determined to make an impact next season following a campaign in the Ghana Premier League where they caught the eye of many with their branding exploits.

Formerly called Wa All-Stars, the club was rebranded by the new owners in 2019 and captured the airwaves on the back of several investments.

Not only was money pumped into player recruitment, but the club also invested in matchday side attraction as well.

Speaking to Daily Graphic, Kwame Dwomoh Agyemang who is the Communications Director of Legon Cities FC revealed that they are determined to make an impact next season.

“The rebranding went well, but on the field of play the team could not translate such into success in the premiership before the first round of matches was suspended in March 2020”, he said while speaking on the rebranding of the club in the last 8 months.

He added, “We have spent a lot of money to recruit new players for the second window and none of them has kicked a ball for the club.

  • Government seeks to amend Minerals Income Fund law

A bill to amend the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) Act has been laid in parliament and referred to the Finance Committee for consideration and report.

The aim of the amendment is to clarify the parameters for the operation of the fund, which was established in 2018.

The fund was set up to manage the equity interests of the state in mining companies, to receive mineral royalties and other related income due the state from mining operations, and to provide for the management and investment of the assets of the fund.

The ultimate objective is to maximise the value of the income due the state from the mineral wealth of the country for the benefit of citizens, by monetising the minerals income accruing to the state in a beneficial, responsible, transparent, accountable and sustainable manner.

In the existing act, the fund may create and hold equity interests in a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in any jurisdiction in furtherance of its objects, and the SPV shall be free to operate as a regular, commercial company.

The President, Nana Akufo-Addo, in 2019 inaugurated a nine-member board to manage the fund. He urged the board to use the financial resources entrusted to them to raise indigenous players in the mining sector, which hitherto has been dominated by international corporations.

He observed that after a century of mining in Ghana, the industry could not boast of a dominant local player and indicated that the situation was not good enough.

  • Tax appeals board to cost government GH¢2.5m in first year

The establishment of an independent tax appeals board, under the Revenue Administration (Amendment) Bill 2020, to hear and determine appeals against tax decisions made by the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is estimated to cost government GH¢2.5m for the first year, a parliamentary report has noted.

In pursuit of measures that will improve revenue administration and tax compliance in Ghana, the government has proposed the introduction of an alternative dispute resolution mechanism to resolve tax disputes.

Alternative dispute resolution is widely accepted as the best and most cost-effective approach to resolving tax disputes.

The establishment of the independent tax appeals board to hear tax matters prior to adjudication in the courts is expected to instill confidence in investors and reduce the time spent on litigation for both taxpayers and revenue administrators.

Moving for the adoption of the report during the second reading of the bill, a Deputy Finance Minister, Kwaku Kwarteng, said the bill also seeks to promote voluntary tax compliance and will introduce a voluntary disclosure programme, whereby taxpayers who voluntarily file their taxes, or voluntarily disclose errors or omissions on their filed tax returns, would not be made to pay any penalties that would otherwise have resulted.

This is expected to lead to an increase in the number of corrected returns and of registered taxpayers, especially individuals.

  • Coronavirus: Blogger Emna Charqui given jail term over Koran-style post

A blogger in Tunisia has been sentenced to six months in prison after sharing a satirical post about Covid-19 written in the form of a verse from the Koran.

Emna Charqui, 28, was arrested in May for sharing a message on Facebook urging people to follow hygiene rules in the style of Islam’s holy book.

Charqui said in a recent interview that she had no intention of provoking shock, but found the most amusing.

She was found guilty in a Tunis court of “inciting hatred between religions”.

She is not yet in custody as she intends to file an appeal.

On 2 May, Charqui shared a post on social media mimicking a Koranic verse. In it, the text called for people to wash their hands and observe social distancing in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The image was reportedly designed and originally shared by an Algerian atheist who lives in France.

Charqui’s post appeared during the fasting month of Ramadan and while Tunisia was still largely under lockdown.

It caused a stir online, with some social media users labelling it offensive and calling for Charqui, an openly avowed atheist, to be punished.

Days later she was questioned by police.

On 27 May, following news that Charqui was facing trial over the Facebook post, Amnesty International released a statement calling for the Tunisian authorities to halt the prosecution.

“The prosecution of Emna is yet another illustration of how, despite Tunisia’s democratic progress, the authorities continue to use repressive law to undermine freedom of expression,” Amnesty’s North Africa director Amna Guellali said.

Ms Guellali said the right to freedom of expression extended to what “some might consider shocking or offensive” and called on the Tunisian government to amend the law “so they are compliant with human rights”.

  • Trouble for NDC as Hohoe Municipality records low voter registration turn out despite Mahama’s visit

Hohoe Municipality has shown a massive decline in the number of registered voters in the phase three of the ongoing voter registration exercise.

A visit in the Municipality showed a modicum of registrants in the queue compared to the previous two phases.

The first two cases of the registration showed a total number of about 6000 people who have duly registered.

Today’s visit to the post office, the team saw about 11 people in a queue who were undergoing the registration exercise.

Other centers showed 4 people in a queue who were undergoing the registration process.

This comes as a shock as one would have expected the numbers to shoot up after the visit of the former president to the Municipality.

However, checks revealed that the said day was a market day and many of the residents may have gone to the market, and hence accounting to the low turn out.

The team will continue to monitor the situation and report accordingly.

  • What sin have we committed for you to treat us this way? – Kwesi Pratt to Akufo-Addo

Kwesi Pratt has castigated NPP National Youth Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye and the Electoral Commission (EC) for moving into some Senior High Schools (SHS) in the country to campaign.

The Electoral Commission (EC) last week went to some schools to register eligible students across the country.

The two day special exercise targeted the final year students and those in form-two gold track who were 18 or more but cannot join the main registration exercise because they are in school.

There have been calls from the National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations of Ghana for the government to close down schools and allow students to return home.

Some Senior High Schools have recorded Coronavirus in recent weeks, causing parents to panic.

The Accra Technical University was the first to record a case after a National Service Personnel contracted the virus.

The Ghana Education Service has also disclosed that 55 students and staff at the Accra Girls SHS have tested positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, over five secondary schools in the Western region have also had their students infected.

Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B was also spotted addressing some SHS students despite President Nana Akufo-Addo’s directive that no outsider including parents should be allowed to visit students.

Nana B has come under a barrage of criticisms for going to the schools.

Coming to his own defence, Nana B explained why he went to the schools saying the “Electoral Commission officials, Political Party representatives, and observer groups were permitted to enter the various Second Cycle institutions during the registration exercise which lasted for just two days”.

“Indeed, just like all other political party representatives and officials of the Electoral Commission, I visited the Senior High Schools with accreditation from the EC as a party official. It is important to note that my actions did not in any way flout laid down rules and regulations governing the exercise,” he added.

He further stated, in an interview with Hello FM in Kumasi, that “I didn’t go there to campaign”, stressing “I have accreditation from the Electoral Commission (EC) to monitor the registration and that was what I went there to do”.

Kwesi Pratt is however unconvinced by the explanations by the NPP National Youth Organizer and the EC to justify their actions.

Speaking on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, he wondered why parents and guardians cannot visit their wards but the Electoral Commission deemed it useful to conduct a registration exercise for the students which consequently saw political party members trooping into the schools.

”If the parents won’t be allowed to go the schools because they’re protecting the children. If they even were metal masks, they won’t be allowed to go there; how come political party agents were able to enter the schools? Why do you give political party agents the chance to go to the schools? What are they going to do there? What triggered us to go to the schools to do voter registration? What’s wrong with us?” he questioned.

Mr. Pratt fumed as he further asked; ”What sin have we, Ghanaians, committed against our leaders for them to treat us this way?”

  • GBC ordered to cut down TV channels to 3

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has been notified that the current six channels that it operates would be reduced to three.

The state broadcaster has, therefore, been directed by the Minister of Communications Ursula Owusu-Ekuful to “consolidate” its programmes within two months.

Digital channels run by GBC include GTV Sports+ (a channel for sports), GBC 24 (a 24-hour news TV channel) and GTV Life (religion and culture channel), GTV Govern (a governance channel), Obonu TV (a channel for the people of Greater Accra and window for the Ga-Dangbe).

In a letter addressed to the Director-General of GBC, dated 26th June 2020, the minister said the decision was to free space on the national digital terrestrial television platform,

The letter was a follow up on a virtual meeting between the Ministry of Communications and GBC on June 25.

“This is to ensure that there is redundancy on the National DTT platform which is currently at full capacity,” the letter stated.

“You will, therefore, be required to consolidate your programming in line with this directive.

“Kindly note that upon the planned future expansion of capacity on the network, which has been delayed due to the current pandemic and the uncertainties generated in global supply chains, you will be allocated additional channels.

“Please take steps to implement this directive within sixty (60) days of receipt of this letter.”

  • Will Ghana collapse if no registration exercise is held? – Pratt questions EC

Editor-in-Chief of Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has slammed the Electoral Commission (EC) for refusing to postpone or cancel the voters’ registration exercise.

The EC commenced the new voters’ registration exercise on Tuesday, June 30 despite opposition to stop the exercise.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) filed a lawsuit against the EC but the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favor of the electoral management body empowering it to conduct the registration exercise amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

In spite of the EC’s assurances to Ghanaians that it will enforce the COVID-19 safety protocols, Ghana’s case count keeps increasing.

The country’s case count has risen to over 25,000 and over 21,000 people have been declared recovered or discharged and 139 people have unfortunately lost their lives.

There are however consistent calls on the EC to call off the ongoing registration exercise.

Kwesi Pratt is also unhappy with the seemingly adamant posture of the EC, asking why the Commission wants to risk the lives of Ghanaians all in the name of compiling a new voters’ register.

“If we had not conducted this voter registration exercise, would Ghana collapse?” he questioned.

He appealed for the registration exercise to be possibly canceled to protect Ghanaians against the deadly disease.

“This pandemic disease has spread across the nation and we are saying we should go and register irrespective. When you oppose it, they will say you don’t want to register but you will go and vote during the elections. Why? If we don’t do the register but only go and vote, you have minimized the risk maybe by more than 50%. So, minimizing the risk is also important”, he said on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’.

  • Three years on: Where are the injured Kotoko accident players?

About three years today, the second biggest tragedy in football, in the 21st century happened when Asante Kotoko was involved in an accident on the Nkwakaw highway on their way back to Kumasi from Accra.

The Porcupine Warriors returning to Kumasi to prepare for their super clash against their sworn rivals Accra Hearts of Oak after their 1-0 lost to Inter Allies F.C in the Ghana Premier League.

The accident claimed the life of deputy equipment officer Thomas Obeng Asare and injured several of the playing body including the coach Steve Polack and his assistant Godwin Ablodey.

Three years on, there have been complaints from the victims of the accident that the club is yet to compensate them for their tragedy as the carers of some of the players involved have taken a nosedive.

Today, GhanaWeb looks at the current destinations of some of the injured players and their career progress after the accident in 2017.

Michael Akuffo, Ashitey Ollenu, Baba Mahama, Seth Opare, Isaac Amoako, Richard Osei Agyemang and defender Eric Donkor were among the players who were injured through the accident.

Though some of the players like Ashitey Ollenu, Seth Opare, and Baba Maham are without clubs at the moment, others like Isaac Amoako, Michael Akuffo, Erick Donkor and Richard Osei Agyemang now ply their trade for Premier League sides Dreams FC, King Faisal, and Ashantigold respectively.

Ashitey Ollenu and youngster Baba Mahama, who had huge prospects from Techmina City FC before joining the Porcupine Warriors, couldn’t replicate their form before the accident and hence they were eventually released by the club for non-performance.

Seth Opare was released by Kotoko just a year after the tragedy for failing to impress his technical handlers.

The same thing happened to Baba Mahama as his contract was terminated by the Porcupines a year after, with the club announcing it via its Official twitter handle: “We wish to formally announce the mutual contract termination of Baba Mahama. We’re grateful for his services and wish him the best!”

Meanwhile, Ollenu Ashitey, who has been vociferous in the fight for the club to pay their compensation, also had his contract terminator just a year after the tragedy.

  • The tragic death of Alfred Kotey, a beautiful fighter and victim of boxings lethal business

Little Alfred Kotey died a terrible, lonely and silent death in New York late last month.

Kotey was just 52 when he slipped, stumbled and fell in the Bronx and was taken to hospital. He never recovered and his machine was switched off – the end, but there is so little known about Kotey’s last hours, days, weeks and years.

It was obvious that the man in the coma was a long, long way from the man of 26 who won the WBO bantamweight title at York Hall one night in 1994. He was then a national idol in Ghana, a stunning fighter and I was sent to interview him in Bukom, central Accra, a place with a rich boxing history. He was feted, street vendors sold pictures of his smiling face at traffic lights.

He was nicknamed Cobra, he was a lethal and beautiful little boxer. He had fought at the Olympics in 1988, had turned professional and gone on the road to chase the title like all African boxers have to. The riches, the titles, the fight are in foreign lands.

He made two defences of the world title, made some money and then lost to Daniel Jimenez; in Bukom Kotey had told me that the money from winning the world title would put a new roof on his house. He was not joking, I saw the house. There was always a sadness somewhere in Kotey’s eyes even when he was happy.

When Kotey lost to Jimenez, the defeat was his second in 22 fights. It was, that night in the York Hall ring just over a year since winning the title, the very start of the ugly end of Kotey’s fighting life. He never stood a chance after that and bounced from loss to loss like an innocent victim. He was used, that is the harsh truth, and there was defeat after defeat as he was pitched against top fighters at higher weights in rings across the globe.

Kotey was so tough, so hard that he was only stopped once and that was in his last fight when he was pulled out after three rounds on a show in Accra. Kotey was 44 that night in 2012 and was fighting at light-middleweight, a full six weights above the bantamweight limit. There is blood money in being a loser, especially a loser with a good fighting history; Kotey took far too much punishment in the second part of his career, standing up to some fearsome punchers.

In 2001 he went the 10 ten rounds and lost on points to Acelino Freitas at the time Freitas was 29 and zero, a world champion and he had stopped or knocked out every single one of his opponents. Kotey was paid to take a terrible beating and he deserved every cent he was paid for his work that night in Miami. In addition to the blood money for the boxer, there is enough smeared on the hands of the men that made fights like that happen.

After the final loss, Kotey finished with a record of 26 wins, 16 defeats and a draw. He had a roof over his head at that time, but little more to show for a life in the fighting game. And then it all gets a bit murky in the life and time and death of little Alfred Kotey.

Fight people in New York had no idea Kotey was living in the city. There is no testimony about his plight, his slurred speech, his disorientation, his physical decline from him or anybody in the game. He was clearly a silent witness to his own slow death. He was seen, glimpsed, briefly met, but largely just ignored in the city’s unforgiving way.

People remember now when it is too late and they are scrambling to put together the final days of his tragic exile. There is a bold plan to fly the body back to Ghana, but that will cost. Money is being donated and collected and that happens too often.

The great little fighter with the perfect balance and poise fell over on the street. He had dementia, he then had a stroke, he stopped speaking. And that really makes little difference because nobody was listening. One or two people sat with him as he died, lonely and silent in a foreign land. The nurses stood vigil at the door watching his vital signs diminish as his torture ended.

He had nothing left long before he was declared dead. The roof over his head was long, long gone a pile of rubbish in a Bukom he left behind.

Nobody in the boxing business killed Alfred Kotey, but a lot of people helped him die in such an awful and desolate way. The death of the Bukom idol is another boxing tragedy.

  • Controversy looms as unhappy Bernard Morrison fights to cancel Young Africans contract

Midfielder Bernard Morrison has dramatically announced his contract with Tanzanian giants Yanga expires today having already penned a two-year extension.

The ex-Orlando Pirates man stirred controversy when he stormed off the pitch and walked straight into the dressing room after his substitution in the derby defeat to Simba SC last Sunday.

Last month, the dazzling midfielder told the club he had wanted to rip up his contract so he could sign a lucrative deal with an unnamed club.

Morrison has been at loggerheads with Yanga post-COVID-19 and has made it clear he wants to leave.

When competitive fixtures resume, he did not show up for two friendly matches before missing the league clashes against Mwadui and JKT Tanzania.

Morrison has been instrumental for the Tanzanian giants since joining them in January 2020.

  • US judge rules abortion pills can be posted to homes

A US federal judge has ruled that a regulation requiring that women seeking an abortion pill visit a provider in-person is likely to be unconstitutional during a pandemic.

This means that healthcare providers can now send the pill to patients in the post. District Judge Theodore Chuang did not set any geographic limitations on the ruling but noted states could continue to regulate the drug in accordance with their specific laws.

“By causing certain patients to decide between forgoing or substantially delaying abortion care, or risking exposure to Covid-19 for themselves, their children, and family members, the In-Person Requirements present a serious burden to many abortion patients,” he ruled.

He noted that infringing on the right to an abortion “would constitute irreparable harm”. Putting a pause on the rule amid Covid-19, he added, was in line with public health guidance.

The challenge to the rule was brought by the American Civil Liberties Union, which argued the rule presented an undue burden on women because of Covid-19. Government lawyers had argued that the rule was necessary to keep patients safe.

  • Today in history: Abedi Pele stars as FIFA All-Stars XI lose to Brazil

On 14th July 1996, which is exactly 24 years today, Abedi Pele played for FIFA All-star XI as they lost 2-1 against the Brazil Olympics team in a charity game at the MetLife Stadium, New York, USA.

Abedi Pele and the then FIFA Player of the Year George Weah were the only African players who were selected into the team.

Roberto Carlos scored the match-winner after he took a pass from Bebeto and came in alone on the left side to score in the 78th minute to break a tie and lift Brazil to a 2-1 win over the FIFA World All-Stars. Carlos beat World All-Stars keeper Nelson Tapia at a sharp angle near the post from seven yards out. ‘This win makes us stronger. We didn’t practice as much at Giants Stadium as we would like but still performed well. Under the circumstances with the big crowd and the level of our opponent, we did well and we look forward to our next game against Japan,’ Carlos said.

A record crowd of 78,416, the largest crowd at a sporting event in the stadium saw the match which paired the Brazilian under 23 Olympic Team with the FIFA World All-Stars, who were drawn from 14 different countries. Brazil scored the only goal of the first half when Bebeto, who was named MVP in the game, picked up a loose ball when the World All-Stars’ first-half goalkeeper Jorge Campos made an initial stop of a Rivaldo through ball, but couldn’t control it. It bounced to Bebeto up in the air, and he headed it into the net. ‘This win was a good moral win for us. It will give us lots of confidence going into our first game in the Olympics. The more we play with each other the more in synch we will get,’ Bebeto said.

“This was obviously a big win for us. Beating a team of this caliber will help us going to Atlanta and playing our first Olympic match against Japan. It’s been a while since we played under such hot conditions. This will help us get acclimated to the weather in Atlanta which I hear is quite hot,” said Brazil Head Coach Mario Zagallo.

In the 69th minute, the All-Stars tied the game when German Jurgen Klinsmann of Bayern Munich scored on a right-footed full volley at waist level 12 yards in front of the goal off a brilliant pass from Fernando Redondo on the left side.

“My goal wasn’t that hard, the ball was perfectly prepared for me by Fernando Redondo,’ said Klinsmann. ‘We never enjoy it when we lose, but today was a wonderful ball game. Brazil deserved to win. It was easy to see the difference between the two teams.”

Before Roberto Carlos registered the match-winner to give Brazil a 2-1 win.

Brazil was preparing for the Olympics and we just came together a few days ago. Brazil has a very good chance to win a medal,’ FIFA Head Coach Richard Moller-Nielson said. Campos also played in the East-West MLS All-Star game, the only player to do so.

  • Court sets July 16 to rule on MPs BVMS suit against EC

An Accra High Court will on Thursday, July 16, 2020, decide whether or not to compel the Electoral Commission (EC) to provide Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Ernest Henry Norgbey, with some procurement information.

Ernest Henry Norgbey in March 2020, filed a suit in court to compel the EC to furnish him with some procurement information on the new Biometric Management System (BVMS).

His suit comes after the EC initially refused to furnish him with the information stating that “an applicant seeking to access information under this Act [Right to Information] shall pay the fee or charge approved by Parliament in accordance with the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2009 (Act 793).”

According to the Commission, fees and charges applicable for the said information are yet to be determined in accordance with the law hence the reason such information cannot be given out.

In the suit, the MP is seeking a declaration that the “refusal, failure or neglect” of the EC to furnish him with the information on the BVMS, violates his rights under Article 21 of the 1992 Constitution which guarantees the right to information.

He also wants to know the processes the EC adopted prior to contracting the services of Dr Ofori-Adjei, IT Consultant and Mr A. Akrofi, Procurement Consultant; and whether the said procurements were done in accordance with Part 6 of the Public Procurement Act among others.

Mr. Norgbey is also demanding “a copy of the award letter from the EC to Thales DIS in respect of the contract for the acquisition of hardware component of the new voter management system.”

  • Cristiano Ronaldo’s Ultimate XI: No team can withstand them

Portugal and Juventus talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo is widely considered to be one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, if not the greatest with the striker winning numerous professional and personal honours, including five Ballon d’Or awards.

The 35-year-old has played with a number of legends throughout his time at Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.

The legendary Iker Casillas starts in goal as the Spaniard played alongside Portugal on 228 occasions, with the keeper starting ahead of the likes of United legend, Edwin van der Sar, who made 167 appearances with Ronaldo in the same side.

In front of Casillas, Ronaldo’s players in defence consist of Sergio Ramos and Marcelo as the full-backs while his fellow countryman, Kepler Lima Pepe and former England international, Rio Ferdinand slot in as the centre-backs, with no place for Raphael Varane in the side.

Xabi Alonso, Luka Modric and Ryan Giggs make up an incredible midfield lineup, with the three of them boasting of a staggering 822 combined appearances alongside the Portugese hitman.

The strikers in the squad are without doubt three of the best of their generation as Wayne Rooney, Paulo Dybala and Karim Benzema would not only score goals but also help the midfielders with their hold-up play.

Surprisingly, 25 years old Paulo Dybala make the squad because of his ability to always drop to the midfield to help the midfielders with their hold-up play. He would also create opportunities for his fellow striker and never be stingy.

We’ve seen teams in football, but no team in football history can match this squad.

  • Ranking the top 10 Ghanaians to have played in the South African league

#11 Sulley Muntari to South Africa?

Former AC Milan and Ghana national team winger Sulley Muntari has expressed the desire to want to play in South Africa before hanging up his boots.

He made it clear in one of his recent interviews, though, that if he was to come to South Africa, he would want to play for Kaizer Chiefs.

Goal ranks the top 10 Ghanaians to have played in the PSL.

    #10 Samuel Darpoh

Darpoh arrived in the country as a teenager four years ago, and he’s no doubt one of the promising talents in the PSL.

He has featured regularly for AmaZulu, making 51 appearances since his arrival.

At 22, Darpoh still has a bright future ahead of himself and years to prove that he’s really the best.

    #9 Bernard Morrison

Morrison was one of the best-attacking midfielders whilst on the books of AS Vita Club, and while his performances with Orlando Pirates were deemed average, perhaps with a little bit of patience and more game time, he could have been up on the list.

He scored just four goals with no assist to his name in the 23 matches he played for the Buccaneers.

    #8 Mohammed Anas

Apart from being remembered for his post-match interview where he thanked his ‘wife and girlfriend’ live on TV, Anas has done fairly well in the PSL.

He has scored 30 goals and provided 12 assists in the 112 league matches for all three PSL teams he has played for – Maritzburg United, Free State Stars and now Polokwane City.

    #7 Mohamed Awal

Awal gave his all whenever he featured for Maritzburg United and it was through his superb marshaling of that defense that strikers found it hard to beat KwaZulu-Natal.

He was among the best centre-backs who would storm forward when his team needed him the most. He left the Team of Choice having played 57 matches – scored once and grabbed two assists.

    #6 Rashid Sumaila

Sumaila arrived in South Africa as a young defender and he played brilliantly and won the league with Sundowns before being sidelined.

Despite falling down the pecking order under Pitso Mosimane, Sumaila still managed to earn himself a move abroad.

    #5 Richard Ofori

Arguably one of the best goalkeepers in the PSL right now! Ofori has come a long way since joining Maritzburg United three years ago.

He’s played a whopping 90 matches in three years, conceded 70 and kept 32 clean sheets, and it is no surprise that he’s linked with a possible move to Orlando Pirates.

    #4 John Paintsil

Paintsil remains one of the most respected players on the African continent and abroad after devoting his life to football.

He came to South Africa in the twilight of his career to play for Maritzburg United, and while he played for two seasons, he still added value to his team and played an influential role in helping the younger players at the club believe in themselves.

    #3 Jonathan Quartey

A season in the PSL was enough for Quartey to prove that he’s a quality player and a mature defender ready to play in Europe.

The former Ghana international played for Kaizer Chiefs during the 2008/09 before French Ligue 1 side OGC Nice signed him.

    #2 Jonathan Mensah

Some would argue that Mensah matured too early while at Free State Stars where he played for two seasons before moving abroad.

He’s still only 30 years of age and had he stayed longer in South Africa, it wouldn’t have been fair to his football career.

    #1 Edwin Gyimah

Gyimah is a veteran of 140 league matches in South Africa since his arrival and has shown consistency throughout his career at different clubs.

He has played for SuperSport United, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Orlando Pirates, Bidvest Wits and Black Leopards. His versatility is what makes him a special player and a great addition to any team.

  • “Bale at it again” see what he was seen doing as he spends time of his life on bench.

Real Madrid beats Granada 2-1 as they are now two points away from winning thier 34th laliga title, thier win maintained thier 4 points lead over barcelona in the table with just two games remaining to play so zidane’s side will seal the first top flight if they overcome Villareal.

However Gareth Bale seems to be the talking point as he trends all over twitter, Spending the time of his life on the madrid bench, now that zidane no longer has him on his plans. Gareth bale commitment is doing literally anything other than playing for real Madrid is admirable and extremely funny, first he was seen laughing and using face mask to cover his eyes and now he is seeb playing with a paper.

This obviously mean, he is sad and unhappy with the way he is been treated by the club, I think it better to look for a way out before his career disappears into a distance.

Do you think Gareth Bale Deserves all this attitude by the club.

  • Ashaiman MP threatens to go to court over governments procurement of mathematical sets

The Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Ernest Norgbey has threatened to seek legal redress over the procurement of Scientific Mathematical Instruments (SMI) meant to eliminate examination malpractices in the country.

His intention follows the approval of the $3.2 million tax waiver by Parliament on Monday for the importation of mathematical sets by Messrs Bluegrass Group Limited to supply 853,009 units of Kapek SMI at the Unit cost of ¢75 to the Ghana WAEC to assist in conduct examinations.

But in an interview with Adom News, Mr Norbey said the procurement method used by the Education Ministry is in breached of Section 41 (b) of the Public Procurement Act.

Hence, he is considering several options including legal redress to challenge the procurement method used.

“It is just unfortunate that parliament approved such a huge amount of tax waiver for this illegality.

“This is because I have seen it in a different manner that, you cannot procure a mathematical set, which is a common commodity under single-source procurement,” he stated.

He also questioned why the contract was awarded to the company through sole-sourcing arrangement without opening it to other entities to bid for the contract.

Adding that, the Education Ministry already knew that it had to procure mathematical sets this year, thus, the outfit should have prepared a procurement plan that would have peotected the public purse.

“I cannot fathom why a whole Ministry, knowing perfectly well that these students were to write exams in April if not for Covid-19, will rush to procure mathematical set under single-source procurement,” he stated.

  • Franklin Cudjoe Praises Bawumia

The founding president of the Imani Center for Policy Education has heaped praises on the Vice President of this great country, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on TV3’s Saturday morning show. Mr Franklin Cudjoe is known to be an ardent critic of the government so it his hailing of the Vice President of Ghana, comes as a bit of a surprise. Well there’s an adage in twi which translates into ‘he who performs well, deserves praise’.

According to Franklin Cudjoe, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia deserves praise for ‘elevating’ the office of the Vice President. In his estimation, the office of the Vice President, hitherto Bawumia, was a ‘silent’ one as little was ever heard of or from that office. In fact before Mahumudu Bawumia’s occupying of the office of the Vice President, it was not taken as seriously as it is today.

Although he doesn’t necessarily agree that an occupant of the Vice President’s office must be one with high educational credentials, he does agree that the Vice President must have a fair knowledge of Economics. He agrees that Dr Bawumia’s indepth knowledge on the Economy has helped shape and improve the discourse and debate on the economy.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is an economist and former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana whose extensive knowledge on economic matters and constant critique of the John Mahama led administration, gave the NDC ‘headaches’ in the lead up to the 2016 general elections. The victory of the New Patriotic Party in the 2016 elections can, to an extent, be attributed to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s influence.

Do you agree with Franklin Cudjoe’s assertion of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia? Kindly leave your opinion in the comment box below. Don’t forget to like and share.
