  • Man attempts suicide on Kaneshie Bridge

A young man yet to be identified shocked pedestrians when he tried to take his own life on the Kaneshie Footbridge in Accra.

It is unclear what could probably motivate the rasta-haired man to choose that medium as the best option to exit the land of the living

In a video sighted by Kasapafmonline.com, the man was seen hanging dangerously on some metals beneath the busy footbridge, an incident that attracted a sizable number of onlookers most of whom were stunned by what they were witnessing.

Tried as the people did in persuading the man not to end his life, he remained adamant and continued to hang like a bat.

After their persuasions failed, the people who were not discouraged then decided to map out a strategize to save the man.

They then stopped an approaching TATA bus, mounted the bus, and with the help of a police officer successfully brought down the man onto the roof of the bus where he was subsequently handcuffed and sent to the police station.

In Ghana attempted suicide is a crime.

  • CSOs urge EC to provide face masks at Registration centres

The Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Platform on Good Governance, led by NORSAAC, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to provide face masks to all citizens, who report to registration centres to get their names on the electoral list.

The group also called on political parties to advise their agents to adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocols to ensure that the registration centres do not become breeding grounds for the disease.

This formed part of the CSOs Platform on Good Governance preliminary observation report on the ongoing voter registration exercise from the northern part of the country.

The report was signed by Alhaji Alhassan Mohammed Awal, Chief Convener of CSOs Platform on Good Governance, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Tamale on Monday.

CSOs Platform on Good Governance dispatched a team of observers to 30 registration centres in six constituencies across three regions during the first and second phases of the ongoing voter registration exercise.

The team observed the exercise at Sagnarigu, Tamale Central, Tamale North and Tamale South Constituencies in the Northern Region, Damongo and Yapei Kusawgu Constituencies in the Savannah Region and Bunkpurugu and Nalerigu/Gambaga Constituencies in the North East Region.

The CSOs Platform in its preliminary report said there was no adherence to the COVID-19 protocols at the voter registration centres in the constituencies the team visited.

“It is sad to observe that the assurances the EC gave including having health workers on stand-by, provision of personal protective equipment (PPE) among others prior to the exercise have been largely disregarded,” the CSOs Platform on Good Governance said in its preliminary observation report.

It said “There are worrying actions at the centres from the EC, political party agents and the general public that expose all to the rapid spread of the COVID-19.

“It is serious to observe that in almost all polling stations, majority of the citizens were not in any appropriate personal protective attire.

The electoral officers and security personnel at some registration centres were operating without PPE at the Tamale South, Tamale North and Nalerigu/Gambaga Constituencies,” It said.

It said social distancing was absent at all the centres, describing the situation at the polling stations as “akin to market scenes with some actually maximizing the opportunity of the crowd to do their business.”

Besides, it said, the registration centres had also become rallying grounds for children, who usually trace their parents when they miss them at home.

The CSOs Platform on Good Governance, therefore, suggested the provision of face masks to citizens who turned up at the registration centres to ensure safety at the centres, whilst affording them the opportunity to acquire voter cards to exercise their Constitutional rights to vote.

The group also urged citizens to take personal responsibility in protecting themselves against the pandemic.

  • COVID-19: Council of PTAs calls for closure of schools, postponement of WASSCE

The National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations of Ghana has called for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to be postponed.

In a statement, it noted that because of COVID-19, the students in school are “psychologically unstable and therefore would not be of sound mind to write the WASSCE and BECE examinations and come out successfully.”

It also wants all schools closed down “to avert further spreading of the coronavirus among our children and staff.”

The council came to this conclusion after a National Executive Consultative meeting.

Since schools reopened, there have been multiple cases of infection recorded in schools nationwide.

The council said it had observed that the government had not ensured optimum safety conditions in schools and that there were still “lapses in implementation of the COVID-19 safety measures.”

It noted that there was still overcrowding in schools, inadequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) despite assurances by the state when schools were set to open on June 22.

The government promised that each student, teaching and non-teaching staff were to be provided with three pieces of reusable face masks.

The council also said, “not enough health personnel are either stationed in or attached to many of the schools for routine surveillance due to the pandemic.”

“More worrying is the fact that despite good counsel and encouragement, most parents insist their children should be brought home,” it added.

These concerns have prompted the government to set up a committee to monitor the COVID-19 situation in Senior High Schools.

The committee is made up of Dr. Anothony Nsiah Asare, the presidential Advisor on Health; Dr. Okoe Boye, the Deputy Minister of Information; Dr. Da Costa Aboagye, the Director Health Promotion Division at the Ghana Health Service; Dr Yaw Adu Twum, a Deputy Minister of Education and Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Director-General Ghana Health Service.

  • Togolese arrested in attempt to register

Immigration officials deployed to border towns in the North East Region have called for the cooperation of residents to help identify foreigners who may enter the country illegally to register.

They have also described both Phase One and Phase Two of the voter registration exercise in the area as peaceful and smooth.

Sambruk, Kambatiak, Gbadoug and Mambagan are some of the communities along the Ghana-Togo border.

These frontiers have a lot of unapproved routes.

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) deployed more personnel to these areas with the mandate of ensuring no foreigner from neighbouring Togo participates in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

The reinforcement team together with officers on the ground have so far blocked various unapproved routes in the area.

Speaking at the Upper Najong Registration Center in the Bunkpurgu District, the Bunkpurgu District Commander of GIS, DSI Edwin Adjeitey Doku, appealed for support from the residents.

He revealed the cooperation of the people has led to the arrest of one Togolese national who came to register.

“Last week when the registration was ongoing at Najong, we arrested one Togolese who came to register and it was as a result of the cooperation of the people who gave us the information.”

Asked if they have logistical challenges, DSI Doku answered in the affirmative.

“The unapproved routes are numerous here but our means of transport is limited so I hope our Comptroller General will get us additional motorbikes to aid our operations.”

A resident, Elijah Silim Laar, explained they will not allow foreigners onto the voter register.

He mentioned the foreigners affect resource distribution to the area because they are not counted during census.

    EC voter registration exercise

All applicants who went through registration at the Upper Najong Registration Center did not go through the temperature checking protocol.

The health official assigned to the Center, Yumandam Daniel, told 3news.com that the EC is yet to give them the thermometer gun.

More pregnant women, persons with disability (PWDs) and the aged were in their numbers at the registration center.

According to them, they have no means to go to the office of the Electoral Commission (EC) in Bunkpurgu to register.

But registration officials say, they give them special care.

As at the time of filing this report, more than 30 applicants have successfully gone through the registration process.

Efforts to get the Bunkpurgu District EC Director to comment on the situation yielded no result.

  • Suhum Police aiding registration of non-residents – NDC

Suhum Constituency Executives of the opposition National Democratic Congress NDC are accusing the Police and the Electoral Commission of conniving with the ruling New Patriotic Party to register non-residents bused from Accra and other neighbouring constituencies.

The Party provided pictures and videos purported to be persons transported in busses and other vehicles from New Abirem, Nima, Maamobi, Ayensuano, Gbawe, Kyebi, Ayensuano among others to register in Suhum for a fee of Ghc50.

According to the NDC, their party agents and Constituency Executives who protest the registration of these non-residents have been beaten by the NPP supporters marauding in the Constituency without being arrested by the Police.

They said the Police have instead arrested two of their Constituency Executives, Organizer and communication officer, for resisting the registration of non-residents.

Addressing the media Monday, the Constituency Chairman and his Vice Joseph Apoo and Philip Triku respectively recounted numerous incidents of intimidation perpetrated by the NPP.

According to them the party, they will fight back to defend themselves and protect the sanctity of the Voters register.

They accused the EC of subtly preventing the NDC from challenging suspected non-residents by denying their agents challenge forms.

“The top hierarchy of the NDC in Suhum Constituency is therefore sounding strong warning to the NPP to desist from all these nefarious activities to forestall peace and sanity to prevail in Suhum.

“The NPP cannot pinpoint to any developmental project in this Constituency as being achieved under them so they have resorted to busing in People to come and make that decision on 7th December but trust me the NDC within the Suhum Constituency we are going to prevent that. We are going to vehemently prevent and oppose that whatever it takes we are going to do it, we are not going to take the laws into our own hands we are going to use any legitimate means”.

The communication Officer Daniel Chanor said the NDC will now fiercely resist any attempt to register a non-resident.

“From today onwards we will not sit down if you are immigrant and if because of Ghc50 you want to register here to choose our MP for us then we are telling you that prepare because we also going to prepare ourselves because we have noticed that the Police are not in to help us and the EC is also in bed with the MCE in the fraud”.

The Suhum Municipal Police Commander Chief Superintendent Joseph Owusu told Starr News the allegation of bias levelled against Police is false.

He said so far four persons from both NDC and NPP have been arrested. He said one is to reappear before court on July 17, 2020 while the others are on bail being prepared to be put before court.

He said the Police is not mandated to interfere in the registration process, therefore, urging the political parties to make use of the challenge measures instituted by the EC to file cases against persons they suspect to be non-residents instead of assaulting or Physically resisting them.

  • We will ensure that all eligible applicants are registered – EC

The Electoral Commission has assured voter applicants that it will use its mobile teams to work in all centres that faced network challenges on Sunday to ensure that these centres were not disadvantaged.

Speaking at the Let the Citizen Know, initiative in Accra on Monday, Dr Bossman Eric Asare, Deputy Chair in charge of Corporate Service at the EC recalled that due to network challenges, some centres could not start the registration exercise on time or did not do any registration at all as planned on Sunday.

He said the EC was on top of the issues and was working around the clock to fix the challenges.

Dr Asare apologized to all applicants affected by the incident yesterday and gave an assurance that the Commission will make up for the hours lost by deploying more of its Mobile Teams to speed up the registration of applicants.

Touching on the registration in the electoral areas, he stressed that as long as an applicant lived in the electoral area, the fellow could register in the nearest centre.

He said it was unfortunate that some potential registrants were of the view that because the registration teams have left the centres close to their homes they could not register and vote in the upcoming general election.

Dr Asare explained that the figures that the Commission had been giving out to the public during briefings were provisional adding, “when the registration is over and all the processes including porting of the data are consummated the Commission will announce the final figures for each region for the information of all our stakeholders. All actors are encouraged to reach out to the Commission regarding any discrepancies in the figures”.

  • EC warns political parties to desist from bussing applicants to registration centres

The Electoral Commission on Monday warned parliamentary candidates and operatives of political parties to desist from transporting applicants to the registration centres.

This is so because the political parties know that the people they are bussing are not residents of the electoral areas where they want to register.

Dr Bossman Eric Asare, Deputy Chair in charge of Corporate Service at the EC asked operatives of political parties to stop fronting for people who were not Ghanaians adding, “the Commission needs the support of all our stakeholders to compile a clean register”.

He appealed to the political parties to educate their agents to avoid challenges that were needless saying, “challenges must be based on evidence of people violating the rules on voter registration”.

Dr Asare said some applicants who have registered to vote had been challenged by agents of political parties adding, “the District Registration Review Committees in the districts have started sitting to check whether those who have been challenged qualify to register and vote at the centres where they were challenged,”

“It is important to point out that a number of these challenges are as a result of people who are alleged not to be citizens of Ghana and not resident in the electoral areas where they want to register and vote”, he said

Residents of Shalom Estate, a suburb of Kpone in the Greater Accra Region, have bemoaned their deplorable roads which are death traps, a common feature in all parts of the municipality.

According to the residents, the poor state of the roads had compelled commercial vehicles to abandon the community.

Resident car owners frequently change parts of their vehicles as they bump and wade in the muddy potholes and uneven rocky surfaces.

These sentiments came to the fore during a residents’ association meeting convened to discuss the pressing needs of the community.

The association was formed to provide a united front to push for the needed social amenities such as good roads and streetlights in the community from the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly and other relevant authorities.

Mr. Amoako Attah, the organizer of the Shalom Estate Development Association, told the Ghana News Agency that the community was deprived of basic social amenities.

Meanwhile, residents of Bediako, a settlement in the. The municipality have also accused the KKMA Chief Executive of not being proactive and development-oriented.

He told the journalists that registration of students at senior high schools took place last weekend adding, “the Commission is still looking at the option of going back to these schools in the course of the week to register those who did have the chance to register. This is because reports coming to us indicate that in most of the schools the team could not even register 50 percent”.

According to Dr. Asare, the Commission would endeavour to ensure that every Ghanaian who qualifies was given the chance to register saying that the Commission will also have a mop-up registration exercise for all those who will not be captured during the main phases of the exercise.

Touching on the performance of the officials, he expressed satisfaction at their work noting that our officials continue to improve their performance with the impressive numbers they continue to register on a daily basis.

Dr. Asare said the current phase, which began on Sunday is been conducted in 6728 registration centers and the 267 district offices of the Commission.

“As you can see, the Commission has ramped-up the registration with the doubling of the centers we did last week. This means we are likely to witness an increase in the numbers registered on daily basis this week”, he said.

  • Angry ex-lover of Keche Andrew leaks all MoMo transactions she sent him (video)

The UK-based ex-lover of musician, Keche Andrew, Spendylove, has shown records of some of the money she sent to the musician while they were dating to prove her point.

In a video fast gaining ground on social media, Spendylove screen-recorded the money she sent to one Andrew Kofi Cudjoe, believed to be the real name of Keche Andrew.

The video showed countless transactions ranging from GHc100 to GHc2 000, which she reportedly sent to the musician owing to the fact that they were dating and she was supporting her man.

In the video sighted by YEN.com.gh, some transactions were blurred out because, according to Spendylove, she did not want people seeing who she sent the money to.

However, the transaction she sent her mother (believed to be named Gladys Asmah) was visible for all to see.

Spendylove, who is based in the UK, sent the pound sterling equivalent of the said money to Keche Andrew who received the funds in cedis.

According to the jilted ex-lover of Keche, the money she sent to her man then was pushed into the musician’s career.

    Swipe for more:

Spendylove added that she had moved heaven and earth to get Keche Andrew signed onto a record label.

She has asked Keche Andrew to refund all the money she spent on him or face dire consequences.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that Spendylove claimed that musician, Keche Andrew, dumped her to marry another lady after she had spent a lot of money on him.

The lady, who was speaking in an interview with Zionfelix that was monitored by YEN.com.gh, claimed that Keche said she had not spent a dime on him while they were dating.

She countered his claim and revealed that she had spent close to GHc30 000 on the musician and needed her money back since their relationship had ended in disappointment.

The UK-based lady first caught the attention of social media a few weeks ago when her self-recorded video in which she was seen cursing Keche Andrew and one other person popped up.

Spendylove accused the two people of spreading her sensitive photos all over social media.

She accused Keche Andrew of being the mastermind behind the leaking since he was the only one who had copies of the said photos aside from her.

  • Awutu Senya East: Four NDC agents arrested over alleged forgery of EC accreditation

Four National Democratic Congress (NDC) agents in the Awutu Senya East constituency have been arrested for allegedly forging accreditation cards belonging to the Electoral Commission (EC).

They were eventually let go after a warning from authorities in the area.

The four were arrested at various registration centres in the constituency in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

The District Chief Executive for the Awutu Senya East Municipality, Michael Essuman, led a team to arrest the perpetrators.

“At the end of the day, we discussed and we gave them a warning and then we let them go,” he recounted.

Mr. Essuman said he had noted some disparities in the numbers of party agents leading to his suspicions.

“The distribution of agents is supposed to be balanced across registered political parties so I had to do closer scrutiny of those accreditation cards. Then I realised the NDC people had duplicated the EC sanctioned ones. They had even [forged] the signature of the Chairperson,” he remarked to Citi News.

“I have asked the EC to take decisive steps to correct that one, as of yesterday [Sunday],” the DCE added.

Mr. Essuman further accused the NDC of intimidation.

“We cannot outsmart the system. When they go there in their numbers, they intimidate those innocent people who have come to register.”

  • CAS set to rule on Palmer’s landmark case against FA on Friday

The foundation and direction of Ghana football could be shaken as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is set to rule on the landmark case involving Wilfred Osei Kwaku “Palmer” and the Ghana Football Association after 10-month litigation over his disqualification from the FA presidency.

Osei Kwaku, who is the president Ghanaian second-tier Tema Youth, dragged the now-defunct normalisation committee to the global tribunal over his unfair and biased disqualification from the Ghana FA presidential race back in October 2019.

CAS will announce its verdict on Friday, July 17 after a marathon 10-month legal battle between Palmer and the Ghana FA.

The decision of CAS will go a long way to determine the future of current FA boss Kurt Okraku as it threatens his reign.

Ghana’s leading soccer news outfit Ghanasoccernet.com can reveal that the Switzerland-based body told the GFA last month that it has set 17 July as the date to rule on Wilfred Osei Palmer’s case that he was illegally disqualified from the Ghana FA Presidential election that brought Okraku to power.

CAS says its panel has sat on the case titled: CAS 2019/A/6517 Wilfred Kweku Osei v Ghana Football Association and the ruling will be made public next month.

The case was brought by Palmer last year after the election that brought Okraku to power but the coronavirus outbreak looked to have stalled the ruling on the matter which prompted hopes among the legal advisers of the GFA leader that the case was dead in the water.

With things beginning to normalise, CAS will announce the decision whether to uphold Palmer’s quest to annul the election and order for fresh polls to decide on a new President for the GFA.

“On behalf of the Deputy President of CAS Appeals Arbitration Division, please be advised that the time limit to communicate the Arbitral Award to the Parties, pursuant to Article R59 of the Code of Sports-related Arbitration, has been extended until 17 July 2020,” CAS’ letter to the GFA on June 18.

The case has got potential of ordering for a fresh Ghana FA election just nine months after Kurt Okraku won the polls.

This means the world’s sports court body is set to begin processes to put paid to the long-winding legal tussle that hangs around the Ghana FA presidency.

Palmer dragged the Ghana FA to CAS over his ‘unfair’ disqualification from the presidential race in October last year.

The situation has put the presidency of Kurt Okraku on the line with wide reaching implication if Palmer becomes successful.

There are two things likely to happen – CAS to throw out the case and allow the status quo to remain or order for a re-run of the election if it was deemed the plaintiff was unfairly disqualified from the race.

The ruling from CAS will put to rest months of intense anxiety involving all the principal actors.

Osei, popularly known as Palmer, paid 22,000 Swiss Francs to CAS early this year on behalf of the GFA for his disqualification from federation’s presidential elections appeal case to be heard.

The GFA refused to pay 22,000 Euros so per the rules, Palmer decided to pay both so that the hearing can go ahead which means he has now paid 44, 000 Euros which is $48,000.

Some media outfits believed to have received leaks from the GFA that Palmer might not be able to pay the amount which would have ended the litigation that challenges the legitimacy of the current leader of the federation Okraku.

However, CAS confirmed days later that it has received the full payment to allow it to form a panel to hear the case against the GFA over the decision to stop Palmer from contesting the election.

The feuding parties – the Ghana Football Association and aspirant Wilfred Osei Kwaku named their respective arbitrators setting the tone for the adjudication of the matter.

While the association went for Swiss lawyer Hendrik Willem Kesler supported by Naa Odorfoley popularly known as ‘Naa Gucci’, Osei Kwaku hired highly-rated Australian John Didulica with backing from Thaddeus Sory.

They were charged with two counts of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace, and obstructing police officers from performing their duty.

    Facts

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Evans Kesse told the court that at about 7:20 a.m. on July 7, 2020, the police received information that two men had invaded the E.P. Church voters registration centre in Accra New Town wielding machetes and causing disturbances.

The incident occurred while the voter registration exercise was going on.

Police personnel went to the location, arrested and handcuffed Rashid Tubiga and Osman Abdella, the two men who had invaded the registration centre.

While the police were taking the two persons to the Kotobabi Police Station, five men on board a Nissan pick-up vehicle with registration number GC 3286-19 crossed the police vehicle, attacked the police and forcibly took the two arrested persons away in their vehicle.

    Re-arrest

  • Receiver meets ex-staff of 347 defunct microfinance companies over salaries, exit packages today

The Receiver of the defunct 347 microfinance companies, Eric Nana Nipa will from today, Monday, 13 July 2020, meet with representatives of ex-staff of the affected companies to agree on modalities for the payment of outstanding salaries and their exit packages.

“To ameliorate the economic impact of the resolution exercise on former employees of these affected companies particularly in these times of COVID, Bank of Ghana has agreed to pre-finance the full settlement of employee-related claims which otherwise rank as unsecured claims in the receiverships of these companies,” a statement from the receiver said.

“The Receiver will in the week commencing Monday, 13 July 2020 engage with the authorized representatives of the ex-staff to agree on modalities for the payment of outstanding salaries and exit packages to ex-staff of these resolved institutions,” the statement said.

Mr Nipa further noted that he will only fully settle outstanding salaries and exit packages of former employees which have been duly validated, agreed and in the resolution process.

In May 2019, the Bank of Ghana announced the revocation of the licenses of 347 Microfinance Companies in the country for insolvency.

IN THE MATTER OF THE BANKS AND SPECIALISED DEPOSIT-TAKING INSTITUTIONS ACT, 2016 (ACT 930)

IN THE MATTER OF THE RECEIVERSHIPS OF THE RESOLVED 347 MICROFINANCE COMPANIES AND THE 23 SAVINGS AND LOANS AND FINANCE HOUSE COMPANIES

NOTICE OF FULL PAYMENT OF OUTSTANDING SALARIES AND NEGOTIATED AND AGREED EXIT PACKAGES TO EX-STAFF OF THE RESOLVED MICROFINANCE AND SAVINGS & LOANS AND FINANCE HOUSE COMPANIES

In accordance with Section 123 of Act 930 Bank of Ghana (BOG) appointed Eric Nana Nipah, a Director PricewaterhouseCoopers (ghana) Limited (PwC) as Receiver for the purposes of winding down the affair of 347 Micro Finance Companies (“MFC) as well as 23 Savings and Loans and Finance House Companies (“S&l2 whose licenses were revoked on 31 May 2019 and 16 August 2019 respectively,

The main duties of the Receiver are:

    i. To recover and maximise asset realisations for the benefit of Creditors, including employee claims; and

ii. Distribute realisations in accordance with the relevant provisions of Art 930, to satisfy the indebtedness of these institutions to their body of Creditors to the extent possible.

As you may be aware, the Asset Realisation phase, a key component of the receivership is currently underway albeit at a relatively slow pace due mainly to the following reasons:

    – Poor quality of assets of some of these institutions

    -Asset diversion

    – Misstatement of a significant number of assets of some of these companies in the financial records of these resolved companies,

Accordingly, the Receiver is compelled to undertake a detailed assets tracing and forensics exercise in collaboration with the Economic and Organised Crime Organisation (EOCO) to locate and recover these assets.

The consequence in pursuing this recovery route is that creditor claims including employee related claims in the resolution of the affected MFCs and S&Ls are not likely to be settled any time soon.

To ameliorate the economic impact of the resolution exercise on former employees of these affected companies particularly in these times of COVID, Bank of Ghana has agreed to pre-finance the full settlement of employee related claims which these companies. otherwise rank as Unsecured claims in the receivership of these companies.

The Receiver will in the week commencing Monday, 13 July 2020 engage with the authorised representatives of the ex-staff to agree on modalities for the payment of outstanding salaries and exit pockages to ex-staff of these resolved institutions. In line with the hierarchy of creditor claims set out under Act 93a, other creditors of the failed institutions will be settled by the Receiver upon validation of their daim institutions. – and to the extent that the Receiver is able to realise value from the remaining assets of these institutions.

Please note that the Receiver will only fully settle outstanding salaries and exit packages of ex-staff which have been duly validated agreed and in the resolution process.

Stakeholders may direct all coucerns on the above receiverships to the Receiver, Eric Nana Nipah, at No 25 B Manet Tower B, Airport City, Accra, or on telephone +233 (0) 242 439 441, or visit www.shrewivershinscum.for more information.

  • Coronavirus: Emirates set to cut 9,000 jobs

The president of Emirates said the Middle Eastern airline is set to cut as many as 9,000 jobs because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It is the first time the world’s biggest long-haul carrier has disclosed how many jobs will be lost.

Prior to the crisis, Emirates had 60,000 staff.

Sir Tim Clark said the airline had already cut a tenth of its staff but said: “We will probably have to let go of a few more, probably up to 15%.”

The global airline industry has been severely impacted by coronavirus, with activity all but grinding to a halt.

In an interview with the BBC, Sir Tim said Emirates was “not as badly off as others”.

But its current situation marks a steep turnaround in the fortunes of the airline, which he said before the pandemic was “heading for one of our best years ever”.

The job cuts sweeping the wider aviation industry are fuelling concern amongst Emirates staff that things might get worse.

The BBC understands there is growing frustration at what they see as poor communications and transparency from the airline.

At least 700 of the airline’s 4,500 pilots were given redundancy notices this week, which means at least 1,200 have been told their jobs are going since the coronavirus crisis started.

The cuts have been focused on those who fly Airbus planes, rather than Boeing aircraft.

Emirates flies superjumbo Airbus A380s which hold around 500 passengers. Whereas the Boeing 777s it flies hold fewer passengers and are therefore easier to fill during this period of decreased airline travel.

00Thousands of cabin crew have also been told they are no longer needed.
    Further cuts

The International Air Transport Association, which represents 290 airlines, is forecasting that the world’s airlines will lose more than $84bn and one million jobs this year.

This week United Airlines, one of the big three in the US, warned its staff that it may have to cut 36,000 staff because of the huge fall in demand for air travel.

Helane Becker, managing director and senior research analyst at investment firm Cowen said given “the continuing issues surrounding the pandemic” she expects US airlines to cull up to 200,000 of their 750,000 staff this year.

US aviation unions are pushing the federal government to add to the $25bn bailout package it has provided so far.

As part of the conditions for receiving state help, airlines have to protect jobs until the end of September.

But IATA says there are wider benefits in doing so.

A spokesman said the scale of job cuts in the aviation sector “shows the severe economic crisis facing the industry and all who depend on air connectivity”.

Adding that its perfectly understandable that governments have put restrictions in place to try and keep people safe from coronavirus “but this should be done in the full knowledge of the economic and social consequences”.

The immigrants, which included 24 males and one female and aged between 19 and 26 years, failed to give any reason for their illegal entry.

Chief Superintendent Shradrach Azangweo, the District Commander of GIS, told the Ghana News Agency that the illegal immigrants had been moved to the Aflao Command to assist in investigations.

“They have breached our immigration laws and we would send them back to Aflao to assist us in investigations on how they entered the country,” he said.

He said in line with the COVID-19 protocols, the immigrants were screened to determine their COVID-19 status and were likely to be referred to Port Health at Aflao.

He said he expected the 25 immigrants to be repatriated soon.

Mr Azangweo warned all drivers and “Okada” riders to desist from assisting foreigners to enter the country through illegal means to ensure that the reasons for the closure of the borders were achieved.

“We will advise the general public and drivers to support in this fight since the COVID-19 numbers keep increasing; just report any foreigner to the Immigration officers,” he said.

He warned that anyone who facilitated the entry into the country of a foreigner would be prosecuted.
