  • Five killed in attack on South African church, hostages freed

Five people were killed in an attack on a church west of Johannesburg in the early hours of Saturday, South African police said, with some of the attackers taking hostages who were later freed.

Police arrested around 40 people and seized 40 firearms, including rifles, shotguns and handguns, related to the attack on the International Pentecost Holiness Church in Zuurbekom, police spokesman Vishnu Naidoo told the eNCA television station.

Police earlier posted pictures of some of the confiscated weapons on Twitter, saying they were dealing with a “hostage situation and shooting”.

One potential motive for the attack is a power struggle at the church between rival factions, local media reported.

“(E)verything was in complete disarray, so we have arrested all those that we reasonably believe are suspects, we are busy interviewing and interrogating them to establish exactly what the motive was,” Naidoo told eNCA.

  • Michael Essien, Kieran Tripper back Thomas Partey’s imminent move to Premier League

Former Ghana midfielder, Michael Essien has backed Thomas Partey to move to the Premier League this summer.

Partey, 27, has been constantly linked to Arsenal this summer despite the interest from Manchester United, Inter Milan, Napoli and PSG.

As Footballghana.com has reported, the Ghana midfielder is desperate to move to the Premier League with Arsenal likely to be his next destination.

Mikel Arteta’s side are looking to offload two or three players to land the midfielder.

But according to Essien, who played for Chelsea in the Premier League, the dynamic midfielder will suit the Premier League.

“Thomas [Partey] is such a good player. I’d have loved to play with him,” Essien explained, as quoted by Goal.

“He is a young and talented player making waves in Europe. He is one player I’d liked to play alongside but it will never happen.

“It is their time at the Black Stars now so we have to support them and hopefully they can take it from where we left off.”

However, former Tottenham Hotspurs right back, Kieran Trippier speaking last month told the Beautiful Game podcast that Partey style will suit the Premier League.

“I’d seen him play for Atletico but I didn’t realise how good he is.

“He’s unbelievable, his physicality, how he breaks up play. Technically he’s got everything.

“He ranks as one of the best midfielders I’ve played with, but Mousa [Dembele] is Mousa and he’s on a different planet that guy. Even in training, he was in cruise control.

“Thomas is still a very young player and everyone loves him out here.

“Going to the Premier League who knows? Obviously I want him to stay here because he’s a valuable member to our team.

“He speaks perfect English, very good English. I don’t think he’d have a problem with the Premier League.”

  • KNUST SHS lacks infrastructure to admit new students Nsowah

The Chairman of the Ghana Education Council (GES), Michael Nsowah, has revealed that the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Senior High School is currently facing challenges with infrastructure.

He told Alfred Ocansey on the Sunrise morning show on 3FM that the school may not be able to admit new students due to the challenges with the infrastructure.

“I am aware that the school has a lot of challenges with infrastructure,” he observed.

“In fact, if something is not done, the school may not be able to admit first year students because the whole infrastructure is taken up. These are issues we are dealing with at the school,” he added.

Touching on the call for closure of SHSs in Ghana following the cases of Covid-19 in some schools, Mr Nsowah said it is too early to decide whether or not to suspend schools.

The former Director-General of GES said they will wait for an update from the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Heath Service (GHS) on the situation to determine whether or not to close down schools.

The President of National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, called for the closure of the schools, following the current development at the Accra Girls Senior High School, where six students have tested positive for the virus.

Mr Nsowah admitted he gets “reports every day from my officers in Accra. I have heard of some cases of Covid-19 in some of the schools”.

“For me, it is too early to say that because of that we should close down schools. We depend on the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Services to inform on this matter,” he said.

  • Be coronavirus stigmatization prevention agents – NCCE tells students

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has advised the youth and students not to use jargons as names to stigmatize victims of the COVID-19 in their communities but be agents against stigmatisation.

According to the Commission, any other form of stigmatization was a great threat to efforts to stop the spread of the pandemic.

The Commission has observed that the youth, particularly students mostly developed their jargons and “strange” names to tease their friends in real-life situations.

Such attitudes if not stopped, could drawback the national and collective effort being made in the prevention of the COVID-19.

Madam Doris Gbongbo, the Bono Regional Director of NCCE gave the advice when she was speaking to the final year students of the Nkrankwanta Senior High/Technical School at Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West District of Bono Region on Friday as part of the Commission’s community outreach education and sensitization programme on the COVID-19 prevention.

Mad. Gbongbo implored the students to take up the challenge to be agents of change by educating people in their communities against the stigmatization of COVID-19 infected persons.

She stated “coughing, a rise in temperature and sneezing are normal”, implying that not everyone in that state of health may have COVID-19.

Mad. Gbongbo appealed to the general public to avoid rejecting COVID-19 patients because “having COVID-19 is not a death sentence” and pleaded that “in case somebody tested positive and recovered, let us accept them as our own”.

Mr. Peter Kwabena Gyasi, the Deputy Regional Director of the Commission encouraged the students not to be scared by the COVID-19 situation and rather concentrate on their studies to pass their examination.

He stressed that wearing of nose mask was not a substitute for social and physical distancing and asked the students to avoid crowding themselves and practice all the necessary safety protocols to stay safe.

Later, Mad. Gbongbo and her team were joined by officers of the District Assembly to educate traders at the Nkrankwanta market on the prevalence of the COVID-19 and dangers it posed on human life.

The Commission also held sensitization on a local radio station for the benefit of the entire population in the District and ended the outreach with a visit to Frimpongkrom, a community in the District located on the Ghana-Cote d’ Ivoire border.

  • Uganda central bank threatens to cap interest rates

Uganda’s central bank is threatening to put a cap on interest rates charged by commercial banks.

This comes amid frustration that the cost of getting a loan for businesses, or consumers, remains high – deterring entrepreneurs from borrowing money to invest in expanding a business to create more jobs.

In April, the Bank of Uganda cut its benchmark rate to 8% and then to 7% in June, hoping banks would take advantage of access to cheaper funds to lend more to businesses at lower rates.

However, between April and June, the average interest rate charged by banks on loans has ranged between 17% and almost 19%, significantly above the central bank’s benchmark.

It is a sign that banks want to protect profits from lending.

The central bank has warned the financial industry that it is ready to take advantage of legislation that allows it to set minimum and maximum interest rates.

The Bank of Uganda has previously resisted demands to intervene, to set rates, saying the government should not control bank profit margins.

The financial sector insists the interest rates reflect high operating costs and the risk of defaults on repayments.

  • Final-year SHS students returned for voter registration not exams – NDC

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged that the return of final year Senior High School (SHS) students to school was part of an “illegal” scheme to assemble the students for voter registration.

The NDC’s Director of Elections, Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah at a press briefing today in Accra contended that the decision also contravenes the law which mandates the Electoral Commission to gazette a designated polling centre for 21 days.

“We (the NDC) remind the EC that according to C.I. 91 they are required to gazette a designated polling centre for 21 days. In the absence of that, any so-called registration centre, be it in a school or elsewhere is illegal,” Mr Afriyie Ankrah said.

“It is true that the EC was quick to refer to their mandate as prescribed by CI 91 but they conveniently left out portions of the same CI that compels them to gazette for a defined number of days.

“We refer you, ladies and gentlemen to Regulation 2, Paragraph 3 of the CI 91: “The Commission shall at least twenty-one days before the first day of the national registration of voters, inform political parties and the general public by publication in the Gazette of a place it designates as a registration centre”.

    Unfair exposure to COVID-19

Mr Ankrah said it was curious that while parents were not allowed to visit their wards on campus, EC officials, security personnel and party agents were allowed to move freely in all schools.

He said many Civil Society Organisations and health experts had already advised the government against re-opening the schools but the government still went ahead because of “the hope of winning the election at all cost”.

    Recall

On March 20, 2020, WAEC had to suspend the WASSCE timetable and put on hold the conduct of the examination until further notice in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic that is wreaking havoc globally, including WAEC member countries.

In April, WAEC received a request from the Ghana Education Service (GES) for the council to take the necessary steps to facilitate the writing of the WASSCE for candidates in Ghana.

On Sunday, May 31, 2020, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced a schedule for the reopening of schools, from the tertiary to basic levels, to allow all-final year students to complete their programmes and write their exit examinations.

Final-year students in SHS returned to school on June 22, 2020, after almost three months at home, to prepare for the WASSCE.

  • NDC sues Electoral Commission over registration on campuses

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has sued the Electoral Commission (EC) at an Accra High Court to stop the planned registration of voters in Senior High Schools.

The party contends it is illegal and wrongful for registration to take place at any place that was not contained in a Gazette and notification in accordance with C.I 91.

They want the court to rule that any such registration is null and void and of no legal effect.

The EC has announce moves to take registration to campuses.

The commission further indicated that students who participate in the exercise will be allowed to move their votes to their preferred location later in the year if they happen to reside in areas far away from the schools where registration is to take place.

The NDC is in the High Court asking that an order be given to exclude names of persons who will be registered at “those illegal centres” from the electoral roll come December 2020.

They also want the EC restrained from carrying out such registration.

  • Political parties advised against politicking in schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) on Friday advised political party representatives observing the voter registration of students not to use the campuses for partisan politics.

A statement signed by Mrs Cassandra Twum Ampofo, the Head of Public Relations, GES, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday, directed schools to put in place measures to ensure strict compliance with coronavirus health and safety protocols and asked political parties and observers to respect the measures.

It further charged all heads of schools under the supervision of regional and district directors to ensure that necessary arrangements were put in place for the smooth take-off of the exercise.

The Electoral Commission (EC) upon request from GES on Thursday, July 9, announced in a statement that it would embark on a two-day registration exercise for all eligible Senior High School and Technical and Vocational Education Training students across the country.

The two-day exercise started on Friday, July 10, and would end on Saturday, July 11, 2020.

The exercise is taking place in all schools that did not have polling stations. The statement said additional days would be announced when necessary to ensure that no one was left out.

  • Well use all legal means to stop ECs registration in schools – NDC

A Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Boamoah Otokunor has slammed the Electoral Commission (EC) for conduct a registration exercise in secondary schools.

He said although the EC has started the exercise, the NDC will use all available means to stop the “illegality”.

Mr. Otoklunor indicated despite their disapproval of this decision, they have deployed polling agents to all the secondary schools where the exercise is being conducted.

He told Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that, these newly created centres have not been gazetted to allow for their use in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

He explained to the news team the law states clearly that the EC has the power to create polling stations but when they do so, they must go through the process of gazetting and publishing them to political parties, 21 days before the time.

He further alleged the ruling NPP was using their vigilante groups to intimidate and attack NDC supporters.

The police he noted must step in to protect their supporters of they would be forced to defend themselves.

He advised the EC to ensure the safety protocols in place to contain the spread of the coronavirus at all the registration centres are adhered to.

  • Schools were reopened for voter registration not exams – NDC claims

The National Democratic Congress has claimed that government’s purpose for making all final year students resume classes was purely on political benefits.

Addressing the media today at the party’s headquarters in Accra, the NDC claimed the purpose of the resumption was for the government to assemble students for the ongoing voters registration by the Electoral Commission.

Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Director of Elections for the NDC reiterated per the alleged comments by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister of Information that there might be a possible lockdown after the registration, it confirms the government’s intentions.

“It has come to light the decision by government to send final year and Gold track students to school had nothing to do with preparation towards examination but the hidden agenda was to assemble them for registration. We have had the minister of information giving hint that there could be a partial lockdown anytime soon after the registration” He said

He continued “so what is this whole agenda of asking student to go back to school about? Send them back to school under the guise of writing examination. The student are virtually hostages in the schools because their parents are not allowed to them.”

He sent a message of caution to the Electoral Commission, that going ahead to register SHS students without gazetting the designated polling center demonstrate it’s illegality.

The party is urging them to operate within its own laws and mandate as outlined in C1 91.

“We reiterate our position that the EC must at all times operate within its laws. To this end, we remind that the EC according to C.I 91 they are required to gazette a designated polling center for 21 days. In the absence of that, any so called registration center be it in a school or elsewhere is illegal.

Meanwhile, the EC has begun a 2 days registration exercise for all eligible SHS students across the country.

According to EC, this registration exercise will take place in all Senior High schools that do not have polling stations within the schools.

  • Education Ministry, GES close for disinfection exercise after COVID-19 infections

The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service have closed their offices temporarily to allow for a disinfection exercise.

This is after the Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who has recovered from COVID-19 infection, noted that some of his staff had also been infected with the virus.

The Head of Communications at the Ministry, Ekow Vincent Assafuah told Citi News the disinfection meant workers had to leave work early on Friday.

But he said he expects the staff to be at work next Monday.

Mr. Assafuah also clarified earlier comments by Dr. Opoku Prempeh concerning the scale of infections at the Ministry.

The minister said about 90 percent of his staff had the virus.

But Mr. Assafuah has indicated that “he meant about 90 percent of his inner circle.”

“The inner circle is not even up to 20 so it cannot be that about 90 percent of the staff of the Ministry of Education have contracted the coronavirus.”

  • Noguchi receives more lab supplies for COVID-19 testing

To improve its testing capacity and ensure efficiency, government has procured more laboratory supplies for the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) Institute for PCR testing.

Head of Virology, Professor William Ampofo says some of the supplies have been delivered for onward distribution as part of a bulk procurement scheme.

“We have come up with a bulk procurement scheme to provide sufficient resources to go up to 300,000 per test. This scheme was developed in conjunction with the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health with support from the Ministry of Finance and we were strategic enough to go direct to the source, to China where most of the laboratory equipment and supplies could be competitively sourced.”

“So the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its Ambassador in China has worked on behalf of the people of Ghana to source this equipment at a very competitive price so we can purchase it in bulk. So, I am glad to report that the first shipment arrived on Saturday, on the flight that brought back the returnees. So, we indeed got a significant quantity of lab supplies on Saturday and another flight will arrive today.”

Professor Ampofo also indicated that the centre will soon roll out Mobile Testing for COVID-19 and other private facilities will be accredited to start testing.

“We have also come up with a plan for mobile testing in Ghana and I am glad to report that the GRA and the Customs Excise Division have put this into operation. We have done some training and the equipment have also arrived so strategically; this will be deployed when necessary. To go alongside this, it is also to provide support for patient management at the treatment centres. There is also a plan to establish labs with the capacity to test for COVID at the UGMC and at the new 100-bed facility that has been constructed at the Ga East hospital.”

Meanwhile, the NMIMR has disclosed it is conducting a research study to identify if the persons who are discharged under the new COVID-19 discharge protocols are able to develop antibodies against COVID-19.

According to Professor William Ampofo, the research which is being supervised by the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health said the research is showing “some interesting results”.

He disclosed this on Thursday, July 9, 2020, at a press conference organised by the Ministry of Information.

  • Hushpuppi was kidnapped from Dubai- Lawyer

A Nigerian man accused of a multimillion-dollar fraud and money laundering by the United States was kidnapped by the FBI from Dubai, his lawyer says.

Ramon Olorunwa Abbas – known to his 2.5 million Instagram followers as Ray Hushpuppi – and another cyber-heist suspect Olalekan Jacob Ponle (aka Mr Woodberry) were arrested in Dubai, where they lived, in June.

They then appeared in a Chicago court on 3 July.

The United Arab Emirates has no extradition treaty with the United States but Dubai police said they had been extradited to the US.

A spokesman for the US Department of Justice told the BBC that Hushpuppi was expelled from Dubai and was not extradited. He did not answer how he ended up in US custody.

    What does Hushpuppi’s lawyer say?

Mr Abbas’ lawyer Gal Pissetzky told the BBC that his client, who posts on Instagram about his extravagant lifestyle, was not a criminal and had made his money legitimately.

“He is a social media influencer with millions of followers, with millions of people that respect and loved him, and he loved them, and that’s what he did. In today’s society, that’s a business,” he said.

Mr Pissetzky admits that he is not “100% familiar” with social media and his children consider him too old but he knows “that’s how people make money today”.

The Chicago defence lawyer’s argument that Hushpuppi was paid by designer brands for promotion has set the stage for what promises to be a long trial in American courts.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) accuses Mr Abbas, 37, of conspiring to launder hundreds of millions of dollars from frauds known as Business Email Compromise (BEC) and other scams.

Did the US act legally? It is the latest high-profile fraud case involving a Nigerian national in the United States but his lawyer says the US had no authority to transport him from Dubai.

“In my opinion, the FBI and the government here acted illegally when they kidnapped him from Dubai without any legal process to do so,” Mr Pissetzky told the BBC.

“There was no extradition, there were no legal steps taken, there were no court documents filed, it was simply a call to the FBI. He is not a citizen of the United States, the US had absolutely no authority to take him,” his lawyer says.

But the Dubai police said in a Facebook post that the FBI director had thanked them for extraditing the two men.

“You’ll have to ask them about why they called it an extradition,” the US Department of Justice (DoJ) spokesman responded in an email.

In a statement about Mr Abbas’ initial court appearance, the DoJ said “FBI special agents earlier this week obtained custody of Abbas and brought him to the United States” without giving any further details.

    Mr Pissetzky is not convinced.

“If Dubai wanted to expel him, they should have expelled him back to Nigeria. I’ve never heard of anything like that. That is the real story here.”

    What is he accused of?

Ray Hushpuppi was already popular on Instagram for his luxurious lifestyle documented exhaustively on his page but he has gained another 100,000 followers since his dramatic arrest.

At the time, Dubai police said they recovered $40m (£32m) in cash, 13 luxury cars worth $6.8m, 21 computers, 47 smartphones and the addresses of nearly two million alleged victims.

  • Friday Debate: Would Ghana have performed better if Essien had played in the 2010 World Cup?

The Black Stars of Ghana joined the table of men on the African stage after becoming the third country from the continent to feature in the quarter-final stage of the FIFA World Cup.

In the history of the FIFA World Cup which started in 1930, Cameroon was the first African country to play in the quarter-finals in 1990, before Senegal 2002 and Ghana in the 2010 edition which was hosted by South Africa.

The Black Stars in the 2010 edition of the Mondial, had the likes of Stephen Appiah, Kevin Prince Boateng, Sulley Ali Muntari, Anthony Annan, and youngsters, Andre Dede Ayew, Kwadwo Asamoah and Emmanuel Agyemang Badu as their midfield options, but Ghana lost the services of midfield maestro Michael Essien to injury.

The Chelsea legend couldn’t make it to the squad after his injury in Ghana’s first group game against Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola that same year.

The difficulty the Stars went through in their group game against Germany and the quarter-final game Uruguay made many wish they had Essien in that team, as they firmly believed that the UEFA Champions League winner would have made a big difference for Ghana in the tournament.

But today on the 9th edition of GhanaWeb Friday debate, we ask if Ghana Would have performed better if Essien had played in the 2010 World Cup?

  • Conduct mass testing in schools with COVID-19 cases GNAT to government

The Ghana National Association of Teachers expects mass testing in schools that have recorded cases of COVID-19.

Philippa Larsen, the GNAT President, said the government had “promised” that such mass testing would be in order in the event of recorded cases.

Accra Girls SHS, Konongo Wesley SHS and Mfanstiman Girls SHS are among the schools with confirmed cases of the virus.

“We were informed that anytime there is the information of a confirmed case in a particular school, students and staff of the school will go through the testing,” she recounted on the Citi Breakfast Show.

GNAT, along with other teacher unions and observers, had initially proposed mass testing before school resumed on June 22.

But the government has consistently argued that mass testing is not feasible.

With the recorded cases, however, Ms. Larsen said: “We expect that the schools that have recorded cases should have their staff and students go through the testing.”

    Inadequate of PPE

One of the main challenges GNAT has observed has been the inadequate supply of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

The government assured that each student, teaching and non-teaching staff will be provided with three pieces of reusable face masks.

Two of these were to be ready within two weeks of schools resuming.

But Ms. Larsen noted that schools were still lacking PPE, as well as other accoutrements like thermometer guns, sanitizers etc.

“We are not too happy about the fact that schools have not received the full complement of their logistics,” she said.

Eighteen thousand Veronica Buckets, 800,000 pieces of 200-millilitre sanitisers, 36,000 rolls of tissue paper, 36,000 gallons of liquid soap and 7,200 thermometer guns were supposed to be supplied to the schools.

Despite the challenges, the GNAT president acknowledged that schools were largely adhering safety protocols.

“Work is going on in the schools; the way they have arranged their beds and all. I visited some of the dormitories and I was impressed, to be honest with you.”

  • GES warns party agents as registration begins in SHSs

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has asked political party agents assigned to senior high schools where the new voter registration is going to take place to conduct themselves according to law.

The Service warned that the schools cannot be used as a place for partisan politicking.

These were contained in a statement issued on Friday, July 10 as the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) sets up registration centres in all senior high schools.

The EC at an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) decided to send registration officials to senior high schools to register students who have turned 18 years and above and eligible to vote.

The exercise will take two days Friday and Saturday.

The EC directed political parties to assign agents to schools where registration centres will be set up.

But in its statement signed by Head of Public Relations Unit Cassandra Twum Ampofo, the GES noted that all heads of schools under the supervision of regional and district directors of education have been directed to ensure that necessary arrangements are made for a smooth exercise.

“The schools have been directed to put in measures to ensure strict compliance with the Covid-19 health and safety protocols and it is the expectation of management of GES that officials of Electoral Commission and the political party representatives, as well as any observer groups present, will do same during the period.”

The new registration of eligible voters began nationwide on Tuesday, June 30.

It is scheduled to end on Thursday, August 6.

  • How the US caught flashy Nigerian Instagrammers ‘with $40m’

The day after his 29th birthday in May, Olalekan Jacob Ponle posted a picture on his Instagram standing next to a bright yellow Lamborghini in Dubai.

“Stop letting people make you feel guilty for the wealth you’ve acquired,” he admonished, wearing designer jewellery and Gucci clothes from head to toe.

A month later, the Nigerian, who goes by the name “mrwoodbery” on Instagram, was arrested by Dubai Police for alleged money laundering and cyber fraud.

The most famous of the dozen Africans nabbed in the dramatic operation was 37-year-old Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, “hushpuppi” or just “hush” as he was known by his 2.4 million Instagram followers.

Police in the emirate say they recovered $40m (£32m) in cash, 13 luxury cars worth $6.8m, 21 computers, 47 smartphones and the addresses of nearly two million alleged victims.

Mr Abbas and Mr Ponle were both extradited to the US and charged in a Chicago court with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and laundering hundreds of millions of dollars obtained from cybercrimes.

The two have not yet been asked to plead and are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“I think there’s probably a certain arrogance when they believe they’ve been careful about maintaining anonymity in their online identities, but they live high on the hog and get careless on social media,” said Glen Donath, a former senior prosecutor in the US Attorney’s Office in Washington, DC.

It is a spectacular crash for the two Nigerian men who extensively documented their high-flying lifestyle on social media, raising questions about the sources of their wealth.

They unwittingly provided crucial information about their identities and activities for American detectives with their Instagram and Snapchat posts.

They are accused of impersonating legitimate employees of various US companies in “business email compromise” (BEC) schemes and tricking the recipients into wiring millions of dollars into their own accounts.

On Instagram, hushpuppi said he was a real estate developer and had a category of videos called “Flexing” – social media lingo for showing off. But the “houses” were actually a codeword for bank accounts “used to receive proceeds of a fraudulent scheme”, investigators allege.

“Our value system in Nigeria needs to be checked, especially the emphasis we place on wealth, no matter how you got it,” the economist Ebuka Emebinah told the BBC from New York.

“It’s a culture where people believe that results speak for you. We don’t place as much emphasis on the process and this has built up over time.”

    English Premier League team targeted

In April, hushpuppi renewed his lease for another year at the exclusive Palazzo Versace apartments in Dubai under his real name and phone number.

“Thank you, Lord, for the many blessings in my life. Continue to shame those waiting for me to be shamed,” he captioned an Instagram picture of a Rolls-Royce just a fortnight before he was arrested.

“Abbas finances this opulent lifestyle through crime, and he is one of the leaders of a transnational network that facilitates computer intrusions, fraudulent schemes (including BEC schemes), and money laundering, targeting victims around the world in schemes designed to steal hundreds of millions of dollars,” the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) said in an affidavit.

In one case, a foreign financial institution allegedly lost $14.7m in a cyber-heist where the money ended up in hushpuppi’s bank accounts in multiple countries.

The affidavit also alleged that he was involved in a scheme to steal $124m from an unnamed English Premier League team.

The FBI obtained records from his Google, Apple iCloud, Instagram and Snapchat accounts which allegedly contained banking information, passports, communication with conspirators and records of wire transfers.

About 90% of business email compromise scams originate in West Africa, research from American email security firm Agari shows.

    ‘Yahoo boys’

The complaint against Mr Abbas and Mr Ponle describe tactics that resemble what the company calls Vendor Email Compromise tactics, where scammers compromise an email account and study communication between a customer and a vendor.

“The scammer would gather contextual details, as they watched the legitimate email flow,” explains Crane Hassold, Agari’s senior director of threat research.

“The bad actor would redirect emails to the bad actor’s email account, craft emails to the customer that looked like they are coming from the vendor, indicate that the ‘vendor’ had a new bank account, provide ‘updated’ bank account information and the money would be gone, at that point.”

Mr Ponle, known online as “mrwoodberry”, used Mark Kain in emails, according to the FBI.

He is accused of defrauding a Chicago-based company into sending wire transfers of $15.2m. Companies in Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New York, and California are also said to have fallen victim.

The cash trail allegedly disappeared after his accomplices, called money mules, converted the money into the cryptocurrency bitcoin.

Email scams have become so prevalent globally, and so deeply linked to Nigeria, that the fraudsters have a name in the country: “Yahoo boys”.

They try to convince a recipient to wire money to the other side of the world or they go “phishing”, stealing a user’s identity and personal information for fraud.

The FBI warns against the Nigerian letter or “419” fraud – emails promising large sums of money, called advance fee scams. The “Nigerian prince” trope has become shorthand for deception.

  • Nigeria’s China virus compensation case ‘frivolous’

China has dismissed as “frivolous” an attempt by Nigerian lawyers to get compensation for the coronavirus pandemic, which began in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

The 11 lawyers accuse China of failing to promptly inform the World Health Organization (WHO) about the virus.

They are demanding $200bn (£158bn) in damages for the “loss of lives, economic strangulation, trauma, hardship, social disorientation, mental torture and disruption of normal daily existence of people in Nigeria”.

But the Chinese embassy in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, said the case lacked basis in international law.

“Covid-19 has caught the whole world by surprise. China, like other countries, is a victim. Confronted by an unknown virus, we have acted responsibly to protect people’s life and health and safeguard global public health,”it said in statement on Twitter.

“China was the first country to report cases to WHO and promptly share information with relevant countries and regions, the first to sequence the genome of the virus and share it with the world, the the first to publish guidelines for treatment and containment.

“In the fight against Covid-19, solidarity and co-operation is our most powerful weapon.”

The embassy urged the lawyers, who are planning to persuade the government to institute a state action against China at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, to do more to enhance mutual trust rather than hyping up the situation.

The case has yet to be heard at Nigeria’s High Court.

  • Sudan’s PM fires ministers over slow reforms

Sudan’s prime minister has replaced four key ministers after protests over the slow pace of reform following the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir as president last year.

Abdalla Hamdok dismissed the health minister and accepted the resignations of the three others – in charge of finance, foreign affairs, and energy, the government said.

Correspondents say the Sudanese economy was already in a crisis before the impact of the coronavirus so the new finance minister faces a daunting task amid worsening food and fuel shortages.

On Sunday Mr Hamdok – who heads a power-sharing interim government with the military – replaced the police chief and his deputy.

  • Nigerian soldiers ambushed on reopened highway

Islamist militants launched a deadly ambush on Nigerian soldiers who were travelling on Tuesday on a key highway that re-opened in January after being closed last year because of frequent attacks.

At least 23 soldiers are reported to have been killed in the attack, which took place approximately 40km (25 miles) from Maiduguri, the main city in north-eastern Borno state.

The death toll is yet to be confirmed but the military has acknowledged it took place in the village of Bulabulin, on the road between Maiduguri and Damboa.

The army, which often downplays its losses, said in a statement that only two soldiers had been killed as well as 17 militants.

The Islamic State West Africa Province (Iswap), a Boko Haram faction, said it was behind the attack, saying 40 soldiers were killed.

The splinter group has carried out a number of devastating attacks this year, killing 81 people in the village of Gubio in June, as well as striking the garrison town of Monguno.

Militant Islamist group Boko Haram and its offshoots have waged a brutal insurgency in Nigeria since 2009.

  • Mpraeso SHS authorities await results of nine students in COVID-19 isolation

School authorities at the Mpraeso Senior High School in the Eastern Region are awaiting results of some nine students believed to have contracted COVID-19.

Even though the said students have been identified and isolated, the development has thrown the student populace into a state of fear and apprehension.

“They have been isolated from the rest of the students and their samples have been taken [as of Tuesday]. All the samples were sent to Accra for confirmation,” the Kwahu South Director of Education, Ofosu Kwakye, said.

“We are waiting for the lab results to come so we know the situation,” he added.

Mr Kwakye also added that measures have been taken to ensure the rest of the students are safe.

“Their food has been enhanced. We give them fruits and other things as we await the results,” he said.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) are currently tracing contacts of infected persons in other schools.

The Accra Girls SHS and the Konongo Wesley SHS are among the schools with confirmed cases of the virus.

The GES has however appealed for calm among parents and assured that officials are working to ensure the safety of their wards.
