  • Elmina Sharks owner Paa Kwesi Nduom criticises GFA decision to cancel season

Owner of Ghanaian top-flight side Elmina Sharks, Paa Kwesi Nduom has criticised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for cancelling the 2019/20 season as a result of the coronavirus.

After months of uncertainty, the GFA took the decision to cancel the season which had been suspended for more than four months due to the outbreak of the virus in Ghana. The decision was taken after a reported seven-hour meeting by the Executive Council.

But the business consultant, who on three occasions contested the Ghana presidency, claims the local football governing had no locus to cancel the season without consulting the club owners, who are the ones investing in the football.

He wondered why such a unilateral decision could be taken when the GFA was merely an administrative body.

“Who is this that is cancelling this league, and who is this that is considering the financial and the health impact of all of this?” he inquired during an interview with UK-based GN Radio and Channel 7 TV.

Nduom condemned the GFA for snubbing him and other club owners before taking the decision last week.

“It is not the club owners, and strange enough in Ghana, it is not the club owners who are calling for the cancellation, and nobody called me as a club owner to ask me what my opinion to be done is.”

“We have people they’re calling as football administrators; a football administrator doesn’t have a penny or a pesewa in the game. Somebody who is elected by people we have employed to work for us cannot tell me, and shouldn’t be put in a position to tell me what I should and should not do,” he said.

“It should not be up to the government to tell a private enterprise what to do, except what the government is telling everybody else what to do.

“It is about time that the people who have invested in football as private enterprises that we are should be the ones calling for the cancellation of football in Ghana and that a league should be there that is owned, managed and controlled by those who have invested in football in Ghana.

“This is what happens in the UK and those administrators they’ve hired, they come and go, but it is the owners who make the decisions,” he noted.

“Owners of the big clubs in the English Premier League get together and they have a strong affiliation to help each other in terms of commercial, there’s nothing that stops Ghana from doing that same financial consideration.

“It is the owners who should have sat down to decide [whether] we can handle it this way or not, but nobody talked to us. I hear that there was a call among the managers of the teams but the managers that I have recruited and I pay cannot go and make decisions for me”, he stated.

  • Voter Registration: Muntaka alleges busing of SHS students to registration centres

Member of Parliament for Asawase, Mohammed-Muntaka Mubarak has alleged busing of final year and form two Gold Track Senior High Students to register in the ongoing voter registration exercise in his constituency.

In a letter written to the Ghana Education Service (GES), the legislator alleges that there have been two separate incidences of students being bused to registration centres to register even though they do not hail from the Asawase constituency.

The Asawase legislator, in the letter, is calling for the intervention of the GES to stop any of such incidents from happening again.

He also accused the teachers and students who have taken part in the alleged act of breaking the Representation of People Law 1993 PNDCL 284. He also raised concerns about the risk of exposing the students to COVID-19.

In the letter, he indicates that “about thirty students of the Asanteman Senior High School were bused to two polling centres at Asabi-a suburb of the Asokore Manpong Municipal which makes up the Asawase Constituency. They were identified as not living, residing or hailing from any of the Asokore Manpong Municipal (Asawase Constituency) towns or communities and for that matter the Asawase Constituency.”

He also added that the students accused one Mr Bismark Fordjour (AKA Anadwo) of busing them to the registration centre.

The letter also indicated that as part of efforts to prevent the students from getting lynched, they handed them over to the Asokore Manpong District Police Command.

According to Muntaka Mubarak, “further checks also revealed that Bismark Fordjour is a tutor at the Asanteman Senior High School.”

The letter also alleged that some students of the Osei Kyeretwei Secondary School at Parkuso, some of which are minors, were bused to some polling stations to register even though they do not reside in the area.

    Media reports and earlier allegations

Seven out of twenty-one final year students of Asanteman Senior High school allegedly bused by a tutor Bismark Okyere to register in the Asawase Constituency were arrested on Friday, July 03, 2020.

One student was first arrested when he was spotted in a queue attempting to register.

The student upon sensing danger following the anger of the NDC supporters at the registration centre attempted to run but luck eluded him when he was apprehended.

The timely intervention of the Incumbent MP for the constituency Muntaka Mohammed halted attempts by supporters of the NDC to attack him.

The student then confessed he was bused to the registration centre by his teacher with 20 other final year students.

He quickly pointed 6 other students who were already in the queue to register. They were also arrested.

Member of Parliament for Asawase, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak had earlier vowed to fight and prevent what he terms as a plot by his opponents to bus non-residents into the constituency to register for voters ID.

He told the media that his team is fully aware of the conspiracy, stressing that perpetrators will have themselves to blame.

  • Committee tasked to look into COVID-19 challenges in schools

The government has set up a committee to look into health-related incidents in Senior High Schools.

This follows reports of COVID-19 infections in schools and the death of a final-year student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Senior High School from health complications and alleged negligence.

The committee is to monitor schools over the next eight weeks as most Senior High School students prepare for the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).

Schools have been back in session since June 22 after initially being shut down for safety concerns.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, July 9, 2020, the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said the committee will also “oversee the operations of the regional monitoring teams which are already in place across the various regions.”

“The president has tasked a subcommittee of the COVID-19 Presidential taskforce to be set up to quickly address challenges that may arise in the next eight weeks while final year students are in school.”

The committee is to also “ensure that guidelines of campus quarantine are strictly enforced and any gaps swiftly addressed where incidents are suspected.”

For anxious parents, the Minister said the COVID-19 information centre was being given additional persons to cater to them.

The 311 has mainly served as a helpline for reporting suspected cases and receiving feedback from health workers.

“So if you are a parent and you are reading a story online and you are hearing something, we encourage you to call 311 from tomorrow. Dedicated officers are being put there to help connect parents to the schools to validate whether some of the reports are true,” Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said.

This is to discourage parents from gathering at schools as was the case at Accra Girls Senior High School after reports of COVID-19 infection.

Accra Girls SHS, Konongo Wesley SHS and Mfanstiman Girls SHS are among the schools with confirmed cases of the virus.

    Possible shutdown of schools

The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) is concerned about the increasing negative reports and expects schools to shut down if the situation does not improve.

In a statement, the group warned that the shutdown of the schools “will be inevitable” on the current trajectory.

It said “chaotic incidences” were putting students “in great fear and danger”.

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) President, Angel Carbonu, however, wants the government to concede defeat and shut down schools before the situation worsens.

“From where I sit now before we get to a point where we cannot control, I think we should bite the bullet and close down the schools. That is my personal opinion. The way things are going, I can assure you the story is not looking too pleasant,” he said.

  • GFA postpones meeting on new season discussion

Ghana Football Association (GFA) has rescheduled its Executive Council meeting originally slated for Thursday for discussing issues surrounding the canceled domestic season and modalities towards the commencement of a new term.

Last month, football’s governing body permanently terminated the 2019-20 campaign after three months of a standstill due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The outfit had hoped to promptly convene on Thursday to decide the way forward, particularly for the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council has moved its upcoming meeting to Tuesday, July 14, 2020,” the GFA announced on its official website on Wednesday

“The meeting will be done through video conferencing.

“The body was supposed to meet on Thursday, July 9, 2020, to take decisions on Congress and plans for a new season.

“Matters to be discussed include the date and agenda for Congress, the date for player registration and modalities leading to the start of the 2020-21 season.

“Last week, the Council took a decision to cancel the 2019-20 football season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.”

The Premier League was at the matchweek 15 stage when it was halted by the coronavirus disease.

Ghana’s ban on all contact sports, including football, remains in effect until at least July 31.

Following the recent return of some national leagues in England, Spain, Germany and Italy, there had been calls for Ghana to follow suit.

Before terminating the campaign, the GFA revealed it was engaging the Government of Ghana over the possible resumption of football under strictly safe protocols such as playing matches behind closed doors, having had a first request rejected.

The rising number of infection cases in the west African country, however, left concerns about the quest for football resumption.

At the time of temporary suspension, a total of six cases had been recorded.

As at June 30 when the season was permanently cancelled, the west African nation had registered 17,1741 cases involving 113 deaths, 13,268 recoveries and 4,361 active cases.

Top executives from Premier League clubs Berekum Chelsea, Eleven Wonders and King Faisal advocated for the total cancellation of the 2019-20 season over safety concerns amid resuming football under the coronavirus conditions.

Some of the students, he noted were arrested and handed over to the police after they were saved from lynching by angry residents.

“It is, however, important to note that the teacher could not be reached via phone contacts after several attempts,” Mr Muntaka said.

The MP is worried that despite government preventing parents from visiting their wards as restrictions on educational activities are being lifted, the teachers are moving the same students out of school for political interest.

African Entertainment recently caught up with Karikari who opened up about what her life now looks like, ideals and all.

Seeing as the whole world is learning to adjust to the novel Coronavirus with economies facing a major recession, the beauty queen reveals it’s now or never for Ghanaians especially within the entertainment industry to come up with dynamic strategies.

“We have all realized that coronavirus is here to stay so now is the time to create strategies on how to make the industries grow. Things have changed from here on forth. It is never going to be the same and social distancing is going to be here for a very long time as well. So, everyone needs to find strategies that will benefit them.”

“You know how I had always thought that winning Miss Ghana was the happiest thing that could happen to me, that was till I had my son. I have actually been a mom for almost two years now and I can say that having him remains one of the happiest moments of my life. It definitely felt better than winning Miss Ghana.”

“My statement about not proposing to a man still stands. It is just my personal opinion. I believe in women empowerment and all that but at the same time I also believe that the man is the head.”

  • A/R NPP on alert after disqualified MP aspirant in Bekwai moves to run as independent

A lawyer, Akwasi Amofa-Agyemang, has declared his intentions to contest the 2020 Parliamentary elections as an independent candidate for the Bekwai Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

Ahead of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries, he was disqualified from contesting allowing the incumbent, Joseph Osei-Owusu, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, to run unopposed.

But following the recent developments, Ashanti Region NPP is rushing to dissuade Mr. Amofa-Agyemang from proceeding with his plans.

The Ashanti Regional Organiser for the NPP, Francis Adumako says, the party will find a solution to the impasse which he described as unfortunate.

“As a matter of urgency, the leaders of the party in the region will call all such people for a meeting and we will see how best we will address issues of this nature.”

Mr. Adumoko said it was imperative such sentiments were quelled before the spread to other constituencies.

“If we allow things of this sort to happen, today, one will erupt from Bekwai. Another one will erupt from a different place and it will go on and on and on.”

Mr. Amofa-Agyemang, announcing his intentions on Tuesday, said his decision was informed by growing calls from constituents for him to go independent following his disqualification.

“After wide consultations of diverse background, I have decided to respond to the persistent calls from the constituents of Bekwai to contest the election as an independent candidate.”

“I do this with mixed emotions; one of disappointment and the other a great sense of responsibility,” he said.

The Parliament hopeful lamented that “all my relentless efforts to contest the elections on the ticket of my party yielded nothing.”

But he said he had “a great sense of responsibility towards our people who have reposed so much confidence in me not to let them down.”

  • EC exceeds target

The Electoral Commission (EC) yesterday commenced a biweekly update engagement with the media and announced that the registration centres were exceeding their daily targets of 100.

Some centres recorded about 200, a figure which was beyond the expected target. In all cases, the newly acquired BVRs are performing faultlessly, a departure from previous times, Dr. Serebuor Quaicoe, Director of Electoral Services at the EC, said during the “Let the Citizen Know” novelty at the conference room of the EC headquarters in Accra.

    Biweekly Effort

At the biweekly engagements, the Chairperson of the EC, Mrs. Jean Mensa, said it would provide an opportunity for the dissemination of relevant information about how far things had gone with the ongoing registration exercise.

The engagements to be held on Wednesdays and Fridays, which is the first in the history of election management in the country, the chairperson said, would be a means of demystifying the operations of the commission.

    Necessary Adjustments

The feedback to be garnered from such engagements, she went on, would offer a chance for making necessary adjustments to the work of the commission.

“The engagements would afford the opportunity for timely information transmission and to demystify the operations of the EC and to remove the cloak of secrecy surrounding it,” she said.

    No Mysteries

She said the commission intended to open up to all Ghanaians because after all there were no mysteries about its operations, adding that this way trust could be built in the commission.

This would also remove the tension and suspicion about the work of the commission.

During such engagements, the chairperson said, it would put out details of the exercise across the country.

She said “we are keen to provide facts and let you be factual. We trust that going forward you would put Ghana and no other entity first.”

    No Sensationalism

She called on the media to not be sensational about issues, as she spelt out the importance of the media in the work of the commission, adding “we should all be on the side of truth.”

It was an engagement which had the chairperson supported by her various schedule officers who took turns to brief the media about the journey so far.

    No Mediocrity

Ms. Mensa said the commission had no room for mediocrity on the part of its officers, and those found not to be doing well were quickly removed.

Those working on the field were constantly monitored to ensure efficiency, she added.

The ongoing registration exercise, she explained, was part of the electoral process.

For an election to take place in December, such an exercise could not be overlooked, she said, adding that other processes include the exhibition of the register for registrants to inspect prior to elections.

    More Registration

Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Affairs, said every eligible Ghanaian would be registered and so people should not leave their areas for others. This phenomenon, he said, reared its head at the University of Ghana campus, led to many turning up at registration centres to be applicants from other locations.

In addressing the issue of Ghanaians outside the country, he said the EC had done all that was required of it regarding the registration and voting of citizens not residing here.

    ROPAL Factor

According to him, regarding ROPAL, he said “the court mandated the EC to do it. We have done all that is required of us regarding the C.I. It is left with Parliament to deal with it now,” he pointed out.

Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chair in charge of Operations, announced that the commission was in the second phase of the registration exercise.

In his overview of the registration exercise so far, he said EC officials engaged in the ongoing assignment had been efficient and skillful.

The foregone, coupled with the quality of the equipment being used, he said, had ensured the speedy registration of applicants.

“In some areas, as many as 280 applicants are managed,” he said with a glee of satisfaction.

According to the success being chalked up today, which is unlike what obtained in previous times, explaining that there were a few challenges at the registration centres.

He gave thumbs up to the environments of the registrations, which he went on, was peaceful and officials of the centres reporting to work on time.

    Main Challenge

The only challenge faced so far, he pointed out, was the difficulty by some applicants to observe the social distancing protocol in some centres, coupled with insufficient information about movement schedules of the registration teams.

However, he said steps had been unfurled to address the overcrowding challenges in Accra in particular.

It has turned out that the overcrowding challenges are limited to some centres at Ashaiman, in Tema and some parts of Accra.

District officers have been asked to hire chairs as another means of managing the overcrowding features at some centres.

Additional BVRs, he announced, were quickly sent to areas which showed features of overcrowding and difficulty in adhering to social distancing.

The chairperson of the EC had also said that the EC had engaged the IGP to support with security personnel to enforce the social distancing as well as the nurses who manage the temperature guns at registration centres.

The Founder and Leader of International God’s Way Church (IGWC), Bishop Angel Daniel Obinim says he’s informed of who shall emerge victorious in the December 7 general elections in the country. The renowned ‘Man of God’ claims to have had a vision of the outcome of the presidential elections long ago but had decided not to share the detail due to the nature of Ghanaians ‘hypocrisy’.

“I’ve seen who will win this year’s election long ago. I made a declaration last three years about the past elections… I said it here. I even went further to state that if one particular person does not win it means the election was rigged.

“But for me to sit here and speak about the outcome of this coming election… I will never do that. I will say no word to any Ghanaian. Only those that are close and love me and trust me shall know of the prophesy.” he stated on OBTV.

Bishop Obinim added that he would remain silent on any political matter in the country until further notice and direction from the God he serves.

Its just about six months to the general elections. Each election year, prophecies are heard from several powerful men of God and others.

  • EC could not manage overcrowding although 91% of centres were spacious CODEO

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has pointed out the inability of EC officials to adequately ensure the “two-meter distance” between applicants at various registration centres in the country.

In its first preliminary report on the on-going biometric voter registration exercise, the election observers said in spite of the fact that most centres were spacious enough, the officials failed to enforce such arrangements.

“Observers reported that in some instances (28%), registration officials could not ensure that there was a two-meter distance between registration applicants in queue. Observers reported instances of overcrowding of people outside of the inner perimeters of registration centers. This is in spite of the fact that most registration centers (91%) were found by observers to be spacious enough to allow for the necessary social distancing arrangement. However, about 9% of the registration centers observed lacked the required space to enforce the relevant social distancing protocols for registration applicants.”

According to CODEO, the lack of respect for the COVID-19 health and safety protocols, particularly the lack of social distancing at some registration centres observed, is endangering lives.

The coalition has for that matter called upon the electoral body and the general public to exercise optimum responsibility in ensuring that human lives are not threatened unnecessarily.

“The Coalition is worried that there is some level of laxity in the respect for the COVID-19 health and safety protocols, particularly the lack of social distancing at some registration centres observed. Accordingly, CODEO calls on the Electoral Commission to consider additional mechanisms for enhancing the effectiveness of the respect for health and safety protocols at all registration centres at all times.”

Meanwhile, the Domestic Election Observers deployed 100 observers for the ongoing Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) Exercise being carried out by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) across the country.

CODEO has an observer each in 100 randomly and purposively selected constituencies spread across the 16 regions of the country.

During Phase One of the registration exercise (June 30-July 5) which just ended, each observer followed one EC registration team and observed the process at one registration center throughout the six days. Observers filed daily observation reports to the CODEO Secretariat in Accra.

Saying something regarding the discussion that has welcomed President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s ongoing remark that there has not been sufficient dynamism in the sex equality plan of the nation, Mr Otchere-Darko said two gatherings; the ladies council of the NPP in Parliament, ladies coordinators of the gathering campaigned against the decision of Hajia Alima Mahama as running-mate in 2008.

He reviewed a ‘demoralizing and unnerving” second where two transports loaded up with NPP Ladies Coordinators from the nation over stopped before the applicant’s home in East Legon to campaign him against the decision of a lady as his running mate.

Peruse New voters’ register: Your ‘terrible’ clamor can’t change the choice Obiri Boahen

Mr Otchere-Darko’s Facebook post peruses: “A little awkward history to bite on. Me and my enormous mouth.

“When in mid 2008, the presidential up-and-comer of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo, indicated to the forces inside his gathering that his best option for running mate was the Pastor for Ladies, Hajia Alima Mahama, the greatest composed resistance originated from ladies, essentially, two influential ladies gatherings: (1) the ladies council in Parliament (2) ladies coordinators of the gathering. Truth be told we woke up one morning with two major transports heap of Ladies Coordinators the nation over stopped before the applicant’s home in East Legon to campaign him against the decision of the lady. To be honest, it was debilitating and startling. Incredibly.

“In 2014/15, the equivalent presidential competitor put on the gathering’s plan how to forcefully guarantee that ladies are chosen for winnable seats. However, other squeezing intra-party issues at the time wrecked that significant move. I trust the gathering will return it on the table”.

Adding to a board conversation on the theme: “Force, Progress, Change”, at the Ladies Convey 2019 in Vancouver, Canada, last Monday, Akufo-Addo stated, regardless of the lion’s share being ladies in Ghana, very little political activity had been seen in their push for more noteworthy consideration in Ghana’s political organization.

“Fifty-two percent of the populace are ladies,” he stated, including that “these measurements should check, yet that will possibly happen when ladies sit round the table where the choices are made.

“On the off chance that ladies don’t, for example, put themselves up to be chosen as competitors, at that point it is hard to have a larger part of them as clergymen in light of the fact that at any rate half of my priests, per the Constitution, must originate from the lawmaking body”.

  • Eighty percent of residents of Kalakpa Forest Reserve willing to relocate

Over 80 percent of inhabitants of the Kalakpa Forest Reserve in the Volta Region have agreed in principle to relocate outside the facility to aid its conservation, a Business Sector Advocacy Challenge Fund (BUSAC) report has indicated.

Greenglobe-Ghana, a non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) undertook the survey as part of a year-long BUSAC project dubbed “Saving Kalakpa Resource Reserve and Decent Livelihood for Kalakpa Residents.”

Mr Samuel Deh, Executive Officer of the NGO, in a release copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the Government’s reluctance to relocate the human settlements within the resource since it was created in 1975, had caused a spike in population and irreversible degradation.

It said the long-awaited relocation and resettlement would enable the practice of decent livelihoods, and save the thousands of protected flora and fauna and animal species in the reserve.

It called on the government to implement fully the resettlement action plan.

The study noted an exponential increase in the population in the reserve since its inception in 1975, and attributed the degradation to increasing farming, charcoal production, firewood harvesting and animal rearing activities by the inhabitants as an affront.

Over 80 per cent of the residents in the forest had agreed to decent relocation outside the reserve. The overall goal is to see the inhabitants of Kalakpa Resource Reserve decently relocated and practising decent and legal livelihoods in the absence of management conflict with the residents in the reserve.

The 320 square kilometre guinea savannah game park established by a Legislative Instrument, borders the Ho Municipality, the Ho West District, as well as the Adaklu and North Tongu Districts of the Volta Region, and is home to over 270 species of birds.

The resource also holds thousands of buffaloes, river-hogs, and monkeys, making it a major spot for nature-loving tourists from across the globe.

The reserve is, however, over the years been set on a path of degradation by the malicious commercial exploitation of rare wood species including; rosewood, and also the hunting of wildlife, forcing concerned citizens to rise against the Wildlife and Forestry Commission for their inaction. Kalakpa is said to be inhabited by 28 communities with a population of over 2,000.
