  • Voter registration: EC introduces chits for queue management

The Electoral Commission (EC) has introduced an innovative queue management system to reduce the overwhelming number of registrants who throng registration centres to register for voter identification cards.

In the new system, officials of the commission issue a limited number of chits to registrants who are required to turn up at registration centres each day to be registered.

The Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr Serebour Quarcoo, who made this known to the Daily Graphic yesterday, said the initiative would cut down the numbers at registration centres and help to improve on the social distancing protocols.

“The registration officials will generate numbers for the registrants each day based on their capacity. They have done registration for the past two days so they know the number of people they are capable of registering every day,” he said.

He added that in the new arrangement, persons without the chit would not be allowed into the registration centre.

    Further action

Dr Serebour added that apart from the chit system, the Commission had also strengthened the “nose mask, no registration” protocol.

He said the commission had spoken to the Ghana Police Service to tighten the knot on enforcement of the social distancing protocols.

    Statement

The EC had earlier issued a statement indicating that it was working with the security agencies to enforce social distancing and other safety protocols.

The statement, which was signed by the Director of Public Affairs at the commission, Mrs Sylvia Annoh, said everything was being done to guarantee the safety of registrants.

“We continue to engage with the police and other security agencies to find workable solutions to maintain law and order and the social distancing protocols at the various centres nationwide. We trust that the security agencies will continue to assist to ensure adherence to the laid down safety protocols,” it said.

    Enthusiasm

It said the commission was pleased with the enthusiasm that characterised the registration exercise on the first two days of the exercise.

The statement said the massive turnout for the registration was indicative of the growing interest citizens had in the electoral process.

“The commission is of the view that the large number of citizens at the registration centre is an indication of a vibrant democracy,” it added.

    Enforcement

It, however, said the disregard for social distancing and safety protocols by registrants was worrying and needed concerted efforts from all stakeholders to deal with.

“We wish to state that the commission has procured and distributed adequate supplies to its registration centres to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus,” it said.

It said the commission had supplied paint to all its registration centres and instructed its officials to mark the floor by providing a one-metre distance between each applicant.

“We count on the general public to assist the commission to work to maintain law and order at all the registration centres,” the statement added. – #GhanaVotes2020#

  • No Graphic staff has COVID-19

The Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) has discounted a false publication by a social media news platform which reported that 36 staff of the company have tested positive for COVID-19.

The GCGL in a press release signed by its Corporate Communications Manager, Mr Emmanuel Agyei Arthur said there is no truth in the story which has gone viral on social media.

    Precautionary measure

The false publication from WhatsApp News twisted the GCGL management’s proactive reaction to information that one of the company’s stakeholders who had visited its premises recently had tested positive for Covid-19.

In all, 36 people, who had interacted with the stakeholder, were tested yesterday, July 2, 2020, and are in self-isolation as required by the Covid-19 protocol while awaiting the results.

“To be proactive in protecting staff, management decided to make an arrangement for all who were exposed to the person in line of duty to test for Covid-19 in order to know their status”, the release said.

“The company’s Resident Medical Officer, therefore, requested the Korley Clottey Municipal Health Directorate to test staff who interacted with the stakeholder in line of their duty”.

The Resident Medical Officer,” Dr Jacqui Barnes, said: “This was a precautionary measure to ensure the health and safety of our employees so that if any of them has been infected by the stakeholder, we can isolate the person early enough for treatment, even before symptoms show,”.

    Test results still not in

“The false publication came late evening of the same day the tests were taken. As I speak, the results of the tests are still not in so what test report is the publication referring to?,” Dr Barnes stressed.

    Strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols

The release also detailed the company’s rigorous adherence to the government’s directive on social distancing at workplaces.

The company has decongested its offices by maintaining half of the workforce and run virtual meetings. Additionally, staff fill health declaration forms when they return from their turn of “social distancing leave.”

“Thus, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has kept to this policy by providing the necessary facilities at its premises to ensure the safety of employees and external stakeholders,” the release said.

“These measures include the wearing of mask before entry and throughout presence in the company, hand sanitizer dispensers and siting of veronica buckets at all controlled points of the company’s offices around the country, temperature checking, as well as distribution of face masks and hand sanitizers to staff”.

  • EC & Supreme Court placed Ghanaians in severe danger Ex-Council of State Member

A Statesman, Nana Kodua Kesse II, has described as reckless the compilation of the new Voters register by the Electoral Commission (EC) amid raging Coronavirus pandemic.

According to him, Ghanaians are defying the odds of COVID-19 to express their disdain to abuse of power.

His comments, come as the COVID-19 cases continue to shoot up with many state officials, including cabinet ministers, like Dan Botwe, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh and Kweku Agyemang in hospital undergoing treatment for the virus.

The traditional ruler’s concerns, come as the country mourns the loss of ex-General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie alias “Sir John”.

Also admitted at the hospital for COVID-19, is a Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, who is also Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema West Constituency and Peter Mac Manu, the board chairman of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authourity (GHAPOHA) and the campaign manager for Akufo-Addo’s re-election bid.

The former Council of State Member, was also unhappy with the Supreme Court, saying it ignored all these dangers and even upheld the exclusion of old Voters ID card as a requirement of proof of citizens identity.

Nana Kodua Kesse II, who is the Oyokohene and Adontenhene of New Juaben Traditional Area, blamed the Supreme Court led by the Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah for putting Ghanaians in a situation where they had to defend their citizenship by defying the odds, but with caution to register in their numbers to express their disdain to abuse of power.

He believes, the EC should have placed the health of Ghanaians above parochial political interest by listening to advise of various groups, including Chiefs to abandon the belated compilation exercise.

He could not believe that the peoples’ health, were being sacrificed for power, describing it as reckless.

Nana Kodua Kesse II, said though the Electoral Commission has put in place basic preventive measures at registration centers, it is being flouted in many areas, adding that the registration exercise which has triggered a lot of movements and contacts in the country, could increase the spread of the Coronavirus disease.

“The good people of Ghana spoke calling on the EC to suspend the compilation of the New Voters’ Register since its implementation would increase the spread of Coronavirus but the EC didn’t listen. I think it is a rash decision where we are sacrificing lives of Ghanaians for Political power. We are endangering the health of Millions of Ghanaians. The nose mask we know protects little”.

COVID-19 deaths in Ghana now stand at 117 with 4,941 active cases and 14,330 recoveries, the Ghana Health Service has announced on Wednesday night. The development means five more persons have died from the last count. Total confirmed cases are 19,388.

The Statesman, believes the Supreme Court having ignored all these dangers and even upheld the exclusion of old Voters ID card as a requirement of proof of citizens identity, the only opportunity for Ghanaians to defend their citizenship is to defy the odds, but with caution to register in their numbers to express their disdain to abuse of power.

  • Quarantined evacuees from Ivory Coast allege extortion, demand answers from government

Thirteen Ghanaians evacuated from Ivory Coast by the Government of Ghana and currently under compulsory quarantine at Takoradi Beach Hotel in the Western Region have alleged foul play by their handlers.

They have specifically alleged extortion, concealment of information, underhand dealings and intimidation by security officers manning the hotel.

Narrating their situation to 3news.com, one of them (name withheld) said they arrived in Ghana on Friday, June 25 and their samples were taken by a medical team to be tested for Covid-19 but they have since not had any updates from them eight days on.

The evacuee complained that the hotel where they are quarantined is a dilapidated facility which was once closed down for some reasons.

This, they say, is not fitting given the GHC300 per night they agreed with the Ghana Embassy in Ivory Coast before setting off.

According to them, the Embassy did an amazing job by making an arrangement for them to be quarantined at Boyiosson Hotel or African Beach Hotel in Takoradi hotels they say are more decent.

But upon arrival in Takoradi where they were handed to security men, they were taken to the “dilapidated” Takoradi Beach Hotel instead of the promised Africa Beach Hotel, where they later found out was an isolation centre housing Covid-19 infected people as well, without any explanation to them.

The evacuees claim a National Security Operative came a few days later with invoices in the name of an individual and demanded that they are required to pay $150 per night for their stay in the hotel; a move they protested.

While protesting the bill, they were threatened to be sent back to Ivory Coast if they failed to pay, but they stood their ground, 3news.com gathers.

They further claimed they were brought new invoices, still in the name of an individual but this time the prices had changed back to GHC300 per night for 14 days each required to pay GHC4,200 without any explanation.

According to them, the security at the place called them individually and accused them of leaking information to the press.

In one instance, one of them was allegedly pushed in the chest by a police officer they say they want the police officer removed from post because he constantly intimidates them.

The evacuees are therefore calling on the government to intervene in the matter to clarify why they have been quarantined at an isolation centre, which was not part of the agreement they had with the embassy.

They also want to know why the price of the hotel keeps changing and who are the faces behind what they call suspicious deals, especially fishing out the National Security operative who came to demand the $150 per night payment.

Again, they want the medical team to update them on their statuses so that the managers of hotel, whose actions they deem suspicious, will not use that as an excuse to continue to extort money from them.

They are also appealing to the government to help expedite the process because there are students amongst them who are preparing to write an exam, a young lady who needs special diet and an old lady who needs special attention.

Meanwhile, Western Regional Health Director Dr. Jacob Mahama is reported in the media to have confirmed the existence of the 13 evacuees being quarantined at the hotel but denied knowledge of the fees being charged and the alleged excesses.

  • Police storm wedding centre as huge marriage was being held amid COVID-19 pandemic (Video)

A wedding ceremony was turned into a ground for commotion after policemen stormed the event that was being held with no regards for COVID-19 preventive protocols.

In the video sighted on Twitter, hundreds of people were captured fleeing the grounds after the police arrived at the marriage ceremony.

Although not explicitly stated, a look at the video shows that it was an Islamic wedding as many people were seen dressed like Muslims.

Following the protocols to prevent COVID-19 is supposed to be a personal commitment that does not need to be forced on anyone before it gets implemented.

However, it appears that most people have not come to the true understanding of the need to protect themselves from the disease that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives around the globe.

It is only hoped that the non-adherence to the COVID-19 preventive measures does not result in an uncontrollable spike in cases and deaths.

Meanwhile, a Nigerian comedian called The Real Femi has released a hilarious video of himself imitating how pidgin English is spoken in Sierra Leone, Ghana, and Nigeria.

The video portrayed both the Naija pidgin and Salone pidgin quite well with no clear strings attached, but how Femi spoke Ghana pidgin makes it clear he was making fun of it.

In all three sentences Femi translated into the various pidgin languages, he repeatedly used words such as ‘kraa’ and ‘inside no be outside’ in a ridiculous manner which did not sit well with many Ghanaians.

  • Stakeholders deliberate on community girl child protection by-laws

Stakeholders including the “Champions of Change” in the Wa Municipality have deliberated on the need to harmonize and gazette community child protection by-laws to ensure girls are well protected against any form of abuse.

The move is part of the implementation of the Girls Advocacy Alliance (GAA) project by the Centre for the Promotion of Democratic Governance (CENPRODEG) and the Defense for Children International Ghana with sponsorship from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The project is focused on four thematic areas namely, child marriage; child abuse and gender-based violence; commercial sexual exploitation; and Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and employment.

Speaking during the stakeholder deliberation forum dubbed: “Regional Advocacy on Promoting Equal Rights and Opportunities for Girls and Young Women”, Madam Edith Naaza, Project Coordinator of CENPRODEG, an NGO, said the absence of a well-recognized community child protection by-laws was affecting the fight to protect the girl-child.

She said the harmonization and gazetting of the by-laws would give power and authority to community leaders to be able to sanction perpetrators of child abuse as prescribed by the by-laws.

“When community members become aware that in their own community they have by-laws prohibiting them from engaging in child marriage, impregnating teenagers, or commercially exploiting young girls, they will restrain themselves from those abusive acts”, Madam Naaza said.

Madam Matilda Doopireh Chireh, the Acting Upper West Regional Director of the Department of Children, said both boys and girls at their adolescent age have high sexual desires that often pushed them into taken wrong decisions, hence the need for parents to understand and give them adequate protection.

She urged parents to also endeavour to provide the basic needs of the girl-child to ensure that men do not take advantage of that to abuse them.

Madam Chireh called on communities to come up with their by-laws and own them so that they could use them to protect their children.

Mr Umar Musah, Wa Municipal Director of Social Welfare and Community Development, urged parents to take very good care of their children by ensuring that before they themselves go to bed their children especially the girl-child was already on bed.

  • Friday debate: Was the GFA right to cancel the football season?

The fate of the 2019/2020 Ghana football season was decided on Tuesday, June 30 by the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association as the season was declared null and void.

With no promotion and relegation, Asante Kotoko and Ashantigold were chosen as Ghana’s representatives for next year’s CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup.

Kotoko and Ashgold who represented the country in the 2019/20 Africa inter-club competitions were chosen following their triumphs in the Normalization Committee Special Competitions Tier 1 and Tier 2 in 2019 as the current season couldn’t produce a champion.

This decision taken by the GFA has generated some sort of debate all over social media and the traditional media space as some football fans believe the association should have waited for the President to lift the ban on football before taking a decision of this magnitude.

On the African reps, there has been strong opposition to the candidates taken as many including King Faisal owner Alhaji Grunsah who believes that they are just going to add up to the numbers.

On this episode of GhanaWeb’s Friday debate, we ask you if you think the GF erred by calling off the season or you support the decision taken by the country’s football governing body.

Watch the video below and join the debate by leaving your comments in the comment section.

The party says it has invoked curses from the gods in the area to deal ruthlessly with anyone who will register there but is not a resident.

Chairman of the party in the area, Mr. Ken Dadzie told Nyankonton Mu Nsem that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is busing non-residents to the area to register them.

“We are advising those who are not residents here not to register. We have informed the police but nothing has been done. If they do not stop, then the only we can say is that may the gods strike them dead. • Improve on loan recovery Finance Committee to MASLOC

The Finance Committee of Parliament has tasked the management of the Micro Finance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) to improve on its loan recovery as the scheme recovered only 55% of loans disbursed in 2019.

This follows a drop of the recovery rate from 64% in 2016 to 55% in 2019.

Presenting a report of the Finance Committee on the budget performance of the office of government machinery for 2019 on the floor of the House, the Chair of the Committee, Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah disclosed that many targets set by the management of MASLOC in the year under review were not met.

He said: “The committee was informed that during the period under review, the office of the government machinery faced challenges, including inadequate budgetary allocation, arbitrary use of the budgetary allocation and inadequate capacity of key implementers”.

“This has adversely impacted the ability of the office of the government machinery to effectively execute its programme of activities as approved by parliament”.

“After carefully considering the budget performance report of the office of the government machinery, the committee makes the following recommendations: the committee noted that a number of budgets sent by the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) were not met. Further, the rate of new recovery has declined from 64% in 2016 to 55% in 2019. In view of the important role of MASLOC, the committee recommends to the management to put in place the legal mechanisms to improve on this recovery rate.”

  • It’s not EC’s job to share nose masks at registration centres – Atik Mohammed

Atik Mohammed has called on political figures and Ghanaians to stop worrying the Electoral Commission (EC) to give them nose masks at the registration centres.

The EC’s registration exercise began on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, and is aimed at compiling a new voters’ register for the upcoming general elections and all other national elections.

The ongoing exercise is taking place in over 33,000 polling stations across the country.

Some participants have expressed their displeasure with the EC’s inability to provide them with nose masks despite assuring Ghanaians that they will take all COVID-19 health protocols into account.

Addressing the issue on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Atik Mohammed stated emphatically that sharing nose or face masks to attendees to the registration centres shouldn’t be the responsibility of the Electoral Commission.

“It’s not their job,” he stated and wondered how people even go to the registration centres unmasked when President Nana Akufo-Addo has ordered a mandatory wearing of masks by every citizen.

” . . the E.I states that you can’t leave your home without wearing the face or nose mask. So, by law, it is even criminal or it’s an offence to step out of your home without wearing the mask. So, how do you get to the registration centre in the first place?”

  • ECOWAS Commission to develop Integrated Human Capital Strategy

The ECOWAS Commission, in its quest to improve human capital outcomes across the region, is developing an Integrated Human Capital Strategy.

As part of the development process, partnering consultants are visiting the Member States, including Ghana, to conduct a situational assessment of the challenges on ground limiting the impact of HCD interventions, and to gather stakeholder insights on how ECOWAS can provide regional support moving forward.

The objective of the Integrated Human Capital Strategy is not to create new country strategies for each Member State, but to define how ECOWAS supports countries in realizing their HCD objectives through interventions at the regional level. The development of the strategy is focused on three thematic areas, including:

    • Health and Nutrition;
    • Education, Skills and Labour Participation; and
    • Entrepreneurship, Financial Inclusion and Digital Payments

The team of consultants supporting ECOWAS arrived in Ghana on 27th January 2020 to engage key stakeholders, including Ministers and their Directors from selected Ministries and Departments.

Other stakeholders engaged over the two-week period of the in-country visit included Donors, Civic Society Organizations and Private Sector Players.

To conclude the country visit to Ghana, a workshop was held to:

    • Share insights from the regional and Ghana baseline analysis which sheds light on our starting point;

    • Share the findings from the stakeholder interviews during the country visit around challenges hindering progress and key success factors for tackling those challenges.

    • Work with all previously engaged parties to prioritize the focus areas for ECOWAS interventions moving forward.

Following the workshop, preliminary findings were made available to stakeholders to ensure accuracy of the information collected during the visit of the consultants. Comments from on the preliminary findings from stakeholders have since been made available to the ECOWAS Commission.

Preparations are ongoing to facilitate a validation workshop for the strategy.
Similar country visits and workshops will be held in the other Member States, before the Integrated Human Capital Strategy is developed.

  • GHAMRO introduces welfare scheme for right owners

The management team of the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO), a collective society for music-right owners, has introduced a welfare scheme for the aged music-right owners, whom have been members of the society for over 30 years.

The scheme, Aged Right Owners Monthly Stipend (AGRIMS), will make monthly payments to aged members who are 60 years and above outside the normal royalty payment.

This was made known by the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of the organization, Abraham Adjatey, in an interview with BEATWAVES.

He revealed that the scheme was geared at curbing situations of financial struggles among aged music right owners.

The idea of paying the aged right owners monthly was created and proposed by the welfare committee of the society, with over 180 aged right owners benefiting, he said.

The operations officer hinted that the society was yet to establish a database of right owners who had become incapacitated during their musical lives; and to register all targeted beneficiaries with the scheme.

He mentioned that since his administration took over the management of the society, its administrative system had been restructured and professionals had been recruited to run affairs.

He indicated that copyright and royalties were all about ensuring that the property of right owners are protected and money that accrues from using such property was paid to the rightful owners.

The outspoken COO hinted that this year, the society had adopted an aggressive strategy to force music users to pay royalties due right owners.

“It has also put measures in place to monitor the activities of music users,” he said.

On the accusations of the lack of transparency, Mr. Adjatey responded, “The board is very transparent and for the years that we have operated, we have stayed on course.”

The organization, he said, had plans of embarking on outreach programmes by the close of the year to educate music users on the operation of the society.

According to him, the workshop on music piracy is essential because of the music piracy menace that has engulfed the country through illegal music downloads on storage devices without the authorization of the music-right owners.

He assured right owners that steps were being taken to impose levy on other devices such as mobile phones, pen drives, hard discs and computers to raise more funds for them.

Highly Spiritual signee, Henry Nuamah, popularly known in the entertainment industry as Krymi has shared his opinion on why most of the musicians in the country are famous but are not making money.

Krymi told Amansan Krakye on GBC Radio Central that most of the musicians in Ghana are making their names worldwide but they are earning only little revenues from their music.

He said that apart from the media supporting the artiste to go far, Ghanaians should also learn to patronize their songs through the right channels instead of downloading them for free on the internet.

He has therefore urged Ghanaians to stream their songs the right way so that they may also benefit from their hard work.

  • Prosecute Carlos Ahenkorah Asiedu Nketia

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has called for the prosecution of the immediate past Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah for breaching the COVID-19 safety protocols.

Mr Ahenkorah on Friday, 3 July 2020 resigned from his post after violating the COVID-19 protocols and exposing a section of his constituents to the virus.

This follows his admission of breach of the COVID-19 protocols, when, as a person certified to be positive for the virus, he visited a registration centre in his constituency before the period of self-isolation was complete.

In accepting his resignation, President Nana Akufo-Addo recognised that Mr Ahenkorah had acted honourably in the circumstances by resigning from his office and wished him well.

Reacting to the development, Mr Nketia said the resignation of the Tema West MP from his ministerial position is not enough.

The NDC General Secretary said: “There have been positive cases identified at the presidency and nothing is happening. There have been positive cases identified in the house of parliament but parliament is still sitting.

“Even when one case was in a factory they closed down; you go to hospitals when one case was found they closed the ward down. Now the house of parliament where all laws are made they identified more than 13 cases in parliament but parliament is still sitting because they have to pass laws to make Nana Akufo-Addo continue as a President.

“Your minsters are being tested positive, some of them are going round registration centres spreading COVID-19, they are not being prosecuted.

“So, we are calling for the prosecution of Carlos Ahenkorah, resignation is not part of our laws or the COVID protocol if they have taken that administrative step, we agree but we are waiting to see that they are prosecuted the same way that the ordinary man on the street has been prosecuted.”

  • AFCON is a festival, we dont want to play in empty stadiums CAF Boss

CAF President Ahmad Ahmad says the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was moved from 2021 to 2022 to “preserve the tournament.”

He said the postponement of the tournament was necessary to ensure that the competition is not played in empty stadiums.

Cameroon was scheduled to host the AFCON next year, but CAF announced on Tuesday that the tournament has been moved on by a further 12 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Ahmad said the AFCON is an African festival and, therefore, cannot be held in empty stadiums.

“The Africa Cup of Nations for Nations is not just a ball party Al-Qadam, it is also a great African festival, so we did not want to risk organizing it in empty stadiums, especially with the increase in cases of infection with Coruna virus day after day unlike the rest of the continents of the world,” the CAF President told Radio Foot Africa.

“Postponing the nations of Africa 2021 to January 2022, due to the Coronavirus, which prevented us from organizing and explained: The qualifiers for this competition, there are four playoffs remaining.”

“After discussing this with all stakeholders in African football, as well as the Cameroonian authorities, we met to take this decision and thus preserve the African Cup of Nations.”

  • Kojo Addae Mensah runs aways from Kotoko CEO job

The CEO of Data Bank Kojo Addai Mensah has counted himself out of “ever” showing interest in the CEO position of Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

Kotoko are in search for a new Chief Executive Officer, following the exit of Mr George Amoako.

Mr Addai Mensah ‘s exploits in the banking sector have been hailed by many, urging him to stand up for the vacant Kotoko job.

But the former board member of the Kotoko Express newspaper believes there are better people to run the affairs of the club than he can do, urging Manhyia to bring in people who “understand the rules of the game”.

“I am not interested in the vacant Kotoko C.E.O job and I don’t think I will ever be interested in that position because I think there are a lot of people with vast experience in that field more than I do,” Mr Addai said.

“The fact that I am successful at the banking field does not mean I will succeed as a club C.E.O and I think Kotoko should go in for people with in-depth knowledge in the running of football to occupy that position but I must say I’m grateful to be linked to such a huge platform.”

Sharing his view on Kumasi based AshFM, Mr Addai bemoaned the continuous appointment and dissolving of boards, which he says has changed nothing at the Kumasi giants.

“On the issue of the board,I will say we have had board upon board and yet nothing has changed,” he said.

“The challenge is we don’t look for people who understands the rules of the game very well.

“Checking from the newly constituted board, only Mrs. Evelyn Nsiah Asare who happens to be in the game the rest are all from other field.”

Kotoko are the most successful club in the Ghana as far as the league is concern but has failed to glitter at the continental stage since 1983 when they won their last CAF trophy.

The inconsistencies at the managerial level has been cited as one of the names of the club who are preparing to return to the Africa next season.

To Mr Addai, a shift in the managerial appointment of the club will help the club in their club move to the higher heights.

“If Kotoko wants to be successful,I think His Majesty Otumfour Osei Tutu II should look for company like Fenway Sports Group (FSG)of Liverpool and Fayenood partnership with WAFA whose main activities are sports so that they can run the club than forming individual board always,” he added.

  • GFA didn’t do enough for Premier League return – Coach J.E Sarpong

“The inaction of the Ghana Football Association caused the cancellation of the league,” Sarpong, who has had stints with Asante Kotoko, Aduana Stars, Liberty Professionals, Ebusua Dwarfs and Great Olympics, told Akoma FM.

“They [Ghana FA] didn’t put in enough effort to get the league restarted. They didn’t do enough to ensure that the league bounced back.

“Clubs must make a case for compensation for all the wasted efforts and resources caused by the cancellation of the league.”

The cancellation came two weeks after the GFA revealed it was engaging the Government of Ghana over the possible resumption of football under strict and safe protocols such as playing matches behind closed doors.

“I think it is welcome and long overdue. We expected it because when the game went for a break we all saw that the virus was not making it possible for us to resume,” Inter Allies assistant coach Tony Lokko told Bryt FM.

“Looking at the situation at hand, even if we are to resume the preparation towards the game, it will take a longer time, so I think it is a good idea from the Ghana FA to cancel the league for now and prepare for a better calendar.

“In fact, we are all happy it has come that way though the FA may be losing certain things but technically it is welcoming news for the coaches I believe.”

Following the recent return of some national leagues in England, Spain, Germany and Italy, there have been calls for Ghana to follow suit.

Medeama, who sit sixth on the men’s league table, nonetheless, wanted football back as soon as possible.

Personalities from Berekum Chelsea, Eleven Wonders and King Faisal, however, called for the total cancellation of the 2019-20 season.

Ghana’s ban on all contact sports, including football, remains in effect until at least July 31.

  • Stop the insults! . . . Sir John and Gen Mosquito’s friendship should be a lesson – Sefa Kayi tells upstarts in politics

Celebrated broadcaster and host of Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwami Sefa Kayi, affectionately called Chairman General has advised the youth in politics to draw lessons from the character and personality of the late NPP bigwig, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie.

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, passed away on Wednesday at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

According to sources, the CEO of the Forestry Commission tested positive for Covid-19 and succumbed to complications of the disease while undergoing treatment at the ICU of the hospital.

Two politicians, different parties but best friends

NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia and Sir John are bosom friends despite their political affiliations.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia, also called General Mosquito, overwhelmed with grief, shared a touching revealing story about his late friend.

“  . . I was deeply touched when he (Sir John) came to stay with me for 3 days after the death of my mother . . . he could have stayed in a hotel when everyone else had left but he came to live in my house. We ate the same food and did a lot of things together. The Pentecostal pastor who presided over the funeral, as well as sympathisers who were present were amazed by his gesture that General Secretaries of the two rival parties would get along so well,” he wrote.

Kwami Sefa Kayi scolds arrogant youth

Chairman General reprimanded the young people, who in the name of politics, disrespect and insult elderly people.

According to him, the relationship between Sir John and General Mosquito is what politics is supposed to mean, that you have political differences but act in decorum.

He advised the youth to stop the politics of insult and wipe off their arrogant disposition saying “Ghanaians will attest that one person who has lost his brother is General Mosquito. I am sure that we remember their political fight. They will fight but immediately come back together after their arguments. These are two leaders with one in NDC and the other in NPP. There is no way General Mosquito would vote for Nana Addo and there’s no way Sir John would ever vote for Mahama but still, it is not even the close friends that I am looking; I’m looking at the maturity to agree that I like this and you like that but we don’t hate each other,” he said.

“This should serve as a lesson to the youth who disrespect and insult adults because they’re following politicians. It should be a lesson to show them that life is short . . . With some of them, it is some adults who are behind and stimulating them. That is what creates the tension. At the end of the day, it is all about political power. That’s all it is,” he accentuated.

  • MASLOCs loan recovery rate drops from 64% to 55% Finance Committee reveals

The Finance Committee of Parliament has tasked the management of the Micro Finance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) to improve on its loan recovery as the scheme recovered only 55% of loans disbursed in 2019.

This follows a drop in the recovery rate from 64% in 2016 to 55% in 2019.

Presenting a report of the Finance Committee on the budget performance of the office of government machinery for 2019 on the floor of the House, Chair of the Committee Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah disclosed many targets set by the management of MASLOC in the year under review were not met

He said: “The committee was informed that during the period under review the office of the government machinery faced challenges including inadequate budgetary allocation, arbitrary use of the budgetary allocation and inadequate capacity of key implementers.

“This has adversely impacted on the ability of the office of the government machinery to effectively execute its programme of activities as approved by parliament.

“After carefully considering the budget performance report of the office of the government machinery the committee makes the following recommendations: the committee noted that a number of budgets sent by the Microfinance and small loans centre (MASLOC) were not met.

“Further the rate of new recovery has declined from 64 per cent in 2016 to 55% in 2019.

In view of the important role of MASLCO, the committee recommends to management to put in place the legal mechanisms to improve on this recovery rate.”

  • Coronavirus: Test kits must be ‘validated’, ‘approved’ before use, importation FDA

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has said the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kits for testing the Coronavirus must be “validated within the appropriate settings and target population, that is, Ghana, before they can be approved for use.”

A statement issued and signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, Mrs Delese Mimi Darko on 1 July 2020 stated that the unregistered test kits could produce “false positive or false-negative results,” which will consequently result in “unnecessary quarantine and contact tracing or spread of infection by persons with the disease.”

Additionally, “commercially marketed test kits must pass through an evaluation/validation process and would be granted Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA).”

The FDA, therefore, cautioned the public to refrain from the use and importation of unregistered RDT kits.

“The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) wishes to caution the public who are using and any persons importing these test kits, that RDT Kits must be validated within the appropriate settings and target population, that is, Ghana, before they can be approved for use. This validation process is guided by independently evaluating the diagnostics for assurance of quality and performance through collaboration with Research laboratories and Public Health laboratories and the expert Technical Advisory Committee for Medical Devices,” the statement said.
