  • Napoli ready to swap forward Arkadiusz Milik for Ghana ace Thomas Partey

Italian side Napoli are interested in a swap deal involving Polish forward Arkadiusz Milik and Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey in the summer transfer window.

The Naples based club are the latest to show interest in the Ghanaian after the Rojiblancos approached the Serie A side for the services of Milik.

Milik has a year left on his contract with Napoli but has refused to sign a new deal with the club following interest from the La Liga outfit.

Atletico are believed to want an exchange which will involve Spanish striker Diego Costa, however, the Italians prefer the Ghana international who has a release clause of 50 million Euros.

Meanwhile, the 27-year old remains English Premier League side Arsenal’s number one target.

Thomas Partey is enjoying his best campaign in Europe this season, after commanding a role in Diego Simeone’s team with some impressive displays.

The Black Stars midfielder has made 30 La Liga appearances this season, and has been the key cog for the Red and whites since the return of the league following the coronavirus break.

Partey has also been linked with moves to Juventus and French champions Paris Saint Germain.

Initially, Rennes pulled out of the race but have been forced to return to the negotiation table after failing to land Genk defender Jhon Lucumi.

And Rennes president Nicolas Holveck claims the Ghanaian is torn between France and England.

“It shows that the project is interesting for the players. Even if the Premier League is attractive, it makes you think,” Holveck commented while stating Salisu is hesitant.

Southampton have identified the 21-year-old as a long-term replacement for Jack Stephens.

Salisu, who has a £10 million release clause, is also being targeted by Everton.

  • Why do children accompany footballers to the pitch?

Footballers were not always accompanied by children, until the 1999 FA cup final, between Manchester United, and Newcastle FC, and even in that game only 2 children, one for each team. It was until a year later that a full squadron of children escorted players.

So now why do children accompany players to the pitch?

This is to remind them that, the children are looking up to them, and monitoring their every move, so they should not disappoint. It also means promotion of children’s right campaigns. Or it can also mean that they are bringing the element of innocence to the game, fulfilling children games, and making profit of it. Sometimes it is also for charity purposes.

The children also want to meet their favourite footballers that bad that escorting them to the pitch would really make them happy. The children are normally between 6 – 18 years, no child with a disability is left out at all. They have another duties like, assisting referees and lines men, acting about sideline ball crew, and many other, important and fascinating duties.

Now that the coronavirus pandemic is here, no mascots and children not are allowed to hold hands of the players, because the virus can spread through handshakes, and even there are no handshakes between players, and referees and players of the other team. We all hope and pray that this virus will disappear, and we can return to our normal lives.

  • ‘We were cheated’ – John Painstil ten years after Ghana lost to Uruguay at the World Cup

Ex-Ghana international John Painstil feels the Black Stars were ‘cheated’ at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa 2010 after Luis Suarez’s goal-bound handball denied the Africans a place in the semifinals.

The Black Stars were in jubilant mood after Dominic Adiyiah’s last minute header looked liked heading straight into the net only to be met by the hand of Suarez.

Ghana were awarded a penalty which was missed by Asamoah Gyan, but John Painstil believes the ball crossed the line before the Barcelona forward bundled it out.

“We were cheated,” Paintsil told the BBC. “To clear the ball from the line with your hand – it’s supposed to be a goal,” he added.

He continued: “For me, I thought, ‘last man on the line, touch it with his hand, it’s supposed to be a goal’ – so I was already celebrating that we are through.”

“Then I saw it was a penalty and I said, ‘What?’ I was shouting, ‘No, no, take the ball to the centre (circle), take the ball to the centre.’”

  • Ghana players ‘cannot forgive’ Suarez handball 10 years on

“For me, the Uruguay game is a game I think we won,” John Paintsil says, looking back on one of the most dramatic matches in men’s World Cup history: the 2010 quarter-final between his Ghana side and Uruguay in Johannesburg.

The reality, though, is Ghana didn’t win. A handball by Luis Suarez stopped a certain goalbound shot deep into injury time, in one of the most controversial and memorable moments of that tournament. Suarez was sent off – but Ghana missed the resulting spot-kick and, ultimately, went out on penalties after extra time.

The pain for Paintsil and his team-mate Hans Sarpei still lingers, 10 years on. For many Ghanaians, Suarez is the perpetrator of one of the greatest crimes in the country’s sporting history.

    “We were cheated,” Paintsil says.

“To clear the ball from the line with your hand – it’s supposed to be a goal.”

Paintsil says people still talk about the incident in Ghana.

“I can’t forgive him because it was not an accident.” Sarpei adds.

“He knows what he has done. We were crying and you see someone who has cheated us is celebrating. How can I forgive him? Never. Never ever.”

    First African World Cup

On the 2 July 2010, Ghana had the footballing hopes of a whole continent on their shoulders.

South Africa was the host of Africa’s first World Cup but Bafana Bafana were unable to make it past the group stage despite a valiant effort.

The other African teams had all been eliminated at the same point, leaving just the Black Stars in the competition.

“On the way to the game against Uruguay, I think everybody knew we could beat them – I think the whole world was supporting us,” left-back Sarpei says.

“The way we play the game: we’re playing on the front, we’re attacking in front. We try to enjoy the game. When you see Ghana, it’s like you’re listening to music because the ball is flowing.”

Ghana took the lead on the stroke of half-time via a 40-yard thunderbolt from former Portsmouth and Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari.

But Diego Forlan equalised with an exquisite free-kick and the two teams proceeded to play out in an engrossing contest – undoubtedly one of the best games of the competition – with both teams spurning chances throughout the game.

But it’s the final few minutes of the match that will forever live in World Cup infamy.

Ghana won a free-kick on the edge of the box, which was whipped in by Paintsil. In an ensuing goalmouth scramble, Suarez legitimately cleared a shot off the line from captain Steven Appiah – before, seconds later, palming Dominic Adiyiah’s header away from goal.

“For me, I thought, ‘last man on the line, touch it with his hand, it’s supposed to be a goal’ – so I was already celebrating that we are through.” Pantsil recalls.

“Then I saw it was a penalty and I said, ‘What?’ I was shouting, ‘No, no, take the ball to the centre (circle), take the ball to the centre.’”

Suarez was sent off, leaving the field in tears, whilst the Ghanaian players began to celebrate.

“I think everybody from our side was thinking ‘yeah, we’re going to the semi-final’ because Asamoah Gyan had scored two penalty goals before and he made it look easy,” Sarpei says.

Gyan had been talismanic for Ghana in the tournament, leading the line and scoring the winner in the previous round against the United States – a game which had also gone to extra time.

“I was standing there and for me the ball was going into the net and we are going through to the next round.” Sarpei recalls.

“Then it hit the crossbar and my first thought was like, ‘is this real?’ Really? The ball is not into the net? What is happening? What is the problem?’

“And then it was difficult. At this moment, when he didn’t score and we had to go to the penalty shootout, the feeling was like, now it will be difficult to go to the next round.”

Suarez, who had stopped in the tunnel to watch the penalty, was pictured celebrating when Gyan missed – something that still rankles with Paintsil.

“After the penalty was missed you came out and then celebrated like you’re on top of the world by hurting people. At least be a professional, feel the pain. Just go to your dressing room and celebrate and then nobody will see it.”

Suarez was quoted in the press saying “the hand of God now belongs to me”, referencing Diego Maradona’s goal against England at the 1986 World Cup.

Ghana would go on to lose via a penalty shootout and with it went Africa’s golden opportunity to win a World Cup.

In the two tournaments since, no African team has come close to reaching the semi-final stage.

The match against Ghana is where Luis Suarez first gained international notoriety. Six months later, he would join Liverpool from Dutch giants Ajax.

Suarez took a gamble that helped his country get into its first semi-final since 1970, but they were beaten 3-2 by the Netherlands without him.

“One has to do what one has to do to make his country proud and that’s what he did to us,” says Paintsil – but asked if put in the same position as Suarez, whether he would handle the ball, he was adamant.

“There’s no African player that would have done that,” he argues.

“Africans are more athletic. Even when the ball is on the other line, I would have tried to kick the ball, kung-fu style.”

They say time heals old wounds. But 10 years on, the wound still appears to be open for Hans and John.

“It still pains. I’m still feeling it anytime I think about it,” says Pantsil.

“A lot of things would have changed in Ghanaian football, in our country and also in Africa. Maybe adding numbers to the next World Cup, the more an African team goes forward, the more we can add more countries to our package. For me I don’t know when I’m going to forget about this memory but now it’s part of me.”

  • Hans Sarpei cannot forgive Suarez ten years after World Cup quarter final defeat

Former Ghana international Hans Adu Sarpei says he cannot forgive Luis Suarez after his goal-bound handball prevented the Black Stars from becoming the first African team to reach the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup.

Luis Suarez was a hero to Uruguayans for stopping Dominic Adiyiah’s stoppage time header, but the Barcelona striker remains a villain to Ghanaians ten years after the incident.

Sarpei, a member of the 2010 World Cup team disclosed the Black Stars were sure of victory with the World behind them, but the drama in the dying minutes at a packed soccer city stadium will leave in his memory forever.

“I can’t forgive him because it was not an accident.” Sarpei told BBC Sports.

“He knows what he has done. We were crying and you see someone who has cheated us is celebrating. How can I forgive him? Never. Never ever.”

Ghana were awarded a penalty after the handball with Suarez shown the red card, however Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty with the Black Stars losing the game on penalties.

Today marks exactly ten years when the game was played, and Sarpei remembers every bit of the tournament, describing the teams play as listening to good music.

“On the way to the game against Uruguay, I think everybody knew we could beat them – I think the whole world was supporting us,” said Sarpei.

“The way we play the game: we’re playing on the front, we’re attacking in front. We try to enjoy the game. When you see Ghana, it’s like you’re listening to music because the ball is flowing,” he added,

  • Coronavirus: Survey suggests business confidence at record low

Business confidence in many areas of the economy is at a record low, a new survey has indicated.

The Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC) survey suggests retail and construction have been among the worst hit sectors during the Covid-19 crisis.

But 95% of tourism firms also reported a fall in business confidence.

The SCC said the UK and Scottish governments need to accelerate investment plans in order to prevent a “tsunami of jobs” being lost.

The survey, conducted between April and June, found cash flow has sunk to a record low in many industries, with a high number of companies applying for credit to see themselves through lockdown.

Tim Allan, president of the SCC, said: “In many instances, these results are among the worst over the 30-year history of the survey.

“It is critical that governments in Holyrood and Westminster continue to provide business support for companies during and beyond the easing of lockdown restrictions.

“A sudden end to these vital financial support measures would not be welcome by anyone and a tsunami of jobs would disappear overnight.”

Mr Allan warned local economies “may be lost forever if action is not taken now”.

The quarterly SCC survey covered 525 firms operating in Scotland and it shows a 70% decrease in confidence in the construction sector.

Elsewhere, around half of manufacturing firms in the survey reported falls in orders and sales revenue trends in retail “have massively fallen”.

Prof Graeme Roy, director at the University of Strathclyde’s Fraser of Allander Institute, said that the latest survey painted a sombre picture of the scale of the challenge now facing the Scottish economy.

He added: “What is particularly worrying is the employment outlook. The survey shows a clear warning of what is to come, with a sharp rise in unemployment now inevitable as businesses adjust to a new normal.

“The immediate priority for many businesses is survival.”

    ‘Swept into poverty’

Meanwhile, Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS) has warned the response to the coronavirus crisis will be “vital for defining the next decade”.

The charity has reported a surge in the number of people seeking advice on redundancy.

CAS social justice spokeswoman Mhoraig Green said: “This is a stark increase in demand for advice around redundancy, it’s clear that the economic impact of Covid-19 is being felt now.

“We need an approach that protects jobs and creates new ones, as well as strengthening the social security safety net to prevent people being swept into poverty by an economic storm.”

  • Over 600 NPP members defect to NDC in Dome-Kwabenya

A gathering of people numbering around six hundred and thirty-eight (638) in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency professing to be members of the ruling New Patriotic Government  (NPP) have defect to the National Democratic  Congress (NDC) in dissent of the administration’s inability to address their necessities in the territory.

The gathering led by one Brilliant Opuni Karikari, convened at the party’s office in Taifa to outline their dissatisfaction and frustration with their Member of Parliament (MP), Sara Adwoa Sarfo adding that she failed to initiate formative tasks as she guaranteed in 2012 and 2016 Parliamentary elections.

At a question and answer session at Taifa Mail station on Sunday, Mr Karikari, together with the others proclaimed their allegiance to the NDC’s up-and-coming politician, Madam Elikplim Akurugu.

“Our sister, the MP, Adwoa Sarfo has baffled we all. Our streets are truly horrendous; potholes have become as profound as barrels and our kin continue experiencing floods from time to time. We vote to get individuals to lead us and initiate our formative plan, however today that can’t be said about our MP who we upheld to Parliament,” Karikari told press men.

He said the MP didn’t demonstrate any worry to the occupants during the COVID-19 lockdown and furthermore neglected to meet gatherings inside  on formative issues.

“The NDC competitor, Elikplim Akurugu is the person who has been meeting gatherings to guarantee them of her help. She has even helped chip away at the potholes on our streets which was our anxiety. She likewise conveyed staples to the individuals during the lockdown time frame when our MP was mysteriously gone, so we will bolster the NDC to win the seat,” Karikari included.

Sources state the MP’s exhibition over the most recent 8 years had gone under investigation among top gathering authorities in the electorate for which reason Mike Oquaye had the help to challenge Madam Adwoa Sarfo.

We are yet to hear from the camp of NPP about the situation.

  • UN staff in Israel sex-act video suspended without pay

The United Nations has placed two of its workers on unpaid leave over allegations of sexual misconduct in an official car in Israel.

The men were filmed in a UN-marked vehicle on a main street by Tel Aviv’s seafront.

In the video, a woman in a red dress is seen straddling a man in the back seat of the car.

The UN launched an investigation into the 18-second video after it was shared widely on social media last month.

Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN’s secretary general, said he was “shocked and deeply disturbed” by the footage.

Now the UN says the men in the video have been identified as staff members of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), UN military observers based in Israel.

The two staff members have been suspended without pay until the investigation into the incident has concluded.

Mr Dujarric told the BBC on Thursday their suspension was appropriate “given the seriousness of the allegations of failing to observe the standards of conduct expected of international civil servants”.

“UNTSO has re-engaged in a robust awareness-raising campaign to remind its personnel of their obligations to the UN Code of Conduct,” Mr Dujarric said.

Third of UN workers sexually harassed UN peacekeepers sexual abuse cases rise The UN has strict policies against sexual misconduct by its staff members.

Staff may be disciplined if they are found to be in breach of conduct rules. They may be repatriated or banned from UN peacekeeping operations, but it is the responsibility of their home nation to take further disciplinary or legal action.

The UN has long been under scrutiny over allegations of sexual misconduct by its peacekeepers and other staff. There have been frequent allegations in recent years.

In 2019, there were 175 allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse against UN staff members, a report said. Of those allegations, 16 were substantiated, 15 were unsubstantiated and all others were still being investigated.

Secretary General António Guterres has pledged to take a “zero-tolerance” approach to sexual misconduct within the UN’s ranks.

  • Fish farmers in Kwahu area seek market for produce

Fish farmers in the Kwahu area are looking for a market for their produce, following the negative impact of the Coronavirus on their businesses.

This came to light when the Fisheries Commission visited selected fish farms in the Kwahu area to assess the impact of the coronavirus on their business.

At the fish farm of Mr Yaw Sarpong at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region, he told the Ghana News Agency(GNA) that he could not get market for his fish over four tons of tilapia and catfish produced by his farm early this year because of coronavirus.

Mr Sarpong said he stocked the fish to meet the Kwahu Easter festival but the festival was called off because of COVID-19 and expressed his frustrations and appealed to people to come and buy the fish.

Mr Sarpong explained that he started the venture less than a year ago and was hoping for things to go smoothly but now the opposite had happened.

He currently employs one permanent worker and four casual workers and said he spends GhC100.00 a day to feed the overgrown fishes and appealed to private entities and government to buy the fish.

At the Family and Friends Fish Farm, the Farm Manager, Mr Omari Evans said they could not get customers for the fish produce by the farm because of the coronavirus and the drive-in the restaurant attached to the farm for selling of the processed fish is also out of operations because of the virus.

The farm employs four workers and is still maintaining all of them.

Ms Linda Bana, the New Juaben Zonal Director, who led the team on the visit to find out the impact of COVID-19 on aquaculture in the Eastern Region thanked the farmers for their hard work and dedication in feeding Mother Ghana.

  • US firms create record 4.8 million jobs in June

The US economy created jobs at a record pace in June as firms took on more staff after the coronavirus downturn.

Payrolls surged 4.8 million, the most since the Labor Department began keeping records in 1939, helped by the reopening of factories and restaurants.

It follows May’s jobs rebound, when 2.5 million joined the labour market, and comes after consumer spending data saw a jump in activity.

But a recent spike in Covid-19 cases has raised fears for continued growth.

June’s rise is far higher than the three million jobs that many economists forecast would be created last month.

However, separate Labor Department data also showed that in the week ending 27 June, initial claims for unemployment fell only slightly, to 1.43 million, on the previous week.

Oxford Economics called it a “worryingly small decline”.

Companies, including in populous states such as California, Florida and Texas, plan to scale back or delay reopening because of the fresh coronavirus outbreaks, which would hold back hiring.

This week, Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell acknowledged the rebound in activity, saying the economy had “entered an important new phase”. But he warned that continuing growth would depend on “our success in containing the virus”.

And despite two months in a row of jobs growth, employment is still about 15 million below its pre-pandemic level, with the jobless rate just above 11%.

  • Mexican drug rehab centre stormed by gunmen

Gunmen have stormed a drug rehabilitation centre in central Mexico, killing 24 people.

At least seven others were injured including three seriously in the attack on Wednesday, according to police.

It is the second attack at a rehab facility in Irapuato, Guanajuato, within a month, and one of the mostly deadly massacres this year.

The motive is unknown but gangs often target clinics where they believe members of rival factions are hiding.

The latest rehab centre to be hit was not officially registered, according to authorities.

The state has hundreds of unofficial treatment centres. The prior attack – at a nearby centre called Starting a New Life – killed 10 people.

Police told local media that, in the latest ambush, several gunmen jumped out of a truck and rushed into the building, where they forced those present to drop to the floor before shooting them.

Witnesses said relatives rushed to the scene and some women – believed to have sons being treated inside – collapsed as the news broke.

Guanajuato’s Attorney General Carlos Zamarripa called it a “cowardly” attack.

A turf war has erupted in Guanajuato, where the local Santa Rosa de Lima gang vies with the brutal Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which has become one of the country’s most dominant organised crime groups.

It is not yet known if either of the groups was involved in most recent attack.

“We have no information on those responsible. There is no data regarding the vehicles or the people,” police told local media in the immediate aftermath.

However, State Governor Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo said gangs appeared to have been involved.

“I deeply regret and condemn the events in Irapuato this afternoon,” he wrote on Twitter. “The violence generated by organised crime not only takes the lives of the young, but it takes the peace from families in Guanajuato.”

The state now has the highest number of homicides in the country, according to the National Public Security System (SNSP).

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who came into power at the end of 2018, vowed to crack down on the gang violence. However, the national murder rate reached an all-time high in 2019 and this year has brought some high-profile attacks.

Last week, an assassination attempt was made on a Mexico City police chief.

Omar García Harfuch survived after his car was ambushed, but three others – two bodyguards and one passer-by – died in the gunfire.

A federal judge, Uriel Villegas Ortiz, and his wife, Verónica Barajas, were murdered in June.

Both attacks are believed to be linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, but this has not been confirmed as investigations are ongoing.

  • Hundreds arrested as crime chat network cracked

A top-secret communications system used by criminals to trade drugs and guns has been “successfully penetrated”, says the National Crime Agency.

The NCA worked with forces across Europe on the UK’s “biggest and most significant” law enforcement operation.

Major crime figures were among over 800 Europe-wide arrests after messages on EncroChat were intercepted and decoded.

More than two tonnes of drugs, several dozen guns and £54m in suspect cash have been seized, says the NCA.

While the NCA was part of the investigation, it was initiated and led by French and Dutch police, and also involved Europol – the EU agency for law enforcement cooperation.

Wil van Gemert, deputy executive director of Europol, told a press conference in the Hague that the hacking of the network had allowed the “disruption of criminal activities including violent attacks, corruption, attempted murders and large-scale drug transports”.

The NCA says the Europe-wide operation, which lasted over three months and involved police forces across the UK, has had the biggest impact on organised crime gangs it has ever seen.

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Dame Cressida Dick, whose force made 171 of the 746 UK arrests and seized £13.3m in cash, described it as a “game changer”.

She said: “This is just the beginning. We will be disrupting organised criminal networks as a result of these operations for weeks and months and possibly years to come.”

Nikki Holland, NCA director of investigations, said the operational team had described it “as akin to cracking the enigma code”.

“They see this as that significant in terms of getting that inside information, effectively having a person inside an organised crime group telling us what they’re up to,” she said.

‘Criminal marketplace’ An estimated 60,000 people, among them up to 10,000 in Britain, subscribed to France-based EncroChat, which has now been taken down.

The system operated on customised Android phones and, according to its website, provided “worry-free secure communications”.

Customers had access to features such as self-destructing messages that deleted from the recipient’s device after a certain length of time.

There was also panic wipe, where all the data on the device could be deleted by entering a four-digit code from the lock-screen.

The NCA says the messaging system has been used as a “criminal marketplace” to co-ordinate the supply of Class A drugs across the world, and import weapons including assault rifles, sub-machine guns, shotguns, pistols and hand grenades.

Law enforcement agencies began getting data from the site on 1 April after the encryption code is believed to have been cracked in March.

Gangs are also believed to have used the handheld devices to plot attacks on rival groups, plan ways of enforcing drug debts and arrange for money to be laundered.

Threats to life detailed on the site included acid attacks and threats to chop off limbs.

Dozens of organised crime groups have been dismantled, says the NCA, with the bulk of arrests in London and north-west England.

Lockdown “worked in our favour”, says the agency, in that many more suspects were at home when they were raided.

Many of those arrested are said to form the “middle tier” of crime gangs while some are described as the “Mr and Mrs Bigs” of the underworld.

In London, those targeted in the Met operation, codenamed “Eternal”, are alleged to include members of “high-harm” organised crime networks with longstanding links to violent crime and drug dealing.

Dame Cressida said: “These people are in business to make enormous amounts of money. Many of them lead a very respectable lifestyle – and definitely a high-end lifestyle in fancy houses with big cars going to… clubs and restaurants, splashing the cash sometimes, but sometimes being very discreet about it.”

The Met said that earlier this month, its detectives identified a plot by an international drugs and firearms gang to shoot dead a member of a rival network.

According to the force, it managed to prevent the shooting by arresting an individual for conspiracy to murder and seizing a loaded pistol, which was believed to be the planned murder weapon.

  • Jeffrey Epstein ex-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell arrested by FBI

British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, an ex-girlfriend of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, is facing charges in the US after being arrested by the FBI.

The six charges include enticing a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts and two counts of perjury.

She was reportedly arrested in New Hampshire and is due in federal court later.

She has denied any involvement in or knowledge of Epstein’s alleged sexual misconduct.

Epstein died in prison on 10 August as he awaited, without the chance of bail, his trial on sex trafficking charges.

He was arrested last year in New York following allegations that he was running a network of underage girls – some as young as 14 – for sex. His death was determined to be suicide.

    What are the charges?

She is charged with conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts; enticing a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts; conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity; and transporting a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.

There are also two counts of perjury. The charge sheet says she “repeatedly lied when questioned about her conduct, including in relation to some of the minor victims”.

    What is the background?

Some of Epstein’s alleged victims say Ms Maxwell brought them into his circle to be sexually abused by him and his friends.

One of Epstein’s alleged victims, Virginia Giuffre, has accused Ms Maxwell of recruiting her as a masseuse to the financier at the age of 15.

Details of that allegation against Ms Maxwell emerged in documents unsealed by a US judge last August in a 2015 defamation case.

Other women have also made allegations that Ms Maxwell was involved. One, Sarah Ransome, told the BBC’s Panorama that Ms Maxwell “controlled the girls. She was like the Madam”.

Ms Maxwell has denied any wrongdoing.

Earlier this year Ms Maxwell sued Epstein’s estate seeking reimbursement for legal fees and security costs. She “receives regular threats to her life and safety”, court documents in that case said.

    Who is Ghislaine Maxwell?

Ms Maxwell is the daughter of late British media mogul Robert Maxwell.

A well-connected socialite, she is said to have introduced Epstein to many of her wealthy and powerful friends, including Bill Clinton and the Duke of York (who was accused in the court papers of touching a woman at Jeffrey Epstein’s US home, although the court subsequently struck out allegations against the duke).

Buckingham Palace has said that “any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors” by the duke was “categorically untrue”.

Ms Maxwell has mostly been out of public view since 2016.

In a BBC interview last year, the Duke of York said he had met up with Ms Maxwell last year, before Epstein was arrested and charged.

However they did not discuss Epstein, he said.

Last month a US prosecutor said Prince Andrew had “sought to falsely portray himself” as eager to cooperate with the inquiry into Epstein.

US attorney Geoffrey Berman said Prince Andrew had “repeatedly declined our request” to schedule an interview.

The duke’s lawyers previously rejected claims he had not co-operated, saying he offered to help three times.

Prince Andrew stepped away from royal duties last year after an interview he gave to the BBC about his relationship with Epstein.

  • Business community calls for intensive fight against coronavirus

Experts in business, education, health and international relations have called on countries to cooperate in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

They said to confront the ravages of COVID-19, countries needed to tackle the virus strategically en masse and forge synergies in the collective fight against the global pandemic.

This was in a statement issued at the end of a week-long International Digital Summit with representation from Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Wednesday.

It said discussions focused on what countries were experiencing as a result of the pandemic and the need to protect citizens in the current situation and future outbreaks.

The virtual summit laid out recommendations to shape the new norm as it had brought unplanned and unpredictable change in global economic, political and social spheres.

It underscored the need for constructive international cooperation as the best way out of the crisis.

The statement said the pandemic had exposed the contradictions of the modern world and that cooperation was the best way forward to help in achieving balance through information sharing, best practices, and cooperation.

Touching on sustainable development, the statement called on countries to actively promote energy efficiency and conservation by adopting a multi-pronged approach to development, including the adoption of new technologies and innovations.

  • Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah now leading the politicians to lie – A Plus jabs

Social Commentator, Kwame A Plus says Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah who hitherto used to expose lying politicians as a journalist is now a leader of the lying crusade.

According to him, Oppong Nkrumah while at the Multimedia Group as Morning Show host tried his best at exposing politicians who lied then and people were of the view that his like joining politics will have changed the status quo.

But since coming to power and his appointment as Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah according to A Plus is now the one lying for the politician; a betrayal of the trust reposed in him by a cross-section of Ghanaians.

A Plus who made this known through a post on Facebook said “My brother Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah was the host of Joy fm super morning show. I remember how he used to ask politicians questions and always tried to expose thier lies. Today he is the one who lies for politicians.”

Accompanying the post was a photo of an untarred road the Minister plies before he gets to his constituency.

A Plus expressed shock at the fact that the Minister was proud in sharing such a photo of a bad road on his page when he has the power to ensure that the roads are tarred.

“He drives on this road in his constituency to go and ask people to come out and register to vote for him. African politicians only care about votes. He is still a very good friend though, if not a brother.”

  • Akuapem Poloo to spend 7 years or more in jail

Akuapem Poloo is in the news since yesterday for bad reasons. She posted an image of herself and her 7-year-old son on Instagram. In the image, she was totally naked and the son was covering only his genitalia. Again, she stated that she baths together with her 7-year-old son and pleaded for any inconveniences caused by her actions.

    Edited for viewers

This got social media talking. From Ghana to Nigeria, many netizens have descended heavily on her for exposing the child to such disgusting move. Later yesterday, Akuapem was invited by the CID to report at their headquarters on 1st July. She did. And subsequently apologized.

But upon a cursory gaze at Ghana’s Criminal law on Child’s Right, any sexual abuse on any child is tantamount to 7 – 25 years imprisonment. Experts have registered their displeasure in the action of the fame craving actress Akuapem Poloo. NGO’s and other law experts have also stated what the law says about exposing children to sexual activities.

Ghana criminal human right law, Child’s right criminal law, Electronic Usage Act and social media laws and regulations have been ridiculed at by the action of Poloo.

Instagram has a strict content policy, but photos aren’t pulled unless someone flags them as inappropriate, meaning lots of risqué stuff still makes it through. Swiftly, Akuapem Poloo was reported and the image was pulled down quickly.

  • Joy FM’s Gary Al-Smith and Bright Simons expose the gov’t again on Covid-19

The Covid-19 which hit Ghana sent the Country into one of its worst states in history.

Corona Virus is not a respecter of persons, race, religion, culture or personality. Some popular people such as the British prime Minister Borris Johnson as well as actors like Edris Elba contracted the disease.

It was no different in Ghana. Joy FM’s Gary Al-Smith contracted same and had to be admitted to the Hospital mid-June.

He was released and discharged about a week ago and is doing well.

Upon his discharge, he voiced out his concerns as a journalist on the state of our health system. However, this was met with skeptism and outrage from some users on social media. Others too rooted for change in the health system upon reading his message.

Late on 1st July, Gary reiterated his previous comments on twitter about the health care sytem. This particular concern was on the delays in testing and the administration of drugs to patients. He made comments on how drugs and testing are given based on ‘who you know’ basis. Below is the ace journalist’s tweet:

Prior to that, Bright Simons, the Vice President of IMANI disclosed his dissatisfaction on how health workers are complaining about politicians who are acting oblivious to the increasing numbers of Covid-19.

In his post, he reports that the health workers threaten to disregard the health of these politicians themselves since they cannot make policies to curb the growing rate of the virus. The health workers also mention that it is those same politicians who call them for advise anytime they think there is a potential symptom of Covid-19, in fear of their own health.

Below is the tweet of Bright Simons:

Gary Al-Smith seems to agree with the stance of the health workers and Bright Simons as well in his tweet.

Gary ended with a message to Ghanaians: “Oman a y3np3 nokor3”

  • Noguchi, KCCR under pressure after closure of 7 coronavirus testing centres

A Research fellow at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) has revealed the seven centres that were set up to assist the Institute in speeding up Covid-19 testing in the country have ceased operating.

Dr Kofi Bonney said the shutdown was necessary because the centres have run out of essentials needed to undertake testing.

This, according to him has mounted undue pressure on NMIMR and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR), the two major testing centres in the country.

“These testing centres have run out of consumables needed for the processing of Covid-19 samples and are yet to be restocked by the Ghana Health Service (GHS),” he disclosed in an interview on Happy FM.

he added that, the machinery of the centres are in good shape but the logistics are what needs in order for testing to resume.

He then admitted that, the current situation is the reason for the enormous backlog of Covid-19 samples.

But, the researcher said Noguchi will begin to use some of the reagents it had stocked earlier to serve as back up in case they not receive any from GHS.

“We will transport some of the samples to the other testing centres and use their machines for the testing. This is a strategy to help us reduce our backlog,” he stated.

  • Military recruiter busted after defrauding 3 nurses

A 32-year-old businessman has been arraigned before court for allegedly defrauding three nurses of GH¢6,400 on the pretext of getting them enlisted into the Ghana Armed Forces.

Prince Essel Ferguson, who is alleged to have posed as Captain Dankwa of the Ghana Army, has pleaded not guilty to four counts of conspiracy to commit crime and defrauding by false pretences when he appeared before the Circuit Court in Accra.

Two others, who are said to have acted with the accused in allegedly defrauding the three nurses of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, are currently on the run.

The court, presided over by Ms Afia Owusu Appiah, granted him bail in the sum of GH¢20,000 with two sureties.

Hearing continues on August 5, 2020.

    Facts

Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecutor, Inspector Samuel Ahiabor, said in August last year, Mr Fergurson met one Leticia Lewah, a senior nurse and a witness in the case at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and asked her for assistance.

The prosecutor said the accused introduced himself as Captain Dankwa of the Military Intelligence Unit who was on secondment in Sudan at the time.

    Contact exchange

He said Mr Ferguson told Ms Lewah that he was at the hospital to investigate a doctor who had been newly recruited into the Ghana Armed Forces and exchanged phone contacts with the nurse.

Two days later, Inspector Ahiabor said, Mr Ferguson called Ms Lewah and asked her whether she had relatives who were interested in being enlisted into the Ghana Armed Forces.

    Slots

The prosecution said Mr Ferguson told Ms Lewah that he had been given three slots in the Ghana Armed Forces, and that he could secure slots for people who were interested in joining the Ghana Army.

Inspector Ahiabor said the nurse later informed two others who were working under her about the opportunity and they expressed interest to be recruited into the force.

The prosecution added that she introduced the accused person to her friends and they began dealing with him in relation with the opportunity.

    Payments

He said Mr Ferguson asked each of the nurses to pay GH¢300 for the purchase of the military recruitment form through mobile money.

Inspector Ahiabor said the three met Mr Ferguson separately to fill the forms after which he took GH¢150 from each of them for fuel.

The prosecution said Mr Ferguson again collected GH¢6,400 from the three for various purposes.

    Suspicion and arrest

But the nurses became suspicious when Mr Ferguson asked them to pay GH¢800 each to settle some army officers.

They then informed Ms Lewah who eventually reported the matter to the military police.

The prosecutor said Mr Ferguson was, however, arrested and handed over to the police when he came over to meet Ms Lewah for the money he had requested for.

During the investigation, the prosecutor said, Mr Ferguson mentioned one Colonel Samba and Majeed, in his caution statement as military officers who were behind the deal.

The two are currently on the run.

Mr Amofa allegedly shouted for help after he was robbed of the amount just in front of his church and it seems the shout for help angered the robbers who shot him before running away.

    Errands

Mr Amofa had been running errands for the church, including assisting the treasurer of the church, and he was sent to withdraw the said amount from the Abrepo Junction branch of Ecobank.

Due to the short distance from the church to the bank, he trekked to the bank and it was when he was about to enter the church premises that he was accosted by the robbers who were on a motorbike.

The first group of two robbers took the money from him and took off and that was when he shouted for help, screaming “thieves, thieves!”

The shout for help angered the second group of two who were also on a motorbike and they shot him.

    Clerk

The Clerk to the church, Mr Stephen Boakye, who confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic, said Mr Amofa was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He said he left behind three children.

The Suame District Police Commander, Superintendent Twum Barima, who corroborated the story, said the police were on a manhunt for the suspects and they believed that the robbers followed the deceased from the bank to church before robbing him.

  • Africa has no choice but to integrate now – Kwesi Quartey

The Deputy Chair Person of the African Union Commission, H.E. Thomas Kwesi Quartey has admitted that the continent of Africa had in years past not been able to integrate effectively particularly in the area of commerce and economics as a result of deliberate partitioning and division of the African Continent by the Europeans who created the Modern African Nations.

He said this is why the continental body of the African Union had the struggle to use the over half a century period gone by to disentangle the continent politically and now focusing on trading among itself through the formation of the Continental Free Trade Area.

“All that the African Union has been trying to do and with the arrival of the Continental Free Trade Area was for a significant part disentangle the knots we were tied in, bring ourselves closer together and Trade with each other.”

Speaking to Eye on Port ahead of the celebration of the maiden African Integration Day scheduled for Tuesday, 7th July 2020, the Deputy Chair of the African Union said the continent had initially focused on political integration of its people but the most opportune time has now presented itself for economic integration.

“It was not until the liberation of South Africa that the whole continent was said to be politically liberated and then the issue now is what to do with this independence through this liberation. Because liberation is nothing if you cannot improve your economic lot.”

He explained that the continent has a lot to celebrate as far as its pursuit for total integration since history clearly shows that International Trade on the continent begun with the capture and sale of human beings.

“Intra Africa Trade is 10%. Whenever there is an increase in Intra Africa Trade by even 2%, GDP rises by a factor of 10. So it is important for us as Africans to move freely within our continent to trade within ourselves and create a larger economic space, which will attract investment.”

He said the coming into being of the African Continental Free Trade Area is only a first step to many targets set by the continent to liberate itself and develop together.

“And the more the Free Trade Area begins to yield benefits, the more people will warm-up to it. We have to see more and more of the continental interest and less and less the international interest”.

H.E. Kwesi Quartey admitted, that one of the major challenges in integrating the continent had been member countries focusing on their national interests far beyond that of the region.

“One also has to be realistic that sovereign nations can only be persuaded and not compelled.”

He said it had been difficult to push or force sovereign nations to comply with protocols or treaties and policies but added that AfCFTA has been received with a renewed enthusiasm by member countries.

“I think that the Continental Free Trade Area was received with a certain amount of Enthusiasm which has been above average.”

He commended efforts by member countries and institutions for commitment demonstrated thus far.

H.E. Kwesi Quartey confirmed to Eye on Port that the initial plans to commence implementation of AfCFTA by July 1, 2020, will no longer materialize since member countries have spent the better part of the year 2020 ensuring the survival of their citizens in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I think 1st January or so is the time for it to come to operation. We were supposed to have a summit meeting in May, that has been pushed to September, October or so. Everything has been pushed back a little bit.”

He revealed that though the COVID-19 has greatly affected every facet of the continent, it has also demonstrated coordination among member countries as the continent has exhibited resilience to the amazement of many in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

“It has shown us the extra value of working together rather than working as individual nations.”

On opening up borders and easing up restrictions as a measure of returning to normalcy in the face of the global pandemic, H.E. Kwesi Quarter advised such initiatives must be on country-specific bases depending on their own preparedness.

The AU Deputy Chairperson urged that the continent has no choice but to economically integrate and to do so now.

“I will quote directly from Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The thesis; Africa must Unite remains unassailable, the logic of history leads us to unity. We have no choice.”

  • Environmental risk of PPEs: Punish persons who do not dispose PPEs appropriately – GWS

The Conservation Education Officer of the Ghana Wildlife Society, Louisa Kabobah, has advised the general public to be more cautious in the disposal of personal protective equipment like nose masks, face shield, gloves among others.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, she said that the improper disposal of these plastic PPEs is gradually polluting the environment and has pushed for the use of nose masks made from fabric.

Individuals are now littering the streets with plastic sanitizer bottles, nose masks and gloves in a time where Ghana is still struggling with proper management of plastic waste.

“People should rather go in for the fabric nose masks instead of the disposable ones, it even saves you money. You can use old or new fabrics to make them… the only caution people should take is to wash them properly before your next use,” she said.

Adding that, “There are instances when you are walking on the streets and you see masks on the floor, the best way to go is to properly dispose them into bins that are covered to prevent people from getting into contact with your used masks”.

Currently, the government has enforced the mandatory wearing of nose mask in the country, it is an offence to not wear a face mask in public. Persons who are caught violating this directive risk facing a prison sentence of 4 to 10 years or a fine of GH¢12,000 to GH¢60,000 or both.

Disposable PPEs from hospitals and private individuals are now ending up in the sea, this new trend is endangering aquatic lives. In the case of Ghana, Louisa Kabobah told GhanaWeb that laws must be enforced to punish those who are found littering with their PPEs.

“Just as we have sanctions for not wearing nose masks, there should equally be one for improper disposal. If the law deals with people who are culpable it will send a warning to others,” she advised.

  • Tackle corruption effectively Dalex Finance CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of Dalex Finance, Mr Ken Thompson has asked the government to deal with the increasing rate of corruption in the country.

He said this will enable the government to raise the revenue that would have gone into wrong pockets, for the needed development of the country especially in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Thompson told Alfred Ocansey on the Sunrise show on 3 91.7FM Wednesday, July 1 that “these are unprecedented times and we have to take unprecedented actions.”

He was contributing to a discussion regarding how the government can raise revenue to support the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said: “We really need to start to look at how to address the issues and how to help the people that are most vulnerable in our society.

“The government has a huge role to pay because the government is in the position to be able to mobilize resources to direct how we behave. The government is all of us and we have to keep talking until we do the right things.

“We have to reset and the resetting involves widening the tax net, the resetting is how do I get people producing things locally? We have to talk about that because if even 500millon dollars or 2bn is done locally, it creates opportunities for all of us.”

He added: “Underlining all these is we have got to deal with corruption. There must be incentives to do the right things and if you do the wrong thing you must be punished for it. These are unprecedented times and we have got to take unprecedented actions.”
