  • Ghana, Japan sign US$1m Tema Motorway grant agreement

The government of Ghana has signed a US$1,000,000 (109 million Yen) grant assistant agreement with Japan for phase two of the Tema Motorway roundabout project.

The grant will be used for the construction of flyovers at the arterial roads in Tema to alleviate traffic congestion and improve the business environment.

The project builds on the magnificent high-quality phase one Tema roundabout project which was financed with a grant of US$56 million (six billion Yen) secured from the Japanese government and commissioned by President Akufo-Addo on June 5.

The phase one comprised a two-tier intersection, a tunnel in the east-west direction, four kilometres of improved roads, four pedestrian bridges, one at each approach to the intersection, and the construction of several drainage structures.

Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Himeno Tsutomu said: “These Grant Assistance are the showcase of the strong Japan-Ghana friendship and partnership.”

He noted that it was the wish of the people and the government of Japan that these projects will make a valuable contribution in the area of road infrastructure.

Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Charles Owiredu, said the phase two of the project, which is scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of this year, would see the transformation of the parallel two-tier interchange into a three-tier one to further improve the turnaround time at the interchange.

Besides the Tema Motorway Roundabout project, the Deputy Minister said the Japanese government is also supporting Ghana in the construction of a new bridge across the Volta River on the Eastern corridor, among other ongoing projects in the country.

“It is my hope that the projects, when completed, would ensure safe, efficient road transportation and contribute to the efficient flow of goods and services,” he added.

  • GFA didn’t do enough to get the league restarted – JE Sarpong

Veteran Ghanaian coach Joseph E. Sarpong is not pleased with the decision to cancel the league due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The former Ghana Premier League trainer insists the Football Association did not do enough to convince authorities to give them clearance to continue the league which had been suspended since March.

The GFA announced the decision to cancel the league on Tuesday. The GFA said all records associated with the season have been expunged with no demotion and promotion

This after attempts to get the league restarted failed. Their initial proposal to the government to ease restrictions on its events to enable the resumption of football activities was rejected.

They also engaged the government over the possible resumption of the league under strict safety protocols such as playing matches behind closed doors, players testing regularly and teams training in small groups.

“The inaction of the Ghana Football Association caused the cancellation of the league. They didn’t put in enough effort to get the league restarted. They didn’t do enough to ensure that the league bounces back,” Coach J.E Sarpong told Akoma 87.9 FM.

According to GFA spokesperson, the league cancellation has led to the loss of sponsorship revenue of more than $2 million.

  • Coach Sarpong backs GFA on the cancellation of football season

Veteran coach, Joseph E. Sarpong, has said the cancellation of the 2019/20 football season is the right decision by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The Executive Council of the GFA on Tuesday, June 30, announced the annulment of all records associated with the 2019/20 football season with no demotion and promotion amid the Coronavirus pandemic which prompted a halt of the season back in March.

The highly experienced Coach Sarpong described the step taken by the GFA as a bold one and presents them with an opportune time to prepare very well for the next football season and also to safeguard lives amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

“The decision to cancel the league was imminent considering the stringent measures put in place by the Government to help curb the spread of the virus.

“Some people thought we could join the European countries in resuming our league forgetting that we don’t have sponsors to help fund clubs to follow the basic health guidelines for the safe return of football.

“All we need to do is to plan very well for the next football season and synchronize our calendar with that of the Europeans,” he told GNA Sports.

When asked about the decision of the GFA to name Ashantigold and Asante Kotoko as representatives for Africa, coach Sarpong said, “the GFA’s decision is in accordance with CAF statues because they two clubs did represent us in previous competitions on the continent.

“The question as to whether they would be ready for the competition should be left for the clubs to decide because it is important they represent us to we don’t lose our slots in Africa’s club competition.”

The Executive Council of the GFA would on Thursday, July 2, 2020, meet to discuss issues relating to the next football and the possibility of holding a Congress.

  • Phase 2 of Makola redevelopment project to commence in July 2020 – AMA boss

The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, has announced that the second phase of the Makola redevelopment project would commence in July 2020.

He disclosed this on Monday at a stakeholder engagement held at the 31st December Makola Market to interact with leadership and occupants of the sheds to be affected, adding that the second phase would see the reconstruction of shed nine to accommodate some 270 stalls.

According to him, the commencement of the project follows the successful completion of shed eight under the first phase of the project, adding that work is expected to be completed in less than a year.

He expressed his appreciation to the traders for their cooperation during the first phase, and was hopeful they would continue to cooperate to ensure the successful completion of the second phase of the project, which is intended to accommodate more stalls.

“We thank you all for your cooperation and understanding; as you are aware, we are working in phases, one at a time. This is to ensure that we do not bring the entire market down before reconstructing… The delay was due to unavailability of funds, but now that we have secured the funds, work must begin,” he said.

He urged the traders to relocate to the temporary shed provided by the assembly within two weeks to enable work to begin.

The mayor also used the opportunity to educate the traders on the need to strictly adhere to all the COVID-19 preventive protocols in order to curb the spread of the virus in the city.

Some market women who spoke at the engagement expressed their gratitude to the assembly, citing conducive trading environment and improved security in the market, among others, as some benefits they were currently enjoying after the completion of the first phase.

Located in the heart of the city, the Makola Market, a legendary shopping place constructed in 1924 and which is the main wholesale and retail market place in the city, also serves as the centre of trade in the country and one of the nation’s most essential social and cultural institution. It has been redeveloped with the shed, which was initially built to be occupied by 180 traders but expanded to accommodate over 200 traders.

Products sold in the market range from manufactured and imported foods, fresh produce, clothes, shoes, tools, medicines, pots and pans to jewellery made from locally handcrafted beads.

“It is a concern that we cannot continuously play our league for some time now but given the current situation, it is important to consider human lives than football. It is not the fault of the GFA in cancelling the league and not fulfilling their part of the contract. We will hold a discussion with the GFA to find an amicable way of reaching a consensus”he said.

He further stated that StarTimes as a stakeholder is only interested in the progress of Ghana football and for that matter, the decision to cancel the league may not sit well with the Mother Company.

  • Gunfight in Asante Akyem North NPP

At least one person has suffered gunshot wounds after a fierce gun battle ensued between two factions in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asante Akyem North Constituency yesterday.

Supporters of the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Andy Appiah Kubi, and former MP for the constituency, Kwadwo Baah Agyeman, allegedly clashed in a bloody fashion in broad daylight.

The two feuding factions were said to be heavily armed so they engaged in a dangerous gun battle.

What sparked the gun battle between supporters of the two top politicians in the hitherto peaceful constituency on Tuesday could not be readily known by DAILY GUIDE, but a source is saying that it might have something to do with the constituency primary contested by the two top party members.

    Long-Standing Animosity

According to sources in the area, animosity has existed between Andy Appiah Kubi and Kwadwo Baah Agyeman for some years now, and it has spread to their supporters.

They said the bad blood between the two had deepened after Andy Appiah Kubi won recent NPP parliamentary polls in the area, which Kwadwo Baah Agyeman had said was not recognized by the party because of an injunction placed on the process.

    Shooting Incident

Eyewitnesses disclosed that the supporters of the two politicians from nowhere were seen marching through the streets and firing gunshots at opposite directions.

The sporadic gunshots were said to have forced fear-stricken residents to run helter-skelter for cover.

According to sources in the constituency, both sides suffered injuries during the fierce clash. Besides, they alleged that an innocent person was sadly hit by a stray bullet.

It took the timely intervention of the police to calm down the two blood-thirsty factions.

Reports making rounds indicated that the police managed to apprehend and detain some people in connection with the shooting incident.

The traditional leaders in the area were also said to be angry over the shooting incident, so they were planning to meet the two factions yesterday for amicable solution.

  • Haile Selassie: Statue of former Ethiopian leader destroyed in London park

A statue of former Ethiopian leader Haile Selassie has been destroyed in a park in Wimbledon, south-west London.

Police are investigating the incident, which took place in Cannizaro Park on Tuesday evening.

The damage to the bust was carried out by a group of around 100 people, according to an eyewitness.

It appears to be linked to unrest in Ethiopia sparked after a popular singer, Hachalu Hundessa, was shot dead earlier this week.

Demonstrations following his death saw a statue of royal prince Ras Makonnen Wolde Mikael, the father of Selassie, Ethiopia’s last emperor, torn down in the city of Harar in eastern Ethiopia.

Many ethnic Oromos say they were oppressed under Haile Selassie’s reign and their language and traditional religion were banned.

Police are randomly stopping people in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, seeking their consent for coronavirus testing.

The exercise kicked off on Thursday morning on some roads and entry points.

Rwandan health authorities say this “will provide factual information about the Covid-19 status in the capital”.

From March, Rwanda has conducted more than 140,000 tests. More than 1,000 have recorded positive results.

Identified as Mark Ampofo, 50, the caretaker was attacked while entering the church premises after returning from the bank, where he had reportedly withdrawn GH¢4,200.

Unknown to Ampofo, who was on foot, the hoodlums who rode two motorbikes were tracing him. One of the hoodlums eventually snatched the money from him in the full glare of the public on Tuesday afternoon, but the caretaker who was not ready to surrender the money then shouted “thief! thief!” to draw the attention of the public.

In the process, another robber, who rode a different motorbike, appeared at the scene and shot him and they all bolted with their motorbikes. The daylight robbery subsequently attracted a sizeable number of people to the scene.

  • Akuapem Poloo’s 7-year-old son can be taken away from her – Social Welfare Department

Samuel Anaglattey, Head of Foster Care Services Unit at the Department of Social Welfare has revealed that the 7-year-old son of popular actress Rosemond Brown aka Akuapem Poloo can be taken from her for safety reasons when need be.

According to him, the Social Welfare Department has the mandate to remove the child from his mother, if findings from their investigations suggest that the child is in harms way.

“That is dependent on the sort of investigation we have conducted, but I’m just letting you know that it could get worse. We have that right to separate the child from her, or remove the child from the environment.”

The actress has been heavily criticized for posting a nude photo of herself and her son to mark the child’s 7th birthday.

Speaking to GhanaWeb in an exclusive interview on July 2, 2020, about the issue, Mr Anaglattey stated that the department’s main focus is to find out if Akuapem Poloo’s son is not in danger now or even in the future.

“In situations like these, it is the child that is the main focus. We all know the problems a thing like this will pose for children now and in the future. And what it this is likely to pose for other children. As she has exposed the child, nobody knows the length at which they have gone, we have only seen this picture.”

He told GhanaWeb that the gravity of Akuapem Poloo’s act is that she does not only put her son in danger, but also endangers other innocent children psychologically.

“The child can pick up certain behaviours that will make him a threat to other children. He goes to school and he starts touching other children, starts exposing himself to other children of his age. So he now goes out there and starts corrupting the minds of other children.”

The future repercussion of her actions on her son is that he becomes a victim of stigmatization.

“It also poses a lot of moral danger to the child because he can fall victim to stigmatization. He can be called names, as a result of his mother’s pornographic photo,” he told GhanaWeb.

The Head of Foster Care Services Unit of the Social Welfare Department said, the controversial actress is supposed to report to the department today, July 2, 2020, for investigations to begin. He reiterated that the actress had earlier on declined several invitations sent to her.

“When this happens, we do an assessment and we think that there are a lot more issues out there that can continue corrupting the child. She has apologized on the internet but we have invited her, she hasn’t come.”

He explained that the invitation is to take Akuapem Poloo through counseling therapy since she claimed, she was not in the known that posing nude in front of her son was offensive.

“The reason why we invited her is to see if we can counsel her because she said she didn’t know what she did was wrong. So we wanted to invite her, assess her and take her through little counseling so that she knows how to handle issues like this in the future.

Mr. Anaglattey emphasized that should the actress fail to report to the unit today, the unit will locate her and begin their assessment.

“She hasn’t come to the office, we are expecting that she comes today. If she doesn’t come, what can happen is that we will try and locate her, do an assessment.

It could get so bad that we may decide to even remove the child from the environment until we are done working on her before we can return the child to her. So immediately, we are waiting for her to come, it’s just unfortunate we can’t locate her. We will talk to her and continue with our assessment.”

He concluded that the findings from the assessment will determine the necessary action to be taken, which is geared towards the interest of the child.

“If at the end of the day, we come out with the conclusion that the child is still safe with her but we just have to keep an eye on her and monitor her. If we think the child is in danger, we have the mandate to remove the child from her based on the child’s best interest.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection on Wednesday called on the public to stop posting the nude pictures of Ms. Rosemond Brown on social media platforms.

  • V/R Military deployment: NDC’s ‘scaremongering’ campaign needless – Kweku Baako

Seasoned journalist, Kweku Baako has slammed the leadership and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over their comments on the military deployment to the Volta Region.

    NDC On Security Deployment

Some residents in the Volta Region raised eyebrows over heavy security presence in the Region.

Addressing the concerns of the people, the NDC Minority in Parliament issued a day ultimatum to the government to withdraw the military personnel.

Chairman of the Volta Regional Caucus, Emmanuel Bedzrah and Minority Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa called for the troops to be recalled to their barracks.

Minority Spokesperson on Defence and Interior, James Agalga, also accused the government of deploying the Military to intimidate Voltarians and prevent them from participating in the new voters’ registration exercise.

”There is a certain scheme which is designed by the government to intimidate our teeming supporters from coming out in their numbers to register and have their names on the new voter register”, he said.

    Ex-Prez Mahama’s Statements

Former President John Dramani Mahama also scolded President Nana Akufo-Addo for sanctioning the deployment of security personnel in the Volta Region.

According to him, he has ”sufficient reason to believe that there is merit in the concerns raised by the residents of these Regions. This represents another unprecedented low in the shameless abuse of state power to attack the very citizens whose safety and security the Akufo-Addo government should be protecting. It is becoming evident by the day, that the Akufo-Addo government perceives political power as an end in itself hence the resort to such crude and high-handed measures to usurp the mandate of the people.

“To send troops into regions in times of peace for the sole purpose of preventing them from registration amounts to declaring war on them. Any President sanctioning this sort of activity stands in breach of his oath to the people of Ghana. Any President doing this, commits a grave sin against the very people he swore to protect. No one would have imagined that a Ghanaian government would be so obsessed with hanging on to power as to subject its own citizens to such mistreatment and execute an ethno-tribal agenda of this magnitude against them,” a statement released by his office read.

    Scaremongering Campaign

Addressing the issue on ”Kokrokoo” on Peace FM, Kweku Baako said the NDC is embarking on a ”scaremongering campaign”.

He questioned the logic in NDC’s claims and advised them to stop creating tension.

To him, the NDC’s argument that the security personnel have been charged to prevent people from partaking in the registration exercise has been defeated by the huge turnout to the ongoing registration exercise across the nation.

“The total effect of that scaremongering campaign was that the Military personnel had been deployed to put fear in potential applicants who would want to register in order to exercise their democratic right. The figures coming out is indicating that people are out there exercising their right. The Military personnel are not at the registration center creating any chaos and fear,” he said.

  • Adriano Galliano discloses why Prince Boateng turned down Monza

Chief Executive Officer of Monza Adriano Galliani has revealed that his outfit made an approach for Kevin-Prince Boateng but his wage demands knocked them off.

Boateng left Turkish side Besiktas on loan from Fiorentina with the option to purchase this summer.

The 33-year-old’s career at the Vodafone Park started on a bright note, scoring two goals in his four appearances before the league was suspended amid the coronavirus crisis.

The forward has failed to replicate the form he demonstrated before the forced break prompting the club to send him back to Fiorentina.

“Let’s not forget that Monza is 100% Fininvest. With such a solid and ambitious ownership, no player contacted refuses to play with us,” said Galliani.

  • Ghana Women’s Premier League players to receive 500 cedis monthly allowance

Ghana’s government is splashing $288,000 to pay players in the Women Premier League some allowances to help them overcome the negative economic impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

This comes after the Ghana FA reached an agreement with government to enrol players in the women’s top-flight league on the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).

Beginning from July 2020, 480 players from the Women’s Premier League will receive an amount of 500 cedis per month for the next six months.

This means the government agency YEA will spend 240,000 monthly on the players as they seek to support the football industry to help them overcome the economic impact of the pandemic.

This means for the next six months the YEA will spend 1,440,000 cedis or $288,000 on the players as the GFA pushes for government to offer more support to the football industry.

  • Coronavirus: Plane-maker Airbus to cut 15,000 jobs

Aerospace giant Airbus says it plans to cut 15,000 jobs as it deals with the effects of the coronavirus crisis.

It will cut 1,700 jobs in the UK, along with thousands more in Germany, Spain and elsewhere.

The move is subject to talks with unions which have opposed compulsory redundancies.

The Unite union said the Airbus announcement was “another act of industrial vandalism” against the UK aerospace sector.

Some 134,000 people work for Airbus worldwide, with around a tenth of them in the UK.

The firm said the UK cuts would fall only on the commercial aircraft division at its two sites at Broughton in Flintshire and Filton, Bristol.

More details of the job losses and how they will break down between the two giant factories will come at the end of the week after talks with unions.

However, Unite said it expected 1,116 manufacturing jobs and 611 office-based jobs to go, shrinking Airbus’s UK workforce by 15%.

These cuts were inevitable. The only question was just how severe the pain would be.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been little short of catastrophic for the airline industry. At one point in April, global air traffic was down by more than 90%.

When planes aren’t flying, they aren’t earning money. Yet they still need to be maintained and leasing costs or loans still need to be paid.

The result? Airlines are struggling to survive and simply can’t afford to take on new planes right now. And that, of course, means Airbus has had to curb production.

Airbus has delayed these cuts and has made full use of support from governments. But ultimately it had little choice.

And the pain being felt in places such as Broughton, Toulouse and Hamburg will echo through the entire supply chain.

The firm expects to make the cuts by summer 2021, but hopes the majority of redundancies will be voluntary or through early retirement of staff.

The company warned in April that it was “bleeding cash at an unprecedented speed” as it struggled with the impact of the coronavirus crisis.

    ‘Gravest crisis’

It said on Tuesday that production had dropped by 40% in recent months, and that it did not expect air traffic to get back to pre-pandemic levels until 2023 at the earliest.

“Airbus is facing the gravest crisis this industry has ever experienced,” said chief executive Guillaume Faury. “The measures we have taken so far have enabled us to absorb the initial shock of this global pandemic.

“Now, we must ensure that we can sustain our enterprise and emerge from the crisis as a healthy, global aerospace leader, adjusting to the overwhelming challenges of our customers.”

News of the cuts comes as the international aviation industry reels from the impact of the pandemic. On Tuesday, EasyJet said it would close three UK bases and cut about 2,000 staff.

And Reuters reported that Air France/KLM was targeting more than 6,500 job cuts over the next two years.

Jim McMahon, Labour’s shadow transport secretary, called for more government support in the UK.

“Labour has consistently called for an extension to the furlough in the most impacted industries, and a sectoral deal that supports the whole aviation industry including securing jobs and protecting the supply chain, while continuing to press for higher environmental standards.”

A government spokesman said: “We understand this will be a difficult time for Airbus’s employees and their families, and we stand ready to support anyone affected in any way we can.

“We will continue to work closely with the sector to ensure firms are able to rebuild as the civil aviation market recovers.”

  • Use stimulus to keep an up-to-date record of MSMEs in the country

Tasked with the mandate to distribute the GH¢600million stimulus package to MSMEs in the country, the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) has decried the lack of adequate data from several micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to access the loan.

We are happy that the NBSSI is resolved to solve that problem, and has consequently distributed 70 laptops and printers to its member-associations to enhance their ability to gather and update data of its members.

The computers are also to help the association assist its members to apply for the loans and track the progress of their applications.

Executive Director of NBSSI, Kosi Yankey-Ayeh, had cause to complain when she observed that the reason why we gave them this is that the majority of associations were not able to bring proper data on their members and where they are located.

“This brought a lot of challenges when it came to working with associations to disburse the money.”

Last week, the NBSSI began the disbursement of GH¢1million to 1,000 applicants under the first tranche of the GH¢1 billion Coronavirus Alleviation Programme (CAP) business support scheme.

We believe this presents a perfect opportunity to formalise the informal sector, and the NBSSI can be the vehicle that achieves this objective since it will oversee disbursement of the stimulus package and keep a proper database on all Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country.

The criteria required to access the stimulus package requires documentation and honouring tax obligations among others, and the Trades Union Congress (TUC) sees this a starting point to formalise the informal economy by creating the needed database.

The distribution of laptops and printers is a step in the right direction by the NBSSI to ensure that MSMEs keep proper records, as this has been one of the handicaps causing SMEs to be denied access to credit because they lack proper book-keeping.

The NBSSI has traditionally offered refresher courses for many MSMEs to sharpen their book-keeping skills.
