  • World Bank chief says coronavirus pandemic widening inequality gap

World Bank President David Malpass said on Wednesday that the coronavirus pandemic was exacerbating inequality throughout the world by hitting hardest those without a social safety net in developing countries while central bank asset purchases in advanced countries benefit the richest.

Malpass told a webcast event hosted by the Council of the Americas the coronavirus pandemic was a “catastrophe” for the developing world that would bring long-term damage and global economic output would not recover to its pre-pandemic level for years.

  • How Sir John’s death was ‘foreseen’ by a Twitter user

Sad news came in in the late hours of the 1st day of July 2020. It had to do with the unfortunate demise of one of the NPP’s strongest characters, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John. He served as the former NPP general secretary, and was very active during the court appeal after the 2012 elections.

One might almost say his death was unforeseen and unexpected. But do you know how coincidental it can be that someone speaks or remembers someone, and just then something happens to the person. For, example, the Akans have a saying to this effect, that if you mention someone’s name in their absence, and they do not appear, then something might have happened to them. This is a kind of a foresight into the future. And it is a normal occurrence.

Well, minutes after Sir John’s passing away came in, I stumbled upon a Twitter post by a Twitter user called Tutankhamun. He had coincidentally posted a video of Sir John in an interview with Delay. He was reminiscing how much he had missed seeing him on screen.

Just a day after this post, Sir John was reported dead. This has got myself and other people wondering. Could he have foreseen his death? Obviously, this was a sort of a final tribute to him. But was he aware that the man he posted was going to die in just 24 hours?

This has caused stir among people.

Even if it was coincidental, perhaps it was a greater being telling us of what lay ahead. If only we deciphered the clue earlier.

Rest in peace, Sir John. You have served well.

  • Fidelitys balance sheet is one of the largest, strongest in Ghana Board Chair

Fidelity Bank Ghana is sufficiently capitalised, the Board Chair of the bank, Edward Effah, has said.

The bank recently held its 2020 Annual General Meeting (AGM) via a virtual platform for its shareholders to receive and adopt the reports of the directors, auditors and the financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2019.

At the meeting, the bank announced a 33% increase in profit before tax to GHS322 million for 2019, representing an “impressive growth” from the GHS242 million recorded in 2018.

Speaking at the virtual AGM, Mr Effah, stated that “2019 was a good year for Fidelity Bank, in spite of the uncertainties that characterised the financial services industry in Ghana”, adding: “Each of our three strategic business units Retail Banking, Corporate & Institutional Banking and Financial & Capital Markets registered significant growth during the year”.

“We would not have been able to record these financial achievements without the support of our customers and for that I thank all of our customers for contributing to our continued success”, Mr Effah added.

He further shared that: “Our balance sheet remains one of the largest and strongest in the country, as we closed the year with a balance sheet size of GHS10.48 billion, up from the 2018 asset balance of GHS 7.02 billion.”

Mr Effah also noted that: “The bank is sufficiently capitalised and will continue to execute our medium term strategy, while making the appropriate investments in our people, culture and technology to better serve our clients.”

In addition to presenting strong financial results, the bank addressed the impact of COVID-19 and its focus on protecting its employees, helping its customers and supporting national efforts to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The Managing Director of Fidelity Bank, Mr Julian Opuni, assured the shareholders that Fidelity Bank has thoroughly assessed the potential impact of the pandemic and has put in place measures to mitigate the risks to its operations and customers.

Fidelity Bank said it took a proactive approach that focused on serving its customers through an enhanced digital offering and serving the larger community through targeted financial contributions and strategic partnerships.

“It was important to provide the necessary support to our customers to alleviate the liquidity pressure exerted by the economic effects of COVID-19. Interest rate reductions, loan repayment holidays and loan restructuring were some of the key tools that we used to provide financial relief to our customers,” disclosed Mr Opuni.

In addition to the financial relief that the bank offered customers, Fidelity Bank was also concerned with the safety of its customers and employees. To that end, the bank provided every branch with hand washing stations, thermometers, safety materials, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), sanitisers and established other preventive measures to protect customers and employees.

At the national level, the bank partnered with the COVID-19 Private Sector Fund and supported the construction of the COVID-19 Infectious Disease and Isolation Facility with a donation of GHS1,000,000.

The bank also donated more than 3,000 PPE to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi and GHS30,000 worth of PPE to the Kumasi South Hospital.

“In the coming months, we will launch initiatives aimed at supporting various segments of the economy including SMEs, youth, and others. These projects reinforce our commitment to working together with our customers and the general public to achieve more through our collective efforts”, said Mr Opuni.

  • Some Harvey Weinstein accusers denounce $19m ‘sellout’ settlement

Two lawsuits against Harvey Weinstein are to be settled for a proposed $18.9m (£15.3m), the New York Attorney General has announced. The fund would be distributed between dozens of women who have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct.

However, lawyers representing six of the women who have accused the disgraced film producer have criticised the proposal as a “complete sellout”.

Weinstein is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence for rape.

    What is the new settlement?

The settlement, announced on Tuesday, would resolve a lawsuit filed in 2018 against Weinstein, his production company and his brother by the New York Attorney General’s office.

It would also settle a separate class-action lawsuit brought on behalf of women who accused Weinstein of sexual harassment or assault.

“After all the harassment, threats, and discrimination, these survivors are finally receiving some semblance of justice,” Attorney General Letitia James said.

“Women who were forced to sign confidentiality agreements will also be freed from those clauses and finally be able to speak.”

The proposed settlement will still require approval from a federal judge and bankruptcy court.

What has the response from accusers been?

Lawyers Douglas H Wigdor and Kevin Mintzer, who represent six accusers, criticised the proposed settlement because it did not require Weinstein to accept responsibility or personally pay out any money.

“The proposed settlement is a complete sellout of the Weinstein survivors and we are surprised that the attorney general could somehow boast about a proposal that fails on so many different levels,” they said.

“While we do not begrudge any survivor who truly wants to participate in this deal, as we understand the proposed agreement, it is deeply unfair for many reasons.”

However, another of Weinstein’s accusers, Louisette Geiss, said: “This important act of solidarity allowed us to use our collective voice to help those who had been silenced and to give back to the many, many survivors who lost their careers and more.

“There is no amount of money that can make up for this injustice, but I’m extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished today.”

In February, Weinstein was convicted in New York City of third-degree rape and first-degree criminal sexual act, and later sentenced to 23 years in jail.

  • Hong Kong: First arrests under ‘anti-protest’ law as handover marked

Hong Kong police have made their first arrests under a new “anti-protest” law imposed by Beijing, as crowds marked 23 years since the end of British rule.

Nine people were held accused of violating the law, including a man with a pro-independence flag. More than 300 others were detained at a banned rally.

The national security law targets secession, subversion and terrorism with punishments up to life in prison.

Activists say it erodes freedoms but China has dismissed the criticism.

Hong Kong’s sovereignty was handed back to China by Britain in 1997 and certain rights were supposed to be guaranteed for at least 50 years under the “one country, two systems” agreement.

The UK has now said up to three million Hong Kong residents will be offered the chance to settle in the UK and ultimately apply for citizenship.

Police used water cannon, tear gas and pepper spray on demonstrators. One officer was stabbed in the arm by “rioters holding sharp objects”, police said. The suspects fled and bystanders offered no help, they added.

One of the nine arrested under the new law, adopted in the wake of last year’s widespread unrest, was holding a “Hong Kong Independence” flag. However, some Twitter users said the picture appeared to show a small “no to” written in front of the slogan. The man has not been identified, and it was not clear whether he would be prosecuted.

The legislation has been condemned by numerous countries and human rights activists.

UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab called the measures a “flagrant assault” on freedoms of speech and protest.

The UK has also updated its travel advice on Hong Kong, saying there is an “increased risk of detention, and deportation for a non-permanent resident”.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said China had broken its promise to Hong Kong’s people.

But in Beijing, foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian urged countries to look at the situation objectively and said China would not allow foreign interference in its domestic affairs.

What does the new law say? Crimes of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces are punishable by a minimum sentence of three years, with the maximum being life. It also says:

Damaging public transport facilities – which often happened during the 2019 protests – can be considered terrorism Beijing will establish a new security office in Hong Kong, with its own law enforcement personnel – neither of which would come under the local authority’s jurisdiction Inciting hatred of China’s central government and Hong Kong’s regional government are now offences under Article 29 The law can also be broken from abroad by non-residents under Article 38, and this could mean that foreigners could be arrested on arrival in Hong Kong Some trials will be heard behind closed doors Beijing will also have power over how the law should be interpreted, and not any Hong Kong judicial or policy body. If the law conflicts with any Hong Kong law, the Beijing law takes priority.

Mr Zhang said the law would not be applied to offences committed before it was passed and that suspects arrested in Hong Kong on charges of violating the law may be tried on the mainland.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s pro-Beijing leader, said the law would “restore stability” and that it was “considered the most important development in relations between the central government and Hong Kong since the handover”.

  • Oklahoma woman shot while trying to remove Nazi flag

A US woman has been shot while trying to remove a Nazi flag from someone’s front yard in the state of Oklahoma.

Garfield County Sheriff’s office said the woman had been at a party nearby when she took one of two flags being flown outside Alexander Feaster’s home.

Mr Feaster, 44, then reportedly shot her in the back with a semi-automatic rifle as she ran away.

The 26-year-old woman is expected to recover from her injuries and Mr Feaster is being held in custody.

Sherriff Jody Helm said the woman was found lying in a ditch with four gunshot wounds after deputies responded to a call early on Sunday morning.

Sherriff Helm initially suggested the woman had tried to steal the swastika-emblazoned flag for a dare, but in an interview with NBC News she said there was “conflicting information” surrounding the woman’s motive.

An affidavit seen by NBC News says “several” cameras at Mr Feaster’s home show he fired on the woman “without warning”. A neighbour then moved a red pickup truck near the home to serve as a barricade, and a witness trained a rifle on the property as a precaution while waiting for deputies to arrive.

Mr Feaster was later taken into custody without incident. He has been charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon, and shooting with intent to kill, and is due to appear in court on 9 July.

A neighbour told local radio KFOR that he had been flying the flags for around a year, and they had been snatched from his home a few times in the past. They added that he would occasionally dress up in black uniform with a red swastika armband – an outfit reminiscent of Nazi SS uniforms. But he was said to mostly keep to himself.

Another woman and friend of the victim said there had been “no problems” with Mr Feaster before, but that his flags were a cause for concern.

“I feel like these flags are a disaster waiting to happen,” she told the Enid News and Eagle.

  • I was very broke when I returned from the states Okyeame Kwame

Kwame Nsiah-Apau, known by his stage name Okyeame Kwame and nicknamed Rap Doctor, has in an interview with Fiifi Pratt on Kingdom 101.9 FM, disclosed how broke he was when he returned to Ghana from the states three years after the Akyeame group shot to stardom.

The Ghanaian musician, songwriter, creative director, and entrepreneur in an exclusive interview on the Afro Joint show recounted his hay days with friend Okyeame Quophi in the band named Akyeame, their fall out and how their careers as solo artistes turned out.

The Rap Doctor who is the brain behind The Versatile Show known for stellar performances in music, magic, comedy, dance, drama, and poetry presentation spoke about the success of the last edition held in September 2019.

Away from that, he took listeners aback with the history behind the band Akyeame made up of himself and Daniel Quophi Amoateng popularly known as Okyeame Quophi.

The multiple award-winning veteran musician mentioned that the success of the band Akyeame could be attributed majorly to Mark Okraku Mantey and their London based financier Andrews Opoku Amankwaah.

He explained that even though they had their very first breakthrough when they performed at the Embassy Double Do through Pikus Laryea in 1996, it was the aforementioned personalities that propelled them to true stardom.

Okyeame Kwame expressed that the fallout between himself and longtime friend and bandmate Okyeame Quophi came after they returned to Ghana from a two-year stint working menial jobs in the States.

The rapper added that upon return to Ghana he was broke with only $1000 dollars in his account.

On the other hand, his friend and brother Quophi had landed a job with Fox FM courtesy their manager at the time Kwame Baah, and had lost his zeal for the music business because he was comfortable.

  • Messi scores 700th goal with Panenka against Atletico Madrid

Lionel Messi scored the 700th goal of his career with a Panenka penalty in Barcelona’s La Liga draw with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

The Spanish giants’ all-time top scorer hit the landmark goal for club and country by gently chipping the ball into the net as Jan Oblak dived the wrong way.

The goal had put Barcelona 2-1 up but Atletico hit back to draw 2-2.

Barca remain second, one point behind Real Madrid, who have a game in hand.

Messi’s penalty was also his 630th goal in his 724th appearance for the club.

The Argentina star played a part in the opener for Barcelona when his whipped corner hit Diego Costa and deflected into the back of the net.

Former Chelsea striker Costa quickly had the chance to make amends when Atletico were awarded a penalty after Yannick Carrasco was fouled inside the box.

Costa stepped up to take the spot kick only to see it saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but it had to be retaken because the Barcelona goalkeeper had come off his line early. Saul Niguez took the second penalty and sent Ter Stegen the wrong way.

Messi restored Barcelona’s lead and reached his career milestone with his cheeky Panenka – named after Antonin Panenka’s famous penalty for Czechoslovakia in the final of the 1976 European Championship – but Niguez equalised again with another penalty as Barca dropped points which could cost them dear in the title race.

    Messi joins 700 club

Another year, another milestone for Messi.

His 700th career goal – coming just over 14 months after netting for the 600th time for Barcelona – means he joins a select group.

According to data from Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation, Messi is now one of seven players to have reached the 700-goal mark in their career.

Czech-Austrian Josef Bican leads the way with 805 career goals, followed by Brazil legend Romario, who bagged 772, with his compatriot Pele third on 767.

Hungary legend Ferenc Puskas hit 746 goals, while former Germany striker Gerd Muller rounds out the top five with 735 goals.

Messi’s great modern goalscoring rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, is the sixth man on the list, having reached 700 career goals with a strike for Portugal in a Euro 2020 qualifier against Ukraine in October last year. He has added a further 26 goals to his tally since then.

  • China hit by new “flu virus”; experts say it could be become a pandemic

A new strain of flu that has the potential to become a pandemic has been identified in China by scientists.

It emerged recently and is carried by pigs, but can infect humans, they say.

The researchers are concerned that it could mutate further so that it can spread easily from person to person, and trigger a global outbreak.

While it is not an immediate problem, they say, it has “all the hallmarks” of being highly adapted to infect humans and needs close monitoring.

As it’s new, people could have little or no immunity to the virus.

The scientists write in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that measures to control the virus in pigs, and the close monitoring of swine industry workers, should be swiftly implemented.

Media captionScientists believe another pandemic will happen during our lifetime

    Pandemic threat

A bad new strain of influenza is among the top disease threats that experts are watching for, even as the world attempts to bring to an end the current coronavirus pandemic.

The last pandemic flu the world encountered – the swine flu outbreak of 2009 – was less deadly than initially feared, largely because many older people had some immunity to it, probably because of its similarity to other flu viruses that had circulated years before.

That virus, called A/H1N1pdm09, is now covered by the annual flu vaccine to make sure people are protected.

The new flu strain that has been identified in China is similar to 2009 swine flu, but with some new changes.

Media captionSearching for viruses in Thai bats – watch scientists collect samples from the animals in order to look for clues about coronaviruses

So far, it hasn’t posed a big threat, but Prof Kin-Chow Chang and colleagues who have been studying it, say it is one to keep an eye on.

    How worried should we be?

The virus, which the researchers call G4 EA H1N1, can grow and multiply in the cells that line the human airways.

They found evidence of recent infection in people who worked in abattoirs and the swine industry in China when they looked at data from 2011 to 2018.

Current flu vaccines do not appear to protect against it, although they could be adapted to do so if needed.

Prof Kin-Chow Chang, who works at Nottingham University in the UK, told the BBC: “Right now we are distracted with coronavirus and rightly so. But we must not lose sight of potentially dangerous new viruses.”

While this new virus is not an immediate problem, he says: “We should not ignore it.”

In theory, a flu pandemic could occur at any time, but they are still rare events. Pandemics happen if a new strain emerges that can easily spread from person to person.

Although flu viruses are constantly changing – which is why the flu vaccine also needs to change regularly to keep up – they do not usually go pandemic.

Prof James Wood, head of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge, said the work “comes as a salutary reminder” that we are constantly at risk of new emergence of pathogens, and that farmed animals, with which humans have greater contact than with wildlife, may act as the source for important pandemic viruses.

A World Health Organization spokeswoman said: “Eurasian avian-like swine influenza virus are known to be circulating in the swine population in Asia and to be able to infect humans sporadically. Twice a year during the influenza vaccine composition meetings, all information on the viruses is reviewed and the need for new candidate vaccine viruses is discussed. We will carefully read the paper to understand what is new.

“It also highlights that we cannot let down our guard on influenza; we need to be vigilant and continue surveillance even during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

  • Business community calls for intensive fight against coronavirus

Experts in business, education, health and international relations have called on countries to cooperate in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

They said to confront the ravages of COVID-19, countries needed to tackle the virus strategically en masse and forge synergies in the collective fight against the global pandemic.

This was in a statement issued at the end of a week-long International Digital Summit with representation from Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Wednesday.

It said discussions focused on what countries were experiencing as a result of the pandemic and the need to protect citizens in the current situation and future outbreaks.

The virtual summit laid out recommendations to shape the new norm as it had brought unplanned and unpredictable change in global economic, political and social spheres.

It underscored the need for constructive international cooperation as the best way out of the crisis.

The statement said the pandemic had exposed the contradictions of the modern world and that cooperation was the best way forward to help in achieving balance through information sharing, best practices, and cooperation.

Touching on sustainable development, the statement called on countries to actively promote energy efficiency and conservation by adopting a multi-pronged approach to development, including the adoption of new technologies and innovations.

  • The future of learning hack kickstarts on July 1

The Future of Learning Hack is an Ashesi Design Lab initiative which seeks to enable individuals to leverage their design thinking and innovative abilities in addressing the challenges associated with online examination.

It is set to begin on the 1st of July and end on the 14th of July 2020.

In this 2-Week program, participants will explore ideas and come up with solutions to the problems of online examination.

While COVID-19 has caused great distress in the educational sector, many top Ghanaian universities have responded well to the situation by employing an online approach to teaching and learning.

This virtual approach to education is indeed a timely one. But if you once ran out of data in the middle of an exam, or perhaps delayed in submitting documents due to slow internet, then you would know there are some setbacks with the system.

In light of this, the Ashesi Design Lab wishes to give every problem-solver out there a chance to resolve some of these current educational problems through its Future Learning Hack.

  • Sanitising the retail market: Committee on foreigners in retail trade assesses shop owners

Foreigner owners of shops in the Greater Accra Region which have been locked-up shops have been asked to avail themselves and justify why their shops should be opened.

This comes after a committee was set up to sanitise the Ghanaian retail market following agitation and closure of the shops in December last year.

The Committee started implementing its recommendations at the Tip-toe Lane in Accra on Wednesday.

In December 2019 when the shops were put under lock and key, owners were barred from opening the controversial businesses at least not until Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has reversed its decision.

Members of the task force have been spotted unlocking special locks inscribed, “GUTA” that was earlier fixed to shops suspected to be owned by foreigners.

Speaking to JoyNews at Circle Alajo station, a member of the Committee, Maxwell Apenkro said the exercise is “aimed at sanitising the retail market more especially within Circle”

He added that the three-day operation is a follow-up to what started in December when GUTA carried out a threat by locking down some shops in the central business district.

Per the GIPC law, foreigners are not allowed to operate within certain quarters of the retail space in Ghana, a law which has over the years being breached with impunity by foreigners.

  • Voters registration exercise: 2 NDC executives beaten to pulp by thugs at Atebubu

Two constituency executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Atebubu-Amantin constituency in the Bono East region have been beaten to pulp.

The pair, Mr. Nando Francis, the Constituency Secretary, and the Constituency Organizer, Mr. Yusif Alhassan were allegedly attacked and beaten mercilessly by some thugs at one of the polling stations.

Whilst Nando Francis fractured his left leg, Yusif Alhassan sustained bruises on his arms, face, and legs.

GhanaWeb sources reveal that the incident happened at the Presby Church polling station during day two of the on-going voters registration exercise.

The NDC Bono East Regional Organizer, Prince Opoku told GhanaWeb in an exclusive interview that the two executives who were part of the local monitory team were attacked by thugs suspected to be members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He alleged that the act was targeted as the two executives did not in any way provoke the said persons.

“ An incident happened at the polling station and before we could say jack the thugs affiliated to the ruling government pounced on the two executives and beat them to pulp. As I speak they are at the Ejura Government Hospital receiving treatment.”

When this portal contacted the Atebubu Municipal Commander, Superintendent Bright Boafo Kwabena on the issue he declined to comment on the matter as he revealed that the issue has not been brought to his attention.

Meanwhile, independent checks by Ghanaweb reveal that the case has been reported at the Atebubu police station.

  • Nursing mothers expose their children to danger at registration centres

Nursing mothers who carry their babies to the voter registration centres without any form of protection, are exposing their children to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, chairman of the Afigya-Kwabre South constituency who made the observation, said it was sad to see nursing mothers in the queues wearing nose masks, but having their babies without any form of protection.

He said if care was not taken, more children would be infected by the virus after the exercise.

Odeneho Appiah, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Kodie after touring some registration centres in the constituency, said it would be important for nursing mothers to either leave their children in the house and go to register or find appropriate protection for them at the registration centres.

He said children were more vulnerable and exposing them in overcrowded areas could be dangerous, especially, where people were refusing to observe social distancing in the registration centres.

Odeneho Appiah commended the Electoral Commission (EC) for instituting appropriate measures at the various registration centres to ensure the safety of registrants.

He, however, said it would be very helpful if the EC would give nursing mothers a priority in the registration centres to enable them to leave the centres early to avoid endangering their babies.

Odeneho Appiah also appealed to the people to adhere strictly to all the preventive protocols at the centres to stay safe after the registration exercise.

Voter registration is currently underway in 14 centres in Afigya-Kwabre South constituency in the first phase of the exercise being conducted by the EC to provide identity cards of voters in the upcoming December general elections.

  • Cocoa farmers in Nsuapemso receive training

Cocoa farmers in some communities in the Fanteakwa South District have received training in alternative livelihood empowerment programmes to generate additional incomes.

The training programme was organized by the General Agricultural Workers’ Union (GAWU) of Trades Union Congress (TUC) as part of efforts to build the capacities of cocoa farmers in income generating ventures to enable them generate other incomes outside cocoa production to sustain themselves and their families.

The Union is also encouraging Cocoa growing communities to form Community Anti Child Labour Mentoring Committees to ensure that children are prevented from engaging in all forms of hazardous activities, especially in cocoa farms.

Mr Andrews Addoquaye Tagoe, Deputy General Secretary of GAWU speaking at the inauguration of an Anti- Child Labour Committee at Nsuapemso in the Fanteakwa South District, said the livelihood empowerment training programmes were aimed at promoting decent work and improving the incomes of cocoa farmers.

Additionally, the Community Anti-Child Labour Mentoring Committee would ensure that cocoa growing communities were free from child labour and that cocoa was not produced from the sweat of children.

He mentioned some of the communities benefiting from the project as Tontro in the Abuakwa North District, Lolobi-Ashanbi, and Kpando-Torkor in the Volta region.

The cocoa farmers were trained in mushroom farming, snail rearing and the use of cocoa husks and pods to produce ‘Alata Semina’.

Mr. Tagoe advised the farmers to form Farmer Cooperatives and Local Unions in order to have access to and benefit from the services of the Union as well as inputs supplies, education and advocacy campaigns being organized by the COCOBOD and other agencies.

Ms Adelaide Achiaa Afrifa, Agricultural Extension Officer at Tontro, urged all farmers to join the local cooperatives and groups to benefit from training and educational programmes, while protecting their children from harmful work which could affect their health and education.

Nana Baafour Kwabena Alerti 11, Chief of Nsuapemso declared his community a Child Labour Free Zone and warned that any farmer found engaging his children in hazardous farming activities would be prosecuted.

Mr. Jackson Tei Kwame, a farmer, called for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in child protection policies and programmes.

Ms. Gifty Ampofo, a 14-year-old JHS student of Afi Memorial School, who was rescued from Child labour, said she was now happy that she could attend school peacefully to become a responsible person in future.

  • Sacked Adiembra SHS students to be recalled Headmistress

Stakeholders of the Adiembra Senior High School in Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis in the Western Region after a meeting have agreed that the 16 sacked students should be recalled with their parents and be made to sign an undertaking for good behaviour in order to complete their session.

Rev. Mrs. Elizabeth Akuoku, Metro Director of Education who made this known exclusively to GhanaWeb on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, explained that some students after reporting to the school went out but were cautioned because it was their first offence since reporting to school.

The whole school was, therefore, cautioned against going out following the safety measures to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic while in school.

However, some students later went to the rails despite the earlier caution and so some teachers were dispatched to go and return them but the students fled upon seeing the teachers.

She said a roll call was then conducted after the morning prep and again in the afternoon so it was realised that some recalcitrant students had not returned to school.

Against this backdrop, they were sacked later and while on their way, they met some reporters and told a lie.

She debunked the assertion that students have not had access to potable water since reopening, hence their decision to fetch some at a standing pipe located a few metres from campus and queried, “why were they standing on the streets with their belongings instead of buckets if indeed they were going to fetch water as they claimed?”

Rev. Mrs Akuoku stated explicitly that no female student has been allowed to go outside the campus for water and other necessities as purported.

She, therefore, assured parents of the safety of their wards while on campus and called on them to advise their wards to be obedient to all the precautionary measures and all the facilities provided for a mutual benefit.

Sources said before the President announced the indefinite closure of all schools on Monday, March 16, as part of the COVID-19 containment measures, they had received twenty of the Veronica buckets and later had forty from the Government.

On the issue of accommodation, the school has a dormitory capacity of 900 but expects to receive about 1,498 of Form 2 Gold Track and final year students.

However, due to the accommodation deficit, some classrooms have been converted into dormitories to augment the existing ones so as to meet the required social distancing protocol.

Meanwhile, a dormitory has a maximum of 36 students now in a room with the ICT Block also being assigned as a holding centre should one show any symptoms of the disease while the taps were flowing with water.

Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis leads in Coronavirus positive cases in the Western Region with over 500 cases.

  • Its an offence to share Akuapem Poloos nude picture – Gender Minister

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection has condemned actress Rosemond Brown, known in showbiz as Akuapem Poloo, for a nude picture she shared on social media.

Akuapem Poloo had posted a picture of herself naked in front of her son, who was in briefs, to mark his seventh birthday on Tuesday, June 30.

But the image received wide condemnation from the public with many ascribing child abuse to it.

Akuapem Poloo has since rendered an apology for the act and removed the picture from her page.

However, Gender Minister Cynthia Mamle Morrison says her sector “is liaising with the appropriate agencies to deal with the issue”.

“The Ministry wishes to reiterate that the posting of nude pictures on social media at all times is a serious offence and all must desist from the act,” a statement issued by Madam Morrison on Wednesday, July 1 warned.

  • Just keep quiet and obey the Supreme Court ruling – Kokofu to NDC

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Iron and Steel Development Company, Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu has warned members of the NDC to keep quiet now that the Supreme Court has ruled over their case against the Electoral Commission on the new voters’ registration exercise.

He said members of the NDC must stay mute since they’re participating in the
    registration exercise.

However, he said they can also decide to refrain from it.

During a panel discussion on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ political discussion show, the former Bantama MP asked members of the opposition NDC to note in their dictionaries that, “nothing can save them from losing the 2020 elections, therefore they should calm themselves down and follow the processes laid by government”.

He reiterated that the first gentleman of the land, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and members of his administration will never have the intention of preventing qualified voters from exercising their franchise.

Supreme Court unanimously dismisses NDC’s case

The Supreme Court has unanimously dismissed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) case against the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters register for the 2020 general elections

The 7-member panel presided over by Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, in its decision held that the EC is an independent body and will only be directed by the court if it acts contrary to law.

The seven-member panel that heard the case included Justices Jones Dotse, Paul Baffoe Bonnie, Sule Gbagegbe, Samuel K. Marful-Sau, Nene Amegatcher, and Professor Ashie Kotey.

It would be recalled that two groups, the opposition NDC and a Private citizen Mark Takyi-Banson filed the case asking the apex court to stop the EC from compiling the register or allow the use of the birth certificate and voters ID card by prospective voters as proof of identification.

  • Go and disgrace yourself again Alhaji Grunsah to Kotoko, Ashgold

Owner of Kumasi King Faisal Alhaji Karim Grunsah has thrown a subtle jab at Asante Kotoko and Ashantigold SC.

The outspoken football administrator on Kumasi FM during an interview warned the Ashanti Region-based clubs about their supposed participation in the inter-club competition organised by CAF after the Ghana FA cancelled the 2019 20 season due to the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus pandemic.

“Allow them to go and disgrace themselves. They represented the country during the era of the Normalization committee but brought nothing better but shame to the country because of their shambolic performances”, he stated.

The experienced football administrator acknowledged the fact that no one can prevent the Porcupines and the Miners from partaking in the next edition of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup but warned the clubs to be very vigilant because some management members will use the chance to dupe the club.

“No one can seize them from participating once they have their money but they should be mindful especially with their gate proceeds, some management members capitalize on that to dupe the club”, he advised.

He retorted that, though he disagrees with the clubs intention to participate in Africa Club Competition this term, he also believes it would be better to give it a shot since CAF have slots for Ghanaian clubs in the tournament.

“Nonetheless, I think we cannot waste our slot hence they can keep on trying. It may be better for them someday”, he concluded.

  • Volta GJA allots land to members

The Volta Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has given out building plots of its Volta Media Village at Adaklu Tsrefe to members.

A total of 18 and a half plots of the land, which was donated to the Association by the Adaklu-Tsrefe community, was allotted to members, who had paid the required token.

Mr. Roland Affail Monney, President of the GJA, said the development was a “very good news” as the reality of acquiring an estate land for members was “like a distant dream”, a few months ago.

He said despite wholesome service to the country, journalists found themselves among classes of humans, who missed their dreams of owning their own home, and called for a “reorientation on serving the nation.”

“Housing remains a critical issue and an indispensable human need that had eluded most journalists despite the holistic service to the country.”

He said, “Lots of journalists are sentenced to a life of destitution after toiling to feed the nation with information, and am grateful Volta GJA has taken the initiative to cure this disease.”

“Journalists work because of love for the nation and are not like others who use the opportunity to milk the nation. There is the need for us to strike a strong balance between serving the nation and our selves and make provisions for our basic needs like housing,” Mr Monney stated.

He celebrated Volta GJA, and the community of Adaklu Tsrefe for their generosity, saying, “What we see, speaks volumes of what Volta GJA has done and it is evidence of the kind of good leadership and good followership that exists.”

Mr Anthony Bells Kafui Kanyi, Volta Regional Chairman of the Association said the development had failed to attract an investor, prompting the plots to be given out to individual members.

He said beneficiaries could erect approved structures of any kind but must be draped in the colours of the GJA.

The village sits on a four-acre land and has a playing field for social events.

The Association has also secured land at Adaklu Kodzobi, which would soon be made available to members.

  • Expensive electricity bills to continue in Kenya for 15 more years

Official contracts have tied consumers to high electricity bills linked to thermal generation for up to another 15 years, records show.

A listing of the active diesel-run power generators shows that the longest power purchase agreement runs till 2035, leaving consumers with a longer wait before the expensive energy sources end. The Energy ministry last year began shedding the diesel-run power generation units by letting their contracts expire to reduce the burden on consumers.

Data from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) show that there are eight thermal power plants with a combined installed capacity of 660.82 megawatts supplying the national grid.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter said the option of waiting for the expiry of the production agreements would be the easiest as terminating them early would be costly.

“We are slowly retiring them by not renewing licences when contracts expire. This is based on our grid analysis, which show that technically, they can be decommissioned without negative impacts to the quality and security of supply of electricity,” Mr Keter said. The Epra list shows that the Triumph Power Generating Company was the latest company to be signed for thermal power supply in July 2015.

The firm’s 83MW plant has a 20-year contract expiring in February 2035. Others like Coast-based Gulf Energy with 80MW and Thika Power with 90MW will expire in 2034.

Switching off thermal plants is part of the government’s gradual phase-out plan of expensive diesel power generators as it moves to provide cheaper and cleaner energy.

Last year, Iberafrica’s 54MW thermal plant was dropped off the grid after 15 years with the expiry of its power purchase agreement.

The use of thermal power has been blamed for keeping Kenya’s electricity relatively expensive compared to countries like Egypt which largely uses hydro sources retailing at Sh3.23 per kilowatt-hour (unit) on average compared to thermal’s Sh18 per unit.

  • Coronavirus: Three-quarters of Nigerians at risk of non-communicable diseases – Report

A new study has shown that three-quarters of the 200 million Nigerians are at risk of Non-Communicable Diseases, NCDs, amidst coronavirus pandemic.

The study also found that men are more at risk than women.

The year-long study which commenced in 2019, by WellNewMe in collaboration with Novartis was aimed at determining Nigerians risks for developing chronic diseases as part of the disease activities for World Hypertension Day.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), people with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, or cancer are at higher risk of complications of COVID-19.

The result of the study released weekend revealed that a total of 1,900 people were enrolled for the pilot, and 1,269 of them completed the assessment as part of the pilot.

The participants were drawn from different parts of Nigeria including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, which majority of them coming from Lagos 30 percent, Oyo 8 percent, Abuja FCT 8 percent, Ogun 7 percent, and Rivers 5 percent.

Three-quarters of those who completed the assessment were found to have an increased risk of developing a chronic disease.

It was also found that risk increases as the age increases, while all of those aged 50 and above have an increased risk.

The results also showed that 43 percent of women seem more at risk than 36 percent of men for developing hypertension, while the risk increases as the age of the pilot enrolee increased.

With diabetes, it was found that almost three-quarters of those assessed had an increased risk of having diabetes with 10 percent having a high risk while men were more at risk than women. The diabetes risk also increases as the age of the pilot enrolee increases.

Some of the other interesting anecdotes from the pilot revealed that men were four times more likely to be at risk for developing the cardiac disease, and in Rivers, 85 percent of the adults assessed had an increased risk for developing chronic disease.

Commenting on the study, Co-founder of WellNewMe and author of the pilot report, Dr Obi Igbokwe, said: “report of the pilot, while not extensive does lends importance to considerations by the Nigerian health authorities when designing the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, that they need factor in NCDs as well.”

Igbokwe further explained that “As patients with chronic diseases are at greater risk of the coronavirus, that in itself presents an extra burden on our already struggling health services across the country. It is also of great importance, that even when the pandemic has passed, we will still have to deal with the burden of tackling these chronic diseases which by all accounts are here to stay.”

Meanwhile, WellNewMe has designed an algorithm-based health risk assessment platform that encompasses psychological, physical, and social domains that are known to influence NCD risk and prognosis in cases of established disease.

Being a global leader in the cardiovascular healthcare space, Novartis is mobilizing the setup of these cardiovascular risk assessment stations at various pharmacies across the country with the aim of reaching a thousand patients.

The platform incorporates the ability for healthcare providers (HCPs) to standardize their approach to cardiovascular disease management by using an algorithmic process and harnessing relevant data to ensure a set of potential outputs that result in better outcomes for the patient.

WHO Regional Director for Europe, Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge had also said that the prevention and control of NCDs have a crucial role in the COVID-19 response and if not adapted to encompass prevention and management of NCD risks, countries will fail many people at a time when their vulnerability is heightened.

  • Zimbabwean mother, son fight for church president’s position

The widow of late top local church founder Cuthbert Tafundikira Makoni, Leddie Makoni, and her son Collin Zondai Makoni are involved in a bitter fight over the church’s presidency.

The mother, Leddie has since approached the High Court seeking a declaratur that she is the rightful leader of the church according to the constitution of Christ Ministries Church.

She wants her son, Collin to be stopped from creating confusion in the church and interfering with the church’s business.

Christ Ministries Church was cited as the first applicant in the court application while Leddie is the second applicant.

She complained her son had developed the habit of scandalising her in a bid to win favours from church members.

Collin, Moses Ruvetsa, and the Registrar of Marriages were cited as first, second and third respondents, respectively.

According to the court application, the church solemnises civil marriages in terms of the Marriage Act (Chapter 5:11) and is required by law to submit a copy of its constitution to the Registrar of Marriages.

However, according to Leddie’s affidavit, her son is influencing the Marriages Registrar not to entertain her.

She said she founded the Christ Ministries Church with her late husband with the now-deceased being the founding president.

On April 4, 1992, a special meeting of the church’s assembly adopted a constitution for the church and in terms of that constitution, the church is a corporate body, separate and distinct from its members.

Leddie said prior to his death, her husband on October 6, 2014, executed his last will and testament.

“In his will, my late husband appointed me to succeed him as president. This puts the succession issue beyond debate. I was appointed as the successor to Rev C T Makoni before his death in accordance with clause 6(a) of the Constitution,” she says in her court papers.

“Accordingly, my exercise of presidential powers is lawful and constitutional. I have a clear right to the presidency and I respectfully request this court to grant me a declaration to this effect.”

She said Collin does not recognise her as the president of the church.

Collin has also instructed his guards to bar Leddie from visiting the church office insisting the religious institution had no leader yet since the death of his father.

“The dispute arises from the conduct of the first respondent who is my second child,” Leddie said.

“He refuses to recognise my appointment as president and has issued endless correspondence to members of the church in which he scandalises me and other senior members of the church. His conduct is causing unnecessary instability within the church.”

Leddie further accused her son of getting support from Ruvetsa who claims to be head of denomination adding Ruvetsa was writing letters to the Registrar of Marriages instructing him to reject the church’s 1992 constitution.

She said Ruvetsa continues to cause havoc despite that he is based in the United Kingdom where he has started his own church known as Maranatha Assemblies of God.

Leddie said her son’s conduct can only be stopped by a court interdict.

The case is yet to be set down for hearing.

Nettey who signed for the Phobians at the start of the now-cancelled 2019/2020 Ghana Premier League was tipped by former Hearts of Oak captain Esme Papa Mends as the next Michael Essien due to his incredible display when on the pitch.

Emmanuel Nettey, however in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Perez Erzoah Kwaw on Sports Check said adding Essien’s qualities to his game can make him greater than the latter.

“Michael Essien and Esme Mends are both my idols but I’m Emmanuel Nettey and I’m unique in my own way. The tags are going to come, he is Michael Essien, one of the biggest stars in Ghana.”

“I’m very happy to be tagged around him but I have my own style of play and I just need to take the positives from Essien’s game and I think I can even be bigger better than him if I add it to my game.”

Nettey also labelled Hearts of Oak defender Robert Addo Sowah as his best friend in the current Phobian team.

“I will say Robert Addo because I played with him at Pure Joy FC before I left so I already had that relationship with him before joining Hearts of Oak and he is more like a brother to me.” Emmanuel Nettey told GhanaWeb’s Sports Check.

  • I’ll lead a petition to CID for Afia Schwarzenegger to be arrested – Maurice Ampaw

Whiles, there are calls for the Criminal Investigation Department to issue an arrest of popular Ghanaian actress Rosemond Alade Brown aka Akuapem Poloo, legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw is calling for the arrest of Afia Schwarzenegger.

Akuapem Poloo has been heavily criticized for posting a nude photo of herself and her son to mark the child’s 7th birthday. Though she has since deleted the photos from the internet, many Ghanaians say the deletion of the photo should not be the end of the matter.

Commenting on the issue with GhanaWeb, the controversial legal practitioner says, the law should also deal with comedian Afia Schwarzenegger for the same offence.

“There’s also a video of Afia Schwarzenegger going naked and that one, nobody is talking about that. That one too is obscene. That one too violates section 180.”

Explaining the gravity of the comedienne’s offence, he said, she did not only promote nudity on her social media platforms but she erred by using a gospel song.

That he adds, is something the Christian Council must condemn.

“Afia’s own is even worse. She’s using gospel music to promote nudity. And the Christian community is quiet. GhanaWeb should applaud the Muslim community, do you think Afia Schwarzenegger can use an Islamic song to promote nudity? She will be in trouble. But look at the way, the Christians have relaxed? And nobody is talking, the Christian council and all the religious bodies are quiet. You can’t use God’s song to promote nudity.”

Mr. Ampaw added it is a criminal act for Afia Schwarzenegger to show her naked body in the presence of her children; adding it is time the law protects Ghanaian children.

“So Schwarzenegger’s act is not pardonable, she should also be arrested. Some of us will take the steps, we will petition the director of CID to go after her, because Afia and Poloo, there’s no difference. They are all promoting nudity and violating the laws of the land. Our children’s interests are at stake, we need to protect our children from domestic violence.

This is violence against our children because you are exposing our children to sexual violence. We are spoiling and debasing the children and we need to protect them,” he told GhanaWeb.

  • Voters registration: Guarantors will not be desenfranchised; EC clarifies

The Electoral Commission (EC) has denied the allegation that individuals who guarantee for 10 people will be disenfranchised.

The Commission in a press statement signed and issued by the Acting Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Sylvia Annor said persons who guarantee for more than 10 people are the ones who will be prosecuted as it was going to reflect in the system.

“However, any individual who guarantees for more than ten persons will be picked up by our system and prosecuted”, the statement emphasised.

The statement comes after an audio that was circulating on social media suggested that persons who guarantee for up to ten people “will not be verified on election day”.

A man who gave his name as Mckenzie in the audio was heard saying “When you guarantee for ten people, the system will not verify you on election day. Please take note, the system will not verify you on election day so, even within the NPP the information really credible is that they are guaranteeing for only eight people.”

But the EC in reaction has urged the public to disregard the information because it is not rooted in the Constitutional Instrument (C.I). which states that guarantors can guarantee for up to ten people.

“We call on the general public to be circumspect and disregard false information which is not rooted in our Laws and C.I.’s, the Commission urged.

There was a disagreement between the party in power, New Patriotic Party (NPP) and opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of whether or not the use of the existing voters’ ID Card should be allowed in the new registration.
