  • Poor drainage identified as main cause of Accra floods

The current increase in flooding events in Accra is partly attributed to poor drainage caused by the lack of or inadequate infrastructure.

This is compounded by the underperformance of the few existing drains due to blockages from plastic waste and rubbish in gutters, a policy brief on flooding on some five Municipalities in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area said.

It, therefore, suggested the integration of infrastructure and ecosystem-based solutions to effectively manage flood in the city.

The brief also recommended the need for the Authorities to prioritise nature-based solutions in developing and implementing climate change policymaking, as ecosystem-based adaptation often yielded higher net benefits than conventional options.

It said afforestation, for example, can provide greater overall benefits by improving livelihoods and providing other social and economic benefits when trees of economic value were planted.

The policy brief is the outcome of a panel discussion on flooding in Accra and how nature-based solutions can be used to resolve the problem.

It was organized by the country lead of Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) in collaboration with five municipalities, namely, Ga East, Ga Central, Adentan, Nkwantanang Medina and Kpone Katamanso Municipalities.

The report also identified other factors including urban sprawl, which is leading to unplanned and unserved communities; construction in wetland areas; and the increased use of impermeable hard surfaces; all of which limit natural drainage.

“Lastly, an increase in extreme weather events as a result of climate change has resulted in more intense rainfall,” it said, adding “there is, therefore, a clear need for the various municipal and district assemblies to better understand and effectively manage existing and future risks, and to liaise with other stakeholders to devise a roadmap on how to effectively manage flooding”.

The report noted that ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) approach could be used in finding a solution to the recurring flooding problems in Accra.

EbA is a nature-based approach that uses biodiversity or ecosystem services to help people adapt to the adverse effects of climate change.

An example is the practice of restoring a wetland habitat within a catchment area. Wetlands contribute to flood attenuation by storing water and absorbing excess flow from rivers or other water bodies that overflow, it added.

That, it said, assist with erosion control, which could decrease the silting up of waterways, while recharging groundwater. Wetland plants are particularly good at controlling erosion by reducing stream energy and stabilising soil, allowing for better recovery of these systems after a damaging flood event.

The report said one such plant is vetiver grass, which helps to control erosion by forming a simple vegetative barrier (a hedge) made up of upright, rigid, dense and deeply-rooted clump grass that slows runoff, allowing sediments to stay on-site and eventually form terraces.

It noted that implementing effective drainage systems, including mapping natural drainage sites in municipalities and protecting them from development was crucial for solving flood issues in most municipal and district assemblies in Accra.

“Strictly enforcing building laws to avoid building on waterways and in wetlands, Municipal and District Assemblies coming together and collaborating to find solutions to flooding in their areas as well as facilitating the sharing of lessons among municipal and district assemblies is also necessary,” it added.

  • Police pick up two over unregistered coronavirus herbal medicines

The Police, with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), has arrested two persons and seized 431 bottles of two unregistered herbal medicinal products, purported to treat COVID-19, from them.

The two: Dr Abdellah, Director of Dr Abdellah Herbal Home and his Research Assistant Dr Abdul Samad Bin Musa, are now assisting the police in their investigations.

A Statement issued by the FDA and signed by Mrs Delese A.A. Darko, Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in Accra, said the two products seized by the Authority had been labelled “COVID Cure one and COVID Cure two”.

It said the products were manufactured by one Dr Abdellah Herbal Home at Kojo Ashong, a village near Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region.

Both products bear a forged FDA registered number FDB/TMPO3709 on them and have March 2020 and March 2021 as their manufacturing and expiry dates, respectively.

“This breaches Sections 113 (1) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851),” the statement said.

“A visit to the manufacturing premises reveals that the products were manufactured under unhygienic conditions, which is also in contravention with Section 115 (16) of the Public Health Act, 2012, (Act 851)”.

It said that the results of the laboratory analysis on the products conducted at the FDA’s ISO 17025-2017 accredited laboratory revealed that the products “do not meet the requirements of Total Aerobic Microbial Counts and Total Yeast and Moulds Count as per the British Pharmacopoeia Specification, which makes the products unsafe for use.”

The quality, safety and efficiency of these products cannot be guaranteed by the FDA since the products have not been registered by the Authority.

The FDA reiterated that: “It has not registered any product for the treatment or cure of COVID-19 and, therefore, cautions the general public against patronising such products.

Manufacturers, producers, distributors are to ensure that their products were duly approved before putting them on the markets, it cautioned.

The FDA assured the public of its continued protection of the public in terms of food, medicine, household chemicals and medicine devices.

“The general public is encouraged to report all concerns to the FDA on its social handles and phone numbers 0299802932, 0299802933 and 0206973065.”

  • Some JHS students, teachers complain over delay of PPEs in Western Region

Some Junior High School students and teachers in the Western Region have expressed their unhappiness over the delay of the delivery of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE’s) by the government.

All Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools in the country were asked to close down on March 16, 2020, in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic.

But, President Akufo-Addo three weeks ago directed these schools to resume learning activities on Monday, 29, 2020 to prepare the final year students to write their exit exams.

As a result, President Akufo-Addo promised to give three nose masks each to non-teaching and teaching staff; Veronica buckets, hand sanitizers, liquid soaps, thermometer guns, tissue papers among others to the schools.

GhanaWeb on Monday, June 29, visited some Junior High Schools in the Jomoro Municipality, Nzema East Municipality, Ellembelle District, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, and Ahanta West Municipality to monitor the resumption

    of basic schools.

It was revealed that none of the schools visited had been provided any PPEs. It was observed during the visit that some students and teachers were seen without face masks.

GhanaWeb also observed that some schools have managed to station some Veronica buckets at strategic places to be used by the students and teachers to wash their hands.

At one of the schools visited, final year students were asked to go home before 1 pm due to the unavailability of PPEs.

Speaking to some students on condition of anonymity, they said they were told that the government was going to give them nose masks so they came to school without one.

“We were told that government is going to give us nose masks so we didn’t ask our parents to buy some for us but when we got to the school the story was different. We are now afraid. We tried to go home and buy some but we were not allowed to go”, they expressed their grievances.

They, therefore, appealed to the government to speed up the process and provide them the nose masks and other preventive items.

Some teachers who also spoke on the condition of anonymity said the delay of the PPEs promised by the government has affected their activities.

“We are not safe so we are appealing to government to bring the items as soon as possible so that we can give it to our students and use some to protect ourselves,” they pleaded.

In a telephone conversation, the Western Regional Director of Education, Mr. Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the PPEs are yet to be received by the Regional Directorate for onward distribution as soon as possible.

  • Stakeholders resolve to end rice importation by 2023

Various stakeholders in the rice value chain have reiterated their commitment to end rice importation by 2023.

At a meeting organised by the John Agyekum Kufuor (JAK) Foundation, the stakeholders discussed ways to ensure local rice production becomes a sustainable venture.

The meeting brought together the Ghana Rice Inter-professional Body (GRIB), Ghana Commodity Exchange and the Ghana Standards Authority to discuss strategies on how to achieve the set target to guard against the importation practice.

Also in attendance were private sector groups who are going to work with Ghanaian farmers by providing them with harvesters and other logistical services.

Speaking on the sidelines after the opening session, President of GRIB, Nana Ayeh Adjei II disclosed that due to Covid-19, local rice farmers did not get the rice seeds on time, which might affect the volume of rice production this year.

However, he stated that the pandemic has not caused any major impact in the value chain, apart from the slow pace in retail sales.

He also disclosed that GRIB is expecting a mechanisation provider company before the end of the year to mop up paddy rice into warehouses to ease the issue of late harvesting.

He reiterated that Ghana had all it takes to achieve its set target of stopping rice importation.

He said the commitment to stop rice importation by Ghana motivated the assembling of various stakeholders to the forum to deliberate on strategies to achieve this target.

“It is all about Ghana must not import rice, so we brought all stakeholders together to increase local rice consumption that has already improved over the past months,” he stated.

He added that players in the private sector, being partners, are interacting among themselves to identify challenges affecting the sector from the rice farmer to the miller, a development which is helping the private sector to remove challenges.

According to him, the stakeholders, at the end of the meeting, were going to figure out how they would support the advocacy, production, processing and marketing issues in the rice value chain.

He also hinted that they were going to proffer solutions to how the rice value chain can be developed in the various regions to enable Ghana attain the sustainability in rice production and also improve the quality of rice grown in Ghana.

Nana Adjei further stated that discussions about ways to ensure local rice production become a sustainable venture, as well as plans on how all farmers in the various regions will grow quality rice, get good market outlets and prices for the farmers, were going to take place.

  • Say Goodbye before coming – Muntaka roars at strangers over registration at Asawase

The Member of Parliament for Asawase in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, Muntaka Muberak, has warned persons who are “not from Asawase”, not to even think of going there to register for eligibility to vote in the upcoming elections.

The clearly incensed legislator alleged that he had information that some people were going round other parts of Kumasi, taking names and telephone numbers from people they intend to bus to register at Asawase.

He therefore cautioned anyone who was planning or assisting others to plan and execute this strategy of the opposition to in their own interests and in the supreme interest of peace, desist from this course.

Alhaji Muntaka Muberak then fired that “anyone planning to go against his warning should say goodbye to his/her family before embarking on the journey because anything could happen and he could not guarantee that everything will be fine.

For persons who do not know much about the political terrain in Kumasi, this may sound nonsensical but hold on.

The Asawase constituency is a stronghold of the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party has been fighting to snatch the seat since the constituency was created without success.

It is therefore being alleged that should NPP get voters from other constituencies which are safe seats for the NPP anyway, their votes would shore up the figures of the NPP to beat the NDC. This would be a blow to Muntaka because the results of the 2016 elections in the constituency was too close for even the NDC to feel comfortable going into the 2020 elections.

The attention of authorities especially our security agencies should be drawn to the situation to avert any form of violence in the constituency. The Honourable MP should collaborate with the authority to have his grievances addressed.

Over 692,000 young people are set to benefit from the COVID-19 Recovery and Resilience Programme (CoRe)launched by the Springboard Road Show in partnership with the MasterCard Foundation and Solidaridad.

The programme, which seeks to support young people in the country in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, is designed to provide support through e-mentoring, e-counselling and e-coaching to equip them with relevant skills.

It will enable them to survive and thrive during and after the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participants were expected to be drawn from both the formal and informal sectors.

The CoRe programme, which will run from June to November, 2020, will provide support to the beneficiaries in areas such as; building resilience; health awareness; wellness and safety; building relevant workplace skills and job readiness in a post-pandemic era.

It will also involve weekly radio and online mentoring sessions in English and various Ghanaian languages and counseling for the beneficiaries.

Mrs Comfort Ocran, the Executive Director of the Springboard Road Show speaking at the virtual launch of the programme, said the programme was an extension of the work the Springboard Road Show Foundation was doing with young people through the Springboard Road Show and the Virtual University in the past 14 years.

She said the COVID-19 pandemic had made it imperative to have an intervention of this nature.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is probably the biggest disruption to our way of life in living history,” she said.

The Executive Director said the negative impact of the pandemic cut across social, cultural, psychological, economic, financial and every other aspect of human life, hence the need to introduce such a programme to support the young ones.

Ms Nathalie Akon Gabala, the Regional Director, West, Central and Northern Africa for MasterCard Foundation, said the Foundation was working on the continent for over a decade to increase access to education and financial services and in the wake of COVID-19, it was clear that it needed to step up its game on the continent to address the pandemic.

“Our aim is to create dignified work for young people and we have an objective of creating 30 million jobs for young women and young Africans over the next 10 years,” she said.

Mr Bossman Owusu, the Acting Country Director of Solidaridad, said the programme sought to provide counselling for young people to cope with the stress and anxiety brought by COVID-19.

“It gets to that point where we need to provide that counselling to help them to cope with the stress and anxiety brought by COVID-19. The programme, therefore, has the back of young people who have put in efforts to support agriculture”.

  • Aflao Paramount chief calls for re-demarcation of Ghana-Togo border

Paramount chief and President of the Aflao Traditional Council, Togbui Fiti V has called on Akufo-Addo to budget for an exercise to re-demarcate the border that exists between Ghana and Togo.

This, according to the chief will enable Ghanaians as a whole to have a deep insight into where exactly the land of Aflao extends.

Speaking to the media at his palace yesterday, June 29, 2020, the renowned traditional ruler stated that Aflao is big and therefore its indigenes should not be expected to be of a small number.

He further revealed to the pressmen that most of the residents in Aflao do not have water and therefore rely on or fetch water from neighboring towns which are in Togo.

He also stated that most of the foodstuff the people in Aflao eat are from Togo and therefore, the closure of the border has a big toll on the indigenes.

Togbui sounded a word of caution to the government saying that continues references to the people of the Volta Region as Togolese will result in something that no one wishes to see.

According to Togbui Fiti, there are more head potters which are popularly called “kayaye” in Aflao than Accra but they could not get any food packages from the government in this time that the Aflao border where they operate is closed. This he said was borne out of discrimination against people of the Volta Region.

Togbui Fiti, however, demanded the withdrawal of the soldiers from the town saying that the indigenes are hungry and angry as well and if they continue seeing guns that are been used to intimidate them, they will be forced to take the law into their own hands. The outcome the chief said will not be good.

After securing qualification, the two boxers are yet to receive their bonuses from government and are even struggling for meals as they prepare ahead of the Games.

Speaking in an interview with Odiasempa Kwame Oware on Wamputu Sports on Happy 98.9FM on the efforts made by the GOC to help the two athletes qualify for the Olympic Games the GOC president said,“Even when the boxers were to compete in the qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal it was the GOC that had to help them with their finance including their accommodation. We spent close to $20,000 to get the two boxers to qualify for the Olympic Games”.

“We were able to secure some funds from ANOCA to help our Federations during the qualifiers. That is not the work of the GOC. I want to make that clear. The duty of the national team is the responsibility of the government and the various federations.

He added: “other athletes in the other disciplines are also suffering and if they get to share their problems you will be amazed. Most of the other disciplines are neglected without any bonuses given to them when they participate in competitions”.

“Through the collaboration with YEA, the government is offering to help these individuals for a period of six months beginning from July this year. This is aimed at cushioning the Para athletes in these trying times.

  • ‘I don’t want to give heart attack to Ghanaians because its election year’- Anas

Investigative award winning journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has said that he doesn’t want to cause trouble for some politicians and Ghanaians at large in Ghana because its an election year and tensions are already high.

He made this disclosure in a one on one exclusive with CITI TV’s Bernard Avle on Point of View after the exposé was premiered on CITI TV at 9:00pm

Bernard Avle asked Anas why he didn’t do anything on politicians in 2020 since its an election year and corruption activities may be at a high.

Bernard said: “At least, it will help for people to be cautious.”

But Anas said doing something like that in this year may cause havoc and as usual will be a platform for an opposition to jump on.

He said: “We decided to go into the private sector this time because we like the atmosphere in the country.”

“We don’t want to cause fear and panic in the country. Further, its an election year and if we expose someone in a top position now, another is standing by to capitalise on that.”

“But although we have not done anything on politicians, we have enough if we want to expose one on them.”

The host then asked how that was possible because it took time for ‘Covid Qwacks’ to be even done, how much more on political activities.

Anas responded: “I am an investigative journalist, Bernard. We invest issues on almost everyday basis.”

“We do get calls that people suspect bad happenings at certain places and we go there and investigate so we can put together enough for the politician if we want to do something this year.”

Anas ended by revealing that part two of Covid-19 qwacks will be premeiered soon.

But before we go, lets tease small. This guy was a legend in the video. Vibes be what? Leave us a comment if you dey feel am,lol.

  • We will not tolerate the nonsense you are displaying – Afia Pokuaa ( Vim Lady) blasts politicians

View pictures in App save up to 80% data.Ghanaian journalist and presenter at despite media who is popularly known as Vim Lady due to how she analyses issues especially when it comes to political issues has addressed politicians in Ghana on a program dubbed ‘Gyaso gyaso’ by sharing her views on how some issues which is deem nonsense won’t be tolerated, due to the fear and panic is causing to the citizens of Ghana. She blasted Npp and NDC politicians over the tension they are creating in terms of the voters registration. According to her KT Hammond statement he made that Voltarians are not Ghanaians was not needed and wasn’t necessary to state, as a Minister he should have known the history of Ghana off head.

Although most Ghanaians have reacted and objected to this statement but it seems Npp and NDC politicians are causing tension around this statement and trying to create divisions among people in the country, meanwhile we are all one no matter the region the person comes from in Ghana. In this case there is the need for us to be united and focus on the development of the country instead of playing tantrums and focusing on unnecessary things. She stated how different tribes in Ghana have come together to be one by giving reference of the Past Presidents and their wives who are from different regions and tribes in the country. This evidence should prove to NDC and NPP that we are all one people she stated.

According to her there is the need to put an end to this tension and focus on other important matters since Covid-19 confirm cases and death cases keep on increasing. Some of the JHS students are lacking PPE’s since they reopen school. There is more work to be done in the country for the citizens rather creating tension and confusion in the country. Most Ghanaians depend on daily activities to feed themselves and as such both parties need to strategize on how to make the life of Ghanaians a better one.

She stated that most of these politicians would have left the country to other foreign countries if not Covid-19 pandemic, even with that most of them have their families outside the country and do not care about the lives of Ghanaians. Others have their wards schooling outside the country. In that case there is no need for creating fear and panic. That nonsense won’t be tolerated anymore since Ghana is the home for most Ghanaians. There is the need for peace and harmony for the citizens in the country especially in this year since is an election year.

NPP and NDC politicians should not always be thinking about how they are going to win their seats in parliament but also think about the citizens in the country she stated.

  • Fresh update: Franklin Cudjoe and others kick against sacking of Mr. Domelevo with tears

The President of the Republic of Ghana has given Ghanaians a special evening supper by directing Mr. Daniel Domelevo to proceed on 123 days’ vacation.

According to the Presidency, Mr. Domelevo consistently failed to go on his annual recess.

Furthermore, the Presidency says, Mr Domelevo has been ordered to turn over all relevant documents before he proceeds on leave.

“Has been further directed to hand over all matters relating to his office to Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, the Deputy Auditor-General to act as Auditor-General until his return”

The fast developing story has attracted the likes of Franklin Cudjoe, the president of IMANI Africa, the man noted for his convictions against graft.

According to Franklin Cudjoe, Mr. Domelevo saw those planning to crucify him ahead long ago.

“Domelevo saw it coming! And he didn’t care. The only last bastion of accountability has been decapitated. Political power is exceptional when it is expressed to hunt hunters. It just has a way of repeating urself. Perhaps in 2021” he said

Meanwhile, an appointee of the Elsewhere Mahama administration took the fight to Facebook.

He is by the name, Cassiel Ato Forson, a fine gentleman, says he has received news of the ultimatum addressed Auditor General Daniel Domelevo to proceed on vacation with tears.

According to Cassiel Ato Forson, never mind, this is the handy work of Akuffo Addo and Bawumia who hated Domelevo for exposing corruption in their regime.

“I have received news of the ultimatum given Auditor General Daniel Domelevo to proceed on leave with a lot of sadness.

“This government promised a new era of statecraft, to cite a previous event as justification is even more nauseating.

“We all know, it has always been the motive of the Akufo Addo/Bawumia government to frustrate Mr. Domelevo, due to the wonderful work he is doing exposing the rot in Government and often clashing with those at the helm of affairs.

“We all knew this government was never serious about the fight against corruption but this move exposes the government for what it is: a complete sham and disaster which is clutching at straws on its way out.

“The question on the minds of many is whether this ill-timed decision is to stop the gallant public servant from investigating a massive rot in government?

I am therefore calling on all well-meaning Ghanaians to condemn the move and demand that this obnoxious directive is rescinded immediately”

As you may recall Mr. Domelevo was the darling ‘boy’ of the NPP in opposition when he exposes the series of financial irregularities in the Elsewhere Mahama government.

The much love for his stature depleted when he touches the nerves of a powerful Osafo Marfo, the senior minister over accusations of fiscal irregularities, a charge Osafo Marfo denies.

  • Voter registration exercise kicks off nationwide

The Electoral Commission will today embark on a month-long nationwide voter registration exercise for the December general elections.

The exercise takes off today across the country after months of bickering and agitation by the opposition NDC and other CSOs.

The exercise will be held in some 6788 clusters made up of five registration centres each across the country.

It will be conducted in 5 phases, each phase spanning 6 days with additional days for mop up.

The commission assures it will maintain strict health protocols to protect registrants against the deadly COVID-19 disease.

Over 44,000 registration officers have been recruited for the mass voter registration exercise beginning Tuesday, June 30, 2020.

The Chairperson of the Commission, Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensa who made this known said all the officials have been well trained to ensure that the exercise is without hitches.

At a press briefing Monday evening, the EC Chairperson said, “a major concern a number of citizens have raised with us has to do with the quality of our temporary officers. We have recruited, trained, and deployed over 44, 000 staff into the field. We are confident that the training provided them to operate efficiently and professionally. As part of the training, we have drummed home the importance of instilling in them the principles of integrity, fairness, and transparency in all their activities throughout the registration process”.

She said the registration officers have been made to sign an oath to bear true allegiance to the principles underlying the conduct of the registration exercise.

Additionally, 7,000 health personnel have also been deployed to assist with the sensitization and compliance of safety measures given the outbreak of the Coronavirus infections in the country.

  • NDC swerves NPP – Choosing a running mate

The political season is safely here with us and it is pregnant with loads of action; promising to be exciting and full of surprises.

With the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) having chosen its Presidential candidate in the person of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo with his running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over the weekend, all eyes turn towards the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as avid watchers of the political space await the choice of a running mate for President John Dramani Mahama.

Many people especially those belonging to the NPP fraternity have taunted the NDC that they are unable to choose a running mate citing several reasons for holding such a view.

One of the many criticisms is that the NDC lack the men or women with the skillset to be able to occupy the position of running mate to President Mahama who is vigorously staging a comeback.

They also add that a lot of possible candidates have declined to be running mate to President Mahama because they do not have faith in the candidature of Mr. Mahama.

Another school of thought say that the NDC fears that its running mate would be subjected to public scrutiny if he/she is announced soon.

It is fair for people to hold diverse views in the same political setting. In the same light, such diverse views should not be immune to a certain measure of scrutiny if not harsher.

A careful look into the bases of criticisms levelled against the NDC reveals a pack of convoluted and unconvincing arguments. For instance, the NPP have always said that Dr. Bawumia is too strong for any NDC candidate for the running mate slot hence the inability of the NDC to announce somebody.

The above cannot be true because the NDC indeed have some very fine brains including Dr. Kwesi Botchway, Alex Mould and several others who can hold their own against the current Vice President. Another strategic candidate is Zanetor Rawlings who has what it takes to stand and be counted on any intellectual platform.

And if indeed the candidate would be no much for Dr. Bawumia and any early announcement would present him/her for undue scrutiny and attacks as the NPP would want all to believe, then the NDC as a rational entity would certainly not announce this early.

All in all, the NDC has been able to get a good deal of attention for the selection of a running mate for President Mahama. It is the single biggest anticipated announcement on the political scene at the moment.

People across the political spectrum have tried to assign their own reasons for the perceived delay in the choice of a running mate for the NDC in the upcoming December 7 elections.

However, all the information and misinformation, front-page propaganda and the spiritual insinuations have all been made possible by that same perceived delay. The media and the people are salivating at the thought of what happens next.

The delay has made an event which would have been forgotten by now, a most anticipated one, attracting the interest of every one with an eye for politics.

The NDC might have pulled a masterstroke and should their choice turn out to be active and charismatic, the colour of the election would significantly be altered in no small measure.

It is indeed in order to posit that an early announcement would give the candidate enough time to contribute to the campaign. However, giving the groundswell of attention this delay has caused, the time is still enough for the person to make an impact if he/is formidable enough.

Let the predictions and forecasting or prophesies go on for now. After all, democracy allows it all.

  • Ensure speedy delivery of projects – Roads and Highways Minister to contractors

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta last Saturday inspected some roads in the Eastern Region with a call on contractors to ensure speedy delivery of projects.

The tour was to afford the minister firsthand information on ongoing major projects under the Ghana Highways Authority and the Department of Urban Roads in the Eastern Region.

Some of the roads inspected included, the 24.8 kilometre Osiem to Begoro road constructed by General Construction Limited, Suhum-Asamankese road by Muudu Construction Limited, Asamankese roads, Volta Impe Limited; Asamankese-Akroso road, I.B. Maigida Construction Limited; Akroso-Oda, Midwest Construction Limited; Oda-Amonafopong road, Memphis Metropolitan Limited and Erdmac Limited.

The rest were Kade-Asuom road, constructed by Ghacos Limited, Asuom-Kwabeng, First Sky Limited; Kwabeng-Akyem Akropong, Justmoh Limited; Awenare-Ekroso Asamama, First Sky Limited and Akyem Akropong Awenere town roads, Doncross Limited.

Mr Amoako-Atta stated that for 10 years, the Akyem Wenchi Junction to Kade road had seen no improvement since it was awarded to the contractors.

“The government would not sit down for any contractor to delay projects for no just reason and any contractor who unduly delays any project would have his contract immediately terminated,” he warned.

He added that the contractual relationship between a contractor and the government demanded that contractors fulfilled their part, while the government was also under obligation to do its part, adding that such delays hindered the progress of development of road infrastructure in the country.

He urged contractor who were working on major road projects to avoid shoddy works and unnecessary delays, urging them to deliver on quality work.

On the Osiem-Begoro stretch of the road constructed by General Construction Limited, work was almost complete with 14.3 kilometres out of the 24.8 kilometres road receiving its primary seal while the rest of the stretch had been slated to be completed in 8 weeks.

Mr Amoako-Atta commended the contractor for producing quality work and urged all contractors to emulate, adding that the government would continue to promote quality work, and despise shoddy work.

He assured that the government would honour all payments due to enable the contractors to work efficiently and effectively, stressing the need for them to work hard to complete all road projects on time.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Eric Kwakye Darfour who was part of the tour was grateful for work done, recalling that the region was characterised with a lot of bad roads.

He hoped that most of the roads in the region would be completed in six months and urged the contractors to avoid delays and produce quality work.

  • Corona Quacks II to expose AMA and a major hospital – Anas hints

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has hinted that the second part of his exposé on the coronavirus pandemic will show how some persons profiteered from measures taken by government to ease the burden on Ghanaians during the lockdown in Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi.

He cited the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) as complicit in the sale of food meant to be distributed freely for residents.

“I recall when the announcement was being made of the food that should be given to the poor and I was driving to AMA because my source had told me that while the President was busily announcing where it should go and all that, my source was telling me that the food was available for sale.

“So, I went there and I bought rice, eggs, oil and all that that is supposed to go to the poor. This is what you will see in Number 2.

“You will also see a hospital and all these cries about PPEs…and somebody is busily stealing. . . .”

He made these known in an exclusive interview on TV3s News@10 on Monday, June 29, announcing that that second part will be ready in a fortnight.

  • US top court strikes down law limiting abortions

The US Supreme Court has ruled that a law restricting abortions in Louisiana is unconstitutional in a landmark decision.

The law required that doctors providing abortions have admitting privileges to nearby hospitals, which the justices said led to an undue burden on women.

Chief Justice John Roberts joined liberal justices in the 5-4 decision in a blow to anti-abortion groups.

The court struck down a similar policy in Texas in 2016, the opinion noted.

This is the first major abortion case ruling from the Supreme Court during the Trump presidency.

The 2014 Louisiana law said that doctors must hold privileges at hospitals within 30 miles (48km) of their practice – which the state argued was to protect women’s health.

But critics said the controversial law would limit the number of providers in the state, violating a woman’s right to an abortion.

    What was the case about?

Medical Services vs Russo asked the Supreme Court to rule on whether to uphold a lower court’s opinion concerning the Louisiana law.

The law required doctors to have admitting privileges to a hospital “not further than 30 miles from the location at which the abortion is performed or induced” in order to perform abortions.

While the state said the requirement was to protect women’s health, pro-choice advocates said that it’s incredibly rare for women to face complications from an abortion. They also pointed out that many hospitals in the region are religiously-affiliated or conservative and don’t allow abortions to take place in their facilities, which severely limits the number of doctors who can carry out the procedure.

This then, in turn, constitutes an undue burden on a woman’s constitutional right to seek an abortion, they said.

A district court agreed that the law was unconstitutional, however, the 5th Circuit appeals court determined no clinics would “likely be forced to close” because of the law, and allowed it to stand.

The petitioners asked the Supreme Court to rule on whether that decision violated past precedents and should be struck down.

What did the justices say? Writing the majority opinion, Justice Stephen Breyer disagreed with the 5th Circuit court reasoning for upholding the Louisiana restrictions.

Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan joined Justice Breyer’s opinion. Justice Roberts concurred, but filed a separate opinion noting that the reason for the ruling was because of the court’s decision “four years ago invalidating a nearly identical Texas law”.

Justice Roberts, a conservative, noted that he dissented in the Texas case, but the question in today’s case was not whether that precedent was right or wrong, “but whether to adhere to it”.

The court’s other conservatives, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh dissented.

Justice Thomas wrote: “Today a majority of the Court perpetuates its ill-founded abortion jurisprudence by enjoining a perfectly legitimate state law and doing so without jurisdiction.”

Justice Thomas also took issue with the fact that the lawsuit was brought by abortion providers, not women themselves, saying for most of the Court’s history, it “maintained that private parties could not bring suit to vindicate the constitutional rights of individuals who are not before the Court”.

“Our abortion precedents are grievously wrong and should be overruled,” he wrote.

Abortion rights advocates have said, however, that mandating women come forward to challenge abortion laws themselves will limit the number of challenges, as many patients do not have access to the financial and legal resources.

What’s the reaction? Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights – the group that challenged the Louisiana law – said the ruling was a relief, “but we’re concerned about tomorrow”.

“As a result of this decision, the clinics in Louisiana can stay open to serve the one million women of reproductive age in the state,” she said.

“Unfortunately, the Court’s ruling today will not stop those hell-bent on banning abortion. We will be back in court tomorrow and will continue to fight state by state, law by law to protect our constitutional right to abortion.”

The White House denounced the ruling, and said it “devalued both the health of mothers and the lives of unborn children”.

Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Professor Karen Swallow Prior, who is against abortion, told the BBC today’s ruling was unsurprising.

“Admitting privileges are a relic from a bygone era of healthcare. The real issue – the same issue at the centre of the Roe v Wade ruling – is the status of the unborn child.”

She said rather than the Supreme Court, the anti-abortion movement should focus on changing people’s minds.

What’s the situation with US abortion laws? Last year saw a rise in the number of Republican states enacting abortion restrictions or passing laws that ban abortion even before many women know they’re pregnant.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, 59 restrictions were passed in 2019 along with bans in several states, including Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri and Ohio.

Anti-abortion groups hope the contested laws will make their way to the Supreme Court and allow for Roe v Wade to be overturned.

If that happens, abortion will not become illegal across the country – rather, the decision will return to the individual states.

And some states have acted to safeguard abortion rights. New York and Illinois last year recognised the right to end, continue or prevent a pregnancy as a fundamental right. They also allow some qualified nurses to provide abortion care.

The bans and many of the restrictive policies have been blocked in courts. Louisiana’s case, had it not been struck down, could have set a precedent for similar laws restricting abortions without criminalising them.

  • Government has no ethnocentric agenda in deployment of soldiers

Minister of Defence Dominic Nitiwul, on Monday, refuted claims by the Minority NDC that government has deployed soldiers to Volta and Oti regions to intimidate residents from registering for the new voter cards.

Mr Nitiwul, responding to the NDC’s allegations and giving an update on the joint security operations along the country’s borders, at a news conference in Accra, said Government had no ethnocentric agenda against any ethnic group or political party in the deployment of security personnel to protect the country’s frontiers.

“Those going that tangent should drop it because it will not help anybody. I want the chiefs and people of the Volta and Oti regions to know that this is pure propaganda and mischief by the NDC and should be ignored, “Mr Nitiwul said, adding, “Those whipping up ethnocentric sentiment should bow down their heads in shame”.

The Minister said the soldiers were deployed to the border towns to prevent unlawful entries and not to polling stations to intimidate or brutalise civilians.

Mr Nitiwul, also the member of Parliament for Bimbilla, said the Akufo-Addo-led government was not interested in ethnic politics, but to implement programmes and policies that would better the lives of Ghanaians.

The Minister said the soldiers deployed under “Operation Enhanced Calm Life” were given resources to stay at the borders for three months, while efforts are underway to find more resources to enable them to police the country’s borders for extra three months.

Recounting when the military deployment started, the Minister said government, through the ministries of Defence and the Interior, started deploying soldiers and police to the border towns from February 21, 2019 under an operation code-named “Operation Conquered Fist”, to complement the efforts of personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Revenue Authority to prevent illegal entries.

On March 30th and April 20th, 2020, government deployed more soldiers to beef up security at the borders following the outbreak of the coronavirus to prevent foreigners from being sneaked into the country and ensure the border closure was respected.

However, he said, government realised that during the lockdown some recalcitrant people were still sneaking foreigners into the country through over 250 unapproved routes and 500 paths, hence it deployed more soldiers to stop the importation of the respiratory disease.

He said, for instance, some 5,000 foreigners attempted to cross into the country during the partial lockdown and were subsequently arrested.

He noted that a test conducted by the health authorities on the suspects revealed that between 10 and 30 per cent Covid-19 infection rate among the suspects.

Mr Nitiwul observed that the deployment of security personnel at the borders helped immensely in reducing crimes at the border towns, especially in the northern part of the country such as Tumu, Bawku and Talensi during the lockdowns.

He, however, said upon easing of COVID-19 restrictions, crime rate started surging at the border towns whilst foreigners started using unapproved routes to enter the country.

He said, on June 18 and June 19, 2020, the Defence Ministry launched an operation code-named “Operation Enhanced Calm Life” to allow more soldiers to be deployed in order to support personnel of the Immigration Service at the borders.

The soldiers were deployed in nine border regions including; Volta, Oti, Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East, Upper West, Bono and Western regions to enforce the border closure in compliance with the COVID-19 protocols.

Mr Nitiwul stated that eight senior officers and 199 soldiers were deployed in the Upper East Region, four senior officers and 65 soldiers in three operational areas in the Upper West Region, three senior officers and 99 soldiers in the North East Region, two senior officers and 70 soldiers in six locations in the Oti Region, three senior officers and 95 soldiers in the Volta Region, whilst the Western Region received one senior officer and 13 soldiers.

Mr Nitiwul condemned the false claims being peddled by the opposition NDC and former President John Mahama, who is the NDC flagbearer for 2020 election, saying that it was pure mischief to create disaffection for the ruling government.

  • Iran issues arrest warrant for Trump

Iran has issued an arrest warrant and asked Interpol for help in detaining US President Donald Trump and dozens of others over the drone strike that killed a top Iranian general in Baghdad.

Tehran prosecutor Ali Alqasimehr said on Monday, June 29, that Trump and more than 30 others who Iran accuses of involvement in the January 3 strike that killed General Qassem Soleimani face “murder and terrorism charges”, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported.

Apart from Trump’s name, Alqasimehr did not identify the other suspects. He stressed that Iran would continue to pursue Trump’s prosecution even after his presidency ends.

Alqasimehr also was quoted as saying that Iran requested a “red notice” be put out for Trump and the others, which represents the highest level arrest request issued by Interpol.

Local authorities end up making the arrests on behalf of the country that request it. The notices cannot force countries to arrest or extradite suspects, but can put government leaders on the spot and limit suspects’ travel, according to Al Jazeera.

In January, the US killed General Soleimani, who oversaw the Revolutionary Guard’s expeditionary Quds Force, and others in an air strike near Baghdad International Airport.

The air strike came after months of incidents raising tensions between the two countries.

Following Soleimani’s murder, Iran retaliated with a ballistic missile strike targeting American troops in Iraq.

  • Kurt Okraku is changing the face of Ghana football – Hay Yartey

Abdul Hay Yartey,a football administrator and talent developer has scored high marks to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, in his short stint in office, saying he has changed the face of Ghana football.

According to the CEO of Kasoa-based Division Two side, Cheetah FC, Okraku’s administration having inherited a desolated Association has done remarkably well in reviving it and giving it hope.

Speaking in an interview on TV Africa’s Sportsworld show, Hay Yartey told host Dennis Osei Gyamfi that, the GFA President would score 90 percent on his scorecard, adding that the interruption caused by the novel Coronavirus pandemic was the only reason the President would not score full marks.

“I think he (Kurt Okraku) has done very well because he never inherited a running FA. It was an FA with problems,it is not like there was a transition from Kwesi Nyantakyi to him. It’s different, where our football was in trouble, where partners were running away and you have to bring back the love. And that slogan alone was something that was big,” he said.

“I will give him 90 percent. Even the reason why I’m not giving him full marks is because of COVID and because of that sponsorship is not coming in but definitely he will get there.”

Haye Yartey said it was refreshing to see how the GFA was taking marketing and branding of football to a new height that had not been experienced before. He commended the administration for the excellent communication and information flow.

“I have been in football for long and this is my first time seeing that apparently there are for instance 70 clubs in the Central region, there 103 clubs in Greater Accra. I’m now getting to know for the first time we have 400 and something referees. So we see good communication flow,” he added.

The manager of Black Stars midfielder, Christian Atsu, however, noted that, by the middle of the President’s term as leader of the GFA, football would be the most attractive and profitable business in the country.

Okraku was sworn into office in October 2019 after winning an election supervised by the FIFA Normalisation Committee.
