  • Government engaging in selective amnesia by failing to lift ban on football – Takyi Arhin

Football administrator Mr. Takyi Arhin is worried about the president’s failure to lift the ban on football activities.

Speaking on Rainbow Sports, the administrator slammed the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for breaking the rules on the protocols in place to contain the spread of the virus at the recent primaries and the acclamation of President Akufo-Addo.

To him, the government is engaging selective amnesia by preventing other activities to be organised and yet, opening the doors for the NPP and other state institutions to organi8se their activities because it will go in their favour.

He further slammed the government for sending military personnel to the Oti, Volta and other regions.

He described the move as intimidating and selfish.

Posterity he added will judge the ruling party for their dishonesty

  • Dont grant mining permit to Shanzi Mining Company Small-scale miners

Small-scale mining groups at the Gbane Community in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region have appealed to the Minerals Commission, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Mining and Inspectorate Division not to grant a permit to Shanxi Mining Company Limited (SMCL) to go into large-scale mining in the area.

The Shanxi Mining Company Limited which was providing mining support service to Yenyaya Mining Group and Pubortaaba Mining Group are seeking permit to go into large-scale mining in the area where the small-scale miners are operating.

The small-scale mining groups, which include the Unique Mining Group and the Nalamtaaba Mining Group, made the call when a consultant engaged them about the interest expressed by the Shanxi Mining Company Limited to go into large-scale mining in the area.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Nalamtaaba Mining Group, Mr Polo Boyark, who made the call on behalf of the small-scale mining groups on Saturday, after the engagement with the consultant, stated that until proper consultation and proper agreement were reached between the Shanxi Mining Company Limited and the small-scale mining groups, the mining regulatory bodies should not grant permit to SMCL to mine on their concessions.

According to the small-scale mining groups they had all acquired the necessary mining permits and therefore would not succumb to any powers that would want to circumvent the laws to allow the Shanxi Mining Company Limited to mine on their concessions without the proper engagement and agreement.

“We will not sit down and allow a foreign mining company to threaten our very livelihoods which we have been depending on for very long years. Unless the proper thing is done, by bringing all of us the small-scale mining groups to sit down and dialogue with the Shanxi Mining Company Limited.”

The group, who threatened that they would resist any attempt if their demand and interest were not met, called on the mining regulatory bodies to ensure that their request were followed before the consideration of granting the Shanxi Mining Company Limited to go into large scale mining.

The Shanxi Mining Company Limited entered into a partnership with the Yenyaya Mining Group and Pubortaaba Mining Group who had legally acquired their concessions to provide mining support service to the two small-scale mining groups.

The Chief Executive Officer of Yenyaya Mining Group, Mr Charles Nadanbon was selected among small-scale mining groups by the government in 2008 to go to China and learn on sustainable mining activities that persuaded and brought the Chinese Mining Company to Ghana, specifically the Gbane community.

The company has been providing mining support services to these small-scale mining groups until recently when the company expressed interest to go into large-scale mining, hence the consultant engaging the small-scale mining groups at Gbane.

  • MUSIGA postpones elections

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has confirmed that it has called off its elections for national executive officers scheduled for June 24.

According to NEC, the decision was taken during an emergency meeting of the NEC, adding that the decision by NEC to call off the elections is due to a number of reasons.

These include the current Covid-19 pandemic which has led to social gathering restrictions and issues related to the elections.

“With the lapse in the original period for the elections, the cards of some members who were eligible to vote have expired, making them ineligible, while others who were ineligible would now be eligible to vote,” NEC said.

According to the NEC, in addition to the above reasons, there is also a pending court case against MUSIGA and some of its executives and functionaries.

“MUSIGA would like to reassure all its members and well-wishers that leadership’s decision to call off the elections is in the best interest of the Union and a new date for the elections will be announced in due course,” NEC added.

  • Association of Ghana Industries calls for policies to enhance MSMEs growth

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has urged the government to implement policies that will help Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) build resilience, local production capacity and enhance medium-term growth.

In a statement signed by Mr Humphrey Ayim Darke, the AGI Vice President to mark the International MSMEs day, the Association said it would continue to dialogue with the Government to ensure sustainable development of our MSMEs in Ghana.

“Our SMEs can continue to count on the advocacy and business development support of AGI and we urge you to cooperate with us to work towards improving the business environment for your businesses to thrive,” it said.

The statement re-affirmed the AGI commitment to the development of MSMEs in Ghana, which represents an estimated 90 percent of all businesses in Ghana.

MSMEs in Ghana are key actors in job creation, revenue generation for Government, and contributing to GDP through various economic activities, it said, adding that many advanced economies today attribute their growth and success to the role of MSME in national development and Ghana is not an exception.

The statement highlighted access to and cost of credit of two major decade-old bottlenecks faced by MSMEs, yet available SME financing schemes had not been able to null the void.

“For this reason, our MSMEs remain undercapitalized. Our SMEs continue to yield to pressure from imports and unfriendly business regulations. COVID-19 has also taken a significant toll on our local industry of which MSMEs were the worst hit,” it said.

A number of these firms have had to suspend business operations with other downsizing to keep afloat.

While we commend the Government for the Gh¢ 600 million relief package and the 50 percent subsidy on electricity, AGI believes the sustainability and timeliness of Government interventions were crucial for the continuity of business.

We welcome efforts by the Government to extend similar relief support to the large-scale enterprises as well, it said.

The statement commended development partners such as UNIDO, BUSAC FUND, NBSSI, Star Ghana, the E.U., GIZ, and business associations for the collective effort in supporting MSME development in the country.

  • The great man on the 5 cedis note: Here is everything you need to know about him

Hastings Kamuzu Banda, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Kwame Nkrumah, Mfantsipim and Achimota schools, what do all these people and educational institutions share for all their intents and purpose?

A straightforward google research will uncover that they all had a connection to Gold Coast scholarly, evangelist, and instructor, Reverend Dr James Emman Kwegyir-Aggrey.

Banda, Azikwe and Nkrumah all turned into the primary leaders of their individual nations in the wake of establishing critical connections with the African freedom during his African visit.

    Who is J.E Kwegyir-Aggrey

As indicated by students of history, Kwegyir-Aggrey was conceived in Anomabu in the Central Region on October 18, 1875 to Okyeame Kwadwo Kwegyir, a companion of the then ace chieftain Amonu IV and his significant other, Princess Abena Anowa of Ajumako.

Dr Kwegyir-Aggrey was the seventeenth offspring of his dad and fourth of his mom Abena Anowa, third and last spouse of Okyeame Kwegyir.

He was given his baptism in the Gold Coast and he was named James.

    Educational Background

Preceding his eighteenth birthday celebration, he enlisted at the Wesley Boys Senior High School (presently Mfantsipim School) in Cape Coast, where he was noted by his European guides as a skilled and special person as he was at that point learning Greek and Latin. His enthusiastic discourse persuaded Governor Guggsiberg to turn Achimota school to a co-instructive foundation. He was delegated as the first Vice Principal of Achimota School by Sir Guggisberg so as to help Rev Fraser.

“The surest method to hold individuals down is to teach the men and disregard the ladies. On the off chance that you instruct a man, you just teach an individual, yet on the off chance that you teach a lady, you instruct an entire country,” Aggrey said.

James Kwegyir-Aggrey taught Dr Kwame Nkrumah as his student whiles he was in Achimota School then Government Training College and presented him to Marcus Garvey and other social liberties activists.

He planned the insignia of Achimota School and migrated to Ghana with his better half and youngsters. In May 1927 he went back to the United States, and in July he was admitted to a clinic in Harlem, New York, where he kicked the bucket soon thereafter.

Member of Parliament for Ningo Pampram, Sam George has called the Deputy Minister of Information “ignorant” on live TV.

The Deputy Minister was debating the member of parliament on TV3’s New Day Program on Monday morning. Speaking on the deployment of the military to the Volta Region and Oti Region, the deputy minister said the money spent on quarantining immigrants from Togo who came into Ghana during the lock down could have built a school.

Responding to the minister, Sam George said the minister “doesn’t listen” when people are talking and that is why he comes to TV to “goof” all the time.

He chided Pius Hadzide for saying the money spent on the immigrants on the border could have built a school and quizzed if the military they have deployed wouldn’t be fed and if money won’t be spent on them.

  • Benchmark valuation cut discourages local investments in the oil palm industry – OPDAG

President of the Oil Palm Development Association of Ghana (OPDAG), Samuel Avaala, has expressed that the 50 percent cut in benchmark valuations on imports is a disincentive to local investors in the oil palm industry.

Samuel Avaala asserted that the benchmark valuation policy has made imports cheaper hence reducing local investments in that sector.

Speaking to GhanaWeb, the palm oil boss said the oil palm industry experiencing an indiscriminate valuation policy will make local investors flee.

“If you are an investor and you know that importing the product into the country is cheaper than making it in the country, it will just make business sense to halt the productions and rather import.”

Mr Avaala also noted that, “once imports are cheaper more oil palm will come into the country. We are not saying imports should not come in. Ghana is a net importer, our indigenous production cannot meet local consumption. We are asking that these imports come in at parity.”

The 50 percent benchmark value for imports will benefit the country when applied to commodities that are not locally produced, he said.

“Pharmaceuticals, building materials, spare parts amongst others that are not produced here can enjoy such benefits so they are made cheaper for the consumers.”

The Benchmark Valuation cut has virtually brought the sector onto its knees and coupled with the effects of the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the Association fears the worst for the industry.

The Association believes the reversal of the valuation cut would safeguard the continuous existence of the sector and guarantee the economic livelihoods of the tens of thousands within the oil palm value chain in the country.

  • Call your military men to order Aflao Traditional Council to Akufo-Addo

The Aflao Traditional Council has appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to call the military personnel deployed to the Volta region to order as they are brutalizing civilians in Aflao

The council is also asking for the removal of obstacles placed at various points in the town.
The council, in statement signed by its president, Torgbui Amenya Fiti V, said the presence of the troops is causing fear and panic amongst the inhabitants as they are embarking on house to house searches and brutalizing motor bike riders within the town.

“The presence of the troops started causing fear and panic amongst the inhabitants when they embarked on house to house searches and brutalizing of motor bikers within the towns. Additionally, the constant harassment of citizens occupying the borderlands are having detrimental effect on agricultural and other produce being brought to the markets.”

The statement further adds that “the Government of Ghana cannot allow its troops to brutalize its own citizens without recourse to justice whilst hypocritically lamenting George Floyds’ passing at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis (USA). We are peace loving and believe in Ghana’s “Freedom and Justice” for all.”

“Because we are peace loving does not make us cowards; when the fire is lit, there will be no turning back and the said fire will consume everything in its path,” the council warned.

    Below is the full statement

    AFLAO LIVES MATTER

PRESS RELEASE BY AFLAO TRADITIONAL COUNCIL

    29TH JUNE 2O20

As the Government projects it’s power across the Volta Region (without doing same at the Western frontier with Ivory Coast or the Northern frontier with Burkina Faso) and to a larger extent Aflao along Ghana’s Eastern frontier with the Republic of Togo, we the Chiefs and people of Aflao within Ketu South Municipality are feeling surrounded by detachments consisting of the army, police, immigration and national security armed personnel in uniform. These detachments, which look more like an occupying force, were deployed on Thursday 18th June 2020 according to media reports. Tents were erected and checkpoints mounted all over the rural settlements specifically Akato to Wudoaba where tents were erected in market squares (against civil norms) thereby inhibiting people from performing their daily activities.

The presence of the troops started causing fear and panic amongst the inhabitants when they embarked on house to house searches and brutalizing of motor bikers within the towns. Additionally, the constant harassment of citizens occupying the borderlands are having detrimental effect on agricultural and other produce being brought to the markets.

“One thing that is beating our imagination is how Ghanaians have been conditioned by politicians to believe that the Flawus are so cheap to be bought when it comes to politics.”

“But at some point maybe Ghanaians will wake up and recognize that politicians will continue to create this divide and rule antics to enable them have their way through.” Aflao is the second most populous town in terms of population after Ho in the whole of the Volta Region. Aflao border is one of the top three (Tema Harbour and Kotoka International Airport are the others) revenue generators in Ghana. Despite all these revenue generation, the town with over 70,000 population continues to be denied developmental projects. Those who are fortunate to land jobs in Lome (Togo), the Kayayes and truck pushers are languishing at home due the border closure.

The Aflao Traditional Council, together with all the security agencies within Ketu South Municipality supported the Government in its implementation of the protocols to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and the records are there to prove that the MUSEC is on top of security in the municipality.

However, it should be noted that silence in the face of brutality being dished out to innocent citizens around the municipality only goes to embolden the aggressor. These sorts of abuse of power clearly goes to show that the detachment of security personnel operating in and around Aflao lack knowledge in civic duties in addition to their military training. Law abiding citizens’ have certain inalienable rights that the Constitution protects. Brutalizing of innocent civilians is frown on by the Constitution of Ghana. Even Prisoners of War are protected by The Hague Convention let alone civilians going about their lawful business.

The Government of Ghana cannot allow its troops to brutalize its own citizens without recourse to justice whilst hypocritically lamenting George Floyds’ passing at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis (USA). We are peace loving and believe in Ghana’s “Freedom and Justice” for all.

We as Chiefs cannot look on unconcerned when security personnel brutalize our citizens no matter how difficult the situation they find themselves in. Please note that because we are peace loving does not make us cowards; when the fire is lit, there will be no turning back and the said fire will consume everything in its path.

We the Chiefs of Aflao Traditional Council in collaboration with Aflao indigenes home and abroad wish to appeal to H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana to call to order the military personnel brutalizing the civilian population as well as withdraw the obstacles placed in the daily activities of the Aflao people.

Paramount Chief of Aflao Traditional Area

  • This is what is happening in Aflao now

An identified resident at Aflao by name Israel Emmanuel Ahedor has posted a video to portray what exactly is happening at the Aflao border following news of military engagements in the area.

The video as posted on Isreal’s  personal Twitter handle shows nothing unusual was happening.

According to Ahedor Israel, he trusts there is a lot of political agenda that is being connected to the news of a military deployment at the Ghana-Togo border when business is normally ongoing in the zone.

Ahedor may, howbeit, not be exact with his opinion although he truthfully captured no military men in the zone during his visit.

The reason is that the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has not unlocked the borders to travel from the time he administered a travel ban to aid in containing the spread of Coronavirus.

If military officers are deployed to borders there to monitor no strangers are appearing in the country to sign up for the voters’ registration cards as Hon KT Hammond made mention in a trended video, then the military men must be at illegal routes to implement the order.

“I cannot brand the Volta Population as foreigners; I did not say that. I have friends in parliament who are from the Volta Region. Okudzeto Ablakwa, Doe Adjaho, Fiifi Kwetey are all my friends and they are even part of my fan club. So how can I brand them as non-Ghanaians? • Ladies constantly hit on me – Adjetey Anang

Renowned Ghanaian Actor Adjetey Anang on the recent Instagram Live Sessions with Nana Adwoa Sarkodie, made a shocking revelation concerning ladies hitting on him.

“One challenge I constantly deal with is the attention I get from the opposite sex. It never gets to a point where I can say I’m done with that. It’s a daily battle. The ladies are bold, they come at me. But the Bible even tells us to flee from such temptations” he stated while speaking about some challenges he faces in his career.

Discussing the topic “Waiting On God”. Adjetey Anang said “If you’re waiting on something, there must be a sense of belief that you would get what you’re waiting for. You wait in anticipation. Just like David who was anointed to be King at 16, he waited till he was 30 before becoming a King”.

He described his own predicament waiting on God for a child after several years of marriage. “It was really hard waiting for 7 years to have a child after marriage. In hindsight I can put it in perspective and encourage others. The wait was worth it because it increased my faith.”

He stressed it was difficult sometimes with the glimmer of hope when they’re expecting and all of a sudden a miscarriage happens. “People also made it difficult by always suggesting solutions and offering unnecessary sympathy. Even though it came from a place of concern, it only made things worse for my wife and I” he said.

Speaking about his career, the multiple award winning actor recalled that he started off being concerned with showcasing his talents and following his passion. The fame came along unexpectedly and he learnt how to adapt and make a living out of it.

“One of the things I did to stay relevant to this point is adding value to what I do. Talent is good but it’s not enough. And so immediately I realized that, education became something I couldn’t negotiate on. I think that’s one of the things that really made me accessible to all walks of life and the business aspect as well” he added.

Asked about how he combines being an astute Christian with working in such an industry, he responded “When Jesus commanded his disciples to go into the world and make disciples of all nations, he didn’t specify and I believe He wanted us to go into places that are usually alluded to as sinful and use our influence to impact those industries. So I chose acting because I found fulfillment there and saw it as an opportunity for ministration as well. Where there is darkness, you shine your light”.

However he insisted that he doesn’t go to work with a judgemental or condemnation spirit but rather to negotiate and showcase his values to others. “I live by example and not by speech. That has helped me to sustain this quest to make a difference in the industry.”

He also encouraged young upcoming actors to thread cautiously and endeavour to leave a legacy rather than focus on the fame and money.

“If you’re a Christian, there are certain qualities you can’t part away with and prayer is important in keeping a good character. Bad company would produce bad character so you have to sift who your friends are and who you hang out with on a daily basis, because before you know it you’re speaking their language. You have to be careful that the quality of friendship you keep is not impacting on you negatively.”

  • NDC Chairman threatens UHAS VC

The autonomy of the University of Health & Allied Sciences (UHAS) is being threatened by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region, led by the Regional Chairman, Henry Ametefe.

The chairman, in what many have described as a distasteful rant, warned the Vice-Chancellor of UHAS, Prof. John Owusu Gyapong, to be careful of his conduct at the university because he “is on the land of Voltarians”.

Mr. Ametefe, who was addressing journalists, made some serious allegations against Prof. Gyapong, whose reforms and initiatives have made the nine-year-old university the preferred place for health-related research in the West African sub-region.

Currently, the Institute of Health Research at UHAS is leading the Ghanaian consortium to conduct a quantitative study on the introduction of the new malaria vaccine (RTS) in Ghana.

And instead of commending the strides of the university, Mr. Ametefe rather accused Prof. Gyapong of “nepotism”.

    Tribal Bigotry

“But what are we seeing? We have put an Abomoso citizen as our vice-chancellor. I know he is doing so many dirty things there and removing Voltarians; Ewe people. But all our people are quiet. Togbe Afede and all of them; why?” he queried.

He further incited the Ewes against the Akyems, saying, “And Volta Region, we have allowed Prof. Gyapong as vice-chancellor because we are very civilised people. If the Akyems do not know that Volta Region believes in civility then Prof. Gyapong must be careful that he is sitting on our land as a vice-chancellor in a university that we built without making noise.”

Checks show that although the staff of UHAS cut across persons from all parts of the country, it is dominated by people from the Volta Region, and the assertions of the NDC chairman could not be true.

Under Prof. Gyapong, UHAS has been able to build a 640-bed capacity hostel from its internally generated funds to increase its admission by 40 per cent.

Mr. Ametefe, a former Deputy Regional Minister under John Mahama, extended his hate-filled speech to the whole country, saying that Ewes were being discriminated against.

“Why what have we (Ewes) done? As I speak now, most of our prominent citizens who are in various positions in government have all been removed,” he claimed.

“Dr. Kwaku Awoonor, who is a very experienced medical practitioner, has no position now in the Ghana Health Service. He has been replaced by ineffective and incompetent doctor to take over from him, even though he groomed that person to position. Why? Prof. Mawutor Avorke was removed from University of Education, Winneba because he is not a son of the Fante soil,” he claimed further.

  • Military in Ketu municipality will not participate in registration exercise – MCE

The government has justified reasons why it has deployed heavy military presence to the Ketu Municipality in the Volta region.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Elliot Edem Agbenorwu, reacting to concerns raised over the security presence stated emphatically that the military is not in the area to cause fear or panic.

The move, according to him is meant to enforce the closure of the border and not to intimidate anyone as speculated by residents and the opposition NDC.

Ketu Municipality he lamented has been identified as a hot spot for coronavirus and the cases recorded are all foreigners hence the move to have the military men in the area to enforce the border closure.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he said that human trafficking and other crimes across the border were still rampant, in spite of the closure of the border.

The military he added will not partake in the voter registration exercise hence Ghanaians should treat with competent claims that the government has deployed the military to intimidate residents in the region.

He said the military men are just 27 and stressed, ”take it from me as the MCE and the Chairman of the Security Council that the military is not in the area to participate in the registration exercise. The military will not be near any registration centre”.

He also asked Ghanaians to ignore comments from Asokwa MP KT Hammond, who has claimed the military has been sent to the area to prevent Tohgolese from registring.

He stressed, the military will not participate in the registration exercise, they will not be seen at any of the registration centres. They will enforce the closure of our border.

Residents in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta region have raised concern over the deployment some heavily armed security personnel into the area.

The security contingent which includes the military and officials of the Ghana Immigration Service has been deployed into some communities along the Ghana-Togo boarder such as Wudoaba, Korpeyia and Anoenu since Monday 22, June.

  • Recapitalization prepared economy for coronavirus BoG

The clean-up exercise undertaken by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) that led to collapse of some nine local banks in 2018 inadvertently prepared the financial sector of the Ghanaian economy to deal with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, Mrs Elsie Addo Awadzi, Second Deputy Governor of the BoG, has said.

Speaking at a forum themed “MSME Manufacturing Capabilities, Responding to COVID-19 and Opportunities Beyond,” she said : “The successful completion of major reforms in the banking, savings and loans and microfinance sectors by the Bank of Ghana prior to the onset of the pandemic, has played a significant role in cushioning the impact of the pandemic on our economy.

“Banks and other financial institutions are now better able to support their customers at this critical time. Smaller financial institutions, however, are themselves at high risk given that many of their clients are MSMEs who are significantly impacted by the pandemic and as a result have had difficulty in servicing their loans.

“Regulatory reliefs recently provided by the Bank of Ghana to the savings and loans, microfinance, and rural and community bank sectors, were therefore designed to help ease the burden on them and by extension their clients.”

Mrs Addo Awadzi added that : “It is encouraging to see that banks and SDIs have responded to policy and regulatory measures recently announced by the Bank of Ghana. For example, bank and SDI lending rates have declined on average by about 2 percentage points (200 basis points) since the end of March 2020, and banks have recently advanced new loans in the region of GH¢3 billion to support manufacturers of pharmaceutical products and PPEs, to help in the fight against the pandemic. What is more, banks and SDIs have agreed to defer some customer loan repayments by granting moratoria from about 3 months to 12 months. Fees on a number of electronic payments and related transactions have also been waived or reduced.

“While these policy and regulatory interventions have been the initial responses to help contain the impact of the pandemic, the real work lies ahead of us all. How will our economy recover from this unprecedented major shock? How will our MSME sector recover? What would the post-COVID economic landscape in Ghana look like?

“As challenging as the current situation is, we must not lose hope. No one knows how long the pandemic will last for, but surely a day will come when we can put it behind us. It is important, in the meanwhile, that intentional efforts are made to keep the MSME sector alive so that it can support the post-COVID economic recovery effort. It represents, after all, 85% of our national economy.

“Notably, the MSME story in Ghana has not been a single-sided story. In spite of the enormous challenges the sector faced before and during the pandemic, the resilience of this sector has also been evident. Even during the lockdown, small food processing businesses, eateries, and others worked hard under very difficult and risky conditions to produce food and other products and services for households and other clients.

“Micro and small fashion businesses very quickly stepped in to help produce face masks for use by the public. Production of hand sanitizers and other health and safety products suddenly became possible in Ghana. With the continued easing of COVID-related restrictions, it is heart-warming to see that the MSME sector is slowly, but surely, bouncing back.

“This is a part of the MSME story that needs to be amplified. I have always been intrigued by the relentless spirit of the Ghanaian entrepreneur, who against all odds, always finds a way to move forward in their business endeavours. It is this spirit that needs to be promoted and supported to help build a stronger and more resilient Ghanaian economy, post-COVID 19.

“In planning for the post-COVID economic recovery, we need to address a few critical issues. How can the MSME sector be supported and positioned to help turn the disruptions in global supply chains into a national advantage, and thereby build a more self-reliant and resilient economy? How can we ensure that the post-COVID Ghanaian economy leaves no one behind?

“To do this, we need critical public-private sector investments in key infrastructure over the medium-term to increase the manufacturing capacity of our economy. We need to re-tool and re-equip the MSME sector to leverage technology for more innovation. We need to increase access to finance for MSMEs. We need a renewed focus on equitable and inclusive growth to ensure that the MSME sector, and in particular, women and youth entrepreneurs are not left behind. I am very glad to see that you have lined up very distinguished speakers who will be speaking on these issues at this forum.”

  • Celta Vigo defender Joseph Aidoo named in La Liga ToTW after imposing display against Barcelona

Ghana defender Joseph Aidoo has been included in Spanish La Liga Team of the Week following his dominant display for Celta Vigo in the 2-2 draw with Barcelona on matchday 29.

Aidoo, 24, is gradually becoming a fan favourite at the Balaídos following his all-round performances for the Sky Blues in the ongoing Spanish top-flight.

After his masterful performance in Celta Vigo’s shocking 1-0 victory at Real Sociedad in midweek, Aidoo repeated an even more distinctive outing when Oscar Garcia’s men encountered Barcelona at the Estadio de Balaídos on Saturday.

Barcelona broke the deadlock in the 20th minute through Luis Suarez via Lionel Messi’s assist.

But the lead was swallowed on the 50th-minute mark through Russian international Fedor Smolov before the Catalan giants restored their advantage courtesy, Suarez.

However, Celta Vigo fought back to stun Barcelona through Iago Aspas’s 88th minute free-kick strike to dent their opponent’s title charge.

Aidoo, who enjoyed full throttle for his side, proved to be a thorn in the flesh of Quique Setien’s side throughout the encounter.

His performance has not gone unnoticed as he has been added to the league’s Team of the Week for match-day 29.

Aidoo has been a stalwart for the side since joining from Belgian side KRC Genk last summer.

He has a single assist to his credit and is yet to score a debut La Liga goal after 28 games involved.

  • Kojo Weaporn releases ‘Dispose the Borla Songs’

Rapper Kojo Weaporn has managed to be in the trends again after the release of another intriguing and mind-boggling song dubbed “Dispose the Borla Songs”.

The song comes on the heels of a video he made whiles sitting on the toilet.

The most talked-about song over the weekend started with the background voices of Alkaline Richest and Asare Richway.

In a line of the song, he said “Where I’m from, so so crap soor they be selling, no be say we no get talent oo, y? w? ne dozen” – a line which seems to reiterate opinions of some Ghanaian music lovers who agreed with his rants in the video he made a few days ago.

Recall the Tarkwa rapper once recorded a song wishing some top celebrities in the entertainment industry be replaced by dead celebrities he felt had better talent to show Ghanaians but were short-lived.

The Devil’s Work crooner said in his new song that he received a lot of backlash from a section of Ghanaians who felt his “Devil’s Work Cover” freestyle was in a bad taste.

He cited that his freestyle had given him buzz whiles his great content-driven songs do not receive the same reviews.

In the new song, Weaporn makes his message very clear as he states that Ghanaians keep talking about “putting Ghana on the map” but end up promoting musicians who churn out “borla” songs.

Weaporn also mentions AY Poyoo as one of the musicians who is getting attention for producing songs that lack quality.

He, however, entreated Ghanaians to support rappers like him, who invest their time and put in a lot of work to produce good and quality music.

“Nothing dey work for here oo, gyedy? man power,” he rapper tweeted. To wit good talent and content is being ignored.

  • Bernard Mensah strikes as Kayserispor stun Sivasspor in Turkish Super Lig

Ghana international Bernard Mensah was on target as Kayserispor registered a 2-0 away triumph over Sivasspor in the Turkish Super Lig on Sunday.

The 25-year-old’s effort seven minutes to full-time secured all three points for the Anatolian Star in the match week 29 fixture at Yeni Sivas 4 Eylul Stadium.

Despite the win, Kayserispor still stay trapped in the relegation zone while Sivasspor are third on the standings.

The goal was Mensah’s fifth strike of the season in 23 league appearances. He also has eight assists to his name this term.

Hasan Huseyin Acar broke the deadlock for Kayserispor in the third minute of first-half injury time, benefiting from a Pedro Henrique assist.

That was after Mert Hakan Yandas wasted a 12th-minute penalty for the home side.

In the 83rd minute, Mensah wrapped up all three points for the visitors with a cool penalty.

He will hope to continue his fine form when the Anatolian Star host fifth-placed Besiktas in their next game.

The midfielder joined Kayserispor on a permanent contract last year following an initial loan deal from Atletico Madrid.

He had loan spells with Turkish club Kasimpasa and Portuguese fold Vitoria Guimaraes before transferring to Kayserispor.

Owing to his fine showing in the Super Lig, Mensah has reportedly attracted interest from giants Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Besiktas amid rumours of an imminent exit from Kayserispor at the end of the season.

“Every football player wants to play [for] a big team,” Mensah said in relation to the speculations, as reported by Fanatik.

“I am currently thinking only about Kayserispor.

“If such an offer comes, it will be considered.

“Every footballer wants to play in the Champions League and in the European League, [but] I’m happy here right now.

“However, if the offer comes from a big team, it will be important for the player’s career. Then I will talk to our mother, Berna [Kayserispor Chairman Berna Gozbas?].”

Mensah, a full Ghana international, will hope his fine season performance at club level convinces Black Stars coach CK Akonnor for a recall following a long snub for national duty.

  • Access to credit for MSMEs improved Bank of Ghana

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has taken steps to improve access to credit for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) through the banks, savings and loans companies, microfinance companies, and rural and community banks.

This is according to Mrs Elsie Addo Awadzi, Second Deputy Governor of the BoG.

Speaking at a forum themed “MSME Manufacturing Capabilities, Responding to COVID-19 and Opportunities Beyond,” organized by the ENGINE Business Network (EBN), she said:

“I encourage all EBN members to approach their financial institutions to explore financing and other opportunities available for MSMEs, and in particular for youth and women entrepreneurs. In addition to financial services, a number of these financial institutions are increasingly providing technical, entrepreneurial, and market access support to MSMEs to help make their businesses more viable.

“I encourage you also to engage actively with the Ghana Association of Banks, and industry associations representing the savings and loans companies, microfinance companies, and rural and community banks, to help these institutions better understand the needs of EBN members and to fashion out specific products and services to support you.

“We are at the Bank of Ghana, are committed to ensuring that our policies and regulatory measures help to promote macroeconomic stability and growth, not only for a few, but for all Ghanaians. By promoting monetary and financial stability, we seek to create an enabling environment that supports all economic players to contribute their fair share to socio-economic development and nation-building.

“In addition to bringing down inflation and interest rates over the last three years, the Bank of Ghana has cleaned up the banking and SDI sectors, promoted emerging technologies to support digital financial services that make retail payments more convenient and that expand access to critical financial services such as savings, loans, insurance, and pensions even for the informal sector.

“We have also successfully launched the Ghana Deposit Protection Scheme, which helps to protect hard-earned savings of entrepreneurs like yourselves, so that you are not left vulnerable in the event that your financial institution collapses.

“The Bank of Ghana has also recently launched the Ghana Sustainable Banking Principles in partnership with the Ghana Association of Banks and the Environmental Protection Agency.

“These are a set of seven principles adopted by banks in Ghana in November 2019, by which they commit to scaling up lending to five key sectors of the economy1 in a manner that promotes good environmental management practices and social justice including through gender equity and access to finance for all.”

She further noted that the clean-up exercise undertaken by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) that led to collapse of some nine local banks in 2018 inadvertently prepared the financial sector of the Ghanaian economy to deal with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, Mrs Elsie Addo Awadzi, Second Deputy Governor of the BoG, has said.
