  • ‘Moneycracy’ deepens perceptions that politicians are corrupt – Atik Mohammed

PNC General Secretary, Atik Mohammed has called on political party members who aspire to contest Parliamentary elections to desist from inducing electorates with money in exchange for their votes.

Atik Mohammed noted that should the culture of moneycracy in Ghana’s politics be allowed to fester, it will have adverse effects on the House of Legislature.

Making his submissions on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, he wondered why people readily spend huge sums of money just to get into Parliament.

“What is exactly in Parliament that people are willing to spend millions and millions of Ghana cedis?” he questioned.

Atik Mohammed was commenting on the just-ended primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) which saw some aspriants sharing various sums of money and items to delegates to influence their votes.

The PNC General Secretary has kicked against such practice stating emphatically ”it deepens the perception that politicians are terribly corrupt”.

He also tounched on the violent clashes that characterized the primaries on Saturday, June 20, 2020.

According to him, elections should not be a do or die affair.

“It’s unfortunate that some of them turned violent, which by all accounts, it is not acceptable. We shouldn’t condone it. We contest elections for opportunities to serve. So, it shouldn’t become do or die.It is the do or die mentality that’s making the cost of elections, particularly the primaries, expensive,” he said.

  • At long last: John Mahama names a running mate come Saturday, report says

Excellency Former President John Dramani Mahama speculatively set to unveil his running mate this Saturday in a private ceremony before the National Democratic Congress NDC council of Elders.

This is the same day the New Patriotic Party NPP has set to acclaim their Flag bearer His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo in another private ceremony in Accra.

Many have read meaning into the anticipated program of the opposition. Many pundits claim that the opposition wants to test the popularity of their candidate as compared to the President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo.

Already the President always leads the former President anytime they both organise sessions online to engage their followers. While President Akuffo Addo gets around 40k views, President Mahama will be trailing around 12k.

This clearly testifies the social media popularity of both candidates.

Many people feel President John Dramani Mahamas scheduled big announcement could disrupt the President’s popularity online in his acclamation since majority of Ghanaians knows he is the sole candidate but nobody knows the person President Mahama will unveil.

  • Government to integrate Births and Deaths, NIA databases to enhance identification of citizens

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia says government is working to integrate the databases of the Births and Deaths Registry and the National Identification Authority to enhance citizens’ identification.

The integration process, which is expected to be finalised next year, would also allow new born babies to receive unique identification numbers and use them to register with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust and the National Insurance Scheme when they grow up.

He said government had already digitised 80 per cent of the Births and Deaths Registry’s manual data and would be completed by next year.

Vice President Bawumia gave the assurance on Thursday when he paid a surprise visit to the Headquarters of the Births and Deaths Registry in Accra to familiarise himself with its operations.

He was received on arrival by Reverend Kingsley Asare Addo, the Principal Assistant Registrar, who took him round the various departments including the Archives, Server and Computer Rooms to observe their operations.

Dr Bawumia assured of government’s commitment to providing the requisite resources to the Registry in order to speed up births and deaths registration processes.

“I’m quite impressed with the work you’re doing here. The Births and Deaths started operations in 1912 for births and 1888 for deaths and for the longest period they have been working to keep the records manually.”

“Few countries in Africa have huge depository of these data for such a long time and so we have begun the process over the last few years of digitising their operations.”

“So far, we have done almost 80 per cent of the manual records into electronic form, and by next year, God willing, we’ll finish the entire records,” Dr Bawumia said.

He added that the business processes of the Registry was being automated, adding that Cabinet had approved the Births and Deaths Registry Bill and would soon be laid before Parliament for consideration.

The passage of the Bill into law, he said, would help in decentralising and digitising the operations of the Registry.

“I believe that the digitisation process that has started, when completed next year, would really enhance the efficiency of the operations and authenticity of documents,” he said.

Reverend Addo, on his part, outlined some challenges facing the organisation and asked government to, as a matter of urgency, find a permanent office for the Registry since it had been accommodated in temporary structures for the past 50 years.

The Registry had been re-equipped with new computers and servers but still used the old wiring system, which posed a huge challenge to its operations, he said.

“It’s about time the country invested in a permanent and fitting structures to house all the data that we’re collecting from every corner of the country”.

Rev. Addo said it was important to report births and deaths early to be factored into the national plan and not wait till one urgently needed birth certificate to acquire a passport or death certificate to claim insurance benefit.

“It’s your civic responsibility that once birth occurs, you’re expected to start planning for the child, which has been added to the population and so we need to collect facts and figures and factor that child into national plan.”

“Additionally, when anyone dies, we should know the cause of death so that it will help Public Health Policy and target-setting,” Rev. Addo explained.

The nation required a real time data about the population and population dynamics to ensure proper planning and policy formulation, he added.

Mr Jumah said: “On my first day on the job, I came to meet employees wearing red headbands at the entrance”, adding: “These aggrieved employees had not been paid for over a year”.

“Some staff were taking as low as GH¢250 and even that they could not pay”, he revealed.

According to him, under the new management, things have changed.

He said it all started with an increase in base pay for employees, which, he said, helped in relieving most of the employees from their loan obligations.

“The first thing I did was to increase the base pay of the lowest-paid employees from GH¢250 to GH¢1,000. We have also started an in-house canteen and clinic to meet the basic needs of our workers while at work.”

GIHOC is collaborating with the 1D1F Secretariat to set up 10 factories to make the superior GIHOC brands more available to the citizens of Ghana in order to reduce foreign exchange leakages through importation of goods, which can be produced locally.

Ace Ghanaian actor, John Dumelo, has shared his thoughts on the challenges suffocating the Ghanaian movie industry from growing.

Speaking during an interview on Citi TV, the actor turn politician said the Ghanaian movie industry is not progressing as it should because it is struggling to catch up with how movies can be sold in a digital era since people do not use VCDs again.

“We are lacking transformation onto the technological platforms, ten years ago a lot of people did not know about Netflix, the success of a film is based on the number of CDs you sell.”

“Now everything is online, it left for us to be able to migrate on to the digital platforms,” he told Umaru Sanda, the host.

According to John Dumelo, who stated that the industry is not dead, a lot of people now have smartphones and computers, therefore, it is about time the industry seizes those opportunities to make an income apart from premiering movies at the cinemas.

  • About 1,000 SMEs in the tourism sector to benefit from World Bank support

About 1000 small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) in the country are expected to benefit from a nine-million dollar World Bank grant.

The funds would go into developing tourism sites and destinations, infrastructure and capacity building.

The support is an initial amount from the World Bank to revitalise the tourism and hospitality industry hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The World Tourism Organization (WTO) estimates that about 80 per cent of the small and medium scale enterprises have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide.

Prospective applicants must be individuals and Ghanaian-owned businesses with physical presence in Ghana and registered with the Registrar General’s Department and associations within the tourism industry.

At the launch of the Grant Scheme, under the Ghana Tourism Development Project, in Accra on Wednesday, Mrs Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, said prospective applicants could submit the Expression of Interest from today, June 24 to July 8,2020.

A National Steering Committee has been constituted to review and undertake due diligence of applicants’ proposals to ensure genuine businesses in the tourism sector benefit from the grant.

It is expected that beneficiaries of the grant would invest the funds in developing the aesthetic appearance of tourist sites and improve infrastructure to attract more tourists.

A Grant Management Team has also been constituted to disburse the funds as well as monitor and evaluate the implementation of the various ideas proposed by the beneficiaries.

Prospective applicants are supposed to visit the Ghana Tourism Authority and the sector Ministry’s websites to download and fill the application forms.

Mrs Oteng-Gyasi expressed the hope that the World Bank support would stabilise and revitalise the tourism value chain and generate employment for many Ghanaians.

It would also help protect and preserve the cultural heritage and increase the share of the country’s tourism earnings.

The World Trade Organization estimates that Africa receives only one per cent of the global tourism earnings of $1.7 trillion.

Senior Minister Yaw Osafo-Maafo, who launched the Tourism Enterprise Support programme called for aggressive marketing and promotion of the country’s tourism sector to increase the country’s share of the $1.7 trillion global earnings of the sector.

  • Existing voter ID unacceptable for new EC registration

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) will compile a new voter register without accepting the existing ID cards, 3news.com can confirm.

This was contained in the judgement delivered by the Supreme Court on Thursday, June 25.

There was confusion following the judgement as the plaintiff, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), claimed that its relief to stop the EC from rejecting the existing voter ID cards has been granted.

Its General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, told journalists at the forecourt of the Supreme Court that his party feels “vindicated” by the judgement.

But same document sighted by 3news.com indicated that the Supreme Court was unanimous in its decision to dismiss all but one relief of the NDC.

The EC has thus been asked to compile the new register as per the constitutional instrument (CI) 126.

The Commission has already conducted a pilot exercise of the registration and indicated its “satisfaction” with it.

It has scheduled to start the nationwide exercise on Tuesday, June 30 and end on Thursday, August 6.

  • Two warehouses demolished at Spintex amidst heavy security

Heavy security from the Accra Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service supervised the demolition of two warehouses situated on a 2.59-acre land at Flower Port on the Spintex Road in Accra.

The land, which is said to belong to Yehans International Ghana Limited, has been under litigation with Martey Tsuru Family since 2006, until the Supreme Court on October 24, 2018 ruled in favour of the company.

Accompanied by the police to enforce the ruling of the Court, the taskforce ejected occupants of the two warehouses and pulled down the building.

Counsel for Yehans International Ghana Limited, Kofi Owusu Bosompem, explained to journalists that the case traveled from the High Court, Court of Appeal and finally to the Supreme Court.

He said while the matter was still in court, Daniel McKorley, who is the Chief Executive Officer for MacDan Companies, allegedly took advantage of the litigation and constructed two warehouses on the land.

Lawyer Bosompem explained that when the matter was taken to the police, Mr. McKorley allegedly denied knowledge of the warehouses even though their development was ongoing on the land.

He said they went to the court for writ of possession to carry on the demolition and on March 26, 2020, they notified the occupants of their intention to take possession of the land.

The lawyer said in spite of the notice, they did not bother to put in any claims, hence the decision by the Yehans International Ghana Limited to enforce the ruling with the aid of the police.

  • Give priority to job creation SMEs in disbursement of stimulus package – NGO

The Network of Associations of Registered NGOs in Ghana (NARNGO), is calling on government to give priority to Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) with a focus on creating jobs in the disbursement of its stimulus package.

It also appealed to government to consider development-oriented NGOs and religious bodies that were social service inclined in the disbursement process to help provide relief for the needy and vulnerable in the society.

A statement issued by the group and signed by Kofi Lucas, the Founding Father and President of the association, said with no upper limits and or minimum amounts set with regards to loan sizes, the need, circumstance and repayment capacity would determine the size of loan awarded to beneficiaries.

It said it is therefore imperative that jobs creation, social interventions and the capacity to pay back the loan are prioritised.

“The most important thing government must look out for is any concept that can create jobs, have social interventions and pay back the loan.

“We are of the view that two groups be considered: SMEs that are profit oriented on one hand and development NGOs and religious bodies that are not profit oriented but rather social services inclined on the other hand,” the statement said.

Government, in April, announced a GHC600 million stimulus package targeted at SMEs to cushion them from the effects caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, it announced that it was mobilising partners in the banking sector to support the fund with a supplementary GHC400 million, bringing the total to GHC1billion.

The facility is to be managed by the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), with KPMG as its technical partner.

Beneficiaries of the facility are expected to pay an interest of three per cent, with a one year moratorium before repayments are made over a subsequent two years.

  • COPEC calls for a review of the deregulation policy in fuel pricing

The Government of Ghana in June 2015 put in place a deregulation policy that had the expectation of allowing marketers and importers of petroleum products to set directly their own prices based on import parity costs, taxes, and margins.

However, the Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC Ghana), Duncan Amoah has said that the deregulation policy has only brought benefit to the Government and not the populace and as such the policy needs to be reviewed.

Speaking in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, he explained: “Up till now the benefits we derive from the deregulation is that the country has distanced itself from fuel pricing. The government does not come into debt through the subsidies it places on fuel prices because it has been deregulated.

Today if you go to the market, you will get different prices from different oil companies which have not been of benefit to the ordinary person. If you own a car, you may have the option of where to buy your fuel. But the public transport operator does not have that option.

So you cannot quantify or see the real benefit to the ordinary Ghanaian. This is because transport fares are across the board. For example, if the fare from Madina to Legon is GH?1.00, it is the same price for everyone although someone may buy their fuel at a lesser price than the other.”

He added that the deregulation system had created disparities both in pricing and quality of fuel and that has been of no benefit to the end-user.

Duncan Amoah advised that there needs to be a solution that will allow an average market price for everyone to benefit from.

“I think we will have to have that conversation another day on whether we are to continue with the deregulation or we find a solution so that we can have average market pricing for everybody so that we strike out the dynamics and help everyone in the country”, he added.

  • NASA to name HQ after first black female engineer

Nasa is to name its headquarters in Washington DC after its first black female engineer, Mary Jackson.

Nasa administrator Jim Bridenstine said Jackson had helped to break down barriers for African Americans and women in engineering and technology.

The story of Mary Jackson was told in the 2016 film Hidden Figures. Born in Hampton, Virginia, she died in 2005.

Last year, Nasa renamed the street outside its headquarters as Hidden Figures Way.

“Hidden no more, we will continue to recognise the contributions of women, African Americans, and people of all backgrounds who have made Nasa’s successful history of exploration possible,” Mr Bridenstine said in a statement.

“Mary W Jackson was part of a group of very important women who helped Nasa succeed in getting American astronauts into space,” Mr Bridenstine added.

“Mary never accepted the status quo, she helped break barriers and open opportunities for African Americans and women in the field of engineering and technology.”

The move comes at a time of introspection across the US about historical injustices suffered by African Americans.

The recent death in police custody of George Floyd triggered protests around the world and renewed demands for an end to institutional racism.

Nasa began recruiting some college-educated African American women in the 1940s as “human computers”, but they experienced both racial and gender discrimination at work.

Mary Jackson was recruited in 1951 by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics which was succeeded by Nasa in 1958. She worked under Dorothy Vaughan – whose story was also told in Hidden Figures – in the segregated West Area Computing Unit at Langley, Virginia.

Jackson died in 2005 and in 2019 she was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

Her daughter, Carolyn Lewis, said the family was honoured that Nasa was continuing to celebrate Mary Jackson’s legacy.

“She was a scientist, humanitarian, wife, mother, and trailblazer who paved the way for thousands of others to succeed, not only at Nasa, but throughout this nation,” she said.

  • Nigerian High Commission saga: Don’t spare perpetrators – Kweku Baako

Seasoned journalist, Kweku Baako Jnr has reprimanded the orchestrators of the demolition of a building at the residence of the Nigerian High Commissioner in Accra.

Some armed men stormed the premises of the Nigerian High Commission and demolished a building near completion.

Head of security at the High Commission, Emmanuel Kabutey noted that the leader of the team that demolished the building told them they were acting under the behest of the National Security and that “if any of us try, he will clear us off”.

Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, the Paramount Chief of the Osu Traditional Area, has stated the Nigerian High Commission has trespassed on a parcel of land belonging to the Osu Stool.

In a press release, he stated the land in question is not a state land, therefore, “it is only the Stool that has the mandate to grant lease be it expired or otherwise”.

However, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested two persons in connection with the demolition.

“The Criminal Investigations Department in the course of investigation on Monday, 22nd June, 2020, arrested two persons involved in the demolition of a building on the premises of the Nigerian High Commission in Accra.”

Addressing the issue, Kweku Baako says the perpetrators should be prosecuted and be charged to rebuild the demolished structure.

Kweku Baako released some documents revealing that the Lands Commission allocated the portion of land to the Nigerian High Commission in 2000 and 18 years later, the Commission also released the land to GLICO; hence stressing there is confusion over the land ownership, nonetheless it was not in the hands of the Osu Traditional Area to demolish the structure.

To him, their action has subjected the image of the country to international ridicule.

Meanwhile, President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has apologized to the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari over the incident.

“It’s an embarrassment to the country and to government. No wonder, the President has apologized…and the Minister of Foreign Affairs also went to the embassy and apologized. It’s unwarranted, needless. It’s subjected our international image to a certain level of ridicule…They must be apprehended and arraigned before court. Afterwards, they must be billed and do reconstruction at their own expense,” Kweku Baako said on ”Kokrokoo” on Peace FM.

  • Coronavirus: GEDA engages Zoomlion to disinfect Opera Square

The Ghana Electrical Dealers Association (GEDA) on Wednesday engaged Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL) to disinfect its business space at Opera Square, Accra, also known as Cowlane.

The exercise, which started around 7:00 a.m., saw ZGL deploy one of its boom atomisers together with a disinfection crew with knapsack spraying machines to disinfect the area.

The crew disinfected the two lorry terminals at the Opera Square area, open spaces along the Old AMA traffic light, Judicial Service, the Ghana Post Office, and the Rawlings Park areas, and the Cowlane Central Mosque. Also disinfected were about 400 shops and stores at Opera Square.

Speaking to a cross-section of journalists after the exercise, the 2nd Vice-Chair, GEDA, Hajia Munia Buari, lamented that the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has not only slowed down their business but dealt a devastating blow to them.

“Honestly, business has been very slow because a lot more people now do not come to trade with us due to Covid-19,” she bemoaned.

In addition, Hajia Buari said members of GEDA had also not been able to import electrical materials from China because of travel restrictions brought about by the Covid-19 disease.

That, coupled with the low patronage of their business, has dealt a severe blow to GEDA members, she stressed.

She explained that GEDA engaged Zoomlion to undertake the exercise to protect their members and also keep their customers who come there to trade with them safe from the pandemic.

“And even before the announcement of the partial lockdown in some parts of the country, GEDA had ensured that all its members religiously implemented the Covid-19 preventive protocols. All shops/stores under our umbrella association were to have Veronica buckets together with liquid soaps and alcohol-based sanitisers to be used by them and their customers. And, I must confess that our members have fully complied with these protocols,” she said.

The 2nd vice-chair of GEDA, however, indicated that effective Thursday, June 25, the association will enforce the wearing of nose masks.

“In fact, any of our members who fails to comply with this directive would not be allowed to trade in the area!” she cautioned.

She disclosed that the association had also put in a request for Covid-19 stimulus package for its members.

“And if this package is made available to us, we believe it will cushion members of GEDA from the harsh brunt of the Covid-19 pandemic on our business,” Hajia Buari expressed.

In a brief remark, the General Manager, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Greater Accra Region, Mr Ernest Morgan Acquah, explained that the essence of the exercise was to keep the Opera Square which is the trading hub of GEDA members safe and clean from the attack of the Covid-19 disease.

However, he contended that the disinfection was only one of the measures in the war against Covid-19.

Against this backdrop, he entreated members of GEDA to unfailingly observe the other Covid-19 safety protocols which included regular washing of hands under a running water, practising social/physical distancing and using alcohol-based hand sanitisers.

The adherence of these protocols together with the disinfection will help protect GEDA members and its customers from the virus attack, he advised.
