  • Huge challenges exist in cocoa sector despite Ghana being second largest producer Minister

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto has said at the launch of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) $600m syndicated loan facility on 23rd June 2020, that despite Ghana priding itself as the second-largest cocoa-producing country in the world, huge challenges exist in the sector.

Key among these challenges, he said, are low productivity resulting from aged and diseased farms, low prices of cocoa on the world market, and low per capita consumption of cocoa products.

“In an effort to curtail, these challenges, we instituted a number of Productivity Enhancement Programmes (PEPs) and other policy interventions. Among these are: Re-launching of the Cocoa Diseases and Pest Control Programme (CODAPEC); Enhancement of the National Cocoa Rehabilitation Programme with new incentives to landowners and farmhands; Introduction of a National Hand Pollination Programme; Introduction of a Mass Prunning Programme; Piloting of a Cocoa Farm Irrigation Programme; Launching of a National Cocoa Consumption campaign to make cocoa a household food in Ghana, and; Landmark introduction of Living Income Differential (LID) pricing mechanism to boost the incomes of farmers.”

He further stated that apart from the LID which will be fully implemented in October 2020, the benefits of all the other interventions are already been enjoyed by cocoa farmers across the country.

“In view of the capital requirements for a successful implementation of these interventions, Ghana Cocoa Board began negotiations with the AfDB and other international bodies to provide funding for these laudable programmes.

“As has been mentioned earlier by the Chief Executive, the African Development Bank (AfDB), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) including Credit Suisse AG, Development Bank of South Africa the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Limited and other International agencies, signed a $600 million syndicated receivables-backed loan facility with Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) in February 2020 to facilitate the ongoing Productivity Enhancement Programs (PEPs) in Ghana. $200 million of this amount has already been released.”

  • Form cooperatives Government to all cocoa farmers

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto has encouraged all cocoa farmers in Ghana to form cooperatives.

Currently, he said, more than 3000 farmer groups across the country have registered with the Department of Cooperatives and are working closely with the Cocoa Diseases and Pest Control Programme (CODAPEC) /Hitech Unit as well as officers of the Cocoa Health and Extension Division (CHED) in the districts to promote effective and quality services that will help increase productivity and sustain the cocoa industry.

Speaking at the launch of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) $600m syndicated loan facility on 23rd June 2020, Dr Afriyie Akoto said : “We are also highly focused on increasing domestic processing and warehousing facilities to stimulate local consumption. The price volatility of cocoa on the world market requires us to, among other interventions, increase our domestic processing and consumption. The President is keen on the consumption drive with numerous calls on all Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of consuming cocoa daily.

“Amidst the current Corona Virus pandemic, I strongly believe that increased intake of cocoa with high concentration of flavanols and its associated components will help significantly in fighting the disease, which has caused serious devastation the world over.”

“In our effort to ensure the provision of quality extension services and give equally farmers equal access to all our interventions, we have rolled out a Cocoa Management System (CMS) which will enable us have adequate and accurate data of our farmers/farms, Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs) Input suppliers and other players on the cocoa value chain.

“ A full implementation of the CMS will not only give farmers easy access to farm inputs but also make it easier for them to access funding from the local financial market for their operations.

“We have also encouraged farmers to form cooperatives. Currently, more than 3000 farmer groups across the country have registered with the Department of Cooperatives and are working closely with the CODAPEC/Hitech Unit as well as officers of the Cocoa Health and Extension Division (CHED) in the districts to promote effective and quality services that will help increase productivity and sustain the cocoa industry.”

  • Dont invite foreign-based players who struggle for game time – Otto Pfister urges Akonnor

Former Black Stars coach, Otto Pfister has urged current coach Charles Akonnor to give local players equal opportunities in the national team as the foreign-based players.

Local-based players have struggled to get into the national team in recent years with the common excuse being that the domestic league is not competitive enough compared to the foreign leagues.

However, Pfister, who managed the Black Stars between 1992 and 1993, believes local players who play regularly should not be overlooked for players abroad who struggle for game time.

He admitted it is a common mistake most foreign coaches make on the continent.

“Some foreign coaches make mistakes in Africa, they call players from Europe who are not regular players,” he said in an interview with Citi Sports.

“But it is better to call up local players who play regularly and are in form than a player who is in Europe and has never played for his club,” he added.

Otto Pfister named 10 locally-based players in his squad for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 1992 as Black Stars finished second.

Former Asante Kotoko player, Frimpong Manso has asked management of the Porcupine Warriors to develop a medium and long term plan for players recruited into the team.

The Kumasi based club has failed to live up to expectations in recent years and their former employer believes the club can get back on its feet with a proper plan.

Manso, who played for eight consecutive years for Kotoko indicated that the team had consistency because many of the players played together for quite a long time but is of the view that the terrain has changed.

“The players should be made to sign a minimum of three -year contract, and depending on performance, the contract should be extended or abrogated. They should not recruit players just for the sake of recruitment. Only tried and tested players should be recruited” he said.

  • Uganda opposition to defy ban on campaign rallies

Uganda’s opposition figure Robert Kyangulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has said he will hold campaign rallies despite a ban by the electoral commission.

The People Power Movement leader said President Yoweri Museveni was using the coronavirus pandemic as an excuse to prevent opposition leaders from reaching voters.

The east African nation will hold a general election in January 2021 and the electoral commission has banned mass campaign rallies to protect voters against coronavirus. It encouraged aspiring candidates to campaign through the media

President Yoweri Museveni, who is serving his fifth term of office, is eligible for a fresh term but has not announced whether he will vie.

Bobi Wine said the electoral commission’s ban on rallies was not genuine.

“No Ugandan should be fooled into believing that Museveni is doing this for the safety of Ugandans. What Museveni fears is the people,” he said.

He said the government was using the pandemic to prevent a free and fair election process.

The banning of campaign rallies means that the opposition would be disadvantaged as radio is the most popular media in Uganda and most private stations are owned by politicians in the ruling party.

  • Coronavirus is a satanic agenda to prevent people from going to church – Bishop Agyinasare

The General Overseer of the Perez Chapel, Bishop Agyinasare, says the novel coronavirus which has placed considerable limitation on the movement of people is a satanic agenda to prevent Christians from going to church.

In a video sighted by Ghanaweb.com, the man of God said it is baffling to him, that people are not afraid to queue to vote in political party primaries, neither are they afraid to queue to register for the national identity cards, or even throng the markets which are usually always crowded, but are afraid to go to church, where they have agreed to practice social distancing and all safety protocols.

He advised Christians to be wise, because the devil is trying to use the pandemic to confuse them to stay away from church

“I was speaking to Papa Duncan Williams just the other day, and he said this coronavirus is not just normal. It is a satanic agenda to make sure that people will not go to church again. Is it not amazing to you that people are ok to go and vote in primaries, they are not afraid they will get coronavirus, they are ok to go to the market, they are not afraid they will get the coronavirus, sit in trotro, sit in a taxi, they are ok to go everywhere, but when it comes to church, it is like at the gate of the church we are distributing coronavirus”, he said.

    Background

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on May 31, 2020, in his address to the nation on measures taken to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic, and ease the restrictions imposed on its citizenry, announced that religious services can resume.

The president said, “with effect from Friday, June 5, 2020, we will begin stage one of the process of easing restrictions. An abridged format of religious activities can commence.

“25% attendance, with a maximum number of 100 congregants, can worship at a time in church or at the mosque, with a mandatory one metre of social distancing between congregants,” he stated.

The president also said that the maximum hours for the service should be one hour which according to him, would help prevent the spread of the virus as Ghanaians continue to adhere to the safety protocols.

After the announcement, most churches issued press releases saying they would still remain closed, until the coronavirus is effectively dealt with before they open their doors to the public and their members.

Ghana’s confirmed cases of COVID-19 is now 14, 568 with 10,907 recoveries and 95 deaths.

  • Nasara targets 40 percent Zongo votes for NPP in Ashanti

The Nasara wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region is targeting to secure at least 40 per cent of votes in the Ashanti Region for the governing NPP in the 2020 general elections.

Alhaji Saalim Bamba, the Regional Nasara Coordinator who is leading the audacious agenda, believes the target was achievable with the level of development projects that Zongos have benefitted under this administration.

He was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi after a day’s training for Constituency Nasara Coordinators, as part of a project to build their capacities to sensitize Zongo communities on safety protocols of the coronavirus.

The project dubbed, “We Care Campaign” seeks to empower Nasara Coordinators to lead the campaign against the coronavirus amidst election activities, and it is being funded by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

Alhaji Bamba said Nasara was poised to maximize Zongo votes on the back of the massive infrastructural development currently ongoing in most Zongo communities in the region.

“We the Nasara wing of the party want to lead the NPP to victory in 2020 and beyond because we are in charge of Zongo and settler communities where NDC gets most of their votes”, he pointed out

He said the chances of the NPP retaining power would increase significantly if Nasara succeeds in securing about 40 per cent of votes in the Zongo communities.

The President, he noted, had developed Zongo and settler communities than any other President since the fourth republic and was convinced that his achievements would attract unprecedented votes in Zongo communities.

“He is the only President who has established a ministry dedicated to facilitating the development of Zongos and inner cities as well as a fund to execute the development agenda”, he praised the President.

According to the regional Nasara Coordinator, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo had redeemed virtually all the promises he made to the people of Zongo and entreated them to reward him in the December elections.

He said the Ashanti Region had had its fair share of the Zongo Development Fund projects with about 50 projects including Information Communication Technology (ICT) centers, schools, toilet facilities and mechanized boreholes across the region.

  • I was sexually abused by my step dad – Attorney Juanita Headley

Sexual abuse and rape seems to be a daunting issue not only for 3rd world countries but all around the world. Twitter in the last few weeks has been filled with several rape allegations towards men including some prominent celebrities in Ghana and abroad.

Nana Adwoa Sarkodie on her weekly Instagram Live sessions hosted Juanita Headley, a US Attorney, Author and Founder of Changing Cases currently residing in the UK.

Juanita is an outstanding sexual abuse survivor who shares her bizarre story of abuse to audiences across the globe.

She described the first encounter at the age of four (4) when her step dad started grooming her by tickling. This incident unfortunately unfolded into severe cases because her mother turned a deaf ear to her complaints.

“My step dad started tickling me when I was four and I reported to my mother. She told me ‘don’t let it happen again’ and told my step dad ‘don’t let it happen again’. As an adult, I believe that’s why I did not confide in her again after it went from tickling to attempted rape. He will come to my room and try to rape me but was never successful because when he tries to penetrate, I toss and turn.” She said.

“My step dad was an alcoholic but I want to be clear that being an alcoholic does not make one a pedophile. Being alcoholic only gave him the courage and confidence to do what he wanted to do and wouldn’t have had the guts to do it if he were sober” she added.

According to Juanita, the abuse continued until she was thirteen (13) and her family still did nothing to curb the situation. She confided in her female cousins who then told their mum (her aunt), but this also was to no avail.

She urged society not to judge promiscuous children because most of them turn out that way due to being victims of sexual abuse. “If a child discloses sexual abuse, it’s really important to believe them and reassure them. Create a free space for them to be able to share with you” she insisted.

By God’s grace, Juanita successfully overcame the trauma and has decided to use her story to inspire others.

“I am convinced that all things work together for our good, that your past doesn’t have to dictate your future and that’s why I wrote my book (Can You Keep a Secret?). People perish for the lack of knowledge. If I can educate, empower and encourage people on the topic of sexual abuse, on human trafficking, on exploitation, then this could be a different safer world” she said.

When asked whether she had forgiven her step dad, she explained that he turned out to be her best friend because of the grooming from an early age. She even cried at his funeral even though he was a pedophile. However, she feels there might be some form of unforgiveness towards her mother who did nothing to help the situation.

She aims to build bakeries around the world to employ certain criminals and give them a second chance. “As a Christian, I believe every person deserves a second chance including my step dad. I believe in prison time but I believe in second chances and as a result of that, I believe in empowering people regardless of their past sins, mistakes or criminal activities.

She further advised people struggling with certain immoral behaviours to do their best in resisting the temptation. “If you’re an alcoholic, you don’t walk on the streets where there are bars” she said.

In a response to a question about pastors and spiritual leaders who are sometimes the perpetrators of sexual abuse, Juanita said “We are human first and Christian second. As a result, we do screw up, sin, make mistakes and do illegal things. We are the church, it’s not the building and that is unique to that person. Priests are not pedophiles, people are. People are pedophiles and they are sometimes priests”.

Finally, she encouraged everyone who has suffered any form of abuse to speak about their experiences. “Every experience we have, there is a purpose for that. If you have been abused, you’re innocent. You’re not a victim, you’re a survivor. Get rid of the shame, take your story and inspire others.

The discussion was simply amazing and transformational. You can watch the full interview via Nana Adwoa Sarkodie on Instagram or YouTube.

Two suits have already been filed against the Commission over the matter.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and one Mr Mark Takyi-Banson, a private citizen, have both gone to court seeking to stop the EC from going ahead with a new electoral roll for the December 2020 general elections.

  • Minister of Environment gives one-week ultimatum to Rider Steel over pollution

The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation has given Rider Steel Company Limited a one-week ultimatum to provide the Ministry with a roadmap to address its poor pollution management.

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the Minister, said the failure of the Indian owned company to sit with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to draw a workable roadmap would lead to severe sanctions.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng gave the order after paying an unannounced visit to four companies in the Tema Freezone Enclave. The other companies were United Steel Company, Success Aluminium Limited and MND Metals Company Limited.

The Minister expressed disappointment at the level of pollution the company spewed into the environment as dark smoke was seen billowing with metal dust, virtually choking and reducing visibility on the factory premises.

He said his outfit had received several reports from other companies in the enclave on the consistent and reckless manner in which pollutants were emitted into the air by Rider Steel which informed his decision to pay the surprise visit after sending some officials earlier to confirm.

He said it was urgent to get the road map from them as bad smoke was being emitted from their chimney, adding that he also observed that the chamber for the melting of the metals was also faulty.

“The filtration system is not working properly and the dust from the filter is not well collected as there is a leakage in the receptacle”.

He added that “I feel like closing the factory down, but apart from seeing that they are making efforts to change the filters, we are also not in normal times because of the COVID-19, they should sit with the EPA and bring a written roadmap for the correction of all the lapses”.

He reminded them that Ghana would not compromise on the pollution of her environment and the health of workers, adding that the volume of fumes and metal dust in and around the company could lead to lung infections among the workers.

For the United Steel, he recounted how he sent his officials there, after some reports adding that he was however impressed with what he saw as there was a tremendous improvement from the reports he received.

He, however, urged them to fully correct and contain smokes emanating from the back of the factory to other companies saying he would be back to inspect it.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said while he visited Success Aluminium to find out the effect of the operations of the steel companies on their operations, he realized that the company itself had issues with pollution as workers of the factory had fine metal dust coating their entire bodies.

He added that workers were also being housed on the premises which illegal, saying the relevant authorities would be contacted to ensure that the practise was stopped.

Mr TP Patnaik, General Manager of Rider Steel, responding to questions from the Minister, said they were in the process of changing their filters to prevent the level of pollution the entourage witnessed indicating engineers who were to work on the machines could not come into the country due to the COVID-19.

  • Road Safety Authority seeks public inputs on LI for enforcement of road safety Act

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has begun a nationwide consultative meeting on the drafting of a Legislative Instrument (LI) that will regulate road transport operations in the country.

When passed, the LI would enable the NRSA to enforce standards, to promote sanity and reduced crashes on the roads.

The LI would advance realistic enforcement of provisions in the National Road Safety Act, 2019 (Act 993) which established the Authority.

According to Mr David Adonteng, the Director of Planning at the NRSA, the consultative meetings were aimed at collating views and creating opportunities for stakeholders in the road sector to make contributions into the draft.

It also created an opportunity for the Authority to sensitize stakeholders on the draft before the bill was sent to parliament.

Mr Adonteng was speaking at the Ahafo Regional stakeholders consultative meeting held at Goaso on Tuesday, and attended by transport unions, traditional rulers, road sector agencies, Vulcanizers, drivers and security services.

He noted that despite intensified public education, road accidents kept on increasing in the country, saying as an Authority, it would be in a better position to regulate and enforce standards in the transport industry and minimise crashes.

Under the LI, the NRSA among other things, will facilitate and enforce standards in road infrastructure, train and certify vulcanizers, as well as monitor activities of road sector agencies.

Mr Kwasi Agyenim Boateng, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Manager of the NRSA, expressed the hope that the public would interrogate the draft LI and make inputs to help fine-tune and facilitate its passage.

  • Make timely public disclosures of debt service payments World Bank to governments

President of the World Bank Group, David Malpass, has said there is the need to ensure that detailed and timely public disclosure of debt service payments that may be deferred is made.

According to him, this will enable stakeholders—governments as well as the private sector and the public at large—to keep track of the progress being made in the implementation of DSSI while highlighting the growing importance of debt transparency.

“Today we are disclosing more disaggregated data in the DRS than in the past and in the future, we will be seeking support from borrowing countries on a mechanism to disclose even more granular information on debt payments,” he said in an article.

He added: “This, of course, is only a start—and our goal is to increase the breadth and quality of debt data available here and elsewhere. Going forward, borrowing countries and creditors need to achieve sustained progress on five key principles to improve debt transparency and improve investment flows:

    “Spell out loan contract terms and payment schedules; Full disclosure of the stock of public and publicly guaranteed debt, SOE liabilities, and debt-like instruments;

    “Enable borrowers to seek relief from excessive confidentiality clauses so they can proceed with more transparent data reporting;

“Promote effective and prudent use of collateral and liens in sovereign borrowing; and Insist that borrowers and lenders avoid violations of legal requirements of other creditors, such as negative pledge clauses.

“The transparency of all government financial commitments and investments is a key step in creating an attractive investment climate and could make substantial progress this year to deliver better outcomes for people in developing countries.”

  • NDC should stop criticizing Nana Addo; he has done well – Nana Aba Anamoah

Nana Aba Anamoah is a veteran and popular journalist in Ghana. The young journalist shared her point of view in an interview with KSM.

She said that the National Democratic Congress should emulate the good works from the New Patriotic Party and stop lying to the general public that, Nana Addo hasn’t done anything for the citizens.

She started that even if the ruling government hasn’t done anything for the country, free education is enough to declare him as a good president.

The literacy rate in Ghana is very low so for NPP to introduce free education for the people of Ghana, it will make people become educated and the level of illiteracy in Ghana will reduce drastically.

Some people in Ghana are totally living in poverty so the introduction of free education has relieved parents who have been struggling to pay their school fees.

She also added that it would be better to have over 100 students in the classroom than to see children on the street selling and indulging in dubious businesses

  • Burundi restores role of PM after 22 years

Burundi’s parliament has approved Alain Guillaume Bunyoni as prime minister, the first person to take on the role in 22 years.

The position has been restored by newly elected President Evariste Ndayishimiye, who was sworn into office last week – two months sooner than planned as his predecessor, Pierre Nkurunziza, died earlier this month.

MPs also approved Prosper Bazombanza as the new vice-president.

The 60-year-old has served as vice-president before – under Mr. Nkurunziza between 2014 and 2015.

For the last five year, Mr. Bunyoni has been security minister and is a very influential figure in the ruling CNDD-FDD party.

The 48-year-old, who will be in charge of the cabinet, was a close ally of Mr Nkurunziza during his 15 years in power.

The new prime minister is under US government sanctions for his suspected role in violence and human rights violations during political unrest in 2015.

Burundi pulled out of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2017 amid ongoing investigations into the unrest that followed a failed coup attempt.

  • AC Milan-target Myron Boadu makes big statement on his future

Dutch-born Ghanaian forward Myron Boadu has shot down reports linking him away from AZ Alkmaar, saying he will remain at the club beyond the summer window.

Boadu, 19, was in lethal form for AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Eredivisie last season.

The forward notched up 14 goals in the league, adding another eight assists along the way.

His form has caught the attention of several elite European clubs including Napoli, AC Milan, Arsenal and Barcelona.

However, Boadu says he will stay with the Red and White lads for next season though he desires to play in the Premier League.

“I think I will also play for AZ next season. “I’m just focusing on AZ right now,” he says. “I don’t know anything about interest yet,” he said as quoted by NOS.

“AZ knows what my ambitions are. Becoming a champion here and I also aspire a step to the Premier League. But whether that is next year or not, that will have to show the future. I still have a contract until 2023, so I think I’m just playing at AZ.”
