  • Rwanda woman fighting against expensive periods

Blandine Umuziranenge is determined to make affordable sanitary pads for girls and women in Rwanda.

A packet of 10 pads costs around $1 (£0.80) in Rwanda. Despite the government promising to drop vale added tax (VAT) in December, the prices have not yet fallen.

“I wanted a sustainable, safe and affordable solution for us,” she told the BBC.

Her organisation, Kosmotive, started making reusable sanitary pads three years ago called KosmoPads.

“After each use, the pad can be washed and reused. One can last for two years,” Ms Umuziranenge said.

A pack of five sells at between $3 and $6, saving users money over the long term.

Health experts warn there are risks in reusing a piece of cloth during menstruation, but Ms Umuziranenge says the KosmoPads are made with menstrual hygiene in mind.

Production has slowed since the outbreak of coronavirus as the cost of importing materials from China has tripled.

  • Novak Djokovic tests positive for coronavirus

World number one Novak Djokovic has become the latest tennis player to test positive for Covid-19.

It comes after Grigor Dimitrov, Borna Coric and Viktor Troicki all revealed they had coronavirus after playing at Djokovic’s Adria Tour competition.

Djokovic, 33, played fellow Serb Troicki in the first event in Belgrade.

Great Britain’s Andy Murray said the positive tests were a “lesson for us”, while Australian Nick Kyrgios called playing a “bone-headed decision”.

There have been no ATP Tour events since February because of the global pandemic and the Adria Tour, which is not an ATP Tour event, was one of the first competitions to be staged since then.

The first leg in Serbia attracted 4,000 fans, and players were later pictured dancing close together in a Belgrade nightclub.

Bulgaria’s Dimitrov played Croatia’s Coric on Saturday in the second leg in Zadar, Croatia.

With Croatia easing lockdown measures, players were not obliged to observe social distancing rules and were seen embracing at the net at the end of their matches.

Pictures on the tournament’s social media site from Friday showed Dimitrov playing basketball with Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Marin Cilic, while he also put his arm around Coric before their match.

Zverev, Cilic and Andrey Rublev, who also played, have tested negative, but suggested they will all now self-isolate for up to 14 days.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo breaks Serie A record in Juventus victory

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo overtook Rui Costa to become the leading Portuguese scorer in Serie A history on Monday.

Ronaldo slotted the first-half penalty down the middle in Juve’s 2-0 win over Bologna, a result that saw the Bianconeri move four points clear at the top of the table.

The goal was Ronaldo’s 22nd in Serie A this season, one more than the 21 he managed in his debut campaign in Turin following his move from Real Madrid in 2018.

In reaching 43 goals, the 35-year-old also moved beyond Rui Costa as the Portuguese player with the most goals in Italy’s top flight.

Rui Costa spent eight years in Serie A, playing for Fiorentina and then Milan between 1994 and 2006.

Former Manchester United star Ronaldo remains the top Portuguese scorer in Premier League history having scored 84 times in 196 appearances.

He is the also the leading Portuguese scorer in La Liga history having registered 311 goals in 292 appearances for Real Madrid, where he is the all-time leading scorer.

Only Ronaldo’s great personal rival Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has scored more La Liga goals.

Ronaldo has been criticised recently after missing a penalty against Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-final and struggling to have an impact in the final versus Napoli.

Former Italy international Luca Toni described Ronaldo’s performance in the last four of the Coppa Italia as ‘average’.

“I saw the whole Juventus team in difficulty, even Cristiano Ronaldo, who looked like an average player in what was a very slow match,” Toni told Rai Sport after the Milan clash.

“You expect a big performance from him but he looked like he was experiencing physical difficulties he couldn’t even dribble past a man.”

Ronaldo’s sister took to Instagram after the match to stick up for her brother, stating that he can’t always be expected to win matches on his own.

She said: “What else can you do? It is what it is and my darling can’t work miracles alone. I can’t understand how they played like that. Anyway, keep your head up. You can’t do more, my king.”

The Coppa Italia final loss marks the only time in Ronaldo’s career that he has lost two successive finals, having been defeated by Lazio in the Supercoppa Italiana at the tail end of 2019.

  • Human trials for coronavirus vaccine start in South Africa

Human trials for a Covid-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University are beginning in South Africa and in Brazil.

Some 2,000 people in South Africa will be involved in what is widely considered to be one of the earliest and most advanced trials for a vaccine to tackle the pandemic.

The first doses of the vaccine are being administered in Johannesburg this week.

South Africa has been chosen, not just for its expertise in this field, but because Covid-19 is now spreading fast here.

That makes it far easier for scientists to find a community at immediate risk of infection, and to then tell whether this British vaccine is effective.

Similar tests are already underway in the UK, but the infection rate there is slowing. Hence the move, not just to South Africa, but to Brazil too, where 5,000 people will be involved in the vaccine trial.

  • South African court cancels Jacob Zuma’s arrest warrant

The High Court in Pietermaritzburg has cancelled an arrest warrant against South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma after his lawyer handed in a doctor’s letter confirming his ill-health.

The arrest warrant was issued in February after Mr Zuma failed to appear in court for a hearing.

His legal team had said the former president had gone to Cuba for a medical procedure, but the court was not satisfied with the explanation.

Pre-trial proceedings began on Tuesday regarding the corruption trial in which Mr Zuma is accused of receiving bribes from French arms company Thales 20 years ago.

The hearing has now been postponed to September.

  • ‘Anger’ over racist act by officer against Ghanaian-Canadian ladies

The blatant racist attitude by a Bylaw Enforcement officer, towards two young Ghanaian-Canadian ladies in Toronto recently, has incurred the wrath of the leadership of the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO).

The racially charged confrontation between the City Bylaw Enforcement Officer and the two women, Debra Ampon and Eva Amo-Mensah, which was captured on video is making airwaves on mainstream media in Toronto.

In the video, the Officer who is white is seen confronting the young Black ladies for trespassing while ignoring some white people for the same alleged trespassing at the Centennial Park in Etobicoke in the City of Toronto.

The Officer was also alleged to have said that, because the black ladies were trespassing, he could have shot them.

The mayor of the City of Toronto, John Tory, has come out openly to order an independent objective investigation into the allegation.

Meanwhile, the Ghanaian-Canadian community in Toronto under the leadership of Emmanuel Duodu has written to the Mayor and the Chief of Law Enforcement in Toronto strongly protesting the anti-black racist behaviour of the Bylaw Enforcement Officer towards the two Ghanaian-Canadian women.

The letter signed by the President of GCAO reads:

On behalf of the Ghanaian-Canadian community, I want to express our profound shock, dismay and frustration about the alleged anti-black racist behaviour meted out to Debra Ampon and Eva Amo-Mensah at Cenntenial Park in Etobicoke by a Bylaw enforcement officer.

With the recent events in the US including the death of George Floyd, we had hoped that our law enforcement officers would make every effort to avoid engaging in acts of anti-black racism. Our youth are still reeling from the events in the U.S and some of the incidents in and around Toronto. They are literally frightened and at times do not feel safe in their neighbourhoods.

We appreciate, Mayor John Tory speaking about this incident and supports the efforts to ensure justice is served. Since this incident, our community is distraught and shaken by the blatant display of anti-black racism and these young women of our Toronto Ghanaian community feel they do not belong.

While this case is being investigated, we ask for justice to address the emotional and psychological trauma these young women are currently going through.

The Ghanaian-Canadian community strongly registers its displeasure at the systematic racism in Canada that threatens the unity and development of our multicultural (mosaic) society.

We can no longer be silent while our youth are subjected to anti-black racism and injustice.

  • Coronavirus: Ghanaian community, footballers in Kuwait wants to be airlifted by government

Stephen Anokye Badu, a former defender of Ghana Premier League (GPL) Aduana Stars has made a passionate appeal to the government to intervene to airlift Ghanaians based in Kuwait and Iraq to Ghana, following the untold hardship the COVID 19 pandemic has brought on them.

“Many of us are facing hardship and struggling to live our normal daily lives” following the imposition of coronavirus restrictions in that country.

He said the Iraq government this year had airlifted some 245 Ghanaian nationals back to their home country as, part of their annual programme to return foreigners, but with the outbreak of the virus and subsequent lockdown some of them who were encountering difficulties never got that chance.

“These also involved those whose documents have expired and wanted to renew them, or in one way or the other were facing hardship and challenges regarding their stay in that country,” he added.

Anokye Badu popularly known as ‘Atronie’ who spoke on behalf of the group told the Ghana News Agency(GNA) in an interview that the restrictions had halted business activities and all sporting events making many Ghanaians to lose their jobs and businesses.

“Personally, due to the biting effects of the lockdown in that country, I have made an effort by calling Ghana’s Ambassador in that country and have held discussions with him over the matter. He asked me to contact a woman who works at the Airport for assistance.

“When I called, the person told me unless they get a total of 150 Ghanaians who want to return, they will not get a plane for us. She didn’t get the 150 people she needed so we are still locked up,” he stated.

The former Aduana Star’s player indicated that following the expiration and termination of his 10 – month contract with his Tadamon Sporting Club last month, officials of the Club withdrew all contract obligations including payment of rent charges.

“They paid my apartment rent charges up to last month when my contract ended and have made it clear to me that they won’t continue with the payment. I should take that burden up for myself. But the situation is very difficult for me here. We are locked down, and i don’t do any work to earn extra money to pay rent charges.

“I just want to return home,” he stated.

I can’t survive with the little money on me now that my contract has ended. And we don’t know when exactly restrictions will be lifted too,” he remarked.

He expressed grave concern about the way the Ghana Embassy in Kuwait had handled the issue and appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to act quickly and respond to their distress call, adding that things were getting worse by the day.

On his future plans, he said he would be willing to play outside Ghana if the COVID 19 situation normalises but ready to join the local league as well.

  • Affordability of smartphones crucial in coronavirus fight

The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced how important connectivity is in the modern world. As it has become more challenging to communicate directly, the use of ICT has become even more critical for the dissemination of information by government, experts, and the media. Key to digital communication is the phone especially the smartphone.

The smartphone allows people to stay in touch with their friends and families, receive important information, and educate themselves during these tough times.

Smartphones may become even more crucial when the outbreak is brought under control. However, the cost of handsets is a significant barrier to mobile Internet adoption and use and this is not the fault of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Low-cost devices are often out of the reach of those in poverty, which is a problem considering that these devices can be key enablers for escaping poverty.

Research in countries like Tanzania and India found that the extremely poor those who earn less than $2 per day would have to spend 16% of their annual income just to purchase an average-priced smartphone.

For people who are struggling to eat on a daily basis, using this percentage of their income is not a rational option. However, device manufacturers cannot offer phones at a significantly more affordable rate because they have costs of their own to manage.

For this reason, it is necessary to develop business models which ensure that those in poverty can own smartphones. Given the nature of the COVID-19 crisis, there is no better time to develop such business models and get more South Africans connected.

    Smartphones are not a luxury

One of the reasons smartphones are so expensive in South Africa, and Africa as a whole, is that they incur high taxes. In fact, import taxes and duties can reach as high as 50% of the total device cost in some African countries. This is partially due to high costs for device transportation particularly to emerging markets.

Additionally, storage, warehousing, and inventory management all provide significant additional costs. A simple way to reduce these tax costs could be by ceasing to class smartphones as luxury items.

Smartphones have become more than a luxury they are now crucial sources of information and connectivity and not having one is a significant barrier to economic prosperity.

If luxury tariffs were no longer due on smartphones, it would make it possible to slash smartphone prices considerably making them more accessible to more African citizens.

This would be particularly beneficial to the development and distribution of locally-manufactured smartphones offering significant opportunities for economic growth.

Another strategy could be to abolish the taxation and duties placed upon smartphones below a certain value. This would result in citizens being able to purchase these cheap smartphones, while still boosting government revenue through airtime and data bundles, as well as income from other mobile income streams.

    Strategies for smartphone proliferation

While reducing the taxation on smartphones is an obvious way to make smartphones more affordable, other strategies can also reduce the cost of smartphones for low-income citizens. One such strategy includes government getting involved in parts of the value chain including marketing, distribution, and retail.

This would reduce the costs directly incurred by smartphone makers by reducing the number of players within the supply chain.

Another strategy would be government assisting through subsidies or donations to NGOs and other entities meaning government would be subsidising the cost of devices for those who need them most.

These and other strategies should be discussed by government, and strategies should be undertaken to facilitate the increase in citizens who have smartphones, and by extension, access to the digital economy.

Some examples of how governments can assist through subsidies or other means include:

Argentina Provided asset financing to 8 million citizens to switch from 2G feature phones to 4G smartphones.

Columbia Allocated $90 million over three years to a policy which included subsidies for low-income citizens for data and smartphones.

Malaysia Launched a national program to encourage youth to purchase 3G-enabled smartphones with a rebate on certain phones reducing the cost by 40%.

Pakistan government used funds to give smartphones to 30,000 low-income women.

    Smartphone uptake is important

ICT expert Charley Lewis told MyBroadband that the drive for smartphone uptake in South Africa is important for consumers as those who do not have these devices are deprived of access to much of the Internet and its benefits such as highly useful apps.

“If pricing of entry-level smartphones can be kept low, and priced into pay-as-you-go plans, and with data prices poised to fall, I see no reason that there should not be an upsurge in smartphone demand,” said Lewis.

“The benefits to universal access and service, and to the increased data revenues, are surely to the benefit of users and operators alike.”

The COVID-19 pandemic provides an opportunity to develop and implement long-term solutions to the digital divide in South Africa.

In this regard, the first priority of government should be to ensure that all South Africans are able to access digital platforms through devices like smartphones so that they can stay informed on that which is important.

Making smartphones more accessible to a larger number of South Africans is key to this, as it could help to alleviate poverty and improve the lives of these citizens.

  • DR Congo authorities ‘anticipate surge in child labour’

The authorities in Democratic Republic of Congo’s south-eastern main mining area, Lualaba, are increasing monitoring in the fear that there will be a surge in parents sending their children down the mines, reports Reuters News agency.

The global demand for metals such as cobalt has decreased during the coronavirus, leading to miners’ earnings plummeting, reports Reuters.

It adds that exports of cobalt fell by 15.2% in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same period last year.

The fear is that if parents cannot earn enough money to survive they will take their children out of school to do dangerous work in mines.

“Economic activity has been paralysed during this health crisis and this will have a negative impact on parents’ income… But this must not be used as justification for the presence of children in mines,” Mathieu Kazembe Sawana Ilunga, the official who oversees the economy in Lualaba, is quoted by Reuters as saying.

Nathalie Lunda Ngandu, the official in charge of social affairs, gender and family issues in Lualaba, told Reuters that they will improve monitoring systems for child labour.

  • NPP should have protected incumbent MPs if they cared about them – Ben Ephson

Pollster, Ben Ephson says if the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) were able to save 65 MPs from being contested, they could have done same to prevent the high attrition rate in the recently held primaries.

A total of 374 aspirants contested in 168 constituencies. Of the number, 325 are men and 51 women. 67 of the aspirants were unopposed and were acclaimed by delegates of the party in the various constituencies.

  • I came close to joining French side FC Lorient in 2013- Asante Kotoko’s Naby Keita

Asante Kotoko SC striker Naby Laye Keita has revealed that he came to close to signing for the French side, FC Lorient in 2013, but the deal couldn’t go through due to injury.

According to the 26-year-old, it is still the darkest moment of his career because it was his dream to play in Europe and he came close to achieving it only to be denied by an injury he suffered in a friendly match.

The Guinean recounts he was offered an initial opportunity to train with French giants Lyon. He excelled at Lyon, however, the club decided not to sign him because they had many options.

“I played very well and the club looked interested but surprisingly did not sign me because they said they had wingers Clinton N’jie from Cameroon and France’s Alhasanne Plea,” Keita reveals.

“My manager was amazed by the decision because he saw from how I performed that I deserved to be signed” continues Keita, who goes on to reveal his next move.

“My manager took me to Lorient. I played in four friendly games for the B team and scored six goals. The team was eager to sign me but that was when my fate began to turn.”

“My visa was dying and so Lorient asked me to come back home and have it renewed. But, the major reason why I needed to return was that Horoya also needed me in a Premier League decider against Satellite FC.”

“I obliged and returned to Guinea. Thankfully, we won that game 2-1 and I scored the winner. I got the visa renewed but did not leave for France immediately because Horoya asked me to wait and play in an upcoming FA Cup game.”

“Once again, I heeded,” Keita says as he purses to give a deep sigh. “Horoya arranged for a friendly game against a Division-One club and it was in that game that my Lorient dream ended.”

“I sustained a bad ankle injury that ended me in a theatre in Morocco for a surgery which was sponsored by Horoya. I spent six months in Morocco and in all was condemned to the sidelines for two good years.”

“It is the darkest moment of my career,” stresses Keita. “I got so distraught. It was even worse for my mother who cried every time any of my team-mates or friends had deals abroad.”

“But all is in the past now,” says Keita who joined the Porcupines in October 2019 after a successful trial. “God knows why that happened. And I am glad that I am in Kotoko which is not just known in Africa but the world over.”

Kotoko signed Keita in 2018 on a three-year deal.

  • Government engages police over arrests of maskless lone drivers

Government is engaging the police to revise their interpretation of the Executive Instrument on the mandatory wearing of face masks by citizens, the Minister of Information has announced.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah told journalists on Tuesday, June 23 that government has taken cognizance of arrests of persons not wearing the face masks while driving alone.

“What government is doing is that we are engaging with the police to give the EI a purposive interpretation when they apply it,” Mr Oppong Nkrumah said on Tuesday.

  • Losing 40 incumbent parliamentarians must be a source of worry to government – Prof Gyampo

Renowned Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has said that the defeat of 40 Members of Parliament at the just ended New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries must be a source of worry to government.

He explained that the defeat of the incumbent MPs meant that the policies and good works of government may not have reflected in the various constituencies adding that the issue needed to be addressed quickly.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb, Professor Ransford Gyampo said “although some aspirants who won the primaries are known favourites of the President, the loss of seats by over 40 incumbent parliamentarians must be a source of worry to the government. Had it not been the undemocratic intervention by the party echelons to protect some of the incumbents, there would have been a disaster as more heavy weights would have fallen.”

“This, by a proactive stretch of imagination, can point to a certain yet to be empirically tested view that, the parliamentarians have not served and reflected the achievements of the incumbent government well in the constituencies. If this is true, then even though some seats may still be safe, some votes may be lost, and this may have implications for the Presidential elections, which must be unpacked and quickly addressed.” He added.

Prof. Gyampo, on the hand, said the defeat served as a good omen with regards to representation in parliament stressing that the huge loss serves as a warning because the foremost function of a parliamentarian is to act in the interest of constituents.

In his view, the defeat of incumbent MPs would have been more if some of the aspirants had not been protected by the party to go unopposed.

“The idea of parliamentary representation simply connotes going to parliament to act in a manner responsive to the interest of constituents. Parliamentarians are therefore to act first in the interest of those who sent them there and also consult constituents in their decision-making on matters that directly bothers the constituency.” He averred.

  • I don’t want to come up against a Swansea City attack led by Ayew again- Middlesborough coach

Middlesborough manager Jonathan Woodgate has said he does not ever want to face Swansea City’s deadly attack which comprises Andre Dede Ayew, Rhian Brewster, and Conor Gallagher as the trio played a vital role in the 3-0 win over his side on Saturday.

Brewster – who is on loan from Premier League leaders Liverpool, scored first with Andre Dede Ayew providing the assist.

The youngster then registered his brace before Ayew made it 3-0 from the spot after Gallagher was brought down in the box by Boro captain George Friend.

“They’ve got some exceptional players in Rhian Brewster, Conor Gallagher, and Andre Ayew. We just couldn’t deal with them,” Woodgate was quoted as saying in Wales Online.

“It’s hard to explain that type of performance. It’s not nice to see. It was just the basics of the game at times. It wasn’t good enough.

“We won’t come up against a Brewster, an Ayew or a Conor Gallagher again. Them three up top, I thought they were absolutely outstanding.”

Andre Dede Ayew is having a good season with the Welsh club and has scored 13 goals this season in the Championship.

  • I lost Navrongo Central seat because of Kofi Addas outrageous promises Mark Woyongo

Former Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Mark Owen Woyongo is of the view that he was defeated in the 2016 elections because his contender Joseph Kofi Adda at the time came up with outrageous and unachievable promises.

“I think there are so many factors, you know NPP promised the people of Ghana heaven. We will do this for you, we will do that for you when we come….we will even marry for you”, he said

More than three years after he was denied re-entry into parliament, Mr Wonyongo who served as a Defense and Interior Minister under the erstwhile administration believed Mr Joseph Kofi Adda has not done much compared to the remarkable footprints he left behind.

“The people are not fools, they see what is on the ground. They compare what is on the ground to the promises and they have made up their mind and you cannot go and hoodwink them anymore. Some of them are regretting voting for Kofi Adda…comparatively he has not done much since he became an MP”, he disclosed on Bolgatanga-based A 1 Radio monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

The former Upper East Regional Minister disclosed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a whole was extravagant in its promises but has since failed to fulfill its part of the bargain to the Ghanaians voters.

“They were so extravagant in their promises…they promised heaven and earth. People took in a lot of the promises and they believed they were going to do them. So when I go to Navrongo I ask those on the other side that you people promised you were going to bring one district one factory, where is the factory in Navrongo?”, he asked.

It would be recalled that Mr Joseph Kofi Adda in 2016 polled 20,667 votes representing 52.72% to beat Mr Mark Woyongo who had 17,203 votes making 43.89% thereby qualifying as the lawmaker for the area.

  • Frank Acheampong, the ‘Ghanaian Messi’ who became a darling of Astrid Park

Despite the sporadic resumption of a few European championships, football has been dormant for several weeks. The opportunity for us to retrace the careers of footballers who have, in their own way, marked our championship over the past 10 years.

If some have taken advantage of the Belgian springboard to fly to other horizons, others will never have been able to ride the Pro League wave and have stranded in the anonymity of small championships. After analyzing the incredible career of Marvin Ogunjimi, it’s time for Frank Acheampong.

Arrived on tiptoe, the Ghanaian quickly became the darling of Brussels supporters.

We are in January 2013. The management of Anderlecht proudly presents its new jewel: Frank Acheampong, young winger of 20 years, considered as the “ Ghanaian Messi ” in his country and loaned to Saint-Guidon for six months. An announcement that does not make much noise. Probably because nobody knows this discreet guy who was playing until then in the media darkness of the Thai championship and who therefore still has everything to prove.

For proof, Frankie does not even taste the main nucleus during the first months. Still too tender, he must make his ranges, acclimatize to European football in the hopes. Yet Acheampong is hungry. He is revengeful, scalded by an unsuccessful Celtic test a few weeks earlier. Determined to prove his qualities, he quickly became one of the leading figures of the U21. Hopes that thwart all forecasts and qualify for the final of the very prestigious Viarregio tournament. They face AC Milan there. Unleashed, the Mauves make only a mouthful of amazed Rossoneri. 3-0 … thanks to a double Acheampong. Two goals which are enough to convince the Brussels management to offer it a real contract. In August 2013, Frankie therefore definitely settled down in Saint-Guidon.

The introduction to journalists is in his image: humble and discreet. No big statements, just “ the urge to help the team ”. An age-old refrain that all football players seem to try to repeat over and over again, but which in Acheampong’s mouth takes another turn. That of a very believing man and quite simply happy to have arrived there.

Boosted by this golden opportunity granted to it by the Brussels leaders, Acheampong does not want to miss its beginnings with the first team. In the second game of the season against Ghent, he replaced Samuel Armenteros in the 68th. Ten minutes later, Anderlecht took advantage of an aborted buffalo action to go on a counterattack. Silvio Proto releases the ball from his hand. The leather arrives in the feet of Acheampong near the central circle. He avoids a defenseman’s tackle and escapes. The ball sticks to his feet, impossible to catch him. A hook, then a second to put a last defender in the wind before adjusting the goalkeeper and scoring. In the blink of an eye, Acheamponghas just revealed itself to the Anderlecht public by offering a summary of all its qualities: speed, velocity, vista and ball handling. The following matches are of the same ilk. Acheampong joins the team and his life-saving thrusts are starting to do serious damage. John Van de Brom, the purple trainer of the time, even went on a laudatory tirade saying to himself “ under the spell .”

However, little by little, Acheampong will lose his place, be relegated to the bench to take on the thankless role of 12th man. The trainer mentions a drop in form and a lack of regularity. True to himself, Frankie takes this decision with phlegm and philosophy: “ If he says so, it’s because I have to work harder. I’m always ready to play. If he doesn’t want me on the team, I accept his choice. No problem, ” he said then, before being completely ousted from the pit for the end of the season.

And this first season, made of ups and downs, intense moments of joy combined with rarer moments of doubt, ultimately illustrates the Acheampong paradox well. Because as confusing and sparkling as he was, the Ghanaian also sometimes had a tendency to put blinkers and sink into the pile, carried away by his supersonic momentum. Or to cross an encounter like a ghost, isolated on its left flank without managing to unravel the opposing marking. A dichotomy, symbolized by this lack of regularity, which explains why, during his four seasons at Saint-Guidon, he has never held more than 13 times per season. Why he never became THE taulier on his left flank.

A reputation as an intermittent of the spectacle which did not prevent Acheampong from quickly turning into a darling of the demanding Anderlechtois audience. The spans forgave him for his rare excess of individualism, stood up by one man for each giant and decisive slalom in the Europa League and applauded this man, humble and respectful.

Haloed by two championship titles (2014 and 2017), Acheampong (22 goals and 21 assists in 165 games) will finally cast off in late 2017. He will succumb to the sirens of the lucrative Chinese championship after having long flirted with teams from the European subtop ( Editor’s note): Anderlecht had refused an offer of 7 million euros from a German team ). After four seasons of seeing him pacing his left flank, the Anderlechtois public had to resolve to see Acheampong flying away, not without a final twinge in the heart.

  • Mahama social media victories: Why Akufo-Addo and Bawumia should be worried

Ghana is marching to 2020 election and all candidates are so wild trying to win the hearts of Ghanaians to vote for them. The two major political parties in Ghana who are likely to engage in fierce battle to take the flag of Ghana and lead Ghanaians into the promised land are The New Patriotic Party and The National Democratic Congress with Akufo Addo and John Mahama being the flag bearers respectively.

However, due to the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus, major percentage of the campaign exercises are taking place on social media, television stations and FM stations unlike previous years where campaign rallies are organised. Campaigns comes with promises which candidates use to convince Ghanaians to vote for them.

Several Ghanaian major news portals have conducted several online polls between the rulling president, Akufo Addo and the former president,John Mahama.

JoyNews conducted an online polls which ended and as usual NDC took the lead. Over 42, 000 people participated and from the results collated, the NDC has 57% while the party in power NPP has 43%.

The voters also are of the view that Dr. Bawumia the Vice president has failed Ghanaians as he has been unable to arrest the depreciating cedi and also level of press freedom in the country and the lack of competency by the rulling government.

After the Joy news poll, popular Ghanaian blog and news website, yen.com also conducted another poll. Yen.com think candidates are still making promises towards the 2020 Election, is only right that the public has the chance to judge which among the them honours his promises and so Yen.com put a Facebook poll to compare the flag bearers of the two major political parties in the country; National Democratic Congress and New Patriotic Party.

After the poll ended. John Mahama emerged Ghanaians favourite as he was voted as the best president who honours his campaign promises with 66% of the total votes while Akufo Addo bagging only 34%.

The big question is, should Akufo Addo and Bawumia be worried about these online poll results?

NDC has won almost all online polls conducted by many institutions in the previous years but they were still disappointed.

Could these poll results be some kind of mind games being played by NPP members? Well, I don’t think NPP should jubilate over past experiences at all.

From the ongoing polls, it seems the current government might have the shock of their lives just as the NDC in 2016 if care is not taken by the NPP to address the issues raised by the voters, this is because, majority of this year’s election is taking place on social media platforms and other media outlets due to the outbreak of the corona virus. This should imply that this year, social media will have major influence on the election results.

  • Somalia silent on Trump saying there was ‘anarchy’ there

Somalia’s ministry of foreign affairs office has told the BBC that they had no comment to make in response to US President Donald Trump’s criticism of the country during a campaign rally on Saturday night.

While bashing Ilhan Omar, a Somali-born US congresswoman, Mr Trump alleged that she wanted to reshape the US like the “anarchy” that was Somalia “where she came from”:

“She would like to make the government of our country just like the country from where she came. Somalia. No government, no safety, no police, no nothing. Just anarchy. And now she is telling us how to run our country. No thank you.” She would like to make the government of our country just like the country from where she came. Somalia. No government, no safety, no police, no nothing. Just anarchy. And now she is telling us how to run our country. No thank you.”

The BBC Somali service asked the ministry of foreign affairs if it had a response, but it said that it was not making any comments.

Somalia’s UN-backed government in the capital, Mogadishu, does not control the whole of the country’s territory. It is battling with militant group al-Shabab and the country is often beset by security problems.

Mr Trump described Ms Omar as a “hate-filled, American bashing socialist” who will be part of deciding the fate of America should the Democrat’s presidential candidate, Joe Biden, win the November election.

Ms Omar, who has been targeted by the president before, described Mr Trump’s remarks as “racist”, adding that he was angry because polls had shown that he was losing to Joe Biden in her state, Minnesota.

Mr Biden is likely to be the president’s challenger come November’s presidential election.

Ms Omar, 37, has been an ardent critic of Mr Trump.

She and her family fled Somalia after civil war broke out and spent four years in a refugee in Kenya before relocating to the US in 1995.

Her father, who had relocated the family to the US, died last week from Covid-19 complications.

  • GCNet presented unreadable data to us GRA

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has admitted receiving port operations data from the Ghana Community Network Services Limited (GCNet) but says it is not in the requisite format hampering their ability to make meaning out of it to support the operation of the newly introduced Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS).

“I want to emphasis that we continue to engage GCNet as far as the format of data is concerned. We did not only evaluate the format with our own staff, we did engage other third-party professions in the IT industry to also analyze and give us a third-party eye into the data, we have not been successful.

We are exploring various options as well as engaging GCNet in trying to resolve the issue as in getting the format of the data in a way that we want it. Going forward we would need the data for transaction, we would need it for historical data analysis. We continue to engage GCNet to ensure that the issue is resolved,” acting Commissioner General of the GRA, Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah told a news conference.

Speaking at the same event, the Commissioner of Custom, Colonel Kwadwo Damoah RTD said: “They handed the first set of data to me, experts tried but they could not make head or tail out of it. I went again to them and our experts asked that if they could give us a dictionary or a schemer that would help us to interpret the data.

That was given to us and we gave it to our experts who managed to use it to interpret some of the data from about 2000 to 2012 but from 2013 to date that is where we have the challenge. In some cases, certain spaces were blank and in other cases we have duplication, others have also been mixed up in a manner that would not suit our purpose.

We want the data in a certain manner to suit our purpose; we would want some of their experts make themselves available because we have tried international experts and others outside GRA and we have not been able to make a head way. It was pointed out to some of them and they accepted. So further engagement with their active participation is the only way we can get the key to this.”

Meanwhile GCNet has, in press statement, said the management of the company has handed over all data from year 2002 to May 31, 2020 to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in the requisite format. The management said the data was transformable, manageable, acceptable and transportable to any relational database management system for consumption and use in accordance with international acceptable standards, i.e. the Comma Separated Values (CSV) format.

The statement signed by Aba Lokko, Corporate Communications Manager-GCNet, said there is a trail of irrefutable evidence of confirmed receipt by GRA of all such data from GCNet/GCMS to this effect. It said as part of the data submission to GRA, GCNet provided on two separate occasions the Column Names and Data Types; and therefore, it is totally false to suggest that GCNet did not hand over data to the GRA.

  • Quality of parliamentary discussions will be hampered by exit of experienced legislators – Governance Expert

The massive loss of experienced legislators in the just-ended New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries would negatively affect the quality of parliamentary discussions and laws passed, Dr Eric Oduro-Osae, a Governance Expert, has observed.

He explained that the foundation of any democracy was the quality of laws passed by parliamentarians and if that was hampered it would negatively affect the governance of the country.

He, therefore, called for a national conversation and holistic review of the mode of electing parliamentarians to ensure that experienced legislators were retained to help nurture the country’s fledgling democracy.

“We should talk to the political parties to review their mode of allowing people to contest on their tickets so that we have some level of assurance that some experienced members of Parliament are maintained,” Dr Oduro-Osae said.

In last Saturday’s NPP primaries, 40 incumbent members of Parliament lost the bid for re-election, including chairpersons and vice chairpersons of parliamentary committees.

Dr Oduro-Osae, the Dean of the Institute of Local Government Studies, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Monday, said the role of legislators must be properly defined.

“For instance, delegates in my view think that parliamentarians are supposed to bring development to their areas, attend funerals, give them money when they need it and able to pick up their calls in critical situations for support and if the parliamentarian fails to satisfy these functions then he or she risks losing in the election,” he said.

“But the parliamentarians on the other hand believe that they should be on the floor of Parliament to contribute to debate and pass quality laws, and so their roles must be properly defined in law,” the Governance Expert explained.

Another issue of concern was that the current laws demanded that the majority of ministers were supposed to be selected from Parliament, Dr Oduro-Osae noted, and that the situation created a challenge to parliamentarians torn between doing ministerial work and attending to constituency work.

“So as a nation, it’s about time we had a holistic national conversation on how we can mainstream the definition of the roles of parliamentarians,” he said.

Some notable MPs who lost their seats were Dr Mark Assibey Yeboah, MP for New Juaben South and Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Ben Abdallah Bandah, Offinso South MP and

Chairman of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee, Frederick Opare Ansah, Suhum MP and Member of the Communications Committee, and William Quaitoo, MP for Akim Oda and Chairman of the Education Committee.

The others were Collins Owusu Amankwaah, MP for Manhyia North and Chairman of Government Assurances Committee, Alex Agyekum, MP for Mpohor and Chairman of Youth and Sports Committee, Kofi Brako, MP for Tema Central and Vice Chairman of Roads Committee and Abraham Dwuma Odoom, MP for Twifo Atti Morkwa and Vice Chairman of Agriculture Committee.

Also among the defeated were Ato Panford, MP for Shama and Vice Chairman of Trade and Industry Committee, Joseph Kofi Adda, MP for Navrongo Central and Minister of Aviation, Dr Sabre Bambangi, MP for Walewale and a Deputy Minister of Agriculture, and Mr Okyem Aboagye, MP for Bantama and Government’s Spokesperson on Finance.

With regards to the non-compliance with the Covid-19 protocols by some delegates, Dr Oduro-Osae said the Electoral Commission and the Government should learn lessons from that and ensure the security agencies strictly enforced the directives to avert potential escalation of the contagion.

  • Wirecard: Scandal-hit firm says missing €1.9bn may not exist

Scandal-hit payments firm Wirecard has said the €1.9bn (£1.7bn) missing from its accounts simply may not exist.

Wirecard’s chief executive quit on Friday as the search for the missing cash hit a dead end in the Philippines.

On Sunday the central bank of Philippines said none of the money appears to have entered the country’s financial system.

The German company also said it was withdrawing its financial results for 2019 and the first quarter of 2020.

“The Management Board of Wirecard assesses on the basis of further examination that there is a prevailing likelihood that the bank trust account balances in the amount of 1.9 billion EUR do not exist,” the company said in a statement on Monday.

The missing money accounts for around a quarter of its total balance sheet.

The company said it was continuing to discuss a financial lifeline with banks, including a current arrangement that is due to expire at the end of this month.

It said it was also considering several potential plans to save the company, including cost cuts, the restructuring of its operations, and selling or shutting parts of the business.

The scandal emerged after a series of articles in the Financial Times last year focusing on alleged accounting irregularities in Wirecard’s Asian operations.

The missing money was supposed to be held in accounts at two Asian banks and had been set aside for “risk management”, the company said.

The exit of Wirecard’s chief executive Markus Braun on Friday came after auditor EY refused to sign off its 2019 accounts over the missing funds.

Wirecard joined Germany’s blue-chip Dax 30 share index two years ago. At the time, it was valued at €24bn, but its shares have crashed in recent days giving it a stock market valuation of less than €3bn.

  • Jose Mourinho: Tottenham manager defends his record on strikers

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho defended his record of nurturing strikers following criticism from former Arsenal player Paul Merson.

After Harry Kane drew a blank in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United, Merson said the forward would not manage a high goal return under Mourinho because of his style of play.

Kane had scored seven in 11 games under Mourinho before Friday’s league match.

“I think Kane has no problems scoring in my teams,” the Portuguese said.

The England captain was playing in his first match since recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered on 1 January.

Kane managed 36 touches of the ball during the match – only goalkeeper Hugo Lloris had fewer among the players to have played the entire game. He had one shot on target.

“It was a game where the two strikers [Anthony Martial for United] had a lot of chances,” Mourinho added.

“Do you give credit to my defence for Martial game? Do you give credit for United defence for the game and the occasions that we create or didn’t create?”

Mourinho also reeled off the goal records of strikers he previously managed, including former Chelsea man Didier Drogba, Cristiano Ronaldo, who he had at Real Madrid, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who worked with the 57-year-old at Manchester United and Inter Milan.

“I had a few strikers that played for me and they are not bad,” he said.

Addressing Merson, he added: “Dear Paul, I have lots of respect for you. I think Harry Kane has no problems scoring goals in my teams, especially when he is fit, fresh and has a routine of playing.

“That’s my message to somebody I have a lot of respect for.”
