  • Revealed: NDC elders never liked Mahama’s return, see shocking reasons why he was still elected

Former President John Dramani Mahama lost the 2016 elections by a very huge margin to the NPP’s Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo. The difference of more than 985,000 votes was a big source of shock to the elders within the party. The fact of the matter is that the elders within the party had seen that Ghanaians do not really like Mr. Mahama.

Some if them were aware of the nature of the Mahama led administration and they had raised several red flags, but the Mahama administration ignored any red flags that were raised. It was therefore not surprising that the NDC could not retain power in the 2016 general elections.

The big question is how could the NDC delegates vote for Mr. Mahama when the elders in the party did not want him to come back. Other prominent members of the NDC came to contest the flagbearership position, including Hon. Alban Somana Kingsford Bagbin, Hon. Ekow Spio Garbrah, Prof. Josua Alabi. Yet the Party’s delegates voted for former president John Mahama.

We have therefore decided to scrutinize the various reasons why the NDC party voted for former president John Dramani Mahama. The following are the four factors we want to discuss here.

    1. Financial strength of John Mahama:

Over the years that the mahama’s had been in government, people’s perception had been that the Mahama family has made enough money for themselves. We all know that it is very expensive to sponsor political campaigns as it involves cost of hotels, feeding of officials, transportation across the country, and other obvious expenses.

With the Perceived financial position of the Mahama family, the party executives and others decided to push for John Mahama to be elected as flagbearer against all the other contestants. It was quite surprising to see even top party executives openly declaring their support for the former president’s candidature.

    2. Compensation for 2016 disappointment:

After the 2016 general elections, the then NDC executives saw that they had not done their best to help Mr. Mahama in the 2016 polls. They had all through the period assured the president that everything was going smoothly. On the day of elections, the president was assured that he is in a comfortable lead. But at the end if the polls, Mr. Mahama had suffered the biggest electoral defeat in Ghana’s fourth republican history.

The party executives who felt they had been unfaithful and disappointing to the former president therefore decided to do everything possible to bring him back, as a form of compensation for what they took him through. That is one more reason why the NDC had to bring back JM.

    3. Pressure From members of parliament:

It can be recalled that before the 2016 general elections, almost all NDC members of parliament signed an undertaking to announce their unflinching support for former president Mahama’s return. They did not only launch their support but they called on all delegates to vote massively for the former president.

The reasons for this move by the Party’s members of parliament was because they said Mahama is the person who can do the work for the NDC to win in 2020. But actually, what people suspected was that the MPs were finding a smart way to shield certain financial burdens.

When a party is in opposition, there is always a huge burden on the members of parliament in several areas. So the MPs saw that if the party comes out with a new person apart from Mr. Mahama, they would have to start soliciting for funds to run the party’s campaign and other activities.

    4. Fear of losing 2020:

One major reason the NDC voted for former president John Mahama was that the party executives believe they have to win the 2020 elections, and Mr. Mahama is the most marketable person among the various contestants. The party still believed that Mr Mahama has done a lot of infrastructural projects and therefore Ghanaians will vote for him to come and continue the uncompleted projects. That has actually been their biggest campaign message now.

They therefore believed that 2020 should not be taken for granted at all. They therefore needed someone who could easily mobilise resources from party financiers, and can easily flow with the Ghanaian voter as well. They therefore decided to vote for former president John Mahama

The above four factors are among the several reasons why the opposition National Democratic Congress voted for him to become the party’s flagbearer.

But in all of this, the NDC’s interest is competing with the interest of the ruling New Patriotic Party’s Nana Akuffo Addo.

  • Kennedy Agyapong’s baby mama releases 5 solid secrets about him in fresh attack

The unrelenting drama surrounding the public display and back-forth altercations between Kennedy Agyapong, his daughter and Baby Mama looks to have been rekindled yet again after Honorable Ken disregarded their apologies.

The Baby Mama who initially attacked Kennedy Agyapong for disgracing her daughter and went further by cursing the honorable Member of Parliament in a live video came back remorseful, howbeit, not a lasting one.

In an earlier post she made to the Law Maker on fathers day, the baby mama of Kennedy sort for his apologies as she accepted her fault and apologized to his kind heart for forgiveness. The emotional fathers day message ended up widely shared with many Ghanaians taking stance with her, to apologise to Hon. Kennedy on her behalf.

However, Kennedy refused her apology and chose not to accept her soulful write up into his good books. The Law Maker went on to attack their daughter again as he revealed that, he will rather patronise an HIV/AIDS infected prostitute over paying her(Anell’s) tuition fees.

This new statement made his baby mama hay wire for a second time as she has now come back to comb the trail she had earlier started as she disclosed five(5) major secrets about Hon. Ken Agyapong in successive posts on her social media handle. She wrote in her posts:

  • Nigerian High Commission demolition: We don’t intend to create a diplomatic row – Osu Stool

The Osu Stool says it has no intention in creating a diplomatic row in the emerging litigation issue involving a parcel of land being developed by the Embassy of Nigeria in Ghana on its residence.

The Traditional Council has laid claim to the parcel of land on which a structure purported to belong to the Nigerian High Commission. They explain that the owner of the property trespassed, adding that several attempts to prevent him/her from developing the land had proved futile.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb, Head of the Nii Odei Kwao family and a member of the Osu Stool, Nii Odoi Kwao II reiterated that the said land belongs to the Osu Stool and not the Nigerian Embassy in Ghana.

Nii Odei who declined to speak on the matter of the demolition carried out by unidentified persons extensively said, the incident is a sad one which the Osu Council is not happy about.

He indicated that the Council is scheduled to meet on the matter after which it will be ready to address all issues surrounding the land and the ensuing litigation properly.

He, therefore, called for calm whiles underscoring that the Osu Stool Council remains open to talks with the Nigerian Embassy and any other party on issues pertaining to the land.

“We will finish the meeting today and we will make the press know everything involved. Cool heads should prevail right now. There is no row between Ghana and Nigeria over the property, this is a small property which should not spark any diplomatic row between two sister countries. It is just a misunderstanding. It may be someone else who had gone in to create that animosity. So by the close of the day, we will come out with the real situation,” he said.

On Friday, June 20, 2020, some unidentified persons entered the residence of the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana with a bulldozer and razed down a structure which according to the Embassy was 80% complete and was being developed to house some of its workers.

  • Ghanaians urged not to allow coronavirus overshadow their activities

Ghanaians have been urged not to allow the fear of the coronavirus pandemic to overshadow their daily activities.

Mr Musah Abubakar, Chairman of the Muslim Executive Foundation (MEF), an NGO dedicated to the promotion of the welfare of the Muslim community, who made the call, said most people are afraid to even go out because of the virus.

According to him, there was overall fear and panic in the atmosphere that, some people were afraid to even go to the hospital to treat themselves.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, he said though the virus was real and people should not doubt its existence, life must also go on.

“What is important is for the people to take precautionary measures and adhere to all the preventive and restrictive protocols outlined by the government to stay safe”, he told the GNA.

Mr Abubakar attributed the heightened fear of the virus to the exaggeration, misconception, and myths, which were at times reinforced in the media and said it was creating a form of mentality for the people.

He said people must continue to receive education on the virus and take the necessary precautionary measures to prevent themselves from being infected with the virus.

  • Parts of Accra to go without water

Water supply to parts of Accra will be cut from today, Tuesday, June 23, 2020, as the Ghana Water Company Limited shuts down its water treatment plant at the Weija Headworks for repair works.

A statement from the company on Monday said the shutdown is to enable its engineers to work on the raw water pipeline.

It will also afford the Accra West Region the opportunity to carry out repairs and maintenance work on defective valves on the main transmission lines.

The shutdown will affect water supply to Weija, Mallam Junction, Gbawe, Anyaa, Awoshie, Dansoman, Sakaman, Kaneshie, Lapaz, Nii Boi Town, Achimota and surrounding areas.

No deadline has been given for the completion of the maintenance work.

The company has thus asked consumers to “store as much water as possible”.

According to the Ghana Water Company, “water production and supply will resume as soon as they are done.

“The inconvenience this may cause is deeply regretted,” the statement said.

  • NPP elects 22 females to contest 2020 parliamentary elections

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has elected 22 females out of the 51 who contested in its parliamentary primaries on Saturday to contest in the 2020 general election.

Some political pundits have been advocating the need for political parties to ‘protect’ parliamentary seats being occupied by women in the quest to promote gender balance in the Legislature.

Currently out of 275 legislators in the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic, only 36 are females, obviously not impressive for a country touted as the beacon of democracy in Africa.

Out of the 22 females elected, 12 went unopposed, while 10 were keenly contested by other parliamentary candidates in the 168 constituencies with sitting members of Parliament.

The candidates who went unopposed were Freda Prempeh, Tano North, Mavis Nkansah-Boadu, Afigya Sekyere East, Patricia Appiagyei, Asokwa, Francisca Oteng Mensah, Kwabre East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, Awutu Senya East, Naana Eyiah, Gomoa Central, Nana Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, Akuapem North, and Abena Osei-Asare, Atiwa East.

The rest were Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Ablekuma West, Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah, Weija-Gbawe, Catherine Abelema Afeku, Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira, and Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, Prestea Huni-Valley.

Those who were contested by other candidates were Sheila Bartels-Sam, Ablekuma North, Sarah Adwoa Safo, Dome Kwabenya, Darkoa Newman, Okaikwei South, Tangoba Abayage, Navrongo Central, Amma Pomaah Boateng, Juaben, Cynthia Morrison, Agona West, Barbara Asher-Ayisi, Cape Coast North, Gifty Twum Ampofo, Abuakwa North, Abena Duruwaa Mensah, Assin North, and Lariba Abudu, Walewale.

A total of 374 aspirants contested in the 168 constituencies where the NPP has sitting MPs. They comprise 325 males and 51 females.

Sixty-five candidates went unopposed and were endorsed through acclamation in their respective constituencies.

It is imperative that the major political parties in the country found ways of reviewing their mode of electing candidates to contest on their tickets in order to favour female parliamentary aspirants and protect female legislators.

As a nation, it is time we took a firm decision on female participation in the governance process since 51 per cent of the population are females to champion the cause of women better.

It is hoped that the Affirmative Action Bill, which is currently before Parliament, would be passed into law soon to promote women’s voice and participation in the country’s fledgling democracy.

  • You smoke weed but street boys go to jail for it – A Plus drags politicians

Loudmouth political activist, Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A Plus, has dragged politicians through the mud, claiming that, plenty of them are chain weed smokers.

According to A Plus, about 90 per cent of people who have been in power over the years, smoked the substance yet, the poor, the ordinary and the street boys were those who suffered the consequences.

He said, if the laws of Ghana were not made in a way that only the poor will suffer, how then could a whole Managing Director of the Accra Digital Centre, Eric Ofosu Nkansah, be wandering about freely during the NPP’s parliamentary primaries without wearing a face mask, when a law has been passed to curtail that.

The founder of The People’s Project (TPP), could not fathom why the police, who have been tasked to enforce the law cannot arrest and prosecute Eric Ofosu and other government appointees for flaunting COVID-19 safety protocols but can so same to the ordinary Ghanaian.

He spoke about the now overwhelming “impunity” in the country.

“If Kofi Ofosu, CEO of the Ghana data center is not arrested and prosecuted for not wearing face mask, can the same police arrest and prosecute anyone for not doing the same in this country? The impunity is becoming too much!!!”, he wrote on Facebook.

The post continued: “Every law in this country is made for poor, ordinary and street boys. 90% of the people who have been in power over the years smoke weed yet weed smoking is a serious crime in Ghana and many people have spent their lives in jail for that crime.”

“The president just passed a law that police should arrest and jail ordinary people who go out to find their daily bread without face mask for 10 years. But your own appointee is clearly seen in this video breaking the law – no social distancing. Nothing will happen to him. But police will arrest an ordinary person and a judge will jail a poor person for 10 years for breaking the same law!!! Where is the freedom and justice?”, he questioned.

He cautioned: “This was one of the major causes of the June 4th revolution. Impunity!!! Stop forcing huge volumes of gas into a tiny space, it shall explode one day.”

  • Ghanaians don’t appreciate my father – Daughter of Late Hilla Limann

Zilla Limann, daughter of Ghana’s late former President Hilla Limann, has expressed sorrow over her father’s legacy stressing Ghanaians have ”under-appreciated” him.

Dr. Hilla Limann was President from 24th September 1979 and was overthrown in 1981 when former President Jerry John Rawlings staged a coup d’état.

Dr. Limann is said to have re-contested the Presidential seat in 1992 but wasn’t elected.

He was the only President of the 3rd Republic of Ghana.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nkonkonsa.com, the daughter of the late President explained why her father’s legacy is not remembered in the country.

Zilla Limann believed her dad is not acknowledged in the history books of Ghana’s heroes because the Rawlings’ regime did everything in their power to wipe away Limann’s track record.

To her, although she was very young when her father was ousted from power, she however remembers her father’s vision for Ghana.

”…for what he stood for, he said his ideology is Ghana. So, for him, anything Ghana; it didn’t matter what it was. It was Ghana and that is how he thought and that is what was his vision…And he actually did quite a bit in his time [you know]. So, he took over at a very turbulent time when the economy was really bad. And, in his time…in the 2 years that he was there, he did quite a bit and he was able to start turning around the economy.”

She is therefore downhearted that her father’s sacrifices for a country he strongly believed in have all gone down the drain.

”I think he’s very much under-appreciated and that’s also because the knowledge is so limited. They don’t seem to know much about my dad and what he did. Even me, I think I don’t even know enough because I wasn’t old enough…But knowing what I know now, he was very under-appreciated but then I found out later on that, after the coup happened, it appears there was a deliberate attempt to wipe off everything he did…So even looking for stuff on him is very hard. It’s very, very hard finding things about my dad. I guess because it was a coup. They sort of wiped out a lot of things.

  • Algerian protest leader jailed

One of the leaders of the protests which have rocked Algeria for the past 16 months has been sentenced to a year in prison.

Amira Bouraoui, 44, was convicted on six counts, including “insulting Islam”, “insulting the president” and “incitement to violate lockdown” during the coronavirus pandemic.

Her lawyer, Mustapha Bouchachi, condemned the verdict. “This conviction is unjust, there is no evidence. We are going to appeal,” he told the AFP news agency.

The gynaecologist and mother of two was arrested last Wednesday at her house.

Ms Bouraoui started to gain attention in 2014 when she unsuccessfully opposed former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s attempt to run for a fourth term in office.

Mr Bouteflika was eventually forced not to seek a fifth term in office last year following huge street protests, which Ms Bouraoui helped organise.

However, the huge protests continued until the lockdown was imposed.

Members of the “Hirak” movement such as Ms Bouraoui say that those who wield real power in the country have not changed and corruption and inequality remain rife despite the election of Abdelmadjid Tebboune as president last December.

  • Real Madrid go top of La Liga with win over Real Sociedad

Real Madrid went to the top of La Liga thanks to a hard-fought victory at Real Sociedad.

Zinedine Zidane’s side are level on points with Barca, who drew 0-0 with Sevilla on Friday, but go top because of their superior head-to-head record.

Sergio Ramos’ penalty after the lively Vinicius Jr was fouled gave the visitors the lead.

Karim Benzema doubled their advantage before Mikel Merino’s strike set up a tense finale.

There was controversy when substitute Adnan Januzaj thought he had made it 1-1 with a strike from outside the area but it was ruled out for a Merino offside. Merino did not get a touch but the officials deemed he was blocking goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’ view, so interfering with play.

Their sense of grievance grew when moments later Benzema controlled a Federico Valverde cross with his shoulder before firing home. The goal stood after a video assistant referee review for handball.

Madrid looked comfortable at that stage but Merino rifled a shot in via the underside of the crossbar, after a cross from substitute Roberto Lopez, to keep the closing minutes interesting.

The visitors’ biggest problem from the game came when Ramos was injured soon after his goal and needed an ice pack on his leg in the stands.

Madrid – who have only won one La Liga title since 2012 – are now eight victories away from winning the league.

Barcelona host Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday with Real at home to Mallorca the next day (both 21:00 BST kick-offs).

  • Joseph Aidoo sees action as Celta Vigo wallop Alaves 6-0

Ghana’s Joseph Aidoo was in action this afternoon and helped Celta Vigo to record an emphatic 6-0 win over Deportivo Alaves in the Spanish La Liga.

In a Matchday 30 fixture of the 2019/2020 top-flight league season played at the Abanca Balaidos, the Sky Blue side that played as the home team had too much under their sleeves for the visitors.

Celta Vigo finished the first half leading by 4 goals to nil courtesy a brace from Rafinha, and equalizers from Jeison Murillo and Iago Aspas.

In the second half, Deportivo Alaves suffered the consequence of playing with a man disadvantage following the sending off of Martin Aguirregabiria on the 27th minute.

Ghanaian international Joseph Aidoo who started the match as a substitute was introduced on the 71st minute when he replaced Jeison Murillo. The defender proved crucial at the back as he helped Celta Vigo to protect the 4-goal lead.

  • Somali soldiers end protest over unpaid salaries

Soldiers in the Somali capital Mogadishu have ended their protest over unpaid salaries.

They had blocked roads in the city on Saturday, with some saying they had not received wages in over a year.

Local television footage showed troops blocking vehicles from the African Union peacekeeping force from passing.

The soldiers are fighting the militant Islamist group al-Shabab who said they carried out one of two attacks this weekend killing at least seven people.

Three militants blew up themselves up in a car at a military checkpoint in Bacadweyn town in central Somalia’s Galmudug state, killing three soldiers.

The militants set off a bomb when soldiers shot at the vehicle after its occupants ignored orders to stop at a military checkpoint, Maj Abdullahi Ahmed, a military officer in the nearby town of Galkayo told Reuters news agency.

Separately, two bombs were detonated in front of the home of a military official in Wanlaweyn town, north-west of the capital Mogadishu, killing four people.

“First we heard a blast at the house. The military officer was absent by then. Guards and residents came to find out what caused the blast and then a second blast went off,” Mohamed Nur, a police officer in Wanlaweyn, told Reuters.

Al-Shabab wants Islamic law, known as sharia, to be more strictly adhered to in Somalia and is fighting to overthrow the government.

There are reports that the troops blocking the roads in Mogadishu had recently been fighting against al-Shabab militants in the Shebelle region.

The BBC’s Will Ross reports that the fact that they are trying to protect the population from attacks from al-Shabab makes the soldiers’ complaint even more alarming.

Last year the Somali government – under pressure from international donors – began paying soldiers directly via banks in order to stop commanders from siphoning off some of the troops’ meagre salaries.

Officials also found thousands of names of soldiers who did not exist or had long left the army on the payroll.

  • Man runs amok in Nigeria kills his 2 children, injures father

A 34-year old man, Mr Ifeanyi Apusiobi from Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State reportedly ran amok yesterday and killed his two children with a pestle and used the same object to inflict injuries on his 72 year old father.

Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident, said Apusiobi had been arrested by the police pending further investigation.

According to him, corpses of the children, aged seven and five years, had been deposited at Iyienu Hospital mortuary, Ogidi for autopsy, while his father is receiving treatment at a private hospital.

Haruna said: “At about 1 am on June 21, 2020, police operatives attached to Ogbunike Police Station arrested one Ifeanyi Apusiobi aged 34years of Azu Ogbunike in Oyi LGA of Anambra State.

“The suspect allegedly ran amok in a circumstance yet to be ascertained and attacked two of his biological children namely, Chinecherem Apusiobi aged seven years and Obinna Apusiobi aged five years, with a wooden pestle on their heads while they were sleeping.

  • Zimbabwe anti-corruption body starts audit of the rich

Zimbabwean authorities say people who cannot explain where their wealth came from are in danger of having their assets seized even if courts clear them of a corruption allegation.

The new operation was “an intensive lifestyle audit” of the rich, said the chairman of Zimbabwe’s anti-corruption commission Justice Loyce Matanda-Moyo.

The country is facing its worst economic crisis in more than a decade.

There is mounting public anger over poor services and corruption.

“This is an intensive lifestyle audit on some of the rich people. They have to produce their invoices on what goods or services they rendered and this has to match the value of the acquired properties. We will also be checking if these people or their businesses were paying taxes.” Justice Matanda-Moyo told Zimbabwe’s Sunday News.

The operation is using powers the commission gained in July 2019 to demand an explanation for how people earned their wealth – known as an unexplained wealth order.

People under investigation can go to the High Court to account for their wealth but failure to do so automatically results in seizure of their assets.

Zimbabwe is not the first country to reverse the burden of proof, requiring individuals to explain the source of their wealth. Ireland and the UK both changed their laws to introduce unexplained wealth orders in 2017.

The corruption watchdog Transparency International recently singled out a Zimbabwean case of coronavirus medical supply procurement as looking suspicious.

The organisation said the prices of the medical supplies were highly inflated, indicating possible corruption.

Subsequently, on Saturday, the country’s Health Minister Obadiah Moyo was charged with the criminal abuse of office related to the contract.

He is expected to appear in court again in July.

  • ‘Akufo-Addo stabbed Mark Assibey-Yeboah at the back’- NPP MP confirms

Member of Parliament(MP) for Okaikwei-North in the Greater Accra Region Honourable Issah Fuseini has said with caution that the Flagstaff house didn’t help Mark Assibey-Yeboah, MP for New Juabeng South in the Eastern Region by not talking to persons who wanted to contest him in the primaries to step down as done for others.

The MP made this comments in a follow up answer to comments made by an Honourable on the new day show on Tv3 on Monday 22nd June,2020.

Kwame Governs Agbodza who was also on the show said: “The NPP should be threading with caution. Although am an NDC MP, there are matters that concern all humans.”

“How can the party allow some MPs to go unopposed amd others opposed? Akufo Addo didn’t try for the likes of Mark Assibey-Yeboah.”

“From my sources, it is said that if you are not a Cabinet minister you should be contested. Is he fair to others? What of those who are not in Cabinet but went unopposed, he asked?”

But Honourable Fuseini Issah couldn’t agree more when the Host, Berla Mundi asked him of his opinion.

He said: “I think I will agree to some extent. Mark Assibey is one of the hard working MPs in this Government. He heads the finance committee. He does lots of Government businesses.”

“He even sits in committee meetings that has nothing to do with him. Sometimes I could go to parliament very early only to see his car parked at the car park. He was very hard working.”

But the MP continued that it is high time the NPP party considered certain job descriptions of some MPs just like what has been done for the majority leader in order to allow them not to be contested at certain times.

  • Land disputes: We’re coming after you – Osu Wor-Lumor tells Presbyterian Church

The Chief Priest of Osu, Wor-Lumor Nuumo Noi Sekanku Kpenuku II, has sent caution to the leaders of Presbyterian Church of Ghana that the people of Osu will soon come after them over what he describes as ‘exploitation’ from the church.

He accused the church of cunningly taking portions of Osu lands that do not belong to them.

According to the Wor-Lumor, the church was given five acres of land during the colonial era, at no fee, with an agreement to admit children of Osu for free in their schools.

But the church, he stressed, has claimed more plots of lands without approval from custodians of the Osu lands.

In a bare it all interview with the People & Places team on GhanaWeb TV, the chief priest claims the Osu Presby Church, located at the heart of Osu, has not only ‘stolen’ more plots of their land but they now take fees from children who attend their schools.

“The missionaries also came and begged us for our lands to establish churches and schools. They have now turned round to take school fees from us. And we gave them our lands, especially the Presbyterian Church. I’m saying it for them to know. They gave us curbs of wine, two curbs of gun powder, and took just about five acres of land.

But now the five acres have been extended into almost a quarter of a mile. And our children have to pay school fees when they go to their schools, no scholarship, and when even we have a ceremony and we need their conference halls, we need to pay. We have to pay, which we are not happy about.”

Wor-Lumor Nuumo Noi Sekanku Kpenuku II in the exclusive interview with GhanaWeb expressed disappointment in the Church adding that the Osu people will soon go after them.

“We want them to know, tell them, we want them to know that we will come at them very soon. Yes because if we give something to you free, you also have to give us something free. But if you take our property and you have to sip money from us, then it looks like you are the people who started the poll tax,” he told GhanaWeb.

Speaking about the challenges bedeviling the Osu people, the Chief priest stated that government has forcefully claimed properties belonging to the Osu people.

He emphasized that the elders and chiefs of Osu only signed an agreement with the colonial masters not the government of Ghana, hence they are astonished to see the government claiming ownership of their lands and properties, an act he says has made the people of Osu poor.

“I would want the whole world to know that Osu is being beseeched by politicians. I don’t know if it is for the primeness of our lands because most of the government establishments from the colonial era is in Osu. And I don’t remember when the colonial masters handed over our properties to the Ghana government. Because all our properties that were given to the colonial masters were signed in an agreement between the chiefs, elders, and the colonial masters.

Therefore by simple logic, if the colonial masters do not want that property again and they are going, then the ownership automatically reverses to the allodial owners. But now, the government is saying they own all the Osu lands. That has made us poor.”

Kenya’s military has denied putting any of its barracks under partial lockdown amid media reports that dozens of soldiers are being treated at an isolation centre for Covid-19.

Kenya Defence Forces spokesperson Colonel Zipporah Kioko told the BBC that movement in and out of barracks had not been restricted, but measures had been put in place to protect the soldiers.

The measures include mass testing, routine checks of body temperature, wearing of face masks and hand sanitation points in all barracks.

  • Over 5,000 fraudulent applications received for coronavirus stimulus fund – NBSSI

It has emerged that out of a total of 450,000 applications received from the public for the COVID-19 stimulus fund, 5,200 of them are from fraudsters.

Executive Director of the National Board and Small Scale Industries(NBSSI), Kosi Yankey-Ayeh disclosed at a press conference in Accra on Friday, June 19, 2020, disclosed that applicants with fictitious data, documents and personal details were among those who applied for the special fund, set up by the government to cushion small and medium scale businesses from the impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The discovery has resulted in the extension of the deadline for applications, from June 20 to June 26, 2020, to enable it to address all fraud-related cases before the fund will be disbursed.

“The online portal developed to receive applications has detected more than 5,200 fraud alerts representing multiple applications with same mobile money or bank account details.

“For instance, we identified that one person registered for over 100 people in a community with the same documentation, mobile money contact or account number.

“And so what we did was to engage the services of KPMG, a tax consulting firm, to do a data analysis of the applications to help make the right decisions,” she said.

Mrs Kosi Yankey-Ayeh indicated that some of the fraud cases detected had been forwarded to security agencies for further investigations.

Graphic.com.gh reports Mrs Yankey-Ayeh explained that apart from the fraudulent documentation, the extension of the deadline was also as a result of varied concerns raised by some trade and business associations asking for more time to enable some of their members to submit their applications.

“We had to give all concerns careful thought to arrive at the six-day extension. The grace period presents an opportunity to rectify complaints and errors of applicants with wrong credentials recorded on the digitalised application portal,” she noted.
As of Thursday, June 18, 2020, the executive director said the number of applications had exceeded 450,000, which were mainly made up of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Out of the number, however, about 75 percent had successfully completed their applications.

Applicants who registered via mobile phones represented 58.8 per cent while the remaining 41.2 per cent did it directly on the web portal.

  • Sammy Gyamfi pooh-poohs NPP primaries

National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sammy Gyamfi has lashed out at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the manner in which its primaries were conducted on Saturday.

He said the entire exercise was conducted in “an environment where those who could afford the biggest pecuniary or monetary inducements carried the day”.

Speaking at the weekly press briefing of his party in Accra, Sammy Gyamfi said the primaries by the ruling party were characterized by “obscene violence and unprecedented levels of vote-buying and showboating”.

The NPP on Saturday elected parliamentary candidates for the December 7 elections in constituencies where it has sitting members of Parliament (MPs).

About 40 MPs lost their candidature to fresh entrants.

Violence marred the exercise at some constituencies. At Effiduase Asokore Constituency, for instance, legal practitioner Adom Appiah, an aspirant, was allegedly assaulted by some military officers.

Sammy Gyamfi said even aside the violence, “huge amounts of money” exchanged hands, giving an accurate picture of the corruption in the Akufo-Addo-led government.

“Huge amounts of money in some cases GH¢6,000, GH¢5,000 per delegate, GH¢4,000 per delegate exchanged hands in the full glare of the media while material gifts such as refrigerators, flat-screen televisions, motorbike, tricycles and other valuables were distributed to bribe and induce party delegates.”

He wondered “how a party which few years ago was begging for money from kayayei and street hawkers, how a party which few years ago toured the world with a cup in hand begging for money can afford this level of opulence and ostentation three and half years after coming into office speaks volumes of the endemic corruption and thievery that has engulfed the Akufo-Addo [government]”.

  • Demolishing Nigerian High Commission property can spark diplomatic row Yusuf Yakub

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs in Nigeria, Yusuf Buba Yakub has said the demolition of an uncompleted structure near its High Commission in Osu in the Greater Accra region by unknown persons constitutes a serious breach of the Vienna Convention and has the capacity to cause a diplomatic row and escalate tension between Ghana and Nigeria.

In a statement, Mr Yakub said Nigeria “vehemently condemn in totality that act of trespass committed against the Nigeria Mission premises in Accra. We view it for what it is, an invasion of the territory of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in foreign jurisdictions”.

Mr Yakub further noted that Ghanaians violated many an article in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1949 and, therefore, those who are found complicit in the demolition exercise must be sanctioned.

The statement further said: “That as a Parliament we stand resolute to do everything within our powers to review, re-appraise and re-examine the relationship of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Ghana. We shall also employ and deploy all legislative means within our disposal, including exploring and invoking all necessary rules, regulations and instruments that guide our common membership in other Parliaments, to compel the Republic of Ghana to answer for this act of gross violation and abuse of the immunities of the Nigeria mission and its staff.”

Meanwhile, the Osu Traditional Council has laid claim to the parcel of land on which the structure purported to belong to the Nigerian High Commission was pulled down last week.

According to the Osu stool, the owner of the property trespassed, adding that several attempts to prevent him/her from developing the land had proved futile.

The Osu stool said in a statement that it has title to the parcel of land in question, which, it noted, is separate from that which is currently being occupied by the Nigerian High Commission.

It said the stool has a high level of respect for foreign missions and has, therefore, on several occasions, verbally informed the unidentified trespasser about the ownership status of the land through the security personnel resident on the parcel of land but he/she still went ahead to put up a structure.

Read below the statement from Nigeria & the statement from Osu stool

OFFICE OF THE CHAIRMAN, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND MEMBER REPRESENTING GOMBI/ HONG FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY OF ADAMAWA STATE.

CONDEMNATION OF THE ILLEGAL INVASION AND DEMOLITION OF THE DIPLOMATIC PREMISES OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA IN GHANA AND A CALL FOR IMMEDIATE SANCTION AGAINST PERPETRATORS OF THE ACT.

1.The Committee on Foreign Affairs of Nigeria’s House of Representatives yesterday, Saturday, June 2020, received a clarion call for intervention in an ugly and condemnable incident unheard of in any diplomatic circles across the civilised world: A high- capacity bulldozer was deployed by some unnamed Ghanaian nationals to invade the Diplomatic Premises of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Accra, Ghana. From eye- witness accounts, the heavy-duty bulldozer had arrived the Diplomatic Premises at very late hours of the night and had broken through the gate of the premises, where it proceeded on a demolition spree of a set of 4 units of nearly- completed 4-bedroom block of flats, which are said to be awaiting the occupation of some members of the Nigeria Diplomatic Mission in Accra who are seeking to join their colleagues and the Nigeria High Commissioner to Ghana in the mission premises.

    2. From the callousness of that action against our mission premises in Ghana, the first reaction of our Committee was to consider that a classical case of external aggression against the Federal Republic of Nigeria and a gross violation of all known Conventions and Treaties on Diplomatic Relations and Friendship between two countries. Our Committee further gathered that, while the demolition exercise lasted, several frantic efforts were said to have been made by members of the Nigeria Mission to report what was ongoing to both the Ghana Police Service and their Foreign Affairs Ministry; but, in spite of those efforts, no reprieve, we were told, came the way of the Nigerian diplomats. We further learnt that, even when the police had finally arrived the scene of the incident over an hour later, all they had merely come to do was to shake hands with those they had been called upon to rein-in the audacity with which they were violating the rights of members of a diplomatic mission in their country!

    3. After due consultations among members of our Committee and with various stakeholders in the diplomatic arena, our Committee reliably gathered that the present Nigeria Mission in Accra , Ghana, constitutes a 4-hectare piece of land that was officially allocated to Nigeria as part of the agreement to situate the mission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Ghana during the 60s in furtherance of the charter of the United Nations that then sought to promote global cooperation and friendship among peoples through the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, a global treaty that was ratified by both Ghana and Nigeria. Further inquiries also revealed that the Nigerian Mission possesses all necessary legal titles and certifications, including Site Plans, Payment Receipts and Allocation Papers, from the Ghanaian authorities in respect of the land.

    4. Consequent upon the above gross violations of the articles and spirit of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations by the infamous Ghanaian nationals, who we also gather represent a corporate entity in their country, alongside their colluding allies among the authorities, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs wishes to, therefore, state as follows:

    a. That we, vehemently, and without let condemn in totality that act of trespass committed against the Nigeria Mission premises in Accra. We view it for what it is, an invasion of the territory of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in foreign jurisdictions;

    b. That, we also make bold to equivocally add that, that gross violation by the Ghanaian nationals and their colluding authorities constitutes a serious breach of the Vienna Convention that, sadly, bears the capacity to cause a diplomatic row and escalate tension between our country and Ghana.

    c. That, by their action and, indeed, inaction, which makes the authorities complicit in the act, the Ghanaian people violated many an article in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1949 and, therefore, must be sanctioned. For instance, Article 1(i) of that Convention, specifically, recognises, among other facts, that the Nigerian High Commission in Accra, Ghana, is the premises of the Nigerian State. The article goes on to lend itself to that fact as is captured below :

“The premises of the mission are the buildings or parts of the building and the land ancillary, thereto, irrespective of ownership, used for the purposes of the mission, including the residence of the head of the mission ( in this case, the High Commissioner)”.

Again, Article 22(1) of the same Convention seems to firmly corroborate the above and accentuates its importance when it further declares:” The premises of the mission shall be inviolable. The agents of the receiving State ( in this case Ghana) may not enter them, except with the consent of the head of the mission ( in this case, Nigeria’ s High Commissioner to Ghana)”.

    d. That, as a Parliament, we stand resolute to do everything within our powers to review, reappraise and re- examine the relationship of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Ghana. We shall, also, employ and deploy all legislative means within our disposal, including exploring and invoking all necessary rules, regulations and instruments that guide our common membership in other Parliaments, to compel the Republic of Ghana to answer for this act of gross violation and abuse of the immunities of the Nigeria mission and its staff.

    5. It is against the backdrop of the above that our Committee calls on all peoples and nations of goodwill across the globe to equally, condemn that act of aggression by the Republic of Ghana against the Federal Republic of Nigeria on its soil and to stand with us in every campaign we choose to undertake to make Ghana account for its violation of the international code of friendship against Nigeria. Instead of rising as a bulwark of protection for us , as, in fact, is required by Article 22( 2) of that same Convention, where it states: “The receiving State ( that is Ghana) is under a special duty to take all appropriate steps to protect the premises of the mission against any intrusion or damage and to prevent any disturbance of the peace of the mission or impairment of its dignity”; Ghana did rather the opposite and the unthinkable against our nation in Accra in a place where Nigeria’s head of mission also resides within an earshot! It did not even matter to anyone in authority in that country that, in line with Article 30 of that aforementioned Convention, the private residence of a diplomatic agent shall( read, must, please) enjoy the same inviolability and protection as the premises of the mission.

    6. Now, we have asked ourselves the golden question for the umpteenth time: What offence did our High Commission in Ghana commit to warrant the flagrant display of sheer brutal force against a helpless mission seeking to bring its staff within the same precinct? Nobody is saying anything in Ghana. There seems to be at present a sustained conspiracy of silence that is being deployed to wear us out. But we cannot let this one pass silently in the name of diplomacy from a big- brother nation as in the past. Our High Commissioner must be made to return home by the Executive for consultation. We also call on the Executive to invite the Ghana High Commissioner to Nigeria to provide answers to questions in our minds. It is time we stopped other countries of the world from making us the butt of their frustration and national strife.

    9. Finally, since we know that the land upon which our mission sits in Ghana was officially allocated to us by the necessary Ghanaian authorities, the Land Commission, after we had fulfilled all prerequisites in the bid for acquisition of same and that there are no known litigations or counterclaims to legal titles in possession of the Nigeria mission in Accra, we may be inclined to ask whether there exist any outstanding commitments, upon which settlement the mission has reneged when, in fact, by virtue of Article 34 of the Convention that binds our embassies to every receiving State of the world, the buildings, as well as the mission staff, pay no taxes, dues, development levies etc.to either region or municipality of any receiving country. The relevance of this subsisting Article makes that case unlikely. So, we are, therefore, left to rise to truly investigate what happened in Accra, Ghana and sanction that country appropriately however we can. At our own level as an integral part of the Parliament, the Committee reiterates that we shall continue our search until we receive a satisfying answer on this issue. For, to allow this issue pass, like other acts of undue and unsolicited aggressions against Nigerians and their properties in foreign jurisdictions, may as well spell greater doom for us in the future. Ghana must face, anyhow, the consequences of its action and, indeed, inaction.

    Signed.

Rt. Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub, MHR

    Chairman.

  • Limiting number of voters in internal party polls a threat to democracy – Mubarak

National Democratic Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Ras Mubarak has admonished political parties to review their internal primaries process to help solve vote-buying in party primaries.

The legislator says the limitation of delegates who vote to elect representatives in national elections has caused some individuals with money to manipulate the voting process in internal party primaries.

In his view, political parties should not limit the number of delegates who vote in primaries when every party member pay dues.

Ras Mubarak told Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that every member of the party in good standing should be allowed to vote for representatives.

He noted limiting the number will lead to manipulation of the voting system, blackmail, extortion and corruption.

Ras Mubarak explained this current system could allow drug barons and other persons whose source of money are questionable to contest elections, buy votes and prevent persons who are genuine and competent for the job from getting elected.

”Party members pay dues but when it comes to voting to elect representatives, we allow only a few to decide. That is dangerous. It is dangerous because it provides an opportunity for big gurus sitting somewhere to use their resources to manipulate the system,” he said.

He also told the host when such persons get elected, they find ways to recoup the money they spent in their campaigns.

  • Local contractors urged to strive to win international jobs

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako-Atta, has urged Ghanaian contractors to strive hard to compete with the foreign contractors to win jobs not only in Ghana but outside the country so that the proceeds would come back to Ghana to help the economy.

The Minister, who expressed worry about the inability of some young contractors in Ghana to win international contracts, said: “it is pathetic that Ghana over 63 years of independence do not have contractors that can compete favorably for any international job.

It is a shame and we are going to make conscious effort to build up the young contractors in terms of capacity, personnel, equipment among others so that within the next at least two years, we should have more of theme executing foreign contracts,” he added.

The Minister announced this to the media after embarking on a six-day inspection tour on two ongoing road projects within the Northern and Savannah Regions. The two road projects are the upgrading of the Salaga-Bimbilla stretch road of about 71 kilometers and the Salaga-Ekumdipe-Kpandai (61.2km) Lot 3 road. The total cost of both Government of Ghana (GoG) funded projects is estimated at a cost of GH¢240.7million.

The Minister, who was accompanied by his deputy, Anthony Karbo and other government officials, also toured the 100km BunjaiFufulso road being facilitated by Mawums Construction Ltd.

In August 2019, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cut sod for the construction of the two roads. So far the Salaga-Bimbilla and the Salaga-Ekumdipe-Kpandai roads, which are 45percent and 36.18percent complete respectively are expected to be usable by 2023 and 2021 respectively.

The projects link a number of agriculture-based commercial towns and market centers such as Sabonjida, Sogon, Taali, Abotareye, Chamba and Bimbilla.

Addressing the media after the tour, the sector minister commended the contractors and the workers. “I am so impressed about the quality of work being executed to ensure value for money and also a smooth road system. We are not just building roads and infrastructure but building quality infrastructure which is value for money,” he said.

The Minister assured the residents where the projects are being executed that the road would benefit them and so do their best to cooperate with the workers for the work to be completed on time.
