  • NPPs primaries ends, generally peaceful

Voting by delegates of the governing New Patriotic Party to elect candidates for the coming December general election generally went on peacefully across the various polling centres in the Ashanti Region.

At the Manhyia North constituency, considered to be one of the hotspots, the atmosphere in all the polling centres visited by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) was relaxed.

The 560 delegates showed political maturity conducted themselves well.

The contest for the parliamentary ticket was a straight battle between Mr. Collins Owusu Amankwaa, the incumbent, and Mr. Kwabena Konadu.

The story was not any different in the Ejisu constituency where 750 delegates voted in 140 polling centres to decide who would be leading the party in the area to the December parliamentary election.

The incumbent MP, Mr. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi faced a challenge from two others Mr. John Kumah and Madam Abena Pokua.

The acrimony that characterized the campaign of the contestants was completely absent on the voting day.

Things were the same in the Offinso South everything was calm and smooth. This was the very place where some aggrieved party activists mounted series of protests and invoked curses on party executives for disqualifying their preferred candidates.

Six hundred and ninety (690) candidates decided the fate of the three contestants Mr. Ben Abdallah Banda, the incumbent, Dr. Isaac Yaw Opoku and Desmond Chris Appiah.

  • Messi and Griezmann separated after dressing room quarrel.

Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann separated by Barcelona stars after dressing room quarrel after Lionel Messi was reportedly involved in a dressing room bust-up with a fellow teammate.

Lionel Messi failed to produce the goods, as Barcelona were held to a 0-0 draw against Sevilla.

Barcelona suffered a damaging blow in the La Liga title race, as Lionel Messi was unable to inspire his side against Sevilla.

The Argentine failed to produce the goods and was lacklustre on the night, as the Blaugrana were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.

According to Spanish publication Diaro Gol, Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann were involved in an altercation after the game, as Barcelona’s woes were compounded behind the scenes.

The pair reportedly fell out with each other and had to be separated by the rest of the Barcelona teammates.

Lionel Messi has almost single-handedly spearheaded Barcelona’s title challenge this season and has been in good form since the restart. With two goals and assists apiece since La Liga’s resumption, Lionel Messi starred in wins against Mallorca and Leganes.

Lionel Messi has now scored 20+ goals in his last 12 La Liga seasons.

However, Sevilla held their own against a star-studded Barcelona side and frustrated the title chasers, who are currently three points clear of Real Madrid.

With a victory against Real Sociedad in the weekend, Los Blancos could go level on points with Barcelona and could also leapfrog the league leaders if they win by a margin of four goals.Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann at crossroads in Catalonia

Lionel Messi is undoubtedly the top dog at Barcelona, but the Argentine was unable to inspire his side to victory against Sevilla. As per Diaro Gol’s report, Antoine Griezmann and Lionel Messi were also involved in a training ground bust-up earlier, indicating that their problems might not be a one-off.

It has also been reported that Griezmann is not the only player who is not in the goods books of Lionel Messi.

Fellow summer signing Junior Firpo, who previously worked under Setien at Real Betis, has reportedly lost the faith of the talismanic Argentine.

Firpo has failed to hit the ground running after moving to Barcelona and Lionel Messi is believed to have taken notice of the defender’s poor showings.

The Blaugrana can’t afford to let off-field activities interfere with their title challenge, as they face the most challenging period of their title defence.

With games against Athletic Bilbao, Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and Celta Vigo on the pipeline, Lionel Messi and co are about to enter a season-defining period.

With Luis Suarez and Griezmann misfiring in front of goal, Lionel Messi has taken on the goalscoring burden single-handedly in recent weeks.

Martin Braithwaite remains a substitute option and Ousmane Dembele is still out injured for Barcelona. Ansu Fati, despite his outrageous potential, cannot be relied on to score goals regularly as he is just 17 years of age.

Lionel Messi’s side will look to make amends in their next league encounter, as they take on Athletic Bilbao at the Camp Nou.Also Read: EPL manager Carlo Ancelotti makes surprise Lionel Messi claim

  • Messi does not deserve a red card, he should be banned from football

Lionel Messi is an Argentine and Barcelona’s Professional Football star. He has since the beginning of his career, been playing a top-notch football in the Catalonia side. Having been outstanding over a decade, he has won close to a hundred awards, including six Ballon D’or, a feat that has placed him above any football player you can think of.

The only person that can rival him is Portuguese and Juventus star Cristine Ronaldo, who won the award five times. Together, they have been ruling the football space for more than a decade.

However, it was so heart rocking last night to see Messi do what an amateur wouldn’t have done. He was so unprofessional in that match between Barca and Sevilla that I’m still weeping over the whole incident. The most painful part of the whole thing is that the football governing body seems to be ignoring the public uproar the action of the footballer has generated. Oh! Messi, my GOAT, why do you have to do that?

Being who I am, it is unlikely for me to support evil. Even though Messi is my favourite footballer, ever, justice must prevail. Slapping and pushing Diego Carlos in that match, just exposed Messi’s lack of maturity. He is a type of what my grandmother calls “passing six is not passing sense”. The skill he possesses has hidden much about him. With this, I now believe that he enjoys undue preference from the whole football governing body. My friends call him the most protected player in the world.

If Messi is not the most protected player, why won’t he be punished for violating the spirit of sportsmanship? Though I still believe that he will be sanctioned for that unguided and disgraceful act later, the question is, would it be kept for tomorrow if it were another player? The answer is no. We have not forgotten the Zinadine Zidane and Canaverro incident in the Mundial. Therefore, if his punishment has been kept for the last, it must be doubled. In fact, for justice to prevail for the Sevilla player, Lionel Messi should face an outright ban from football.

UEFA and FIFA should step into this issue if the Spanish Football Federation claims not to know what happened. Even as we recommend ban for Messi, the Spanish Football Federation should be heavily fined and the referee sacked. Nobody should be a sacred cow in football. This is because they would destroy round leather game if they continue in such direction

Please note that I’m an ardent Lionel Messi supporter, anytime anywhere, but not in situations like this. He just disgraced his fans in a broad daylight. What do you think about that action of his? What kind of punishment do you recommend for him? Do you think he doesn’t deserve any punishment? Please, share with us in the comment box. Like, share and follow as well, God bless you.

  • Let’s double our efforts to retain seat – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, who has been acclaimed as the Parliamentary Candidate for the New Patriotic Party(NPP) in the Ablekuma West Constituency, expressed optimism of her chances of retaining the parliamentary seat in the coming elections.

She has, therefore, charged constituency members to double their efforts to ensure victory was granted in the 2020 December elections.

Addressing delegates and executives on Saturday after being affirmed as the party’s Parliamentary Candidate ahead of the December polls, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful, who is the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, said members could not afford to be complacent if the party was to retain the seat in the coming elections.

She said since the party took office in 2016, the constituency had seen some development, adding that such achievements gave her better chances of retaining the seat for the party.

“Since the constituency was established in 2012, Ablekuma West constituency has been the seat of the NPP. We have held the seat when we were in opposition and we have retained it in power. Whilst in opposition we all know how much we struggled here and we have witnessed the development since we came into power three and a half years now.

“Our roads, our children who have benefited from the Free Senior High School programme, Nationa Builders’ Corp (NaBCo), forestry, Ghana Post as well as other social intervention programmes and we have seen improvements in several areas, whether social interventions, health and education, among others,” she said.

She added that the party remains committed to delivering on its promises to better the lives of all in the constituency in the coming years.

The Ablekuma West Constituency has been in the grip of the NPP, winning the previous two elections since it was carved out of the then Ablekuma South Constituency in 2012.

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful, who doubles as the Minister of Communications, would be hoping to retain the seat for the NPP for a third successive term, having won the two previous elections in 2012 and 2016.

She, however, has to beat competition from Reverend Kweku Addo, the parliamentary candidate for the NDC come December 7 if she is to return to the August house in 2021.

She is one of Sixty-seven candidates nationwide who are contesting the parliamentary primaries unopposed, and one of just seven in the Greater Accra Region.

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful further urged party faithful to unite to brighten the party’s chances in the elections saying; “I am prepared to work with any person willing and committed to working on behalf of the party.”

She entreated all party members to ensure that they registered in the upcoming new voter registration exercise to enable them to vote in the December 7 general elections.

Mr Daniel Parker France, the Greater Accra Regional Secretary reiterated the need for unity to prevail in the party, specifically in the Ablekuma West Constituency, to ensure victory in the 2020 elections.

  • Nyaho Medical Centre boss reveals why he made coronavirus status public

Managing Director of Nyaho Medical Centre, Dr Elikem Tamaklo, has said he made his coronavirus status public because he is determined to fight the stigma against infected persons.

In a video, he said making his COVID-19 status public was part of efforts to stop the virus from spreading to other members of his family.

“A lot of people have asked me why I shared my status so publicly. It was because of this idea of stigma.

“My personal story was really that my wife and I were symptomatic when we tested, and in fact, we tested our whole family and our children were positive but had no symptoms at all,” he revealed in the video.

Dr Tamaklo confirmed through the Media Liaison of the Centre, Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, earlier this month that he got infected most likely through a community-based case.

Rita Rockson stated that Dr Tamaklo had not been physically present at the hospital premises two weeks before the public disclosure of his status.

In the video shot in a small office, Dr Tamaklo said himself and the whole family were in good health.

He revealed that symptoms he experienced in the early stages of the infection included fever, body aches and mild coughs.

He urged the public to adhere to the safety measures of handwashing and wearing of face masks since they help to reduce contact with the virus.

As of Saturday, June 21, 2020, the number of COVID-19 cases in Ghana stood at 13, 717 with over 10,000 recoveries and 85 deaths.

  • You cant believe in Jesus and be afraid of touching coronavirus patients – Pastor Chris

Nigerian Famous Pastor Chris Oyakhilome has stated that a Christian cannot say he/she believes in Jesus and be afraid of touching someone with coronavirus.

The man of God said this in a televised serviced when he was speaking to his congregants around the world.

He reiterated his claim of churches still being shut because some church leaders have insisted that for places of worship to reopen, health guidelines he (Pastor Chris) described as “wicked” must be observed. Some of the guidelines include wearing of gloves to lay hands on the sick and suspension of communion.

“You cannot believe in Jesus and be afraid of viruses because Jesus touched the lepers and healed them, the Bible is clear”

Pastor Chris insisted that what church leaders are inadvertently planning is “persecution of Christians” as leaders in the country might currently be mocking Christians.

Landslide victory for Michael Okyere Baafi as he captures New Juaben South Constituency candidacy from incumbent MP, Mark Assibey-Yeboah in NPP primaries on Saturday, June 20 in Koforidua.

Mr. Okyere Baafi polled 372 votes out of the total number of 572 votes cast.

Incumbent MP, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah polled a total of 200 votes.

A total of 10 voters did not turn up to vote, however.

According to information gathered by GhanaWeb, several reasons led to his loss including his poor human relationship with delegates and constituents.

Some also raised allegations that he was mostly absent in his constituency and thus creates a big relationship gap between him and his constituents.

  • ‘Total nonsense’ – Ghanaians react to punishment for not wearing face mask

Ghanaians on social media have described the punishment for not wearing a face mask in public as unnecessary.

According to a new Executive Instrument (E.I. 164), which was signed by President Akufo-Addo on June 15, 2020, persons who fail to wear face masks in public could face a jail term of between 4 and 10 years or pay a fine of between GHS12,000 and GHS60,000 or both.

The Executive Instrument states that the police have the authority to make random checks to “ensure enforcement compliance.”

The mandatory wearing of face masks, which is part of measures to stop the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, will be in force for a period of three months.

But Ghanaians on social media are not happy about this punishment as some have described it as “harsh”, “stupid” and “nonsense”.

According to them, the government could have employed other form of punishments that are not as severe as this.

They also argued that the government has failed in educating Ghanaians on COVID-19, and they are wrong for passing a law which will only affect the poor and vulnerable in the country.

They, however, entreated the government to focus on finding better solutions to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country, as they claim this punishment is not the solution to the problem at hand.

  • Scanty information on theft of donated coronavirus equipment – Kenyan police

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is looking into two separate theft reports relating to donated Coronavirus equipment in March when the Ministry of Health was plotting how to combat the virus that has now infected 4,374 people in Kenya.

While the police at Mazingira House have confirmed that investigations into the two incidents involving donations from Alibaba founder Jack Ma and the Chinese government continues, officials remain tight-lipped about how much progress has been made.

Director of Investigations John Kariuki confirmed that a team of detectives from the DCI’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) office are looking into the cases.

“Those are being handled by the JKIA office, but I’m not aware of how far investigations have gone,” Mr Kariuki said.

But when the Saturday Nation visited the DCI branch at JKIA, officers denied knowledge of any such investigations and referred our team to the head office on Kiambu Road for any information on the matter.

The reaction of officers at the JKIA branch indicates that details of the investigations remain a reserve of very few senior officials at the DCI.

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti did not pick up our numerous calls or respond to text messages requesting information on the progress of the investigations by press time.

The first consignment was donated by Mr Ma, who had made a similar philanthropic gesture in other African countries.

Mr Ma’s care package had 100,000 face masks and 20,000 testing kits, which arrived at JKIA on March 24.

As the huge consignment of test kits disappears, the government is keeping over 5,000 samples that are yet to be tested due to the global shortage of testing materials.

On Friday, Health Director-General Patrick Amoth acknowledged that the country has been experiencing a shortage of test kits. But he said the ministry had received a batch that would last the country four weeks.

“It is always dangerous to have a backlog because if a sample tests positive and the person was roaming for weeks without knowing their results, the risk of transmission is high, hence a tedious process in reaching all the contact persons,” Dr Amoth said.

Healthcare workers, on the other hand, have been complaining that they do not have enough personal protective equipment, a situation that is putting their lives at risk.

This matter prompts the question: Did this equipment genuinely disappear at the airport or was it an inside job by well-connected people? The Saturday Nation is yet to get an answer to the questions.

Since April, the alleged theft of Mr Ma’s donations has been discussed in hushed tones, with rumours flying high on social media.

But last week Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe for the first time publicly acknowledged that thieves had found their way to Mr Ma’s consignment.

The second donation, from the Chinese government, arrived on April 20 at the same aerodrome.

A local newspaper earlier this week detailed how Ministry of Health officials allegedly colluded with local and Chinese businessmen to steal the consignment, revealing that some of the suspected cons managed to escape arrest last week.

Meanwhile, two Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in Kericho County while 12 people who had come into contact with them have been placed under quarantine.

The father and daughter who tested positive have been placed under quarantine at Kericho County Referral Hospital.

This brings to three the number of positive cases in Kericho County.

Governor Paul Chepkwony, at a press briefing in his office on Friday evening, said the two had visited a patient in the hospital.

“The two who were confirmed positive had visited a relative at Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu where a relative who has also tested positive is being treated.”

The 12 people who came into contact with the two cases are being quarantined at the Kenya Medical Training College campus in Kapkatet.

Prof Chepkwony said medical officers who had come into contact with the two had also undergone counselling.

“The county government and multinational tea companies in the region have set aside 2,000 quarantine beds and 300 isolation beds for Covid-19 cases.”

  • NPP Primaries: Police officer prevented from voting in Navrongo Central Constituency

Constituency executives in Navrongo Central have stopped a Police officer from casting his ballot in the ongoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.

The Officer (name withheld) is a delegate but had the opportunity to train and serve in the Ghana Police Service this year.

The officer who arrived at the Adabayeri Primary School center, dressed as a civilian, was prevented by party executives with reason that he was ineligible.

The executives explained that his current position as a law enforcement officer was in contradiction with the constitution of the party.

According to them, the said officer’s name had been removed from the register. But checks by GhanaWeb showed that the name of the officer was still in the register.

The incident developed into a near-chaos one as he resisted and protested.

But the timely intervention of the Navrongo Municipal Police command doused tensions.

Ghanaweb gathered that a call was placed to the Regional and National levels of the party for a resolution to the matter. Authorities involved blamed the constituency executives for failing to pen a letter on the issue in the early days.

Ghanaweb also gathered that the Municipal Police used his superiority to demand the vacation of the young officer from the voting ground, which the officer obeyed.

Calm has since returned and the voting process has successfully been completed at the centre.

At 1pm, ballots from the 35 voting centres will be assembled and counted at the premises of offices of the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly.

Tangoba Abayage and Joseph Kofi Adda are the two candidates aspiring for the Navrongo Central seat.

  • Barcelona held to goalless draw by Sevilla

Spanish league leaders Barcelona were held to a goalless draw at Sevilla, leaving the title race wide open with eight games remaining.

The result means second-placed Real Madrid could move level on points with Barcelona when they travel to Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Lionel Messi’s free-kick skimmed the bar in the first half but Barcelona were frustrated by Sevilla’s defence.

Lucas Ocampos also hit the crossbar for the hosts before the break.

Sevilla sat deep, often playing with five at the back, and it proved effective as Barcelona saw lots of the ball but failed to create many clear-cut opportunities.

Messi’s free-kick was the closest they came, and Luis Suarez’ first-time strike almost sneaked in minutes before full-time, but Sevilla had bursts of attacking promise – Ocampos and Munir El Haddadi forcing two smart saves from Ter Stegen from close range in the first half.

Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann came on as a substitute in the 76th minute in an attempt to find a winner but did not make an impact.

On-loan Real Madrid defender Sergio Reguilon had a great chance to score for Sevilla in stoppage time when the ball fell kindly for him in an unmarked position in the box but he hit it straight at Ter Stegen.

The league leaders next play Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday, 23 June, while Messi remains one off 700 career goals.

  • Fernandes scores late penalty to secure Man United draw at Spurs

Paul Pogba returned to action for the first time since 26 December to win the late penalty that earned Manchester United a crucial point at Tottenham Hotspur.

Pogba, who had not played for almost six months because of an ankle injury that needed surgery, emerged as a second-half substitute and demonstrated he has the creativity to make a difference as United battle for a place in the top four.

United keeper David de Gea was badly at fault when he failed to stop Steven Bergwijn’s powerful 27th-minute drive, so there was relief all-round for the visitors when Pogba surged into the area before he was hauled down clumsily by Eric Dier.

In the cavernous spaces of the deserted Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – as the match was played behind closed doors – Fernandes equalised with an emphatic penalty.

Spurs survived a last-minute scare as referee Jon Moss pointed to the spot again when Dier collided with Fernandes but the video assistant referee correctly reversed a poor decision.

De Gea made a measure of amends with a superb save from Son Heung-min shortly after his error, while Hugo Lloris made a magnificent flying save from Anthony Martial as United chased an equaliser.

It finally arrived via that Fernandes spot-kick nine minutes from time to leave United in fifth place, four points ahead of Spurs.

    Pogba shows Solskjaer his class

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer kept faith with the side that went 11 games unbeaten in all competitions as their season restarted here in north London – which meant no place for Pogba, despite his recovery from injury.

It was no surprise, however, when he was called into action just after the hour to inject some zest into what had been a lifeless United performance up to that point.

Pogba was right in the fray, having a shot instantly – but he made his most significant contribution when he tricked Dier in the area and drew a foul from the Spurs defender to win that point-saving penalty.

It was a timely reminder to Solskjaer, should he even need one, of the rare talent he has at his disposal if Pogba could only show consistency and put the speculation about his future behind him.

De Gea did not have such a good night. There were already questions about his form before this game and he produced another error here – all with Dean Henderson’s reputation growing in his loan spell at Sheffield United.

    Frustration for Mourinho

Spurs will be bitterly disappointed to concede a goal so late on, and in such needless fashion, although it could have been worse when referee Moss erroneously awarded that second penalty – before VAR put matters right.

Lloris had produced that outstanding save from Martial but Spurs were hardly under siege and manager Jose Mourinho, who stalked the touchline in fury when United were originally awarded that injury-time penalty, will feel an important two points have been cast aside.

Mourinho will take some solace in the return of Harry Kane after hamstring surgery and Son after he broke his arm, as well as goalscorer Bergwijn.

Spurs, however, need wins, and this result leaves them in eighth place, six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the chase for Champions League places.

    ‘A strange penalty’

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: “I think difficult to find the word, I have to try to find a nice word – a strange penalty because the team was so compact, so well organised.

“The players did fantastic work defensively – they had two dangerous shots that Hugo Lloris saved and nothing else. Everything else was under control. I have to admit for the last 15 minutes I would love to have had Lucas Moura here, Dele Alli here. The last 15 minutes were difficult for us.

“Lucas and Dele are players we need and we could feel that today. when you look to their bench and then to ours the difference in attacking options. Hopefully, they will be back for West Ham because in this moment it is very, very important to change players.

Manchester United on the spot again – the stats

    – Manchester United are unbeaten in 12 games in all competitions (W8 D4), scoring 30 goals and conceding just three in that run.

    – Steven Bergwijn became only the second player to score in his first three home Premier League appearances for Spurs, after Rafael van der Vaart in 2010.

    – Since the start of last season, Manchester United have both taken (23) and scored (16) more penalties than any other Premier League side. Only Trent Alexander-Arnold (14) has more assists among Premier League defenders in all competitions than Spurs full-back Serge Aurier this season (eight).

    – Jose Mourinho has won none of his past six matches against his former clubs in all competitions (D2 L4), taking just one point from four Premier League matches against Chelsea and Man Utd this season (D1 L3).

    – Spurs are winless in seven games in all competitions (D3 L4), their worst run since November 2016 (also seven without a win).

    What next?

Tottenham host West Ham in the Premier League on Tuesday, 23 June (20:15 BST) while Manchester United are at home to Sheffield United on Wednesday, 24 June (18:00 BST).

  • Coronavirus: Zimbabwe health minister in court on corruption charges

Zimbabwe’s health minister is appearing in court in Harare charged with corruption over the procurement of coronavirus tests and equipment.

Obadiah Moyo was arrested on Friday after the government came under pressure from the opposition and on social media.

A $20m (£16m) contract was awarded to a Hungary-registered firm, allegedly without going through proper processes.

The government has not commented on Mr Moyo’s arrest.

He is the second minister in Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government to face corruption charges.

The deal with two-month old firm Drax Consult is alleged to have been completed without the legal consent of Zimbabwe’s procurement registration authority.

The opposition has also expressed concern about a $2m payment to Drax Consult. The payment was flagged as suspicious by Hungarian authorities in March.

Last week businessman Delish Nguwaya, who is believed to be Drax’s representative in Zimbabwe, was arrested in connection with the case.

The scandal was initially exposed on social media, the BBC’s Harare correspondent Shingai Nyoka says.

People started raising questions about how a controversial businessman, who had failed a vetting process months earlier, had managed to set up a new company and secure millions of dollars’ worth of contracts to supply medicines and equipment – some at hugely inflated prices.

The government has since cancelled all contracts with Drax, the state-run Herald newspaper reported.

Zimbabwe says it has confirmed nearly 500 virus cases, including four deaths, but the actual number of cases is thought to be higher.

The country is also facing its worst economic crisis in more than a decade and there is mounting public anger over poor services and corruption.

  • Prince Boateng dropped from Besiktas squad for Denizlispor clash after jersey incident

Ghana forward Kevin-Prince Boateng has been excluded from Besiktas match-day squad against Denizlispor due to last week’s incident.

Boateng drew the ire of the Black Eagles faithful during last weekend’s 2-1 home loss against Antalyaspor.

The 33-year-old was videoed throwing his shirt to the ground after he was replaced with Umut Nayir in the 65th minute.

He quickly took to social media to issue an apology to the club in the wake of the match but clarified that his actions were misinterpreted as he did not mean to disrespect the Black and White shirt.

However, coach Sergen Yalç?n deemed it fit not to include the Ghana international in his matchday squad for Saturday’s encounter against Denizlispor despite injury robbing him of some of his key players for the game.

Ersin, Utku, Roco, Ruiz, Umut, Güven, Boyd, Erdo?an, Atiba, Elneny, Burak, N’Koudou, Necip, Adem Ljajic, Lens, R?dvan, Kartal, Gökhan Gönül, Caner Erkin and Diaby.

Players such as Damagoj Vida, Douglas and Dorukhan Toköz will be missing the match through injuries.

Boateng joined the club on loan from Italian outfit Fiorentina with an option to purchase at the end of the season.

  • NPP Primaries: ‘I’m in to win’ – Tangoba Abayage brags

Upper East Regional Minister, Tangoba Abayage, has expressed strong optimism in winning the Navrongo Central Parliamentary primary.

According to her, contrary to the perception that her candidature was to test the waters, her decision to contest the primary was to challenge herself.

She added that her excellence in managing the region, 19 months into her appointment as Minister was an indication of her capability and was very hopeful the delegates would massively endorse her bid to win the Parliamentary slot.

Speaking to GhanaWeb after monitoring the voting process, Ms. Abayage said, “I haven’t done badly as a regional minister. If I have been able to manage the region this far, one year and seven months in office, why can’t I manage a constituency”.

“People think I have come to test the waters, she’s coming in to show herself and make herself popular but no. I’m in this game to win and I’m very certain that when the votes are counted after 1 pm, we (herself and team) are winning this election,” Ms. Abayage stated.

Ms. Abayage stated that her win would boost the chances of the New Patriotic Party in the constituency.

“I’m going to win and when I win, I will go further to win the Parliamentary seat and win the Presidency in the constituency for the first time”. She stated.

  • Baba Rahman set for Chelsea departure this summer

Ghana defender Baba Abdul Rahman could leave Chelsea this summer following reinforcements at the London club.

The player who is currently on loan at Spanish side Real Mallorca is deemed surplus to requirement with Emerson Palmieri and Marcus Alonso the preferred choices for Frank Lampard.

Chelsea are also in the market for another left back, with Leicester City’s Ben Chiwell the identified target.

Reports in the UK suggests Chiwell’s arrival will mean Baba Rahman and Marcus Alonso will be sold to make way for other transfer target.

Marcus Alonso has been linked with a move to Italy with interests from Inter Milan and AS Roma.

Meanwhile, Rahman has struggled with injuries at Mallorca making his permanent stay a difficult decision for the club. The 25-year old has made only three appearances for Mallorca this season.

  • NPP Primaries: Avoid the thought of going independent – Boakye Agyarko to losing candidates

Former Energy Minister and current Chairman of the ER Reconciliation Committee of NPP, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has advised candidates who will lose in today’s primaries to discard any mindset of going independent.

He said the thought of going independent after losing a contest is a wrong thing to do.

“It means that you have an unbridled and an inordinate ambition,” he said.

Speaking to Ghanaweb during his visit to some voting centres in the New Juaben South Constituency, Mr. Agyarko said, for a candidate to go independent means he or she did not accept the rules.

“If you did not accept the rules, it means that you should not have contested to begin with.

“The rules are laid out and if you felt the rules were not fair then you should not have contested. But to go through the contest, accepting the rules and then turn round and say I’m going independent is much of certain insensitivity,” he stressed.

Mr. Agyarko urged losing candidates to dust off their shoes and get back to serve the party since there are so many ways of serving the party in diverse capacities.

“So, I will urge all candidates who lose in this contest to avoid the thoughts of going independent, stay within the fold of the party, work hard, and then wait for another time for another contest,” emphasised.

Voting has ended in almost all the centres in the New Juaben South as electoral officers are only waiting till 1 pm before counting begins.

The primaries have been calm generally with all the centres observing strictly the COVID-19 prevention protocols.

Veronica buckets filled with water with availability of soap and sanitizers are strategically placed and all voters were directed to wash their hands before being allowed to cast their votes. After casting their votes, they are giving sanitizers to sanitize their hands before leaving the voting centre.

  • Delegates rake in at New Juaben South: $1,000 and GHC 4,000 for each delegate

Deep throat information gathered by GhanaWeb indicates that each delegate in the New Juaben South Constituency would be over GHC10,000 rich in today’s primaries.

According to information gathered, while contender Michael Okyere Baafi is splashing GHC4,000 to each delegate, incumbent Mark Assibey-Yeboah is giving $1,000.

The separate amounts of money exclude other items given including Television sets among others.

The New Juaben South is one of the hottest constituencies in the Eastern Region as it has never contained a parliamentary candidate more than one term.

However, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah has held the fort for two terms, and campaigns have been so high against him this time.

Some constituency executives were seen displaying their tumb-printed ballot papers to indicate who they had voted for.

The New Juaben South Organiser, Alhaji Abubakar Alhassan aka B. Wassa, displayed his ballot paper before putting it in the ballot box. He defended that everyone knows his preferred candidate so nothing wrong with him showing it.

Voting started exactly 7 am in all 35 voting centers in the Constituency in a calm manner amidst tight security.

COVID-19 preventive protocols were also strictly observed.

  • Coronavirus: Government urged to support informal sector

Mr Kofi Oppong, the Manager of Cosby 1 Fashion College at Madina in Accra, has called on the government to streamline existing policy measures to support the informal sector.

That, he said, would provide the private sector the needed assistance to grow and contribute to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to enhance development.

Mr Oppong, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Friday, said the COVID-19 had added on to the relevance of the informal sector, which had produced protective items such as nose masks, hand sanitizers, and veronica buckets.

“The pandemic has brought to the fore the need for industries to be given support in order to reduce unemployment in the country to achieve some of the Sustainable Development Goals,” Mr Oppong said.

He urged government not to relent in its efforts at promoting skills training through technical, vocational education and training.

Mr Oppong said the Cosby 1 Fashion College, since its inception, had churned out graduates poised to use their knowledge to enhance the wellbeing of society.

“Until the COVID-19, the school was in the process of rolling out a fee-mitigation schemes for the underprivileged who want to enrol but not in a position to pay fees.”

He advised the public to learn one vocation or the other, which could boost their incomes.

Mr Oppong commended government for purchasing large consignments of locally-made protective gears and other health products for domestic use.

He said that should be sustained to keep the private sector in business and create job opportunities for the citizenry.

  • Thousands of protesters call for resignation of Mali president

Thousands of protesters in Mali have gathered in the capital, Bamako, calling for the president to resign.

Led by conservative imam Mahmoud Dicko, a coalition of opposition groups is demanding political and economic reform.

They are seeking the resignation of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta because of escalating jihadist and inter-communal violence.

The president had pledged to form a new government with opposition members.

But despite negotiations between the two sides earlier this week, the protest has gone on as planned.

On Friday, crowds gathered in Bamako’s Independence Square, chanting slogans, blowing plastic trumpets and holding placards with anti-government messages. A letter has also been sent to the president by the opposition groups demanding his resignation.

Mr Dicko led prayers during the rally. Opposition politician Cheick Oumar Sissoko also delivered a speech calling for civil disobedience until Mr Keïta stepped down, according to Reuters news agency.

It follows a similar rally held on 5 June, which was organised by the same coalition. The group have since adopted the name “Movement of 5 June – Rally of Patriotic Forces”.

Mr Keïta, who is 75 and known as IBK, was first elected president of the west African nation in 2013. He secured a second five-year term in 2018.

But he has come under mounting pressure in recent months due to Mali’s worsening economy, coronavirus, and a teachers’ strike. Political tensions have also arisen from a disputed legislative election in March, and allegations of corruption.

Mali has been wracked by instability since 2012, when Islamist groups hijacked an insurrection by Tuareg separatists, seizing swathes of territory in the north. But violent attacks on government forces and UN peacekeepers continue.

In recent days, the president has been pushed to make concessions to opposition groups, like raising the salaries of public teachers following a pay dispute.

A delegation from the West African regional bloc Ecowas is also mediating between the two sides.

But protesters say not enough is being done to curb corruption or fix the failing economy.

  • Akesse Brempong not happy with GHAMRO

Multiple award-winning gospel artiste, songwriter and worship leader, Akesse Brempong, has revealed that although he is a registered member of the Ghana Music Right Organization (GHAMRO), the organization has failed to pay him his royalties.

The issue of music royalties has been a big topic for Ghanaian musicians as regards to how effective systems and structures governing their intellectual property have been.

Recently, hiplife artiste, Kwaw Kese, told George Quaye in an interview on Showbiz A-Z on Joy FM that he had not received a penny from GHAMRO as royalties since he started music.

Another hiplife act, Edem, also revealed that GHAMRO paid him royalties once in a blue moon, which according to him, was not fair.

Mr. Brempong, who thinks the collective society has not treated him fairly, stated that ever since he became a member of the collective society five year ago, the society had refused to pay him his royalties.

He told Godfrey Ainoo, host of Starr Drive on Starr FM, in an interview “I have not received royalties from GHAMRO for the past five years since I joined the agency and have since not received a dime.”

He, however, urged the collective society to embrace digital marketing to promote local musical works on the international music platform and to also stop other music platforms from illegally using Ghanaian musical works.

By going digital, the collective society will be able to monitor the various activities of music users in and outside the country. He believes that digital avenues including caller-ring back tunes were one of the many ways Ghanaian artistes could make money for themselves.

He indicated that afro beat was the new trend, “young people determine where the trend of music is going to and now afro beat is on the rise.” Even on the international market big record labels are trying to break through with afro beat into mainstream.”

Meanwhile a number of music stakeholders have called on GHAMRO to develop an online music distribution platform to enable the 200 million music users outside the country subscribe to have access to locally produced songs.

They urged the collective society to create the GHAMRO Digital Conference to bring all industry stakeholders together, so as to create an atmosphere where issues affecting the sector could be discussed.

  • Queen Elizabeth to honour Ghana’s fundraising WW2 veteran

A 95-year-old Ghanaian World War Two veteran is to be honoured by Queen Elizabeth for his fundraising efforts.

Private Joseph Hammond walked two miles (3.2km) a day for a week in May, raising $35,000 (£28,000) for frontline health workers and veterans in Africa.

“I was overwhelmed and filled with joy,” he said on hearing he was to get a Commonwealth Point of Light award.

He said he had been inspired by fellow veteran Capt Tom Moore, who raised more than £32m in the UK to fight Covid-19.

Capt Moore completed 100 laps of his garden in the run-up to his 100th birthday in April for NHS charities.

This prompted Pte Hammond to start his own campaign to raise money to buy personal protection equipment (PPE) for health workers and to protect vulnerable veterans on the African continent.

He started each day’s walk in the capital, Accra, early in the morning so he could complete his two miles before the heat and humidity of the day peaked, reports the BBC’s Thomas Naadi.

He wants to raise about $600,000 in total, so the former Ghanaian soldier, who like Capt Moore fought in Burma, hopes donations will continue to be made, our reporter says.

‘He is a force of nature’

Iain Walker, the UK high commissioner to Ghana who joined Pte Hammond on his walk, said the Queen presented Points of Light awards to outstanding volunteers across the Commonwealth who changed the lives of their community.

“Pte Hammond exemplifies these qualities. It has been a privilege to get to know Pte Hammond and to experience his selflessness,” he said.

Earlier this month, he had received a letter from Prince Harry, the Queen’s grandson, commending him on his walk.

  • Social Media has changed a lot about TV shows – KOD

TV & Radio personality, Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD), has said the dynamics of TV shows is not as it used be back in the day when he was a young presenter.

The reason, he indicated, was because of the emergence of social media, adding that it has changed a lot about the sector.

“There was very little one could get from traditional media because we had only a few platforms, but the advent of social media had totally changed that narrative.

Having few platforms for shows made it easier for producers and advertisers to work together. But now, you would need the wow factor to stand out. There must be something special about your content besides the sensation,” he stated.

KOD, who was speaking in an interview with NEWS-ONE, was comparing his new show on Ghone TV dubbed, KOD Meets, to other shows from the past.

The new show is a personality and lifestyle show that also involves witty conversations on politics, relationships and sex among others. It will premiere this Sunday at 8:30pm on Ghone TV.

He assured viewers of a great viewing pleasure saying, “KOD Meets is meant to give viewers an up close glance at personalities they have admired from a distance and also people who are quietly affecting change and impacting society.”
