  • Kwamena Duncan speaks against NDCs desire for an armageddon

Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan has reiterated his belief that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has no good intentions for the country.

The NPP, last week, accused the opposition party of praying for a high number of COVID-19 cases to be recorded in Ghana due to their continuous backlash against the ruling government.

On Wednesday’s edition of ‘Kokrokoo’ on PEACE FM, Kwamena Duncan reacted to suggestions of ‘cooked’ recovery figures.

“Cooked figures?… This can only be bellied by a desire for an Armageddon out of COVID-19. From the word go, that has been their wish”.

He further described as ‘discouraging’, comments from Special aide to former President John Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari.

  • Coronavirus: 30 health workers test positive in Ashanti

Thirty health workers in the Ashanti Region have so far tested positive for COVID-19 in their line of duty, Dr. Emmanuel Tinkorang, the Regional Director of Health Services, has disclosed.

The affected workers, comprised of various categories of frontline workers managing the pandemic in the region, according to the Director, were all in stable conditions and responding to treatment.

Dr. Tinkorang who was giving a regional update on COVID-19 at a media briefing said the situation would not, in any way, affect the unwavering resolve of health workers in the region to contain the disease.

He said the new cases in the region were beginning to reduce, including Obuasi, which had been the main epicenter accounting for over 65 per cent of 886 confirmed cases.

He further disclosed that the Obuasi Municipal and Obuasi East District have recorded 587 confirmed cases combined out of about 6,000 samples tested.

The Regional Director explained that the huge numbers that were recorded in the Obuasi area on May 8, was as a result of a backlog of samples taken between April 19 and 27, following the confirmation of a case in one of the Obuasi markets.

According to him, the patient who later died had spent about two weeks in the market without knowing her status, thereby, spreading the disease to a lot of people.

“We had to embark on enhancing surveillance in the area and that explains why most of the samples taken proved positive”, he stated.

Dr. Tinkorang said the rate of infection had since gone down, saying that, his outfit had intensified surveillance and also deployed more health workers to the area.

Giving a general overview of the region, he said 15 people were on admission, 75 in isolation, with 54 active contacts being followed up.

He said 25 out of the 43 districts had reported confirmed cases out of which 52 per cent were females and 48 per cent being males.

  • NDC has no regard for rule of law – Kwamena Duncan

Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan has slammed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for accusing the New Patriotic Party of seeking to hold on to power through foul means.

The leadership and members of the NDC have strongly spoken against the compilation of a new voters’ register by the Electoral Commission (EC), and recently upped its opposition a notch higher by accusing the electoral body and the National Identification Authority (NIA) of conniving with the governing NPP to rig the impending general elections.

According to NDC National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the EC wants to disenfranchise 11 million electorates by making requirements for the Ghana card and passport to be the only legal documents for the registration exercise.

He maintained that the EC and NIA are planning to use the Ghana card and passport as an excuse to skew the elections in favour of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Both bodies – EC and NIA – have refuted the NDC claims saying their intent to use the Ghana card and passport for the registration exercise is not borne out of any ulterior motive but rather to help ”in the elimination of unqualified names in the register”.

The EC assured ”all stakeholders at all levels of its determination to deliver free, fair and credible Presidential and Parliamentary Elections on December 7, 2020 as mandated by law”.

Making his submissions on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, Hon. Kwamena Duncan questioned the caliber of the people at the helm of affairs of the biggest opposition party, accusing them of having no regard for rule of law in the country.

According to him, the NDC’s position on the EC’s decision to compile a new voters’ register coupled with their notion that National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card holders should be allowed to register, deviates from a Supreme Court ruling that the NHIS card cannot be used in the country’s electoral system.

”NDC leadership led by Mr. Ofosu Ampofo is very [very] disappointing”, he said to host Kwami Sefa Kayi.

  • Coronavirus: Intensify public education on nose masks wearing – ASIG

Advocate for Social Intervention Ghana (ASIG), a civil society organization dedicated to the promotion of social justice, has called for further education on the wearing of nose masks.

This, according to the organization would help the people appreciate the importance of the nose masks in the fight against the COVID-19 in the country.

A statement signed by Mr Emmanuel Arthur, Chief Executive Officer and issued in Kumasi, said it was important for all Ghanaians to know and understand when, where, and how to wear the nose masks, as a preventive measure for COVID-19.

The statement, which was in reaction to the arrest and prosecution of people found not to be wearing the nose masks, said such action would not help in the fight against the spread of the virus.

It said stigmatization associated with the pandemic had become a serious challenge in the fight against the disease in the country, and making the non-wearing of nose masks a sinful act, would aggravate the situation.

According to the statement, what the people needed was an education on why and where he or she should wear the mask since most people were finding it difficult to wear it throughout the day.

“People should be encouraged to cover their nose and mouth when they are going to have an interaction with people”, the statement pointed out.

The statement said if care was not taken, the strict enforcement of the directive would force the people to wear the masks only when they were about to meet the police or any security personnel.

It called on the government and the Ghana Health Service to strengthen public education of the preventive protocols to ensure that people understood and adhered to them without compulsion.

  • Government shouldn’t rush into reopening schools amid coronavirus – NDC National Youth Organizer

National Youth Organizer of the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo has said any attempt at reopening schools anytime soon amid the coronavirus pandemic is a plan by government to achieve an ulterior motive.

He argued on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ discussion segment that such preparations by the ruling government is never the best and must not be encouraged.

” . . plans by government to reopen schools anytime soon is an agenda to set a common goal that the pandemic is no more with us which is never true. Government is just setting ways to achieve its political gains,” he said.

The NDC National Youth Organiser wondered how children could hold out against the disease that is even very difficult for adults to withstand it.

“Seriously I can’t imagine how a child will be quarantined for two weeks, can this be possible in our part of the world,” he asked.

Mr. Opare Addo noted that the risk of contracting Coronavirus in Ghana is still high and the government should “not rush” into reopening schools.

  • AMA demolishes structures at Jamestown to pave way for Fishing Harbour project

Over 400 temporary and permanent structures have been pulled down by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to pave way for the construction of the Jamestown Fishing Harbor.

The sixty million dollar harbour is one of the major infrastructure projects of the government.

Sub-Metro Chairman of Ashiedu Keteke, under the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Seth Raymond Tettey told Citi News that, the project will commence right after the demolition exercise.

“We have notified all those here that the contractor is coming on-site so we want all of them to vacate so the contractor will start his work but you know how human institutions work. They have still not moved so we had to clear the site for the contractor to start work. We want to assure the contractors that immediately after the clearance they will take over and start their work.”

Meanwhile, some affected dwellers say the government should have relocated them before embarking on the exercise.

“We have some documents on this land. The government should have contacted us and compensated us. The government cannot just come and destroy everything.”

“They have demolished our buildings but they have to tell us whether we were part of those whose buildings were supposed to be demolished or not,” some of the affected residents lamented.

The James Town Fishing Harbour project has witnessed five sod-cutting ceremonies by previous governments without any significant construction following these ceremonies.

The sixty-million dollar Chinese grant project is expected to create employment for residents of Jamestown, boost trading activities and increase revenue not just for residents but the country.

The residents have consistently complained about the demolition by various governments without any construction.

  • CHRAJ dismisses ASEPAs petition against CJ

The Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has dismissed the petition brought against Chief Justice, Anin-Yeboah by Mr Mensah Thompson the Executive Director for the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA).

Mr Thompson in his complaint filed at CHRAJ said Parliamentary approval of Justice Anin Yeboah will go contrary to article 286 of the 1992 constitution because he had refused to disclose his assets and liabilities as required by the 1992 constitution.

But CHRAJ after investigating the matter in its report said the following:

    Findings

At the end of the preliminary investigations the commission finds as a fact that the respondent has complied with article 286 of the constitution by declaring his assets and liabilities to the auditor general.

    Decision

Having found out that the respondent had declared his assets and liabilities at the time the allegations were made and having satisfied the conditions for holding that office then, all be it a late submission, what should be the appropriate action that the commissioner should take in respect of the results of the investigation?

The commission is of the considered view that having found that the respondent has complied with article 286, the appropriate action in the circumstances would be to dismiss the compliant as overtaking, unsubstantiated and not made out. The compliant is accordingly dismissed.

We must add however that the commission recognises that the schedule of a Justice of a Supreme Court and other high-ranking public officials can be very demanding and could sometimes accession lapses in some areas of their work. However, that is not to excuse a person indefinitely from his or her duty under the law.

  • Coronavirus: Spain tightens mask rules for all older than five

Wearing masks is being made compulsory in Spain both indoors and out in public if social distancing is not possible.

Only children under six and people with health issues are exempt from the law, which comes into force on Thursday.

Many European countries have now made wearing masks a requirement on public transport but the Spanish decree goes further.

Spain has seen one of the worst Covid-19 outbreaks in Europe but is now easing the lockdown gradually.

It already requires the wearing of masks on public transport and is now strengthening the rules across the population. Spain has reported almost 28,000 deaths and 232,000 infections since March but the rate of infection has declined.

Spain had imposed some of the toughest measures on the continent, including keeping children indoors for six weeks. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed parliament on Wednesday ahead of a vote on extending the state of alert for two more weeks.

    What does the law say?

The decree states: “Using masks will be compulsory on the street, in open spaces and any closed place of public use, when it is not possible to maintain a safe distance of at least two metres (6.5ft).”

While children under six are not required to wear masks, all between the ages of three and five are recommended to wear them. According to El País, that means 45 million people will now have to wear a mask and another 1.3 million will be urged to.

The law underlines that it is following World Health Organization recommendations to minimize infection in closed and public places where there is a large concentration of people.

It says wearing masks is justified as it blocks the transmission of infected droplets in areas where safe distances cannot be guaranteed.

You are exempt if you have a respiratory illness or another health issue or disability that makes wearing a mask impossible.

In other words, people with asthma, allergies or forms of anxiety will not be liable. No penalties for breaking the law are mentioned and there is no specific type of mask detailed other than that it should cover both nose and mouth.

But they are by no means fool-proof – if you touch them, if you wear them wrongly and if they are loose around the edges they can become contaminated. And they are not a replacement for washing hands frequently and social distancing.

They are also not thought to be as relevant when people are outdoors.

The World Health Organization says only two groups of people should wear masks – those who are unwell with symptoms and those caring for people suspected to have the virus. It also says medical masks – which are usually much tighter and better made – should be kept for healthcare workers, who are most in need.

  • You cant get Kontomire, Dawadawa with GH¢1.80 per day Prisoners told

The Deputy Director of Prisons at the Koforidua Prisons, ADP Joseph Asabri, says the GH¢1.80 for a three-square would not make it possible for prisoners to have the luxury of enjoying a balanced diet to boost their immune systems against Covid-19 as the president has encouraged.

“Government feeds one prisoner, GH¢1.80 a day,” ADP Asabri said. “We pay suppliers and buy fire wood out of that, so in effect the GH¢1.80 is less for three square meals.”

He added: “So eating a balanced diet with meals such as Kontomire, Dawadawa and the rest would be difficult to manage with the GH¢1.80. They even asked us to use vitamin C to boost our immune system, all these would be difficult to do for us.”

ADP Asabri made this known when the Omega House Chapel of the Assemblies of God led by Head Pastor Prophet Albert Asihene-Agyakwa presented groceries and hand-washing items worth GH¢40,000 to them to help fight the spread of the virus.

The daily stipend given by government amounts to GH¢0.60 per meal for each prisoner.

The Koforidua Prisons has a total of over 650 inmates.

It relies on donations from religious organizations and benevolent individuals to augment what government provides.

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, management held fresh convicts for a mandatory 14-day quarantine before they join the larger population but that arrangement has been cancelled because the designated cells were becoming congested.

Fresh convicts are now being sent to Ankaful Prisons designated for the southern zone for the Central, Greater Accra and Eastern regions.

“We cannot continue to be creating cells because of congestion, so effective May 15, 2020 fresh inmates would be admitted at Ankaful prisons.”

  • Coronavirus: Ghanaians reduce trips to short distances Report

A latest report on mobility among the Ghanaian population has established a decrease in travels following the lifting of the two-week partial lockdown imposed in parts of the country to contain spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Assessing movements within regions and districts in hitherto restricted areas like the Greater Accra Region and Kumasi in the Ashanti Region as well as other areas around the country, the report found that though movements had slightly increased, it remains lower than the norm.

Generally, it noted that trips were mainly restricted to short distances and routine daily trips related to activities such as commuting to work, shopping and entertainment.

Jointly conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Flowminder Foundation, a non-profit organisation and Vodafone Ghana, the report used data from mobile network operators to understand mobility patterns of the citizenry for decision making in managing the pandemic.

The organisations analysed the effects of mobility and social distancing interventions between February 17 and May 3, 2020, highlighting the differences in population movements before, during and after the mobility restrictions were introduced and lifted.

Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Annim, in a release copied to the Ghanaian Times yesterday, commended the public for showing discipline after the lockdown and not reverting to old ways of living.

“The observation that mobility after the partial lockdown was lifted remains at levels lower than mobility during the periods of the baseline and the initial restrictions, including sanctioning social distancing and adherence to public health hygienic protocols, endorses the effectiveness of the use of moral suasion as a complementary intervention in the fight against COVID-19.

“Residents in Ghana deserve commendation for not reverting to the ways of living prior to the imposition of the initial restrictions and are therefore urged to continue with change in behaviour in order to contain the epidemic,” he said.

Prof. Annim was confident the report will support policymaking and decisions in government response to the pandemic moving forward.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Vodafone Ghana, Patricia Obo-Nai, noted that mobility insights were crucial in evaluating the effectiveness of measures put in place by government in fighting COVID-19.

She, thus, hoped that more research is focused in the area to support policymaking.

On her part, Data Scientist at Flowminder, Tracey Li, observed that the overall trend in reduction of movement could be helpful in case management and treatment of COVID-19 cases.

As of yesterday, Ghana had a total of 6096 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1,773 recoveries and 31 deaths.

Of the number tested positive to the virus, 4,128 had come from contact tracing; 1,853 from routine surveillance and 115 from mandatory quarantine, meaning that contact tracing, was helping discover more infected persons in the country.

  • Trump says G7 summit could happen in person at Camp David

President Donald Trump said Wednesday he could restore plans to hold the annual G7 summit in person at his Camp David retreat, after previously ordering the event to take place by video-conference.

In a tweet, Trump said that recovery from the coronavirus pandemic was going well enough for possibly making the huge diplomatic gathering an in-person occasion.

“Now that our Country is ‘Transitioning back to Greatness’, I am considering rescheduling the G-7, on the same or similar date, in Washington, D.C., at the legendary Camp David. The other members are also beginning their COMEBACK. It would be a great sign to all – normalization!” Trump tweeted.

Due to the ambiguous wording of the tweet, it wasn’t clear if Trump meant is mulling ruling out Washington altogether in favor of Camp David – or if he is considering venues in the capital as well.

The G7 summit, which is hosted by the United States this year, was due to be held in June at Camp David. But in March, the White House said that due to the pandemic it would be held remotely.

G7 countries – Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States – take turns organizing the annual gathering. Last year it was France.

Trump’s hosting of the summit has seen numerous hiccups, starting with his controversial push to stage it at one of his own golf resorts.

Last October, the White House announced that the Trump National Doral Golf Club near Miami had been chosen out of 12 possible sites.

The White House insisted there was no conflict of interest in using a Trump family business and claimed there was no equally suitable venue in the country.

Following strong resistance in Congress, Trump switched tack in December, saying he could use Camp David, a historic presidential retreat, instead.

In a tweet at the time, Trump blamed “both Media & Democrat Crazed and Irrational Hostility” for the decision to abandon the Doral plan.

  • US hits top Iranian officials for human rights abuses

The US government imposed sanctions on Wednesday on an Iranian government minister and senior law enforcement and military officials over human rights abuses.

“The Iranian regime violently suppresses dissent of the Iranian people, including peaceful protests, through physical and psychological abuse,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

“The United States will continue to hold accountable Iranian officials and institutions that oppress and abuse their own people.”

The sanctions, the latest in a series of measures against the Iranian regime, target Interior Minister and chair of Iran’s National Domestic Security Council (NDSC), Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, seven law enforcement officials and an IRGC commander.

The Treasury alleged that Rahmani Fazli has issued orders authorizing Iran’s Law Enforcement Force to use “lethal force in response to the November 2019 protests, resulting in violence against peaceful protestors and bystanders. His orders led to the killing of many protestors, including at least 23 minors.”

Washington also targeted IRGC Brigadier General Hassan Shahvarpour Najafabadi, Law Enforcement Force Commander Hossein Ashtari Fard, and Deputy Commander Ayoub Soleimani.

The sanctions block all US assets and property of the officials and prevent US financial institutions from dealing with them.

The steps also have implications for foreign banks and businesses which can run afoul of US authorities if they engage in transactions with sanctioned officials or firms.

The State Department also sanctioned Rahmani Fazli for “his involvement in gross violations of human rights,” barring him and his family from entering the United States.

The US government said the LEF was “responsible for or complicit in serious human rights abuses that have occurred since the disputed June 2009 presidential election and ensuing protests.”

The LEF also operates detention centers associated with physical and psychological abuses, and was implicated in the torture and drowning of Afghan nationals attempting to cross into Iran, according to the US government.

  • Queen mother for Manya Krobo destooled for non-performance – Odumase Council

The Odumase Council, Kingmakers of the Manya Krobo Traditional Stool say the council destooled the Paramount Queen Mother for the Manya Krobo traditional area for non-performance.

A statement issued by the Council, dated Tuesday, May 19, 2020, and signed by its secretary, Bah Sackitey said Nana Aplam II was destooled for failing to perform her primary duties to the satisfaction of the Stool.

The decision, it maintains, was taken after what it calls “extensive investigation, consultation and review.”

“After an extensive investigation, consultation and review, the council concluded that Nana Aplam II after almost five years on the stool, failed to perform her primary duties to the satisfaction of the standards of the Manya Krobo Stool and in accord with the duties, responsibilities and obligations of the Paramount Queen of the Manya Krobo State,” the statement read.

The Odumase Council through the statement maintains that the decision taken against Nana Aplam II was arrived after an impartial, fair and transparent process and reiterates its commitment to providing consistent and effective leadership.

The immediate destoolment of Nana Aplam II was announced to her before a meeting of chiefs and elders of the Area on Monday, May 11, 2020 at Odumase Krobo.

Sources linked her destoolment to her recent marriage to a man from the Manya Division, headed by the Divisional Chief of the Area, Okpatakpla Nene Sasraku IV who together with four other Divisional Chiefs in October 2019, declared their autonomy from Nene Sakite II and elevated all six Divisional Stools to independent paramountcies, describing her actions as an act of betrayal.

Nana Aplam II will go down in history as the first Queen Mother to be destooled in the Manya Krobo Traditional Area.

The Kingmakers of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area are under customary obligation to present a new candidate for installation as Queen Mother of the Area.

Privately known as Grace Asare, Nana Aplam II was installed the Queen Mother of the Manya-Krobo Traditional Area in 2015 and succeeded the former Queen Mother of the Area, Nana Mamle Okleyo, who died in 2012.

  • Nasa: Doug Loverro steps down days before crewed launch

The head of Nasa’s human spaceflight program has stepped down just days before a “historic” launch.

Doug Loverro resigned on Monday, Nasa announced, less than a year after his appointment.

Next week, astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley will travel to the International Space Station (ISS).

The mission, using a rocket and capsule from private firm SpaceX, will be the first crewed mission to orbit to depart from US soil since 2011.

No official reason for Mr Loverro’s departure has been announced, but a leaked copy of an email sent to Nasa employees mentioned a risk taken earlier in the year “because I judged it necessary to fulfil our mission”.

“Now, over the balance of time, it is clear that I made a mistake in that choice for which I alone must bear the consequences,” the message continued.

While Mr Loverro offered no further explanation, he told the Axios news website that his decision to leave the agency was unrelated to the upcoming launch. “I have 100% faith in the success of that mission,” he said.

Mr Loverro was appointed in October last year. His deputy, Ken Bowersox, will become the acting head of human spaceflight.

Next week’s launch, which is set for 27 May, will mark the first time that Nasa has launched people from its own territory since the retirement of the shuttles almost a decade ago. The rocket and spacecraft for next Wednesday’s flight were both designed and built by SpaceX, the private company owned by billionaire Elon Musk.

Loverro had been expected to chair the “flight readiness review” on Thursday, which will check on preparations and clear Behnken and Hurley for the mission. A replacement will now have to step in.

Nasa has been using Russian rockets for crewed flights since 2011 and recently purchased one more ride for later in the year.

In 2017, US President Donald Trump ordered Nasa to plan a crewed mission to the Moon for the first time since 1972. The Artemis mission will see the first woman and the next man step on to the lunar surface and is due to take place by 2024.

  • Man makes money buying his own pizza on DoorDash app

The owner of a pizza restaurant in the US has discovered the DoorDash delivery app has been selling his food cheaper than he does – while still paying him full price for orders.

A pizza for which he charged $24 (£20) was being advertised for $16 on DoorDash – and when he secretly ordered it himself, the app paid his restaurant the full $24 while charging him $16.

He had not asked to be put on the app.

He later found out it was part of a trial to gauge customer demand.

Content strategist Ranjan Roy blogged about the anonymous restaurateur, who is his friend.

Mr Roy said he first heard about the situation in March 2019, when his friend started receiving complaints about deliveries, even though his outlets did not deliver.

At that point , he discovered he had been added to DoorDash – and noticed it was charging a lower price for one of his premium pizzas.

So he ordered 10 pizzas, paid $160 and had them delivered to a friend’s house.

The restaurant was then paid $240 for the order by DoorDash.

The next time, the restaurant prepared his friend’s order by boxing up the pizza base without any toppings, maximising the “profit” from the mismatched prices.

“I was genuinely curious if DoorDash would catch on – but they didn’t,” wrote Mr Roy.

DoorDash did not respond to BBC News’s request for comment.

But Mr Roy said: “We found out afterward that was all the result of a ‘demand test’ by DoorDash.

“They have a test period where they scrape the restaurant’s website and don’t charge any fees to anyone, so they can ideally go to the restaurant with positive order data to then get the restaurant signed on to the platform.

“Third-party delivery platforms, as they’ve been built, just seem like the wrong model, but instead of testing, failing, and evolving, they’ve been subsidised into market dominance.

“You have insanely large pools of capital creating an incredibly inefficient money-losing business model.”

DoorDash is backed by investment giant Softbank, which this week posted a record-breaking loss of nearly $13bn.

Defending the loss, chief executive Masayoshi Son reportedly compared himself to Jesus.

The billionaire is said to have stated during a call with investors that Jesus was “also misunderstood”.

    He later apologised.

  • Brazil recommends chloroquine to treat even mild COVID-19 cases

Brazil’s health ministry recommended Wednesday using chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to treat even mild cases of COVID-19, a treatment President Jair Bolsonaro has pushed for despite a lack of conclusive evidence of their effectiveness.

New federal guidelines released by the ministry recommend doctors prescribe the anti-malarial drugs from the onset of symptoms of coronavirus infection, together with the antibiotic azithromycin.

Patients will be required to sign a waiver acknowledging they have been informed of potential side effects, including heart and liver problems and retina damage.

The two medications have been swept up in a politically charged debate amid the pandemic.

Bolsonaro and his US counterpart Donald Trump, to whom he is often compared, tout them as potential wonder drugs against COVID-19.

Trump even revealed Monday he has been taking hydroxychloroquine daily as a preventive measure.

But some studies have cast doubt on the drugs’ effectiveness and safety against coronavirus.

The health ministry acknowledged that “there are still no meta-analyses of randomized, controlled, blind, large-scale clinical trials of these medications in the treatment of COVID-19.”

However, it said the government had a responsibility to issue guidelines using the information currently available.

Preliminary studies of the drugs in China and France showed promising results against COVID-19.

However, other studies have cast doubt on their effectiveness and raised concerns about the potential for heart, liver and kidney problems, as well as nerve damage.

Brazil’s former health minister Nelson Teich resigned last week after less than a month on the job, reportedly after clashing with Bolsonaro over the far-right president’s insistence on recommending chloroquine against COVID-19.

Bolsonaro, who has compared the new coronavirus to a “little flu” and railed against social distancing measures to fight it, fired Teich’s predecessor, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, also after clashing over how to respond to the pandemic.

Brazil has emerged as the latest flashpoint in the coronavirus pandemic.

It registered more than 1,000 COVID-19 deaths Tuesday, its highest yet, bringing its total death toll to 17,971.

The country now has the third-highest number of infections in the world, with more than 270,000, behind only the United States and Russia.

  • Trump says US topping world virus cases is ‘badge of honour’

President Donald Trump has argued it is “a badge of honor” that the US has the world’s highest number of confirmed Covid-19 infections.

“I look at that as, in a certain respect, as being a good thing because it means our testing is much better,” he said at the White House.

The US has 1.5 million coronavirus cases and nearly 92,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

In second place is Russia, with nearly 300,000 confirmed cases.

What did Trump say? On Monday, Mr Trump was hosting his first cabinet meeting since the US outbreak began.

“By the way,” he told reporters, “you know when you say that we lead in cases, that’s because we have more testing than anybody else.”

“So when we have a lot of cases,” he continued, “I don’t look at that as a bad thing, I look at that as, in a certain respect, as being a good thing because it means our testing is much better.”

He added: “So I view it as a badge of honour. Really, it’s a badge of honour.

“It’s a great tribute to the testing and all of the work that a lot of professionals have done.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, a federal agency, the US had conducted 12.6m coronavirus tests by Tuesday.

“It’s a great tribute to the testing and all of the work that a lot of professionals have done.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, a federal agency, the US had conducted 12.6m coronavirus tests by Tuesday.

Mr Trump was responding to a question about whether he was considering a travel ban on Latin America, Brazil in particular. That country now has the third highest number of confirmed cases, following the US and Russia.

The Democratic National Committee criticised the Republican president’s comments, tweeting that the 1.5 million Covid-19 cases in the US represented “a complete failure of leadership”.

Has the US conducted the most tests? While the US has carried out more tests by volume than any other country, it is not first in the world on a per capita basis, according to Our World in Data, a scientific publication based at Oxford University.

Its chart ranks the US as 16th globally in terms of tests per 1,000 people, ahead of South Korea, but behind the likes of Iceland, New Zealand, Russia and Canada.

Over the past week, the US has been conducting between 300,000 and 400,000 tests daily, according to the Covid Tracking Project, a volunteer-led effort.

But Harvard Global Health Institute director Ashish Jha last week told a congressional hearing: “The US needs more than 900,000 tests every day to safely open up again. We are doing about a third of that.”

The US has also reported the most coronavirus deaths in the world, though on a per capita basis it ranks sixth behind the likes of Belgium, the United Kingdom and France, according to Johns Hopkins University.

US coronavirus testing rates have been criticised on both sides of the aisle.

At a Senate hearing last week, Mitt Romney, a Republican, criticised the country’s testing record, saying it was “nothing to celebrate whatsoever” because, he said, “we treaded water in February and March”.

  • I didn’t divorce my pastor husband, he left me – Agnes Opoku Agyemang

It is most surprising to see marriages of gospel musicians to Pastors hit the rocks, especially, since they are perceived to have a deeper understanding of the Bible which speaks against divorce.

Just like all persons, who are bound to have shortfalls in their relationships and marriages, Ghanaians gospel musicians who are married to pastors are not any different.

In March 2020, there were reports that Agnes Opoku Agyemang, had stated her regrets of marrying Pastor Cudjoe, her ex-husband, explaining that she was not lucky marrying a man of God as she wept and was very unhappy throughout the marriage.

Speaking for the first time about the reports in an interview with Kofi TV, monitored by GhanaWeb, she revealed that it was Pastor Cudjoe of Fire chapel in Kumasi, who opted out of their union but not her.

She reiterated that although she was not going to give much details about her past marriage, she added that being a Pastor’s wife is a calling from God.

“Sometimes being a Pastor’s wife is a calling as well as being a Pastor. The person might think it fetches lots of money. Also, you might return if God doesn’t call you as a Pastor’s wife.

“I didn’t divorce my husband, he left me. God says, he has called many but he will select a few,” she said in the Twi dialect.

The ‘Menpese Mesan M’akyi’ hitmaker advised that one should not be too quick to judge people for their actions and decisions since it is only God who is the best position to do that.

Aside Empress Gifty, Obaapa Christy, Esther Smith, Diana Hopeson, the latest to have her marriage collapse as a gospel musician is Joyce Blessing, though she was not married to a pastor.

  • UK contact tracing will be in place by 1 June, PM says

At Prime Minister’s Questions today, Boris Johnson promised the UK would have in place a “world-beating” system to test and trace people who may have been exposed to coronavirus.

He said 24,000 out of 25,000 contact tracers had already been recruited, referring to teams of people who identify who has been in contact with a person who contracted coronavirus, to notify them so they don’t infect others.

But Mr Johnson did not mention the contact-tracing mobile phone app trialled on the Isle of Wight, which uses Bluetooth to detect and record other app users and notifies you if you’ve been near someone who later develops symptoms.

BBC health correspondent Nick Triggle says that what launches on 1 June will effectively be a prototype track-and-trace system, not a fully functioning one. While contact tracers will be available, the app may not be ready on day one, he adds.

  • Coronavirus: Rolls-Royce to cut 9,000 jobs amid virus crisis

Rolls-Royce has said it will cut 9,000 jobs and warned it will take “several years” for the airline industry to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

The Derby-based firm, which makes plane engines, said the reduction of nearly a fifth of its workforce would mainly affect its civil aerospace division.

“This is not a crisis of our making. But it is the crisis that we face and must deal with,” boss Warren East said.

The bulk of the job cuts are expected to be in the UK at its site in Derby.

Rolls-Royce employs 52,000 people globally and Mr East told the BBC’s Today programme that the company had not yet concluded on “exactly” where the job losses would be, due to having to consult with unions.

But he said: “It’s fair to say that of our civil aerospace business approximately two-thirds of the total employees are in the UK at the moment and that’s probably a good first proxy.”

Rolls-Royce’s civil aerospace business has a number of sites in the UK, but the largest plant is in Derby.

Unite the union said the decision was “shameful opportunism”.

“This company has accepted public money to furlough thousands of workers,” said Unite’s assistant general secretary for manufacturing, Steve Turner.

“Unite and Britain’s taxpayers deserve a more responsible approach to a national emergency. We call upon Rolls-Royce to step back from the brink and work with us on a better way through this crisis.”

Rolls-Royce initially furloughed 4,000 workers in the UK last month. Some 3,700 people remain on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme though which the government pays 80% of a worker’s wage up to £2,500 a month.

But Mr East said: “No government can extend things like furlough schemes for years into the future. We have to look after ourselves and make sure we meet medium term demand.”

  • Man sentenced to death in Singapore via Zoom

A man has been sentenced to death via a Zoom video call in Singapore, as the country remains on lockdown following a spike in Coronavirus cases.

Punithan Genasan, 37, received the sentence on Friday for his role in a drug deal that took place in 2011.

It marks the city’s first case where such a ruling has been done remotely.

Human rights groups argued that pursuing the death penalty at a time when the world is being gripped by a pandemic was “abhorrent”.

The vast majority of court hearings in Singapore have been adjourned until at least 1 June, when the city’s current lockdown period is due to end.

Cases which have been deemed to be essential are being held remotely.

“For the safety of all involved in the proceedings, the hearing for Public Prosecutor v Punithan A/L Genasan was conducted by video-conferencing,” a spokesperson for Singapore’s Supreme Court told Reuters.

Mr Genasan’s lawyer, Peter Fernando, said his client is considering an appeal.

Singapore has a zero-tolerance policy for illegal drugs. In 2013, 18 people were executed – the highest figure in at least two decades, according to Amnesty International.

Of those 18, 11 had been charged with drug-related offenses.

  • Emmanuel Clottey slapped with GH¢5,000 cost as court squashes case against Asante Kotoko

An Accra High Court Financial Division 2 on Wednesday, 20 May, 2020 dismissed Emmanuel Clottey’s case against former club Asante Kotoko and the striker awarded a cost of GH¢ 5,000.

Clottey prayed the court in August 2019 to compel Kotoko to pay the US$180,000 fine imposed on him in 2015 by FIFA as a result of contract breaches against Tunisian side, Esperance.

The former Ghana Premier League goal king asked the court to make Kotoko pay for the salaries and allowances he would have received within the period of his ban by FIFA.

Clottey signed for Asante Kotoko in 2015 but had his status challenged at FIFA.

Esperance claimed they had a running contract with the player at the time he signed for the Porcupine Warriors and won the case.

Kotoko were found guilty for using Clottey in a game for 30 minutes.

It will be recalled that the Ghana Premier League giants recently reached a deal with Esperance to settle the debt which rose to US$ 240,000.

  • North East Region NDC calls for calm as confusion escalates among Nalerigu/Gambaga NPP

As tension continues to mount within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Nalerigu/Gambaga constituency, following the suspension of a parliamentary aspirant, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is calling for calm.

A statement signed by the North East Regional Communication Officer of the NDC, Imoro Abdul Razak, says the call for peace follows recent confusion that rocked the NPP in the new region.

“The verbal tirade, although their stock in trade, being unleashed on each other by their parliamentary candidates has succinctly demonstrated the NPP undemocratic nature,” it read.

“The near clashes between supporters of the suspended aspirant, Peter Baaga and the Local Government Minister Hajia Alimah Mahama sent a signal of bad omen in the region”, the NDC admonished.

The statement added that, although the escalating confusion and chaos within the ruling party is not strange, the NDC appreciates peace and will urge the NPP to show leadership and respect the people of the North East Region.

The NDC also described the incidents leading to the suspension of  Peter Baaga as a clear manifestation of poor leadership and the apparent intolerance currently being exhibited by the Akufo-Addo led administration.

The statement, therefore, called “on the Elders of the NPP to reach out to the warring factions of suspended Aspirant Peter Baaga and Local Government Minister Hajia Alima Mahama to get their commitment to end the vicious circle of heightened tensions in each election that features the duo.”

The NDC in the region also says it has noted the shocking confessions of election rigging and smuggling of fertilisers and other farm inputs to neighboring countries by executives of the ruling party made by Peter Baaga for which reason he was sanctioned.

“The NDC knows and recalls painfully the damning revelations on Tizaa Fm by Peter Wuni Baaga (now suspended aspirant) i.e The NPP in collaboration with the EC, rigged the 2004 parliamentary election for Hajia Alimah Mahama, and President Kuffour in the constituency. The NPP Regional Chairman criminally diverted fertilizer meant for the Planting for Food and Jobs programme to Burkina Faso for a private purposes et al and we will soon contact the appropriate authorities to act on that,” the party hinted.

The opposition party praised “the candor of Mr Peter Wuni Baaga for openly applauding President Mahama and the NDC 2020 parliamentary candidate for having worked on the road network in the East Mamprusi Municipality which has since infuriated the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.”

“In conclusion, the NDC in the light of the foregoing, calls on the NPP National Leadership to take over the affairs of the NPP in the Region for it is on autopilot.

The NDC needs peace to conduct its activities with decorum and to explain to citizens of the region the failed and corrupt practices of the NPP. And the need for change.”

Confusion erupted in the ruling party in the Nalerigu/Gambaga constituency following months of tension between supporters of a former District Chief Executive, Peter Wuni Baaga, and the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hajia Alimah.

Divisions emerged publicly last Thursday following the suspension of Peter Wuni Baaga, a former District Chief Executive and a founding member of the party in the area, after an interview, he granted in response to allegations made against him by Hajia Alimah Mahama and some members of her campaign team, including the regional chairman and the Municipal Chief Executive.

Peter was said to have been accused by Hajia Alimah of stealing and diverting public funds while in office as District Chief Executive and also disrespecting President Akufo-Addo.

The former DCE, who then fired back, accused Hajia Alimah of rigging the 2004 elections that took her to parliament for the first time. He also accused the Local Government and Rural Development Minister of betrayal and witch-hunting him.

Two days after his response, the regional chairman, Nurudeen Fuseini, issued a letter announcing the suspension of the aspirant from the party.
Some supporters of the party in the constituency have however rejected the suspension which they have described as “unconstitutional” and a breach of the fundamental human rights of the aspirant.

They have threatened to stage protest in support of the suspended aspirant. Meanwhile, some 75 members of the party in the constituency have already left to join the opposition NDC, citing the incompetence of the Member of Parliament and the growing confusion in the party.

The law underlines that it is following World Health Organization recommendations to minimise infection in closed and public places where there is a large concentration of people.

  • Cambridge University moves lectures online until next year

Cambridge University will have no face-to-face lectures until summer 2021 at the earliest in response to the coronavirus pandemic, a spokesman confirmed on Wednesday.

Cambridge is the first UK university to set out its plans for the coming academic year starting in September.

“The university is constantly adapting to changing advice as it emerges during the pandemic,” the university said in a statement Tuesday.

“Given that it is likely that social distancing will continue to be required, the university has decided there will be no face-to-face lectures during the next academic year.”

Lectures would continue to be available online.

Smaller teaching groups could also take place in person, the university said, but only as long as they conform to social-distancing requirements.

The university moved all teaching online in March. Exams will also be carried out virtually.

The decision by Cambridge comes as a row has escalated in the UK about whether or not it is safe for students to return to school.

Government ministers plan to partially reopen English primary schools from June 1, but this is being challenged by some unions and local councils over safety concerns.

Britain has the highest death toll in Europe and the second-worst in the world behind the United States.

The government’s official rolling tally, of deaths after positive tests, stood at 35,341 on Tuesday.

But broader statistics including suspected virus deaths took the toll to at least 41,000.

  • 22,683 grams of suspected narcotics intercepted at Ghana-Togo border

A joint operational team has intercepted 53 parcels of suspected marijuana at an unapproved route on the Ghana-Togo border in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.

The parcels concealed in a bail of used clothes weighs about 22,683.2 grams.

GIS officer trying to cut open the bail

The team which included officials from the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) and the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) made the interception during a routine patrol exercise in the Beat 6 border enclave on Saturday, 16 May 2020.

A press release signed by the Officer In-charge of the Volta Regional Public Affairs Unit of the GIS, Asst. Insp. Felix Klu-Adjei indicated the team, however, failed to make any arrests.

“The owners of the contraband, upon seeing the officers advance towards them quickly abandoned the goods and fled into neighbouring Togo”, he stated.

He said that the GIS Aflao Sector Command has launched a manhunt for the suspects with the hope of bringing them to book.

Asst Insp. Klu-Adjei added that the GIS Patrol Border Team made a similar interception of 31 parcels of suspected marijuana 48 hours earlier at the beat 11 border enclave.

He also revealed that the contrabands have since been officially handed over to the NACOB in Aflao for further investigations.

  • Rolls-Royce to cut 9,000 jobs amid coronavirus crisis

Rolls-Royce has said it will cut 9,000 jobs and warned it will take “several years” for the airline industry to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

The firm, which makes engines for planes, said the reduction of nearly a fifth of its workforce would mainly affect its civil aerospace division.

“This is not a crisis of our making. But it is the crisis that we face and must deal with,” boss Warren East said.

The bulk of the job cuts are expected to be in the UK.

Rolls-Royce employs 52,000 people globally and Mr East told the BBC’s Today programme the company had not yet concluded on “exactly” where the job losses would be, due to having to consult with unions.

But he said: “It’s fair to say that of our civil aerospace business approximately two-thirds of the total employees are in the UK at the moment and that’s probably a good first proxy.”

Air travel has ground to a virtual standstill since the coronavirus began spreading across the world and many airlines have announced steep job cuts.

Rolls-Royce said the impact of the pandemic on the company and the whole of the aviation industry “is unprecedented”.

It added that it is “increasingly clear that activity in the commercial aerospace market will take several years to return to the levels seen just a few months ago”.

As well as the job losses, the company said it would cut costs in areas such as its plants and properties.

  • Virus fight just one front against epidemics in Africa

African nations grappling to contain Coronavirus are scrambling to stop the outbreak worsening the impact of other killer diseases.

Across the continent, countries regularly face surges from a raft of diseases that flourish in the humid weather and prey on weak health systems.

Malaria strikes down hundreds of thousands each year, typhoid, measles and cholera are endemic to many areas, tuberculosis and HIV are particularly prevalent in southern Africa and the “meningitis belt” stretches from Senegal to Ethiopia.

Some countries like Nigeria or the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are especially susceptible and were already facing a constant battle on many fronts—even before the arrival of coronavirus.

In these volatile nations, factors from neglected healthcare facilities to rapid population growth, growing numbers flocking to cities, and climate change have combined to make the situation worse.
In DRC, Lassa fever’s far more deadly cousin Ebola has killed 3,000 since an outbreak started in August 2018 and new infections have stopped officials from declaring the crisis over.

Since January 2019 over 6,000 children across the country of 85 million have died from measles and 50,000 have fallen ill with it this year alone, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) says.

    Dire warnings

The World Health Organization (WHO) and other aid groups have sounded repeated alarms about the impact the coronavirus crisis could have on the fight against other diseases.

Malaria deaths could double if measures like mosquito nets are neglected, polio could roar back if vaccination programmes are halted, AIDS and tuberculosis fatalities could reach a million if anti-retroviral therapies are disrupted.

Years of vaccination campaigns have helped to bring some of the deadliest diseases under control—but there are fears that added burdens from coronavirus and challenges of social distancing could interrupt these efforts.

In Nigeria’s chaotic megacity of Lagos, where around 20 million people live crammed together, immunisation rates have reached up to 90 percent thanks to widespread pushes to boost awareness.

But those major successes risk being lost.

“Many medical facilities have closed down, people are afraid to go to the hospitals, and some of the regular vaccination activities are disturbed,” Dr Anisur Rahman Siddique, who heads Unicef’s immunisation programmes in Nigeria, told AFP.

“We need to keep on checking,” he said, pointing especially to a possible rise in measles.

    Polio threat

Officials in numerous countries have warned that a focus on tackling coronavirus could rob attention from other pressing threats.

A lawmaker in Angola called on the government to step up sanitation and fumigation in poor neighbourhoods to maintain the fight against malaria.

Niger’s health minister, Illiassou Mainassara, has promised to distribute eight million mosquito nets and provide preventative treatments to over four million children this year.

Nigeria, one of the last countries in the world to report wild poliovirus infections along with Afghanistan and Pakistan, was set to be declared officially free of the scourge in June after three years without a case.

WHO says that 2,500 of its staff and personnel from partner organisations are still continuing surveillance for any outbreaks of polio in Africa’s most populous nation.

But the “hard choice” was made to halt door-to-door vaccination campaigns that had already been hit by insecurity in the north of the country.

    ‘Business as usual’

But what can be seen as a weakness could actually turn out to be a strength—and the experience of coping with these recurring epidemics could give countries a boost in handling coronavirus.

The same WHO network in Nigeria that has been used to combat polio and other diseases is now be used to help track and test for possible coronavirus outbreaks in remote areas.

In eastern Congo, the epicentre of the country’s Ebola outbreak, around 20 coronavirus cases had been registered by mid-May and the spread seems to have slowed.

“The response against Covid-19 in the east of the country appears to have born fruits,” a government report said.

Christian Happi, a professor at the infectious disease institute at Nigeria’s Redeemer’s University, told AFP that for Africa the fight against coronavirus was just “business as usual”.

“We don’t have the same technologies, we may not have resources, but we have the human skills to fight it: it’s something we are used to,” he said.

“Medical workers are experienced, they know how to manage these kind of emergency situations, there is less panic, fighting epidemics is part of our life.”

In Nigeria, Lassa fever, a haemorrhagic disease mainly spread by rats, has since January killed 200 people from around 5,000 infections—a figure that grows higher each year.
