  • Former Asante Kotoko striker Eric Bekoe supports plans to make GPL autonomous

Former Ghana Premier League top scorer, Eric Bekoe has backed the plans by the
Ghana Football Association to make the top-flight league autonomous.

The championship is currently run by the Premier League Management Committee of the FA, who replaced the Premier League Board (PLB) last year.

According to the former Kotoko striker, an autonomous league will help prevent external interference in the league.

“We should welcome the league being autonomous. The league will be managing itself where no one will say taxpayers money will be used in paying players and other stuff,”

He adds that the Coronavirus pandemic could be a blessing in disguise for Ghana football as we can put a lot of things in the right place.

“The Covid-19 has been a blessing in disguise where we can structure things very well were there can be a bill stating every player will be paid below GH5000.00 which will make them stay in this country to attain the needed competition of the league rather than travelling outside.”

  • Some celebrities see marriage as fashion – Xandy Kamel on why her colleagues end up in divorce

Ghanaian actress Xandy Kamel Mensah has advised celebrities to bear the qualities of patience and love if only they want to be in marriage and not become victims of divorce.

The newly-wedded actress believes celebrities can have a lasting relationship but it is difficult because some of them have not fully understood the meaning of marriage.

According to her, some celebrities wrongly define marriage which results in divorce.

“I think many people have taken marriage as competition or fashion. We don’t pray into the marriage but we need to get something, understanding, patience and love. Money is just a plus. Money only garnishes marriage like salad mixed with mayonnaise,” Xandy Kamel counseled in an interview on ‘Entertainment Ghana’ on Okay FM.

  • I don’t need Xandy to be popular; I’m well known already! – Actress’ husband replies critics

Actress Xandy Kamel Mensah’s husband has responded to critics who think he is unpopular and therefore married Xandy because she is a celebrity.

Mrs. Xandy Kamel Mensah and her husband, Nana Kwaku Mensah Kaninja, a Sports Presenter at Angel TV have since when they got married on Thursday, May 14, 2020 become the cynosure of all eyes.

Some people claim Xandy’s husband to ride on her celebrity status, so he can also be enrolled into the institution of famous people in Ghana.

The husband, reacting to the claims on Okay FM’s ‘Drive Time’ with Abeiku Aggrey Santana, says he doesn’t need Xandy Kamel to make a name because he is already popular in the Sports fratenity.

“I’m also popular in my own world. I just don’t want to be popular like Xandy Kamel or be more popular than her but I’m also popular in my own world. Popular in the sense that I do Sports and many Ghanaians know me. If someone doesn’t know me, it’s because the person doesn’t like Sports. A lot of Ghanaians who follow Sports know me but if I were also acting, maybe I would be at par with her. We’re on the same level but I don’t act in movies,” he said.

  • ‘Tortured Zimbabwe abductees’ may face prosecution

Zimbabwe’s justice minister has threatened to prosecute three female opposition members who allege they were arrested and then abducted from police custody and sexually assaulted.

They say they were beaten and forced to drink each other’s urine.

The three, including an MP, are being treated in hospital for their injuries.

Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said the women made up the story to divert attention from the fact that they broke lockdown rules by attending a protest.

They should be arrested for violating rules aimed at stopping the spread of coronavirus, he said.

“I don’t believe the abduction is genuine,” Mr Ziyambi told the BBC.

Opposition activists allege that abduction and torture remains a tactic of the authorities even after the end the presidency of Robert Mugabe, who was overthrown in 2017.

Cecilia Chimbiri, who is a youth campaigner with the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party, has given graphic testimony to the BBC of how she, MP Joana Mamombe and Netsai Marowa, were maltreated over 24 hours by alleged state agents.

She said that they were stopped at a police checkpoint last Wednesday, as they were returning from a small protest march that they had organised in the capital, Harare, over the number of people going hungry during the coronavirus lockdown.

Two men in police uniforms stepped out an unmarked car, Ms Chimbiri explained, and told them that they were under arrest for flouting restrictions.

“They must have been following us,” she said.

They were then escorted in a convoy to a police station where they were told to get out of their car and into another vehicle as they had gone to the wrong place.

It was then that Ms Chimbiri said men in plain clothes got into the vehicle, pushed their heads down and drove them out of the basement car park.

    ‘Screaming inside the pit’

They were then driven to a location that she later learnt was about 120km (75 miles) north of Harare, where they were thrown into a pit dug into the earth outside and subjected to hours of beatings and sexual assault by five men, the activist said.

“I was praying and screaming inside the pit. At one point, I prayed for a swift death. I was in so much pain,” Ms Chimbiri told the BBC on the phone from her hospital bed.

The three were left on Thursday night at the roadside on the outskirts of Bindura town, north of the capital.

The police have a different version of events.

Despite the fact that private and state-run newspapers reported on Thursday, a day after they went missing, that the police had confirmed the women’s arrest, the police later denied making the statement.

    ‘They broke the lockdown’

The justice minister said it was important to remember that the women had been involved in an illegal protest.

“Firstly there is a pandemic, and the world over people are being told to stay home. They decide to break that,” Mr Ziyambi said.

“The lockdown has created an environment where they are no longer relevant. They wanted relevance. It is diversionary tactic and once they are discharged [from hospital] they must be arrested for breaking the law.”

The women are now under police guard at a private Harare hospital.

The MP’s condition is said to have deteriorated and she was in no condition to speak to the BBC and Ms Marowa was asleep when the BBC tried to contact her.

    ‘Rise in abductions’

Dr Fortune Nyamande, who is the chairperson of Zimbabwe Doctors for Human Rights and is treating them, said a trend of such abductions had been witnessed over the last two years.

He refused to divulge the extent of their injuries, but said that he had been been trying to get them in a stable psychological state while attending to the physical injuries.

“We have attended to almost 1,000 cases of these extra-judicial measures with the same modus operandi. They seem to be on the rise, and it is time that the state holds whoever is doing that accountable,” he told the BBC.

But Ms Chimibiri has little faith that will happen.

Umbrella group the Human Rights NGO Forum says that since President Emmerson Mnangagwa came into power in November 2017, it has documented and verified a series of organised violent incidents.

These include 24 extra-judicial killings, 23 cases of sexual assault, 92 abductions and beatings, 88 gunshots wounds or dog bites and 893 cases of assault.

The government has suggested that a third force or hidden hand is behind the spate of abductions under President Mnangagwa, who replaced Mr Mugabe.

The accusation is that people are bent on discrediting his government, whose investigations have yielded no arrests in the majority of cases.

    ‘Forced to drink sewage’

During the Mugabe-era enforced disappearance was commonplace.

Itai Dzamara, a critic of the former president, was taken in an unmarked vehicle from a barber shop in 2015. He has now been missing for five years. At the time, the government described his abduction and disappearance as staged-

  • Two soldiers, five volunteers killed in Burkina attack

Two Burkina Faso soldiers and five civilian defence volunteers have been killed during an ambush on a military patrol in the restive north of the country, security sources said Tuesday.

The attack occurred on Monday as soldiers from the military detachment in Banh in Loroum province were carrying out a patrol in the area, the sources said.

“Two soldiers were killed along with five civilians,” a security source told AFP.

    DEFENCE VOLUNTEERS

Another security source said the civilian casualties were “defence volunteers who were with the military unit during the patrol,” adding two soldiers also died.

The source said four others in the patrol were wounded, without giving further details.

Al-Qaeda-affiliated jihadist alliance GSIM claimed responsibility for the attack, claiming to have killed “nine soldiers” in an ambush and taken weapons and vehicles, in a text sent to AFP late Tuesday.

The Mali-based GSIM (Group to Support Islam and Muslims) comprises several different jihadist groups in the Sahel.

    ISLAMIC INSURGENCY

On May 11, militants killed eight Burkinabe soldiers during an attack close to the Niger border in Yagha province, security sources said at the time.

Burkina Faso is part of a regional effort to battle an Islamist insurgency, along with neighbouring Mali and Niger, Mauritania and Chad.

However, the West African country’s under-equipped and poorly trained military have been unable to stem the violence despite help from France, which has 5,000 troops in the region.

According to UN figures, jihadist attacks in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger left nearly 4,000 people dead last year. Some 800,000 people have been displaced since 2015.

  • Lamu Senator wants probe into the shooting of his father by police

Lamu Senator, Anwar Loitiptip, has called for investigations into an incident where his father was shot and seriously wounded by a police officer allegedly for failing to wear a facemask at their rural home in Laikipia North Sub County last Sunday.

The Senator, speaking on Tuesday in Nanyuki town said that his father David Kiwaka 65 was shot on the thigh after a confrontation with five police officers from Doldol station as he waited to board a vehicle to Nanyuki who roughed him up before the shooting incident.

The incident is said to have happened at Kiwanja Ndege area at 12.15 pm before Kiwaka was rushed to Nanyuki Cottage hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

“My father was shot on the leg in broad daylight at noon for allegedly failing to wear a facemask. Does failing to put on a mask warrant someone to be shot?” posed the Senator.

Loitiptip adds that the officers pounced on his father with kicks and blows as he pleaded with them to let him retrieve his facemask from the bag he was carrying but they would hear none of that and when he attempted to escape he was shot on the leg.

“We have since established that police constable Joseph Watila fired that shot that injured my old man and now we want the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the National Police Service to get to the root of the matter expeditiously so that justice can be done,” the Senator said.

He added that the police had a mandate to follow the rule of law and wondered why they would shoot someone for failing to put on a facemask.

When contacted over the issue, Laikipia County Police Commander Maxwel Nyaema however disputed mzee Kiwaka was shot for failure to wear a facemask but said that the victim was part of a group of members of the public who attempted to rescue a suspect who had been arrested at Kiwanja ndege area.

Nyaema added that Kiwaka stabbed one of the police officers with a Maasai sword on the hand prompting the confrontation that saw him get shot.

“The officers had gone to arrest a suspect named Peter Mureithi for assaulting his wife, but immediately he was nabbed about 10 members of the public descended upon them in a bid to rescue the suspect leading to the confrontation,” Nyaema said.

He further added that investigation into the incident were still ongoing.

  • Brazil deaths surge as virus pandemic bites Latin America

Brazil saw its highest number of coronavirus deaths yet Tuesday as more than four months after Covid-19 first emerged in China, the force of the pandemic was beginning to hit hard in Latin America.

Brazil’s surge came as the World Health Organisation agreed to launch an investigation into its response to the disease, whose unyielding march across the globe since last year has left more than 320,000 dead and shattered economies.

The illness dismissed by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as a “little flu” claimed 1,179 lives there in the past 24 hours, the first time Brazil’s daily toll has exceeded 1,000.

    INFECTIONS RISING

Infections already the third-highest globally are also climbing by the thousands, with the outbreak in the world’s sixth-largest country set to accelerate, and the peak not expected until early June.

Chile also reported a spike in cases, and deployed soldiers in poor neighbourhoods in the capital Santiago following violent protests against food shortages and unemployment.

In the US the outlook remained bleak, with a new modelling average released Tuesday suggesting virus deaths could surpass 113,000 by mid-June, underscoring America’s status as the nation worst affected by the pandemic and piling more pressure on President Donald Trump.

    US DEATHS

The US has recorded more than 91,000 deaths and 1.5 million cases of Covid-19, by far the most of any country.

Britain has the second highest number of deaths at more than 41,000; while Russia has the second highest number of infections, more than 300,000.

Trump has fiercely defended his administration’s response to the crisis, repeatedly deflecting blame for the virus’s spread on to Beijing and the World Health Organisation.

On Monday he accused the WHO of being a “puppet” of China, and threatened to make permanent a temporary freeze on US funding to the body.

    BEIJING HITS BACK

Beijing hit back Tuesday, with the foreign ministry accusing the US of trying to “use China as an issue to shirk responsibility and bargain over its international obligations to the WHO”.

    Russia also denounced Trump’s threat.

“We are against breaking everything there is for the sake of one state’s political or geopolitical preferences,” deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted as saying by news agency Interfax.

    EU BACKING

The European Union backed the WHO too, saying it was “not the time for finger pointing” — putting Brussels once again in opposition to Washington when it comes to Trump’s treatment of international organisations.

With the row threatening the global response to the pandemic, WHO countries adopted a resolution calling for an “impartial, independent and comprehensive evaluation” of the international response, and the measures taken by the agency.

Both the United States and China voted for the resolution, brought by the European Union at the WHO’s annual assembly, despite earlier fears that the tensions might make a full consensus impossible.

    FINDING BALANCE

While the political row rages, countries around the world are trying to find a balance between bringing their economies back to life and risking a second wave of the disease.

The World Bank warned Tuesday that the crisis threatens to push some 60 million people into extreme poverty. The bank anticipates a five percent contraction in the world economy this year, with severe effects on the poorest countries.

In the US, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the American economy risks suffering “permanent damage” the longer the lockdown continues. US home-building meanwhile plunged by 30 percent.

    UNEMPLOYMENT

Fresh data also showed the number of unemployed in Britain soared nearly 70 per cent to 1.3 million in three months to March.

The economic damage caused by the virus has led to unprecedented emergency stimulus measures by governments and central banks, and the latest came from Europe where France and Germany proposed a fund worth 500 billion euros.

The path back to normality is slow, however.

Football players in England’s Premier League began returned to limited training on Tuesday, but the league suffered a blow when it emerged there had been six positive tests among players.

    DROP IN EMISSIONS

One effect of the lockdowns has been a drop in emissions from fossil fuels that cause global warming, with a 17 percent reduction globally in carbon pollution in April and a predicted drop of seven percent in 2020, research in Nature Climate Change said Tuesday.

However this would still “make barely a dent in the ongoing build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere,” said Richard Betts, head of climate impacts research at Britain’s Met Office Hadley Centre.

Experts have warned that the social distancing measures that have affected more than half of humanity will remain necessary until a vaccine or viable treatment is found.

    VACCINE

The global race to find a vaccine got a boost Monday when results from a trial by US biotech firm Moderna sparked optimism.

In China, meanwhile, scientists at Peking University have said they are developing a drug that can help stop the pandemic by using antibodies that can neutralise the virus.

Trump, for his part, defended his bombshell announcement Monday that he was taking hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug that his own government’s experts have said is not suitable for fighting the coronavirus.

“It doesn’t harm you,” he insisted during a Cabinet meeting at the White House Tuesday, adding that it “seems to be an extra line of defense.”

  • Emmanuel Clottey gets GH¢5,000 as court squashes case against Asante Kotoko

An Accra High Court Financial Division 2 on Wednesday, 20 May, 2020 dismissed Emmanuel Clottey’s case against former club Asante Kotoko and the striker awarded a cost of GH¢ 5,000.

Clottey prayed the court in August 2019 to compel Kotoko to pay the US$180,000 fine imposed on him in 2015 by FIFA as a result of contract breaches against Tunisian side, Esperance.

The former Ghana Premier League goal king asked the court to make Kotoko pay for the salaries and allowances he would have received within the period of his ban by FIFA.

Clottey signed for Asante Kotoko in 2015 but had his status challenged at FIFA.

Esperance claimed they had a running contract with the player at the time he signed for the Porcupine Warriors and won the case.

Kotoko were found guilty for using Clottey in a game for 30 minutes.

It will be recalled that the Ghana Premier League giants recently reached a deal with Esperance to settle the debt which rose to US$ 240,000.

  • Dacosta vows to fight for a starting spot at Kotoko after failed Legon Cities move

Asante Kotoko defender Empem Dacosta has vowed to fight for a starting spot at the club after his failed move to Legon Cities FC.

Dacosta was expected to make the switch to the Royals before the transfer window ended for more playing time but the deal did not materialized.

The former Karela United defender says he’s glad that the Porcupine Warriors blocked the move as he desperately wants to improve both on the pitch and off the field.

“I am glad that my move was stopped and that I am back into the team,” Dacosta told Kotoko Express App.

“The team would not have taken those steps if I did everything right. I admit that I brought it upon myself and now I have vowed to rewrite everything. I do not want to leave and so I have to fight back and prove to the technical bench that they can trust me in me.”

“I have looked at myself in the mirror and reflected on all the games I played; the things I did right and otherwise.

“It is a great opportunity that I have here and I desperately want to improve both on and off the field, and play according to the instructions of the coach to keep my place in the squad.”

  • Two more die from meningitis in Ghana

Two more persons have died from the outbreak of meningitis in the Upper West and Upper East regions.

This is according to the Minister of Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu.

With the update, the total number of deaths from the disease in Ghana now stands at 45, with over 315 people infected in both regions.

Giving an update on the outbreak in Parliament on Tuesday, the Health Minister said the lack of a vaccine for the particular strain of the disease has made its management difficult.

“We have unfortunately recorded two more deaths since the last count two weeks ago, bringing the total number of deaths to 45 deaths. No death was recorded in both weeks 19 and 20,” he said.

Some residents of the Upper West Region are calling on the government to release vaccines for the disease, believing that will be the surest way to halt the increasing spate of the endemic and its related deaths in the region.

But according to the Ghana Health Service, the current outbreak of meningitis in the region is caused by a new strain of bacteria that has no vaccine.

It, however, indicated that even though there is no vaccine for this strain causing the outbreak, there is an effective treatment upon early reporting and initiation of the said treatment.

    Cerebrospinal Meningitis

The disease is an inflammation of the meninges of both brain and spinal cord specifically an infectious often epidemic and fatal meningitis caused by the meningococcus called also cerebrospinal fever.

It is an air-borne disease that is most feared because it is transmittable, fatal and spreads at an extremely fast pace.

The disease has up to 50% death rate if not treated.

    Symptoms

    • Fever
    • Headache
    • Neck stiffness
    • Confusion or altered consciousness
    • Vomiting
    • Inability to tolerate light or loud noises

Some forms of meningitis are preventable by

    • Immunization with the meningococcal, mumps, pneumococcal, and Hib vaccines.
    • Promptly giving antibiotics and sometimes antiviral drugs.
    • Corticosteroids can also be used to prevent complications from excessive inflammation

  • South Africa health minister fights Covid-19 lockdown criticism

South African Health Minister Zweli Mkhize on Tuesday fought off criticism against the Covid-19 lockdown, saying the measure has effectively stalled the exponential spread of the coronavirus.

With the lockdown, South Africa’s healthcare sector has won time to prepare for the rising wave of infections and deaths, Mr Mkhize said.

“Had we done nothing, estimates show that by this point, as many as 80,000 South Africans would have been infected, and nearly 2,000 of our brothers and sisters would have lost their lives,” the minister said, citing scientific models and estimates.

    CRITICISM

He was responding to rising criticism from the opposition that some lockdown restrictions are too harsh, nonsensical and not based on scientific principles, and thus should be brought to an end.

The criticism comes at a time when the Western Cape province accounts for 60 percent of the national cumulative cases, with cases increasing exponentially on a daily basis as compared to the rest of the country, Mr Mkhize said in a statement.

The Western Cape province is governed by the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA), which is spearheading the campaign to halt the lockdown.

As of Tuesday, South Africa has recorded 17,200 confirmed Coronavirus cases, up by 767 from Monday, and 312 deaths, an increase of 26, said Mr Mkhize.

    EPICENTRE

The Western Cape remains the epicentre of the Covid-19 pandemic with 10,639 cases and 187 deaths.

“Our mortality rate of 1.8 percent remains well below the global average, which is currently 6.6 percent, and our recovery rate is 42.4 percent, which is above the global average,” he said.

“Had we not traded freedom for time, hospitals would now be overwhelmed, and our concern would have been drawn away from saving lives by the need to excavate mass graves for those we would have lost,” Mr Mkhize said.

    WARNING

He warned against ending the lockdown abruptly, saying if people are allowed to flood back to the way life was before, infections would surge, effectively undoing everything that has been sacrificed thus far.

In the weeks to come, different areas will experience different levels of lockdown, according to Mr Mkhize.

This district-based approach is seen as the most practical and implementable measure to balance the epidemiology of the virus with the economic risks of a continuous hard lockdown, he said.

Districts with low transmissions will be put on a vigilance programme to maintain low levels of the virus infection while those with high transmissions will be classified as hotspots where restrictions are necessary and strong teams of medical experts will be deployed, the health minister said.

  • Road crashes drop between January and April 2020

With the exception of one, all indicators of road traffic crashes have recorded reductions ranging from 0.65 to 23.63% in the first four months of this year 2020 compared to the same period last year.

This is attributable to the COVID-19 restrictions, including the three-week lockdown of Greater Accra, Greater Kumasi in Ashanti Region and Kasoa in the Central Region between March and April this year.

Restrictions on social and public gatherings, as well as urging people to stay home if they do not have anything doing in town, led to a drastic reduction in the movement of vehicles, thereby reducing accidents.

738 killed in first 4 months this year

Data compiled by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service indicates that the number of persons killed recorded a 13.07% reduction from 849 in the first four months of last year to 738 during the same period this year.

    Regional breakdown of deaths

The regional breakdown of deaths is Ashanti 127, Central 103, Eastern 101, Accra 75, Bono East 74, Tema 45, Western 37, Volta 37, Northern 25, Western North 24, Bono 22, Ahafo 17, Upper East 15, Upper West 13, Oti 12, Savanna nine, and North East two.

In January 2020, the number of commuters who died through road traffic crashes witnessed a 10.5% jump to 222 compared to the 201 killed in January 2019.

Similarly, the number killed dropped from 210 in February 2019 to 171 in February 2020, representing an 18.60% drop.

    29.10% decline in March deaths

The number of commuters killed in March 2020 slumped by 29.10% to 202 compared with the 285 killed in March 2019.

A 6.5% decline in the number of commuters killed was recorded in April 2020 as the figure dropped to 143 from the 153 in 2019.

The number of pedestrian knockdowns dropped by 23.63% from 1,270 in 2019 to 769 this year.

    203 Pedestrians killed this year

Out of the 738 killed in the first four months of this year, 203 were pedestrians compared to the 263 killed in 2019.

Similarly, the number of persons injured also recorded a 0.65% reduction from 4,640 last year to 4,670 in the same period this year.

Shockingly, motorcycle crashes jumped by 14.27% from 1,444 in 2019 to 1,650 in the first four months of 2020.

The statistics revealed that motorcycle accidents killed 284 people and injured 1,364.

1.04% reduction in vehicles involved in crashes

The data showed that the total number of vehicles involved in crashes reduced from 7,404 last year to 7,327 this year, representing a 1.04% reduction.

Accidents involving private vehicles killed 153 commuters and injured 1,029 in the first four months of this year.

Road traffic crashes involving private vehicles dropped by 7.96% from 3,229 in 2019 to 2,972.

The statistics showed that commercial vehicles killed 301 while injuring 2,277 commuters.

0.89% drop in commercial vehicles involved in crashes

The total number of commercial vehicles involved in crashes dipped slightly by 0.89% from 2,729 last year to 2,705.

The total number of crashes reported dropped by 2.51% from 4,498 in 2019 to 4,385 this year.

  • 7,000 evicted from slums in Kenya despite coronavirus pandemic

Kenyan authorities have forcibly evicted more than 7,000 people from land in Nairobi slums over the last month, defying a court order.

Authorities say they demolished homes because they were built on public land, but critics say mass evictions during a pandemic are inhumane and could further spread the Coronavirus. Forty-two-year-old Daniel Ndungu saw the three tractors coming before his home was demolished last week.

“We saw police officers coming into the area,” he said. “They blocked the road and left the only one used by tractors. At around nine they started demolition. They didn’t care whether there were children in the house or anything else. They began demolition.”

Defying a court order, authorities on Friday forcibly evicted Ndungu’s family and other Nairobi slum dwellers, making them homeless in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. Ndungu says he has nowhere to go and no money to move, so he will stay in the cold and wait.

Others moved into the crowded dwellings of friends and relatives. The evictions, which started in April, left more than 5,000 people homeless earlier this month in Nairobi’s Kariobangi neighbourhood.

Government tractors descend on homes in Ruai area in Nairobi. Families had little time to salvage their belongings.

The state-run Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NSWSC) claims ownership of the land and says the families have been occupying it illegally since 2008.

“People are told this in advance: You are sitting on public land, there is a project that is terminating here, we may probably open up and open sewage in this direction,” said Fred Matiangi, Interior minister. “People know this but, then people either … don’t move or just continue staying there.”

Thirty-seven-year-old butcher Hussein Wako says he has government receipts showing he owns the land he was forced to leave. But public land is too often sold illegally in Kenya, leaving those who were cheated out of their money like Wako homeless.

“They demolished our home and poor people’s homes,” Wako said. “I slept in the cold for two days, and there is a coronavirus pandemic. They told us to go back home when we demonstrated against the demolition. They disrupted it and tear-gassed us.”

A small riot erupted earlier this month as the evicted clashed with police in Kariobangi and set fire to cars and tires. A Kenyan high court ordered a halt to further demolitions until a petition by residents is heard in June. But for the thousands of Kenyans already left homeless, and those still being evicted, there is little hope for justice.

  • Kwabena Yeboah courts government support for GFA, local clubs

President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), Kwabena Yeboah wants government to extend a helping hand to the Ghana Football Association and the local football clubs during these challenging times for clubs.

The CoronaVirus pandemic has caused a shutdown of all football activities in Ghana leading to the GFA and the clubs suffering financial implications.

Most clubs are struggling to cope with the financial strain this period has brought and have already initiated steps to enforce certain cost cutting measures.

Featuring prominently among such interventions is the idea of implementing pay cuts which has been widely criticized.

Kwabena Yeboah believes that for the football clubs to survive, government will need offer them support by way of the COVID-19 stimulus package.

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports and the central government must in a way try and come to the aid of the football association and by extension the clubs to ensure their survival,” he told the PM Express Show on Joy News.

“Because there is absolutely no way that if they do not benefit from the form of stimulus package from the central government, these clubs can survive. The only way these clubs is for the central government to come to their aid” he continued.

Dr Gillian Bougee, a Paediatrician and Head of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Bolgatanga hospital has narrated how she closely slipped off the cold hands of death when she fell severely ill with the coronavirus.

  • Selecting committed, disciplined players key to winning AFCON – Herve Renard

Two-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament-winning coach, Herve Renard has revealed that selecting disciplined players is the key to conquering the continent instead of presenting best players.

Speaking to TV3 on his success, the French tactician has shared that it is better to leave out top players who will harm the team spirit in the camp when going to the AFCON tournament.

“When you make the mistake of selecting a player because he is good and not disciplined, you will fail.

“So it is better to leave that player out and go for the one who contributes to good team spirit”, Herve Renard said.

According to him, players that play at the prestigious tournament should be players that will be ready to play for the flag of their country.

“You have to play for the flag of the country. In Africa, life stops for football. So there is passion for that. So as a player or a coach you need to think about them.

“You need to play for them to make them proud as a country. It is difficult to get your hands off the AFCON trophy because everybody wants it. But, if the people get behind the team, which is an important thing to do, then it is possible”, Renard added.

The gaffer led Zambian to AFCON triumph in 2012 and coached Ivory Coast to win the title in 2015.

  • Pyramids FC wants to keep Ghana striker John Antwi

Egyptian top-flight side Pyramids FC has no plans of parting ways with Ghanaian international John Antwi, footballghana.com can report.

The highly-rated striker joined Pyramids in 2019 on the back of an outstanding spell with Misr El-Makasa which lasted 3 years.

At the beginning of the 2019/2020 football season in Egypt before the Coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis forced the campaign to be suspended, John Antwi displayed his qualities but not fully.

In the midst of the current situation, clubs have started planning for the next season not knowing what will really happen to this one.

According to sources, though Pyramids FC will be required to reduce the number of foreign players in their team, they have no plans of adding a striker.

“The foreign striker will be a rejected option, regardless of whether or not the clause of reducing the number of foreign players in the Egyptian league”, a close source to the club has shared.

That means that the Ghana forward John Antwi is safe because the club will not need to offload him to make room for an Egyptian attacker.

  • I didn’t believe juju existed in football until I suffered a strange knee injury – Moro Alhassan

Former Black Satellite midfielder Moro Alhassan says his perception about black magic in football changed after he sustained a strange knee injury.

Alhassan, who graduated from Genoa’s youth academy, has been on loan at Italian Serie C side Carrarese FC since 2015.

The 26-year-old has however not played any football since picking a knee injury in 2017 while playing for the club.

According to Alhassan, he went back to his parent club Genoa for treatment but no trace of injury was detected.

He disclosed that he later realized the injury was the handiwork of someone after returning to Ghana to seek for local treatment.

“The injury started at Carrarese where I had a knee pain without a kick from any player.”

“It was a game against Pizza with two games to end the season.”

“It was one knee and later it affected the other.”

“I returned to my parent club Genoa for several scans on my knee but nothing was found.”

“I later left for home [Ghana] and I am the type who does not believe in anything spiritual.”

“But when I returned to Ghana for treatment was when I realised spirituality existed.” Moro Alhassan told Adamu Muftawu.

  • Four ex-officials of NSA to answer questions in AG’s report

The National Sports Authority (NSA) will extend invitations to some of its retired officials to answer questions on the questions raised in the Auditor-Generals report with regards to misappropriation of funds of the authority.

Information gathered by the GNA Sports reveals that, the decision to invite the retired officials who served as Director Generals or in Acting capacity follows the duration of the accounts being queried.

According to the AG’s report, the misappropriation of funds was captured in the period between 2012 and 2017.

In view of this, the invitations will be extended to Messrs Worlanyo Agrah, Joe Kpenge, and Robert Oduro Sarfo, with Madam Alice Attipoe, who also played an acting role during her tenure.

The GNA Sports, however, gathered the NSA was not happy with the conduct of the A-G since they were not given the benefit of response on the report.

A deep throat source said, they have not even seen a copy of the report let alone responding to it.

“We have not yet received the report but it is being discussed in the media. Under normal circumstances we are given the opportunity to read and respond before it is made public.

“We are going to issue an official response to the report in due course,” the source told the GNA Sports.

It would be noted that the AG reports made a number of fundings against the NSA among which includes failure to use monies meant for renovation for the organization of the National Sports Festival (NSA).

The NSA is expected to refund GHC180, 494 to the state.

  • Coronavirus: World Health Organization members agree response probe

World Health Organization (WHO) member states have agreed to set up an independent inquiry into the global response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The resolution, approved without objection by the WHO’s 194-member annual assembly meeting virtually in Geneva, also allows for the inquiry to look into the health body’s own role.

The United States in particular has been highly critical of its response.

The EU presented the resolution on behalf of 100 nations.

    What is in the resolution?

It calls for an “impartial, independent and comprehensive evaluation” of the international response.

This will also focus on the WHO’s “timelines pertaining to the Covid-19 pandemic”. The body has faced criticism that it was late to declare a health emergency.

The resolution also calls for the world to ensure “transparent, equitable and timely access” to any treatments or vaccines, and pushes for the WHO to investigate the “source of the virus and the route of introduction to the human population”.

“As I see no requests for the floor, I take it that there is no objection and the resolution is therefore adopted,” declared the assembly’s president, Keva Bain, the Bahamas ambassador.

Why is the WHO under pressure?

President Donald Trump has labelled the organisation a “puppet” of China and suspended funding for the WHO. The US is the largest donor.

He has also accused China of trying to cover up the outbreak – something it strongly rejects – and said the WHO had failed to hold Beijing to account.

The president on Monday published a letter he sent to WHO head Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus outlining specific issues the US has.

  • Dan Quaye rips into ‘hijacker’ Togbe Afede IV for Hearts of Oak’s trophy drought

Ex-Hearts of Oak defender Dan Quaye has launched a scathing attack on the club’s board chairman Togbe Afede XIV and blamed him for their trophyless run.

The six-time Ghana Premier League accuses the traditional ruler, who is also the CEO of Strategic African Securities (SAS), of running a one-man show at the club.

In 2012, Togbe Afede XIV was appointed chair of the club’s board after acquiring majority shares [40 per cent] after a floatation exercise to raise 2.5 million Ghana cedis.

Under his reign, Hearts of Oak have gone nine years without a trophy and that has decimated his efforts despite the massive financial injections.

Quaye, a member of the 2000 CAF Champions League and 2001 CAF Super Cup teams, explained why the club have not won a title since 2009.

”It’s because the kind of people who are running the club,” Quaye told Ghanasportspage.

”The Hearts of Oak, it doesn’t belong to Togbe, the club belongs to supporters but now it’s him who has hijacked the club, so I think the shares they floated did not help Hearts of Oak, because I feel that when we won the Champions League and everything we won we did it with hunger.

”So I feel the shares they floated is very wrong, like why don’t [Asante] Kotoko float shares, that’s why Hearts of Oak and [Great] Olympics are suffering, Olympics are also suffering partly because of the shares they floated.”

  • Coronavirus: Anger grows for stranded crew on forgotten cruises

When Caio Saldanha and his fiancée Jessica Furlan arrived in the US in early March, they were looking forward to a new life working onboard a lavish cruise ship.

Working on Royal Caribbean’s Celebrity Infinity was supposed to be a fresh start, the next chapter in their lives together.

On 13 March, the date of the cruise’s departure, the ship became their home. Little did they know then, it would prove to be their prison.

A day after the couple, from São Paulo, Brazil, boarded, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a no-sail order for all cruise ships. On the same day, Royal Caribbean canceled all its operations around the world. In just 24 hours, the coronavirus pandemic had upended their lives.

“This was the first day,” Mr Saldanha, a 31-year-old DJ, told the BBC. “It was a shocking surprise. This was not the plan. It was a nightmare.”

More than two months later, Mr Saldanha and his 29-year-old fiancée remain stranded at sea, albeit on a different cruise ship. They desperately want to go home but to their frustration, they, like tens of thousands of other cruise-crew members, have been unable to do so.

While cruise passengers were gradually repatriated through March and April, many crew members stayed behind. Cruise operations were initially paused for 30 days – ample time, it seemed, for the pandemic to blow over. The pandemic did no such thing, leaving crew members in limbo as 30 days turned into 40, 50, 60 and more.

The CDC extended its no-sail order and countries, concerned about the spread of the coronavirus, shut down their ports to cruise ships.

With no end to the pandemic in sight, there are now an estimated 54,200 crew members on board 85 cruise ships in US waters, the US Coast Guard told the BBC. Many more are stranded at sea elsewhere. In an article on 17 May, the Miami Herald newspaper put the number at more than 100,000 around the world.

Royal Caribbean, a US-based company, says it has arranged for British crew members to be flown home from Miami. A chartered plane carrying Royal Caribbean staff landed at Heathrow Airport on Tuesday afternoon.

But given the numbers, bringing everyone home has proved logistically challenging for cruise firms. US operators must abide by strict CDC health requirements for repatriating crew on special charter flights.

Their ability to uphold that responsibility has been called into question by crew in recent weeks. The recent deaths of several crew members has deepened the sense of unease.

Last month, a crew member went overboard from Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas ship. The company told the BBC it was “assisting authorities with their investigation”, but did not confirm the person had died.

More recently another firm, Princess Cruises, said a Ukrainian crew member had died after apparently jumping from the Regal Princess near the Netherlands.

One Canadian crew member says the deaths have heightened anxiety on board Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of the Seas, where protests erupted last week. The 36-year-old, who does not wish to be named, says “the atmosphere was very tense”.

“I personally didn’t go out much. I didn’t want to be involved with it because people were quite angry,” the Canadian crew member told the BBC.

Hundreds of protesters gathered on the deck, where they hung banners bearing aggrieved messages. One, draped over the entrance to the swimming pool, read: “How many more suicides do we need?”

No suicides have been confirmed by Royal Caribbean or any other cruise-ship operators. Royal Caribbean says a confidential mental health helpline is available for crew to call 24 hours a day.

The spark for the protests, according to the Canadian crew member, was the postponement of a plan to repatriate staff. He says for some employees, repatriation arrangements had been delayed or changed several times, causing confusion and anger. On one ship, Romanian crew members held a hunger strike in protest.

Jim Walker, a Miami-based maritime lawyer who is assisting crew, says the cruise operator has “calmed everyone down”, but adds that many were “still in the dark”.

“Legally, the repatriation of people is one of the most fundamental, long-standing maritime rights there are. You can’t keep people hostages on a ship. You can’t abandon them at sea,” Mr Walker told the BBC.

On Monday night, Denise Gruby, the mother of a British crew member, said her son had all but given up hope of being flown home. She said her son, 37-year-old entertainer Christopher Gruby, had opted to stay on board the Majesty of the Seas, which is due to depart from Miami to Southampton on Tuesday.

“They’ve just been abandoned. It must be an awful position to be in,” Ms Gruby told the BBC.

Other crew members have been more fortunate. A Romanian employee, who wished to remain anonymous, says Royal Caribbean paid for him to fly home on 22 February. He expected to be reunited with his boyfriend, who also worked for the company, a few months later. But the agonising wait goes on.

“My boyfriend is trapped on board the Majesty of the Seas. I can see that he’s not in the best mood, but I’m trying to cheer him up,” he says.

  • France’s Macron loses majority as defectors form new party

The party of French President Emmanuel Macron has lost its outright majority in parliament, after a group of MPs broke away to form a new party.

Ecology, Democracy, Solidarity will be largely formed of seven MPs from La République en Marche (On the Move) and other ex-supporters of the president.

The defecting MPs want to focus on green issues and social inequality.

But their decision leaves Mr Macron’s party with 288 seats, one short of a majority in the 577-seat lower house.

French commentators said La République en Marche (LREM) still had the backing of two other political allies, the centrist MoDem as well as Agir from the centre-right, which together make up another 56 seats in the National Assembly.

There is even a chance that the party could regain its absolute majority if another defector who leaves the assembly is replaced by a pro-Macron MP.

The Macron camp has been plagued by a series of defections in recent months, and French media said the seven latest departing MPs had come under intense pressure to stay.

Two MPs who had originally planned to join EDS backed down at the last minute, Le Figaro reported.

The new party is not a major blow to Mr Macron electorally, and allies dismissed the moves as part of the “tribulations of parliamentary life”.

But it is further evidence of dissatisfaction among the president’s MPs, who were swept into the National Assembly in June 2017, weeks after his whirlwind presidential victory.

  • I will never divorce – Newlywed actress Xandy Kamel

Newlywed actress Xandy Kamel Mensah says she will enjoy a long-lasting marriage with her husband, Nana Kwaku Mensah Kaninja of Angel TV.

The actress tied the knot with Kwaku Mensah Kaninja, a Sports Presenter at Angel TV, few days ago.

While some people have rained congratulatory messages on them, others predict their marriage will end in tears.

Reacting to the pessimistic comments in an interview on Neat FM’s ‘Entertainment Ghana’, Xandy Kamel told host Ola Michael that nothing worse will happen in her marriage, assuring all and sundry that she will be married for a lifetime.

According to her, people are wishing her bad luck because they think she is a crazy girl, but the point they’re missing is she doesn’t carry her crazy persona into the relationship with her lover and that she is a submissive wife.

She also believes the doubts are as a result of the little or no knowledge that people have about her husband.

“You don’t know the kind of man I am with. This is a man who is ready to take the storm with me. This is a man who is ready to go through everything with me. The things he has even borne while we were in relationship, I’m sure it’s even greater than what to come and we’re ready for the journey. Any man who ends up with Xandy can marry any other woman in this world,” she said.

In view of this, Mrs. Xandy Kamel Mensah is throwing a challenge to interested Ghanaians to put a monitoring device on her marriage to see how long she and her husband will be together.

  • EasyJet admits data of nine million hacked

EasyJet has admitted that a “highly sophisticated cyber-attack” has affected approximately nine million customers.

It said email addresses and travel details had been stolen and that 2,208 customers had also had their credit card details “accessed”.

The firm has informed the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office while it investigates the breach.

EasyJet first became aware of the attack in January.

It told the BBC that it was only able to notify customers whose credit card details were stolen in early April.

“This was a highly sophisticated attacker. It took time to understand the scope of the attack and to identify who had been impacted,” the airline told the BBC.

“We could only inform people once the investigation had progressed enough that we were able to identify whether any individuals have been affected, then who had been impacted and what information had been accessed.”

Stolen credit card data included the three digital security code – known as the CVV number – on the back of the card itself.

EasyJet added that it had gone public now in order to warn the nine million customers whose email addresses had been stolen to be wary of phishing attacks.

It said that it would notify everyone affected by 26 May.

It did not provide details about the nature of the attack or the motives, but said its investigation suggested hackers were targeting “company intellectual property” rather than information that could be used in identity theft.

“There is no evidence that any personal information of any nature has been misused, however, on the recommendation of the ICO, we are communicating with the approximately nine million customers whose travel details were accessed to advise them of protective steps to minimise any risk of potential phishing.

“We are advising customers to be cautious of any communications purporting to come from EasyJet or EasyJet Holidays.”

In response to the breach, the ICO said that it was investigating.

“People have a right to expect that organisations will handle their personal information securely and responsibly. When that doesn’t happen, we will investigate and take robust action where necessary.”

It also warned people to be on the lookout for phishing attacks and directed them to its advice on its website on how to spot such scams.

    Phishing

Phishing attempts – which see criminals sending emails with links to fake web pages that steal personal data – have risen exponentially during the coronavirus crisis.

Google is blocking more than 100 million phishing emails every day to Gmail users.

It is likely that hackers will take advantage of the fact people are cancelling flights because of the uncertainty related to the spread of Covid-19, said Ray Walsh, a digital privacy expert at ProPrivacy.

“Anybody who has ever purchased an EasyJet flight is advised to be extremely wary when opening emails from now on,” he said.

“Phishing emails that leverage data stolen during the attack could be used as an attack vector at any point in the future.

“As a result, it is important for customers to be vigilant whenever they receive unsolicited emails or emails that appear to be from EasyJet, as these could be fake emails which link to cloned websites designed to steal your data.”

    Turbulent times

The coronavirus pandemic has meant an end to much global travel, leaving airlines struggling financially.

“These are already turbulent times for all companies within the aviation industry but the situation has just got significantly worse for EasyJet,” said Mike Fenton, chief executive of threat detection firm Redscan.

“To add to the company’s woes, it is now has to explain how the personal records of nine million customers were able to be accessed.

“When it comes to cyber security, the airline industry doesn’t have a great record. The British Airways breach in 2018 should have been a wake-up call and passenger confidence is likely to be at an all-time low after this.”

  • India records highest spike despite strict lockdown

India recorded more than 5,200 new infections on Tuesday – its biggest spike so far in a single day. Its tally of confirmed cases is now over 106,000, with 61,149 active infections.

The spike comes as the country begins to ease one of the world’s most severe lockdowns, in which almost everything except essential services such as healthcare and food supplies was shut.

While European countries have already peaked, experts have said that’s yet to happen in India. Dr Randeep Guleria, director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, has said that cases could peak in June-July, which is also the flu season.

But other epidemiologists believe the peak may vary from state to state, as the progress of the disease has also differed widely across regions.

Maharashtra state alone, for instance, accounts for nearly 40% of India’s confirmed cases – and along with Gujarat it makes up nearly 70% of the national death toll from the pandemic.

  • China sees new cases in northeast cluster

China on Wednesday reported four new confirmed cases in the northeastern province of Jilin and one imported case – bringing the total number of cases to 82,965.

Earlier this month, an infected laundry worker in Shulan city was found to have spread the virus to 11 others.

Shulan was declared a high-risk area and has entered a state of lockdown – all outbound transport has been stopped.

Several cases were later recorded in Jilin city and the province has now seen a total of 133 confirmed locally transmitted cases, according to state media.

There are now fears that the province could emerge as the centre of new infections in China – even as life starts to go back to normal for the rest of the country.

  • Elections or no elections; Ghana should be peaceful – Opanyin Agyekum

The Dean of the School of Performing Arts of the University of Ghana, Legon, Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly known as Opanyin Agyekum has called on the Electoral Commission and its stakeholders to pre-plan contingency measures for Ghana’s elections.

According to Opanyin Agyekum, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that there is the possibility of the country’s elections being interrupted, thus the framers of the constitution should take a cue from the current situation.

Opanyin Agyekum was commenting on the clash between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the compilation of a new voters’ register and whether or not the elections can be held in spite of the outbreak of the COVID-19.

Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, Opanyin Agyekum called for a consensus among the parties on the issue and advised that there should be peace in the nation whether or not this year’s elections will come off.

”Whether we hold the elections or not, there should be peace…When we finish voting, it should be possible for people to go about their work the following the day and if by chance, we are not able to hold the elections, people should still be able to go work the next day or days ahead. So, this should be our preparations for the six months ahead of us”, he said.

  • Ongoing police recruitment advertisement is fake – Police

The Police Administration has called on the public to treat with contempt the ongoing enlistment advertisement into the Service on social media, saying that it is fake.

The Ghana Police Service wishes to state that the Police Service is not advertising recruitment nor undertaking fresh recruitment processes”.

Superintendent of Police Mrs Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman, Director of Public Affairs, made these known in a release which was made available to the Ghana News Agency.

She said “Police recruitment exercises are first published in the major dailies, at least the “Daily Graphic” and “Ghanaian Times” newspapers prior to the start of the recruitment processes”.

“Presently, Police recruits who started training in February this year, at the various Police training schools at Accra, Koforidua, Ho, Kumasi and Pwalugu are in training undergoing the scheduled training exercises,” it said.

The release debunked the assertion that the Police is in breach of the law in the ongoing training of Police recruits in accordance with law, and that Regulation 4 of the extended

Imposition of Restrictions (Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic) Instrument, 2020 [E.I. 64] exempts “Security Services” including the Ghana Police Service from restrictions under the regulations.

“The Police Administration has, however, put in place sufficient measures to ensure social distancing maintained between and among recruits. These are in addition to enhanced hygiene procedures directed by the President of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” it said.

It said adequate measures have also been put in place to sufficiently manage any issue of COVID-19 that may arise at any of the Police training facilities.

“The Police Administration further assures parents, guardians and the public that the health and safety of Police Recruits and Police Officers amid COVID-19 remains paramount.”

The release asked members of the public to verify if the Police Service was recruiting or not, through Police Toll-free number 18555 or the National Unified Code 112.

“In addition, the public is encouraged to report any person(s) who make false claims of recruitment to the nearest Police Station for arrest and prosecution,” it stated.

  • Daily Guide: Coronavirus: Let us look inward

A few weeks ago, a Covid-19 patient in New Jersey, USA, claimed to have been cured after taking a medication produced by Dr. Sheikh Amin Bonsu. She added that her roommate who also manifested the symptoms took the medication and like her tested negative after an earlier positive result.

The feat expectedly received wide publicity, and given the continuing search for a therapeutic treatment for the novel virus, we think this could be a game changer.

He had said that another Ghanaian lady in London also got cured through a similar product from his pharmaceutical production.

The position of most Ghanaians who read the story and heard the interview with the owner of the famous Amen Herbal Scientific Centre with branches in some parts of the country was that we hardly recognize alternative medical practice even when evidence abounds about the efficacy of medicines from this line as in the case of the cured persons earlier alluded to in the commentary.

With the addresses and lab results of the recovered patients available, it is surprising that Dr. Amin Bonsu has not been invited for discussions about his products.

We wish that the medical authorities, especially the Pharmacology Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology whose testimony he has for one of his drugs, would subject the medication to further scrutiny, especially against the strong claim by the New Jersey-based Ghanaian lady.

Even as the world is in a frantic search for a cure for the disease, which is responsible for a global nightmare, every claim is worth evaluating.

Throughout history, mankind has unearthed solutions during crisis such as the one confronting the world today.

The confidence Dr. Amin Bonsu, a respectable personality in the comity of alternative medical practitioners in the country, is exuding speaks volumes about what could possibly come our way as a country.

As the search continues, we should not lose sight of such persons and their alternative medical practice across the country. Dismissing him as some of us have already done is not an acceptable option without evaluating his medication.

With his medical products bearing the certificate of approval of the regulatory authorities, we think it would be worthwhile if they engaged with him, with a view to ascertaining the authenticity of his therapeutics.

We do not by any means seek to turn the attention of Ghanaians away from mainstream medical facilities but only asking that the authorities engage with those who claim to have cure for Covid-19 because of the unusual times in which we are.

Merely writing off non-hospital players in the search for cure for the disease would not serve our cause.

Perhaps such engagements would bring for us and the world at large a cure which would elevate the stature of Ghana beyond its current notch.

  • Coronavirus: FDA to clamp down on illegal nose masks producers

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned that it will descend heavily on people and organisations producing nose masks for sale without duly registering with the Authority to do so.

It said as part of the requirements, persons or groups of persons who desired to produce face masks and sell to the public must register with the FDA before they could produce to do so.

Mr Albert Ankomah, the Upper West Regional Director for the FDA, said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Wa on Tuesday.

He said it was illegal to sell an unregistered product in Ghana; hence the FDA was educating the people on the need for them to register before producing and selling nose masks to avoid being in conflict with the law.

He, therefore, called on tailors and dressmakers to observe the FDA requirements in producing nose masks for public use in the fight against the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The GNA had observed that following calls by health experts and the President to regularly wear nose masks, especially at public places such as the markets, several people, including tailors and dressmakers in the Upper West Region, had ventured into the production and sale of nose mask to the public.

However, Mr Ankomah said currently, no individual or group of people in the Region had registered with the FDA to produce nose mask for sale.

He said the practice was a source of worry as some of the nose masks being sold in the Region did not meet the FDA standard, which had posed a serious health risk to the users and could thwart the efforts in the fight against the COVID-19.

The FDA Boss explained that producers who wanted to register were required to pay annual registration fees of GH?250.00 while those producing for organizational use (noncommercial) were also required to pay listing fees of GH¢150.00.

Other requirements were: twelve samples of the nose mask, application letter and completed application form for Class One Medical Devices, the nose mask must be a three-layer Calico-Stiff (hard/medium)-Calico or Calico-Calico-Calico.

“Face or nose mask should cover the nose, mouth and chin area with a three-layer thickness of not less than 0.759mm,” Mr Ankomah stated.

He explained that producers who want to produce with colourful fabric must produce in the format; Caloco-Caloco-Cloth, to prevent the user from inhaling the dye used in designing the cloth.

He also urged the public to buy registered and quality nose masks which is effective in fighting the deadly COVID-19.

Mr Ankomah said buyers should look out for the FDA registration number on the labeling of the nose mask as well as the three-layer standard before buying.

He said reducing the spread of the COVID-19 was paramount and that the FDA had intensified public sensitisation on the use of the nose masks.

  • 500 shops fined in Ho over coronavirus non-compliance

About 500 shops and business owners in the Ho Municipality have been fined by Ho Municipal Assembly for not implementing measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19.

An ongoing sensitization and compliance exercise by the Environmental Health Department, led to the closure of shops and businesses that ignored COVID-19 prevention regulations including social distancing, the installation of handwashing facilities, and the wearing of face masks.

The culprits were charged to pay fines ranging from GH¢150.00 to GH¢500.00 and also guided on how to implement the protocols.

Mrs Sybil Boison, Regional Environmental Health Officer, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that most shops and businesses plainly ignored the directives despite an increase in the community spreading of the virus, hence the deterrent measure.

She said the exercise would be implemented across the Region, adding that the Department would teach the construction of tippy-taps as a cost-free alternative to veronica buckets and other hand washing systems.

The team is also inspecting the health certificates of food vendors, and ensuring that commercial drivers wore face masks and did not carry more passengers than approved.

Mr Peter Pariki, Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Focal Person for the Region, remarked that the actions being taken were aiding compliance, and that the situation would be monitored for desired results.

He added that the sensitization efforts required more support, and appealed to the media and other stakeholders to help.

  • Traders and drivers at Sekondi lorry station unhappy with closure of urinal

The closure of a four-room chamber serving as a urinal for traders, passengers and drivers at the Sekondi Lorry station has made it difficult to ensure environmental sanity amid this COVID-19 pandemic.

The situation has resulted in indiscriminate urination among users of the lorry park, particularly with traders openly seen urinating in containers and spreading the content in gutters and sometimes on the ground.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday morning to the lorry park, a day which happened to be a market day in Sekondi, revealed the urgency and the need for the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) to act quickly to avert any viral spread, contamination and diseases.

Though the urinal was in good shape during the visit, it was unclear why officials from the Assembly would lock up such an important facility.

Some traders and drivers the GNA spoke to, expressed dissatisfaction at the Assembly’s decision to lock up the place without any engagement or consultation with users of the facility.

A trader retorted, “You don’t know how these Assembly people take us for granted, this place really helps us to have easy access to ease ourselves, but now we have to do merry go round or have a container to do it in. How about customers and other users?” she queried.

She further described the action as a bad move on the part of the Assembly.

A Taxi Driver also lamented about the current indiscriminate spread of urine around and how the foul smell had engulfed the whole area due to the closure of the urinal.

Users are, therefore, pleading with the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr. Anthony K. K. Sam to as a matter of priority intervene in the situation to save passengers, traders and drivers, among other users from the ordeal.

Efforts to get in touch with the MCE for his side of the story proved futile.

  • Police will continue to arrest those who refuse to wear nose masks – Minister

Mr Simon Osei Mensah, Ashanti Regional Minister, has warned that the police would continue to arrest recalcitrant persons who refuse to wear face masks as had been directed by the President.

He said the wearing of face or nose masks was now mandatory and the police together with other security agencies, would ensure that everybody complied with it as part of measures to contain the further spread of the coronavirus in the Region.

Speaking at the launch of an exercise to disinfect and fumigate all police stations, barracks and security installations in the Ashanti Region in Kumasi, Mr Osei Mensah, commended the regional police command for arresting and committing recalcitrant persons to do community work.

The police as part of measures to enforce the wearing of the nose masks in the Region, have been arresting those who breach the directive and commit them to undertake community works such as cleaning the drains, weeding, picking of litters in public places, as well as sweeping of streets in Kumasi.

This action by the police had had positive impact since most people now wear the nose masks and the Regional Minister is very happy about the outcome.

The fumigation exercise, is being conducted by the Zoomlion Company Limited in over 158 police stations and barracks in the Region.

It is part of several measures put in place by the government to improve upon environmental health in public places.

Already, all markets, lorry parks and Senior High Schools in the country, have been fumigated to rid them of micro-organisms, rodents and reptiles.

Mr Osei Mensah said the government was doing all these with huge financial commitments aimed at containing the further spread of the virus in the country.

He pledged the support of the Regional Coordinating Council to ensure the success of the exercise in the Region.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr David Agyeman Adjem, Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, said the exercise had become necessary in view of the confirmation of COVID-19 positive cases in some police cells and barracks.

He asked the officers to cooperate with the Zoomlion officials to ensure the success of the exercise.

  • Suspension of public gathering remains in force – Accra Police

The Accra regional police command has reminded the people that the ban on public gathering remains in force, as part of the broader measures to enforce the social distancing protocol to contain and stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency Monday, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Effiah Tenge, Head of Public Affairs Unit of Greater Regional Police Command, said social gathering tended to increase the risk of spreading the pandemic and therefore called on everybody to respect the ban.

She also urged the public to observe all coronavirus preventive protocols, including wearing of facemasks and regular hand washing with soap under running water to stem the spread on the pathogen.

Delivering his ninth address to the nation on measures taken to combat the spread of Coronavirus, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo extended the ban on public gathering, including religious activities, festivals and funerals till the end of May.

He said the closure of schools and the ban on public gathering had created a lot of inconvenience for many Ghanaians but “we have no option but to stay the course.”

DSP Tenge stressed, “All forms of public gathering – assembly or meeting at a public place for a common purpose, such as conferences; workshops, funerals, festivals, political rallies, sporting events and sporting clubs have been suspended.

“This is because public gathering significantly increases the risk of spreading the coronavirus disease so for the sake of everyone, people must be encouraged not to hold meetings or assemble.”

She added that the suspension covered private parties, night clubs, drinking spots, event centres and religious activities in churches, mosques, shrines and crusades as well as conventions, pilgrimages and other religious gatherings. The Police Spokesperson warned that the Police would arrest and prosecute persons who engaged in those activities and said, “the only exemption for public gathering under the law is a private burial, in which case the number of people involved should not exceed 25.”

“Let us be reminded that the social distancing protocol still applies for this exemption,” she added.

“The law stipulates one-metre spacing and that should be strictly observed at the private burial and all public places such as markets, supermarkets, banking halls, restaurants, chop bars etc. and any other place people meet.

“Same is advised in all Vehicles either private cars, trotro, buses, taxis, motorbikes. The one-metre minimum spacing must be observed.”

DSP Tenge encouraged the people to continue observing the COVID-19 preventive protocols including the wearing of masks, rigorous hand washing, use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer, avoid handshakes and covering mouth when sneezing among others.

  • Tema fish processing company to reopen after Covid-19 mass testing

Head of the Disease Surveillance Department at the Ghana Health Service, Dr Franklin Asiedu- Bekoe says the Tema Fish Processing Company can open for operations after the first test of 624 workers came out negative.

This follows the closure of the company after 533 out of 1,300 workers of the well-known company tested positive for Covid-19.

President Akufo-Addo who gave details during a national address said, all the 533 people were affected by one person.

Speaking at a weekly press brief held at the Information Ministry, Dr Franklin Asiedu- Bekoe said GHS has put in place protocols for the workers so work can resume.

“We went to look at the gaps that exist in such a facility. The first thing we noticed was that the employees were more than the space.

“The other thing was that social distancing was also being disregarded, then they had an issue with their canteen.

“The dinning table has about 6 people sitting close to each other and also there is a bus that drives them around and social distancing was not being practice on it. They also had a log in system that uses finger print. Those are all factors that can spread the virus.

“So going further, the spread has to be prevented and for the 695 possible cases the result that has come is that 624 are negative and only 7 are positive.

“Currently handwashing facilities have been placed at each department. There are also floor managers to show people where to stand. Also all staff are to wear face masks and hand sanitisers have been placed at all vantage points now.

Ghana has recorded 5,918 confirmed cases of the virus with 31 deaths. While Greater Accra has the highest record of 4,422 cases, the Ashanti region is next with 881 cases.
