  • Sports Check: AFCON should be postponed to June 2021 Oliver Arthur

Renowned football agent, Oliver Arthur believes the global disruption brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic will make it difficult for the Confederation of African Football(CAF) to organize the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations slated for January 2021 in Cameroon.

The novel virus forced the continent’s football governing body to halt the second round of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers which was slated for March 2020 due to the rapid spread of the virus across Africa.

However, there has been an open conversation on whether CAF should go-ahead to organize the competition or emulate what UEFA has done by postponing the 2020 EURO Championship to June 2021.

Adding his voice to the debate, Oliver Arthur in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Editor Daniel Oduro on Sports Check stated that the only option for CAF for organizing the AFCON in 2021 is to push it from January to June.

“Frankly speaking, I think the AFCON should be postponed to June 2021 because we have to play qualifiers before the main tournament. So if you are not able to play the qualifiers how do you then get to the tournament proper.”

“Currently, the leagues in Europe don’t know what they are doing and if they are to cancel the season, it means they will restart the new season in August. You can’t also play the qualifiers in August because there will be too much pressure on the payers.”

“Also, I don’t see how this is going to be possible when we don ‘t have a vaccine yet for the Coronavirus and I don ‘t see how we are going to follow all the social distancing protocols and wearing of face masks in an AFCON tournament hence the need to postpone the tournament from January to June,” he told GhanaWeb on Sports Check.

The diaspora branches of the governing NPP have jointly commended President Akufo-Addo on his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

The members say based on their experiences in the diaspora in relation to the pandemic, they feel “compelled to extol the commitment and the pragmatic strategies based on expert advice to contain the pandemic and to commend the President and his government for that.”

“The Covid-19 has inundated the global community, taking lives, crumbling economies and social cohesion of all countries requiring bold leadership such as what Nana Akufo-Addo is demonstrating in Ghana,” a statement from the International Affairs, NPP said.

The group says the timely closure of the borders of Ghana, mandatory quarantining of all travelers from abroad on the night of the closure of borders and the three-week lockdown in parts of the country helped to contain the outbreak.

The group also commended the president on the stimulus packages meant to reduce the economic burden of Ghanaians due to the pandemic.

They lauded among others, the 50 percent bonus for frontline health workers and three-month free water and electricity subsidies as a step in the right direction.

“As much as possible, all Ghanaians should continue to observe all safety protocols put out by the President, local and international bodies to effectively contain the pandemic,” they said.

  • Eastern Regional FA, RAG to engage premier and division one referees

The Eastern Regional Football Association(ERFA) and the Eastern Regional branch of the Referees Association of Ghana(RAG), have agreed to use the services of experienced referees from the premier and division one leagues to assist in match officiating in the upcoming football season.

The motive behind the agreement is to enhance officiating in the league, promote fair play and upgrade the standard of football in the region.

This the ERFA believes that with fair officiating coupled with other measures, the division two league will be attractive for sponsorship from corporate bodies.

This decision came to light, after the Executive Council of the Regional Football Association(RFA) engaged leaders of the Eastern Regional branch of the RAG to deliberate on measures to promote fair officiating in football in the region.

Out of the deliberations, the two bodies further agreed on a 25 percent increase of the GhC 160.00 officiating fees paid to referees previously.

At the meeting, the leadership of the referees argued that, since 2016, they have maintained the same officiating fee of GhC 160.00 and therefore needed an increment of 100 percent of which the Executive Council rejected and rather proposed a 12 percent increment due to the financial strength of clubs in the region.

However, upon further discussions, both parties concluded on a 25 percent increment of the officiating fee.

The RFA also discussed how to ensure that promotion and demotion would be done so that the number of clubs participating in the division two league would be cut down from 74 clubs to 32 as directed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

  • Hearts, Kotoko to pay $10,500 per week for usage of stadia if football returns behind closed-doors

Each Ghanaian club must cough up a staggering $10,500 per week for the usage of a state facility when football returns behind closed-doors following the Coronavirus shutdown, the National Sports Authority has revealed.

The body responsible for the management of the state facilities say it will charge GHC 60,000 per usage if the behind closed-door policy is given a seal of approval.

The Ghana Football Association is considering several factors in a bid for the resumption of football in the West African nation.

Several proponents including a complete empty stadia is being mooted as the FA ponders on the future of the 2019/2020 season.

But it appears the quest to play behind-closed doors will come at an astronomical cost to local clubs.

National Sports Authority (NSA) boss Professor Peter Twumasi has revealed that his outfit will charge GHC60,000 per game if it becomes obvious NSA will not benefit from gate proceeds.

“This is to enable us to observe all the COVID-19 protocols by providing sanitizers, water, soap, tissues, electricity, and maintaining the social distancing protocols,” he told Kumasi FM.

“With this realistic charge, the NSA will have enough funds to also maintain the stadia. We provide services without getting the required fund.

“The NSA has been constantly criticized for failing to maintain the stadia, with this charge we will be able to fix everything.”

  • Coronavirus: Travis McCready plays America’s first gig in months

Country musician Travis McCready played to an audience wearing face masks in what’s been described as the first US concert since the Covid-19 lockdown.

The gig, in Arkansas, offered a glimpse of how live music could resume in the UK, with compulsory temperature tests and social distancing for all present.

Concert-goers were required to buy seats in clusters, branded “fan pods”, and large areas were roped off.

“It’s just nice to be doing something that’s normal,” said one attendee.

McCready’s concert was originally scheduled for Friday, 15 May, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, but Governor Asa Hutchinson said it failed to meet the state’s public health standards.

The venue – a former Masonic temple called TempleLive – was threatened with a cease-and-desist order and had its alcohol licence revoked.

But after making adjustments to their concert plan, the venue received permission to stage the concert on Monday night.

Under the state-approved plan, all employees and audience members over the age of 10 were required to wear face coverings, and performers were instructed to maintain a minimum distance of 12 feet from the audience.

The state also allowed TempleLive to have 239 people seated in the 1,100-seat venue.

    ‘Fight for your right’

After receiving the go-ahead, representatives from the venue maintained they had delayed the concert against their will.

“This is about rock and roll, and having a good time, and live music, and being out with your peers, and doing what you do as an American: You get out, you do things,” Mike Brown told reporters at Arkansas TV station KFSM-TV.

Speaking to the New York Times, Mr Brown also argued that concert venues were being held to stricter standards than other public gatherings.

“If you can go to a church and it’s a public assembly, there is no difference,” said Mike Brown, a representative for Temple Live. “How is it OK for one group to have a public meeting, and it’s not OK for a music venue to have the same opportunity?”

State officials argued that a concert was more dangerous than a religious gathering because it was more likely to attract visitors from out-of-town.

When the show finally went ahead on Monday night, Mr Brown greeted the audience by playing the Beastie Boys’ Fight For Your Right (To Party) before introducing support act Lauren Brown.

McCready took to the stage later, without referencing the strange circumstances. Nonetheless, fans seemed to appreciate the show.

“We’re happy to be here,” said LaLisa Smiddy, who drove four hours to attend the concert.

“I’m one of the more paranoid ones out there, and when I saw everything this venue has done, I was ready to come,” she told the New York Times. “I think they’ve done an outstanding job.”

  • We need to invest in Disaster Risk Management – Prosper Bani

Mr. Prosper Bani, a former Head of the United Nations Development Programme Crisis Prevention and Recovery Team for Africa, has urged African leaders to invest in Disaster Risk Prevention and Management to ready the continent to respond to unpredicted crises.

Africa’s development, he said, was being challenged by the lack of a strategy to link disaster risk reduction to development initiatives.

“The plans must articulate clearly what the problems are and how they would be addressed. It should reflect a verifiable budget and expenditure plan; and awareness-raising to bring along the citizens to become conscious and aware of their responsibilities in the fight to reduce the spread”.

Mr Bani, who served as a Chief of Staff under the John Mahama administration, said this in a statement he issued, and copied, to the Ghana News Agency, in Accra.

He pointed out that the Africa Regional Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction in July 2004 emphasised the importance of policymakers to look at strengthening institutional frameworks, risk identification, knowledge management, governance and emergency response and demanded political commitment to addressing comprehensive policies on disaster risk reduction as part of development plans.

Mr Bani said the lack of commitments to these posed a major challenge to most African countries.

He stated that the absence of preventive infrastructure had caused significant challenges to the development efforts of most African countries.

This, he explained, had manifested in prolonged droughts, devastating floods, uncontrolled bushfires, landslides, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions, health epidemics, pandemics such as Ebola and the new coronavirus, affecting sustainable development.

“There is evidence that the world, and Africa in particular, has been inundated with Protocols, Action Plans, Guidelines, and numerous international agreements on disaster risk reduction, and in particular how to reduce the risk and impact of disasters,” he however noted.

“The latest has been the development of an Action Plan for Africa following the Sendai Framework of 2015, which was finalised in 2016.

“African leaders must invest in the implementation of the Action Plan, which could mitigate the impact on the economies of member states during this Coronavirus pandemic”.

  • Coronavirus: Free water relief program lacks monitoring – Jantuah

Nana Yaa Jantuah, Vice-Chair of the Consumer Protection Agency, has noted that there is lack of supervision in ensuring that all Ghanaians benefit from the free water supply to homes as one of the reliefs by the government to deal with the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She told Alfred Ocansey on the Sunrise show on 3FM Tuesday May 19 that people are complaining that they are not benefiting from the programme weeks after the implementation

She attributed this to a lack of supervision by authority.

President Akufo-Addo in his televised address to the nation announced that for the months of April, May and June, his government is taking the water cost burden off Ghanaians.

“All water tankers, publicly and privately-owned, are also going to be mobilized to ensure the supply of water to all vulnerable communities,” he said.

But Ms Jantuah said: “People are saying they are not piped, they are not metered and so they are not enjoying the reliefs so we thought that there should be some form of interventions to ensure that they get free water.

“We need water to do many things especially in this time of COVID-19.

“What I see lacking in all this is that stakeholders are not monitoring because you need to monitor to find out what exactly is going on because an instruction has been given, adherence to that instruction, so there should be monitoring.”

  • China abductions: Parents find son snatched in hotel 32 years ago

A Chinese couple whose son was abducted in a hotel in 1988 have been reunited with him after 32 years.

Mao Yin was snatched aged two, while his father stopped to get him some water on the way home from nursery.

His parents searched the country for him and his mother distributed more than 100,000 flyers.

The family were reunited at a police news conference on Monday, and the son – now aged 34 – said he planned to spend time with his parents.

“I would like to thank the tens of thousands of people who helped us,” said Li Jingzhi, the boy’s mother.

    What happened to Mao Yin?

He was born on 23 February, 1986. In an interview with the South China Morning Post in January – before he was found – his mother called him a “very clever, cute, and healthy” baby.

On 17 October 1988, his father, Mao Zhenjing, was bringing him home from nursery in the city of Xian in Shaanxi province.

The boy asked for a drink of water, so they stopped in the entrance of a hotel. As the father cooled down some hot water, he looked away briefly, and the boy was taken.

The family searched in and around Xian, putting up posters. At one point, they thought they had found him, but it was a false dawn.

Mrs Li quit her job to search for her son – handing out some 100,000 flyers in more than 10 provinces and municipalities – without success.

Over the years she appeared on numerous Chinese television shows to appeal for help, including The X Factor. She followed 300 leads, the SCMP said, but no match was found,

In 2007, Mrs Li started volunteering with a group called “Baby Come Back Home”, to help other parents look for their missing children.

According to state media, she helped reunite 29 children with their families, while her own son was still missing. She intends to keep working with the group.

How was Mao Yin found? In April, state media said, police received a tip about a man from Sichuan Province in south-west China – about 1,000km (620 miles) from Xian – who had adopted a baby years earlier.

Police found the adoptee, now a 34-year-old man, and a DNA test was carried out to see if he was related to Mao Zhenjing and Li Jingzhi. It came back positive.

Mao Yin – who had been renamed Gu Ningning – now runs a home decoration business. He said he was “not sure” about the future, but would spend time with his parents.

Police said he had been sold as a boy to a childless couple for 6,000 yuan (£690, $840 in today’s money).

Mrs Li was told the good news on 10 May – Mother’s Day in China. “This is the best gift I have ever got,” she said.

The investigation into the 1988 disappearance is still ongoing. The authorities have not released information about the couple who raised Mao Yin.

How common is child trafficking in China? The abduction and trafficking of babies has been a problem in China for decades.

There are no official figures, but on Baby Come Back Home’s website there are 14,893 posts looking for missing boys, and 7,411 looking for girls.

  • Coronavirus: Brazil records third-highest Covid-19 infection level

Brazil has become the country with the third-highest number of confirmed coronavirus infections in the world, after registering a total of more than 250,000 cases.

Only the US and Russia have recorded more infections.

Experts say insufficient testing might mean that the real figure in Brazil could be 15 times higher.

The country’s far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, has dismissed the risks and compared Covid-19 to “a little flu”.

His handling of the outbreak – which has included calls for lockdowns imposed by state governors to be lifted – has led to criticism and the resignation of Health Minister Nelson Teich last week.

Mr Teich’s predecessor, Luiz Mandetta, was sacked by President Bolsonaro after the two men disagreed over social distancing measures.

But Mr Bolsonaro’s focus on minimising economic disruption has been welcomed by many. Supporters who have organised anti-lockdown rallies, some of which the president attended.

How bad is the situation in Brazil?

Brazil now has more than a quarter of a million confirmed cases. More than 16,000 Covid-19 patients have died, the sixth-highest death toll in the world.

The health system of its largest city, São Paulo, could collapse within two weeks, Mayor Bruno Covas has warned.

The city has a population of about 12 million, and official say show most residents are ignoring social distancing rules. More than 3,000 people have died with the virus in São Paulo.

But it is not only urban centres that have been badly hit. Amazonas state had almost 21,000 confirmed cases as of Monday.

Health services in Manaus, the state capital, have been overwhelmed and mass graves are being used to bury the dead.

How is President Bolsonaro handling the crisis?

Mr Bolsonaro continues to oppose lockdown measures, arguing that they will wreck the economy.

In March he made a speech calling on mayors and governors to roll back restrictions: “Our lives have to go on. Jobs must be kept. We must get back to normal.”

The president described the closures of businesses and schools, together with restrictions on public transport, as “scorched-earth” policies.

Despite the rapidly rising infection rate, Mr Bolsonaro argued that most people, including himself, had nothing to fear from the virus.

“With my history as an athlete, if I were infected with the virus I would have no reason to worry. I would feel nothing, or it would be at most just a little flu,” he said.

  • Australia threatens WTO action as dispute with China deepens

Australia threatened Tuesday to take China to the World Trade Organisation to counter a fresh round of punitive sanctions, as the two countries clashed over an investigation into the origins and spread of the coronavirus.

Canberra said it may seek remedial action to overturn almost 81 percent in tariffs on barley exports – the latest in a series of Chinese sanctions that many believe are politically motivated.

Beijing on Monday announced the measures – earmarked to last five years – after finding Australian subsidies and dumping had “substantially damaged domestic industry”.

Both sides have insisted that barley is a technical trade issue, and Australian officials have played down fears of a trade war, saying there would be no “tit-for-tat” response.

“To say that I’m disappointed is an understatement,” agriculture minister David Littleproud said.

“This is something that we will strongly reject, the premise that the Australian barley farmer is subsidised in any way, shape or form.”

“We will now work through the determination by Chinese officials, calmly and methodically, and reserve our right to go to the World Trade Organisation to get the independent umpire to make that determination.”

The move has worsened a relationship that has become increasingly troubled as Beijing has become more assertive in flexing its growing military, economic and diplomatic power in the Asia-Pacific region.

Beijing reacted with fury to Australia’s recent calls for an independent investigation into the origins and spread of the coronavirus from an initial outbreak in China’s central Wuhan province.

In response, the Chinese ambassador in Canberra threatened a widespread consumer boycott of Australian products – a warning followed up by a bar on imports from four major Australian beef producers.

A full independent COVID-19 investigation would heap scrutiny on China’s handling of the crisis, something that unelected Communist Party leaders deem intolerable.

Weihuan Zhou, an international economic law expert at the University of New South Wales, said China’s decision to impose tariffs was a “natural consequence” of a Chinese anti-dumping investigation into Australian barley launched in November 2018.

But, he told AFP, the timing was telling.

“The fact that it’s come out now and the fact they have increased the dumping duty by about 20 percent beyond what was initially requested by China’s industry – this would be related to Australia’s position.”

    ‘A new low ‘

Tensions between Beijing and Canberra have escalated several times in recent years, including over a ban on Huawei building Australia’s 5G network and Australia closing its border to Chinese citizens early in the coronavirus pandemic.

Darren Lim, a senior lecturer in politics and international relations at the Australian National University, said the trade dispute brought relations between the two countries to “a new low”.

“While these actions also hurt the Chinese economy, China’s size and its political system make the Chinese government better able to deal with the fallout of these economic losses, at least in the short term,” he told AFP.

“Having made its initial point, I’ll bet Canberra understands it’s unwise to escalate a fight Australia ultimately does not have the firepower to win.”

Australia’s trade and agriculture ministers admit they are now being frozen out by Chinese counterparts, who are refusing to take their calls.

However, trade minister Simon Birmingham said Australia would not retaliate against China, the country’s biggest trading partner.

“We don’t pursue our trade policies on a tit-for-tat basis. We will continue to operate as we always do,” he said.

A joint statement from five Australian grain growers’ organisations said the dispute was likely to halt exports to China, costing the industry at least Aus$500 million (US$327 million) a year.

Australia said its barley farmers will now seek to pursue other export markets, including in the Middle East, but filling the hole left by Beijing will not be easy.

China imported 2.5 million tonnes of Australian barley last financial year, more than 50 percent of Australia’s barley exports, with the next-biggest importer – Japan, buying less than 800,000 tonnes.

  • How Ghanaian film director blew over GHC1.5 million on ‘Aloe Vera’

Multiple award-winning film director Peter Sedufia has disclosed that he blew over $200,000 (1.5 million Ghana cedi equivalent) on his recent drama film, titled “Aloe Vera”.

According to him, he budgeted $150,000 (GHC 860,000 equivalent) for the popular film but unfortunate events cost him more.

He said the initial budget was exhausted when heavy rain damaged parts of the film set, forcing him to extend the shooting days to 7 to 8 days.

Peter revealed this in an Instagram post on Tuesday, May 19.

He captioned an interview he granted Forbes8: “Lol. Indeed, I thought #AloeVera film would cost us only USD 150,000 until the rains set in, damaged part of our set and extended the shoot for 7 to 8 extra days and shot our budget beyond USD 200,000.”

The film which stars Nana Ama Mcbrown, Gloria Sarfo, Aaron Adatsi, Alexandra Ayirebi-Acquah, Fred Amugi, Kofi Adjorlolo and Roselyn Ngissah was sold out when premiered in March this year.

  • India and Bangladesh evacuate millions ahead of super cyclone

India and Bangladesh are evacuating millions of people from coastal areas ahead of a super cyclone which is approaching from the Bay of Bengal.

Cyclone Amphan is expected to make landfall in an area near the border of the two countries later on Wednesday.

More than 20 relief teams have already been deployed, and several more are on standby, Indian officials say.

The coronavirus outbreak is making it harder for officials in both countries to evacuate people in these regions.

Amphan is expected to hit the coast with winds gusting up to 185km/h (115mph), forecasters say.

Officials in Bangladesh fear it will be the most powerful storm since Cyclone Sidr killed about 3,500 people in 2007. Most died as a result of sea water surging in.

While the storm’s current wind speed is likely to reduce slightly before it makes landfall, India’s weather department is predicting the surge of water caused could be as high as 10-16 feet (more than 3-5 metres).

The cyclone comes as ten of thousands of migrant workers flee cities for their villages during India’s lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus.

West Bengal and Orissa (Odisha) are among the Indian states that are seeing a larger number of them return.

Orissa has now cancelled trains which were due to arrive with thousands of migrants between 18 and 20 May.

And some district officials have barred entry into their areas and requested the state government to accommodate the migrants – many of whom are walking home – elsewhere until the storm passes.

The evacuation is expected to continue into Wednesday morning. Bangladesh’s disaster management minister has told the BBC that they plan to evacuate about two million people to safety.

Extra shelters have been prepared to allow for social distancing. Masks are also being distributed.

State officials in India are also struggling to find shelters for evacuees. In Orissa, for instance, 250 of the more than 800 existing shelters are being used as coronavirus quarantine centres.

So both states have asked for schools and other buildings in the areas likely to be hit by the super cyclone to be turned into temporary shelters – they need more than the usual numbers in order to house people while enforcing social distancing norms.

Around 50,000 people have been evacuated from areas near the Sunderban islands in India.

This would be the first super cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal since the 1999 super cyclone that hit the Orissa coast and killed more than 9,000 people.

India’s meteorological department has issued a “yellow alert” for the region, advising fishermen not to “venture into the south Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours, and north Bay of Bengal from 18-20 May”.

The weather department said the storm is likely to move across the north-west Bay of Bengal and cross West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts from noon local time on 20 May as a “very severe cyclonic storm”.

It also warned of rough seas, with storm surges that could inundate coastal areas. India’s weather department is predicting that the surge of water due to the storm could be as high as 10-16 feet.

  • Coronavirus: Trump says he is taking unproven drug hydroxychloroquine

US President Donald Trump has said he is taking hydroxychloroquine to ward off Coronavirus, despite public health officials warning it may be unsafe.

Speaking at the White House, he told reporters he started taking the malaria and lupus medication recently.

“I’m taking it for about a week and a half now and I’m still here, I’m still here,” was his surprise announcement.

There is no evidence hydroxychloroquine can fight coronavirus, and regulators warn the drug may cause heart problems.

    What did Trump say?

The 73-year-old president was hosting a meeting devoted to the struggling restaurant industry on Monday, when he caught reporters unawares by revealing he was taking the drug.

“You’d be surprised at how many people are taking it, especially the frontline workers before you catch it, the frontline workers, many, many are taking it,” he told reporters. “I happen to be taking it.”

Asked what was his evidence of hydroxychloroquine’s positive benefits, Mr Trump said: “Here’s my evidence: I get a lot of positive calls about it.”

He added: “I’ve heard a lot of good stories [about hydroxychloroquine] and if it’s not good, I’ll tell you right I’m not going to get hurt by it.”

Though some people in the White House have tested positive for coronavirus, the president said again on Monday he had “zero symptoms” and was being tested frequently.

He added that he has been taking a daily zinc supplement and received a single dose of azithromycin, an antibiotic meant to prevent infection.

When asked whether the White House physician had recommended he start taking the disputed remedy, Mr Trump said he himself had requested it.

Dr Sean Conley, physician to the president, said in a statement issued through the White House later on Monday that Mr Trump was in “very good health” and “symptom-free”.

The US Navy officer added: “After numerous discussions he and I had regarding the evidence for and against the use of hydroxychloroquine, we concluded the potential benefit from treatment outweighed the relative risks.”

What have US health officials said?

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month issued an advisory saying that hydroxychloroquine has “not been shown to be safe and effective”.

It cited reports that the drug can cause serious heart rhythm problems in Covid-19 patients.

The FDA warned against use of the medication outside hospitals, where the agency has granted temporary authorisation for its use in some cases. Clinical trials of the drug are also under way.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says there are no approved drugs or therapeutics to prevent or treat Covid-19, which is confirmed to have infected more than 1.5 million people in the US, killing over 90,000 patients.

  • Feud erupts over Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber’s US chart position

Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber have defended themselves after rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine accused them of buying the number one spot on the US chart.

The rapper claimed the pop stars had bought tens of thousands of copies of their charity single Stuck With U to boost its position.

He also said some streams of his song Gooba were improperly discounted, leaving it in third place on the chart.

Grande, Bieber and chart compilers Billboard have all denied the claims.

Bieber called the rapper’s accusations “a lie”, while Grande advised him to “take a moment to humble yourself”.

Billboard posted a lengthy article refuting each of his points while explaining how the chart positions were calculated.

“Overall, Stuck With U drew 28.1 million US streams, 26.3 million in radio airplay audience and 108,000 sold in the tracking week,” it explained.

“Gooba had 55.3 million US streams, 172,000 in radio airplay audience and 24,000 sold.

“Those sums resulted in the songs’ respective rankings on this week’s Hot 100.”

  • Premier League clubs could face surprise inspections

England’s Premier League football clubs have been given the green light to begin non-contact training in small groups from today but could face surprise inspections to ensure they adhere to new safety guidance.

GPS tracking and video analysis are also being considered, with the Premier League eventually aiming to have an inspector at every training ground.

“That will enable us to give confidence the protocols are being complied with,” said Richard Garlick, the league’s director of football.

“We are looking at bringing in our own independent audit inspection team that we’ll scale up over the next few days which will give us the ability to have inspections at training grounds to start with on a no-notice basis.”

  • Ghanaian clubs to spend minimum $3,000 each per week for coronavirus test

Ghanaian clubs will have to cough a minimum of $3,000 each a week to test for Coronavirus before every league match.

It will cost each player at least $100 per test as the future of the current Ghana football seasons continues to dominate inches in the local media.

Ghanaian football players, coaches and other supporting staff will be required to take a test for the Coronavirus pandemic before training sessions or matches if the Ghana FA is given a seal of approval to re-start football.

The team’s medical team will then assess whether players and coaches are healthy enough to take part.

That clearly will put a further financial strain on local clubs who are already grappling with massive cost due to the suspension of football due to the Coronavirus.

Testing of players and coaches will be a requisite tool before football can restart in the West African nation.

Already, the Ghana Football Association has warned clubs against training following the lifting of the lockdown by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuf- Addo while the league remained suspended.

Ghana football has been suspended since March because of the global pandemic.

There is no set date for when the campaign can resume in Ghana, with several outstanding fixtures still to play.

The Ghana FA has says it will communicate a final decision on the 2019/2020 football season on June 30.

While there have been no reported case of a footballer contracting the novel virus, the heath authorities are determined to adhere to the strict protocols to prevent a further outbreak.

  • Sports Ministry has no policy on stadia maintenance and misapplied GH¢180K

An audit report on the activities of the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ministry Youth and Sports (MoYs), by the Auditor General sighted by Joy Sports has revealed that the NSA misapplied monies meant for the fixing of seats at the Baba Yara stadium.

The report which was made available on December 30, 2019 say, NSA misapplied GH¢180,494 of GH¢203,688 meant to fix broken seats at the Baba Yara stadium when the Ghana Education Service(GES) used the facility for their inter-college sports competition.

The Sports umbrella body charged the GES, Kumasi an amount of GH¢203,688 to replace broken seats at the stadium during the inter-college sports competition.

The amount was paid according to the report, but seats had not been fixed during the audit. NSA had used GH¢180,494 from the amount paid for the 2017 sports festival.

The money should be refunded, the report recommended.

Auditors also noted that, MoYS did not have a policy on operations and maintenance of the stadia, and NSA did not also have a plan to operate and maintain the various stadia.

Also of interest from the audit is the fact that Management of MoYS and NSA did not have monitoring and evaluation strategies to evaluate performance of the various stadia to ensure their physical and financial sustainability.

Management have also not put measures in place to ensure the five stadia commercial facilities are put to maximum use to generate revenue to ensure the physical and financial sustainability of the stadia.

  • COVID-19: Taxi drivers, food vendors, others to undergo mass voluntary testing in Obuasi

The government is rolling out a voluntary mass testing programme in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region as part of efforts to curtail the spread of COVID-19 in that area.

Obuasi currently has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the Ashanti Region.

According to the head of Disease Surveillance Department of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, a visit to the area revealed some work that still needs to be done to ensure that the risk of spread in the area is kept low.

Speaking at a Ministry of Information press briefing, Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe said taxi drivers, food vendors, and other high-risk persons will be tested in the mass exercise.

“We are going to carry out enhanced contact-tracing in the very high-risk areas. Obuasi has very densely populated areas like Central Market, Anyinam, Asankore, Wawaso among others…We are also going to do mass voluntary testing among certain risk groups including taxi drivers and food vendors. That is a way of trying to address surveillance and contact management in Obuasi,” he said.

He revealed that 72 percent of all cases recorded in the area occurred within four days [April 21 April 25] with one trader identified to have infected 17 people.

Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe noted among other observations that the fact-finding team found out that compliance to the wearing of face mask in the area is low and there is no COVID-19 treatment facility in the area despite being a very densely populated area.

“Obuasi is one area where population density is high. Although AngloGold Ashanti has a prominent hospital, they did not have a treatment facility. You also see that, you do not see people wearing face masks…They also did not have a holding facility,” he observed.

He further announced that the Health Ministry has secured a 100-bed facility as an isolation centre to help in case management.

  • COVID-19 infections at fish-processing factory increased to 695 GHS

One hundred and sixty-two more staff of the Tema-based fish processing factoring, Pioneer Food Cannery, tested positive for COVID-19.

This has brought the total number of infections at the facility to 695.

624 persons out of the 695 cases of COVID-19 are on their way to recovery after testing negative in their first test.

Speaking at a press briefing by the Information Ministry, the Director of Disease Surveillance at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Franklin Asiedu Bekoe, pointed out that enhanced contact tracing has begun to identify other hidden cases.

“The Tema situation is about an employee at a fish processing factory who showed respiratory symptoms. Samples were taken and she was asked to go home. When the results came, they actually identified her contacts. At the time, they had 219 contacts. Initial tests were done to get a broader view of what is happening in the factory. Everyone in the factory, a population of over 1300 was subsequently tested. It was initially 533 but finally, it was 695 that tested positive [after all employees were tested].  The rest were negative.”

The government initially announced that over 500 workers at the factory had been infected after one worker contracted the disease.

Many Ghanaians received the information with anxiety, especially within the Tema area, given that it was the largest number of confirmed cases within a single organization.

Some even called for the company to be sanctioned over its alleged negligence and failure to put in place adequate precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

But the company in its statement said it already had adequate cleanliness and hygiene measures in place but beefed up those measures after the confirmation of COVID-19 cases in Ghana.

“[The] additional measures as temperature checks at entrances and exits to PFC, provision of alcohol rubs to facilitate hand sanitizing regularly, social distancing, wearing of masks and requiring self-declaration of any symptoms as well as regular monitoring of staff health,” it said.

  • Pray for Joyce Blessing, she’s not a happy person – Ola Michael

Ghanaian movie producer, Ola Michael has urged all Ghanaians to remember gospel singer, Joyce Blessing in their prayers, with emphasis on how emotionally burdened she currently is.

In a post sighted on his Facebook page, Ola Michael expressed his love for the “I Swerve” hitmaker and stressed on the pain she is going through at the moment.

Although evasive, the post conveniently comes at a time when reports have it that, Joyce Blessing’s seeming blissful marriage is at the verge of collapse with a rather messy child custody battle.

In an interview with Abeiku Santana on OKAY FM earlier this month, Joyce Blessing hinted there was trouble in her quarters saying,

“I will not disclose anything, my lawyers are working on it”.

Reports suggest Joyce Blessing’s husband and manager Dave Joy, is the one seeking for a divorce. Reasons for that are yet to be known.

Read more from Ola Michael’s post below:

When u are able to spend time in prayers, pls pray for this hugely talented musician. I love her so much. I love her talent. I know deep within my heart that she has suffered so much in marriage.

She’s not a happy person, weeping every night. She’s scared of how the public will see her and what the public is saying about her. She would want to tell the world her side of the story but not too sure if she would be believed.

She was coached to look arrogant and apprehensive by the very people who are destroying her today. They know her weakness and are taking advantage of it.

Dear friends, pls pray for Joyce Blessing. She’s a good woman. She’s a broken mother and need us as support and not as correction rods.

Dear God, please strenghten our sister. She’s not happy. She’s confused. She’s scatter brained. She needs u now more than ever. Please save her. Amen

  • Police Admin justifies decision to resume training of recruits despite coronavirus scare

The Police Administration has justified its decision to resume the training of recruits in the country, despite the widespread concerns against the re-opening.

According to the Service, the action does not violate the Executive Instrument on the imposition of restrictions.

Critics have raised fear of possible outbreak following the resumption of training at these centres amidst the spike in the covid-19 disease.

But according to a statement, signed by Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Supt. Shiella Abayie Buckman, the Service has put in place adequate measures to ensure that recruits are safe.

“The ongoing training of Police recruits is in accordance with law. Regulation 4 of the Extended Imposition of Restriction, 2020(E.I 64) exempts security services including the Ghana Police Service from restrictions under the regulation”

The statement also insisted that the Police Administration has put in place adequate measures to protect its men, while it observes health protocols and social distancing measures owing to the exponential figures in Covid-19 cases.

  • Sports Flashback: Michael Essien becomes fifth Ghanaian to win UEFA Champions League

On 19th May, 2012, tough-tackling Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien and his Chelsea side won the UEFA Champions League as they Blues stunned their more-fancied opponent Bayern Munich in the final at the Allianz Arena.

Although Michael Essien was an unused substitute in the final his impact in the London club was huge, having a key member of the team since his arrival in 2005.

Bayern Munich dominated play after they created countless of opportunities, but Chelsea held them to a 1-1 draw in regulation time to take the game to a penalty shootout and they emerged the better side as they beat the hosts 3-4.

Thomas Mueller’s late header put Bayern on the brink of victory on home territory but Didier Drogba levelled things up with a bullet header at the death before coolly converting the decisive spot-kick.

The tournament which gave Chelsea their greatest agony when they lost on penalties to Manchester United 2008 in Moscow delivered the greatest glory in their 107-year history.

Juan Mata missed Chelsea’s first penalty but David Luiz, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole were all successful. Philipp Lahm, Mario Gomez and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer were all on target for Bayern.

The momentum shifted decisively when Cech denied Ivica Olic and Bastian Schweinsteiger hit the post to leave Chelsea on the brink and present Drogba with his moment of destiny.

This was a victory in the mould of Chelsea’s semi-final win against Barcelona, built on resilience, discipline, defensive organisation and nerve at the crucial times and done without the suspended Terry, Branislav Ivanovic, Ramires and Raul Meireles.

Chelsea became the first London club to claim the European Cup. Six European capitals have produced a winner: Madrid (9), Amsterdam (4), Lisbon (2), Bucharest (1) and Belgrade (1).

Chelsea also emerged as the second side to win the FA Cup and the European Cup in the same season, along with Manchester United in their 1998-1999 Treble-winning season.

  • E/R: Assemblies urged to promote satellite markets

As part of measures to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in the Eastern Region, the Regional Coordinating Council has advised various Municipal and District Assemblies to encourage traders and buyers to patronize satellite markets in their respective areas.

According to the Council, the move is to help ensure social distancing at the various markets.

Most markets in the region continue to record high turnout on market days which poses a risk to both traders and the general public who patronize such facilities.

In an interview with Citi News during a visit to some satellite markets in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality to sensitize traders on the need to practice all protocols, the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Samuel Neurtey Ayertey called on traders to strictly adhere to all protocols.

“This is the Lasi market which I relocated here temporarily as contractors are currently on-site working to finish their original market. Within the next four weeks, the project will be completed and they will move into it to trade peacefully.”

“It is a satellite market and I want to urge all-district and municipal assemblies in the region to revive the satellite markets in their areas and also encourage citizens to patronize them in this season. We all know that we have to avoid crowded places in order not to become vulnerable in contracting the virus so this is a perfect time for various assemblies to revive and encourage satellite markets”.

The Deputy Eastern Regional Minister who also visited the construction site where contractors were busy working on the new Lasi satellite market encouraged them to give their all to ensure they finish on time.

Gospel singer, Philipa Baafi has advised celebrities to keep their private life from the public eye.

The sister-in-law claimed the children had been living with her for four years without the support of their mother and therefore didn’t understand why Joyce Blessing would suddenly come for the children.

Joyce Blessing’s marriage is reported to be at the verge of collapse as all is not well between her and her husband.

  • Playing for Great Olympics was hell, I was paid GHC20 per game – Samuel Affum

Striker Edward Afum has revealed the financial torture he went through at Great Olympics during their campaign in the Division One League in 2019.

In January, the former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko player penned a two-year deal with the Wonder Club.

He played for them in the Normalisation Committee’s Special Competition but had a nightmare

Afum told Television CK: ”The most pathetic part of it is that, after every match, you are paid GH¢ 20 for your transportation fee. Even Bortey [Bernard Dong] was paid the same amount.

”During my whole season at Olympics, I was paid my monthly salary just once. How is possible for me as a player to pay for my transportation to training? No winning bonuses paid.

”I terminated my contract with Olympics because the club failed to honour their part of the contract.

”Two weeks later, the club was readmitted [by Congress of the Ghana Football Association] as Premier League club.”

  • Stop portraying ‘violent character’ – Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo tells ‘soft’ Bulldog

Entertainment Analyst, Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo has cautioned controversial artiste manager and pundit, Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson known in showbiz circles as Bulldog, to tone down his character and stop acting being rowdy.

According to Arnold, Bulldog portrays himself as a troublemaker but character-wise, is a person with a soft heart and nothing close to having a violent persona.

Arnold Baidoo was reacting to some recent comments by Bulldog that he would have destroyed the studios of Accra FM if he had suffered a similar fate as Kidi.

Kidi was ‘sacked’ by Accra FM’s Presenter, Nana Romeo, for turning up on his show late. The Presenter, who was unenthused about the musician’s attitude, scolded him on the programme and refused to grant him an interview aimed at promoting his ‘Blue’ EP.

Bulldog, addressing the issue, castigated the Presenter for subjecting Kidi to such embarrassment since it undermines the musician’s brand.

He added that he would have vandalized the Accra FM studios if he were in the shoes of Kidi.

But Arnold Baidoo, in calling the bluff of Bulldog, wondering why he wants Ghanaians to think he has the ‘balls’ to engage in any such savage act.

I don’t know why Bull sometimes wants to project a violent persona. I don’t know why he does that because knowing Bull, he’s very soft. I mean he’s a lovable person . . . When you’re interacting with Bulldog, he’s loud and so may perceive him to be violent and then his commentary is always trying to project a violent nature. I am worried because that’s not who he is,” he told host Kwesi Aboagye on Peace FM’s ‘Entertainment Review’ programme.

He also condemned Bulldog over his vandalism comments saying the laws of Ghana frowns on it and “Bulldog is not above the laws”.

  • Police Service justifies training of recruits amidst COVID-19 outbreak

The Ghana Police Service has justified its decision to resume the training of recruits amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the service, the action does not violate the Executive Instrument on the imposition of restrictions.

There have been concerns over the resumption of training by some security agencies despite the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country.

Many have said that such exercises are recipes for an outbreak of the virus at the training centres but the Police Service is giving assurances that nothing of the sort will occur.

A statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Sheilla Abayie Buckman, said the service has put in adequate measures to ensure that the recruits are safe.

    Read the statement below:

    1. The Police Administration has cited fake advertisements of ongoing enlistment or recruitment into the Ghana Police Service and wishes to state that the Police Service is not advertising recruitment nor undertaking fresh recruitment processes.

    2. Police recruitment exercises are first published in the major dailies, at least the “Daily Graphic” and “Ghanaian Times” newspapers prior to the start of the recruitment processes.

  • Jeremie Frimpong delighted to win ‘dream’ Scottish Premier League title

Defender Jeremie Frimpong says it is a ‘dream come true’ to win his first Scottish Premier League title.

The Dutch born Ghanaian right back became a first time winner of the competition after Celtic were declared champions following the cancellation of the league due to COVID-19.

“Dreams do come true if you stick to your goal!,” he posted on Twitter.

  • ‘It will be irresponsible to restart football without a 100% safety guarantee’ – Dr. Pambo

Dr. Prince Pambo says it will be “irresponsible to restart football without a 100% safety guarantee”.

The celebrated medical practitioner and sports physician insists there is no need to rush into returning to the pitch if the adherence to safety precaution has not been met.

Dr Pambo, who wants the 2019/2020 season cancelled, wants a 100% safety guarantee before the season can restart.

“It’s more than irresponsible to start football now without a 100% safety guarantee,” he told Asempa FM

“From the word go -we have to take time and start afresh. Those who are pushing that we start football must understand that it won’t be that easy.

“I don’t know the dynamics but if there isn’t a 100 percent safety guarantee, it won’t be proper to risk anyone’s life. Some are claiming we should play behind closed-door – which is fine but a lot will go into it.

“The players, technical staff, administrators and close contact staff must all be quarantined in an air-tight environment before matches.

“They must all be tested before every single league match. The cosmetic ways of doing things won’t happen. There has to be robust testing every week and the wearing of mask.”

Pamboe, who has been vociferous in the campaign against the restart of football in the West African football nation, has been dropped from the Ghana Football Association’s medical committee.
