  • Coronavirus: Well ensure electricity subsidy works well ECG Boss

Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG), Kwame Agyeman-Budu, has assured the people of Ghana that plans by the government to absorb electricity bills following the COVID-19 and the restrictions placed in some parts of the country to contain the situation, will materialize.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, as part of measures to mitigate the effect of the COVID-19 announced a reduction in electricity bills.

The president said last week that: “As part of measures to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on the social and economic life of the country, we have decided on further measures of mitigation for all Ghanaians for the next three months, i.e. April, May and June”.

The government, he said, “will fully absorb electricity bills for the poorest of the poor, i.e. for all lifeline consumers, that is free electricity for persons who consume zero (0) to fifty (50) kilowatt hours a month for this period. In addition, for all other consumers, residential and commercial, Government will absorb, again, fifty percent (50%) of your electricity bill for this period, using your March 2020 bill as your benchmark. For example, if your electricity bill was one hundred cedis (GHS100), you will pay only GHS50, with Government absorbing the remaining fifty cedis (GHS50). This is being done to support industry, enterprises and the service sector in these difficult times, and to provide some relief to households for lost income. Nevertheless, I urge all Ghanaians to exercise discipline in their use of water and electricity”.

In a video message to Ghanaians, the ECG Boss, Mr Agyeman Budu said : “ We will ensure that electricity bills for all lifeline customers (persons who consume zero to 50 kilowatts-hours a month) will be fully adsorbed by the government.

“Non-lifeline prepaid and post-paid customers (Residential and Commercial) will enjoy Fifty Percent (50%) reliefs on their electricity consumption in April, May and June using their March 2020 consumption as the benchmark.”

He added : “All the reliefs will be implemented from 1st May 2020. As we commend the president for the swift and decisive manner in which the COVID-19 global health pandemic is being handled let us also abide fully by the health guidelines.”

  • These countries have more than one capital

The wars, revolutions and fallen empires that transformed the world map in the 20th century have a surprising beneficiary: capital cities.
Only around 40 nations had capital cities in 1900, writes professor David Gordon in an introduction to the book, “Planning Twentieth Century Capital Cities.”
By 2000, that number would grow to more than 200, as new countries emerged out of the collapse of the British and French empires, the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia.
Most countries chose a single city as their capital.
“This is a place where politicians get together to pass laws, where the central administrative apparatus of the country are generally located,” says Gordon, a professor of urban planning at Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario. “There are very much synergies in locating these all together.”
But some countries simply decided that when it comes to capital cities, more is more. From the shores of Benin to the Kingdom of eSwatini, there are nations across the globe with two or more capital cities.
Their reasons vary. When countries are formed from distinct regions, as in the case of the United States or South Africa, Gordon notes that regional competition for power can be a factor.
“None of them wants their rival to get the advantage of being the seat of government,” says Gordon. “There’s very complex politics involved with this sort of thing.”
The United States resolved that conflict by founding Washington, D.C., on a relatively undeveloped stretch of the Potomac River. In contrast, South Africa opted for distributing the national government between the cities of Cape Town, Pretoria and Bloemfontein.
Sometimes, choosing a capital is easier said than done.
The sunset in Dar es Salaam,Tanzania, is lovely to see.

The sunset in Dar es Salaam,Tanzania, is lovely to see.
    Shutterstock
In 1973, Tanzania declared that a new capital would be established in Dodoma, hundreds of miles inland from the colonial-era capital of Dar es Salaam.
“Empires had central administrative places for each colony, which were typically on the coast, so they had good access by sea back to the imperial capital,” says Gordon. “A trend in decolonizing countries is to move the capital into the center of the country to make it more accessible to all citizens.”
But the cultural pull of historic capitals can be hard to overcome. Dar es Salaam still hosts many government functions, and it wasn’t until 2019 that the Tanzanian president moved his office to the “new” capital of Dodoma.
Tanzania isn’t the only country where leaders dithered over where to put the capital.
“Canada took years and years to decide on Ottawa,” says Gordon. “The capital used to move every two years, because the Federation could not agree on where the capital should go.”
As travelers wait out the coronavirus pandemic, armchair traveling and hopefully planning their next adventures, consider which capital of these countries to visit in future — either or perhaps both?
Politics aside, Gordon sees an upside to his own country’s complicated geographical past, and to a world map whose nations maintain more than one capital city: “It’s great for Trivial Pursuit.”

The energetic port city of Cotonou welcomes travelers to Benin with colorful hustle and swinging rhythms, and it comes as no surprise that the country’s biggest city is also the seat of government.
The official capital, though, is an hour away in Porto-Novo. Here, the blare of big-city life gives way to tree-lined streets and historic architecture.
A division of powers between the two cities has been in place since before Benin achieved full independence from France in 1960.

    Bolivia: La Paz and Sucre

Wrapped in the snowy peaks of the Andes Mountains, La Paz is a show-stopper of a capital city.
Cable cars drift above a tangle of downtown streets, and an independent populace fills historic squares during frequent protests. But while La Paz is the administrative capital of Bolivia, the constitutional capital is hundreds of miles away in the city of Sucre.
In the early days of colonial rule, silver from the mines surrounding Sucre turned the mountain city into an Andean powerhouse. A burgeoning tin industry helped make upstart La Paz a fierce rival for economic and political power, and it remains the seat of Bolivian government to this day.

  • Ghana obtains $500m debt repayment freeze from World Bank

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that Ghana has obtained a $500-million dollar freeze in debt and interest repayment for the rest of this year from the World Bank.

The move is part of a broader pan-african effort for debt relief due to the negative impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the President said.

In his seventh update to the nation on COVID-19, the President said last Friday, African Finance Ministers, led by Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, and his South African counterpart, achieved a nine-month debt standstill from the World Bank for all qualifying members of the International Development Association (IDA), starting from May 1, 2020.

The total amount for the beneficiaries on the continent is $44 billion.

“In the case of Ghana, this amounts to a freeze in principal and interest payments for the year, amounting to $500 million,” he explained.

“This will create greater fiscal space to help make the Ghanaian economy much more resilient.”

President Akufo-Addo lauded Ken Ofori-Atta, who is leading the continent’s debt relief efforts for his hard work and outstanding leadership.

He urged him to leave no stone unturned to achieve an even greater and comprehensive debt relief programme for Africa.

The Government welcomed the three billion Ghana cedis credit and stimulus package from the commercial banks, under the auspices of the Ghana Association of Bankers, with support from the Bank of Ghana, to revitalise Ghanaian industries.

The stimulus package is to offer financial relief to especially the pharmaceutical companies.

Additionally, the President said, the one billion United States-dollar- Rapid Credit Facility, secured from the International Monetary Fund, without any pre-condition, and approved by Parliament, would be used to help close the financial gap created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

So far, the Government has allocated a GHc1.2 billion, under the Coronavirus Alleviation Programme, to support households and businesses.

Out of that amount, GHc280 million would be used to provide food for the vulnerable and free water for all Ghanaians in April, May and June.

  • ‘Armed bandits’ kill dozens of villagers in northwest Nigeria, say police

Gunmen killed 47 people in attacks on villages in the northwestern Nigerian state of Katsina in the early hours of Saturday, local police said.

“Armed bandits”, some of whom wielded AK 47 guns, carried out the attacks, Katsina police said in a statement on Sunday.

Hundreds of people have been killed in the last year by criminal gangs carrying out robberies and kidnappings in northwest Nigeria.

Such attacks have added to security challenges in Africa’s most populous country, which is already struggling to contain Islamist insurgencies in the northeast and communal violence over grazing rights in central states.

Gunmen, some with AK 47 guns, carried out the attacks in three local government authorities in the state in the early hours of Saturday between 12:30 a.m. (2330 GMT) and around 3 a.m., Katsina police said in its statement.

“There was reports of organised and simultaneous attacks in villages in Danmusa, Dutsenma and Safana by groups of armed bandits,” the statement said of some of the attacks.

“Detachments of Police, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Airforce, Civil Defence and DSS (Department of State Services) have been drafted to the area,” it added.

President Muhammadu Buhari, in a statement, said he would not tolerate large scale killing of innocent people by criminal gangs.

“In line with my commitment to security of the people, these attacks will be met with decisive force,” said Buhari, who is from Katsina.

  • Ghanaian Times: Time to pay attention to meningitis outbreak in the north

In the midst of the growing spread of COVID-19 across communities in the country, there appears to be the disease called meningitis whose outbreak in the five Northern regions is not receiving enough attention.

Unfortunately, the disease, which breaks out annually at this time of the year, has as of Wednesday, April 15, affected at least 409 persons in the five regions in the Northern sector of the country, with 40 deaths, according the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

A statement issued by the GHS Director-General, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, said the death rate in the affected regions, comprising Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East and Upper West, as of Wednesday, represented a 15 per cent fatality rate.

According to him, the current outbreak is a new strain with no known vaccine which is one of the reasons for the high fatalities.

“Though there is no vaccine for the strain causing the current outbreak, effective treatment is available. There is the need to ensure early reporting and initiation of treatment to significantly improve outcome and improve survival rate”, he said.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye, therefore, advised residents in those areas to report early for treatment since investigations had shown that, the high fatality was due to late reporting of cases.

Although, it would appear that the GHS Regional Directorate is taking the appropriate steps to deal with the outbreak, the Ghanaian Times is concerned about the high fatality rate.

Our major worry is that, the outbreak of meningitis has coincided with the spread of COVID-19 which the country is desperately battling to contain.

That coincidence would be disastrous and too much for the country to handle as both diseases are deadly and could wipe out hundreds of people within a few days if care is not taken.

The Ghanaian Times therefore calls for intensified efforts at all levels to contain the disease by giving substantial attention to the meningitis disease just as we are giving to Covid-19.

The Ghana Health Service should not leave any stone unturned in managing it. The needed supplies, funds and personnel must be made available to combat the disease.

We must not treat the disease as a seasonal one which would vanish once its season is over. We should bear in mind that 40 lives have been lost already and more could go if we do not fortify our defence.

The good news is that the disease can be treated and so we urge the public to play their role in the combat, by reporting the cases as soon as they feel ill, for early treatment.

We have lost more lives than we should and we must do all that we can to prevent more from being lost.

  • Singapore reports record jump in coronavirus cases

Singapore reported a record daily jump of more than 1,400 coronavirus cases Monday, taking its total to over 8,000, with almost all new infections linked to dormitories housing foreign labourers.

The city-state was initially successful in keeping its outbreak in check with a strict regime of testing and contact-tracing, but is now facing a fast-moving second wave.

Health authorities in the financial hub, which now has the highest number of infections in Southeast Asia, reported 1,426 new cases, taking its total to 8,014, including 11 deaths.

Cases have surged since authorities started carrying out widespread testing of foreign workers living in crowded dormitory complexes, many of whom are construction workers from South Asia.

Around 200,000 workers live in dorms and typically toil for long hours earning in the region of $400 to $500 a month building the city-state’s glittering skyscrapers and shopping malls.

Following criticism of poor living conditions in the dorms, the government moved thousands of workers to other sites — including apartments and floating accommodation usually used in offshore industries — to try to lessen the chances of infection.

Several dormitories with serious outbreaks have been quarantined, with workers not allowed to leave the premises for two weeks. The government is providing meals, and cleaning services have been ramped up.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the weekend warned that the number of foreign workers found to have contracted COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, is likely to rise further as more are tested.

“Fortunately, the vast majority of the cases are mild because the workers are young,” Lee wrote on Facebook.

While the government is working to stop transmission in the dorms “it will take some time to show results, so we must expect to see more dorm cases for while longer”, he said.

The city-state this month introduced tough restrictions aimed at halting the spread of the virus, including closing schools and advising people to stay at home.

Since then, the number of new infections reported among Singaporeans has slowed — only 16 of the cases reported Monday were citizens or people holding permanent residency status.

  • Germany starts opening up as coronavirus outbreak ‘under control’

Germany takes its first steps back towards normality on Monday, with smaller shops in some regions opening up for the first time in a month after politicians declared the coronavirus “under control”.

From florists to fashion stores, the majority of shops smaller than 800 square metres (8,600 square feet) will be allowed to welcome customers again, in a first wave of relaxations to strict curbs on public life introduced last month.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and regional state premiers announced the decision to reopen last week, though they have been careful to cast it as no more than a cautious first step.

While the first shops will open their doors on Monday, each of Germany’s 16 states is set to lift the restrictions at a slightly different pace.

In some states such as the capital Berlin, reopening will take a little longer.

Merkel, who has been praised for her handling of the coronavirus crisis, is hoping to reinvigorate the ailing German economy, which officially entered into recession last week.

    ‘Fragile’

With 139,897 confirmed cases and 4,294 deaths as of Sunday, Germany has been one of the countries worst hit by COVID-19, but also one of the quickest to react.

On Friday, the Robert Koch Institute for public health announced that the rate of infection — the number of people each ill person contaminates — had dropped below one for the first time, leading Health Minister Jens Spahn to declare the virus “under control”.

Yet Merkel, who was herself quarantined for two weeks earlier this month before testing negative for the virus, has warned that Germany’s success remains “fragile”.

“We will not be able to go back to our normal lives for a long time,” said her conservative party colleague Armin Laschet, the state premier of North-Rhine Westphalia, the country’s most populous region.

In an interview with Der Spiegel weekly, Laschet warned that some coronavirus restrictions could last until 2021.

A ban on gatherings of more than two people and a requirement to stand more than 1.5 metres apart from others in public areas remain in force.

That means that hairdressers, initially deemed an essential business, cannot open until at least May 4.

Cultural venues, bars, leisure centres and beauty salons will also remain closed for the time being, while large-scale public events such as concerts and football matches have been banned until August 31.

But Germans can look forward to at least some relaxations to the existing shutdown although they have not been welcomed by everyone.

With larger shops unable to open, the German Trade Association warned Friday of a possible “distortion of competition”.

Yet Economy Minister Peter Altmaier defended the 800-square-metre limit, saying that “the belt can only be loosened bit by bit”.

    Schools reopening

Schools will also be partially reopened in the coming weeks, with most states set to welcome back older students from May 4.

Education policy is traditionally decided at state level in Germany, and Bavaria, the region worst hit by the virus so far, will keep its schools closed for an extra week.

On April 29, regional education ministers are set to present concrete plans on how social distancing can still be enforced in the classroom.

Germany hopes to combine the lifting of restrictions with a more efficient tracing of the spread of COVID-19.

The country hopes to ramp up testing — it has already tested around two million people — and aims to produce around 50 million protective masks, including 10 million of the higher efficiency FFP2 standard a week from August.

Though not yet obligatory, Merkel said her government “strongly advises” wearing a mask in public.

With more movement of the population expected as shops reopen, eastern states Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony have made masks obligatory on public transport.

In doing so, they have followed the example of the eastern city of Jena, which unilaterally enforced the wearing of masks earlier this month.

According to German media, the city has had no new cases in a week.

  • Akufo-Addo chose politics over science Ablakwa bemoans

Former Deputy Education Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says it obvious that the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo chose politics over science.

The President on Sunday April 19, 2020 announced the lifting of the ban which comes into effect on Monday April 20, 2020 at about 1am revoking the partial lockdown in the Greater Accra Region, Greater Kumasi and Tema.

This decision was reached after government put in place measures such as having one testing facility in each region, enhanced contact tracing, the production of PPEs locally, the date available to government and the severe effect of the partial lockdown on economic activities.

    Akufo-Addo

He mentioned that lifting the restriction does not mean the country is letting her guard down adding that all other measures announced earlier still holds.

But reacting to the move by the government, Okudzeto Ablakwah who is a leading member of the National Democratic Congress says the President chose his parochial interest over the national interest.

He said “Many experts are emphatic that our President chose politics over science. May God save us”.

Ghana has now recorded 1,042 positive cases after an enhanced contact tracing.

  • Allowing movement of persons doesn’t mean we’re letting our guard down Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said lifting the three-week restriction on movement in some parts of the country imposed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus does not mean the government is letting down its guard in the fight against the virus.

According to the President, apart from the free movement of persons all other measures are still in force to control the spread of the disease.

Addressing the nation in a televised address on Sunday, 19 April 2020, Nana Akufo-Addo said: “I must make it clear, at the outset, that lifting these restrictions does not mean we are letting our guard down. All other measures are still firmly in place. For the avoidance of doubt, the earlier measures announced on Wednesday, 15th March, which have been extended, are still very much in force, and have not been relaxed. I am demanding even greater adherence to these measures.

“In here, I am referring to the suspension of all public gatherings, including conferences, workshops, funerals, parties, nightclubs, drinking spots, beaches, festivals, political rallies, religious activities and sporting events. All educational facilities, private and public, are to remain closed. Businesses and other workplaces can continue to operate, observing staff management and workplace protocols with the view to achieving social distancing and hygiene protocols.

“Operators of public transport, including our buses, trotros and taxis, are to continue to run with a minimum number of passengers, as they have been doing for the last three weeks in maintaining social distancing. They must also continue to ensure the maintenance of enhanced hygienic conditions in all vehicles and terminals, by providing, amongst others, hand sanitizers, running water and soap for washing of hands. Domestic airlines are required to adhere to the same protocols.”

Nana Akufo-Addo added that “the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, together with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, will continue to implement measures to enhance conditions of hygiene in markets across the country, and expand the policy of alternate-days-for-alternative-products to improve social distancing in all markets.”

Explaining why he lifted the ban on movement of persons, the President said the country now has the ability to undertake aggressive contact tracing of infected persons, the enhancement of our capacity to test, the expansion in the numbers of our treatment and isolation centres, the better understanding of the dynamism of the virus, the ramping up of domestic capacity to produce our own personal protective equipment, sanitisers and medicines, the modest successes chalked at containing the spread of the virus in Accra and Kumasi, and the severe impact on the poor and vulnerable.

  • Coronavirus: African Union urged to postpone trading date of AfCFTA

CUTS Ghana, a research and public policy think tank, has called on the African Union to immediately postpone the scheduled date for the commencement of trading under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

It said the proposed July one date for the commencement of trade under the AfCFTA was no longer feasible due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Delaying the event for at least six months from the scheduled dates, CUTS said, would allow countries and businesses to recover from the pandemic to enable a smooth take off of trade.

A statement issued on Thursday, and signed by Mr Appiah Kusi Adomako, the Country Director of CUTS International, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said it was undeniable that the virus had already taken a significant toll on lives and the economies across the continent.

The projected revenue of African governments had been hard hit and majority of businesses, it said, were not in a good shape to take advantage of the agreement.

It explained: “The proposed postponement is premised on the hope that the infection curve would be flattened by the third quarter of this year, and the possibility of the availability of a vaccine for Covid-19 early next year.

“If we decide to stick to the July 1st date, some countries could use the virus outbreak as a pretext to close their national borders to goods and services, since goods and services cannot move without people,” the statement.

It explained that a postponement of the date would also allow for the unfinished agenda on the protocols on goods to be completed and also permit the Secretariat, which is headquartered in Accra, Ghana, to be fully set up in terms of personnel and staff to ensure that trading took off with no hitch.

CUTS International is an independent non-profit economic policy research, advocacy and capacity building think tank, with regional centers in Accra, Lusaka, and Nairobi, Geneva, Delhi, Jaipur and Washington, DC.

CUTS’ functional areas are in trade and development, regional integration, competition policy, economic and investment regulation as well as consumer education.

  • Veteran sports journalist Sometymer fires Ben Nti over ‘silly’ Dr KK Sarpong coup allegations

Renowned sports journalist Sometymer Otuo Acheampong has written a six-point rebuttal against former Asante Kotoko administrative manager Ben Nti who accused him of masterminding the activities which led to the exit of Dr KK Sarpong as the club’s Executive Chairman.

The Oyerapa FM Head of Sports and lead presenter is frothing at the mouth for allegedly executing an agenda which saw the former Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) boss resign.

Dr. Sarpong was accused of under-declaring sums of players and was also unpopular for his transfer policy where several top players were sold to foreign club.

Acheampong, who is the General Manager of Division One League side Asokwa Deportivo FC, has penned down a lengthy reply to the allegations made on Kumasi-based Hello FM by Ben Nti.

Below, is the detailed reaction from Otuo-Acheampong Barimah Boadaa:

It is factually incorrect to suggest that Dr Sarpong’s exit was orchestrated by any media person or persons because the good Dr resigned and subsequently took Kotoko to court and demand monies owed him by Asante Kotoko, an act which was and is still unprecedented in the history of the club.

Since Mr Nti’s was bent on destroying my reputation to achieve a planned result, he could have found some shred of credibility if he had mentioned one name of the supposed media friends i gathered to convince Dr Sarpong to tender in his resignation before the great King of Asanteman.

I did not mince words about my respect for Ben, but wasn’t it surprising that he was saying this for the first time since Dr sarpong left office about 5 or 6 years ago.

I would not want to believe that Mr Nti is all over the place lately because he has been promised a route back to the Kotoko Management or is it true that a way is being paved for his boss to come back. I have had calls suggesting that I’m a potential stumbling block to the above hatched plans.

It is instructive to note that I have never ever met a single media person to discuss the exit of any Kotoko Chairman in my over two decades of journalism practice. And to those supposed media friends of Mr Nti, one of you should come and leak evidence to save his reputation since he is struggling to find any.

Those who really know me and journalists/presenters who have worked with me will easily attest that I have always minded my ‘business’ and do not meddle in the affairs of other people. I do not obviously take delight in who becomes Chairman of Asante Kotoko, though I must admit that I have offered counsel to some Kotoko chairmen who demanded my opinion on certain matters on many occasions. Mr Herbert Mensah, Nana Bantamahene, the late Major Larson, Mr Opoku Nti et al at one point or the other sought my opinion on some issues. I do recall my heavy involvement in the recruitment of certain players even under Dr Sarpong’s regime. The likes of Awal Muhammed ,Yaw Frimpong etc were brought in when things became difficult for Dr Sarpong in his first season.

Let me conclude by saying that, I have demonstrated enough professionalism in my career, something Ben Nti and those who sent him are aware of, and cannot erase. Asante Kotoko belongs to Otumfuo and its supporters. My close contact with the great club came way many years before the likes of Ben Nti joined. His attempt to parade me against the rank has failed big time.

I shall continue to have an opinion on Kotoko in so far as I remain a journalist.

I have been in club administration both directly and indirectly for a very long time and served on the GHALCA Executive Council for over three years and don’t need people like Ben Nti to educate me on administration, after all I hold a First Class [Degree] in Public Administration and an Msc in Supply Chain Management and Currently manage one of the biggest radio stations in Kumasi and my other businesses so well.

  • Relaxation of lockdown encouraging Pentecostal and Charismatic Council

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council has described the lifting of three week lockdown on Accra and other parts of the country as a welcoming move.

The GPCC, in a statement Monday, said easing the restrictions is “quite encouraging especially for many Ghanaians who are in the informal sector of the economy.”

“The Council is however appealing to all Ghanaians not to take this relaxation of the lockdown for granted but should to continue to observe strictly the measures rolled out by government to minimise or stop the spread of the virus,” GPCC said.

President Akufo-Addo announced on Sunday the lockdown on Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Kumasi will be lifted starting Monday, April 20.

Public gatherings including parties, funerals, clubs and beaches remain banned.  “All educational facilities, private and public, are to remain closed,” Akufo-Addo said.

  • Calling off lockdown doesnt mean we are out of the pandemic Akufo-Addo

Lifting the lockdown in Accra and other parts of the country does not mean Ghana is free from the Covid-19 pandemic, President Nana Akufo-Addo says.

Speaking in a televised address on Sunday, Akufo-Addo said Ghanaians must continue to abide by all other measures put in place to contain and defeat the novel coronavirus.

Ban on public gatherings, including religious activities, parties, beaches, clubs are still in force across the country, the president said.

Schools and universities also remain closed.

Delivering his 7th address on measures taken by his administration to fight the disease, Akufo-Addo said “We will continue to monitor closely events in some hotspots…”

“Whenever the situation so warrants, a community in which the virus is identified as becoming prevalent will be locked-down, until there is a clear understanding of the trajectory of the virus that will allow us to contain it,” he said.

    Relaxing lockdown welcoming

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council has, meanwhile, described lifting of three week lockdown as a welcoming.

The GPCC, in a statement, said easing the restrictions is “quite encouraging especially for many Ghanaians who are in the informal sector of the economy.”

“The Council is however appealing to all Ghanaians not to take this relaxation of the lockdown for granted but should to continue to observe strictly the measures rolled out by government to minimise or stop the spread of the virus,” GPCC said.

Social media reactions to the move, however, suggest the decision is unpopular.

Scores of persons posted on various social media platforms suggesting that the government is leaving the fight to the discretion of citizens.
