  • COVID-19: Techiman market to be closed over lack of social distancing

The Authorities at the Techiman Municipal Assembly in the Bono East Region have announced plans to temporarily close the Techiman Main Market to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The temporary closure of the market takes effect from Wednesday, 22nd April 2020.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Techiman, John Donyina speaking to the media said: “The assembly has made some alternative arrangement to use school parks and some open spaces in town as satellite markets for the various groupings which will be on shift systems to give proper meaning to the social distancing protocol.”

This forms part of measures put in place by the assembly to deal with a possible outbreak of COVID-19 as traders across the country visit the market weekly.

“It is imperative that we take action now to protect the most vulnerable groups within the municipality. In view of this, the Techiman Security Council with Techiman Traditional Council and other stakeholders on Friday, 17 April 2020, having taken cognisance of how fast the virus could spread to the individuals has decided that the Techiman Market be closed temporarily,” he said.

    Earlier warning

The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama had earlier warned of an imminent closure of markets where vendors fail to comply with social distancing directives.

According to her, the need to enforce all relevant protocols to contain the spread of COVID-19 will be paramount in all dealings with the market vendors in the wake of the pandemic.

This follows nationwide disinfection of markets.

    Affected markets

Traders at the Dr Mensah section of the Kumasi Central Market, Kpando and its environs in the Volta Region,  Kasoa New and Old Markets were closed temporarily.

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly converted the Takoradi Jubilee Park into a market as a measure to enforce social distancing at the Takoradi Market Circle.

  • Coronavirus: Italy PM Conte says lockdown exit plan coming

Italy will announce its plan to gradually exit its lockdown by the end of this week, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said.

In a Facebook post, Mr Conte said the country could not give up its policy of “maximum caution”, and said Italy would reopen in line with “serious scientific policy”.

“A reasonable expectation is that we will apply it from May 4,” he said.

Italy has reported 24,114 deaths, the highest recorded toll in Europe.

Data released on Monday showed the number of people officially confirmed as infected with coronavirus had dropped for the first time since the outbreak began. Italian authorities said the symbolic drop of 20 cases was a “positive development”.

The third-largest economy in the eurozone has been under lockdown measures since 9 March, brought in to tackle the spread of the virus.

Countries across Europe are slowly beginning to ease the restrictions, on businesses and on education. There is however no coordination between states.

Some countries like Denmark have already reopened primary schools, while Spain’s government is discussing on Tuesday how to ease its tight restrictions and allow children outside.

    What did Italy’s PM say?

Mr Conte posted his statement on Facebook on Tuesday morning, insisting the government is working non-stop to coordinate moves towards “phase two” of its lockdown – “coexistence” with the virus.

“I would like to be able to say, let’s open everything. Right away,” he wrote. “But such a decision would be irresponsible. It would make the contagion curve rise uncontrollably and would jeopardise all the efforts that we’ve made until now.”

“The easing of measures must take place on the basis of a well-structured and articulated plan,” he said, adding that Italy “cannot abandon the line of maximum caution”.

Current national quarantine restrictions officially expire on 3 May. Mr Conte said he would announce the plan for how to leave the lockdown “before the end of this week”.

“A reasonable prediction is that we will apply it from 4 May,” he concluded.

    What about other European lockdowns?

Many European nations have slowly started to ease restrictions this week, with Germany, Austria, Denmark and the Czech Republic among countries to allow certain businesses to reopen.

There is however no coordination at an EU level, and countries are reopening at different rates.

Denmark was the first in Europe to allow pupils back in the classroom, with students under the age of 12 returning to education last week.

Norway allowed kindergarten students to return on Monday, provided they bring their own lunches and follow new hygiene rules.

But older students across Europe remain at home. France has officially extended its nationwide lockdown until 11 May, but even after then schools are not expected to return immediately.

“On May 11, we are not going to have all the students enter the classroom, as if we were resuming normally,” the education minister Jean-Michel Blanquer said on Tuesday.

Primary schools will likely return that week, followed by final year students from 18 May and all pupils from 25 May, he said.

Spain has implemented one of the strictest lockdowns. Children of any age there are not currently allowed outside for any reason.

The government is expected to ease those measures on Tuesday, with reports suggesting those under 12 years old will be allowed out under tight restrictions.

  • Atletico Madrid to double Thomas Parteys wages to fend off Arsenals interest

Atletico Madrid are bent on keeping their priceless midfielder in Thomas Teye Partey and have decided to double his wages to £130,000 a week in order to ward off interest from Arsenal.

Arsenal are in pursuit for Thomas Partey, having reportedly tabled down £43.6 million bid, which is the release clause for the signature of the Ghanaian midfielder from Atletico Madrid.

Thomas Partey has been very keen in the scheme of things of Diego Simeone this season and he has established his place in the watertight Atletico Madrid midfield.

Atletico Madrid in their quest to maintain the stability in the team have reportedly decided to double Partey’s wages which will see him receive £130,000 a week.

The proposed new deal would see Partey’s release clause increased to £87.2m.

Partey, a defensive midfielder, has been capped by Ghana on 27 occasions, and, at the age of 26, is approaching what should be the best years of his career.

Arsenal can already call upon Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi at the base of the midfield, but Partey, it would appear, represents a superior option.

Partey joined Atletico as a youngster in 2012 and featured for their B side before gaining experience on loan at Mallorca and Almeria.

He has now made 174 appearances for Atletico and won the Europa League in 2018.

  • Why my love for Akufo-Addo has increased Bibi Bright

Just as many people are praising President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his effective ways in fighting the deadly Coronavirus, Ghanaian actress Bibi Bright says the love she has for Nana Addo has increased to a 100 per cent.

“It takes a bold President to take the decisions he has taken in fighting this deadly virus. To pay water bills for every Ghanaian for three months is no joke. Just look at the drastic measures he took in fighting the virus.

“Giving soft loans to businesses and making sure everyone is comfortable is just overwhelming. Everyone is praising him because he is a good President and cares about his people,” she told Graphic Showbiz recently.

According to Bibi Bright, she is not praising the President because she is a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but truth be told, Nana Addo has proven that he is the best President and will do anything to protect his people.

To Bibi Bright, who believes Nana Addo will win again when we go for elections this year, the things the President has done during his four-year tenure are enough for everyone to know that he is the best President.

“If we have Nigerians and other African countries praising Nana Addo for his good efforts to take this country to the next level, then it means he is doing something right and it is about time we all rallied behind him and gave him the support he needs to rule this country,” she said.

According to Bibi Bright, although we are in trying times and she wished everything would come back to normal so that we could all live our normal lives, it was better we obeyed the directives from the President.

“He said we should stay home while the authorities fight this pandemic and I will plead with Ghanaians to obey that. We are all trying to fight this virus and stand together again because it is not easy to stay home, lose money by not attending to your businesses and other engagements,” she stated.

On how she is coping with the lockdown, Bibi Bright said it had become necessary for everyone to stay alive and be careful, especially those who had large families.

“I have four children and a husband. Can you imagine if anyone of us contracts the deadly virus? The best thing is to stay home and obey what the government says,” she said.

Bibi Bright and her team recently reached out to the needy and provided food for them. She explained that that was her way of helping the needy. She thanked everyone, including the police, who was there to support.

Talking about movies, Bibi said she had featured in some movies and was producing other movies but she had had to put all on hold and she was hopeful that everything would be calm for her to continue.

“This is not the best time to shoot movies or engage in other works related to acting. Everyone is trying his or her best to stay alive and when everything normalises, we will bounce back. For now everything is on hold,” she said.

Hon. Frema Osei-Opare will also like to take the opportunity to educate the public and beneficiaries that the lifting of the restriction calls for more carefulness so as they enjoy their new found freedom and food they should think of the caution they have to exercise as they go back to work.

Ghana defender Edwin Gyimah says leaving Orlando Pirates three years ago is the worst football decision he ever made.

Gyimah parted ways with the Buccaneers to join Swedish side Helsingborg in 2017 following a fallout with then-Pirates coach Ertugral.

The 29-year-old, who currently plays for Black Leopards in the Absa Premiership laments the decision to leave Orlando Pirates despite denying his exit had nothing to do with his former coach.

“You know in football there are so many things we soccer players need to learn,” Gyimah tells KickOff.com.

“I feel like so many players have learned those kind of lessons. Because one, our private lives play a big role in the game, people we keep around us in our private lives, the people who we take advice from, they play a big role in our career.

“So leaving Pirates… bad friends and the bad decisions from my side, because I didn’t really know the culture of South Africans… I didn’t know, even though I’ve been here since SuperSport [United].

“With the Pirates thing it’s really about something that’s outside football that I couldn’t control, that affected me to take that decision. It wasn’t about the Muhsin incident at all. It was something off the field that pushed me to take that decision.

“You know there are a lot of players who are being influenced by people outside of football. Some will say ‘you playing for Pirates but maybe if you leave Pirates you can go to Europe, you can go here’… you know there are so many things. There are so many kind of advisors that a player gets off the field.

“You know leaving Pirates was the biggest decision in my life that I could take. I regret leaving Pirates because I feel like there was so much in me that I could have offered for the team.

“The supporters loved me, everybody loved me at Pirates, there were no problems there. I feel like I could offer so much for the team, even now I think like I could offer so much.

“When I watch their game, when I watch how they play, I feel like I could still offer something for them. The supporters loved me…

“It was my own decision, nobody chased me out at Pirates. Let me be honest, leaving Pirates I regret because there are some decisions that I have made in the past that didn’t help me.

“The day I left Pirates, that’s when everything stopped in my career. That’s when everything stopped in my life.

  • U.S. Treasury releases US$2.9 billion in airline support, finalizes payroll agreements

The U.S. Treasury Department said on Monday it had disbursed $2.9 billion in initial payroll assistance to 54 smaller passenger carrier and two major passenger airlines, while it finalized grant agreements with six major airlines.

The Treasury is initially giving major airlines 50% of funds awarded and releasing the rest in a series of payments. In total, Treasury is awarding U.S. passenger airlines $25 billion in funds earmarked for payroll costs.

Major airlines must repay 30% of the funds in low-interest loans and grant Treasury warrants equal to 10% of the loan amount, while airlines receiving $100 million or less do not need to repay any funds or issue warrants to the government.

Treasury said on Monday it had finalized grant agreements with Allegiant Air, American Airlines Group Inc, Delta Air Lines Inc, Southwest Airlines Co, Spirit Airlines Inc, and United Airlines Holdings Inc.

Air carriers have been devastated by the coronavirus pandemic and seen U.S. travel demand fall by 95%.

Southwest said it would receive half of the $3.2 billion payroll award immediately and the remainder in installments during May, June and July.

Separately, Treasury said Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways Corp and SkyWest Airlines had also indicated that they planned to participate. The 12 major airlines represent nearly 95% of U.S. airline capacity.

Airlines receiving funds cannot lay off employees before Sept. 30 or change collective bargaining agreements and must agree to restrictions on buybacks, executive compensation and dividends.

Treasury is now considering separate requests for additional assistance from another $25 billion loan fund for passenger airlines. United said on Monday it was seeking $4.5 billion in loans from the program, while American said last week it was applying for a $4.75 billion loan under that program, and Alaska and Horizon said they were applying for $1.1 billion in loans.

United said on Monday it expected to cut passenger capacity by 90% in June.

Treasury is still considering how to award $4 billion in payroll assistance to cargo carriers and $3 billion to airport contractors like airplane caterers.

Estimated global airline losses from the coronavirus pandemic have climbed to $314 billion, 25% more than previously forecast, the International Air Transport Association said last week.

  • Qualified foreign nationals can hold Ghana cards NIA

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has refuted claims that the Authority has unlawfully issued Ghana cards to some foreign nationals, specifically to a Chinese national.

This follows a video circulating on social media suggesting that the possession of a Ghana card by a Chinese was unlawful.

In a statement issued and signed by Mr Francis Palmdeti, the Head of Corporate Affairs, and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra, the Authority said issuance of Ghana Card to resident foreigners in Ghana was backed by law.

It said a Chinese or other foreign nationals may lawfully possess a Ghana card as contained in Section 2 (2) of NIA Act 2006, Act 707, and Section 7 of National Identity Register Act 2008, Act 750.

“By virtue of these legal provisions NIA is mandated to register and issue Ghana cards not only to Ghanaians living in Ghana and abroad but also to foreigners legally resident in Ghana.

“The NIA has since 2012 been issuing Ghana cards to qualified foreigners who have lived in the country for a cumulative period of 90 days and above as per the National Identity Register Regulations LI 2111 (2012),” it stated.

Touching on some key features, the statement said the cards issued to Ghanaians had both ECOWAS Identity boldly printed with ECOWAS and the Ghana flag at the top left and right corners respectively.

But the card issued to foreigners had boldly printed on its face in red “NON CITIZEN” and it was marked same in the National Identity Register (database).

Although the law prescribes that the National Identity Card issued by NIA should be known as the Ghana card, it said this name was, however, not printed on the face of the cards issued to either Ghanaians or to foreigners.

Thus, a Ghanaian or a foreigner may lawfully possess the Ghana card as long as he or she had complied with the respective registration requirements.

It further stated that unlike the Ghana Card issued to Ghanaians which was valid for 10 years, the NON CITIZEN Ghana Card issued to foreigners was, however, valid for one year, renewable annually.

Eligible foreigners paid a fee of 120 dollars to register and acquire the Ghana card and 60 dollars for renewal.

The families of four passengers who were killed in the helicopter crash with NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna have launched legal proceedings against the firms that owned and operated the chopper, media reports said.

The lawsuits were filed Sunday in the Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of the families of basketball coach John Altobelli, his wife Keri and their 13-year-old daughter Alyssa — who played basketball with Gianna — and of assistant coach Christina Mauser, the TMZ website said.

The complaints accuse Island Express Helicopters and Island Express Holding Corp. of negligence.

Bryant’s widow Vanessa filed a lawsuit nearly two months ago against the operators of the helicopter and the estate of the pilot, Ara Zobayan, who was among the nine killed when they crashed in rugged terrain west of Los Angeles on January 26.

Her complaint faults the company for allowing the helicopter to fly in “heavy fog and low clouds.”

The helicopter was headed to Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, where his daughter was set to play.

The other victims included another of Gianna’s basketball teammates, Payton Chester, and Payton’s mother Sarah.

  • GPHA suspends charges on uncleared cargo caused by coronavirus lockdown

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), has suspended all applicable charges that were initially imposed on goods which had not been cleared from the ports during the lockdown period.

The Authority had earlier announced that it had begun expediting the clearance process for all port users to clear their goods from the various seaports.

It also raised charges on goods which clients delayed in clearing; a development the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), kicked against.

Meanwhile, in a recent statement, the Authority says it has directed for the suspension of all applicable charges, especially demurrage, detention and storage rent charges on cargo which have remained uncleared since the lockdown came into effect on 30th March, 2020.

GPHA in the statement explained that it took the decision in order not to jeopardize the fight against COVID-19 in the country.

  • Trump says will sign order to ‘suspend immigration into US’ due to Covid-19

Donald Trump said he would temporarily ban immigration to the United States because of the “invisible enemy” of the coronavirus, as angry Americans took to the streets to demand an end to crippling lockdowns.

In just four months, the virus has turned the world upside down, confining half the planet indoors and killing nearly 170,000 on its march through virtually every country.

Drastic measures never before seen in peacetime have shredded the global economy, resulting in the extraordinary spectacle of oil prices turning negative as demand evaporates.

World leaders are agonizing over the right moment to loosen restrictions, terrified of a second wave but aware their citizens need to work and live amid growing signs of social tension.

US President Trump, who has encouraged anti-lockdown protests roiling parts of the country, said Monday he would halt immigration – a theme long popular with his supporters.

“In light of the attack from the invisible enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!” he tweeted.

At least 22 million Americans have lost their jobs since sweeping lockdowns were implemented to slow the spread of the virus, and exasperation was growing in some parts of the country.

Hundreds took part in a “Patriots Rally” in Pennsylvania, one waving a banner proclaiming “Give me liberty or give me death.”

Rose Bayer, 50, said it was “crazy” to shut down the world over a disease she said has a recovery rate of about 98 percent.

“People will starve, they’ll commit suicide, they’ll lose everything over this. The cure, like Trump said, cannot be worse than the disease,” she said.

While such demos have captured much attention, more than four in five Americans would approve of a national stay-at-home order, according to a recent Quinnipiac poll.

But isolated protests are also springing up elsewhere with hundreds defying social distancing rules in Vladikavkaz, in Russia’s Northern Caucasus, to demonstrate against the lockdown and economic hardship.

Sporadic clashes also broke out in a downtrodden northern Paris suburb with protesters launching fireworks at police they accuse of enforcing the restrictions too harshly.

    ‘Like a war situation’

In hard-hit Europe, several countries are cautiously creeping out from confinement measures, buoyed by mounting signs the worst of the virus may be behind them.

Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Germany was “still a long way from being out of the woods,” as she allowed smaller shops from florists to fashion stores to reopen.

There were also encouraging signs in other major European countries such as Italy, France and Britain, although authorities warned citizens against letting their guard down.

Ghana became the first African country to lift its coronavirus restrictions, sparking a mixed reaction on streets in Accra teeming with citizens after a three-week lockdown.

“It is a huge reprieve. We have a listening government,” hawker Jemima Adwoa Anim told AFP.

“It was like a war situation. We had no money and at the same time couldn’t step out to work to earn some cash,” she added.

But others were furious the restrictions had been lifted so early.

“This is totally ridiculous. How is it possible?” asked 20-year-old student Francis Collison.

“We just recorded over 1,000 positive cases of COVID-19 and suddenly the president decided to lift the partial lockdown.”

    ‘Nobody wants to buy’

The fallout from the coronavirus has sparked fears of a second Great Depression with millions around the world losing their jobs as economies grind to a halt.

A devastating supply glut resulted in oil producers effectively paying others to take crude oil off their hands, as a barrel of US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for May delivery closed at -$37.63.

Futures prices rebounded back above zero in Asian trade Tuesday, but the historic moves sent shockwaves through global markets, sending the Dow Jones Index sharply lower and Asian markets into the red at the opening bell.

“It’s a contract for something that nobody wants to buy,” said Matt Smith of ClipperData, as oil storage facilities are full and demand has plunged due to fast-shrinking economic activity.

The virus has sent the aviation sector into a tailspin with cash-strapped Virgin Australia announcing Tuesday it had entered voluntary administration — the largest airline so far to collapse.

But despite the virus, people around the world are finding imaginative ways to pierce the gloom.

Police in Madrid are blaring their car sirens to celebrate birthdays of people stuck in their apartments.

And in Paris, Carla Bianchi, an actress of Italian origin, sings for her neighbours every night from her window, dedicating her songs to caregivers.

“It’s true that often Italian songs that are like serenades to be sung below the window work well,” she said.

“As time goes by, a small audience is growing. Even on the other side, from afar, so I see my voice travels.”

He added that a similar meeting would be held with leadership of the various transport unions in Metropolis to ensure that they encouraged their members to still practice social distancing by reducing the number of passengers they carried.

He further noted that the Metropolitan Security Council (MESEC) would also meet to strategize towards the strict implementation on the restrictions on mass gathering such as funerals, religious gatherings, weddings, parties, beach activities, among others.

According to him, with the euphoria surrounding the lifting of the lockdown, some residents may think that they could organize such events therefore the need to make the presence of the security felt in the communities to avoid such happenings.

He urged residents, corporate institutions, banks and the public to continue to strictly observe the acceptable protocols of handwashing, use of sanitizers, wearing of nose masks and most importantly social distancing.

Mr Yaw Akwah a Porter at the Ashaiman Cape-Coast main station told the GNA that, the business was very slow.

  • “Unless you have a feature with drake, the borders will remain closed” Ghanaians react to Sarkodie request on borders

The most decorated African rapper, Sarkodie has been criticized heavily for asking the president to open the borders for Ghanaians abroad to return home.

Sarkodie tweeted at the president commending him for a good job done in handling the coronavirus situation in Ghana and pleaded with him to open the borders for a day to enable Ghanaians abroad to return home.

This request from Sarkodie sparked rage in netizens since he is expected to know better on what needs to be done to help eradicate the virus rather than exposing people to the virus.

Most people believe that he made that request to bring home his friend Pappy Kojo who is currently stranded in Italy.

Ghana currently has 1042 confirmed cases, 9 deaths and 99 recoveries. Opening the borders will increase further spread of the virus, a twitter user said.

The Ketu South Municipal Assembly is “financially constrained” and needs government’s support to effectively fight and contain COVID-19 in the Municipality, Mr Elliot Edem Agbenorwu, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) has said.

He said the Assembly since the outbreak of the disease in Ghana, had committed financial resources for meetings with key stakeholders to map out strategies to prevent and contain the spread of the virus leading to the quarantine of some illegal travelers who entered the country through the frontiers of the Municipality.

Mr Agbenorwu at a consultative meeting at the Assembly to discuss the way forward in the virus fight said, the Assembly exhausted its finances on activities including; borderline patrol, logistics for the Military, accommodation and feeding for the quarantined, and provision of Veronica buckets with sanitary facilities for public places and some public institutions to fight the disease, thus needed assistance to sustain the fight.

“The Assembly is currently financially constrained and unable to continue to support or fund most of the activities. This is because the borders have been closed, markets closed and other revenue sources for the Municipal Assembly have been closed. The little Internally Generated Fund (IGM) we resourced to procure a deep well mechanised borehole for communities in Hatsukope and its environs have been used to support the fight against COVID-19.”

Checks by the Ghana News Agency show that so far, the Municipal Assembly has quarantined a total of 47 travelers (20 Ghanaians and 27 foreigners) with six of the samples testing positive to the disease necessitating their isolation and tracing of contacts.

Mr Agbenorwu said the Ketu South Municipal Hospital, one of the treatment centres in the Volta Region did some assessment required to make the place safe for use by COVID19 patients and health staff, and presented their budget “of which the Municipal Assembly is yet to provide the money.

“We therefore seek your assistance for the Ketu South to fight and contain this COVID-19 pandemic in the Municipality,” he appealed.

  • NHIS brouhaha: Striking health staff resume work

Striking Staff of Providence Medical Center a private health facility at Suhum in the Eastern Region have called off their strike action less than 24 hours after the commencement of the action over their eleven months unpaid salaries.

The workers are expected to resume work today Tuesday, April 21, 2020.

The decision to call off the strike was taken after a meeting with management on Monday assuring of payment of their salary arrears.

Private Health Providers in Ghana are on its knees over huge indebtedness by NHIS. In February this year, the Private Health Providers said, NHIS owes service providers between 9 (nine) to 14 (fourteen) months which covers arrears from 2018 for some providers and 2019 for others.

It described the situation as “unacceptable considering the fact that, the health sector is regarded as an essential service and a key component for socio-economic development.”

The Private Health Service Providers have on several times threatened to withdraw services to the Scheme to revert to cash and carry system.

Health workers at Providence Medical Center, a private health facility at Suhum began strike action on Monday, April 20, 2020, over eleven (11) months salary arrears.

Among the workers are Administrative staff, Nurses, Midwives, records staff, orderlies and security.

According to the aggrieved Staff, the Medical Director of the facility, Dr. Divine Apaloo has always hidden behind the indebtedness of NHIS to the facility as an excuse for his inability to pay staff.

They claim, NHIA recently paid four months of the arrears owed the facility but the Director instead of also clearing at least half of their salary arrears paid for just a month.

However, in a meeting on Monday, the Director of the Hospital, Dr. Divine Apaloo, explained to the striking staff that, the NHIS only paid two months of arrears to the facility which is woefully inadequate to settle their arrears considering the fact that the facility needs to restock.

He assured them of paying their salary arrears as soon as possible but Dr. Divine Apaloo is appealing to the National Health Insurance Authority to pay the arrears owed the facility.

  • Texts sent by Meghan and Harry to her father revealed in court papers

The Duchess of Sussex has revealed text messages she and Prince Harry sent to her father before their wedding, as part of legal action against the publisher of the Mail on Sunday.

Meghan claims Associated Newspapers misquoted the messages to paint the couple in a less good light.

She also claims tabloids, in particular those owned by the group, caused a dispute between her and her father.

Associated Newspapers says it will defend the privacy claim “with vigour”.

It comes as Meghan and Harry, who have relocated to California after stepping back as senior royals, told the UK’s tabloid press that they are ending all co-operation with them.

Meghan brought the legal action after a handwritten letter she sent to her father, Thomas Markle, was published in the Mail on Sunday.

She claims the letter was selectively edited by the paper to portray her “negatively”.

Court papers containing the text messages have been filed ahead of an expected hearing later this week.

The legal document claims they show the newspaper group edited the messages the Duke and Duchess of Sussex sent to Mr Markle before their wedding on 19 May 2018.

‘Meg and I are not angry’ It said that on 5 May 2018 Meghan wrote in a text to her father: “I’ve called and texted but haven’t heard back from you so hoping you’re okay”.

She then messaged her father the next day after finding out photographs of her father had been staged for a paparazzo photographer, the document said.

“She explains that she had attempted to arrange logistics and supplies for her father discretely and with privacy, with care taken not to feed the press, that she is trying to protect her father from heightened press intrusion and scrutiny and that he should keep a low profile until the wedding,” it says.

On 14 May 2018, it says, Mr Markle sent Meghan a text message to apologise and confirm that he would not be attending the wedding.

It says that around half an hour later, after several calls to Mr Markle went unanswered, Prince Harry sent the following messages to Mr Markle from Meghan’s phone:

“Tom, it’s Harry and I’m going to call you right now. Please pick up, thank you”

“Tom, Harry again! Really need to speak to u. U do not need to apologize, we understand the circumstances but “going public” will only make the situation worse. If u love Meg and want to make it right please call me as there are two other options which don’t involve u having to speak to the media, who incidentally created this whole situation. So please call me so I can explain. Meg and I are not angry, we just need to speak to u. Thanks”

“Oh any speaking to the press WILL backfire, trust me Tom. Only we can help u, as we have been trying from day 1”.

The legal document claimed the newspaper’s summary of these messages contained “significant omissions” when it “merely” reported that the messages said “Mr Markle did not need to apologise and that he should call”.

It adds the description of another exchange “intentionally omits” any reference to Meghan or Prince Harry attempting to protect Mr Markle and ensure that he was safe.

The document also states that the UK tabloid media, particularly Associated Newspapers, harassed, humiliated and manipulated Mr Markle.

Meghan alleges the newspaper group caused the very “dispute” which they claim justified the publication of the letter and also caused “substantial damage” to their relationship.

She accuses the paper of misusing her private information, breaching copyright and selective editing when it published the private letter to her father.

The Mail on Sunday has said there was “huge and legitimate” public interest in publishing the letter.

The paper argues that members of the Royal Family, including the Duchess of Sussex, “rely on publicity about themselves and their lives in order to maintain the privileged positions they hold and promote themselves”.

It claims Meghan “did not have a reasonable expectation of privacy that the contents of the letter were private and would remain so”.

As evidence that it did not infringe her privacy, the paper said the letter was “immaculately copied” in Meghan’s “elaborate handwriting”, arguing that this care in its presentation meant she anticipated it would be seen and read by a wider audience.

  • Coronavirus: Immigration to US to be suspended amid pandemic – Trump

President Donald Trump has said he will sign an executive order to temporarily suspend all immigration to the US because of the coronavirus.

In a late night message on Twitter, he cited “the attack from the invisible enemy”, as he calls the virus, and “the need to protect the jobs” of Americans.

He gave no other details. Critics say the Trump administration is using the pandemic to crack down on immigration.

The country has 782,159 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 41,816 deaths.

Mr Trump’s announcement comes as the White House also argues the worst of the pandemic is over and the country can begin reopening.

The US has already agreed with both Canada and Mexico to extend border restrictions on non-essential travel until at least mid-May.

Travel has also been sharply restricted from Europe and China, though people with temporary work visas, students and business travellers are exempted.

  • US oil prices turn negative as demand dries up

The price of US oil has turned negative for the first time in history.

That means oil producers are paying buyers to take the commodity off their hands over fears that storage capacity could run out in May.

Demand for oil has all but dried up as lockdowns across the world have kept people inside.

As a result, oil firms have resorted to renting tankers to store the surplus supply and that has forced the price of US oil into negative territory.

The price of a barrel of West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the benchmark for US oil, fell as low as minus $37.63 a barrel.

“This is off-the-charts wacky,” said Stewart Glickman, an energy equity analyst at CFRA Research. “The demand shock was so massive that it’s overwhelmed anything that people could have expected.”

The severe drop on Monday was driven in part by a technicality of the global oil market. Oil is traded on its future price and May futures contracts are due to expire on Tuesday. Traders were keen to offload those holdings to avoid having to take delivery of the oil and incur storage costs.

June prices for WTI were also down, but trading at above $20 per barrel. Meanwhile, Brent Crude – the benchmark used by Europe and the rest of the world, which is already trading based on June contracts – was also weaker, down 8.9% at less than $26 a barrel.

Mr Glickman said the historic reversal in pricing was a reminder of the strains facing the oil market and warned that June prices could also fall, if lockdowns remain in place. “I’m really not optimistic about the prospects for oil companies or oil prices,” he said.

OGUK, the business lobby for the UK’s offshore oil and gas sector, said the negative price of US oil would affect firms operating in the North Sea.

“The dynamics of this US market are different from those directly driving UK produced Brent but we will not escape the impact,” said OGUK boss Deirdre Michie.

“Ours is not just a trading market; every penny lost spells more uncertainty over jobs,” she said.

The oil industry has been struggling with both tumbling demand and in-fighting among producers about reducing output.

Earlier this month, Opec members and its allies finally agreed a record deal to slash global output by about 10%. The deal was the largest cut in oil production ever to have been agreed.

But many analysts say the cuts were not big enough to make a difference.

“It hasn’t taken long for the market to recognise that the Opec+ deal will not, in its present form, be enough to balance oil markets,” said Stephen Innes, chief global market strategist at Axicorp.

  • Delay melts hearts with ‘bad girl’ picture on social media

Ghanaian TV show host, Deloris Frimpong Manso is making the eyes of her followers pop out with a seductive photo she posted on her Instagram page.

The photo, which has Delay slighting flaunting her ‘melons’ comes with a caption that is interestingly confusing.

The Delay Show host claims that she is unable to decide if she is a bad girl wrapped in the skin of a good girl or the other way round.

Delay, however, comes to the end of the post to write that her inability to decide on either of the two helps her to confidently say she is a woman now.

  • Air pollution linked to raised COVID-19 death risk

High levels of air pollution could raise the risk of dying from COVID-19, two studies suggest.

Dr. Maria Neira, of the World Health Organization (WHO), told BBC News countries with high pollution levels, many in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, should ramp up their preparations.

Those with underlying pollution-related conditions have developed severe COVID-19 in countries with high levels.

But medical professionals say it is too early to prove a direct relationship.

“We will be doing a map of most polluted cities based on our database to support national authorities in these regions so that they can prepare their epidemic response plan accordingly,” Dr Neira said.

A US study suggests Covid-19 death rates rise by about 15% in areas with even a small increase in fine-particle pollution levels in the years before the pandemic.

“Patterns in Covid-19 death rates generally mimic patterns in both high population density and high [particulate matter] PM2.5 exposure areas,” the Harvard University report says.

These particles, one-30th the diameter of a human hair, have previously been linked to health issues including respiratory infections and lung cancer.

The Harvard study has not yet been peer-reviewed but Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich Chair of epidemiology Air pollution linked to raised COVID-19 death riskProf Annette Peters told BBC News its findings “are in line with earlier reports on hospitalization and mortality due to pneumonia”.

“It is one of the first studies substantiating our suspicion and the hypothesis that severity of the COVID-19 infection may be augmented by particulate matter air pollution,” she said.

Report author Prof Francesca Dominici said: “We hope it will help stop the air quality from getting worse, particularly when we are hearing about authorities trying to relax pollution rules amid this pandemic.”

Another study, at the University of Siena, in Italy, and Arhus University, in Denmark, suggests a possible link between high levels of air pollution and COVID-19 deaths in northern Italy.

The Lombardy and Emilia Romagna regions had death rates of about 12%, compared with 4.5% in the rest of Italy.

The study, published in Science Direct, says: “The high level of pollution in northern Italy should be considered an additional co-factor of the high level of lethality recorded in that area.”

Population, age, differing health systems, and a variation in prevention policies across regions should also be taken into account.

  • Idris Elba: ‘Food will run out if farmers can’t farm’

Actor Idris Elba has called on world leaders to ensure that an international food shortage crisis does not follow in the wake of the COVID-19 virus.

The actor, in his role as UN ambassador, helped to launch its $40m (£32,2m) International Fund for Agricultural Development on Monday.

The fund is intended to help support farmers and food producers in rural areas globally during the pandemic.

“It is about food,” the Luther star told BBC News.

“It is about the basic necessity for human beings, and that will run out if the farmers can’t farm

Idris, and his wife, model and fellow activist Sabrina Dhowre Elba, have been quarantined in their London home since last month, having tested positive for coronavirus.

They only suffered mild cases but said they were still “humbled to be alive” following the unsettling experience, which inspired them to begin the fund.

‘No man is an island’ The couple now hope to lobby governments to raise $200m (£161m) more to help agricultural workers in poorer parts of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, who might well be hit harder by the virus financially and in terms of healthcare.

Elba, whose parents hail from Sierra Leone and Ghana, also noted how the effects of such a decline in international farming could have a knock-on effect on food availability and standards in the UK.

“What we’ve learnt from Covid is that no man is an island,” he said.

“We’re all part of this world, so if we can help each other [with] forward-thinking – that’s going to save a lot of lives and some livelihoods.”

Dhowre Elba warned that world officials need to “start thinking past the health crisis” and on to the potentially looming financial one, which she said could send “half a billion people” into poverty.

“There’s going to be a lot of people who are going to be suffering from the economic fallout,” she added.

“With Ebola, more people actually died from the economic aftermath than the actual disease itself.”

In a separate interview, her husband told AP: “I think that the world should take a week of quarantine every year just to remember this time. Remember each other. I really do.”
