  • COVID-19: Reduce fuel prices or we increase fares Drivers

Members of the National Concerned Drivers Association have threatened to increase transportation fares by the end of this week if the government does not reduce the price of fuel at the pumps with immediate effect.

The association said its members have obeyed President Akufo-Addo’s directives of reducing the number of passengers in their trotros and taxis as a measure to ensure social-distancing in commercial vehicles in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The drivers noted that they expected fuel prices to have been reduced by now, taking into consideration the sharp decline of crude oil in the international market due to the coronavirus where a lot of countries are in a lockdown reducing the demand for oil drastically.

“We have noticed that the government does not have drivers at heart and is unconcerned when it comes to matters of improving the lives of drivers. We’re therefore giving government up the end of this week, thus from now to 27th of April to reduce fuel prices or we will increase our fares,” the angry drivers said in a statement.

The Association has also called on its mother body, the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), to also discuss with car owners to reduce the daily sales for drivers so that they can also maintain and reduce the number of passengers as the President’s directives states.

  • Coronavirus second wave may be even worse – US health chief

A second wave of the novel coronavirus in the US could be even more destructive because it will likely collide with the beginning of flu season, one of the country’s top health officials said Tuesday.

Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), called on Americans to use the coming months to prepare and get their flu shots.

“There’s a possibility that the assault of the virus on our nation next winter will actually be even more difficult than the one we just went through,” he was quoted as saying in an interview with the Washington Post published late Tuesday.

“We’re going to have the flu epidemic and the coronavirus epidemic at the same time,” he said.

The US has recorded more than 800,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University, with 44,845 deaths; the most reported of any country.

Billions of people around the world have been ordered to stay at home in recent months as governments try to prevent the highly contagious coronavirus from overwhelming healthcare systems.

The US, like other countries, has scrambled to secure enough ventilators and personal protection equipment for medical staff while the death toll mounts.

Redfield said the virus arrived in the US just as regular flu season, which itself can strain healthcare systems was waning.

If the two diseases had peaked at the same time, he told the Post, “it could have been really, really, really, really difficult” for health systems to cope.

Getting a flu shot ahead of next flu season, he said, “may allow there to be a hospital bed available for your mother or grandmother that may get coronavirus”.

  • Ghana tops Africa’s ranking for Coronavirus testing

Ghana has since its first two recorded cases of COVID-19 infections, had traced a total of 86,000 contacts, out of which the test results of 68,591 had been received.

Out of the number 1,042 persons, representing 1.5 per cent have been confirmed positive, with 67,549 (89.5 per cent), testing negative, and 99 persons have so far recovered and discharged.

There is, however, a backlog of about 18,000 persons whose test results are yet to be received.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo gave the statistics in his seventh COVID-19 Presidential address on the country’s interventions against the fight of the pandemic.

He said Ghana was the only other country in Africa to have conducted more than 60,000 tests, and “we are ranked number one in Africa in administering of tests per million people”.

The overwhelming majority of those contacts, he explained, had been established in the last three weeks of the partial lockdown in Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi.

President Akufo-Addo further indicated that 930 persons who had been isolated were responding to treatment either in their homes or in treatment facilities, and they would later undergo the mandatory two tests to determine if they had also recovered from the virus or otherwise.

He attributed the increase in the number of positive cases over the last three weeks to health authorities’ aggressive tracing and testing of all contacts of infected persons.

That, he said, had enabled the authorities to identify and isolate infected persons, protect the population from further infections, and contain the spread of the virus.

The President stated that the decision by the Government to impose restrictions on movement was backed by data at hand, and that its next course of action, again, was backed by the statistics available as well as science.

“Indeed all that the Government is doing is intended to achieve five key objectives – limit and stop the importation of the virus; contain its spread; provide adequate care for the sick; limit the impact of the virus on social and economic life; and inspire the expansion of our domestic capability and deepen our self-reliance,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo thanked the entire population for their immense support and patience despite the hardships during the three-week partial lockdown of some hotspots of the country.

He, however, urged the public not to be complacent about the country’s efforts and achievements so far in containing the community spread saying the numbers of confirmed cases would still go up due to the effective contact tracing.

The President encouraged the public to continue to adhere to all the safety and hygiene protocols, especially maintaining social distancing of at least two meters, regular handwashing with soap under running water, or use of alcohol-based hand sanitiser, having good nutrition, exercising and avoiding stress.

He said the country’s success to defeat the virus depended on the responsible actions people would take to save themselves and others.

  • Coronavirus: Johnson speaks to Trump as recovery continues

Boris Johnson has spoken on the phone to US President Donald Trump, as his recovery from coronavirus continues.

The prime minister, who is recuperating at his official country residence, is also expected to speak to the Queen by phone this week.

Downing Street said Mr. Johnson is currently not doing any formal government work but is receiving updates from senior colleagues.

No 10 said he had thanked Mr. Trump for his good wishes whilst he was unwell.

A spokesperson added the pair had discussed UK-US cooperation in the fight against the virus and agreed on the importance of a “coordinated international response”.

Earlier No 10 said Mr. Johnson has spoken to Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who has been deputising for him for the past two weeks, and “senior members of his team”.

Downing Street also said Mr Johnson – who spent nearly a week in the hospital and three nights in intensive care – was “continuing his recovery” at Chequers, his country retreat in Buckinghamshire.

After he was discharged from hospital on 12 April, Mr Johnson – who received oxygen treatment to help his breathing during his stay – praised NHS staff, saying it “could have gone either way”.

His fiancée Carrie Symonds, who is expecting their first child, said she had been through some “very dark times”.

The prime minister is not performing any official engagements at the moment and Mr Raab is expected to stand in for him at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday – the first since the Easter recess.

The PM last chaired the government’s daily virus briefing on 26 March, testing positive for the virus later that evening.

The PM’s anticipated phone conversation with the Queen would be the first for three weeks, No 10 said. Their traditional weekly face-to-face meeting has not taken place since early last month.

The Queen, who celebrated her 94th birthday on Tuesday, is currently in residence at Windsor Castle, having moved there from Buckingham Palace in the middle of March.

  • COVID-19: Persons without face mask prevented from entering Accra City Hall

Over 50 persons were on Tuesday denied entry into the Accra City Hall for not wearing a face mask as part of measures to stop the spread of the Coronavirus.

The measure forms part of efforts to safeguard the health and well-being of staff of the assembly as well as other visitors into its premises.

According to the Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah who gave the directive, as long as one could get a cloth to cover his or her face and mouth, they would be allowed entry into the city hall.

He added that these measures would help slow the spread of the Coronavirus especially from people who may have the virus but do not know.

He noted that henceforth everyone coming into the city centre would be required to wear a face mask as directed by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The Assembly last week launched a campaign to promote the wearing of a face mask in the city.

  • Spurs stars Aurier, Sissoko flout social distancing advice

Tottenham will speak to Serge Aurier and Moussa Sissoko after the Premier League stars flouted government guidelines on social distancing during the coronavirus.

Ivory Coast defender Aurier posted a video of himself training with Tottenham team-mate Sissoko on Instagram on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old, who was wearing a mask, has since deleted the videos, which showed him running shuttles and sitting next to France midfielder Sissoko, disregarding the current social distancing advice.

Aurier and Sissoko are the latest high-profile figures at Tottenham to ignore the guidelines while Britain is on lockdown due to the pandemic.

Just two weeks ago, Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho was pictured holding a one-on-one training session in north London with French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.

Mourinho was forced to admit his mistake, saying his “actions were not in line with government protocol”.

On the same day, Tottenham duo Ryan Sessegnon and Davison Sanchez were filmed running side-by-side, while Aurier has also posted a separate video of him running with a friend.

Government guidelines say you can only exercise outdoors on your own or with members of the same household.

“We shall be speaking to both players involved,” a Tottenham spokesman said.

  • Mexico raises health emergency level as virus cases mount

Mexico raised its health emergency level following a rapid increase in novel coronavirus cases and fears the health system could collapse, the government said on Tuesday.

Health Undersecretary Hugo Lopez-Gatell said the country was moving to “phase three” of its response to the deadly pandemic after noting that “we’re in a phase of rapid increase, where we’re accumulating a large number of infections (and) hospital admissions.”

The government has suspended all non-essential economic activity until May 30 and asked people to stay at home and observe social distancing, although it has not enforced a mandatory quarantine.

By Monday, Mexico had recorded close to 8,800 cases and 712 deaths from COVID-19. The government expects the peak of infections to hit between May 8 and 10.

Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has been widely criticized for his response to the pandemic, taking much longer than other countries in the region to impose containment measures.

Last month, Human Rights Watch accused Lopez Obrador of setting a “profoundly dangerous example that threatens Mexicans’ health” by flouting social distancing guidelines and continuing to hold rallies and greet supporters with handshakes and hugs.

“This epidemic is accelerating, which means there is an increasing number of cases every day and that also applies to geographical spread,” said Lopez-Gatell, who accompanied Lopez Obrador at the president’s daily press briefing.

Areas that keep down the spread of the coronavirus will be allowed to lift social distancing measures on May 17, the health ministry said.

  • GEPA eyes export boom post coronavirus

The Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) is anticipating an export boom post COVID-19, and is therefore stocking its website with export educational materials aimed at training interested persons to understand the nuances of export.

According to the authority, the lockdown provides it with a great opportunity to empower many people who would want to take on export as a career or infuse export into their business operation models.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GEPA, Dr. Afua Asabea Asare, told the B&FT in an interview that after COVID-19 every country will have an equal export opportunity, and the authority is not only ready to assist Ghanaian businesses but also empower them to engage in export activities.

According to her, incentives from government are being channelled through the stimulus package for critical industries to produce essentials items to fight the virus. For her, these products and services will be equally needed by the international market post COVID-19, and local business must be ready to export.

She added that GEPA is hoping to build capacity of the youth to pick export as a career and offer assistance to Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) who would need help in exporting their products post COVID-19.

“What this lockdown has shown us is the power of online learning. We are looking at how we can put some energy into our online school. We have the export school, and even before the coronavirus came we were looking at how we could push some of our learning online. We hope the youth can tap into these online programmes for beginners and help to build a bunch of young ones who will be interested in building a career in export,” Dr. Asare said.

“This is also an opportunity to sharpen the skills of persons who are already in the export business as well, and open their knowledge base on how to use modern technology to ease their work. We want export to be interesting and attractive to the youth as well as the adult population.”

She is hopeful that post COVID-19 the economy will see a boom in entrepreneurship, as many opportunities will avail themselves especially in the agriculture sector.

GEPA, she noted, has already put in place some measures to increase its market share on the export market and attract foreign exchange into the country. It is currently supporting non-traditional commodities such as cashew, pineapple, okra, mango, vegetables, shea butter, chilli-pepper, yam and general agricultural produce for export.

Dr. Asare believes post COVID-19 provides a great opportunity to achieve its strategies. “After COVID-19, we want to take the world by storm; we want to increase our export earnings and change the nature of our economy. This is the best time to do it.

“The whole world is under lockdown, and after this storm everyone anywhere will have the same opportunity to enter the international market; we want to make our people ready, and now is the time to empower them. We are putting a lot of programmes online; there are many platforms that we can tap from,” she intimated.

  • Maamobi hospital staff fight supervisor for selling PPE to them

Medical staff at the Maamobi General Hospital are angry at their supervisor for selling Personal Protective Equipment to them.

Health workers at the facility can only access the PPE after paying 5 cedis in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The facility has recorded COVID-19 cases with some health workers falling victims as well.

Speaking to Starr News, a midwife at the hospital disclosed that the supervisor has procured the PPE following lack of supply from the Central government which is being sold to the staff.

The workers want the internally generated funds to rather be used in providing the PPE at no fee to them.

“I cannot imagine a whole medical supervisor at the hospital selling us PPEs…she is selling to us at 5 cedis. We expected that even if she has taken from somewhere she can give to us and take it from the IGF.

“The work I am doing is for the government and myself and so why would I buy my own PPE to work,” a midwife at the hospital told Starr News.

•In any event that printed fabric is used, the layer of the fabric in direct contact with the face should be plain fabric that is free from chemicals.

    Fabric/Material Combinations
To be effective, face masks generally must be able to filter out particles and still be easy to breathe through. In the absence of propylene, which is the common material used for medical grade face masks, 100% cotton or cotton blends possess good material characteristics for homemade face masks. Recent studies/evaluations undertaken by the FDA on viable materials for the production of effective homemade face masks from local fabrics/materials established the following:

    1. Calico-Stiff (Hard/Medium)-Calico (three layers) combination is ideal for reusable homemade COVID-19 face mask.

    2. Calico-Calico-Calico (three layers) combination is ideal for reusable homemade COVID-19 face mask.

    Cleaning of Homemade Face Masks
Reusable homemade face masks should be properly washed before reuse. Used homemade face masks must first be disinfected; then washed with soap or detergent until clean, rinsed under running water; dried in the open sun, and ironed before reuse.

They should be routinely washed depending on the frequency of use or when saturated from condensation build-up from breathing, or after a contamination event.

**Provide identification tags on the face masks, including the FDA Registration Number

  • Drinking spots and game centers to be closed in Bolga

The Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly in the Upper East Region, is targeting to close down drinking spots and game centers to avoid communal drinking and gathering to suppress the spread of COVID 19.

Information reaching the Ghana News Agency (GNA), in Bolgatanga from a source close to the Assembly said in spite of the constant reminders of residents to take steps to avoid the spread of the virus, drinking spots have become safe haven for meetings over bottles.

The region has recorded eight cases of the COVID-19 and one death with majority of the cases coming from the Bolgatanga Municipality, hence, the urgency in the need to take steps to close some key crowd gathering activities, including closure of markets on market days and complete or partial closure of drinking spots in the Municipality.

The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Joseph Amiyuure, who confirmed the possible closure of drinking spots and game centers in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, explained that these spots were areas people gathered mostly at night to drink, engage in other activities and did not observe social distancing.

He added that game centers would also be closed down to ensure that the residents respected the social distancing advise given by the President and other health experts to check the spread of the virus.

Mr Amiyuure who has been commended by sections of the media for taking such bold decisions to safe residents in the Municipality, said he would meet the COVID-19 Enforcement Committee on Monday and instruct them to enforce the decision as quickly as possible, adding that, the Assembly would adopt and enforce every decision that would contribute to slow the spread of the disease.

He indicated that closeness from crowding, blatant refusal by some residents to observe directives on social distancing and individuals unwillingness to stay at home “even though they may have no business to do in town are some of the worrying incidents that the Assembly is confronted with”.

The Chief Executive expressed gratitude to traders in the region and those coming from neighbouring regions, especially for their understanding on the decision taken by the Assembly to close the markets on market days for trading.

He commended the COVID-19 Enforcement Committee for a good work done through the enforcement and engagements with traders and congratulated the media for its role in educating the members of the public on the disease, as well as the security agencies for their cooperation.

The MCE said he would be meeting the COVID-19 Committee to brief them on the enforcement of the new decision to ensure the safety of residents.

He spoke against stigmatisation of people living with the disease and their families and urged residents to avoid such negative attitudes.

“Such persons and their families need attention and consolations from community members in these crucial times”, he added.

  • ‘Ghana is lucky to have you as President at this time’ Council of State to Akufo-Addo

“It may be that you have come to the country at such a time like this. We are lucky, as a country, to have you as President at such a time as this. Your quote has been the quote of the year 2020, that you can bring the economy back to life but you cannot bring human beings back to life. Very prophetic and very insightful. Mr. President, we congratulate you on these.”

These were the words of the Chairperson of the Council of State, Nana Otuo Sriboe II, on Tuesday, 21st April, 2020, when the Council of State, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, held discussions with the President on the measures being taken by Government to combat the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Congratulating the President on “the very able manner in which you have handled the crisis that has beset this country with the advent of COVID-19”, the Council of State Chairperson added that “your regular broadcasts have really brought a lot of encouragement to the country, and, as if by design or accident, the cloth that you have been wearing has been depicting the mood of the country at that time.”

Expressing the delight of the Council of State at the establishment of the COVID-19 National Trust Fund, Nana Otuo Sriboe II suggested the decentralization of the collection of funds, “so that somebody in an outlandish part of the country can also contribute perhaps through the DCE or the MCE so that his name too will be in the annals of those who came up to support the nation in times of crisis.”

With the Council of State having made a donation of 300,000 examination gloves, a sizeable quantity of surgical masks, and other equipment, the Council of State Chair commended the efforts being made by the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, and all other frontline actors in the struggle.

“I think the fact of the members of the Council of State adorning face masks is an indication that face masks have become a part of the regime of the combat against the virus. We have to accept that this will also mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 and as much as we appreciate the integrity and the good intentions of the trustees of the COVID trust fund, we may make a small suggestion in effect if we could go out there to have the facemask sewn in millions so that every Ghanaian will have the privilege of donning a face mask,” he said.

Nana Otuo Sriboe II continued, “They will be for free, but others may take it and put in a token gesture of some amount as their part of the effort to prevent COVID. I think this will be a better substitute than giving food which may not be going to the intended destination and even negates the principles of social distancing, because if you have face masks and you get closer, distributing the face masks will go a long way to fight the spread.”

  • Central Region records 6 more COVID-19 cases

Six more persons have tested positive for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the Central Region as at Tuesday, April 21, the Regional Directorate of Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed.

This brings to eight, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the region, which had only one confirmed case and another from Accra being managed in a facility in the region, before the new cases this week.

Deputy Regional Director in charge of Public Health Dr. Kwabena Sarpong, who stated this, said the patients were contacts of confirmed cases.

The GNA reports that five of the patients, who were not showing any signs and symptoms, are being managed in their respective homes with others receiving treatment at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH).

According to Dr Sarpong, a total of 107 new suspected cases were recorded as at Sunday, April 19, bringing the cumulative suspected cases from routine enhanced surveillance and returnees to 561 and their specimen had been taken to Nugochi for testing.

He said 238 of the specimen had come out negative with 318 samples pending, while 240 persons had completed their 14-day quarantine period.

Dr Sarpong said an additional 178 contacts were being traced making it a total of 783 individuals being traced for specimen collection through enhanced surveillance with the support of security agencies.

He added that 148 returnees were under mandatory quarantine for 14 days in a safe and secured location.

  • AMA denied over 50 people entry due to lack of masks

Over 50 persons were on Tuesday denied entry into the Accra City Hall for not wearing a nose mask.

The measure forms part of efforts to safeguard the health and well-being of staff of the assembly as well as other visitors into its premises.

According to Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah who gave the directive, as long as one could get a cloth to cover their nose and mouth they would be allowed entry into the city hall adding that these measures would help slow the spread of the virus especially from people who may have the virus and do not know.

He noted that henceforth everyone coming into the city centre was required to wear a nose mask as directed by the President.

The Assembly last week launched a campaign to promote the wearing of a nose mask in the city.

The Accra City Hall which is being managed by Listening Bureau, a property management company is disability-friendly and can boast of ancillary facilities such as a 300-capacity conference room, meeting rooms, cafeteria, landscaping (greening) and a 200-capacity car park.

  • Government unable to explain why GHS site reports 1,042 COVID-19 cases from April 13

Deputy Minister for Information Pius Hadzide was unable to explain why the Ghana Health Service’s official site for COVID-19 updates reported 1,042 cases on their graph from April 13.

A former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa in an interview with Citi TV said the government of Ghana is massaging the figures of the COVID-19 cases recorded.

According to Prof. Akosa, looking at the graph on the website shows that the case count went up to 1,042 as of April 13 but government did not report.

“Let me say that surprisingly you go to the Ghana Health Service website and you will realise that on the 13th of April that had been the number that was positive but somehow that number only came out when the President addressed us on Sunday.”

He stated that the figures are being managed in a manner that is suitable for the government.

“So in a sense, I am seeing that the results are probably are coming in but the results are being managed in a manner that might look suitable because on the 13th that 1,042 came out and it was immediately removed but interestingly yesterday the 1,042 came out but if you go and look, their graph tells me that was the number we attained on the 13th of April. These are the issues that worry some of us why we could not hold on and make sure we could zone the country and testing centres, currently you moving samples from Upper West to Kumasi why?…”

Responding to the alleged management of the figures and the capacity of the various testing facilities, Pius Hadzide said he cannot state the capacity of the centres testing for Covid-19.

“We do know the facilities that are testing, Noguchi and KCCR not just these, Korle Bu is also testing and so on we can find these details from the various institutions.”

Pius Hadzide explained how the figures are aggregated and validated.

“The figures emanate from the various testing centres, what happens is that these test results are conducted at these centres and the results are transmitted to the Ghana Health Service’s surveillance division and the directorate at the service aggregate all these figures and communicate same either through their website or they send the information to the central government, the Ministry of Information or the Presidency so we do not generate the figures, we barely communicate the figures as validated and transmitted by the Ghana Health Service.”

He said he is scandalised by the comment of Prof Akosa and described his statement at the unfortunate.

“I am particularly scandalized hearing that the man of the standing of Professor Akosa allegedly will make those comments, accusing the government of managing the figures without providing any quota of evidence I think… below the belt and it is unfortunate.”

On issues of why the graph shows 1,042, Pius Hadzide was not able to explain why it is so and said even if that happens the Professor should have consulted the Ghana Health Service and not accuse the government of massaging the figures.

“You cannot use that to accuse the central government of managing the figures you will have to interrogate this with the people who aggregate the data and validate it…”

  • My constituents insult me because of poor road network MP confesses

Member of Parliament for Asane Akroso Manso in the Eastern region, George Kwame Aboagye has revealed how he has been subjected to severe verbal attacks by his constituents due to the poor road network there.

But he understands their plight because he believes the people deserve better.

“Even my family members have not been spared of these insults but I have urged them to remain calm since I owe the constituents the responsibility to get the roads fixed by lobbying through the Ministry of Roads and Highways,” he said.

The MP who is popularly known as Oluwa was quick to add that the move by the people demonstrates their desire for results, and not necessarily that they dislike him.

George Kwame Aboagye revealed this in an interview with Nana Yaw Opare (Wofa) host of Mantam Mpuntuo show on Onua FM, admitting that most of the road networks in the area are dilapidated.

The situation, he said, has negatively affected the livelihood, health and well-being of people there for years.

Touching on what he has done so far concerning the situation, the legislator revealed that about 80% of roads in the area have been awarded and contractors are currently on location.

For instance, he noted, together with the Asane Manso Akroso District Chief Executive Alex Inkoom, George Kwame Aboagye on April 21 cut sod for the construction of a 19.5 kilometers from Akyem Manso to Osenase under the cocoa roads project.

He said the project is a fulfillment of a campaign promise made by President Akufo-Addo during the 2016 elections campaign.

He was optimistic the contractors will complete the project before end of this year to enhance economic activities.

George Kwame Aboagye assured residents of Asane Akroso Manso that the Akufo-Addo-led administration will not disappoint them.

  • Coronavirus: There’s no ‘false positive’ case in Ghana – GHS Director-General debunks claims

Ghana has recorded 1042 positive cases of COVID-19 and 99 recovery cases. More than 60,000 people whose samples were collected through contact tracing and other enhanced testing approaches have tested negative for the virus.

However, rumourmongers have cast doubts over the number of positive cases, saying the samples of some of the people who have tested positive might not be the actual case. The claim is that there might be “false positve” cases.

Addressing the issue, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye debunked the claims that there may be persons mistakenly testing positive for Coronavirus in the country.

Although admitting the possibility of “false” positive cases when conducting a test, Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye explained that the Health Service uses the global Polymerise Chain Reaction (PCR) test to check for the presence of the virus in the samples.

The PCR test is a method used to detect viral genetic material called RNA or antigen to tell whether or not someone has the virus. This testing technique is used globally to check the presence of COVID-19.

The GHS Director-General wants Ghanaians to know that the research centers in charge of testing samples for the virus are using this standard method and there is no way any result could be faulty.

“It detects the virus to locate where the virus is. What they are doing is very specific for COVID-19. So, if you use some rapid test to check your antibody meaning your body producing something when you become exposed, that is what can give you false positive. But for what we’re doing, I can assure that, short of maybe a missing report; I won’t say false positive is a problem’,’ he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ program.

  • Messi: I would give up Barcelona title for World Cup glory

Coming off a Liga and Copa del Rey double, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is desperate to taste success with Argentina in Russia this summer

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has said he would swap a Barcelona title for a trophy with the national team ahead of the World Cup in Russia.

Messi has enjoyed a trophy-laden career at Barca, however, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is still searching for his first major senior title with Argentina.

The 30-year-old was involved as Argentina lost the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil, while Messi could not prevent back-to-back defeats in the 2015 and 2016 Copa America deciders.

Coming off a Liga and Copa del Rey double, which took his trophy tally to 32 at Camp Nou, Messi is desperate to taste success with Jorge Sampaoli’s men.

“I would change a Barcelona title for one with the national team,” Messi told Argentinean TV channel El Trece.

“Winning a title with Argentina would be something unique.”

Argentina will face Iceland (June 16), Croatia (June 21) and Nigeria (June 26) in Group D at the World Cup, starting next month.

The two-time world champions who last won the showpiece event in 1986 scraped into the tournament thanks to Messi’s magic.

And Messi conceded Argentina are below the likes of Brazil, Spain and reigning champions Germany.

“But we do not have to throw the message of ‘we are going to be the world champion because we are the best’, because the reality is that it is not like that.”

On Group D, Messi added: “Iceland are a team that showed in the last European Championship that they are difficult for anyone.

“Croatia have a midfield that plays very well, it is a style like Spain but one level below, and Nigeria always challenge us.”

  • UK has funneled 6 billion pounds to small firms via coronavirus grants – Ministry

Small companies in Britain have received 6.1 billion pounds of a total 12 billion pounds available in emergency grants to help them withstand the coronavirus crisis, a finance ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.

Nearly 500,000 companies have so far received grants which are worth either 10,000 pounds or 25,000 pounds and do not have to be repaid to the government.

The grant plan was announced last month as part of a string of measures rushed out by finance minister Rishi Sunak.

He has faced criticism that too few loans have been made to small firms as part of a 330 billion-pound program of state-backed credit.

Sunak said on Monday that banks had approved 12,000 loans under the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme, up from just over 6,000 as of April 14.

The government has also pledged to pay 80% of the salaries of workers who are temporarily laid off among other measures.

  • 3-year-old toddler beats coronavirus

A 3-year-old toddler in Turkey has beaten the novel coronavirus.

He was discharged from hospital on Tuesday in the southern province of Hatay after 15 days of treatment.

He was admitted to Hatay Mustafa Kemal Research and Training University Hospital with symptoms of high fever and cough.

Dr. Cigdem El at the Department of Child Health and Diseases told Anadolu Agency: “Turkey is an example to the world with its measures and research in efforts to stem COVID-19.”

El, without disclosing the identity of the survivor, said the toddler “initially had respiratory problems”.

“Our young patient initially had respiratory problems. He was in need of a ventilator for three days but responded to our treatments very quickly,” said El.

She further added that the family members of the young patient tested negative for coronavirus.

The hospital will continue monitoring the child for four weeks, said El.

Meanwhile, the family was overjoyed to meet their child for the first time after 15 days of treatment.

“We were deeply saddened after his COVID-19 tests came out as positive. Thankfully, our child is now healthy. We have also received training on measures to take [against the virus],” said the toddler’s father.

Turkey has so far registered nearly 91,000 Coronavirus cases whereas the death toll is currently 2,100. More than 13,400 people have fully recovered from the disease, and 1,909 people are receiving treatment at intensive care units.

The virus has spread to at least 185 countries and regions since emerging in Wuhan, China last December, with the U.S. and Europe now the hardest-hit areas.

More than 2.47 million cases have been reported worldwide, with the death toll over 170,300 and more than 652,000 recoveries, according to data compiled by the U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University.

  • Czechs to test 27,000 people to gauge coronavirus antibodies

The Czech Republic will test 27,000 people for coronavirus antibodies to gain information on how many came into contact with the infection, officials said on Tuesday.

The study, wider than others made in European countries and the United States in recent weeks, will start on Wednesday and involve all age groups.

Four regions were picked, from areas that were little affected by the virus to ones highly affected, Institute of Health Information and Statistics Director Ladislav Dusek said.

Results, expected in early May, should give the government a clearer view of how many asymptomatic cases there may have been and help decision-making on further steps.

“For us, this study will be an important lead. The higher the rate the more positive the situation will be in this respect,” Health Minister Adam Vojtech told a news conference.

The pandemic has been less severe in the Czech Republic, a country of 10.7 million, than most west European countries after the early adoption of strict measures such as shop and school closures, a ban on most foreign travel and the mandatory use of face masks in public.

The government has been under pressure to accelerate easing the measures.

Unlike tests to identify current infections, the study will use rapid tests for antibodies, which show whether people have been infected in the past. People who test positive will be offered a swab test to find out whether they are still carrying the virus.

Deputy Health Minister Roman Prymula said he expected the study to show the percentage of the population carrying antibodies to be in single digits. That would mean the country has not reached widespread “herd immunity”.

The Czech Republic has reported 6,914 cases and 196 deaths. It has done 178,617 tests.

A study of 863 Los Angeles County residents in the United States showed 4.1% of adults tested positive for antibodies, suggesting the infection rate may be 40 times higher than the number of confirmed cases. [nL1N2C900W]

In Austria, a study of more than 1,500 people found that less than 1% were currently infected in early April. [nL5N2BY0SY]

Barcelona are to give a sponsor naming rights to the Nou Camp for the first time and donate all the revenue to fighting coronavirus.

Barca’s stadium – which is known as Camp Nou in Catalan – has never had another name since opening in 1957.

The La Liga champions have given the title rights to the Barca Foundation, who will find a sponsor for 2020-21.

“Revenue will be used to fund research projects and the worldwide fight against the pandemic,” the club said.

“FC Barcelona and the Barca Foundation consider it a necessity that at this time of humanitarian crisis, the institution should use all its resources to fight against the coronavirus pandemic and its consequences.”

Spain is one of only four countries in the world to have more than 20,000 coronavirus-related deaths to date.

Barcelona did not have a shirt sponsor until 2010 when they signed a deal with the Qatar Foundation, although charity Unicef had appeared on their shirts from 2006.

  • You want to pocket the IMF coronavirus money for election – Wanlov to Nana Addo

Wanlov The Kubolor has dropped a new freestyle which captures his expressions of how the government has been managing the coronavirus outbreak in Ghana.

The politically conscious and outspoken musician titled his freestyle “Rona Flow” in which he called out the Ghanaian president over his recent decision to lift the ban on the partial lockdown imposed on Accra, Tema and some parts of Kumasi.

Last week, The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has granted Ghana a loan facility to the tune of one billion dollars ($1bn) to aid in its fight against COVID-19.

However, according to Wanlov in the song, the President rather want to use the money for election, hence, lifting the lockdown despite the increase in the COVID-19 cases.

  • Latin America, Caribbean economies poised for worst economic crisis – U.N. agency

The economies of Latin America and the Caribbean will contract by a record 5.3% in 2020 as the coronavirus outbreak ravages the region, unleashing the worst social and economic crisis in decades, according to a United Nations agency report on Tuesday.

The crisis will hit hardest in South America, a region especially dependent on exports to China and impacted by plummeting commodity prices, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean said in the report.

Mexico will also be hard hit, with a contraction of 6.5% this year, according to the report.

“The crisis in the region in 2020…will be the worst in its entire history,” the agency said. “To find a contraction of comparable magnitude, you need to go back to the Great Depression of 1930 (-5%) or even more to 1914 (-4.9%).”

The shriveling regional economy will leave almost 30 million in poverty and deepen already alarming levels of extreme poverty in some countries, the agency warned. Unemployment will spike to 11.5%, an increase of 3.4% compared to 2019.

Latin America has logged more than 100,000 cases of the novel coronavirus to date, according to a Reuters count based on official figures.

  • Coronavirus: Immigration to US to be suspended amid pandemic, Trump says

President Donald Trump has said he will sign an executive order to temporarily suspend all immigration to the US because of the coronavirus.

On Twitter, he cited “the attack from the invisible enemy”, as he calls the virus, and the need to protect the jobs of Americans, but did not give details.

It was not clear what programmes might be affected and whether the president would be able to carry out the order.

Critics say the government is using the pandemic to crack down on immigration.

Immigration has traditionally been a strong campaigning theme for Mr Trump, but has taken a back seat during the pandemic and in the lead-up to the November election.

Mr Trump’s announcement late on Monday came as the White House argued that the worst of the pandemic was over and the country could begin reopening. The restrictions on people’s movement, implemented by many states to curb the spread of the virus, have paralysed parts of the economy.

Over the past four weeks, more than 20 million Americans have registered for unemployment benefits. That amounts to roughly as many jobs as employers had added over the previous decade.

The US has more than 787,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and more than 42,000 deaths, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University, which is tracking the pandemic globally.

How can the proposals be implemented? It was not immediately clear who could be affected by Mr Trump’s announcement or when such a move could come into force, and the White House has not commented.

According to the New York Times, citing several people familiar with the plan, a formal order temporarily barring the provision of new green cards and work visas could be one way of implementing the measure; the administration would no longer approve any applications from foreigners to live and work in the US for an undetermined period of time.

Last month, the US suspended almost all visa processing, including for immigrants, because of the pandemic.

The US has already agreed with both Canada and Mexico to extend border restrictions on non-essential travel until at least mid-May.

Travel has also been sharply restricted from hard-hit European countries and China, though people with temporary work visas, students and business travellers are exempted.

On Monday, the US said it would continue to expel migrants it encounters along the border with Mexico for at least another month.

In recent weeks, emergency powers have been used to expel thousands of undocumented migrants on the US southern border. The public health measure lets officials override immigration laws, expediting removal processes.

Last year, just over one million people were granted lawful permanent resident status in the US, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The top countries of origin were Mexico, China, India, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines and Cuba.

More than half of those, though, were cases of “adjusted status from within the US” – meaning they were already there – and only 459,000 arrived from abroad. The latter group would be the ones presumably affected by an immigration ban.

When it comes to refugees, there were 30,000 people admitted into the US in 2019, most of them from Congo, Myanmar, Ukraine, Eritrea, Afghanistan and Syria.

  • Boxing promoters ‘must work as one to aid fans’ after coronavirus pandemic

The biggest promoters in boxing must bury rivalries and work together to ensure fans are not financially hit when the sport squeezes a barrage of shows into the second half of 2020, says 5 Live’s boxing experts.

The fight business has ground to a halt across the world in the face of the coronavirus pandemic and boxing is suspended in the UK until at least the end of May.

But a note of warning from British boxing chiefs last week pointed to the sport perhaps not being able to start back up as swiftly as some may hope given its reliance on the emergency services at a time where the NHS is under immense pressure.

So why might an eventual resumption hit fans in the pocket? And why might music acts even have an impact on when and where boxing can take place? BBC Sport boxing correspondent Mike Costello and 5 Live analyst Steve Bunce have had their say.

The British Boxing Board of Control last week stressed that while the NHS is “fighting” and “recovering from” the coronavirus pandemic “we cannot place any further pressure on the system”.

General secretary Robert Smith went further by stressing that “professional boxing cannot happen until normal NHS services resume”.

“NHS staff will have come through one of the biggest challenges faced by the NHS, in its history,” Smith wrote. “All involved will be physically and mentally fatigued. They will justifiably want to take rest and recuperation time. Therefore, due consideration has to be given to the medical personnel before any appointments to tournaments can take place.”

Smith’s words went further than many others have up to this point in intimating that boxing may not be able to roll out shows – even behind closed doors – as soon as restrictions on movement and mass gatherings are lifted.

In addition to the need for multiple ambulances at fight venues, rules state hospitals with specialist neurosurgery units must be close by.

Speaking on the 5 Live Boxing podcast, Costello said: “It might be that boxing takes longer to get going again than other sports because of the reliance on medical support. What struck me was the last statement by the board on recognising how NHS staff would need time to rest and recuperate.”

Bunce replied: “The idea that things get lifted in May and we could have a fight the next day is woefully misguided. One thing that is also being overlooked is that these boxers will need a good bit of time to get back fit and spar. Even if things were lifted in May you’d be looking at mid July at the earliest. I agree completely with the board.”

  • Pescara football club adopts Italian boy’s shirt design

A six-year-old boy in Italy is celebrating after his football shirt design was adopted by the professional team Pescara.

Luigi D’Agostino beat other children in a competition, run by the club for young fans, aimed at easing the boredom of being stuck indoors during the country’s coronavirus lockdown.

The competition’s motto was “give a kick to Covid-19”.

The boy’s dolphin design will be worn by the Serie B team next season.

The Pescara club – its full name is Pescara Calcio 1936 – played in the top Italian league, Serie A, for seven seasons in its history.

Its mascot is a dolphin – the club plays in an Adriatic resort town famous for its beaches. The club features Luigi’s triumph on its website.

Italian sports kit supplier Erreà will make the shirts and has invited Luigi to spend a special day at its Parma headquarters, to see the new team strip coming off the production line.

The competition was launched simply as a children’s game, using Erreà graphics, but its popularity on social media turned it into a business project, Italian media report.

Millions of people in Italy have been unable to leave their homes – except for essential reasons – since lockdown measures came into force on 9 March.

  • Trump suspends immigration to US to protect jobs of Americans

President Donald Trump has announced that immigration to the US will be temporarily suspended to protect the jobs of Americans.

The US President made the announcement on Twitter and he hinged the decision on “the attack from the invisible enemy”.

Trump tweeted; “In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!”

Though it is still unclear the mechanism President Trump will use to suspend immigration, how long such a suspension could last or what effect this will have on the operation of US border crossings and on those who already hold green cards, the immigration ban generated close to 10,000 reactions less than 25 minutes after the US President tweeted it and it foreshadowed the political fire it will ignite on Tuesday April 19 across the North American country.

The announcement came after the White House insisted that the worst of the pandemic is over and the country can begin reopening.

The US has over 787,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and more than 42,000 deaths, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University, which is tracking the pandemic globally.

  • Ozil’s wage cut refusal a huge PR own goal Carragher

Mesut Ozil has come in for fierce criticism from Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher after reports the German was one of three Arsenal players to refuse to take a pay cut.

The Premier League club confirmed on Monday that a 12.5 per cent overall reduction in wages had been agreed by the first-team squad , along with head coach Mikel Arteta and his staff, in a move aimed at mitigating the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, widespread reports later emerged suggesting Ozil was one of a trio of Gunners stars to reject the proposal.

Ozil is the club’s highest-paid player and Carragher believes the 31-year-old has scored “a huge PR own goal”.

“The fact the highest-paid player and possibly the biggest name at Arsenal has not gone with the rest of his team-mates and stuck together [is bad],” Carragher told The Football Show on Sky Sports News.

“Even if I was in Ozil’s position and I did not agree with that, I think the fact the rest of the team, your manager and people at the club have decided to be as one and make this decision, you have to go with it as a team.

“Football is a team game, it’s not an individual sport, and for someone like Ozil in that situation I think he’s got to go with what the rest of the players are doing. It’s a massive PR own goal.

“I’m not going to have a go at Mesut Ozil for the wages he’s earned. If you want to have a go at Mesut Ozil for the wages he’s got, blame the people who gave him the contract. We’re all in every walk of life trying to earn as much money as we possibly can.

“But when a situation like this comes in and you’re together as a team in a dressing room, I think the highest-paid member and the biggest name in that dressing room should be the one who almost sets the example really.”

    Mesut Ozil Arsenal

Ozil has previously been heavily involved in charitable work.

Upon marrying his wife Amine he promised to pay for 1,000 children to have life-changing surgery, while he also donated food to 100,000 homeless people across Turkey and Syria.

His agent, Dr Erkut Sogut, has always been quick to leap to the defence of his client with transfer talk and criticism of performances having never been far away and he says players at any level are free to question decisions being forced on them .

Sogut told The Athletic: “If a club is asking players to take a material pay reduction, a cut, or a deferment then the club is likely to need to really be transparent about its financial circumstances in order for players to make an informed choice about the extent they should be expected to assist the club through the coming months.

“It is not enough for a club to present a proposal to one member of the first-team squad and then ask them to go to the rest of the squad and get their consent to do it. That is not how individual contract negotiations should take place.

“A club may even ask a first-team manager to negotiate with players and this may influence some, particularly younger players or those on the fringe who fear there might be personal repercussions for him if he does not agree.

“In those circumstances it could be questionable that any consent from the players would be legally binding anyway as some players are not in a position to give true consent if they are under pressure to do so.

“You might hear 20 per cent, 30 per cent. It’s not enough to say a percentage. It’s more the club really needs to explain why this percentage. What other measures have the club considered and implemented? Will the club reduce or increase its transfer budget?

If so, by how much? Will the clubs be capping the salaries of new signings? Will the directors or senior management also be taking pay reductions during the period? If so, in what way? Will the club be ceasing all dividend payments to shareholders and if so, for what period? The players need to know about that.

“The players are entitled to know what will happen if they don’t agree. What will happen if I say no? Is this a genuine choice for the player or is there sanctions?”

  • Coronavirus: WHO worker killed in Myanmar collecting samples

A World Health Organization (WHO) driver has been killed in a conflict-riven region of Myanmar while out collecting Covid-19 monitoring samples.

Pyae Sone Win Maung was driving a well-marked United Nations vehicle when it was hit by gunfire in Rakhine State.

The UN says dozens of civilians have been killed as fighting between the military and the armed ethnic Arakan Army group escalated in recent weeks.

The two sides have blamed each other for the WHO driver’s death on Monday.

Both the military in Myanmar (also called Burma) and the Arakan Army deny being involved.

Myanmar’s Maj-Gen Tun Tun Nyi, a military spokesman, said his forces had no reason to attack the UN vehicle.

“They are working for us, for our country,” he told Reuters news agency. “We have the responsibility for that.”

The UN office in Myanmar said it was “deeply saddened” by the 28-year-old driver’s death, near a military checkpoint in Minbya township.

According to a post on Facebook, the marked vehicle was travelling from Sittwe to Yangon bringing Covid-19 surveillance samples “in support of the Ministry of Health and Sports”.

The UN did not say who carried out the shooting, which also left a government employee injured.

The driver’s father, Htay Win Maung, said his heart was “broken”.

“I am trying to calm myself thinking he died in serving his duty at the frontline,” he added. “He went there in the midst of fighting when many people didn’t dare to go.”

Countries including the UK and the US have called for an end to fighting amid the global coronavirus pandemic. More than 80 cases have been reported in Myanmar, along with four deaths.

The Arakan Army, ethnic Buddhists who have escalated their campaign for self-rule in the last two years, declared a month-long ceasefire, but this was rejected by the government.

  • You have to go – Van Persie explains how Van Gaal told him to leave Manchester United

Robin van Persie has opened up on his Manchester United exit five years ago, insisting he planned to see out the final year of his contract before sitting down for a meeting with “ruthless” Louis van Gaal.

The Red Devils snapped up Van Persie for an initial £22.5 million ($28m) from arch-rivals Arsenal in the summer of 2012, tying the prolific forward down to a four-year deal at Old Trafford.

The ex-Netherlands star instantly provided a return on the club’s investment, scoring 26 goals in his first 36 Premier League appearances to help fire United to the title.

Unfortunately, his spell in Manchester took a turn for the worst when Sir Alex Ferguson left the club, as he was reduced to a bit-part role under the legendary manager’s successor David Moyes.

Van Persie’s fortunes didn’t improve much when Van Gaal was drafted in to replace Moyes ahead of the 2014-15 season, with a string of injuries significantly limiting his contribution to the team.

Van Gaal ultimately deemed the former Arsenal frontman surplus to requirements a year before his final deal was due to expire, and he was sold to Fenerbahce for a cut-price fee of £4 million.

“I had this chat with Louis van Gaal and he told me: ‘OK Robin, our ways will part. I’m the coach, you’re the player – you have to go, your time is up’,” Van Persie told the High Performance Podcast of his acrimonious departure.

“I was like: ‘Yeah but I still have a contract?’ He said: ‘I don’t care’.

“Ruthless. Towards the end of it, I saw something coming but not this ruthless. And the way he said it as well. And then a lot of things go through your mind when you get a message like that.

“I still had a contract, my family was happy, it was my 11th year in England. We love living in England. What’s next?

“My kids are going to school, they have their friends and everything. So in a split second, all these things come across [your mind]. How do you react to that?

“I said: ‘We will see what happens. That’s your opinion. But I have a contract and I’m happy in England at Manchester United. So we will see what happens’. And I stood up, shook his hand and left it.”

  • DKBs jokes are dry Movie producer Kobi Rana fires

Movie producer and director Kobi Rana has hit back at comedian DKB following claims he fails to pay actors after using their services.

This comes on the back of revelation by veteran actor Kofi Adjorlolo that seven movie producers in Ghana owe him money.

Comedian DKB alleged that Kobi Rana was one of the movie producers Kofi Adjorlolo worked for without receiving his pay.

The comedian also claimed that the movie producer owes him GH¢500.00 for using his service in a movie.

I repeat Kofi Adjorlolo is not in any of my movies out there. If your foolish blogger and presenter knew their job, they would know this and keep my name out of it. For the comedian, he is doing his usual dry jokes,” Kobi Rana responded to allegations.

  • Coronavirus: There are no ‘false positive’ cases – Ghana Health Service

Ghana has recorded 1042 positive cases of COVID-19 and 99 recovery cases. More than 60,000 people whose samples were collected through contact tracing and other enhanced testing approaches have tested negative for the virus.

However, rumormongers have cast doubts over the number of positive cases, saying the samples of some of the people who have tested positive might not be the actual case. The claim is that there might be “false positve” cases.

Addressing the issue, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye debunked the claims that there may be persons mistakenly testing positive for Coronavirus in the country.

The GHS Director General wants Ghanaians to know that the research centers in charge of testing samples for the virus are using this standard method and there is no way any result could be faulty.
