  • Coronavirus: Africa must look at it’s past for solution – Ezeigbo of Ghana

As the Coronavirus scare is shutting down large and small economies around the world, drastic measures are being sought for to bring some relief to the pandemic that has claimed several lives and affected several others in different ways.

Africa as a continent has begun to record imported cases of Corona Virus, prompting various African leaders to come out with homegrown remedies to halt the spread of the virus in Africa.

One such leader who have added his voice to the call is the EzeIgbo of Ghana HRM King Dr Chukwudi J. Ihenetu. Speaking to bloggers from the Ghana Chamber of Content Producers, the King reiterated the need for Africans to begin looking into their past for solution to such pandemics.

“This is the point I have always made, we trivialize everything God has given to us, we allowed the west to condemn our God-given resources and we embraced their judgement without asking questions”. He stated.

Speaking on the situation in Nigeria, He said “You can imagine that security agencies in Nigeria arrest people for trading or transporting ogogoro while across our seaports foreign alcohol of the same components are being imported with our foreign reserves being depleted. While components of cocaine is used for drug production our marijuana was prohibited. And now marijuana that was largely an African wide vegetable has now become a big business plant in America because of its various uses, including drug production. ”

The King further spoke on how our history has been sidelined at our own detriment ” Before the coming of the west, our forefathers had a solution for almost all their needs based on what is available to us. But today we have become so brainwashed and unable to think of what to do with our natural resources. Drugs produced from Chinese herbs which is available to them and in tune with their DNA are being imported here while those of our continent are being abandoned and are going extinct.

Unfortunately, this primitive thinking is enforced by our security agencies who inadvertently are serving western interest while undermining Africa’s development.

Africans must as a matter of fact begin to look inwards for solution. There should be a concerted effort towards backward integration. Before some of our finest medicinal herbs go extinct we must return to our rural communities and begin to document them. Our universities and research institutions must begin to focus on how to utilize what is available to us because it is very strategic to building our economy and our technological advancement.”

In conclusion, he admonished Africans to use this period of isolation to Rediscover themselves and develop homemade solutions to Africa’s problems.

  • WRA recommends total lockdown of major cities in the country

Water for Rural Africa (WRA) has followed closely with grave apprehension the continuous increase of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country and the approach being adopted by the national response team to combat a pandemic that has brought the world economies to their knees.

There is no denying the fact that the future of this great nation is at risk judging from what the coronavirus has done to a country like Italy which has better resources and a more robust healthcare system. Italy probably undermined the threat posed by this pandemic. The devastating effect on Italy as a result of an initial lukewarm attitude of Leaders in Italy should serve as a lesson for the government of the day. Ghana will not be in position to handle the pandemic if we allow the situation to get out hand.

The worrying trend of horizontal spread otherwise known as community spread is on the ascendency and this is the point where complexities arise and contact tracing loses its potency.

WRA wishes to recommend to the government of the day, to Lockdown major cities in the country in order to save the nation from total collapse. This will certainly not be a popular decision for the leadership and a section of the populace, but we have reached that point where a draconian approach backed by proven results in other countries hit by the pandemic remains the last resort and the earlier, the better. India did not record as much as we currently have, before issuing a directive for a lockdown.

However, WRA recommends a minimum of 48 hour grace period for citizens, to prepare adequately for survival during the period. It is also crucial for government to set aside funds for relief items and programmed delivery channels devoid of politics and discrimination in order to protect the less privileged in the catchment areas.

Let us ensure water reaches rural communities that have no access to clean water.

  • Coronavirus: Why Ghana has gone into mourning after mass funeral ban

In our series of letters from African writers, journalist and former Ghana government minister Elizabeth Ohene writes about the dramatic impact coronavirus is having on life in her country and beyond.

If anyone had any doubt about just how serious the Covid-19 outbreak is, we now have proof positive, we are in the midst of a huge crisis.

This is a crisis not measured yet by how many people have been taken ill, or are in hospital or have died.

Here in Ghana, there are some things that are sacred in our lives and nobody touches them under any circumstance: religion, handshakes and funerals.

These are subjects that are not up for discussion and many people believe they define our very existence.

For weeks, government and health officials here have been warning everybody to improve personal hygiene and avoid crowds.

Many people preferred to think that the coronavirus would not make it into sub-Saharan Africa and therefore they believed the warnings by the health experts could be ignored.

‘Only enemies refuse to shake hands’

Whoever heard of a Ghanaian, indeed, an African greeting another person and not shaking hands?

To refuse or ignore to shake hands with someone means that person is an enemy. Now we can’t shake hands with anybody, friend or foe.

President Nana Akufo-Addo set the tone for the new rules at the celebrations of Ghana’s 63rd independence anniversary on 6 March, when he ostentatiously kept both his hands resolutely behind his back when he arrived at the ceremony to greet those seated on the dais.

And as though the prohibition on handshaking was not traumatic enough, a ban has been put on the holding of funerals. The official announcement says there can be private burials, but no mass gatherings of mourners.

I am not sure I can convey the enormity of this on the Ghanaian psyche.

There is no such thing as a private burial in our thinking and funerals are huge, dramatic and regular ceremonies.

    Our lives revolve around funerals.

The catering industry relies on funerals to survive, the textile industry needs orders for funeral cloths to stay in business, the tailors and dressmakers are busy mostly because they make clothes for funerals; choral groups, events organisers, transportation and manufacturers and sellers of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks would disappear without funerals.

But there will be no more funerals.

Come to think of it, what with the handshaking ban, it’s probably just as well that a ban has been placed on funerals.

We can’t have funerals and not shake hands, the entire funeral ceremony consists of shaking hands, shaking hands and shaking hands.

The ban on religious gatherings here, and in some countries elsewhere on the continent, is having a big impact on people for whom communal prayer and the discipline of the religious calendar are central to their lives.

But there is silence in the mosques and in the churches here in Ghana.

When the announcement was first made by the president, the Christian leaders were stunned and the charismatic churches, in particular, were in total disbelief.

    Miracle prayers
It was unthinkable that anything or anybody could close church services. The all-night services, the miracle services, the anointing services have taken over all our lives.

Some had hoped that the promise of miracle prayers to save Ghana from the scourge of coronavirus would convince the president to keep the churches and mosques open, but he was not moved to change his mind.

And they will stay closed throughout Easter, the most sacred festival on the Christian calendar.

The order to close the churches is turning out to be the most difficult one for people to obey.

The mainstream churches are complying and many are offering online services, which include provisions for offertory to be made through mobile money donations.

But some of the charismatic churches seem to think they are allowed to flout the order not to hold church services by claiming they are offering special prayers against Covid-19.

Going to church multiple times a week is normal for many people and the news is usually full of the antics of some of the so-called men of God.

The president asked the nation to fast and pray on Wednesday this week and doubtless, some people would have had difficulty accepting that they could fast and pray by themselves at home without going to church.

From here, we keenly follow all the news about how the rest of the continent is doing with the role of religion in the march of the deadly coronavirus.

I have no doubt that the approach of Tanzanian President John Magufuli would be cited by some people here as worth following.

He has banned public gatherings and closed schools as we have, but he said he did not ban church or mosque worship because these were places where “true healing” took place.

Coronavirus is a devil, it can not live in the body of Christ, it will burn instantly. This is a time to build our faith,” President Magufuli, who has a PhD in chemistry and is a devout Catholic, said at a church service last Sunday.

President Akufo-Addo has urged us to seek the face of God and pray for Ghana but he is sticking to the science and emphasising the washing of hands, social distancing and the churches and mosques remain closed.

It is now getting through to many people that we are in deadly uncharted territory when the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), probably the biggest church in southern Africa, announced it had postponed all gatherings including their Easter service.

This service normally draws millions of pilgrims, who congregate at the foothills of the Moria Mountain in Limpopo during the Easter weekend, and there surely cannot be a more dramatic spectacle.

Never, in the history of the ZCC, since its inception in 1910, has the church postponed or cancelled its pilgrimage.

We can’t shake hands, we can’t have funerals, we can’t go to worship at the mosque or the church, the ZCC has postponed its Easter pilgrimage; we are in the midst of an emergency alright.

  • Coronavirus: Government actively discussing possible lockdown Akufo-Addo assures TUC

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said his administration is currently discussing and giving consideration to the issue of a nationwide lockdown as proposed by the Trade Unions Congress (TUC) in a recent letter to him.

President Akufo-Addo gave the hint when he addressed a five-member top hierarchy delegation of the Trade Unions Congress (TUC) at the Jubilee House.

The TUC members present were the Secretary-General of the TUC, Dr Yaw Baah; Deputy Secretary-General of the TUC, Joshua Ansah; Chairman of the TUC, Richard Yeboah; Vice-Chairman of the TUC, Alex Nyarko-Opoku; and the Head of Research and Chief Economist of the TUC, Dr Kwabena Nyarko-Otoo.

“People are talking now in Ghana about a lockdown. Majority of the people who will be affected by decisions of that nature are the working people of our country, the ordinary people of Ghana, they are the ones that will be most affected and it is important for us when we are taking these decisions to take into account their circumstances and conditions to lockdown Accra”, President Akufo-Addo said.

“What are the consequences when we lockdown the country? A responsible government is required to look at all the implications before decisions are made and that is the exercise on which we are currently engaged and I am hoping that much sooner than later, we will come to an agreement within government as to what these measures are and then the Ghanaian people will be informed”, President Akufo-Addo added.

    Secretary-General of the TUC

Secretary-General of the TUC, Dr.Yaw Baah, in a brief remark, noted that their letter to the President asking for a total lockdown of the country was to express support for all that government has done so far and not to undermine same.

He added that calls from their members about what the government intends to do about the working population necessitated the communication sent to the Presidency. He pledged the TUC’s support for the government throughout the difficult season of fighting to contain and stop the coronavirus, Covid-19, in Ghana.

    Attendees of the Meeting

As part of the meeting with the TUC Executive, the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President Akosua Frema Osei Opare, Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kyerematen, Minister of Health Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, and National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah and the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations Ignatius Baffour-Awuah were in attendance.

  • Coronavirus: More calls for G20 to suspend Africa debt

Calls have intensified for developed nations to consider suspending debt repayments by African nations in order to help them tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this week, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed issued a memorandum to leaders of the G20 – a group of countries with the largest economies – asking them to consider writing off interests in loans owed by African nations.

As the leaders hold their virtual emergency summit on Thursday, British charity Oxfam has written to them asking for a debt moratorium.

Oxfam says African countries are already using scarce resources to try and stop the spread of coronavirus.

Speaking ahead of the virtual summit, Oxfam Pan Africa Director Peter Kamalingin said:

“This is the moment that Africa needs to use all its existing resources to cope with the emergency.

It makes no sense for African countries to transfer much-needed resources to foreign banks, developed nations with capacity to cope with the pandemic, or international institutions.”

  • Ghana Water Company introduces new billing system

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has introduced a temporary billing regime to bill customers on an average of their last three months consumption.

“Thus, all GWCLs customers will for the next few months, be billed on estimated consumption, based on an average of their consumption from January to March 2020,” the company said in a press release Thursday.

According to GWCL, this has become “necessary so as to reduce the frequency of visits by our Meter Readers to the premises of customers in order to reduce the spread of the covid-19 pandemic.”

The management assures customers that, when the situation normalizes, meter readings by our Meter Readers will resume and all anomalies will be rectified.

“In effect, if you have consumed more or less than you have been billed over the period, it will reflect in the meter readings, and subsequently be corrected by the billing system”.

“Management wishes also to advise customers that, although all offices of the GWCL remain open during this period, customers are encouraged to pay their bills via Mobile Money with all the telecommunication networks.”

  • South Africa: ‘Our children are dying, but President Ramaphosa doesn’t care’

In our series of letters from African journalists, South African filmmaker and writer Serusha Govender reports on the growing anger fuelled by a spate of child murders.

Passing by Cape Town’s Parliament Square earlier this month, I caught sight of Fadiel Adams camped outside on the final days of a hunger strike.

This was a father making a desperate stand against what he felt was the government’s lack of interest in combating the recent spate of child murders in the Western Cape province.

The child murder rate has been high for some time in South Africa, but since the beginning of the year, several killings close to Cape Town have drawn nationwide fury and calls for immediate action.

The murder of seven-year-old Tazne van Wyk in early February was the spark.

Tazne went missing on 7 February. Her body was found two weeks later after her suspected murderer led police to the storm drain where he said he had disposed of it.

The suspect, a violent multiple offender had been released on parole. He was in prison for the kidnapping and murder of another child.

Mr Adams ended his hunger strike after six days, once he had handed a memorandum to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s secretary, but his campaign is far from over.

    ‘We are dying here’

He is not convinced that the president will do anything. He accused the president of not caring, adding that “this government has failed all of us”.

“We are dying here, our children are dying,” said Mr Adams.

“If Ramaphosa really cared he would have made an immediate directive… I don’t condone violence or burning things, but we won’t stop raising this [issue]. If we have to shut down this whole city to make our point next time then we will.”

    President Ramaphosa talking to people

After Tazne’s body was found, Mr Ramaphosa visited her community in Elsies River and apologised.

He said that the accused should never have been given parole, adding that he knew how the community felt and that urgent action would be taken.

His words were reminiscent of his speech to protesting crowds outside parliament after a 19-year-old student, Uyinene Mrwetyana, was murdered by a postal worker last year.

This triggered nationwide protests against the high levels of violence against women and children, which in turn prompted the president to promise immediate targeted action.

Then, too, Mr Ramaphosa told the crowds that this should never have happened, that he would take action, and that he knew how they felt.

But following Tazne’s killing, his audience had had enough of platitudes, with many saying that they wanted less smooth-talking and more real action being taken to keep their children safe.

And they are right to be concerned as Cape Town does seem to have a high number of child murders, and it appears to be getting worse.

Crime statistics released last year showed that four children are murdered every week in the Western Cape Province alone and, overall, child murders have increased across the country by almost 30% over a decade.

On the same day that Tazne went missing, seven-year-old Reagan Gertse disappeared. His body was discovered on a farm in the Western Cape a week later. The man accused of killing Reagan was also a violent criminal released on parole.

    Serusha Govender

And there have been other cases of people on parole committing murder.

When the president promises to fix the problem by pouring more money into a criminal justice system that is releasing violent criminals into communities without any warning, the government should not be too surprised when those communities lose faith and lash out.

When the man accused of killing Tazne appeared in court, community members revolted. They attempted to storm the court building and, when that failed, they torched nearby buildings they said were frequented by neighbourhood criminals, including the accused.

Community Activist Mr Adams said that no-one wanted to mete out vigilante justice.

“To be honest their reaction was mild in comparison to the violence this community has already faced… How else did you expect them to express their anger and frustration at what’s been happening?” he asked.

  • Instagram’s CEO is managing one of the world’s biggest social networks from his garage

(CNN)“I don’t normally work from my garage,” Adam Mosseri said when asked what it’s like to run one of the biggest social media platforms in the world from his San Francisco home.

For years, Instagram has been synonymous with travel and experiences. Its users fill their feeds with carefully filtered and cropped photos of exotic locations and colorful venues. But now, from his plywood-lined garage, Mosseri, Instagram’s CEO, is telling his users to do what he’s doing: stay at home.
Over the past week the company launched a dedicated “Stay at Home” tab featured prominently in the Stories section at the top of its feed. As the name suggests, the feature offers a way for users to share updates on their stay-at-home life at a time as people in vast parts of America and across the world have essentially been not to go outside except for essentials to limit the spread of the coronavirus. And it might actually help raise awareness of the need to stay in. Mosseri revealed Tuesday that the “Stay at Home” Instagram stories were so popular it almost crashed the site in the hours after it went live.
The fact that a well-intentioned new feature nearly took down the entire service is a reminder of just how many fires Instagram and Mosseri are working to put out at once amid the coronavirus outbreak. Among other pressing issues, he and his team must: keep their servers up and running while much of the world is forced to shift their lives online; try to encourage people on the platform to maintain social distancing; combating inaccurate and potentially dangerous misinformation about the coronavirus at a time when there is apparently an unprecedented amount of traffic on the site; and do all this while working outside the office.
“Having our workforce, particularly our moderators, work from home, is creating all sort of challenges that we need to work through,” Mosseri said in an interview with CNN Business over Skype on Tuesday from inside the garage that is now his de facto command center.
“Just generally, the amount of output we should be able to expect on a per person basis is just going to go down,” he said. “There is no way around that, which is why it is so important we get creative and make sure that we continue to make sure we keep people stay safe on the platform.” Mosseri added that the company still needs to stay on top of a range of challenges like content related to child exploitation and terrorism.
For years, Instagram’s parent company, Facebook, has been trying to combat the spread of misinformation on its platforms. The coronavirus presents a whole new challenge as people around the globe are desperate for just about any information.
Instagram’s struggles in dealing with the anti-vaccine movement might not inspire much confidence in the company’s ability to get ahead of false information about the coronavirus.
But over the past few weeks and months it has brought in new rules and features specifically for the coronavirus crisis. Some of those features — like not recommending accounts that spread medical misinformation when people search terms related to the virus (which the company says will roll out in the coming days) — are steps critics of anti-vaccine accounts have been calling for for some time.
Mosseri said the company’s focus has been getting users accurate information about the virus — links to official government agencies have appeared at the top of users’ Instagram feeds around the world. The company, like other social media platforms, has taken other steps to highlight information from the World Health Organization.
“I actually think search in general on platforms like ours gets way too much attention because it is not something people do that often. It is more important that people get good information when they come to the app in the first place,” he said.
Like other companies, Instagram and Facebook instructed employees to work from home before it became mandatory in many states. “We need to take care of our people if we are going to be able to help address the crisis and live up to our responsibility,” Mosseri said.
But new rules to tackle coronavirus misinformation and other initiatives, like banning ads for the sale of face masks (to help ensure they are available for medical workers in most need of them), require new protocols, staff training and sometimes new systems to implement, all of which is more difficult to do with staff working remotely.
As a result, Mosseri said Facebook and Instagram staff that don’t normally work on moderation are volunteering to help.
Twitter and YouTube also warned that the shift to working from home and reliance on automated content moderation may lead to more mistakes.
The heightened anxiety felt by users will likely only amplify errors. For example, last Tuesday there were widespread reports of Facebook suddenly marking posts from users about everything from the coronavirus to their pets as violating the platform’s rules. The problem was fixed within a few hours and Facebook said it had nothing to do with the changes in its workforce
With false claims about purported cures and preventative steps that can be take against the virus circulating online, ensuring the spread of accurate information is now literally a matter of life or death.

  • Sunyani drugs cartel busted

A swoop by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police in Sunyani has led to the arrest of four suspected drug barons at their hideouts in the Sunyani municipality.

They are Abass Musah, alias Jawura, 25; Ernest Adu Yeboah aka Baby Raster, 40; Iddrisu Sarsal aka Cafu or Obuasi, 44, and Emmanuel Ofosu, 22.

They were arrested on Tuesday dawn upon intelligence gathering by the unit.

Briefing DAILY GUIDE on the operation, the Bono Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Nana Kwaku Duah, said they carried out the swoop because the activities of drug barons and their agents were promoting violent crimes in the municipality and needed to be flushed out.

According to him, upon intelligence gathering, Detective Chief Inspector Adams Yahaya led a team to arrest them. He explained that Ernest Adu Yeboah, who claimed to be a farmer, was at Sunyani Area Four when he was arrested.

A search conducted in his room revealed a black polythene bag containing 155 cement paper wraps and another quantity of dried leaves also in another black polythene both believed to be cannabis. He admitted ownership of the items and was, therefore, arrested.

The team went ahead to arrest Emmanuel Ofosu in a metal fabrication shop at Sunyani New Town where he sleeps. A search in the shop revealed 43 cement paper wraps suspected to be Indian hemp concealed in a tool box. He also admitted ownership of it but explained they were given to him by Abass Musah on March 23, 2020 to be retailed for him at a popular wee base called Akokra Kojo.

He led the team to the house of Abass where he was arrested. Abass, who originally told the police he deals in shoes later, admitted giving the exhibits to Emmanuel Ofosu.

The team proceeded to Penkwasi and arrested Iddrisu Abass. When his room was searched, 91 cement paper wraps containing dried leaves were found. Another black polythene bag which contained a quantity of dried leaves was also found.

In the same room, three brown cellotaped compressed slabs of dried leaves concealed in a three-in-one sofa with sofa cloth were retrieved.

The police explained that all these three barons have agents at Akokra Kojo, an underground sewage tunnel in Sunyani, where the illicit drug trade goes on.

Chief Superintendent Nana Kwaku Duah said they had been charged with possession of narcotic drugs without lawful authority contrary to section 2(1) of Narcotic Control Enforcement and Sanction Law, PNDC L 236 and arraigned.

He appealed to the members of the public in the Bono Region in particular to volunteer information that would lead to the arrest of more of such people, promising that their identities would never be revealed by the police.

  • Senate approves historic $2 trillion stimulus deal amid growing coronavirus fears

Washington (CNN)The Senate on Wednesday approved a historic, $2 trillion stimulus package to provide a jolt to an economy reeling from the coronavirus pandemic, capping days of intense negotiations that produced one of the most expensive and far-reaching measures Congress has ever considered.

In a remarkable sign of overwhelming bipartisan support for the legislation, the vote was unanimous at 96-0.
The legislation represents the largest emergency aid package in US history and the most significant legislative action taken to address the rapidly intensifying coronavirus crisis, which is overwhelming hospitals and grinding much of the economy to a halt.
It will next go to the House for a vote. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced Wednesday evening ahead of Senate passage that the House will convene at 9 a.m. on Friday to consider the relief package. The plan is to pass the bill by voice vote, a move that would allow the House to avoid forcing all members to return to Washington for a recorded roll call vote.
President Donald Trump has indicated he will sign the measure and tweeted his congratulations after it cleared the Senate.
The White House and Senate leaders struck a major deal early Wednesday morning on the package. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell formally announced the agreement on the Senate floor, describing it as “a wartime level of investment for our nation.”
LIVE UPDATES: Coronavirus pandemic alters life as we know it
Legislative text of the final deal was released Wednesday evening ahead of a final vote. Key elements of the proposal are $250 billion set aside for direct payments to individuals and families, $350 billion in small business loans, $250 billion in unemployment insurance benefits and $500 billion in loans for distressed companies.
The plan will deliver a massive infusion of financial aid into a struggling economy hard hit by job loss, with provisions to help impacted American workers and families as well as small businesses and major industries including airlines.
Under the plan, individuals who earn $75,000 in adjusted gross income or less would get direct payments of $1,200 each, with married couples earning up to $150,000 receiving $2,400 — and an additional $500 per each child. The payment would scale down by income, phasing out entirely at $99,000 for singles and $198,000 for couples without children.
In addition, the bill would provide a major amount of funding for hard-hit hospitals — $130 billion — as well as $150 billion for state and local governments that are cash-strapped due to their response to coronavirus.
It also has a provision that would block Trump and his family, as well as other top government officials and members of Congress, from getting loans or investments from Treasury programs in the stimulus, according to Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s office.
A few senators were missing from the vote due to concerns about their health amid the coronavirus outbreak, including GOP Sen. Whip John Thune who missed the vote because he was not feeling well, his communications director said in a series of tweets. The tweets do not mention coronavirus or self-quarantine, but said he returned home to South Dakota “out of an abundance of caution.”

    Hard-fought negotiations

A deal came together after hard-fought negotiations between congressional Republicans, Democrats and the Trump administration.
After two consecutive days of high-profile setbacks — with Senate Democrats blocking procedural votes on Sunday and Monday over opposition to a bill initially crafted by Senate Republicans — a deal appeared to be imminent by Tuesday morning, but was ultimately not announced until the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Democrats had argued over the course of negotiations that they wanted to see more safeguards for American workers in the deal and oversight for how funding would be doled out.
There was intense partisan debate over the $500 billion proposal to provide loans to distressed companies, with $50 billion in loans for passenger air carriers. Democrats initially contended there was not enough oversight on how the money would be disbursed, but the Trump administration agreed to an oversight board and the creation of an inspector general position to review how the money is spent.
There has also been controversy over the stimulus plan’s unemployment benefits.
On Wednesday afternoon, the package hit a last-minute snag with a group of Republican senators arguing that it would incentivize unemployment and could trigger worker shortages and supply disruptions by providing more money to some unemployed workers than they would make working.
“This bill pays you more not to work than if you were working,” GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said. “You’re literally incentivizing taking people out of the workforce at a time when we need critical infrastructure supplied with workers.”
Republican critics secured a Wednesday evening vote on an amendment to cap unemployment benefits at 100% of the wages workers received while employed, but the amendment did not pass.

Legislation heads to the House next

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is now emphasizing that Democrats should “recognize the good” in the massive stimulus.
“What is important is for us to recognize the good that is in the bill, appreciate it for what it does. Don’t judge it for what it doesn’t because we have more bills to come,” the California Democrat told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room” Wednesday evening.
Those comments came just after Pelosi told House Democrats on a series of conference calls that she is already thinking about the substance of the fourth coronavirus relief package that Congress will have to pass to respond to the crisis, according to sources on the calls.
Pelosi made it clear to members who are disappointed that the pending bill did not include enough of their priorities that they will have a chance to add those provisions in the fourth package, the sources said.
But passage in the House has been made more daunting by the fact that several of its members have tested positive for coronavirus, while many more have self-quarantined after contact with infected individuals.
A voice vote is a procedural move that would avoid a recorded roll call vote, which would have forced members now dispersed throughout the country to travel back to Washington to get the stimulus across the finish line.
“Members are further advised that due to the limited flight options, Members participating in self-quarantine, and several states mandating stay-at-home orders, we expect the bill to pass by voice vote on Friday,” Hoyer announced in a notice to members Wednesday evening.
Pelosi had suggested on Tuesday that she was hoping to avoid bringing the full House back to Washington to vote on the package, seeking to pass it through unanimous consent instead. But any individual member can block such a move, which would make passage more difficult.
This story has been updated to include additional developments Wednesday.

  • Searching for love in the time of coronavirus

Jenny, a 29-year-old woman in Seattle, nursed a latte on her date with a man she’d met on the dating app Bumble.

With coronavirus cases trending in the city, he’d invited her out that Saturday for what they both knew these days might be a risky rendezvous.
Jenny, who asked that CNN leave out her last name for privacy reasons, said the Anchorhead coffee shop in the city’s downtown area was much less crowded than usual.
She and her date shared interests in sci-fi and books, and their coffee date went well. They made plans to see each other again.

Statewide bans slowed down the romance

But then Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee issued rules effectively shutting down bars and restaurants in the city.
Jenny told CNN she has a high threshold for going over to a date’s house and they’re not at that stage yet. So for now, they’re texting and making plans to play Nintendo online together.
Two thousand miles away in Chicago, a corporate attorney had just met a man on Hinge, another dating app. For professional reasons, she asked that her name not be used in this story.
The conversation was flowing, ranging from their favorite podcasts to which presidential candidates’ campaigns they’d volunteered for. They were ready to meet face-to-face.
But they didn’t get that far.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued a similar ban closing all the places where they’d might be able to meet and kick off a fledgling courtship.
With 30 degree (Fahrenheit) temperatures in the Windy City, taking a walk or having picnic weren’t the most pleasant options either.
For now, they’ve settled on getting to know each other better over the phone calls.
Now that grabbing a drink with a potential lover feels almost like a seismic risk, millions of singles reckon with a dilemma as they seek love in the time of coronavirus.
Do you risk trying to meet someone or do you put love and intimacy on hold for weeks or even months?
As of March 12, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio wasn’t ready to rule out the quest for love. He got a dating question at a press conference, and said, “It is dangerous to stop living life.”
He advised to do basic due diligence before meeting someone new.
“I do think it’s fine to have a social life but you got to exercise some smart rules, right?” De Blasio said. “If you’re sick, don’t go on a date. If the date is sick, don’t go on the dates.”
He urged prospective lovers to err toward over-communicating about any potential symptoms, asking questions such as, “‘Hi, are you sick today?’
“So the other thing is, you know, with a date, you know, you might keep a little more distance than you might have before,” de Blasio added.

    Practical tips

For those who may be starting to catch feelings but don’t want to catch coronavirus, Dating.com is offering a few tips on how to spend some quality time with your special someone. The dating sevice’s tips include watching a movie simultaneously over video chat together, or cooking the same meal together over video chat.
Netflix offers a “watch together” feature, enabling viewers in two different locations to watch the same film or show together.
And the dating app Bumble published a blog post by epidemiologist Dr. Seema Yasmin urging those on the app to avoid shaking hands if users opt to meet in person and to stay several feet away from each other.
“If you’re confined to your home for days, you certainly have more time on your hands to plan a date with someone you met on a dating app,” Yasmin wrote. “But should you cancel? If you’re sick, absolutely.”
Hinge told CNN that it prioritizes its users’ safety and wants them “to feel prepared during this pandemic. We strongly encourage users to use their best judgment and be as safe as possible during this time, including following the latest guidelines from the World Health Organization.”
Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, had similar advice on how to keep dating, but stay illness-free. He recommends asking, “How are you feeling? Have you had any symptoms? Do you have any fever? Are you comfortable going out?
“I think that’s a reasonable thing to do,” he said.
Even with bans on group gatherings, Schaffner said that dating is still an option because it only involves two people. The trick is to enjoy each other’s company while slipping away from any crowds you see.
“Maybe going for a walk in the park and getting a cup of coffee afterward or a soda,” Schaffner said. “So dating styles may have to change, but I wouldn’t think two people getting together would be inappropriate. And you can have a conversation about that.”
The coronavirus pandemic has reached crisis levels in Italy, and offers a preview of how the American situation could develop in the coming weeks. The dating world is no different.
Francesa Owens, a mother living with her 19-year-old daughter Antonia in Spoleto, Italy, told CNN she suffers from chronic variable immunodeficiency, and she didn’t want her daughter possibly bringing Covid-19 home.
Owens told Antonia she could either live with her boyfriend or live with her.
Antonio had been seeing her boyfriend for six months, ate dinner with him every day and spent every weekend with him. But her love for her mother trumped all of it.
For awhile, they tried to keep up in-person visits at a distance.
“We used to just meet in the courtyard, but had to sit on separate benches,” Antonia said.
They couldn’t touch. Sometimes her boyfriend just sang to her from across the courtyard.
“I would see him every day. But I told him from now on we have to keep distance because my mom is chronically ill,” Antonia said.
Then the rules got stricter, and everyone had to stay home. “I’m not seeing him at all at the moment,” Antonia said.
The mother and daughter watch films and drink prosecco and tend flowers on their balcony to help pass the time. And Antonia still video chats with her boyfriend, who lives in the same village.

A long-distance relationship an hour away

Another Italian, 24-year-old Angelo di Gregorio, told CNN he met a man he liked in December and the relationship seems promising.
Di Gregorio lives in Valeggio, about 20 miles outside of Verona. His love interest lives about an hour away by car, so the pandemic’s travel restrictions have put their budding romance in purgatory.
Di Gregorio said that with his job leading travel expeditions, love can be fleeting, so finding someone is precious.
“It’s the first time that I feel like going forward, since I’m always traveling for work,” he said.
But the country’s travel ban has made seeing each other impossible.
“We FaceTime each other to talk. It seems like a long-distance relationship, even though it’s not.”
He says the two have placed their hopes on April 3rd, the date when the country’s travel restrictions are expected to be lifted.
“If this thing is being postponed, then we don’t know what we do,” he said.
Coronavirus has placed dating, like nearly every aspect of life, in a state of suspended animation.
“I don’t know how people can start dating right now, to be honest,” di Gregorio said. “They should just postpone it. It’s just too much.”

  • It will be a big blow to cancel 2019/20 GPL season – Berekum Chelsea chief

Berekum Chelsea FC administrative manager Francis Adjei says cancelling the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League season will be a big blow to his side, having invested heavily prior to the start of the new season.

The Blues are currently 2nd on the league table with 26 points, just two points adrift leaders Aduana Stars after 15 matches played thus far.

According to Adjei, it is too early to decide the fate of the topflight league following its disruption by the coronavirus pandemic.

The league has been suspended due to the outbreak of the deadly virus which has so far infected nearly 450,000 persons worldwide, claiming almost 20,000 lives.

Ghana has so far recorded 68 confirmed cases of Covid-19, involving two deaths.

“It will be a big blow because we’ve worked hard for this,” Adjei told Goal.

“This season has not been an easy one. This is one of the toughest seasons we are playing. We’ve tried to invest a lot to get a good position and probably win the league.

“Should we have to cancel the league for a very good reason, we will understand and accept the decision for the greater good. It will be a big setback but we have to stand with the GFA in times of difficulty.”

“As a club administrator and a member of the Premier League Management Committee, I know we cannot just stand up and cancel the league. We have to consider all factors,” Adjei said when quizzed about the situation.

“If I say it should continue, I should be able to give you a very good reason why it should. And if I say it shouldn’t, I would have to give you a good reason too.

“For now things are not clear. Should the return date be shifted again, the GFA will definitely tell us something, then we can use that to know the pros and cons of each possible decision.”#

  • Coronavirus: Ghana is always reactive, we don’t plan – Nana Osei-Bonsu

Chief Executive Officer of Private Enterprises Federation (PEF), Nana Osei-Bonsu says Ghana is always reactive and we do not plan for future situations.

According to him, due to this reactiveness that is why most companies are now producing hand sanitizers of which most used to be imported.

In a television interview, Mr Osei-Bonsu said the moment the issue of the Covid-19 is gone we will move back to our old ways without planning on how to solve the areas of vulnerability in the economy.

“Our problem is that we are a reactive country we do not plan. so we react, this coronavirus, ones it moves away we will go back to game one without planning on which areas to move into that are vulnerable, what can we do to meet this vulnerability, how do we position our businesses to compete.”

“We don’t have that kind of planning, it always an ad-hoc kind of measures that we put together to salvage the situation and say goodbye and go back to our own ways,” he added.

Mr Osei-Bonsu explained that for us to be able to play a key part in the global economy and providing adequately for our people we will need proper planning.

“We need thorough planning to be able to withstand this kind of things even without the crisis.”

He proposed that African countries should make use of their economic strengths and trade among themselves. For example, Kenya producing the meat needs of some of the countries and Ghana also helping with pharmaceuticals in this regard and this will help the development of the African economy.

Mr Osei-Bonsu also said during a situation like this, countries that we import from will only export if they finish feeding their people and without that, we won’t stand the chance of survival.

He also laments the government’s inability to engage the private sector in their works, according to him they get to know about most policies when they are being undertaken by the foreigner counterparts.

But if the government includes the private sector in the policy framework formations it will help achieve more mileage.
