  • FIFA agent accuses Yussif Chibsah of cheating in Kwame Bonsu deal

Beninoir FIFA intermediary, Mr. Idowu Ismail Oluwabiyi has accused former Kotoko player and football agent Yussif Chibsa of cheating in the Kwame Bonsu deal to Esperance.

Oluwabiyi, who is the CEO of Soccer Stars Sport Limited, reveals that Chibsa got nothing in the deal because he lacked honesty and sincerity in his work.

Bonsu was transferred from Asante Kotoko to the Tunisian giants Esperance de Tunis in 2019 for a region of $150,000.

But the CAF champions League champions have refused to settle the transfer fee to Asante Kotoko citing a debt owed them by the Ghanaian club.

Idowu, claims he and his Tunisian partner Salim started the deal with Esperance but Chipsah jumped in later in an attempt to outsmart them.

“Because he never told me nor Salim [my partner in Tunisia],” he said.

“I was surprised when I heard from the video he had an agreement with Kotoko of 20 percent of the deal, which he never told me nor explained anything to Salim.

“I was surprised at his behavior,” he said.

“I don’t know about their relationship [Chibsah and Kotoko] but in life, you have to be sincere with anything you are doing.

“Now he is playing smart, did he get anything from the deal?” He quizzed.

He believes the deal could have been more beneficial if Chibsa had been honest.

“Honesty and sincerity are what matters the most in life [ transaction]. Don’t outsmart anybody in any deal,” he said.

“Yussif got nothing in deal because he tried to outsmart us but everything failed.

“Yes, he tried to outsmart both my partner and me.”

“Yes, he should have been in constant communication with us because we were the ones who started the deal.”

  • Ghanaian players at Anderlecht to give up one month’s wages

Ghanaian players at Anderlecht, Francis Amuzu and Jeremy Doku have been asked to skip one month’s salary and help save at least two-million euros as the coronavirus pandemic hits the club hard.

Anderlecht suspended the contracts of several staff members on Tuesday and chief executive officer Karel Van Eetvelt said players were being asked to show solidarity by giving up 30 days of wages.

“It will save us at least two million euros,” he told Belgian broadcaster Sporza.

The club considered also suspending the contracts of players to save costs but said it was a risky step.

“Therefore, we have chosen to ask them to hand back some of their salary.

“I am very glad there is solidarity among the players and they understand how urgent the situation is,” Van Eetvelt added, indicating that there was agreement although Belgian media reports said it was still being negotiated.

“The role of (coach) Vincent Kompany is crucial because he stands between management and the players and can appeal to them directly,” he said.

The club from the capital are Belgium’s most successful team with a record 34 domestic titles, as well as winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup and Uefa Cup, but in recent seasons have struggled.

  • NDC, PNC walk out of IPAC meeting

Some four political parties including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the People’s National Convention (PNC) walked out of an ongoing Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting.

In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the EC in line with the President’s directive on public gathering resolves to divide the parties into two different groups and thus asking one member to represent each party.

Chairman of the PNC Bernard Monah is unhappy with the EC’s arrangement and believes the EC should have chosen a bigger venue to contain all representatives.

The NDC earlier sent a request to the EC to postpone all future meetings indefinitely due to the Covid-19 outbreak but the EC says it can not grant such a request.

They also requested that if the activities of the EC is essential then a bigger venue should be chosen for such a meeting going forward.

The meeting is currently underway and the NPP, PPP and representatives from the LPG are engaging the EC.

This is not the first time the NDC has walked out of an IPAC meeting as they did the same in December last year.

The EC will also meet APC and the other less active political parties all in the name of discussing whether there should be a postponement for the April 8 Voter’s registration exercise or not.

The Electoral Commission has had to deal with firm opposition ever since the decision to compile a new Voters’ Register surfaced.

Even though there are calls by these opposition parties to rescind this decision, the EC says the compilation of the voters’ register will begin in April.

Mr Ndede Siah indicated there are still some petitions from three constituencies but he insisted the region cannot wait.

He, however, said the necessary changes will be effected depending on the decision that the Election Appeals Committee will take on the current petitions before it.

“Yes, there are some petitions making rounds. For us here in the region, we have dealt with all petitions that came before us. So, for us we are not dealing with any petition here in the region. We know there are petitions from Jomoro, Tarkwa Nsuaem, Effia and Takoradi. But those are being dealt with in Accra and I hear those petitions are being looked into.”

  • Coronavirus: Three US sailors test positive for virus on aircraft carrier

Three US sailors from the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt have been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus, the first cases reported on a US Navy ship currently on deployment, officials said Tuesday.

The three have been evacuated and all those they had come into contact with on the vessel, which has more than 5,000 personnel on board, have been quarantined, Acting Navy Secretary Thomas B. Modly told reporters.

The ship was last in port in Vietnam 15 days ago but Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Mike Gilday said it was difficult to connect the cases to a particular port visit.

“We took great precautions when the crew came back from that shore visit, and did enhanced medical screenings of the crew,” he said.

Overall, the Navy has 86 coronavirus cases, including 57 active-duty service members, he said.

Last week the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer — currently in port in San Diego according to US media — reported one of its personnel had tested “presumptive positive” for the virus.

  • Coronavirus: US Senate, W.House agree on $2 trillion rescue for US economy

The Senate and White House have reached agreement on a $2 trillion stimulus package for the US economy and millions of Americans ravaged by the coronavirus crisis, top lawmakers said early Wednesday.

“At last, we have a deal,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, hailing the massive “wartime level of investment into our nation” reached after five days of arduous and tense negotiations.

“We have a bipartisan agreement on the largest rescue package in American history,” top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer said shortly after McConnell spoke.

“So many people are being put out of work through no fault of their own. They don’t know what their future is going to be like, how are they going to pay the bills,” Schumer added.

“Well, we come to their rescue.”

The Senate and House of Representatives still need to pass the legislation before sending it to President Donald Trump for his signature.

McConnell said the Senate will vote on the measure later Wednesday.

The deal aims to buttress the teetering economy by giving roughly $2 trillion to health facilities, businesses and ordinary Americans buckling under the strain of the coronavirus pandemic.

The measure will put cash directly into the hands of Americans hard hit by the crisis, provides grants to small businesses and hundreds of billions of dollars in loans for larger corporations including airlines, and expands unemployment benefits.

It will also inject some $130 billion into what Schumer calls “a Marshall Plan for hospitals” and health care infrastructure, referring to the huge American aid program to rebuild Europe after World War II.

With viral outbreaks spreading coast to coast, hospitals have been in dire need of equipment like protective gear, intensive care beds and ventilators.

US stocks had already surged Tuesday on expectations of an agreement.

On Wednesday, Tokyo’s Nikkei closed up eight percent after the stimulus deal was reached. Oil prices rallied in Asia.

McConnell and Schumer negotiated the deal with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and other White House officials amid days of bitter partisan infighting over what to put into the final package.

Mnuchin had shuttled between the Capitol offices of the Senate’s leaders as they and staffers hammered out the language of the bill.

The agreement followed multiple failed attempts to advance a Republican-led proposal, and pressure had soared to swiftly reach a compromise that provides relief for hundreds of millions of Americans.

President Donald Trump called for an immediate resolution to the stalemate.

“Congress must approve the deal, without all of the nonsense, today,” he said Tuesday on Twitter.

“The longer it takes, the harder it will be to start up our economy. Our workers will be hurt!”

    – ‘Stop negotiating’ –

Democrats rejected the original package, arguing it put corporations ahead of workers, including health professionals on the front lines of the battle against a pandemic that has infected 55,000 and killed nearly 800 in the US alone.

As the hours ticked away Tuesday, several lawmakers voiced their anxiety.

“Pass the damn bill. Stop negotiating. Enough is enough,” a visibly angry Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said on the floor, after accusing Democrats of “nickeling and diming at a time people are dying.”

Any relief package that passes the Senate will need to clear the Democratic-led House too before going to Trump.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi unveiled a more generous, roughly $2.5 trillion counterproposal that included ambitious elements like guaranteed paid and family medical leave, student loan forgiveness and oversight of the $500 billion earmarked for corporations.

But she signalled the House may simply take up the Senate bill and try to pass it.

“Much of what we have in our bill is reflected in this supposed agreement,” Pelosi said.

According to Schumer, the compromise legislation includes an oversight mechanism for the company loans, and expanded unemployment provisions for workers laid off or sickened during the pandemic.

“Every American worker who is laid off will have their salary remunerated by the federal government, Schumer said.

Pelosi suggested the measure might even pass the House by unanimous consent.

But getting 435 lawmakers to swallow a gargantuan rescue package without debate could be an uphill proposition in a sharply divided chamber.

  • Coronavirus: Prince Charles tests positive but ‘remains in good health’

The Prince of Wales has tested positive for coronavirus, Clarence House has announced.

Prince Charles, 71, is displaying mild symptoms “but otherwise remains in good health”, a spokesman said, adding that the Duchess of Cornwall, 72, has been tested but does not have the virus.

Both Charles and Camilla are now self-isolating at Balmoral.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen last saw her son on 12 March, but also “remains in good health”.

The Queen, the palace added, “is following all the appropriate advice with regard to her welfare”.

A Clarence House statement read: “In accordance with government and medical advice, the prince and the duchess are now self-isolating at home in Scotland.

“The tests were carried out by the NHS in Aberdeenshire, where they met the criteria required for testing.

“It is not possible to ascertain from whom the prince caught the virus owing to the high number of engagements he carried out in his public role during recent weeks.”

The prince’s last public engagement was on 12 March but has been working from home over the last few days.

The Press Association news agency reported he has had a number of private meetings with Highgrove and Duchy individuals, all of whom have been made aware.

According to the latest Department of Health and Social Care figures, there are now more than 8,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK – although the actual number cases is likely to be far higher. Some 422 of those patients have died.

Tay’s body was discovered in a car park under her employers’ fourth-storey home in Beirut’s southern suburbs, between 3 and 4am on March 14.

A forensic doctor who examined her body found that her death was caused by a head injury “as a result of falling from a high place and crashing into a solid body”.

The doctor found “no marks of physical assault”. A search of Tay’s employers’ home found no signs of a struggle, and the death was being investigated as a suicide, according to a police report.

Hussein Dia, whose home Tay had lived and worked in for 10 months at the time of her death, told Al Jazeera he and his family had been sleeping when she died.

Dia said he did not know what had driven the 23-year-old to take her own life, and denied he ever physically assaulted her – “I never laid a hand on her.”

But in the week before her death, Tay sent dozens of texts and more than 40 minutes of voice messages to Canada-based activist group, This Is Lebanon, and her brother in Ghana, providing detailed accounts of recurrent physical abuse.

This Is Lebanon names and shames employers accused of maid abuse online in an attempt to resolve issues facing domestic workers on a case-by-case basis.

Human Rights Watch found in a 2010 report that Lebanon’s judiciary fails to hold employers accountable for abuses, while security agencies often do not “adequately investigate claims of violence or abuse”.

Tay told the group that Dia and Ali Kamal, the owner of the domestic worker’s agency that had brought her to Lebanon, had each beaten her twice between January 16 and March 6.

Kamal had beaten her along with one of his employees, Hussein, she said.

In the messages, Tay repeatedly expressed concerns that speaking about her ordeal could lead to more abuse, and the confiscation of her phone, which she said had taken place once before.

    She also feared much worse.

“I’m scared. I’m scared; they might kill me,” she said, in a chilling voice note to activists.

    ‘Modern-day slavery’

The manner of Tay’s death is not uncommon in Lebanon, a country with about 250,000 domestic workers. Two die each week, according to the country’s General Security intelligence agency, with many falling from high buildings during botched escape attempts, or in cases that are ruled suicides.

Domestic workers like Tay are employed under the country’s notorious kafala system, which ties their legal residence to their employer, making it very difficult for them to end their contracts.

This sponsorship system, which is in place in several Middle Eastern countries, has facilitated a range of abuse, such as non-payment of wages, a lack of rest time and days off, and physical and sexual assault.

Lebanon’s former Labour Minister Camille Abousleiman likened the system to “modern-day slavery,” and began a process of reform that is still in its early stages.

Women who come to Lebanon for domestic work from a host of Southeast Asian and African countries such as the Philippines, Nepal and Ethiopia are usually looking to support their families back home and eventually return.

Tay’s case sheds light on the type of abuse that ends with many returning to their families in coffins.

    From Accra to Beirut

A little more than 10 months before her death, Tay had been running a small noodle business in Ghana’s capital Accra, with financial help from her brother Joshua Demanya, who works as a driver.

Demanya told Al Jazeera that he had advised his sister against going to Lebanon “because there have been stories of people who go there and suffer so much they run away”.

Tay ignored her brother’s advice and arrived in Beirut on May 5 to begin working at Dia’s apartment, where he lives with his wife, Mona, and their three children.

There, she did not have her own room, instead, she slept on a sofa in the kitchen. She complained that she was overworked, had no days off and was usually only able to get to sleep at 2am and was woken up at 8am.

    ‘I should have stayed’

She quickly regretted her decision to leave Ghana. In November 2019, she texted her brother: “I should have stayed [and] continued with my business.”

In January, she told her employers that she could not work for them any more, and asked to be sent back home. They refused – “I paid $2,000, and I said, ‘Take it easy on us, we’ll let you travel after Ramadan,’” Dia recalled telling her.

That was when Tay said Dia beat her for the first time, on January 16, before taking her to Kamal’s agency, where she said Kamal and Hussein beat her.

Both denied the claims when contacted by Al Jazeera. Kamal said his agency, established in 1992, brings roughly 1,000 domestic workers into Lebanon every year. “The state would have closed us a long time ago,” if they mistreated domestic workers, he said.

Kamal informed Tay that the only way she would get back home was if she worked two more months with the Dia family, to pay for her ticket back to Ghana.

    She agreed.

But when the agreement came due in March, she contacted This Is Lebanon and said Dia was refusing to let her leave. A few days later, on March 10, she said Dia, Kamal and Hussein beat her again.

“My boss beat me mercilessly yesterday [and] dis (sic) morning he took me to the office [and] I was beaten again, this is the second time they beat me up in the office.”

Dia said he had taken Tay to the agency with the intent of letting her travel, but received a call two hours later from the agency: “We’ve worked it out, she’ll travel in July.”

Demanya said his sister had agreed “out of fear”.

‘I don’t want to die here’

Al Jazeera informed Lebanon’s Labour Ministry of Tay’s case. An adviser to Labour Minister Lamia Yammine said that the names of Tay’s employers had been noted and the ministry would be informed if they applied to be allowed to employ another domestic worker.

She said they would be permanently blacklisted “if it is proven later on that the suicide was caused by abuse”.

On March 12, Tay sent a series of pictures to her brother, appearing to show an inflamed hand, a bruise on her forearm and a scratch underneath her eye that she said were caused by the beatings.

She also shared a picture of a bloody tissue that she said was the result of a nosebleed.

Despite the abuse, she described, Tay expressed a strong will to live.

“I’m very, very weak,” she said in a voice message, describing pain in her wrist, legs and neck.

“Please, help me. Help me to go back to my country for treatment. Please, I don’t want to die here.”

  • Tokyo Olympics organisers agree one-year delay

What many already saw as the only option is now official: the organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have agreed to a one-year postponement of the event because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had agreed to the delay.

“I proposed to postpone for about a year and [IOC] president Thomas Bach responded with 100% agreement,” Abe said.

The 2020 Olympics were set to run from 24 July to 9 August.

“This is the first time an Olympic Games have been postponed – it has been cancelled in war time, but never postponed,” said BBC sports news reporter Alex Capstick.

“At the moment they are saying they want to hold it in the summer of 2021. It is a huge logistical challenge and problem to do that – it is not easy to postpone a Games.

“Is the delay long enough? We just do not know at this stage.”

  • Coronavirus: Carmakers answer pleas to make medical supplies

Car firms are answering calls from governments to help make more ventilators and face masks to help out during the coronavirus pandemic.

On Monday, Fiat began converting one of its car plants in China to start making about one million masks a month.

The carmaker wants to start production in the coming weeks, wrote its chief executive Mike Manley in an email.

Other major car firms are looking at ways they can shift manufacturing towards ventilators.

General Motors, Ford and Tesla in the US have all pledged their support to offer resources to make more ventilators, along with Japanese carmaker Nissan and Formula 1 teams in the UK.

Major car plants in the US, Europe and Asia have halted production to try to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. But they are still pledging to help make ventilators and other vital medical equipment.

US President Donald Trump tweeted on Sunday: “Ford, General Motors and Tesla are being given the go-ahead to make ventilators and other metal products, FAST! Go for it auto execs, let’s see how good you are?”

It came after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it had reduced barriers in the medical device approval process to help speed up the production of ventilators.

“Medical device makers can more easily make changes to existing products, such as changes to suppliers or materials, to help address current manufacturing limitations or supply shortages,” US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement.

“Other manufacturers, such as auto makers, can more easily repurpose production lines to help increase supply.”

However, some experts have warned that carmakers may not find it easy to switch production.

Jens Hallek, head of a ventilator manufacturer Hamilton Medical, told Wired the materials and the components needed to build a ventilator “highly specific” and require “specialized know-how”.

“These are extremely sensitive machines with not only a lot of hardware but also a lot of software. If one of the components does not work correctly, the whole machine shuts down and cannot be used anymore,” he said.

Former US Defense Department officials told the Washington Post that it could take more than a year for carmakers or aerospace factories to start making ventilators.

Meanwhile, Tesla boss Elon Musk said he had bought 1,255 ventilators from China and had them shipped to Los Angeles.

    ‘Fully focused’

Last week, Formula 1 teams in the UK said they hoped to find “a tangible outcome in the next few days” to help increase the supply of medical equipment. Working with the government and health authorities, F1 said it had experts in design, technology and production capabilities who could help out.

Nissan is part of a consortium, including sports car firm McLaren and aerospace company Meggitt, looking to develop a new medical ventilator. “We are fully focused on the project,” McLaren said in a statement, but warned of the “limited time and scale of the challenge”.

Indian billionaire Anand Mahindra said his company, The Mahindra Group, would begin work immediately to explore how its factories could make ventilators. The conglomerate is the world’s largest tractor maker and India’s biggest electric vehicle manufacturer, according its website.

  • COVID-19: Lets modify public transport policy to prevent spread Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appealed to transport operators and owners in Ghana to dialogue with the Government to find ways by which they can modify the existing public transport policy in order to support his administration’s efforts aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19 which is currently sweeping across the globe.

In an interaction with transport owners at the Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday, 24 March 2020, Nana Akufo-Addo indicated that it has become necessary for his government to engage transport owners to find ways through which their sector can make some compromises in the interest of public safety and health.

“You are responsible for moving our people around the country, private and public transport. So comes the question, how are we going to organise it in such a way that our people can still move around but do so taking into account this disease that is ravaging the world. I want us to have a conversation top see the arrangements we can put in place to achieve same,” Nana Akufo-Addo said.

Since Ghana recorded infection cases in the coronavirus pandemic, there have been calls for sweeping reforms in various sectors of the country’s economy. Prominent amongst the calls is the reduction of how many passengers public transport operators (Trotro) should seat per roll in order to observe the social distancing policy in public vehicles.

President Akufo-Addo and the transport owners after the introductory remarks moved into a closed-door session to reach a compromise over the proposals of the government.

  • U.N. seeks total ceasefire in Syria, prisoner releases, to combat coronavirus

The U.N. Special Envoy for Syria called on Tuesday for an immediate nationwide ceasefire across Syria to enable an “all-out-effort” to stamp out COVID-19.

In a statement, Geir Pedersen also appealed on humanitarian grounds for “large-scale releases of detainees and abductees” in Syria and access for medical workers to detention facilities to help ensure that adequate medical care is provided to inmates.

The spread of coronavirus to Syria brings the prospect of a deadly outbreak to a population devastated by nine years of war, with ravaged hospitals and tightly packed camps likely to accelerate infection, doctors and aid workers said on Monday.

The Assad government announced on Sunday its first case after unconfirmed reports suggested the virus had been detected but covered up, a charge official denied.

  • Dua Lipa moves album release forward after it leaks online

Dua Lipa has announced she is bringing the release date of her new album forward after it leaked online.

Future Nostalgia will come out a week early, on Friday 27 March, said the star in a tearful Instagram live.

But the Brit award-winner said she had mixed feelings about releasing new music during the coronavirus outbreak.

“I’ve been a little bit conflicted about whether it’s the right thing to do during this time because lots of people are suffering,” she said.

“I’m not sure if I’m even doing the right thing,” she continued, “but I think the thing we need the most at the moment is music, and we need joy and we need to be trying to see the light.

“I hope it makes you smile and I hope it makes you dance and I hope I make you proud.”

The star also announced the postponement of her world tour amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“I tried to hold out for as long as possible but I can see that, at the moment, things aren’t changing and for the safety of everyone around us, we really need to be careful and cautious,” said the star.

She added that new dates for the UK and European legs of the tour would be published on Tuesday, and all tickets would be honoured for the new dates.

Speaking from her home in London, the star frequently wiped away tears and apologised for getting emotional.

“I’ve been welling up a little bit, just a lot over the past couple of weeks, just with the uncertainty and everything,” she explained.

Future Nostalgia is the follow-up to Lipa’s self-titled debut album, which earned her two Brit Awards and the Grammy for best new artist.

One of 2020’s most highly-anticipated pop albums, it leaked in full over the weekend. It is not known whether this prompted the decision to move the release date forward, although it seems likely, given the potential impact of a pirated version on streams and sales.

Lipa also announced that the album’s third single Break My Heart – which samples INXS’s Need You Tonight – would premiere on Wednesday with a new video.

Government criticised After announcing the news, she spent half an hour answering questions from fans on everything from her Netflix recommendations (she went for the crime drama Ozark) to whether she has any pets (yes, two baby goats called Funky and Bam Bam).

But she also implored fans to stay indoors and help slow the spread of coronavirus, noting that her co-writer Andrew Watt had diagnosed positive for the disease.

She urged people to “go on his social media and read a little bit about how scary this is,” so they won’t be complacent about falling ill.

“You might think you’re young and you won’t be so affected by the virus [but] I know a lot of young people that do have it and have struggled with it,” said the 24-year-old.

“I don’t think we should be so small-minded. It really does affect you and we really just need to look after each other.”

  • Coronavirus: Spain transforms ice rink into makeshift mortuary to cope with deaths

Madrid’s ice rink has been hastily transformed into a makeshift mortuary as Spanish authorities scrambled on Tuesday to cope with soaring numbers of deaths and new infections from the coronavirus.

The first hearse arrived on Tuesday at Madrid’s ice rink, which was transformed into a makeshift mortuary, as Spanish authorities scrambled to deal with a rising death toll from the coronavirus.

Health workers accounted for nearly 14 percent of Spain’s total reported coronavirus cases as of Tuesday, up from 12 percent the previous day, according to data presented by health emergency chief Fernando Simon at a news conference.

Some 5,400 health care workers have been diagnosed with the virus, Simon said.

    Europe’s second-worst hit country

Spain is Europe’s second-worst hit country after Italy, with 2,696 deaths and nearly 40,000 confirmed cases. Overnight Monday, 6,600 cases of infection and more than 500 deaths were reported, the sharpest daily increase since the start of the crisis.

Authorities said facilities could not cope and agreed to transform the Palacio de Hielo mall, home to an Olympic-sized ice rink, into a morgue.

Footage from Reuters TV showed vehicles at the building cordoned off by police officers in masks.

The military disinfected 179 nursing homes on Monday and plan to clean another 96 on Tuesday, officials said.

The state prosecutor has opened an investigation after Defence Minister Margarita Robles said the army had found unattended bodies at nursing homes. She did not say what had caused their deaths.

In the southern region of Andalusia, the mayor of a small town pleaded for help after reporting 38 of 42 residents at the local nursing home had tested positive for the virus, along with 60% of staff.

“The virus doesn’t kill people … what’s killing people is the system,” Rafael Aguilera, mayor of Alcala del Valle told a news conference.

“Our seniors need a permanent solution now. We need oxygen, ambulances and hospitals,” he said in a video posted on the town’s Facebook page. “A person died in our arms because we couldn’t get hold of oxygen.”

Most Madrid, Barcelona airport terminals to be closed

While Madrid long accounted for around half of Spain’s coronavirus cases, new data published on Tuesday showed it now had just under a third of the total, in a sign that the epidemic is spreading throughout the country.

Spanish airport operator Aena said it would close most terminals at Madrid and Barcelona’s main airports as air traffic plummeted due to travel restrictions imposed to limit the spread of the virus.

Transport Minister Jose Luis Abalos said traffic through Aena’s airports had fallen by 82% since the state of emergency was enforced on March 14.

Foreign Minister ?Arancha Gonzalez Laya told Cadena Ser Catalan radio station the government was working to return Spaniards who were travelling abroad at the time of the outbreak and have struggled to fly home.

Around 1,200 people were brought back last weekend and the government is in touch with airlines for the return of Spaniards from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Peru, Indonesia and the Philippines, she said.

  • Coronavirus: Youre a murderer if you hike prices of goods Sam George fires

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram,Samuel Nartey George has hit out at shops and traders over the hike in prices of products in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak.

According to him persons who engage in such acts are greedy, unpatriotic and are no different from murderers.

The outspoken legislator said this during a presentation of some items to the Ningo-Prampram district health directorate worth GHc57,000 to help in dealing with the pandemic.

The MP donated items such as hand sanitizers, nose mask, gloves, Veronica Buckets, bowls and personal protective equipment.

“It took me four days to get the items and the prices are too exorbitant. The prices have been tripled as a result of the artificial shortage in the system. We could have provided twice the number if others have been honest with the prices they are selling the items,” Sam George said.

“If you are a producer or importer of the products do not hike the prices. If you hike the prices at this time you are being unpatriotic, you are being un-Ghanaian.

“In fact, you are a murderer because when you hike the prices, we cannot buy equipment for health workers and these health workers can get infected. You will kill a health worker simply because of your greed? So, hiking the prices now is tantamount to murder.”

Prices of products such as food and hand sanitizers have increased exponentially following the coronavirus outbreak in Ghana.

This has led to numerous complaints from Ghanaians, many of them believe traders are taking advantage of the situation to rip them off.

Meanwhile, the confirmed number of Coronavirus cases in Ghana has jumped to 53, with two deaths recorded.

  • Instagram steps up effort to curb Coronavirus disinformation

Instagram said Tuesday it was ramping up efforts to promote reliable content about the Coronavirus pandemic and stop the spread of misinformation on the image-centric social network.

The move by the Facebook-owned service with more than one billion users worldwide comes amid a scramble by social networks to deliver verified information and stamp out hoaxes.

“People who search for information related to the Coronavirus or COVID-19 on Instagram will start to see an educational message connecting them to resources from the World Health Organization and local health ministries,” Instagram said in a blog post.

“We are working quickly to make this available globally over the coming weeks.”

Instagram said it would also add “stickers” that signify verified Coronavirus information and would remove content about health claims “unless posted by a credible health organization.”

The social network also said it would offer links to donations for nonprofit organizations and offer tips for social distancing.

The initiative follows similar efforts by Facebook on its core social platform as well as on its Messenger and WhatsApp services and by other platforms such as YouTube and Twitter.

More than two billion people use at least one of Facebook’s “family” of applications daily.

  • No coronavirus talk, action; no Parliament for me Sam George to Speaker

Opposition MP Sam Nartey George has written to the Speaker, Prof Mike Oquaye saying he would be absent from the Chamber until the legislature takes concrete actions to protect lawmakers against the coronavirus and also prioritises COVID-19 discussions on the floor.

Ghana has recorded fifty-three cases so far with two deaths.

Most of the cases were imported from countries reeling under its devastation.

The Speaker recently asked some MPs to self-quarantine after returning from trips abroad where the virus had broken.

In his letter, however, the Ningo-Prampram MP said not only is Parliament not showing leadership in discussing measures to deal with the spread of the virus, but is not taking adequate steps to protect MPs against it.

“The risks we are subjecting ourselves to must be worth it. I am prepared to come to work every day from morning to night if it is about working with the Executive to deal with the pandemic at hand. I am prepared to go the extra mile if it is work that would protect the citizens and put the Executive in a better stead to protect the Republic.

“What I am not prepared to do sir, is to take risk that is needless. I am not prepared to risk exposure to the virus by coming to Parliament every day just to come and work on bills that are of no emergency nature and do not relate to the coronavirus or to come and sit and approve loans and tax waivers for private business interests, many of which are foreign.

“It is my considered belief Rt. Hon Speaker that, the august House of Parliament is failing to exercise its truly intended mandate in crisis times like this. I hold the strongest conviction that we are pandering whilst the flames that may engulf the state are being stoked.

“In the past two weeks, the House has met and deliberated on several issues. Top among them is the Imposition of Restrictions Bill 2020 and the granting and approvals of a number of commercial loan agreements. None of these deals with the coronavirus pandemic directly,” he said, adding: ““ For once, let us have our priorities right”, he wrote.

  • Iran rejects ‘foreign’ help as virus death toll nears 2,000

Iran ruled out “foreign” help on the ground to deal with the coronavirus pandemic after an offer from a France-based medical charity, as the country’s death toll from the contagion neared 2,000.

“Due to Iran’s national mobilisation against the virus and the full use of the medical capacity of the armed forces, it is not necessary for now for hospital beds to be set up by foreign forces, and their presence is ruled out,” Alireza Vahabzadeh, adviser to Iran’s health minister, said on Tuesday.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said Sunday it planned to send a nine-member team and equipment to set up a 50-bed hospital, stirring opposition from ultra-conservative circles in the Islamic Republic who alleged MSF staff would serve as “spies”.

Health ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour earlier said a record 1,762 new cases were confirmed in Iran over the past 24 hours with 24,811 people infected.

He announced 122 new deaths from the virus, raising the official toll to 1,934 in one of the world’s worst-hit countries.

MSF said on Tuesday it did not understand a decision by Iranian authorities to cancel a mission it had prearranged to set up a facility to fight coronavirus in Isfahan.

“We are surprised to learn that the deployment of our treatment unity is cancelled,” Michel-Olivier Lacharite, who is in charge of Medecins Sans Frontieres crisis response team, said in a statement.

He said the group had been given prior approval and were ready to set up the 50-bed unit at the end of the week. He said they were still ready to deploy on Iran or elsewhere on the region.

    Stay home

Iran has the fifth-highest official death toll from the coronavirus after Italy, China, the US and Spain but, unlike those countries, it has yet to impose any lockdown on its citizens.

On the contrary, the country is celebrating its two-week Persian New Year holiday when the country’s roads fill with people visiting family.

Despite the authorities’ appeals for people to stay home and the closure of shopping and leisure centres, many people have taken to the roads as usual this year.

Jahanpour, however, announced when government offices reopened on Tuesday, many civil servants will be working from home.

“Only around a third of government staff are authorised to work in the office and only for administrative tasks vital to the public,” he said, adding all offices would practise “social distancing”.

The country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has urged Iranians to follow state instructions “so that Almighty God will put an end to this calamity for the Iranian people, for all Muslim nations and for all mankind”.

    ‘Sanctions should be eased’

On Tuesday, the UN rights chief called for any sanctions imposed on countries like Iran facing the new coronavirus pandemic to be “urgently re-evaluated” to avoid pushing strained medical systems into collapse.

Iran has been under crippling US sanctions in connection with its nuclear programme.

“At this crucial time, both for global public health reasons, and to support the rights and lives of millions of people in these countries, sectoral sanctions should be eased or suspended,” UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet said.

Even before the pandemic, she pointed out that human rights reports had repeatedly emphasised the impact of sectorial sanctions on access to essential medicines and medical equipment in Iran, including respirators and protective gear for healthcare workers.

Bachelet’s office stressed more than 50 Iranian medics had died since the first COVID-19 case was detected in the country five weeks ago.

  • Coronavirus leaves English cricket facing uncertain season

Despite the early spring chill, English cricketers would normally be turning their thoughts to outdoor practice. Instead, they face a prolonged period in limbo.

The impact of the coronavirus means there will be no sound of leather on willow and no hardy supporters wrapped up in woollies braving the bitter early-season conditions.

Last week the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that no professional cricket would be played before May 28 at the earliest.

The traditional County Championship, comprising four-day first-class matches, has long had to co-exist with a range of other limited-overs, or white-ball, formats.

And this season the plan was to throw the Hundred into the mix, with a cast of high-profile overseas stars including Australia Test captain Steve Smith.

ECB chiefs were hoping the Hundred — a 100 balls-per-side tournament featuring eight new franchises, all with men’s and women’s teams — would attract a new audience.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has suggested the Championship, much less lucrative for the counties than the Twenty20 Blast, could be scrapped in an unprecedented peacetime move in response to the shortened season.

“One thing the ECB will have to do is prioritise the financial decisions in all this — Test match cricket, white-ball cricket,” he told Sky Sports.

“Maybe the purist will just have to suck it up this summer with the County Championship. These are the decisions the ECB will have to make with their stakeholders and their partners.”

The first-class Championship is the proving ground for the five-day Test format but is often played in front of sparse crowds.

Income from white-ball cricket, plus broadcast and commercial revenues from international matches helps keep the 18 first-class counties afloat.

    Short season

The immediate focus is on options for cricket in June including the three-Test series against West Indies, the Twenty20 Blast and the England Women’s schedule against India.

Pakistan are also due to play three Tests later in the English summer and Australia have been booked in for several limited-overs matches.

The ECB is modelling a series of options to start the season in June, July or August as it scrabbles for a solution to a shortened summer.

“Alongside our partners in the game, we continue to plan against a number of scenarios for the cricket season,” an ECB spokeswoman told AFP.

“It is difficult for us to be sure of what outcomes the game might be expected to deal with.

“These could include the possibility of playing matches behind closed doors, or potentially postponing or cancelling further elements of the season.”

Durham chief executive Tim Bostock said if the season were reduced to just two months, it would be better to launch the Hundred next year.

“It’s pretty clear international cricket comes first then after that it’s the (Twenty20) Blast and the Hundred. That’s where the revenue is,” Bostock told Talksport radio afte talks between the counties and the ECB.

“Tom Harrison (ECB chief executive) has been really pragmatic. I certainly get the impression if we get a two-month season the pragmatic view would be what’s the point of launching this competition now? Let’s launch it properly next year. I think we’re all on the same page.”

Reigning county champions Essex have suggested regional games between neighbouring teams as a way of keeping first-class cricket going if the usual two-division format has to be abandoned.

“Spectators and members would love that and it would also give us some four-day cricket to support England’s Test series in a very tight schedule,” Essex chief executive Derek Bowden told Sky Sports.

  • Trump wants US reopened by Easter as virus cases mount

President Donald Trump Tuesday said Tuesday he “would love to have the country opened up and just raring to go” in less than three weeks as the U.S. recorded 600 coronavirus deaths and state officials warn the worst is yet to come.

“I would love to have it open by Easter,” Trump said during a Fox News town hall meeting, The holiday is celebrated April 12 this year — 19 days from Tuesday. “I think it’s possible. Why isn’t it? We’ve never closed the country before and we’ve had some pretty bad flus and we’ve had some pretty bad viruses, and I think it’s absolutely possible.”

The U.S. economy has nosedived as the coronavirus pandemic has spread within its borders, with all three stock indices recording major losses following all-time highs earlier this year. The losses have been fueled, in large part, by efforts to limit travel and individual interactions with businesses to rein in the virus known as COVID-19.

“We have to get our country back to work,” Trump said as he braces for re-election in November’s nationwide polls.

“This cure is worse than the problem,” he added, referring to measures being implemented in states that include business closures and orders for residents to remain at home.

Trump’s assessment came just hours after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo warned virus cases in his state are “spiking” with the worst to come.

“The apex is higher than we thought, and the apex is sooner than we thought. That is a bad combination of facts,” Cuomo said during a televised news conference, warning the height of new infections could be reached in two to three weeks.

The number of hospital beds that will be required at the height of infections in New York state has been raised from 110,000 to 140,000 as the rate of new infections doubles roughly every three days, Cuomo said, warning that the virus is spreading like a “bullet train.”

“That is a dramatic increase in the rate of infection,” he warned. “We’re not slowing it and it is accelerating on its own.”

New York currently has nearly, 25,700 confirmed coronavirus, according to official state data.

That is about 10 times as much as California and Washington states, Cuomo said, imploring federal authorities to prioritize resources, including vital medical equipment like ventilators, for his state.

There are over 49,700 confirmed coronavirus cases, and 600 deaths in the U.S., according to a list being compiled by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

  • Ghanaian ‘big man’ skips quarantine & testing after returning from abroad

A prominent personality in Ghana whose identity has not been disclosed has been reported to have ‘safely’ escaped quarantine and testing after arriving from a foreign country.

A Ghanaian professor named Henry Kwasi Prempeh made the news public on his Facebook handle when he affirmed that an exceptionally credible, first-hand source revealed it to him.

In the post, Henry Kwasi Prempeh strongly states that he hopes above all things that the report that someone skips the essential protocols would be a solitary case, as grossly irresponsible and criminal as it is.

    See the full narration below:

Henry Kwasi Prempeh is Professor of Law at Seton Hall University School of Law, Newark, New Jersey, where he has taught constitutional, corporate, and international business law courses since 2003.

President Nana Akufo-Addo directed that all of Ghana’s borders be closed for two weeks as the nation fights the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The closure of the borders started from 12:00am on Sunday, March 22, 2020, after which every human who wants to enter will be quarantined and tested for the virus.

Many individuals have been reacting wildly to the professor’s post:

Felicity Nelson came out to reveal that actually, the professor’s report is not singular as there has been another:

ObaaYaa Agyapongmaa wondered why Ghanaians could have the heart to do this in these difficult times.

Abdul-Rahaman Issahaku was of the opinion that the kind of report the professor gave was so wrong and is a cause of so problems.

In other news, individuals from other countries in and out of Africa have taken to Twitter to rant on why their countries do not implement rapid activities against COVID-19 like Ghana

Comments sighted came from Namibians, Kenya, South Africans, Nigerians, and the British among others

This comes on the back of a massive fumigation exercise that was carried out in major markets in Ghana’s capital city.

  • Coronavirus: Ashley Young offers advice on avoiding disease

Former Manchester United captain and Italy-based Ashley Young has offered his advice on staying safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

The 34-year-old former England international now plays for Inter Milan in the heart of Europe’s worst-affected region.

With Italy currently suffering in the grip of the pandemic, Young outlined a series of measures those of us in the United Kingdom should follow.

He opened with: “Hi everyone, just wanted to share my thoughts given I’m currently living in Italy, the epicentre of the virus.”

Football in Italy has been suspended until at least April 3 and the country is in lockdown.

Young went on to detail how supermarkets pose the biggest threat to catching the virus, and explained the safest methods of buying and paying for food.

He advised wearing masks or scarves and gloves and explained what to do if you need to get into a lift – “stand on opposite sides and face the wall – don’t breathe outwards towards that stranger”.

The former Watford and Aston Villa player said: “This may sound harsh but treat everybody that’s not in your household as if they have the virus, you just don’t know!!!”

  • Coronavirus: First person injected with trial vaccine – WHO

The World Health Organization says that at least 20 coronavirus vaccines are currently in development in the global race for a cure.

The first human trial, by the Boston-based biotech firm Moderna, is already underway.

“Going from not even knowing that this virus was out there, which we then identified it as being a cause of infection in China in January, to have any vaccine that we can actually initiate a clinical trial in about two months is unprecedented,” said Dr Lisa Jackson, the Kaiser Permanente investigator leading the first human trial.

This extraordinary speed is thanks in large part to early Chinese efforts to sequence the genetic material of the virus that caused COVID-19.

China shared that information in early January, allowing researchers around the world to replicate the virus and study how it invades human cells and infects people.

Jennifer Haller was the first person to be injected with the trial vaccine. “Everybody is feeling so helpless right now,” Haller said. “And I realised that there was something that I could do to help, and I’m excited to be here.”

Experts say it could still take about 18 months for any potential vaccine to become available to the general public.

Last week, China also approved the start of clinical trials on a vaccine.
