  • Kevin-Prince Boateng hasn’t ruled out Ghana return

Besiktas attacker Kevin-Prince Boateng has confirmed holding a discussion with new Ghana coach CK Akonnor but says they “didn’t really speak a lot about a return to the Black Stars”.

The German-born has been out of national duties since copping an indefinite suspension for “verbally assaulting” coach James Kwasi Appiah during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday to announce his first squad since assuming duty in January, Akonnor said he “did not think Boateng wants to come and play” based on their recent discussion.

On Wednesday, Boateng commented on social media after a comment by a fan about the player not being given an opportunity by the Ghanaian media to explain his side of the story after the World Cup incident.

Previously, Boateng had maintained he was open to returning for national duty if recalled.

However, he insists he would not be apologising for his actions as he did nothing wrong.

Ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt last year, calls for his return heightened when he joined Barcelona.

After Ghana’s disappointing Round of 16 elimination from the tournament, Boateng took to social media to throw a jab at the Black Stars, tweeting, “No Prince No Party” with the hashtags #GhanaBlackStars and #Afcon.

Born to a German mother and a Ghanaian father in Berlin, the attacker switched international allegiance to represent the Black Stars at the 2010 World Cup after representing the European nation’s youth outfits.

He shortly retired from international duty after the tournament in South Africa before making a return for the 2014 World Cup.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham man has 15 caps and two goals for the four-time African champions.

  • Biden seals comeback with string of victories

Joe Biden has won six of the 14 states that voted to pick a Democratic White House candidate on Super Tuesday, in a remarkable rebound for his campaign.

The former US vice-president has swept Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia.

Left-wing Senator Bernie Sanders is expected to win Colorado and his home state of Vermont.

They lead the race to anoint a Democrat who will face President Donald Trump, a Republican, in November’s election.

Mr Biden, a moderate Democrat, and Mr Sanders, a left-winger, offer starkly different visions for America’s future.

US media are also projecting that Mr Biden has won Minnesota, a day after the Midwestern state’s senator Amy Klobuchar dropped out and endorsed him.

CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, projects Massachusetts is also leaning Mr Biden’s way, a heavy blow to his rival and the liberal state’s own Senator, Elizabeth Warren.

Buoyed by last-minute endorsements from former rivals who dropped out of the race, Mr Biden is hoping to blunt the momentum of Mr Sanders, who was the frontrunner nationally on the eve of the vote.

Mr Biden’s under-staffed and under-funded campaign has been resurgent since his commanding win in South Carolina’s primary at the weekend. It was the first time the 77-year-old had won any contest in three White House runs.

Exit poll data suggests Mr Biden has won large majorities of African-American voters, a crucial bloc for the Democratic party.

Mr Biden also appears to have won convincingly among the type of suburban voters who pollsters say have been turning away from President Donald Trump.

With all precincts reporting, Mr Biden won about 53% of the vote in Virginia, leaving Mr Sanders a distant second on 23%.

Virginia and North Carolina are so important because they are key swing states in the 2020 election.

All eyes now are on the biggest voting state of California and the second-biggest, Texas.

Mr Sanders is hoping to do well in the Golden State, a liberal behemoth, while exit poll data suggests he won 45% of the Hispanic vote in Texas, compared to 24% for Mr Biden.

Also appearing on a presidential ballot for the first time after skipping all four contests last month was Michael Bloomberg.

The former New York mayor, who has spent more than half a billion dollars of his own money, is expected to win the US territory of American Samoa.

Mr Joe Biden aims to consolidate the centrist Democratic vote by barging aside Mr Bloomberg, one of the world’s richest men.

But the billionaire wildcard lowered expectations for his performance ahead of Tuesday, indicating he plans to fight all the way to the party convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in July.

Ghana arrived in the Turkish city of Alanya last weekend and have been getting themselves in shape for the tournament.

“We watched Chile at the Women’s World Cup in France last year and so, we have a fair idea about them,” Mercy Tagoe told Goal.com ahead of today’s game.

“We have already put some tactical training sessions in place that will help us cope against them on Wednesday.

“During our training here, there were one or two things we’ve introduced that I think will be very useful for us in the match against Chile.”

“We know their style of game is quite different from ours and when they tend to increase the pace of the game, we will try to calm and slow things down.

“We have organised ourselves well and also planned to provide antidotes to every approach they want to put up against us.”

  • Yahaya Mohammed’s Black Stars call-up teaches patience and virtue

It has been a long winding road for Yahaya Mohammed as a professional footballer but at the twilight of his career he has been handed only his second call up to the Black Stars.

The 32-year -old striker who has had a nomadic career typifying his career path has now found a home at Aduana Stars where he is now the top scoring Ghanaian player in the local league.

Yahaya Mohammed is obviously talented but it has taken a lot of efforts , rejection, trials before reaching the top.

He is a player who aside from goalkeeping has played in almost every other department of the game before finally settling with playing as a striker, a role which he has executed with aplomb.

His talent has been glaring having played for the likes of Asante Kotoko, and been snapped up at a young age by OGC Nice after starring in the Toulon tournament in France in 2007.

But his career has also been fraught with controversies but no doubt he is a good player who deserves the chance to show his talent for the senior national team.

Yahaya has in the past played for the Black Stars B in the CHAN tournament in the past where he shone but he will realize that the Black Stars may be a notch higher than its local cousin but with his vast experience should the veteran be given the chance you can trust him to take it with both hands.

It has been a long time coming, a journey that has seen him experience the ambience in Northern Ghana having played for RTU, Wa All Stars, being adored at some point by the relentless Asante Kotoko supporters and carrying Amidaus Professionals and Tema Youth all on his shoulders.

Yahaya Mohammed’s call up to the Black Stars after more than a decade should tell us that patience is a virtue and hard work pays.

  • Coronavirus: World Bank pledges $12bn in emergency aid

The World Bank has committed $12bn (£9.4bn) in aid for developing countries grappling with the spread of the coronavirus.

The emergency package includes low-cost loans, grants and technical assistance.

The action comes as leaders around the world pledge to shield their countries from the economic impact of the outbreak.

It follows warnings that slowdown from the outbreak could tip countries into recession.

The aid is intended to help countries improve their public health response to the crisis, as well as work with the private sector to reduce the economic impact.

“What we’re trying to do is limit the transmission of the disease,” World Bank Group President David Malpass told the BBC.

The organisation said it would prioritise the poorest and most at-risk countries in distributing the aid to counter the effects of the virus, which has spread to more than 70 countries around the world.

Half of the package comes from the bank’s International Finance Corporation, which works with the private sector. About $4bn of the $12bn is being shifted from previously available funds.

Authorities have confirmed more than 92,000 cases of the virus worldwide of which more than 80,000 are in China. More than 3,000 people have died globally, the vast majority in China.

New infections and deaths have been declining in recent weeks in China due to draconian quarantine measures. The country on Wednesday reported 38 more deaths but a fall in fresh cases for a third consecutive day.

The worst-hit country outside China remains South Korea which on Wednesday reported 516 new confirmed infections, bringing the total to 5,328. The country’s official death toll stands at 32.

“The point is to move fast; speed is needed to save lives,” Mr Malpass said in conference with reporters. “There are scenarios where much more resources may be required. We’ll adapt our approach and resources as needed.”

The Dow Jones shed nearly 800 points on Tuesday, paring Monday’s big gains. This was despite a rare emergency move by the US Federal Reserve to cut interest rates by 0.5% amid fears over the impact of the coronavirus.

It was the biggest cut since the global financial crisis more than a decade ago.

The Ghana FA ran background checks on new China signing Mubarak Wakaso before naming him in the Black Stars squad to face Sudan in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

  • Im being persecuted for speaking my mind ACP Agordzo

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, a top police official being prosecuted for his alleged role in the destabilization plot has once again insisted that he is innocent of the charges proffered against him.

He told the Kaneshie District Court on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, that he is being prosecuted for “speaking his mind” on a Whatsapp group.

ACP Agordzo said he made a candid opinion on the dangers of political vigilantism in the Whatsapp group known as Take Action Ghana (TAG), which was widely shared.

The top police official said he gave the opinion prior to the Awayaso West Wuogon by-election violence.

During the final committal process on Tuesday, Dr. Agordzo told the court that he only acted as a citizen and not a spectator.

He insisted that his comments were situated within the context of happenings in the country.

He told the court that he was surprised that despite the abundance of evidence about his innocence on the TAG WhatsApp platform, the prosecution has charged him with abetment.

    Background

ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo was on several occasions denied bail by the High Court after his arrest over his alleged involvement and contribution to the Take Action Ghana group which the State claims had devised a detailed plot to destabilize the county.

He was charged with abetment to commit crime namely treason felony and was on remand in police custody.

He was however granted bail on January 23, 2020.

Using junior officers to prosecute me humiliating

ACP Agordzo in court also accused some police officials of wanting to humiliate him.

He said the decision to make officers of a lower rank to investigate and prosecute him is only meant to frustrate him.

According to ACP Agordzo, since the inception of the case, he has raised issues with the treatment but nothing has been done about it.

ACP Agordzo told the court that the attention of the then Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo Danquah who had jurisdiction of the case was drawn to the matter by the Inspector General of Police but she refused to make the correction.

  • Ghanaian dies in plain sight at UK detention centre

A mentally ill man died from dehydration, malnutrition and hypothermia “in plain sight” at an immigration centre, an inquest found.

Prince Kwabena Fosu’s death at 31 was partly due to “gross failure” by agencies at the centre, the jury said.

Mr Fosu was left in an isolation cell for six days without bedding while he suffered from a psychotic illness.

The Home Office said the standard of care had been “unacceptable” and new safeguarding steps had been introduced.

Coroner Chinyere Inyama said that “almost unbelievably” Mr Fosu died “in plain sight” of many people at Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre.

The jury at West London Coroner’s Court found that procedures to protect vulnerable detainees at the centre were “grossly ineffective”.

Agencies running the centre and its healthcare failed to recognise, monitor and respond to the worsening condition of someone who was unable to look after himself, they found.

Stripping the bedding and mattress from his cell without any lawful written authority was an indication of the “casual approach” of centre staff to Mr Fosu’s welfare, the jury said in its conclusions.

Speaking after the inquest, prisons and probations ombudsman Sue McAllister said it was “inhuman and degrading” for Mr Fosu to have been “segregated, living naked in a room dirty with faeces, urine and uneaten food” with no justification or review of the isolation.

Mr Fosu was seen by a cellmate to be acting oddly and talking to himself in the mirror. When approached by staff, Mr Fosu assaulted one of them and had to be restrained by at least three officers.

Labelled as being disruptive and placed in segregation, Mr Fosu had no mattress or bedding and lay naked in his cell.

The jury heard evidence that suggested he barely ate. Records showed that he drank a sip of tea and he appeared to sleep for only 45 minutes in six days.

In less than a week, he lost 18 pounds (8kg), weighing 7 stone 6 pounds (47kg) when he died.

    ‘Dirty protester’

Detention centre staff records referred to him shuffling on his bottom, talking to himself in a language people couldn’t understand, defecating in his cell and throwing food.

Staff told the inquest they thought he was protesting about his removal, but no-one asked him about his behaviour.

Because he urinated in his police cell before his transfer, he was labelled a “dirty protester”.

The inquest heard that there were five layers of subcontracting in the provision of healthcare for detainees.

The Home Office contracted the running of the centre to GEO Group UK Ltd, which contracted healthcare to Nestor Primecare Services Ltd.

It in turn contracted the recruitment of doctors to The Jersey Practice – a GP surgery in west London – which used a locum agency, Beacon Care Services Ltd.

The jury said police, Home Office staff and GEO staff all failed to spot Mr Fosu’s worsening condition and behaviour.

GEO staff showed a “casual approach” to his welfare when they removed his bedding and mattress, which contributed to his hypothermia, they concluded.

    ‘Ineffective and inadequate’

The jury said the failure of Primecare staff to effectively provide healthcare to Mr Fosu was “inexplicable”, while the GPs showed “insufficient professional curiosity”.

The Independent Monitoring Board, which was at the centre to monitor standards, was “ineffective and inadequate”, the jury also concluded.

Detention centre staff repeatedly said at the inquest that they expected healthcare staff to identify problems with detainees.

The jury heard that Steve Scott, head of residence for GEO, had told an investigation into the death that he thought at the time that Mr Fosu was a “prat”.

Mental health nurse Lesley Dube said he could not remember seeing Mr Fosu but had written in detention centre notes that he had no mental health issues.

He told the inquest he had not carried out a full mental health assessment, nor was he asked to.

During Mr Fosu’s time in isolation, he was seen by four family doctors, who were unfamiliar with all relevant detention centre rules and could not recall seeing Mr Fosu face-to-face in his cell.

Two of those doctors made no notes about him in the GP records, while the other two noted he had declined to be seen but did not assess whether he was well enough to make that decision.

The BBC has learned that three of these family doctors have since been referred to their regulator, the General Medical Council.

The jury also found that staff at Corby police station “failed to react to Mr Fosu’s challenging behaviour” and re-refer him to medical staff.

It also concluded that opportunities were missed by the station’s mental health team to fully look into Mr Fosu’s medical background and history, “resulting in an inadequate mental health assessment”.

The Home Office conceded it had failed Mr Fosu with “tragic consequences”, the jury heard.

Philip Riley, director of detention and escorting services in immigration enforcement, said at the time staff did not have sufficient training or know how to manage detainees with potentially complex mental health issues, adding that the centre was severely short-staffed.

A Home Office investigation identified learning opportunities on detainees in segregation and food and fluid refusal policies. A key failure identified had been healthcare and Home Office staff not seeing Mr Fosu in person.

Responding to the inquest’s findings, the department issued a statement in which it offered its “deepest condolences” to Mr Fosu’s family.

“The standard of care Mr Fosu received was unacceptable, and we must never allow this to happen again,” a spokesman said.

“Since Mr Fosu’s death we have increased the number of staff in immigration removal centres, improved how detainees are managed and safeguarded, including the introduction of the Adults at Risk policy and increased monitoring of vulnerable people in detention.”

The Crown Prosecution Service had decided to charge GEO Group UK Ltd and Nestor Primecare Services Ltd with breaches in health and safety legislation but the charges were dropped in 2018.

Since 2014, healthcare in removal centres has been commissioned by NHS England.

But lawyers and charities working with detainees told the BBC they were still seeing cases where centres do not recognise the seriousness of mental illnesses and failings like some of those in the case of Mr Fosu recur.

Mr Fosu’s father, Prince Charles Obeng, told the BBC it had always been his son’s wish to come to the UK.

Now he is buried in a south London cemetery alongside three others, his father was told. There is a plaque with his name marking the grave, but Mr Obeng wants the government to pay for a headstone.

“If someone is placed in an immigration centre, you have to check whether the person is eating, whether the person is sleeping, whether the person is sick – you try to take care of the person,” he told the BBC.

At his grave, Mr Obeng tells his son he prays that God will give him a better place to stay.

  • UCC identifies 24 suspects involved in Atlantic, Oguaa halls clash

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has identified twenty-four (24) out of the thirty-three (33) persons arrested over the violence that occurred between students of the Atlantic and Oguaa halls respectively, on February 22 2020.

The confirmation comes after the authorities of the University verified from their records the names of the students.

In an interview with Citi FM, today acting head of Public Affairs of the University, Kwabena Antwi Konadu said the 33 individuals are currently in the custody of the Central Regional Police Command for their involvement in the violence that occurred between the halls

”These individuals who were arrested claim they come from the Univerisity of Cape Coast and so as the case be, we had to receive official communication from the police. Management met and then we detailed the dean of students and other officers to get in touch which the police which they did”.

”So officially we were given the list and particulars of the people who claimed they were part of UCC. After going through the students’ system we can confirm that by our investigation 24 of them have registration numbers and their particulars tally with what we have in the system. So we can assume that these 24 are students of the University of Cape Coast and the 9 as we speak haven’t been able to identify their particulars”.

This follows violent exchanges between students of the Oguaa and the Atlantic halls of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) recently which led to the destruction of properties leaving left four persons injured.

However, it was unclear what triggered the fight but an eye witness said it started after some students of Atlantic hall (ATL) beat up another from Casely Hayford Hall (CASFORD).

The CASFORD student had come to visit a friend at Oguaa Hall, which was marking its Hall Week celebration.

The incident sparked a free-for-all fight, leading to the vandalisation of properties.

  • Coronavirus: FTSE 100 surges after US stocks bounce back

European markets have climbed for a second day on hopes that governments and central banks will intervene to tackle the economic hit of coronavirus.

The FTSE 100 climbed more than 2% in London and there were similar gains on other European markets.

The Dow Jones in New York surged by 5.1% on Monday, although Japanese shares closed 1.2% lower on Tuesday.

The rebounds follow the worst week for major stock markets since the 2008 financial crisis.

The G7 is expected to release a statement later today or tomorrow as policymakers struggle to respond to the global spread of the virus, but there are concerns that it may not mention any new government spending or coordinated interest rate cuts.
‘A fiscal version of the Avengers’

Connor Campbell, financial analyst at Spreadex, likened the group to a “fiscal version of the Avengers” superheroes. He said even that the announcement of the G7 action plan “was enough to point markets in the right direction”.

Investors have been worried about the impact of the coronavirus as it spreads outside of China. Already, the outbreak has led to travel restrictions, manufacturing shortages and reduced shopper demand in some countries.

On Tuesday, Australia’s central bank cut interest rates to record lows, in what is expected to be the first in a spate of stimulus measures around the world to fight the economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

Reserve Bank of Australia governor Philip Lowe said: “The board took this decision to support the economy as it responds to the global coronavirus outbreak.”

US President Donald Trump seized on the opportunity to encourage the US Federal Reserve to “cut rate big”.

    ‘Closely monitoring’

The Bank of England said on Monday that it continued to monitor developments and is assessing its potential impacts on the global and UK economies and financial systems.

“The Bank is working closely with HM Treasury and the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) – as well as our international partners – to ensure all necessary steps are taken to protect financial and monetary stability,” a Bank spokesman said.

The European Central Bank said it was “closely monitoring developments and their implications for the economy, medium-term inflation and the transmission of our monetary policy. We stand ready to take appropriate and targeted measures, as necessary and commensurate with the underlying risks.”

The US Federal Reserve put out a similar statement last week.

The comments come as economic groups revise growth forecasts to account for the virus.

On Monday, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) also said it expected growth of just 2.4% in 2020, down from 2.9% in November and warned that a longer “more intensive” outbreak could halve growth to 1.5%.

  • EU leaders visit Greece as migrant stand-off with Turkey continues

Top European officials are visiting Greece’s border with Turkey to assess the new crisis over refugees and migrants trying to enter the EU.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council chief Charles Michel and European Parliament speaker David Sassoli arrived on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is hoping for support for Greece’s tough line on defending its borders.

Turkey lifted controls on migrants exiting for the EU on Friday.

It took the decision after suffering a heavy military loss in north-west Syria, where it has been trying to create a safe area to resettle millions of Syrian refugees it took in during the ongoing civil war.

At least 24,000 people have been stopped from crossing the border from Turkey since Saturday, according to Greek government figures.

Austrian Prime Minister Sebastian Kurz has accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of using the migrants as pawns. He also announced that his government had strengthened Austria’s borders to make sure the mass influx of refugees and migrants of 2015 was not repeated.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell is due to visit Ankara to discuss Turkey’s decision to drop restrictions on migrants, abandoning a deal struck in 2016.

What is the situation at the border?

Monday night was quiet in comparison with events over the weekend when thousands of migrants clashed with Greek security forces, a Greek army officer told Reuters news agency near the Kastanies border crossing.

“There were only a few attempts today [by migrants to cross the border],” he said. “Let’s hope they get the message.”

Some migrants including women and children could be seen in custody after being detained on the Greek side of the land border.

On the Turkish side, migrants who had been waiting around the border city of Edirne were again moving towards the frontier.

Several hundred migrants crossed to Greece from Turkey by boat in recent days but people were deterred by choppy seas on Tuesday, a police source told Reuters.

A young boy died when a boat capsized off the Greek island of Lesbos on Monday, Greek police say. It was the first reported fatality since Turkey opened its border.

The three EU leaders arrived at the Kastanies border crossing.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said earlier he expected a message of support.

“Greece cannot be blackmailed in this way, and it will not be blackmailed,” he told people in the town of Alexandroupolis.

“I think the fact that today we have, will have the presence of all the leadership of Europe here is the support of this policy because I will never tire of reminding everyone and the Europeans that the borders of Greece are also the borders of Europe.”

Mr. Mitsotakis tweeted photos of himself meeting Greek security forces.

  • Russia’s Putin wants traditional marriage and God in constitution

Russian President Vladimir Putin wants marriage to be defined as the union of a man and woman in a revised constitution, ruling out gay marriage.

It is among several constitutional amendments proposed by Mr Putin, which are set to be put to a public vote.

Critics see the proposals as a move by Mr Putin to keep a hold on power after his presidential term ends in 2024.

The package includes a proclamation of Russians’ faith in God and a ban on giving away any Russian territory.

The territorial amendment would strengthen Russia’s hold on Crimea – a Ukrainian region it annexed in 2014 – and the Kuril Islands, disputed with Japan since World War Two, according to Vladimir Mashkov, a renowned actor-director involved in drafting the new constitution.

Mr Putin also proposed an amendment on “historical truth”, to protect “the great achievement of the people in their defence of the Fatherland”.

He has railed against what he sees as foreign attempts to diminish the enormous sacrifice made by the USSR in World War Two. The defeat of Nazi Germany cost an estimated 27 million Soviet lives.

Mr Putin is in his fourth presidential term; he has been the dominant figure in Russian politics for 20 years. His presidency has been marked by a revival of Soviet-era symbols, conservative values and the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church.

He surprised the nation in January with plans for constitutional changes that include transferring some powers from the presidency to parliament.

While most Russians identify as Orthodox Christians, the state is officially secular. The current constitution dates from 1993, when then President Boris Yeltsin was embracing Western democracy and capitalism.

Mr Putin’s drive against Western liberalism has included a controversial ban on disseminating “gay propaganda” among young Russians. The ban – condemned by many liberals and the European Court of Human Rights – has been used to harass gay rights activists.

The constitutional reform bill was approved by the Russian parliament’s lower house – the State Duma – in January, and Mr Putin’s amendments were introduced in time for a second reading next week. The Russian legislature is dominated by Putin supporters.

A public vote on the constitutional revision is scheduled for 22 April, but before then it has to get final approval from parliament and the Constitutional Court.

A Russian political analyst, Konstantin Kalachev, told BBC Russian that the proposals were “a mixed bag”. “It turns out that our forefathers gave us faith in God and the ideas of communism,” he commented, but added: “Putin is a mirror for the majority of Russians”.

Many of the amendments were submitted to Mr Putin by prominent social and cultural figures appointed to a constitutional working group.

Political scientist Grigory Golosov criticised the changes as “political”. “The constitution we have indicates that the state should be free of ideology. So I think these changes are inappropriate.”

  • Teacher Unions call on Akufo-Addo to intervene in passage of Pre-Tertiary Education Bill

Teacher Unions in the Western Region are calling on President Akufo-Addo to intervene in the Pre-Tertiary Education Bill 2019 that is currently before the Education Committee of Parliament.

The Unions which comprises of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Ghana National Association of National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH) contend that the passage of the bill will be unfavourable to teachers and administrators at the Pre-tertiary level.

They want the government to consider a proper consultation with them before its passage or entirely withdraw the bill until due diligence of its potential impact is conducted.

Per the bill, the proposed structure of the management of education would be such that senior high schools would be run by the Regional Coordinating Councils while basic schools would be run by the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies whereas technical and vocational schools would be under a Director-General, independent of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Addressing the media today, Regional Chairman of GNAT Rev Charles A Carly called on the President to intervene and prevent the passage of the bill into law

”The National Leadership of the Teacher Unions under the Ghana Education Service held a joint press conference on Friday, February 14, 2020, at the GNAT headquarters to call on Parliament to humbly suspend the discussions of the bills on pre-tertiary education Act 2019 and sending them copies to study, analyse and make the necessary input into them”.

”We the teacher unions in the Western and Western North Region are of the considered opinion that education is the key to our national development and any attempt to introduce new policies and legislations in education must be done with the active and express involvement of teachers who are the key stakeholders. We call on the President of the Republic to intervene so we have a smooth labour front in the education sector because the bills in their current form will distort the modest gains made in education”

He further stated that: ”If this bill is allowed to go through its current state, it has the tendency to break the unified educational arrangement we have in now.”

  • Opuni trial judge who openly campaigned for Akufo-Addo 2020 elevated to Supreme Court

Justice Clemence Jackson Honyenuga, who is sitting on the case involving the former Ghana Cocoa Board boss, Dr. Stephen Opuni and businessman, Seidu Agongo and who declared his support for President Akufo-Addo, during his tour of the Oti and Volta regions has been elevated to the Supreme court, MyNewsGH.com has filed.

He along with one other Appeals Court judge Justice Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu and renowned lawyer Yoni Kulendi will replace three justices who are on retirement or are due for retirement this year from the Apex court.

Justice Honyenuga who serves as a Court of Appeal judge presiding over the case as additional High Court Judge, had declared support for President Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in his capacity as the Paramount Chief of the Nyagbo Traditional Area, Torgbui Ashui Nyagasi V.

Many argued that his professional duties as a judge, which requires him to be neutral and apolitical barred him from making the declaration he made.

The Graphic newspaper had quoted him as calling on Ghanaians to give President Akufo-Addo, another term to implement his vision for the country.

“We wish to congratulate you for the excellent manner you are governing this dear country of ours, it is our hope that with your vision and the gains made in your first term, Ghanaians may consider giving you another four years,” he had said.

The Opuni case has also been cited as a “political” case.

It is among the cases the Akufo-Addo government is prosecuting against appointees of John Dramani Mahama, as a testimony of the corruption which existed under the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

  • Mills-Mahama administration refusing to co-operate in Airbus investigation – Govt

The Deputy Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame is lamenting the slow pace of investigation into the Airbus bribery scandal.

He revealed that officials of the erstwhile Mills-Mahama administration are not co-operating in the ongoing investigation despite the various roles they played in the transaction.

President Akufo-Addo recently wrote to the Special Prosecutor to commence investigations into the matter when the scandal first broke.

Mr Dame is however surprised that the people involved have not come clean to Ghanaians about the roles they played, he made this known at a High-Level Anti-Graft meeting today in Accra.

“There has been some collaboration between other countries in respect to this Airbus issue and I even alluded to the fact that Ghana sits at the heart of it so we are doing all we can to get to the bottom.

He also spoke to Joy News where he said: “The identities of the government officials mentioned in the scandal is quite clear. One important lesson to be drawn from the scandal is the prosecution process. There is a reluctance from certain persons to admit the fact. The key government actors who engaged in the transaction are still around and I insist there was a Vice President who later on transformed into a President and he is around and still campaigning to hold public office and I am saying in accordance to accountability even if he was not involved, he ought to open up to the full fact because the transition occurred under his tenure”.

    Airbus Scandal

Aircraft manufacturing giant, Airbus, has been in the news within the past few days after it agreed on a legal settlement of about £3 billion over its involvement in an alleged bribery scandal between 2009 and 2015 in various markets including Ghana.

The scandal has caused a political storm in Ghana over accusations of Airbus payments to a relative of a government official in connection with the purchase of military planes.

The UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO) stated that the said agent had no aerospace experience, having previously worked in football merchandising and as a facilities manager.

It did not say what the agent, who had been helped by two unnamed British television actors, did with the money.

  • Fuel prices to remain unchanged – IES

Price of petroleum products on the local market will remain largely stable at least for the next two weeks.

According to the Institute of Energy Security (IES), this is due to the relative stable prices of petrol and diesel on the international market, coupled with the 1.32% upward reverse in price of International Benchmark – Brent Crude.

However, it said competition between Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to control and gain more market shares may result in selling price of fuel falling marginally within the first Pricing-window of March 2020.

Oil prices reverse upward briefly within the second Pricing-window under review as implied demand destruction was less than expected.

However, oil prices fell on Friday, 21st of February, as OPEC decided not to move its March meeting forward while Russia indicated that it currently has no intentions to cut production further. Brent crude rallied marginally by 1.32% from $55.89 per barrel to close at $56.63 per barrel on average terms during the period under review.

From the Foreign Exchange market, the cedi appreciated by 4.98% against the U.S. dollar, trading at an average price of Gh¢5.34 to the U.S. Dollar over the period under review; from a previous rate of GH¢5.62 recorded in the first Pricing-window of February, 2020.

Meanwhile, fuel prices at the pump experienced reduction across some major OMCs including Goil, Total Ghana and Zen Petroleum in the Pricing-window under review as projected by the IES.

While Goil and Total Ghana shaved-off 1.28% and 0.91% for petrol and diesel, Zen Petroleum gave away a whopping 6% for petrol and diesel to sell at GH¢4.92 per litre; thus, making Zen petroleum the OMC with the least selling price.

However, the second Pricing-window of February 2020 saw some OMCs maintaining their prices at the pump to record a national average price of GH¢5.41 and Gh¢5.40 for petrol and diesel respectively.

The spread of the coronavirus , known as COVID-19, has prompted worldwide concern as public health officials attempt to control the outbreak.

There is currently no vaccine for coronavirus. Washing your hands thoroughly is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of getting sick.

According to the USDA, 97 percent of Americans don’t wash their hands properly.

Fear of contracting coronavirus has taken over America. There are more than 80 confirmed cases in the United States and no vaccine in sight. But washing your hands can keep you healthy and is one of the best ways to prevent the coronavirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention .

You probably think you know how to wash your hands, since you do it hopefully multiple times a day. But it turns out, 97 percent of Americans wash incorrectly, according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture.

The USDA found that when it comes to hand washing, people make two common mistakes: not washing long enough , and drying their hands on a dirty towel .

To reduce the spread of germs, disease, and illness (like the flu or coronavirus) here’s a quick how-to on proper hand washing, courtesy of the CDC .

    • Wet hands with clean water.
    • Rub hands together to create a lather. Be sure to lather the back of your hands and between your fingers. Don’t forget to clean under your nails as bacteria like E. coli can hide in the crevices.
    • Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, which is like singing the happy birthday song twice.
    • Rinse your hands with clean water.
    • Dry hands on a clean towel, which means it’s been used no more than three times before getting tossed in the hamper.

Chances are, you’re probably skimping out on how often you wash, too. The CDC recommends washing:

    • Before, during and after touching food
    • Before mealtime
    • Before and after interacting with someone who is sick
    • Before and after bandaging wounds
    • Post sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose
    • After using the bathroom
    • If you’ve changed diapers
    • Whenever you’ve played with your pup or other animals
    • After touching garbage

Aside from washing after going to the bathroom, be sure to give your hands a good scrub when you get home, too.

  • Coronavirus to cost world tourism at least $22 billion

The deadly coronavirus epidemic will cost world tourism at least US$22 billion owing to a drop in spending by Chinese tourists, the head of the World Travel and Tourism Council had said.

The COVID-19 epidemic has killed over 3,000 people, mostly in China – where it first emerged in December – and infected more than 90,000 in over 45 countries.

“It is too soon to know but the WTTC has made a preliminary calculation in collaboration with (a research firm) Oxford Economics which estimates that the crisis will cost the sector at least $22 billion,” Gloria Guevara told El Mundo daily.

“This calculation is based on the experience of previous crises, such as SARS or H1N1, and is based on losses deriving from Chinese tourists who have not been travelling in recent weeks,” she said.

“The Chinese are the tourists who spend most when they travel.”

The loss figure, which equates to about €20.2 billion, is the most optimistic scenario envisaged by the study which was published on February 11 by Oxford Economics, taking the hypothesis of a 7.0% drop in overseas trips by Chinese nationals.

But the losses could more than double, reaching as much as $49 billion if the crisis lasts as long as the SARS outbreak, which erupted in November 2002 and was brought under control in July 2003.

Five African countries have so far recorded the coronavirus.

They include Senegal, Egypt and Nigeria.

  • Mosquito repellents not fire extinguishers Fire officer cautions drivers

A Safety Officer at the Ashaiman Fire Station, Rolling Tengay, has admonished drivers against the use of mosquito repellents as fire extinguishers.

According to him, some commercial drivers have resorted to the use of mosquito repellents and “unmatched fire extinguishers” in their vehicles instead of standard and prescribed fire extinguishers.

Giving the caution as a guest at the official out-dooring of the Ashaiman GPRTU task-force over the weekend, the fire officer said, fire extinguishers are first gadgets meant to combat fires before the arrival of the GNFS personnel in the event of a vehicle catching fire, hence must not be taken for granted.

Reacting to claims that the police sometimes remove safety pins of fire extinguishers when drivers provoke them or to find out whether they are intact, Mr. Tengay advised his fellow security men to stop the practice since the fire extinguisher becomes useless and ineffective as soon the safety pin is detached.

Safety Officer Rolling Tengay further advised drivers to use fire extinguishers meant for a particular vehicle and make sure they are always filled with the chemical to help them quench fire while they call for fire personnel, depending on the intensity of the fire.

  • Ghana Health Service allays fears of a suspected coronavirus case in Ashanti Region

The Ghana Health Service has allayed fears that there is a suspected case of coronavirus in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect showed symptoms of the virus in Kumasi over the weekend shortly after his return from Germany where over a hundred cases have been recorded.

But an emergency test conducted on him tested negatives which brings the number of suspected cases in Ghana to 30 all testing negative according to the Ghana Health Service.

Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Badu Sarkodie confirmed to Joy News.

“There was a suspected case of coronavirus in the Ashanti Region during the weekend, quickly test were taken and within a matter of 12 hours, we had a report indicating it was negative meaning we do not have any case of coronavirus in Ghana. The total number of cases tested come close to 30 and all are negative””Some people were picked at the airport with symptoms that looked like the virus, we took them in and run a test on them and all turned out to be negative”.

He also confirmed that even though the person has died it is not yet known what caused the death.

“The priority here was the coronavirus which could be a public issue, we tested and he proved negative, as at now, the cause of his death is not yet known”.

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye has, however, said calls for President Akufo-Addo to be quarantine is not necessary.

There are calls from some legislatures for the President to undergo detailed checks and quarantine upon return from his trip abroad in the wake of the outbreak of the Coronavirus in Europe.

The number of people killed worldwide by the coronavirus has exceeded 3,000, as China reported 42 more deaths. More than 90% of the total deaths are in Hubei, the Chinese province where the virus emerged late last year.

But there have also been deaths in 10 other countries, including more than 50 in Iran and more than 30 in Italy.

Worldwide, there have been almost 90,000 confirmed cases, with the numbers outside China growing faster than inside China.

But most patients have only mild symptoms, the World Health Organization said on Sunday, and the death rate appears to be between 2% and 5%.

  • Sey elections: Two presidential aspirants disqualified over CGPA shortfalls

The forthcoming Junior Common Room elections for residents of the Frances Elizabeth Sey Hall at the University of Ghana will see the team of Dennis Kwasi Kumi and Mathias Susu Assey contest unopposed in the Presidential race as two other aspirants were disqualified.

The team of Daniel Obeng and Samuel Ofosu Amos, and Crispus Ohene Ankomah and Patrick Kwame Eyiah were both eliminated from the race by the vetting committee as their CGPA could not meet the required 3.0.

Stephan Osei Bonsu, the presidential aspirant who, barely two hours to the deadline, shocked his running mate with a resignation letter and opted for the office of Organizing Secretary, thereby submitting forms in that regard, was also disqualified over CGPA shortfalls.

He was the only aspirant gunning for the Organizing Secretary office.

His disqualification will necessitate the reopening of another window to allow other persons to pick nomination forms to contest just that office.

Meanwhile, UniversNews gathers that it is unlikely that the disqualified aspirants will seek for redress.

The 2019/2020 Sey JCR elections is scheduled to be held later this month.

It seeks to elect new JCR officers for the 2020/2021 academic year.

  • Daniel Sturridge ‘devastated’ by four-month ban for breaching betting rules

Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge says he is “devastated” after being banned from football for four months for breaching betting rules.

He was originally given a six-week ban last summer, four of them suspended, but the FA appealed against the findings of an independent commission.

An appeal board also doubled the 30-year-old’s fine to £150,000.

Sturridge’s contract with Turkish side Trabzonspor had been terminated by mutual agreement earlier on Monday.

In a video posted on his YouTube account Sturridge said it had been “a crazy few days” after the “disappointing and upsetting” decision ended his season.

He added: “I just want to say it’s been a very long and drawn out process over the last couple of years and difficult to concentrate on my football.

“I’m going to continue to campaign for professional footballers to be able to speak to their families and close friends freely, without the real risk of being charged.

“I feel the betting companies and the practice and process of people placing bets on players moving clubs has to be stopped.”

He thanked Trabzonspor but added he felt “uncomfortable” continuing to receive wages from the club due to being unable to “contribute”.

Sturridge had faced various charges alleging he passed on inside information over a potential transfer in January 2018.

A statement from the FA said the appeal board had ruled the commission “misapplied rules in relation to the use of inside information and made findings of fact which could not be sustained”.

As a result, the board found proven two further charges that had originally been dismissed.

Liverpool announced in June 2019 that Sturridge – who scored eight times in 26 appearances for England – would be leaving the club that summer at the end of his contract.

He went on to score seven goals in 16 appearances for six-time Turkish champions Trabzonspor.

The former Manchester City and Chelsea forward’s most recent England appearance came as a substitute in a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania in October 2017.

Sturridge has been suspended from all football and football-related activity until the end of 17 June.

The commission found he had instructed his brother Leon to bet on a possible move to Spanish side Sevilla, and that he had given him inside information during the January 2018 transfer window.

Sturridge said the FA’s case was “overblown and misconceived” and that he gave an innocent explanation for text messages to his brother.

Submissions on his behalf said he did not have the type of personality that is drawn to adrenaline or the risk of wrongdoing and had no real interest in gambling.

  • Everton manager Ancelotti charged with misconduct by the FA

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has been charged with misconduct by the FA after being sent off following the draw with Manchester United.

The Italian approached referee Chris Kavanagh at the final whistle after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s late goal was ruled out for offside.

Ancelotti will not get a touchline ban but will be fined £8,000 if he accepts the charge before Thursday’s deadline.

That figure would rise to £12,000 if an appeal is made and is unsuccessful.

The 60-year-old said after the 1-1 draw at Goodison Park that he was not disrespectful to Kavanagh, whose initial decision to award the stoppage-time goal was reversed by the video assistant referee because Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson was lying offside in front of United goalkeeper David de Gea.

Ancelotti said he also had a subsequent, private conversation in which he spoke to the referee “calmly”.

Although the Toffees boss was the first manager in the Premier League to be shown a red card, the rule was only introduced this season by the International Football Association Board to improve the visibility of such actions. It was already possible for managers to be dismissed.

The FA also ran a trial period last season.

  • We will deal ruthlessly with recalcitrant drivers who end lives of our officers – Police Service

The Police Service has assured its staff that it will deal with recalcitrant drivers who end the lives of Police Officers during the discharge of their duties by prosecuting them to serve as a deterrent to others.

This comes after a commercial minibus driver, identified as Osei Bonsu killed a policeman by running his vehicle over him near the Trinity Theological Seminary in Accra last Friday in an attempt to escape arrest over an alleged traffic offence.

Reacting to the incident on Starr FM today, the Eastern Regional Police PRO, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh said the Police will ensure the safety of its men during the of their duties

”We are going to ensure in the country that no officer dies in performing his lawful duties. The police will stop at nothing to ensure that recalcitrant drivers will end the life of police officers performing their lawful duties, either they are stopped or they are made to face the full rigours of the law if they are arrested. And we are sending this strong warning that we will go all out to ensure that our men are protected and alive before they can protect the lives of other persons. So we will not countenance anybody at all who will decide to take the law into their own hands and kill our men who are performing their lawful duties and ensure that the laws take it course”.

However, the driver involved in the killing of the Police Officer has been declared wanted by the Accra Regional Police Command.

On Friday, after the driver run over the Police Officer, in an attempt to avoid arrest he allegedly fled the scene with the vehicle when he was approached by the police.

Two policemen from Madina Unit of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD), Sergeant Moses Appiah and a colleague, Corporal Joshua Azure pursued the driver of the Ford vehicle from the main Legon-Madina road and eventually caught up with him on the Trinity Theological Seminary route.

The two policemen got out of their vehicle and tried to stop the driver from moving his vehicle further according to some eyewitnesses, but the driver in an attempt to drive away, hit Sergeant Moses Appiah and as he tried to drive away, dragged the knocked down Sergeant Appiah under the vehicle.

The badly injured Sergeant Appiah was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for emergency treatment but he was pronounced dead later.

Following that, the body was taken to the Police Hospital Mortuary.

  • Abortion access will not expand in Colombia, court rules

Colombia’s Constitutional Court shut down a landmark abortion case on Monday that divided the South American country and offered what experts called an opportunity to “set a precedent for the region”.

For 14 years, Colombian law allowed for abortions under three circumstances: if the mother’s life was endangered, if the pregnancy was a product of rape or if the fetus is fatally deformed.

A case, brought forward by a hardline anti-abortion rights activist, sought to eliminate those exceptions, but instead offered the court an opening to permit abortions during the first months of pregnancy.

On Monday afternoon, the magistrates announced in a 6-3 decision that it would maintain the status quo, a move hailed both as a disappointment and a victory for women’s rights activists.

“The court is missing an opportunity to expand abortion access,” said Paula Avila-Guillen, director of Latin America Initiatives for the Women’s Equality Center. “However, it’s a verification that we’re not moving backward.”

The case divided the South American country. A February poll by Colombian magazine Semana suggested that nearly 70 percent of the country was opposed to the legalisation of abortion in the first four months of a pregnancy, but abortion rights and anti-abortion rights protests have mounted leading up to Monday’s decision.

As the court deliberated, protesters on both sides faced off on the street outside the court building. An invisible ideological wall seemed to run along the city’s main street, dividing the two groups who screamed at each other.

Protesters with green pro-choice bandanas screamed, “Yes, yes, yes for abortion”, while groups with blue anti-abortion rights bandanas screamed back, “Yes, yes, yes, for life.”

The controversial case was brought to the table by hardline anti-abortion rights lawyer Natalia Bernal in 2019. Bernal asked for a total ban on abortion after a 22-year-old woman in the western Catholic city of Popayan had an abortion at seven months after a psychological assessment noted that she was suffering from severe mental issues like depression as a result of the pregnancy.

“My theory is that if abortion rights are increased, there will be many more women who are raped because the rapist knows that the State will permit women to get rid of the consequences of the rape,” Bernal told local media Red+ in late 2019 without providing any evidence to back up her claim.

But instead, the legal challenge put on the table the possibility of legalisation.

The case came after a wave of feminist movements swept across the region. Of the 33 countries that make up Latin America and the Caribbean, only Uruguay, Cuba and Guayana allow for abortion procedures without a woman needing to prove her pregnancy endangers her life or that she was raped. In Argentina, a similar conversation is playing out as congressional legislators are set to consider a bill that would legalise abortion.

Despite the shifts, much of the largely Catholic country remains strongly against abortion rights, including Colombian President Ivan Duque who called any move away from the three exceptions “very tough”.

“I’m pro-life. I believe life starts at conception,” he said in February.

    Legal red tape

In 2006, Colombia’s Constitutional Court overturned an all-out ban on abortion and, on paper, Colombia’s laws appear more liberal than neighbouring countries. But the legal red tape associated with the laws make access to abortion in many cases virtually impossible, and women seeking abortions are often asked for proof of rape beyond police reports.

Other healthcare providers refuse to perform the abortion or create elongated approval processes for women who are often “running against time” to receive the care, said Cristina Rosero, a lawyer at the Bogota-based women’s advocacy group, Women’s Link.

We’re “seeing health professionals just … putting up illegal obstacles, and they’re not being held accountable for it,” Rosero told Al Jazeera. “That creates this impunity feeling that lets them not comply with the law because they don’t feel there is going to be any consequence.”

In 13 years, 300 legal complaints have been filed from women who say they were denied a legal abortion, yet only three of those cases ended in sanctions of healthcare providers, according to Women’s Link.

In rural zones of the country also often lack sufficient medical supplies or training to perform such procedures, so such care becomes inaccessible to large swaths of the population.

“This is about privilege,” said Avila-Guillen, who recalled that while growing up in a rural area, friends would have to travel more than 350km (217 miles) by bus to get medical attention in Bogota.

An estimated 400,400 abortions are performed each year in Colombia, according to US-based reproductive rights organisation Guttmacher Institute. In 2018, private abortion provider Profamilia said 16,878 legal abortions were performed legally.

Despite that being a massive jump in the number of legal procedures from 2008 – when Guttmacher documented 322 legal procedures performed in medical clinics – it means the vast majority of abortions performed in the country are still clandestine.

Almost 15 percent of maternal deaths across the world are a product of botched clandestine abortions, and women living in rural zones are more likely to experience medical complications than those in cities.

While the court decision did little to change the legal status quo in the South American country, Rosero said the case is still an important step for groups to open new challenges to abortion law in the predominately Catholic country because the court refused to acknowledge Bernal’s challenge.

It also, she said, launched a public conversation that is only expected to continue.

“It opens the doors for advances which haven’t happened in 14 years,” she said. “This is a huge step because it means that the public debate is going forward and the people are ready for a conversation.”

  • We have no evidence chloroquine can treat coronavirus Dr. Sarkodie

Dr. Badu Sarkodie, the Director of Public Health, Ghana Health Service (GHS), says they have no evidence that Chloroquine Phosphate 250mg is an effective treatment of the flu-like coronavirus (COVID-19).

He was reacting to claims on social media that Chloroquine Phosphate 250mg had been found by French and Chinese doctors to be effective for treatment of the virus.

Dr. Sarkodie in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said although the claim sounded promising, the GHS had not had any efficacy clinical trial to confirm that.

They could therefore not make any recommendation for the use of the drug to treat the virus. “I cannot dispute the claim so the person saying this should provide more information because we have not sighted any publication to this effect,” he added.

Coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan in Hubei Province, China, is now spreading much more rapidly outside China than within the country, leading the world into uncharted territory.

The World Health Organization (WHO), however, said on Monday that the outbreak could still be contained.

Almost nine times as many cases had been reported in the past 24 hours beyond China than inside, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, adding that, the risk of coronavirus spreading was now very high at a “global level”.

He said outbreaks in South Korea, Italy, Iran and Japan were the greatest concern, but that there were evidence surveillance methods were working in South Korea, the worst affected country outside China, and the epidemic could be contained there.

“We are in uncharted territory – we have never seen before a respiratory pathogen that is capable of community transmission but at the same time which can also be contained with the right measures,” he told a news briefing in Geneva.

Deaths globally have now passed 3,000. Most are in China but in the past day, there were nine times more new infections outside China than inside. There are now almost 90,000 cases worldwide in about 70 countries, although the vast majority – just under 90% – remain in China, and most of those are in Hubei province, where the virus originated late last year.

Of the nearly 8,800 cases outside China, 81% are in four countries – Iran, South Korea, Italy and Japan.

Dr. Sarkodie advised Ghanaians to adhere to the preventive measures for their safety -regularly and thoroughly wash hands with soap and water, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer and maintain at least one and half metres (5 feet) distance between oneself and anyone, coughing or sneezing.

  • Sogakope murder: Police picking up credible info to arrest culprits MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of South Tongu, Emmanuel Louis Agamah has said the Distric Security Council (DISEC) is picking up credible information that will lead to the arrest of the killers of the Assemblyman for Sogakope South Electoral Area, Mr Marcus Mawutor Adzahli.

Mr Agamah has, therefore, called for calm within the area as the Police conducts further investigations into the matter.

Speaking in an interview with Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Tuesday, 3 March 2020, Mr Agamah said: “There is hope that the culprits will be arrested. We are picking up credible information and so I will call for calm as the Police conducts further investigations into the matter.”

Residents in Sogakope in the Volta Region on Monday, 2 March 2020 stormed the local police station in anger over the killing of the Assemblyman.

They were joined in solidarity by some residents of Sokpe, a neighbouring town, to express their anger at the police for not responding swiftly to distress calls by the Assemblyman before his murder.

The police had to fire warning shots to control and keep the crowd at bay.

Prior to storming the police station, the protesters blocked the Aflao-Accra road at the end of the Lower Volta bridge at Sogakope just as they did on Sunday.
