  • New Zealand cops probe threat to terror attack mosque

New Zealand police said Tuesday they were investigating a threat made this week against one of the Christchurch mosques where 51 Muslim worshippers were killed in a mass shooting a year ago.

Amid plans to mark the one-year anniversary of the March 15 massacre, police said the threat to Christchurch’s Al Noor mosque was posted this week on encrypted messaging app Telegram.

Reports said the message showed a man in a balaclava sitting in a car outside the mosque accompanied by threatening text and a gun emoji.

“We have strong leads that we’re following up and I’m confident that we will establish who this person is,” Canterbury police commander superintendent John Price told Radio New Zealand, adding, “We’re very close”.

Al Noor was one of two mosques targeted by a self-avowed white supremacist last year in what Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described as “an unprecedented act of terror (that) shattered our small country”.

The timing of the latest threat comes at a sensitive time as planning is underway for a memorial service in Christchurch to mark the anniversary.

Details of the service at the city’s Hagley Park have not yet been finalised but Ardern is set to attend after gaining international praise for her compassionate handling of the attacks.

Ardern said Tuesday that she found it hard to believe that New Zealand’s Muslim community was still being subjected to such hatred.

“I will be amongst many New Zealanders who will be devastated to see that as we head towards the one-year anniversary of a most horrific terror attack on the Muslim community, that they should then be the target of this kind of activity,” she told reporters.

Price said he was encouraged that a member of the public had reported the threat, saying that people were acting to stamp out such online activity when they saw it.

“That’s the way we’ll conquer this issue in our society, is by everyone standing up and saying this is not OK,” he said.

The alleged mosque attacker Brenton Tarrant, an Australian national, is due to go on trial on June 2 facing terrorism charges plus 51 counts of murder and 40 of attempted murder over the killings.

  • Coronavirus: Four more deaths in Washington state

Four more people have died in a coronavirus outbreak in Washington state, bringing the total fatalities there to six.

These are the first deaths due to Covid-19 on US soil. Washington declared a state of emergency over the weekend.

Five of the deaths occurred in King County, whose main city is Seattle.

There are now 18 confirmed cases in the region, and there are growing fears it may spread further.

Researchers who studied the first two Washington deaths had said the virus may have been spreading there for weeks, and suggested that up to 1,500 people may have been infected.

What’s the latest from Washington state?

Kathy Lofy, Washington state’s health officer, said cases were confined to two counties – King and Snohomish – and the virus was “actively” spreading there. She added it was possible the virus was spreading elsewhere.

Eight of the 14 cases in King County, and four of the deaths, are linked to one care facility. Most of those who died were elderly or had underlying health conditions.

King County is to buy a hotel so it can isolate the growing number of patients in the region. More schools in the Seattle area closed on Monday.

Dr Jeff Duchin, the chief health officer for the Seattle and King County Public Health agency, said there would be no wider school closures at this stage, nor would major events be cancelled. But, he said, the number of cases is expected to increase.

“We are taking this situation extremely seriously,” he said.

What’s happening elsewhere in the US?

The weekend brought a sharp rise in the number of cases, raising concerns. There are now 91 confirmed cases across the country and while some patients are believed to have travelled to high-risk countries, others are thought to have contracted the virus within the US.

Officials on the US West Coast – in Washington, California and Oregon – have expressed concerns about infections appearing in patients who had not visited an area where there was an outbreak or been in contact with anyone who had.

The federal government has admitted to problems with its diagnostic testing amid the rise in cases. A top federal scientist has raised concerns about a possible contamination in an Atlanta, Georgia, lab where the government had made test kits for the virus, Axios reports.

  • I am crazy like our fans – K.P Boateng

Ghana forward Kevin Prince Boateng says he is as ‘crazy’ as the Besiktas fans but in a positive way.

The on-loan Fiorentina forward is having a good start to his career in Turkey after netting twice in four games for the Black and Whites.

Even though he did not score in his sides 2-1 win at Alanyaspor last Friday, the 32-year old celebrated wildly with the traveling fans and after the game he said in an interview he is enjoying his time at the club.

“Like our fans, I’m positively crazy,” he told the club’s Magazine.

Boateng’s performance has seen the Turkish super lig side open up negotiations with the Ghanaian as they look to tie him down to a permanent deal.

According to Turkish sports portal Fotomac, the club want to hand the ex-AC Milan player a two year deal.

  • Sokratis, Nketiah send Arsenal to quarters

Goals from Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Eddie Nketiah either side of half-time sent Arsenal through to the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 win at Portsmouth.

Arsenal were fortunate to go into the break a goal up, and it came from an unlikely source as Sokratis controlled a volley into the bottom corner from Reiss Nelson’s dangerous cross (45+4).

Nelson created the second shortly after the break, taking on his man on the right before delivering for Nketiah to bundle home from close range (51).

Arsenal are now in the quarter-finals for the first time in three seasons, with the last-eight draw taking place on Wednesday evening.

Arsenal made nine changes in total, including giving January capture Pablo Mari a debut at centre-back, but Portsmouth themselves also rung the changes, making six having played on Friday evening.

Kenny Jackett’s side started the stronger at Fratton Park, forcing Arsenal into some desperate last-ditch defending, and registering eight shots on the opposition goal in the first half, but without testing Emiliano Martinez.

Lucas Torreira was taken off on a stretcher with a worrying ankle injury, replaced by Dani Ceballos, and Arsenal should have taken the lead with Gabriele Martinelli struck over at close range from a good Nelson centre.

Nelson tried again during first-half stoppage time from the right flank, and this time it resulted in the opener as his superb, whipped delivery was met by Sokratis 10 yards out, the defender placing a fine volley into the bottom right corner.

Nelson was causing problems again six minutes into the second half, easing his way past Steve Seddon before crossing for Nketiah, who netted at the second attempt after not quite connecting with his first effort.

Arsenal loosened up further and looked for a third, but goalkeeper Alex Bass did superbly to tip over Bukayo Saka’s left-footed swinging effort.

At the end of the game, Portsmouth were singing about their own trip to Wembley for the Leasing.com Trophy final against Salford in April, but for Arsenal, this competition represents their only chance for silverware this season as Mikel Arteta looks to bring success back to the Emirates.

  • I’d be an idiot to doubt my boys – Klopp

Jurgen Klopp admits there was no point ranting and raving at his Liverpool players just to make himself feel better after they lost their unbeaten Premier League record at Watford.

The shock 3-0 reverse at Vicarage Road ended a 44-match undefeated run in the top flight and also prevented the Reds setting a new Premier League record of 19 successive victories.

But, instead of laying into his players after their poorest performance in over a year, Klopp gave them a calculated assessment of where they had gone wrong after re-watching the match on his return home on Saturday as he appreciates what they have achieved this season.

Klopp said he would be an “idiot” if he now began to doubt their character and no longer trust them.

“It can happen that I get angry with the players, but I didn’t get angry with the players in this meeting,” he said.

“From a common-sense point of view, if I go in that meeting and shout at them like they have lost the last 10 games in a row because of a bad attitude, that would be really strange.

“I am not interested that after the meeting I feel better. I am interested in the boys getting the right information and it can be more emotional – I would not say angry – or less emotional.

“If you need to analyse, you analyse and analysis is not really emotional. It is looking at the facts and we were just not good enough. That is the easy answer.”

After two defeats in three matches, having also lost in the Champions League to Atletico Madrid, the FA Cup trip to Chelsea takes on extra significance for the Reds in terms of regaining the momentum they had before the mid-season break.

The message was not lost on the players and Klopp is confident they are ready to, in one of his favourite phrases, “strike back”.

“There was no applause. They don’t come to me and say, ‘That was a great meeting boss’,” he added.

“Of course, they want to strike back. This is an exceptional group of players. The situation we are in is special. Who can give us advice?

“We came through an incredible long period with incredible performances, sensational football, wonderful goals, great success – until this point.

“I am not a little bit in doubt about the character of the boys and I would be a real idiot if I would be to be honest because they deserve my trust, my faith and they don’t lose it after a bad game.”

  • Foden hoping to earn England call-up

Phil Foden hopes his impressive display in Manchester City’s Carabao Cup final win can help earn him an England call-up.

The 19-year-old midfielder was named man of the match after playing a starring role in City’s 2-1 defeat of Aston Villa at Wembley on Sunday.

The highly-rated Foden, an U17 World Cup winner in 2017, has been talked of as a future England international for some time but his lack of appearances for City has so far prevented him from earning a call-up.

Even Sunday’s outing was only his 10th start of the season but, with England boss Southgate at the game, he chose the right occasion to shine.

Foden, a current U21 international, said: “I want to be there, obviously, but it’s very difficult with the players that we have there.

“Hopefully Gareth was watching and hopefully he saw things that he liked.

“So that is all I can do – just show what I can do every time I play and see where it takes me. We haven’t spoken much but he has said in a few places that he is keeping a close eye on me.”

Foden has been gradually eased into the City first-team squad by manager Pep Guardiola over the last three seasons.

Guardiola – the two-time Champions League-winning manager of a Barcelona side that included Lionel Messi – said last summer that Foden was the best player he had ever seen.

This season, Guardiola has repeatedly said City will not need to sign a player to replace the departing David Silva at the end of the season because Foden will be ready to step up.

“If the manager says something like that, it gives you a lot of belief and courage to keep playing and doing well and, with the manager behind you, he can only help you and make you better,” added Foden.

“He believes in me and that gives me a lot of confidence on the pitch, and he is always trying to help me each day and it’s just a pleasure for me to be a part of it.”

Foden believes he has been given the perfect grounding in City’s star-studded squad.

“You can get much better playing and learning from players like that every day,” he said.

“Playing on the same pitch as them at Wembley is a moment that I will never forget and they make your job easier.

“When I first [joined the squad], I found it quite difficult to keep up with the speed and the physicality, and I was getting quite frustrated at times, but as a few months went on, I started getting the hang of it. That’s when I felt comfortable and I felt like I belonged there.

“Not many young players like myself could play in a team like this, so it just shows the belief the manager and the players have in me, which is really nice.”

Foden, who has mostly played centrally, also showed his versatility at Wembley by playing on the right. Among a number of eye-catching contributions, he set up the first goal for Sergio Aguero with a fine header.

He said: “I enjoyed it because I got a lot of time on the ball and a lot of room to do things. It always helps if you can play in many positions.”

  • Accra-Tema Motorway gets new streetlights

The government has begun fixing and replacing non-functional streetlights on the Accra-Tema Motorway.

The exercise which started from the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange is currently at Sidalco

This has brought relief to pedestrians who usually stand on the roadsides to pick vehicles home at night after work.

The 19-kilometres Motorway, which was built during the era of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1965to link Tema and Accra, has been without streetlights for ages.

In June 2002, there was a report by the Ghana News Agency that the government was to spend GHC 1.95 million to light the motorway.

The project was to commemorate the country’s Golden Jubilee birthday in 2007.

However, the project had some challenges that delayed its completion.
When he assumed office, the government of the late President Atta Mills commenced the motorway streetlights project, but it could not be completed.

Criminals along the motorway stole most of the electrical cables, while irresponsible and reckless drivers knocked down most of the poles.

The efforts by the present government to illuminate the motorway, a few commuters told Accra file, should not be a nine-day wonder.

  • China reports rise in imported virus cases

China reported on Tuesday an increase in cases of the new coronavirus coming from abroad, as the country where the disease first emerged now worries about importing infections.

In total there have been 13 confirmed cases of the virus being imported into the mainland — all Chinese nationals returning from overseas.

More than 3,100 people have died and over 90,000 have been infected worldwide.

The vast majority of cases are in China but South Korea, Italy and Iran have emerged as the countries with the most cases outside the epicentre.

Eight Chinese nationals who worked in the same restaurant in Italy’s northern Lombardy region have tested positive for the virus in eastern Zhejiang province, according to the local government.

They flew back into China from Italy last week.

There have also been four confirmed cases travelling back from Iran — two in Beijing and two in the northern Ningxia region — plus one case in the southern city of Shenzhen who had travelled from the UK via Hong Kong.

Beijing has been implementing a series of measures to try and prevent its containment efforts being undone by imported cases carried into the country.

Hundreds of passengers from South Korea arriving in eastern China were placed in isolation after people on two flights were discovered to have fevers last week.

No infections have been confirmed so far.

Those arriving in the capital city from virus-hit areas are being made to self-quarantine for 14 days.

On Tuesday officials in the city of Dandong, which borders North Korea, announced that everyone coming into the city from overseas will have to be tested for the coronavirus.

  • Akonnor to maintain Andre Ayew as Black Stars captain

Ghana coach Charles Akonnor will maintain Andre Ayew as captain of the Black Stars as he prepares to name his squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan one of the key decisions today.

The 30-year-old will remain his leadership role during the reign of the new gaffer.

The Swansea City forward took the armband from iconic striker Asamoah Gyan prior to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt under dramatic circumstances.

Ayew is hugely respected by his peers and enjoyed the responsibility as captain.

He led Ghana during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after a disappointing round of 16 exit from the competition.

Andre has been phenomenal for Swansea City despite their recent struggles

  • CK Akonnor to indicate Black Stars direction with maiden squad today

Ghana coach Charles Akonnor will indicate his squad direction as he readies to name his final squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan on Tuesday.

The quality of players called-up will largely determine his direction since taking full charge of the team.

The former Ghana international is expected to defend his selection to the local media at the plush Accra City Hotel today.

GHANAsoccernet.com understands players who have enjoyed regular playing time both home and abroad will be given a look-in.

It remains to be seen if there will be a clear departure from his former boss Kwesi Appiah who preferred foreign-based players largely.

Young players who are making their mark abroad and those with Ghanaian roots could be considered in his first call-up.

Its also unclear if he will revert to calling-up old foxes or focus on the emerging talents to steer his reign.

Tuesday’s announcement will give a clear indication the path the new gaffer want to chart as he takes full charge of the Ghanaian national team for the first time in his coaching career.

There have been mounting pressure to call-up home-based players who have distinguished themselves so far in the league.

Medeama goalkeeper Eric Ofori Antwi has been tipped to make the squad after guiding the Mauve and Yellows to the summit of the Ghana Premier League.

There could also be places for Aduana Stars leading marksman Yahaya Mohammed as well as on loan Asante Kotoko midfielder Justice Blay.

  • Twitter staff told to work from home over coronavirus fears

Twitter staff across the world were asked to work from home starting Monday in an effort to stop the spread of the deadly new coronavirus epidemic.

The outbreak has spread across the world since emerging in central China late last year, killing more than 3,100 people, infecting over 90,000, and prompting a wave of travel restrictions.

The social media platform’s decision to ask its staff to avoid the office follows similar requests by governments in virus hotspots.

“We are strongly encouraging all employees globally to work from home if they’re able,” Twitter human resources chief Jennifer Christie said in a Monday blog post.

“Our goal is to lower the probability of the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus for us — and the world around us.”

Working from home will be mandatory for employees at the company’s South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan offices, Christie said.

South Korea has recorded nearly 5,000 confirmed COVID-19 infections — the largest number outside mainland China — along with 28 deaths. More than half of the cases have been linked to the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, a secretive religious group often described as a cult.

Japan’s government has urged the closure of schools nationwide and employers to give their staff permission to work remotely.

Most civil servants in Hong Kong returned to work on Monday after they were asked to work from home for a month. The financial hub has recorded 100 cases of the infection.

Twitter had already announced the suspension of “non-critical” business travel and events last week

  • Video: Your beauty wont last forever, think about your future Prophet Kumchacha to slay queens

For the first time in the past 5 years, born Nicholas Osei affectionately called Prophet Kumchacha has said something worth publishing and sharing.

The above-mentioned acclaimed man of God has advised “slay queens” in Ghana or better still young ladies not to depend on their beauty and men for survival, but rather work towards their future.

To his best knowledge, men are only interested in them now because of their beauty which will eventually fade. Speaking on UTV he said some ladies do not think about their future because men are rushing them now.

Adding that the reason why men rush young ladies is that at their age everything about them is attractive. He said these same men will leave when they realize your beauty is fading and you are no more attractive.

Kumchacha therefore, advised young ladies to think about their future and work towards it rather than relying on their beauty.

  • Coronavirus casts potential cloud over Euro 2020 with 100 days to go

This Wednesday marks 100 days to go until the start of Euro 2020, but as preparations are fine-tuned for the first European Championship to be played across the continent, the coronavirus outbreak could pose a potentially serious threat to the tournament itself.

The decision to stage the second 24-team Euros in 12 different cities in 12 different nations, from as far apart as Baku to Dublin and Glasgow to Rome, was certainly an ambitious move.

UEFA say all venues and transport links are ready, that demand for tickets is through the roof, and there are no obvious security worries. Except for the coronavirus outbreak, with its unknown potential consequences, which could cast a shadow over the entire event.

Most matches in Italy’s Serie A were called off at the weekend with the country the hardest hit by the outbreak in Europe, with 52 deaths and more than 2,000 cases as of Monday.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Switzerland — with 24 confirmed cases — on Monday announced the postponement of all games in its top two divisions until the end of March.

“The health of persons is much more important than any football game,” insisted FIFA president Gianni Infantino at the weekend.

“I think we all hope that this can be contained, but of course we will take advice, but it’s got to be health first, sport second,” Football Association of Wales chief executive Jonathan Ford told the UK’s Press Association. Wales are due to play Italy in Rome at the Euros.

The coronavirus crisis was raised at an executive committee meeting of European football’s governing body in Amsterdam on Monday, but UEFA is remaining calm over the possible repercussions for Euro 2020.

“UEFA is in touch with the relevant international and local authorities regarding the Coronavirus and its development,” it told AFP.

“For the moment, there is no need to change anything in the planned timetable. The issue will be kept under constant scrutiny.”

The opening match is due to take place in Rome on Friday, June 12, with Italy facing Turkey.

UEFA says it has received more than 28 million requests for match tickets, a figure it says is more than double the number for Euro 2016.

However, if the outbreak continues to spread, some fans may think twice about travelling to games, even if everything is ready to welcome them.

Of the 12 venues, only the Puskas Arena in Budapest has been newly built, the stadium in the Hungarian capital officially opening in November. Wembley in London will be the venue for the semi-finals and final.

    – How the favourites are shaping up –

On the field, the carrot of playing in the final on home turf is dangling over England, with Gareth Southgate’s side among the tournament favourites.

They were hugely impressive in qualifying, but since then injuries and a loss of form to key players have raised some doubts.

Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford could miss the rest of the season with their clubs due to long-term hamstring and back injuries respectively, while Raheem Sterling has yet to score in 2020.

Southgate, who will attend the draw for the next UEFA Nations League in Amsterdam on Tuesday, also has a big call to make in goal with Everton’s Jordan Pickford struggling for form.

One of the few leading nations who will not host matches, World Cup holders France also have problems, with Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante’s season notably ravaged by injuries.

France are in the same group as Germany, who are hoping to bounce back from their 2018 World Cup disaster with a squad that has been considerably freshened up.

While Spain look to rediscover the form that allowed them to win back to back Euros in 2008 and 2012, holders Portugal will hope to get one last song out of the 35-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo.

Meanwhile, Belgium and a rejuvenated Netherlands — who will play group games in Amsterdam — may fancy their chances of going all the way.

Of the 24 qualifying spots, the last four will be decided by the Nations League play-offs later this month.

  • Eddie Nketiah buzzing after scoring for Arsenal against Portsmouth

English-born Ghanaian striker Edward Nketiah could not hide his joy after registering his name on the score sheet for Arsenal in their 2-0 win against Portsmouth in the FA Cup on Monday night.

Portsmouth played well in the first half at Fratton Park but fell to Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ volley from Reiss Nelson’s cross just before the break.

Nketiah bundled home from close range to wrap up the victory six minutes after the restart.

“The goals came at the right time, we knew we were in for a hard game, knew the first goal would settle things.”

“Then we kept pressing and going for the third. It was a great performance from the team.”

“The manager said to keep going and up our intensity in the second half. We played quicker, gaps appeared and that’s when we played out best football.”

He added: “They made it hard for us and they came out fast. We fought and battled well and to win 2-0 is a great achievement. All the young boys – and the senior players – did really well and took their opportunities.”

“We take all competitions very seriously. At the moment we are getting chances and we are all eager to take them – we want to do as well as we can.”

  • GNPC buys SFO’s silence

One of the anti-corruption agencies in Ghana, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has been caught in a web of conflicting interests, as it has emerged that it is busily receiving funding from the country’s oil exploration company which EOCO is ordinarily supposed to be investigating.

Besides receiving its statutory payments from the Consolidated Fund, EOCO has since 2018 gotten over Two Million Cedis (GHS 2 million) from the country’s national oil exploration firm, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

Leaked documents from GNPC indicates that the organisation paid GHS 1 million to EOCO in August 2018, paid them GHS 550,000 in October 2019 and after a December 2019 and January 2020 board meetings, decided to increase the funds allocated to the anti-corruption agency, by paying another GHS 1 million.

This consistent approval of funds to EOCO has raised eyebrows. The motivation to pay out such huge amounts of moneys to an independent watchdog organization has been described as improper and unholy. The Public Interest and Accountability Committee last year complained when the GHS 550,000 that GNPC paid to EOCO came into the public domain.

During that discussion, the no-nonsense Auditor General of the Republic, Mr Daniel Domelevo frowned on the payment and wondered about the impartiality with which EOCO can investigate GNPC management and ensure accountability, and prove it’s independence.

The Chairman of GNPC Board of Directors who happens to be the Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Freddy Blay was a subject of a petition that the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) announced it was sending to EOCO, over some financial arrangements he the Chairman had made to buy buses for his party and boost his campaign fortunes.

It was in that same year of 2018 that EOCO received the first payment of GHS 1 million from GNPC. Therefore tongues are wagging as to whether there is no correlation between the supposed EOCO investigations into the finances of the Chairman and the newly found use for the country’s oil revenues.

Interestingly, Mr Freddy Blay in November 2019, went on Asempa FM to describe the leaked 2019 GHS 550,000 payment to EOCO, as improper and not well thought through. He went further to say that he has taken steps to stop the cheque from going to EOCO.

The latest revelations from GNPC, however, tells a different story.

The files from the petroleum corporation indicate that prior to the October 2019 payment of GHS 550,000 to EOCO, Chairman Freddy Blay’s GNPC board had paid an amount of GHS 1 million to the same EOCO.

Again, the leaked documents indicate that besides the GHS 550,000 payment which leaked in November 2019, a fresh amount of GHS 1 million has in January, 2020 been paid to EOCO, contrary to Chairman Freddy Blay’s claims of stopping the payment to EOCO.

  • Its time for Africa to take the lead Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has observed that the time is ripe for Africa to take the lead in generating for herself the additional funds needed to advance, as the continent is well-resourced in natural and human resources.

Africa, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said, must build robust institutions to protect herself, strengthen the capacity of her geological services to determine exactly what and how much resources the continent has, and establish legal departments in governments that will ensure African countries get their due in contracts that they sign.

Delivering a speech at Chatham House last Thursday, on the theme “Financing for Sustainable Development of Africa”, President Akufo-Addo noted that the global development finance architecture created almost four score years ago by multilateral and development finance institutions, is not fit for the scale of work needed to transform the continent into an Africa Beyond Aid.

“In the process, we can draw on the expertise of private practitioners. We must strengthen our tax authorities to counter tax avoidance practices such as base erosion and profit shifting by multinationals. In other words, we must entrench the rule of law. The plethora of unbalanced contracts, with their pernicious effects, has to cease, if we are to realise our vision of rapid socio-economic development,” he added.

Whilst striving for increased domestic revenue mobilisation, and leveraging on technology to strengthen the performance of revenue institutions, the President stressed that “we must also be mindful how the revenues are spent and accounted for. The institution of transparent budget and expenditure management systems, that allocate resources wisely to agreed national priorities, and that ably monitor their implementation, is, therefore, of the utmost importance.”

Africa, President Akufo-Addo said, must invest in education and emphasise the importance of exposing African youth to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) because that is where the skills needed for the modern economy can be developed.

  • NPP vetting: Weija-Gbawe candidate Patrick Baidoo disqualified

One of the key contenders of the NPP Weija-Gbawe Constituency Parliamentary Primaries, Patrick Kwabena Ampong Baidoo popularly known as ‘Blue Boy’, has been disqualified at vetting.

Blue Boy who is seeking to unseat the incumbent MP Tina Gifty Naa Ayeley Mensah, was disqualified on Monday during the vetting at the NPP Greater Accra Regional Office at Dzorwulu.

The reason cited for his disqualification was that he “allegedly told Regional Secretary that he is in charge during the confirmation of MCE for Weija-Gbawe.”

He, has however, in a statement called for cool heads among his supporters as he prepares to petition NPP national leadership.

This comes after several machinations to frustrate his efforts to contest the sitting MP in the April 25th Primaries.

    Here is the full statement:

PATRICK BAIDOO CALLS FOR CALM AMONG SUPPORTERS AMIDST VETTING DISQUALIFICATION

… “You allegedly told Regional Secretary that You Are In Charge” during the confirmation of MCE for Weija Gbawe so you are disqualified and not eligible to contest”

On March 2, 2020, Hon. Patrick Baidoo (aka BlueBoy), a former Presiding Member (PM) of the Ga South and Weija Gbawe Municipal Assemblies respectively who had filed his nomination to contest the Weija Gbawe Constituency Parliamentary Primaries did avail himself for vetting.

Present were also some Weija Gbawe Constituency Executives.

    Issues emanating from the vetting:

The Committee Chairman Nana Obiri Boahen alleged that during the confirmation of Hon. Patrick Kumor the current Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly, he Hon. Patrick Baidoo had told the Regional Secretary Mr. Odarlai Parker and The Regional Chairman Mr. Divine Agorhom that he was in-charge, an allegation the former PM denied vehemently of having said at any material time during the MCE confirmation process.

Based on this unsubstantiated allegation, the Vetting Committee Chairman Nana Obiri Boahen told the Parliamentary Hopeful Patrick Baidoo that he is disqualified and not eligible to contest the upcoming Primaries slated for April 25, 2020.

As a true party person Patrick Baidoo will follow the laid down New Patriotic Party procedures, rules and regulations guiding the upcoming Parliamentary Primaries.

Workers of COCOBOD who were retrenched in 1993 and 1994 without compensation after government restructured the company today boycotted a validation exercise by COCOBOD in Koforidua.

The aggrieved retrenched workers alleged that COCOBOD has deviated from the agreed requirements and modalities for the validation exercise which could lead to disqualification of many of its members some of whom are deceased but represented by their children and spouses.

The exercise was marred by anger and raining of curses on the officials for allegedly attempting to shortchange them.

The Supreme Court ruled on behalf of the affected farmers in 2005. COCOBOD later appealed for review but the case was withdrawn for out of court settlement.

The CEO of COCOBOD, Joseph Boahene Adu, reportedly instituted a committee to reach an amicable settlement with the members of the Association of Retrenched Staff of Ghana COCOBOD.

After reaching an agreement with the Association for payment of the packages, it was also agreed for a validation exercise to be conducted. The Validation team on Monday, March 2, 2020, started work at COCOBOD office in Koforidua but events turned chaotic after many members of the Association failed to provide the tall list of documents demanded by the validation team.

The frustrated former staff of COCOBOD mostly aged began to agitate forcing their leadership to call for a total boycott of the exercise.

  • Pete Buttigieg drops out of Democratic race for White House

Pete Buttigieg, the former Indiana mayor who made an ambitious run for president, has announced he is ending his campaign for the White House.

The 38-year-old became the first openly gay presidential candidate from a major party when he announced he was running for the Democratic nomination.

But despite a successful start, his campaign lost momentum in recent weeks.

His decision to drop outcomes ahead of a key day on Tuesday in the Democratic race to take on Trump.

Fourteen states will vote on Super Tuesday, by the end of which staunch left-winger Bernie Sanders could have an unbeatable lead and be a step closer to the nomination.

His departure leaves six Democrats still in the running – Joe Biden, Mr Sanders, Michael Bloomberg, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar and Tulsi Gabbard.

Speaking to supporters in his hometown of South Bend, Indiana, Mr Buttigieg stressed the values he said his campaign had hoped to promote.

“And so we must recognise that at this point in the race, the best way to keep faith with those goals and ideals is to step aside and help bring our party and our nation together,” he said. “So tonight I am making the difficult decision to suspend my campaign for the presidency.”

He pledged he would do “everything in my power” to ensure a Democratic win in November’s election.

Mr Buttigieg surprisingly, and narrowly, won the first event of the primary season, the caucuses in Iowa on 3 February. But he failed to repeat that success and win the delegates needed to make him the front- runner and later confirm his nomination. He finished a distant fourth in South Carolina on Saturday.

Mr Biden praised Mr Buttigieg’s campaigning effort in a tweet.

Mr Buttigieg’s husband, Chasten, also addressed crowds of supporters in South Bend, saying: “About a year and a half ago, my husband came home from work and told me – well he asked me: ‘What do you think about running for president?’ And I laughed! Not at him, but at life.

“Life gave me some interesting experiences, on my way to find Pete. After falling in love with Pete, Pete got me to believe in myself… and I told Pete to run [for office] because I knew there were other kids sitting out there in this country who needed to believe in themselves, too.”

How Buttigieg set his sights on the White House It was one of the least likely runs for the presidency in years: Mr Buttigieg’s only political experience had been as the centrist mayor of the 306th largest city in the US, South Bend, Indiana between 2012 and January this year.

Before then, he had served as a US Navy intelligence officer and in the Afghan war.

He was the first millennial to run for the White House, and would have been the youngest president to take office had he won.

The son of a Maltese immigrant, he had long been rumoured as a possible candidate in the 2020 election. But after announcing his candidacy in April last year, he was able to break through a crowded group to become one of the most recognisable faces in the campaign.

In that time, he raised more than $82m (£64m), according to the Federal Election Commission, one of the highest totals of all the candidates.

In recent weeks, his sexuality had been highlighted as an issue by critics – conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh asked if voters would pick a man “kissing his husband on stage”.

Mr. Buttigieg – pronounced Boot-Edge-Edge – came out as gay aged 33 and married his husband Chasten in June 2018.

He also struggled to build support among African-American voters, a point emphasized by his poor showing in South Carolina.

His record as mayor came under fire among minority voters – he had fired South Bend’s first African American police chief and was criticized over how he handled the case of a white police officer who shot dead a black man last year.

  • Judge Judy to end in 2021 after 25 years

Judy Sheindlin, one of US daytime TV’s biggest stars, has revealed her long-running CBS show Judge Judy will end next year after 25 seasons.

In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, to be aired on Monday, the 77-year-old said she would launch a new show on another, unnamed network in 2022.

“I’ve had a 25-year marriage with CBS and it’s been successful,” Sheindlin said in a clip released online.

CBS has yet to comment on the multiple Emmy winner’s departure.

According to Judy Sheindlin, CBS is seeking to utilise repeats of Judge Judy, instead of commissioning further series.

She explained: “Now, [CBS] have 25 years of reruns, so what they decided to do was to sell a couple of years worth of reruns.”

“But,” she added: “I’m not tired.”

Sheindlin said her desire to continue working led her to the decision to launch a new show, titled Judy Justice. But that will not air on CBS.

She said the new show “would be going elsewhere” while reruns of her old shows go into syndication.

Sheindlin said next year would mark the “silver anniversary” of her Judge Judy show and that its final season would be “the best ever”.

“Judge Judy, you’ll be able to see next year – a full year, all new shows,” she confirmed.

“The following couple of years, you should be able to catch all the reruns that CBS has sold to the stations that are currently carrying Judge Judy, and Judy Justice will be going elsewhere – isn’t that fun?”

According to Variety, Sheindlin sold her show’s library to CBS in 2017 for around $100 million (£78.25 million).

Since 1996, millions of viewers have seen Sheindlin pass judgment on real-life small claims cases.

More than 5,000 episodes of the show have been broadcast since its inception and Sheindlin is now the highest-paid personality on US television.

ITV’s popular daytime show Judge Rinder follows a similar format, with criminal barrister Robert Rinder holding court.

  • Songs which featured Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy werent snubbed Charterhouse explains

Charterhouse, the organizers of Vodafone Ghana Music Awards have explained why songs featuring Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy were not nominated in the 2020 edition.

A list of songs featuring these two musicians which were not nominated by the organizers was published by Zionfelix.net, cogitating that it was as a result of the ban placed on them that has affected the songs.

But in an interview with Caleb Nii Boye on Live FM, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for Charterhouse, Robert Klah said otherwise.

According to him, it is not entirely true that such songs were snubbed because it featured these musicians who are serving a ban.

The Charterhouse PRO asserted that maybe such songs were not in the best capacity to be nominated after the power rank of songs was done by the board.

He emphasized that songs which directly do not belong to Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy will not be affected by the ban.

The VGMA organizers placed a ban on Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy following their fracas at the 20th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

  • Medeama goalie Eric Ofori Antwi in line for Black Stars call-up after ‘unrivaled’ form on domestic scene

Medeama goalkeeper Eric Ofori Antwi is in line to make Ghana’s squad for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan as a reward for his brilliant displays on the domestic front, GHANAsoccernet.com can report.

The 25-year-old has been the most outstanding goalkeeper in the domestic flight for the Mauve and Yellows this season and could earn a deserved call-up into the team.

Antwi’s form on the local and international front has elevated him to the position where it will be difficult for current Ghana coach Charles Akonnor to ignore him.

The immense quality of the last line of defense has been hugely highlighted in the local media as he inches closer to his first senior call-up.

The former Amidaus Professionals and Asante Kotoko shot-stopper has been the most consistent goalkeeper in Ghana over the past three seasons.

Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor is considering naming the highly-rated goalkeeper in his squad for the qualifier against Sudan at the Cape Coast Stadium on March 27.

The progress of Antwi has been remarkable having featured for both the country’s Under-20 and 23’s – and appears destined to complete the cast with a call-up into the senior national team.

Medeama’s fairly run in the 2019/20 campaign has been largely attributed to him for his remarkable and outstanding displays in post.

Of all the goalkeepers on the domestic front being considered including Hearts of Oak’s Richard Atta, Ashantigold’s Frank Boateng and Kotoko’s Felix Annan, Antwi stands tall.

Lightning off his line, capable of wonderful saves and mega-consistent, it’s no wonder several Premier League rivals nurture the ambition of taken him from Tarkwa.

Antwi has built his reputation from the full glare of the media, flinging himself about heroically on several occasions.

He has good height, fantastic reflexes and a superb goalkeeper who has been a key cog in Medeama’s surging run on the domestic front.

Watchers say it will be unjust and suicidal if he is overlooked for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the NorthEast African side on March 27 in the coastal town of Cape Coast.

The chips have fallen in place for the celebrated former Ghana Under-20 shot-stopper to have a goal with the Black Stars.

He played for Ghana as the West Africans clinched bronze at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.

He was again the first choice for Maxwell Konadu as Ghana played at the 2019 WAFU tournament in Senegal.

The statistics and form weighs largely in his favour as Ghana coach Charles Akonnor prepares to names his final squad for the qualifier next week.

If, as anticipated, Antwi is handed a debut call-up for the qualifier against Sudan, it will be viewed as a natural progression for the hugely talented shot-stopper, having featured for the country’s Black Satellites, Black Meteors and Local Black Stars

A video surfaced last week where a police officer could be seen on the bonnet of a taxi that was in motion.

Many made fun of the incident on social media as others criticized the action of the said taxi driver.

The officer clenched tightly on the bonnet of the speeding vehicle obviously to have the driver stop, possibly, for committing a road traffic offense.

The incident occurred in Koforidua in the Eastern Region and the Eastern Regional PRO Ebenezer Tetteh narrating the incident to Joy News disclosed that the driver has been arrested and charged.

“On February 21, the driver was spotted obstructing road traffic and picking passengers on unauthorised places within the Koforidua municipality, the traffic officers approached him and stopped him but he sped off and even injured one of the officers in the process. So on February 28, the car was spotted and 3 officers approached and assigned one to go with him to the police station, but he locked the vehicle preventing the officer from entering, he reversed quickly and sped off towards the direction of one of the officers who was directing traffic and he had no option than to jump onto the bonnet and he drove him to a distance of about 400 metres. A driver of a Nissan bus saw what was happening and crossed him to stop. As we speak now he has been arrested and we have charged him with dangerous driving and resisting arrest, the earlier offence of obstructing road traffic and parking at an unauthorized place is also there and he will be dealt with as well, we will use this to serve as a deterrent to other drivers.”.

She made this call upon a working visit to the area to inspect the extent of damage after the bridge was submerged after last year’s rains.

According to the indigenes, the bridge under construction to replace the old one has been abandoned by the Chinese contractors.

The bridge is an important link that connects Dafor through Agbenoxoe to the major market centres in Kpando.

  • Uruguay ushers in first conservative government in 15 years

After 15 years of left-wing leadership under the Broad Front coalition, Uruguay has ushered in a conservative government.

The centre-right National Party’s Luis Lacalle Pou was inaugurated on Sunday after winning by a runoff election in November against the Broad Front’s Daniel Martinez by about 37,000 votes.

While the Broad Front presided over one of the longest economic growth cycles in the country’s history, growth stalled in recent years.

The sluggish economy, combined with a high cost of living and an increasing homicide rate contributed to Uruguayans’ swerve to the right, analysts say.

The number of homicides increased by 46 percent in 2018. While the country’s official rate of 11.8 percent per 100,000 was relatively low compared with other countries in the region, “for Uruguayan standards, it’s high and many voters believed tougher measures were in order to stop gang and drug-related crimes from spreading,” said political analyst Oscar Bottinelli.

Uruguay has also become one of the most expensive countries in Latin America to live.

“Uruguayans pay 30 percent more for a litre of gasoline, then Argentines, Brazilians and Chileans,” said economist Ignacio Munyo.

Pou, a 46-year old lawyer and son of former president Luis Alberto Lacalle (1990-1995), has the support of five centre-right parties, including his National Party, as well as a majority in Congress.

His coalition wants to cut government spending and liberalise the energy sector, in order to tackle the country’s fiscal deficit.

Last year, the deficit increased to 4.8 percent of the gross domestic product, making it the highest deficit in 30 years.

“Pou plans to make most changes during his first year as president and has included them all in a 400-article bill,” said political analyst Daniel Chasquetti.

But his proposals, without angering trade unions, middle-class Uruguayans and the opposition, may prove to be an uphill battle.

“Uruguayans are very divided,” said Ximena Abitante, a teacher in Montevideo.

“Almost half of the country still supports the Broad Front,” he told Al Jazeera.

    ‘Peaceful haven’
Nestled between Argentina and Brazil, Uruguay is known as the “Switzerland of South America” – partly because of its banking secrecy rules, which were recently scrapped by Congress, but mostly because of its stability.

Uruguay was one of the only South American countries that did not experience social unrest last year.

“That is our biggest and perhaps most precious asset – what makes a tiny agricultural country like ours appealing,” Munyo told Al Jazeera.

In recent years, the region has experienced a number of political shifts, including Mexico, Argentina and Brazil.

“Uruguayans voted for Pou because they wanted a change, but don’t expect anything radical – this is a country with a low tolerance for extremists,” says Bottinelli.

When Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro openly rooted for Pou during the campaign, saying he hoped someone “closer” to his team would win Uruguay’s presidential elections, Pou sought to distance himself from the Brazilian leader. He appeared to side with the ruling Broad Front by questioning Brazil’s interference in Uruguayan politics.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea for rulers to influence what happens in another country,” Pou said at the time.

Part of Pou’s plan to inject money into Uruguay’s economy involves easing up regulations, to attract tens of thousands of wealthy and qualified immigrants – mostly from the region. With almost 3.5 million inhabitants, Uruguay is the smallest nation by population in South America – hardly an attractive market, compared with Brazil’s 200 million consumers or Argentina’s 44 million.

“We have already been singled out as a peaceful haven – the idea is to take the lead of countries, like Portugal, and make it more appealing to those seeking a better quality of life,” said German Cardoso, the newly sworn-in minister of tourism.

Uruguay has free healthcare and education, and is known for its progressive laws on abortion and same-sex marriage.

In 2013, it was the first in the world to legalise the production and distribution of cannabis.

“But equally important is the fact that we defend human rights, value private property, and respect both our institutions and contracts – no matter which way the government changes”, Cardoso told Al Jazeera.

  • Mike Tyson threatens to knock out actor Michael Blackson for offering to impregnate his daughter

Mike Tyson went off on Michael Blackson. The former boxing champion was less than impressed when the Ghanaian actor/comedian, real name Kwabena Koti Kesie, sent the retired athlete DMs offering to marry his daughter and give him grandchildren.

Blackson apparently read somewhere on the internet that Tyson was rumored to offer $10 million to any man willing to marry his plus-sized daughter. “Where she at? I’ll tear her a** up,” Blackson made rude comment in his caption as he shared the blog post. He added, “[I’ll] then go shopping plus she’s kinda cute.”

The 47-year-old actor didn’t stop there. He wrote to Tyson asking, “If this is true, I think I’m finally ready to settle down. I known I’ve been dipping n dapping a few snow bunnies and Asian persuasion but I’m ready for your beautiful queen.”

He continued, “I’m ready to give u some grand kids that will have the complexion of Tyson Bedford, knowledge pf Cicely Tyson, talk like you Mike Tyson and hopefully not built like Tyson Fury. I really don’t give a f**k about the money but I’ll take it. Waiting to hear from you father in law sir.”

Tyson was understandable furious at Blackson since no father would want to hear a man making such vulgar remarks about their daughter. Tyson said the headline was hoax and warned Blackson, “Listen u black little b***h, this s**t ain’t real and soon as I find the person that started that meme, imma knock hem the f**k out so make sure it ain’t you burnt roach looking b***h.”

The former boxer added, “My daughter is happily in a relationship with a nice looking man so she’s not interested in an overcooked hotdog like you. Next time you do my podcast, imma knock the black off u, it might take a year because you black as f**k.”

He concluded by threatening to get Blackson kicked out of the country, “Gtfo my dm before I get your black a** deported you geico lizard looking b***h.”

Blackson responded, “Omg wtf did I get myself into. Tyson I’m sorry please don’t hit me I’m just a beech ass neega.”

The actor posted his exchange with the boxer on his Instagram and it soon went viral. Rappers Snoop Dogg and Ghostface Killah laughed at him on the comment section. “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kandi Burruss wrote, “I can’t believe you DM’d that man that bulls**t!
