  • GES issues stern warning to students involved in sex scandal

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has described as distasteful recent sex scandals involving some Ghanaian female second-cycle students, which had gone viral on social media.

“We unreservedly condemn such acts as they contravened the norms and values of the Ghanaian society,” Mr. Anthony Boateng, Deputy Director-General, GES, noted.

The authorities, he said, had taken a serious view of the issue and observed that most, unfortunately, majority of such acts involved female students.

“The GES would not countenance such humiliating acts. Surely, the authorities would crack the whip as and when necessary,” he told participants at the 75th-anniversary celebration of the Effiduase Senior High Commercial School (EFFISCO), Effiduase, in the Sekyere-East District of the Ashanti Region.

Mr. Boateng advised authorities of second-cycle institutions to as a matter of urgency, strengthen their guidance and counseling units, to be able to perform their duties efficiently, especially in the area of sensitizing students to conform to societal norms in their behaviour.

“Sometimes, some of these disgraceful practices are done out of ignorance and peer pressure,” the GES Deputy Director-General noted.

Commenting on the recent directive to restrict the payment of Parent-Teacher-Association (PTA) dues and levies, he said the authorities would not back down on its resolve in spite of pleas from certain quarters.

“We will resist any attempt to go back to the old ways because it is the responsibility of the PTA to explore innovative ways of securing funds for their projects,” Mr. Boateng insisted.

“The lack of PTA dues and levies should not be a barrier to finding innovative ways to fund school projects,” he remarked.

  • ‘I can’t believe this is happening in Ghana’ – Kwesi Pratt on ‘rambo style’ Trade Fair demolition

The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper is incensed over how properties were demolished by the Ghana Trade Fair Company Limited (GTFCL) over the weekend.

  • Can a pill ease the painful memory of an ex?

A Montreal researcher says he has found a way to take the emotional sting out a bad breakup by “editing” memories using therapy and a beta blocker.

Dr Alain Brunet has spent over 15 years studying post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), working with combat veterans, people who have experienced terror attacks and crime victims.

Much of his research has centred on the development of what he calls “reconsolidation therapy”, an innovative approach that can help remove emotional pain from a traumatic memory.

At the heart of his work is a humble pharmaceutical – propranolol – a beta blocker long used to treat common physical ailments like hypertension and migraines, but which research now suggests has a wider application.

The reconsolidation method involves taking propranolol about an hour before a therapy session where the patient is asked to write a detailed account of their trauma and then read it aloud.

“Often when you recall memory, if there’s something new to learn, this memory will unlock and you can update it, and it will be saved again,” the Canadian clinical psychologist tells the BBC.

That process of reconsolidation creates a window of opportunity to target the highly emotional portion of that memory.

“We’re using this enhanced understanding on how memories are formed and how they are unlocked and updated and saved again – we’re essentially using this recent knowledge coming out of neuroscience to treat patients,” says Dr Brunet.

His work has often been compared to the science fiction film Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, where an estranged couple have their memories of each other erased, though Dr Brunet notes memories aren’t gone after reconsolidation therapy, they just stop hurting.

Memories, their neutral, factual elements, are saved in the brain’s hippocampus. But the emotional tone of the memory is saved in its amygdala.

“Imagine that you are shooting a movie in the old-fashioned way so you have the image and and the sound and they are on two separate channels,” he says.

When a person relives their traumatic memory they experience both channels. Propranolol helps target one channel – the emotional aspect of memory – inhibiting its reconsolidation and suppressing its pain.

A memory recalled under the influence of the medication will then be “saved” by the brain in its new, less emotional version.

His research suggests about 70% of patients found relief within a few sessions of reconsolidation therapy.

Dr Brunet has collaborated with other PTSD researchers, including Harvard University’s PTSD expert Dr Roger Pitman, in studying the method.

More recently, he launched a programme in France in the wake of deadly terror attacks in Paris and Nice, training some 200 doctors in the therapy to help treat victims, witnesses and first responders.

So far, over 400 people have undergone the therapy in that country as part of the programme.

After showing success with post-traumatic stress, the doctor says he wanted to broaden the application for the treatment.

In 2015, along with one of his former graduate students, Michelle Lonergan, at McGill University in Montreal, he turned his attention to the broken hearted and their “romantic betrayals”.

“If you look at Greek tragedies what are they of? Essentially betrayals,” he says. “It’s really at the heart of the human experience.”

A bad breakup can also be tremendously painful, he notes, and people can feel emotional reactions similar to those seen in trauma survivors.

The patients they recruited for the study weren’t suffering just a mild case of heartbreak. There were cases of infidelity. Some had been suddenly abandoned by someone they believed was a loving partner.

They were struggling to cope and were people who “cannot turn the page, they cannot get over it”, says Dr Brunet.

“That’s what people were constantly telling them, which is not helpful. But [their friends] are pinpointing the problem.”

It was like the patients were “stuck in Groundhog Day” – the 1993 comedy where Bill Murray’s character relives the same 2 February day over and over – but were instead stuck obsessively reliving their painful betrayals in their minds.

What he and Dr Lonergan found was that, like with PTSD, many of the heartbreak sufferers felt relief, some after a single reconsolidation therapy session.

After five sessions, when they read aloud the memory of their betrayal, they had the “impression that this could have been written by someone else – like reading a novel”.

“This treatment approximates the normal working of memory, how we gradually forget and turn the page,” he says.

His Montreal-based lab is currently recruiting about 60 people who have suffered infidelity or some other form of deception in a relationship for a new reconsolidation therapy study.

Dr Brunet is also hopeful the scope of reconsolidation therapy can be expanded further, used to treat phobias, addiction, complicated grief.

“Any type of distress which emanates from an emotional event,” he says.

  • The 21 best and worst first date questions you could possibly ask

Some guys have a knack for first dates . They can seamlessly navigate conversations, so topics flow from one to the next without any lulls. They effortlessly balance talking about themselves while still learning about their partner. Theyre charming, funny, and quick-witted. They just really have it down.

Then theres the rest of us, who might need a little help on first dates when the prolonged silence with our partner sounds deafening. If you find yourself in a bind on a first date, not sure of what to say, here are 20 questions that should hopefully get you and your partner talking again. These questions aren’t the boring “What do you do for work?” They’re ideal questions to ask if you really want to get to know your partner. (We also provided three bonus questions of what to definitely not ask your partner.)

The Best Questions to Ask on a First Date

    1. What’s been your favorite vacation?

Why its good to ask: Everyone loves going on vacation and talking about what they did that made it so great, says Maria Sullivan, Dating Expert and VP of . Asking this question on a first date will open up a conversation about where your date has traveled and if you are both into the same types of vacation destinations.

    2. Whats your dream travel destination?

Why its good to ask: Talking travel really works, adds Amanda Bradford, founder and CEO of the dating app, The League . In , 18% of couples on first dates who discussed travel wanted to go a second date. In contrast, less than 9% of couples who talked about movies wanted to go out again.

    3. What are you most passionate about?

Why its good to ask: People love discussing the hobbies and pursuits they enjoy, says Bradford. If you want to know who someone is, find out what they love.

    4. Are you more of a morning or night person?

Why its good to ask: Some people are able to wake up at the crack of dawn while other are able to stay awake until the crack of dawn, says Sullivan. Asking your date this question will give you an idea of their daily schedule. For example, are they up early at the gym or up late binge watching their favorite shows? This can help determine if you two are compatible with one another.

    5. Who should play you in the movie of your life?

Why its good to ask: This fun ‘what-if’ question caters to their egoand the actor they choose clues you in on how they see themselves, says Bradford.

    6. Whats the most interesting fact you know?

Why its good to ask: People are full of interesting facts, says Sullivan. This is a fun question to ask to find out what your date knows, and you might even learn something new. Additionally, everyone loves coming across as interesting. Its great youre giving your date the opportunity to do so.

    7. Who did you see for your first concert?

Why its good to ask: Music is a great date topic,” explains Bradford. Prepare to be impressed that they saw Beyonce, or saddened that they saw Nickelback.

    8. What was the best day of your life?

Why its good to ask: This question takes your date back in time to a big life moment that theyll love reliving, says Bradford. It goes much deeper than surface-level chat, and this deeper dive makes you stand out from other guys this person has been going on dates with.

    9. Whats your favorite holiday?

Why its good to ask: This question can give you insight into your dates religion based on the answer, which can be an important part of a relationship, explains Sullivan. It also opens up to conversation about religion, which yes, could be a lot on a first date, but also might not be. Youll have to gauge to see if you should take the conversation there.

    10. Whats the best gift youve ever given someone?

Why its good to ask: Theyll get to brag a bit while feeling very generous, Bradford says. It’s also a big red flag if they haven’t given anyone anything.

    11. What do you love most about your job/career?

Why its good to ask: This question lets you talk about work in a positive, emotionally evocative way, rather than boringly asking, So, what do you do? says Bradford.

    12. What were you like as a kid?

Why its good to ask: Sharing stories from childhood gives them a chance to be vulnerable by giving you a glimpse of their younger self, explains Bradford. Youre helping them connect with you and with their younger self.

    13. What does your ultimate favorite meal consist of?

Why its good to ask: Who doesnt love food? asks Sullivan. This question will allow you to figure out what types of food you have in common and if things go well, it can even help you decide where to go on your second date.

    14. Whats your hidden talent?

Why its good to ask: This allows them to show off while sharing a secretand sharing personal secrets can build trust and connection, says Bradford.

    15. Would you rather?

Why its good to ask: A first date should be fun, and good ‘Would You Rather’ questions get your date laughing, Bradford says. A found that women are drawn to men with a sense of humor. Here are some fun examples!” Bradford recommends:

Would you rather have a snowball fight or a food fight?

Would you rather walk in on your parents having sex, or they walk in on you having sex?

Would you rather have eight arms or be a cyclops?”

    16. What do you usually do on weekends?

Why its good to ask: This question gives you a chance to see if you have matching lifestyles. If your partner’s weekends consist of reading in bed whereas most weekends you’re out at the club drinking with friends, then they might not be the right person for you. If you do have similar weekends, then the conversation will naturally flow from there. For example, if you both like reading, you’ll be able to discuss your favorite books. If you both like going out, you can talk about your favorite bars.

    17. What’s on your bucket list?

Why its good to ask: This question now only gives you a sense of your partner’s interests, it also provides great ideas for date number two. If you really like them after the first date, sky diving might not be that crazy of idea if that’s something they’ve always wanted to try out.

    18. Want to share an embarrassing moment?

Why its good to ask: On dates, we try to present the best version of ourselves, as we should, but sometimes, it can get a little too serious and even start to sound a little “braggy.” This question helps you and your partner be vulnerable with one another, breaking down any facades.

    The Worst First Date Questions:

    1. Why are you single?

Why you shouldnt ask: Although this question may seem harmless, it may leave your date feeling awkward and unsure how to answer, she says. It also can be read as an insult. In essence, you’re asking, “So what’s wrong with you?”

    2. How many exes do you have?

Why you shouldnt ask: Asking this personal of a question on a first date can be a big red flag, she says. It is important to take your dates privacy into consideration and not ask anything that might make them feel uncomfortable.

    3. How much money do you make?

Why you shouldnt ask: Someones income is not an important piece of information for a first date and may make you seem like you are more interested in money than the actual person, she explains. Spend the first date asking questions that will allow you to learn more about your dates heart, not their wallet.

  • Dont underestimate sex in relationships Abena Magis

Popular social media relationship speaker Abena Magis has advised couples to pay attention to sex because it plays a vital role in making relationships last longer.

Speaking to patrons who made it to the Rekindle Love with Graphic Showbiz on Valentine event which took place at the Sogakope Beach Resort & Spa from Friday, February 14 to Sunday, February 16, Abena Magis said some couples let themselves go the very moment they marry or have children which should not be the case.

“The reason some of the girls will come close to your husbands is that you stop doing what you did that got your partner close to you. There are several types of intimacy and sexual intimacy is one of them which should not be taken for granted.

“Ladies, learn to try new things, enough of the doggy style, the wheelbarrow, try something new, be spontaneous. And the men, love us like that when we take initiative. The bedroom, couch sex is enough, try different places, the car, etc. After church service on Sunday, try and anoint the car as well, you can do it there,” she said.

Abena Magis’ talk was very candid and she led by example when she revealed that her favorite sex position was the reverse cow girl. “For me, I love that position; it is my favourite of all time.”

Reverse cow girl is a sex position where the woman straddles the man, facing the man’s feet in a kneeling or squatting position.

Abena Magis also gave a little insight into how she became a sort of counsellor. “I started something called manokekame on Facebook as a result of something that took a toll on me.

“It was just for fun you know but anytime I posted anything on relationships, I realised that people were interested and it became a thing that people were expecting every time so I took it up.

“Again, I have something called booty calls I do from time to time and it is basically about sex. and I realised that majority of the people who were interested and shared their stories were people who had been married for years and I knew it was time to take this thing serious and that has been it for me,” she said.

  • 34 missing excavators triggered investigations – Hajia Alima Mahama

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama says the investigations into some missing excavators seized by the Operation Vanguard as part of the clamp-down on illegal mining was triggered by 34 of them which could not be accounted for at Tema.

According to her, the number of missing investigators was not presently known as of now since the issue was still being investigated.

She has therefore advised against throwing figures about following public discussions some of which had said more than 300 excavators are missing.

She stated this in Parliament on Tuesday [February 18, 2020] when the matter was raised on the floor by Alhassan Suhuyini, the Member of Parliament for Tamale North.

Mr Suhuyini had called for an investigation into the missing excavators and a call on the government to financially account for the operation it initiated in 2017 against illegal mining, to which President Akufo-Addo pledged to put his presidency on the line.

Hajia Alima Mahama’s mention of the figure 34 as the number of missing excavators on record raised arguments on the floor of Parliament with the Minority Leader, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, for example, stating that, he had heard the Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining and the Minister of Environment, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng mention that over 300 excavators were missing.

But responding to the argument, Hajia Mahama explained that “this whole issue about missing excavators came out because of an audit that occurred, and they went to Tema, looked at the books, the station where some excavators had been placed and the books indicated that 34 excavators had been sent there but they were not there.”

“So that is when we raised the query [that] if the books indicate that 34 excavators are here, where are they?”

She said the Inter-Ministerial Committee Chairman then sent it for investigation. “So the proper thing to do was to get it investigated and that is why all this issue came about that there are missing excavators.”

Hajia Alima Mahama’s argument was that, as of now, the actual number of missing excavators are not known and that could be ascertained after the investigations and therefore advised against Members of Parliament throwing figures about on the floor.

“We are not saying that somebody stole them or whatever, we don’t know. The investigating report will then tell us where they’ve gone to and we will proceed from there. If it raises grounds for prosecution, then the prosecution will begin. So it depends on what the person is saying, I’m not saying there are only 34 excavators are missing. I’m only saying that the issue that triggered the investigation was when an audit was commissioned and the audit report indicated that the books in Tema indicated 34 excavators were sent there but on inspection, the number was not 34.”

  • Placing of Lolobi and Akpafu under Jasikan District suit withdrawn

A suit filed by two chiefs challenging the Electoral Commission (EC) for placing Lolobi and Akpafu under the Jasikan District in the newly created Oti Region has been withdrawn at the Supreme Court.

The suit which was instituted by two chiefs, Nana Akoto Masakyi III, Paramount Chief of Lolobi Traditional Area and Nana Tetteh-Attu V, the Adontehene and Acting Paramount Chief of Akpafu.

The case was withdrawn after the Supreme Court presided over by Justice Kwesi Anin Yeboah indicated that he had seen a petition sent to his office in relation to the matter.

According to Justice Yeboah, his office would have to set up a tribunal to look into the matter hence there was no need for the parties to be filing processes in court.

He explained that there was the need to conduct some research and give the needed directives in relation to setting up of the tribunal.

Chief Justice Yeboah then advised Mr Martin Kpebu counsel for the two chiefs to take close look at Article 5 of the 1992 Constitution.

Mr Kpebu then told the court that he conducted a series of enquires and consultation where he was made to understand that he could file the suit at the Supreme Court.

Following the explanation offered to Mr Kpebu by the court, he withdrew the suit.

The Court, therefore, struck out the suit as withdrawn.

It has been the case of the two chief that the decision by the EC to place Lolobi and Akpafu under the Jasikan District was in bad faith, since that people of Lolobi and Akpafu did not petition the President, neither did they ask the Justice Allan Brobey Commission to include the two areas in the Oti Region.

In their statement of claim accompanying a number of declaration, the chiefs and people of Akpafu and Lolobi stated that since 1945 they had refused to be part of the Jasikan/Buem District, constituency or the now Oti Region.

  • GNFS steps up fire education campaign in Ashanti region

The Ashanti Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has stepped up educational campaigns to sensitize the people in the communities on the causes of fire and its attendant devastating effects.

The move is to help reduce the incidence of fire outbreaks and its negative consequences on the victims, the government and the national economy.

One of such awareness programs had been conducted at Breman and Kronom-Afrancho, in the Suame Municipality, where about 30 per cent of fire outbreaks in the Region, had occurred in January this year.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Joshua Ngoah, Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, speaking at the ceremony said the Region recorded a total of 225 fire outbreaks in the month of January this year alone.

Two people died during the outbreaks while properties running into several millions of cedis were destroyed.

ACFO Ngoah stressed the need for the people to change their behavior in the way they handled naked fire and keep good house-keeping practices to reduce outbreaks.

Assistant Divisional Officer Grade 1 (ADO1), Ackah Desmond Essoun, Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO), advised owners of shops to pack their wares properly when they closed for the day.

They should desist from leaving naked wires to touch their wares since that could spark fire outbreaks.

He said packing wares in front of streets and on fire hydrants made it difficult for fire tenders to penetrate and have access to hydrants in case of fire outbreaks.

ADO1 Essoun again cautioned shop owners against leaving electrical gadgets on when they closed their shops in the evening, and the use of cheap and sub-standard electrical cables to wire shops as well as the engagement of non-professional electricians to work for them.

He educated the shop owners on the proper use of gas cylinders and cautioned drivers to desist from filling their fuel tanks to the brim, which might also cause fire outbreaks.

Smoking closer to gas cylinders he added, was also a dangerous practice.

ADO1 Essoun said the awareness program would be sustained to create the needed awareness to reduce fire outbreaks in the Region. GNA

  • Diaries of an independent presidential aspirant #1: The day, the question!

It was a Thursday night in October. I lay on a bed in the little town of Heidelberg, Germany. The room felt heavy, almost as though the thoughts in my head were leaving my mind and filling up the room.

Six months earlier, my heart and mind had started forming around the decision whether to go into politics at this level – a process which started all the way in 2015. Back then, I left if at culminating my thoughts into a treatise I titled, “The Marricke Gane Chronicles”. I said to myself, at least that’s enough. Some folks will take it and find some use for it. Now, it was different – it was taking on flesh.

Today, was the day it was all coming together – the pros, the cons, the relationships that would be tested, the hard decisions that will need making, the career implications, the freedoms to curtail, the mental pressures, the personal sacrifices, the regrets and or things I will have to live with for the rest of my life… it was almost torturing. I remember sitting up a few times, lying, pacing the flat, crouching in a corner, talking to myself. A lot was at stake. For me at least it was. I was here to do an audit of a research grant the EU had awarded a scary science facility in the hidden mountains. It was my second time here, out of three times, except that this time, I came both to work and sieve through this burden.

If there was one thing that was obvious during these 3 turbulent days, it was a rather familiar knowledge that – the odds were against me, it was even against the idea I was contemplating, and I was damn certain the odds were against how we were going to get it executed – afterall, no Independent candidate had the kind of money or political machinery is assumed as needed to contest our two political behemoths. I certainly didn’t. So why won’t this burden just leave – I quizzed myself fruitlessly.

By now, I had already spoken to 12 people. Three close family – persons who knew me inside out, persons who cared about me; then I reached out to one younger and three older friends I considered had all already walked or parried through Ghana’s corridors of political power – a consultant, a lawyer, a diplomat and an engineer by professions. Then of course the Pastor, whose 21 Day fasting drill he put me on when I first told him, remains to date, the hardest in my Christian walk largely because of the thinking it came with and indeed, the most turbulent period of my last decade.

But it was the most necessary. Somehow, during that fast, I came to believe when the Bible talked about Jesus meeting satan in the wilderness after His 40 days fast, it wasn’t satan He met, I think He met Himself – only in a mirror that reflected the darkness he could have become without the sacrifice of self. It is a place we must all visit – to see what we could each become without the sacrifice of the things we treasure most. Then I spoke to a nemesis of mine, a woman who wielded power behind global curtains, simple but insightful. I remember she was in Instanbul when I called her. She heard me and for the first time of knowing her for 20 years plus, she was silent, then asked to return to me in 2 days time. 2 mentees who for their ages possessed quite unflinching convictions.

They mattered to me. Finally, Madam Esther. She, is pure Gold. Sadly passed away mid 2019. Madam Esther many years back changed my view of what knowledge truly was. I chanced on her through an old Aunt of mine a d she became a mentor. She’d never been to school, traded her whole life, raised her children to the highest intellectual orders and understood what Politics truly was pre-PNDC and right through the 4th republic. She gave me one advice – it is one I hold on to, daily. May her soul RIPP.

Now, I had to put it all together. A wise man once told me, paraphrased, “many hunters and chiefs can give you advise and insights into tackling a lion- at the right time, you will need to be in a forest, with the lion…alone” Today for me, was that day.

I asked myself many questions, replayed the different pieces of insights and advice, played many scenarios, replayed several things I had heard people say about serving one’s country – some discouraging, others just downright frightening – why throw everything away? These people are vicious – you could get killed in the process you know? In the end, this one question weighed my intentions, my fears, my desires, my doubts and my Hope’s. A question we all as citizens must ask ourselves from time to time:

“If Ghana were at a point, where its progress, depended on you availing yourself, leaving behind personal comforts and society’s entitlements – could Ghana count on you?”

Eventually, I made my decision. I needed to do it. For many reasons than just one.

I knew then, what many would say, but I needed to do it. I knew the insults to come, the sleaze, the doubtful castings. There was much to expect – but I needed to do it. The Romans have a saying – Even One Hair, Has a Shadow!! So do each of us – we each matter!!

Today, I ask you sisters and brothers, what I asked myself then:

Can posterity count on you? If it all depended on you…. can our beloved Ghana, count on you?

  • Akufo-Addo must punish officials who failed Ghanaians in galamsey fight Suhuyini

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini has urged the President to account for all items seized in the fight against illegal mining.

Already, various bodies have called on the government to provide details on the progress or otherwise made on the fight against galamsey, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), demanding for a public exhibition of the seized excavators.

Alhassan Suhuyini, on the Floor of Parliament on Tuesday, said: “His Excellency the President who boldly put his Presidency on the line to demonstrate how much this course meant to him, if for nothing at all, Mr. Speaker, has his Presidency to save and it will be important that he starts by accounting for and to the people of Ghana all equipment, vehicles, weapons, ammunition and gold which were seized and kept by officers he commissioned to help end illegal mining and if necessary, penalize all who have proven to be negligent or complacent in what may have gone wrong.”

He also urged the House to probe the amount of money released for the fight against illegal mining and whether it was used for the right purpose.

“Mr. Speaker, in the face of what is clearly less than a successful campaign, I suggest humbly that your Parliament also shows more interest in how funds approved for this exercise to the various institutions have truly be expended and the results attained. Because these are funds belonging to the people whose interest we in all humility represent,” he added.

    Similar calls

The NDC has asked the government to account for all excavators and ammunition seized during the Stop Galamsey Campaign.

According to the Communications Director of the party, Sammy Gyamfi, the government had seized 900 excavators during the campaign.

He cited figures in the 2020 budget presented in Parliament to support his claim.

Addressing a press conference on the banks of River Pra at Twifo Praso in the Central Region on Sunday, Mr. Gyamfi challenged the government to make a public presentation on the state of the items.

    Calls for probe

A former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology under the erstwhile Mahama administration, Akwasi Oppong Fosu, has called for an intensive investigation into the missing excavators case.

Mr. Fosu in an interview said an intensive investigation into the matter will bring some finality to the issue.

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council has also thrown its weight behind calls for Akufo-Addo to take a keen interest in the alleged missing excavators and gold saga.

The latest call comes on the back of a similar one made by the Concerned Small Scale Miners.

In an interview with Citi News, General Secretary of the Council, Rev. Emmanuel T. Barrigah said the Council expects that people found culpable in the ongoing investigations will be dealt with.

Meanwhile, the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor to investigate alleged corruption in the enforcement of small scale mining laws.

ASEPA wants the Inter-Ministerial Committee against Illegal Mining and the anti-illegal mining task force, Operation Vanguard, to be the focus of the probe by the Special Prosecutor.

In the petition, it highlighted the need for “full investigations into the misappropriation of seized items such as excavators, mining equipment, gold and weapons by the IMCIM through the fight against illegal mining.”

    Background

The missing excavators brouhaha began when Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and also Chairperson for the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), disclosed recently that some of the excavators which were seized from illegal miners between 2017 and 2018 had vanished.

Some members of the Concerned Small Scale Miners Association subsequently revealed that they knew the whereabouts of the missing excavators, with claims that they were being used for galamsey in parts of the country.

The suspended NPP Central Regional Vice Chairman, Ekow Ewusi who was contracted by the government to cart excavators and other vehicles and pieces of equipment seized by Operation Vanguard to designated areas for safekeeping was then seen as a suspect to the case.

A letter sighted by Citi News revealed that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng wrote a letter to the Police CID to investigate him over his alleged involvement in the missing earth-moving equipment.

  • Meningitis kills two students of Nyankumasi SHS in the Central Region

Two (2) students of Nyankumasi Ahenkro Senior High School (SHS) have died out of Meningitis out of seven reported cases in the Assin South District of the Central Region, MyNewsGh.com has confirmed.

Health authorities disclosed that cases of Meningitis were reported in three communities within Assin South involving a farmer, some traders and a seamstress with appeals to the public to desist from buying over the counter drugs as treatment.

A preliminary report by a medical team at the Assin South District Health Directorate led by the Central Regional Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr. Kwabena Sarpong confirmed the death of the two students.

According to him, one of the risk factors of meningitis is mainly overcrowding and congestion as well as affected persons coughing and sneezing haphazardly further spreading the disease.

Dr. Sarpong disclosed this when he met journalists at the Central Regional Health Directorate in Cape Coast to brief them on precautionary measures on the deadly Coronavirus, Meningitis and Inactivated Polio Vaccine campaigns

He said when his outfit was alerted about the Meningitis disease killing students at Nyankumasi Ahenkro SHS, he rushed to the said School with his hard-working team and upon their visit realized that two other students also had the said disease and they were treated and discharged.

Dr. Sarpong added the team screened all the sick students but none had Meningitis.

He said he used the visit to educate the entire School including the authorities and staff about the dangers of Meningitis and measures to prevent it.

Dr. Kwabena Sarpong advised the school authorities to make sure they decongest the school dormitories to prevent the spread of various diseases.

“The sad part is that a student who went home to do the National Identification Authority(NIA) card and was well when she was leaving the school, later developed symptoms and was rushed to the Saint Francis Hospital at Assin Foso and passed the same day” he narrated.

  • The health benefits of a random act of kindness

This year, “Random Acts of Kindness” Day falls on Monday, but the foundation behind it wants you to consider being kind every day.

In fact, they want you to be a “RAKtivist,” or a “Random Acts of Kindness activist.”

Here’s why: Spreading kindness not only helps others feel better about themselves — it can also boost the giver’s health and happiness, according to research. It’s a win-win for all.

    A ‘helper’s high’

Studies have shown that putting the well-being of others before our own without expecting anything in return — or what is called being altruistic — stimulates the reward centers of the brain. Those feel-good chemicals flood our system, producing a sort of “helper’s high.” Volunteering, for example, has been shown to minimize stress and improve depression.

That’s not all: The same activity can also reduce the risk for cognitive impairment and even help us live longer.

One reason for this, experts say, is because kindness contributes to our sense of community and belonging. And that, studies have found, is a key contributor to a healthy, longer life.

    Lower blood pressure

Giving donations to others, or “prosocial spending,” has been shown to reduce blood pressure and improve heart health. One study asked a group of hypertensive people to spend $40 on themselves, while another group of people with high blood pressure were told to spend the money on others.

They found that those who spent money on others had lower blood pressure at the end of the six-week study. In fact, the benefits were as large as those from healthy diet and exercise.

    Pain reduction

Giving seems to lessen our pain. A recent study found that people who said they would donate money to help orphans were less sensitive to an electric shock than those who declined to give. In addition, the more helpful people thought their donation would be, the less pain they felt.

How could this happen? The study found that regions of the brain that react to painful stimulation appear to be instantly deactivated by the experience of giving.

    Happiness

In the UK, researchers found that being kind could boost happiness in as little as three days. The study assigned people to three groups: the first group had to do an act of kindness each day; the second group tried a new activity; and the third group did nothing. The groups who were kind and did novel things saw a significant boost in happiness.

You’ll experience even greater joy if you’re creative with your acts of kindness. Happiness researchers Sonja Lyubomirsky and Kennon Sheldon found people who did a variety of acts of kindness throughout the week showed greater increases in happiness than those who performed the same activity over and over again.

And here’s the good news: it seems acts of kindness can be anonymous or visible, spontaneous or planned, and can be as simple as giving a compliment or opening a door for someone.

    Kindness suggestions

OK, you’re convinced and want to jump right into being a kinder and more helpful person. There are literally hundreds of ideas on the internet, but here are a few to get you started:

While driving, make room for the car who wants to enter your lane.

Let the person in line behind you at the supermarket go first.

Give a genuine compliment to someone in the elevator with you.

Do the same for your boss — they probably never get compliments!

Let go of a grudge and tell that person you forgive them.

Be there for a friend having a tough time. Don’t try to fix it; just listen.

Leave your mail carrier a thank you note.

Want something more organized? The non-profit group City of Kindness has set a 2020 campaign to “promote unity and respect within the school environment,” organized by the global nonprofit “Kids for Peace.”

The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation also has lists of kindness ideas, organized by work, community, environment, animals, strangers, kids, seniors and more. If you become a “RAKtivist,” you’ll get a monthly kindness challenge designed to help a worthy cause or individual.

“You’re making the world a better place,” they say. But don’t forget — any kindness you give to others is also a gift to yourself.

  • Kenyans defend hawkers arrested with plastic bags

Kenyans online are outraged after three hawkers were arrested for using banned plastic bags.

The country’s environment agency said the three would be fined up to $40,000 (£32,000) or face a prison sentence of up to four years.

The National Environment Management Authority (Nema) shared a photo of the three vendors clutching plums, passion fruit and sugarcane packed in plastic bags.

Kenyans online have defended the hawkers:

Giitwa Gichuki tweeted, “Though I do not sympathise with anyone using the banned bags, this is too low for you guys. Extremely low, bearing in mind that the unscrupulous dealers responsible for production and supplying the polythene bags in bulk are walking scot-free.”

Onyango Ongoya questioned, “Where do you think those guys are gonna get 2-4mn and imprisoning them for 1-4 years will kill their families? You must be very proud of upholding the law by making an example with the small fish.”

Samantha wrote, “This is low even for Nema. Nema can’t do basic stuff like draft local trash separation and recycling policies for the public or even come up with plastic recycling plants but they can harass poor people lol. I struggle to see the use of Nema.”

  • 82 Zimbabweans arrested for wildlife crimes, 17 pangolins recovered

At least 82 people were arrested last year while police recovered 17 pangolins and over 1 000kg of pangolin scales, as the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) declares war on wildlife crimes.

During the same period, ZRP handled 40 cases and of the 82 arrests, 12 people were convicted and jailed effective nine years each, for illegal possession of pangolins.

In a statement yesterday, Criminal Investigations Department (CID) spokesperson Detective Inspector Portia Chinho warned would-be offenders that it was illegal to kill or traffic any endangered wildlife as the offences attract a mandatory nine-year jail term.

“In Zimbabwe, the pangolin is one of the specially protected yet most trafficked mammals. Other specially protected mammals include the cheetah, aardwolf, bat eared fox, gemsbok, black rhinoceros and white rhinoceros. The pangolin in its entirety is believed to possess an array of medicinal qualities though no scientific qualification has supported this cultural mythology whose power has justified the poaching and trafficking of the only scaled mammal.

“Our natural heritage is protected by law and as such the Zimbabwe Republic Police will not hesitate to enforce the law without fear or favour. Law enforcement officials are not going to sit down and fold hands until sanity prevails in the country,” she said.

She said on February 11, the CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit in Guruve arrested Zuze Tauro (39) of Mushumbi Pools who was selling a live pangolin. Police intercepted Tauro at Chitsungo Business Centre, Mushumbi Pools, while in possession of the pangolin which was in a wooden cage and arrested him.

In a similar case in Beitbridge, detectives from the same unit last week arrested Plaxedes Sibanda (28) for possessing a live pangolin and she was taken to court where she was sentenced to 24 months in jail.

  • Rwanda’s president Kagame hints at firing more ministers

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has hinted at firing more ministers in the coming days, accusing them of lying, carelessness and indiscipline.

At the Leader’s Retreat on Sunday hosted at the Gabiro Military Training Centre, Kagame warned that some officials “could be next”, following the firing of three top officials over the last three weeks, among them Minister of Health Diane Gashumba.

Dr Gashumba, who has served as Minister of Health since 2016, was sacked on Friday evening following “a series of habitual gross errors and repeated leadership failures,” the Prime Minister’s Office announced.

But speaking at the National Leadership Retreat, President Paul Kagame accused Dr Gashumba of lying to him about the availability of kits to test individuals for the deadly Coronavirus, Covid-19.

“One morning, I called one of the leaders and the Prime Minister about the Coronavirus and asked that they examine each one of us ahead of the Leader’s Retreat. I told them to tell the minister of health to ensure this.

“She responded that we have 3,500 kits, and that using 400 of them to test leaders would seriously deplete the number of kits we have. The person I sent told her that the message is an instruction, and that if she has objections she should call me.

“Later we discovered that we do not have the kits as she said. We have kits for only 95 people and not 3,500. I asked her about this and she started giving excuses in a long story. You leaders, you cannot even speak the truth; how do you expect to solve problems?” President Kagame said.

He then accused former State Minister for Education, Isaac Munyakazi, of accepting a bribe of Rwf500,000 (about $550) to doctor school rankings.

“Munyakazi met officials of some school that had been ranked last and they asked him to rank it among the top schools. He complied by putting the school among the top schools. He was awarded just Rwf500,000 for it. If I had not fired him, he would be here with us and none of you would come up to ask me why. That is how you have normalised bad behaviour,” President Kagame told the officials.

He said he sacked the Minister for Justice, Evode Uwizeyimana, for displaying “bad manners on several occasions.”

“Evode parked his vehicle in a place that people are not supposed to park and then tried to enter a building without being checked. The security guard followed him and politely told him that he must be checked but he instead beat her and threw her to the ground,” President Kagame said.

“But it was not the first or second time. This is how he has been conducting himself and some of you knew this and you were quiet about it. You had shown him that he could get away with such behaviour. Which kind of people are you?”

President Kagame has hinted that more officials could be heading out the door.

Among the embattled ministers include Minister of Defence Major Gen Albert Musasira and Minister of Internal Security Gen Patrick Nyanvumba.

The President said the two ministers must explain a case regarding the state of national hospitals and warned that they could also be on their “way out”, without divulging further details.

In December last year, President Kagame fired Ms Seraphine Mukantabana, former chairman of Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission, over mismanaging the commission. Mr James Musoni, a long-serving top official, was dismissed as Minister of Infrastructure in March 2018.

Mr Musoni, however, returned to government in October last year when he was appointed ambassador to Zimbabwe. In October 2018, President Paul Kagame sent home four senior officials for “gross misconduct” and also sacked an entire unit at the Ministry of Health for “wasting public resources”.

  • NHIS service providers to withdraw services in March over monies owed them

The Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana (PHFAoG) and the Health Insurance Service Providers Association of Ghana (HISPAG), on Monday, urged the government to ensure the urgent reimbursement of all monies owed them.

They said effective March 1, 2020, the providers would be compelled to withdraw some services that continued to create financial burden especially those that were not within their control.

They therefore advised the public and National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card holders to carry cash alongside their cards to pay for the cost of any service that the providers may not be able to offer immediately.

Mr Frank Torblu, the Executive Director of the Health Insurance Service Providers Association of Ghana, who addressed a joint press conference in Accra, said the advice to the government was based on the current pressure being mounted on their members by their creditors.

According to him, an alleged pronouncement by a Minister of State at a private television station, claiming that the government owed NHI Service providers only three months arrears, had created a situation for the Chamber of Pharmacy to cut supply of medicines and other medical consumables to Member hospital, clinics and maternity homes nationwide.

Mr Torblu said contrary to this the NHIS owed service providers between nine to 14 months which, covered arrears from 2018 for some providers, and 2019 for others.

He argued that the persistent narrative that service providers were unable to timely submit claims as the cause of the delay in reimbursement was untenable, as the Scheme had enforced strict time lines for submissions stated in the contract.

He said the two Associations were therefore demanding that the Finance Ministry as a matter of urgency transferred all monies due the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in connection with the 2.5 per cent National Health Insurance Levy, and 2.5 per cent Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) of workers contributions.

They also urged the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to publicly account for the total amount received on behalf of NHIA, and that there should be a full reimbursement plan by the Authority after deliberation with the PHFAoG and HISPAG, as well as an immediate review and adjustment to the medicine tariff to reflect current economic prices.

Mr Torblu said this, would enable the various Service Providers and Health facilities to provide quality services to their clients, particularly National Health Insurance (NHI) Card holders.

He also ceased the opportunity to notify the government about the persistent harassment of their members by SSNIT, GRA and the Electricity Company of Ghana, with hospitals, clinics and maternity homes with court action and in some cases closure.

He said the Association was not happy with the numerous court actions against its members by SSNIT and the GRA, saying “it is very sad for our clinicians to put their lives at risk to save lives of National Health Insurance card holders for which payment has not been received from NHIA, but to be put before court for nonpayment of Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and SSNIT contribution on behalf of their staff”.

He urged the government to call these institutions to order, saying these facilities could only function well if they received their reimbursements on time, and advised all stakeholders to treat these issues with the utmost urgency it deserved to pre-empt any imminent action by service providers.

Two girls who were reported missing on February 8, 2019, have been found, Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Afia Tenge has said.

Their disappearance which was largely attributed to a case of kidnap apparently was misconstrued.

According to DSP Afia Tenge, the girls who were found at a ghetto with their boyfriends were sexually abused and have been referred to the hospital for further treatment.

A joint police operation by the Gbawe Lafa Police and the Nyanyano District Police Command, on February 14, led to the arrest of four of the six suspects who were harbouring the two girls.

They have since been remanded by the Weija District Court until February 28.

The other two, only identified as Seth and senior remain at large.

    Details

According to a statement from the police, a report was made to the Odorkor police on 8th February by the parents of the two missing girls who left for school and never returned.

Whilst the police was still investigating the whereabouts of these girls in the earnest, it was established that on the 7th February, 2020, at about 6:50am, both victims left their respective homes for school at Mallam.

Whilst school was in session, the victims left the school unceremoniously around 11:00am to meet one Seth and Senior, now at large, at McCarthy Hills. Both suspects had sexual intercourse with the victims and later left them to their fate.

Later that day, Senior brother to one of the victims spotted them in a desperate situation and questioned them. They were unable to come out with tangible reasons and for fear of being reprimanded, they absconded and sought refuge at Gomoa Nyanyanoo, near Kasoa in the Central Region.

On the 13th February, 2020, an aunty to one of the victims received a telephone call from Samuel Otoo, to the effect that the victims were lodging at his end and rerequested for some changing clothes and more money for their up-keep since the girls had intentions of spending about a month with them.

Luck eluded them when on the 14th of February, 2020, around 10:30pm, a joint operation between the Gbawe Lafa Police and Nyanyano District Police Command, led to the arrest of all four suspects at their separate abodes in Kasoa. Two are on the run and efforts are still underway to get them apprehended.

All six suspects sexually abused the girls whilst harbouring them. They are being examined medically to see what assistance they can be offered as soon as possible.

  • SHS student dies after falling from first floor at Wa Amass

A 21-year-old form 2 business student of the Wa T.I Ahmadiyya Senior High School in the Upper West Region died after falling from the first floor of the dormitory block.

The student who is a native of Kachiau, a farming community in the Wa West District, has been identified as Kojo Issac.

Some students who said they saw him a moment before he died, while they were studying, told 3news.com that at around 11pm on 11th February 2020 they saw Issac getting down from his bed and went outside the room when his mates were asleep.

According to them, they thought he had stepped out to go and urinate, only to hear a loud cry outside but they rushed outside to see Issac lying on the ground with a fractured neck.

The House One Prefect, known as Sei who is also the school father of Issac told 3news.com he ate with Issac at around 10pm before they all went to bed that fateful day.

He said the Assistant Senior Housemaster quickly arranged a tricycle transport which is popularly called “Mahama camboo” in Wa to transport the boy to the Upper West Regional Hospital.

The boy was later transferred on Wednesday, 12 February 2020 to Tamale Teaching Hospital for further treatment but he died upon arrival.

He was buried on Friday, February 14, 2020 at Kachiau.

Sister of the deceased Matta Burgur lamented about the incident but said the family was informed about it Wednesday morning when he was being transferred to Tamale Teaching Hospital.

The authorities at the Wa T.I Ahmadiyya Senior High School would not comment on the issue when contacted.

    Experts Advice

Meanwhile, 3news.com spoke to some experts on what people can do to save lives in circumstances like the one that led to the death of the 21-year-old student.

The Head, Directorate of Trauma and Orthopedics, at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Dr. Dominic Konadu-Yeboah explained that falling from a story building onto a hard floor constitutes high energy trauma.

This, he also said, exposes victims to a high chance of cervical spine injury.

While explaining what needs to done in such a situation, he indicated that, the head and neck of the victim should be held still, avoiding all injudicious movements.

“This is to prevent a fractured neck bone from compressing the delicate adjacent spinal cord, whose injury could cause acute respiratory failure and or sudden death or permanent paralysis (wheelchair bound)”

He said, in the case of Kojo Isaac, he should have been placed flat with face up and the neck supported by placing any suitable objects on either side of the neck that prevents rotation or side to side movement of the neck during transportation to hospital.

An Orthopedic surgeon at Tema General Hospital, Dr Odei-Ansong Francis said cervical spine injury especially when higher up the spine is likely to cause the death of most patients.

And when also transported in a bad position may also cause death.

He said edema or swelling around the cord can also contribute.

A Surgeon at St. Joseph Hospital at Koforidua in the Eastern Region Dr. Wilfred Addo also said spine injuries are the number one cause of early deaths in injuries.

“Therefore it should be the priority of transporters to protect the spine during the handling and transport of injured patients.”

He listed ways it can be done in order to help the situation:

Cervical spine protection in neck collar, move the patient in log roll on spine board, provide adequate resuscitation, transfer to level 1 trauma centre where there is a neurosurgical unit.
