  • How Ghanaians are reacting to BoGs new GHC2 coin, 100, 200 Cedi notes

Following the release of GHC 2 coin, 100 and 200 Cedi notes into the circulation by the Bank of Ghana, a number of Ghanaians have been reacting to the news.

The reactions show that Ghanaians have received the news with mixed feelings and as expected, some have received the news with humour while others have done so with anger.

A careful sieve through the reactions, however, suggest that people are generally not happy with the introduction.

Some of the people reacting to the introduction of the notes are apprehensive, saying should the unfortunate happen for one to lose their wallet containing just three of the 200 cedi notes, the pain will be way too much to bear.

The Governor of Bank of Ghana, Ernest Addison, announcing the introduction of the new notes said they were meant align well with the needs of the people.

Read: BoG considering issuing E-Cedi in future

Meanwhile, the Governor of Bank of Ghana, Ernest Addison, has explained the rational behind the introduction of the new notes, saying they were meant to align well with the needs of the people.

“A lot of thinking went into the decision to introduce the higher denomination banknotes. The structure of the banknote should align well with the needs of the people who use it for their daily transactions.

“We need banknotes and coins that are convenient for most people to use, high quality, secure and cost-effective. Accordingly, in March 2017, the Bank of Ghana begun a process of conducting a thorough review of the structure of the currency including on the note/coin boundary and acceptability and use of the individual currency series,” Dr Addison said.

  • Smartphone ‘addiction’: Young people ‘panicky’ when denied mobiles

Almost a quarter of young people are so dependent on their smartphones that it becomes like an addiction, research by psychiatrists concludes.

The study, from King’s College London, says such addictive behaviour means that people become “panicky” or “upset” if they are denied constant access.

The youngsters also cannot control the amount of time they spend on the phone.

The study warns that such addictions have “serious consequences” for mental health.

Read:A harrowing heroin addiction grips South Africa

The research, published in BMC Psychiatry, analysed 41 studies involving 42,000 young people in an investigation into “problematic smartphone usage”.

The study found 23% had behaviour that was consistent with an addiction – such as anxiety over not being able to use their phone, not being able to moderate the time spent and using mobiles so much that it was detrimental to other activities.

    ‘Here to stay’

Such addictive behaviour could be linked to other problems, says the study, such as stress, a depressed mood, lack of sleep and reduced achievement in school.

Read:These 5 stress-relieving strategies work for even the busiest entrepreneurs

“Smartphones are here to stay and there is a need to understand the prevalence of problematic smartphone usage,” says one of the report’s authors, Nicola Kalk, from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London.

“We don’t know whether it is the smartphone itself that can be addictive or the apps that people use,” said Dr Kalk.

“Nevertheless, there is a need for public awareness around smartphone use in children and young people, and parents should be aware of how much time their children spend on their phones.”

Co-author Samantha Sohn warned that addictions “can have serious consequences on mental health and day-to-day functioning, so there is a need for further investigation into problematic smartphone usage”.

Read:China imposes curfew on young people over fears of video gaming addiction

But Amy Orben, research fellow at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit at the University of Cambridge, warned against assuming there were causal connections between problematic smartphone use and outcomes such as depression.

“It has been shown previously that smartphone effects are not a one-way street, but that mood can [have an] impact [on] the amount of smartphone use, as well,” said Dr Orben.

  • Pellegrini given two games to save his job at West Ham

Manuel Pellegrini has two games to save his job as West Ham manager.

West Ham are actively looking for potential replacements as they consider a managerial change following their slump under Pellegrini since September.

They have failed to win any of their last eight games in all competitions, losing six, and have tumbled down the Premier League table from fifth to 17th.

Their daunting next two games, at Chelsea on Saturday and Wolves next Wednesday, will now be decisive for Pellegrini who is under intense pressure to inspire a quick upturn in form.

More dropped points will leave Pellegrini’s side in real danger of falling into the bottom three, which sources have described as a likely tipping point for club chiefs.

Read:PL: Jose Mourinho gets first Tottenham victory against West Ham

Pellegrini has 18 months left on the three-year deal he signed when he was appointed in May 2018. The Hammers hierarchy are reluctant to make a mid-season change but may be left with no option if results do not improve over the next week.

Their reluctance is partly down to the compensation bill in the region of £6.5million which they will have to stump up if they part with Pellegrini and his staff.

They also have some sympathy for the Chilean who has seen West Ham’s sudden loss of form coincide with injury to goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

Fabianski is expected to be sidelined until after Christmas and his replacement Roberto Jimenez has endured a torrid time, a signing which has contributed to director of football Mario Husillos also being in the spotlight along with Pellegrini.

There is also concern at West Ham about their chances of obtaining one of their preferred targets. Former boss David Moyes, Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe and Burnley’s Sean Dyche all feature heavily in West Ham’s thinking.

Read:Mourinho not my friend or enemy Pellegrini

Intriguingly, all three are also of interest to Everton, another of Moyes’s former clubs, where the long-term future of their current manager Marco Silva is also in doubt.

Along with the competition, Howe and Dyche will also not be cheap as both are under contract.

Bournemouth, though, are aware of the interest in Howe and fear they will struggle to hold onto him if any suitors make a genuine approach to prise him away from the Vitality Stadium.

Pellegrini, a Premier League winner with Manchester City and who led Villarreal and Malaga into the Champions League against the odds, said: ‘More than ever, more than ever.

‘Trust the way you work. Because you have a career behind you. You’re not just starting a career.

Read:West Ham United: Missing out on Europe would be a failure, says Declan Rice

‘Continue to believe in what you know or which is the way you must find the solution.

‘I continue talking to the people who work around me, continue to try to find a solution, to continue to more than ever be convinced that what you have done in 35 years of your career.

‘I came here to do exactly what I did with other teams. At Villarreal, at Malaga. To make that big step, growing, and that will continue to be my pressure and my way to do it and the way I think is best.

‘You always have good and bad moments. In the bad moments, you must review a lot of things but you must be very clear. For me, it’s clear. We need a good performance, not to change it all, and hopefully we can do it as soon as we can.’

  • Referendum: The President himself says ‘YES’, what is wrong if I say ‘NO’? – Sefa Kayi

Astute morning show host, Kwame Sefa Kayi, affectionately called Chairman General, believes there’s absolutely nothing wrong with him campaigning for ‘NO’ votes in the upcoming December 17th referendum.

Speaking on his ‘Kokrokoo’ show on Peace FM Thursday, monitored by Ghanaguardian.com, the award-winning journalist said people ‘attacking’ him over his ‘NO’ position on the referendum should put an end to it as according to him, he only spoke his mind just as any other.

Read: Executive can withdraw Bill on referendum from Parliament Martin Kpebu

Chairman General said if there was something wrong with someone declaring his state on the referendum, why then will the first gentleman of the land, President Nana Akufo-Addo and Members of Parliament (MPs) publicly campaign for ‘YES’ or ‘NO’ votes?

“Even the President himself says his vote is YES, MPs have stated their positions. So what is wrong if I state my position as well?”, he rhetorically quizzed.

Read: President Akufo-Addo has no power to halt Dec 17 referendum Haruna Iddrisu

According to Sefa Kayi, nothing could move him from his ‘NO’ position in the upcoming national exercise.

“I’ve long stated my position to be NO. I started saying this about 3 months ago ..and I still stand by that”, he added.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians are also pushing for the postponement of the referendum, thinking it will allow some space for a national consensus-building on the issue.

  • Aids deaths reduce in Kenya by 60%

Aids-related deaths in Kenya have dropped by about 55 per cent from 60,000 in the last nine years to 28,000 last year according to the World Aids Report 2019 released on Wednesday.

Additionally, new infections reduced by 51 percent over the same period from 100,000 in 2013 to 49,000 currently.

The country’s HIV and Aids prevalence was at 4.9 percent with 1.8 percent (52,767) being new infections.

The report released at Garissa Road Primary School in Thika town by Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, also showed the Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) coverage had improved with 1.2 million people on treatment.

Read:UN reports Libyan guards shot at migrants fleeing air raids

Statistics from Africa showed that 25 million people live with the virus, with 24.5 million on treatment globally.

The CS said the results affirmed the government’s efforts in countering the epidemic despite the structural, economic and cultural barriers in accessing health care and shrinking donor support.

    Budget

“To address this, the Health Ministry’s budget has been increased by more than 50 percent over the last two years. Beginning 2020, the Ministry has set aside funds to plug donor cuts in anti-retroviral therapy and essential services. This is in addition to increased counterpart financing,” said Kariuki.

They will help in the Level one’s in psycho-social support and will become the first point of contact in treatment.

UNAIDS Executive Director Winfred Byanyima, said women between 15-24 years are the most vulnerable, with statistics showing that more than 6,000 women within that age are being infected with HIV every week, the status being high in Africa.

She said efforts must be made to safeguard the interests and rights of girls and women such as rape, violence and gender inequality,

She added that millions of women can’t access healthy sex precautions like condoms or contraceptives unlike their male counterparts.

“A girl’s first experience with sex is violent, forceful, that’s the reality. Chances of infections that time are high. Poverty amongst women also contributes to the high prevalence,” she said.

Acting Kiambu Governor James Nyoro said the HIV incidence in Kiambu was among the highest in the country at 4.5 per cent, with youths aged between 15 and 24 bearing the bigger percentage.

He said the community health volunteers will help in sensitizing residents and easing access to sex education.

  • UCL: Chelsea made to wait after dramatic draw

Chelsea’s qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League will go to the final game after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Valencia.

A win for either side at the Mestalla would have sent them into the knockout stages, and Valencia broke the deadlock in the 40th minute as Carlos Soler slotted home. Mateo Kovacic levelled for Chelsea straight after, but the half ended on a sour note when Tammy Abraham was stretchered off on the stroke of half-time.

Five minutes after the break, Christian Pulisic (50) had a goal ruled out for offside, but the decision was overturned after a lengthy VAR review. Just after the hour mark, confusion reigned when Valencia were awarded a penalty, but Dani Parejo’s effort was well saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea looked to be heading into the last 16, but there was another late twist when Daniel Wass’ cross (82) pinged into the back of the net via the crossbar to send qualification from Group H into the final game-week in a fortnight’s time, with Chelsea, Valencia and Ajax all in contention for two spots in the knockout stages.

Knowing a win would see them through, Chelsea began the game well and should have scored inside three minutes. Reece James put a sensational cross into the area and picked out an unmarked Willian inside the six-yard box. However, from close range, he could only send his header over the crossbar.

  • Chelsea must be at their best at the Mestalla against Valencia – Tammy Abraham

Tammy Abraham says Chelsea’s Champions League duel with Valencia on Wednesday is their biggest game of the season so far.

Frank Lampard’s side are locked in a three-way tie with the Spanish side and Ajax on seven points in Group H heading into matchday five.

The Blues sit second and, despite a 1-0 defeat to Valencia at Stamford Bridge in their opening game, a win would see them qualify for the knockout stages due to their head-to-head record against their two pool rivals.

Chelsea dropped to fourth in the Premier League after a loss at champions Manchester City on Saturday, yet striker Abraham ranks the Valencia trip as their most crucial of the campaign to date.

“For many of us, [playing in the Champions League] is a dream come true. We don’t want to stop now. We have to keep pushing. You have to improve.”

After their latest European outing, Lampard will prepare his side for West Ham’s arrival at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

Tottenham reached the Champions League last 16 after roaring back from two goals behind to beat Olympiacos 4-2.

After Jose Mourinho saw his side start superbly in the first half against West Ham, they began awfully and were lucky, as half time approached, to be just two down through a fantastic 25-yard strike from Youseff El Arabi and a close-range effort from Ruben Semedo.

Just before the half ended they got the luck they needed, as Yassine Meriah took an air shot at an attempted clearance and allowed Dele Alli to make the deficit manageable.

In the second half Spurs were a different side and Harry Kane got them level when he slotted home Lucas Moura’s pull-back before Serge Aurier put them in front with a superb half-volley following silky footwork from Alli and a, perhaps inadvertent, flick from Son Heung-Min.

  • Climate change: ‘Bleak’ outlook as carbon emissions gap grows

Countries will have to increase their carbon-cutting ambitions five fold if the world is to avoid warming by more than 1.5C, the UN says.

The annual emissions gap report shows that even if all current promises are met, the world will warm by more than double that amount by 2100.

Richer countries have failed to cut emissions quickly enough, the authors say.

Fifteen of the 20 wealthiest nations have no timeline for a net zero target.

Hot on the heels of the World Meteorological Organization’s report on greenhouse gas concentrations, the UN Environment Programme (Unep) has published its regular snapshot of how the world is doing in cutting levels of these pollutants.

Read:Climate Change impact on Agric in Africa excessive UNDP Boss

The emissions gap report looks at the difference between how much carbon needs to be cut to avoid dangerous warming – and where we are likely to end up with the promises that countries have currently committed to, in the Paris climate agreement.

The UN assessment is fairly blunt. “The summary findings are bleak,” it says. “Countries collectively failed to stop the growth in global greenhouse gas emissions, meaning that deeper and faster cuts are now required.”

The report says that emissions have gone up by 1.5% per year in the last decade. In 2018, the total reached 55 gigatonnes of CO2 equivalent. This is putting the Earth on course to experience a temperature rise of 3.2C by the end of this century.

Just last year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that allowing temperatures to rise more than 1.5 degrees this century would have hugely damaging effects for human, plant and animal life across the planet.

Read:Attractive Mustapha interacts with Climate Change protesters at Buckingham Palace

This report says that to keep this target alive, the world needs to cut emissions by 7.6% every year for the next 10 years.

“Our collective failure to act early and hard on climate change means we now must deliver deep cuts to emissions – over 7% each year, if we break it down evenly over the next decade,” said Inger Andersen, Unep’s executive director.

The report pays particular attention to the actions of the richest countries. The group of the 20 wealthiest (G20) are responsible for 78% of all emissions. But so far, only the EU, the UK, Italy and France have committed to long-term net zero targets.

Seven G20 members need to take more action to achieve their current promises. These include Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, the Republic of Korea, South Africa and the US.

For example, Brazil’s plans were recently revised, “reflecting the recent trend towards increased deforestation”.

Three countries – India, Russia and Turkey – are all on track to over-achieve their plans by 15% but the authors of the report say this is because the targets they set themselves were too low in the first place.

For three others – Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia – the researchers are uncertain as to whether they are meeting their targets or not.

Read:MESTI seek $2 billion to fight climate change issues

That leaves China, the EU and Mexico as three countries or regions that are set to meet their promises or nationally determined contributions (NDCs), as they are called, with their current policies.

Without serious upgrades to most countries’ plans, the UN says the 1.5C target will be missed by a significant amount.

“We need quick wins to reduce emissions as much as possible in 2020, then stronger NDCs to kick-start the major transformations of economies and societies,” says Inger Anderson.

“We need to catch up on the years in which we procrastinated,” she added. “If we don’t do this, the 1.5C goal will be out of reach before 2030.”

The report outlines some specific actions for different countries in the G20.

So for Argentina it’s recommended that they work harder to shift the public towards widespread use of public transport in big cities. China is urged to ban all new coal-fired power plants, something that recent research casts doubt on.

The biggest focus of action is the energy system. To get a sense of the massive scale of change that is needed, the study says the world will have to spend up to $3.8 trillion per year, every year between 2020 and 2050 to achieve the 1.5C target.

Read:Africans say their need for oil cash outweighs climate concerns

The impression that time is running short is reinforced by the report – and UN negotiators gearing up to meet in Madrid next week at COP25 are feeling the pressure to increase their ambitions on carbon.

“This is a new and stark reminder by the Unep that we cannot delay climate action any longer,” said Teresa Ribera, Spain’s minister for the ecological transition.

“We need it at every level, by every national and subnational government, and by the rest of the economic and civil society actors. We urgently need to align with the Paris Agreement objectives and elevate climate ambition.

“It would be incomprehensible if countries who are committed to the United Nations system and multilateralism did not acknowledge that part of this commitment requires further climate action. Otherwise, there will only be more suffering, pain, and injustice.”

  • Balotelli is black and needs to lighten up – Brescia president

Brescia president Massimo Cellino has found himself in the headlines once again after controversially referring to Mario Balotelli’s rocky situation at the club as “black”.

Balotelli had been dropped for the Serie A side’s clash with Roma on Sunday following a training ground incident that saw coach Fabio Grosso kick the striker out of the session, with Grosso hinting later at a press conference that his charge simply was not putting in enough effort.

“I demand great intensity and a high tempo in my training sessions,” the Italian said at the time. “When that doesn’t happen, I prefer to change and make the session tougher. He didn’t do that and was set to one side. At a certain point, he has to help himself.”

Appearing on Monday at a Serie A assembly, however, Cellino was asked to comment on the former Inter man’s situation, and sparked controversy due to the choice of words used.

Read:Balotelli suffers racist abuse, threatens walk-off

“What do you want me to say about him,” the president began. “He’s black. He’s working to lighten up but he’s having difficulty. We can’t think that one player alone will save the squad. That would be wrong for the team.”

The debate arose out of Cellino’s use of ‘nero’, a word that could mean ‘gloomy’ as well as ‘black’, while ‘schiarirsi’ can be interpreted as ‘lighten up’ as well as ‘clear up’.

Cellino’s comments come just weeks after Balotelli was subject to racist abuse from Hellas Verona supporters , with the ex-Manchester City star visibly angry as he kicked the ball towards the fans in question and had to be stopped from storming off the pitch.

With racism in Italian football seemingly becoming more of an issue in recent times, press immediately jumped on Cellino’s perceived gaffe, while the club itself did little to help the situation in a statement released shortly after the comments were made, claiming that the former Leeds United owner’s words were merely a misunderstood joke.

Read:Shame on you Balotelli slams racist abuse and those who deny it

“Regarding the quotes released this afternoon by President Massimo Cellino, referring to our player Mario Balotelli, Brescia clarify that they were a paradoxical joke, clearly misunderstood, released in the attempt to defuse excessive media exposure and to protect the player.”

To potentially make matters worse regarding the spirit around the club as a whole, Cellino also called out coach Grosso for not handling the situation as well as he could have.

“The coach was wrong because he only spoke about Balotelli and not the team,” he said. “I bought him because I felt that he could add value; instead he is becoming a point of weakness for overexposure in the media.

“He must respond on the field and not on social media, but he isn’t the scapegoat for the difficulties the team finds itself dealing with.”

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, has reiterated calls for the suspension of the impending 11 percent tariff increment for cargo handling at the Terminal 3 of the Tema Port.

The increment, announced by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) is expected to take effect from 2nd December, 2019.

Although the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority has explained that the impending tariff increment of 11 percent is long overdue to cater for inflation, increases in fuel prices, electricity and other resources used by the port and the terminal to provide services, the Importers and Exporters Association insists it is not needed.

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority in a recent statement said it has observed inconsistencies in some recent statements, publications and commentaries in the public space which seek to suggest that the Port Authority agreed for its private terminal operating partner Meridian Port Services to increase its tariff as a compromise to allow the latter cede 20% retention of container cargo volumes to the former.

In an interview with Citi Business News, General Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association, Sampson Assaki Awingobit, said the increment must be suspended to allow for broader stakeholder engagement.

Read: Importers protest impending 11% increment in cargo handling charges

“The GPHA should call on the Importers and Exporters Association and other agencies or institutions that are equally expressing their unhappiness about this 10.9 percent tariff increment to a round table to discuss and explain further. But they should not come out and respond in this direction.

I think it is premature for GPHA to have come out, it is not good for the GPHA ,it is rather going to harm the GHPA because it is not everything that we are pushing away, we are saying that the tariff increment is baseless and we need to meet and sit at a round table and discuss”.

  • General Legal Council wants court to dismiss law students’ case

The regulator of legal education in Ghana has described a suit brought against it by aggrieved law students as lacking merit and has proceeded to ask the High Court to dismiss it.

The General Legal Council rejects the claim it violated the fundamental human rights of the students in disallowing a remark of their papers.

Read: Lebanese embassy awards scholarships to law students

The applicants, LLB holders, sat for the entrance examination into the Ghana School of Law for the Professional Law Course in 2019.

They were, however, made to sign an undertaking not to challenge the results, a practice, the Legal Council says is conventional.

The students had asked the court to declare the undertaking not to challenge the results as arbitrary but the GLC denies this is the case.

The General Legal Council argues it takes all the scripts through a two-stage marking, signifying sanctity of the published results.

Meanwhile, critics remain unconvinced with the position of the General Legal Council.

US-based Ghanaian lawyer and Professor, Kwaku Asare, who is a fierce critic of the Ghanaian Legal system has blamed the regulators for the consistent mass failures at the law school.

In 2019, only 128 out of 1,820 LLB holders who sat for the entrance exam into the professional law course passed.

Critics have described the system as tyrannical.

But the regulators blame the students for the consistent mass failures at both entrance exams and the Bar exams.

The outgoing Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, who is the Chairperson of the Council, is on record to have said she would not superintend the mass production of lawyers.

Her critics, however, point out her position is warped, since mass production does not equal lowering standards.

A demonstration by Law Students Association to protest the mass failures ended abruptly when police descended on them, shooting rubber bullets and spraying them with water from their cannons.

The police received widespread backlash and their explanations received outright rejection.

But the Alabama boxer feels his achievements deserve more recognition.

“You’ve got to give me my credit,” he said. “It’s sad that it took me over 40 fights to get the recognition that I truly deserve.

“When people see me, they have never seen my style. It took them a while to get used to what I display, my talent that I present to boxing.

“It’s different to any other fighter. It’s not textbook. You can’t really teach it and that’s what makes me unique from the rest of these fighters.”

A rematch with Fury is slated for 22 February and the Briton’s trainer Ben Davison was ringside in Las Vegas on Saturday to see Wilder’s win.

Responding to Wilder’s victory, Fury tweeted: “Wilder has nothing more than a punchers chance vs me, I’m gonna school [him] even more than the first fight.”

  • Arsenal fans lash out at ‘rudderless’ board

Arsenal fan groups have united to issue a statement accusing owner Stan Kroenke of “rudderless” leadership, leaving the club “floating aimlessly”.

The #WeCareDoYou campaign launched in July as a protest against the Arsenal board with a supporting petition signed by over 100,000 fans who felt “a disconnect from the club”.

Arsenal fans booed their team off following a 2-2 draw with Southampton on Saturday, extending a run of six games without a win in all competitions.

Read:Arsenal fans want Thomas Partey to replace skipper Xhaka

Head coach Unai Emery has been given public backing by the Arsenal hierarchy, but is under mounting pressure to improve the team’s performances.

The fan statement made no direct reference to Emery, but reiterated their concerns about an “alarming and desperate state of things on and off the pitch that need urgent action”.

It read: “We have been told to ‘get excited’ and to support the team. As Arsenal supporters we have done both.

Read:Arsenal distance themselves from Mourinho rumours amid Emery troubles

“There exist many issues raised in our first statement that remain unaddressed by the club. While these matters have not gone away, it is the overall alarming and desperate state of things on and off the pitch that need urgent action and take precedence amongst our concerns.

“Until the club and especially the senior management structure is running efficiently, effectively and ambitiously, then few other issues can or will be satisfactorily resolved.

“The early optimism of summer, around what appeared to be good business and positive signings, has given way to renewed concerns about the club’s overall direction and the leadership of the owner. It feels like the club is rudderless and floating aimlessly, unsure of its destination.”

  • Arsenal start process of identifying Emery’s successor

Arsenal have started the process of replacing beleaguered manager Unai Emery amid growing dissension at boardroom level.

The pressure on the under-fire Gunners boss has intensified following Saturday’s 2-2 home draw against Southampton who are second from bottom in the Premier League.

Alexandre Lacazette’s injury time leveller saved Arsenal’s from an embarrassing loss but it still didn’t prevent a major supporter backlash against Emery, who has been told the team must improve or he’ll face the sack.

Read:I am still the coach Unai Emery rubbishes Arsenal exit claims

Sportsmail understands the club’s hierarchy are prepared to give Emery longer to prove he can transform Arsenal’s fortunes but the process of identifying Emery’s long-term replacement has started.

Head of football Raul Sanllehi and technical director Edu are keen to give the Spaniard an opportunity to improve results however, there are other members of within the club’s hierarchy who believe Emery should be relieved of his duties.

Max Allegri has his admirers at the Emirates, while Mikel Arteta, who was close to replacing Arsene Wenger at the helm before Emery was given the nod, could also come back into the frame.

Read:Ex-Arsenal midfielder not sure Unai Emery is the right man to lead club

This weekend, former Juventus boss Allegri has been strongly linked with Napoli with Carlo Ancelotti under increasing pressure at the Stadio San Paolo.

Intriguingly, Mauricio Pochettino, who was sacked by arch-rivals Tottenham last week, is well liked by key members of the Arsenal board – but the prospect of the Argentine agreeing to replace Emery given his connections to Spurs and the the Gunners’ transitional state seems remote.

Jose Mourinho would have been a contender to eventually take over from Emery – but he has replaced Pochettino at Tottenham.

Arsenal are aware attracting their preferred candidates will prove difficult mid-season, with that in mind a double-act of ex-players Freddie Ljungberg and Steve Bould who are both coaching at the club – would be considered a short-term solution if Emery is sacked before the summer.

Read:Arsenal distance themselves from Mourinho rumours amid Emery troubles

The club are reluctant to make a change mid-season and prefer to make a final decision on Emery at the end of the campaign but patience is starting to wear thin at the Emirates with the prospect of making a change now a emerging consideration.
