  • Wilder knocks out Luis Ortiz to defend WBC world title

Deontay Wilder defended his WBC world heavyweight title for the 10th time with a stunning knockout after being out-boxed by Luis Ortiz for six rounds.

The American looked set to see his world-title reign end just short of five years as Ruiz picked him apart for half of their Las Vegas rematch.

But in the seventh round, Wilder’s devastating right hand left Ortiz stunned and beaten on the canvas.

Read:Wilder v Fury: Stunning draw in WBC world heavyweight title fight

“I found my measurement, seen the shot and took it,” said Wilder, 34.

Ortiz, 40, made it to his feet but could not beat the 10 count and was left with a look of shock on his face as Wilder had barely thrown a combination or landed a punch of significance.

The defeated Cuban was left beating the ropes with his fists in frustration after bamboozling Wilder with feints and footwork, while boxing at the kind of timid pace he looked capable of maintaining.

He found repeated joy from his tricky southpaw stance with the left hand and after landing repeatedly on Wilder in the fourth, the champion beat his chest with both hands as he clearly knew he was second best.

But Wilder has built a reputation as one of the most destructive punchers in boxing history and his straight right hand chalked up a 41st knockout from 43 outings.

In doing so he moved level with Muhammad Ali in recording 10 straight title defences. Only Tommy Burns (11), Vitali Klitschko (11), Wladimir Klitschko (18), Larry Holmes (20) and Joe Louis (25) have managed to defend the heavyweight crown more times in a row.

  • Mane helps Liverpool beat Zaha Palace

Manager Jurgen Klopp says he has “no problem that Liverpool weren’t brilliant” during their hard-fought win at Crystal Palace.

Roberto Firmino scored the winner five minutes from time as the Reds maintained their eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

The Brazil striker poked in from a corner to restore his side’s lead three minutes after it looked as if Wilfried Zaha had rescued a point for the Eagles.

Zaha’s 82nd-minute goal was his first of the season and cancelled out Sadio Mane’s 10th goal of the campaign just after half-time.

But the Palace winger also wasted a great chance late on to score a second equaliser when he blazed over from close range.

Klopp said: “We know it’s a tough place to come to and we weren’t compact enough in the first half. In a game like this you have to make sure you are ready to fight for the result.

  • Mahrez scores as Man City beat Chelsea

Premier League champions Manchester City got back to winning ways by coming from behind to beat in-form Chelsea in an entertaining game.

The visitors, who had won their previous seven away games, led when N’Golo Kante slipped the ball past Ederson from Mateo Kovacic’s aerial pass.

At that stage City were facing back-to-back Premier League defeats which would have left them 12 points behind leaders Liverpool and given them an uphill task to retain their title.

But the hosts rallied and equalised when Kevin de Bruyne’s shot hit Kurt Zouma and wrongfooted goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Riyad Mahrez put the reigning champions – who move above Chelsea into third place – ahead with a fine finish after cutting in from the right wing.

Both sides could have scored more in a chaotic first half, City going closest when Sergio Aguero hit the crossbar after a poor clearance by Kepa.

There were fewer incidents in the second half although Aguero hobbled off and had to be replaced by Gabriel Jesus, with Pep Guardiola worried it is a bad muscle injury.

Read:Liverpool beat Man City to go eight clear at top of Premier League

Raheem Sterling thought he had scored a late third for City but it was ruled out by the video assistant referee in a very tight offside call.

City only had 46.74% of the ball, the lowest percentage by any Guardiola team in any of his 381 top-flight matches in charge of Barcelona, Bayern Munich or City.

They sit nine points behind leaders Liverpool, who beat them 3-1 in the last game before the international break.

“Chelsea are an incredible team,” Guardiola told BBC Sport after the game. “We knew it, but we beat them.

“It was a typical high-level game. Our back four played so good today. In the most difficult period of the game, we scored on the counter.

“We created enough chances to score more goals.”

  • WHO sounds alarm on Ebola due to Congo insecurity

About 360 people are at potential risk of Ebola after contact with an infected person in eastern Congo yet many of them are out of reach due to clashes and insecurity, the World Health Organization said on Friday (November 22).

Dr Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, urged the government and all sides to enable aid workers to access several areas where the deadly virus may be spreading.

Islamist militiamen killed at least 19 people in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, stepping up attacks on civilians in response to a military campaign against them in border areas with Uganda, local officials said on Wednesday.

Read:Uganda to send back Congolese Ebola patient as deaths exceed 2,000

The assailants, who the officials said belong to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan Islamist group, burned down a Catholic church near the city of Oicha.

Ryan said that although only 7 cases of Ebola were recorded in the past week, it was unable to stamp out the deadly virus due to insecurity.

“The difficulty we collectively face at the moment is just when we need that unlimited and unfettered access to communities we have lost that access in key areas,” he told a news briefing.

    Spread of the virus

“This is a very dangerous and alarming development,” he said.

Read:Measles kills nearly 5,000 in DR Congo

A male driver died of Ebola in Oicha, North Kivu province, after visiting three health care centres, Ryan said, adding that many other drivers had handled the body at the funeral.

“That one case has generated over 360 contacts which is a large number of contacts for any case. We know that person was highly infectious at the moment of death. That is why we are so concerned,” Ryan said.

At least 62 of the 200 contacts in Oicha were deemed at “extreme high risk”, he said, but aid workers had only located 19 of them. About 159 had fled to Kalunguta where most were being monitored.

There have been 3,298 Ebola cases including 2,195 deaths since the outbreak was declared in August 2018, Ryan said.

“By the time this Ebola outbreak in Congo is over the international community will probably have spent $1 billion.”

  • South African Airways agrees deal to end eight-day strike

South African Airways (SAA) reached a deal on wages with two trade unions on Friday to end an eight-day strike that has weighed on the cash-strapped state airline.

Already reliant on government handouts to survive, SAA had to suspend hundreds of flights after the South African Cabin Crew Association (SACCA) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) walked out on Nov. 15.

The airline said it might not make salary payments this month.

SAA on Friday said the unions had agreed to a 5.9% wage hike retroactive to April, to be paid from next February if sufficient funds were available.

Read:South African Airways cancels flights ahead of strike

Consultations on planned job cuts have been deferred until Jan 31, it said.

“SAA will operate a near normal service on Saturday 23 November 2019,” SAA said in a statement. “On Sunday, 24 November 2019, SAA expects to operate its full schedule as usual.”

NUMSA union members had put their income on the line to achieve the deal, spokeswoman Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said.

“As unions we fought very hard to negotiate a settlement which would be in the best interests of our members and we can honestly say this proposal is a reflection of that,” she said.

SAA on Friday also signed a wage deal with the National Transport Movement, a union which did not participate in the strike.

The government has spent about 20 billion rand ($1.4 billion) on support for SAA in the past three years.

But with ballooning state budget deficits and a sovereign credit rating teetering on the brink of “junk” status, officials are trying to rein in financial support for ailing state firms.

The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has published the names and photographs of some persons who have defaulted in repaying the loans they took while pursuing their tertiary education in the national dailies.

The first batch of 20 defaulters whose details were published in the November 21, 2019 edition of the Daily Graphic, is part of the over 20,000 defaulters who have not made any efforts to repay the loans.

    SLTF Act

“The publication is in accordance with the Students Loan Trust Fund Act 2011, Act 820 Section 2(1-7),” the Head of Public Relations Unit of the SLTF, Mr George Laing, told the Daily Graphic on Thursday.

The procedure for recovery of loan in Act, Section 26 (3) ,for instance, said: “If the borrower or the guarantor fails to repay or make satisfactory arrangement to repay the loan in accordance with the demand notice, the board shall publish the name of the borrower or the guarantor in a state-owned daily newspaper”.

Mr Laing said the publication was part of the name and shame policy of the trust fund to get defaulters to honour their obligations to the state.

“This is just one of the strategies we are putting in place to recover loans that are due. We will be publishing more names and pictures in the coming days.

“Once you take the loan you have a two-year period after school; a two-year moratorium before you start paying. When you start paying for each loan that you took, you have two years to pay back, so if you did a typical four-year degree you have about eight years to repay,” he said.

The SLTF PRO noted that in the case of those whose details had been published, they had completed their studies, failed to meet the two-year moratorium while the eight years repayment period had also passed, without paying anything.

He said the next course of action for those whose names had been published was to take them to court to recover the money, adding that recovering the money was very important since that was to, among others, make the fund sustainable.

The sources of money for the fund, Mr Laing said, were from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), Communications Service Tax, as well as from those who had settled their indebtedness.

“So if people take the loan and are not paying back then the sustainability of the fund is threatened,” he said.

The loan, he said, was not free government money and, therefore, advised all defaulters to endeavour to pay back.

    Background

More than 55,000 people owe the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) GH¢75 million, representing default in the repayment of the loans students took to cushion them while in school.

Out of the number, about 35,000 have made some form of payment, leaving more than 20,000 who have not paid anything at all, after the two-year grace period for repayment elapsed.

Read: Managers of Student Loan Fund to drag defaulters to court

The debt in the names of those who have not paid anything at all stands at GH¢35 million.

With some of the debts dating as far back as 2012 from the first batch of beneficiaries who took the loan in 2006, the fund managers had warned the borrowers that they would begin to publish the names and pictures of the defaulters in the national dailies in the coming weeks.

  • Johnson & Johnson loses vaginal mesh class action

More than 1,350 Australian women have won a long-running class action lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson (J&J) over vaginal mesh implants.

Australia’s Federal Court found that J&J subsidiary Ethicon failed to warn patients and surgeons about the “risks” posed by the products.

The implants were commonly used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence after childbirth.

The case is one of a series of lawsuits J&J faces over the products.

Some patients said they had suffered chronic pain, bleeding and severe discomfort during sexual intercourse after having the mesh surgically implanted.

Read:Johnson & Johnson reaches settlement with Ohio over opioid crisis

Judge Anna Katzmann ruled that much of the information the company provided about the products was “inaccurate” and at times made “false representations”.

“The risks were known, not insignificant and on Ethicon’s own admission, serious harm could ensue if they eventuated,” Ms Katzmann said in her ruling.

The court will set damages next year.

In a statement, Ethicon defended its record and said it would consider an appeal.

“Ethicon believes that the company acted ethically and responsibly in the research, development and supply of these products,” the company said.

Julie Davis, the original claimant in the case, welcomed the decision.

“They have treated women essentially like guinea pigs, lied about it and done nothing to help,” she told reporters outside the court in Sydney.

Read:Vaginal fluid transplants may soon be available in US

Last year, the Australian government issued a national apology to women affected by vaginal mesh, acknowledging decades of “agony and pain”.

    Mounting lawsuits

The ruling is the latest bad news for J&J, which is facing billions of dollars in legal claims over other products, including opioids.

In October, the company agreed to pay nearly $117m (£90.5m) to resolve claims over pelvic mesh in 41 US states and the District of Columbia.

It is also facing lawsuits over the product in Canada and Europe.

Separately, J&J is facing thousands of lawsuits from people who claim its talc products caused cancer.

The multinational was also ordered to pay $8bn in damages to a man over claims he was not warned that an anti-psychotic drug could lead to breast growth.

Despite the lawsuits, the company booked $20.7bn in quarterly sales in its most recent results, an increase of 1.9% over the same quarter in 2018.

  • Gov’t to order over US$150m GEnx engines for Boeing 787-9 Aircraft

Government has announced its intent to purchase GEnx-1B engines for its three Boeing 787 Dreamliners that will be used to re-launch a national airline.

The engine order is valued at more than $150 million list price.

Read: Ghana signs deal to buy six aircraft for new national airline

“GE Aviation is honoured to provide GEnx engines for the new 787 Dreamliners that Ghana will acquire to re-launch a national carrier,” said Mahendra Nair, general manager of the GEnx program.

“The GEnx engine has proven itself with the highest reliability and utilization rates that benefit our customers, and we look forward to working with Ghana as the country progresses on its strategy to re-enter the aviation industry.”

This year has been a big year for the GEnx engine.

The engine celebrated its 15th anniversary since its launch and marked the assembly of its 2,000th engine. With more than 2,500 engines sold, the GEnx has become the fastest-selling high-thrust GE engine in history.

With the most advanced technologies and materials, the GEnx has the highest reliability and utilisation, lowest fuel burn and longest range capable of any engine available on the B787 aircraft.

The highest pressure ratio compressor in commercial service today enables the best fuel efficiency in its thrust class, resulting in the GEnx engine powering the longest B787 routes, such as Qantas’ 787-9 record-breaking non-stop flight from New York to Sydney last month.

The GEnx’s innovative lean burning twin-annular pre-swirl (TAPS) combustor dramatically reduces NOx and other regulated gases below today’s regulatory limits and enhances durability.

Read: GACL staff ensure aircraft safety from foreign objects

As the world’s first commercial engine with both a carbon fibre composite front fan case and fan blades, the GEnx fan module is lighter in weight, corrosion resistant with less line maintenance and improved reliability, and is the quietest engine GE produces.

These leading-edge technologies and engine architecture bring high operational reliability and result in a high utilisation rate of GEnx-powered B787 aircraft for more flights per year and more revenue for airlines.

GEnx’s revenue-sharing participants are IHI Corporation of Japan, GKN Aerospace Engine Systems of the UK, MTU of Germany, TechSpace Aero (Safran) of Belgium, Safran Aircraft Engines of France and Samsung Techwin of Korea.

  • Suspected Islamist militants kill 19, burn church in eastern DR Congo

Islamist militiamen killed at least 19 people overnight in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, stepping up attacks on civilians in response to a military campaign against them in border areas with Uganda, local officials said on Wednesday.

The assailants, who the officials said belong to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan Islamist group, also kidnapped several people and torched a Catholic church during two separate attacks about 35 km (22 miles) apart.

The Congolese army began an offensive three weeks ago near the Ugandan border. The ADF has been operating there for more than two decades and is one of dozens of rebel groups active in the mineral-rich areas where civil wars resulted in millions of deaths around the turn of the century.

Several previous ADF attacks have been claimed by Islamic State, but the extent of their relationship remains unclear.

  • Mourinho becomes second highest paid manager in the world

Jose Mourinho has become the second highest-paid manager in world football after signing a monstrous £15million-a-year contract to become Tottenham manager.

It has emerged that Mourinho will earn almost double the wage of his predecessor Mauricio Pochettino after taking charge at the north London club on Wednesday morning.

This is the first time in Tottenham’s history that they have appointed a manager of Mourinho’s pedigree – he has won 25 trophies in his managerial career – and it seems they have paid a hefty price.

Mourinho’s £15m-a-year salary sees him jump straight into the list of the game’s highest earners at No 2.

He still trails nemesis Pep Guardiola though, with the Manchester City boss signing a new two-year contract in 2018 worth £20m per season.

    Read:Mourinho named new Tottenham manager

The Spaniard is the best-paid boss in world football but has proven to be worth every penny after winning back-to-back Premier League titles at the Etihad.

Below Mourinho in third place is Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone. The fiery Argentine has been in charge of the Spanish giants since 2011, winning La Liga in 2013-14 and taking the club to two Champions League finals.

Simeone earns a cool £13m-a-year and has a contract with Atletico until 2022.

China is renowned for paying big wages and it is no surprise that two of the top five highest-earning managers come from there.

Rafa Benitez takes home £11.5m per season with Dalian Yifang after joining when he left Newcastle over the summer while Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro earns £10m per year for his work with Guangzhou Evergrande.

Read:Tottenham to pay Mourinho twice as much as Pochettino

Zinedine Zidane shares fifth place with Cannavaro. The Real Madrid boss made a sensational return to the Bernabeu towards the end of last season and managed to negotiate a £10m-a-year salary.

Antonio Conte comes next with his £9m-a-season salary at Inter Milan. The Italian returned to his homeland over the summer and has started extremely well. His side sit just one point behind Juventus after 12 matches.

The rest of the top 10 is made up of three European heavyweights. Paris Saint-Germain’s Thomas Tuchel is paid £8m per season as he looks to finally end the club’s woes in the Champions League.

Ernesto Valverde may be surprised to see he is paid £2m less than rival Zidane, given he has been the more successful of the two in recent seasons. The Barcelona boss takes home £8m per season for managing Lionel Messi and Co.

The top 10 is then completed by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp. His side’s rise to the top of European and domestic football has been sensational and some would argue he is worth more than the £7m-a-year salary he earns at Anfield.

It is not clear which other items were demanded as bride price aside from the cow but Joy News has gathered that the man has been under intense pressure from the woman’s family, who insisted the man must present the animal to fully formalise the marriage.

But following his failure to present the cow, a brother of the woman stormed the village and forcefully took away the young daughter of the man’s second wife.

The incident occurred at Juopaa in Chereponi and the girl is being held captive at Kananmong near Yendi.

The girl has now been confined in a room belonging to the 40-year-old captor who has allegedly turned her into a sex object.

  • This comic relief is no longer funny Ablakwa writes on Volta separatists

MP for North Tongu in the Volta Region, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described the actions of a separatist group in the region as a “comic relief” which “is no longer funny.”

In a post on Facebook, the outspoken legislator said: “we must keep faith with the unitary Ghana project resolving to perfect the union by avoiding these distractions and focus on achieving our collective hopes and aspirations.”

“This obviously should be anchored on stepping up efforts for the attainment of the vision of true Continental African Unity,” he wrote.

Read: AG drops charges against Western Togoland secessionists

    Read his full post below

At a time we should be denouncing artificial borders, many of which are imperialist relics from the Berlin scramble for Africa; unfortunately, some compatriots seek to further perpetuate disintegration and Balkanisation by waging a most needless and unwarranted secession agenda.

It is trite knowledge, which is not lost on the agitators that the historical Trans-Volta Togoland transcends the Volta Region and covers many other contemporary jurisdictions across multiple regions and countries. Reason it beats my imagination how this became a crusade for the Volta Region.

We must keep faith with the unitary Ghana project resolving to perfect the union by avoiding these distractions and focus on achieving our collective hopes and aspirations. This obviously should be anchored on stepping up efforts for the attainment of the vision of true Continental African Unity.

Ghana cannot be fortuitously hosting the secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area, several decades after Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah mooted the idea, and yet be sending such embarrassing signals to the rest of the continent.

This comic relief is no longer funny; besides, it is totally unacceptable for a few secessionist elements without any mandate whatsoever to purport to be speaking for an entire region and declaring independence on our behalf. Enough!

Read: Western Togoland: Five separatists remanded on treason felony charges

I concede there are many issues we should come together and fight for in our region, and even more importantly in our country Ghana, however, separatist desires cannot be one of them.

Finally, let us be mindful of the greatest threat every human civilization has always faced: the unseen forces who exploit cracks to the detriment of an otherwise formidable people.

May God bless and preserve our beautiful union.

  • Australia fires: ‘Catastrophic’ alert issued to South Australia

Heat and winds are threatening to widen Australia’s bushfire crisis, with two states warned to expect their worst conditions of the season so far.

Soaring temperatures in South Australia prompted “catastrophic” alerts – the highest danger rating – on Wednesday.

Tasmania is also predicted to see its worst conditions yet on Thursday, though its forecast is less extreme.

Six people have died since last month in massive bushfires which are burning elsewhere in the country.

Those blazes – in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland – have destroyed more than 500 houses and prompted debates on the impacts of drought and climate change.

Read:Australia bushfires: Three dead and thousands forced from homes

Australia’s largest city, Sydney, was also blanketed by bushfire smoke on Tuesday, causing dozens of calls to paramedics for related health problems.

    Where’s the danger?

Fires in South Australia prompted emergency warnings on Wednesday as temperatures neared 45C (113F) in parts of the state. Winds of up to 90km/h (55mph) exacerbated the threat.

Officials switched off electricity to about 10,000 homes and businesses to reduce the risk of new fires breaking out.

“All areas of the state are in danger today, with the potential for fires which do start to be uncontrollable by fire crews,” a Country Fire Service spokeswoman told the BBC.

Read:Australia weather: January was hottest month on record

The southern state has endured its driest first nine months of any year on record, said Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology. No significant rainfall is forecast for the coming months.

In NSW and Queensland, officials warned that heat from the centre of the country could escalate blazes later in the week.

Tasmania’s threat level of “severe” meant that any fire would be difficult to control, said Bruce Byatt, an official quoted by Australian Associated Press.

Large areas of Australia are enduring a prolonged drought, creating tinder-dry conditions.

    Climate change influence

Scientists and experts say that Australia’s fire season has grown longer and more intense due to climate change.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, climate change had led to an increase in extreme heat events and raised the severity of other natural disasters, such as drought.

Last year the nation experienced its warmest summer on record. Official figures also show 2018 and 2017 were Australia’s third and fourth-hottest years on record respectively.

As the fires rage on, Australia’s conservative government has been criticised over its efforts to address climate change. Last year, a UN report said the nation was falling short of its Paris climate agreement commitments to cut CO2 emissions.
