  • 2021 Africa Cup of Nations: Egypt held as Ghana, Algeria win

Egypt were held to their second successive draw of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying as hosts Comoros, with Jimmy Abdou as captain, battled to a 0-0 stalemate.

There were also draws as Cape Verde took on Mozambique, Kenya played Togo and The Gambia hosted DR Congo.

Ghana and Algeria both made it two wins out of two as both won 1-0 away to Sao Tome e Principe and Botswana respectively.

The Group H win for defending champions Algeria came thanks to Youcef Belaili as he scored direct from a corner against hosts Botswana.

The Saudi Arabia-based winger took advantage of a strong wind in Gaborone to curve the ball over goalkeeper Kabelo Dambe into the far corner of the net on 14 minutes.

Read:Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers: Algeria crush Zambia

It proved the only goal of a foul-riddled match that ended with the home side down to 10 men after Gape Gaogangwe was sent off six minutes from time.

Fluid football was scarce on a hard, bumpy National Stadium pitch described by one commentator as “like trying to play in a car park”.

Algeria were without captain and Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez, who was excused because of undisclosed “personal reasons”.

After their 1-1 draw with Kenya on Thursday in their opening Group G encounter Egypt held on for another point on Monday in Comoros.

The Pharaohs, once again without the injured Mohamed Salah, began well with Mahmoud ‘Kahraba’ Abdel-Moneim firing a shot against the bar after nine minutes.

Read:AFCON Qualifiers: Bafana Bafana coach reveals plan to unsettle Ghana

Two minutes later they had another good chance after the Comoros keeper was ruled to have picked up a back pass only for the resulting indirect freekick to be blocked and cleared by the hosts’ defence.

Both sides had their best opportunities to break the deadlock midway through the second half.

Firstly Aston Villa’s Trezeguet was put through for a one-on-one with the keeper only to stab his effort wide of the post.

Minutes later Kassim M’Dahoma jinxed his way into the area and his shot was blocked a little fortuitously by keeper Mohamed El Shenawy’s shoulder as he dived to make the save.

The game was played in intensely hot conditions with the referee allowing official water breaks in both halves of the match.

It was also a stalemate in the other Group G game in Nairobi as Kenya and Togo drew 1-1.

Belgium-based Johanna Omolo gave the Harambee Stars the lead when he found himself in space outside the area in the 35th minute and his shot was hit with enough power to beat keeper Malcolm Barcola and fly in off the underside of the bar.

Togo’s Hakim Ouro-Sama’s headed home the equaliser from a corner in the 64th minute while his effort was powerful enough it was straight at keeper Ian Otieno who will be disappointed not to keep the ball out.

The result means Comoros are now top of the group on four points from their two matches, Egypt and Kenya are both on two while Togo now have one point.

The Gambia came from behind twice to earn a last-gasp 2-2 draw with visiting DR Congo in Group D.

Read:PLAYBACK: Sao Tome vs Ghana (2021 AFCON Qualifiers)

Cedric Bakambu gave DR Congo the lead on the stroke of half-time as he turned the ball on after it had been headed back into the box following a corner.

Eight minutes after half-time the hosts were level as Bubacarr Trawally plays the ball wide Hamza Barry whose cross is headed in at eh near post by FZ Zurich’s Pa Modou Jagne.

With 15 minutes left to play the Leopards took the lead once again as Jackson Muleka’s long-range effort was deflected into the net.

Baboucarr Jobe ensured an unbeaten start to the group qualifiers for The Gambia in injury time as he cut inside and shot into the far corner a pass from Barry.

The Gambia managed the draw with without three key players as striker Assan Ceesay, who scored twice against Angola, was suspended for two yellow cards while Ajaccio’s Ablie Jallow and Senegal-based Njine Njie Faye were injured.

There was also an injury time goal for Mozambique as they drew 2-2 against hosts Cape Verde in Group F.

Garry Rodrigues scored the opener for Cape Verde after just six minutes following a neat one-two inside the area and then his weak shot somehow beat the keeper who will think he should have saved the ball.

Mozambique pulled level on 17 minutes when Edson Mexer pulled down a cross from the right and his powerful shot left Vozinha wrong-footed and flew into the net.

Cape Verde restored the lead before the hour mark when captain Ryan Mendes headed home across the keeper at the far post from a cross swung in from the right.

With time running down Portugal-based forward Witi stretched for a shot from 25 yards that skidded on the artificial turf evaded the keeper and ended up in the bottom corner of the hosts net.

Ghana scored a second-half penalty to edge past Sao Tome 1-0 and take them top of Group C.

The Black Stars struggled to break down a resolute Sao Tome defence until just after the break when Emmanuel Boateng was fouled in the area to allow Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew to score the winner.

The result means Ghana have the maximum six points from two games, South Africa and Sudan are on three while Sao Tome are pointless.

The top two sides in 11 of the 12 groups will all advance to the 2021 finals in Cameroon.

Cameroon qualify for the finals as hosts but are taking part in the qualifying campaign to gain competitive match practice which means just one team from Group F will progress to the finals.

Kumasi Central Prisons has deepened over the last couple of years, it has been disclosed.

“On the average, we receive 30 inmates on a daily basis and the number of inmates was getting to 3,000, which was too much, so we decided to transfer some of them.”

The prisons officer said transferring some prisoners to other prisons, helped to decongest the Kumasi prisons, but he stated that more was needed to be done at the prison.

According to him, the excess numbers in the Kumasi Prisons was impacting negatively in the management of the place so he called for more decongestion exercise.

The journalists were in the prisons as part of a seminar organised for them by African Heights Foundation. The event was funded by Open Society for West Africa (OSIWA).

  • New Dagbon Peace Advisory Committee wants occupant of Nanton skin removed

The Dagbon Peace Advisory Committee has declared as uncustomary, the unilateral occupation of the Nanton skin by the chief of Zosali, Naa Haruna Tia.

The committee further described the decision by the former Northern Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), to seize control of the Nanton division, as a threat to the peace and security in Dagbon and Nanton in particular.

It, therefore, recommends that Naa Haruna Tia should be accordingly advised to vacate immediately.

The report, which has been intercepted by JoyNews, is a culmination of nearly five months of intense deliberations by the five-member committee chaired by chief of Kumbungu, Naa Iddrisu Abu.

The committee made up of three top Abudu chiefs, including the Tolon Naa Major Abubakari Sulemana (Rtd) and Mion Lana, Mahamadu Abdulai II, was necessitated by the decision of the chief of Zosali, Naa Haruna Tia, to take over Nanton after the Ya-Na selected and enskinned chief of Vogue, Vo-Na Mohammed Bawah Baba, as the new Nanton-Na.

In April, the Ya-Na Abukari II appointed Vo-Na M.B. Bawah to the Nanton skin but Haruna Tia, who was among some 22 other candidates, rejected the Ya-Na’s appointment and moved to occupy the town.

Escalated violent protests followed and the town was on lockdown for several weeks. Roadblocks were mounted and threats were issued to both the Ya-Na and his appointee.

The Zosali Lana himself claimed he has the favorite of the townspeople and called the bluff of the Ya-Na after accusing him of filling up chieftaincy vacancies in Dagbon with members of his Andani royal family.

After several failed efforts to get the Zosali Lana out of Nanton, including a recommendation by the Asantehene- which was ignored- the Ya-Na put together this committee on May 14, 2019, and endorsed by the government.

The committee concluded with three key recommendations to the government, which is the main enforcement body of the Dagbon roadmap to the peace plan, to take action immediately.

The committee also said it found the actions of the Zosali Lana to occupy Nanton as a “criminal offense under section 63 (a) of the Chieftaincy Act, 2008, Act 759, and must be treated as such by the law enforcement agents and the culprits duly held to account”.

Read: Police arrest scores over Dagomba Line clashes in Kumasi

The report copied President Akuffo Addo, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, National Security Minister, and several security agencies, unanimously recommended a forceful removal of the Zosali Lana from Nanton “should he refuse to listen to wise counsel.”

The Dagbon peace deal was brokered by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and his two eminent colleagues – the Nayiri Naa Bohagu Mahami Shariga and the Yagbonwura, Tutumba Boressah II, after more than 12 years of turbulent mediation talks following the 2002 incident.

The Northern Regional Minister and Security Council chairman, Salifu Saeed, declined to comment when contacted by JoyNews.

  • Health Ministry to push for subsidising cost of diabetes treatment

The Ministry of Health is to send a proposal to Cabinet to consider the subsidisation of the cost of treating diabetes, which is relatively costly.

Mr Alexander Kojo Abban, a Deputy Minister of Health, announced this at the 2019 International World Diabetes Day, marked at Apam in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region.

Read: St. Thomas Eye Hospital organises free eye screening on World Diabetes Day

He said there were also considerations for certain aspects of the treatment to be covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The Member of Parliament for the Gomoa West Constituency, however, advised Ghanaians to adopt healthy lifestyles and go for regular medical checkups to ensure the early detection should they get the disease.

November 14 is observed annually across the world to create awareness on diabetes and how it can be prevented, regulated and easily treated to avert complications.

The World Health Organisation defines diabetes as a chronic, metabolic disease characterised by elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which leads over time to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.

It occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.

Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Hyperglycaemia or raised blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body’s systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels.

In 2014, the world health body says 8.5% of adults aged 18 years and older had diabetes, while In 2016, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.6 million deaths.

In 2012, high blood glucose was the cause of another 2.2 million deaths.

Mr Abban said unhealthy habits such as poor eating, physical inactivity, alcohol and tobacco use made one susceptible to contracting Type 2 diabetes.

Type1 diabetes is, however, genetically acquired.

Mrs Elizabeth Esi Denyoh, President of the National Diabetes Association Ghana, said the awareness creation would not end on the Day because her association would keep liaising with government, stakeholders and other policy makers on better ways of treating the disease.

Statistics on Diabetes was very worrying so urgent measures were needed to minimise it.

According to the International Diabetes Federation, there were 518, 400 cases of diabetes in Ghana in 2017.

She said: “At the moment, Ghana is placed 5th in Africa on the World Diabetes statistics.”
” However, the worrying trend is that most diabetics are wrongly diagnosed.”

In 2017 alone, about 34,000 people were amputated due to severe diabetic conditions.
Mrs Denyoh said many health workers shunned practising solely in diabetes treatment because there were no incentives.

However, diabetes could be controlled if there were adequate awareness creation programmes and dedicated treatment from specialised health professionals.

Read: KATH gets centre of excellence in diabetes care

She appealed to the government to create a disability fund to assist persons who had been disabled by the disease.

There should also be foot care centres for treating diabetes of the leg.

Obotantam Nana Adu Effrim, Chief of Apam Traditional Area, who chaired the event, urged the Government to prioritise the treatment of diabetics because it was a major health condition.

He promised to do his best as a traditional leader to help create awareness on the disease and urged other traditional rulers, church leaders, Muslim leaders and civil society organisations to help.

The event brought together stakeholders, including health professionals from across the country, community health students from the College of Community Health Nursing-Winneba, community members and traders.

  • Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers: Algeria crush Zambia

Kenya held Egypt 1-1 and defending champions Algeria crushed Zambia 5-0 in Thursday’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Debutant Mohammed Kudus clinched victory for Ghana over South Africa while Mali and Guinea ended 2-2 after four goals in 19 minutes.

Elsewhere Comoros upset Togo, Gabon held DR Congo and Mozambique were too strong for Rwanda.

Algeria, who edged Senegal 1-0 in July to win the Nations Cup for a second time, finished strongly to humiliate 2012 champions Zambia 5-0 in Blida.

The surprisingly easy Group H victory extended the unbeaten run of the Desert Foxes to 17 matches since losing away to Benin last October.

Baghdad Bounedjah, whose second-minute goal won the 2019 final in Cairo, scored twice, with his first from a 68th-minute penalty giving Algeria a two-goal advantage.

Youcef Belaili, El Arbi Soudani and Bounedjah again netted during the final 15 minutes as the resistance of the Chipolopolo collapsed.

Ghana were impressive 2-0 Group C winners over South Africa in a Cape Coast showdown between former champions longing for a return of the good old days.

It is 37 years since the Black Stars won the last of four Nations Cup titles while Bafana Bafana’s only triumph came 23 years ago.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey thrilled a capacity crowd by scoring nine minutes before half-time and Kudus celebrated his first cap by netting on 80 minutes.

Aubameyang, who has scored eight Premier League goals this season, was held goalless in Kinshasa, but will have been thrilled after Gabon forced a 0-0 Group D draw with DR Congo.

Gabon have struggled in recent Nations Cup campaigns failing to get past the first round as 2017 hosts and not even qualifying for an expanded 24-team 2019 tournament.

Mali led twice only to be pegged back each time by Guinea in a Group A encounter that burst into life when Adama Traore Noss gave the home team a 56th-minute lead.

The Bamako crowd were then enraptured as Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita equalised, Sekou Koita put Mali ahead a second time and Sekou Conde scored to earn Guinea a point.

However Guinea’s game was marred by a dislocated shoulder for goalkeeper Aly Keita that rules him out of Sunday’s qualifier against Nambia in Conakry.

The 32-year-old Sweden-based Keita had started the match but was substituted in the 55th minutes just after Traore had given Mali the lead.

Horoya keeper Moussa Camara replaced Keita, who is due to return to Sweden on Friday for medical treatment.

Earlier on Thursday sparse crowd watched Egypt’sGroup G stalemate with Kenya at the Borg El Arabia near Alexandria with fans preferring not to make the long trek to the watch the Pharaohs.

Both goals were the results of errors first Kenya gifted Egypt, who were without the injured Mohamed Salah, the opening goal with a poor back pass from Eric Ouma three minutes before half-time.

His weak effort saw substitute keeper Ian Otieno rush out of the area but he was beaten to the loose ball by Mahmoud ‘Kahraba’ Abdel-Moneim who then was able to pass into an empty net.

Kenya’s equalizer came in the 67th minute as goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy and defender Ahmed Fathi seemed to get in each others way trying to clear a ball that fell to Japan-based Michael Olunga to fire home.

In the 81st minute Otieno let a shot slip under him but fortunately one of his defenders cleared the ball off the line, the resulting shot by Egypt was blocked by another defender before a third effort was deflected out for a corner.

There was a shock in the other Group G match in Lome as Claude Le Roy’s Togo succumbed to Comoros.

Comoros took the lead six minutes after half-time as Belgium-based Faiz Selemanie scored the only goal of the match that puts his side top of the group after just one match.

Mozambique’s Group F win over Rwanda was played in damp conditions in Maputo.

The hosts took the lead when Mozambique after 27 minutes were awarded a penalty for handball and Telinho stepped up to convert as he squeezed his effort between the post and the goalkeeper’s despairing dive.

Read:2019 AFCON qualifiers: Kenya move to top of Group F standings

The second goal came just two minutes later after some good work down the left wing and a cross that evaded the Rwandan defenders and allowed Edson Mexer to guide the ball home from close range.

A floodlight failure towards the end of the match only delayed the inevitable win for Mozambique.

The top two sides in 11 of the 12 groups will all advance to the 2021 finals in Cameroon.

Cameroon qualify for the finals as hosts but are taking part in the qualifying campaign to gain competitive match practice which means just one team from Group F will progress to the finals.

At least three people have sustained gunshot wounds in Bimbilla in the North East Region following clashes between a section of Damba celebrants in the community and some security personnel.

The personnel reportedly prevented the Nakpa Naa family from celebrating the festival at his palace.

This prompted the Nakpaa family to start burning tyres as part of a confrontation between the family and the security which eventually led to the shooting.

  • EU allocates GH¢306,000 to aid Ghanaian communities hit by recent floods

Following the torrential rains that battered parts of the country, the European Union has mobilised €50,000 (GH¢306,000) to provide immediate assistance to the most affected families.

The heavy downpour resulted in the loss of life, displacement of people, and caused damage to houses and farmlands.

A statement from the EU office in Ghana said the funding would support the Ghana Red Cross Society to deliver much-needed relief assistance to communities hit by floods.

“It is part of the EU’s overall contribution to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC),” the statement said.

Through this assistance, communities are to be provided with shelter, access to clean water, mosquito nets, and basic essential items, amongst others.

At the beginning of October 2019, Ghana registered continuous rains that caused widespread flooding across the country, combined with separate floods that hit the Upper East and West regions due to the overflow of the Bagre Dam in neighbouring Burkina Faso.

In total, 116 communities from 13 districts have been negatively affected.

It is reported that as many as 29 people lost their lives in flood-related incidents, some houses collapsed and others have been extensively damaged.

The statement said support will be given to awareness-raising activities in communities on the prevention of waterborne diseases.

  • Fight over Volta roads

There is intense debate over whether the government did not budget for road construction in the Volta Region when Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta presented the 2020 Budget Statement in Parliament on Wednesday

It was the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu in the Volta Region, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who started it when he claimed that the Akufo-Addo government was deliberately neglecting the people of the region regarding good roads.

Read: Omission of Volta Regional roads an affront to constitution Ablakwa

After the presentation of the budget statement which the minister said the government would use 2020 to fix most of the deplorable roads in the country, Mr. Ablakwa posted on social media a table showing roads to be constructed by the NPP government and claimed that there was none in the Volta Region.

“Why is provision not made in the 2020 Budget for critical road projects in the case of only the Volta Region? How does the Akufo-Addo administration expect particularly MPs from the Volta Region to explain this to our constituents?” he said, adding, “More fundamentally, how will government justify this aberration in the face of the 1992 Constitution which enjoins governments to undertake even and balanced development of all regions?”

Interestingly, during the budget presentation, the Finance Minister specifically mentioned the Hohoe-Jasika-Dodo Pepesu road which is in the Volta Region as one of the priority projects of the government and went ahead to say it would be done by the end of November 2020.

“Mr. Speaker, I am delighted to announce that we have received communication from Sinohydro that they have achieved financial closure for the first phase of projects under the Sinohydro MPSA, with Sinosure issuing insurance cover for the initial four lots (Tamale Interchange, Prestea and Cape Coast inner city roads, selected feeder roads in the Ashanti and Western regions and the Hohoe-Jasikan-Dodo Pepesu road,” he announced.

The minister also mentioned the dualisation of Ho main roads and the construction of the Ho bypass as well as the construction of Dufor AdidomeAsikuma road projects which are in the same region.

Read: Absence of Volta Regional roads from 2020 budget an obvious mistake Osafo-Maafo

Yesterday, Senior Minister Yaw Osafo-Maafo dismissed suggestion on Citi FM that the government was ignoring roads in the Volta Region.

He said the minister may not have captured all of the roads in the region during the presentation but the Finance Minister had assured him that roads in the Volta Region had been captured in the budget.

“For the whole Eastern Corridor road we are doing, most parts of it will be done in 2020. A lot of the Eastern Corridor road passes through the Volta Region so you cannot talk about roads in 2020 without talking about the Volta Region,” the Senior Minister said.

  • Ghana did not outplay us – South Africa coach

Bafana Bafana head coach Molefi Ntseki has explained why he was confident of beating Ghana in the build-up to the match at Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

South Africa suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Black Stars in their opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) 2021 qualifiers, but Ntseki said he still believes in his team and the players he selected for the back-to-back matches.

“I think let’s understand how we operate as coaches – you select the team and prepare the team to win. You can’t come to a press conference and say, ‘I’m in this game to lose’. I am still confident in my players even though we lost 2-0. If you look at the game itself, it was more balanced. As I said, they had more power and strength in getting the goals,” Ntseki told the media in Ghana.

The 50-year-old mentor shot down suggestions that Bafana Bafana were outplayed on the night, saying Ghana took full advantage of his team’s sloppiness in the two situations where they got the goals

“It’s not like we were outplayed in situations where we conceded. It happens in a game of football. When you are not balanced, the opponent takes advantage. I think I kept on saying yesterday when everyone else was trying to single out individual players from Ghana, I said they were a strong team and they’ve got a very strong history in terms of their playing capabilities.

“And as of now, I am still confident in my players and my team, and like I said, well done to Ghana,” continued Ntseki.

With Sudan beating Sao Tome 4-0 and topping the group alongside Ghana, Ntseki was asked of what he makes of Bafana Bafana’s chances of qualifying for the 2021 continental showpiece, and this is what he had to say: “In the qualifiers, you always have those situations where some of the teams in your group will win and you end up losing a match but I think we prepared the team very well for the back-to-back matches.”

Ntseki isn’t ready to start pressing the panic buttons as yet, saying he will assemble a team that will beat Sudan on Sunday afternoon.

He confirmed that Bongani Zungu will not take part in Sunday’s match against Sudan after being stretchered off the pitch with a knee injury against the Black Stars.

“We are fully aware that we were playing the first match in Ghana and the second match in South Africa. I think you saw everybody who was in this camp will be available for Sunday except for Bongani Zungu who has a knee injury. So, we have a balanced team. We selected a balanced team and I’m looking forward to playing the best team on Sunday and do well for ourselves and win the match,” added Ntseki.

  • France and goal-getters England join Euro 2020 big guns

The Euro 2020 line-up began to take shape on Thursday after big-hitters France and England qualified for next year’s finals alongside Turkey and the Czech Republic.

World champions France reached the tournament without having to kick a ball thanks to Turkey sealing their own qualification after a goalless draw with Iceland in the day’s early match.

Chelsea outcast Olivier Giroud then moved to within two international goals of France great Michel Platini with a late penalty that ensured a comeback win over a Moldova side ranked 175th in the world.

The scrappy victory at a chilly Stade de France put Didier Deschamps’ side two points ahead of Turkey at the top of Group H ahead of their final match at Albania on Sunday.

The celebratory mood was initially dampened when Vadim Rata punished abject defending to give Moldova a shock ninth-minute lead.

However Raphael Varane levelled for the hosts 10 minutes before break despite furious protests from the Moldovan players and their coach, who were convinced Giroud had fouled goalkeeper Alexei Koselev in the build-up.

Giroud then slotted home his 39th France goal from the spot in a confident manner that defied the fact he has only played 20 minutes for Chelsea since last month’s international break.

“I could and should have scored before the penalty. We quite simply didn’t get off to the start we should have done,” Giroud told French television.

Kane struck his treble in the first half as Gareth Southgate’s side racked up five before the break in England’s 1000th match, making light of the absence of Raheem Sterling, who was dropped by Southgate earlier in the week after an altercation with teammate Joe Gomez.

“We wanted to put on a show in our 1,000th game and with five goals in the first half I think we did that,” said Kane.

England displayed the firepower that will make them one of the favourites for next year’s European Championship as they sealed top spot in Group A.

Thursday’s demolition took them to 33 goals in seven qualifying matches following Tammy Abraham’s first international goal, further strikes from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Marcus Rashford and an own goal from Aleksandar Sofranac.

Kane meanwhile moved sixth in the all-time list of England goalscorers by taking his tally for the qualifying campaign to 11.

The Czech Republic followed England into the tournament after coming from behind to beat third-placed Kosovo 2-1.

They join former World Cup winners Spain and Italy, who kick off the multi-host tournament at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico on June 12, dark horses Belgium, Poland, Russia and Ukraine.

    – Ronaldo eyes Portugal century –

Reigning European champions Portugal were made to wait for their place despite Cristiano Ronaldo hitting his ninth international hat-trick in a 6-0 thrashing of Lithuania in Faro.

Pizzi, Goncalo Paciencia and Bernardo Silva rounded off an easy win that keeps Portugal second in Group B behind already-qualified Ukraine and one point clear of third-placed Serbia, who beat Luxembourg 3-2.

They will secure their spot at next year’s finals with a victory in Luxembourg on Sunday.

Ronaldo has now scored 98 international goals after a seventh-minute penalty, a superb curling effort midway through the first half and a simple finish in the 65th minute, and the Juventus attacker will be hoping to become the second-ever player to reach 100 this weekend.

The Netherlands and four-time world champions Germany will make add to an already mouth-watering lineup on Saturday should they make it out of Group C.

Ronald Koeman’s resurgent Dutch need just a draw at Northern Ireland on Saturday to guarantee a spot at their first international tournament since coming third at the 2014 World Cup.

Joachim Loew’s Germany meanwhile have to better the Northern Irish’s result if they are to make the finals.

Teemu Pukki’s Finland meanwhile stand on the brink of their first ever major tournament, with a win over lowly Liechtenstein in Helsinki on Friday enough to see them qualify for their first ever European Championship.

  • Appeals court hands Trump another loss, saying Congress can seek his tax returns

An appeals court has denied for the second time President Donald Trump’s attempt to stop an accounting firm from turning over his financial documents to the House, making it the second tax case Trump’s lawyers say they are taking to the Supreme Court.

The DC Circuit Court of Appeals said on Wednesday that a panel of eight judges out of 11 voted against allowing Trump to continue his appeal.
The decision is another loss stacked against Trump, after federal judges have repeatedly rebuked him and greenlighted the House’s effort as it also pursues his impeachment. The case, if Trump loses again with the Supreme Court, could deliver his tax returns or closely related financial documents into the hands of House Democrats.

The opinion reiterates the strong signal the court sent last month, when it upheld a lower court ruling that Trump’s longtime accounting firm Mazars USA must comply with a House subpoena of his tax documents and turn over eight years of accounting records.

Read:Judge orders Donald Trump to pay $2M to group of NGOs

Trump’s attorney Jay Sekulow said Wednesday that they will appeal the decision to Supreme Court, noting “well reasoned dissent” from three judges to Wednesday’s opinion.

In a separate case, Trump faces a Thursday deadline to ask the Supreme Court to block a Manhattan grand jury subpoena for copies of his financial records and tax returns. His attorneys have previously said they intend to ask the Supreme Court to take up the New York case.

And in yet another new filing in a third case Wednesday night, Trump’s legal team asked a judge for a two-week buffer period if the US House asks for his tax returns through New York state. Congressional Democrats countered in that court filing that they’d like to write an argument this week responding to this request and have an in-person hearing before the judge makes a decision.

Courts have previously refused to curtail Congress’ subpoena power.

The majority of the appeals court did not give reasoning why they declined to hear Trump’s appeal on Wednesday. But two judges, Greg Katsas and Neomi Rao, both Trump appointees to the federal appellate bench, wrote that they disagreed with the vote and would have heard Trump’s arguments again.
Katsas, who served in the White House Counsel’s office before taking the bench, wrote that he wanted a larger panel of judges on the court to hear the case, which he said presents “exceptionally important questions regarding the separation of powers among Congress, the Executive Branch and the Judiciary. ”

He said that because the records are “personal” and not related to the office of the presidency, the “unavailability” of an assertion of executive privilege “creates an open season on the President’s personal records.”
Rao, who also served in the Trump administration and also dissented from the three-judge panel’s opinion, charged that when the court allowed the subpoena to go forward it “shifted the balance of power between Congress and the President and allowed a congressional committee to circumvent the careful process of impeachment.”

She said that even though the House has subsequently authorized an impeachment inquiry, the committee in issuing the subpoena was not relying on impeachment power.

A third judge, Karen Henderson, appointed to the circuit by President George H.W. Bush, signed onto their reasoning.

The administration has continued to stand its ground against all efforts to obtain Trump’s tax returns. Trump has claimed that ongoing IRS audits have stopped him from making his tax returns public, even though audits don’t prevent individuals from releasing tax returns.
