  • Ghana’s Normalisation Committee denies holding RFA elections in dramatic ‘soap opera’ as injunction looms

Ghana’s Normalisation Committee has been caught in a dramatic web after the interim body denied holding Regional FA elections following a notice of injunction on the polls.

Lawyers for the FA appeared to be oblivious of the election of the 10 regional FA chairmen last Friday.

A third division side Africa XI has dragged the Normalisation Committee to court challenging the disqualification of one of the leading candidate Wilfred Osei Kwaku.

The FA ignored an injunction application and went ahead to organise last week’s regional elections.

The move appears to have put the FA in hot waters after lawyer for the lower division side Victor Kwesi Opoku cited the association for contempt.

However, in a dramatic turnaround, lawyer for the FA seemed unaware of the election of regional FA chairmen, forcing the judge to demand for a prove of the polls to be submitted on Thursday for adjudication.

The case has been postponed to 24 October, 2019.

The Normalisation Committee was slapped with the writ of summons and statement of claim by one Moses Dahama seeking among others a true and proper interpretation of the relevant GFA, CAF and FIFA Regulations regarding the disqualification of Mr Wilfred Kwaku Osei from contesting the GFA Elections is illegal null and void.

He has also asked the Tema High Court to grant an order of interlocutory injunction against the GFA, its assigns agents and representatives acting on the direction or instructions of the GFA from balloting or carrying out any activities under the roadmap for the 2019 GFA Elections scheduled for 18-25 October 2019 until the full and final determination of the substantive case.

He also want the court to order the reinstatement of Mr Wilfred Osei Kwaku disqualified as a candidate for Election scheduled for 18-25 October.

By this action the GFA NC is stopped from taking any action that will compromise or prejudice the outcome of the application for injunction before the High Court.

  • 2018 trained teachers to be posted by November – GES

The Ghana Education Service says it has commenced the process of posting teachers who completed Colleges of Education in 2018.

Only trainees who have written and passed the Teacher Licensure Examination, and are completing their National Service are eligible.

“Candidates who duly applied online will be shortlisted and postings effected by the end of November 2019,” the GES said in a statement on Tuesday.

    Read: GES releases teacher postings

“We also wish to state that there will be consideration for university graduates with Basic Education and Early Childhood certificates who have passed the Licensure Examinations and completed National Service as well,” the statement added.

The GES cautioned trainees against paying monies to persons who promise to facilitate their posting process.

    The Licensure Exams

The trainee teachers resisted the licensing policy when it was being introduced.

Trainees in Koforidua who were part of the 2018 completing class demonstrated in the Eastern regional capital, demanding that the policy not start with them.

The National Teaching Council (NTC) however, rejected their demands.

The council said the target group had a choice to either participate in the process or exempt themselves.

Executive Secretary of the Council, Dr Evelyn Oduro denied claims that government was rushing the implementation of the policy. On the contrary, she said teachers have been given ample time to prepare for the licensing regime.

    National Service

Again, the trainees resisted when the government said they had to go through the National Service programme.

According to them, it is uncomprehensive why the government will ask them to do national service while they have already undergone a one-year teaching service without pay.

The trainees told JoyNews during a protest march in Accra that, the government promised to post them once they have undergone the licensure exams.

The Education Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, however, told them they would undertake the national service if they wanted to gain employment.

“Everybody who has gone through the tertiary system does national service so you are going to do it…and if you do not do it, you do not get employed…so you are going to do it,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh added.

  • Patrice Evra: Jame Carragher apologises for Luis Suarez t-shirts

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has apologised to Patrice Evra for wearing t-shirts in support of Luis Suarez after the Uruguayan racially abused the Frenchman in 2011.

After a two-month investigation, Suarez was given an eight-game ban by the Football Association on 21 December.

A day later, Liverpool wore ‘Suarez 7’ t-shirts in the warm-up before their Premier League game against Wigan.

Carragher said the club “got it massively wrong”.

The former England defender was working in his role as pundit on Sky Sports on Monday alongside ex-Manchester United full-back Evra.

Carragher said: “There is no doubt we made a massive mistake, that was obvious. We got to the ground, had our lunch and then had a team meeting – I don’t know if it was the manager (Kenny Dalglish) or (coach) Steve Clarke – asking one of the players if he still still wearing the shirt and that is the first I had heard of it.

Read:Fati and Suarez show Barcelona mean business

“I am not lying and saying I wasn’t part of it because as the club we got it wrong and I was vice-captain. I am not sure who was actually behind it. I don’t think it had anything to do with the manager Kenny, I think it was the players who were close to Luis in the dressing room who really wanted to support their mate.

“Maybe I have to look at myself now and say I did not have the courage as an individual to say ‘I am not wearing it’. I don’t think everyone within Liverpool Football Club thought what we was doing was right but I do think as a football club or you as a family, your first reaction is to support them even if you know that they are wrong and that is wrong.”

Evra added: “When I saw it I was like this is ridiculous. This is unbelievable. You put your own club in danger when you do those things. You always have to support your player because he is from your team but this was after the ban. If it was before and we were waiting for the sanctioned, I would understand.

“What message do you send to the world? Supporting someone being banned because he used some racist words.”

What happened between Suarez and Evra?
In November 2011, Suarez was charged by the Football Association with racially abusing Evra in a 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield one month earlier.

Read:Suarez double put Barce Past Real into dey Rel final

On 20 December, Suarez was banned for eight games following a six-day hearing, during which Suarez was accused of using “insulting words”, which included reference to the colour of Evra’s skin. The ban was suspended pending an appeal. One day later, Suarez started in a 0-0 draw against Wigan, a game in which he hand his team-mates wore T-shirts with Suarez’s name and picture on during the warm-up, in a display of support for the Uruguayan.

Liverpool backed the player in the dispute, saying: “We find it extraordinary that Luis can be found guilty on the word of Patrice Evra alone.

“No one else on the field of play – including Evra’s own Manchester United team-mates and all the match officials – heard the alleged conversation between the two players in a crowded Kop goalmouth.”

Suarez told media in Uruguay that he “called him [Evra] something his team-mates at Manchester call him”.

Evra made his claims immediately after the match and was quoted as telling French television station Canal Plus: “There are cameras, you can see [Suarez] say a certain word to me at least 10 times.”

The Football Association’s report into the incident, released at the end of December 2011, stated that, after being tackled by the Uruguayan, Evra asked Suarez why he had kicked him, to which the forward replied in Spanish: “Because you are black.”

When Evra challenged him to repeat the answer and said he would “punch him”, Suarez said: “I don’t speak to blacks.”

Suarez is said to have used the term “negro” seven times in around two minutes.

On 3 January 2012, Liverpool decided not to appeal against the verdict, but the club maintained Suarez was innocent.

A Bangladeshi lawmaker has been expelled from university after allegedly hiring as many as eight lookalikes to take exams in her place, officials said on Monday.

  • 97-year-old bridge over Boyor River damaged

A portion of the 97-year-old concrete bridge over the Boyor River at Breman Kuntanase in the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa District in the Central Region has been damaged.

The bridge, which was constructed in 1922 and looked very weak, caved in at about 4 a.m last Sunday when a KIA Rhino truck with registration number GW 6827-18 that was carrying timber beams and travelling from the Asikuma direction and heading towards Swedru was crossing over.

Read: Bridge over River Pra restored

A part of the truck got submerged in the river and it took some youth in the town sometime to unload the beams and pull the truck out.

    Communities cut off

With the bridge partially destroyed, many communities in the district that use that stretch of road and are, thus, connected have been delinked.

Commuters from Agona Swedru, Agona Nyakrom, Agona Nkum, Agona Otsenkorang, Agona Odoben and Kuntanase, and other communities adjoining Breman Asikuma on the other side of the bridge have been left stranded.

Passengers have to alight at one end of the bridge and cross over to join waiting vehicles at the other end before reaching Swedru or Asikuma.

People travelling to Asikuma, who do not want to go through the hustle at Kuntanase, now have to go through a long winding route through Agona Odoben to Brakwa, Kokoso, Jamra and Benin before getting to their destination.

The Asikuma Odoben Brakwa District is well noted for the cultivation of many agricultural produce such as cocoa, cassava, vegetables, oil palm and plantain among others, as such, the bridge, due to its strategic location, facilitates the carting of farm produce to market centres.

The collapse of the bridge, therefore, would undoubtedly make it very difficult for farmers to transport their produce to Swedru, particularly on Mondays, which are market days in the town.

    Similar incident

It would be recalled that on September 17, 2019, the Daily Graphic published a story on the collapse of a concrete bridge over River Okye on the Breman Asikuma-Akyem Oda road.

That bridge, which was also weak, collapsed when the river overflowed its banks and is yet to be reconstructed.

As a result, several communities in the Asikuma area, as well as in places such as Oda in the Birim Central District and Akyem Swedru, Akyem Awisa and Akyem Achiase all in the Birim South District in the Eastern Region, have been cut off.

    Immediate temporary remedy

Because of the crisis, drivers from Swedru and Asikuma have created stations at both ends of the collapsed bridge as a temporary measure to transport passengers and their goods to their destinations.

Even though the situation has not come with increment in transport fares, it has brought difficulty to passengers who have to carry their luggage from one side of the bridge to the other to continue their journey.

    Several appeals

The immediate past Assembly Member for the Kuntanase Electoral Area, Mr Ebenezer Appiah Mensah, who spoke to the Daily Graphic, said the bridge over the Boyor River had been weak for the past four years leading to its state becoming critical about three weeks before the destruction.

Read: Bridge brings relief to residents of Kasena-Nankana; curbs drownings

He said before the last assembly was dissolved, he had made several appeals to it to take steps to either repair or reconstruct the bridge since it had developed serious cracks.

He said a danger sign was subsequently mounted on the bridge to warn drivers of heavy-duty trucks to desist from using the road but some drivers refused to heed the warning leading eventually to the destruction.

He called on the government to take immediate steps to reconstruct the bridge and also develop the main road in order to make transportation easy, as well as enhance economic activities in the area.

The Chief of Kuntanase, Nana Odum Essilfie III, urged the government to undertake inspection of bridges regularly as a means to identify weak ones and have them repaired or reconstructed.

The District Chief Executive for the area, Mr Isaac Odoo, and some technical staff from the district assembly, have since visited the scene to gather first-hand information about the incident and given an assurance that the problem would be given the needed attention.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, some commuters expressed concern about the lack of a maintenance culture in the country and wondered if the district assembly had been unaware of the condition of the bridge before the inevitable happened.

“The government must query the whole district assembly, including the district chief executive,” one unhappy commuter said.

  • NPP beats NDC in $135m Obetsebi flyover

The cost for the construction of flyovers or interchanges in the Accra Metropolis has sparked heated debate over which administration ensures value-for-money for projects.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is insisting that it has been able to cut the cost that will be involved in the construction of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange, unlike the then Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, which built the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange, popularly called Dubai, in Accra, at an exorbitant cost.

Read: Akufo-Addo cuts sod for construction works to begin on Obetsebi-Lamptey Interchange project

    Available Records

Available records show that phase one of the Nkrumah Circle Interchange — which involved two bridges on the second tier of length 170 metres and a total width of 17 metres as well as a total ramp length of 240 metres — was done at the cost of €74 million.

In the same phase one, the NPP government, led by President Akufo-Addo, is constructing a total flyover length (bridge and ramps) of 340 metres with a width of 18.5 metres at the cost of US$35 million at Obetsebi Lamptey at Kaneshie, Accra.

    Second Phase

In the Nkrumah Circle second phase project, the Mahama administration used a whopping US$170 million to build the Ring Road flyover with a total bridge and ramp length of 1.2km and a width of 24 metres, with three bridges over the Odaw River, two terminals, a water park and road works.

For the Obetsebi Lamptey second phase, the Akufo-Addo government is using €87 million to construct a total bridge and a ramp length of about 700 metres with a width of 18.5 metres as well as about a kilometre of storm drainage expansion works and road works on the ground level.

Read: President Akufo-Addo to cut sod for Pwalugu dam project

The total cost for the Nkrumah Circle projects under the NDC was US$270 million while under President Akufo-Addo, it will cost $135 million.

    Sod Cutting

At the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the Obestebi Lamptey Interchange yesterday, President Akufo-Addo said, “The construction of the Obetsebi Lamptey interchange will be in two phases. Phase one will consist of the construction of the East-West flyover and other related works, whilst phase two will involve the construction of the third-tier flyover on the Ring Road West.”

“The ground level will have a re-modelled roundabout, whilst the second tier will be an East to West flyover linking the Graphic Road to the Kaneshie-Mallam road. The third tier will be a North-South flyover on the Ring Road from the Royal house Chapel International to the Central Mosque at Abossey Okai,” he added.

The President said the construction of the interchange would help address the congestion being faced by commuters at the roundabout and would also help improve mobility on the Ring Road corridor.

“Critical drainage structures that go through the roundabout will be upgraded under this project. This is necessary to reduce the incidence of flooding at the roundabout.

“The interchange will improve mobility on the western parts of the Ring Road. It will help improve travel times to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and improve access to Abossey Okai spare parts area and to businesses along the Graphic Road and the Kaneshie-Mallam highway,” the President pointed out.

Continuing, he said, “I have been informed that discussions have already taken place between the Ministries of Roads and Highways and Works and Housing to ensure that the drainage works to be undertaken under this project do not adversely affect works to be undertaken under the Greater Accra Resilient City Project being funded by the World Bank.

“It is estimated that Obetsebi Lamptey Circle records a peak hour traffic volume of approximately 8000 vehicles per hour with a Level of Service (LOS) of F at peak periods. This LOS which is the worst rating is unacceptable.”

He mentioned that the project would be undertaken by M/S Qnueiroz Galvao-UK International as a design and building contractor, and the works would be managed by the Minister of Roads and Highways through the department of Urban Roads.

”We need food items to survive not mosquito nets and coils. Our children need food to survive”.

”Though we need mattresses and other items the most pressing one is food. Most of our farm produce got submerged and destroyed by the floods because the time the rains came, produce was ready for harvesting so when it kept long in the water all got destroyed, another said.

Another indicated that: “Food is all we need now, we are starving, we need food to survive”.

The Upper East region experienced torrential rains between October 1 and October 11, this year, leading to flooding, the collapse of buildings and structures, deaths, destruction of properties and displacements.

  • President launches exit pathway programme for NABCO trainees

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last week launched the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) Skills and Talent Academy (STA), an exit programme to prepare trainees for the job market after their three-year stint with the scheme.

The Academy would provide specialist training opportunities that would add value to the basic qualifications of NABCO personnel to enable them to transition seamlessly into permanent employment.

Launching the NSTA in Accra on the occasion of the First Anniversary of the inception of the NABCO initiative, the President said the NSTA programme would bring clarity to the exit preparation of NABCO trainees.

“This, ultimately, will deliver the requisite value-addition to the entry qualifications and competencies of all trainees, thus, making them both work ready and career-driven in their future pursuits.

Read:Prioritize NABCo recruits for permanent employment Nana Addo to MDAs

“The story has been commendable so far- nearly 11,000 have transitioned into their chosen future careers since deployment a year ago,” he said.

The President indicated that when the current trainees, numbering some 100,000, are about to exit the programme, present concerns over their future will be moot. This, he said, was because trainees, as a result of the STA, “would be equipped, and will thrive without recourse to NABCO planning their exit arrangements.”

The President lauded the contributions of the young men and women recruited under the scheme to the growth and development of the country. He said there were many examples of positive stories of invaluable contributions by NABCO trainees across all sectors of national life.

“There is hardly any sphere of our national life in which the contribution of our young NABCO trainees is not being felt…we are utilizing our existing intellectual infrastructure to resolve domestic challenges, in the delivery of effective public service.

Read:NABCO trainees really helping Ghana Akufo-Addo

“We owe them these opportunities to help them realize their potential. Not only does this assist with their growth, but it also helps to secure our collective future.

“One year on we have seen them work through their sacrifices and dedication to nation-building. They have put effect and truth to my prediction that NABCO will succeed,” he said.

Appealing to the Module Implementing Partners (MIPs) of the NABCO initiative to recognize and reward the sacrifices made by the trainees, President Akufo-Addo asked that they be considered first when employment opportunities came up.

“They should be the first to be considered when opportunities for permanent employment come up. Indeed, as the economy of our nation grows rapidly, largely as a result of competent management and appropriate policies, many more employment opportunities will be generated. Through what we collectively aspire to achieve, and the steps currently being taken, I am left in no doubt that we can be a nation reliant on our creativity, hard work, sense of enterprise, and spirit of innovation,” he said

  • Dementia in football: Ex-players three and a half times more likely to die of condition

Former professional footballers are three and a half times more likely to develop dementia than people of the same age range in the general population, according to new research.

Experts at Glasgow University have been investigating fears that heading the ball could be linked to brain injuries.

The study began after claims that former West Brom striker Jeff Astle died because of repeated head trauma.

It compared deaths of 7,676 ex-players to 23,000 from the general population.

Read:Meet the black French footballer who has been in coma for 37 years

However, despite the dementia risk, the study also found that playing the game increased average lifespan.

The long-awaited study, led by Dr Willie Stewart, began in January last year and was commissioned by the Football Association and the Professional Footballers’ Association after delays in initial research had angered Astle’s family.

Former England international Astle developed dementia and died in 2002 at the age of 59. The inquest into his death found heading heavy leather footballs repeatedly had contributed to trauma to his brain.

His daughter Dawn said she was “relieved” the study eventually went ahead, with her father’s case highlighted by former England captain Alan Shearer in a BBC documentary Alan Shearer: Dementia, Football and Me.

Dr Byamukama revealed this as Uganda marked Philly Bongoley Lutaaya day on Thursday.

  • Ghana Football has been retrogressing since 2014 – Andre Ayew

Ghana captain, Andre Ayew, says his country needs to improve its organisation if it is to return to the highs that saw it winning the U-20 World Cup in 2009.

Ayew, who led the Black Satellites to victory against Brazil in the final in Egypt 10 years ago, reflected on the triumph after the current senior Black Stars side went through another international break without any fixtures.

“We are very disappointed because in the last two international windows we did not have any friendly games and we don’t know why,” the Swansea forward told BBC Sport.

“We progressed really well till 2014 when we had some little issues. From then we don’t have to lie, we keep regressing.

“From 2009, if you look at what we have done, we went to the 2010 World Cup. We went to the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations we lost to Egypt in the final.

“In 2012 we went to the semi-finals, 2015 we went to the finals, 2014 we went to the World Cup so you could see there was progression.

Read:Ghana football will collapse if NC gets extension Kojo Yankah

“We were playing friendly games against big countries. We played England, Russia, big countries so that we continue progressing but since then we have lost that organisation,” Ayew said.

After their disappointing round-of-16 exit from this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Ayew says Ghana were hoping to use friendly matches to regroup and prepare for the qualifiers of the 2021 Nations Cup finals in Cameroon.

Ghana are in group C in the qualifying campaign, alongside South Africa, Sudan and Sao Tome. The Black Stars begin the quest for a fifth title next month against South Africa having last won the continental showpiece event in 1982.

Ayew – who is the current captain of the senior Ghana side – says the 2009 U-20 triumph was important for the country and that African teams must take youth tournaments seriously.

“Football for most African players is a way to survive. It’s a way to make the whole family eat so these tournaments are very important not only for personal life to help a player become professional but to also prepare the future of the country’s football,” said Ayew.

Despite Ghana’s lack of fixtures since Egypt 2019, Ayew said he was pleased to see other African countries moving in the right direction.

Read:I know the problem of Ghana Football Dr Kofi Amoah

“What Algeria, Senegal and Nigeria are doing is showing all other countries that if you want to win, if you want to compete for a tournament, it doesn’t come easy, it’s hard work, it comes with a plan. They have shown an example.

A few years ago, Ghana was the example.”His former team-mates from that triumphant 2009 success also shared his sentiments.

“While all the countries are having international friendlies, Ghana cannot produce even one friendly, it’s very bad. Look at the brand of Black Stars.

It’s a very high-profile brand and I don’t think it should have come to this way,” said Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu who now plays his football with Verona in Italy.

David Addy, who now plays with Ilves in Finland, said when they won the tournament they did not really understand how big an achievement it was.

“Although it helped us to sign contracts with big clubs we didn’t really feel like we did something great. We felt happy for winning it but now we feel this is big,” said Addy.

Ghana remains the only African country to win the Under 20 World Cup.

  • South Africa has no energy crisis – Energy minister

Just after publishing the wrong version of the Integrated Resource Plan, and with Eskom being forced to admit that more than a third of its infrastructure is broken and cannot be relied on to generate electricity on demand, Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe denied South Africa has an energy crisis.

‘We have no energy crisis, South Africa has an energy problem that will turn into a disaster if not attended,’ said the minister on the sidelines of the media briefing to announce the IRP.

Read:South Africa hit by power cuts

The Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) seems to be an acknowledgement by the government that it does not have the required skills capacity and the balance sheet to continue investing in the electricity-generating infrastructure of any significance.

Thus it has designed a plan that heavily relies on the simplicity, cost-effectiveness and speed of the private sector to fill the gap. And quickly, by government standards anyway. These seem to be the driving priorities that will inform South Africa’s energy investment plan for the next 20 years.

  • Tiger Woods hints he’ll pick himself for Presidents Cup

Tiger Woods said Monday his fitness was ahead of schedule after arthroscopic knee surgery, and dropped a heavy clue he might use one of his four Presidents Cup captain’s picks on himself.

“I’m probably a week early. My season had ended a little bit earlier than I had expected it,” the 15-time major winner told reporters at Narashino Country Club near Tokyo.

“I had the procedure a little bit early and got ahead of it,” he added.

Woods is in Japan this week to play in the US PGA Tour’s inaugural Zozo Championship, a $9.75 million event that is the second tournament of an almost $30 million Asian swing.

He then intends to round off his year by playing in the Hero World Challenge on December 4, before going to Australia to captain Team USA in the Presidents Cup which begins on December 13.

“I thought that I had enough time to rehab it correctly and be ready for this event, be ready for Hero, and I’m going to Australia either way whether I’m playing or not,” Woods said.

Read:GTDC launch 2nd edition of Centre of the World Golf Tournament

“I had it done and, as I said, it’s been nice to be able to squat down and read putts and I started going at it full speed again.”

Woods, who completed a remarkable return from years of injury and personal problems to win the US Masters in April, said his knee had been giving him more pain as the year wore on.

“It progressively got worse and got to the point where it was affecting even reading putts,” the 43-year-old Woods said.

Woods has a large depth of talent from which to make his four captains picks ahead of the match against Ernie Els’s International team at Royal Melbourne.

He admitted it hasn’t been easy. “I’ve been pretty consumed by it,” he said, adding his return to fitness made it more likely that he would use one of his wildcards on himself.

    ‘Tall order’

“It made me more hopeful that I could play this week, play Hero and play Australia,” said Woods, who has dropped one place to number 10 in Monday’s new world rankings.

“The way I was feeling towards the middle part of the year, it was going to be a tall order to be able to do it all.”

Read:Pro golfer Jarrod Lyle dead at 36

If Woods burns one of his picks on himself that leaves him the difficulty of choosing three players from the likes US Open champion, Gary Woodland, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, Kevin Kisner and Jordan Spieth, who showed a return to form at the CJ Cup in Korea which ended Sunday.

All except newlywed Fowler, who is on honeymoon, are playing in Asia over the next two weeks. Woods has to nominate his side directly after next week’s WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai.

“I’ve been able to communicate with all the eight (already qualified) guys who they want on the team and who they think that will fit on the team,” he said.

Woods also reiterated he wanted to come back to Japan next year to represent the US at the 2020 Olympics.

“I would love to play in an Olympic Games,” he said.

“Over the years, having friends compete in the Olympics, seeing golf be part of the Olympics, it would be an honour to represent my country in an Olympic Games.

“Hopefully next year I can have a good year and qualify.”

Before all that, however, he was taking part in a Skins Challenge on Monday afternoon against Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Hideki Matsuyama to kick off Zozo Championship week.

“Ghanaian shippers would thus be able to negotiate and trade competitively on the international market,” she added.

The forum, which was held under the theme “Addressing the challenges of exporters; the role of stakeholders in the export value chain”, aimed at identifying some of the critical needs of exporters and help find solutions to them.

It was also to help put into proper perspective how stakeholders add to the creation of competitive advantage for the Ghanaian exporter and fulfilling the buyer’s requirements.

Madam Bismarck said the government had declared an intention to transform the economy through its industrial transformation agenda.

The development of the new National Export Strategy, which is being spearheaded by the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), was expected to draw viable strategies to align with the context of the national transformation Agenda.

Mr Emmanuel Kwarteng, Kumasi Branch Manager of GSA, said the planned construction of a railway line to link the Boankra Inland Port, would make the place very active.

  • Barcelona v Real Madrid postponed because of fears over civil unrest

This month’s El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid has been postponed because of fears of civil unrest.

The match was scheduled for 26 October but there have been days of protest in Barcelona after nine Catalan separatist leaders were jailed on Monday.

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid disagreed with calls to switch the game to Madrid.

The clubs have proposed Wednesday, 18 December as a new date.

Manager Ernesto Valverde had said Barcelona were against switching the game to Madrid as they visit Slavia Prague in the Champions League on 23 October, three days before El Clasico had been scheduled.

And on Friday the club issued a statement saying their “desire” was to play the match as originally scheduled because they had the “utmost confidence” in the fans who they say “always express themselves in exemplary fashion” at the ground.

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane was asked about the postponement in a news conference on Friday and said “we will be ready to play on the date told by the right person”.

“We will adapt to what we are asked,” he added

Read: Liverpool faces possible expulsion from the English League Cup

La Liga made the postponement request because of “exceptional circumstances beyond our control” as more protests are expected in Barcelona on the day of the match.

Protests have continued into a fifth day in Spain’s Catalonia region with protesters clashing with riot police.

Hundreds of thousands of people waving pro-independence flags and chanting “freedom for political prisoners” took part in marches across Catalonia on Friday.

At least 96 people have been hurt across the region.

Catalonia is a semi-autonomous region in north-east Spain and in a referendum on 1 October 2017, declared illegal by Spain’s Constitutional Court, about 90% of Catalan votes cast backed independence. Turnout was 43%.

The nine separatist leaders were convicted of sedition over their role in the referendum and handed jail sentences of between nine and 13 years by Spain’s Supreme Court.

  • Nigeria’s Buhari saga: The fake wedding, the president and the family feud

Nigeria’s first family, the Buharis, are embroiled in a still developing story resembling one of Nollywood’s many Sunday evening soap operas.

It is a story about the president purportedly taking a second wife – a female cabinet member to boot – while his wife’s furious outburst hint at deeper issues. The plot was supplied by Nigeria’s vibrant social media and was aided by Mrs Buhari’s cryptic comments. The setting is Nigeria’s presidential villa, Aso Rock.

What’s all this talk about a wedding?

The wedding at the centre of the story that was largely played out on social media involves President Muhammadu Buhari, and one of his female cabinet ministers, Sadiya Farouq.

Read: Aisha Buhari apologises over leaked video

What we do know is that President Muhammadu Buhari is married to Aisha Buhari and has not said anything about taking a new wife.

Ms Farouq has also not said anything about the purported marriage.

It could easily have been dismissed as fake news and left at that but for a comment from Mrs Buhari.

    What did Aisha Buhari say?

She had been out of the country for two months with a stop in the UK for a medical check-up. Her return on Saturday was taken by those following the story as a sign that she had come back to “defend her territory”.

Her response when asked about the wedding at the airport did little to extinguish rumours that the president was taking another wife.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, the first lady offered confirmation, albeit in a very cryptic way, that there had indeed been plans for President Buhari to take a second wife, by referring to a “promise of marriage”. She also said that the purported bride-to-be was disappointed the marriage hadn’t taken place.

Mrs Buhari said: “The person that promised her marriage didn’t know it wasn’t going to happen. She [believed to be Ms Farouq] didn’t deny the marriage until the day passed.”

She spoke entirely in Hausa, measuring her words and mentioning no names. But it was clear from listening to the interview that Mrs Buhari was upset that Ms Farouq hadn’t publicly denied rumours of the marriage.

    Aisha

Though unofficial, the First Lady position of Nigeria wields political power

To further complicate matters, the minister’s Twitter account denied commenting on rumours of the marriage, refuting claims made by a fake account in her name that had actually denied the rumours.

The minister’s account tweeted: “It has come to my attention that a fake Twitter account @Sadiya_farouq_ has been created in my name.

“I wish to inform my followers and well-meaning Nigerians to disregard the handle and any information posted on it. My official Twitter handle remains @Sadiya_farouq”.

Some say she missed an opportunity to quash the rumours with a firm denial.

    So who is Sadiya Farouq?

At 45 years, she is one of the younger ministers in Mr Buhari’s cabinet and heads the newly created Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management & Social Development.

Little was known of her before she was appointed by Mr Buhari in August to lead the newly created ministry. The creation of a new ministry and her appointment came as a surprise to many, but those who know her say she’s been a staunch supporter of the president for decades.

She was head of the country’s National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and was a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, where she was in charge of election planning and monitoring, field operations, and fundraising.

    So was there a wedding?

    No.

The wedding was supposed to have been planned last Friday, 11 October, but the Twitter account of Sadiya Farouq showed she was far away in the Swiss city of Geneva from Thursday, leading Nigeria’s delegation to a meeting of the United Nations refugees agency.

She did not return to Nigeria until Tuesday, based on what she posted on the same account.

But that didn’t deter Nigeria’s social media users, especially on Twitter, from providing the guest list, a venue and entertainment.

This user even designed the wedding card:

A Nigerian wedding is not complete without an aso-ebi, the colourful attire worn by close friends and family on the day. This user recycled an old photo not related to a wedding:

And what’s all this about a family feud?

A sub-plot to the fake wedding story is the strained relations between different members of the wider Buhari family.

We now know, courtesy of that BBC Hausa interview, that a viral video that circulated on social media of Aisha Buhari in an angry outburst was genuine. She confirmed the authenticity of the video which she said was recorded by a relative of the president who lives in Aso Rock, some time in 2018.

Read: Buhari heads to SA for state visit

Mrs Buhari says the video was filmed by Fatima Daura, daughter of Mamman Daura. He is Mr Buhari’s nephew and has been a close associate of the president. He holds no official position in the government but is widely believed to wield huge influence over the government.

He was even given an apartment – The Glass House – in the presidential villa that was the scene of the outburst in the video.

According to Mrs Buhari: “They shot the video in front of my security and everybody there. She [Fatima Daura] was actually recording the whole thing right in front of me and was laughing and mocking me.

“They did that because my husband sacked them from the house. He told them to get all their belongings and leave the house for my son [Yusuf] to occupy.

Fatima Daura had responded to Mrs Buhari’s interview, saying: “If one reasons well, he or she will understand that it is not possible to say that the wife of the president is denied access to her apartment.”

Nigeria’s presidency is yet to say anything about the video but on Wednesday, Mrs Buhari posted an apology on Instagram, saying: “I use the opportunity to apologise for the embarrassment I might have caused my children, my immediate family members, well meaning Nigerians and the institution I represent, on the circulated leaked video clip”.

Aisha Buhari didn’t say who was planning the marriage, but it is clear she knows who it was. Some people are speculating that her willingness to confirm the authenticity of a video from 2018, in which she mentioned Mamman Daura and his daughter Fatima, was another cryptic message.

Ms Daura denies that a wedding was being planned, telling BBC Hausa that both her father and the president are “monogamists”. She also said that “the kind of power and influence that is being ascribed to my father is only attributable to God”.

So is the wedding still on the cards?

That would depend on if it was on the cards in the first place.

If people were planning it, they might not have altogether abandoned those plans.

If there’s anyone who would know the signs of a new marriage in the making, then it’s Mrs Buhari. She married the president after he divorced his first wife in 1988. The president is known as a monogamist but as a Muslim, he is allowed to take up to four wives.

Mrs Buhari was clearly referring to Ms Farouq as the intended bride in the BBC Hausa interview and the fact that neither the minister or the president have said anything about the rumoured marriage has many wondering if, like a true Nollywood soap, this story might have a sequel.

  • Chief Justice under fire over ‘quality lawyers’ comment

The Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, has come a under a barrage of criticisms for reiterating her stance that legal education will not be opened up to more people because that will compromise the quality of lawyers trained.

Speaking at the 2019 University of Ghana Alumni Lectures under the theme: “Questing for Excellence”, she argued that Ghana needed quality lawyers not lots of lawyers, repeating for the umpteenth time, her argument that allowing many people to train as lawyers will lead to having bad quality lawyers.

Read: Chief Justice blames lawyers, judicial officers for delays in justice delivery

But many have disagreed with her, notably Professor Kwaku Asare, a renowned Lawyer and Professor of Accounting. He wrote in reaction to her comments on Facebook: ” There Ohemaa Sophia goes again with her false dilemma —- “we need good lawyers, not lots of lawyers. Ohemaa, for your information, it is both possible and desirable to produce lots of good lawyers as happens in most countries that value justice. Innovation, technology and strategic thinking easily allow for both high quality and “mass production”!

Cuba is an example of a country that has shown that with proper planning and progressive leadership, a country can mass produce high quality doctors whose services are in high demand worldwide, including in Ghana where we are being told quality lawyers means we must deny thousands of law graduates a mere opportunity to prove that they can pass the Bar examination.

Read: We need good lawyers, not lots of lawyers Chief Justice hits back

Failed thinking and leadership should not be allowed to coerce us into thinking that only 128 out of 1820 law graduates in this country are qualified to study civil procedure, evidence, legal accounting etc.

128/1820 is a scam and a sham and it will not stand no matter how many times Ohemaa Sophia screams about her remarkably false choice between quality and quantity…”

Many others agree with him and have taken the Chief Justice to the cleaners over the comments.

  • I never knew Oppong Nkrumah, Amewu, others are NDC members – Kwesi Pratt to NPP

Kwesi Pratt has accused Oppong Nkrumah, Amewu and others of being members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stating that their move to welcome the PDS deal and engage shareholders, shows their inconsistency and incompetence as government appointees.

He said following the charade of suspending PDS and their hypocritical comments, one would not expect government to engage further with the deal.

“In fact, amazing things do happen in this country. If not for my good friend Kamal Deen, I wouldn’t have known Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, KT Hammond, Peter Amewu and Kennedy Agyapon were all NDC members.”

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says they have discovered a letter of a new deal between the government and a new company called Meridian Power Ventures Limited in Hong Kong.

Addressing the press on Thursday, the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah popularly known as General Mosquito said: “since the negotiation for the turnover of the ECG assets and facilities, after the PDS consortium declared the preferred bidder in the ECG concession, there have been several issues that have arisen in connection with the management and governance of the ECG concession, as well as Board of PDS which unfortunately have not been fully addressed, including the prolonged suspension of the license of PDS and the ECG concession and the issues on the demand guarantee.”

According to him, “any further delay on this issue will be prejudicial to the best interest of all stakeholders, especially the electricity consumers of Ghana. We will like to give the assurance that we will act with dispatch to immediately resolve and address these issues in the Special Board Meeting that we called for which we trust will enable the immediate restring of the PDS board and management towards a more effective governance structure and management. We are calling on the government to come out because there are very serious constitutional issues that have been raised on this matter”.

The NPP in response has described the letter as fake.

Kamal Deen, Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, speaking on Peace FM morning show Kokrokoo, said “the NDC of late has assumed some position of always trying to look bad” and added that the “authenticity of the letter sighted by the NDC is in question”.

“The position of the government is that PDS remains suspended” he further indicated.

However, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, the Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper speaking on the same platform, had a different view.

  • Saved by the bell! How I almost poisoned myself, 2 children over cheating husband

People marry for different reasons. In instances where expectations are not met, some walk away with disappointments and gnashing of teeth.

In extreme cases, some who are unable to bear the agony, take steps to commit suicide as they see the act as the best way to end their woes. This is the story of a Ghanaian woman, who tried taking her life and that of her two children on March 13, 2019, according to a post Ghanaweb has sighted.

The woman only known as Annita, who shared her story to Relationship coach, David Papa Bondze-Mbir on Facebook, was saved by a knock on her door by two gentlemen who happened to be in her house at that hour, just to promote their products, Longrich.

Annita chose to end her life and that of her children because her husband of 5 years neglected her and the kids. According to her, the husband was seeing another woman, though he knew she had given birth through the caesarian section.

“Dave, this man would leave me with two little babies even in my condition and refuse to pick my calls when I need help. Sometimes the kids would be crying of hunger and I won’t even be able to get up from bed to breastfeed or to feed the other one.

I eventually had a little support from an old woman. She spent a few days with us and left. I gathered the strength and started doing things on my own. I could not carry a bucket of water to the bathroom, so I would tie my tummy with a big bedsheet, use a small cup to fetch it, walk slowly to pour it into the bucket in the bathroom until it’s full – just to bath myself and the kids… And this takes me like 45 minutes,” she said.

Annita, who has a background in Business Administration, explained that she had to quit her job early years into the marriage to join her husband, which she added was the beginning of her agony.

Her husband who thinks, being a responsible father and husband is just by buying diapers and leaving GHC40 as feeding money for the family of 3, sees Annita as an ingrate whenever she voiced her concerns.

Her story has been shared by over 100 people and generated lots of conversation on social media, Ghanaweb has monitored.

An update also shows, social media users touched by her narration have started contributing money to aid her start life anew.

“I grew up with responsible parents who taught me that marriage is a beautiful thing until I got into it. I dated my husband for five years, and all through those years of dating I never bothered him with my needs and wants. I had a business running while I was in the university and I had enough money to take care of myself even without the support of my parents. I actually supported this my husband when he needed help.

Fast forward: We got married and had our first child. I got pregnant again just after three months. Things were not easy at all. We didn’t have any relatives in town to assist me we the babies. Note, I had both babies through caesarian section. And that was two major operations just in one year. The healing process was long and unbearable. This was the time I discovered who really I got married to.

Sometimes we go days without bathing. This man never cared how we survived each day. He comes back late after midnight, sleeps, gets up and goes out and sometimes, doesn’t even sleep at home.

Later, I found a way to report him to my family. He said he didn’t see anything wrong with what he was doing and that his duty was to buy diapers and not to help in chores. I endured it all. I sent the kids to school even before they turned two years, just so I could get a job to take care of myself and the kids. He has never bought a dress or a shoe for the kids, not to talk of me. The only thing he buys is diapers and nothing more. But because I am used to taking care of myself even before I married him, I kept doing everything for the kids even without his support. And it’s not like he doesn’t earn oooh; he has a good job which pays him well and he spends well on the women he is dating (when I found out he was cheating with three different women)

So I got a job (the salary was not really good) but I had no choice. And since I moved to a different town after marriage, it affected me as I had to start everything all over again, get to know new people ,etc.

The worst happened as our salaries were no longer being paid at work due to a huge financial crises which the company was going through. We had not been paid for eight months and I had already exhausted every saving I had. I resigned and as I didn’t have any money to fend for myself and the kids, I had to rely on my husband.

Hmmm! Now I have to pause and wipe my tears before I continue.

So he starts giving me 40gh a week. This is the same money I have to buy prepaid from, buy diapers, buy snacks for the kids, cook, and take a taxi to send them to school and back. He was virtually staying with his girlfriend and didn’t even eat at home. He said since he is no longer eating at home, the 40gh should be enough for us. This is the same 40gh that I have to buy laundry soap, gas for cooking, and other needs from. I am not even mentioning hospital bills because he will tell you ‘that is why they have health insurance card’ .

It was difficult for me to even complain to my parents, because they warned me about this same guy and I still insisted on marrying him.

So one afternoon, the thought of suicide dawned on me. I bought rat poison and decided to poison myself and the kids. Prior to that decision, my mom had a dream about me. She said she dreamt I died in an accident with the kids, and my sisters also had the same dream in just one night. They pleaded with me to go to church, and also, pray about it

In my head, I said ‘even the Sunday will not come to meet us’. I cooked indomie and mixed it with the poison. I switched off my phone, wrote a short note on a piece of paper, and was about to feed the kids and behold, there was a knock on the door. It was some two guys who were selling Longrich products. I told them I was not interested and asked them to leave, but one of them insisted and even asked for a seat and a cup of water. So I went in, hid the food, and brought them the water.

They started playing with the kids and praised how pretty my children are, and that, I should be thankful to God for them. They turned conversation into preaching and before they left, I had a total change of mind and an attitude of gratitude to God.

These two longrich guys saved three lives on the 13th of March, 2019.

Now, all I want to do is to get a job and leave this hell of a town I came to because of marriage. I am Annita, and I have a Degree in Business Administration. (Marketing)”.
