  • Late Netherlands blitz sinks Northern Ireland

Luuk de Jong and Memphis Depay inspired the Netherlands’ thrilling fightback as they scored three times in the last 10 minutes to seal a dramatic 3-1 win over Northern Ireland in Thursday’s Euro 2020 qualifier.

Ronald Koeman’s side were in danger of a shock defeat when Josh Magennis put the visitors ahead at De Kuip.

But the Feyenoord Stadium has been a fortress for the Netherlands and they have now won their last 17 games at the venue.

Memphis Depay sparked the dramatic finale with his 80th minute equaliser and De Jong bagged the crucial second in stoppage-time.

There was still time for Depay to strike again to complete the remarkable comeback.

The Netherlands sit top of Group C in the race to qualify for next year’s European Championships.

They are ahead of second placed Germany and third placed Northern Ireland, with all three teams having 12 points.

Significantly, the Netherlands and Germany have played one game less than Northern Ireland.

Koeman’s men will visit Windsor Park to face Northern Ireland again in November.

Read:Memphis Depay spotted chilling in Ghana with Bisa Kdei

Koeman had warned his players to be wary of Northern Ireland’s “fighting machines”.

And Michael O’Neill’s side did everything in their power to claim a famous upset before running out of steam in the final minutes.

Kyle Lafferty, who is yet to score for Norwegian club Sarpsborg since joining in August, led the attack for Northern Ireland.

Lafferty was tasked with breaking down a Dutch defence anchored by Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk and he caused them some uncomfortable moments with his relentless pressing.

The Dutch were struggling to find any rhythm and when Ryan Babel teed up Georginio Wijnaldum, his shot was well blocked by Stuart Dallas, with Daley Blind blazing wide from the follow-up.

Northern Ireland kept up their defiant rearguard action as Steven Bergwijn’s shot was blocked by Jonny Evans.

By the time Wijnaldum shanked well over from Depay’s pass soon after the interval, it was clear Koeman’s team were growing frustrated.

Koeman sent on Donyell Malen and Donny van de Beek midway through the half in a bid to prise open the Irish defence.

Wijnaldum had an acrobatic strike hacked off the line by Leicester defender Evans.

However, it was Northern Ireland who snatched the shock lead against the run of play in the 75th minute.

When the Dutch made a hash of clearing, Dallas worked space on the touchline to loft a cross towards Magennis.

With Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt caught under the ball, Hull striker Magennis rose highest to head home from close-range.

But Depay came to the Netherlands’ rescue 10 minutes from full-time when the Lyon forward calmly slotted home from Malen’s pass.

Suddenly, the hosts were rampant and their pressure was rewarded in stoppage-time as De Jong poked home from virtually on the goal-line.

It was a heart-breaking moment for Northern Ireland and Depay finished them off when he rolled in his second goal off the post.

  • Suspect on the run after shooting rampage near German synagogue kills two people

Two people have been killed in a shooting rampage near a synagogue in the eastern German town of Halle, according to local police.

One woman was killed close to the town’s synagogue around midday local time on Wednesday, before a gunman opened fire at a kebab shop roughly 600 meters away, fatally wounding a man. A 35-minute video has been posted online that appears to have been filmed by the gunman.

A police search for the perpetrators is now underway. At least one person is on the run and local residents were urged to seek safety, as the attack may have involved as many as three suspects, according to the Federal Criminal Office.

One suspect has been arrested. A spokesman for the German federal prosecutor identified the suspect as “Stephan B.” and said he is 27 years old.

By Wednesday afternoon, a police operation was underway in the small village of Wiedersdorf, around 14 kilometers (8.6 miles) east of Halle, according to CNN’s German affiliate, n-tv.

Several people were also injured in what local authorities described as a “rampage.” The incident near the synagogue comes on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

A German security official told CNN that “investigators believe the shootings in Halle were motivated by far-right ideology” based on what they have learned so far.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her “deep condolences to the family of the victims,” government spokesperson Stephen Siebert tweeted.
“Our solidarity to all Jews on the holy day of Yom Kippur. Our thanks to the security forces who are still on the case,” Siebert said.

The attack had hit Germans “in the heart,” Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, said on Twitter. He added: “We all have to fight against anti-Semitism in our country.”

    Video appears to show attack
The video appears to have been filmed with a camera mounted on the helmet of the attacker.

The video, which was filmed from the shooter’s perspective, bears striking resemblance to the video filmed by the suspect in the Christchurch attack in New Zealand in March.

The suspected gunman in the German attack launched into a brief anti-Semitic rant in the video, claiming the Holocaust “never happened” and saying that the root of some of the world’s problems are the Jews.

The 35-minute video shows the suspected gunman shooting multiple individuals and driving in a car to multiple locations, including a synagogue and a kebab shop.

The video was posted on Twitch, an online video streaming platform that is most commonly used to live stream video games.

A spokesperson for Twitch confirmed to CNN that the apparent video of the attack was livestreamed on its platform.

“We are shocked and saddened by the tragedy that took place in Germany today, and our deepest condolences go out to all those affected,” Twitch said in a statement.

“Twitch has a zero-tolerance policy against hateful conduct, and any act of violence is taken extremely seriously. We are working with urgency to remove this content and permanently suspend any accounts found to be posting or reposting content of this abhorrent act.”

Halle police referred CNN to the federal prosecutor’s office.
Annette Hechler, a spokeswoman for the federal prosecutor, said they are investigating the video.

She declined to comment on the identity of the suspect who is in police custody or on the weapon that was used in the attack.

  • Six months on, Notre-Dame’s rebirth still years away

One day after the blaze that scarred Notre-Dame, President Emmanuel Macron addressed a nation in shock at the damage to one of its great cultural landmarks, with a promise that rang as clearly as the peal of the cathedral’s bells.

“We will rebuild the cathedral even more beautifully and I want it to be finished within five years,” Macron said on national television on the evening of April 16, 2019.

“And we can do it,” he added.

But six months after the April 15 fire that tore through the roof of the 13th-century Paris cathedral and toppled its spire, the reconstruction process is shaping up to be much more complex than many anticipated.

Workers have had to clean up significant quantities of lead that melted from the roof and contaminated areas around the cathedral, with critics saying the authorities were slow to warn the public of the risks.

There remains no consensus on how the cathedral should look after reconstruction, with many experts wanting the spire to be rebuilt exactly like the original, and Macron arguing for an innovative solution.

Above all, the process of securing an edifice still at risk of collapse after the fire damage has taken precedence over any reconstruction.

Read:French lawmakers approve controversial bill to rebuild Notre-Dame

It is only at the end of 2020 that a complete check will allow architects to work out how to restore the cathedral. No reconstruction is expected to start before 2021.

    – ‘Not scaremongering’ –

It is impossible at this stage to say “how much this is going to cost, how long this is going to last,” said Michel Aupetit, the archbishop of Paris.

Macron’s five-year goal would see the cathedral’s reconstruction completed in the spring of 2024, before Paris hosts the Olympic Games that year.

The top priority is to eliminate any risk to the vaulted ceiling, with the main danger coming from 500 tonnes of scaffolding that was erected around the fire for renovation work before the blaze.

The damage caused by just a single bar of scaffolding falling could prove irreparable, and the work to remove the structure will take several months.

“This is not scare-mongering. It is a physical reality,” said Christophe-Charles Rousselot, director general of the Fondation Notre-Dame, the charity that is overseeing the gathering of donations to the cathedral.

With regards to the spire, a late addition to the mediaeval cathedral designed by the 19th-century French architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc, many see it as an integral part of the building.

“It needs to be rebuilt as it was before,” said Philippe Villeneuve, the architect in charge of restoring the cathedral, arguing that the sheer power of the spire integrated it with the mediaeval church.

His is backed by Viollet-le-Duc’s descendants and, according to opinion polls, the French public.

But the government has left open the possibility of an international competition for architects to design something new.

Read:Notre-Dame: How an underwater forest in Ghana could help rebuild a Paris icon

    – ‘I feel orphaned’ –

Experts are also intensively researching the precise original architecture of the cathedral, so that when reconstruction begins it is as accurate as possible.

“Before 2010, we only have old-style surveys, plans that have been redrawn on numerous occasions which are very partial and very imprecise,” said Remi Fromont, one of the architects responsible for the site who is working on drawing up accurate plans.

Andrew Tallon, a Belgium-born scholar who died aged 49 in November 2018, carried out hugely valuable laser scans of the interior in 2010 that have proved an even more valuable legacy than he could have imagined.

“We know that we will have shortcomings. Not all the chapels were systematically scanned. There are still areas of doubt,” Fromont said.

In the aftermath of the fire, private individuals and above all rich French cooperations rushed to pledge hundreds of millions for the rebuilding of the cathedral.

There were concerns whether this funding would ever be realised.

But France’s richest man Bernard Arnault in September signed a formal accord over his pledge of 200 million euros ($220 million), as did the Pinault family for their promised 100 million euros.

A signing on another 100 million promised by the oil giant Total is awaited in October.

The consortium of fundraising groups behind the drive believes that 800 million euros ($890,000) can be raised in total, with over 616 million euros now either transferred or pledged.

But lovers of the historic masterpiece, be they tourists, architecture buffs or worshippers, may have to wait some time before Notre-Dame becomes theirs again.

“I have felt myself orphaned, it is like being in mourning,” said Michele Chevalier, 70, a regular at Notre-Dame who was at the service when the first evacuation took place.

“I still manage to pray, but it’s not the same.”

  • Married priests question raises fears of Church split

An idea to fill empty pulpits in remote locations by allowing married men to become priests is bitterly dividing a Vatican assembly, with critics warning the emotive issue could fracture the Catholic Church.

The hot-button topic of whether an exception can be made to the centuries-old custom of celibacy in places where there is a shortage of priests has dominated the start of the three-week “synod” on the Pan-Amazonian region.

Austro-Brazilian bishop Erwin Krautler said Wednesday he estimated some two-thirds of the bishops in the region support the idea of “viri probati” (married “men of proven virtue”) as candidates for priesthood.

“There is no other option, indigenous peoples are clearly asking for it,” the former bishop of Xingu in Brazil told journalists.

Pope Francis has suggested those at the assembly to consider the possibility of ordaining married men for remote locations, such as the Amazon or the Pacific Islands, where communities seldom have Mass due to a lack of priests.

Read:Catholic priest murdered in Anglophone region

Only priests can consecrate the Eucharist, which is a key part of Catholic Mass.

Krautler and other supporters of the idea say the Eucharist is more important than celibacy, which is not a Church law and only dates back to the 11th century.

“Just as the magnificent jaguar faces exile from its habitat, the ecclesiastical ecosystem no longer manages to arouse and support enough priestly and religious vocations,” a person who attended the synod debates cited an unnamed Spanish-language bishop as saying.

“We are witnessing a sort of deforestation of Catholic culture,” he added.

    – ‘Crusade’ –

The synod’s chair, Brazilian Cardinal Claudio Hummes, said Monday the Church needed to “define new paths for the future” in response to the calls not only for married priests but also for suitable ministries for women in the region.

Read:Former New Mexico priest gets 30 years for child sexual abuse

The Roman Catholic institution is concerned about the sharp increase in the Amazon region of evangelical Pentecostal churches, which do allow married men to serve as pastors.

But the issue deeply upsets some traditionalists, who argue that making an exception for the Amazon would open the door to the end of celibacy for priests in general.

They say priests are supposed to be married to God.

One of the pope’s fiercest critics, US Cardinal Raymond Burke, called last month for a 40-day “crusade of prayer and fasting” over “serious theological errors and heresies” contained in the working document for the synod.

He made a public appeal to Francis not to allow any exceptions to priestly celibacy.

The bishops at the synod will draw up suggestions for the Argentine pope, who is expected to then write his own document.

The hard-conservative wing of the Church frequently takes aim at Francis’s papacy, saying he is not outspoken enough on abortion, too compassionate towards homosexuals and divorcees, and too accommodating towards Muslims.

But Francis has brushed off fears of a rupture within the centuries-old institution, saying in September he was “not afraid” of a schism.

  • Democrat Biden calls for Trump’s impeachment

Democratic White House hopeful Joe Biden called Wednesday for President Donald Trump’s impeachment, saying he’d “betrayed” the United States, but Trump dug in, predicting that the Supreme Court would have to resolve the fight.

“To preserve our constitution, our democracy, our basic integrity, he should be impeached,” Biden told supporters at a rally in New Hampshire, adding his voice to that of other Democratic contenders.

“He’s shooting holes in the constitution, and we cannot let him get away with it,” added Biden.

Read: Trump impeachment: Second whistleblower emerges

Trump, however, showed no sign of buckling under pressure from the Democratic party probe into his alleged bid to damage Biden by strong-arming Ukraine to investigate the former vice president.

Having threatened a constitutional crisis by refusing to cooperate with the congressional investigation, Trump predicted that the row would end up “being a big Supreme Court case.”

He told reporters in the White House that his Republican party was being “treated very badly.”

Democrats accuse Trump of stonewalling and obstruction.

“No one is above the law, not even President Trump,” the Democratic majority leader in the House, Steny Hoyer, said Wednesday.

    – Impeachment becomes campaign message –

On Twitter, which Trump is using to bombard the public with conspiracy theories about a “deep state” aiming to eject him, the president argued that the whistleblower behind the impeachment case had been shown to be partisan and inaccurate.

“The Whistleblower’s facts have been so incorrect about my ‘no pressure’ conversation with the Ukrainian President, and now the conflict of interest and involvement with a Democrat Candidate, that he or she should be exposed and questioned,” Trump tweeted.

In another tweet, Trump dismissed the impeachment process as a Democratic bid to influence the election, saying “their total focus is 2020, nothing more.”

But Trump, who broke with precedent by campaigning for reelection almost from the moment he took office in 2017, is himself pouncing on the impeachment as the new cornerstone of his 2020 effort.

He and the Republican Party have pushed hard to raise funds off the back of their accusation of unfair treatment from the Democratic lower house in Congress.

And on Thursday and Friday, Trump will take that message to his core supporters when he holds campaign rallies in Minneapolis and in Louisiana.

Even if the House impeaches Trump, it remains unlikely that the Republican-led Senate would convict him in the subsequent trial.

However, Trump’s already turbulent presidency would be forever associated with the impeachment.

    – Ukrainian phone call –

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi formally launched the impeachment inquiry last month after revelations Trump pressured Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky in a July 25 phone call.

In the call, Trump asked Zelensky to look into what the US leader said were corrupt business deals involving Biden.

Democrats say that Trump tried to coerce Zelensky by holding back US military aid to Ukraine. Trump says there was no quid pro quo and that his only desire is to combat corruption.

He subsequently said publicly he would also like China to investigate Biden, something critics say bolsters the allegation that Trump is seeking foreign help to discredit opponents.

Read: Trump amps up complaints, says Pelosi may be guilty of treason

On Tuesday, the Trump administration blocked a potentially major witness, ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland, from testifying before Congress. Democrats then slapped Sondland with a subpoena to appear on October 16.

“The failure to produce this witness, the failure to produce these documents” was “additional strong evidence of obstruction,” House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff said.

Later the same day, the White House announced in a lengthy legal statement that it rejected any cooperation with the Democrats at all.

Lawmakers want to hear on Friday from another key witness: former US ambassador to Kiev Marie Yovanovitch, who is scheduled to appear before the House Intelligence Committee.

US media has reported that Trump removed her from her post because she opposed his efforts to get Ukraine to investigate Biden.

  • Parliament to pass TCDA Bill by December – Minister

The Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA) Bill will be passed by Parliament to receive Presidential Assent by the end of this year, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, has said.

The Bill, when passed into law, is expected to provide great relief to farmers of tree crops such as cashew, coffee and rubber because, like cocoa, they would also be paying fixed, guaranteed prices for their produce.

Read: Parliament to discuss visa waiver between Ghana, Jamaica

Dr Akoto said this at the Brong-Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs (BARHCs) when he responded to a question concerning the loss incurred by cashew farmers in the Bono Region.

The Region is the highest producer of raw cashew in the country but in recent years the farmers have been complaining of the unacceptable prices for a kilo or a bag of the crop offered by local and foreign buyers.

The situation is attributed to the unregulated, unguaranteed and unstable price of the commodity because of the non-existence of an entity like the Ghana Cocoa Board that buys cocoa at a fixed price, serving as a guarantee to farmers.

Dr Akoto said government had grouped the economic tree crops under one entity; the TCDA, for the stabilisation and regulation of the process to provide farmers guaranteed prices like cocoa.

Based on that, he said government was focusing on the development and production of six cash crops – coconut, rubber, oil palm, coffee, mango, shea butter and cashew, and that seedlings were being raised for supply to farmers to commence planting nationwide.

He said cocoa had been fetching the country two billion dollars annually and each of the aforementioned crops could also fetch the nation same amount yearly.

Nana Bofo Bene IV, the Paramount Chief of Dwenem-Awasu Traditional Area in the Jaman South Municipality and the Vice President of the BARHCs, appealed to the Government to ensure the establishment of a buying agency or development authority for cashew as matter of urgency.

“If a bag of cashew was being bought at a point in time for GhC820.00, why should the price fall to as low as GhC220.00 now?” he asked, and called on the authorities to act fast to prevent the farmers from working in vain.

  • BoG supervisory agents complicit in collapse of banks must face the law Sam Okudzeto

Legal practitioner and current member of the Council of State, Sam Okudzeto says just as civil and legal proceedings have commenced against management members who played a role in the collapse of some banks across the country, he expects officials of the Bank of Ghana who are complicit in the banking sector crisis to take their turn in the face of the law.

Mr Okudzeto who was speaking on JoyNews’ Upfront program Wednesday night said, had the Bank of Ghana officials at the supervisory department done their job effectively, they would have noticed and contained the crisis before it got out of hand.

“Those in the banking supervision department, many of them should be held responsible for some of the things that had happened. Because if they were doing their homework and checking the banks properly, they would have seen what was going on. And they would have reported to the governor or the board to take decision.”

He added that the governor should also be held responsible should it be revealed he played a role in the crisis.

The former Board Member of the Bank of Ghana who touted his tenure on the board said, the Paul Acquah-led leadership under which he served was the best banking period in the history of the country, adding that the genesis of the banking crisis can never be traced to their period.

Asked what his general expectations are for the years ahead, Mr Okudzeto said he expects the ongoing clean-up process including the legal actions being undertaken to result in the retrieval of all monies lost to the crisis.

“We should be able to retrieve every state money that has gone out, we should be able to recover them. Because these monies must have been invested in institutions or there is something we call tracing order. There is a tracing order whereby we can find out where the money went. And if the money went to family, friends, relatives and the rest of them; the companies that have been formed, the assets that have been acquired. All of them can be seized by order of the court to compensate the state.”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was alleged to have used tax havens in Belize and Uruguay to conceal earnings from image rights, and as such defrauded Spain of €4.1 million between 2007 and 2009.

Messi was eventually found guilty and sentenced to 21 months in prison and a €2m fine before his prison time was amended to a €252,000 (£223,000/$288,000) fine in July 2017.

Messi caught up in FIFA The Best vote-rigging storm with countries claiming they did not vote for him

His father, Jorge, was similarly sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment and a fine of €1.5m, though his prison sentence was reduced on appeal.

And Messi has now admitted that, when the charges were originally made, he wanted to leave Spain and spoke to a number of clubs regarding a move away from Camp Nou, though he did not receive any concrete offers.

“I had it in my mind to leave at that time, not to leave Barcelona but to leave Spain,” he told RAC1. “I felt that I was being mistreated and did not want to be here anymore.

“I had the door opened by many clubs but I never had an official offer because everyone knew of my previous desire to continue in Barcelona. The feeling I had went beyond what I felt for this club.

“There was a time when I ended up tired by a lot of circumstances, it has happened several times, especially in 2013 and 2014, with the problems with the treasury and everything that came out. It was difficult for me and my family, many people did not know what I was going through and I heard a sector of the press helped to make this happen.”

Speculation regarding Messi’s future continues, with the recent revelation that he has a clause in his current contract that would allow him to leave the Spanish champions for free at the end of the season should he so wish.

Revealed: Messi holds right to terminate Barcelona contract

The 32-year-old, though, insists that he wants to see out the remainder of his career with the Blaugrana, for whom he has worn the captain’s armband for the past two seasons.

“Obviously I will stay if you love me. I am delighted and my idea is to stay here – nothing has changed that at all. It is increasingly clear that I will end my career here. It is my idea and that of my family, first for how I am and what I feel for the club and the city.

“I would not like to change the friendships of the children or their social circle, I would not like this to break. I had to live with it and I do not want it to happen to them.”

Hat-trick hero Shafiu Mumuni fired Ghana into the final of the 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations after beating Ivory Coast 3-1 in the semifinal at the Stade Lat Dior in Thies, Senegal on Tuesday.

The Black Stars had the first chance on goal in the 10th minute, but Joseph Esso saw his 20-yard free kick brilliantly saved by keeper Eliezer Ira Tape.

Ivory Coast nearly took the lead in the 21st minute after a great turn on the edge of the box by David Fofana, but his pile-driver shaved the wrong side of the post.

It was a blistering start to the second half from Ghana who scored their second goal a minute in after the restart when Mumuni headed home a sweeping right-wing cross from Okrah to double the lead.

In the 50th minute it was 3-0 to the Black Stars after a third goal from Mumuni, the Ghanaian captain completing his hat trick with another clinical 10-yard header after latching onto a left-wing cross this time.

  • FBI seeks help identifying America’s most prolific serial killer

Samuel Little, 79, confessed to strangling 93 victims between 1970 and 2005 last year — triple the number of victims that Ted Bundy confessed to killing.

Now, the FBI is asking the public to help identify more victims of the man they say is America’s most prolific serial killer.

Little targeted women, often of marginalized and vulnerable groups, many who were involved in prostitution or suffering from drug addiction. Their bodies sometimes went unidentified and their deaths uninvestigated.

The FBI is hoping to change that.
“For many years, Samuel Little believed he would not be caught because he thought no one was accounting for his victims,” said ViCAP Crime Analyst Christie Palazzolo in a statement. “Even though he is already in prison, the FBI believes it is important to seek justice for each victim—to close every case possible.”

That’s where the public comes in. FBI crime analysts believe all of Little’s 93 confessions are credible, but so far they’ve only been able to verify 50 of them.

They’ve released information about five cases on the agency’s website, “in hopes that someone may remember a detail that could further the investigation.”

Each case presented is accompanied by a video of Little explaining the incident and a hand-drawn photo by Little of the woman.

The FBI has used this strategy before, releasing 16 victim portraits Little drew in February.

Little is currently serving three life sentences in California. Before FBI agents knew about his connection to these dozens of murders, Little was already imprisoned for beating and strangling three women.

Then, in 2018, agents noticed his name popping up in connection to other unsolved murders across the country — especially to one in Odessa, Texas. Texas Ranger James Holland and two FBI crime analysts traveled to California to interview Little over the course of May 2018.

Eventually, Little confessed to killing about 90 people.

CNN emailed the FBI for comment, as well as information on whether his charges are being updated, but we have not received a reply.

  • Notre-Dame: How an underwater forest in Ghana could help rebuild a Paris icon

Wood from a vast underwater forest in Ghana could be used to rebuild Notre-Dame Cathedral after its spire and roof were consumed by a blaze in April.

Massive tropical trees have been submerged beneath Lake Volta since 1965 when the construction of Ghana’s Akosombo Dam flooded part of the Volta River Basin.

A Ghanaian company, which has government concessions to harvest this wood, believes that using it to rebuild Notre-Dame is more environmentally friendly than cutting down new trees.

Kete Krachi Timber Recovery argues that the wood is “much stronger” because it has been preserved from decay by the lake’s bog-like conditions, and has started to fossilise.

Read: We never promised Akosombo-like dams Minister reacts to 1V1D

While some experts have described the proposal as a “genius solution”, others warn that it could have disastrous consequences for the ecosystem.

The company has submitted its proposal to the French government, arguing that using wood from Lake Volta would help restore Notre-Dame to its original state.

An estimated 1,300 trees, mainly oaks, were felled in the 12th Century to build Notre-Dame’s iconic frame and spire. The deforested area spanned 52 acres – the equivalent of 26 football pitches.

According to Bertrand de Feydeau, vice-president of French preservation group Fondation du Patrimoine, France no longer has giant oak trees of the same size and maturity that were used to build the original structure.

Francis Kalitsi, chairman and co-founder of Kete Krachi, agrees. “We don’t think they still have oak in these volumes for the construction of cathedrals,” he said.

“Whereas underneath the lake, you have typical African hardwoods that are similar to oak trees – their density may range from 650kg to 900kg per cubic metre. They are structural timbers which could be useful in the reconstruction.”

Kete Krachi already harvests the underwater timber using remotely operated machinery guided by video, sonar and GPS navigation. Most of the wood is exported to Europe, and some to South Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

The company says if commissioned, it would sell $50m (£39.5m) worth of wood to the French government. Its proposal has already been acknowledged by the ministry of culture.

Jérémie Patrier-Leitus from the French culture ministry told the BBC: “Right now we don’t know if the frame will be rebuilt in wood. We are in the process of securing the monument, and then we will have to rebuild the vault and the spire.

“Reconstruction will start once the structure of the monument is stabilised and preserved. We will study the different generous offers once we have confirmed the material used to rebuild the frame.”

Bog oak: A more durable wood

Dr Cathy Oakes, specialist in French and English medieval architecture and iconography at the University of Oxford, said the wood in Lake Volta could be similar to “bog oak”, which was widely used in medieval constructions and furniture, although not in the original Notre-Dame.

“Bog oak has similarly been exposed to water for a long period of time, so it’s stronger and more durable,” she said in remarks before her death this summer.

The shortage of oxygen and the acidic conditions of peat bogs and riverbeds help to preserve tree trunks from decay. The wood then begins to fossilise, making it significantly stronger.

Andrew Waugh, director of London-based sustainable architecture practice Waugh Thistleton Architects, said using African wood such as iroko from Lake Volta could be a “genius solution”.

“It would seem to be a great way of solving a problem and helping a poorer economy,” he said.

“Iroko is an incredibly durable, hard-wearing timber. It’s very stable. Unless there are any issues with decay from taking it out of the water, one would imagine it would be a great timber to work with.”

    But what about the environment?

However, concerns have been raised about the possible negative impact harvesting wood from Lake Volta could have on the local ecosystem.

A report in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives said pulling trees from lake beds can pollute the water with sediment, thereby blocking the light needed by aquatic organisms to survive.

The trees also provide a habitat for fish and other wildlife. Uprooting them could disrupt the lake’s ecology, thereby threatening Ghana’s fishery industry – a lifeline for an estimated 300,000 fishing families.

Stephen Anani, a project officer at local NGO Friends of the Nation, told the BBC that removing underwater trees had led to a “sharp decline” in the number of fish in Lake Volta because they tend to breed around stumps.

“It’s destroying the habitat where fish lay their eggs,” he said. “Some of the fish are now endangered. If you speak to fishermen along the lake, they complain bitterly.”

Questions have also been raised about the carbon footprint associated with extracting the wood and transporting it from Ghana to France.

According to the International Maritime Organization’s third Greenhouse Gas study, maritime transport emits around 940 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year and accounts for about 2.5% of global greenhouse gases.

Dr John Recha, a Nairobi-based climate scientist at the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, says harvesting the wood and transporting it to France could leave a “significant” carbon footprint.

“A ship typically uses a lot of fuel,” he told the BBC. “The machinery used on seas, oceans and lakes are also typically more complex and require more fossil fuels, which emit carbon into the atmosphere.”

Kete Krachi maintains, however, that emission levels related to salvaging timber from the lake are “much lower” compared to emissions from cutting trees on land.

“The bulk of fuel consumption in felling trees is in log transport – and water transport is more energy efficient than land transport,” Mr Kalitsi said.

Dr Tristan Smith, an energy and shipping expert at University College London’s Energy Institute, agrees that ocean shipping is normally considered the most efficient mode of transport in terms of greenhouse gas emissions.

However, he warned that pollution from shipping has not been as tightly regulated as other industries, so the plan to ship wood may not be as eco-friendly as might be assumed.

“Depending on the specifics of the route taken and the ships used, the greenhouse gas emissions from the sea voyage may be of a similar magnitude to that from the trucking used at either end of the voyage,” Dr Smith said.

Kete Krachi says the ships it plans to use would be travelling to France anyway on established trade routes, so it would contribute a “negligible” quantity of additional carbon into the atmosphere.

Read: Heavy downpour cuts off 3 communities from Akosombo

The company ultimately believes its potential involvement in rebuilding Notre-Dame would not only benefit Ghana’s economy, but have a wider symbolic importance.

“It would mean we could play a role in an architectural feat that is a gift not only to France, but to the world,” Mr Kalitsi says.

    Dr Oakes agrees.

“In the end, it’s got to come down to practicalities of experience. But to think that the world is being invited to contribute towards the reconstruction of this building is great.”

  • Iranian Instagram star ‘arrested for blasphemy’

An Iranian Instagram star famed for posts which appeared to show she had gone to extreme lengths to look like US actress Angelina Jolie has been arrested, reports say.

Sahar Tabar was arrested for crimes including blasphemy and instigating violence, Tasnim news agency reported.

Tabar made international headlines last year when photos of her went viral.

Though she was rumoured to have had 50 plastic surgeries, most of the pictures in her posts had been heavily edited.

    Who is Sahar Tabar?
The 22-year-old known as Sahar Tabar has attracted global media attention for pictures and videos in which she resembles what has been described as a zombie version of Angelina Jolie, reports BBC Middle East analyst Sebastian Usher.

With sunken cheeks, a massively plumped up smile and a cartoonishly turned-up nose, she has caused concern over the dozens of cosmetic surgeries she said she had undertaken to resemble the American star.

But after fascinating and horrifying her growing audience on Instagram, she also hinted that much of her ghost-like appearance was down to make-up and digital editing – in effect she had turned herself into a kind of artistic installation.

What do we know about her arrest?
Judicial authorities arrested Tabar after members of the public reportedly made complaints about her, Tasnim reported.

She is accused of blasphemy, instigating violence, illegally acquiring property, insulting the country’s dress code and encouraging young people to commit corruption.

Her Instagram has since been deleted.

She joins a long list of online Iranian influencers and fashion bloggers who have fallen foul of the law.

The report of her detention has sparked online denunciation of the authorities, with one tweet sarcastically suggesting she should have indulged in less incendiary pursuits, such as embezzlement and murder.

  • Fake news sparks panic among Indonesia quake victims

Thousands of Indonesians are still in shelters nearly two weeks after a deadly earthquake sparked a stream of fake news and hoaxes warning that an even bigger disaster was looming, the government said Monday.

The local government has declared a state of emergency until Wednesday, with nearly 135,000 people in evacuation shelters and tents.

Many displaced people are too scared to return to their homes in the remote Maluku islands after the area suffered more than 1,000 aftershocks following a 6.5-magnitude quake on September 26 that killed dozens and damaged scores of homes and other buildings, the agency said.

Terrified residents ran into the streets following the quake, which sparked landslides that buried at least one of the victims.

The strong jolt killed 37 people, including several young children, and injured dozens of others.

More than 6,000 houses were damaged, according to official figures.

Fears about aftershocks have been aggravated by a stream of hoaxes and fake news — mostly on WhatsApp and other messaging services — that warned a tsunami-generating quake was about to strike.

“It’s up to you if you want to believe me or not, but I talked with my relative and apparently Ambon is going to sink in the next few days,” said one message circulated on WhatsApp.

National disaster mitigation agency spokesman Agus Wibowo said the fake news was making a bad situation worse.

“There are so many hoaxes about a bigger earthquake and tsunami,” he told AFP.

“People are scared and so they chose to stay in shelters,” Wibowo added.

Even some whose houses weren’t damaged in the quake have refused to go home despite efforts to convince them it was safe, Wibowo said.

“Many people also thought they’re not allowed to go back during the state of emergency, which is actually false,” he added.

The Southeast Asian nation is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth.

It experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide.

Last year, a 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island left more than 4,300 people dead or missing.

In 2004, a devastating 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra and triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 throughout the region, including around 170,000 in Indonesia.

  • Thomas Partey gives away penalty in Atletico Madrid stalemate with Valladolid

Atletico Madrid played out a 0-0 draw with Real Valladolid at Estadio Jose Zorrilla on Sunday, with Thomas Partey causing the most noteworthy moment.

The Ghanaian was in superb form heading into this clash, claiming the Man of the Match in the Madrid Derby last weekend, before finding the back of the net in Atleti’s 2-0 Champions League victory at Lokomotiv Moscow in midweek.

He turned villain this time around, fouling Sandro Ramirez just past the half-hour mark, and after a lengthy check with VAR, referee Jose Maria Sanchez awarded Valladolid a penalty, but Ramirez blasted his effort over the crossbar.

Despite the setback, Partey still had a good game, making 52 passes, the fourth highest of any Atleti player. His passing accuracy of 86.5% was sixth-highest, while his 65 touches on the ball were fourth highest.

This result is Atletico’s third stalemate in their last four league games.

They have missed the chance to go second in the standings and could drop from third spot pending the results of Real Sociedad and Barcelona’s respective home ties against Getafe and Sevilla.
