  • Police crackdown on tinted vehicles

The police have started a crackdown on cars with tinted windows in the Greater Accra Region.

The action, the police say, is to check possible crime by drivers who may hide behind the tinted film to carry out their nefarious activities.

The operation, code named “Operation tinted windscreen”, was carried out by the Intelligence Unit of the Accra Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Central Motor Traffic and Transport Department on the Spintex Road and Accra New Town.

Within hours of the start of the operation last Wednesday, about 30 vehicles were impounded.

Read: 128 cars impounded for traffic offences in Kumasi

So far, 15 owners of those vehicles have suffered court fines between GH¢350 and GH¢480 each after they appeared before the La Motor Court in Accra and were compelled to remove the tints.

All the vehicles impounded were salon vehicles used for commercial purposes, including taxis and others that use other Internet applications for their operations.

    Law

The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Inspector Bright Kwabena Danso, told the Daily Graphic that driving a vehicle with tinted glasses was illegal and the police had recorded incidents of some people using such vehicles for the wrong reasons.

The deputy PRO said in recent times, with an upturn in celebrity culture and the youth wanting to mimic that lifestyle, car window tinting had been on the rise.

Tinting the glasses of windows, he said, had been seen as a symbol of status and lifestyle, while others saw it as a security measure or for privacy.

“Vehicle owners must know that there are strict laws around its application. To some people, tinted windscreens do have aesthetic value, and can serve as some level of safety, but they must remember the implications and the law,” he said.

Read: Ghana Post trains MTTD officials on use of App

He said a number of serious road accidents in recent years have cited tinted glass as a contributory factor.

Mr said most of the vehicles which were impounded had the front and rear windscreens and their windows all tinted.

“In relation to the recent cases of kidnapping and other forms of crime, it is important to identify the occupants in these vehicles,” he said.

    Aim

The exercise, he said, was ongoing to ensure the safety of users of vehicles and other road users.

“We actually realised that it was usually the drivers and not the owners of the vehicles who put tints on the vehicles. We are starting a mass sensitisation so that people can remove these tints without the intervention of the police,” he said.

  • World’s most powerful passports revealed

It’s been a two-horse race this year to be named the world’s most powerful passport, with both top contenders in Asia.

Now, as we enter the final quarter of 2019, Japan and Singapore have held onto their position as the world’s most travel-friendly passports.

That’s the view of the Henley Passport Index, which periodically measures the access each country’s travel document affords.

Singapore and Japan’s passports have topped the rankings thanks to both documents offering access to 190 countries each.

South Korea rubs shoulders with Finland and Germany in second place, with citizens of all three countries able to access 188 jurisdictions around the world without a prior visa.

Finland has benefited from recent changes to Pakistan’s formerly highly restrictive visa policy. Pakistan now offers an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) to citizens of 50 countries, including Finland, Japan, Spain, Malta, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates — but not, notably, the United States or the UK.

Read:Passport office to publish names of 67,000 uncollected passports

The European countries of Denmark, Italy and Luxembourg hold third place in the index, with visa-free/visa-on-arrival access to 187 countries, while France, Spain and Sweden are in the fourth slot, with a score of 186.

Five years ago, the United States and the UK topped the rankings in 2014 — but both countries have now slipped down to sixth place, the lowest position either has held since 2010.

While the Brexit process has yet to directly impact on the UK’s ranking, the Henley Passport Index press release observed in July, “with its exit from the EU now imminent, and coupled with ongoing confusion about the terms of its departure, the UK’s once-strong position looks increasingly uncertain.”

The United Arab Emirates continues its ascent up the rankings, up five places to rank 15th.

“It’s the strongest climber this quarter,” Lorraine Charles at Cambridge University’s Centre for Business Research says in the October release.

“While the UAE may not be able to compete with Saudi Arabia — the regional hegemon — in terms of military strength and economic power, the projection of its soft power is uncontested in the GCC.”

At the other end of the scale, Afghanistan is once again at the bottom of the rankings, with its citizens needing a prior visa for all but 25 destinations worldwide.

Read:No passports for Zimbabweans as crisis deepens

Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners and the creator of the passport index concept, says in the July release: “With a few notable exceptions, the latest rankings from the Henley Passport Index show that countries around the world increasingly view visa-openness as crucial to economic and social progress.”

The best passports to hold in 2019 are:
    1. Japan, Singapore (190 destinations)

    2. Finland, Germany, South Korea (188)

    3. Denmark, Italy, Luxembourg (187)

    4. France, Spain, Sweden (186)

    5. Austria, Netherlands, Portugal (185)

    6. Belgium, Canada, Greece, Ireland, Norway, United Kingdom, United States, Switzerland (184)

    7. Malta, Czech Republic (183)

    8. New Zealand (182)

    9. Australia, Lithuania, Slovakia (181)

    10. Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Slovenia (180)

    The worst passports to hold
Several countries around the world have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to fewer than 40 countries. These include:

    100. Lebanon, North Korea (39 destinations)

    101. Nepal (38)

    102. Libya, Palestinian Territory, Sudan (37)

    103. Yemen (33)

    104. Somalia, Pakistan (31)

    105. Syria (29)

    106. Iraq (27)

    107. Afghanistan (25)

    Other indexes

Henley & Partner’s list is one of several indexes created by financial firms to rank global passports according to the access they provide to their citizens.

The Henley Passport Index is based on data provided by the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) and covers 199 passports and 227 travel destinations. It is updated in real time throughout the year, as and when visa policy changes come into effect.

Arton Capital’s Passport Index takes into consideration the passports of 193 United Nations member countries and six territories — ROC Taiwan, Macau (SAR China), Hong Kong (SAR China), Kosovo, Palestinian Territory and the Vatican. Territories annexed to other countries are excluded.

Its 2019 index puts the UAE on top with a “visa-free score” of 177, followed by Germany, Finland, Luxembourg and Spain with 170.

  • We don’t apply chemicals to fruits and vegetables – Traders

Traders at the Tema Community One market have refuted a growing public perception that they apply chemicals to fruits and vegetables to get them mature early which inevitably lead to their short shelf life.

They rather blamed consumers for improper handling and storage of the items.

In a market survey, the traders told the Ghana News Agency that it was unfortunate that some residents of Tema would peddle such falsehood about their business.

Read: Kasoa market traders lament low patronage of goods

Consumers in Tema for some time now had been expressing worry at the rate at which vegetables and fruits they buy from the market rot within a short period even when preserved in the refrigerators.

Some complained that vegetables such as carrot, garden eggs and fruits including pineapple and orange which hitherto could last for several days, now went bad just three days after purchase.

The traders hinted that vegetables such as carrots, green pepper, lettuce and tomatoes do not do well in heat and water and must therefore be refrigerated or keep in the open.

They noted that tomatoes could best be preserved by taking them out of the polythene bag and placed in a basket or put on a tiled floor saying “when put on the tiled floor, it stays fresh for at least four days”.

Madam Rosina, a vegetable seller, noted that the best way to preserve okro was to tie it up in a plastic bag.

They described as normal when fruits such as banana, oranges, watermelon, pineapple, and pawpaw rot within three days as they have a short shelf life, adding however that when refrigerated, they could sta fresh about two weeks.

Read: Food prices in Kumasi generally stable

“Banana can be preserved in the fridge for about two weeks while pineapples and pawpaw can go for a week when refrigerated, ”they noted.

They however appealed to farmers to minimize the quantity of fertilizers they apply on the crops to give them a longer shelf life.

They attributed short shelf life to the application of harmful chemicals and fertilizers.

The meat sellers on their part told the GNA that one could add salt to meat for preservation adding that the other options were cooking and deep freezing.

Mr Miah commended government for its commitment in the industrialisation agenda and that once the process was due, the Company would continue its efforts in partnering all stakeholders to fully industrialise Ghana.

There were no petitions against the only female candidate Amanda Clinton and George Ankamah, when they were grilled by the Vetting Committee.

Even though the petitions do not automatically mean that a candidate has been disqualified the sticky and concrete information on the forged letterhead has convinced insiders that the culprit will be thrown out of the race.

The election committee has already analysed the petitions as the seven aspirants appeared before them.

With an impeccable integrity required to steer the affairs of the football association, all the aspirants must go through a rigorous integrity test before the five-member panel.

Kurt Okraku was the first to face the five-man team and was followed by Amanda Clinton, George Ankamah Mensah, and Nana Yaw Amponsah.

On Saturday, trio Fred Pappoe, Wilfred Osei Kweku and George Afriyie faced the committee.

The Vetting Committee is chaired by Frank Davies Esq. and the other members are Mrs Marian Barnor and lawyer Mr Emmanuel Darkwah.

  • GES applauded for tactical retreat over Comprehensive Sexuality Education

Vice-President of IMANI Ghana, Kofi Bentil, has applauded the Ghana Education Service (GES) for beating “a tactical retreat” over plans to introduce Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) after it sparked public outrage.

After widespread criticisms over the plan, the GES has said it has not approved any such document.

One of the goals of the guidelines is to teach schoolchildren to “nurture positive attitudes such as “open-mindedness”, the “concept of gender” “courtship”, “unintended pregnancy”, “abortion” and “respecting gender differences”.

Read: Ghanaians divided over new sexuality education

Mr Bentil, speaking on the Joy FM Super Morning Show, Tuesday, called the document on CSE “a Trojan horse”, explaining it is a subtle conditioning of pupils to explore lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) lifestyles.

He said CSE has been “dressed as sex education” but it is not, explaining it is rather a persuasive teaching of children about controversial matters such as “gender choices” linked to transgender.

Even liberal countries that accept LGBT, he said, have a problem with introducing schoolchildren to CSE.

The GES has said it wants to insert into the guidelines a phrase that says pupils will be taught the subject “within the acceptable cultural values and norms of Ghanaian society.”

Mr Bentil rejected this explanation insisting Ghanaians are “not naïve.” He explained that CSE is a global brand, which Ghana cannot deviate from in its implementation.

“You cannot look at a Trojan horse and call it a toy,” he said.

President of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council has warned against introducing CSE in public schools and has threatened a demonstration.

Its president, Rev. Prof. Paul Frimpong-Manso has described CSE as a Comprehensive Satanic Engagement.

  • Drop satanic sex education programme – Chief Imam

The National Chief Imam Sheikh Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu has described the controversial Comprehensive Sexuality Education curriculum.

According to him, Islamic teachings do not tolerate the exposure of children below age 10 to sex education.

“We would like to state unequivocally that the Islamic Community does not accept any form of educating minors and pupils on sexuality. In our estimation, such a move is an attempt to hide behind educational reforms to brainwash the pupils with LGBT agenda. Ideally, Islamic jurisprudence recommends that sexual education be introduced to children above the age of 10. This is the time the children are expected to begin to understand the socio-moral consequences of the choice of sex orientation.”

“We, therefore, urge the sector Ministry and GES to consider a broad consultation with relevant stakeholders on the implementation of the controversial policy.”

“We appeal to the Ministry and GES to drop that satanic agenda in the interest of national cohesion and moral promotion,” the Chief Imam said in a statement.”

The statement also urged the Ghana Education Service to embark on broad consultation on the matter before any attempt at implementation.

It comes after the massive public uproar against the sex education initiation with some Ghanaians calling on the education ministry to withdraw it.

For instance, the Concerned Teachers Association of Ghana says teachers in the country are not aware of the controversial curriculum which is starting next academic year.

According to them, claims by the Ghana Education Service that teachers have been briefed about the curriculum are untrue.

    Below are details of the statement;

    THE CSE AT PRE-SCHOOL LEVEL

The Office of the National Chief Imam (ONCI) wishes to add its voice to the ongoing debate on the agenda of Ghana Education Service (GES) to introduce what it calls Comprehensive Sexual Education (CSE) at the KG, targeting 5-year old pupils.

The ONCI is joined in this endeavor by the Tijjaniya Muslims of Ghana, the Islamic Peace and Security Council of Ghana (IPASEC), the Islamic Council for Development and Humanitarian Services (ICODEHS), the Islamic Research Association of Ghana and the Association of the 16 Regional Chiefs Imams.

We would like to state unequivocally that the Islamic Community does not accept any form of educating minors and pupils on sexuality. In our estimation, such a move is an attempt to hide behind educational reforms to brainwash the pupils with LGBT agenda. Ideally, Islamic jurisprudence recommends that sexual education be introduced to children above the age of 10. This is the time the children are expected to begin to understand the socio-moral consequences of the choice of sex orientation.

We, therefore, urge the sector Ministry and GES to consider a broad consultation with relevant stakeholders on the implementation of the controversial policy.

We appeal to the Ministry and GES to drop that satanic agenda in the interest of national cohesion and moral promotion.

The ONCI and its partners mentioned above take this opportunity to reiterate their commitment to discipline and morality among the youth and in the learning industry.

We thank the media for helping us carry this and other messages across.

    Sincerely yours,

    Alhaji Khuzaima Osman

  • New curriculum has nothing to do with masturbation – GES responds to criticisms

The Ghana Education Service has responded to the ongoing debate over the new Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) into the basic school curriculum.

The GES in a statement says they are surprised at the “wild speculations and claims” on the matter.

Some of the speculation centred around fears on sensitization on sexuality and LGBTQ ideas.

Read: Ghanaians divided over new sexuality education

The new curriculum indicates that pupils from pre-school to the final year of Senior High School will be taught various modules of the course which is geared towards entrenching healthy sexual attitudes.

But the GES maintains that the new curriculum being implemented “has nothing to do with LGBT issues, masturbation or explicit display/labelling of intimate body parts.”

Portions of their statement read: “The new standard-based curriculum being implemented has nothing to do with LGBT issues, masturbation of explicit display/labelling of intimate body parts”

“The GES is a state agency and will not under any circumstances implement any programme which goes contrary to the legal, cultural norms, values and believes of the Ghanaian people.”

The Ghana government and United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) launched the CSE programme which the GES said: “does not seek to throw out the advocacy for sexual abstinence but rather seeks to reinforce it.”

The GES explained that the member states of the United Nations are mandated to roll out CSE in accordance “with their cultural norms and values.”

Read: Sexuality education will not undermine our cultural norms GES

“It is, therefore, wrong to insist that CSE as practised in Europe or North America has the same structures and content as is being rolled out in Ghana.”

The GES maintains that the curriculum will be implemented “within the acceptable cultural values and norms of the Ghanaian Society.”

The service also assured that no special sessions “have been organised or will ever be organised by the GES to train students as advocates for sexual rights, let alone LGBT rights which are culturally, socially, legally, moral and religiously alien to Ghana.”

  • Liverpool faces possible expulsion from the English League Cup

Liverpool faces possible expulsion from the English League Cup for fielding an ineligible player in last Wednesday’s 2-0 third round victory over MK Dons.

Reports have identified Spanish midfielder Pedro Chirivella, who came on as a second half substitute in the win, earning the European champion a high profile tie against Arsenal in the last 16 of the knockout tournament.

Chirivella, who was making his first appearance for Liverpool since May 2016, spent the second half of last season on loan at Spanish second division club Extremadura, which means he would have required new international clearance when he returned to his parent club in the summer.

Liverpool requested that in July but the process can only be completed with the Football Association’s intervention and it is unclear if the necessary paperwork was in place.

  • 3000-yr-old 21-inch stone penis discovered in Sweden

A large stone penis has been uncovered by archaeologists in Sweden who believe it may have been used for sacrificial fertility rituals.

The impressive 21-inch stone was discovered during an excavation in Rollsbo near Gothenburg.

It was originally thought to be a Bronze Age grave but has now been linked to a fertility cult.

Read:President Trump demands Sweden free US rapper

Archaeologist Gisela Ängeby told local paper the Göteborgs-Posten: ‘It has a distinct phallus shape. I thought when I came across it that “oh my god it can’t be true.”

‘I showed the picture to colleagues and there is no discussion, it has a very penis-like shape.’

Phallic stones often show up during excavations but it is rare to find one so closely modeled on the real thing, leading the team to their fertility ritual theory.

In addition to the stone phallus, the archaeologists found animal bones and shaped stones.

No human bones were found, leading them to discard their original theory of a graveyard but evidence show that animals may have been slaughtered there as part of a fertility ritual.

Read:Skydiving plane crash kills nine in Sweden

The researchers believe it was a sacrificial site from the later part of the Bronze Age, between 1800 and 500 BC.

Gisela said: ‘I believe that in connection with the erection, it was used to offer sacrifices, for example within the framework of a fertility cult.’

Remarkably, the archaeologists believe the stone may have had its shape naturally before it was later refined.

Asante Kotoko head coach, Kjetil Zachariassen, has admitted that his team lacked the requisite know-how to handle the their second leg of the CAF Champions League qualifier against Etoile du Sahel on Sunday.

Kotoko held a 2-0 lead from the first leg and they needed to avoid losing heavily to stay in the competition.

However, they could not handle the task and lost 3-0 on the night leading to their exit from the CAF Champions League and entry into the CAF Confederation Cup playoff stage.

They showed that they had more experienced and they used that knowledge. We showed that were we did not have too much experience for this level.

We have to learn from this and use the lessons in the CAF Confederation Cup.”

Before the start of the competition, Zachariassen was given a task of getting to the group stage of the competition but he conceded that his team was currently not fully built to face the tests the competition.

Read:Zachariassen impressed with the mentality of Kotoko players

“We need to learn a lot of things from the experience. We were not good mentally and we have to improve on that. This is our level at the moment.

We are in the Confederation Cup and I think that is the right level for us. We have to be realistic. I have told the fans to be realistic because we have only worked together for three months and other teams have been working for years.”

Kotoko will now wait for CAF to conduct the draw for the Confederation Cup playoff to see if they can get into the group stage of the competition.

They will face any of the teams that have made it from the previous round of the Confederation Cup.

Chinese police have arrested a fugitive who’d been on the run for 17 years, after they used drones to spot his cave hideout.

The 63-year old, named Song Jiang by the police, had been jailed for trafficking women and children but escaped from a prison camp in 2002.

He had been living in a tiny cave cut off from human interaction for years.

It’s the last day of legal tender for Kenya’s old 1,000 shilling banknote and other smaller denominations.

New banknotes were introduced in June, with customers given four months to exchange them for the new currency.

The governor of the Central Bank Patrick Njoroge said the operation was intended to tackle corruption and illicit financial flows.

The design of the new currency, which features an image of a statue of Kenya’s first President, Jomo Kenyatta – the current president’s father, has sparked anger among some Kenyans.

  • Cameroon dialogue starts as Anglophone separatists pull out

Cameroon starts a national dialogue on Monday in a bid to end a separatist conflict in the country’s anglophone provinces though key rebel leaders have already refused to participate.

Nearly 3,000 people have died and half a million fled their homes since fighting broke out in 2017 between the army and armed fighters who want independence for Cameroon’s two English-speaking provinces.

The talks, led by Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, are scheduled from September 30 to October 4 at the Congressional palace in the capital Yaounde.

President Paul Biya, who has been in power for 37 years, hopes the talks will end crisis that is also hurting the economy of the coffee and cocoa-producing Central African state.

October 1 marks the second anniversary of the spiral towards conflict – the declaration of the self-described “Republic of Ambazonia” for Cameroon’s English-speaking minority.

Even before it began, the national dialogue ran into trouble with many activists arrested and experts voicing scepticism that it would yield tangible results.

English-speakers account for about a fifth of Cameroon’s population of 24 million, who are majority French-speaking.

Read:Cameroon leader wants talks to end separatist crisis

Anglophones are mainly concentrated in two western areas, the Northwest Region and the Southwest Region that were incorporated into the French-speaking state after the colonial era in Africa wound down six decades ago. Many locals here complain of discrimination and marginalisation.

In a report published last week, the International Crisis Group (ICG) estimated that around 3,000 people have been killed by separatist violence and the military crackdown.

The ICG said the talks do not include separatists or Anglophone leaders who support more federalist solutions.

“It thus risks further frustrating Anglophones widening the gulf between the two sides and empowering hardliners,” the group said.

“The government should make greater space for Anglophones, particularly federalists who are willing to attend. It should also seek a neutral facilitator.”

Biya’s government has rejected both a return to more federalism and any proposed separation.

But Anglophone supporters are also divided between those two options for their regions.

The government’s dialogue spokesman George Ewane said Cameroonian authorities had held preliminary discussions with some separatists, adding that even hardliners were welcome to join the talks.

    ‘Smokescreen’

Mark Bareta, a separatist leader who is very active on social media, was the one most open to dialogue and it was through him that invitations to the others were sent, Ewane said.

But on Friday, Bareta announced that he was pulling out, saying that “the only way to have real negotiations is to hold them on neutral territory.”

    Read:Cameroon prisoners live stream riot

Of the 16 separatist leaders invited, those heading armed groups such as Ebenezer Akwanga and Cho Ayaba are also snubbing the talks.

Akwanga told AFP that the event was a “smokescreen for the international community rather than an attempt to secure a complete and lasting solution… to the annexation of our country, Southern Cameroons”.

Most of the leaders have expressed willingness to hold talks with the government but in the presence of an international mediator and in a foreign country with the terms for secession the main item on the agenda, according to the ICG.

However, more moderate Anglophones like Cardinal Christian Tumi, the influential archbishop of Cameroon’s commercial capital Douala, have welcomed the initiative and urged the separatists to participate.

    ‘We can’t talk to ghosts’

An official from the Southwest region said traditional chiefs had asked armed groups to attend the talks but they had spurned the offer.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, however asked the groups to “emerge from the woodwork”, adding that “measures have been taken to ensure the security of those who attend.

“We cannot talk with ghosts,” the official said.

Locals are meanwhile divided about the outcome of the talks.

“No good can come of this. It’s a game,” said a hardcore secessionist who identified himself as Agbor.

“If we must go for talks, it would be to discuss the terms of separation and not anything else,” he said.

But Jeannette Benga, a prominent figure of civil society in Buea, the capital of the Southwest region, voiced hope that “the two come to an agreement.”

Blaise Chamango, the head of an NGO said the five-day talks were not enough to “debate the anglophone crisis and the other major problems in Cameroon.”

Sports company Asics has apologised after screens outside a flagship store in Auckland, New Zealand, showed pornography for several hours.

The content played on the store’s promotional outdoor screens above the entrance until staff arrived at 10am on Sunday to open the shop.

  • Bridge over River Pra restored

The steel bridge over the Pra River at Paawudu which links the Akyemansa District in the Eastern Region to New Edubiase in the Ashanti Region has been repaired and reopened to traffic.

The bridge was damaged about six months ago when a low-bed articulated truck carrying an earth-moving machine destroyed parts of it and blocked access to other road users on March 28, 2019.

    Damage

Most of the bolts and nuts holding the steel bridge in position got removed from their joints, causing half of the bridge to cave in.

The collapse of the bridge compelled drivers and other commuters travelling from Oda, Ayirebi, Akyem Ofoase, Asamankese and Agona Swedru to Kumasi, Obuasi and vice versa to make a detour through Akyem Aperade to join the main Cape Coast-Kumasi road at Brofoyedu at a huge cost and inconvenience.

The Akyemansa District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Paul Asamoah, opened the rehabilitated bridge in a ceremony at Paawudu last Wednesday.

    Gratitude

He said he and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayirebi, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, had appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Chief of Staff, Ms Frema Osei-Opare, and the Ministry of Roads and Highways for the early rehabilitation of the damaged bridge to restore traffic along that route.

Read: V/R: Sokode-Bame road closed due to weak bridge

Mr Asamoah said the appeal yielded positive response, as the Bridge Maintenance Unit of the Ghana Highways Authority was awarded the contract to repair the bridge, which took the department about six weeks to complete.

The DCE expressed gratitude to the government and other personalities and organisations which contributed towards the rehabilitation of the bridge.

He advised motorists plying the route to be conscious of traffic regulations and the weight they carried across important projects such as the bridge and to avoid overloading their vehicles to sustain the full life span of the bridge.

  • Saudi crown prince warns of ‘Iran threat’ to global oil

Saudi Arabia’s crown prince has warned that oil prices could rise to “unimaginably high numbers” if the world does not act to deter Iran.

Mohammed bin Salman said a war between Saudi Arabia and Iran would ruin the global economy, following an attack on its oil facilities two weeks ago which it blames on Tehran.

Speaking to CBS News, he also said he accepted some responsibility for the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

But he denied personally ordering it.

The prince, who is considered the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, is suspected of personally targeting Mr Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist critical of the government in Riyadh.

Mr Khashoggi was killed in Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Turkey on 2 October 2018.

In an interview with CBS’ 60 Minutes news programme on Sunday, he said: “I take full responsibility as a leader in Saudi Arabia, especially since it [the killing] was committed by individuals working for the Saudi government.”

    Read:Saudi Arabia deports 22 Ghanaians

However, he denied ordering the killing of Mr Khashoggi directly, or having knowledge of it at the time.

Saudi authorities have since blamed a “rogue” operation for his murder and put 11 men on trial.

What about the crown prince’s oil warning?

Iran has denied any involvement in the attacks on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities.

But Mohammed bin Salman, the heir to the Saudi throne, said: “If the world does not take a strong and firm action to deter Iran, we will see further escalations that will threaten world interests.”

“Oil supplies will be disrupted and oil prices will jump to unimaginably high numbers that we haven’t seen in our lifetimes.”

He said the Middle East region “represents about 30% of the world’s energy supplies, about 20% of global trade passages, about 4% of the world GDP”.

“Imagine all of these three things stop. This means a total collapse of the global economy, and not just Saudi Arabia or the Middle East countries,” the prince said.

And what about the drone attacks?

Saudi Arabia says 18 drones and seven cruise missiles were fired on the country’s two oil facilities in Abqaid and Aramco on 14 September.

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels have said they were behind the attacks.

Read:U.S. briefly overtakes Saudi Arabia as top oil exporter IEA

But Saudi Arabia as well as the US, a key ally, blame Iran for the strikes that knocked out about 5% of global oil supply and sent oil prices soaring.

US President Donald Trump has warned that Washington has “many options” in response, including an “ultimate option”.

What’s the background to all this?

Iran is the regional rival of Saudi Arabia and an opponent of the US, which pulled out of a treaty aimed at limiting Tehran’s nuclear programme after Mr Trump took power.

US-Iran tensions have risen markedly this year.

The US said Iran was behind attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf in June and July, as well as on another four in May.

Tehran rejected the accusations in both cases.

The white, powdery substance, which was concealed in a bag, was on its way into Ghana, but officials could not immediately tell its intended final destination.

A preliminary test at the Customs Office in Aflao proved positive for the banned substance, the Chief Revenue Officer (Communications and Public Affairs) at the Customs Division, Mr Johnson?Menlah Yankey, told the Daily Graphic in Accra on Sunday, September 29.

The two men were in charge of the bag in which the banned substance was found.

Mr Yankey said the cocaine had also been handed over to NACOB.

“The cocaine seizure is yet another tremendous accomplishment of the Customs Division, working in collaboration with NACOB,” he said.

    Checks

According to Mr Yankey, about 5 p.m. last Saturday, Customs officers at the Kpoglo Border Post undertook their usual security checks on passengers crossing the border.

In the process, they saw a wrapped substance in a bag, and, suspecting that it was a banned drug, the officers brought in NACOB and further examination proved that it was cocaine.

“The two men were immediately arrested and handed over to NACOB for further investigations,” he said.

“Our men at the entry points will continue to cooperate with other law enforcement agencies to prevent contrabands from entering our country,” he said.

    Three weeks earlier

Mr Yankey disclosed that about three weeks ago, other “large quantities of cocaine and heroin were busted at the same Kpoglo Border Post”.

He said the drugs were in a Toyota Highlander vehicle, where quantities of fake $100 notes were also found.

The driver of the vehicle, however, escaped.
