Fifty-nine died within about one year of leaving Ebola treatment units, a mortality risk five times that of the general Guinean population.

The cause of death for 62% of those who died within a year was tentatively attributed to kidney failure.

The study indicated that death rates were higher among those who had stayed in hospital for longer.

  • Hurricane Dorian: US braced for ‘life-threatening’ storm surge

Hurricane Dorian is expected to bring a “life-threatening storm surge” up the US east coast after causing destruction and at least 20 deaths in the Bahamas.

Residents from Georgia all the way up to Virginia are warned to listen to emergency advice as the category three hurricane slowly moves north.

Police say parts of Charleston, South Carolina, have flooded and conditions are “beginning to deteriorate”.

Dorian weakened after hitting the Bahamas but has now strengthened again.

Read:Hurricane Dorian: Storm strengthens to category 4

It currently has maximum sustained winds of 115mph (185km/h).

On 1 September it hit the Bahamas with winds of up to 185mph (298km/h) – equalling the highest ever recorded at landfall. It battered the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama, in the north of the archipelago, for two days.

Bahamas PM Hubert Minnis called the storm “one of the greatest national crises in our country’s history”. He expected the number of fatalities to increase.

What’s the latest on the storm?

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that at 06:00GMT Dorian was 170km (105 miles) south-east of Charleston and moving north at about 11km/h (7mph).

It is expected to turn north-east on Thursday and speed up.

The NHC warns that a “life-threatening storm surge with significant coastal flooding is expected along a large portion of the south-east and mid-Atlantic coasts of the United States in the next couple of days”.

South Carolina is preparing for a record storm surge and the effects are already being felt. Some 20,000 people are without power in Charleston County.

Dorian is forecast to move “near or over” the coast of South Carolina on Thursday, then the coast of North Carolina overnight and on Friday.

Graphics showed waters could rise up to 8ft (2.4m) above ground level on the South Carolina coast, and up to 15in of rain could fall in the coming days.

“Time to get out is running out,” the state’s governor Henry McMaster told reporters.

Read:Hurricane Dorian: Pleas for help as storm stalls over Bahamas

“Water levels could rise well in advance of the arrival of strong winds,” the NHC said, adding these storm surges are expected “regardless of the exact track of Dorian’s centre”.

More than 2.2 million people have been ordered to evacuate along the eastern seaboard.

US President Donald Trump earlier held up a map incorrectly suggesting Dorian could hit Alabama. Some observers said it looked as though a line around the state was drawn with a felt pen.

The president has since said he did not know why the chart showed this.

Presidential candidate Marianne Williamson meanwhile earlier suggested on Twitter that prayer could drive the storm away. She defended her now-deleted tweet, claiming that those praying should not be treated with “mockery or condescension”.

    What happened in the Bahamas?

Although Grand Bahama suffered severe damage and floods, the northern Abaco Islands were hardest hit. Footage taken from the air showed vast swathes of destruction. Homes, roads and businesses have been torn apart, and high waters remain.

Health Minister Duane Sands told the Washington Post 17 had died in the Abaco Islands and three on Grand Bahama. These figures are reportedly expected to rise as rescuers search through the devastated country.

“There’s nothing left in most of Marsh Harbour,” said Alicia Cook, who evacuated from the area in the Abaco Islands. “People are starting to panic: pillaging, looting.”

Bob Cornea also spoke to the BBC in the capital Nassau after being evacuated from Marsh Harbour. He said he and his wife took shelter on the second storey of their son’s house.

“Water was up to my neck. It stayed like that for two or three hours… My son… he got us out and we got over to safety.

“We’ve been through all kinds of hurricanes, all kinds of storms: never anything that bad. I mean, it was like we were standing in the middle of the ocean. That’s what it looked like. Waves, the water just crashing in over us. Horrifying. Absolutely horrifying.”

The British Royal Navy vessel RFA Mounts Bay has begun landing personnel and emergency aid to the Abacos. Helicopters and three UK humanitarian experts have been helping to co-ordinate the rescue response.

Bringing in aid to Grand Bahama has been hampered by severe damage to its airport.

The International Red Cross fears 45% of homes on Grand Bahama and the Abacos – some 13,000 properties – have been severely damaged or destroyed.

Some 70,000 people are in “immediate need” of aid, UN officials said.

Is climate change making hurricanes worse?

Scientists cannot say whether climate change is increasing the number of hurricanes, but the ones that do happen are likely to be more powerful and more destructive because of our warming climate, says BBC Weather’s Tomasz Schafernaker.

    Here’s why:

-An increase in sea surface temperatures strengthens the wind speeds within storms and also raises the amount of precipitation a hurricane will dump

-Sea levels are expected to increase by one to four feet over the next century, bringing the potential of far worse damage from sea surges and coastal flooding during storms.

  • Limited edition electric Volkswagen sells out before launch

Volkswagen has sold out the limited edition of its ID.3, the first of a new generation of electric cars that the company is due to unveil at the Frankfurt motor show next week.

The German carmaker said Wednesday it had received 30,000 reservations for the ID.3 1ST since online bookings opened in May.

There were no plans to increase the number of first edition models available for purchase, Volkswagen spokesperson Christoph Oemisch told CNN Business.
People still interested in an ID.3 1ST, or an early model in the ID.3 production series, should still register, as Volkswagen was drawing up waiting lists, said Jürgen Stackmann, the head of Volkswagen passenger car sales, in a statement.

“Experience indicates that there may still be some movement on the waiting list up to the deadline for binding orders,” he said.

Read:Volkswagen signs MoU with Government of Ghana

The ID.3 is the first of 70 electric models that the Volkswagen Group plans to release in the next decade as it makes an aggressive move towards electric cars, driven by pressure from regulators and the fallout from its diesel emissions scandal.

But it is not alone among traditional carmakers in pouring money into electric cars, as expectations rise of future mass adoption, encouraged by falling battery costs and government subsidies.

Elon Musk’s Tesla (TSLA) has the headstart — it sold more than 220,000 electric cars in 2018, according to LMC Automotive, roughly 70,000 more than its nearest competitor, Chinese state-owned BAIC Group.

Still, the race is now well and truly underway.

Read:Ferrari will expand its lineup of road cars, but not too much

The ID.3 is the first vehicle to be built on Volkswagen’s new modular electric car production platform, or MEB — a sign of the huge investment the company is making. Volkswagen’s earlier electric cars, the e-Up! and e-Golf, were built on platforms made for petrol and diesel cars.

“The ID.3 has the exterior of a Golf more or less but the interior dimensions of a Passat because there is so much more room inside,” said Oemisch. It has a range of 261 miles (420 kilometers), higher than previous Volkswagen electric models.

Production of the ID.3 will start at the end of 2019, with the first vehicles delivered around the middle of next year. Future electric vehicles include the Audi E-Tron and Porsche Taycan.

Most of the pre-bookings for the ID.3, which required a €1,000 ($1,100) deposit, came from Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom, Volkswagen said. The limited edition will cost less than €40,000 ($44,000) in Germany, while the price of the ID.3 series mass production model will start below €30,000 ($33,000).

Volkswagen will also unveil its “younger, more modern” new brand and logo at the Frankfurt motor show, said Oemisch.

  • World food prices dip in Aug for third month running – U.N. FAO

World food prices fell for a third month running in August, pushed down by a sharp drop in the prices of sugar, wheat and maize, the United Nations food agency said on Thursday.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) food price index, which measures monthly changes for a basket of cereals, oilseeds, dairy products, meat and sugar, averaged 169.8 points last month from an upwardly revised 171.7 points in July.

That figure was previously given as 170.9.

FAO also predicted that cereal supplies would be more abundant in the 2019/20 period than previously expected.

Read:France puts up food and drink prices under new law

The FAO cereal price index plunged 6.4% in August month-on-month thanks to big drops in the prices of wheat and major course grains, especially maize. By contrast, rice prices rose.

Sugar prices also fell markedly in August, dropping 4% on the previous month “largely on the back of a weakening Brazilian real, which tends to incentivize sugar exports,” FAO said.

These drops failed to offset climbs in other indices, with the vegetable oil price index gaining 5.9% and both meat and dairy prices posting increases of 0.5%.

Read:Millions malnourished in Pakistan despite abundance of food

FAO said global cereal supplies in 2019/20 were expected to be higher than previously anticipated at 2.708 billion tonnes, up 23 million tonnes on the last estimate posted in July and some 55.4 million tonnes up on 2018 levels.

“Almost the entire monthly increase is on account of an upward revision made to the forecast for world maize production,” FAO said.

“These more buoyant expectations mostly stem from improved yield prospects in the United States, despite excessive rainfall through much of the planting season.”

This expected increase outweighed an anticipated reduction in global wheat production in 2019, which FAO now sees at 767 million tonnes, 4 million tonnes lower than in the last forecast posted in July.

  • Morsi’s son Abdullah dies of heart attack in Cairo hospital

The youngest son of late Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi died of an alleged heart attack at a hospital in Cairo, sources told Al Jazeera.

Abdullah Morsi, who was in his mid-twenties, died on Wednesday at the Oasis hospital in Giza in the southwest of the capital, the sources said.

A Morsi family source confirmed his death to Anadolu Agency without giving further details.

Egypt’s health ministry has yet to comment on his death.

Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, died on June 17 while standing trial for charges that he and legal observers said were politically motivated.

Read:Egypt sentences 75 to death over 2013 protests

He was deposed in a 2013 military coup carried out by current President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi following a year in power.

Several local news sites reported the death of Abdullah Morsi, saying there was no criminal suspicion, noting that Morsi’s son had suffered several previous health scares, and was saddened by his father’s death.

Morsi’s second son, Ahmed, said his younger brother, Abdullah, was driving his car and had sudden spasms. He was immediately taken to hospital but doctors were unable to revive him.

“Abdullah died at the hospital after suffering a heart attack,” Anadolu cited Ahmed Morsi as saying.

    Outspoken critic

Abdullah Morsi had been imprisoned several times in recent years. He had been accused and acquitted of drug use, in a case involving allegations that he and legal observers said were fabricated.

Read:Egypt court sentences 75 to death over 2013 pro-Morsi protests

Among Morsi’s children, Abdullah was the most outspoken critic of the Egyptian government. He was also the most supportive of his father and his defence during his trial and stay in prison.

In a Twitter post after his father’s death, Abdullah accused a number of Egyptian officials whom he called “partners” of el-Sisi “in killing the martyr president”.

He particularly accused incumbent and former interior ministers Mahmoud Tawfiq and Magdy Abdel Ghaffar, respectively.

At the time of his death, Morsi – a leading member of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood who won the country’s presidential election in 2012 – faced a host of legal charges, which he, along with various human rights groups and independent observers, said were politically motivated.

  • South Africa shuts embassy in Nigeria after reprisal attacks

South Africa has temporarily closed its embassy in Nigeria following violence against South African businesses in reprisal for attacks on foreign-owned stores in Johannesburg, while Nigeria has announced plans to evacuate its nationals from South Africa.

South African Foreign Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor said on Thursday that the embassy was closed temporarily after threats led to fears for staff safety.

“There is Afrophobia we are sensing that exists, there is resentment and we need to address that,” Pandor told Reuters news agency.

Foreign ministry spokesman Lunga Ngqengelele confirmed that the diplomatic missions in the Nigerian cities of Lagos and Abuja have been closed since Wednesday.

The announcement, which signals worsening diplomatic relations between the two African countries, comes after Nigeria introduced plans to evacuate its nationals from South Africa following a wave of attacks on foreigners, including Nigerians.

    Evacuation offer

The Nigerian foreign ministry said Air Peace, a commercial airline, had offered to send an aircraft on Friday to evacuate nationals who were willing to return, “free of charge”.

“The general public is hereby advised to inform their relatives in South Africa to take advantage of this laudable gesture,” Nigerian foreign ministry spokesman Ferdinand Nwonye said on Wednesday.

Read:Xenophobic attacks: Nigerian airline to evacuate citizens free of charge

“Interested Nigerians are therefore advised to liaise with the High Commission of Nigeria in Pretoria and the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg for further necessary arrangement.”

The statement was made after Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama said Nigeria would not cave to Pretoria.

“The South African government has to assume its responsibilities and protect Nigerians in South Africa and we have to hold them to account and they have to do that as well as pay full compensation,” he said.

    Tensions rising

It also came a day after Nigeria pulled out of the World Economic Forum (WEF) gathering in Cape Town, South Africa, casting a cloud over initiatives to boost intra-African trade.

Nigeria also recalled its High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Kabiru Bala.

A presidential source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Nigeria also demanded full compensation for the loss of life and property of Nigerians affected by the attacks.

Rioting in South Africa has killed at least five people in Johannesburg and Pretoria in recent days.

Police in the country has yet to pinpoint what triggered the violence, which began on Sunday, when protesters armed with makeshift weapons roamed the streets of Pretoria’s business district, pelting shops with rocks and petrol bombs and running off with goods.

Read:Stop tagging South Africans xenophobic South Africa High Commissioner

Authorities have made almost 300 arrests, while people across the continent have protested and voiced their anger on social media.

Analysts have noted contributing factors to the latest violence include high unemployment and frustration with limited economic opportunities.

    Reprisal attacks

On Tuesday, Nigerians launched what appeared to be reprisals against South African businesses in several cities across the country. Police said dozens have been arrested for looting and attacks on South African retail and telecoms firms.

Abuja has repeatedly condemned the reprisals, which it insisted could only hurt Nigerians working in the affected firms.

Nigerian police said on Wednesday that security had been strengthened around South African businesses.

  • Mac Miller: Man charged over rapper’s death

A man has been charged with selling drugs to Mac Miller before he died.

The rapper overdosed in September last year.

Prosecutors in Los Angeles say he thought he’d been sold a painkiller called oxycodone – but it had actually been laced with fentanyl, a powerful drug that is fifty times more potent than heroin.

Cameron James Petit, who’s 28 and from LA, has been arrested on suspicion of distributing a controlled substance.

Mac Miller, whose real name was Malcolm McCormick, was 26 when he died.

The coroner found fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol in his body and concluded he’d accidentally taken an overdose.

Prosecutors say their evidence against Cameron James Petit includes messages he sent after the body was discovered.

He told a friend: “Most likely I will die in jail.”

  • China says its drone can hunt like Spiderman

Call it the Spiderman of drones.

China says it has developed a new hunter drone that can disable other drones — or even small aircraft — by firing a 16-square-meter (172 square feet) web at them.

“Caught by the web, the hostile drone should lose power and fall to ground,” said a report on the Chinese military’s English-language website.

Developed by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, the drone can work alone but also can integrate with China’s defense system for small, slow and low-flying targets, according to the report.

Read:Changi Airport: Drones disrupt flights in Singapore

The hexacopter drone can also perform surveillance and reconnaissance, it said.

This is the second drone advance announced by China in recent weeks. At an airshow in Russia in August, China displayed the stealth-capable LJ-I, a target drone it says will help the People’s Liberation Army Air Force prepare for any potential combat with the F-35 stealth fighters deployed by the US and its partners in the Pacific.

Designed for target practice, the LJ-I can be flown in formations to simulate actual combat conditions, according to the report on the state-sponsored Global Times.

Read:Drone no-fly zone to be widened after Gatwick chaos

A video played at the airshow showed a Chinese bomber releasing several of the LJ-I drones, which then simulated an attack on a PLA Navy destroyer.

“The destroyer was able to detect the drones with its radar system despite them being stealthy, launched missiles to destroy those that came from above, and fired a close-in gun to shoot down one skimming over the surface of the sea,” the Global Times report said.

China is a world leader in drone technology, especially smaller, low-cost ones, a fact acknowledged by the Pentagon recently when it set up a program to seek investors in making American counterparts.

    Former President, John Dramani Mahama wrote;

“The xenophobic attacks on Africans in Alexandra, South Africa are condemnable and run absolutely contrary to all our efforts at continental integration. Clearly, and as I have said in the past, the perpetrators of these gruesome attacks are ignorant of the continental solidarity that was required to defeat apartheid and give birth to the new South African nation. • Choose your job or political office – Public servants cautioned

The Public Services Commission has sent a stern warning to governing boards and councils of public agencies/organisations to caution their members who wish to engage in active party politics to adhere to the Constitutional Provisions regarding their decisions.

In a statement signed by Janet Ampadu Fofie, Chairman of the Commission, she directed that public officers, who intend to take part in active political activities, whether directly or indirectly, should first resign from the Public Service before taking the proximate step towards the realisation of their ambitions to be a Member of Parliament or engage in open party politics.

Read: Akufo-Addo considers bill to allow dual citizens to hold public office

The statement furthermore indicated that a public officer shall not, in the performance of his/her official functions, act as an agent for or further the interest of a political party, or openly support a political party or candidate in deed or action.

The Commission further directed that governing boards and councils must take all the necessary steps to ensure adherence and compliance with this directive.

The Chairman stated that the directive was issued because the attention of the Public Services Commission had been drawn to a number of public servants who have declared their intentions to contest in political party primaries for members of parliament (MPs) during the 2020 General Elections.

“It has come to the attention of the Public Services Commission that a number of public servants have declared their intentions to contest in political party primaries as members of parliament during the December 2020 General Elections. Following numerous consultation and opinions by the Attorney General in 2008, 2012 and 2015, the Commission reiterates that participation of public officers in party politics is governed by constitutional provisions.”

An attention has also been drawn to a Wednesday July 15, 2008 ruling made by the Supreme Court on similar issues as the basis for which some public servants want to engage in party politics.

The ruling, which was pronounced by a seven-member panel, directed that public servants at the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Highways Authority could run for any political office.

The ruling indicated that staff of the aforementioned institutions, and others who were not civil servants, were not barred from holding political positions. The two main defendants in the case were the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman for Efutu in the Central Region, Lawrence Lamptey, and the Chief Technical Officer at the Ghana Highways Authority, Ernestina Yawson.

The plaintiff, Kwadjoga Adra, led by his lawyer, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Effutu, filed a motion at the Supreme Court to stop the two staff from holding positions in the National Democratic Congress in the Efutu Constituency, while serving in their respective public offices. The plaintiff said this constituted a violation of the Civil Service Act, which forbids civil servants from holding political office, but the highest court ruled against it, saying the two defendants were not civil servants and could go ahead to contest for any position in any political party in the country.

But Madam Janet said that people who are seeking to hold political offices should be guided by the provisions of the Constitution.

Read: Amidu tempers expectations, reminds of limitations of Special Prosecutor Office

She said Clause (2) Article 55 of 1992 Constitution provides that “Every citizen in Ghana of voting age has the right to join a political party,” while Paragraph (e) Clause (1) of Article 21 of the Constitution provides for “Freedom of association, which shall include freedom of form or join trade unions or other association, national and international, for the protection of their interests!”

She also cited Clause (3) of the Article 21 of the Constitution, which states that “all citizens shall have the right and freedom to form or join political parties, and to participate in political activities, subject to such qualifications and laws as are necessary in a free and democratic society, and are consistent with this Constitution.”

The Constitution notes, however, in Article 284 that: “A public officer shall not put himself/herself in a position where his personal interest conflicts, or is likely to conflict, with the performance of the functions of his office,” she said.

Therefore, “a public officer, who intends to take part in active political activities, whether directly or indirectly, should first resign from the Public Service before taking the proximate steps towards the realisation of the ambition to be a member of parliament, or engage in open party politics.

  • M&S expected to be kicked out of FTSE 100

The end of an era is looming for Marks and Spencer, with the retail giant expected to be relegated from the FTSE 100 index of Britain’s biggest listed companies on Wednesday.

If it is demoted, it will be the first time M&S has not been a FTSE 100 member since the index was launched in 1984.

The food and fashion giant has had a hard year, with its shares down 40%.

Its all-important clothing business has continued to struggle, and its food business has shown signs of weakness.

“Symbolically, falling out of the FTSE is just another milestone in the slow-but-steady decline of what used to be a great British institution,” says retail expert Richard Hyman.

Read:Hurricane Dorian: Pleas for help as storm stalls over Bahamas

What is the FTSE 100 and why does it matter?

The FTSE 100 contains the 100 largest UK-listed firms, ranked by market value. Membership of the index is seen as a mark of prestige.

The index is reshuffled four times a year, allowing a handful of companies to enter, while a number of stragglers slip out into the lower tier FTSE 250.

Men close to relegation for a while as investors have steadily lost faith in the brand and it is almost certain to be demoted on Wednesday, bar some large market moves.

As of Tuesday morning, the retailer had a market value of £3.6bn – less than half of what it was worth back in November 2015.

By comparison FTSE-listed fashion rival Next is worth £7.9bn.

    What’s gone wrong?

Demotion would be a huge fall from grace for M&S, which in 1998 became the first British retailer to make a pre-tax profit of more than £1bn.

The biggest issue, say analysts, has been the decline of its clothing business, which accounts for a large portion of profits.

“There has been a decade-long complaint by investors and customers that it has failed to revamp its clothing lines, especially within womenswear, and lacks appeal for the younger generations,” says Helal Miah, an analyst at the Share Centre.

“The group has also been too slow to adapt to online retailing and has been left behind by others who offer a more compelling online service.”

M&S now faces enormous competition from fashion giants such as Primark on the High Street and Asos online. Accusations that its clothing is too dowdy and conservative still linger, too.

However, for Richard Hyman the issue goes deeper – he thinks the brand has lost touch with its customers.

Read:Brexit: Boris Johnson faces showdown in Parliament

“M&S was about quality at an unbeatable price, not fashion for fashion’s sake. But over time they have sacrificed those values to try and cut costs and become too corporate.”

This has created a “negative spiral”, he says, where less is invested in its product, quality falls, and design goes by the wayside.

“Your sales keep falling so you cut costs further. It is very hard to get out of.”

    What about the food business?

Until recently M&S’s food business had been a bright spot amid the gloom, but over the past few years sales in this part of the business have struggled as well.

To stem the decline, in February this year M&S forged a joint venture with Ocado, agreeing to buy 50% of its retail business for a whopping £750m.

Laith Khalaf, an analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, says the deal makes sense in many ways, as it will allow M&S to offer a much broader range of food. Online shopping is also a growth area

However, he says investors have been sceptical about the partnership and many think M&S has overpaid.

“Ocado is not yet making a profit from food sales so the rewards of this partnership are uncertain.

“It’s also a new kind of partnership which comes with risks attached. There is a risk that by going to Ocado, M&S could send customers to Waitrose, which also works with Ocado.”

    Can they turn things around?

On top of these problems, M&S is dealing with a nationwide consumer spending slowdown that has forced some High Street retailers to close stores.

To try to revive the business, chief executive Stuart Rowe launched a “radical” turnaround plan last year which will see 100 under-performing stores closed by 2022 – although the number could be higher.

However, analysts are sceptical that this will be enough to get it back on track.

“I think it is possible but unfortunately a lot of things are outside of their control,” says Mr Khalaf.

“One of those is the UK economy and all the uncertainty about Brexit, which has also been big factor in denting the share price.

“If there is a further fall in the pound [because of Brexit] that could hit retailers as they buy many imported goods in dollars. A wider downturn in the economy could also hit M&S.”

Mr Hyman also has his doubts about the strategy.

“M&S used to be the pivotal player on the High Street but they are going down the wrong road in my opinion. When you see a business which is more about cutting costs than driving sales the alarm bells should be ringing.”

Ghana’s foreign-based players have been asked to buy their own air tickets for the 2019 CAF U-23 Cup of Nations final qualifying round tie against Algeria this month, GHANAsoccernet.com can exclusively report.

The country’s Ministry of Youth and Sports are cash-strapped and will not pay for the travel of foreign-based players for the match against the North African side in Accra on Friday September 6.

The Ministry has asked the 11-players invited for the two-legged ties to borne the cost of their travel arrangements in a dramatic twist to the sorry financial situation of the ministry, GHANAsoccernet.com can report.

Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko has called up 11 experienced foreign-based players as he seeks to lead the team to qualify for the African U23 championship and subsequently make it to the Olympic Games for the first time since 2004.

Campbell, an Olympic gold medallist in 2012, suffered the third loss of his 23-fight professional career but deserves huge praise for the way he fought back to hear the final bell.

“He is so good, he adapts to any plans,” said Campbell. “Tonight was not the jackpot but my time will come.”

The Hull man was in trouble at the end of the fifth when he was caught by a crushing left hook and then a barrage of body and head shots, but was saved by the bell.

Campbell took more punishment in the sixth, but had success of his own later in that round and the next in a captivating contest.

He was floored in the 11th after a barrage of body shots and then a jab. But he got up to finish the fight, although two of the three judges did not give him a round, only a share of one.

Campbell was later taken to hospital but promoter Eddie Hearn said it was only a precautionary measure.

  • Hurricane Dorian: Storm strengthens to category 4

A powerful storm threatening the Bahamas and south-eastern coast of the US has grown to category four, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) says.

Hurricane Dorian has maximum sustained winds of nearly 145mph (225km/h).

It is expected to grow even stronger, its center potentially crossing the Bahamas before skirting Florida’s east coast early next week.

Reports from the Bahamas described tourists scrambling to leave before the closure of the international airport.

States of emergency have been declared in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina. Residents have been urged to stock enough food, water and medicine to last at least a week.

Read:Hurricane Florence: At least four dead as storm downgraded

Forecasters warn Dorian could be the region’s worst storm since category five Hurricane Andrew killed 65 people and destroyed 63,000 homes in 1992.

US President Donald Trump said he was monitoring Dorian, which he described as “an extremely dangerous storm” on Twitter.

Hurricanes, whose strength can range from category 1 to 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, tend to get stronger as they move over warm waters like those off Florida.

By the middle of next week, forecasters expect Dorian to shift eastwards, putting the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina at risk.

What’s the forecast? The NHC said “life-threatening storm surge, devastating hurricane-force winds, and heavy rains capable of life-threatening flash floods” are expected to hit the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama on Sunday.

Jeffrey Simmons, the deputy director of Bahamas’ Department of Meteorology, said storm surges of up to 15ft (4.5m) were expected.

    Read:Hurricane Florence sparks US exodus

The country’s National Emergency Management Agency believes that damage could be exacerbated by the fact that the storm’s westward motion is forecast to slow – this would keep it over the islands for longer.

A tropical storm watch is also in effect for a 120-mile (193km) stretch of Florida’s eastern coast, with hurricane-force winds possible along the state’s coast by early next week.

The coasts of Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina are also at risk of strong wings and a “dangerous storm surge” during the middle of next week.

Dorian’s exact path toward Florida remains uncertain but millions of people could be affected, as well as holiday attractions such as Walt Disney World and President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

Dorian is expected to drop up to 12in (30cm) of rain on the coastal US, with some areas getting as much as 18in. Tides in the region are already at some of their highest levels of the year, owing to a naturally occurring event.

A new moon, combined with the coming autumn equinox, has created what are known in Florida as “king tides”. These are likely to exacerbate dangerous levels of flooding, forecasters warn.

  • Hong Kong police storm metro system after protests

Hong Kong police have violently tackled suspected protesters after thousands marched in the city in defiance of a ban.

Images show police hitting people with batons and using pepper spray on a train in Hong Kong’s underground metro.

Police said they were called to the scene amid violence against citizens by “radical protesters”.

However it is unclear if all those injured and arrested in the metro system were involved in demonstrations.

Thousands of people took to the streets on Saturday to mark the fifth anniversary of China’s government banning full democratic elections in Hong Kong.

Protesters lit fires, threw petrol bombs and attacked the parliament building.

Read:Thousands of Hong Kongers brave rain to join anti-government rally

In response, police used tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon to disperse crowds, and fired live warning shots as they tried to clear the streets.

The latest protests came just a day after the arrest of several key pro-democracy activists and lawmakers in China’s special administrative region.

Hong Kong has now seen 13 successive weeks of demonstrations.

The movement grew out of rallies against a controversial extradition bill – now suspended – which would have allowed criminal suspects to be sent to mainland China for trial.

It has since become a broader pro-democracy movement in which clashes have grown more violent.

What happened in Hong Kong’s metro? During protests, crowds gathered by Prince Edward and Mong Kok stations in Hong Kong’s Kowloon neighbourhood.

Police said in a tweet that they responded at both sites after reports of “radical protesters” assaulting citizens and damaging property.

In a statement, Hong Kong’s government also said some protesters had “committed arson and “hurled miscellaneous objects and iron railings” onto railway tracks, “completely disregarding the safety of other passengers”.

Police Yolanda Yu told reporters that 40 people were subsequently arrested for unlawful assembly, criminal damage and the assault of police officers.

But several people have complained about the excessive force used by authorities.

“The train stopped. Police boarded and hit me twice with a baton,” an unnamed man told the South China Morning Post newspaper.

Read:Hong Kong activists arrested: Joshua Wong and others charged

“They didn’t arrest me. They were just venting their anger by hitting me,” he added.

MTR, which operates the city’s metro line, told local media that three stations – Prince Edward, Mongkok and Kowloon Bay – had been closed as a result of the incident. It is unclear when they will reopen.

    What else happened on Saturday?

Protesters took to the streets in the Wan Chai district, many joining a Christian march, while others demonstrated in the Causeway Bay shopping district in the pouring rain. Many carried umbrellas and wore face masks.

Demonstrators – chanting “stand with Hong Kong” and “fight for freedom” – gathered outside government offices, the local headquarters of China’s People’s Liberation Army and the city’s parliament, known as the Legislative Council.

In the Admiralty district, some protesters threw firebombs towards officers. Earlier, protesters had marched near the official residence of embattled leader Carrie Lam, who is the focal point of much of the anger.

The riot police had erected barriers around key buildings, and fired tear gas and jets of blue-dyed water from water cannon. The coloured liquid is traditionally used to make it easier for police to identify protesters.

The police later confirmed that two officers fired into the air during operations to clear protesters from the streets. Both officers fired one shot each when they felt their lives were threatened, the police department said.

Eric, a 22-year-old student, told Reuters news agency: “Telling us not to protest is like telling us not to breathe. I feel it’s my duty to fight for democracy. Maybe we win, maybe we lose, but we fight.”

The recent demonstrations have been characterised as leaderless.

On Friday police had appealed to members of the public to cut ties with “violent protesters” and had warned people not to take part in the banned march.

  • Sirhan Sirhan: Robert F Kennedy’s assassin stabbed in prison

Sirhan Sirhan, the man convicted of assassinating Robert F Kennedy, has been stabbed at a California prison, US media reports say.

Authorities said a stabbing happened at a prison near San Diego on Friday afternoon.

In a statement, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said “officers responded quickly” to the attack.

The victim, whose condition is stable, was not named in the statement.

But citing unnamed law enforcement sources, multiple US media reports have identified 75-year-old Sirhan as the victim.

Sirhan is serving a life sentence at the Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility, where the stabbing took place.

Read:Roger Rabbit animator Richard Williams dies at 86

The suspected attacker, a fellow inmate, has been placed in isolation, according to TMZ, which first reported the assault.

The motive for the attack, which is under investigation, has not been revealed by officials.

    Who is Sirhan Sirhan?

Sirhan was convicted of murdering presidential hopeful Kennedy, who he shot three times at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968.

Kennedy was shot in the kitchen of the hotel, shortly after declaring victory in California’s Democratic presidential primary to cheering crowds.

The New York senator, brother of former Democratic president John F Kennedy, died in hospital 24 hours later.

He was later buried at Arlington Cemetery, near his brother John, who was assassinated in 1963.

At his trial in 1969, Sirhan was originally sentenced to death. Three years later, however, his sentence was commuted to life in prison when California briefly outlawed capital punishment.

A Palestinian with Jordanian citizenship, Sirhan has claimed he has no recollection of shooting Kennedy.

In a TV interview, Sirhan said he felt betrayed by Kennedy’s support for Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War.

  • Tetra Pak billionaire Hans Rausing dies at 93

Hans Rausing, the Swedish billionaire who helped build food packaging company Tetra Pak into a global giant, has died aged 93.

Son of its founder, Ruben Rausing, he ran the firm from 1950 until 1995 – when he sold his share in the family business to his brother.

Mr Rausing was known for his philanthropy in Sweden and the UK.

His family’s fortune, estimated by Forbes at $12bn (£9.8bn), makes them one of the richest living in the UK.

In recent years, Mr Rausing’s family were hit by scandal, after his son was given a suspended prison sentence for failing to report the death of his wife.

    Packaging giant

Hans Rausing’s father, Ruben, founded Tetra Pak, later Tetra Laval, in Sweden in 1944.

Read:President Trump demands Sweden free US rapper

The company is widely praised for revolutionising the global food packing trade.

The original design for its innovative cardboard packaging was a tetrahedron, giving the firm its name, but the company’s fortunes only really took off in the late 1960s under the leadership of Hans and his brother Gad.

The invention of the now more common cube-shaped cartons and aseptic technology to preserve the contents helped Tetra Pak replace heavier, breakable glass bottles in a growing number of markets.

In the 1980s the Rausing brothers moved to the UK in order to avoid the higher rate of tax in their home country and Hans Rausing shot to the top of the UK’s rich list.

After he left the family firm in 1995, Mr Rausing, who lived in Wadhurst, East Sussex, devoted part of his time to philanthropy. More than £1bn was given to causes including innovation and research in medicine, human rights, culture and the environment, his family said.

In 2006 he was made an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) for his philanthropic activities.

His three children said in a joint statement: “Our father was an extraordinary man, achieving so many things in his long and distinguished career as entrepreneur and industrialist, and then as a philanthropist supporting multiple charities and foundations.

Read:International Scholarships at Linköping University in Sweden, 2019

“We are very proud of that, but most of all we will cherish our fond memories of him as a loving father and devoted family man.”

    Family controversies

His son, Hans Kristian Rausing, was sentenced in 2012 for delaying the lawful and decent burial of his wife.

The charge came after police discovered the decomposing body of Eva Rausing, 48, at the couple’s home in Belgravia, central London.

Police found the mother-of-four, who had been dead for two months, under a pile of clothing and bin bags during a police search following Hans Kristian Rausing’s arrest on suspicion of drugs possession.

The couple had fought a public battle against drug addiction after meeting in a rehabilitation centre in the 1980s.

  • Timberland, Vans and The North Face will stop using Brazilian leather in Amazon protest

A major US shoemaker will stop buying Brazilian leather while fires are ravaging the Amazon rainforest.

In one of the first major corporate responses to the blazes, VF Corp. (VFC) — which owns brands including Timberland, Vans and The North Face — said it will stop using leather from the South American country until it has “the confidence and assurance that the materials used in our products do not contribute to environmental harm in the country,” according to a statement.

Demand for beef and leather has caused huge swathes of land in the rainforest to be cleared for cattle ranches, potentially a major factor behind the fires.

Scientists have warned that the blazes, which have been raging at a record rate, could strike a devastating blow in the fight against climate change.

Read:Amazon fires: The tragic couple who died protecting their home

VF Corp. is a major player in apparel and footwear, also owning brands such as Eastpak and JanSport. VF’s activewear and outdoor brands helped the firm generate $13.8 billion in earnings for 2019, it reported in July.

Its move suggests the international outcry over the fires, and the response from populist Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, is spilling into the business world.

The Amazon, which spans eight countries and covers 40% of South America, is often referred to as “the planet’s lungs” because estimates show that nearly 20% of oxygen produced by the Earth’s land comes from rainforest. The Amazon also puts an enormous amount of water into the atmosphere and works to regulate global temperatures.

But Bolsonaro has sparred with global powers over the blazes, which number over 80,000 this year — in particular during a prickly G7 meeting in France this week.

Read:Amazon fires: Record number burning in Brazil rainforest space agency

The President’s special communications office told CNN on Tuesday morning that Brazil would turn down the $20 million aid offer that was pledged for the Amazon at the G7 summit in France the day before.

The President has since softened his stance on the financial aid, suggesting he would consider the G7’s aid if French President Emmanuel Macron apologized for accusing Bolsonaro of “lying” to him about climate commitments during trade negotiations.

The nation has also since accepted $12 million in aid from the UK government, which is a member of the G7.

Bolsonaro has repeatedly insisted the Amazon should be opened to development and has defunded the agencies responsible for cracking down on illegal activity, but he rejected accusations that he was partly responsible for the fires.

  • Satellite data shows hunger looming in Senegal, Mauritania

Hundreds of thousands of people in Senegal and Mauritania are at risk of going hungry in the coming year because not enough grass has grown to feed the region’s cattle, analysts have said.

Satellite maps show barren pastures across large swaths of the two West African countries, which means animals will die, robbing owners of their sole source of food and income.

“Livestock herding is the key pillar of food security for the area,” Alex Orenstein, a data scientist specialising on pastoralism in the Sahel, said on Friday.

“Herders feel the pain first, but it touches everyone in the region soon enough,” he said.

Read:Senegalese president to unveil Museum of Black Civilisations

A similar lack of pasture in 2017 left five million people needing food aid the subsequent year across six countries in West Africa’s Sahel region, a grassy zone below the Sahara Desert.

There are no estimates yet of the number of people who could be affected by the current situation, but in some areas, it looks worse than 2017, said Zakari Saley Bana, a disaster risk reduction adviser for the charity Action Against Hunger (ACF).

About 350,000 families depend on cattle herding in Senegal, according to a pastoralists’ association.

“The situation is very worrisome,” Saley Bana said, estimating that aid agencies will need to step up assistance.

Late rains The Sahel has a rainy season from July to September, after which herds must survive on whatever grass has grown until the next rainy season. This year, the rain did not start until late August.

Maps of vegetation growth created by ACF show severe deficits stretching across the Sahel to Chad, but most widespread in northern Senegal and southern Mauritania.

Read:Deadly stadium stampede at Madagascar v Senegal match

Starvation usually comes in May or June the year after, when people have gone the longest time without rain.

So, while poor rains in 2017 caused a hunger crisis last year, the effects of the current deficit may only be felt in 2020.

A true picture will not be clear until the end of the rainy season, but the outlook is unlikely to improve, said Orenstein.

Heavy rains now are likely to cause flooding rather than encourage plant growth, he said.

There is also a risk of conflict as herders migrate into farming areas in search of fodder, said Saley Bana.

Competition between farmers and herders over scarce resources is one of the main sources of deadly conflict in West Africa, leading to massacres this year in Mali and killing more people than the Boko Haram armed group in Nigeria.

  • 9 Colombian FARC dissidents killed in bombing raid

Colombian troops have killed nine dissidents formerly of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in an air raid, the first since the group’s former leaders rejected a 2016 peace agreement and announced a return to arms.

President Ivan Duque said on Friday he had authorised the military operation in rural areas of Colombia’s south.

Few details of the operation were released, but Duque said the dead included a rebel known by his alias, Gildardo Cucho. The fighter was part of a group that former FARC Commander Luciano Marin, known by his alias Ivan Marquez, was looking to recruit to his new rebel movement, Duque said.

“Thanks to strategic, meticulous, impeccable and rigorous work, Gildardo Cucho, a leader in this organisation, was killed,” Duque said in a televised statement from the city of Sincelejo.

Read:Columbian Government to support para sports in Ghana

“This criminal was dedicated to drug trafficking, kidnapping, the intimidation of social leaders and he was expected to be part of this threatening new group which yesterday presented itself to the country as a new rebel group – which it isn’t because it’s a narco-terrorist gang,” he said.

The operation was “a clear message” to the group to lay down their weapons, the Colombian leader added.

Minister of Defence Guillermo Botero, who said the operation had taken place in the San Vicente del Caguan region, wrote on Twitter: “The criminals are warned: they surrender or they will be defeated.”

    Peace accord
The raid came a day after Marin announced he would resume fighting, accusing Duque’s government of betraying a 2016 peace agreement under which most of the FARC’s 7,000 fighters disarmed after half a century of conflict.

Marin, who was the FARC’s chief negotiator, read a long manifesto in a video surrounded by a group of 20 heavily-armed rebels from what he said was a clandestine camp in Colombia’s eastern jungles but which authorities contend was inside Venezuela – long a safe haven for the rebel group.

He added that his forces would coordinate with Colombia’s last active rebel group, the National Liberation Army (ELN), “and those comrades who have not folded up their flags.”

The United States, a key ally of Duque’s conservative government, denounced Marin and his allies.

“We strongly repudiate recent calls by some individuals to abandon the FARC’s commitments under the 2016 peace accord,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.

Read:Ghanaian boy who studied with lanterns graduates from Harvard, Cambridge and Columbia Universities

The peace accord has come under pressure on various fronts, including the murder of hundreds of former rebels and human rights activists, delays in funding for economic efforts by former combatants, and deep political polarisation.

More than 260,000 people have been killed and millions displaced during Colombia’s decades-long conflict between the government, rebel groups, crime gangs and right-wing paramilitaries.

Dissidents from the FARC include some rebels who refused outright to demobilise under the peace deal and others who initially backed the process before returning to fight. Their forces are estimated to number more than 2,200.

Many are thought to be based in Venezuela, where President Nicolas Maduro has said former rebels commanders were welcome.

On Thursday, Duque said he would send a special army unit “with reinforced intelligence, investigation and mobility capabilities” to hunt down Marin and other holdouts.

“Colombians must be clear that we are not facing a new guerrilla, but facing the criminal threats of a gang of narco-terrorists who have the shelter and support of the dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro,” Duque said, referring to the Venezuelan president.

He announced a three billion peso (about $882,000) reward for the arrest of those appearing in the video featuring Marin.

  • Death penalty trial date set for alleged September 11 attackers

Alleged September 11 plotter Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four others held at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp will finally go to trial in 2021, almost 20 years after the devastating attack on the United States involving hijacked airliners.

A military judge set a January 2021 date for the start of the long-stalled war crimes trial of the five men being held at Guantanamo Bay on charges of planning and aiding the September 11 attacks, which led to a US invasion of and 18-year war in Afghanistan.

Mohammed, Walid bin Attash, Ramzi bin al-Shibh, Ammar al-Baluchi, and Mustafa al-Hawsawi are accused of planning and participating in the plot – allegedly hatched by al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden – to hijack four airliners and crash them into New York City’s World Trade Center and buildings in Washington, DC.

Two of the planes struck the World Trade Center’s twin towers, another hit the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed into a field in Pennsylvania killing nearly 3,000 people on September 11, 2001.

“We’ve been wanting a date for a very long time,” Terry Strada, whose husband Tom was killed in the attack, told the New York Times. “This is good news. I certainly hope nothing will happen between now and then to change this. The families have suffered long enough.”

    ‘War on terror’

Judge Shane Cohen, an Air Force colonel, set the start date in a case that has been bogged down in pretrial litigation for years.

Cohen said the trial at the US military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, “will face a host of administrative and logistics challenges”.

The five will be the first to go on trial in the “military commissions” established to handle the “war on terror” detainees captured and sent to Guantanamo after September 11.

The five were formally charged in 2012 with conspiracy, attacking civilians, murder in violation of the law of war, aircraft hijacking and terrorism.

Read:Ghanaian arrested in the United States for mobile phone fraud

The men were captured in Pakistan in 2002-2003 and moved to Guantanamo Bay prison after spending years in clandestine CIA detention facilities where they were tortured.

The CIA subjected Mohammed to waterboarding 183 times in 2003, which former US President George W Bush later said he personally authorised. Mohammed’s lawyers have argued that discussion of his torture is necessary for a free trial.

Karen Greenberg, director of the Center of National Security, said the suspects’ torture and their mental health conditions would be major factors in the trial considering they face the death penalty if convicted.

“What lies at the heart of this case is is it possible to bring this case with clean evidence – evidence that was not derived from torture,” Greenberg told Al Jazeera.

Some have questioned whether the trial will actually go forward as defence lawyers have said they will attempt to halt the proceedings, according to the Times.

“For a January 2021 trial date to happen, the government would have to drop its obstructionism and produce a lot of important evidence and witnesses,” James G Connell III, Baluchi’s lead defence counsel, was quoted as saying.

  • Amazon fires: The tragic couple who died protecting their home

The home of Eidi Rodrigues and her husband Romildo – a wooden shack with a thatched roof – now lies in ruins.

It was their first house, and it made them proud.

The couple lived in Machadinho D’Oeste, a rural village in the Amazon state of Rondonia in north-west Brazil.

It is a region marred by land disputes, and among communities in Machadinho D’Oeste, it is common practice to clear land for pastures and crops.

Fires had been a constant concern for the couple, who feared that those started by their neighbours could spread to their backyard, especially during periods of drought.

On 13 August, Eidi and Romildo’s worst fears were realised.

The couple died while trying to protect their home, unable to escape when the flames got out of control.

“People use fire to clear the land in this region, but on that day it was very windy. The fire spread too quickly and didn’t give them time to run away,” Jeigislaine Carvalho, one of Eidi’s daughters, told the BBC.

What is happening in the Amazon?

A large number of fires are ravaging parts of the Amazon, a tropical rainforest that spans much of Brazil and other South American countries.

Satellite data shows a huge increase in fires burning in the Brazilian Amazon in particular.

Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) says 87,257 fires have been recorded so far in the country this year, a 76% increase on 2018.

In Rondonia state alone, there have been more than 6,500 fires so far, a rise of 146% on 2018, Inpe data show.

Read:Amazon wildfires: Brazil and France clash over burning rainforest

The extent of the fires has caused concern and outrage across the globe, with world leaders calling on Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro to take action.

French President Emmanuel Macron has described the steep rise in fires as an “international crisis” which critics have blamed on Mr Bolsonaro’s anti-environmental rhetoric and soft stance on deforestation violations.

An aid package worth $22m (£18m), offered by countries in the G7, has been rejected by Brazil’s government.

Brazilian ministers said the money was not needed and they accused foreign powers of wanting control of the Amazon.

Eidi and Romildo saved their earnings for more than 10 years to purchase the land where they built their house. Neighbours told the police the couple had avoided leaving their property, even during intense fires.

Like many other farmers in the region, they used firebreaks – gaps in vegetation which act as barriers to stop or at least to slow down the progress of wildfires.

“People do whatever they can to avoid losing the very little they own,” detective Celso Kondageski said.

The rural village where Eidi and Romildo lived is located 350km (217 miles) south of Rondonia’s capital, Porto Velho. It is a deforested part of the state, which means fires travel faster.

On 13 August, locals shared videos showing huge flames engulfing the area. Jeigislaine, Eidi’s daughter, said her mother and stepfather had tried to save the roof tiles they had recently purchased for home renovations.

“The neighbours told me that they were taking the material to a more remote area so that it would not burn,” she said.

Fire was approaching the back of the property, which gave Eidi and Romildo an escape route from the front of the house, witnesses told the police.

But suddenly they were cornered by another fire coming from the front.

According to local reports, the fires in Machadinho D’Oeste consumed an area spanning more than 106 acres (0.42 sq km).

Eidi and Ronildo’s house was destroyed along with two other properties.

One witness told the BBC that, fearful of receiving a fine for deforestation, people were reluctant to summon the fire brigade when the flames started getting out of control.

“The fire only stopped after it destroyed all the vegetation around. It was very strong and I guess even the firefighters would have struggled to control it,” said the witness, who asked to remain anonymous.

It was only on 14 August – a day after the flames ripped through Eidi and Ronildo’s house – that the fire service turned up. They found the charred bodies of Eidi and Romildo around 100m (328ft) away from where their house once stood.

The police believe they died of carbon monoxide inhalation. Eidi and Romildo were the only fatalities.

The other neighbours managed to escape, and one of the homes wrecked by the flames was empty that day.

Police are trying to determine how the fire started.

“The fire is an environmental crime. People responsible for it could also be charged with manslaughter,” detective Celso Kondagesk said.

“Someone who starts a fire in an area like that should be aware that it can kill someone.”

Eidi’s daughter says she wants justice. “This is irresponsible and it killed two people. Whoever did this has to pay,” she said.

  • Bimbila conflict: ‘I pray God gives me wisdom to succeed’ – Togbe Sri

The Awomefia of the Anlo State, Torgbui Sri III, is praying for wisdom from above, to deliver the task of finding lasting peace in Bimbila in the Northern region.

The Anlo chief was commissioned Thursday, by President Akufo-Addo, to mediate in the Bimbila chieftaincy dispute.

Other members of the mediation committee are Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Joseph Kofi Dzamesi and the Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed.

The President announced the intervention for peace during his last tour of the Volta region.

The Bimbila conflict is reported to have erupted in 2001 following a misunderstanding in the selection of a successor for the late Bimbilla Naa, Abarika Attah II.

This development disrupted peace and impeded security in the area for over 18 years, though several attempts have been made to restore peace.

Bimbilla continues to endure curfews due to bloody disagreements despite a court verdict in May 2018, declaring one of the factions, the Dasana family as rightful heirs to the skin.

The Naa Dawuni family was dissatisfied with ruling and has been calling for a committee to mediate.

Government following the request, appointed the Awomefia of the Anlo State, Torgbui Sri III who has a background in conflict resolution, peace-building and security, to mediate and bring peace to the area.

Accepting the responsibility placed on his shoulders, Togbe Sri, a renowned conflict resolution expert promised to employ both expertise and “the wisdom of God” to resolve the matter.

“I am not surprised the President appointed me, because this is what I studied and do. I have done this in Namibia, Cambodia and South Africa. I was flown from South Africa to mediate in the Tamale conflict, which I did to expectations. I pray God gives me the wisdom to mediate the Bimbila conflict,” he said.

The Northern Regional Minister Salifu Saeed bemoaned the adverse effect the conflict had caused the Bimbila area but said the state has confidence in Torgbui Sri to help bring lasting peace to the area.

The Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, presented the appointment letter to Torgbui Sri on behalf of the president.

The National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah and the Volta Regional Minister, Archibald Letsa, Volta Regional NPP Chairman, Makafui Woanyah and others were part of the delegation.

  • Burning Man: Death at US festival treated as suspicious

The death of a man at the Burning Man festival in the US state of Nevada is being treated as suspicious, authorities say.

Shane Billingham, 33, was found unresponsive in his car at around 18:30 local time (00:30 GMT) on Thursday.

Mr Billingham, a New Zealand national, had “poisonous” levels of carbon monoxide in his blood, police said.

Bystanders reportedly attempted CPR on Mr Billingham before paramedics arrived.

He was taken to a medical tent, where he was later pronounced dead.

Pershing County Sheriff’s Office said it was investigating the death as suspicious.

A post-mortem examination found Mr Billingham had “a concentration of carbon monoxide in his blood which would be considered poisonous to human life”.

“Preliminary toxicology showed the presence of controlled substances to be an exacerbating factor,” the Washoe County medical examiner’s office said in a statement.

A makeshift memorial for Mr Billingham has been set up at Beats Boutique, the camp where he was staying at the festival.

One of Mr Billingham’s friends, Steve MacWithey, told the Reno Gazette Journal he was “one of the best people I’ve ever known”.
