  • DJ Arafat: Thousands pay tribute at Abidjan concert

Thousands of fans have gathered in Ivory Coast’s capital Abidjan to pay tribute to musician DJ Arafat.

The 33 year old Ivorian, whose real name was Ange Didier Huon, died in a motorcycle accident earlier this month.

Hundreds of Ivorian artists took part in a stadium concert, with President Alassane Ouattara among its attendees.

Huon’s coffin is due to be brought to the stadium and carried away later to a local cemetery for burial.

The ceremony was organised after a successful online petition which called on the government to allow the use of Félix Houphouët Boigny stadium, which seats 35,000 people.

The government also pledged $250,000 towards the event and thousands of security personnel were deployed to manage crowds.

DJ Arafat has been referred to as the “king” of coupé-décalé (cut and run), an Ivorian form of dance music.

The musical genre was born in the early 2000s during Ivory Coast’s civil war and emphasised that young people still wanted to have fun despite the conflict.

DJ Arafat came to symbolise the flashy well-dressed lifestyle associated with the music, which features fast percussion, deep bass and hip-hop-style vocals.

The singer was also known for his love of motorcycles and featured them in his most recent hit, Moto Moto, released in May, which has had more than five million YouTube views.

Read:DJ Arafat burial scheduled for 30th, 31st August

He released more than 10 studio albums over his 15-year career, and was named best artist of the year at the Coupé-Decalé Awards in 2016 and 2017.

Off stage, DJ Arafat was known for controversy, having faced accusations of domestic abuse.

The music star also regularly lashed out at other artists on social media.

“The clashes started because I wanted to show I was number one on the Ivorian music scene,” Huon told Jeune Afrique magazine last year.

“Above all it helped me to invent new sounds, I needed competition to find inspiration. When the music scene is sleeping, you have to wake it up”.

  • Ronaldo invites Messi to dinner at UEFA Awards

Football draws and awards nights can often be dreary affairs, full of stilted speeches and goal montages.
But when you get two of the greatest players ever – Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – agreeing to break bread over dinner and a philosophical monologue from Eric Cantona, it turns into an entirely different occasion.

There were clear pangs of absence making the heart grow fonder between Juventus forward Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Messi as they shared jokes and laughs sat next to each other.

It was almost difficult to imagine that the two were such great rivals during Ronaldo’s nine years at Real Madrid and in the last decade of Ballon d’Or voting for the world’s greatest player.

“We have shared the stage 15 years. I don’t know if that’s happened before – the same two guys on the same stage all the time,” Ronaldo said.

Read:Ronaldo fined by Uefa over goal celebration

“Of course, we have a good relationship. We haven’t had dinner together yet, but I hope in the future.

“We had that battle in Spain. I pushed him and he pushed me as well. So it’s good to be part of the history of football.”

With touching shows of affection like this, who would dare suggest that the pair do not get on?

If that impromptu display of nostalgia wasn’t enough, Cantona’s musings were something else.

The former Manchester Untied and France striker was speaking before the 2019-20 Champions League draw in Monaco, when he was given the Uefa president’s award.

Read:Messi scores 50th hat-trick in Bercelona win over Sevilla

Dressed in a flat cap and a red shirt, he began by quoting Shakespeare’s King Lear, saying “as flies to wanton boys we are for the gods” before continuing to reference science, war and crime.

The audience, packed with football superstars, watched in stunned silence before sharing puzzled glances as Cantona made his way from the stage before Lucy Bronze and Virgil van Dijk were later named Uefa’s players of the year.

Cantona isn’t new to philosophical outpourings. In the aftermath of his kung-fu kick on a Crystal Palace fan in 1995, he gave his infamous press conference observation that “when the seagulls follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea”.

Eric Cantona took up acting since retiring from football in 1997

    Cantona’s bizarre speech in full

“As flies to wanton boys we are for the gods, they kill us for their sport.

“Soon the science will not only be able to slow down the ageing of the cells, soon the science will fix the cells to the state and so we will become eternal.

“Only accidents, crimes, wars, will still kill us but unfortunately, crimes, wars, will multiply.

    “I love football. Thank you.”

  • Nigerian women in Ghana exploited by smugglers, madams, ‘priests’

Kumasi, Ghana – Jennifer* has spent the last few weeks on the pavements of Vienna City, a hub in Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city, which has a bustling nightlife.

She arrived in Ghana in May, having left a crowded hostel room in Lagos, Nigeria, hoping to secure work in sales or as a waitress and send her income to her mother in central Nigeria’s Ondo State.

But after a one-day bus trip from Lagos to Accra, her dreams crumbled as she reached the green hills of Kumasi.

“Please, get me out of here, this life is devastating,” she said.

“They put me immediately on the street, forcing me to prostitute from 8pm till morning, every day,” she said in a bar on Harper Road, where Rihanna’s songs crackled through an old sound system as other Nigerian women outside dressed in revealing clothes waited for clients.

Read: Another Nigerian suspected kidnapper arrested

“Each night, I receive up to eight clients, and end up having $20 to $25 in my hands,” she said.

Most of her money goes back into the “system” – to a “madam”, a Nigerian woman, and middlemen such as hotel managers.

Ads to recruit ‘sales girls’ in the Zongo Junction district, home to several connection houses and brothels [Francesco Bellina/Al Jazeera]

Women and girls like Jennifer, with some as young as 14, are victims of a trafficking network that benefits several people from Nigeria to Ghana.

The old district of Dichemso, the heart of the business, lies on the opposite side of Kumasi’s city centre.

“Dichemso is where Kumasi’s sex industry is flourishing, thanks to different guesthouses and hotels, such as the Plaza,” said Bright Owusu, an independent researcher who has spent the last three years meeting Nigerian women forced into prostitution in the city.

Twenty Nigerian women live at one of these guesthouses, which is controlled by a few men at the entrance.

Locked in her room, 26-year-old Blessing* shared her experience.

“I am the oldest of five sisters and brothers: when our parents died, I knew I had to take care of them,” she said.

Local middlemen convinced her to leave Lokoja, in central Nigeria, to Ghana.

In Kumasi, “they introduced me to a woman, who brought me to a fetish priest and told me I owed her 8,000 cedis [about $1,500] for my transportation: I had to prostitute to pay that sum back”.

A woman undergoes a ‘liberating’ ritual during a religious ceremony at a pentecostal church in Kumasi, Ghana [Francesco Bellina/Al Jazeera]

In some African countries, a “fetish priest” serves as a mediator between the spirit and the living.

    Blessing refused, and ran away.

Soon after, she received death threats in messages to her phone. “The madam said the priest would throw a curse against me, but I didn’t want any debt,” she said.

After working for four months at a local market, for barely $30 a month, Blessing ultimately turned to prostitution as the only way to pay college fees for her younger sisters.

“I don’t like it here, but I have to resist,” she said.

In one year in Dichemso, she said she has met dozens of women with similar experiences.

“Every day, Nigerian girls enter Ghana, undergo voodoo rituals and are put into prostitution, and nobody seems to care,” she said.

“Through rituals, madams make sure that you’ll pay back a debt,” said Blessing.

Debts vary between $1,000 and $2,000, while prices “are as low as 5 cedis [$1] for a short [sexual encounter] – less than 10 minutes with the client – and up to 30 cedis for half an hour or more”, she added.

    Nigerian prostitution in Ghana

Nana Badu, a ‘prophetess’ works also with ‘madams’ who smuggle Nigerian girls to Ghana [Francesco Bellina/Al Jazeera]

Owusu, the researcher, explained: “Some of these women know they’ll be coming for prostitution, but they don’t know that once here, they’ll lose control over their life.”

Voodoo rituals play a central role.

“They are the most powerful bond, one that has a strong psychological impact,” he said.

Victoria Klimova, a project coordinator at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Ghana, said that national authorities do not have complete information on sex trafficking.

However, according to Al Jazeera’s interviews and research, it is estimated that there are at least hundreds of Nigerian women working as prostitutes in Ghana.

Late last year, IOM launched a programme aimed at creating comprehensive data on sex trafficking and labour exploitation in Ghana, and to support the government’s 2017 strategy to combat the problem.

According to the US Department of State, a trafficking investigation which opened last year has seen just three people convicted.

Out of 49 women identified as potential victims of sex trafficking, 46 were Nigerian, and 22 were underage.

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), a state agency, in part supported this investigation.

Alberta Ampofo leads its anti-smuggling operation, which is propped up with European Union funds.

She said some “rescued women” are living at Ghana’s first shelter for trafficking victims, which opened in February.

“They should cooperate in investigations, before being returned to their families,” she said.

“Victims of sex trafficking are in all corners of Ghana and much has yet to be done, but there’s more awareness among the population and authorities, and that’s a good start.”

But Ampofo said that GIS is not prosecuting fetish priests.

“How can a priest know that a Nigerian lady is a victim of trafficking, if the madam simply presents her as an employee?”

However, this is not the case of Nana Badu, a renowned prophetess in Kumasi.

In a small room in her house, there are wooden statues of oracles, bowls and bottles.

Her oracles, she said, “can give strength, bring children, make business flourish or protect from enemies”.

She added that madams “come for protection so that the police won’t stop their girls at the border, since I have a medicine that prevents police from seeing you”.

To “help” trafficked women pay back their debts, she claimed that she is able to foster “bonds” between sex workers and employers.

“If a woman tries to escape, the oracle will put the police on her back, to arrest her,” said Badu.

Read: Canadian girls kidnappers: four granted GHC800,000 bail

Finally, when the debt is repaid, the madam returns with the sex worker and Badu reverses a ritual to release the victim.

None of the five women Al Jazeera interviewed in Kumasi, who hailed from different Nigerian states, was aware of a 2018 edict that dissolved all these oaths, led by the influential Oba, or traditional chief, of Benin City – one of the main origins of Nigerian women trafficked to Europe.

“Traditional priests feel they are somehow untouchable here, even by authorities,” said Owusu.

Still, their services appear to play a key role in a system that exposes Nigerian women in Ghana to daily risks, as tragically confirmed in May with the murder of a 25-year-old woman known as Nina.

“I remember her receiving a call from a client and smiling,” said Blessing, who knew Nina well.

Days later, the woman’s body was found outside of Kumasi. Two men were arrested for the murder.

“We collected money for the burial and called her parents back in Nigeria,” said Blessing. “They had no idea of what their daughter was going through here.”

  • AfCFTA is game-changer for Africa’s socio-economic development – ECA

Dr Joseph Atta-Mensah, Principal Policy Advisor, Macroeconomics and Governance Division, Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has described the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTFA) agreement as the game-changer for Africa’s socio-economic development.

The AfCFTA, which is headquartered in Accra provides the opportunity for Africa to create the world’s largest free trade area, with the potential to unite 1.3 billion people, in a $2.5 trillion economic bloc and usher in a new era of development.

Read: AfCTFA: Hope for African free trade

Speaking during a media engagement in Accra, Dr Atta-Mensah noted that AfCFTA would be a game-changer for Africa, if it would be inclusive enough.

Dr Atta-Mensah, who said he was optimistic that the AfCFTA would be a game-changer, also commended the enthusiasm African leaders exhibited towards its formation; right from March 2018 in Kigali and by July 2019 it was operational and that it was going to take full effect by July 2020.

He said trade was a strategy for development and therefore, if African countries trade among themselves, it would lead to the transformation of their economies.

He urged African countries to add value to their products before exporting them; citing that Ghana should be able to produce enough chocolate and cocoa butter for the export market.

Dr Atta-Mensah said the AfCFTA was expected to boost intra-African trade by 52 per cent.

He said the positive potential of AfCFTA towards boosting intra-Africa trade would be achieved if African countries eliminated illicit financial flows (IFFs).

“Study that has been done in ECA and others, shows Africa at the minimum loses about $50 billion every year (through IFFs). Now this $50 billion is the minimum, it could be more. Some studies even put at $150 billion dollars a year,” he stated.

“The question is that our infrastructure needs for Africa is about $100 billion a year in order to bring out infrastructure to world class stage. We need money for our educational system. If we can unplug all this IFFs we can Chanel all this money into our development.”

With regards to skills development on the continent, Dr Atta-Mensah urged African countries to invest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, which according to him would go a long way to support trade and development.

He said the ECA was committed to promoting the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa’s development.

Dr David Luke, Coordinator, African Trade Policy Centre, ECA, who congratulated Ghana for being selected to host the AfCFTA Secretariat, also noted that “effectively, Ghana is going to be the commercial capital of Africa”.

He said AfCFTA Secretariat being located in Accra, would attract a number of activities relating to the agreement.

Dr Luke said a lot of efforts had gone into the AfCFTA agreement to ensure that it succeeded.

The ECA team was in Accra to attend a High-Level Conference on the AfCFTA, organised jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, in collaboration with the ECA and the African Union Commission (AUC).

The three-day conference is focused on Ghana harnessing the benefits of the AfCFTA for the “Ghana Beyond Aid” agenda.

  • Our senior management is full of old people, yet, they are supposed to think for the next generation-Dr. Tengey, BoG

The Head of Personnel Development, Bank of Ghana, has called for the need to have fresh minds (young people) at the management level of the financial institutions, who can easily adapt to the rapid change in the banking sector.

He said what the system needs is a group of individuals who will be  responsible for running institutions such as boards, top management and senior management, along with the regulators of these establishments who are able to keep the pace with digitization trends.

According to him, there is the need for people to adapt to the change in order to keep up the pace and survive. He added, the only way forward is planning for the future to survive drastic change.

“So if you want to realize growth, you need to grow the leadership and the capacity of the leadership, otherwise, you need to change the leadership altogether or there can be no growth,” he noted.

Read: Irresponsible Bank of Ghana caused banking crisis Akufo-Addo

“In our part of the world, where seniority seem to be wisdom, and old age seem to have all the solution, we need to take a second look and ask if the leadership is willing to grow and change,” he added.

He continued, “For most of us, our boards are full of old people who are trying to retire and some have retired. Our senior management are full of old people, some have retired, they are on contract and yet, they are supposed to think for the next generation.”

He noted, the youth who are “the voice of leadership from below” rather have ideas to bring about desired change but are not heard.

He said the digitization change would be saddled with challenges if our cultural orientation is not given a second look.

Dr. Tengey was speaking at the Digital Banking Summit held on the theme, “Digitization of banking Sector En Route to a  Cashless Africa.”

The event was organised by the International Centre for Strategic Alliances with sponsorship from Mastercard, with KPMG as Knowledge Partner and First Bank Nigeria as Official Banking Partner.

Dr Tengey observed, it is important to understand the current environment the banking sector operates, and with challenges inherited therein, called for a new set of leaders.

He reiterated, leadership prepares the organization for the future “And for me nothing happens without leadership, nothing changes without leadership, there is no progress without leadership, leadership sets the boundary to grow in any institution.”

He said company leaders are very important and should always have a responsibility mindset, look forward to long term orientation, strategic orientation and accountability.

He said such leaders must possess strong analytical and decision making skills.

There are tremendous risks and opportunities in businesses but it takes leaders to see them and save their entities from such dangers.

He said there is rapid change in the banking landscape, coupled with competition Telecommunication companies which calls for radical response from banks, by adapting to the change.

    Adding that some of them

“The business of banking is changing. What constitute banking in the minds of people is changing; the banking landscape itself is changing because a lot more organizations are entering into the banking landscape.”

Read: Bank of Ghana bans commissions on deposits

People anticipate safe convenient banking environments and want to spend less time to do banking, unlike some years back. As such, complacency could be their downfall since existing customers could easily gravitate towards any company that would make them feel safe, secured and convenient.

He said the move from physical to digital is not going to be overnight,  hence the need to combine both physical and digital (Phygital) to gradually get there.

He advised the banking sector to adopt a system of payment where customers could have access to their monies wherever, and not necessarily at the banking hall. He cited ATMs as an example.

He cautioned, unless leaders in the banking landscape are guided by current industry trends, they may lose their positions; citing companies such as Kodak, Nokia, and Sony Walkman as companies which failed because they refused to adapt.

Dr. Tengey during his concluding remarks, called for an appropriate leadership response to handle evolving trends and show willingness in embracing change.

  • GRA seizes unstamped products

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has seized carbonated drinks and alcoholic beverages that have not been affixed with excise tax stamps.

The products are mostly imported Coca-Cola, Red Bull, Canada Dry, Heineken, Red And Black Label and several others.

Kwaku Apau Anto, Head of Excise, GRA, told The Chronicle and other media personnel present at the Accra Business District area, that the GRA would continue to seize products that manufacturers and importers had failed to affixed stamps to.

Read: GIPC to review trade laws Yoofi Grant

He indicated that the inspection exercise was actually to educate the traders on how to authenticate the tax stamps on the products with the use of an App that was launched recently.

However, to his surprise, some traders still had wares that had not been affixed with the stamps.

He wondered why importers especially, are being recalcitrant to adhere to the law, meanwhile, the stamps play a double role of ensuring consumer safety, as well as protecting taxes for the state.

According to him, the team had visited those traders and wholesalers selling the unfixed stamps products several times to sensitise them on the importance of the tax stamps, but they failed to adhere to those notifications.

“We have been here before. We thought we are just coming to undertake some sensitisation for them, but we have come to meet some of the products without stamps,” he surprisingly said.

Read: Tax stamps being misapplied GRA

He continued that it was illegal for anyone to sell products such carbonated drinks, mineral water and alcoholic beverages with the stamps not affixed tax, hence, the GRA would not hesitate to seize such products.

To compound the problem, other seized items were improperly affixed, thus, they were either with a volume lower or higher than what the law required.

He added that the GRA would continue to educate the public on the importance of the tax stamps.

  • Two Ghanaian projects receive funding from Mastercard Foundation

Two entrepreneurial Ghanaian teams have emerged winners at the 2019 Social Venture Challenge (SVC) held in Kigali, Rwanda.

The two teams, which were part of 33 others from different countries who participated in the contest, were part of 15 teams selected as the winners of the SVC 2019.

Each team will receive seed funding to scale their projects in health, education, environment and plastic waste management and a lifetime membership to the Resolution Fellowship that will help them continue getting guidance and membership to grow their projects.

Read: Ghana imports 50,000 tonnes of palm oil

Organised by the Mastercard Foundation and the Resolution Project, the SVC provides a pathway to action for socially responsible young leaders who want to be change agents in their communities through their projects.

The winners are pursuing insightful projects in Senegal, Lebanon, Rwanda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Gambia, Malawi, Uganda and Cameroun.

    Ghana winners

One of the initiatives that won the challenge was Api-smart. It is a project to be initiated at Bebuso, a farming community located in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The project aims at creating employment to reduce poverty by providing training for the youth and other individuals in bee-keeping, as well as encouraging afforestation in the area.

The co-Founders of the initiative, Mr Elikplim Kwasi Avor and Mr Ransford Obeng Aniagyei, are recent graduates of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

In an interview on August 22, Mr Aniagyei said the appalling level of unemployment, poverty and indiscriminate felling of trees for charcoal burning by the indigenes of the community due to the unavailability of jobs in the area were some of the conditions that moved them to take this initiative.

He said training the youth in a more profitable venture would help equip the youth, as well as create jobs for over 100 youth and other individuals in the community.

The team, he said, received US$5,000 from the Mastercard Foundation and that would be used to kick-start the project.

“We are looking at training at least 10 people every year over the next five years to build a team of skilled youth who can also impact the lives of others,” he said.

He said after the training, the venture team would guide the beneficiaries in establishing bee farms (apiaries) by first planting trees such as cashew to serve as a source of nectar and pollen for honey production by the bees, thus encouraging afforestation in the area.

The team, he said, would strategically provide a ready market by entering into agreements with the beneficiaries to purchase their harvested honey, process it, package and supply it to an established network of wholesalers, retailers and individuals across the country.

The second initiative known as Duafe aims to close the gender gap in technology by teaching programming skills to young girls in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. It will run Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workshops, boot camps and mentoring programmes in schools and also provide access to career opportunities.

    Mastercard committed

The Senior Manager, Youth Engagement and Networks, Mastercard Foundation, Ms Ashley Collier, in an interview said the Mastercard Foundation partnered the Resolution Project four years ago to enable them to reach out to young people and provide the needed support to help impact the continent.

She described the 2019 SVC as the most exciting one as it received a lot of entries from the Mastercard scholars and also had more teams emerging winners.

“We have scholars engaged in impactful ventures in environment and plastic waste management, educational challenges, health and others,” she added.

The Mastercard Foundation, she explained, would continue to explore projects and programmes that would create more opportunities for the youth on the continent.

  • Amazon wildfires: Brazil and France clash over burning rainforest

Brazil’s president has accused France and other countries of interfering and having a “colonialist mindset” as they express fears for the burning Amazon rainforest.

The number of forest fires in Brazil since January – more than 74,000 – has increased by 83% compared with the same period last year, with smoke that is visible from 400 miles up in space.

World leaders are increasingly worried about the situation, as the Amazon – described as the world’s lungs – is a vital absorber of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the fires are an “international crisis”, writing on Twitter: “Our house is burning. Literally.

“The Amazon rainforest – the lungs which produce 20% of our planet’s oxygen – is on fire”.

But Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro hit back, saying: “I regret that Macron seeks to make personal political gains in an internal matter for Brazil and other Amazonian countries. The sensationalist tone he used does nothing to solve the problem.”

Read:Amazon fires: Record number burning in Brazil rainforest space agency

In a second tweet, he said: “The French president’s suggestion that Amazonian matters be discussed at the G7 without the involvement of countries of the region recalls the colonialist mindset that is unacceptable in the 21st century.”

Mr Bolsonaro also claimed news organisations had exploited the fires to undermine his government, saying: “Most of the media wants Brazil to end up like Venezuela.”

Kumi Naidoo, Amnesty International’s secretary-general, said: “Instead of spreading outrageous lies or denying the scale of deforestation taking place, we urge the president to take immediate action to halt the progress of these fires.”

The Bishops Conference for Latin America described the fires as a “tragedy”, saying: “We urge the governments of the Amazon countries, especially Brazil and Bolivia, the United Nations and the international community to take serious measures to save the world’s lungs.”

But Filipe Martins, an adviser to Mr Bolsonaro, said the Amazon would be saved by Brazil and not “the empty, hysterical and misleading rhetoric of the mainstream media, transnational bureaucrats and NGOs”.

Read:Brazil jail riot leaves more than 50 dead

Fires in the rainforest at this time of year are not unusual, but environmentalists blame the increase on farmers deliberately setting fires to clear land for agriculture.

On Thursday, Mr Bolsonaro admitted this could be the case – a day after he had blamed environmental groups for setting the fires.

Just eight months into his presidency, the right-wing president has made it clear he wants to open the Amazon up to the demands of mining, agricultural and logging companies.

Federal prosecutors are investigating a Brazilian newspaper advert calling on farmers to be part of Fire Day and burn parts of the forest to show the president “their willingness to work”.

This month, Norway and Germany stopped funding anti-deforestation projects in Brazil, worried by changes to how the projects were being chosen under Mr Bolsonaro.

At the time the president said his country “does not need” the funding.
