There was chaos at Nungua Kantamanto on Monday evening when a truck carrying a container veered off the road and crashed into a parked Toyota SUV and some motorcycles.

  • Kwesi Appiah to stay as Black Stars coach

Black Stars coach, James Kwasi Appiah, is expected to remain in charge of the senior national team despite Ghana’s second round exit from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

According to Graphic Sports investigations, Coach Appiah still has a running contract which will expire in December.

This follows the recent extension of his contract by the Normalisation Committee of the Ghana Football Association prior to the AFCON.

Read: AFCON 2019: I feel sad about our exit Kwesi Appiah admits

Originally, the two-year contract handed to the Stars coach by the Kwesi Nyantakyi administration two years ago was supposed to expire at the end of 2019 AFCON. However, the shifting of the tournament from January- February to June-July by CAF necessitated a contract extension to enable Coach Appiah to lead the Stars to Egypt.

While many Ghanaians thought the coach’s contract would end with the AFCON, it is now obvious that the former Ghanaian international will keep his job, at least, for the next six months.

The source that revealed this to Graphic Sports in an exclusive interview last Saturday indicated that any decision by the government to abrogate the contract now would not be prudent due to the cost involved.

The source, however, said that contrary to agitations by some Ghanaians for the coach’s removal, any such decision might also not be fair to the coach since the Stars did not perform badly in Egypt.

It said though the team could not win the trophy as expected, they performed creditably against some formidable opposition.

According to the source, the Stars were held to a 2-2 draw by Benin who made it to the quarter-finals, drew goalless with defending champions Cameroun and beat Guinea-Bissau to top their group.

The source said in the second round match against Tunisia, the Ghanaians fought gallantly from a goal down and went on to dominate the extra time and could even have won the game but for hard luck.

Read: Sack Kwesi Appiah Ghanaians react to AFCON exit

The source said it would, therefore, be unfair for the coach to be given the sack simply because the Stars lost on penalties to Tunisia since penalties were a lottery which could go to either side.

The source disclosed further that for now, the head of the Stars technical team and the other major actors in Ghana’s campaign had been asked to submit their reports to enable the GFA to ascertain what actually went wrong.

That, it explained, would go a long way to determine the next line of action to be taken by the GFA in the coming days.

As part of the qualification procedures, prospective aspirants have been referred to the 1992 constituency for further clarifications on their eligibility.Normal procedural errors would not form a basis for disqualification of any candidate, however, defrauding by false pretense and impersonation will invalidate the candidature of potential candidates.

The duo failed to pick nomination forms at the close of nominations. Speculations are rife that, Mr.Alban Bagbin,Ghana’s longest serving MP took the decision not to rerun the election after the youth of the constituency pressed on him to give way for a new and young face to take over.

  • India delays moon launch an hour before liftoff

India on Monday postponed the launch of a lunar probe less than an hour before blast-off because of a technical problem, delaying its bid to become only the fourth nation to land a spacecraft on the Moon.

The Chandrayaan-2 or Moon Chariot 2 mission is part of India’s ambitious space programme, and its success would have propelled the South Asian nation into rarefied company: Russia, the United States and China are the only countries to have landed craft on the lunar surface.

The spacecraft looked set for launch atop a Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mk III India’s most powerful rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, but countdown was halted 56 minutes and 24 seconds before the planned liftoff at 2:51 am (2121 GMT Sunday).

“A technical snag was observed in launch vehicle system at one hour before the launch,” the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said.

“As a measure of abundant precaution Chandrayaan-2 launch has been called off for today. Revised launch date will be announced later.”

    Read:India prepares for moon landing

The agency did not say when it would attempt the launch again, and did not share any details about the technical issue.

The spacecraft’s Moon landing had originally been scheduled for September 6.

Scores of enthusiasts, including schoolchildren, had gathered to witness the launch.

“We do not know what happened… We are disappointed. I hope they rectify whatever the issue is,” one of the spectators was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.

    Low-cost missions

India has spent about $140 million on Chandrayaan-2 designing and building almost all of its components domestically and hailed the mission as one of the cheapest ever.

A soft landing on the Moon would be a huge leap forward in India’s space programme.

National pride is at stake as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to launch a crewed space mission by 2022.

It follows another high-profile but low-cost Indian mission Mangalyaan which put a spacecraft in orbit around Mars in 2014 at a fraction of the cost of comparable projects by established space powers like the United States, which often cost billions of dollars.

Chandrayaan-2 will follow Chang’e-4, launched by India’s regional rival China, which in January became the first spacecraft to successfully land on the far side of the Moon.

The Indian mission will involve a 2.4-tonne (5,300-pound) orbiter that will circle the Moon for about a year, imaging and studying the surface including a search for water and will also examine the lunar atmosphere.

Read:Three arrested for possessing Indian hemp

A 1.4-tonne lander Vikram named after Vikram A. Sarabhai, the father of India’s space programme will head to the lunar south pole.

It will carry with it a solar-powered rover named Pragyan “wisdom” in Sanskrit which will roam as far as 500 metres away from the lander to study the composition of the Moon’s surface for one lunar day the equivalent of 14 Earth days.

India’s first lunar mission Chandrayaan-1 in 2008 did not land on the Moon, but orbited the Moon searching for water using radar.

New Delhi also has ambitions to land a probe on Mars, following the success of the Mangalyaan orbiter.

Lunar exploration has been in focus in recent months with the looming 50th anniversary of the first human landing on the Moon, and US President Donald Trump giving NASA a 2024 deadline to return astronauts to the lunar surface.

The Deputy Minister for Energy, Mohammed Amin Adam, in an address on behalf of the Energy Minister, Peter Amewu, has announced that his ministry, in collaboration with National Security, has initiated a process that will ensure the implementation of a policy aimed at safeguarding the country’s petroleum installations, against all forms of attacks.

While in partnership with the national security secretariat, both entities will work towards implementing an energy security policy aimed at protecting critical infrastructure and the sustainability of the petroleum industry.

    A similar plan in 2009
Meanwhile in November 2009, then minister of Energy under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, Dr Joe Oteng-Adjei, announced the constitution of a high-level committee of security and legal experts to draft a policy document aimed to safeguard operations in the oil and gas sector.

In an address read for him at a workshop on a framework to extend the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) to the Oil and Gas Sector, Dr Oteng-Adjei said the security policy document will create a safe, secure and enabling environment to facilitate the exploration, exploitation and distribution of oil and gas.

Read: Energy debts: Expert backs call to rationalise PPAs

He was quoted as saying, “More specifically, the policy will protect the petroleum industry against acts of terrorism, sabotage, piracy and vandalism.” The policy was primarily aimed at preventing the diversion and stealing of petroleum products, prevent other users of the sea from interfering with operations, maintain general law and order and render timely response to emergencies in the oil and gas sector.

Today, in light of global energy security concerns, protecting offshore oil and gas installations from external or internal threat(s) is an essential and obligatory exercise for countries with significant offshore oil and gas operations; especially for those countries whose economic well-being depends on it.

In order to plan fitting security strategies, we must understand the types of threats faced by offshore installations, including knowledge of various threat groups and the dangers they represent. If the country can refer to past attacks (if any) and interferences with installations and possible future actions, then Ghana could be making a headway in that regard.

Their clash with Algeria on Sunday night looked to be headed for extra time (after a penalty from Odion Ighalo had cancelled out an own goal from William Troost-Ekong), but deep in injury time Riyad Mahrez sent a beautifully-struck free-kick beyond the right hand of goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi to condemn the Super Eagles to this consolation midweek clash.

    Read:Senegal, Algeria for AFCON final

Tunisia, meanwhile, saw their game against Senegal go the full 120 minutes, but in the end an own goal from defender Dylan Bronn denied them a place in the final. The Carthage Eagles have had an up-and-down ride through this Afcon, but finishing in the top four is their best Nations Cup performance since winning the title in 2004.

Both coaches Gernot Rohr for Nigeria and Alain Giresse for Tunisia are likely to shuffle their packs and give playing time to the fringe members of the squad. The Super Eagles will likely also ensure that veteran John Obi Mikel gets some time on the field to bid farewell, with the former Chelsea midfielder saying last week that this Afcon is highly likely to be his last tournament in the green and white of Nigeria.

In head-to-head terms, Nigeria and Tunisia have met in 18 previous matches. The Carthage Eagles have claimed six wins compared to five for the Super Eagles, while seven games have been drawn.

In fact, the teams have drawn their last five games in succession, the most recent of which ended 1-1 in a group stage match at the 2016 African Nations Championship (Chan) in Rwanda. Their most recent Afcon clash was in the quarterfinals of the 2006 edition (which fittingly was also in Egypt): the match ended 1-1 before the West Africans triumphed on penalties.

  • Most rural banks are well capitalized – ARB Apex Bank MD

The Managing Director of the ARB Apex Bank, Kojo Mattah has maintained that most of the rural and community banks operating in the country are well capitalized and serving their clients, contrary to reports that majority of them are struggling.

He stated that the services rendered by rural banks are critical to the economic stability of the country.

Read: ARP Apex Bank urges customers to pay back loans

“I can tell you that most of the rural and community banks are well capitalized and operating very well” he said adding that there is no need for panic withdrawals.

According to him, over six million Ghanaians have different accounts with rural banks, making the industry a crucial one in closing the gap between the unbanked and banking population.

    Concept of rural banking

The rural and community banking concept was introduced in 1976 with a view to providing financial intermediation in rural areas.

Typically, there are about 140 rural and community banks in Ghana with over 700 branches spread across the 16 regions.

One important factor about rural and community banks is that they operate in areas universal banks may refuse to operate.

For now some stakeholders in the financial sector have called on the Bank of Ghana to conduct an audit of the sector and publish names of rural banks in good standing.

This may however take a while as the central bank prepares to move to the Savings and Loans sector as its next stop for cleaning the financial sector.

  • FDA, others organise blood donation

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Blood Bank of the Ho Teaching Hospital in conjunction with the Tsito Senior High School (SHS) has organized a blood donation exercise at Tsito, in the Ho West District of the Volta region.

A total of 89 units of blood out of 124 people screened, representing 59 per cent of the target set for the exercise was realised.

Read: Blood collected during voluntary drives are not used for rituals NBS

Mr Gorden Akurugu, Volta Regional Director of FDA said the blood donation exercise was part of its corporate social responsibility anchored on the entity’s rebranding efforts to bring FDA closer to the people.

He said FDA chose this exercise nationwide because the commodity could not be bought from an open market.

Mr Akurugu said with its new status of “Your well-being, Our Priority,” the Authority apart from keeping its mandate on regulation of drugs, it was contributing directly to the maintenance and development of other sectors of the country.

He entreated corporate institutions and other SHSs to emulate the example of Tsito SHS.

Mr Vincent K Fekpe, Volta Regional Blood Organiser said the blood bank continued to witness low stock and woefully boast of just 20-30 units of blood on the average, when ideally, a minimum standby of between 100-200 units was needed.

He said a monthly average of between 200-300 units for supplies to all hospitals in the region was not being met, let alone an actual demand of 400-500 units.

The Regional Blood Organizer said nine blood donation sections had been carried out between January-June, this year, most of it from SHSs, with an average of 58 units.

Mr Fekpe debunked the assertion that blood was for sale in hospitals but explained that any such charges were for services and urged Ghanaians to embrace blood donation culture to save lives in need of the commodity.

Ms Pearl Amedzake, Master Salawu Majid, all two-timer student donors of the Tsito SHS and a first-timer, Ms Edith Dogli, of the same School, said the exercise may look scary but practically easy to undergo stating their motive was to save lives.

Ms Getrude Akornor, a staff of FDA said apart from the initial needle prick pain at the fore-arm, there was nothing to fear about and pledged to continue to donate blood as long as her health would allow.

  • Rihanna’s Harper’s Bazaar China cover sparks questions of cultural appropriation

In one photo, Rihanna gazes down, a dainty Chinese fan in one hand and a bright red sash around her waist. In another, she poses in front of a traditional folding screen, the golden ornaments in her hair reminiscent of the royal fashions of ancient China.

These photos, posted by Harper’s Bazaar China on Tuesday, are set to appear on the cover and a feature of the magazine’s August issue. They were intended to show what happens “when western style icon meets eastern aesthetic,” the publication said on Instagram. But online reaction has been split.

Some social media users have heaped praise on the images, while others expressed concern about whether it’s acceptable for a non-Chinese person to adorn themselves with items from the country’s history and culture.

“She snapped but…isn’t….that…cultural appropriation?!?!” wrote one Twitter user, with “snapped” being a term for high praise. “Love Rihanna but we can’t accept everything she does cause it’s her,” wrote another. The debate on cultural appropriation — who can wear what, and under which circumstances — has existed for years, though it has become increasingly high-profile.

Just last month, Kim Kardashian West was accused of cultural appropriation after she launched a lingerie brand called Kimono — also the name of a centuries-old Japanese garment. Several other models and designers have been called out for cultural appropriation in recent years — Karlie Kloss for dressing like a Japanese geisha in the pages of Vogue, Gigi Hadid for being styled with an afro (also in Vogue) and Kylie Jenner for wearing cornrows.

Rihanna has previously come under fire herself — in October 2017, she was criticized for dressing like the ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti in a photo shoot for Vogue Arabia.

And yet, this time around, there is a contrast between audiences in mainland China, who have largely complimented the shoot, and audiences overseas, who seem more conflicted.

On the Chinese micro-blogging platform Weibo, the majority of comments about Harper’s Bazaar cover appeared positive. “No wonder she is the Queen of Shandong (province),” one user wrote, using a nickname Chinese fans have given Rihanna. “She is a foreigner that is most suitable to the Chinese style.” “It looks so good! Slay! The Chinese style compliments her so well,” another user wrote, while other Weibo comment threads are filled with heart emojis and exclamations of “wow” and “beautiful!”

On the other end of the spectrum — and the world — users on Instagram and Twitter, which are both blocked in China, were not as enthused. “If you wanted to create an Asian look why didn’t you invite Asian artists?” one Instagram user commented on Harper’s Bazaar’s post. “This is a total smack in the face to the Asian culture,” reads another comment. Some have pointed to the fact that the magazine is based in China, and can therefore be expected to reflect Chinese themes and styles. Others argue that it’s not the fashion, but the choice of Rihanna as a model, that makes the cover problematic.

It’s a debate we’ve seen play out countless times — so when does appreciation become appropriation? Is there a ‘right’ way? Cultural appropriation in fashion is as old as the industry itself, according to Tommy Tse, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Hong Kong.

“It has always been happening, but it has become more visible because of the rise of social and digital media,” Tse said in a phone interview, pointing to the use of Chinese motifs in 19th century Parisian and Italian fashion. “Everything is online, everyone can see it. So the idea has been magnified, there are more and more debates, and there are more conflicts about how aesthetic values can be appropriated in fashion.”

Ultimately, he said, there isn’t a singular “right” way to pay homage to another culture’s fashion — but there are things that help. For one, it’s important to take context into consideration. For example, when Rihanna attended the 2015 Met Gala, which was themed “China: Through the Looking Glass,” she wore a dramatic yellow dress with Chinese-style embroidery, by Chinese designer Guo Pei.

By going straight to the source and finding a Chinese designer, her supporters said she had honored the culture and people from which the aesthetic was borrowed.

Similarly, her new Harper’s Bazaar cover appears to have been produced by a largely Chinese team, including photographer Chen Man, who shot Rihanna’s first cover for the magazine back in 2015.

What — and who — will define beauty in the year 2050?

“It’s not just a top-down appropriation (or) a top-down adaptation,” said Tse. “It actually involved Chinese (people) — Chinese fashion industry workers who actually understand aesthetic and cultural traditions.”

The motivation for appropriation also matters, he added, using Kardashian West’s Kimono controversy as an example of “rude” appropriation. “She just wants to adopt the name and ignore the fact that the kimono has a whole history and represents cultural values in Japan,” Tse said. Recognition and acknowledgment are key, he said. Kardashian West’s lingerie line had “nothing to do with” the Japanese kimono — so adopting the name without reflecting the cultural source felt like staking claim to something that wasn’t hers.

Following the backlash, West said on Instagram that she had acted “with the best intentions in mind” and that her brands were “built with inclusivity and diversity at their core,” although she also announced she would be renaming the range.

Critics of cultural appropriation often argue that the act of representing another culture is inherently disrespectful — but the reality may be more nuanced, Tse said. “On the one hand, it enables people to claim their authenticity, but it also creates problems in essentializing what is Chinese and non-Chinese,” he said.

In other words: China’s culture and fashion is so varied, and exists in so many different forms, that making “Chinese fashion” an exclusive box flattens those pluralities. The idea of “ownership” is further complicated by diasporas and blurred geopolitical lines. For instance, are Chinese American designers entitled to create Chinese fashion, or will they be considered less “authentic” for not living in mainland China?

These gray areas are where exclusionary views of appropriation can become “problematic,” Tse said.

“Be appreciative,” he suggested. “Don’t just adopt the idea — acknowledge the idea was inspired by certain cultural values. People from that cultural context (are more likely) to think you appreciate that design — (that) you’re not copying (or) directly adopting — (if) you appreciate the values coming from the culture.”

  • ‘You cannot accept that we don’t fear you’ – AOC responds to Trump’s racist attacks

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday sharply criticized President Donald Trump for implying that she and other freshman House Democrats were not natural-born American citizens, saying the President is “angry because (he) can’t conceive of an America that includes us.”

In a series of tweets, Ocasio-Cortez took aim at Trump, who earlier Sunday wrote in a tirade on Twitter that she and other freshman House Democrats weren’t born in America and sarcastically suggested, “they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”

Read: US census 2020: Trump retreats on citizenship question

Although Trump’s tweets didn’t include the names of the congresswomen, he referenced the New York Democrat earlier last week when defending House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“You are angry because you can’t conceive of an America that includes us. You rely on a frightened America for your plunder,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, adding in another message that the country she “come(s) from” is the United States.

“But you know what’s the rub of it all, Mr. President? On top of not accepting an America that elected us, you cannot accept that we don’t fear you, either. You can’t accept that we will call your bluff & offer a positive vision for this country. And that’s what makes you seethe,” she wrote.

A group of Democrats, who are women of color and have been outspoken about Trump’s immigration policies, were among those who last week condemned the conditions of border detention facilities. Some also testified last week in front of a House Oversight and Reform committee hearing, explaining what they saw during their tour of the facilities housing migrants amid a border crisis.

Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts were among the group of House Democrats who recently condemned the conditions. Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib and Pressley are natural-born US citizens, while Omar was born in Somalia and immigrated to the US when she was young. Omar became a citizen in 2000 when she was 17 years old, according to the New York Times. Bernie Sanders: Nancy Pelosi shouldn’t ‘alienate’ freshmen House Democrats

Bernie Sanders: Nancy Pelosi shouldn’t ‘alienate’ freshmen House Democrats Following Trump’s Sunday attacks, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, defended the congresswomen and condemned him. “When ??@realDonaldTrump? tells four American Congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to “Make America Great Again” has always been about making America white again,” Pelosi tweeted. “Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power.”

Pelosi and this group of freshmen lawmakers have been embroiled in a dispute over the last couple weeks, although Pelosi called for unity recently among House Democrats.

  • Mahrez free-kick sends Algeria into AFCON final

Riyad Mahrez scored a stunning free-kick with virtually the last kick of the game as Algeria beat Nigeria to reach the Africa Cup of Nations final.

With the match heading for extra time, Manchester City forward Mahrez whipped a fierce set-piece into the top corner.

Read: Mahrez strikes as Algeria seal quarter-final spot

A William Troost-Ekong own goal had given Algeria the lead before Odion Ighalo’s penalty levelled the scores.

Algeria will face Senegal, who earlier beat Tunisia thanks to an extra-time own goal, in the final on Friday.

Algeria started brightly and came close on two occasions thanks to the dangerous Baghdad Bounedjah.

The striker first poked the ball past Kenneth Omeruo then shot straight at Daniel Akpeyi, before bursting through on goal only for Jamilu Collins to narrowly lift the ball over his own crossbar.

But Algeria took a deserved lead when Troost-Ekong turned Mahrez’s deflected cross into his own net from close range.

Nigeria equalised through Ighalo after Aissa Mandi was penalised, following a VAR review, for handling Peter Etebo’s shot.

That was just the second goal Algeria have conceded in the tournament, but they responded well, and Mahrez’s late strike kept alive their hopes of a second Afcon title.

  • FOCOS Hospital commissions largest Off-Grid Solar Powered Hospital in Africa

As part of its commitment to deliver premium orthopaedic healthcare in Ghana and beyond, The Foundation of Complex Orthopaedic Spine, FOCOS, has commissioned the largest Off-Grid Solar Powered Hospital Project (700kwp Hybrid Solar System with LMWH Battery Storage) in Africa.

The project, which is the first of its kind in the nation, estimated at over $1.5 million dollars, was made possible through the benevolence of USA couple Mr. and Mrs. Heylands, and Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, GNPC. Sun Power Innovations, the engineers behind the project, also gave a whopping $400,000 discount on the project.

Read: Engineer advocates promotion of solar panel roofing in Ghana

Representing the Deputy Minister for Energy, Mr. Wisdom Togobo, Director for Renewable Energy, lauded the efforts of all the donors/sponsors for this gesture. “It is the desire of government to install solar energy to the remote areas.

FOCOS Hospital by far consumes a lot more energy hence this philanthropic gesture is a good one.”

He encouraged the private sector to come in to augment the effort of the Ministry of Energy to provide rooftop solar power to needy areas and institutions. He reiterated the importance of solar not forgetting the huge costs normal electricity brings to bear on FOCOS power bills which pays a little over GHS100, 000 on power every month.

Expressing his excitement on the fruition of this project, Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, the President and Founder of FOCOS Hospital, appealed to the public to support FOCOS Hospital as it is a Non-Profit hospital taking care of patients who cannot afford spine, joint and bone-related surgery. He narrated how the funding of this project came into realization.

He emphasised the fact that a grateful patient in the US (Heylands) decided to give towards patient sponsorships and other hospital projects including this solar project.

“For us, this means more money for the patients as the power bills will be reduced by at least 60%.” He expressed his immense gratitude to the donors of this project.

He also used the occasion to appeal to all and sundry to support an endowment fund campaign aimed at raising $50million dollars to support needy patients and build capacity for research, education and outreach programs. Such a fund will be made possible if at least 500,000 Ghanaians will each contribute GHS100.00 to this fund for a 5year period.

Speaking on the plethora of benefits this installation will give FOCOS, Mr. Eric Adjah, Technical Lead for SunPower Innovation, said, “this is one of the first in the hospital sector which will help FOCOS Hospital cut down on its huge power bills and enjoy stable a 24 hour supply power, to the hospital, with the generator only serving as backup.”

Among the FOCOS Management members present at the ceremony were: Ambassordor Fritz Poku, Board Chairman of FOCOS Hospital, Dr.Joseph Ogyaadu, Medical Director, Dr. Ofori Amankwah, Director for Medical Services and Dr. Irene Wulff, Associate Medical Director. The newly crowned Miss Ghana Ms Rebecca Kwabi and her runner up were also in the audience.

  • NDC Reacts to new Afrobarometer report which gives Akufo-Addo high marks on fighting corruption

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has questioned the credibility of a report which ranked President Akufo-Addo high on the fight against corruption.

According to the 2019 Global Corruption Barometer, sixty percent of Ghanaians feel the Akufo-Addo administration is doing a good job of fighting corruption, a massive jump from four years ago, where only 25% of Ghanaians felt the government at the time was putting up a good fight against corruption.

Read: NDC places hold on parliamentary primaries in 37 constituencies

It further said thirty-three percent of Ghanaians said corruption has increased in the last 12 months while 36% say corruption has decreased in the last 12 months.

The report was launched by the Ghana Integrity Initiative on Thursday where it urged the government to adequately resource key anti-corruption institutions.

Speaking to this during a discussion on UTV, Abass Nurudeen, NDC Communication Director in the Ashanti Region thinks Akufo-Addo cannot score high on corruption because there are a lot of corrupt officials in his administration yet none has been prosecuted.

  • Pregnancy complications leading cause of death among girls’ – UN Chief

United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Antonio Guterres has said issues related to pregnancy were still the leading cause of death among girls aged 15 to 19.

“Around the world, we are seeing pushback on women’s rights, including on essential health services. Issues related to pregnancy are still the leading cause of death among girls aged 15 to 19.

Gender-based violence, which is rooted in inequality, continues to take a horrific toll,” the UN Chief said in his message on World Population Day observed on July 11.

Read: Elmina Zongo records no teenage pregnancy, child marriage

Speaking of the overall situation, the Secretary-General said that while the world’s population overall continues to increase, this growth is “uneven.”
“For many of the world’s least developed countries, the challenges to sustainable development are compounded by rapid population growth, as well as vulnerability to climate change.

    Sustainable development

“Other countries are facing the challenge of ageing populations,” he said.

Talking about the trend, Mr Guterres said “as the world continues to urbanise, with 68 per cent of the world population projected to live in urban areas by 2050, sustainable development and climate change will increasingly depend on the successful management of urban growth.”

Read: Pregnancy complications leading cause of death among girls aged 15-19 UN chief

World Population Day, which seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues, was established by the then-Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, an outgrowth of the interest generated by the Day of Five Billion, which was observed on July 11, 1987.

This year’s World Population Day calls for global attention to the unfinished business of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development.

Twenty-five years have passed since that landmark conference, where 179 governments recognised that reproductive health and gender equality are essential for achieving sustainable development.

  • Pavements choked: Drivers, mechanics take over

The parking of vehicles on streets and pavements has become a common sight in Accra, with its attendant unpleasant implications on commuter and pedestrian movements.

The practice also inhibits the mobility of many vulnerable people, including the aged and the physically challenged, especially the visually impaired.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Bye-law 2017 2 (a) on Obstruction in Public Pathway states that a person shall not park a vehicle, goods or other things in a public pathway or pavement.

Read: Employ Delta Force members to sell tickets at Lorry Stations Namoale

However, drivers and mechanics continue to flout the law with impunity.

While drivers take comfort in parking on the roads and pavements, auto mechanics also use the two public places as the extension of their workshops.

Depending on how long a mechanic will finish working on a faulty vehicle, the vehicle will be left on the pavement and the road.

Sometimes mechanics abandon the vehicles on the streets.

The practice puts the lives of people at risk, as pedestrians are forced to use the road as their walkway.

    Visit

It is an eyesore on streets such as the Brewery Link, the Brewery Loop, the Akuyea Addy Lane, the Angetebu Avenue, the Additrom Link and the Glover Road, all in Adabraka Official Town in Accra, as vehicles are parked on the pavements and the roads.

One dominant practice in the area is that anytime it is about to rain, people move their cars onto the pavements, so that floodwaters will not get into them.

Some of the vehicles look abandoned, with the owners having no intention of moving them away.

The Daily Graphic has also gathered that some of the car owners who flout the AMA bye-law at Adabraka are business owners who operate within the central business district (CBD) of Accra.

    Other areas

Other areas visited which have cars parked on pavements include the Okponglo stretch of the Madina-Legon road, the Atomic Junction, parts of the Graphic Road and streets close to the Madina Polyclinic.

The situation is worse at Abossey Okai, as majority of the pavements within the spare parts enclave are encroached upon by vehicles.

Streets such as the Oblogo Road, the Okaile Tetteh Street and parts of the Abossey Okai-Korle Bu stretch (Ping Ring Road West) are not left out of the mess.

    Lack of pavements

The Daily Graphic observed that most of the communities lacked pavements, forcing pedestrians to use the road as pathways.

Streets including the Paul Tree Avenue, Lily Street, Oak Street, Fertilizer Road and King Kortey Road, all at Teshie, have no pavements.

A number of people were seen walking on the streets because of the lack of pavements.

The situation was not different on the streets at Madina.

    Workshops

A vehicle sprayer called Charles, whose workshop had encroached on a pavement at Adabraka admitted that the encroachment was against the law, but added that usually the cars were moved away right after working on them.

A pedestrian, Abigail Antwi, said for a long time it had been a headache accessing the pavement.

Read: Hundreds demonstrate in Nkoranza over siting of Regional capital

A young man, Francis Osei, said the road had been used as a walkway for many years, to the extent that it had become normal practice and, therefore, urged the authorities to act on it.

A petty trader who gave her name as Aunty Serwaa said she witnessed a lady knocked down by a car while walking on the road for lack of space on the pavement.

    Parking space in the city

On what was being done to put things right, the Public Affairs Officer of the AMA, Mr Gilbert Ankah, said some parking lots had been designed for car owners as part of efforts to ensure pedestrian safety in the city.

He said the Chief Executive of the AMA, Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, had also directed all vehicle owners to desist from parking on the streets and pavements and rather use designated parking spaces in the city so that their vehicles would not be clamped and towed away by city guards.

According to Mr Ankrah, there were about 3,657 off-street parking spaces and over 1,000 on-street parking bays in the city to address the parking needs of commuters.

He said available off-street parking spaces in the city and their capacities were the Ridge Car Park, 500; SSNIT Pension House Car Park, 627; Accra Financial Centre Car Park, 80; SIC Life Mall Car Park, 60; Octagon Car Park, 1,500; Accra City Car Park, 500; Rawlings Park, 320, and the Makola Shopping Mall Car Park, 310.

He gave an assurance that the assembly would continue to empower its metro guards and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the police to act on the issues to ensure safety on the road.

Efforts to reach the Municipal Chief Executive for Korle Klottey, Mr Samuel James Nii Adjei Tawiah, for his comments did not yield any result.

  • Gyankroma Akufo-Addo did not airlift fans to AFCON – MOYS

The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) has described as false and frivolous allegations that Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, the daughter of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was awarded a contract to airlift members of the Black Stars Supporters Union to the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.

According to a statement signed by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, the publications allege that Ms Akufo-Addo was contracted to airlift the Black Stars Supporters Union to Egypt and provide them with hostel and food for the period of the tournament.

“The publications went on to further allege that it cost government $20,000 for each supporter to be transported, hence Ms. Akufo-Addo having pocketed a total amount of $2,400,000 for airlifting 120 supporters to the tournament,” the statement said.

However, the Ministry says the false reports are a well-calculated attempt to soil the name of the President of the Republic because the contract was awarded to White Oak Limited, a reputable agency with an impressive experience in the travel and tour business.

The statement stressed that all flight arrangements regarding the airlifting of the supporters, officials of the MOYS and other key stakeholders were overseen by a five-member Committee made up of a staff of the MOYS and a representative from the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice.

The committee was tasked by Mr Asiamah “with the responsibility of ensuring the successful organization of Ghana Supporters and other officials to support the Black Stars in the country’s quest to win our 5th AFCON Cup,” the statement said.

“Therefore, the reported sum of money alleged to have been amassed by the daughter of H.E. the President is totally unfounded, mischievous and a figment of their own imaginations”.

Ghana crashed out of the competition at the Round of 16 stage after a 5-4 penalty shootout loss against Tunisia. The match ended 1-1 in normal time.
