  • US lawmakers delay Mueller testimony by one week

Former special counsel Robert Mueller will testify before two U.S. House of Representatives committees on July 24, one week later than originally scheduled, the chairmen of the panels said in a statement on Friday.

Mueller, who investigated Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, has agreed to appear for “an extended period of time,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said. Mueller had been scheduled to appear for two-hour public hearings before each panel.

Read: Mueller report: Trump cleared of conspiring with Russia

The earlier uncertainty presented a distraction for Democrats, who have billed Mueller’s testimony as a potential watershed moment that could focus attention on segments of his 448-page report that raise troubling questions about President Donald Trump’s efforts to impede the federal investigation.

The Judiciary Committee also sought to interview former Mueller aides Aaron Zebley and James Quarles behind closed doors. But Rep. Steve Cohen told reporters they would not appear after the Justice Department directed them not to.

Judiciary Committee members balked at the unofficial, earlier arrangement for Mueller, because many of the panel’s less senior lawmakers would not get time to ask questions.

“Everyone on the committee wants an opportunity to examine Mr. Mueller,” said Rep. David Cicilline, a senior House Judiciary Democrat. “We have been arguing for as much time as we can get. Obviously, we want to make sure that there’s a full hearing.”

Mueller’s investigation was not able to establish evidence of collusion between Russia and the Trump 2016 presidential campaign. It made no final recommendation on whether there was obstruction of justice by Trump.

  • Somalia hotel siege over, 12 dead

At least 12 people were killed and more than 30 injured in a suicide bomb and gun attack claimed by Al-Shabaab militants on a popular hotel in southern Somalia, a security official said Saturday.

“The security forces are in control now and the last terrorist was shot and killed”, Mohamed Abdiweli, a security official, said.

“There are dead bodies and wounded people strewn inside the hotel and we cannot give exact detail of the casualties but we have confirmed so far 12 people killed and more than thirty others wounded,” Abdiweli said.

Read: Somalia cuts diplomatic ties with Guinea over Somaliland

“We believe… there were four gunmen involved in the attack and the death toll could be higher because we see (the) devastating consequences of the (bomb) blast and gunfire,” he added.

Authorities said Friday a suicide bomber rammed a vehicle loaded with explosives into the Medina hotel in the port town of Kismayo before several heavily armed gunmen forced their way inside, shooting as they went.

“The blast was very big,” said witness Hussein Muktar.

“There is chaos inside, I saw several dead bodies carried from the scene and people are fleeing from the nearby buildings,” Muktar said during the assault.

The attack is the latest in a long line of bombing and assaults claimed by the Al-Qaeda-linked group.

Witnesses said among those killed were a well-known social media activist, her husband and a local journalist.

“The relatives of local journalist Mohamed Sahal confirmed his death and I’m getting that social media activist Hodan Naleyeh and her husband also died in the blast,” witness Ahmed Farhan said.

The Somali journalists’ union SJS confirmed the reporters’ deaths. “It is a very sad day for Somalian journalists,” the union’s secretary-general Ahmed Mumin said in a statement.

Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.

“Mujahidin fighters carried out a martyrdom attack on one of the hotels accommodating the apostate officials of the Jubaland administration,” the group said, referring to an autonomous southern zone in the troubled country whose main city is Kismayo.

According to several sources, most of those staying in the hotel were politicians and traders ahead of upcoming regional elections.

Shabaab fighters have fought for more than a decade to topple the Somali government.

The militant group emerged from Islamic Courts that once controlled central and southern Somalia and are variously estimated to number between 5,000 and 9,000 men.

In 2010, the Shabaab declared their allegiance to Al-Qaeda.

In 2011, they fled positions they once held in Mogadishu, and have since lost many strongholds.

But they retain control of large rural swathes of the country and continue to wage a guerrilla war against the authorities.

  • South Africa’s Zuma to testify at graft scandal inquiry

South African former president Jacob Zuma is due on Monday to make a much-anticipated appearance before an inquiry into alleged corruption after previous witnesses gave damning evidence against him.

Zuma is accused of overseeing mass looting of state funds during his nine-year reign before he was ousted in 2018 by the ruling ANC party and replaced by Cyril Ramaphosa.

Zuma, 77, has denied all wrongdoing, and his lawyers have described the inquiry as an attempt to “ambush and humiliate” him.

Read: Zuma to record anti-apartheid songs for history project

The former president, who is not legally required to appear, agreed to attend for up to five days this week, though it is unclear if he will cooperate with any cross-examination.

His request to see the questions in advance was denied by the inquiry commission, which is probing the corruption scandal known as “state capture”.

“In all honesty, the commission asked me to come to testify and put forward any information that I might have,” Zuma said on Friday, ahead of the televised hearings.

“We will see how things pan out, but I am going there.”

The inquiry commission said last month that Zuma was invited to appear “to enable him to give his side of the story”.

Led by judge Raymond Zondo, the probe is investigating a web of deals involving government officials, the wealthy Gupta family and state-owned companies.

    – Bribes and death threats –

According to one witness at the commission, Zuma allegedly accepted a monthly $2,200 bribe delivered in luxury bags from a security firm that was trying to evade police investigation.

The money was in theory for his charity foundation.

Former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene, who was sacked by Zuma in 2015, testified that Zuma pushed policies on nuclear power and aviation that were designed to benefit the Gupta family.

The Gupta brothers are accused of fraudulently profiting from vast government contracts including energy and transport deals under Zuma.

The Guptas owned a uranium mine, which would have seen profits soar from the nuclear deal, as well as a portfolio of mining, technology and media companies.

They allegedly held such sway over Zuma that they were able to select some of his cabinet ministers.

Former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas told the inquiry that the Guptas offered him the finance minister’s job and even threatened to kill him after he refused to accept a $40 million bribe.

The Financial Mail weekly said on Thursday that Zuma’s lawyer Daniel Mantsha had stopped communicating with the inquiry’s officials ahead of Zuma’s testimony.

Mantsha has previously told the commission that Zuma was keen to appear in front of a “truly independent” forum to “expose lies” about him.

Zuma was forced to set up the commission in January 2018, shortly before he left office, after failing in a legal battle to overturn the instructions of the country’s ethics ombudsman.

It has been holding hearings in Johannesburg since last year.

Zuma has also been charged with 16 counts of graft linked to an arms deal from before he became president.

The Indian-born Gupta brothers — Ajay, Atul and Rajesh — have left South Africa and are now based in Dubai.

  • Health Infrastructure deficit in Ashanti worrying – Health Minister

Kwaku Agyemang Manu, the Minister of Health, has underlined the need for an improvement of health infrastructure in the Ashanti Region.

He said the growing population of the Region is outstripping the number of health facilities and the situation is putting a lot of pressure on these limited facilities.

The Minister, who was addressing students and staff of the Fomena Nursing and Midwifery Training College, said the situation needed to improve to achieve the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) target by 2030.

He is on a four-day working visit to the region to inspect ongoing health projects and also be updated on the challenges on the ground through interactions with stakeholders in the health sector.

“My visit to Ashanti has exposed the huge infrastructure deficit in the region that needs to be tackled urgently”, he told the students.

He said but for his visit, he could not have appreciated the enormity of the situation and this could adversely affect the health of the people if not addressed.

Mr Manu assured that the Ministry would push for the improvement in infrastructure, not only in the Ashanti Region but across the country to improve access to quality healthcare.

Achieving the UHC, he said, would be a tall order if the needed infrastructure was not put in place, adding that, government would continue to invest in that area.

He counselled health professionals to show commitment to duty and provide the best of care to people who attend various health facilities to seek medical care.

  • Allow police to arrest you than pay bribe Pastor to Christians

The head pastor of the Revival Life Outreach Church Spirit Life Centre Rev Paul Owusu Yeboah has laid a daunting charge on Christians to bear the torch for a corruption free society.

According to the clergyman, there is no excuse for any Christian worth his or her sort, to pay a cedi to any public officer to seek a favour or evade a punitive action.

Read: Young Africans more likely to pay bribes than their elders Survey

Speaking to host Julius Caesar Anadem on the Ultimate Breakfast Show, Rev. Yeboah noted that scriptures that preach against the critical national canker of bribery abound in the Bible.

He was forthright with his insistence that patriarchs and martyrs went through harrowing situations to defend their faith; modern Christians being no exception.

“Christians have gone through harder situations in history than things like this. People have been beheaded for their faith; people have been crucified for their faith. If the church has been persecuted for their faith, then the church must stand up for truth and righteousness in our country. Our morality and standards for life must be higher than the average Ghanaian,” he chided.

Read: Police still viewed as most corrupt in Ghana Report

Giving a personal experience about how he has conscientized his own flock, the reverend minister recounted, ”I always say to my church members it is wrong for a believer to pay bribe to a police man no matter the situation you get yourself into. I have made it a consciousness that I will rather make the policeman arrest me than to give him 1 cedi.”

Rev Owusu did not spare the church leadership of involvement of its fold in some glaring acts of corruption.

He, however, called for the leaders of the faith to build their capacities on issues of governance and corruption to be able to champion the course to clean up society as done by Civil Society Organisations in the country.

The affected companies reported by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), are Demeter and Intercontinental Ghana.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Paulina Abayage, who revealed this in an interview with DGN Online, said the 4000 bags of fertilizers were being kept under tight security and would soon be distributed free of charge to vulnerable groups and individuals across the region, so as to serve as deterrent to other importers and distributors who may want to smuggle subsidized fertilizers out of Ghana.

Mr Vincent Sowah Odotei, Deputy Minister of Communications, said this in Accra on Wednesday, at the opening of a National Consultative Workshop for the establishment of a National Framework for Climate Services in Ghana.

He said Ghana, is a Co-Chair of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Advocacy Group, was particularly keen on empowering the GMet, to take the needed climate action, in pursuance of the attainment of SDG 13.

“It is important for Ghana to tailor our climate services to the needs of end-users, and climate information should respond to the specific needs of users through the relevant forecast, based on advisory services and decision-making tools,” said the Deputy Minister.

Mr. Odotei noted that the implementation of Ghana’s National Framework for Climate Services required strong partnerships and collaboration with international organisations and user groups such as sectorial experts, government agencies, the private sector and the academia.

He said the government would support GMet, which was the lead agency in the implementation, to ensure that climate services were efficiently provided for the improvement of climate information products, predictions and outlook.

The Deputy Minister said the government through the Ministry of Communication would ensure that the framework was implemented to the letter.

He said flagship programmes being implemented by the government, such as the Planting for Food and Jobs, One village one Dam and One District One Factory were all climate reliant, which made the establishment of the national framework timely.

“The Ministry through GMet, would promote and strengthen public education campaigns to all end-users, on how climate plays a key role in their activities and informs their activities,” Mr. Sowah said.

Dr. Michael Tanu, the Director-General of the Ghana Meteorological Agency, who chaired the programme, said climate change and the increase in the frequency of extreme weather events such as drought, flash floods, landslides and rising temperatures in the midst of massive urbanization, “threatens our very survival.”

He said National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, therefore, needed to develop early warning systems, to help mitigate the impact of these disasters as a matter of urgency.

Dr. Tanu added, “though some work on this has been done in various agencies and institutions in the country, there is the need for collaboration and coordination for resilience.”

The three-day workshop is being hosted by GMet, under the auspices of the Ministry of Communication.

A prosecution witness in the trial of the alleged murderers of the late Major Maxwell Mahama has been involved in an accident.

The Accra High Court was told ACP Baffour Apenteng Nyamekye, who has given his evidence in chief and being cross-examined as the 12th prosecution witness, was involved in an accident at the weekend.

State prosecutors said ACP Nyamekye was hospitalized but was discharged on Monday, July 10.

Mrs Evelyn Keelson, the Chief State Attorney, told the Court that, she had a brief chat with the witness and prayed the Court for an adjournment.

The Court presided over by Justice Mariama Owusu, a Court of Appeal judge sitting with additional responsibility as a High Court Judge, upon the prayer, adjourned the trial to Tuesday, July 23 for continuation.

At the last adjourned date, the witness told the court that he never constructed a google map but rather re-constructed the crime scene sketch.

Mr Appenteng, who has served with the Ghana Police Service for 30 years, was answering questions in further cross-examination by Mr Bernard Shaw, the counsel for William Baah, and said he added a couple of inputs to the google map to arrive at the crime scene sketch.

Asked, whether he knew that the Military was in that District to give protection to a mining company called C and G, he answered in the affirmative.

The Defence again asked the witness, whether he knew the Company was doing illegal mining in the area and the witness said he was in the town to investigate a murder case and not illegal mining.

Fourteen persons are standing trial at an Accra High Court over the killing of Major Mahama, who was an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion, at Burma Camp.

The late Major was on duty at Denkyira-Oboasi in the Central Region when on May 29, 2017 some residents allegedly mistook him for an armed robber and lynched him.

The mob had ignored his persistent plea that he was an officer of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The accused are William Baah, the Assemblyman of Denkyira Obuasi, Bernard Asamoah alias Daddy, Kofi Nyame a.k.a Abortion, Akwasi Boah, Kwame Tuffour, Joseph Appiah Kubi, Michael Anim and Bismarck Donkor.

Others are John Bosie, Akwasi Baah, Charles Kwaning, Emmanuel Badu, Bismarck Abanga and Kwadwo Anima.

  • Thomas Cook in £750m rescue deal talks

Troubled travel company Thomas Cook is in £750m rescue talks with banks and its largest shareholder, Fosun.

The measures, which have not been finalised, would see the Chinese investor buy the firm’s tour business.

Thomas Cook’s chief executive, Peter Fankhauser, said the proposal was “not the outcome any of us wanted” but insisted it was “pragmatic”.

He told the BBC that customers did not need to worry because their holiday bookings were “secure”.

“They can book with us without worries,” he said. “We have enough resources to operate our business so they can enjoy their holidays with us.”

The cash injection will give the group enough money to trade through to the end of next year and invest for the future.

Read:US census 2020: Trump retreats on citizenship question

The travel agent launched a strategic review earlier this year but since then, it said, the European travel market has become “progressively more challenging”.

That has hit the firm’s finances and made it difficult to sell its airline or tour business to generate some cash.

As a result, the group has been forced to enter into talks with its banks and Fosun, which will own a significant majority of the travel company’s tour operator and a large minority stake in its airline if the deal goes ahead.

Mr Fankhauser told the BBC’s Today programme that “considering all options we had on the table” the deal was the “best available” choice.

Responding to a suggestion that the proposed deal was a last resort, he said: “This is a very good option to secure the business and to put the business on a solid financial foot for the future.”

Earlier, in a statement issued by Thomas Cook, Mr Fankhauser said: “After evaluating a broad range of options to reduce our debt and to put our finances onto a more sustainable footing, the board has decided to move forward with a plan to recapitalise the business, supported by a substantial injection of new money from our long-standing shareholder, Fosun, and our core lending banks.

“While this is not the outcome any of us wanted for our shareholders, this proposal is a pragmatic and responsible solution which provides the means to secure the future of the Thomas Cook business for our customers, our suppliers and our employees.”

People who currently hold shares in the firm would see the value of their investment “significantly diluted” as a result of the proposed deal.

Read:Japan firm says $32 mn missing in cryptocurrency hack

The plans may even indicate a potential retreat from the stock market for Thomas Cook in a move that would see the world’s oldest package holiday firm become a private company.

    ‘Intense competition’

Fosun said it had “extensive experience” in the global travel industry.

“We are committed investors, with a proven track record of turning around iconic brands including ClubMed and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC,” it said.

Thomas Cook said it was facing “intense competition” going into the second half of the year, blaming an “uncertain customer environment”.

The firm said it was trying to combat those challenges with a “rigorous focus on cost” and by “delivering a stronger holiday offering to customers through high quality, higher-margin hotels”.

The travel firm had already announced plans to slash costs, axing 150 roles from its head office in Peterborough, in the face of tough trading and higher fuel expenses.

Thomas Cook has been grappling with a decline in bookings and uncertainty surrounding Brexit, which it said contributed to the £1.5bn half-year loss that it reported in May.

At the time, the firm hinted that it might close more stores, having already announced plans in March to shut 21 outlets and cut 320 retail jobs.

Shares in Thomas Cook have plunged by more than 80% over the past 12 months.

  • Tunisia end Madagascar’s Afcon run

Tunisia reached their first Africa Cup of Nations semi-final since 2004 as they ended Madagascar’s fairytale run.

The Eagles of Carthage, who will face Senegal in Sunday’s last-four tie, led through Ferjani Sassi’s deflected shot from the edge of the box.

Youssef Msakni then doubled their lead after Wahbi Khazri’s shot was parried by Melvin Adrien.

Naim Sliti added an injury-time third to cap off a counter-attack as Madagascar sent players forward.

Read:2019 AFCON: Tunisia make Ghana pay the penalty

Indian Ocean island side Madagascar, ranked 108th in the world, were the story of their debut tournament. They had to start Afcon qualifying in the preliminary round in March 2017, but went on to stun Nigeria in the group stages last month and then DR Congo in the last 16.

Their squad contains players who play in Reunion, the French lower leagues and Thailand. Their head coach Nicolas Dupuis also manages French fourth-tier Fleury.

But their dream came to an end as they were well beaten by a professional Tunisia performance in Cairo.

Tunisia playmaker Khazri was heavily involved in proceedings throughout and had a free-kick tipped over the bar by Adrien. He then thought he had scored their opener, but it was disallowed correctly for offside.

Tunisia got the breakthrough when Sassi’s shot hit the backside of Thomas Fontaine and flew into the net. And the game was over once Msakni scored.

The underdogs, who never looked like scoring, took risks in a bid to find a way back into the game – and Khazri squared the ball for Sliti to finish off a quick break and seal the win.

Read:2019 AFCON: Ghana depart Ismailia after disappointing defeat to Tunisia

They face Senegal at 17:00 BST on Sunday, with Algeria facing Nigeria at 20:00 BST.

It was simply too much effort for Madagascar against a Tunisian side that, despite not being impressive, secured a spot for the semi-finals.

The Carthage Eagles were never really threatened and had all the time they needed to settle into their game. It really seemed like they only had to increase their tempo for 20 minutes to bring this home.

Ferjani Sassi was really impressive in dictating the tempo of the game, breaking the defensive lines with his long passes. His numerous efforts to help breaking the deep defensive lines were greeted with a goal.

The Bareas made everybody dream of a wonderful yet ultimately impossible fairytale. But they certainly leave Egypt showing the continent that anything is possible with hard work and ambition.

  • Menzgold CEO appears in court today

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Menzgold Ghana Limited, Nana Appiah Mensah, aka NAM1, is expected to appear before the Accra High Court today for allegedly defrauding 16,000 customers of more than GH¢1.68 billon between January 2017 and September 2018.

He has been charged with two counts of abetment to defraud by false pretence and two counts of abetment to carry out banking business without licence, contrary to Section 6 (1) of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930).

Read: Government in crunch meeting over NAM1

Two of his companies — Brew Marketing Consult and Menzgold Ghana Limited — represented by him, have each been charged with defrauding by false pretence, contrary to sections 20 (1) and 13 (1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The two companies have also been charged with carrying out a deposit-taking business without licence, contrary to Section 6 (1) of Act 930.

Read: NAM1 arrives in Ghana; being interrogated by police

Also facing the law are his sister and his wife, Benedicta Appiah and Rose Tetteh, respectively, who have been slapped with two counts of abetment to defraud by false pretence and two counts of abetment to carry out banking business without licence, contrary to Section 6 (1) of Act 930. The two women are, however, at large.

    Particulars of the offences

A charge sheet sighted by the Daily Graphic stated that between January 2017 and September 2018, Brew Marketing Consult and Menzgold defrauded one Francis Agodzie and 16,000 others of more than GH¢1.68 billon.

It further accused the two entities of carrying out an illegal deposit-taking business during the same period.

The charge sheet explained that Mensah, Appiah and Tetteh aided Brew Marketing Consult and Menzgold to defraud the customers of the GH¢1.68 billon.

With regard to the charge of abetment to carrying out deposit-taking business without licence, the three suspects are accused of aiding the two companies to illegally carry out a deposit-taking business.

    Arrival

NAM1 arrived at the Kotoka International Airport via Emirates Airline flight EK787 at 10.58 a.m. yesterday and was quickly whisked away by security personnel from Interpol Ghana and the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

He was accompanied on the flight by Interpol officials from Dubai, who handed him over to Interpol Ghana officials as soon as he disembarked from the plane.

An emaciated NAM 1 was spotted wearing an ash sweat suit with a hood, with which he covered his face to avoid being recognised. His hands were handcuffed behind him.

Flanked by two policemen, with other security men following closely behind, he limped slowly and managed to make it to the offices of the Financial Forensic Unit (FFU) on the first floor of the CID?Headquarters.

As soon as he made it to the offices of the FFU, the frail NAM 1 pulled off the hood to reveal his bushy hair and unkept moustache, as he awaited the arrival of his two lawyers, Messrs Kwame Akufo and Kofi Supremo.

    Background

The Ghana Police Service triggered an Interpol alert on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 to facilitate a search for NAM1 globally.

The police also obtained a warrant for the arrest of NAM 1 and two other directors of Menzgold on charges of defrauding by false pretences. The two directors are Rose Tetteh and Benedicta Appiah.

The arrest warrant followed reports by customers of the company to the effect that they had been defrauded.

Emeriti officials arrested Mensah on December 7, 2018, in line with investigations into a gold trading deal within the Emirate jurisdiction. Following his arrest, Ghanaian officials in Dubai visited him while he was in the custody of the Dubai Police.

A special delegation of security operatives also left Accra for Dubai in connection with his arrest to gather first-hand information regarding his arrest by the Emeriti authorities.

    NAM 1

Nana Mensah shot to prominence in 2017 after his association with Ghana’s creative arts industry with his Zylofon Media Company Limited.

He signed Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy, Becca, Kumi Guitar, Joyce Blessing, all musicians, along with the actor Toosweet Annan and actress Benedicta Gafah, onto his Zylofon Media record label.

Before he ventured into the entertainment industry with Zylofon Media, he had operated the gold dealership firm, Menzgold Ghana Limited.

Nana Appiah is also the CEO of Brew Marketing Consult, Menzgold Espana S.L, T.I.A. Holdings (USA), Brew Energy Company Limited, Brew Realty Company Limited and Cheetah Security Co. Limited.

He is married to Rose Tetteh, who is the CEO of Rozzy’s Collection, a fashion shop in Accra, and they have a son.

    Aggrieved customers

In 2017, Menzgold came under fire from two regulators, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which fire intensified last year.

The SEC, in a notice published in the Monday, October 2, 2018 edition of the Daily Graphic, informed the public that Menzgold Ghana Limited had “neither been licensed nor its adverts sanctioned by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to carry out any activity in the capital market”.

According to the notice, Menzgold was not a SEC-regulated entity because its operations contravened Section 3 (c) of the Securities Industries Act, 2016 (Act 929), which dealt with the registration, licensing, authorisation and regulation of entities in the securities market.

The BoG also cautioned the public against depositing money with Menzgold because it had not been licensed to take deposits.

However, Nana Mensah called the bluff of the BoG, describing the statement as a joke and a diversionary tactic. Later, the SEC directed Menzgold to suspend its gold trading operations with the public.

Despite initial protests, Menzgold complied with the directive but failed to fully pay its numerous customers whose investments fell due, a situation which later blossomed into a series of protests across major cities such as Kumasi and Accra.

  • NCCE calls for extensive sensitisation on NIA registration

Mr Kenneth Kponor, Volta Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) said extensive sensitisation would be needed for a successful registration of citizens for the Ghana Card by the National Identification Authority.

He said cursory observations indicated that many people, especially rural dwellers had little knowledge on the exercise and turned up at centres without required documents and information.

Mr Kponor in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the Commission also observed that some people massed up at the Electoral Commission’s offices and limited registration centres by the Electoral Commission for new voters demanding the Ghana Card.

He said vigorous education was therefore needed for the success of the exercise.

The Director said public education was not an event but a process and that the NCCE must be resourced to deliver sustained sensitization ahead of such exercises.

“We need ample time to engage people effectively in their homes, offices and other places”, he stated.

Mr Kponor said independent governance institutions must also be supported to help deepen sensitisations.

The NCCE has been monitoring the limited voter registration exercise across the country, and provided public education when needed.

  • Trump says cryptocurrency is ‘not money’

Donald Trump expressed his mistrust of cryptocurrency Thursday, saying it was “not money” and warning that those wishing to join the trade would have to abide by banking regulations.

“I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies, which are not money, and whose value is highly volatile and based on thin air,” Trump tweeted.

Read: Trump drops census citizenship question, vows to get data from government

He added that cryptocurrency, whose electronic nature makes it nearly untraceable, could facilitate illegal activity.

Cryptocurrency has flourished since Bitcoin launched in 2009. But when Facebook unveiled plans last month for its own virtual currency, Libra, the announcement rattled financial regulators the world over.

With more than two billion Facebook users, the social media giant’s cryptocurrency — which is slated for a 2020 launch and already has multiple partners — could completely disrupt the financial world.

But Trump said that Libra has “little standing or dependability.”

He also warned Facebook and other companies that, should they launch their own cryptocurrency, they would have to abide by both American and international banking regulations.

“We only have one real currency in the USA, and it is stronger than ever,” he tweeted.

“It is called the United States Dollar!”

A high-level G7 working group is expected to produce a preliminary report on asset-backed cryptocurrencies next week when the group’s finance ministers meet in France.

“The more we, the international regulators, investigate this project, the more we have serious questions and potentially reservations,” said Francois Villeroy de Galhaut, head of the French central bank.

His American counterpart at the Federal Reserve also broached the topic Wednesday and Thursday when testifying before Congress.

“I think we need to do a very careful, patient, thorough assessment of what the risks really are,” Jerome Powell said Thursday, adding that the size of Facebook’s social media network points to Libra’s “systemic importance.”

Some American politicians have called for a total freeze on Facebook’s Libra project.

Facebook has pledged to deliver a stable virtual currency that lives on smartphones and could bring over a billion “unbanked” people — adults without bank accounts or those who use services outside the banking system such as payday loans to make ends meet — into the financial system.

The ubiquity of smartphones means digital wallets for Libra could expand the use of banking, credit card services and e-commerce in developing nations.

  • Sudan military council says it foiled attempted coup

Sudan’s ruling military council has foiled a coup attempt, a top general announced on state television Thursday, saying that 12 officers and four soldiers had been arrested.

The announcement came as the ruling military and civilian protesters agreed last week to end a political impasse after the army in April ousted longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir on the back of a popular uprising.

Read: South Sudan tables US$1.3 billion budget amid peace efforts

“Officers and soldiers from the army and National Intelligence and Security Service, some of them retired, were trying to carry out a coup,” General Jamal Omar of the ruling military council said in a statement broadcast live on state television.

“The regular forces were able to foil the attempt,” he said, but did not say when the attempt was made.

Omar said of the 12 officers arrested, five of them were retired, and that security forces were looking for the mastermind of the attempted coup.

“This is an attempt to block the agreement which has been reached by the Transitional Military Council and the Alliance for Freedom and Change that aims to open the road for Sudanese people to achieve their demands,” Omar said.

The announcement late Thursday came as legal advisers of the ruling military council and protest leaders were going through the details of the agreement at a luxury hotel in Khartoum.

The landmark agreement that aims to form a new joint transitional civilian-military ruling body was reached last week after mediation by African Union and Ethiopian envoys.

The forming of the new governing body is the first step toward installing an overall transitional civilian administration in Sudan as demanded by demonstrators.

    Demonstrators’ demands

Sudan has been rocked by a political crisis since protests first erupted against Bashir’s rule in December.

The protests finally led to the army ousting him on April 11, but the generals who seized power have so far resisted demonstrators’ demands to hand it over to a civilian administration.

Tension had further soared between the two sides after a brutal raid on a longstanding protest camp outside army headquarters in the capital Khartoum that killed dozens of demonstrators and wounded hundreds on June 3.

The raid came after talks between the generals and protest leaders collapsed in May over who should lead the new governing body a civilian or soldier.

Intense mediation by African Union and Ethiopian mediators finally led to the agreement reached on the new joint governing body on July 5.

The agreement proposes a little more than a three-year transition period, with the president of the new ruling body to be held by the military for the first 21 months and a civilian for the remaining 18 months.

“PDS has been at the helm of affairs for barely five months, and we have received complaints from our cherished customers. They want us to improve on our services and I can assure that we are committed to providing just that,” he said.

Mr Ankomah stated that the company would soon employ relation managers to facilitate, maintain and enhance the relationship between the company and SICs.

He said one of the challenges the company was facing was power theft and urged the public to remain vigilant and report such cases.

“We entreat all citizens to be vigilant and where you suspect anyone of engaging in illegalities, report them to any of our offices. We promise to protect your identity and handsomely reward you,” he said.

On March 1, the assets and operations of the old Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd were transferred to the PDS under the Compact two where the Government of Ghana opted for private sector participation for a 20-year concession agreement.

The concession seeks to strengthen the governance, management and operations of the Company, and attract investments designed to reduce technical, commercial and collection losses.
