On this day 25 August 2018(Exactly 2 years ago today) Isaac “Royal Storm” Dogboe made the first defense of his WBO junior featherweight title with a first round demolition of Japanese challenger Hidenori Otake.

Otake went down twice before the contest was waved off in the first round.

Dogboe (20-0, 13 KOs) blasted down Otake (31-3-3) with a good hook in the second minute of the first. Otake made it up, but another series of shots made his gloves touch the mat for the second knockdown and the a nother flurry of big shots forced the referee to step in and wave off the fight.

  • Hong Kong reports ‘first case’ of virus reinfection

Hong Kong scientists are reporting the case of a healthy man in his 30s who became reinfected with coronavirus four and a half months after his first bout.

They say genome sequencing shows the two strains of the virus are “clearly different”, making it the world’s first proven case of reinfection.

The World Health Organization warns it is important not to jump to conclusions based on the case of one patient.

And experts say reinfections may be rare and not necessarily serious.

There have been more than 23 million cases of coronavirus infection around the world.

Those infected develop an immune response as their bodies fight off the virus which helps to protect them against it returning.

The strongest immune response has been found in the most seriously ill patients.

But it is still not clear how strong this protection or immunity is – or how long it lasts.

And the World Health Organization said larger studies over time of people who had previously had coronavirus were needed to find out more.

This report, by the University of Hong Kong, due to be published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, says the man spent 14 days in hospital before recovering from the virus but then, despite having no further symptoms, tested positive for the virus a second time, following a saliva test during airport screening.

“This is a very rare example of reinfection,” said Brendan Wren, professor of microbial pathogenesis, at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

“And it should not negate the global drive to develop Covid-19 vaccines.

“It is to be expected that the virus will naturally mutate over time.”

Dr Jeffrey Barrett, senior scientific consultant for the Covid-19 genome project at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, said: “Given the number of global infections to date, seeing one case of reinfection is not that surprising even if it is a very rare occurrence.

“It may be that second infections, when they do occur, are not serious – though we don’t know whether this person was infectious during their second episode.”

Prof Paul Hunter, from the University of East Anglia, said more information about this and other cases of reinfection was needed “before we can really understand the implications”.

  • Mali coup: No deal on transitional government

Talks in Mali aimed at resolving the political situation in the aftermath of last week’s coup have ended without agreement.

West African leaders have said that the deposed President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, should be reinstated.

But envoys from regional body Ecowas failed to convince Mali’s military leaders that this was the way forward.

Mr Keïta faced huge street protests before his overthrow and many in Mali have welcomed his removal.

Military spokesman Col Ismael Wague is quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying after the talks ended that the final decision on any interim administration would be made by Malians.

But the idea that Mr Keïta could return to power may have been scuppered by the man himself, AFP news agency reports.

It quotes separate statements from the two sides saying that the president, who has been in detention since the coup last Tuesday, no longer wished to return to office. Image copyright Getty Images Image caption Many in Lai celebrated the coup calling it a “victory”

Many in Lai celebrated the coup calling it a “victory”

The mediation team – led by Nigeria’s former President Goodluck Jonathan – will now report to regional heads of state on the progress made, Col Wague is quoted as saying.

The talks began with a brief session on Saturday and then continued through both Sunday and Monday.

At the end of Sunday’s session Mr Jonathan said: “We have reached a number of agreements but we have not reached agreement on all the issues.”

Last week, thousands took to the streets of the capital, Bamako, to celebrate the coup, which sparked global condemnation.

Mr Keïta won a second term in elections in 2018, but since June has faced large demonstrations over corruption, mismanagement of the economy and disputed legislative elections.

There has also been anger among troops about pay and the conflict with militant jihadists in the north of the country, which has seen scores of soldiers killed in the past year.

  • Coronavirus pandemic could be over within two years – WHO head

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) says he hopes the coronavirus pandemic will be over in under two years.

Speaking in Geneva on Friday, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the Spanish flu of 1918 took two years to overcome.

But he added that current advances in technology could enable the world to halt the virus “in a shorter time”.

“Of course with more connectiveness, the virus has a better chance of spreading,” he said.

“But at the same time, we have also the technology to stop it, and the knowledge to stop it,” he noted, stressing the importance of “national unity, global solidarity”.

The deadly flu of 1918 killed at least 50 million people.

The coronavirus has so far killed almost 800,000 people and infected 22.7 million more.

Dr Tedros also responded to a question about corruption relating to personal protective equipment (PPE) during the pandemic, which he described as “criminal”.

“Any type of corruption is unacceptable,” he answered.

“However, corruption related to PPE… for me it’s actually murder. Because if health workers work without PPE, we’re risking their lives. And that also risks the lives of the people they serve.”

Although the question related to allegations of corruption in South Africa, a number of countries have faced similar issues.

On Friday, protests were held in the Kenyan capital Nairobi over alleged graft during the pandemic, while doctors from a number of the city’s public hospitals went on strike over unpaid wages and a lack of protective equipment.

he same day, the head of the WHO’s health emergencies programme warned that the scale of the coronavirus outbreak in Mexico was “clearly under-recognised”.

Dr Mike Ryan said the equivalent of around three people per 100,000 were being tested in Mexico, compared to about 150 per 100,000 people in the US.

Mexico has the third highest number of deaths in the world, with almost 60,000 fatalities recorded since the pandemic began, according to Johns Hopkins University.

In the US, meanwhile, Democratic nominee Joe Biden has attacked President Donald Trump’s handling of the pandemic.

“Our current president’s failed in his most basic duty to the nation. He’s failed to protect us. He’s failed to protect America,” Mr Biden said, and pledged to introduce a national mandate to wear masks if elected.

More than 1,000 new deaths were announced in the US on Friday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 173,490.

    What’s happening elsewhere?

On Friday, a number of countries announced their highest numbers of new cases in months.

South Korea recorded 324 new cases – its highest single-day total since March.

As with its previous outbreak, the new infections have been linked to churches, and museums, nightclubs and karaoke bars have now been closed in and around the capital Seoul in response.

A number of European countries are also seeing rises.

Poland and Slovakia both announced record new daily infections on Friday, with 903 and 123 cases respectively, while Spain and France have seen dramatic increases in recent days.

In Lebanon, a two-week partial lockdown – including a night-time curfew – has come into effect as the country saw its highest number of cases since the pandemic began.

Infections have doubled since a devastating blast in the capital Beirut killed at least 178 people and injured thousands more on 4 August.

The disaster left an estimated 300,000 people homeless and placed massive strain on medical facilities.

  • Man Utd’s Maguire pleads not guilty in Mykonos court

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has pleaded not guilty and been released from police custody following his arrest on the island of Mykonos.

A court date for the 27-year-old has been set for Tuesday but Maguire can be represented by his lawyer and will now return home.

It is not clear what specific charges the England defender faces.

Maguire did not comment after leaving court on Saturday and his lawyer told Sky he was a free man “right now”.

The Syros prosecutor’s office said on Friday that “three foreigners” had been arrested after an alleged altercation with police officers in Mykonos on Thursday.

The police say a file has been opened which includes accusations of “violence against officials, disobedience, bodily harm, insult and attempted bribery of an official”.

Maguire, who was on holiday in Greece, joined United from Leicester for £80m – a world record fee for a defender – in August 2019.

A United statement said: “Following the appearance in court today we note the adjournment of the case to allow the legal team to consider the case file.

“Harry has pleaded not guilty to the charges. It would be inappropriate for the player or club to comment further while the legal process takes its course.”

Greek police said in a statement on Friday that officers had tried to break up an altercation between two groups outside a bar and that the three foreigners had then verbally abused and assaulted one of the officers.

The statement claimed that after arriving at Mykonos police station, the three arrested individuals then “strongly resisted, pushing and hitting three police officers” and that “one of the detainees tried to offer money so that the trial against them would not be completed”.

Arsenal assistant coach Freddie Ljungberg is leaving the club to “pursue new opportunities”.

In a statement, Ljungberg said he had taken the decision to leave “to progress my management experience”.

Ljungberg, 43, had a spell in interim charge following the departure of Unai Emery in November 2019 and stayed on the coaching staff after the appointment of Mikel Arteta.

He also coached Arsenal’s under-15 and under-23 squads.

As a player, Ljungberg made 326 appearances for Arsenal and was part of the Premier League-winning Invincibles side of 2003-04.

“I have been involved with this club on and off since 1998 and am grateful for all the opportunities they have given me both as a player and as a coach,” said Ljungberg.

Arteta added: “Freddie has been a really important member of my team since my arrival.

“He did a great job picking the team up when Unai left and we all have 100% respect for him as a man and a coach. I know I’ll be facing him on the touchline in the future.”

Arsenal technical director Edu revealed Ljungberg had “various opportunities over the last 12 months and stuck to the job at Arsenal”, adding: “Now he has the opportunity to consider other options, and it makes sense for his career at this time.”

Some police personnel at Old Ningo in the Ningo Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region were on Sunday, August 23, 2020, chased away by a group of men when they went to arrest some alleged assault suspects.

The incident occurred at Omankorpe, a suburb of Old Ningo, when five police officers and the assault victims went to arrest the suspects.

They attacked the complainants two days prior to the attempted arrest by the police, leaving the Stool Priest of the Bantama Kabiaweh Clan, also of Old Ningo, Nene Ayitah, wounded.

The Stool Priest was later admitted to the Battor Catholic Hospital.

  • Kenya ‘expects lockdown-induced rise in births’

The authorities in Kenya are preparing for a surge in the number of births from the end of this year, according to the Standard newspaper, citing a report from the health ministry on the effects of coronavirus.

Data from across the country indicate about a 10% rise in antenatal clinics since March this year compared to the previous two years, the newspaper reports.

No explanation has been given for the surge, but a health expert is quoted as saying that health facilities focused on the pandemic and compromised on provision of contraceptives.

Kenya’s government imposed a nationwide night-time curfew in March after confirming the first cases, and encouraged employers to allow people work from home.

Movement in and out the capital, Nairobi, and two other coastal counties was also temporarily restricted.

Kenya’s population stands at 47.5m according to a 2019 census.

  • SMC Uni, IPED, CASS European not accredited NAB cautions public

The Swiss Management Centre (SMC) University, Institute of Professional and Executive Development (IPED), Cambridge International College (CIC) and CASS European Institute of Management studies are not recognised institutions, the National Accreditation Board (NAB) has announced.

The NAB has, therefore, cautioned “prospective students, parents, employers and the general public” from enrolling in the named institutions.

This was contained in a statement issued by the NAB and signed by its Executive Secretary, Dr Kingsley Nyarko.

According to NAB, it has failed to recognise qualifications awarded by SMC University, IPED, CIC and CASS European Institute of Management studies as “a result of the institutions failure to comply with some directives issued” by the accreditation board.

NAB said: “The Board repeats its previous caution to prospective students and the general public to take note accordingly and desist from enrolling on programmes of the aforementioned institutions.”

NAB, however, stated clearly that: “Those who graduated from SMC programmes on or before 31st August 2018, possess valid credentials which are recognised unless incontrovertible evidence of fraud is established.”

Also, “in the case of CASS EUROPE, it must be noted that qualifications of all students who enrolled after 2015 would not be recognised.”

NAB restated its advice to “all educational institutions and employers to refer ALL academic and professional qualifications to it for determination of their respective statuses before accepting them for any form of admission, employment or job progression.”

It further informed the general public that: “M-GIBES COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT” located at Achimota Mile 7 has not been accredited by the NAB as required by the National Accreditation Board Act, 2007 (Act 744) and the Tertiary Institutions (Establishment and Accreditation) Regulations, 2010 (L.I 1984) to operate as tertiary education institutions.”

NAB cautioned the public, especially residents of Accra and its environs, to desist from responding to advertisements enticing them to enrol in these unaccredited institutions or the programmes they purport to run.

  • Kenyans demonstrate over loss of coronavirus funds

Police on Friday morning confronted protesters at freedom corner, Nairobi during a peaceful demo over the loss of Covid-19 funds.

The protest, dubbed #ArrestCovid19Thieves, was organised to demand accountability for the use of Covid-19 billions amid reports that funds allocated to deal with the pandemic may have been diverted to other uses not related to the disease, misapplied or misappropriated.

The police said it was against the Public Health Act to hold a gathering of more than 15 people.

The officers also inquired if they if they had notified OCS Nairobi of their impending action.

However, the activists say they had attempted to inform relevant authorities but none was swilling to accept their letter of notice to picket on Friday August 20.

    Stood their ground

They stood their ground at freedom corner despite being lobbed by teargas several times.

The police demanded that the protestors disperse from freedom corner.

The activists were about 15, as most were chased away before the number grew.

They later assembled at the Kencom bus stage, where the last stand-off took place.

  • Mali coup: Thousands take to Bamako streets to celebrate

Thousands have taken to the streets of Mali’s capital to celebrate the coup against Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.

Coup leaders arrested Mr Keïta on Tuesday and forced him to resign, sparking global condemnation.

But Mr Keïta was facing huge street protests before his arrest and many in Mali have welcomed his removal.

Thousands gathered in Bamako’s Independence Square to the sound of vuvuzelas, with many declaring victory over the former president.

“I am overjoyed, we won. We came here to thank all the people of Mali because it is the victory of the people,” Mariam Cissé, an opposition supporter, told the AFP news agency.

“IBK has failed,” said retired soldier Ousmane Diallo, using a common reference to the ousted president by his initials. “The people are victorious.”

However, he cautioned, “the military should not be thinking now that they can stay in power”.

West African leaders have called for Mr Keïta to be reinstated and the UN says all those detained should be freed.

But coup leaders say they are talking to opposition parties about appointing a transitional president, who could be civilian or military.

Mali has several jihadi groups in its northern deserts and there are fears they could take advantage of the coup.

They did so following the previous military takeover in 2012.

The coup leaders have promised to respect international agreements on fighting jihadists. Thousands of French, African and UN troops are based in the country to tackle the militants.

In another development, an opposition leader kidnapped by militants in March ahead of disputed elections has written letters to his family, says the International Committee of the Red Cross. This is the first contact they have had since Soumaïla Cissé was seized in a case that shocked the country, reports the AFP news agency.

Mr Keïta won a second term in elections in 2018, but since June has faced huge street protests over corruption, mismanagement of the economy and disputed legislative elections.

There has also been anger among troops about pay and the conflict with jihadists, which has seen scores of soldiers killed in the past year.

More than 300 doctors in public hospitals in Kenya’s capital Nairobi have begun a strike.

The health workers want better pay and working conditions including personal protective equipment (PPE).

Nairobi has the most of coronavirus cases in the country.

The doctors say they have been patient with the county government that is in charge of health services in Nairobi.

The chairperson Thuranira Kaugira tweeted that healthcare workers have improvised enough.

The doctors want a comprehensive health cover and quality PPE when handling Covid-19 patients.

This is not the first time doctors in Kenya are going on strike for better pay and working conditions.

Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals have been calling for the formation of a health service commission to address all their concerns but this has not been successful.

Out of the more than 30,000 Covid-19 cases in Kenya, close to 700 of them are among healthcare workers.

  • ‘World’s oldest man’ dies aged 116 in South Africa

A South African who was thought to be the oldest man in the world has died at the age of 116.

Fredie Blom’s identity documents showed he was born in Eastern Cape province in May 1904, although that was never verified by Guinness World Records.

When he was teenager, his entire family was wiped out by the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. He went on to survive two world wars and apartheid.

Mr Blom told the BBC in 2018 that there was no special secret to his longevity.

“There’s only one thing – it’s the man above [God]. He’s got all the power. I have nothing. I can drop over any time but He holds me,” he said.

Mr Blom spent most of his life as a labourer – first on a farm and then in the construction industry – and only retired when he was in his 80s.

Although he gave up drinking many years ago, he was a regular smoker.

However, a coronavirus-related lockdown imposed by the South African government reportedly meant he was unable to buy tobacco to roll his own cigarettes on his 116th birthday.

Mr Blom’s family said he died of natural causes in Cape Town on Saturday.

“Two weeks ago oupa [grandfather] was still chopping wood,” family spokesman Andre Naidoo told AFP news agency. “He was a strong man, full of pride.”

But within days Mr Blom shrank “from a big man to a small person”, he added.

Mr Naidoo said the family did not believe his death was related to Covid-19.

  • National Insurance Commission moves to root out fake motor insurance

The National Insurance Commission (NIC), has procured about thousand hand-held mobile devices to help the police to check the authenticity of motor insurance stickers of motorists, Commissioner, Justice Yaw Ofori, has said.

Known as Gota phones, he said, the devices were currently being configured with the necessary security features to aid the police in detecting the validity of motor insurance policies.

The Commissioner of Insurance, who stated this in a press statement, said the move formed part of measures to enforce compliance with the Motor Insurance Database (MID) and root out fake insurance policies from the system.

The MID, introduced by NIC in January this year, is an electronic database of recording and checking vehicle insurance stickers to protect the interest of policy holders and the general public.

Mr Ofori explained that the MID was to check the authenticity of vehicular insurance and root out fake insurance stickers from the system to protect motorists, passengers and pedestrians, adding it was to protect motorists from buying fake insurance.

“The benefits of the MID include the authentication of the insurance of vehicles plying the roads, thereby securing the protection of policyholders, motorists, road users as well as other third parties who may suffer from the negligence of motorists,” he said.

Mr Ofori indicated that so far about 554, 000 motor vehicle insurance policies had been captured on the MID.

He said all the old policies issued prior to January 2020 had been uploaded onto the database, and new electronic stickers would be issued upon renewal.

Mr Ofori explained that the NIC had completed a nationwide “Training of Trainers” programme on the MID for some 400 personnel of the MTTD.

The Commissioner hinted that NIC, together with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, would soon commence a nationwide exercise to enforce the Motor Insurance Database (MID) demands.

The joint exercise, he said, was meant to clamp down on dealers and patrons of fake motor insurance, in a bid to reduce the number of uninsured vehicles in the country.

He explained that some unscrupulous individuals were dealing in fake insurance stickers and selling such insurance stickers to unsuspecting motorists.

This practice, Mr Ofori said, put the lives of commuters and pedestrians at risk because in the event of an accident, such individuals could not access insurance because the vehicle had fake insurance.

  • ‘I need to speak to Messi’ – new Barca boss Koeman

New Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman says he does not know if he will have to “convince” Lionel Messi to stay at the club.

Koeman, 57, has signed a two-year deal with Barca, two days after the club sacked Quique Setien.

Messi’s future at the Nou Camp is uncertain after they failed to win a trophy last season for the first time since 2007-08.

“He’s still got a contract and is still a Barcelona player,” said Koeman.

“At this point I need to speak to him because he is the captain.

“We need to work with him and speak with various players. We need to make some decisions but in Messi’s case I hope he stays with us.

“I don’t know if I have to convince Messi [to stay], whether it’s that or not. He is the best player in the world and the best player in the world you want in your team, you don’t want him playing against you.

“As a coach I would love to work with Messi because he wins matches. If he’s at the ability and level he has always shown I’d be more than happy for him to stay.”

Koeman has left his role as Netherlands boss, with two years left on his contract, to take over at Barca.

He played for the Spanish giants between 1989 and 1995, helping them to four league titles and the European Cup.

The Catalans finished second in La Liga last season. The five-point gap to champions Real Madrid and the humiliating 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in their Champions League quarter-final last week culminated in the dismissal of Setien on Monday.

The club also announced Ramon Planes as the new technical director. He was the assistant to Eric Abidal, who left his role as sporting director on Tuesday.

“What we need to do is give a different image to what we gave against Bayern, that’s not the Barca we or the fans want to see,” said Koeman.

“You have to be very happy to wear the Barca shirt. You have to show that with commitment, professionalism, with everything you have inside. If we do that, the image will be totally different to what it was last week.”

He added: “We’re going to work very hard to build a strong team but we’ll have to make changes because the image of the other day is not what we want. We’ll have to work hard to recover our prestige.

“It’s a big challenge and it won’t be easy because Barca always demands the best of you, which is the way it should be.

“Barca are still the biggest club in the world. Now we have to work hard to make sure Barca get back to where they should be. There is enough quality in the team to demand the best results and to win trophies.”

“We have 90 minutes left, these are the most important 90 minutes of our lives as a footballer and of the history of the club. You have to be prepared.

Verratti missed out on PSG’s quarter-final clash against Atalanta due to a calf injury, but made an appearance off the bench for the final eight minutes of their last-four win and insists that he is nearing a full recovery and hopes to feature on Sunday.

“I’m better, I started again slowly with the team. This injury was a bit hard to digest,” he added.

“I have resumed with the group for 2-3 days and I will do everything to play the match. I was available in the semi-final. It is the coach who will make his decision.”

In his absence former Manchester United star Ander Herrera has come to the fore in the engine room, and Verratti could not be more delighted for his team-mate.

“For us, this is no surprise. We already knew Ander. He’s a very important player,” he explained.

“This season he has had injuries that have kept him from being available on several occasions, but he still gives 100%. He made two incredible matches. We are very happy with what he does, but we do not just finding out about him here.

“He’s 31, he’s already won the Europa League with Man Utd, he’s won the Premier League too. He has shown his many qualities here.”

  • Apple closes above US$2 trillion for the first time

Apple shares rose Thursday, pushing the company’s market value above US$2 trillion at the market close for the first time ever.

The iPhone maker’s stock briefly hit the US$2 trillion mark Wednesday before dipping back slightly below that lofty level. Apple (AAPL) has surged 60% this year and is at an all-time high.

The stock, currently trading around US$473 a share, is about to become more affordable for average investors to purchase, too.

Apple’s stock will split four-for-one at the end of the month, which will cut the price of a single share to about US$118.

The value of Apple remains the same since the company will simply have more shares trading at a lower price.

Tesla (TSLA) also recently announced a stock split — a move that could attract more millennial and Gen Z investors.

Apple reached the US$2 trillion mark just over two years after passing the $1 trillion level.

It took just five months for the stock to more than double after sinking in March. Apple, like many other tech stocks, has roared back to life in that time — even as the economy fell into recession.

It’s not the first company in the world to be valued that high. Saudi Aramco topped that mark in December when it went public, but plunging oil prices have hurt the company’s stock.

Apple passed Saudi Aramco earlier this month after reporting strong earnings.

Two other US tech giants — Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT) — are moving closer to the US$2 trillion-mark, too.

Both are valued at above US$1.6 trillion. Google owner Alphabet (GOOGL) is also worth more than US$1 trillion.

Apple’s success has also vaulted CEO Tim Cook into the ranks of billionaires — one of the few CEOs to reach that level without having started the company he leads.

The market has brushed aside concerns that lawmakers have about the clout of Apple and other large tech giants — as well as worries about how some of President Trump’s immigration policies will hurt Apple and other major tech companies.

Investors are in love with Apple due to surging sales for subscription services like Apple Music, iCloud, Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade.

There is also growing excitement about the impending launch of the iPhone 12, which is expected to have 5G connectivity.

Apple — and other top techs for that matter — are also holding up much better than many other companies during the global recession that has been brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Nigerian ‘locked up by family for 30 years’ rescued

Police in the northern Nigerian state of Kano have rescued a 55-year-old man who was locked up by his family for 30 years because he was apparently mentally ill, human rights activist Sani Shuaibu has told the BBC.

The man had suffered for decades, one of his feet bound by a metal bar to a heavy log in a room without a door and window, Mr Shuaibu of Human Rights Network (HRN) said.

He alerted police about the man’s plight following a tip-off, and joined the operation to rescue him from a property in Rogo town.

“He has some mental issues and was becoming aggressive and instead of seeking help in 1990 the father decided the best thing to do was to lock him up,” Mr Shuaibu told the BBC.

“When the father died some years ago his two brothers, both younger than him, continued with the detention but today he is a free man. Some neighbours aware of his situation were key in this rescue,” he added.

The 55-year-old is currently at Rogo General Hospital where he is receiving treatment, while his brothers have been taken in for questioning by police.

Kano Police Command spokesman Abdullahi Haruna confirmed the rescue to the BBC and said they were investigating the case.

This is the third high-profile rescue operation in less than two weeks of people with special needs detained by their families.

HRN, a non-governmental organisation, was involved in all three rescue operations. Its head, Comrade Haruna Ayagi, told the BBC that more cases should be expected because it was “a deep-lying issue that has been ignored for long”.

“In most of these cases, the parents were blessed with children with special needs and since they have no resources to take care of them and no help from government or institutions, they resort to locking them up,” he added.

  • Coronavirus in Africa: ‘Signs of hope’ as cases level off

Average daily cases of coronavirus in Africa fell last week, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

The continent-wide daily average was 10,300 last week, down from 11,000 the week before.

The director of Africa CDC, Dr John Nkengasong, said it was a “sign of hope”.

Africa has recorded 1,147,369 cases, more than half of which are in South Africa, and about 26,000 deaths.

Dr Nkengasong said he was hopeful “that we are beginning to bend the curve slowly” but added that “it’s very, very early – we are dealing with a very delicate virus that spreads rapidly”.

“We take this news with cautious optimism,” he said, explaining that he didn’t want people to get complacent and stop trying to prevent the spread of the virus.

“We really want our population not to show what we call ‘prevention fatigue’, where we slow down on the measures that we are putting in place.”

He urged people to continue their efforts to prevent the spread of the virus, specifically saying that people needed to continue to wear masks, to maintain social distance and that more testing is needed.

Dr Nkengasong also said that more than one million tests had been conducted across the continent, with South Africa being one of the main countries to test people.

Recorded cases and deaths are relatively low compared to other parts of the word such as parts of Europe, Latin America and the US, which alone has more than 5,500,000 cases, but some experts warn that there may be many more cases than are recorded in Africa because of the lack of testing.

The spread of the virus appeared to be relatively slow in Africa in the early stages of the pandemic but the recorded rate of infection gradually accelerated, especially in South Africa.

South Africa has 596,060 cases of coronavirus, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. That is more than half the cases across Africa and the fifth-most cases in the world.

The country’s cases have been falling, and this has been driving the fall in cases across the continent. At its peak, there were more than 12,000 daily confirmed new cases and that has fallen to an average of 5,000.

The next African country to feature on the list is Egypt, in 31st place in the world with 96,914 cases.

  • Nigeria civil war-era bomb injures two children

Two children were left severely injured when an explosive, a remnant of the Nigeria’s civil war of 1967-1970, detonated in Eziorsu, Ugwuta in the south-eastern Imo state.

The explosive detonated on Tuesday night when the children, aged 10 and 16 years old, had used it to support a stove while roasting cassava flour outside their compound.

Their father, Goddey Uzi, said he had unearthed the supposed iron near his house a few years ago and had been using it for domestic purposes.

Mr Uzi said it must have detonated after being heated by the fire.

The two children are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Eziorsu town has experienced intermittent explosions over the years since the end of the civil war in 1970. Buried explosives, including land mines, have recently been discovered in the town.

The town was a stronghold of soldiers of the breakaway state of Biafra during the civil war.
