  • I am seeking re-election based on my records President

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said his decision to seek re-election in the upcoming general elections was because it was evident that he had fulfilled his promises.

The President said the 2020 elections was different from the last election held since he was a new entrant into the Presidential race and had not been in the realm of affairs although he had been in a government which was not his.

President Akufo-Addo said this when he addressed traditional, religious and Party faithful during the Campaign and Manifesto Launch of Mr John-Peter Amewu, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate (PC) for the Hohoe Constituency.

“I cannot come to you just for promises, I have to come to you on my records. What I have done in these four years as President of the Republic.”

He said the question Ghanaians had to ask themselves was “have I remained faithful to you and stood by my commitments to you? And if so that I have done these, then you can look upon me as a man of integrity.”

“You can look upon me as a man who keeps his words, a man who fulfils his promises, you can continue to trust me that the next four years is even going to be better than what we have gone through.”

President Akufo-Addo said “I will not make any commitments to you that I cannot fulfil. I will never do that to the people of Ghana.”

Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister, noted that the “Volta Region has a soft spot from the President” who was willing to do more for the Region if retained in power.

He said it was time, the narrative for voting for the same Party changed to ensure enough developments of the Region and the nation since the Region had gained a lot of benefits under the NPP government.

Mr John-Peter Amewu, the Parliamentary Candidate called on the electorate to endorse his candidature and that of President Akufo-Addo on December 7 for more development and transformation of lives of women, the youth and children.

“Politics is solely about development. There should be a benefit from the Party which you belonged to and it was wrong to belong to a political party that does not benefit you, your parents and children.”

Mr Pius Enam Hadzide, Deputy Minister of Information, said the President had justified his first mandate given him in 2016 and it was only appropriate that he be given another term to continue the development projects in the country.

“On December 7, when you get to the ballot box, vote for President Akufo-Addo on number one and when you are done, pick the Parliamentary form and vote for Mr John-Peter Amewu.”

  • I am committed to the implementation of free primary healthcare – Mahama

The Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated his commitment to the implementation of Free Primary Healthcare when he is elected in the December 7, 2020, presidential election.

Addressing NDC supporters at Agogo on Friday as part of his campaign tour of the Ashanti Region, he said Free Primary Healthcare will remove cost as a barrier to healthcare and ensure that all Ghanaians are able to access healthcare for free.

“The implementation of the Free Primary Healthcare plan will cost the government GH¢ 1.4 billion annually and it will be funded through Ghana’s oil revenue”, Mr Mahama said.

He explained that the Free Primary Healthcare plan, when implemented, will ensure that all Ghanaians get free access to healthcare in District Hospitals, Polyclinics, Health Centres and Community Health Planning Services (CHPS) Compounds.

He said the Free Primary Healthcare will complement the National Health Insurance Scheme, especially as currently only 40 per cent of the population are able to access healthcare because the cost is a barrier to healthcare services.

“The Free Primary Health Care plan will deliver preventive health, health promotion interventions and curative care, and will seek to provide quality healthcare for all Ghanaians at no cost to the individual”, Mr Mahama added.

He, therefore, urged the electorates to vote for him in the upcoming December 7 general elections to enable him to work hard to provide jobs, implement Free Technical and Vocational Education and Training (Free T-VET) and state-sponsored National Apprenticeship Programme to empower the youth with employable skills.

  • Video showing men in armored vehicle are policemen not vigilantes

The Police Administration has debunked the speculation that some uniformed men in an armoured vehicle are vigilantes.

“The attention of the Police Administration has been drawn to speculations that a video showing Police Officers seated on the Police Armoured Vehicle with registration number GP 2619 is a video of Vigilante’s.”

In a press release signed by Superintendent Mrs Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman, Director of Public Relations and sighted at the Ghana Police Service (GPS) website, said the speculations were untrue and the Administration considers them unfortunate.

It said the persons seen in the video were SWAT officers of the GPS, who were engaged in special operations of a route march in the Upper East Region.

“The brown uniform and headgear worn by some of them are training apparel,” it added.

The press release hinted that in view of public enquiries on the police uniforms to be used for this year’s Presidential and Parliamentary Elections, the Inspector-General of Police Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh has directed that all Police Officers wear the traditional police uniforms which are in the colours of blue-black, black and police camouflage; be it office or operational wear with the appropriate headgear for police duties.

“Plain clothe officers of the Criminal Investigations and Police Intelligence Departments (CID and PID) will however, wear their approved overt and covert uniforms with their ID cards readily available for identification,” it said.

It stated that “The IGP has further directed that no Police Officer wears a beard, except those who have been advised by medical officers not to have a close shave, supported by “Excused Shaving” document”.

The public, it advised, should note that any Police Officer who wore any unpermitted clothing for election duties would be engaging in professional misconduct, which is subject to disciplinary proceedings.

  • Punish police officers who threatened civilians in viral video – Mahama demands

Former President John Dramani Mahama has chided the Police Administration over their failure to sanction some police officers who were captured in a viral video cautioning Ghanaians against any acts of violence on election day.

In the viral video, an armed police officer was seen asking voters to go home after they cast their ballot on December 7, 2020.

The police officer who was in a brown uniform and headgear said the election was not about violence hence Ghanaians should not engage in violence otherwise the police will deal with them ruthlessly.

Speaking in twi, the officer said: “The election is not about violence. If you finish voting on election day, go home. Do not engage in violence because if you do, the police are prepared to deal ruthlessly with you”.

Reacting to this, the former president described this as a threat and indiscipline.

According to him, the officers who were seen in the video must be sanctioned because they acted unprofessionally.

He opined that the service has lost its trust and professionalism because the ruling government has recruited its vigilante groups into the service.

The police after the video went viral admitted that the officers in the video are trained.

In a statement issued to announce the official uniforms for Election Day, the police said: “the persons seen in the video are sworn officers of the Ghana Police Service, who were engaged in special operations of a route march in the Upper East region. The brown uniform and headgear worn by some of them are training apparel.

In view of public enquiries on police uniforms, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh has directed that Police Officers performing Election 2020 duties should wear the traditional police uniforms which are in the colours of blue-black, black and police camouflage.”

Mr. Mahama reacting to this raised concerns over the production of the uniforms and the companies behind them.

He was worried there has been a lack of transparency in this regard and asked the police service to be transparent with Ghanaians.

Meanwhile, he has expressed fear the governing NPP will recruit some vigilante persons into the security services for their agenda.

He asserted in an interview on CTV on Sunday, November 22, 2020, the service must not allow the government to use them for their selfish interest.

  • I will implement Special Prosecutors report on Agyapa Mahama

The Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama, says the next NDC government will implement recommendations of the Special Prosecutor on the controversial Agyapa Royalties deal, when elected in the December 7, 2020, presidential election.

He said the only thing that will save those who have been found culpable in the corruption risk assessment report by the Special Prosecutor is for them to return the money before the NDC is sworn into office on January 7, 2021.

Mr Mahama made this known on Saturday when he addressed NDC supporters at Bosomkyekye in the Mampong constituency as part of his campaign tour of the Ashanti Region.

He said despite promising not to run a government of family and friends, President Akufo Addo has packed his government with members of his family and friends, hence the unprecedented level of corruption in the Akufo-Addo government.

“They are trying to offload Ghana’s mining royalties through a shady deal called Agyapa and when we complained, they decided to hold on. But now what we are being told is that the President has directed that the deal be taken back to parliament and I know they will not succeed. Because the NDC is going to win this election and immediately after the victory, those people who have looted money from Agyapa should quickly return our money. Otherwise, we will work with the recommendations of the special prosecutor”, he warned.

Mr Mahama said the next NDC administration will institute concrete measures, including Operation Sting, to fight corruption.

He, therefore, entreated electorates to vote for him and NDC parliamentary candidates in the December 7, 2020, general elections to enable him to work hard to provide jobs, implement Free Primary Healthcare and state-sponsored National Apprenticeship Programme to empower the youth with employable skills.

For his part, the chief of Bosomkyekye, Nana Sarpong Ofori Gyimah II, commended Mr Mahama for his sterling performance during his tenure as president and urged his people to vote for Mr Mahama on December 7, 2020, to enable him to complete abandoned projects started by the Mahama government before leaving office in January 2017.

  • Fire ravages Sekondi Fishing Harbour, three injured

Three people are reported injured after fire engulfed parts of the Albert Bosomtwi-Sam Fishing Harbour in Sekondi Thursday evening.

According to reports, the fire which was seen around 6pm on Thursday, November 19, has destroyed several fishing gears at the fishing bay.

It is unclear what started the inferno.

The Sekondi Fire Command were able to bring the fire under control.

Emmanuel Bonney, the Western Regional Fire Command Public Relations Officer told Citi News in a report monitored by GhanaWeb: “We got information about the fire outbreak around 5pm. Within two minutes we mobilized, and we dispatched to the place. So around 6:06pm, our men were at the scene, and they started extinguishing the fire. They saw the fire spreading towards the Sekondi Naval Base and the Sekondi Fishing Harbour as well as the canoes and their storage of premix fuel. We had to contain the fire and finally managed to extinguish the fire around 6:48pm.”

Emmanuel Bonney continued: “Three people got injured with one being critical and the other two sustained injuries on the neck and arms. All were taken to the hospital and are receiving treatment. I think the fire started from where they keep their premix fuel because it seems there was some activity going on there. God willing, by tomorrow we will get the full import of what they were doing before the fire started. Several fishing gears including outboard motors, premix fuel, their personal belongings and petty shops close by were burnt.”

  • Akufo-Addo took a risk in appointing Martin Amidu – Kabila

Former CPP Acting General Secretary, James Kwabena Bomfeh, popularly called Kabila has waded into discussions regarding the resignation of Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu.

Mr. Amidu announced his resignation on Monday, November 16, 2020, citing reasons that he and his Deputy had not been paid their emoluments and benefits since assuming office, that the President has been interfering in his work, and also recounting a traumatic experience he endured when he released his Agyapa Royalties corruption risk assessment report among others.

He also revealed that he had been receiving threats following the report.

To Kabila, Martin Amidu has disappointed him because the President took a risk appointing him into office.

“To have appointed Mr. Martin Amidu, knowing very well the very recent history of the man with President Mills and NDC in government, President Akufo-Addo was risking. But the risk he took attracted applause from a lot of people except the NDC people.”

He wondered why he (Amidu) would resign over threats when he once said, “he is not afraid of death and that the day you die, you will never know you ever lived”.

“Indeed if there was a threat, will the resignation take away the threats?” he queried.

He also slammed Martin Amidu for his writing of letters to address issues when he was the Special Prosecutor and educated him on undercover work.

“Undercover work must be done quietly, seriously, expeditiously and with hard facts. But we don’t do this and it turns into writing of letters, this will be the end result. However, this shouldn’t discourage us because it is not this that will determine the 2020 elections,” he stated on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”.

He, however, took a jab at the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he described as incessant levelling of “false” and “alarmist” accusations against the government.

“What the NDC now seem to be doing is taking refuge in urging some institutions and the media to be levelling accusations of corruption against government incessantly.”

  • Cabic offers greenlight to Richard Lartey for upcoming bout after BBBC intervention

The President of Cabic Promotions and Management, Ivan Bruce Cudjoe has finally agreed on principle to allow heavyweight boxer Richard Lartey Harrison to take on Fabio Wardly in their heavyweight boxing contest scheduled for November 21st,2020 at the SAE Arena Wembley in London after the intervention of the leadership of British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC).

The leadership of British Boxing Board of Control and representatives of Wardly from March-room Promotions engaged Ivan for several hours before the Cabic President accepted to offer the much anticipated green light for the fight to come off on Saturday.

According to Mr Bruce Cudjoe, he arrived at the decision to allow Lartey to fight on Saturday after consultation with the governing body, the Ghana Boxing Authority(GBA).

However, both the GBA and Cabic agreed to revisit the substantive issues after the Saturday bout especially some of the unsubstantiated allegations Lartey levelled against Ivan Bruce Cudjoe and the Ghana Boxing Authority(GBA) as well as other critical matters regarding documentations.

Richard Lartey Harrison who is currently the national and African heavyweight champion, in recent times has resorted to the media to trade vituperations at the President of Cabic Promotions and Management, Ivan Bruce Cudjoe and the General Secretary of Ghana Boxing Authority, Patrick Johnson without any provocation what so ever.

The Heavyweight boxer was quoted to have said that Ivan Bruce Cudjoe who doubled as the CEO of Travel Matters continuously trying to be a stumbling block to his fortunes as a professional boxer and a breadwinner of his family.

The Africa WBO Heavyweight champion was also alleged to have said that Ivan’s financial influence through the General Secretary of the GBA,Patrick Johnson and others are trying hard to stop him from honouring a boxing deal he single- handedly secured for himself to fight against Fabio Wardly of the March-room Promotions in London on Saturday.

It’s very interesting reading some of these unguided and unsubstantiated statements from a person who should have known better but decided to twist the facts for personal interests.

I just wonder how on earth should a boxer under the management of an organization,in this case Cabic which is duly licensed by Ghana Boxing Authority(GBA) disregarded lay down procedure for professional fight and secured for himself a professional fight at the International level without any due-deligence- Ivan posited.

In other words Lartey has unilaterally ignored Cabic and GBA and went ahead to do whatever he wants.

Cabic Promotions and Management in 2018 decided to venture into boxing management and promotions with the single purpose of helping young talented boxers hungry for success and serve as their sign posts to their dream destination as potential world beaters in boxing.

Harrison was signed by Cabic alongside Patrick Alottey and Emmanuel Quaye who were immediately drafted into training camp to help monitor their artistry, conditioning and fitness at the Ghana Military Training School at Teshie.

Ivan Bruce Cudjoe on behalf of the Cabic Promotions and Management revealed that he spent over hundred Thousand united States dollars($100,000)to organized high profile boxing events both locally and internationally for boxers in their stable including Richard Lartey Harrison.”I am at lost as to how such a person could come out and attack my person and corporate integrity”-Ivan posited.

Cabic Promotions and Management is seriously planning a communique to be shared with the public in respect to some of the unsubstantiated allegations levelled against their President,Ivan Bruce Cudjoe and details of their relationship with Richard Lartey Harrison.

It’s refreshing though that Cabic has so far live up to its billing with what they have done with Lartey and Patrick Allotey.
The award winning Boxing Promotion is looking forward to improve on their achievements and admit disciplined, committed and dedicated young boxers who they will guide and motivate to realize their mission in boxing management of producing world champions for Ghana.

  • GFA approach absurd, primitive and backward – GFA

Two-time African champions Asante Kotoko have served the Ghana Football Association (GFA) with a letter, threatening to withdraw from the collective Premier League (GPL) TV rights sold to Chinese broadcasting firm StarTimes.

The Porcupine Warriors have been at war with the national football’s governing body following a heated disagreement over the club’s attempt to film its league opener against Eleven Wonders for educational (performance analysis) purposes in Accra on Sunday.

Match officials initially held off Kotoko’s attempt to film the game with their newly-acquired football videoing technology, arguing the activity infringed on the broadcasting agreement with StarTimes. The impasse saw the Porcupine Warriors threaten to abandon the game, delaying kick-off for about 15 minutes. The club, arguably Ghana’s biggest, ultimately had their way.

The GFA has been quick to issue a warning to the club about any future attempts, drawing a prompt response from Kotoko who held no punches in their reply.

“In your letter, you stated that filming of matches infringes on your contractual obligation with StarTimes Ghana. To this end, we wish to request a copy of the contract between the GFA and StarTimes to enable us to ascertain our rights and obligations and the relevant breaches with regards to clubs filming their matches,” part of the Kotoko statement read.

“If we do not receive our copy of the contract by Monday, November 23rd, we would not be in a position to honor any obligations towards StarTimes since we cannot honor obligations without knowing our rights.

“We wish to posit that your decision to stop clubs from filming matches only for educational purposes is with due respect arbitrary and against the provision of the Ghana Premier League Regulations (2019).

    https://platform.twitter.com/embed/index.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-0&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1329421104155398149&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ghanaweb.com%2FGhanaHomePage%2FSportsArchive%2FGFA-approach-absurd-primitive-and-backward-Kotoko-1113805&siteScreenName=TheGhanaWeb&theme=light&widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&width=550px

In the GFA’s warning letter against the filming of matches by clubs, it urged clubs to rely on StarTimes for match footage for their performance analysis activities or face disciplinary action.

Kotoko, however, maintains “as a progressive club, we are sorry to tell you that we cannot rely on the post-match footage for StarTimes for technical analyses since it does not provide the necessary ingredients, especially for analysis.

“Should you continue to insist on this absurd, primitive and backward approach to the development of the game, we would instruct you to furnish us with your account details in which we would refund the $5,000 [€4,213] out of the $15,000 [€12,639] you were supposed to pay to clubs as sponsorship packages from StarTimes and also instruct you of our decision to cease dealing with StarTimes.”

The Porcupine Warriors, Caf Champions League winners in 1970 and 1983, are the most successful club in the history of the Ghana Premier League, having clinched the title on 23 occasions.

In the 2019 African Sports Centre for Data Research and Technology (ASC) Ghana Premier League Report, 41 percent of respondents in the nationwide survey declared as fans of Kotoko, 14% more than archrivals Hearts of Oak.

The latest dispute has seen fans of Kotoko launch a barrage of attacks on the GFA and TV partners StarTimes, particularly on social media.

In January, StarTimes signed a five-year agreement with the GFA worth $5.25m [€4.42 million] to be the exclusive television rights owner of the Ghana Premier League.

  • COVID-19 is still with us, dont joke with it GMA

Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) Dr Frank Serebour, has bemoaned the lack of adherence to the COVID-19 safety protocols.

He is worried Ghana could face serious issues if Ghanaians fail to adhere to the protocols.

The GMA, he hinted, is currently organising campaigns and public awareness events to make Ghanaians adhere to the protocols.

Commenting on the mini rallies and political walks organised by the political parties, he said the situation is worrying.

He, however, disclosed that data available does not necessarily point to the fact that the rallies and political events are causing an increase in coronavirus cases in Ghana.

He said we would need more data and statistics to confirm or deny the assertion.

He cautioned that these events could undermine the efforts put in place in dealing with the outbreak in Ghana.

He admonished political parties to advise their supporters to adhere strictly to the safety protocols.

The medical practitioner also asked the politicians to adopt innovative ways for their campaigns and avoid the large crowds.

He warned Ghana could have more cases after the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections if we continue to disregard the protocols.

On the commitment of health workers, he said they are still strong despite the fatigue that sets in sometimes.

“The commitment of health workers is not in doubt. We seem tired but we have not given up.”

On logistics, he said they have not encountered any shortage of medical supplies but stressed the need for the government to restock the various medical centres as our cases have started increasing again.

”We have not encountered any shortage. We are okay for now. But we would ask the government to focus on the treatment centres as the cases keep rising. They need to restock the centres including human resources.”

He concluded by warning that persons who have recovered from the virus can be reinfected and that is dangerous.

  • NHIA has cleared all arrears to providers – Deputy CEO

Yaa Pokuaa Baiden, Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Administration and Human Resource at the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disclosed that the Authority has been able to clear all arrears owed providers since 2016.

She disclosed that they have also paid all arrears in 2020 up to April and have initiated the payment processes to all providers of the Authority for May 2020.

She advised providers to make sure claims were brought on time so that they could be vetted and paid on time.

Mrs Baiden disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at the sidelines of a thanksgiving service by the Regional Directorate of NHIA at the Bethel Methodist Church in Takoradi to climax its Week Celebration.

She also hinted that her outfit had been able to introduce a lot of new innovations to aid the system by improving claim processing with 30 percent E-claims, and web-based portal where credential facilities did not need to come to the Head Office from all over the country for renewal of credentials.

She explained that through digitization there had been a significant cut down on fraudulent services that would have gone to waste.

She said the Authority had 4,300 credential facilities throughout the country, both public and private operating under the Ghana Health Service (GHS) through the CHP Compounds, Maternity Homes, Secondary, Primary and Tertiary facilities.

She urged members of the Scheme to always insist on their rights for the needed service or attention and asked them to read through their Subscriber Handbook, which was available at their offices to know about their rights and responsibilities as well as the benefits that awaited them.

“The Handbook also gives information on the drug lists so that when providers deny them of any drug that is covered by the Scheme then they can insist on the right one to be given to them,”.

Mrs Baiden added that the Scheme also offered in-patients and out-patients services (OPD), dental services, maternal and maternity services be it antenatal, post natal or surgical cases through normal deliveries and cesarean services.

“The NHIS is a pivotal instrument in making sure that we achieve universal health coverage and as part of its week-long celebration is leaving no one behind”.

“In achieving universal health coverage we need to make sure that our membership is at the highest for a generous benefit package then, we can provide the financial backing for it”, she emphasized.

She encouraged Ghanaians who were not members of the Scheme to get registered and implored all non active members to do well to renew their membership to also enjoy the benefits the Scheme offers.

“If your card has expired then it means you are not an active member so you need to renew your membership which you can do by dialing *929# for renewal without having to go to our offices”, she divulged.

Mrs Baiden noted that the Scheme has nearly 23 million subscribers but only 11 million were active, hence, the Authority was making sure that the inactive members were encouraged to activate their membership by using the shortcode.

  • ECG, POBAD partner to install electric vehicle charging systems across the country

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has partnered an indigenous Ghanaian firm POBAD International to install electric vehicle (EV) charging systems across Ghana.

According to statement issued by the power distribution company, the move is intended to shed light on the introduction and usage of electric vehicle modules to Ghanaian consumers.

Managing Director of ECG, Kwame Agyeman-Budu said his outfit has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with POBAD International Limited to pilot the operations of the EV charging system over the next three months in strategic locations of Accra.

“The pilot phase would afford ECG the opportunity to carry out a thorough engineering and commercial studies into the effects of the EV charging system on EC’s electricity distribution networks and the energy consumption rate of the different charging systems,” Agyeman Budu said.

He added results from the pilot phase would guide all interested persons in the automobile industry to contribute significantly to the development of the EV subsector in Ghana.

Agyeman-Budu called further called on all relevant stakeholders and institutions to collaborate towards developing standards to grow the EV sector.

“We wish to call on the Ghana Standards Authority, the Energy Commission, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and other relevant bodies and institutions to work together with ECG to develop standards and regulations to guide and govern the growing EV sector in Ghana,” he said.

Managing Director of POBAD International Limited, Paul Badoo on his part said his outfit seeks to partner with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to replicate the initiative in the Northern sector of the country.

Baidoo noted the company has so far installed two EV charging sites at the A&C Mall in East Legon, Accra, and Stanbic Heights, Airport City.

“More of these sites will be completed in 2021 and we plan to install ultra-fast EV charging hardware which would charge electric vehicles between 15 and 30 minutes at their partner filling stations along the major highways to offer support to EV drivers when they travel between towns and other regions in Ghana,” he disclosed.

On the payment options for the EV charging systems, Badoo explained, “Payment for the use of EV charge-up hardware will be strictly cashless using a bank credit and debit card. An authorised mobile pay Apps will be made possible when our integration with some financial service partners is completed in the near future.”

Chief Director of the Ministry of Energy, Lawrence Apaase, who represented the sector Minister, noted that the advent of EVs in the country would help to make good the utilisation of the excess energy the country has been paying for.

He allayed the fears of those who think that the electricity consumption by EVs could limit electricity supply to domestic consumption.

“Already, we have more than we need for our daily use and so filling in more demand would rather help us consume the excess we are paying for without utilising it,” he explained.

Mr Apaase commended ECG for the initiative, saying it would not only benefit individuals but also help Ghana by helping the country stay compliant with United Nations Development Goals Especially Goal 7, which is about clean energy.

Meanwhile, in 2019, Ghana’s electricity regulator, Energy Commission, outdoored the “Drive Electric Initiative” as part of effort geared towards promoting the use of electric powered vehicles for the transportation needs of Ghanaians.

  • Missing names in Special Voting: Security Expert warns of serious security implications

Security Expert, Adam Bonaa, has intensified his call on the EC to rectify the issue of missing names on the Special Voters Register as he warns of the serious implication this occurrence may have on the December 7th elections.

According to him, this phenomenon may cause serious security issues if left unchecked.

Speaking to Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, he explained what may happen when he said:
“The implication is that first of all we are going to have not so motivated officers. This is because the officer has been disenfranchised. And even if these ones are allowed to vote early on Election Day, we all know that in this country there is likely to be a delay in the setup of the apparatus for the voting”.

He furthered, “The chances are that you are going to have officers who are supposed to be protecting human beings and ballot boxes looking elsewhere when there are issues. Officers may not be on time at a polling station because they may have gone to a different polling centre to vote”.

Adam Bona reiterated that he “sees challenges ahead” and it is thus important the EC addresses the issue before it is too late.

Security Analyst, Adam Bona has alleged that more than sixty per cent of the officers who will be performing security duties on election day were excluded from the list of persons eligible to take part in the special voting.

However, the Electoral Commission(EC) has denied claims by Security Analyst, Adam Bona.

Between January and October this year, the number of commuters killed rose to 2,080 compared to 1,910 during the same period of 2019.

Data compiled by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service indicates that 1,675 males, comprising 1,526 above 18 years and 149 below 18 years, were killed in road crashes in the first nine months of this year.

On the other hand, 405 females, made up of 298 above 18 years and 107 below 18 years, also lost their lives during the period.
The data showed a decrease in pedestrian knockdowns from 2,437 last year to 2,209 this year.

Also, the number of pedestrians killed dropped from 607 between January and October 2019 to 590 in 2020, representing a 9.36% reduction.

Road traffic crashes involving motorcycles killed 827 and injured 3,802 commuters in the first 10 months of this year.

Motorcycle crashes recorded a 22.04% increase between January and October this year, spiking to 4,629, compared to the 3,793 in the same period last year.

According to the data, the number of commuters injured this year went up by 4.8%, recording 12,380, compared to the 11,814 recorded last year.

The total number of vehicles involved in crashes rose by 9.13% from 18,701 last year to 20,408 this year.

The MTTD data reveals that private vehicles killed 479 and injured 2,652 during the period.

The number of crashes involving private vehicles recorded a 3.03% rise from 7,921 last year to 8,161 this year.

The statistics show that crashes involving commercial vehicles killed 774 and injured 5,926 commuters in the first 10 months of this year.

The number of commercial vehicles involved in accidents increased by 9.03% from 6,987 last year to 7,618 this year.

The total number of crashes reported also rose by 6.14% from 11,396 last year to 12,096 in the first 10 months of this year.

The 827 commuters killed by motorcycles are higher than the 774 killed by commercial vehicles, and it is also almost double the 479 killed by private vehicles in road traffic crashes.

In percentage terms, motorcycles killed 39.8%, commercial vehicles killed 37.2%, and private vehicles, 23%.

When it comes to the number of injured commuters, commercial vehicles lead with 5,926, followed by motorcycles with 3,802, and private vehicles with 2,652.

With regard to the number of vehicles involved in crashes, private vehicles recorded 8,161, followed by commercial vehicles with 7,618, and motorcycles with 3,802.

To arrest the situation, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has said that all commercial vehicle drivers would have to undergo mandatory refresher training before their driving licences are renewed.

The piloting of the training involving about 13,000 high-risk commercial drivers nationwide has been completed.
The move is part of the implementation of Regulation 125 of the Road Traffic Regulation, 2012 (L.I.2180).

The authority would also be deploying some road safety inspectors at major road transport terminals to conduct pre-departure checks of vehicles and drivers to help minimise the risk of crashes.

The country in 2018 recorded high numbers of road fatalities, comprising 641 pedestrians, 559 motorcyclists, 341 bus occupants, 208 saloon car occupants, 127 goods vehicles occupants, 48 cyclists, 42 pick-up occupants, and 14 from other forms of road crashes.

The high numbers were fuelled by the increasing number of annual vehicle population from 1.1 million (1,122,722) in 2010 to 2.6 million (2,679,394) in 2018.

The problem identified with the canker of road crashes was indiscipline among road users and laxity or irresponsibility among policymakers and implementers.

Data garnered by the authority suggested an increase in road traffic deaths and injuries during election years, except for 2008 and 2016.

In view of this, political parties and leaders are to revisit the road safety code for political parties, which required that they appoint road safety officers ahead of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The officers are to ensure internal controls and implementation of best practice road safety protocols for the greater good of the road safety campaign, their supporters, and road users.

  • ‘Arm’ yourself with condoms in case of emergencies – AIDS Commission advises men

Director-General of Ghana Aids Commission (GAC), Kyeremeh Atuahene, has asked men to ensure they have enough condoms on them wherever they go to avoid emergencies that could lead to contracting HIV or AIDS infections.

He claimed it was necessary because HIV was mainly spread by men and “using condoms was the most effective way to protect each other from new infections.”

Mr Atuahene said this when the GAC paid a working visit to the Ghana National Fire Service in Accra on Wednesday to present about 72,000 pieces of lubricated condoms and Behavioral Communication Change (BCC) materials on HIV and AIDS to the service to be distributed to all fire service stations across the country.

He said the commission would as part of the HIV and AIDS awareness month celebration donate condoms and BCC material to all uniform service staff.

Such institutions include the GNFS, the Police, Immigration, and Ghana Armed Forces among others to enable them to protect themselves from new HIV infections when they leave home to perform national duties elsewhere.

The GAC Director said presently HIV infections had soared in the country with staff of the uniform service found to be the groups with high HIV prevalence during the early stages of the pandemic.

“The HIV new infections have been around 20,000 over the last five years and that is not too good, we have to reduce new infections to the barest minimum because that is one of the ways to eliminate AIDS by 2030,” he said.

He appealed to the public to desist from stigmatizing persons living with HIV and AIDS saying; “the only thing that stops stigma is when affected persons voice out.”

Mr Atuahaene called on Ghanaians to support HIV and AIDS prevention activities, treatment and care in the workplace to help stop the spread of the virus in communities.

Mr Edwin Ekow Blankson, Chief Fire Officer of the GNFS, said there was the need to find new avenues to stop the spread of the virus.

“HIV is not on the decline but the rise, we should all stand up and fight it,” he said.

Divisional Officer I Charles Addo, HIV\AIDS Focal Person who received the items on behalf of the GNFS, expressed gratitude to the GAC for their gesture and assured that materials would serve the intended purpose.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, the PRO said it was not an easy task for the firemen to access the market to quench the fire.

He admonished the various assemblies to discourage the indiscriminate siting of wooden and metal containers in our markets since it impedes their access to fire scenes in the markets.

”I want to appeal to the Assemblies to take note of this. It is important for them to generate income but the containers and wooden structures are destructive,” he added.

About 400 shops have been burnt after a fire engulfed the Odawna market near the Kwame Nkrumah interchange.

Some eyewitnesses say the fire started between 12 a.m and 1 a.m.

But the PRO indicated they only got the call around 2:20 a.m.

  • Why did we rush to set up the Special Prosecutor’s office? – Kwesi Pratt queries

Seasoned Journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has backed Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu’s resignation.

Mr. Martin Alamisi Burns Kaiser Amidu announced his resignation yesterday.

    Reasons for Resignation

He forwarded his resignation letter to the President citing lack of operational independence as one of his reasons.

”The one condition upon which I accepted to be nominated as the Special Prosecutor when you invited me to your Office on 10th January 2018 was your firm promise to me that you will respect and ensure same by your Government for my independence and freedom of action as the Special Prosecutor,” he stated.

“I should not ordinarily be announcing my resignation to the public myself but the traumatic experience I went through from 20th October 2020 to 2nd November 2020 when I conveyed in a thirteen (13) page letter the conclusions and observations on the analysis of the risk of corruption and anti-corruption assessment on the Report On Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions and Other Matters Related Thereto to the President as Chairman of the National Security Council cautions against not bringing my resignation as the Special Prosecutor with immediate to the notice of the Ghanaian public and the world . . .

. . The events of 12th November 2020 removed the only protection I had from the threats and plans directed at me for undertaking the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption assessment report and dictates that I resign as the Special Prosecutor immediately. Fear is the enemy of change and I am prepared from the vacuum created on 12th November 2020 to meet the threats of my demise as the price to pay for serving my country without fear or favour affection or ill will. I acted professionally throughout in the discharge of my duties and my conscience is the anchor of my strength to face any consequences.”

He also revealed his appointment letter was given to him in February 2020 which means two years after his appointment by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He further stated that he and his Deputy have not received their salaries since assuming office two years ago.

“It is essential for me to state for the purpose of the records, and contrary to public perceptions, that my appointment letter was received on 5th February 2020 (almost two (2)-years after my appointment). The copy addressees made no efforts to honour any of the conditions of appointment in terms of emoluments and benefits of the appointment ever since my warrant of appointment was issued on 23rd February 2018 to the date of my letter of resignation. I accepted the offer on 10th January 2018 to be nominated to be Special Prosecutor because Mr. President, and Ghanaians knew I have been an anti-corruption crusader all my life and not an anti-corruption entrepreneur.

”This explains why I have never put the emoluments and benefits of the Office as central to my commitment and my passion for the establishment of an independent, effective, efficient and impartial anti-corruption Office of the Special Prosecutor before the end of the first term of Mr. President. This has not been possible for several reasons. The Deputy Special Prosecutor has also not been paid any emoluments since her appointment, and there is the need to redress that situation for her now that I am out of the way,” he said.

Martin Amidu Had No Special Powers

Addressing the issue during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, Kwesi Pratt argued that the Special Prosecutor (SP) didn’t have the right to prosecute, believing it’s part of Mr. Martin Amidu’s frustrations.

He stressed that the power of prosecution is constitutionally vested in the Attorney General which places a limit on the job of the Special Prosecutor and so questioned the logic in setting up the SP’s office if he cannot prosecute people.

“The right to prosecute is still the preserve of the Attorney General . . . the constitution gives an unfettered right of prosecution only to the Attorney General . . . Article 88 of the constitution, what it states and how; the Special Prosecutor has no special powers beyond the powers of the Attorney General.”

To Kwesi Pratt, the establishment of the Special Prosecutor’s office was set up in haste.

“Why did we rush to set up the office of the Special Prosecutor especially as the Special Prosecutor doesn’t wield any special power over the Attorney General? Why the haste? Even when you look at the mode of appointment, it’s the same. So, why did we rush?” he questioned.

  • President visits torched Odawna pedestrian shopping mall

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Wednesday took a tour of the Pedestrian Shopping Mall at Odawna, near the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra, which was razed by fire at dawn.

“This is really sad. It is a big tragedy,” President Akufo-Addo remarked after accessing the damage and the huge loss to shop owners and traders at the Mall.

He said the authorities were in the process of identifying and compiling the details of the victims to inform how government could provide assistance to them to restart their businesses.

“We would see what government could do to begin the process of rehabilitating the people,” he said.

The President disclosed that government had started the process to ensure that all the markets in Accra were rewired to forestall fire outbreaks.

He urged the authorities to keep the people informed about the steps government was taking to alleviate their plight.

Madam Kosi Yankey-Ayeh, the Executive Director of the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), told the President that her office had begun the process of providing financial support to the traders and shop owners affected.

She said the Municipal Chief Executive of Klottey Korle, Nii Adjei Tawiah, was providing the data of affected traders who were expected to receive some assistance to commence their businesses by next week.

  • Amidu’s resignation: ‘I’m disappointed’ – Kweku Baako

Seasoned Journalist, Kweku Baako has expressed disappointment in Martin Amidu for resigning as Special Prosecutor.

Martin Amidu announced his resignation to the nation citing operational challenges and government not paying him his emoluments and other benefits of his office as some reasons for his decision.

In a resignation letter to the President, Mr. Amidu said; “The one condition upon which I accepted to be nominated as the Special Prosecutor when you invited me to your Office on 10th January 2018 was your firm promise to me that you will respect and ensure same by your Government for my independence and freedom of action as the Special Prosecutor.”

He further cited a traumatic experience he endured after the release of his corruption risk assessment report on the controversial Agyapa Royalties deal as another reason for his resignation.

“I should not ordinarily be announcing my resignation to the public myself but the traumatic experience I went through from 20th October 2020 to 2nd November 2020 when I conveyed in a thirteen (13) page letter the conclusions and observations on the analysis of the risk of corruption and anti-corruption assessment on the Report On Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions and Other Matters Related Thereto to the President as Chairman of the National Security Council cautions against not bringing my resignation as the Special Prosecutor with immediate to the notice of the Ghanaian public and the world . . .

” . I acted professionally through out in the discharge of my duties and my conscience is the anchor of my strength to face any consequences,” portions of the letter read.

“I accepted the offer on 10th January 2018 to be nominated to be Special Prosecutor because Mr. President, and Ghanaians knew I have been an anti-corruption crusader all my life and not an anti-corruption entrepreneur. This explains why I have never put the emoluments and benefits of the Office as central to my commitment and my passion for the establishment of an independent, effective, efficient and impartial anti-corruption Office of the Special Prosecutor before the end of the first term of Mr. President. This has not been possible for several reasons.

“The Deputy Special Prosecutor has also not been paid any emoluments since her appointment, and there is the need to redress that situation for her now that I am out of the way,” he added.

But, according to Kweku Baako, the reasons given by Mr. Amidu should have strengthened him to execute his mandate without fear or favour but not pushed him to resign.

He stated emphatically during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” that Mr. Amidu should have resolutely stayed in his office but he choosing to vacate his office is disappointing.

“This was the time for him to stick to the office and use the powers that the Act had given to him . . . because you can’t sack me unless you go through the same procedures and processes that are used to sack a Court of Appeal judge . . . My source of disappointment seriously is him choosing to leave that office based on the reasons he has given, because I think it is rather those reasons which should have strengthened his resolve . . . For me, this was the trigger to prove a point,” he stressed.

Mr. Baako also asserted that, “it is not like President on his own whims and caprices or political guys in the party to say we don’t like him; so hunt him out. Nobody was going to be able to do that unless they go through the right processes. And I know him as a fighter and it will be open so everybody will have the benefit of why people want to impeach or take you out from the place. Meanwhile, you have a job to do. You have the mandate to execute and you say you have seen suspected corruption or corruption, that is the time I will stick to the office and operationalize my mandate; execute it especially when I know the people who I’m saying is tormenting me are a target.”

”Why would I leave the place for you?” Mr. Baako queried Martin Amidu.

  • Amidus resignation wont stop fight against corruption – Okoe-Boye

The resignation of Martin Amidu will not bring an end to the fight against corruption, a deputy minister for health, Benard Okoe-Boye, has said.

Speaking on the New Day programme on TV3 with Johnnie Hughes, Wednesday, November 18, the Ledzokuku lawmaker explained that the fight against corruption is a process that cannot be truncated by the absence of one person.

Mr. Amidu resigned as Special Prosecutor on Monday, November 16 after citing a number of reasons for his resignation.

He said in his letter to the president that “It is essential for me to state for the purpose of the records, and contrary to public perceptions, that my appointment letter was received on 5th February 2020 (almost two (2)-years after my appointment).

“The copy addressees made no efforts to honour any of the conditions of appointment in terms of emoluments and benefits of the appointment ever since my warrant of appointment was issued on 23rd February 2018 to the date of my letter of resignation. “The reaction I received for daring to produce the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption report convinces me beyond any reasonable doubt that I was not intended to exercise any independence as the Special Prosecutor in the prevention, investigation, prosecution, and recovery of assets of corruption. My position as the Special Prosecutor has consequently become clearly untenable.”

Reacting to this development, Dr. Oko-Boye said: “Fighting corruption is not an event, it is a process and his absence will not stop the fight, it continues to the very end.”

He added, “Remember a man who fights corruption is not himself above the law.”

  • J.J Rawlings: My tribute to an unusual African leader

One January afternoon in 2012, I as a 9-year-old girl, accompanied by my parents and younger siblings were ushered into a large but very modest waiting room in Ridge, Accra.

I was nervous, not because it was Ghana, or that the heat was sweltering.

Rather, it was the very first time I was going to meet a Statesman, one who had governed a country for almost 2 decades and also revered on the African continent. His name was Jerry John Rawlings.

With my video camera, lights and stand safely tucked in my backpack, I slowly went over the questions I wanted to ask him, about the Ghana Revolution, as we waited to see him.

The reason was that, I had entered a competition meant for 11 16 year old’s back at school in California, and we were challenged to do a play-act, or create a short documentary about a successful revolution anywhere in the world.

I wanted to do something totally different from my classmates [I was 2 years ahead], and because I was younger, and smaller, they didn’t like my idea of doing something outside of the US very much especially not in Africa of all places.

So, I wrote to President Rawlings, explaining my predicament, and asked if he would allow me to record my meeting and session with him, for the documentary about a successful revolution.

His answer came 3 weeks later. ‘It was simple and blunt.

“If you are serious enough and can come over to Ghana, I would make time for you and your documentary.”

I was told before we arrived that he had 15 minutes for me, because he was busy, and was travelling overseas that evening. It was probably true because there were about 9 older people waiting in his lobby when we arrived.

An hour later, my camera rolling, I began asking him questions about the Ghana Revolution, and what things were like then in Ghana. He spoke very candidly, giving as an example of how he was asked by his superiors to fly a fighter jet over those demonstrating, to intimidate them into silence. He didn’t like that at all. I was a little surprised he shared that, and many more things on camera, but perhaps his openness and penchant for fairness was a flaw he lived with.

President Rawlings at the end of our session walked my family and I to our car and spent more time talking with me, while others still waited to see me.

He said whenever I was in Ghana, I should stop by to say hello, and share with him how I was doing with my projects.

My second short documentary at the age of 12 was on the 1967 OAU and the effects it had on three countries, Malawi, Tanzania and Mauritius. For that project, I sat down with Presidents, Joyce Banda of Malawi, Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and Rakeshwur Purryag of Mauritius.

The African Union heard about the documentary project. As an example of their belief in the power and voice of youths, I was invited in April 2013, to screen it in Ethiopia during the 50th Anniversary of the OAU now called Africa Union.

In the main hall of the AU building in downtown Addis Ababa, there were trains of world leaders, their staff and personal security – walking from one end of the hall to another, attending plenary and bilateral meetings. There were more than 70 heads of state there, mostly from the AU, but also Caribbean, Latin America, and some from Asia.

And there he was, President Jerry Rawlings and his train. I called out to him, and he stopped, turned around, and belted out in his deep voice “Zuriel, is that you.”

His entire train came to an abrupt stop also, were surprised, and the look on their face asked the question, “who is that girl, and why is he talking to her.”

In my mind, I answered, that’s grandpa Jerry. He hugged me tight, and had questions for me, asking what I was doing at the event. It was my second time meeting him. He was pleased and so proud it was my documentary showing later that afternoon.

When I was 14, I got invited to share my journey at the University of Pretoria and then Ashesi University in Ghana. I remembered what the President told me the last time, so, we stopped by his office to let him know I was in Ghana. I learned [disappointed] that he was in Namibia for the new Presidents inauguration.

Ashesi was a fantastic experience, as I had never been to the Eastern Region before. On my last day in Accra, President Rawlings office called and asked what time was my flight out that evening. I let them know it was 10:30 PM.

I learned his flight from Namibia via South Africa was landing at 9 PM. He had been told I was in Accra and leaving the same night he was arriving, but he wanted to see me. We met at the VIP Lounge at the airport, so I didn’t miss my flight. He introduced me to his wife Ms Nana Agyeman, and we all hugged, sat, and had a lot to catch up on for almost an hour, as it had been 2 years.

He made time just to see this 14-year-old. Perhaps, that was a flaw, but he was seriously interested in my projects and what impact I was making at school. I left that meeting smiling, on my way to show my film A Promising Africa, in Tokyo.

It had been three years since I last saw grandpa Jerry. In between speaking at UNESCO, COP, my school work, meeting other world leaders, and expanding my film making class, and then his busy schedules, where was the time.

And then in January 2018, I was heading back to Ghana, to speak at a community in Accra called Chorkor. Some call it the slums, I call it a place where nuggets are hidden, waiting to be discovered.

I let President Rawlings office know I was coming to town again. What I didn’t know was he asked his senior advisers to research me on their own, and then have questions for me when I arrived. He simply wanted to show off, his granddaughter.

And yes, they threw some tough questions at me on every global topic, as he watched me try to answer each one. He was simply proud, of this little girl. It was the last time I saw him personally, but we always stayed I touch.

And then, I learned he passed a few days ago.

One of my favourite pictures that adorned the walls of his office, is him on a horse as his mode of rural transportation in the days of the revolution. I also understood better the bond shared in a picture of him with Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso, another young African leader in the 80’s.

I am ever grateful for the times we spent together, the stories he shared, the lessons on bravery he taught me, and the challenges of leadership to led me to understand. Even though I am now just 18, because of the opportunity and advise he gave me, I have now sat down one-on-one with 31 heads of state to talk about global and regional development issues. These include the leaders of Jamaica, Malta, Tanzania, Croatia, Nigeria, Kenya, Guyana, Samoa, Liberia, St Vincent, Italy, Sierra Leone, and many others, as well as a US Secretary of State, just 3 years ago.

Hopefully, I would get to make you even more proud, someday.

Goodbye, grandpa Jerry John Rawlings. I would miss you. Africa, as a continent, would miss you too.

  • Election 2020: Independent candidates likely to perform better in 3 regions of the north Study

A study by iRIS Research Group has revealed that independent presidential and parliamentary candidates are more likely to do well in the three regions of the north in the upcoming elections on December 7.

The study was conducted by examining the performance of third-party presidential aspirants and independent parliamentary candidates in Ghana using historical elections data from 1996 to 2016.

“Both third-party presidential and parliamentary candidates are more likely to perform better in the three Northern Regions than other parts of the country,” the Accra-based research firm states.

The study also found that the performance of third-party presidential candidates has been on the decline over the past six electoral cycles.

“Trendline analysis indicates third parties have been dropping an average of 31,000 votes per election from a base of about 365,000 votes since 1996,” the study added.

Also, the researchers at the iRIS Research Group say third parties need to gain a minimum combined vote share of more than 3% to have a chance at influencing presidential elections, sending it into a second round.

“The likelihood of a presidential election going into a run-off or an incumbent losing depends on the combined impact of whether the incumbent or challenger is a new candidate; the incumbent or challenger is popular or charismatic; and if there is a popular third-party candidate,” the study noted.

  • Akufo-Addo refutes Special Prosecutors allegations

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has controverted allegations by the country’s first Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, that he (President’s) interfered in his work.

A nine-paged response issued on Tuesday by Nana Asante Bediatuo, Secretary to the President, in reaction to the issues raised by Mr Amidu in his resignation letter, said his submissions in the letter “was most regrettable” because at no point had the President sought to interfere in his work.

“At the outset, it must be made clear that throughout your tenure as Special Prosecutor, neither the President nor and member of his government interfered or sought to interfere with your work,” Nana Bediatuo said.

The President’s response also covered issues on budgetary allocations, financial disbursements and accommodation search made during Mr Amidu’s time as the Special Prosecutor.
