President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has instructed the Chief of Staff Madam Akosua Frema Opare to ensure that all the emoluments due to the immediate past Special Prosecutor are paid to him.

The President issued the instruction in a letter written on his behalf by the Chief of Staff, accepting the resignation of Mr Amidu as the Special Prosecutor.

“The president has directed me to ensure that all emoluments and benefits due you under the law are paid to you accordingly.

“The president thanks you for your service to the State and wishes you the best in your future endeavours,” the letter said.

Mr Amidu resigned on Monday, November 16 after citing a number of reasons.

He said in his letter to the president: “It is essential for me to state for the purpose of the records, and contrary to public perceptions, that my appointment letter was received on 5th February 2020 (almost two (2)-years after my appointment).

“The copy addressees made no efforts to honour any of the conditions of appointment in terms of emoluments and benefits of the appointment ever since my warrant of appointment was issued on 23rd February 2018 to the date of my letter of resignation. The Deputy Special Prosecutor has also not been paid any emoluments since her appointment, and there is the need to redress that situation for her now that I am out of the way.

“The events of 12th November 2020 removed the only protection I had from the threats and plans directed at me for undertaking the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption assessment report and dictates that I resign as the Special Prosecutor immediately.

“I should not ordinarily be announcing my resignation to the public myself but the traumatic experience I went through from 20th October 2020 to 2nd November 2020 when I conveyed in a thirteen (13) page letter the conclusions and observations on the analysis of the risk of corruption and anti-corruption assessment on the Report On Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions and Other Matters Related Thereto to the President as Chairman of the National Security Council cautions against not bringing my resignation as the Special Prosecutor with immediate to the notice of the Ghanaian public and the world.

“The reaction I received for daring to produce the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption report convinces me beyond any reasonable doubt that I was not intended to exercise any independence as the Special Prosecutor in the prevention, investigation, prosecution, and recovery of assets of corruption. My position as the Special Prosecutor has consequently become clearly untenable.”

Mrs Bawumia was addressing the people of East Gonja at a colourful event to mark the 2nd anniversary of the “safe delivery project” which is under the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Project.

  • Tema Regional Immigration Command foils human trafficking deal

The Tema Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has busted a Nigerian woman at the centre of a trafficking deal which purports to bring in Nigerian girls to Ghana for prostitution.

The Nigerian suspect, 20-year-old Favour CHIDI, who claims to be a prostitute herself, was apprehended by the Tema Regional Immigration Command for attempting to traffic two females to Ghana under the pretext that she would get them a job.

This was made known to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Tuesday in a press release issued by the Tema Regional Immigration Command and signed by the Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO), Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI) Mercy Budu.

The victims, a 20-year-old fashion designer and a 19-year-old girl, who had just completed her secondary education, were both rescued before they were transported to the Western North Region.

Ms. Chidi was picked up based on intelligence received by the Command indicating that she had, through an agent in Nigeria, lured and recruited two ladies for her prostitution business in Ghana.

It was gathered during preliminary investigations that four ladies were recruited in Nigeria and promised to be offered lucrative jobs as sales girls in Ghana, but were to be distributed to some unknown female prostitute kingpins, precisely in Enchi in the Western North Region of Ghana.

Unfortunately, upon arrival of immigration officers at the pickup location, two of the ladies had already been removed by accomplices and relocated to an unknown destination.

Further investigation revealed that Ms. Chidi was once a victim who was brought to Ghana to work for a woman as a prostitute at Enchi, and after serving for four months and paying all expenses incurred on her as part of her recruitment deal, was set free.

She then started her own prostitution business and that was when she requested for the ladies to be sent to her from Nigeria to work for her as prostitutes.

As at the time of filling of this report, the suspect and the victims had all been referred to the Headquarters of the GIS for further investigations and prosecution.

The Tema Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) Kojo Oppong Yeboah cautioned that “human trafficking is evil, dehumanizing and illegal in Ghana and offenders are liable to a summary conviction of not less than five years imprisonment.

“In addition to the jail term, properties acquired from proceeds of human trafficking will be confiscated and auctioned to fund anti-human trafficking programmes.”

ACI Yeboah affirmed that it was the duty of every Ghanaian to report all matters relating to human trafficking to the security agencies for appropriate action to be taken in order to eradicate the menace from the Ghanaian society.

The Regional Commander cautioned parents to take particular interest in the welfare of their female children and be aware of the activities of agents who came to them with promises of taking their children abroad to better their lives.

ACI Yeboah also advised young ladies not to be tricked by unscrupulous persons to journey for non-existing jobs abroad, “But pursue their education to the highest level or learn a trade, because soliciting for prostitution is illegal and it also comes with a lot of health risks.”

  • 2020 WASSCE: Weve proved critics wrong – Education Ministry

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has asserted that the free Senior High School (SHS) policy that saw a record high in the number of students being admitted to SHS rather increased performances of students as opposed to what critics predicted would be otherwise.

This comment comes on the back of the recently released West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results of the first batch of free SHS graduates who evidently performed better than previous students under the erstwhile government.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Ministry of Education, Kwasi Obeng-Fosu, has stated that the government has been vindicated for implementing the free SHS policy that gave unprecedented access to Senior High School for all in Ghana with the just-released WASSCE results.

“The first batch of free SHS students has done very well and the government will keep on doing what it is doing to make sure that everyone goes to school. I remember when the free SHS policy was about to take off and it was alleged that we were putting access before quality. But the government was resolute and demanded that all children go to SHS”.

He motioned that the free SHS policy gave students from less endowed schools the chance to higher and quality education and have matched up with their colleagues who were from privileged Junior High Schools. “Because of the free SHS, a student who had aggregate 41 in his BECE got the chance to enter PRESEC-Legon and emerged the best WASSCE student in Agricultural Science”.

On his authority, the results of the 2020 WASSCE has seen students excel above the fifty per cent (50%) margin between the years 2014 and 2020. “You can compare from the previous regime and ours by striking the average and you would see that the 2020 WASSCE candidates did better in English than the previous regime. The performances of the students also doubled when it comes to Core Mathematics”.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released provisional results of candidates who sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates in 2020 in Ghana.

The results are said to be one of the best in Ghana in recent times.

The provisional results indicate that there were improvements in the performance of candidates at Grades A1 to C6 in English Language and Mathematics (Core) in 2020 as compared to 2019.

    • English Language 48.96% in 2019 to 57.34% in 2020

    • Mathematics (Core) 65.31% in 2019 to 65.71% in 2020

On the other hand, Integrated Science and Social Studies recorded a decline in the performance of candidates at Grades A1 to C6 in 2020 as compared to 2019 as follows:

    • Integrated Science 63.17% in 2019 to 52.3% in 2020

    • Social Studies 75.43% in 2019 to 64.31% in 2020

  • Stop inviting independent officers to the presidency to discuss their work Prof. Kweku Asare

Presidents should avoid inviting independent officers to the Presidency to discuss their work, especially if such work implicates the executive, the United States-based Ghanaian professor, Kweku Asare, has said.

According to him, such invitations compromise independence in appearance and furthers the myth that the President is a King.

His comments come after the resignation of Mr Amidu as Special Prosecutor on Monday November 17.

He cited a number of reasons for his decision.
He said in his letter to the president that “This is to inform the public that I resigned from my position as the Special Prosecutor of the Office of the Special Prosecutor with immediate effect upon the submission of my letter of resignation with reference number OSP/2/AM/14 dated 16th November 2020 which was received at the Office of the President at 15:15 HRS this afternoon.

“In undertaking the analysis of the risk of prevention of corruption and anti-corruption assessment I sincerely believed that I was executing an independent mandate under the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Act, 2017 (Act 959) and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (Operations) Regulations, 2018 (L. I. 2374). The reaction I received for daring to produce the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption report convinces me beyond any reasonable doubt that I was not intended to exercise any independence as the Special Prosecutor in the prevention, investigation, prosecution, and recovery of assets of corruption. My position as the Special Prosecutor has consequently become clearly untenable.

“It is essential for me to state for the purpose of the records, and contrary to public perceptions, that my appointment letter was received on 5th February 2020 (almost two (2)-years after my appointment). The copy addressees made no efforts to honour any of the conditions of appointment in terms of emoluments and benefits of the appointment ever since my warrant of appointment was issued on 23rd February 2018 to the date of my letter of resignation. I accepted the offer on 10th January 2018 to be nominated to be Special Prosecutor because Mr. President, and Ghanaians knew I have been an anti-corruption crusader all my life and not an anti-corruption entrepreneur. This explains why I have never put the emoluments and benefits of the Office as central to my commitment and my passion for the establishment of an independent, effective, efficient and impartial anti-corruption Office of the Special Prosecutor before the end of the first term of Mr. President. This has not been possible for several reasons.

“The Deputy Special Prosecutor has also not been paid any emoluments since her appointment, and there is the need to redress that situation for her now that I am out of the way. The events of 12th November 2020 removed the only protection I had from the threats and plans directed at me for undertaking the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption assessment report and dictates that I resign as the Special Prosecutor immediately. Fear is the enemy of change and I am prepared from the vacuum created on 12th November 2020 to meet the threats of my demise as the price to pay for serving my country without fear or favour affection or ill will. I acted professionally through out in the discharge of my duties and my conscience is the anchor of my strength to face any consequences. I am grateful to every Ghanaian for both the support and criticisms during my tenure. When the real facts of my tenure become well known to the public in the future, history may judge me kindly. Ghana First!”

Reacting to this news on his Facebook page, Professor Asare said “Mr Amidu should have stood his grounds and continued with the investigations into the Agyapa Royalties agreement.

“My opinion is that the SP should have stood his grounds and continued with the Agyapa investigation. This is exactly what Justice Abban did when General Acheampong attempted to interfere with the tabulation of the UNIGOV results.

“I also think Presidents should avoid inviting independent officers to the Presidency to discuss their work, especially if such work implicates the executive. Such invitations compromise independence in appearance and furthers the myth that the President is a King. We should stop creating offices just to check a box. Offices require logistics (building, supplies), budget and staff. These things must be in place as a condition precedent to the creation of offices. Incidentally, we should also stop creating overlapping bureaucracies, all underfunded.

“There is no justification for issuing someone a warrant of appointment only for the letter of appointment to come two years later. The only thing worse than that is not to pay the person for two years while keeping him in the dark as to the nature of his benefit and emolument.

“Finally, boards of these independent bodies serve no purpose. In fact, some of them just cause troubles,”

  • ECG invests GH¢66 million to improve power supply in Eastern Region

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has invested in infrastructure projects to the tune of about GH¢66million to improve power supply in the Eastern Region.

The projects included the construction of 2 by 10, 33/11 MVA primary substation at Suhum at a cost of GH¢2,809,524.48, the complete laying of submarine cable in the Afram River at a cost of GH¢7,464,483.19 to enhance the quality of power supply at Afram Plains and the conversion of a 33KV single circuit feeder to a double circuit feeder from Akyem-Tafo to Koforidua costing GH¢11 million cedis.

Mr Kwame Agyeman-Budu, Managing Director of ECG, disclosed this at the commissioning of a 2 by 10 MVA 33/11KV primary substation to serve the Kwahu-Ridge and the Afram Plains enclave at a cost of GH¢55million cedis.

He explained that the installation of the substation will enhance, customer-end-voltage in the supply communities and ensure the availability of excess power required for both present and future investment.

The Managing Director indicated that due to the strategic location of the station, it was possible for the Eastern Region to link the Ashanti Strategic Business Unit (SBU) electrical network at Agogo.

Mr Agyeman-Budu noted that several network development projects had been completed for reinforcement of the primary distribution network and also for upgrading and expanding of the networks.

He said the completion of the projects as well as the injection into the network system, would improve the flexibility of overloaded feeders, the voltage profile as well as an increase in systems capacity, to accommodate the increasing demand of customers.

The Eastern Regional General Manager, Mr Micheal Baah stated that prior to the construction of the substation, the Kwahu ridge used to experience erratic and poor-quality power supply due to the length of the 11KV feeder at the Nkawkaw primary substation, which served the area.

He said the situation made management provided a 33/11 KV mobile substation in 2016 to be used temporarily, while measures were taken for the construction of a permanent primary substation.

He noted that the completion of the station will bring flexibility in the supply of power because the Region could now link all the four outgoing feeders to the station to reduce the impact of power outages.

  • Amidus resignation: Rawlingss death, Agyapa deal are major factors

Martin Amidu, the Special Prosecutor, has suggested that the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings is a major factor in his resignation.

On November 16, 2020, Martin Amidu, the first Special Prosecutor, appointed to the Office of the Special Prosecutor created by President Nana Akufo-Addo to fight corruption, resigned accusing corrupt appointees of the President of frustrating his work.

In his resignation letter which he shared publicly, Amidu alluded to the death of JJ Rawlings, which occurred on 12 November, as a major factor.

Martin Amidu wrote, “The events of 12th November 2020 removed the only protection I had from the threats and plans directed at me for undertaking the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption assessment report and dictates that I resign as the Special Prosecutor immediately.”

  • Special Prosecutors office limited in its ability to fight corruption Ndebugri

Legal practitioner, John Ndebugri, has said the law that established the Office of the Special Prosecutor limits its ability to fight graft.

The former MP for Zebilla told Joy News on Monday, November 16, 2020, that the Special Prosecutor does not have sweeping autonomy as some have suggested.

“If you look at the Law closely, the Office of the Special Prosecutor was established like a company, which has an executive board with Martin Amidu merely as its CEO, and a CEO cannot override the decisions of the board,” he said.

“Anybody who says the Office and its laws is meant to fight corruption have a lot of convincing to do in bringing me over to his or her side,” he added.

His comments come on the back of the decision by Martin Amidu to resign as Special Prosecutor, citing interference in his work as one of the major reasons.

Mr Ndebugri, who once predicted that Mr Amidu will resign, said Mr Amidu knew he was walking into a landmine when he took the job.

“At the beginning, I said he walked into a landmine knowingly and my prayer was that he will come out of it safely. I hope he is coming out of it safely,” he said.

  • Scale up support for SMEs Freda Duplan to BoG

The Board Chair of the Zenith Bank, Freda Duplan, has asked the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to make deliberate efforts to support small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) secure loans from banks to grow their businesses.

She explained that some analysts are asking commercial banks to give out loans to the SMEs below the base points to enable them to expand especially in times of the pandemic.

However, she said, without the support of the central bank the commercial banks will not be able to give out loans below the base point.

Ms Duplan was speaking during the Ghana Economic Forum in Accra.

She said that “there has to be a deliberate decision and support to give them some form of subsidised interest rates.

“This will have to be done together with the Bank of Ghana, because there is a base lending rate and then on top of it comes.

“So if the base is already high, it is then very difficult for a bank to go lower than the base lending rate.

“For those of you who remember, for example, the EU had a lot of subsidies over the years, they have reduced a lot of these subsidies and the interventions. We as a continent and especially as Ghana, are going have to do the same.”

The Special Prosecutor, Martin Alamisi Burns Kaiser Amidu has resigned from his position, Peacefmonline.com is reliably informed.

Credie sources say, the Special Prosecutor communicated his decision in a letter addressed to President Nana Akufo-Addo, citing lack of operational independence.

Nana Ofori Owusu said this while commenting on the demise of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Mr. Rawlings passed away at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Thursday, November 12, 2020, following a short ailment.

He died at the age of 73.

Nana Ofori Owusu argued that, “there should be something passed in Parliament to give honour to our past leaders which will become a law. It shouldn’t be when the leader dies that we have to start thinking about what to do or not for the leader”.

He called on the government to seize the opportunity to permanently honour former Presidents of the country as they live and not just when they die.

“The entire nation must come together and institutionalize something permanent for our former Heads of State. Our former President Kufour is alive, we must go to his hometown and build for him a big museum . . . This is a permanent solution to give respect to all of our former Presidents,” he said on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo”.

  • Ive not received my pay since my appointment, same as my deputy Amidu

Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, has made shocking revelations that he and his deputy have not been paid their emoluments since they were appointed.

This revelation was captured in his letter announcing his resignation from office as SP.

The SP among other reasons said although he was appointed in 2018, he received his appointment letter in February 2020.

I accepted the offer on 10th January 2018 to be nominated to be Special Prosecutor because Mr President and Ghanaians knew I have been an anti-corruption crusader all my life and not an anti-corruption entrepreneur. This explains why I have never put the emoluments and benefits of the Office as central to my commitment and my passion for the establishment of an independent, effective, efficient and impartial anti-corruption Office of the Special Prosecutor before the end of the first term of Mr President. This has not been possible for several reasons.

“The Deputy Special Prosecutor has also not been paid any emoluments since her appointment, and there is the need to redress that situation for her now that I am out of the way.

“The events of 12th November 2020 removed the only protection I had from the threats and plans directed at me for undertaking the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption assessment report and dictates that I resign as the Special Prosecutor immediately. Fear is the enemy of change and I am prepared from the vacuum created on 12th November 2020 to meet the threats of my demise as the price to pay for serving my country without fear or favour affection or ill will. I acted professionally throughout in the discharge of my duties and my conscience is the anchor of my strength to face any consequences. I am grateful to every Ghanaian for both the support and criticisms during my tenure. When the real facts of my tenure become well known to the public in the future, history may judge me kindly. Ghana First!”

He added that: “I should not ordinarily be announcing my resignation to the public myself but the traumatic experience I went through from 20th October 2020 to 2nd November 2020 when I conveyed in a thirteen (13) page letter the conclusions and observations on the analysis of the risk of corruption and anti-corruption assessment on the Report On Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions and Other Matters Related Thereto to the President as Chairman of the National Security Council cautions against not bringing my resignation as the Special Prosecutor with immediate to the notice of the Ghanaian public and the world.

In undertaking the analysis of the risk of prevention of corruption and anti-corruption assessment I sincerely believed that I was executing an independent mandate under the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Act, 2017 (Act 959) and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (Operations) Regulations, 2018 (L. I. My position as the Special Prosecutor has consequently become clearly untenable.”

  • Businessman sues Gomoa East NDC parliamentary candidate

A businessman, Akwasi Adjetey, has filed a suit at an Accra High Court against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Gomoa East, Desmond Degraft Paitoo, demanding an amount of GH?498,815.85, from the politician for allegedly destroying his business.

In his statement of claim, Adjetey, an export and import businessman who deals in biscuits contends that he engaged the NDC parliamentary candidate who is a clearing agent to clear his 21 containers of biscuits he had imported from India at the Tema Port in 2014.

According to him, after engaging Paitoo (Defendant) over how much to pay for the clearing of the 21 containers, they settled on an amount of GH?625,500.00, the said amount of which was paid into the personal Cal Bank, Okaishie branch, account number 131018030419 of the NDC parliamentary candidate for Gomoa East by instalments.

Adjetey further noted that as of April 23, 2015, he had paid a total amount of GH?625,500.00 into the personal account of Paitoo for the clearance of the said 21 containers.

However, the business did not go on as agreed, with Paitoo clearing only 18 containers at a cost of GH?520,884.14 and leaving the remaining three also at a cost of GH?104,615.89 unattended to.

To Adjetey, for almost eight months, he used every means available to him to pursue Paitoo to clear the remaining three containers of biscuits but was unsuccessful.

The remaining three containers which have not been cleared, according to Adjetey, attracted demurrage charges to his disadvantage and upon further demands from Paitoo to clear the goods, the NDC parliamentary candidate “reluctantly made a part payment of GH?64,000.00 out of the GH?104615.89 outstanding balance creating a false impression that he will pay the remaining amount of GH?40,000 in earnest so as for the three containers to be cleared”.

Adjetey said the Defendant having paid the customs duties of GH?64,000.00, again failed to pay the remaining balance of GH?40,000.00 to the port authorities, compelling him to engage the services of another clearing agent to assist him in the clearing of the goods.

He averred that in addition to the remaining amount of GH?40,000.00 he paid the second clearing agent, he further paid an amount of GH?140,000.00, which amount was for the payment of accumulated demurrage charges, rent and other statutory port charges before the said containers were cleared.

Adjetey further narrates that when the second clearing agent cleared the said containers, it was discovered that the biscuits in the three containers had “gone bad and not appropriate for human consumption”.

This informed his thoughts to further engage Paitoo “orally about the state of the said biscuits before same were destroyed”.

“The conduct of Paitoo in the whole transaction has destroyed my business”, he noted in a telephone conversation with our reporter.

Adjetey laments that he has an outstanding amount of GH?40,615.85 with Paitoo, an amount he is demanding after the politician failed to clear the said three containers.

Further to that, he is also demanding an amount of US$79,000, equivalent to GH?458,200.00 being the cost of the biscuits in the three containers that were destroyed from Paitoo, having been paid the clearance fee but failed to do so.

According to Adjetey, having informed Paitoo to pay him all his outstanding money as well as that of the cost of the destroyed biscuits, the NDC parliamentary candidate has failed to make any payment, alleging that he, Paitoo, is using his strong political connections to destroy his business.

He said unless ordered by the Court, Paitoo will not pay him the said amount out of which GH?40,615.58 is an outstanding balance of the total amount of money the Plaintiff paid for the clearance of the 21 containers of biscuits and an amount of GH?458,200 being the cedi equivalent of US$79,000 being the total cost of the biscuits in the three containers that were destroyed because same went bad and unfit for human consumption.

  • President gave me my appointment letter two years after I took office Amidu

Martin Amidu has claimed that his appointment letter was given to him on 5th February 2020, two years after he assumed office as the Special Prosecutor.

He revealed this in his resignation letter to the president on Monday, November 16.

“It is essential for me to state for the purpose of the records, and contrary to public perceptions, that my appointment letter was received on 5th February 2020 (almost two (2)-years after my appointment),” the letter to the president said.

Below is his full letter to the president…

This is to inform the public that I resigned from my position as the Special Prosecutor of the Office of the Special Prosecutor with immediate effect upon the submission of my letter of resignation with reference number OSP/2/AM/14 dated 16th November 2020 which was received at the Office of the President at 15:15 HRS this afternoon.

I should not ordinarily be announcing my resignation to the public myself but the traumatic experience I went through from 20th October 2020 to 2nd November 2020 when I conveyed in a thirteen (13) page letter the conclusions and observations on the analysis of the risk of corruption and anti-corruption assessment on the Report On Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions and Other Matters Related Thereto to the President as Chairman of the National Security Council caution against not bringing my resignation as the Special Prosecutor with immediate to the notice of the Ghanaian public and the world.

  • Legon Cities, Berekum Chelsea share spoils in season’s opener

Legon Cities were held to 1-1 draw game by Berekum Chelsea in the first game of 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season.

Stephen Amankona’s opener from the penalty spot was cancelled by Jonah Attuquaye’s perfectly struck penalty all in the first half.

It was a cagey affair inside the opening minutes but the away side was on top creating few chances with Legon Cities goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda producing some good saves.

Perhaps the home side were missing the services of their newly acquired highly prolific striker Asamoah Gyan who was not fit for the match.

Berekum Chelsea broke the deadlock on 23rd-minute mark when their captain Stephen Amankonah struck them in-front from the penalty spot after Kofi Owusu was brought down in the penalty area.

Legon Cities midfielder Baba Mahama came close to restoring parity for the home side but his header skewed narrowly wide.

Legon Cities were awarded a penalty in the 35th minute after Baba Mahama was brought down in the area and Jonah Attuquaye restored parity for the home side.

    The first half ended 1-1.

Legon Cities started the second half on the front foot as they search for the lead especially with the introduction of highly-rated youngster Matthew Anim Cudjoe.

The Chelsea defence stood resolute in their defending as they curtailed most of the attacks of Legon Cities.

Attuquaye came close to scoring his second goal of the day but his header from close range failed to find the target midway through the second half.

Berekum Chelsea nearly took the lead against the runoff of play in the 80th minute but once again Legon Cities goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda was equal to the task.

Legon Cities on the hand were gifted an opportunity from 20 yards but Attuquaye’ free-kick was feeble for the Berekum Chelsea goalkeeper as both sides shared the points.

  • 2020/21 GPL wrap: Asante Kotoko, Ashantigold, Ebusua Dwarfs denied opening day joy

Asante Kotoko’s hopes of commencing the 2020-21 Ghana Premier League (GPL) campaign in style did not go as planned as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Eleven Wonders on Sunday.

After a barren first-half, Kwame Opoku broke the deadlock for the Porcupine Warriors with a shot into the bottom left corner of the net in the 54th minute, having picked up a loose ball.

Fourteen minutes to full-time, substitute Prince Opoku fetched the equalizer for visiting Wonders with a cool finish.

The match was played at the Accra Sports Stadium, the temporary home ground of Maxwell Konadu’s side due to the ongoing renovation of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Kotoko will hope to make amends with a win in their trip to Berekum Chelsea on matchday two.

In Obuasi, a second-half Karela United equaliser denied four-time GPL champions Ashanti Gold victory at Len Clay Stadium.

After Diawisie Taylor scored on five minutes to give visiting Karela the lead, Appiah McCarthy and Hans Kwoffie hit back to put AshGold 2-1 up at half-time. Samuel Ofori, however, netted for the away side 11 minutes after recess to snatch his side a point.

Elsewhere at Akoon Park in Tarkwa, Medeama gave away an Ali Ouattara first-half injury-time lead to settle for a 1-1 home draw with Great Olympics, who found the back of the net through Daniel Appiah.

There were seven goals in Sogakope where hosts Wafa beat King Faisal 4-3. Konadu Yiadom, Godwin Agbevor, Augustine Boakye, and Daniel Lomotey were on the score sheet for the hosts. Kwame Peprah (two) and Wadudu Yakubu scored for the visitors.

At the Cape Coast Sports Stadium, Ebusua Dwarfs and Elmina Sharks played out a 2-2 draw. Dennis Korsah-Akoumah and Razak Issah scored for hosts while Richard Mpong and Ishmael Hammond were on target for Sharks.

The action continues on Monday when Liberty Professionals host Bechem United at the Carl Reindorf Park in Dansoman in one of two fixtures of the day.

In the second game, Inter Allies and Dreams FC will square off at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Earlier on Saturday, Legon Cities hosted Berekum Chelsea at the Accra Sports Stadium in the season opener. The hosts went in front through a Stephen Amankona penalty but Jonah Attuquaye similarly hit back for the Royals from the spot to snatch a 1-1 draw.

The match between Hearts of Oak and Aduana Stars has been postponed indefinitely.

  • Premier League clubs receive support from Hisense

Leading electronic (Home appliances) company Hisense has yet again rallied support for the world’s most popular game, football.

Having made a huge contribution to the World’s biggest football competition, World Cup in Russia, supported Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and plans to sponsor the forthcoming Euro 2020, Hisense has supported Ghana giants Asante Kotoko with an undisclosed amount.

But unlike other football sponsorship packages that focus on just the club, Hisense’s had the revival of Ghana’s top-flight league in mind.

In the era of the infamous Coronavirus pandemic, where a lot of companies are struggling financially, with some folding up, the home appliances giant has rolled out a juicy financial package for football for the next three years, subject to renewal.

The multiple award-winning company partnership packages were designed to revive, as well as heightened competition among the clubs in the country’s top-flight League.

On Saturday, Hisense announced a huge undisclosed amount aimed at raising the stakes in the domestic league.

And for the first time in the history of football sponsorship, both the main beneficiary and the rest of the 17 opposing sides stand to make financial gains after winning.

The sponsorship package has also made provision for the best goal of the month, as well as a best fan award scheme with a financial reward for winners.

Indications were that the Hisense sponsorship was designed to urge other corporate entities to come on board in an attempt to support football which serves as huge employment for a chain of beneficiaries such as the playing body, officials, vendors at match venues.

Hisense ambassador Nana Ama McBrown at the ceremony in Accra said “l am glad my two families-Hisense and Kotoko have reached this agreement, I believe this marriage will travel very far. Hisense’s CEO told me his quest to see the league revived informed the company’s decision to support Kotoko.
“Kotoko is a big brand, so is Hisense, I am therefore pleading with the Kotoko family, particularly the playing body to go all out.

” Let’s support our team on social media, it really helps.”

In like manner, Emmanuel Adebayor, former Real Madrid and Arsenal star, also a Hisense ambassador commended Hisense for the gesture and urged all to rally behind the two brands in order to promote Ghana as a whole.

He described the ceremony as momentous and the first he has witnessed in West Africa.

Asante Kotoko CEO Nana Yaw Amponsah said “Brand association is key, when we approached Hisense they had what we wanted and they want what we have.

Kotoko is the biggest in West Africa with about 12m fan base.

For Hisense to commit such an amount in this COVID-19 period, they deserve a pat on their back”.

  • How Mali came to have its name

As a result of the glorious place the ancient empire occupies in our understanding of the history of the continent, the name Mali is as unforgettable as it is revered.

The tales of yore, one involving the man believed to be the richest in the Middle Ages, Mansa Musa, have been a source of pride for people of African descent for so long. The ancient Mali empire allows a case to be made for an unbreaking civilization of African peoples which is usually started from the time of the ancient Egyptians.

Modern Mali is an area that was one of the territories of the ancient empire. According to archaeologists, that region, south of the Sahel, has been inhabited since 5000 BC. By the third century in our common era, settlements with large populations had already been founded in the area.

Since the areas south of the Sahel were more agriculture-friendly lands, population booms were almost certainly guaranteed. The towns that sprang up around the 3rd century could count on a stable supply of food and were also more secured as a result of not having to deal with the harshness of the Sahara desert.

Stability and population growth came in handy when the Trans-Saharan trade, a commercial relationship that traveled from west Africa to the Middle East, started at the end of the 6th century. The trade in such commodities as ivory, gold and slaves, proved to be very profitable for the peoples of the Sahel.

Around the 13th century, a Mande people who spoke Mandinka, grew prosperous enough to put together a formidable kingdom. One of the reasons for their unimpeded growth was that another mighty kingdom, Ghana, founded in modern Burkina Faso in the 10th century, had begun to collapse.

The Mandinka-speaking people grew into an empire, which they called Mali. The meaning of the name of this empire has been settled, however, the motivation for calling the area Mali has proved daunting for researchers for nearly a century. However, certain theories have been propounded.

Historian Philip Wolny believes that Mali comes from a Mandinka phrase meaning “where the king lives”. This purports to show that Mali was a small town that synecdochically became the name of the empire because of the importance the town later took on.

Today, Mali refers to a proudly independent west African nation that holds promise even in the face of economic and political instabilities.

  • Make June 4 a statutory public holiday

    While there are so much noise going on about preserving Rawlings ideals and legacy, I wish to make one point clear;

No one can tell the story of our democracy which Rawlings made possible for Ghanaians without celebrating the June 4th movement as a national day and while politicians only know how to make empty noise without action, I am urging both the members of NPP and NDC to rather work peacefully and think about reinstating the June 4th bill as Statutory public holiday in Ghana.

That is one of the best among others we can do in keeping his memory alive in the history of Ghana.

And for those who are tarnishing his image, there is no revolution without bloodshed.

There is no head of States or Politicians who does not have blood on their hands. Either they do it silently or otherwise. Now stop the noise and put things in ACTION. Thank you

  • A voice from behind the dark curtains: What Rawlings would have wished for

Let decency, cool heads, and maturity prevail. Jerry John Rawlings is larger than family, political party, and a geographical country.

As much as H. E. Jerry John Rawlings deserves a befitting state burial (by convention and constitution) not only honour him, but which must also reflect his ordinary and magnanimous lifestyle, the early signs of perceived partisan colouring and self-seeking advantages by the two major political parties just two days after his demise, does not bode well for Ghana’s international reputation, unity, and peace.

It is imperative that the NPP government hands over the planning of Jerry John Rawlings’s funeral to State Protocol Department. The Protocol Department is mandated to deal with the planning of the former President, and it is well-versed in handling this issue.

State Protocol Department (SPD) will therefore meet with all the stakeholders (i.e. the head of the Rawlings’ family, appointed government officials, traditional authorities, especially Anlo and Volta traditional rulers, representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, the clergy, leadership of National Democratic Congress, NDC, which he founded, other political parties, the arts and culture family, media representatives, and other relevant stakeholders) to plan the funeral devoid of pettiness, and vindictiveness. This will demonstrate the unity that Rawlings stood for, and a true reflection of camaraderie among the average Ghanaian on the streets.

He was a man who was sustained by the energy of the masses, who survived on the vibrations of the crowd, and who drew strength and energy from the commonality of the common people. He lived for the people, the people lived for him, and defended him.

    The book of condolences

By general convention, after the death of a leading personality (i.e. J. J. Rawlings) book of condolences are placed in public places for members of the public to express and sign their personal encounters and thoughts. At the close of the funeral activities, the books are given to the relatives of the deceased to help them come to terms with the loss, or in some cases archived for reference. It, therefore, came as a surprise, an embarrassment, and petty for the highest office of the land, the presidency, and the office of a former President to be engaged in a fight over signing, and over a time to sign a book of condolences.

It must be suggested that, with this notable death of Jerry John Rawlings, official records of the condolences may be compiled and reprinted as souvenir collections for individuals and libraries.

At all times, a book of condolences must be and should be kept at the residency of the bereaved family for regulated visitors and dignitaries who call upon the bereaved family to sign. The presidency which may act a chief mourner by virtue of the fact that, J. J. Rawlings was a former President, may also keep a book of condolences on those that may call on him. The political party, NDC that he founded can not be left out of these arrangements as they must also have copies of the book of condolences in their party offices.

It is, therefore, necessary for government of Ghana to open book of condolences in all the sixteen regional capitals for the ordinary person his Excellency Jerry John Rawlings stood for and identified with all his life, to participate in the celebration of a life well and fully lived. He would love the street hawker at Kawukudi traffic lights, the illiterate fisherman at Anloga beach, the unknown farmer at Kintampo, the little cattle herds boy at Bimbila, the cocoa farmer in the forests of Enchi, the non-commercial police officer at Tsopoli, the other ranks in the military, the village political activist fighting for equality, equity, and justice, and the fatherless child in Somalia hoping for a peaceful country to participate in the celebration of his life.

It would therefore be most absurd, unconscionable, and a total disregard for common sense, sensitivity, and relevance to exclude the National Democratic Congress NDC, from actively contributing to planning the funeral of the founder of the party. Irrespective of the conduct of some national executives past and present, the NDC should never be denied the opportunity and responsibility to honour its founder. The NDC is bigger and larger than the elected officers who represent a collective mandate and authority.

Mutual respect among stakeholders and eschewing of excessive partisan score in planning the funeral of Jerry John Rawlings will yield honour to him, and attract much reverence and pride to the government and the people of Ghana, and Africa.

  • Let us not paint good and bad leaders with the same brush

Leadership is an interesting human endeavour. It is a common principle that infallibility belongs to God and Angels. However, it seems to me that many people expect their leaders to be flawless.

A good leader does not have to stray from principles of honesty and commitment to build a future of hope for the people. This does not take away the fact that no matter how good a leader may be, there should be some space to accommodate some minimal level of infallibility.

Some leaders obviously stray from the principles that define a leader. Unfortunately, I have realised that even if a leader gets it 90% correct, the 10% mistakes will be multiplied by ten(10) to cancel out the positive side of the leader and that will push the assessment score into negative.

This will wrongly push a good leader into the class of bad leaders. We should demand very high performance from our leaders but definitely, such unfair assessment will make it difficult for any human being to pass the leadership mark and that can be demotivating.

There are many good people with a very high sense of responsibility and the desire to serve as leaders to dedicate themselves to selfless service to people. Such rough leadership terrain discourages many good people from taking leadership positions though they may have the drive and the level of responsibility required for leadership.

I have encountered such an unfair assessment of some of my favourite leaders like Nelson Mandela. We should criticize our leaders but we should give credit to their positive side and encourage them with our appreciation for their sacrifice to lay a good foundation for the current and future generations. Surely, there would be good and bad leaders. We should differentiate them and not paint bad and good leaders with the same brush. Futurist Kowus.

  • Coronavirus: Businesses must embrace change for growth

David Ofosu-Dorte, a Senior Partner at AB & David has called on Ghanaian businesses to confront changes in the business environment and get ready to benefit from African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

He said they should also be ready for the opportunities that would be available in the post-COVID-19 era.

A statement issued in Accra said Mr Ofosu-Dorte was speaking at the Virtual Annual Business and Leadership conference organised by the Seed Transformation Network (STN) Ghana Chapter.

He reiterated the need for businesses to prepare for change, saying having the right mindset and approach to doing business was critical for the success of future businesses.

Dr Tony Oteng-Gyasi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tropical Cable and Conductor Limited, said: “change is a variable that is inevitable in every business environment.”

He, therefore, encouraged business leaders and entrepreneurs to pay attention to their environment, be receptive and adaptive, and work to resolves challenges that might negatively affect their businesses.

“Businesses need to be aware of the change and identify the business opportunities that they present. Businesses that think and prepare for change, and have it engraved in their policies, survive best,” he added.

Ms Esther Cobbah, CEO of Stratcomm Africa, who spoke on scaling up in diverse cultures, said solutions to life’s circumstances were found in different social contexts.

“Businesses exist to serve people, and people, are located in the culture in which they operate,” she said.

She said business offerings were designed to meet human needs and a context analysis needed to be done to help understand the culture of the intended audience and how that could impact the operations of the business.

“There is, therefore, the need for businesses to have a clear communication strategy in place to support their operations and engagement with key stakeholders,” she added.

Mrs Linda Yaa Ampah, President of STN Ghana Chapter, said the business environment would become more challenging post-COVID-19 with the coming into force of the AfCFTA.

She said, hence the need for business leaders and entrepreneurs to understand their environment would impact their businesses and find appropriate ways to manage them for growth.

“We can contribute to the growth of the Ghanaian economy if business leaders and entrepreneurs have the right knowledge, information, experience, and skills to face the new challenge that lies ahead,” she said.

The Seed Network Business Conference is the Networks programme instituted to empower business leaders and entrepreneurs to scale and thrive in the face of challenges.

This years conference was streamed LIVE on Zoom, Facebook, and YouTube due to the COVID-19 pandemic on the theme: “Embracing forced change within diverse cultures.”

  • 2020/21 GPL: Week 1 Preview WAFA SC v King Faisal

With the results of 2019/20 Ghana Premier League declared null and void, WAFA remains unbeaten at home since January 21, 2015, and that tradition is set to continue in their opener against King Faisal today.

However, the academy side displayed signs of frailties last season and the defeat to Liberty Professionals-although expunged from the record books-in a Week 6 fixture was a testimony.

As usual, WAFA was quiet on the transfer market with just two players Michael Kyei Dwamena and Godwin Agbevor coming in.

Also, left-back Francis Boateng has returned from Portugal and he has named in their squad for the season. He faces a huge fight with promoted John Tedeku who excelled in his debut season in the 2019/20 campaign.

Ghana youth international striker Daniel Lomotey has recovered from a niggling injury that sidelined him for the chunk of last season.

WAFA’s home fortress gives them a double advantage and on a good day they could knock off their opponents with violent combinations.

In some of their high profile pre-season friendlies, they beat Inter Allies but lost to Tema Youth.

King Faisal was the basement boy in the collapsed season but a lot of changes have occurred during the break.

Administratively, the club has signed veteran George Amoako as Chief Executive and he is trying to restructure the club.

The appointment of Daniel Odoi Aryeh as the club’s Brand and Marketing Manager should also improve matters off the pitch.

Serbian trainer Slavisa Bozicic was around during the pandemic and had enough time to work on his troops.

But Faisal is a different side without last season’s top scorer, striker Ibrahim Osman, who has been recalled by his parent club, Asante Kotoko after a successful loan spell.

They have been training on the synthetic pitch at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to get used to the pitch and the trouble that await them in Sogokope.

King Faisal had some good pre-season matches which included beating BYF Academy 1-0 thanks to a Frimpong Boateng goal and the 4-0 drubbing of Odweaanoma.

Deputy coach Anthony Commey is promising a different side this term.

“Everything is going well, unlike last season when didn’t get enough time to prepare. We are still trying to fix things and hopefully we are going to see new King Faisal in the first game against WAFA,” he said.

Probable XI for King Faisal: Stephen Awere-Micheal Amoh, Haruna Abubakar, Pious Baffour, Mutawakilu Fusseni-Michael Akuffo, Frank Manu, Eric Boakye, Frimpong Boateng-Wadudu Yakubu, Kwame Peprah.

Prediction: WAFA SC 2-0 King Faisal.

  • 2020/21 GPL: Week 1 Preview Medeama v Accra Great Olympics

Medeama will hope for a good start to the 2020-21 season when they host Accra Great Olympics in Tarkwa today.

The Mauve and Yellow welcome star midfielder Justice Blay back to the team after a successful loan spell at Asante Kotoko.

Medeama has brought in six-seven new players to augment the squad ahead of the new campaign.

The two-time FA Cup holders have signed strikers Abdul Basit Adam and Abass Mohammed as well as defenders Musah Baba Abdulai and Patrick Yeboah.

They have also signed versatile Kwadwo Asamoah as well as goalkeeper Frank Boateng to augment their squad.

Youngster Godfred Abban has also joined them from second-tier side Asokwa Deportivo.

They will add up to the already existing squad of Daniel Egyin, Eric Kwakwa, Kwasi Donsu, Agyei Boakye, Ebenezer Ackahbi, Ali Ouattara, Ibrahim Yaro, Michael Yeboah, Isaac Agyenim Boateng, and Kalibo Toussaint.

Great Olympics have augmented their squad with several experienced players in their ranks including captain Gladson Awako.

They also have on their roaster Stephen Kwaku, Saed Salifu, Benjamin Asare, Philip Nii Kojo Sackey, Roger Sackey Abdul Manaf Mudasiru, Maxwell Abbey Quaye, David Amuzu, Arnold Abbey-Mensah, Michael Yeboah, and Godfred Odametey amongst others.

  • 2020/21 GPL: Week 1 Preview – AshantiGold SC vs Karela United FC

AshantiGold SC will begin their 2020/21 Ghana Premier League campaign with a game against Karela United FC at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium today.

The Miners will be going into the game with a somewhat new squad after losing top players such as James Akaminko, Latif Anabila, Safiu Mumuni, and Eric Donkor.

However, coach Milovan Cirkovic and his charges are gunning to kick off the season with a victory as that will spur them on for their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round clash against Burkinabe side Salitas on November 27.

Karela United meanwhile has been plotting their opponent’s downfall with a series of impressive pre-season friendly matches.

The Anyinase-based outfit bolstered their squad with six signings ahead of the campaign.

They recruited Godfred Adotey, Augustine Randolf, Yaw Ansah, Obed Kofi Sam and Prosper Avoh, and former Asante Kotoko midfielder Umar Bashiru.

The match promises to be a dicey encounter especially as both clubs will be going into the match without any reported injury in camp.

AshantiGold however has the edge over Karela United having beaten them 1-0 and 2-1 in 2018 and 2020 respectively.

In those two clashes, the Obuasi-based outfit won one at the Len Clay Stadium and the other one at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park.

AshantiGold was sitting 6th on the standings last season before its termination due to the Coronavirus crisis.

Karela was languishing at 17th position after Matchday 15.

  • Goalkeeper Fatau Dauda handed shock Black Stars return after three-year absence

Ghana goalkeeper Fatau Dauda has been handed a shock return to the Black Stars after a three-year absence as he is in the squad for Tuesday’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan, Ghanasoccernet.com can exclusively reveal.

The Legon Cities shot-stopper was handed a late call-up for the match against the Nile Crocodiles and he will travel with the squad on Sunday for the Group C game.

The 35-year-old has now been rewarded with his fantastic form for the Accra-based side in their opening match of the season against Berekum Chelsea on Saturday.

The experienced goalie will be returning to the national team for the first time since 2017 as he has not been called to the Black Stars since coach Kwasi Appiah returned for his second spell.

Dauda has benefitted from his commitment to the Ghana Premier League as he has not wavered from playing in the country after returning from abroad to relaunch his career following his stint with Nigerian giants Enyimba

The experienced goalkeeper has been called to replace South Africa-based deputy captain Richard Ofori who has been ruled out of the match because of suspension.

The Orlando Pirates player has been ruled out of the match against Sudan because he received his second yellow card of the competition when Ghana played on Thursday.

This means he must sit out of action for one match before he is able to return to play a competitive match for the Black Stars.

The situation has paved the way for Dauda to return to the fold and crucially to fight to remain in the side permanently for future matches of the Black Stars.

Legon Cities shot-stopper looks to have profited from his association with the Accra-based club who have injected seriousness into their affairs.

Ghana is seeking to qualify to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with a victory against the Sudanese on Tuesday.
